Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, Dr. Randy Abbey, who also serves as the newly appointed CEO of Ghana COCOBOD, has addressed concerns about how he plans to balance his responsibilities at COCOBOD, the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and Heart of Lions.

His appointment as CEO of COCOBOD by President John Mahama came just days after he was named Chairman of the Black Stars Committee.

His appointment led to questions about his ability to handle multiple high-profile roles simultaneously.

However, in an interview with Citi Sports, Dr. Abbey dismissed concerns about being overwhelmed, explaining that while he owns Heart of Lions, he is not involved in the club’s daily operations.

“I don’t run Heart of Lions on a day-to-day basis. I’m the owner, and it ends there. I’m the president of the club, but there are people who manage it,” he clarified.

NPP gov’t issuing mining licenses after December was disrespectful to Ghanaians – Benjamin Quashie

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders Chairman for South Africa, Mr. Benjamin Kofi Quashie, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government over the issuance of over 100 mining licenses after losing the 2024 elections.

Contributing to a panel discussion on the on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, Mr. Quashie described the action from the Nana Akufo-Addo government as disrespectful to Ghanaians.

“If we are all in the process of righting the wrongs, which have created environmental problems for us, and then licenses are still being issued after you have lost an election, then President Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP have not taken Ghanaians seriously,” stressed Mr. Quashie.

He added that if President Akufo-Addo had the slightest respect for Ghanaians, stemming from the monumental environmental damage mining has wrought on the nation, he wouldn’t have issued even one license, especially after his party lost the election.

Juxtaposing the constitutional amendments to the mining license issuance, Mr. Quashie suggested that the Presidential Transition Act should be re-examined.

“Certain portions need to be repealed to prevent a president or government that has lost elections from making major decisions while leaving office,” he said, underscoring that an outgoing party cannot hide behind legalities to plunge the country into chaos or unreasonably overburden the incoming government. “It has not helped in this present circumstance and has not helped previously,” he stated.

The NDC SA Council of Elders chair averred that with the overwhelming NDC majority in Parliament, and with the overarching vision of contributing to governance, “I think the NDC would repeal most of these laws that have not augured well for our governance system,” Mr. Quashie hinted.

In conclusion, Mr. Quashie underscored the fact that it is still early days yet, suggesting he has a strong conviction that President Mahama will strengthen the legal framework to help combat the canker of illegal mining. “We have a duty to perform so that the Ghanaian people don’t lose hope in trusting the NDC with their mandate.

Ghana secures $2.8bn debt relief as official creditors sign MoU

0

Ghana has formally secured $2.8 billion in debt relief after all 25 members of its official creditor committee fully signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which was initially reached in principle under the G20 Common Framework for Debt Treatment.

This is expected to provide crucial fiscal breathing space as Ghana advances structural reforms under its $3 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.

“The Government of the Republic of Ghana is pleased to announce that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) reached with its Official Creditor Committee (OCC) has been signed by all Participating Creditor Countries”, Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, told the media in Accra on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.

“The signing of the MoU formalises the debt treatment agreed upon with Official Creditors and marks a crucial step towards Ghana restoring long-term debt sustainability. The agreement provides significant debt service relief during the Fund-supported programme period, allowing financial resources to be directed towards supporting and strengthening the economic recovery”, he added.

He disclosed that discussions surrounding the remaining 7% of the deal are ongoing. The outstanding 7% involves negotiations with about 60 international financial institutions.

However, a $2.7 billion debt arrangement with commercial creditors remains unresolved – leaving the government focused on securing a final agreement in the coming months.

“Ghana continues to engage in good faith with all commercial external creditors, striving to finalise restructuring agreements that respect Ghana’s need for debt relief and the comparability of treatment principle, the Minister added.

With the signing of the MOU by all members of Ghana’s official creditor committee, the country is nearing the completion of its external debt restructuring process.

Securing this final component is critical to restoring fiscal stability and achieving the goals outlined in Ghana’s $3 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.

The debt relief under the G20 Common Framework provides Ghana with much-needed fiscal space to implement reforms, stabilize the economy and rebuild investor confidence.

This progress is also a significant step toward addressing the country’s debt sustainability challenges and positioning it for long-term economic recovery.

Government officials remain optimistic that ongoing engagements with commercial creditors will yield favourable outcomes, allowing Ghana to finalise its comprehensive external debt restructuring plan.

Alliance urges capture of NCDs on NHIS medication lists

0

By Augustine Agyapong

Duayaw-Nkwanta, (Ahafo), Jan. 29, GNA – The Ghana Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) Alliance, a civil society organisation has re-echoed the need for the nation to capture the NCDs on the lists of medication of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Mrs Ama Nyarko, a NCDs advocate, and member of the Alliance which works to prevent and control NCDs in the country noted that NCDs remained a leading cause of deaths in the country, urging the government to prioritise its fight.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the side-lines of a day’s training workshop held at Duayaw-Nkwanta in the Ahafo Region, Mrs Nyarko expressed worry that NCDs killed more people in deprived communities due to patients’ inability to procure drugs and medication.

The Alliance organised the training for some of its members and some people living with NCDs to empower them to remain on the forefront to prevent and control NCDs in the local communities in the Tano North Municipality of the region.

“We can’t continue to neglect NCDs and allow patients to die preventable and needless deaths”, Mrs Nyarko stated, and therefore called on the Ministry of Health to prioritize NCDs fight and prevention too.

Mr Christopher Agbega, the Coordinator for the Alliance highlighted the relevance of the training, saying it was also geared towards enhancing the wellbeing of people living with NCDs.

He expressed concern about the societal stigmatization and discrimination of people living with NCDs and called for collective effort to stem it, saying the high stigma was also a contributing factor that leads to the rising deaths.

Abedi Pele, John Mensah, three others

0

Abedi Pele (L) and John Mensah (R), former captains of the Black Stars Abedi Pele (L) and John Mensah (R), former captains of the Black Stars

Ghanaian football icon André Ayew has built an illustrious career, earning respect both on and off the pitch.

From his early days at Marseille to captaining the Black Stars, his journey has been shaped by several key figures who have influenced his personal and professional life.

In an interview with Ligue 1, Ayew shared the five most influential people in his life.

Abedi Pele

The first and most important person in Ayew’s life is his father, the legendary Abedi Pele. A three-time African Footballer of the Year, Abedi Pele is more than just a father—he is Ayew’s role model and source of inspiration.

“He is my idol, very influential in everything that I do. He has always supported me, always advised me, and made me dream big. He’s my everything.”

Growing up in a footballing family, Ayew was surrounded by the sport, but it was his father’s guidance that nurtured his passion and ambition.

His mother

While Abedi Pele provided footballing wisdom, it was Ayew’s mother who ensured balance and stability in his life.

She played a crucial role in his upbringing, managing both the good and difficult times while prioritizing education and family values.

“She is the queen of the Ayew family. She handles everything—good, bad, and education. We never lacked anything when we were young, so we were very blessed. These two (my parents) are on top of the list.”

Pape Diouf

The late Pape Diouf, former Olympique Marseille president and a close friend of Ayew’s father, played a significant role in shaping his mindset.

Having known Ayew since childhood, Diouf became a mentor, instilling values that extended beyond football.

“He shaped my mindset in a lot of ways. He made me understand what life is about, what football is about. His words were, ‘You are going to succeed. You will make it because that’s how everyone will remember you—not just for football, but for who you are outside the pitch.’”

His aunt, Hala

Ayew also acknowledges the significant influence of his aunt, Hala, who supported him from a young age.

She played a pivotal role in his transition to France, believing in his talent and helping him adjust to life abroad.

“She is my second mother, and she came with me to France when I was moving back. She believed in me from day one. She’s someone I love dearly and is very close to my heart.”

Football mentors and teammates

While Ayew credits individuals for shaping his career, he also recognizes the impact of coaches and senior teammates who guided him along the way.

He highlights the influence of José Anigo and Didier Deschamps, who played crucial roles in his development at Marseille, while also acknowledging how his national team teammates helped him grow.

“Someone like José Anigo was very important to me, and Didier Deschamps as well. And then there were the players who took care of me when I joined the national team—John Mensah, John Paintsil. I am someone who values loyalty a lot, and these people were there for me. They helped shape who I am today.”

Outgunning Congo – the evidence that shows Rwanda is backing M23 rebels

0

Protesters in Kinshasa, the capital of Democratic Republic of Congo, have been burning portraits of Rwanda’s president and tearing up Rwandan flags as M23 rebels have taken control of most the eastern city of Goma.

Their fury is focused on Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who they accuse of backing the rebels – an accusation long made by the UN.

To put it bluntly, a group of UN experts maintains the Rwandan army is in “de facto control of M23 operations”, detailing how M23 recruits are trained under Rwandan supervision and supported by high-tech Rwandan weaponry.

Goma, which lies at the foot of a volcano near Lake Kivu, sits on the border with Rwanda. It is the capital of mineral-rich North Kivu province – and is an important trading and humanitarian hub and the base for the UN’s largest peacekeeping mission.

The city had also become a refuge for those fleeing the conflict between M23 fighters and the army that erupted again in late 2021 – with the population swelling to around two million.

They all face further turmoil as fighting erupted there on Sunday night with loud explosions echoing through the streets, which are now strewn with bodies. The exact circumstances of what is going on is unclear as phone lines are down and electricity and water supplies have been cut off. But the M23 seem to have captured most, if not all, of the city.

“There was no question that there are Rwandan troops in Goma supporting the M23,” said UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix, though he added that it was it was difficult to tell the exact numbers on the ground in Goma.

Tellingly some Congolese army soldiers in Goma who surrendered on Monday, did so by crossing over the border into Rwanda.

Since the conflict begun, President Kagame has repeatedly denied any involvement in supporting the M23 rebels, who are well equipped, well armed and well trained.

However, this response has noticeably shifted as accusations continue to grow with “overwhelming evidence” showing Rwanda’s support for the rebel group, according to Richard Moncrief, International Crisis Group’s project director for the Great Lakes

“The tone has changed to justification for defensive measures,” he told the BBC. “It has become harder to deny Rwanda’s support for M23.”

On Sunday, Rwanda’s foreign ministry said in a statement: “This fighting close to the Rwandan border continues to present a serious threat to Rwanda’s security and territorial integrity, and necessitates Rwanda’s sustained defensive posture.”

It said it was concerned by “misguided or manipulative” statements that lacked context about the conflict.

For Kagame, the context all comes down to the Rwandan genocide that took place over 100 days in 1994.

The ethnic Hutu militia involved in killing up to 800,000 people – the vast majority from the Tutsi community – fled to what is now DR Congo, some forming the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR).

This rebel group is still active in the notoriously unstable eastern DR Congo – and still includes some of those responsible for the genocide.

Kagame, who headed the rebel Tutsi force that ended the killing more than three decades ago, sees this “genocidal militia” as an existential threat.

His government has twice invaded DR Congo, saying it wants to stop Hutu rebel groups from staging cross-border attacks.

Earlier this month he called out his Congolese counterpart, Félix Tshisekedi, for failing to deal with the FDLR and talk to the M23, saying this was exacerbating the conflict.

Mr Moncrief believes that the targeting of Goma is more about making a political point as he says the M23 does not need the city strategically as it already “controls many more lucrative areas”.

“It is President Kagame’s way of exerting power over who is in charge of North Kivu,” said the Great Lakes expert.

Rwanda accused the military governor of North Kivu, who was killed in fighting last week, of collaborating with the FDLR.

The discovery of this kind of high-level collaboration, experts agree, would have been like a red flag to a bull for Rwanda.

The M23’s origins are tied to these tensions – it is the latest incarnation of a rebel group that says it is fighting for the interests of the minority Tutsi community in eastern DR Congo.

Its first uprising more than a decade ago ended with a peace deal – when its fighters disarmed and mainly moved into camps in Uganda.

But three years ago, they began leaving the camps saying the deal was not honoured and within a couple months was seizing territory.

The UN peacekeeping mission – first deployed in 1999 – is not mandated to go on the offensive. Two regional forces – an East African one followed by a southern African one – specially deployed over the last few years at the request of Tshisekedi have failed to contain the M23.

This gives an indication of the M23’s sophisticated operations.

According to the UN group of experts, this includes five months of training at the M23’s main base in Tchanzu, hilly terrain not far from Rwanda’s border, that incorporates courses on theory and ideology and then practical elements including “war tactics”, “engagement rules” and “bush tactics”.

It said Rwandan officers were often at the camp, where recruits, including children, were brought – some joining up on a voluntary basis, others forced to do so in a systematic operation where local chiefs had to provide conscripts.

The experts said Sultani Makenga, who once fought for Kagame in the early 1990s in Rwanda and is now the M23’s military chief, attended some of the passing-out ceremonies between 25 September and 31 October 2024 that involved 3,000 recruits.

Rwanda’s spokesperson Yolande Makolo did not address the question of whether Rwandan officers were in the M23 camp but she did deny the charges about child soldiers, telling the BBC last year: “The claim about recruiting minors in camps is absurd, it’s blatant information warfare against Rwanda.”

However UN expert reports detail how the M23’s strength has grown since May when numbers were put at around 3,000.

The experts estimate that between 3,000 and 4,000 Rwandan army troops are on the ground in DR Congo – saying it based this on authenticated photographs, drone footage, video recordings, testimonies and intelligence.

Captured M23 fighters said that the Rwandans were known as the “Friendly Force”, with the experts’ December report saying the English term was “generically used” even when interviewees were speaking in other languages.

They said these Rwandan special forces were there to train and support the rebels, and they did not interact with M23 regulars.

Rwanda’s ally Uganda, unhappy about another rebel group in DR Congo that threatens its security, has also been accused of helping the M23 – with its officers also spotted at Tchanzu. The UN experts say Uganda has also supplied weapons, hosted rebel leaders and allowed cross-border movements of M23 fighters – accusations Kampala denies.

Kagame recently expressed his frustration that after Tshisekedi came to power in 2019, his suggestion that Rwanda work alongside the Congolese army to tackle the FDLR had been rebuffed – unlike a joint offensive by DR Congo and Uganda against the Islamist Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels.

This may explain the re-emergence of the M23 in 2021 – with evidence showing Rwanda’s backing of the group continues to grow.

Clémentine de Montjoye, senior researcher in the Africa division at Human Rights Watch, told the BBC that geolocated images placed Rwandan troops in Sake, a town just outside Goma last week.

The UN experts say the M23’s decision to capture the mining town of Rubaya, which fell to its forces in May, was “motivated by a strategic need to monopolise” the lucrative trade in coltan, which is used to make batteries for electric vehicles and mobile phones.

Its December report says the group now collects at least $800,000 (£643,000) a month from the taxation of coltan in Rubaya – and ensures that around 120 tonnes of the coveted mineral is sent directly to Rwanda every four weeks.

It includes satellite images to show how a road was widened by September on the Congolese side of the Kibumba border crossing to allow access for heavy trucks that were previously unable to use the route into Rwanda.

Ms De Montjoye explained how the advanced weapons being used by the M23 were not available to any other of the numerous armed groups operating in eastern DR Congo.

“Earlier last year, we documented how Rwandan forces, and M23 had fired 122mm rockets, hitting displacement camps,” she told the BBC.

“It’s certainly with the kind of military support that the M23 has received that they’ve been able to make such an advance [on Goma].”

The UN experts have documented many such examples, including the use of Israeli-made anti-tank guided missiles.

Mr Moncrief said the M23 was also using technology to interfere with Global Positioning System (GPS) that had stopped the Congolese army from flying drones it had acquired from China.

The UN experts said the “spoofing and jamming” near areas controlled by M23 and the Rwandan army had also disrupted other aircraft.

President Kagame has dismissed these UN reports, pouring scorn on their “expertise” and saying they ignore many outrages committed in DR Congo to focus on “imaginary problems” created by the M23.

The East African Community – currently headed by Kenya’s president – is now trying to mediate, though Tshisekedi has said he will not attend a hastily organised emergency summit.

Observers say Rwanda’s president will be telling any mediator that the FDLR is the only subject up for discussion as he is adamant their presence makes DR Congo an unsafe neighbour – something he reiterated at a press conference earlier this month.

“Honestly, for the last 30 years if anyone wanted to understand what the problems are [in DR Congo] and what solutions should be, you don’t even need to be an expert,” Kagame said.

Rwandan soldiers escorted surrendering Congolese troops over the border into Rwanda on Monday

UN experts included photos of a short-range air defence system in their most recent report, saying three were spotted in M23 territory (Kibumba, Kitchanga and Karuba) in November being operated by soldiers using weaponry and backpacks similar to standard Rwandan army issue

I didn’t intend to disparage appointments c’ttee members – Barker-Vormawor

0

Social media activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has clarified that his recent bribery allegations were not directed at Parliament’s Appointments Committee.

His clarification comes amid intense public and political scrutiny following a social media post that many interpreted as an accusation against the Committee.

The controversy erupted when Barker-Vormawor, known for his outspoken criticism of governance in Ghana, alleged on social media that some individuals were paying bribes to secure ministerial approvals.

In his post, he wrote: “So all the monies the ministerial appointees are being asked to pay to the Appointments Committee just to get approved, are those ones not affected by ORAL? Strange Republic.”

The cryptic nature of his statement, combined with the direct mention of the Appointments Committee, sparked widespread speculation and backlash. Many viewed it as an attack on the integrity of the parliamentary body responsible for vetting and approving ministerial nominees.

However, appearing before the Appointments Committee on Wednesday, January 29, Barker-Vormawor’s legal counsel, Nana Ato Dadzie, sought to clarify the activist’s remarks.

Addressing the Committee, Nana Ato Dadzie emphasized that Barker-Vormawor’s comments were not meant to accuse its members of corruption but were intended to highlight broader concerns about transparency and ethical governance.

“The point of that statement is that it was not directed at the Appointments Committee in any way. It was only intended to expose certain matters that had come to his notice—acts that some people were apparently engaging in, which may not enhance transparency,” Dadzie explained.

He further noted that the post carried a double meaning and should not be interpreted as a direct indictment of the Committee’s work or integrity. Instead, it was meant as a whistleblower’s effort to shed light on unethical practices within Ghana’s political landscape.

“It was never his intention to disparage the Appointments Committee, and one can clearly say that the statement has a double meaning. If anything, it was a statement from a whistleblower indicating that certain things are happening,” he added.

Barker-Vormawor’s clarification comes as Parliament continues to uphold its commitment to due process and accountability in the vetting of ministerial nominees.

AAWPFestival 3.1 in Nairobi honours Sitawa Namwalie, explores memory as resistance

0

The just-ended iteration of the All African Women Poetry Festival (AAWPFestival) 3.1, held at the iconic Kenya National Theatre in Nairobi, was a resounding success.

This year, the festival proudly honored renowned Kenyan poet, playwright, and performer Sitawa Namwalie as one of its 2025 Literary Legends. The event drew over 80 attendees and sparked profound conversations on the intersection of poetry, memory, and resistance.

The panel featured four distinguished voices: Nyangari Macharia, who performs under the stage name Nyash; Winne Madoro, known as Kazu; Emma Ofosua, the freestyle poet and founder of the All African Women Poetry Festival; and the celebrated honoree Sitawa Namwalie. Together, they delved into the festival’s overarching theme, Of Memory and Loss, with a specific focus on Memory as Resistance.

Through a compelling discussion, the panelists examined memory and loss through three major lenses: the tragic loss of Kenyan women to femicide, the erosion of native languages and cultural heritage, and the diminishing sense of humanity and empathy in society.

These discussions unearthed powerful recollections of what love once was and should be, the essence of communal living, and the deep-rooted connection between people and their environment. A profound takeaway from the session was the assertion that the greatest resistance to the erasure of resilience and past struggles is joy—a radical act of defiance in the face of loss and hardship.

The session culminated in a stirring round of poetry from the panelists, each blending their voices into a powerful expression of remembrance, protest, and celebration. The festival concluded with the presentation of the honorary recognition to Sitawa Namwalie, a moment that underscored the festival’s commitment to celebrating Africa’s literary giants.

Powered by Tuniq Africa LBG and made possible through the generous partnership of Creative Spills in Kenya, AAWPFestival 3.1 reaffirmed its mission to amplify the voices of African women poets and engage with critical socio-cultural themes through poetry and dialogue.

As we close this chapter, we invite poetry enthusiasts and literary lovers to anticipate AAWPFestival 3.2, where we will continue our exploration of Of Memory and Loss with a special tribute to Her Excellency Prof. Abena Busia.

The next edition promises another powerful lineup of poets and thought leaders, deepening the conversation on memory, identity, and cultural legacy.

Stay tuned for updates, and join us in this ongoing celebration of African poetry, storytelling, and resistance @aawpfestival on all platforms.

Bribery Allegations: My client is ready to apologise

Oliver Barker-Vormawor and Nana Ato Dadzie Oliver Barker-Vormawor and Nana Ato Dadzie

Nana Ato Dadzie, counsel for private legal practitioner and activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has stated that his client is willing to offer a public apology to the Appointments Committee for making disparaging comments about its members.

Appearing before the committee on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, Barker-Vormawor denied the allegations but clarified that a post on his Facebook page accusing all committee members of taking bribes before vetting was not intended to disparage them.

He emphasised that his client was ready to apologise for any comments perceived as offensive.

“The statement said that NDC members of the Appointments Committee take money from Mahama’s ministerial nominees before approving them. They must submit themselves to ORAL, and this is not from Barker-Vormawor, it is fake. Some primary investigations show that this statement is fake. This is not from Barker-Vormawor. It’s fake.

“Some investigations have shown where this statement appeared. Well, I’m just quoting. Yeah, there’s a document with a title that isn’t partisan. Just quoting the NPP Projects Bureau. People can forward where the post appeared. This means you have to search before we go there. I’m not saying that this is partisan-based. I will just mention where it appeared.

“So, we would not want to speak to that. As I said, it’s not us. Anyway, the second one – we apologise if there was any misunderstanding or if the wrong impression was given. As a supporter of democracy, he is really willing and prepared to, one, apologise for this misunderstanding and, two, withdraw the statement. And this is really why we are here,” he explained.

Barker-Vormawor was formally invited by the Chairman of the Appointments Committee and the 1st Deputy Speaker of Parliament to provide evidence to support his allegations.

Bribery allegations: I didn’t intend to disparage appointments c’ttee members

Be concerned your wife is supporting you; she doesn’t love you and has an agenda – Agradaa to Ogyaba

0

Prophet Emmanuel Akwasi Boakye, also known as 'Ogyaba' Prophet Emmanuel Akwasi Boakye, also known as ‘Ogyaba’

While Prophet Ogyaba has embraced his wife’s support amidst the numerous criticisms as a ‘badge of honour’, Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as ‘Nana Agradaa’, has stated that he should be more concerned about it.

Prophet Ogyaba has faced severe backlash on social media after his ex-side chick, Cassie, made serious allegations against him, including claims of neglect, threats to life, and the revelation of their extramarital affair, which included a pregnancy.

In the face of the backlash, he took to social media, asserting that despite the chaos, his wife remained steadfastly by his side.

He said while the world has been criticising him, his wife has been “wiping his tears” and downplaying the situation.

Prophet Ogyaba said when his wife saw Cassie’s videos online, she called her “childish” and laughed about it.

“When my wife saw the videos from the girl, she called her childish. My wife said instead of Cassie staying quiet and enjoying her position as a side chick, she wanted to overtake her and be promoted to wife. We laughed about it, and that was the end of our discussion on the matter,” Prophet Ogyaba stated on TikTok.

However, Nana Agradaa has emphatically stated that Ogyaba should not interpret his wife’s support as genuine love.

She strongly believes that Prophet Ogyaba’s wife may have a hidden agenda or has mentally checked out of the relationship long ago.

“Don’t think if your wife is quiet about the issue, or is consoling you or urging you on, it means she has your best interests at heart. You’re kidding yourself. I’m telling you for a fact that your wife does not love you.

“You had the confidence to come out and say your wife said you should let it go. You had the nerve to tell us you are not made of wood but you don’t know that your wife has already hatched a plan; she has an agenda up her sleeve,” Agradaa said.

She continued, “Don’t be deceived. Do you think your wife will clap for you while you go through this? She definitely left you mentally long ago. She doesn’t love you anymore. No woman who truly loves her husband would make light of a situation like this. She may pretend, console you, and join you in fighting this woman, but I’m telling you for a fact, she has her own agenda,” she stated.

Nana Agradaa, also said Prophet Ogyaba’s wife may even be involved in an extramarital affair.

“The young pastors in your church or other people are definitely sleeping with her,” she claimed.

Ghana signs MoU with Official Creditor Committee to restructure debt

0

Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson

The Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Finance has successfully signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with its Official Creditor Committee (OCC), marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to resolve its ongoing debt challenges.

The MoU has been agreed upon by all Participating Creditor Countries, signaling a collective commitment to supporting Ghana in its bid to restore long-term debt sustainability.

This agreement formalises the debt treatment plan previously negotiated with the Official Creditors, providing Ghana with crucial debt service relief during the period of its IMF-supported programme.

The relief will allow the country to allocate more financial resources toward bolstering its economic recovery efforts.

With the MoU now signed, Ghana is set to implement the agreed terms through bilateral agreements with each of the participating creditor countries.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance on January 29, 2025, it mentioned that the government remains dedicated to working closely with its Official Creditors to expedite the signing of these bilateral agreements and ensure the timely execution of the debt restructuring plan.

The government also expressed its gratitude to the members of the OCC, especially co-chairs China and France, for their steadfast support in the country’s debt restructuring process.

“Ghana continues to engage in good faith with all commercial external creditors, striving to finalize restructuring agreements that respect Ghana’s need for debt relief and the comparability of treatment principle,” the statement concluded.

World’s richest people lose $108 billion after DeepSeek selloff

0

Billionaires whose fortunes are linked to artificial intelligence were the biggest losers Billionaires whose fortunes are linked to artificial intelligence were the biggest losers

The world’s 500 richest people, led by Nvidia Corp. co-founder Jensen Huang, lost a combined $108 billion on Monday as a tech-led selloff tied to Chinese AI developer DeepSeek sent major indices plunging.

Billionaires whose fortunes are linked to artificial intelligence were the biggest losers: Huang saw his fortune fall $20.1 billion, a 20% drop, while Oracle Corp. co-founder Larry Ellison’s $22.6 billion loss was larger in absolute terms, but represented just 12% of his fortune, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Dell Inc.’s Michael Dell lost $13 billion, and Binance Holdings Ltd. co-founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao shaved $12.1 billion.

Tech-sector titans as a group saw $94 billion of wealth evaporate — roughly 85% of the Bloomberg index’s total decline. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 3.1%, and the S&P 500 dropped 1.5%.

Hangzhou-based DeepSeek has been developing AI models since 2023, but the company first came onto the radar of many Western investors this weekend as its free DeepSeek R1 chatbot app topped download charts worldwide. So many new users piled in that DeepSeek struggled to keep the app online, suffering outages and forcing it to restrict signups to users with Chinese phone numbers.

DeepSeek’s dark-horse entry into the AI race, which it says cost just $5.6 million to develop, is a challenge to Silicon Valley’s narrative that massive capital spending is essential to developing the strongest models. That delivered a serious blow to billionaires whose fortunes are tied to the Western AI supply chain that’s been the equities market’s biggest driver over the past two years.

Similar Playbook

Soaring valuations for so-called AI hyperscalers — including Meta Platforms Inc., Alphabet Inc. and Microsoft Corp. — have generated billions in wealth for their owners since OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT in November 2022. These companies have for the most part operated on a similar playbook: Spend huge sums to develop and run AI systems by hoarding top-of-the-line semiconductors and the energy supplies needed to run them.

Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg announced Friday that the company planned to spend $60 billion to $65 billion on projects related to AI this year, well above Wall Street estimates. Capital spending across all Big Tech firms is on pace to reach $200 billion in 2025, according to a Bloomberg Intelligence report.

Despite limited revenue to show for all their investment so far, markets have rewarded US tech stocks with record-high valuations, which have in turn generated historic wealth gains for their owners. Nvidia has stood out as the AI boom’s biggest single winner so far, with Huang’s net worth increasing almost eight-fold to $121 billion since the start of 2023 through Friday. Zuckerberg’s fortune soared 385% to $229 billion over the same period and Amazon.com Inc.’s Jeff Bezos gained 133% to $254 billion.

While Huang and Ellison suffered losses, other major tech billionaires’ fortunes escaped unscathed. Zuckerberg’s net worth ended the day up, gaining $4.3 billion as Meta rebounded from an early-session decline. Bezos’ wealth climbed by about $632 million.

Capital Spending

The fact that DeepSeek was able to develop a free model that potentially rivals or beats competitors including ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude at a fraction of the development cost led investors to question the logic behind Silicon Valley’s dependence on capital spending.

A key reason why DeepSeek didn’t rely on big investment and top-of-the-line chips to develop its model is that Chinese firms have had limited access to the powerful GPUs, or graphics processing units, most Western companies rely on ever since the US government instituted strict export controls on the most advanced chips.

In an interview with CNBC last week, Alexandr Wang, CEO of training data provider Scale AI, said that despite the export controls, DeepSeek and other Chinese developers likely have more GPUs than Silicon Valley is aware of.

“The Chinese labs have more H100s than people think,” Wang said, referring to Nvidia’s top-of-the-line AI chip. “My understanding is that DeepSeek has about 50,000 H100s, which they can’t talk about, obviously, because it’s against the export controls that the US has in place.”

Randy Abbey reveals how he will manage COCOBOD, GFA, and Heart of Lions responsibilities

Dr. Randy Abbey, CEO of COCOBOD Dr. Randy Abbey, CEO of COCOBOD

“They pound your fufu during elections and threaten you after elections” – M.anifest wades into “silly child” saga

Ghanaian rapper M.anifest has highlighted the vast difference in politicians before and after elections.

He established that politicians prior to elections are the humblest people one will ever meet, but became arrogant immediately after the elections have been conducted, and they have been sworn into office.

In a post on X, he wrote; “Before elections: pound your fufu, wash your clothes, clean your gutters, door to door kɔkɔɔkɔ, and maybe even pave your roads.” This we experienced in the just ended December 7, 2024 elections.

We are not being fair to NSS personnel over four months delay of allowance

0

The Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has described the prolonged delay in paying National Service Scheme (NSS) personnel their allowances as “unfair,” vowing to expedite the resolution of the issue.

According to him, NSS personnel across the country have gone four months without receiving their allowances.

An issue that has sparked widespread concern amid Ghana’s prevailing economic challenges.

Addressing the media on January 28, 2025, Opare Addo acknowledged the hardship faced by the affected personnel and assured them that the government is taking steps to rectify the situation promptly.

“We know the challenges that confront the service personnel. As it stands now, my assurances to them are that we will liaise with the finance minister so that quickly their allowances will be released to them,” he stated.

He added, “It is unfair for anybody to go four months without receiving a salary in this current economic dispensation we find ourselves in.”

Opare Addo disclosed that the management of the National Service Authority is actively working on pragmatic measures to ensure timely disbursement of allowances.

“I believe the management of the National Service Authority is going to introduce pragmatic steps to ensure that this does not happen again.”

Barker-Vormawor denies accusing NDC MPs of taking bribes

0

Lawyers for Oliver Barker-Vormawor, activist and organizer of Democracy Hub, have strongly denied allegations linking their client to claims of bribery involving majority members of Parliament’s Appointments Committee.

This comes after the Committee summoned Barker-Vormawor over a controversial social media post attributed to him, which alleged that committee members accepted bribes.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee on Wednesday, January 29, Barker-Vormawor’s lead counsel, Nana Ato Dadzie, firmly stated: “The statement is fake; this is not coming from Mr Vormawor. He never posted that statement. The statement reads: ‘NDC members on the Appointments Committee take monies from Mahama’s ministerial nominees before approving them, and the Deputy Speaker must submit himself to ORAL.’ This is not from Mr. Vormawor.”

However, the lawyers clarified that another post on Barker-Vormawor’s Facebook page accusing all the committee members of taking bribes before vetting was not meant to disparage committee members.

According to his lawyer, the post on his page was only meant to feed the public about some reports that had come to his knowledge.

Allegations Stir Public Interest

The claims, which sparked public debate, surfaced ahead of the vetting of Defence Minister-designate Dr. Edward Omane Boamah on January 28.

Bernard Ahiafor, Chairman of the Appointments Committee and 1st Deputy Speaker of Parliament, categorically rejected the accusations, describing them as baseless and damaging to the integrity of the vetting process.

Mr. Ahiafor subsequently directed the Clerk of the Committee to formally invite Barker-Vormawor to provide evidence supporting his allegations during a session scheduled for Wednesday, January 29.

Mussa Dankwah blasts Appointments Committee over Linda Ocloo’s vetting drama

0

Mussa Dankwah is the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics Mussa Dankwah is the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics

The Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah, has criticised members of the Appointments Committee for failing to conduct a thorough scrutiny of the Greater Accra Regional Minister-designate during the vetting process.

Dankwah, expressing his shock over the incident, condemned the lawmakers for not asking the ministerial nominee, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, any pertinent questions regarding her vision and goals for the region she is set to serve, especially given the significant challenges the region faces.

The pollster expressed concerns that the committee’s actions of overlooking crucial information could contribute to flawed systems and the appointment of unqualified individuals to positions, ultimately hindering effective performance and delivery.

He further noted that such cases fail to bring about positive or structural changes.

“Shocking, so no MP asked any question. I am truly shocked; indeed, some things will never change. We will never get there. Is it just a coincidence that no minority or majority MP asked a question? So, they could not ask any question despite numerous challenges facing the region?” he quizzed in a Facebook post on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.

Mussa Dankwah, still seeking answers regarding Linda Ocloo’s unusually short vetting, specifically questioned the competence of the nominee.

He raised concerns about whether the delegation present to support her may have had an influence on the committee’s decision-making process.

“Since when did powerful delegation accompanying a nominee equate to competence?” he added.

Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, the Greater Accra Regional Minister-designate, set a record as the fastest nominee to undergo vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament.

Her session on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, lasted less than 10 minutes, marking the shortest vetting process in the history of the 9th Parliament.

The nominee, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for the Shai-Osudoku Constituency, barely had the chance to introduce herself before the Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin intervened.

Afenyo-Markin simply acknowledged Ocloo’s presence and the delegation that accompanied her.

Committee Chairman Bernard Ahiafor followed up by recognizing her guests before promptly discharging her, bringing the vetting to a conclusion.

Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger formally withdraw from ECOWAS

0

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially acknowledged the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, the Republic of Mali, and the Republic of Niger from the regional bloc, effective today, Wednesday.

In a January 29 press statement released by the ECOWAS Commission, the organisation emphasised its commitment to regional solidarity and outlined transitional measures to minimise disruptions for citizens and businesses during this period.

The withdrawal of the three countries marks a shift in the regional dynamics of West Africa, as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have been key players in ECOWAS’ integration agenda.

Despite their exit, ECOWAS reaffirmed its determination to maintain open doors for future collaboration and engagement with these countries.

To ensure continuity and mitigate adverse impacts, ECOWAS issued directives to member states and relevant authorities to implement mitigate possible disruptions.

ECOWAS urged member countries to continue to recognise national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo, held by citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger until further notice.

The regional bloc also said goods and services originating from the three countries will continue to benefit from the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policies, ensuring uninterrupted trade flows.

Also, citizens of the three nations will retain their rights to visa-free movement, residence, and establishment within ECOWAS territories, in line with existing protocols.

The Commission stated that these arrangements will remain in effect until a comprehensive framework for future engagement with the three countries is determined by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

Joyce Bawa Mogtari Defends Emefa Hardcastle, Cites An Attempt To Silence Women

0

Former Deputy Transport Minister and aide to President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawa Mogtari, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the recent exchange between Emefa Hardcastle—the Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Commission—and Frank Annoh-Dompreh—the member of parliament and minority chief whip.

In reaction to the backlash Hardcastle has faced since yesterday, Joyce Bawa Mogtari took to her social media pages to highlight what she sees as a broader issue of gender bias in leadership and society as a whole.

“Let me say without any fear of equivocation that most often than not when we stand up for ourselves we are called disrespectful!” She stated emphatically.

Joyce Bawa Mogtari’s comment comes amid growing public debate over Hardcastle’s response to Annoh-Dompreh during a heated argument in Parliament. While some have accused Hardcastle of arrogance and disrespect, others argue that the criticism is rooted in gendered expectations of women in leadership.

According to Joyce Bawa Mogtari, society expect women to keep quiet and behave helpless, but once they stand up for themselves, they are being labeled as disrespectful.

Miss Lydia Forson also raised similar sentiments, citing general biased expectations of society from women in higher positions.

Joyce Bawa Mogtari’s statement has resonated with many, especially women’s right advocates, who see the incident as reflective of the challenges women face when asserting themselves in male dominated spaces. However, critics argue that professionalism and decorum should be upheld, regardless of gender.

As discussions continue, the incident has sparked a renewed calla for gender inclusivity and respect in political and professional engagements.

Guinness and its other brands in Ghana are expected to experience consistent growth thanks to Diageo’s utilization of Castel’s vast distribution network and knowledge of West and Central Africa. With a solid track record in the region, Castel is already a Diageo partner in 11 other African markets.

Popular Diageo brands, such as Malta Guinness, Orijin, Smirnoff Ice, Alvaro, and mainstream spirits, will still be produced and distributed by Guinness Ghana under the new licensing agreement.

A article on Diageo’s website claims that this deal is a component of the company’s larger portfolio management plan for Africa.

It follows the September 2024 sale of Diageo’s shareholding in Guinness Nigeria plc to Tolaram and the October 2023 launch of a dedicated spirits company to expand its premium spirits business in West Africa. Additionally, in July 2022, Diageo sold Guinness Cameroon to Castel, further consolidating its regional partnerships.

Diageo continues to have a strong presence in Africa, with key operations in East African Breweries Limited (Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda) and Diageo South West Central, alongside strategic distribution partnerships in 34 African countries.

Dayalan Nayager, President of Diageo Africa and Chief Commercial Officer, expressed confidence in the transition:

“Guinness Ghana is performing strongly, powered by a fantastic team. Through this transaction, I look forward to Guinness continuing to thrive. We are excited to extend our partnership with Castel, a trusted long-term partner with a proven track record.”

Gregory Clerc, CEO of Castel Group, highlighted the company’s commitment to expansion:

“This acquisition is a testament to Castel’s entrepreneurial spirit. We are proud to enter our 22nd African market, reaffirming our confidence in the continent’s potential.”

Following the transaction, Guinness Ghana will remain listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange. Completion of the deal is expected within 2025, pending regulatory approvals.

Takoradi Port will operate oil and gas terminal this year – Director

Entrance of Takoradi Port Entrance of Takoradi Port

The Port of Takoradi has projected a positive outlook for 2025 to maintain its position as a premier platform in the West African sub-region maritime space, the Port Director, Peter Amoo-Bediako, has forecasted.

He added “As we reflect on our achievements, we will continue to prioritise our focus on the future. We anticipate promising developments and accomplishments in this year.”

Mr Amoo-Bediako made the projection at a press soiree organised by the Takoradi Port, on Monday, to reflect with journalists on their collective journey and the opportunities ahead.

He indicated that the Port of Takoradi would, this year, initiate the commercial operations of the Oil and Gas Services Terminal, which was inaugurated in November 2024, to cater for the industry’s needs.

Again, management, he hinted, anticipate the start of the Prime Meridian Dock (PMD)’s Floating Dock Project, poised to establish the Port as a leading facility for ship repairs and maintenance, including those for offshore supply vessels.

“We expect to commence operations at this Genser Energy Cryonic Tank Farm facility in 2025. This will support gas exports, further diversify our portfolio of services, and strengthen the Port’s contribution to Ghana’s energy export strategy,” Mr Amoo-Bediako told journalists.

On cargo traffic outlook in 2025, the Port Director forecasted that the platform anticipates that contingent upon stable conditions, it would manage an increased cargo volume of 9.8 million metric tonnes this year.

The Port of Takoradi, Mr Amoo-Bediako mentioned, had since 1928, been a critical component of Ghana’s maritime trade, noting that “Our achievements in 2024 reflect the resilience, commitment, and innovation that consistently drive our operations.”

He reported the significant milestones the Port of Takoradi attained in 2024 and spoke about the successful handling of a transit vessel after over a decade of decline.

Significantly, he mentioned the milestone the port achieved by receiving a transit vessel laden with approximately 50,000 metric tonnes of bagged rice — the first of such occurrence in over a decade.

Mr Amoo-Bediako stressed that the cargo was discharged efficiently within an acceptable turnaround time, demonstrating the port’s capacity to handle high-volume transit cargo.

“We also had a remarkable growth in total cargo volumes. As of November 2024, we recorded an impressive 32.28 per cent growth in cargo volume, rising from 7.1 million metric tonnes in November 2023 to 9.4 million metric tonnes,” he added.

He reported that imported cargo volume as of November 2024 was 2,877,273 metric tonnes, compared to 2,591,340 metric tonnes recorded for the same period in 2023.

‘It Was Racism’ – Kwabena Kwabena Recounts Arrest In Germany During Tour

0

Ghanaian highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena has shared a painful memory from his 2007 European tour, recalling how he and fellow musicians Screwfaze and Reggie Zippy were arrested in Germany under troubling circumstances. Speaking on Okay FM on January 27, 2025, he described the experience as humiliating and racially motivated.

The incident occurred while they were driving from Amsterdam to Italy. Kwabena Kwabena recounted how immigration officers followed their car for over an hour before pulling them over. Despite presenting all the necessary documents, the officers detained them and took them to a station, where they were held for three days. The musician strongly believes their arrest was a clear case of racial profiling.

Their situation only began to improve after a white human rights lawyer stepped in, challenging the officers’ actions in court. Although the court ordered their release, the officers refused to return their passports, insisting on escalating the matter to a higher court.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Kwabena Kwabena expressed his frustration with the unjust treatment, calling it a harsh reminder of the discrimination faced by African artists touring Europe. His story shines a light on the challenges of racial prejudice and the need to address such injustices.

Not Even One Question- Franklin Cudjoe Condemns Committee’s Failure To Question Hon. Linda Ocloo

0

The Founding President of IMANI Africa, Mr. Franklin Cudjoe, has expressed deep concern over the manner in which the Appointments Committee handled the vetting of some ministerial nominees. He finds it unfortunate that Hon. Linda Ocloo, the Member of Parliament for Shai Osudoku and the nominee for Greater Accra Regional Minister, was not asked a single question during her vetting.

In a Facebook post on January 29, 2025, Franklin Cudjoe questioned the committee’s decision, stating:

“So, who is the nominated Greater Accra Region’s minister? What are her plans to make Accra look pretty, spatially liveable, and attract more tourists and improve the livelihoods of indigenous Ga people? Pity the Appointments Committee discharged her without asking a single question.”

His statement highlights growing concerns about the effectiveness of the vetting process and whether the Appointments Committee is thoroughly assessing the competence and vision of nominees before confirming them for crucial leadership roles.Franklin Cudjoe’s criticism did not stop at Hon. Linda Ocloo’s case. He further pointed out that another nominee appeared before the committee with an exaggerated and affected accent for a position that, in his opinion, should not even exist. He noted that this nominee did not seem to understand the responsibilities of the role he had been nominated for but instead focused on impressing the committee with an unintelligible accent.

According to the IMANI President, this lack of scrutiny and meaningful questioning during the vetting process raises serious concerns about the quality of leadership being approved for key governmental positions. Many Ghanaians expect ministers to present a clear vision for their roles, outlining specific policies and solutions to pressing regional and national issues. However, if nominees are confirmed without being properly interrogated, it casts doubt on whether they are truly fit for the positions they are given.

Franklin Cudjoe’s remarks have sparked discussions on social media, with many questioning the competence of both the nominees and the Appointments Committee. Some believe that the committee should have done its due diligence by asking probing questions to assess the nominees’ understanding of their roles, while others argue that political favoritism might have played a role in the lax vetting process.

As Ghanaians await the official confirmation of these nominees, the controversy surrounding their vetting raises a larger issue should the process be reformed to ensure that only the most qualified individuals are appointed to leadership positions?

Acting GRA Boss makes first public appearance amid protests by NDC supporters

0

The Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Kwesi Sarpong, has made his first public appearance following protests by some disgruntled NDC supporters over his appointment by President John Dramani Mahama.

Despite the controversy surrounding his selection for the top revenue mobilization role, Sarpong remains focused on optimizing limited resources to enhance government revenue for national development.

He made his appearance as the guest speaker at the African Tax Administration Forum in Accra.

On Monday, January 27, a group of aggrieved youth, believed to be affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), gathered at the headquarters of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to protest the appointment of Anthony Sarpong as Acting Commissioner-General.

President John Dramani Mahama on January 21, announced Mr. Sarpong’s appointment to the strategic role, responsible for overseeing Ghana’s tax collection and revenue mobilisation efforts.

Mr. Sarpong, an accomplished accountant and auditor, previously served as a Senior Partner at KPMG, a globally respected auditing and consulting firm.

However, his appointment has been widely regarded as a strategic move to bolster Ghana’s revenue systems at a time when the government faces pressure to meet fiscal targets and stabilise the economy.

Despite his qualifications, some NDC members have opposed the appointment, claiming Mr Sarpong has ties to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). This has raised concerns about his loyalty to the government’s revenue agenda and the ruling party’s influence over key institutions.

Captain Kwadwo Smart, the outspoken host of Onua Morning Show on Onua TV, has publicly urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, to summon Honorable Kennedy Ohene Agyapong for questioning following the MP’s explosive claim that he was offered a staggering $800 million to withdraw from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries.

The controversial allegation made by Agyapong has set off a firestorm of discussion in Ghana’s political and public spheres. Agyapong, a prominent figure within the NPP, stated that high-ranking party officials approached him with the immense sum of money in an attempt to persuade him to step aside and support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s candidacy during the primaries. The claim, if true, raises significant concerns about political maneuvering and the role of money in Ghanaian politics.

Captain Smart, known for his direct and often critical style of journalism, expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of any action taken by the police or other security agencies in response to the serious allegation. He stressed the need for transparency and accountability, especially given the scale of the claim and its potential implications for the country’s political integrity.

“How can someone be offered $800 million, especially in a country that is grappling with economic challenges? This is a matter that demands thorough investigation,” Captain Smart asserted during his segment on the Onua Morning Show. He further questioned where such a massive sum of money could come from, suggesting that the existence of such hidden funds could potentially point to financial resources that Ghana desperately needs.

The veteran journalist was not shy about his willingness to confront the issue head-on, emphasizing that he was not intimidated by Agyapong. “I am not afraid of Kennedy Agyapong. I am not like other journalists in Ghana. The IGP must invite him for interrogation to explain the source of that huge amount during the NPP primaries,” Captain Smart declared, firmly demanding action from law enforcement.

Captain Smart’s call for an investigation has ignited a wider conversation about the responsibility of political leaders and the role of law enforcement in holding them accountable. His remarks have sparked mixed reactions, with some supporting his call for a deeper inquiry into the allegations, while others have expressed concerns about the potential for political interference in the investigation.

As the political drama continues to unfold, many are watching closely to see whether the IGP or any other government agencies will take action on Captain Smart’s demands. The situation has added to the ongoing discussions about the influence of money in politics and the need for greater transparency in Ghana’s political processes.

For those interested in following the full development of this story, the video of Captain Smart’s comments can be viewed on Onua TV’s Facebook page here. The unfolding events will undoubtedly continue to capture the attention of both the public and political observers.

I have been sleeping with my father as ‘sacrifice’ to keep our family wealth

0

Dear GhanaWeb,

I am a twenty-four-year-old woman from a wealthy family in one of Accra’s most affluent areas. My father, who’s fifty-eight, is a key figure in the government and a highly influential man.

He has it all money, power, and connections. Growing up, I’ve always been under his wing, stunned by the luxurious life we lead, from first-class trips to any country I choose to the comforts of an opulent lifestyle.

In our household, everything was orchestrated with precision. As the eldest and my father’s favourite among my three siblings, I was accustomed to the luxuries of our life.

Then, one day, everything changed. My father called me into his office, which wasn’t unusual, but this time, his expression was more serious than usual.

Sitting in front of him, I can still remember the conversation that altered my life forever.

In a calm voice, he asked, “Do you love me?” I told him yes, that he was the man I loved most in the world. He then asked, “Do you love this life we lead, the travels, the luxury, all these beautiful things I give you?”

“Yes, daddy, I adore them. Thank you for everything,” I replied. He smiled, but something strange flickered in his eyes before he continued.

“You know, my daughter, all these things come with a price. Nothing is free in this world.” I was confused. What price? Everything seemed so perfect, so effortless.

Then he told me something that would change everything; he was part of a mystical group, and all the privileges we enjoyed came with sacrifices. And now, it was my turn to make a choice.

If I wanted this life to continue, I would have to help him.

Otherwise, everything will fall apart, I will die and he will become poor. I looked at him, the words swirling in my head, unable to comprehend.

For the first time, I saw my father cry. He told me the group demanded that he conceive a child with me, his first daughter.

My stomach churned. How could this be? My own father, asking such a thing, it was beyond unthinkable.

Then he said I had a month to think it over. He wouldn’t force me, but if I refused, I would die. My mother, my siblings, and I would be left to live like beggars. How could something like this even be possible?

For days, I was tormented by the thought of it. How could I refuse anything to the man who had given me everything? How could I turn my back on the life he provided?

I saw how the poor lived in the streets, their misery, and their struggle for every little comfort. Could I really accept such life? One month later, I made my decision to accept it.

The first encounter with my dad was strange but deep down, there was an emotion I couldn’t define. Overtime, these forbidden encounters took a different turn. I found myself not waiting for him to come to me. It was me who went to him. I was almost in love with my own father.

We found an excuse. I told everyone it was an imaginary boyfriend from university who got me pregnant before fleeing. No one ever questioned it. And thus, my daughter was born. Even after my daughter was born, the encounters didn’t stop. On the contrary every month, my father came to see me and we resumed.

He told me he could stop at any moment but I had to know what would happen if we stopped. He would have to die and we will lose everything. The only way to maintain our dream life was to continue.

Today, my daughter is five years old and she believes her grandfather is just a protective and caring man. She has no idea of what really goes on. But I can’t continue this anymore. I want a normal life, meet someone, marry, and have a real family. Each time I think about stopping, I see my father’s face, this crushing weight on my shoulders.

I’m trapped, I’m a prisoner of this cursed pact. And yet, a part of me has never been able to break this strange and unhealthy bond.

How can I escape this hell without condemning my father to a certain death? I want to be out of this life but how? My father said he is doing this to protect us but I’m not sure anymore. I’m completely lost, what should I do?

Oliver Barker-Vormawor appears before Appointments Committee following summons

Oliver Barker-Vormawor is a lawyer and social activist play videoOliver Barker-Vormawor is a lawyer and social activist

Social activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor is set to appear before the Appointments Committee of Parliament after being summoned to substantiate his claims regarding alleged bribery by members of the committee.

Barker-Vormawor accused committee members of accepting monetary bribes to expedite and approve ministerial nominees after their vetting process. He questioned why such corrupt practices were not being pursued by the anti-corruption committee, Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL).

“So, all the monies the ministerial appointees are being asked to pay to the Appointments Committee just to get approved—are those ones not affected by ORAL? Strange Republic,” he wrote in a Facebook post on January 24, 2025.

In response to these serious allegations, the Chairman of the Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, categorically refuted the claims, stating that no such incident had occurred.

According to him, he is willing to submit himself for an investigation, maintaining his integrity and insisting that he has not engaged in any corrupt activity.

“It is unfortunate that members of the Appointments Committee are being tagged with corruption. Our attention has been drawn to a media statement by Oliver Barker-Vormawor alleging that the Majority members of the committee have been demanding money before approving the nominees and that the chairman must submit himself to ORAL.

“Let me place on record that I am ever ready to submit myself to ORAL. The second aspect of the allegation suggests that all committee members were taking money from nominees before vetting and approval. This morning, instead of starting the vetting process at 10 a.m., we were called into a conclave to deliberate on this issue,” he said.

He added, “We need to stop certain attitudes. Therefore, I, Bernard Ahiafor, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and the Chairman of the Vetting Committee, want to place it on record that neither I nor any committee member has demanded money from any nominee before vetting and approval.”

Ahiafor has, therefore, instructed the Clerk of Parliament to summon Barker-Vormawor to appear before the committee and provide evidence to substantiate his claims.

The committee has warned that it will take drastic action, invoking its authority to address the matter, if Barker-Vormawor fails to honor the invitation.

“I will, therefore, direct the Clerk of the Committee to invite Oliver Barker-Vormawor to appear before the committee tomorrow between 10 a.m. and noon to provide evidence supporting his claim that we demand money from nominees before vetting and approval. If he fails to do so, we will invoke the powers of the committee under Article 103 and our own Standing Order 134. I so direct,” he added.

Bagbin expresses concern over Appointments Committee’s disregard for Parliamentary procedure

0

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has expressed concerns about the perceived disregard for established procedures in the Appointments Committee’s handling of President John Dramani Mahama’s ministerial nominees.

Speaker Bagbin noted that several complaints have been submitted to his Office, highlighting dissatisfaction with the committee’s conduct, which some believe is tarnishing its reputation.

Addressing Parliament in a formal communication on January 28, the Speaker emphasised the need for strict adherence to procedural guidelines to uphold the integrity of the Appointments Committee.

“Appointments Committee, we have crafted rules of how Appointments Committee should conduct the business of public hearing. That is the term used, public hearing of nominees of the presidents. I am not too sure there is reference to those rules in what I am witnessing myself.

“And I have received so many complaints from observers in Ghana and outside Ghana. This is an opportunity for me to draw your attention to it.”

How U.S. Deportations Could Crash Ghana’s Cedi – Mussa Dankwah Warns

0

The potential mass deportation of undocumented migrants in the United States is not just a humanitarian issue—it is an economic one, particularly for Ghana. Mussa Dankwah has laid out a compelling argument on how such an event could trigger a downward spiral in the Ghanaian economy, ultimately leading to a depreciation of the cedi.

He began by highlighting the crucial role remittances play in Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves. “Remittances from Ghanaian illegals will drop, leading to a reduction in our international reserves,” he pointed out. Many undocumented Ghanaians in the U.S. send money back home regularly. If these individuals are deported, their income sources will be cut off, reducing the flow of U.S. dollars into the country. This will negatively impact Ghana’s foreign currency reserves and put pressure on the cedi.

But the impact doesn’t stop there. Mussa explained that a rise in inflation in the U.S. could lead to an adjustment in the Federal Reserve’s policy rate. “Rise in US inflation will trigger Fed Reserve action by adjusting policy rate upward,” he predicted. If this happens, U.S. bond yields will rise, making them more attractive to investors compared to Ghanaian bonds.

This shift in investor confidence could be detrimental to Ghana’s economy. “International investors prefer US bonds to Ghana’s because they are unlikely to receive haircuts. As a result, they might flee our bond market to the US’s,” Mussa explained. Such a capital flight would mean foreign investors exiting Ghana’s bond market, further weakening the cedi as they exchange their cedi-denominated bonds for U.S. dollars.

The depreciation of the cedi is almost inevitable under these circumstances. As demand for the U.S. dollar rises and Ghana’s reserves dwindle, the exchange rate will worsen, leading to inflation. “Cedi depreciation would likely result in increased inflation, throwing out of the window the BoG single-digit inflation target,” Mussa warned. Ghana’s central bank would then have no choice but to raise policy rates in an attempt to control inflation.

However, this comes with its own set of challenges. Higher interest rates would make borrowing more expensive for businesses and individuals, stifling economic growth. “The cost of credit to you and businesses will go up,” he noted, signaling tough times ahead if such a scenario unfolds.

Mussa Dankwah’s insights demonstrate the interconnected nature of global economies. What happens in the U.S. does not stay in the U.S.—it has far-reaching consequences, especially for developing economies like Ghana’s.

Devastating fire ravages structures behind Trinity Gas in Dzorwulu

0

A devastating fire broke out early Wednesday morning, January 29, behind the Trinity Gas filling station in Dzorwulu, causing extensive damage to several properties.

The blaze rapidly spread through the area, engulfing a series of wooden structures and destroying valuable belongings.

Authorities and residents are working to determine the exact cause of the fire, but initial reports suggest it may have started at a Nigerian restaurant located behind Awo’s Unisex Boutique building.

According to witnesses, the fire erupted suddenly, consuming the restaurant and extending to nearby structures, which included shops and businesses in the area.

As news of the fire spread, local residents rushed to the scene to offer their help, with many seen trying to salvage belongings from the affected wooden structures before they could be completely destroyed by the fire.

The Ghana National Fire Service responded promptly to the emergency call, with fire trucks arriving on the scene just 15 minutes after the blaze was reported.

Firefighters worked to contain the flames, battling the fire to prevent it from spreading to other commercial properties.
