Blinding Lights makes history with five billion streams on Spotify

0

The Weeknd has just made streaming history. His 2020 hit “Blinding Lights” is now the first song in Spotify’s history to reach five billion streams, setting a new benchmark for global music success.

Spotify announced the milestone on Sunday (August 31), and the Canadian star, real name Abel Tesfaye, quickly celebrated the news with his 78 million Instagram followers.

The record-breaking feat adds to the song’s long list of accolades.

Released in November 2019 as the second single from his album After Hours, “Blinding Lights” spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the first track to stay in the chart’s top 10 for a full year. It was also named Billboard’s Greatest of All Time Hot 100 song in 2021.

This new milestone follows another recent honour, the track was ranked No. 1 on Billboard’s “Top Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs of the 21st Century” list, which charts songs from 2000 to 2024.

The Weeknd previously said that when the song hit four billion streams in January 2024, “I’ll never stop being humbled by anything I create, making its way to millions of people, let alone billions. I’m so thankful this song makes people feel something that keeps them coming back.”

“Blinding Lights” is now one of 28 songs by The Weeknd in Spotify’s Billions Club, the most for any artist, further cementing his status as one of the most-streamed musicians of the decade.

Ghana Football Association Hit by Sad News as Rumors Spread About Stephen Appiah’s Death

0

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and football fans across the nation were thrown into shock on Tuesday after unverified reports claimed that former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah had passed away. The news spread quickly across social media platforms, leaving many Ghanaians confused and anxious.

According to the viral claims, Appiah, who remains one of Ghana’s most celebrated footballers, was allegedly pronounced dead, with some posts even carrying condolence messages. The rumors intensified after a series of cryptic messages began circulating in WhatsApp groups, sparking fears among his fans.

However, as of press time, no official confirmation has been made by the Ghana Football Association, Appiah’s family, or any credible news outlet. Close associates of the football icon have also remained silent, leaving the public to speculate on the accuracy of the reports.

Stephen Appiah, fondly called the “Tornado,” is a national hero who captained Ghana’s senior national team during its historic first FIFA World Cup appearance in 2006. He is widely respected for his leadership on and off the pitch, as well as his continued involvement in developing Ghanaian football.

The rumor of his alleged death has triggered a wave of emotional reactions. Many fans took to Twitter and Facebook to express grief, with others calling for calm until credible information is released. “If this is true, it will be a huge blow to Ghana football. But we must wait for official confirmation,” one user wrote.

Analysts warn that such unverified reports can cause unnecessary panic and emotional distress, especially given Appiah’s legendary status. They have urged the public to exercise caution and rely only on official sources for updates.

For now, the supposed “death” of Stephen Appiah remains unconfirmed. GFA insiders have hinted that a formal statement may be issued soon to clarify the situation.

As Ghana waits anxiously, fans continue to pray that the reports turn out to be false, hoping to see Stephen Appiah remain alive and strong as an icon of Ghanaian football.

MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett Takes Helm as Chair of Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications

0

The appointments were made at the 14th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Chamber earlier this month, where members reviewed the industry’s progress and challenges.

Stephen Blewett, CEO of MTN Ghana , has been elected as the new Chairperson of the Governing Council of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications  for the 2025/2026 fiscal year. This marks a significant leadership transition, with the immediate past Chairperson, Patricia Obo-Nai, CEO of Telecel Ghana, stepping into the role of Vice-Chairperson.

The appointments were made at the 14th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Chamber earlier this month, where members reviewed the industry’s progress and challenges. Blewett’s one-year tenure as Chairperson will focus on steering the Chamber through a period of rapid digital transformation and regulatory evolution, with an emphasis on fostering collaboration among stakeholders to address pressing issues and drive sustainable growth.

The leadership renewal comes amid a host of challenges facing Ghana’s telecommunications sector, including theft of active infrastructure, vandalism at cell sites, destruction of fibre optic cables, high taxation, a hike in fees and cybersecurity threats.

In his acceptance address at the AGM, Mr. Blewett thanked the outgoing Chairperson for the outstanding work done. He also highlighted the need for unified action to ensure the industry’s resilience.

“The telecommunications sector is the backbone of Ghana’s digital economy, but the challenges we face demand collective ingenuity and partnership. We must bind together to surmount these obstacles and ensure sustained growth”

-Stephen Blewett, CEO, MTN Ghana, Chairperson of the Governing Council of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications

As Chairperson, Mr. Blewett is expected to lead advocacy efforts in collaboration with the CEO of the Chamber, on key policy matters, enhance industry-government relations, and promote innovation in areas like digital inclusion and cybersecurity. His role will involve chairing bi-monthly Governing Council meetings, overseeing strategic initiatives, and representing the Chamber in national and international forums. With his extensive experience at MTN Ghana, Mr. Blewett is poised to drive initiatives that mitigate infrastructure vulnerabilities and support economic development.

Madame Patricia Obo-Nai, now Vice-Chairperson, expressed optimism about the new leadership.

“It’s been a difficult time over the past couple of years due to severalchallenges, but we’ve stood strong. The times ahead require us to work collectively, and I’m confident Stephen’s vision will guide us forward.”

– Madame Patricia Obo-Nai, Vice-Chairperson, Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications

The AGM also saw the adoption of the Chamber’s 2024 Financial Statement and authorization for the Governing Council to set auditor remuneration. The Governing Council, which serves as the Chamber’s board of directors, includes heads of member organizations and the CEO.

Margins ID Group’s commitment makes Ghana Card a global model – NIA Chairman

0

Chairman of the newly constituted Board of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Moses Afetsi Positive, has praised the expertise and commitment of Margins ID Group, the company whose subsidiary, Intelligent Card Production Systems (ICPS), conceptualised, designed, and produced the Ghana Card.

He said the company’s work has been central to the establishment of Ghana’s robust National Identification System, which has become a cornerstone of governance and national development.

Speaking during a stakeholder engagement with Margins ID Group, Mr. Positive described the company’s performance as a testament to Ghana’s ability to meet global standards, while stressing the importance of discipline and responsibility in sustaining such achievements.

He was particularly impressed by the various ISO certifications the company has attained — global benchmarks for quality, safety, and sustainability — but expressed fears about possible unethical human conduct by NIA staff using the system built by Margins.

“ISO certifications tell you what to do, but the human factor is something you always have to work with. ISO will help and give you the structures, but people — I know — will always find a way out,” Mr. Positive noted, underscoring the need to combine internationally recognised standards with ethical human behaviour.

Stakeholder meeting to strengthen collaboration

The NIA Board and Margins ID Group convened to review the Ghana Card project and explore strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s digital identity system.
The meeting marked one of the Board’s first official engagements since its inauguration and reflects a renewed focus on consolidating the Ghana Card project as the backbone of service delivery, economic transactions, and governance in Ghana.

The company had earlier engaged the NIA Board during internal deliberations, but this was the first official visit.
Margins ID Group, through its subsidiary ICPS, reaffirmed its commitment to providing secure, scalable, and innovative identity solutions that align with Ghana’s development agenda.

A tour of Africa’s largest secure card facility
As part of the engagement, the Board toured Margins ID Group’s headquarters and ICPS facility in Accra.
ICPS operates the largest secure card production facility in Sub-Saharan Africa, with stringent compliance frameworks and security protocols designed to protect the integrity of Ghana’s national identification system.

The visit, led by Margins ID Group CEO Moses Baiden and the Group’s Executive Directors, offered the NIA Board a firsthand view of the entire Ghana Card production process — from software development to card issuance.
Board members were also briefed on the global certifications and cybersecurity standards that govern the facility’s operations.

Advanced technology with built-in accountability
Explaining the advanced safeguards embedded in the Ghana Card production process, Mr. Baiden said the printers designed for the project include self-auditing features that guarantee accountability at every stage.
“The printers that we designed for you are self-auditable, so you know where each card goes to and who issues the card,” he revealed.
According to him, this feature not only enhances traceability but also significantly reduces the risks of fraud, ensuring that every Ghana Card can be tracked from production to distribution.

Globally certified standards

ICPS holds multiple international certifications, including ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management, PCI CP (Payment Card Industry Card Production & Provisioning), and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 for Information Security Management Systems.
Margins ID Group itself has also secured several global accreditations, including ISO/IEC 27

001:2022, ISO 22301:2019, ISO 20000:2018, alongside Cybersecurity Establishment and Cybersecurity Service Provider certifications. These accreditations position the company as a global leader in secure identity solutions.

A decade of strategic partnership with NIA

Margins ID Group has been working with the NIA for over a decade to register Ghanaian citizens at home, citizens abroad, and foreign nationals who have resided in the country for more than three months.

This partnership has turned the Ghana Card into an indispensable requirement for banking, telecommunications, healthcare, and access to government services, firmly embedding it within Ghana’s digital economy.

Beyond ICPS, Margins ID Group operates other subsidiaries including Margins ID Systems Applications (MIDSA), Identity Management Systems (IMS), and Identity Management Systems II.

Together, these companies bring expertise in biometric software development, identity management, and secure card production — capabilities that have been critical to the success of the Ghana Card project.

Securing Ghana’s digital future
The engagement demonstrated the NIA Board’s determination to deepen collaboration with its technical partners, strengthen Ghana’s national identity system, and enhance public confidence in the Ghana Card.

It also underscored Margins ID Group’s ongoing commitment to delivering secure, globally certified identity solutions that protect national systems while driving Ghana’s digital and economic transformation.

With the Ghana Card now serving as the foundation for banking, healthcare, telecom services, and e-governance, the strengthened partnership between NIA and Margins ID Group promises to further entrench the card as the key enabler of Ghana’s digital future.

Ghana’s self-proclaimed “Amapiano King,” DJ Azonto, is making headlines again after throwing lyrical shots at top stars Shatta Wale, Sarkodie and media personality Serwaa Amihere in his latest track Attassa (Nyame Bɛyɛ).

The multiple award-winning artiste, has also issued a stern warning to fellow musicians, particularly Sarkodie, over the use of his newly coined slogan, “Attassa.”

It may be recalled that DJ Azonto cautioned in a recent interview that “Attassa” is his intellectual property, just like his other popular catchphrases, including Fa No Fom, Ala Woyo, Azonto A Confirmie and Make Dem Tell You.

DJ Azonto warns Sarkodie, others over ‘Attassa’ slogan

“I had a dream that Sarkodie had used my term ‘Attassa’ in his song, and I want to publicly state that any unauthorized usage by King Sark will lead to a $500 billion investment into my DJ Azonto Microfinance, with two sureties attached,” he warned.

DJ Azonto added that he is prepared to take legal action against any artiste who attempts to exploit the term for attention or hype.

“I know some artists will intentionally use the term for hype, but I am ready to take any artist who steals this term to court,” he declared.

The Fa No Fom hitmaker, who recently dropped Check N See (Fully Active), emphasised the importance of protecting creative ideas and branding in Ghana’s competitive music industry.

All five presidential hopefuls breached party laws – NPP UK Chair

0

Kingsley Adumattah Agyapong is the Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) UK Chapter Kingsley Adumattah Agyapong is the Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) UK Chapter

The Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) UK Chapter, Kingsley Adumattah Agyapong, popularly known as Wofa K, has publicly criticized the party’s national leadership, accusing them of violating established guidelines for the presidential primary election.

In a recent interview on Rainbow Radio, Agyapong argued that the party should not have accepted filing fees from aspiring candidates before they had successfully passed the vetting process.

He maintained that the proper procedure outlined in the party’s constitution is for interested individuals to pick up and file their forms, undergo vetting and only then, if deemed qualified, proceed to pay the filing fee.

Wofa K expressed concern that the party has become too lenient in enforcing its internal discipline and adherence to its own laws, effectively bypassing laid-down procedures.

He emphasised the need for stringent processes during internal elections to prevent unqualified candidates from contesting.

“We have become so flexible that we are bypassing some guidelines. We need strong rules to lock some people out of the process,” he said.

“Those who have breached the party’s laws or crossed certain boundaries ought to be suspended immediately and prevented from contesting. But due to fear, some of our leaders cannot tell us the truth. There may be some unqualified people who should not even contest but because of this fear, they are being allowed to go through.”

He further claimed that all five aspiring candidates who have filed to contest the presidential primary have, in his view, already violated the party’s laws.

“All the five aspirants have failed and because the national leadership is weak and cannot chastise them, they continue to breach the laws of the party,” he asserted.

Addressing the aspirants directly, Agyapong urged them to be more circumspect and to desist from “needless attacks and insults,” warning that such conduct could damage the party’s chances in the 2028 elections.

He stressed the importance of unity, stating that all members must rally behind the elected flagbearer after the primary to secure victory in 2028.

“At the point we are today, that is not the final point. Any of the five who wins will need the support of the others to secure victory in 2028. The insults and attacks are needless and so they should be guided.

“Let’s unite as a party so that after the primary, we don’t have damages to deal with,” he concluded.

Kofi Kinaata Drops A Big News, Says He Was On The Flight

0

Ghanaian musician Kofi Kinaata has spoken out regarding a recent helicopter crash that has shocked many, revealing that he had previously flown on the same aircraft twice earlier this year.

The highlife and hiplife artist shared his thoughts with a mix of relief and reflection, acknowledging how close to home the incident hit, considering his own past experience on that very flight.

In recounting his personal connection to the helicopter, Kinaata explained that he had used it for travel on two separate occasions in 2025.

Though he didn’t disclose the exact dates or destinations of those flights, he expressed deep gratitude for having arrived safely on both trips.

The incident has clearly left a lasting impression on him, especially given how familiar he is with the aircraft involved.

He emphasized how unpredictable life can be and how such close calls serve as a reminder to cherish every moment.

While he did not reveal whether the crash resulted in any casualties or injuries, the emotional tone of his statement conveyed the gravity of the situation.

Kinaata also extended his sympathies to those affected by the accident, noting that the aviation industry, while generally safe, is not without its risks.

The singer’s revelation has sparked reactions from fans and the public alike, many of whom were unaware that he had been using helicopters for travel.

Some expressed their concern, while others shared words of encouragement and thanked him for opening up about such a personal and potentially traumatic experience.

Kofi Kinaata’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the thin line between routine travel and unforeseen tragedy, and his reflections have added a human touch to what could have otherwise been just another news headline.

Water User Committees trained on water facilities management

ActionAid Ghana was implementing three output areas under the CAP component ActionAid Ghana was implementing three output areas under the CAP component

ActionAid Ghana, a social justice Non-governmental Organisation, has facilitated the training of nine Water User Committees (WUCs) from nine communities in the Upper West Region to promote the sustainable management of water facilities.

A total of 45 people constituting the nine committees from three districts in the region, participated in the training based on priority needs outlined in their Community Action Plans (CAPs).

The initiative formed part of the CAP component of the Resilience Against Climate Change (REACH) project under the European Union Ghana Agricultural Programme (EUGAP), implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).

Speaking at the opening of the training in Wa, Madam Abiba Nibaradun, the Upper West Regional Manager of ActionAid Ghana (AAG), emphasised the need for WUCs to manage the facilities properly to ensure they reached their intended lifespan.

The training held in Wa, brought together representatives from the nine communities in the Wa Municipality, Wa West and Wa East districts.

It covered topics including the roles and responsibilities of WUCs, operation and maintenance of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities, financial management and record keeping, sanitation promotion, conflict resolution in water use, tariff setting, and monitoring and reporting.

Similar trainings were organised for other clusters of communities benefiting from the project with a total of 300 members of 60 committees representing 60 communities in nine districts – eight districts in the Upper West and one in the savannah regions – expected to be trained.

“Caring for the water facilities is very important because it will ensure sustainability of the facilities, extend their lifespan for the communities to benefit, and for the benefit of generations to come.

“When we are talking about caring for the facilities, we are talking about proper maintenance and cleanliness of the facilities,” she explained.

Cletus B. Bapuogyang, the Extension Service Specialist at the Upper West Regional Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), who facilitated the training, urged the participants to take borehole maintenance seriously by ensuring regular inspection of the facilities.

He advised WUCs to prioritise preventive maintenance to avoid breakdowns, respond promptly to faults, leakages and blockages, and seek the services of trained “area mechanics” for major repairs.

Some participants who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the training, described it as impactful, and said they had acquired knowledge to maintain their boreholes.

They added that in the past, a lack of technical know-how had led to poor management of water facilities in their communities, which shortened the facilities’ lifespan.

brahim Daubile, the Assembly Member for Jonga Electoral Area, urged communities to work closely with individuals or organisations that provided water facilities to ensure water quality was not compromised under the guise of charity.

ActionAid Ghana was implementing three output areas under the CAP component of the EUGAP REACH project – Sustainable Water Management, Forest Restoration and Agro-forestry, and Improved Soil Health, including conservation agriculture.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed the Alejandro Garnacho transfer deal is done, and made it clear he sees the Argentine as a winger.

African leaders urged to invest in youth-led innovations

0

Co-founder and CEO of Ghanaian startup Kodu Technology, Dr. Iddi Mohammed Faried, is urging African leaders to increase investment in youth-led innovations as a strategy to drive the growth of Africa’s agribusiness sector.

Speaking at the 2025 Africa Food Systems Forum (AFSF) in Dakar, Senegal, he said: “We need investment in youth-led solutions, with finance, mentorship, and opportunities for growth.

“We need practical education that goes beyond theory to include innovation labs, apprenticeships, and entrepreneurship pathways.”

“And we need to be included in policy discussions, not as tokens, but as real actors shaping the future of food systems. If Africa is serious about food security and resilience, it must be serious about its youth,” he added.

AFSF, an annual event organised by AGRA, is Africa’s premier platform for dialogue and action on food systems transformation.

Under the theme “Africa’s Youth Leading Collaboration, Innovation, and Implementation of Agri-Food Systems Transformation,” this year’s forum will bring together heads of state, policymakers, researchers, agribusiness leaders, investors, and youth entrepreneurs to shape the future of food on the African continent.

Over 6,000 attendees from more than 113 countries will drive high-level discussions and commitments on agriculture between the 31st of August and the 5th of September 2025.

Speaking at an event that spotlighted youth’s role in Africa’s food systems transformation, Dr. Faried noted that: “Transforming Africa’s food systems is not only about growing more crops.”

“It is about rethinking resources, linking agriculture to human needs and encouraging young people to turn challenges into opportunities,” he said.

The firm Dr. Faried co-founded, Kodu Technology, is a socially driven startup that is turning discarded banana and plantain waste into affordable, eco-friendly sanitary pads to help restore dignity to young women while boosting incomes for smallholder farmers.

Dr. Faried explained he and his team were inspired to start the venture after they engaged some young women in the Northern Region who disclosed they sometimes missed school because they had no resources to purchase sanitary pads.

He said Kodu Technology’s pad is fully certified by the Ghana Standards Authority and the Food and Drug Authority.

Dr. Faried told the audience that Africa’s innovative youth have a different view of what challenges are.

“Africa has the youngest population in the world, with more than 60 per cent under 25. We see problems differently. To us, waste is not waste, it is raw material for innovation,” he said.

“Across the continent, young people are already creating apps to connect farmers to markets, processing crops into higher-value products, advancing climate-smart farming and repurposing waste into products,” he added.

“Let us stop asking if young people are ready. We are already proving it every day. The question is, are we ready to be supported, trusted, and given the space to transform Africa’s food systems?” Dr. Faried concluded.

Director of Agrifood Systems at the Mastercard Foundation, Ms. Wambui Chege, who also spoke at the event, said Africa’s future will be forged by the relentless actions of young people.

“Each year, 10 million young people step into the work force… It is an extraordinary opportunity… Agriculture holds powerful pathways to scalable entrepreneurship,” she said.

“We have heard what Dr. Iddi is doing and rewriting the story of Africa’s food systems. They are creating jobs and reshaping value chains. They are proving that young people are not waiting for change. They are leading it,” she added.

Senegal’s Minister for Agriculture and Livestock, Mabouba Diagne, told the session that numerous opportunities exist for Africa’s young people and urged them to seize such chances.

He emphasised that with the right mindset, skills, and support, youth can become the driving force behind the continent’s agricultural growth.

Former NPP MP calls for ethics probe into Akwatia candidate

0

Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi

A former New Patriotic Party legislator has demanded the Ghana Bar Association investigate what he describes as professional misconduct by a lawyer seeking the National Democratic Congress nomination for the upcoming Akwatia by-election.

Dickson Adomako Kissi, who represented Anyaa Sowutuom in Parliament, accused Bernard Bediako Baidoo of breaching legal ethics after the lawyer successfully challenged the NDC’s 2024 parliamentary candidate Henry Yiadom Boakye in court, then positioned himself as a replacement candidate for the same seat.

The controversy centers on Baidoo’s dual role as legal representative and political rival. Court records show he represented interests that led to Boakye’s disqualification, creating what Adomako Kissi characterizes as a fundamental conflict of professional duty.

“These are serious breaches of trust that cannot be ignored,” Adomako Kissi said during a recent public statement. He questioned how legal practitioners can maintain public confidence while appearing to manipulate client relationships for political gain.

The accusations add another layer of complexity to what was already shaping up as a contentious electoral contest. The September 2 by-election was necessitated by the death of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the NPP incumbent who had held the Akwatia seat.

Political observers note the timing raises questions about the intersection of legal practice and electoral ambitions in Ghana’s democratic process. The case could set precedents for how the legal profession polices conflicts between advocacy and personal political interests.

Adomako Kissi also called for enhanced security measures during the by-election campaign period, citing the heated nature of the contest and potential for tensions to escalate.

The Ghana Bar Association has not yet responded to the call for investigation. Meanwhile, both major parties are intensifying their campaigns in what many view as a crucial test ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Ghana Prisons Service Denies Social Media Claims About Agradaa

0

The Ghana Prisons Service has dismissed rumors spreading on social media about Nana Agradaa, also known as Madam Patricia Asiedu, who is currently serving her sentence at the Nsawam Female Prison.

In a statement issued on 30th August 2025 and signed by Janet Asabea, Deputy Director of Prisons and Director of Public Affairs, the Service described the claims as false and misleading.

According to the release, certain social media handles, particularly Mystery Me on Facebook and Team Empress Gifty on TikTok, have been circulating fake stories about Agradaa.

These accounts, the Service explained, are only using Agradaa’s name and situation to attract followers by posting sensational and unverified content under the caption “Breaking News from Nsawam.”

The false information claims that Agradaa cries every morning, regrets her actions, and constantly says she has “messed up big time.” It further alleges that she has a swollen leg but refuses to seek medical care at the prison hospital, insisting instead that only her family doctor should attend to her.

The Ghana Prisons Service strongly denied all these reports, stating clearly that any news about Agradaa circulating on social media is fake and should not be trusted. The Service reassured the public that Agradaa, like all other inmates, is being kept under safe custody and receives the necessary care and attention required.

The statement also reminded the public of the Service’s main duties, which include ensuring safe custody, reformation, and rehabilitation of inmates so that they can become law-abiding citizens after their release. The Prisons Service urged Ghanaians to ignore social media rumors and rely only on official communication channels for accurate information.

This comes weeks after Nana Agradaa was sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor by an Accra Circuit Court for charges including defrauding by false pretenses and charlatanic advertisement.

Otto Addo, who is the head coach for the side, has named a 24-man squad for the games, with Union Berlin left-back Derrick Arthur Köhn earning a maiden call-up.

Meanwhile, Jordan Ayew, Antoine Semenyo, Elisha Owusu and other players have already arrived in Accra.

After six games played, Ghana sit top of Group I with 15 points from six matches, three ahead of Comoros and five clear of Madagascar, as they pursue a fifth FIFA World Cup appearance.

Ghana Prisons Service has dismissed social media rumors surrounding Madam Patricia Asiamah Ghana Prisons Service has dismissed social media rumors surrounding Madam Patricia Asiamah

The Ghana Prisons Service has firmly dismissed widespread social media rumors surrounding Madam Patricia Asiamah, popularly known as Agradaa, who is currently serving her sentence at the Nsawam Female Prison.

Recent viral posts alleged that Agradaa was in poor health, suffering from swollen legs and receiving special medical attention from a private doctor multiple times a week. Some accounts even claimed she was emotionally distressed and crying frequently.

However, in an official statement signed by Deputy Director of Prisons Janet Asabea, the Service labelled these reports as false and misleading.

The statement emphasized that the rumours were deliberately spread by some social media users aiming to attract followers through sensational headlines like “Breaking news from Nsawam.”

The Ghana Prisons Service reiterated its commitment to the safe custody, rehabilitation, and reformation of all inmates, stressing that every prisoner is treated equally under the law.

Citizens are urged to disregard unverified social media reports and rely solely on official communications from the Ghana Prisons Service regarding inmate-related matters.

‘Dormaahene’s forefathers moulded golden stools’ – Anokye Frimpong

The Golden Stool (L) and Dormaa Manhene (R) play videoThe Golden Stool (L) and Dormaa Manhene (R)

Historian Anokye Frimpong has weighed in on the ongoing debate around the Golden Stool, which the Paramount Chief of Dormaa, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, has ignited.

According to the Dormaahene, historical claims that the Golden Stool was conjured from the sky must be disregarded because they are myths, as in his opinion, nobody could conjure a Golden Stool from the sky.

Speaking during the launch of the Bonokyempem Council in the Bono Region recently, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, stated, “If anyone tells you they can summon something to descend from the sky, I, Agyeman Badu II, I’m saying it is a lie.”

“Didn’t you see when the Golden Stool was recently outdoored, it looked welded- didn’t you see?”

The Golden Stool looks welded; nobody can command anything from the skies – Dormaahene claims

Otumfuo’s Nanahene replies Dormaahene over ‘welded Golden Stool’ comment

However, popular historian Anokye Frimpong has waded into the debate, saying the Golden Stool, which has been at the centre of Dormaahene’s controversy, was indeed conjured, and no historical fact has disputed this.

Speaking to Agyenkwa FM on this subject matter, Anokye Frimpong explained that Nana Dormaahene’s forbears instead moulded a Golden Stool which was seized by the Ashantis and melted.

He stated that a great-grandfather of the current Dormaa manhene, Nana Kofi Adu, manufactured an artificial Golden Stool that bore a resemblance to the original one used by the Ashantis. However, the Ashantis conquered Nana Adu Kofi and his people, taking custody of it.

He mentioned that “Under Opoku I, the Asantes went to war against the people of Dormaa, who were led by Nana Kofi Adu. The Ashantis defeated them and took away their Golden Stool.”

He added, “Because Konfo Anokyi has warned that there must be only one Golden Stool and that if anyone found one, the Ashantis should go to war and conquer it, the Ashantis defeated Dormaa and took hostage of their Golden Stool, melted it, and it became the first Golden Stool melted by the Ashantis in history.”

According to Anokye Frimpong, another great-grandfather of the current Dormaahene, Nana Kwadwo Adinkra Karikari, also manufactured a Golden Stool during the reign of Nana Osei Bonsu as the Asantehene.

He explained that the Golden Stool manufactured by Nana Kwadwo Adinkra Karkari, who was the chief of Jaman, became the second one the Ashantis seized through war and destroyed.

He concluded that all the welded Golden Stools in Ghana’s history were made and used by the forbears of the current Dormaahene, but not the Ashantis.

The Golden Stool, believed to have been conjured by Konfo Anokye centuries ago, remains a sacred symbol of the Ashanti Kingdom.

Why Fiscal Rules Alone Can’t Keep Ghana’s Public Finances in Check – An Expert View

0

At a time when the government is bent on ensuring fiscal discipline to curb rising debt, unnecessary expenditure amid economic reforms, a finance expert says setting fiscal rules alone cannot be the silver bullet.

The Chief Director of the Ministry of Finance, Dr. Patrick Nomo, says legislating fiscal rule rules is necessary but not sufficient to address the menace of public finance mismanagement.

Dr. Nomo, who was delivering a keynote address at the IMANI & IISD event on fiscal councils and fiscal rules, reminded the nation of a simple but often overlooked truth that rules alone don’t guarantee fiscal discipline.

The Chief Director of the Finance Ministry argued that while fiscal rules such as limits on borrowing or spending are useful tools, they cannot work in isolation without strong institutions and reliable data systems to back them up.

Dr. Nomo emphasized that even the most eminent experts cannot succeed without access to accurate and timely data. To buttress his argument, he pointed to the recent clashes in Parliament over conflicting fiscal figures from different state agencies as a worrying example.

For ordinary citizens, his point is easy to relate to. Imagine running a household budget. You may decide not to spend more than you earn, but if your income records are scattered, or if your family members keep making unapproved withdrawals, your rules won’t mean much.

In the same way, Ghana’s fiscal rules can easily collapse without coordination and enforcement.

Fortunately, Dr. Nomo did not leave his argument hanging as he outlined three conditions that he said are essential for a successful fiscal council.

Dr. Patrick Nomo, Chief Director, Ministry of Finance

He noted that the power of reliable data systems can not be underestimated. He said timely, accurate numbers are the foundation for monitoring rules. Without them, policymakers are “flying blind.”

Given the country’s political economy, Dr. Nomo maintained that managing political pressures is key. Fiscal indiscipline often comes from political decisions, such as election-year spending or populist policies. For him, rules alone cannot restrain leaders if the political will to enforce them is weak.

Last but not least is what he describes as institutional coordination. He calls for fiscal and monetary authorities, along with data-producing agencies, to work together. Conflicting numbers only weaken confidence in the system.

“It is very easy to set fiscal rules around revenue, expenditure, debt, or asset management, but if we don’t have a systematic way of collecting data to monitor them, the fiscal council will struggle. Our best people can only succeed if they have the data they require… The issue of political economy is also significant when it comes to economic management … and we must strengthen coordination and collaboration among fiscal and monetary institutions, as well as all holders of data in the fiscal space,” he indicated.

Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson

Ghana has trodden the path of fiscal rules before, dating back to the mid-2000s, but repeated fiscal slippages, especially during election cycles, show that rules on paper are not enough.

Dr. Patrick Nomo concludes that fiscal rules alone can’t guarantee fiscal discipline without a complement from strong institutions, accurate and timely data, and strong political will to stick to the rules.

President Mahama secures $1 billion investment boost to ‘Reset’ agenda – Ablakwa

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced that President John Dramani Mahama has returned from a historic state visit to Singapore, securing over $1 billion in investment deals under the Reset Agenda.

According to Ablakwa, the agreements include a $200 million OLAM project for a pasta processing plant and feed mills expected to create 4,000 jobs, and a $300 million Shangri-La investment for a five-star hotel, mall, and convention center in Accra.

Other commitments will enhance security at Kotoka International Airport, expand and revive Tema Port and the dry dock, and build a new jetty for oil vessels.

He added that Ghana will also benefit from road testing labs in collaboration with Singapore’s Land Transport Authority, a new 10,000-bed student hostel at the University of Ghana, and a partnership with the Singapore Institute of Technology to establish a model Accra Institute of Technology.

“His Excellency John Mahama has become the first Ghanaian President in history to be invited by a President of Singapore on a State Visit. But his visit was not just for the history books; he made profound impact by securing US$1billion worth of investment deals.”

The two countries further agreed on a joint payment platform, a Bilateral Investment Treaty, and training support for forensic investigators.

Ablakwa revealed that as part of a public service reset initiative, 18 Chief Directors from Ghana’s ministries will travel to Singapore in September for a leadership bootcamp.

He also noted that Ghana will open a consulate in Singapore by 2026, while Singapore has already set up Enterprise Singapore in Accra to oversee its West African investments.

Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam praised Mahama’s vision, describing him as “a man on a mission determined to see his country and its young population succeed.”

The visit has been hailed as the rekindling of ties once shared by Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, and Singapore’s founding leader, Lee Kuan Yew, and as a major step in advancing Ghana-Singapore relations while securing critical investments for Ghana’s economic reset.

Medeama SC beat Kotoko to sign ex-Hearts midfielder Salim Adams

Medeama beats Kotoko to sign Salim Adams Medeama beats Kotoko to sign Salim Adams

Medeama SC have pulled off a major transfer coup by completing the signing of former Hearts of Oak midfielder Salim Adams, GHANAsoccernet.com can exclusively confirm.

The 22-year-old, who was heavily linked with Asante Kotoko and also drew interest from clubs in Canada and Israel, has instead committed his future to the Ghanaian champions.

His arrival comes as Medeama step up their squad strengthening ahead of the new Ghana Premier League season.

Adams became one of the most sought-after free agents on the local market after running down his Hearts contract earlier this year, despite the Phobians tabling an extension offer.

Kotoko were reported to have opened discussions with their camp, but Medeama moved swiftly to secure the deal, underlining their determination to reclaim the Ghana league title and compete strongly in Africa.

Known for his physicality, tough tackling and ball-winning qualities, Adams broke onto the scene with Hearts in 2021 before securing a loan spell with Major League Soccer side FC Cincinnati.

On his return, he impressed with goals and assists, even with limited playing time in his final season in Accra.

Although Medeama are yet to officially unveil their new signing, sources confirm the deal is sealed.

Adams’ addition is expected to bolster their midfield options as the Mauve and Yellow aim to consolidate their growing dominance in Ghanaian football.

People carrying over $1m out of Ghana without declaring – BoG Governor reveals

0

“People are carrying more than a million dollars out of Ghana without declaring it,” Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Johnson Asiama has revealed.

Speaking on Joy News’ yet-to-be-aired PM Express Business Edition, he described such practices as major leakages that threaten the stability of the economy and undermine efforts to fight money laundering.

“If you look at the currency declaration context framework, for example, the intel we got was that some people actually take out, you know, large volumes of cash.

“People are carrying over a million dollars just out of Ghana, without declaring these, those are leakages, right?” Dr Asiama said.

“And so as a regulator, it is for us to work together with the other regulators, GRA and the others to ensure that if you have to carry such large sums, these are accounted for.

“These are declared. The sources are known. And don’t forget, that’s also good for the anti-money laundering fight that we have on our hands.”

The Governor stressed that the central bank’s recent market notices are not arbitrary but are aimed at sealing such loopholes.

He said the Bank of Ghana is redefining the framework to ensure efficiency and accountability in financial transactions.

“We are just, you know, redefining the framework within which the market has to work and work efficiently.

“These are things we should have been enforcing, but given the context in which we are, we’ve seen clearly that we need to set those boundaries clearly so that the markets can function and function properly,” he explained.

Dr Asiama dismissed suggestions that the Bank of Ghana is overreacting to pressures in the financial market.

“No, not at all. We are only taking advantage of what we are seeing to fix the market. It is like you have a soccer match, right? There’s a context within which the game has to be played, and so that’s exactly what we are doing.”

On the controversial notice restricting large withdrawals, he justified the move, citing findings from the central bank’s investigations.

“If you look at one of the notices, for example, on large withdrawals, that again was in response to the feedback that we got from our investigations, where you find certain corporates who earned money through export rights into their FCA accounts, and then they would want to withdraw these in large amounts.

“Imagine a corporation wanting to withdraw $10 million over the counter. The fact is, what do they use that for? Because their payments are abroad, they don’t carry physical cash to go and settle anything.

“And so the point we made there was that corporations like that do not need that cash locally. Any payments they want to make abroad will be made anyway. And so we said no, for such corporations, they can afford to play in that regime.”

He noted that ordinary individuals would not be affected in the same way.

“For individuals like you and me, probably you need your few $100 or $200 to do something, that’s understandable.

“You can negotiate with your bank, and then you would have a choice whether you want to take those few dollars, or you want to pay the commission, or you want them to change it into cedis for you; you are at ease to do that.”

The Governor insisted that the measures were well thought through, with full involvement of the banking sector.

“Let me also explain that we do not just issue these notices. We met with the banks. We met with the CEOs of banks a number of times. We took on board the feedback from them.

“And so you will see that the banks are silent. They are not complaining. It’s because they were consulted. We thought through this together before the notices were issued. And so we are confident that the notices will help.”

Adom Kyei-Dua ‘cries’ to church members over ‘unfair’ treatment

0

The founder and leader of the Believers Worship Centre, Stephen Adom Kyei-Dua, popularly known as Second Chance or Philadelphia Church, has accused the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) of unfair treatment after being slapped with what he describes as an “outrageous” electricity bill and a one-hour ultimatum to pay or risk disconnection.

Addressing the issue before his congregation on Sunday, August 31, 2025, the preacher alleged that ECG officials had deliberately targeted him and his Philadelphia Movement with an “exorbitant” electricity bill of GH¢500,000 (approximately 5 billion old cedis).

“Something is going on. At first, when I used solar and generators, I didn’t even accumulate debts like this,” he said.

He claimed that despite ongoing negotiations with ECG’s head office, a field officer arrived at his premises on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, and ordered him to settle GH¢200,000 of the bill within one hour or risk disconnection.

“Unknowingly, my solar system was powering the entire town of Pokuase Katapor Estate in Accra. We realised that when the solar is down, the entire electricity system in the town flows through my meter, and I end up paying for it.”

‘Enough is enough!’ – Adom Kyei-Duah blasts ‘helicopter crash prophecies’

“This is an issue we need to sit down and discuss. However, on Wednesday, an ECG official arrived here in a state of anger, giving us a one-hour ultimatum: if we didn’t pay GH¢200,000, he would disconnect the power. He said, look at the money you’re sharing in church, how much is GH¢500,000 debt to you?”

“If I’m the target in your church, is the electricity for your pastor? Because of your comment, what I will do to you, you will regret it in this country,” he cautioned.

Adom Kyei-Dua continued, “he proceeded to disconnect the power, but there was still electricity because, unknown to him, the solar system was powering the entire building.

“Since Wednesday, we haven’t had a single challenge with power. They were using my electricity and still giving me outrageous bills. Do you think you can destroy my life? It is better I buy diesel than use ECG’s electricity.”

He alleged that ECG had planned to disconnect his electricity to disrupt his church services on Friday and Sunday, but the plan failed.

“After eight months, you bring me a bill of 5 billion old cedis? Why should this country set its eyes on me? Why am I under attack by the nation? Am I a bad citizen? Even in Nigeria, where I was a foreign national, I was given recognition. I am a Ghanaian citizen and not a foreigner,” he lamented.

“I am under attack. You should know that the Philadelphia Movement and I, Stephen Adom Kyei-Dua, are under attack. I am sending caution to my attackers, please be careful because the snake bites when frustrated. If you don’t take care, I will show you the colour of my inside if this provocation continues.”

Adom Kyei-Dua explained that before installing a solar system at his church and in the surrounding community, his electricity costs were manageable because he relied heavily on generators.

He alleged that ECG’s billing system was wrongly configured, causing electricity used by other households in the area to be charged on his account.

“They realised that in the evening, when the sun is down and the electricity system takes over, all the bills of the households here flow back to my meter for me to pay,” he said.

SOEs revenue hits GHS133.7bn despite mounting losses – Report – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) recorded strong revenue growth in the 2024 financial year, with total earnings climbing 28.3 percent to GHS133.68 billion, up from GHS104.19 billion in 2023.

The performance, according to 2024 State Ownership Report was largely driven by robust expansion in the Energy sub-sector, which posted 38.98 per cent growth, and Financial & Allied Services, which surged by 49.52 per cent.

The sector also showed signs of operational recovery, with profit before interest and tax (PBIT) improving sharply to GHS1.57 billion in 2024, compared with GHS376.93 million in 2023 and a loss of GHS9.62 billion in 2022.

However, mounting finance costs weighed heavily on the bottom line.

The SOE sector ended 2024 with a net loss of GHS9.67 billion, wider than the GHS7.14 billion shortfall recorded in 2023. Excessive finance charges, totalling GHS9.39 billion, wiped out all operational gains.

On the balance sheet side, total SOE assets expanded by 22.52 per cent to GHS395.20 billion, with ECG, VRA, and GNPC leading contributions. Liabilities, however, rose faster at 24.20 per cent to GHS281.94 billion, with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) alone accounting for GHS71 billion.

Despite persistent losses from entities such as Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company, GNPA, Ghana Water Company Limited, Graphic Communications Group, and Tema Oil Refinery, nine SOEs—including the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Bui Power Authority (BPA), Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC), and BOST—maintained consistent profitability over the past five years.

In a positive development, three SOEs—Ghana Reinsurance Company, TDC Company, and State Housing Company—paid a combined dividend of GHS29.36 million to the government in 2024, representing a 78.9 percent increase from the previous year. Notably, the State Housing Company paid dividends for the first time in three decades.

Stade Rennais boss Habib Beye lauds Alidu Seidu’s aggression – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Stade Rennais head coach Habib Beye has singled out Ghana defender Alidu Seidu for praise, highlighting his fighting spirit as a quality some of his teammates lack.

Seidu, 25, endured a difficult campaign last season after being sidelined with a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury. He returned to the matchday squad last weekend against Angers but remained on the bench.

Reflecting on the player’s qualities, Beye pointed to Seidu’s impact in the club’s season opener against Lorient, where he came on as a substitute in the 4-0 defeat.

“When he joined [against] Lorient, he made his mark with his technique, his ability to quickly relieve pressure, his dynamism and his aggressiveness,” he said.

“Some of our players sometimes lack that extra bit of aggressiveness, but Alidu has it,” Beye added.

Seidu has so far featured once in Rennes’ first two Ligue 1 matches this season, playing 17 minutes against Lorient.

On the international front, the defender has been excused from Ghana’s squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifying double-header against Chad and Mali later this month.

‘If NPP loses Akwatia by-election, I’ll resign as MP’ – Michael Okyere Baafi vows

Michael Okyere Baafi is the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South Michael Okyere Baafi is the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, has made a declaration ahead of the September 2, 2025, Akwatia by-election, vowing to resign from Parliament if his party fails to reclaim the seat.

“If NPP loses this Akwatia by-election, I will resign as MP, mark my words!” GhOne TV quoted him as saying in an interview on August 31, 2025.

His statement follows that of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, who delivered an assessment of the governing National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) performance in its first eight months in power.

We will not tolerate violence and intimidation at Akwatia – NDC lawyers

Speaking to the media during the one-week observation of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Kumi, NAPO argued that the NDC had failed to deliver on its electoral promises, which propelled it to victory in the 2024 general elections.

“Every single thing that the NDC promised, they have failed. I haven’t seen any government that can fail on all its promises within eight months. The first of its kind is the NDC,” NAPO said.

He claimed that the NDC’s leadership has left Ghanaians disillusioned, likening the decision to vote out the NPP to “selling a colour television for black and white.”

The by-election has become necessary following the passing of Ernest Kumi, who represented the Akwatia constituency in Parliament until his death.

The contest is expected to be fierce between the NDC’s Bernard Bediako and the NPP’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu.

While NAPO stopped short of providing evidence to substantiate his allegations, he urged voters in Akwatia to reaffirm their trust in the NPP and vote overwhelmingly for its candidate, arguing that the ruling party had proven incapable of meeting the expectations of the Ghanaian people.

Al Ahly have officially parted ways with head coach Jose Riveiro after 4 months Al Ahly have officially parted ways with head coach Jose Riveiro after 4 months

Egyptian giants Al Ahly have officially parted ways with head coach Jose Riveiro, just four months into his tenure.

The decision follows a 2-0 home defeat to Pyramids FC at Cairo International Stadium on Saturday, leaving the Red Devils with only one victory from their opening four Egyptian Premier League matches and sitting 12th in the early-season standings.

An emergency board meeting convened on Sunday morning led to the mutual termination of Riveiro’s contract.

In a statement, the club said: “The club thanked Mr. Jose Ribeiro, the first football team’s technical director, and his assistant staff for the past period, and the contractual relationship was terminated by mutual consent.

“This came after the Planning Committee’s meetings attended by Captain Mahmoud El Khatib, the club’s president, and Captain Mohamed Youssef, the sports director, which began at 11:00 am today and continued for several hours, during which the reports submitted by both the sports director and the technical director were discussed, and in light of which the aforementioned decision was made.

“The committee, in its meeting with Jose Ribeiro, confirmed its appreciation for what he has provided since assuming responsibility, and that he has put in a lot of effort, but the results did not help to complete the experience, at a time when the club seeks to achieve the great ambitions of its fans at the local and continental levels.

“The Planning Committee continues its meetings to settle on the final vision for the technical staff that will lead the team during the next stage.”

Riveiro, who joined the Cairo-based club from Orlando Pirates on a two-year deal, had come under increasing pressure after Al Ahly failed to advance beyond the group stage of the FIFA Club World Cup earlier this year.

The club’s hierarchy is now set to determine the technical team that will lead Al Ahly for the remainder of the season.

Egypt central bank slashes key interest rates by 200 bps

Egypt's central bank resumed its interest rate-cutting Egypt’s central bank resumed its interest rate-cutting

Egypt’s central bank resumed its interest rate-cutting cycle on Thursday, slashing its overnight rates by a faster-than-expected 200 basis points, the third reduction this year as inflation cooled and growth surged.

The bank set the deposit rate at 22% and the lending rate at 23%, bolstering the government’s emphasis on economic growth. Economists in a Reuters poll had given a median forecast for a cut of 100 basis points.

Economic growth rose to a preliminary 5.4% in the second quarter of this year from 4.8% in the first quarter, boosted by increased tourism and manufacturing, the bank’s Monetary Policy Committee said in a statement accompanying the rates decision.

“This decision reflects the Committee’s updated assessment of inflation dynamics and the outlook” since the previous Monetary Policy Committee meeting on July 10, the statement said.

Headline inflation slowed to 13.9% in July from 14.9% in June, the state statistics agency CAPMAS said, having eased from a peak of 38% in September 2023.

The central bank expected inflation to continue declining over the coming year at least.

The central bank cut rates by 225 bps in April and 100 bps in May after holding them steady for a year following a 600 bps hike in March 2024, when it also allowed the pound to fall against the dollar by nearly half. It paused its cuts in July following an uptick in inflation.

“Regional support, especially from the Gulf countries through joint ventures, sovereign wealth fund investments, and multi-billion-dollar strategic partnerships have helped the economy recover and improved growth prospects,” economist Nasser Saidi told Reuters.

The Egyptian government has vowed to seek more investments from the Gulf as it works on keeping inflation on a downward trend, after a severe shortage of foreign currency long crippled its economy and forced it to take an expanded $8 billion IMF loan.

Ghana secures stable cocoa freight rates amid global shipping volatility – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Ghana has secured stable freight rates for its cocoa exports for the 2025/26 crop season after high-level negotiations with major global shipping lines in Rouen, France.

The talks, which brought together the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA), the Cocoa Marketing Company (CMC), and 20 international carriers, are expected to safeguard the country’s export competitiveness at a time of rising global shipping costs and geopolitical uncertainty.

Under the agreement, shipments to the United Kingdom will cost £32 per tonne, northern Europe will pay €56.72 per tonne, and Brazil will be charged US$122.05 per tonne. Long-haul destinations such as Japan were fixed at US$111.39 per tonne, while Mediterranean Europe was agreed at €63.67 per tonne.

All rates include bunker adjustment factors, and payments will be made in US dollars at Reuters exchange rates on the date of shipment.

The Cocoa Freight Negotiations, held annually, have become central to Ghana’s cocoa value chain by providing predictability for shippers and stability for carriers.

Chief Executive of the GSA, Prof. Ransford Gyampo, described the forum as a “strategic space for dialogue and partnership” that has consistently safeguarded Ghana’s cocoa trade.

He further noted that the new agreement comes at a time of considerable change in the maritime industry, adding: “These facilities, together with ongoing automation and the 24-hour port policy, will cut costs, improve turnaround times, and make Ghana’s cocoa trade more competitive.”

Beyond freight charges, Ghana is pushing aggressively into port modernisation and logistics. The second phase of the MPS Terminal at Tema is fully integrated, major upgrades have been completed at Takoradi, and the Boankra Inland Port—currently 80 percent complete—will soon extend services inland to exporters from Ghana’s middle and northern belts and even neighbouring landlocked countries.

Prof. Gyampo also highlighted digitalisation and sustainability as critical to the sector’s future. He said: “With many shipping lines rolling out e-services for documents and Bills of Lading, we must harmonise processes so digital tools are more accessible to small and medium exporters.”

On environmental sustainability, he stressed it was a “non-negotiable pillar,” pointing to Ghana’s Cocoa Traceability System and the International Maritime Organization’s green shipping strategy as evidence of alignment.

For a country that earns more than 70 percent of its foreign exchange from cocoa, freight costs are far from routine. The 2025/26 agreement provides exporters with clarity, secures revenue for government, and keeps Ghana competitive against rivals such as Côte d’Ivoire in global markets.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has announced a 50% reduction in admission fees for nursing and allied health training students, effective for the 2025/2026 academic year.

A statement issued by the Minsitry explained that the move is part of the government’s new “No-Fee-Stress” Policy, aimed at easing the financial burden on tertiary students and their families.

In a press release signed by Deputy Director and Spokesperson Tony Goodman, the Ministry said the reduction applies to all first-year students enrolled in public Nursing and Allied Health Training Institutions.

It will cover about half of the total approved fees.

The initiative fulfills a key promise by President John Dramani Mahama to provide financial relief and promote greater access to health training education.

The MoH has issued a strict directive to all institutions, mandating their full compliance with the new approved fee schedule.

Expensive loans driving up Africa’s debt servicing costs – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has raised alarm over the elevated risk premiums imposed on African debt, warning that the trend is driving up the cost of borrowing for economies across the continent, including Ghana.

According to him, African countries are compelled to secure loans at significantly higher rates than their peers in other regions—a situation that undermines fiscal stability and worsens debt vulnerabilities.

Africa’s total debt has now surpassed one trillion dollars, with more than 20 sovereign nations classified as having unsustainable debt by the end of 2024. Dr. Forson explained that this financing burden remains a major factor behind the continent’s repeated surges in debt-to-GDP ratios.

He stated: “I think the time has come for us to also pay attention to what constitutes the debt service as a percentage to revenue. This is largely because we are borrowing too expensively. Why should African countries borrow so expensive as compared to its peers in other parts of the world?

Why should the risk premium for African countries be so different from Europe, America and other parts of the world?”

He added: “And because we are borrowing so expensively we have little debt but the debt servicing cost is so expensive.”

Dr. Forson made these remarks in Accra after receiving a petition from the African Regional Organization of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC–Africa) in collaboration with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) Ghana, which is advocating for the total cancellation of Africa’s debt.

At the same time, he urged African governments to demonstrate greater accountability and transparency in the management of public debt.

He cautioned: “For me the use of debt is also very important. If we use our debt well, we should be able to pay these debts and because sometimes we also don’t properly use the debt that we accumulate.”

He further stressed: “We can’t forever be asking for debt-forgiveness if within us when we get this debt, we misuse it. So it is also important that TUC put pressure on governments to be transparent in accounting for its debts and to use this debt well.”

Guehi must stay if Palace are to be successful – Glasner

0

Crystal Palace must keep hold of captain Marc Guehi if they are to have a successful season, says manager Oliver Glasner.

Guehi scored as Palace beat Aston Villa 3-0 on Sunday night just three days after the club got through qualifying for the Europa Conference League.

The 25-year-old, who has one year left on his contract, has been the subject of an improved bid from Liverpool of £35m, which includes a 10% sell-on clause.

The Premier League transfer window closes on Monday at 19:00 BST.

“I told the chairman we have to keep Marc if we want to play a successful season,” Glasner told BBC Sport.

“We have no chance to find the right replacement in one day. We all agreed that we just sell Marc if we have the right replacement in the building.

“We wanted a replacement by 1 July. It is 31 August and we have no replacement. We have this agreement so it is clear from me. He is such a crucial player. He is one of our key players – he is our captain.”

Guehi has made clear he does not intend to sign a new contract at Selhurst Park and the club are reluctant to let him leave for nothing when his deal expires next summer.

Palace rejected a £65m deal to sell Guehi to Newcastle last year.

They have already lost one of their key players who helped them to FA Cup glory last season, as England forward Eberechi Eze joined Arsenal for £60m.

Speaking on Sunday night after the match at Villa Park, Guehi did not discuss his future.

“All I know is when you score goals like that it is always down to team performance,” he said. “People will try to single out the goal but that was a clear team performance tonight.”

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney added on BBC Match of the Day: “He has got everything you need for a centre-back in this game.

“He has shown a great level of professionalism to go out there and play for the team.

“He deserves a lot of credit because we have seen certain players refuse to play. But he deserves great credit for doing the right thing.”

Over 2,000 farmers in the Lambussie District have received support to boost crop production Over 2,000 farmers in the Lambussie District have received support to boost crop production

Over 2,000 farmers in the Lambussie District have received support to boost crop production and to enhance agricultural productivity in the area.

The initiative, aimed at helping farmers affected by last year’s drought, to have a better yield this season.

It also aimed at boosting food security, promote sustainable agriculture, and to improve the livelihoods of farmers in the district.

The support package included provision of agrochemicals, improved maize seeds, and fertilizers to boost agricultural productivity and crop yields.

Naawulle Ireneous Basingbie, the Lambussie District Chief Executive (DCE) told Ghana News Agency (GNA) that agriculture was the driving force behind national development, and it was therefore imperative to prioritize the sector to ensure sustainable growth and food security.

He noted that the intervention would significantly impact the district’s agricultural landscape and called for more support to achieve sustainable economic development.

The DCE expressed commitment to collaborating with the “Feed Ghana Programme”, which aims to transform the agriculture sector and provide support to farmers.

He noted that the initiatives would build a sustainable and inclusive agricultural sector that not only ensure food security but also drives economic growth and prosperity in the district and beyond.

He said,” Investing in agriculture is a crucial step in driving national progress and sustainable development of the country’s food security.”

Nambie Nathaniel Zim-meeweh, the Lambussie District Director of Agriculture encouraged beneficiaries to leverage the initiative to increase productivity and crop yields for the season.

He noted that the initiative would increase farmers’ incomes, help them recover losses from the previous year, and promote local economic development.

He emphasised that this initiative would support farmers’ productivity and efficiency, by ensuring that they have access to essential services and resources to boost their crop yields.

” I am confident that the initiative will cushion gallant farmers in the district to have a better harvest this season,” he added.

Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the support, which would help increase their crop production.

Ghana forward Mohammed Kudus has backed Tottenham Hotspur to return to winning ways right after the September international break.

The Black Stars talisman was in action for Spurs on Saturday when the team lost 1-0 to AFC Bournemouth in their Week 3 encounter in the 2024/25 English Premier League season.

Speaking in a post-match interview, Mohammed Kudus argued that the international break has come at a good time.

He believes the break will give players the chance to return with a fresh mindset to power the team to enjoy a good run.

“I think after the loss today, it’s good to get our way to refresh our minds and then come back fresh again,” Kudus said.

Tottenham Hotspur will face off with West Ham United on September 13 in the English Premier League after the international break.

Meanwhile, the forward is looking forward to playing for Ghana in the upcoming matches against Chad and Mali in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“I think playing for your country is also a massive part of us being players, representing your nation. So, it’s very, very important to me,” Kudus shared.

The Black Stars travel to N’Djamena to play Chad on September 4 before hosting Mali in Accra four days later.

Atlantic migration route from the coast of West Africa is one of the deadliest in the world Atlantic migration route from the coast of West Africa is one of the deadliest in the world

At least 70 people were killed when a boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of West Africa, Gambia’s foreign affairs ministry said late on Friday, in one of the deadliest accidents in recent years along a popular migration route to Europe.

Another 30 people are feared dead after the vessel, believed to have departed from Gambia and carrying mostly Gambian and Senegalese nationals, sank off the coast of Mauritania early on Wednesday, the ministry said in a statement.

It was carrying an estimated 150 passengers, 16 of whom had been rescued. Mauritanian authorities recovered 70 bodies on Wednesday and Thursday, and witness accounts suggest over 100 may have died, the statement said.

The Atlantic migration route from the coast of West Africa to the Canary Islands, typically used by African migrants trying to reach Spain, is one of the world’s deadliest.

More than 46,000 irregular migrants reached the Canary Islands last year, a record, according to the European Union. More than 10,000 died attempting the journey, a 58% increase over 2023, according to the rights group Caminando Fronteras.

Gambia’s foreign affairs ministry implored its nationals to “refrain from embarking on such perilous journeys, which continue to claim the lives of many”.

According to a press release signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, the violence reportedly began during the traditional sprinkling of Kpokpoi, the ceremonial food of the festival.

A misunderstanding between supporters of two rival chiefs led to an exchange of gunfire, throwing the celebration into chaos.

The incident escalated further when some festival attendees attempted to leave the grounds, resulting in more attacks at nearby Olebu.

Three people have been confirmed dead. They are Abubakar Ramadan Sarbah, also known as Nii Kwashiebu, Theophilus Nii Amu Kwadjan, and Joseph Shaibu Dodoo.

Their bodies have been taken to the Police Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

We will not tolerate violence and intimidation at Akwatia – NDC lawyers

0

The NDC group has announced plans to deploy body cameras for effective monitoring of voting The NDC group has announced plans to deploy body cameras for effective monitoring of voting

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Lawyers Association has declared its readiness to deploy a strong team of legal practitioners to Akwatia in the Eastern Region to monitor and safeguard the upcoming by-election.

According to the group, recent developments in Akwatia, including threats of violence allegedly made by some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as well as reported attacks on NDC leaders, have raised serious concerns about the safety and integrity of the polls.

In a statement issued on Saturday, August 30, 2025, and signed by Isaac Minta Larbi, Legal Director of the Eastern Region and Chairman of the NDC Eastern Legal Team, the lawyers condemned what they described as “unwelcome and unwarranted threats” aimed at creating fear among voters in the constituency.

“These threats are unacceptable and constitute an affront to our democracy and rule of law, which seeks to ensure that under our democracy people are free to exercise their rights to vote in a peaceful, free and fair manner,” the statement read.

The lawyers pointed to reports of individuals arrested with guns attempting to enter Akwatia, as well as alleged attempts to attack NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, and the party’s candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, during the 40-day memorial service of the late Ernest Kumi, former NPP parliamentary candidate.

They called on the Ghana Police Service to urgently investigate the incidents and bring perpetrators to justice.

The group stressed that Ghana’s democracy has matured and should not be undermined by acts of violence and intimidation.

Latest poll puts NDC’s Baidoo in ‘comfortable lead’ in Akwatia by-election

“We cannot at this stage allow hooligans and people who don’t seem to care much about our democracy to try to derail it, especially under the Presidency of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama,” the statement emphasized.

The NDC Lawyers also revealed that during the December 7 parliamentary elections at Akwatia, several electoral infractions were observed, leading to a lawsuit against the Electoral Commission and the late Ernest Kumi.

To prevent a repeat of such disputes, the group announced plans to deploy body cameras for effective monitoring of voting and collation processes.

As part of their deployment, the lawyers will serve in multiple capacities including polling agents, counting agents and collation agents while also engaging in overall monitoring of the electoral process in collaboration with the Electoral Commission and security agencies.

“Our lawyers will be playing different roles, including monitoring compliance with the law during the voting process, to ensure that the people of Akwatia feel safe and secure on election day in order to exercise their constitutional and democratic rights,” the statement noted.

The lawyers underscored their unwavering support for the NDC candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, describing him as a colleague and member of the NDC Lawyers Association.

They expressed confidence that once the election is conducted fairly, he will emerge victorious and bring the needed development to Akwatia.

“This election ought to be monitored properly to avoid any subsequent lawsuits, because after the election the people of Akwatia deserve development and not litigation,” they added.

Reiterating their commitment to democracy and peace, the group insisted that acts of voter intimidation, harassment, and violence will not be tolerated.

They concluded by activating their call for all body cameras to be deployed during the election.

IGP engages special operations team in Damongo, reaffirms peace in Bole – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohonu, has reaffirmed the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to sustaining peace and security in the Bole area of the Savannah Region.

The assurance follows his engagement with the Special Operations Team deployed to Bole during a working visit to the Savannah Regional Police Headquarters in Damongo. The visit, described as morale-boosting, was aimed at strengthening the operational readiness and professionalism of officers on the ground.

Addressing the team, the IGP commended their dedication and urged them to remain disciplined, vigilant, and ethical in the discharge of their duties. He emphasized the importance of proactive policing and close collaboration with other security agencies to ensure lasting peace.

“The nation counts on your professionalism and commitment. Stay alert, stay united, and continue working collaboratively with other security agencies to enhance coordination and efficiency,” Mr. Yohonu said.

He further directed the officers to intensify daily patrols, particularly in the boundary areas of Bole, where reports of displacement have raised concerns. Vulnerable communities, he noted, should be given special protection to prevent the escalation of conflict and guarantee the safety of residents.

The IGP also highlighted the importance of inter-agency cooperation, stressing that stronger collaboration with other security institutions will enhance effectiveness in tackling crime and instability.

Following the engagement, the Special Operations Team returned to Bole to continue critical duties, including community patrols, intelligence gathering, and conflict prevention initiatives.

Their ongoing presence, police say, has already contributed significantly to stabilising the area and restoring public confidence.

ASHMA to evacuate 40,000 cubic metres of refuse from Ashaiman

ASHMA has begun moves to evacuate about 40,000 cubic metres of refuse ASHMA has begun moves to evacuate about 40,000 cubic metres of refuse

The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) has begun moves to evacuate about 40,000 cubic metres of refuse across the municipality as part of efforts to improve sanitation.

Freeman Tsekpor, Ashaiman Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after an evacuation exercise at the Sakasaka Park area.

He said the exercise formed part of the Assembly’s activities to rid the municipality of filth, adding that similar evacuations had already taken place at Presby Junction, Ashaiman Main Market, Newtown Junction, and the Sakasaka Park.

Tsekpor stated that a sanitation task force would be deployed to guard the cleared sites and prevent further dumping, warning that offenders would be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent. He also expressed the Assembly’s readiness to collaborate with stakeholders in the sanitation sector to make Ashaiman a clean, model city where businesses and residents could thrive.

Ernest Henry Norgbey, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashaiman, said sanitation remained a top priority for the constituency. He noted that Ashaiman did not have a landfill site but indicated that he would lobby private investors to help establish recycling plants to convert waste into useful products while creating jobs.

He further assured that engagements with central government would continue to secure more refuse containers for placement at vantage points across the municipality to curb indiscriminate dumping.

The GNA observed that the evacuation exercise at Sakasaka Park involved officials from ASHMA, the Ghana Red Cross Society, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and personnel from the security services, among others.

Ghana’s Joseph Paintsil nets winning goal for LA Galaxy

Joseph Paintsil scored the winning goal for LA Galaxy on Sunday evening Joseph Paintsil scored the winning goal for LA Galaxy on Sunday evening

Ghana international Joseph Paintsil scored the winning goal for LA Galaxy on Sunday evening in their MLS League Cup third-place clash against Orlando City SC.

The Black Stars winger started for his team in the crucial game played at Dignity Health Sports Park.

In a game where Paintsil lasted the entire duration, he was a menace to Orlando City’s defense, playing a key role in his team’s attack.

On the matchday, LA Galaxy struck early when former Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus equalised in the 9th minute.

That goal separated the two teams at halftime, but Orlando City SC came back stronger in the second half and roared from behind to restore parity to the game in the 60th minute when Martin Ojeda found the back of the net.

However, just six minutes later, Joseph Paintsil decided the clash with a low drive from the edge of Orlando City’s box, sealing a 2-1 win for his team to win third place in the League Cup.

Courtesy of the win, Joseph Paintsil and his LA Galaxy side have qualified for the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup.

Paintsil, 26, has been invited by Ghana coach Otto Addo for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification matches against Chad and Mali.

He will be travelling to Ghana on Monday to join the team’s camp for the upcoming matches on September 4 and 8, respectively.
