NPP govt didn’t leave behind buffers for debt servicing

0

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama and Minister of State for Government Communications, has refuted claims by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the current government was able to service debt payments due to buffers they left in its previous administration.

Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, former Finance Minister had said that the NPP government strategically built buffers in Ghana’s Debt Reserves Accounts to ensure the continuous servicing of the country’s debt obligations.

This came after President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, to honour the fourth coupon payment to Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) bondholders.

The Karaga MP noted that while the current administration is taking credit for the payment, it was important to recognise that the previous NPP government had already put in place financial mechanisms to support these obligations.

At a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday February 19, Kwakye Ofosu categorically stated that this narrative is untrue and provided details to support his assertion.

“Subsequent to the announcement of these payments and the announcement that the sinking fund has been reactivated, we have had some rebuttals from the NPP whose officials have claimed that we have been able to do that as a government only because they left some buffers and that it is not because of any specific intervention from President John Mahama. I wish to place on record that this narrative is untrue,” Kwakye Ofosu stated.

He explained that the sinking fund, officially known as the debt service reserve account, is where money is kept pending the payment of bondholders and other creditors. This account has both a cedi component and a dollar component, and statements of account can show transactions over a certain period.

Kwakye Ofosu challenged the NPP to provide evidence of the buffers they claimed to have left.

“For officials of the former government to be able to say that these payments and honoring of these obligations have been the outcome of work they did, they need to point specifically where those buffers were located,” he argued.

He noted that the last movement in the account under the NPP was on October 22, 2024, with a balance of $64,387, which is insufficient to cover payments in the range of GHS6 billion.

In contrast, on January 31, 2025, the NDC government, under Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, lodged an amount of $96,915,182 into the account.

“If you look at the cedi denominated reserve account, you will find also that when the NDC took over on January 7, 2025, the last time that anything had happened in that account before the NPP left was January 2, 2025. The amount of money in that account was GHS 155,463,435,” Kwakye Ofosu added.

He further stated that an additional GHS9 billion is currently sitting in the fund to pay for maturing coupons in July and August, bringing the total to GHS15 billion.

Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has revealed that the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, is in negotiations with major broadcasters, including SuperSport, to secure a deal that would increase the visibility and popularity of the Ghana Premier League.

Once a thriving competition, the Ghana Premier League has seen a sharp decline in attendance at match venues and limited television coverage, leading to a waning interest among fans.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, Ayariga disclosed that efforts are underway to reform the league, with a potential broadcast deal involving one of Africa’s biggest sports networks – SuperSport.

“The Minister of Sports has a major agenda to revive football at the district, regional, and national levels. He is already engaging with the media to explore ways to promote sports,” Ayariga stated.

“He has informed me that he is negotiating with SuperSport and other broadcasters to start covering our local leagues,” he added.

Currently, the Ghana Premier League lacks an official broadcaster, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) granting rights to selected TV channels to air games while also streaming matches via the GFA app.

Obuoho youth protest ‘unlawful’ burning of excavators by Forestry Commission

0

Some youth of Obuoho and Obuoho Fante located in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region are demonstrating against what they describe as the unlawful burning of excavators by the Forestry Commission.

The group clad in red and black attire and chanting war songs is demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of the personnel who burnt the excavators.

Last week some officers of the Rapid Unit of the Forestry Commission who visited the community set ablaze four excavators that were allegedly being used to invade the Atewa Forest and the Ayensu River.

Speaking to Citi News the youth group who denied invading the Atewa Forest to engage in galamsey and called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akufo Dampare, and the National Security Coordinator to immediately intervene to ensure the arrest and prosecution of the Forestry Commission officers whose actions were not sanctioned by the President.

The Assembly Member for Anum Apapamu North Adu-Gyamfi Douglas briefing the media reiterated the call from the youth indicating that the absence of small-scale mining in the community will increase the number of social vices.

“There is no work here, about five years ago, you could hear incidents of robbery and those kinds of stuff but for some time now, because of the small-scale mining, these social vices have reduced. If the small-scale mining sieze, it is going to affect the community.

“My checks indicate that one site can employ 50 people so with the two sites here, it means about 100 people work here,” he stated.

Ghana records first case of hMPV virus

0

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh – Minister of Health

Ghana has recorded one case of Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV).

This is the first case detected since the country begun testing for human metapneumovirus hMPV in January 2025.

Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, announced this on Tuesday in a brief to Parliament on ongoing disease outbreaks in the county.

He said the testing commenced in response to recent increases in respiratory cases in China and some temperate countries in December last year and a case was detected from an elderly person.

“So far, a total of ninety (90) samples have been selected for testing, and only one positive case has been detected for hMPV,” he said.

The Minister assured the public that the risk of HMPV in Ghana remains low, stating that the county has a robust surveillance system in place to monitor for respiratory viruses, including HMPV.

“The systems have been strengthened in recent years, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic,we assure the country that any case of HMPV will be quickly identified and managed to prevent spread,” he said.

Mr Akandoh said the Ministry of Health is fully committed to working with its partners to control the ongoing outbreaks and to protect the health of all

Ghanaians.

He said Ghana had strengthened her surveillance to detect and track cases and will continue to raise public awareness about prevention and control measures.

The Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a respiratory virus that can cause a range of respiratory illnesses, from mild cold-like symptoms to severe pneumonia.

While it can affect people of all ages, it is most commonly seen in young children, older adults, and those with weak immune systems.

The World Health Organisation says the virus spreads like other common cold viruses do, through infectious respiratory particles that spread through the air from a sick person to others.

This means a person can catch the virus when they are close to a sick person or sharing a closed space with them. It can also enter the body by touching contaminated surfaces like doorknobs or handles and then touching the eyes, nose or mouth.

According to the WHO, hMPV infections can be prevented by wearing a mask in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces.

It said the public can improve ventilation where possible by opening a window for air flow.

The WHO says the virus can be prevented by cleaning hands regularly and thoroughly, with either soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub.

It advised the public to avoiding touching eyes, nose or mouth without cleaning hands first.

“Having a strong immune system can also help fend off infections, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and sleeping properly helps,” it said.

When someone is sick, they can avoid making others sick by staying at home if they feel ill and covering nose and mouth with a tissue or bent elbow when coughing or sneezing.

The WHO says there is currently no vaccine licensed for use against hMPV, but research is ongoing.

Three jailed 50 years for foiled robbery

A Nigerian national and two Ghanaians have been sentenced to a total of 50 years imprisonment by the Assin-Kyerewere Circuit Court for attempted robbery at Wawase-Semanhyia in the Assin North District.

The convicts, Francis Baidoo, 30, driver; Wisdom Aleki, 24, tricycle rider and Mohammed Baba, 38, a Nigerian beautician, pleaded not guilty but were found guilty at the end of their trial.

The fourth person, Francis Larbi, is on the run and the police are on his heels.

The court presided over by Emmanuel Amoh-Yartey sentenced Baidoo and Aleki to 15 years each for conspiracy to commit crime and attempted robbery, whilst Baba was jailed 20 years for conspiracy to commit crime, causing harm and attempted robbery.

According to the Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Gilbert Abagna Anyongo, the convicts planned to rob a cocoa-purchasing clerk, Mr Emmanuel Obese, on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at Wawase-Semanhyia.

The Prosecutor said they hired a Toyota Vitz urban vehicle from Accra Mall to transport them to Wawase-Semanhyia  where they would execute their plan.

The convicts arrived at Wawase-Semanhyia at about 0100 hours, wielding a short gun and other offensive weapons, however, their plan was foiled when a witness spotted them and raised the alarm.

The convicts fled into the bush, but the community quickly organized a manhunt, leading to the arrest of the three, but Larbi escaped.

During the manhunt, Baba and Baidoo attacked commuters, inflicted knife wounds on them and robbed them but they were eventually overpowered and arrested.

‘Sonnie Badu isn’t a true man of God, he is a showman’ – Mzbel claims

0

Ghanaian musician Belinda Akua Amoah, popularly known as Mzbel, has raised doubts about the genuineness of gospel musician Sonnie Badu.

In a video shared on social media, Mzbel established that the gospel musician is not a true man of God, claiming that his primary focus is money rather than winning souls for Christ.

She emphasised that Sonnie Badu is a liar and that all he does is deceive Christians.

Backing her claims, Mzbel said, “Sonnie Badu preached at an event one day, and he was given an honorarium. He took a picture of it and sent it to me, asking me to show it to Shatta Wale.

“He asked me to tell Shatta Wale that he is not the only musician who has money in the country. He is not a man of God; what you see are shows. He is a showman, and it’s all about the money for him,” she said.

The statement from the “16 Years” hitmaker has since received mixed reactions on social media.

While some netizens are condemning her for tarnishing the image of Sonnie Badu, others have supported her claim.

Office of the Special Prosecutor must be scrapped, nothing will come out of it

Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng and NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah play videoSpecial Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng and NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah

The National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has called for the scrapping of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

According to Asiedu Nketiah, the OSP, as he predicted, has proven to be ineffective in the fight against corruption in the country.

He suggested that the OSP should be scrapped and its resources used to separate the Office of the Attorney General and the Ministry of Justice because an independent Attorney General is key to fighting corruption and not a Special Prosecutor.

“If the Constitution is not amended for new laws, the Special Prosecutor will remain ineffective in prosecuting people. All of the expenditure on the OSP has no benefit. We should cancel it and focus on splitting the Attorney General’s Office from the Ministry of Justice,” he said in the Twi dialect.

The NDC chairman explained that the OSP has not been effective because of the laws establishing it.

He said that the current law does not give the OSP the real power to go after people who engage in acts of corruption.

He added that the investigation the OSP has opened against former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta, like the many in the past, would amount to nothing.

“From the day the Office of the Special Prosecutor was created, I have always held the position that the work of the Special Prosecutor would go nowhere because of the laws establishing the office. I said that he (the Special Prosecutor) would not be able to prosecute any person, and to date, no person has been prosecuted… He declared Ofori-Atta wanted, but it has not amounted to anything.

“If we want someone who would fight corruption ruthlessly, it should be someone who can bite. It should not be someone who would be making all the noise, and at the end of the day, nothing happens. I’m still not confident that he is going to achieve any results.”

Background:

On Wednesday, February 12, 2025, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), while updating the public on its ongoing investigations at a press conference in Accra, declared Ken Ofori-Atta wanted.

The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, declared Ofori-Atta a fugitive wanted for corruption and corruption-related offences in a number of cases his office was investigating, including the renegotiation contract between ECG and Beijing Jao, procurement over the National Cathedral, contracts awarded by the Health Ministry to Service Ghana Auto Limited/Ambulances, and the SML-GRA deal.

He accused the former minister of orchestrating a recently reported raid on his residence by alleged military personnel to discredit the OSP.

The raid and the wanted notice against Ofori-Atta were heavily debated in Ghana’s Parliament.

Members of the Minority Caucus slammed the use of the military to raid Ofori-Atta’s home, while their colleagues in the Majority Caucus argued that the previous NPP government did worse.

The leader of the Majority Caucus, Mahama Ayariga, confirmed that the raid did happen and subsequently apologised to Ofori-Atta and the public over the raid.

The OSP subsequently removed the former minister from its list of persons declared fugitives and wanted for various offences.

It explained that its decision to remove him from the list was after it received an indication of when he (Ofori-Atta) would be returning to the country.

How to have a classy wedding with GH¢100,000

0

GhanaWeb Feature by Stella Dziedzorm Sogli

Ghana’s economic challenges affect every sector of the economy, impacting both the cost of living and the general standard of living for the average Ghanaian.

Today, many Ghanaians struggle to afford necessities, let alone indulge in “guilty pleasures.”

A significant number live by insufficient monthly salaries commonly referred to as “hand to mouth” in social conversations.

For many, affording three square meals a day has become a luxury. Young people, in particular, are being forced to put their dreams on hold simply because they cannot afford to pursue them.

A young graduate, for instance, may find it difficult to go through life’s major milestones furthering their education, acquiring property, or starting a family without making serious financial sacrifices.

This harsh economic reality has led many to reconsider their childhood dreams of having a grand, fairy-tale wedding. Instead, they are opting for simple, affordable ceremonies that minimize financial strain.

Having observed this trend, GhanaWeb Business decided to conduct research and compile this guide to help couples who want to settle down but struggle to raise huge sums of money or don’t want to exhaust their savings on a one-day event.

Let’s be clear, this guide is for those who want to keep their wedding simple but classy without breaking the bank.

But if you have the financial means to afford a lavish and extravagant wedding, then by all means, go for it!

Now, let’s explore how you can plan a beautiful wedding within a GH¢100,000 budget.

Smart cost-cutting strategies for your wedding

Skip the wedding planner – Excel is your best friend!

Instead of hiring a professional wedding planner, create a simple spreadsheet to track your budget and expenses.

This will save you approximately GH¢10,000 while allowing you to personalize the wedding to suit your preferences and taste.

Use a family property as your venue

If your family has a spacious home or compound, consider transforming it into the perfect wedding venue instead of renting an event center.

This can save you around GH¢5,000 on venue costs.

Combine your traditional and white wedding on the same day

Holding both ceremonies on the same day reduces expenses on hair, makeup, transportation, food, and even venue décor. You can seamlessly transition from the traditional wedding to the white wedding with just a slight modification in decoration.

Limit your guest list

Not everyone needs to be at your wedding. A smaller guest list means fewer expenses on food, drinks, seating, and venue space. Consider having your wedding on a weekday to naturally limit attendance and reduce costs.

Ditch the big reception

If you can’t afford an elaborate wedding reception, opt for an intimate post-wedding dinner with close family and friends instead. This will help keep costs manageable while still creating a special moment to celebrate.

Minimize the bridal party

You don’t need a large bridal party with numerous bridesmaids and groomsmen. A smaller lineup will cut down on expenses related to outfits, gifts, and coordination.

How to allocate your GH¢100,000 wedding budget

Now that we have identified ways to reduce costs, let’s break down how you can allocate your budget effectively:

1. Attire – GH¢20,000

Wedding dress, suit, hair, makeup, shoes, and accessories

Tip: Instead of splurging on a custom-made designer gown or suit, buy from reputable local vendors who offer equally stunning options at a fraction of the price.

Additional expenses:

Wedding rings

Dowry and traditional engagement items (depending on family customs)

2. Decoration – GH¢10,000

Wedding décor is a major cost factor, so it’s best to work with vendors you already know or have been recommended to you.

Tip: Negotiating discounts with vendors and keeping décor minimal yet elegant can help you stay within budget.

3. Food, Water & Drinks – GH¢10,000

Catering costs can quickly spiral out of control, so it’s crucial to plan wisely.

Tip: Choose a simple but delicious menu, and avoid an open bar if possible.

4. Photography, MC & DJ – GH¢10,000

Capturing memories is essential, so set aside a reasonable amount for professional photography and videography.

Hiring a good MC and DJ ensures smooth entertainment throughout the event.

5. Miscellaneous – GH¢30,000

Unexpected expenses always arise, so having a contingency fund is key. This could cover last-minute décor changes, additional guests, transportation costs, or emergency vendor payments.

Final thoughts

This budget guide is meant to serve as a reference for couples who want a memorable and cost-effective wedding. However, the budget breakdown is flexible and can be adjusted based on your personal preferences and priorities.

Ultimately, the key to a successful wedding is celebrating love without financial stress. Whether you choose to spend GH¢100,000 or GH¢10,000, the most important thing is starting your marriage on a solid foundation free from unnecessary debt and regret.

Nigerians hit back at Atalanta coach Gasperini for publicly criticizing Ademola Lookman

Ademola Lookman shakes Gian Piero Gasperini after a game Ademola Lookman shakes Gian Piero Gasperini after a game

Nigerian football fans have come to the defense of Ademola Lookman after the Atalanta winger faced harsh criticism from his coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, following their 3-1 defeat to Club Brugge in the Champions League playoffs on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

Gasperini’s scathing remarks about Lookman’s penalty miss sparked a fierce backlash from Nigerian supporters, who took to social media to express their displeasure and defend their compatriot.

During his post-match press conference, the Italian coach did not hold back, labeling Lookman as one of the worst penalty takers he has ever seen.

“Ademola Lookman is one of the worst penalty takers I’ve ever seen. He wanted to take the penalty after scoring a goal. He took the ball despite Retegui and De Ketelaere being available to take it… I didn’t like what Lookman did.”

These comments did not sit well with many football fans, especially Nigerians, who quickly took to X (formerly Twitter) to hit back at Gasperini.

They pointed out that Retegui had recently missed a penalty against Arsenal, yet Gasperini had not directed any harsh words at him.

Others also criticized the coach for publicly blasting the player who had helped him win his first-ever trophy, demanding more respect for the reigning African Player of the Year.

Stormzy critics condemn rapper in posters around London as anger grows over McDonald’s deal and Palestine post

0

Stormzy’s critics have put up posters around London that condemn the rapper’s deal with McDonald’s amid claims of hypocrisy.

The Vossi Bop singer, 30, unveiled his limited-edition McDonald’s meal, “The Stormzy Meal”, last week and came under fire for working with a company who has appeared to support Israel – when he had previously shared a pro-Palestinian message.

The fast-food chain has been boycotted by pro-Palestine campaigners after McDonald’s in Israel gave out thousands of free meals to Israeli forces and citizens following Hamas’ attack on Israel in 2023.

Anger among campaigners deepened after it emerged Stormzy’s collaboration with the chain came after he appeared to delete a “free Palestine” post he’d shared on Instagram last year.

Critics have accused him of “selling out” and now stickers have appeared around McDonald’s drive-thrus in the capital that read: “We regret to inform you that Stormzy has sold out. Apologies for any disappointment.”

The poster, designed by London-based artist Darren Cullen, features red, white, and black lettering and the yellow McDonald’s logo.

Cullen shared snaps of them pasted to the exterior of various McDonald’s branches on Instagram and wrote: “These ‘Stormzy has sold out’ signs are now on every McDonald’s drive-thru in south London after he sold out to McDonald’s in the middle of the boycott for Gaza and deleted pro-Palestine posts as part of the deal.”

He added: “It’s still possible for Stormzy to do the right thing. Cancel the deal and stand with Palestine.

“Leaving that much money on the table isn’t easy, but he’s already a multi-millionaire and an artist’s credibility is worth far more than whatever McDonald’s is willing to pay for it.”

Cullen’s post has received almost 20,000 likes while his video showing the posters at different chains has racked up 100,000 views.

Pro-Palestine supporters praised the stunt, writing, “Genius,” and “Love it when the community gets creative!”

Another revealed they’d seen similar artwork denouncing Stormzy at a bus shelter.

“Very proudly saw that someone has defaced a bus shelter near me with similar graffiti,” one commented.

“So sad he couldn’t stand by his principles,” a third posted and another user raged: “Sell out. Hope his concert bookings are cancelled and the public shun him.”

The Standard has contacted Stormzy’s representative for comment.

Sources close to the Vossi Bop rapper told Sky News that it “is simply not true” that the “archiving” of his Instagram post and the release of the McDonald’s campaign are linked.

Last year, the singer put up a post that read: “I hope everyone is good, some fleeting thoughts.

“1. Free Palestine. 2. In the future, if there is ever a clear injustice in the world no matter how big or small, 100 times out of 100 I will always be on the side of the oppressed. Unequivocally. As I always have been.”

Fans later noticed the post has been removed.

His new “Stormzy Meal” is made up of his favourite order at the chain – nine chicken nuggets, fries, BBQ sauce, Sprite, and an Oreo McFlurry.

Some customers have been boycotting McDonald’s in the Middle East over its perceived support of Israel.

In 2023, it was reported that McDonald’s branches in Israel gave out free meals to Israeli soldiers.

Franchise owners in countries such as Kuwait, Malaysia and Pakistan have since shared statements distancing themselves from the move.

McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski has previously denied that the company has taken sides in the conflict, calling the boycotts “disheartening and ill-founded” and blaming it on “misinformation”.

It comes as the Israeli government and Hamas continue to release hostages as part of an ongoing ceasefire agreement.

The war started when Hamas killed around 1,200 people and took hundreds of hostages in a terror attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023.

Israel then launched a bombing and ground campaign in Gaza, killing more than 46,000 Palestinians, Gaza’s health ministry reported.

GFA President optimistic about change in local football after latest reforms

0

By Simon Asare

Accra, Feb. 19, GNA – Mr. Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), is optimistic about a positive change in local football after the adoption of enhanced Matchday Safety and Security Protocols.

According to the GFA President, the incident that led to the death of a football fan in Nsoatre was unfortunate and regrettable, which triggered the need to enhance matchday protocols.

Speaking to Match Commissioners at the GFA Secretariat in Accra, Mr. Okraku noted that their truthfulness and honesty in the discharge of their duties would prove crucial in improving the game.

“We’ll be very, very fair in assessing your work. Be honest. Those who fall below the line, unfortunately will leave us. When you hear the discourse in the public space, you would admit that all is not well. And if it is that we could cure what is seen not to be well, this is the most opportune time.

“The clarion call from Ghanaians is that something has to change, and we have to react positively to it as a family. Hopefully, the Premier League will come back soon but this is part of the process of bringing back our beloved GPL.

“When we come back, we have to ensure that the change that our consumers are calling for will be supported by the family that has gathered here,” President Okraku said.

He also assured Match Commissioners of maximum protection in the dispensation of their duties while continuous efforts are made to educate the diverse patrons of our game.

“We occupy a special place in our sports. We play a very important role in the management of our game. The incidents that happened in Nsoatre has become a catalyst for us to re-look at how football has been delivered by all of us.

“I honestly believe that we have the power to right the wrongs in football, “Again, like I said the last time I met you, I have absolute trust in the group that we have here. I know that we can deliver football in the way it has to be delivered,” said Mr Okraku.

The GFA President urged Match Commissioners to take an active role in enforcing the safety protocols and ensuring that any potential security threats are found and addressed before, during, and after matches.

He directed them to collaborate closely with local security agencies to maintain order.

We won’t endorse any appointment by Mahama in Amansie South – Assembly members threaten

0

Assembly members in the 26 electoral areas of the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region have threatened to boycott the confirmation of the president’s nominee for district chief executive.

They are unhappy the district coordinating director, Nana Opoku Ababio, swore in some government appointees into the assembly without their presence.

Assembly Member for Manso Nkran electoral area, Joseph Antwi Prempeh, who led the press conference said it is unfair and disrespectful to the assembly members for such an exercise to be conducted on their blind side.

“We will also kick against the President’s appointment which will need our participation,” he said. “Our motive is to support government business but the coordinator’s disrespect to us will push us to kick against government business”.

Other assembly members expressed worry that not a single member of the house was invited.

“We represent over four thousand members in our communities in the assembly, so why do you want to sideline our opinions,” Ebenezer Oppong of Aboaso electoral area quizzed.

The Coordinating Director for Amansie South District, Nana Opoku Ababio, however, explained that a letter was issued informing the assembly members of the President’s appointment to the district.

“We did not officially invite anybody since this is a short ceremony and it doesn’t breach any law. We are on good terms and it’s not the intention to underestimate their opinion,” he said.

Don’t blame Mahama for assault on journalists

0

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama and Minister of State for Government Communications, has dismissed claims that the government is responsible for recent assaults on journalists.

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Kwabena Dwumfour on Tuesday, February 18 strongly condemned the Mahama administration over the rising number of assaults on journalists.

Dwumfour revealed that since the start of President Mahama’s administration, seven cases of journalist attacks have been recorded, describing the situation as “unprecedented.”

Expressing deep concern over the lack of accountability for perpetrators, he criticised the government’s failure to take decisive action against those responsible.

But speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday February 19, Kwakye Ofosu described the narrative as “most regrettable” and unfair to President Mahama, the government, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), and the journalists reported to have been attacked.

“It was claimed that seven journalists had been attacked and statements were made that sought to create the impression that there is some design by Mahama and his government to attack journalists. It is a most regrettable narrative. We do not think that it is fair to President Mahama, it is fair to the government, it is even fair to the GJA or even to the journalists who are reported to have been attacked,” Kwakye Ofosu stated.

The Minister revealed that he had engaged the President of the GJA to discuss the issues and find out what informed the press conference. They agreed to have a direct interaction between his office and the GJA early next week to address any concerns that journalists may have.

“I sought to find out exactly what informed that press conference and why other alternative approaches were not adopted to discuss the matters with the view to seeking redress for those who might have been affected. After the conversation, we agreed that early next week there should be a direct interaction between my office and the GJA,” he explained.

Kwakye Ofosu expressed dismay at the way the narrative was presented, creating a misleading impression about the government and President Mahama.

He emphasised President Mahama’s affable nature and good standing with the GJA, asserting that the President would never supervise a dispensation where journalists are attacked.

“All of you are aware that President Mahama is an easy-going, down-to-earth, affable individual who relates well with all manner of people. He is a member of the GJA in good standing. Essentially, he is one of you and therefore he will be the last person to supervise a dispensation where journalists are attacked,” he stressed.

Kwakye Ofosu also refuted the notion that the government was unhappy with certain journalists and was carrying out reprisals against them.

“The way that the press conference was addressed and the way that the matters were couched created the impression that some journalists had perhaps said or written something that the government was unhappy about and therefore the government was carrying out reprisals against them.

“But that is completely incorrect. It is not true and nothing of the sort has happened,” he affirmed.

Court throws out case against NPP’s Collins Amoah

0

In a significant legal victory, the Accra Circuit Court 3, presided over by Her Honour Susana Eduful, has today, 19th February 2025, struck out the tax fraud case against Collins Amoah, citing a lack of locus standi and evidentiary basis.

This ruling not only exonerates Amoah but also exposes a deliberate attempt to tarnish his reputation for political gain.

From the outset, the allegations against Collins Amoah appeared to be politically motivated. A man’s reputation precedes him, and Amoah has earned a good one over the years through hard work, prudence, and integrity.

Anyone with discernment could see that this was an orchestrated effort by adversaries using mala fides (bad faith) litigation as a tool for character assassination.

In the realm of politics, where perception often overshadows truth, false accusations can cause irreparable damage.

However, the principles of audi alteram partem (let the other side be heard) and nemo tenetur se ipsum accusare (no one is bound to incriminate himself) have prevailed in Amoah’s favour, reaffirming the fundamental legal doctrine that an accused person remains innocent until proven guilty.

Green Business Competitions create 104 jobs, generate over GHS4m in six months

0

Unemployment in Ghana presents a significant challenge with the Ghana Statistical Service reporting an unemployment rate of 4.5% in the third quarter of 2023 and the average unemployment rate for the first three quarters of 2023 at 14.7%.

The Green Business Competitions for Micro Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (MSMEs), collaborative initiative by the German Development Corporation and the Ashesi University’s Ghana Climate Innovation Centre (GCIC), is tackling this crisis head-on.

Through its first cohort, the program has successfully incubated 29 MSMEs across five regions, leading to the generation of GHS 4,353,642 in revenue, an additional GHS 2,937,640 raised in investment and funding creation of 104 new jobs in six months more than the target of 100 jobs in a year.

This programme supports and scales up Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) operating within Ghana’s green economy focusing on businesses that are or seeking to adopt sustainable and climate-adaptive business models, aligning with Ghana’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), to mitigate climate change.

Participating MSMEs receive comprehensive advisory services, technical assistance, and financial support to enhance their operations and fortify their climate adaptation practices, create green jobs and encourage sustainable business practices that benefit both the environment and the economy.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Dr Christian Jan, Head of Programme, Support to the Private and Financial Sector (PFS) Programme at GIZ stated that “The German Development Cooperation through GIZ’s mission is to support sustainable development in Ghana and our efforts are aligned with priorities and international commitments to ensure businesses get access to the right networks, financing and support to thrive.”

He further challenged the businesses, “Aim high, be resilient and push boundaries. Ghana needs innovators and not just business owners.”

The programme also welcomed it’s second cohort of thirty-one MSMEs selected from five sectors including climate-smart agriculture, waste management, water management, energy efficiency and greening businesses.

Ruka Sanusi, the Executive Director of the Ghana Climate Innovation Centre, welcomed the new businesses. She emphasized, “This accelerator will push you to think bigger, see beyond the familiar and question your long-held assumptions to do business.” She reminded the businesses “While funding is important, the real value of this incubator lies in the new knowledge to be gained, the networks that will be built and the insights that could propel you into opportunities far beyond what you have imagined.”

Highlighting the impact of the programme on his business, Kojo Mensah Adom, Cohort 1 member and CEO of Grow It Green, shared that GCIC’s grant funding empowered them to invest in processing equipment and renewable energy solutions, driving sustainable growth.

He said, “GCIC’s grant funding enabled us to invest in processing equipment and renewable energy options, scaling our operations sustainably.”

He added “Masterclasses on climate change, investment readiness, and financial management, ESG and Taxation provided a solid foundation. These lessons were crucial in closing our first private equity raise and making our business attractive to investors.”

Mr Mensah Adom thanked GCIC and GIZ for the support through the programme.

Funded by the German Development Cooperation through GIZ and implemented by the GCIC, the Green Business Competition for MSMEs, promises to play a vital role in building a more resilient and prosperous future for Ghana, driven by a thriving green economy.

‘Bold reforms needed’ – Movement for Change urges Mahama to tackle corruption head-on

0

Movement for Change is calling for compulsory asset declaration and lifestyle audits Movement for Change is calling for compulsory asset declaration and lifestyle audits

The canker of corruption remains one of the biggest challenges confronting Ghana. While successive governments have spoken passionately about tackling the menace, little progress has been made in effectively addressing it.

Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change has emphasized the need for a more radical and institutionalized approach, warning that Ghana risks falling into the familiar pattern of “No Action, Talk Only” (NATO) if concrete measures are not taken.

At a press conference held at the headquarters of the Movement in Accra on February 18, 2025, the group outlined a plan to fight corruption effectively.

The event, led by the spokesperson of the Movement, Andrew Appiah Danquah, highlighted the need for a more aggressive, structured, and independent approach to tackling corruption.

“While the government’s recent efforts, such as the establishment of the ORAL Team and the actions of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) may signal progress, these measures alone are insufficient.”

“The ongoing investigations, including those involving former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, provide an opportunity for due process to take its course. However, the Movement for Change insists that systemic reforms are needed to ensure that corruption is tackled comprehensively and not selectively,” he explained.

As part of its Great Transformational Plan (GTP), the Movement for Change has outlined six key measures to curb corruption. The first is the creation of an Anti-Corruption Czar with full constitutional backing.

This office, which would replace the current Special Prosecutor’s establishment, would have prosecutorial powers protected under the Constitution, making it immune from political interference.

The movement believes that as an independent constitutional body, the Czar would be better equipped to take on corruption without fear or favor.

Another key proposal is the consolidation of all anti-corruption laws into a single legal framework. Currently, multiple institutions – including the OSP, EOCO, CHRAJ, the Police CID, and National Security – handle corruption cases, leading to confusion and inefficiency.

The Movement for Change argues that merging these laws into a unified Anti-Corruption Act will ensure clarity, define corruption-related offenses explicitly, and introduce stringent penalties for offenders, especially political appointees and public officials.

The Movement for Change also called for compulsory asset declaration and lifestyle audits for public officials.

The group insists that periodic and verifiable asset declarations, coupled with real-time monitoring of unexplained wealth, will serve as a strong deterrent against corruption.

“This will prevent public officials from illegally amassing wealth while in office,” it noted.

In addition, the movement is pushing for procurement system reforms to eliminate political patronage and cronyism. It believes that Ghana’s current procurement system is riddled with corruption, where contracts are awarded based on political affiliations rather than merit.

“Reforming procurement laws will ensure greater transparency and accountability in public sector spending.”

Recognizing the role of citizens in fighting corruption, the Movement for Change is proposing the introduction of an Anti-Corruption Citizens’ Charter to empower Ghanaians to act as watchdogs.

This initiative will provide strong legal protections for whistleblowers and offer incentives to those who expose corruption.

Additionally, the movement also wants greater support for civil society organizations advocating against corruption, ensuring that no government official – regardless of rank – can manipulate the system for personal gain.

The Movement for Change is urging President Mahama to take tougher actions on corruption beyond mere rhetoric. It insists that the fight against corruption must be institutionalized through strong laws and independent bodies, rather than relying on political will.

Without bold reforms, corruption will continue to cripple the nation’s progress and deepen public distrust in government.

Ghana’s Capital Market Return: A high-stakes risk amid debt crisis

0

Dr. Felix Larry ESSILFIE

Ghana’s economic recovery remains fragile, with significant challenges in debt sustainability, fiscal consolidation, and external financing.

The recent caution by the World Bank against an early return to international capital markets underscores the complex interplay of macroeconomic risks and policy imperatives that the government must carefully navigate.

<! — Revive Adserver Asynchronous JS Tag – Generated with Revive Adserver v5.4.1 –>

Given Ghana’s history of heavy reliance on external borrowing, a premature re-entry into the capital markets could exacerbate existing vulnerabilities, undermining the progress made under the ongoing IMF-supported program. The urgency of fiscal discipline, debt management, and revenue mobilization cannot be overstated, as the country stands at a critical juncture where policy missteps could lead to severe economic consequences.

Ghana’s economic landscape has been marked by persistent macroeconomic vulnerabilities over the eight years. A combination of high fiscal deficits, a rapidly rising public debt burden, and external imbalances has pushed the economy into distress, necessitating multilateral intervention.

By 2022, Ghana’s public debt-to-GDP ratio had exceeded 90%, an unsustainable level that eroded investor confidence and triggered a severe liquidity crisis. The decision to seek a $3 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was a direct response to these mounting pressures, providing a structured framework to restore macroeconomic stability through fiscal consolidation, debt restructuring, and structural reforms.

A fundamental component of the IMF-supported program is the commitment to prudent fiscal management. This includes expenditure rationalization, enhanced revenue mobilization, and reducing reliance on commercial borrowing. The domestic debt exchange program and ongoing negotiations with external creditors, including Eurobond holders and bilateral lenders, are intended to restructure Ghana’s unsustainable debt portfolio. However, these efforts remain incomplete, and any deviation from the IMF program’s fiscal targets could derail the broader stabilization agenda.

Returning to capital markets prematurely presents considerable risks that could undermine Ghana’s recovery trajectory. One of the most immediate concerns is the high interest rate premium that Ghana would face in the current global financial environment. Sovereign credit ratings for the country remain highly speculative, with agencies such as Moody’s and S&P assigning ratings in the CCC/Caa range.

This places Ghana in a category where investors demand significantly higher risk premiums to compensate for potential default risks. In practical terms, any new Eurobond issuance would likely attract interest rates well above 10–12%, significantly higher than the pre-crisis levels of 7–8%. Given the already elevated debt servicing burden, taking on new, expensive debt would further strain the fiscal position, reducing the government’s ability to finance critical expenditures and undermining the IMF’s fiscal consolidation efforts.

Moreover, investor confidence remains weak, with lingering concerns about Ghana’s ability to meet its debt obligations post-restructuring. The debt restructuring process, while necessary, has created an environment of uncertainty that discourages long-term capital inflows.

The international investment community remains cautious, and any attempt to issue new bonds before completing the restructuring process could lead to under-subscription or distressed pricing, further complicating Ghana’s financing strategy. The risks associated with debt service pressures are particularly pronounced in an environment where external debt obligations already consume a substantial share of government revenue.

Taking on additional commercial debt at higher interest rates could exacerbate liquidity risks, making it difficult for the government to meet fiscal targets without resorting to further austerity measures or currency depreciation.

An early return to capital markets could also have significant exchange rate implications. Ghana’s foreign exchange market has experienced volatility, with depreciation pressures stemming from both structural factors and external shocks.

A premature bond issuance would necessitate additional foreign currency inflows to service external debt, which could increase demand for foreign exchange and lead to renewed depreciation of the cedi. This, in turn, would fuel imported inflation, eroding the real purchasing power of households and businesses. Such a scenario would counteract the inflation-targeting measures implemented by the Bank of Ghana, complicating monetary policy management.

While there are potential benefits to market re-entry, these advantages are largely conditional on a more favorable macroeconomic environment. A successful bond issuance could provide short-term liquidity relief, easing fiscal constraints and financing critical development projects.

Additionally, if timed correctly, it could serve as a signal to investors that Ghana’s economic reforms are yielding results, thereby improving market confidence. However, these benefits are only realizable if Ghana strengthens its fiscal position, stabilizes macroeconomic indicators, and restores credibility in its debt management framework. As of now, these conditions have not been fully met, making the risks associated with premature borrowing outweigh any potential benefits.

The broader fiscal policy landscape further underscores the importance of a cautious approach. Ghana’s fiscal consolidation efforts under the IMF program are centered on enhancing domestic revenue mobilization and rationalizing expenditure. The country’s tax-to-GDP ratio remains below 14%, significantly lower than the regional average of 18–20%, reflecting systemic inefficiencies in tax collection and compliance.

Addressing these gaps through broad-based tax reforms, including tax base expansion and digital tax administration, is critical for reducing reliance on external borrowing. Similarly, expenditure rationalization measures, such as improved state-owned enterprise (SOE) financial management and subsidy restructuring, must be pursued to create fiscal space for priority investments. Without these reforms, any new external borrowing would only perpetuate the cycle of fiscal distress.

The World Bank’s caution aligns with empirical evidence from countries that have navigated similar economic recovery paths under IMF supervision. Argentina’s experience from 2017 to 2019 provides a stark warning. After securing an IMF bailout, Argentina rushed back to international markets, issuing high-yield bonds that ultimately led to a severe currency crisis and a second IMF intervention.

Zambia’s recent debt crisis also highlights the dangers of premature market re-entry. After defaulting on its Eurobonds, Zambia struggled to regain investor confidence, and attempts to issue new bonds at unfavorable terms only deepened its economic woes. These cases reinforce the importance of sequencing debt restructuring and market re-entry to avoid exacerbating macroeconomic vulnerabilities.

While the World Bank’s warning is well-founded, there is room for strategic re-engagement with capital markets under more favorable conditions. Ghana must first strengthen its fiscal and debt management policies to build a credible foundation for future borrowing.

Enhancing domestic revenue mobilization through progressive tax reforms and reducing tax exemptions should be a top priority. Rationalizing expenditure by streamlining subsidies and improving SOE efficiency is equally critical. A well-structured debt refinancing strategy that prioritizes concessional financing over commercial debt will help reduce debt servicing costs and mitigate liquidity risks.

Timing market re-entry wisely is also crucial. Government must demonstrate tangible progress in meeting IMF fiscal targets, stabilizing inflation, and building external reserves before considering a Eurobond issuance. Engaging with credit rating agencies to improve the country’s sovereign rating will be essential in securing more favorable borrowing terms. Alternative financing mechanisms, such as public-private partnerships, diaspora bonds, and green bonds, should be explored to diversify funding sources and reduce dependence on volatile capital markets.

Restoring investor confidence will require transparent policymaking, clear communication on debt restructuring progress, and a disciplined fiscal framework. Strengthening foreign exchange reserves will provide a buffer against currency volatility, ensuring that any future market re-entry does not lead to undue pressure on the cedi.

The World Bank’s warning against premature market re-entry is a prudent advisory that Ghana must heed. The country’s macroeconomic fundamentals remain fragile, and a premature return to capital markets would likely result in high borrowing costs, increased debt vulnerabilities, and potential credibility risks. Ghana’s path to sustainable economic recovery lies in prudent fiscal management, structural reforms, and a well-calibrated debt strategy that prioritizes long-term resilience over short-term liquidity relief.

By exercising patience and adhering to a disciplined fiscal framework, Ghana can restore debt sustainability, rebuild investor confidence, and re-enter capital markets under more favorable conditions that support sustained economic growth.

I was spending GH¢2,800 weekly on purchasing blood for my mother – Perez Musik on cancer battle

0

Gospel musician, Perez Musik Gospel musician, Perez Musik

Popular gospel musician, Frank Tagoe, popularly known as Perez Musik, has shared the harrowing experience he faced while struggling to find blood donors to save his mother’s life during her battle with cancer two years ago.

In a viral video making waves on social media, the “Hewale Lala” hitmaker spoke at a blood donation exercise, recounting the challenges his family endured in securing blood for his mother’s regular transfusions.

“About two years ago, my mother was diagnosed with cancer, and her treatment required regular blood transfusions. Every week, we had to search for blood, and it became an overwhelming task,” Perez Musik shared.

He disclosed that the family often encountered situations at hospitals where they were told there was no blood available.

He said some opportunistic individuals took advantage of their desperation by selling blood at inflated prices.

“Sometimes, we’d arrive at the hospital, only to be told there was no blood available. And to make matters worse, some people would sell blood to desperate families like mine. We were spending approximately GH₵2,800 every week just to get the blood my mother needed,” he recounted.

Perez Musik then expressed gratitude to his former assistant, whose blood donor card enabled his family to access the vital blood during their time of need.

“Fortunately, my assistant at the time was a blood donor, and her donor card helped us get the blood my mother desperately needed,” he said.

He emphasized that the experience had taught him the critical importance of blood donation and its life-saving impact.

Perez Musik called on Ghanaians to cultivate the habit of donating blood to ensure that others don’t have to face the same challenges his family did.

“This is why I urge everyone to find it in their hearts to donate blood and help address the shortage in our hospitals. Let’s work together to ensure no family has to go through what mine did,” he passionately appealed.

Future NPP government will reinstate sacked workers

Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Nyarko Osei Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Nyarko Osei

The Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Nyarko Osei, has vowed that a future NPP government will reinstate public service workers dismissed by the John Mahama-led NDC administration.

In a Facebook post monitored by GhanaWeb, the legislator assured affected individuals that not only would they be reinstated, but they would also receive full compensation for the years spent out of work.

According to Mr Osei Nyarko, the dismissals were politically motivated and an attack on democratic principles. He emphasised that the NPP is committed to reversing what he described as the NDC’s “undemocratic and unconscionable behaviour.”

“We will correct these injustices when the NPP returns to power. We are keeping records of all termination letters to ensure justice is served,” he assured.

The Akim Swedru MP urged affected workers to remain patient, stressing that the NPP would ensure they receive fair treatment and the compensation they deserve.

The controversy stems from a directive by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, ordering the annulment of all public sector appointments made after 7 December 2024.

In a recent letter, the Chief of Staff argued that these appointments violated principles of good governance.

He stated that last-minute recruitments were inconsistent with the government’s official stance on end-of-tenure hiring practices.

“All appointments and recruitments made in the Public Services of Ghana after 7 December 2024 do not comply with established good governance practices,” excerpts of the letter revealed.

My US$70 million lithovit fertilizer supply was never used, left to rot

Businessman, Alhaji Seidu Agongo Businessman, Alhaji Seidu Agongo

Businessman, Alhaji Seidu Agongo, has revealed that US$70 million worth of lithovit liquid fertiliser, which he supplied to COCOBOD as a fourth delivery, was rejected and left to rot in a warehouse due to a change in government.

Speaking in an interview with UTV’s Agya Kwabena, Mr. Agongo recounted how COCOBOD had accepted and paid for the first three deliveries of the same fertiliser but refused to take the fourth consignment despite its proven effectiveness.

“I supplied lithovit liquid fertiliser to COCOBOD four times. They paid for the first three deliveries but rejected the fourth, leaving it to rot in the warehouse. The total value amounts to nearly US$70 million. I feel deeply pained whenever I think about it,” he said.

His legal troubles began soon after the change in government, as he became the subject of an eight-year-long court case.

The main complainant, Dr. Adu-Ampomah, alleged that the fertiliser was ineffective and claimed farmers were even drinking it as water.

However, Mr. Agongo insists these accusations were baseless and politically motivated.

“They conducted their own field investigations, and farmers confirmed that lithovit fertiliser was effective. They even used taxpayers’ money to travel to Germany to verify the efficacy of the agrochemical from my partner, yet they concealed that exculpatory evidence from the court,” he stated.

His trial, which spanned nearly a decade, was eventually withdrawn by new Attorney General Dominic Ayine.

Mr. Agongo expressed disappointment over the treatment of Ghanaian businesses, arguing that local entrepreneurs are often sidelined in favour of foreign firms.

“It is sad that when it comes to business, Ghanaians are discriminated against in favour of foreigners,” he lamented.

The businessman’s ordeal raises concerns about political interference in business contracts and its potential impact on investor confidence in Ghana’s economy.

Our playing fields don’t qualify as stadiums – Isaac Adongo

0

Isaac Adongo is the MP for Bolgatanga Isaac Adongo is the MP for Bolgatanga

Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga, Isaac Adongo, has delivered a scathing critique of Ghana’s sports infrastructure, highlighting the glaring inadequacies in stadium facilities and safety protocols.

His comments came during a parliamentary discussion on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, following concerns over safety at Ghana’s football venues.

The discussion was prompted by the tragic death of football fan Francis Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley, during a Ghana Premier League match between Nsoatreman and Asante Kotoko on Sunday, February 2, 2025.

Speaking in Parliament, Adongo dismissed claims that the country’s stadiums meet proper standards, instead referring to them as mere parks.

He urged the Club Licensing Board and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to enforce stricter regulations regarding stadium licensing.

“What we play football on are just parks; they don’t qualify to be called football stadiums. We must take stadium licensing seriously. When we do, places like Nsoatre will not be considered a stadium,” he stated.

Addressing the circumstances that led to Pooley’s death, Adongo emphasized how deeply football resonates with Ghanaians and called for an end to the persistent violence in the sport.

“Football is Ghana’s passion, but incidents like this happen far too often. There have been numerous cases where fans believe they can take the law into their own hands when they disagree. This must stop,” he added.

Pooley was fatally stabbed during Kotoko’s clash against Nsoatreman on Sunday, February 2, 2025. The incident occurred after an on-field altercation between players escalated into the stands, resulting in the tragic attack.

In response, the Ghana Police Service arrested at least six suspects, including the owner of Nsoatreman, Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, as investigations continue.

In a significant development, Asante Kotoko’s lawyer, Sarfo Duku, revealed that the Ghana Police Service has identified a man named Braimah as the individual who fatally stabbed Pooley.

However, he remains at large.

As Sudan’s army routs RSF from Khartoum, Sudanese reactions are mixed

0

Many Sudanese civilians are welcoming the army as a liberator as it advances across the capital, Khartoum, to topple the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

But activists on the ground say both sides are increasingly resorting to brutal tactics, which are exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

On February 1, the paramilitary fired artillery in a crowded market in Omdurman, killing at least 56 people.

A week later, the RSF detained two local relief workers as well as the manager of one of the last functioning hospitals in Khartoum, located in a historically marginalised “southern belt”, where ethnic minorities from Sudan’s peripheral regions predominantly live.

Al Jazeera was unable to verify the fate of the three people.

The army, meanwhile, is encountering stiffer resistance from the RSF in central Khartoum and in the sprawling Sharq el-Nile (East Nile) district. It reacted by imposing a partial siege on these city districts last week, activists on the ground told Al Jazeera.

“Right now, the city is besieged…and the only way out of it is heading west to Darfur, but this route is targeted by [army] drones and fighter jets,” said Augreis*, a local activist and humanitarian volunteer residing in east Khartoum.

“Many families have been killed trying to get out this way,” they told Al Jazeera.

Bittersweet return

Since April 2023, the RSF and army have been locked in a brutal conflict over control of the country.

The conflict has generated the “largest humanitarian crisis in the world”, with tens of thousands of people believed to be dead from armed violence and about 12.5 million uprooted from their homes.

Across the country, the RSF has confiscated people’s land and houses after expelling Indigenous communities and inhabitants.

In the wake of the army’s advances in Khartoum North and Omduman – two of three cities that make up the national capital region of Khartoum – thousands of RSF fighters abandoned homes they had occupied and fled to Darfur, their traditional stronghold.

Montasser*, a local activist and relief worker, told Al Jazeera many displaced people are gradually returning to their homes in Omdurman, jubilant that the army has kicked the RSF out.

He noted, however, that many remain displaced because their homes – and sometimes entire neighbourhoods – were significantly damaged or destroyed.

“Many people lost their homes and everything inside their homes was looted [by the RSF]. On top of that, there is no water or electricity in their neighbourhoods and they have no internet … the army in some cases still has to clear corpses from the streets,” said Montasser.

Some flee in fear of reprisals

Thousands of civilians have fled Khartoum in recent weeks out of fear that the army and its allied fighters will kill them, say activists on the ground.

The army reportedly targets local relief workers, medics and people who they perceive to be originally from western or southern Sudan, according to rights groups, activists and victims of the attacks.

Hundreds of thousands of people from western or southern tribes were born and raised in Khartoum after their parents fled devastating wars in South Sudan, the Nuba Mountains and Darfur during the 1990s and 2000s.

“The fear on many people’s faces is very obvious. They are very scared and they don’t feel entitled to [Khartoum],” Augreis, the relief worker in east Khartoum, said.

“Yes, they were born here, but they have the feeling that this place is not theirs. If you are from the north or the east [of Sudan], you feel more entitled to Khartoum right now,” Augreis told Al Jazeera.

She explained that many people quickly fled or prepared to flee Khartoum after they saw the army commit what she described as “massacres” and “ethnic cleansing” in Wad Madani, the capital of Gezira state, Sudan’s breadbasket.

When army-backed fighters captured the city last month, they systematically targeted the Kanabi – agricultural encampments that attract exploited labour from west and south Sudan.

Hundreds of people were killed based on suspicion they supported the RSF due to their ethnic origins, according to victims, local monitors and the army’s leadership, which blamed the acts of “individuals” for the violations.

According to the United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR), army-backed fighter groups have extrajudicially killed 18 people based on their perceived ethnic background while recapturing Khartoum North.

Army spokesperson, Nabil Abdullah, denies the allegations.

“These accusations are not correct,” he told Al Jazeera. “The Sudanese Armed Forces is completely committed to upholding the laws of Sudan, the laws of war and international resolutions.”

Raids and looting

Over the last three weeks, RSF fighters have looted major markets and raided homes to steal electronics, gold and cash before withdrawing from areas the army then recaptured.

With the army now threatening to enter Sharq el-Nile, the RSF is terrifying people in the district by raiding houses to confiscate money, gold and Starlink internet kits, which allows civilians to access the satellite internet when network service is unavailable.

Musab*, a local relief worker, said RSF fighters stormed his home on February 3 and assaulted all the men.

They confiscated cellphones and Starlink devices in an apparent attempt to hoard them, but Musab hid his just in time.

In addition, Musab says the RSF knows local relief workers receive money from abroad – either from the Sudanese diaspora or aid agencies – and are constantly trying to rob them.

“The RSF is looking for local relief workers because they know we are receiving some money. So they’re looking for us and trying to get access to our accounts,” he said.

Al Jazeera sent written questions to the RSF’s press office asking it to respond to accusations that it is looting and attacking civilians as the army advances.

No response was received from the press office by the time of publication.

Musab insists that the RSF’s abuses in Sharq el-Nile are becoming unbearable.

“Every day, I move from house to house. I can never stay in one place, so I can evade them,” he told Al Jazeera.

Many pundits hide behind criticism to insult Shatta Wale

Sammy Flex and Shatta Wale

Shatta Wale’s manager, Sammy Flex, has addressed the artiste’s frequent clashes with certain media personalities.

According to him, the dancehall musician’s reactions are often fuelled by insults from these media personalities.

Speaking in an interview on Onua TV, Sammy Flex explained that Shatta Wale, known for his outspoken nature, is unbothered by public discussions about him but takes issue with the tone and the disrespect it comes with.

Sammy Flex cited an example during the 2024 All-African Games tournament in Accra, where a pundit described Shatta Wale’s performance as resembling that of a “lost puppy.”

“That was not a review or critique, that was an insult to him. And he will reply. If it was a critique about timing or costume. That would have been ok, but when you say he was behaving like a lost puppy, he will clap back when he has the time,” he stated.

He also dismissed the notion that Shatta Wale has problems with the media, stating that the artiste’s issues are with just a few individuals within the media space.

“His problem is not with the media in general, he has no problems with the media, but with certain people within the media space. Even the people he’s had problems with are not up to five,” he added.

Okatakyie Hotel CEO and NPP ‘Big Man’ Allegedly Assaults Customer with Gun, Boasts of Political Protection

0

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Okatakyie Hotel in Takoradi has been accused of assaulting a customer and later bragging that he will not face any consequences due to his connections to prominent people in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly the Member of Parliament for the area.

Kojo Asante Anane, the Okatakyie Hotel CEO, allegedly assaulted a customer, identified as Daniel Pumi, while wielding a belt and a pump-action gun. The unprovoked assault left the victim bleeding from cuts he sustained as well as various other bodily injuries.

More injustice was to follow the assault as Mr. Anane swiftly proceeded to the police to report Daniel Pumi and got him jailed at the Takoradi Central Police Station on the back of concocted accusations. The move was to forestall Pumi getting him arrested for assault and to get the police on his side.

Despite his injured state, the Police went ahead to arrest the victim and jailed him until a friend posted his bail for Ghc 1,000.

The incident has shocked the city of Takoradi over such blatant disregard for human life and the abuse of power on display. Mr Anane, following the assault, is alleged to have boasted that no one can hold him accountable, citing his connections with the Takoradi police and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Effia, Honourable Yaw Boamah-Nyarko.

Rescind your decision to strike over Adom Botchway’s appointment

0

The government has called on the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) to reconsider its decision to go on strike, following the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway, Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama and Minister of State for Government Communications, made the appeal during a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday February 19.

“We believe that the president has acted correctly in the appointment of Mr. Adom Botchway, so we would appeal to CLOGSAG to rescind their decision to go on strike,” stated Kwakye Ofosu.

He acknowledged the importance of strike actions as a mechanism for workers to drive home their demands but emphasised that in this instance, there was no sufficient basis for such an action.

“A strike action, we appreciate. It is one of the mechanisms they can use to drive home their demands… But in this particular instance, we do not believe that an efficient basis exists to go on strike because it will be unfair to the people of Ghana who pay the wages of all public officers, including members of CLOGSAG,” he explained.

Mason jailed 3 years for causing damage to $35,900 vehicle

0

The Amasaman Circuit Court has sentenced a mason to three years imprisonment in hard labour for causing irreparable damage to a Donfeng Ex-Box car, valued at US$35,900, belonging to Hisense Company Limited.

Senyo Awuku, 32, admitted causing unlawful damage to the vehicle and was sentenced accordingly.

However, he denied entering unlawfully into the house of Mr Gad Ebenezer Afranie Kisi, the complainant, to steal the vehicle, as well as an HP laptop computer, valued at GH₵4,300.00, and cash amount of GH₵4,000.00.

He was ordered by the court, presided over by Ms Enid Marful-Sau, to be brought back on March 13, 2025, to face the other two charges: unlawful entry and stealing.

Police Chief Inspector Salifu Nashiru, briefing the court, said the complainant, who works at the Customer Service of Hisence Company Ltd, lived at Danchira Ocloo Farms, whereas Awuku was a mason living at Hobor, a suburb of Accra.

He said on January 30, 2025, the complainant returned home from work and parked his official car, a Donfeng Ex-Box car with registration number GT 4955-24 in his house.

Chief Inspector Salifu said the complainant also put his laptop, the GHC4,000.00 and the car key on top of his table in his room and slept.

The next day, at about 0500 hours, the complainant woke up to realise that the items mentioned had been stolen and reported the case to the Danchira Police.

He later put the said car’s pictures on social media informing the public that his car had been stolen.

In the afternoon of February 1, 2025, the complainant received a phone call from a friend that he had seen the car around Amasaman- Three Junction.

Upon receipt of the information, the complainant proceeded to the place and Awuku, then in charge of the vehicle, sped off upon seeing the complainant.

Prosecution said Awuku was given a hot chase, and he drove the car into a container at Ademan, damaging it.

He came out of the vehicle and took to his heels and with the help of onlookers around, he was arrested and handed over to the Danchira police.

After investigation, the convict was charged and put before court.

Awuku in pleading for mitigation asked for forgiveness and said he regretted his action.

Prosecution prayed the court to consider the fact that the vehicle had been damaged beyond repairs.

In passing judgement, the court considered both the mitigation factor, and the extent of damage caused to the car.

It ordered the release of the stolen items: vehicle and laptop computer.

Births and Deaths Registrar: CLOGSAG must provide legal basis for removal

0

Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu

Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has questioned the legal basis of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG)’s demand for the removal of the Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry, Samuel Adom Botchway.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, he stated that the association had not provided a legal justification for its request.

“For quite some time, CLOGSAG has been engaging the government and insisting that the Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry should be removed and replaced by a civil servant. However, despite their demands, they have not been able to indicate the legal basis for this position. The government has enormous respect for organized labor, including CLOGSAG, and remains committed to engaging in dialogue to find amicable solutions to any impasse or dispute that may arise,” he noted.

Kwakye Ofosu emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of Ghanaian workers, citing ongoing negotiations for a new minimum wage and base pay.

“We are also very much committed to enhancing the welfare of Ghanaian workers. Indeed, I have just come from the Minister of Finance, and I am aware that negotiations are ongoing to determine the minimum wage and base pay. This is a testament to the government’s commitment to ensuring that Ghanaian workers have decent working conditions,” he stated.

He further explained that the law does not stipulate that the Registrar must be a civil servant.

Instead, it requires that the appointee possess the relevant qualifications, experience, and knowledge in civil registration.

“The government has not questioned the competence of the current Registrar. The only concern raised by CLOGSAG is that he is politically exposed. However, there is no legal requirement that the position be reserved exclusively for civil servants,” he added.

He urged CLOGSAG to reconsider its planned industrial action, stating that unless the law is amended or a court ruling invalidates the appointment process, the government sees no basis for Samuel Botchway’s removal.

“We appreciate that a strike is one of the mechanisms through which labor unions can press their demands. However, in this instance, we do not believe there is sufficient justification for such an action. It would be unfair to the people of Ghana, who pay the wages of all public officials, including members of CLOGSAG, for them to go on strike based on a claim that lacks legal backing,” he said.

Meanwhile, CLOGSAG has called on its members to prepare for a nationwide strike on Thursday, February 20, 2025.

The planned action is in protest against Samuel Botchway’s continued tenure, despite what they claim were government assurances that he would be removed.

In a statement signed by Executive Secretary Isaac Bampoe Addo on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, CLOGSAG reaffirmed its stance, citing Botchway’s participation in a budget hearing at the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development on Monday, February 17, 2025, as evidence that he remains in office.

According to CLOGSAG, the strike will proceed as scheduled unless their concerns are addressed.

Savannah Women Farmers Association holds Regional Business Forum in Tamale

By Solomon Gumah

Tamale, Feb 19, GNA – Representatives of the Savannah Women Farmers Association in the Northern Region have participated in a day’s forum to expose them to some business opportunities in the agribusiness sector to leverage on them to improve their livelihoods.

As part of the forum held in Tamale, resource persons from Government agencies, financial institutions and buyers, took participants through ways to access funding and other opportunities at the various institutions to enhance the operations of their businesses.

The forum was organized by the Association and formed part of the implementation of the Restoration Project, under the Ghana Federation of Forest and Farm Producers (GhaFFaP) with funding support from the Food and Agriculture Organization.

Participants for the forum were selected leaders of the association, drawn from 23 communities in the five operational districts of the association, namely Savelugu, Kumbungu, Nanton, Mion and Tolon.

Mr Oseni Kabiru, Programme Coordinator of the Savannah Women Farmers Association, during the forum, said it was intended to enhance the understanding of members of the association on the procedures and processes required to access services at various departments and agencies in the region.

He indicated that it was a further platform for stakeholders at the institutions to educate members on some of the available opportunities that the association members could take advantage of to enhance their operations.

Mr Matthew Angbanyere, Nanton District Director of Agriculture, Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA ), underscored need for the women to prioritise formation of registered groups and associations to enable them access support from MOFA and other NGOs.

He explained that the formation of such groups would also enable the few Technical Officers in the districts to effectively disseminate information on available technologies and services to enhance their activities.

Mr Angbanyere said, “Unfortunately most of the communities do not see the importance of the associations, until there is an opportunity for them to benefit. At that stage it makes it difficult for us to support them, because we prioritise supporting groups than individuals.”

Madam Mumuni Wedad, MOFA Officer in charge of Women in Agriculture Development in the Savelugu Municipality, urged women not to shy away from programmes and other agribusiness related initiatives in their communities to ensure sustainable development.

Madam Bridgette Sheini, Head, Kumbungu District Business Advisory Centre of the Ghana Enterprises Agency, encouraged participants to take advantage of the business counselling and the digitisation skills training initiatives at the district to enhance their operations.

Rapper A$AP Rocky found not guilty in gun assault case

0

A$AP Rocky dove into the arms of Rihanna Tuesday as a clerk read the not-guilty verdict at his trial on two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm.

The Los Angeles courtroom, full of fans of the hip-hop performer and his singing superstar partner, exploded into screaming glee as Rocky leaped from the defense table into the gallery, where Rihanna sat between his mother and sister. They embraced and sobbed.

After a three-week trial, the jury deliberated for just three hours to reach the verdict that spared Rocky, whose legal name is Rakim Mayers, a prison sentence that could have run more than two decades.

“Thank y’all for saving my life,” he told the jurors as they left.

Amid the chaos, it took the clerk a while to read the second not-guilty verdict, though it was very unlikely the jury would split on the counts.

“Mr. Mayers, you’re excused,” Judge Mark Arnold said.

On the eve of trial, Rocky turned down a prosecution offer of just six months in jail, along with probation and other conditions, if he would plead guilty to one count.

Insisting on his innocence, Rocky decided to gamble that a jury would feel the same. It paid off. The jurors felt at least that there was reasonable doubt of his guilt.

Rihanna hugged the defense lawyers, as did Rocky. She attended the trial sporadically and brought the couple’s two sons — 2-year-old RZA Athelston Mayers and 1-year-old Riot Rose Mayers — for some of the closing arguments.

The couple had to fight through a crush of photographers, reporters, YouTubers and fans to get into a waiting SUV outside the courthouse after the verdict.

“This whole experience has been crazy for the past 4 years,’ Rocky said amid the mob scene. ”I’m thankful and it’s blessed to be here right now to be a free man talking to y’all.”

District Attorney Nathan Hochman said he respected the jury’s decision.

“Our office remains committed to seeking accountability for those who break the law, no matter their status or influence,” Hochman said in a statement. “Fame does not place anyone above the law, and we will not waver in our pursuit of justice for victims and the community.”

The verdict came at the height of Rocky’s fame, if not the pinnacle of his music career. The three-time Grammy nominee, fashion mogul and actor has a banner year in the works, and can now look to it without the threat of prison hanging over him.

He is scheduled to headline the Rolling Loud music festival in March; he is one of the celebrity co-chairs of fashion’s biggest night, the Met Gala, in May; and he stars with Denzel Washington in director Spike Lee’s film “Highest 2 Lowest,” set for release in early summer.

Prosecutors and their witnesses said that he was beefing with a former friend, A$AP Relli, with whom he had been in a crew who called themselves the A$AP Mob since high school. They said the two men met up in Hollywood on Nov. 6, 2021, and after a scuffle, Rocky pulled the gun and fired twice at Relli, who said one of the shots grazed his knuckle but was not seriously hurt.

“They saw through this mirage of a case,” Tacopina said. “He turned down a plea for almost no jail time because he was innocent.”

In his closing argument, Deputy District Attorney John Lewin urged the jurors not to be influenced by the celebrity or family aspects of the case and suggested Rihanna bringing the kids to closing arguments was an attempt to manipulate the jury.

“You are not allowed to consider how this might affect Rihanna and his kids,” the prosecutor said. “We are all responsible for our own actions in the world.”

After the verdict, Tacopina said outside the courthouse that “Rocky did not want her here, I will tell you that.”

He said Rocky “wanted to shield her from this. Wild horses couldn’t keep her away.”

Rocky was more than 30 minutes late for the reading of the verdict, and looked shaken and tense as he waited for it.

“There was a moment when before we heard the words from the clerk, he didn’t know if he was going to be spending the next two decades in jail or going home,” Tacopina said.

Then came the explosion of the emotion, and the leap into the crowd.

“I didn’t know how athletic he was,” Tacopina said. “That was raw emotion, you guys got to see that. Even for us it was insane.”

Koforidua High Court issues bench warrant for the arrest of Akwatia MP

Member of Parliament of Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi Member of Parliament of Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi

A Koforidua High Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament (MP) of Akwatia in the Eastern Region, after convicting him of contempt of court.

According to multiple reports, the bench warrant was issued after Kumi failed to appear in court.

The MP had disobeyed an interim injunction issued against him on January 7, 2025, which barred him from being sworn in and admitted as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Akwatia constituency due to an ongoing legal battle over his election.

However, despite the court order, Kumi presented himself in Parliament and was sworn in on January 7, 2025.

Presiding Judge Justice Senyo Amedahe ruled that the convict had consistently failed to appear in court throughout the hearing of the contempt case.

He also dismissed a letter from the Minority caucus, which claimed that the MP was occupied with parliamentary duties and, therefore, could not attend court sessions.

The judge rejected the letter, stating that accepting it would contradict his own ruling.

He indicated that the rejection of monetary incentives and the demands for money before voting were signs of how the people of Ghana were unhappy with the NPP government led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“I was giving people money to go and vote… Nana, to my surprise, for the first time in my history, a voter rejected the GH¢50 I was giving her to go and vote. The voter said, ‘I am not going to take the money because I would not vote for you.’ She did not take the money and did not go and vote.

“… People said they were not going to vote. Some said they wanted money before going to vote. Others said they were not going to take the money because they would not vote. This was where the issues had gotten to,” he said.

He added, “A villager whom I gave GH¢50 said that she was not going to take it because she would not vote. She was an elderly woman.”

The former Ayensuano MP pointed out that the actions of Ghanaians during the 2024 election must serve as a lesson to his party when they return to power again.

No one should call me about Okomfour Kwadee’s health issue – Ohemaa Woyeje

Media personality Ohemaa Woyeje has distanced herself from news regarding hiplife musician Okomfour Kwadee after pledging to support the musician a few weeks ago.

In a discussion on United Showbiz, Ohemaa Woyeje detailed her reasons for distancing herself from the musician.

She explained that during a live television appearance, Okomfour Kwadee’s mother made a statement, saying that people should call her (Ohemaa Woyeje) if they want information about the musician.

According to Ohemaa Woyeje, she is not ready to take the position of Hammar Nti, who has been taking care of the musician over the years.

“Kwadee’s issue isn’t a difficult one if he is taken care of… When you spoke with Kwadee’s mother the last time, she mentioned my name, saying that if people want information about Kwadee, they should call me, and it didn’t sit well with Hammar. Because Hammar is the one who has officially been taking care of him, I am not ready to take the position of anybody.

“After your interview with his mother, I sent Hammar a text message that I had something to discuss with him, and he told me if it was about Kwadee, I shouldn’t bother because the mother had already said that if people want information and also want to contribute, they should get in touch with me,” she said.

Ohemaa Woyeje added that she wanted to personally contribute financially to Kwadee’s health and has no intention of soliciting funds from the public, as has been perceived.

“I haven’t taken anybody’s money. I am the one who even wanted to contribute. But they are making it look like I am appealing for support for the musician,” She stated.

She continued, “He has taken offence, and I don’t even know what I did. He has even sent a letter to Angel FM demanding an apology, claiming I said he doesn’t need anybody’s financial support. So, anything about Kwadee, nobody should call me. Deal with Hammar or his mother so that we can keep the respect.”
