Viral video sparks proposal controversy

The video has gone viral and sparked a lot of conversation The video has gone viral and sparked a lot of conversation

A video capturing a young woman’s decision to reject a marriage proposal has gone viral after the man refused to kneel, igniting widespread debate across social media platforms.

The footage, shared on X on Friday, September 12, 2025, shows the man greeting the woman with a warm hug, both visibly excited.

Moments later, they sit down, and he attempts to place a ring on her finger without kneeling. Instead of joy, the woman appears visibly disappointed and unenthusiastic.

She is heard urging the man to kneel before proposing.

The man, however, counters her request, insisting that standing was perfectly acceptable and that “it’s just a proposal.”

Since its release, the video has sparked intense reactions online. While some users defended the man’s stance, arguing that love should not be measured by gestures, the majority sided with the woman.

Many praised her for standing up for what the act of kneeling symbolises.

The incident has reignited conversations around modern relationships, cultural expectations, and the evolving meaning of romantic traditions.

Chairman Wontumi drops another bombshell

0

Chairman Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional chairman of the NPP Chairman Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional chairman of the NPP

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiko, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, says Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia is destined to become president on the party’s ticket before any aspirant could.

Drawing a parallel with past US leaders, he mentioned how certain politicians paved the way for others, referencing the paths of Joe Biden and Barack Obama.

In his analogy, he suggested that just as Biden played a role in relation to Obama’s presidency, party members and the various aspirants should recognise Bawumia’s precedence in the NPP’s path to governance.

Speaking to delegates in Atwuma in the Ashanti Region, he explained that “If Allan had fully supported Nana Addo to win the 2008 elections, he would have been the next in command to take over after Nana Addo.”

However, he alleged that this was not done, saying, “Allan is a fine gentleman, but the presidency has eluded him. We are left with only 9%, therefore, if we support, he Bawumia can make it.

“Then your preferred candidate can take over when he is done with his term. In fact, if we had fully backed Dr Bawumia in the 2024 general election to win, his first term would have started counting to the end for another person also to come,” he emphasised.

Dr Bawumia led the NPP to the December 2024 elections as its presidential candidate but lost to the NDC’s John Dramani Mahama.

He has staged another comeback by aspiring to lead the party to the next general elections, which will be held on December 7, 2025.

Five distinguished members of the NPP are aspiring to lead the party as its flagbearer in the 2028 general elections.

The aspirants are: former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and the party’s former General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong.

NPP Primaries: Bawumia must unite all aspirants after decisive win – Effiduase/Asokore MP

The rest are former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and former Agric Minister Dr Bryan Acheampong, who has been the member of parliament for Abetifi since 2016.

Per Chairman Wontumi’s analogy, all the aforementioned aspirants who desire to lead the party must be prepared to support Dr Bawumia to first lead and wrestle power from the NDC before their dreams can be realised.

Meanwhile, the party has scheduled January 31, 2026, as the date for the presidential primaries, where delegates will be expected to line up and cast secret votes to elect one out of the five aspirants.

Here’s IMF’s latest projection of Ghana’s total debt stock by end of 2025

0

IMF Director of Communications, Julie Kozack IMF Director of Communications, Julie Kozack

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected that Ghana’s total debt stock to reach about 60% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by the end of 2025.

The IMF attributes the projected reduction to Ghana’s recent debt restructuring programme, which has improved the country’s fiscal outlook.

“The recent debt restructuring agreement has significantly improved debt service indicators for Ghana,” IMF Director of Communications, Julie Kozack said during a recent press briefing in Washington, DC.

She added that the development would create more room for economic recovery and allow the government to invest in critical sectors.

IMF backs massive tariff hikes to fix Ghana’s energy sector

“This drop can be described as a specifically steep reduction in Ghana’s public debt,” Julie Kozack said, adding that it marks a restoration of fiscal sustainability.

Touching on measures needed to maintain the projected decline, the IMF emphasised the importance of boosting domestic revenue, strengthening public financial management, and maintaining fiscal discipline.

Recent data from the Bank of Ghana indicates that as of June 2025, the country’s total debt stock had already dropped to GH¢613 billion, representing 43.8% of GDP.

Meanwhile, the latest projection by the Bretton Woods institution reflects significant progress toward debt sustainability.

Bournemouth was awarded a penalty eleven minutes after Mitoma’s equalizer and Semenyo calmly converted the kick to restore his team’s lead in the game.

Substitute Baleba’s effort high over the bar was as close as Brighton came to rescuing a point they would not have deserved.

Brighton pushed for an equalizer late on, but Bournemouth held firm. Semenyo’s performance earned him applause from the stands as the Cherries sealed a big home win.

At least 193 killed in two separate boat accidents in northwestern DR Congo

0

Both accidents took place about 150km (93 miles) apart in the Equateur province Both accidents took place about 150km (93 miles) apart in the Equateur province

Two separate boat accidents this week in northwestern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have killed at least 193 people and left dozens missing, authorities and state media said.

The accidents happened on Wednesday and Thursday, about 150km (93 miles) apart in the Equateur province.

One boat with nearly 500 passengers caught fire and capsized on Thursday evening along the Congo River in the province’s Lukolela territory, killing 107 people, DRC’s Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs said in a report.

The report said 209 survivors were rescued following the accident, involving a whaleboat near the village of Malange in Lukolela territory.

A memo from the Ministry of Social Affairs, seen by the Reuters news agency, said 146 people were missing.

A day earlier, in a separate accident, a motorised boat capsized in the Basankusu territory of the province, killing at least 86 people, most of them students, state media reported.

Several people were missing, but the reports did not give a figure for how many.

It was not immediately clear what caused either accident or whether rescue operations were continuing on Friday evening.

State media attributed Wednesday’s accident to “improper loading and night navigation”, citing reports from the scene. Images that appeared to be from the scene showed villagers gathered around bodies as they mourned.

A local civil society group blamed Wednesday’s accident on the government and claimed the toll was higher.

Search operations took place after the accidents, with naval personnel and community volunteers combing the banks while authorities pledged medical care for the injured, assistance to bereaved families and the repatriation of survivors to their places of origin and destination.

River transport is a lifeline in DRC’s vast rainforest regions, where old, wooden vessels are the main form of transport between villages. It is also often cheaper than travelling on the few available roads.

However, the vessels are poorly maintained and crumbling under the weight of passengers and their goods, and accidents are frequent.

On such trips, life jackets are rare, and the vessels are usually overloaded.

Many of the boats also travel at night, complicating rescue efforts during accidents and leaving many bodies often unaccounted for.

Rescue operations are also often hampered by limited resources and the remote locations of accidents.

  • Adelaide criticised grown men for leaving inappropriate remarks and others for blaming Nakeeyat’s presence online
  • Ghanaians reacted online, with some supporting Adelaide’s stance while others defended free speech and criticised child stars

A Ghanaian woman had publicly defended the young poet, Nakeeyat Dramani, following the disturbing comments the teenager faced in one of her recent videos on social media.

In a passionate TikTok video, the lady, identified as Adelaide, said she was initially excited to see the young star, Nakeeyat, boldly attacking a societal vice through sensitization in dance moves.

Sadly, the excitement quickly turned to anger and disbelief after reading the comment section of Nakeeyat’s dance video. YEN.com.gh understands that Nakeeyat recently shared a video on TikTok dancing to Focalistic’s President Ya Straata.

In the video, she wore a grey-coloured top over wine-coloured leggings with a cap of the same colour and white sneakers to match. She threw her legs about in excitement. The comment on the post made Adelaide question the intentions and motives of many Ghanaians.

According to her, instead of praising the 13-year-old for her courage, several grown men left inappropriate comments, the very behaviour Nakeeyat tried to sensitise the public on.

Adelaide expressed shock that many commenters not only made inappropriate remarks but also blamed Nakeeyat for being active on social media. Some even claimed they “made her famous” and now regretted it.

“People are in the comment section telling her that ‘we made you who you are today’, ‘I regret voting for you’. You are proving her right,” Adelaide said in her video.

She also called out the double standards of adults who once celebrated child stars but now shame them when they use their voices to speak on real issues.

Bawumia has genuinely helped party members from polling stations to national leaders – Nana Akomea

0

According to a report by GhanaWeb, a senior figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has commended former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his record in public service, emphasizing that leadership should be assessed by competence rather than a person’s background in business.

During an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme on Friday, September 12, 2025, Akomea argued that while some critics judge leadership ability based on business success, effective governance is defined by performance in public office.

He stressed that individuals excel in different fields, and what matters most is how well one delivers in their chosen role.

He further highlighted that several of Dr. Bawumia’s policies and initiatives have been adopted by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which he said demonstrates their importance to national progress.

According to Akomea, the NPP presidential hopeful has consistently shown a strong commitment to inclusive leadership.

He revealed that Dr. Bawumia intends to ensure fairness in government appointments and has outlined a system designed to distribute resources more equitably across the country.

One of the key initiatives mentioned is a proposed constituency budget plan, which will channel funds directly to constituencies to guarantee that every area benefits from national development projects.

Akomea also praised Dr. Bawumia’s efforts in supporting party members at all levels, from grassroots polling station officers to national executives.

He maintained that, if elected, Bawumia would prioritise equity in governance and implement policies that strengthen decentralisation while addressing the needs of all constituencies.

“Bawumia has genuinely helped party members, from polling station executives to national leaders. If he comes to power, he aims for equal appointments and plans to implement constituency budgets so that every constituency is aware of and benefits from decentralised resources,” Nana Akomea indicated.

Native Styles for Young Boys in 2025

0

In 2025, native fashion for boys continues to redefine modern style by harmonizing cultural heritage with contemporary trends. This stylish evolution not only honors traditional roots but also infuses vibrant creativity into boys’ wardrobes, making native wear more versatile and fashionable than ever.

One of the most striking features of 2025 native styles is the bold use of colorful fabrics. Iconic materials like Ankara and Kente dominate the scene, celebrated for their vibrant hues and intricate patterns. These fabrics are crafted into modern silhouettes—think tailored shirts, tapered trousers, and casual jackets—that blend elegance with playful charm. Geometric and floral prints are especially popular, offering a youthful yet culturally grounded aesthetic.

Versatility is another hallmark of this year’s trend. Boys can pair a native-print shirt with denim or chinos for a relaxed outing, or opt for a full traditional ensemble—such as a dashiki, senator wear, or agbada—for formal occasions like weddings, festivals, or naming ceremonies. The ability to effortlessly mix and match native pieces allows for creative expression while maintaining cultural integrity.

Accessories are not left behind in 2025’s native style revolution. Beaded necklaces, handmade bracelets, and traditional caps add flair and personal identity to each outfit. Footwear choices such as leather sandals, custom slippers, or woven shoes provide both comfort and cultural authenticity.

An exciting new twist this year is the infusion of modern design elements into traditional attire. Leather accents, trendy tailoring, and subtle streetwear influences bring freshness to native looks, making them appealing to today’s fashion-conscious youth.

Ultimately, the latest native styles for boys in 2025 reflect a perfect blend of culture and contemporary flair. These designs empower boys to celebrate their heritage while confidently embracing modern fashion. Whether for casual days or grand events, native-inspired outfits offer stylish options that are rich in meaning and full of personality.

Leave DSTV, Fight LGBTQ – Nana Romeo To Sam George

0

Nana Romeo

Radio host, Nana Romeo, has taken on Communications Minister Sam George, dismissing his focus on DSTV pricing as misplaced and urging him to return to his earlier crusade against LGBTQ+ issues.

On Okay FM on September 8, 2025, Nana Romeo described DSTV as a “luxury, not a necessity,” recalling how former President John Mahama cancelled DSTV subscriptions in government offices without backlash from Multichoice.

“Anyone who can afford it can buy it. Shutting DSTV down will only hurt sports lovers and our creative industry,” he argued, pointing out that the platform holds exclusive rights to Ghana’s World Cup qualifiers and has supported local film production.

He downplayed complaints about overpricing, saying price disparities exist everywhere, from bottled water to entertainment services.

But his sharpest jab was directed at Sam George’s perceived silence on LGBTQ+ issues since assuming ministerial office. “Before you came into power, you focused on LGBTQ+. Ever since you came to office, you have been silent. These are things to be fighting for, not DSTV,” Nana Romeo reportedly added.

Mamprugu Youth Demand Apology From Ken Team

0

The Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA), Bawku Chapter, has described as reckless and malicious a social media post authored by Mr. Kwasi Kwarteng, spokesperson for Mr. Kennedy Agyapong, alleging that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia flew a rival chief to Bawku and imposed him on the people in the heat of an election.

The association described this as “a blatant falsehood which is not only shameful but also dangerous, as it seeks to exploit the sensitive Bawku chieftaincy issue for cheap political points.”

These were contained in a release authored by President of MAYA, Bawku Chapter, Seidu Awudu and Abdul Majeed Bagura, Secretary.

This lie, according to the association, “was first manufactured and propagated by the then opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for political gain in 2024. It is therefore disgraceful that Mr. Kennedy Agyapong and his spokesperson, who claim to have supported the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate in that election, are now shamelessly recycling the same propaganda against the very candidate they purportedly supported.”

It is particularly appalling, MAYA noted, “that at a time when the NDC itself is running away from the tribal politics it ignited and is currently suffering retribution for those actions; Mr. Agyapong and his team are attempting to resurrect those same poisonous tactics.”

This, MAYA went on, is not only irresponsible but a direct insult to the people of Bawku and the entire Mamprugu Kingdom, who have long borne the brunt of reckless political manipulation.

The association has notified Mr. Kwarteng and his boss that the Bawku conflict should not be a tool for campaign propaganda, stressing, “To recklessly twist facts for political capital is to play with the peace and security of our people. No serious leader should engage in such divisive conduct.”

The association is demanding a full and unqualified retraction and apology to the people of Bawku, and Mamprugu.

If this demand is not heeded, the association has threatened to “declare Mr. Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team persona non grata in our jurisdiction until such a retraction and apology is rendered.”

No individual, no matter how highly placed, will be allowed to trade the peace of Bawku for political expediency, MAYA stressed, adding that “the future of our people is far more important than the desperation of politicians.”

Cedi slide exposes Central Bank’s artificial inducement — Ahiagbah

0

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has accused the Mahama administration of creating a temporary illusion of stability around the cedi, arguing that its recent depreciation exposes what he described as “financial waste” resulting from the Central Bank’s unsustainable interventions.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, September 13, Ahiagbah argued that the government’s earlier actions to strengthen the local currency were not grounded in sound policy but rather in artificial support mechanisms.

“Now what we’re seeing is the cedi actually getting to a place where it is standing on its own, competing in the marketplace and its value as we are seeing is depleting. The artificial inducement they’ve given to the cedi, we’re losing it. And technically if you’re looking at it, I am inclined to say that, that was financial waste or financial loss, by dumping all of those things to create a certain appearance of performance. We’ve been asking them what exactly did you do to bring the cedi down the rate at which they brought it. It was not policy, if it was policy then it is just simple policy — let’s provide the dollars. But that’s not sustainable,” he said.

President John Dramani Mahama has defended the Bank of Ghana’s earlier interventions, insisting they were necessary to halt steep depreciation that had made economic planning difficult.

“I believe that it is about stopping rapid depreciation of the currency. When you have steep depreciation of about like we had in 2024, 25% depreciation in the currency in the first half of the year, it makes planning difficult. And so yes, Bank of Ghana has been intervening in the forex market but they’ve withdrawn,” Mahama explained at his media engagement on Wednesday, September 10, at Jubilee House.

Meanwhile, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, has also sought to reassure markets, stressing that the recent slide of the cedi should not be mistaken as a collapse of stability.

“The recent modest depreciation, some have wondered, reflects the market adjusting to reforms and seasonal trade patterns. It is not at all a reversal. We expect continued interbank activity and fiscal discipline to restore balance and reinforce long-term stability,” Dr. Asiama said at an SME forum in Accra on Thursday, September 11.

The cedi has faced renewed pressure in recent weeks after months of relative calm, triggering heated debate over whether the government’s approach to stabilising the currency was merely cosmetic or a step towards deeper reforms.

The cedi, which recently topped global currency rankings on the back of strong gold prices, has slipped 13 per cent this quarter. Bloomberg data indicates this is the steepest decline worldwide, wiping out part of the 50 per cent gain recorded between April and June.

An Open Petition to H. E. John Mahama

0

Razak Kojo Opoku(PhD) Writes:

Religious tension, much like ethnic and tribal conflict, poses a significant threat to national unity and security. The silent but deeply felt leadership vacuum and potential succession crisis within the Islamic religious community in Ghana demand urgent national attention.

This open petition respectfully seeks your intervention, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, in addressing the following pressing concerns related to the Islamic faith in Ghana:

1. Establishment of an official succession plan for the Office of the National Chief Imam

2. Proper and accurate representation of Muslim leadership on the Board of the National Peace Council

3. Amendment to the National Peace Council Act, 2011 (Act 818) to reflect the realities of religious pluralism within Islam and Christianity in Ghana

Muslim Sects/Denominations in Ghana

The Muslim population in Ghana is far from monolithic. It comprises a diverse set of Sects and Denominations, each with its own leadership, constitution, and administrative structure. These include:

1. Tijaniyya Muslim Community

2. Ahlussunna Wal-Jama’a (Sunni Muslim Community)

3. Ahmadiyya Muslim Community

4. Shia Muslim Community

5. Qadiriyya Muslim Community

6. Salafi Muslim Community (Salafi Movement)

7. Wahhabi Movement

8. Society of the Muslim Brothers (Muslim Brotherhood)

9. Non-Aligned Muslims

10. Other Sufi Orders not listed above

Each of these groups operates autonomously and has distinct theological and administrative identities. Any national-level religious decision or representation, therefore, must reflect this diversity.

However, currently, in accordance with the National Peace Council Act, 2011(Act 818), only the representatives of Ahlussunna Wal-jama’a(Sunni Muslim Community), Tijaniyya Muslim Community, and Ahmadiyya Muslim Community are members of the Governing Board of National Peace Council.

Lack of an Official Succession Plan for the Office of the National Chief Imam

Ghana is on the brink of a potentially destabilizing national Muslim leadership crisis following the eventual exit of His Eminence Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, the current National Chief Imam.

The Office of the National Chief Imam was politically created by former President Jerry John Rawlings without comprehensive consultations or consensus among all Muslim denominations/sects in Ghana. Though the office is widely recognized by political actors and institutions, it lacks a formal legal framework, constitutional mandate, or succession plan accepted by the full spectrum of Muslim sects/denominations in Ghana.

Notably, His Eminence Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu is a member of the Tijaniyya Muslim Community, yet he is NOT the Supreme Leader or President of the Tijaniyya Muslim Council of Ghana. That title currently belongs to His Eminence Sheikh Khalifa Ahmed Abul-Faidi Maikano Jallo, the President and Spiritual Leader of the largest Tijaniyya population in the country.

Given this background, we strongly urge H.E. John Mahama, Ministry of Interior, and the National Peace Council to initiate inclusive consultations with all key leaders of the various Islamic sects in Ghana, including:

1. Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu

2. Sheikh Khalifa Ahmed Abul-Faidi Maikano Jallo (Tijaniyya)

3. Maulvi Mohammed Bin Salih (Ahmadiyya)

4. Sheikh Salman Mohammed Alhassan (Ahlussunna Wal-Jama’a)

5. Sheikh Abubakar Ahmad Kamaludeen (Shia)

6. Leaders of other recognized Sufi Orders and Islamic Movements/Sects/Denominations in Ghana.

The aim of this dialogue must be to either:

1. Establish a broadly accepted succession framework for the Office of the National Chief Imam, or

2. Dissolve the “concept of National Chief Imam of Ghana” in favor of recognizing each sect/denomination’s leadership independently—similar to the recognition model used for Christian denominations in Ghana.

Misrepresentation on the Board of the National Peace Council

Section 4(Vii) of the National Peace Council Act, 2011 (Act 818) provides for Tijaniyya Muslim representation on the governing board of the National Peace Council.

However, there is a serious and unacceptable anomaly in the current implementation. That is,

Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, Spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, currently occupies the Tijaniyya seat, despite not being a member of the Tijaniyya sect, but allegedly affiliated with Ahlussunna Wal-Jama’a (Sunni Muslim Community).

This contradicts the stipulation of the Act and represents an injustice to the Tijaniyya Muslim Council of Ghana and its members across the country.

As such, we call on H.E. John Mahama, the National Peace Council, and the Ministry of Interior to urgently correct this misrepresentation by replacing Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu with a legitimate representative nominated by the Tijaniyya Muslim Council of Ghana, led by His Eminence Sheikh Khalifa Ahmed Abul-Faidi Maikano Jallo.

Amendment to the National Peace Council Act, 2011 (Act 818)

The current framework of Act 818 does not reflect the full diversity of the Islamic or Christian faith communities in Ghana. We respectfully recommend the following amendments:

1. Expand representation on the Board of the National Peace Council to include all major Islamic sects and denominations.

2. Formally recognize registered Christian associations and councils not currently captured under the Act.

Such changes will enhance the legitimacy, inclusivity, and national relevance of the National Peace Council.

Inaction by Past Muslim Vice Presidents

Ghana has had two Muslim Vice Presidents under the 4th Republic namely:

1. H.E. Alhaji Aliu Mahama

2. H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Regrettably, neither was able to take concrete steps to resolve the Islamic leadership issues and potential succession crisis. Their failures to act has left a dangerous vacuum in the Islamic governance structure in Ghana, a vacuum that could escalate into division and unrest in the future.

A Humble but Urgent Appeal to H.E. John Mahama

Your Excellency, as a former President and a statesman respected across the religious spectrum, we humbly and urgently call upon you to help reset and resolve the looming leadership crisis confronting the Islamic community in Ghana.

We also respectfully urge that immediate steps be taken to replace Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu on the National Peace Council Board to uphold the legal provisions of Act 818 and respect the integrity of the Tijaniyya Muslim Council of Ghana.

Conclusion

This petition is not driven by sectarian interest, but by a commitment to justice, fairness, and peace in our beloved country. Ghana’s strength lies in its religious and ethnic diversity, and this diversity must be properly acknowledged and respected in national policy and governance.

Bold Patriotic Alliance endorses Bawumia as NPP flagbearer for 2028 elections

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is the former Vice President of the Republic of Ghana Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is the former Vice President of the Republic of Ghana

The Ashanti Regional branch of the pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) group, Bold Patriotic Alliance, has declared its support for former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, urging delegates to elect him as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

The declaration was made at Abuakwa in the Ashanti Region during Dr Bawumia’s campaign tour of the Atwima Nwabiagya constituency, part of his bid to lead the NPP once again.

Dr Bawumia has concluded a three-day campaign tour of the Ashanti Region. The NPP’s defeated flagbearer in the 2024 elections is seeking re-election to lead the party into the 2028 polls.

On Wednesday, September 10, 2025, he began his regional tour to rally support from delegates for his comeback bid.

At Abuakwa, where he met with delegates from the zone, members of the Bold Patriotic Alliance openly declared their endorsement.

Bawumia campaign team expresses gratitude to Ashanti Region supporters

The group maintained that Dr Bawumia stands out among all candidates who have filed nomination forms to contest the party’s primaries.

Acheampong Takye Desmond, Executive Secretary of the group, told GHOne News that Dr Bawumia is the only candidate Ghanaians trust to lead the country after President Mahama’s tenure ends.

“What we, the Bold Patriotic Alliance, are saying is that come January 31, 2026, we want all delegates voting in the NPP’s presidential primaries to vote for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia,” he said.

He explained, “President Mahama has announced his intention to seek re-election in 2028, which means the NDC will present a new candidate who must be marketed to Ghanaians. Unlike Dr Bawumia, who has already been marketed as Vice President for eight years, flagbearer in 2024, and running mate in the 2008, 2012, and 2016 elections.”

He added, “Currently, with Dr Bawumia as the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2028 elections, the party would only need a 9% swing to reclaim power from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). That’s why we say, ‘Aka 9 pɛ na yaba power.’”

The group’s Secretary, Francis Adu Owusu, also stated that after reviewing the campaign messages of all aspirants, they are convinced that Dr Bawumia’s vision for constituency and party development is unmatched.

“We strongly believe that Dr Bawumia’s plan for delegates and grassroots development will transform the party if given the opportunity to lead. He has assured us that if elected and he wins the 2028 general elections, each constituency will receive 10 appointments. This means grassroots supporters will have leaders to turn to for support, strengthening the party at the base. We, the bulls on the ground, believe Dr Bawumia is the right man for the job,” he said.

Another member, Abdul Raman Wadugu, noted that although other aspirants held various positions in the previous NPP administration, none can match Dr Bawumia’s achievements.

Asante Kotoko Sporting Club overcame Berekum Chelsea 1-0 in the Premier League opener on Saturday thanks to Albert Amoah’s second-half strike to claim their first win of the season at the Golden City Park.

Coach Abdul Karim Zito had warned his supporters they may need patience following the team’s abysmal performance in the GHALCA Top 4, and their hard work paid off to punish a well-organized home defense.

Zito named a strong starting eleven for this crucial encounter with some notable names like Kwame Poku, Emmanuel Antwi, and Samba O’neil.

However, that plan did not come into perfection after Poku’s injury, which forced him to bring in a new signing, Morifin Donzo.

After a labored first-half display with a couple of chances squandered, Berekum Chelsea failed to keep Kotoko’s frontline at bay and conceded an 80th-minute goal from Albert Amoah in their own backyard.

The Porcupine Warriors, who were far from impressive during the preseason, would be happy for earning a huge three points to start the campaign with victory.

Samuel Boadu’s side will be disappointed for starting the campaign empty-handed and will now shift their attention to All Blacks when they make a long trip to Swedru.

Elsewhere, Asante Kotoko will also welcome Nigerian side Kwara United in the CAF Confederation Cup next week at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Gloria Sarfo claims Ghanaian movies helped elevate Nigerian actors Gloria Sarfo claims Ghanaian movies helped elevate Nigerian actors

Ghanaian actress Gloria Sarfo has pushed back against claims that Nigerian movies were responsible for the rise in popularity of Ghanaian actors and actresses.

DStv Saga: ‘Removing Akwaaba Magic could hurt Ghana’s film industry’ – Gloria Sarfo

According to her, such a narrative is not only misleading but also undermines the impact of Ghana’s own film industry.

Speaking during a GhanaWeb X Space session held on Friday, September 12, 2025, Sarfo asserted that, historically, it was Ghanaian movies that helped elevate Nigerian actors, not the other way around.

“I don’t think it’s the Nigerian movies that have made Ghanaian actors popular. First of all, I can categorically say that it is Ghanaian movies that have made Nigerian actors popular because just a few years ago, until a Nigerian actor was seen as one who had arrived or as an A-list actor, it was only after they came to Ghana to film that they earned that title,” she explained.

While acknowledging that Nigerian films have contributed to the visibility of Ghanaian talent, Sarfo stressed that they cannot be credited as the sole reason for Ghanaian actors’ success.

“Just a few years ago, we made them popular, and I don’t know what popularity they gave Ghanaians. They didn’t make us popular, but they actually contributed to the level of popularity that we have,” she added.

81-year-old Ghanaian-British woman back in UK after travel row

Madam Hannah Dankwa has returned to her family in the UK Madam Hannah Dankwa has returned to her family in the UK

Madam Hannah Dankwa, an 81-year-old Ghanaian-born British citizen, has finally returned to the United Kingdom after being stranded in Ghana for about four months due to a documentation discrepancy.

Her return brings relief to her family and supporters who had expressed concern over her prolonged stay.

The issue, according to earlier reports, stemmed from challenges with her travel documents, which delayed her journey back to the UK.

The octogenarian, who is battling cancer and undergoing chemotherapy, had travelled from the United Kingdom to Kumasi with her daughter, Akua Duah, for a two-week family holiday.

However, when she attempted to board her return flight, she was denied passage despite carrying the same documents she had used for more than 40 years.

Why an 81-year-old British citizen has been stranded in Ghana for months

Her daughter described the ordeal as a nightmare.

“We were shocked. Mum has travelled from the UK to Ghana and back with the same documents for over 40 years. There has never been a problem. Now, she and I have been stuck in a hotel room for months because of this discrepancy,” Akua earlier lamented to Channel 4 News.

The family then wrote to UK authorities, including the Home Office, appealing for urgent intervention. The National Health Service (NHS) also confirmed Madam Dankwa’s ongoing cancer treatment and stressed that she required close medical supervision in the UK.

Reacting to her return in an interview with Channel 4 News, and sighted by GhanaWeb, Madam Dankwa expressed relief and joy.

“I feel really good because all of my children and grandchildren were born here [in the United Kingdom]. so I don’t see the point why they were discriminating against me. They just left me there,” she said.

Madam Dankwa’s daughter, Akua Duah, told Channel 4 News that she questioned why, all of a sudden, despite her mother being a long-time resident of the UK, concerns were now being raised about her legitimacy and right to live in the country.

Although Madam Dankwa does not hold a permanent British passport, she joins thousands of immigrants who are often subjected to what many critics believe are discriminatory immigration laws.

Madam Dankwa, who was born in Kumasi in 1944, when Ghana was a British colony, is considered part of the Windrush generation, a term often associated with Caribbean migration but which also includes Commonwealth citizens who moved to the UK before 1973.

Hosting Commonwealth event will uplift micro businesses – Lord Marland to Ghana

0

The Chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC), Lord Jonathan Marland, has urged President John Dramani Mahama and his administration to consider hosting a major Commonwealth business event in Ghana, a move he believes could significantly uplift the country’s micro enterprises.

Ghana’s economy shows promising recovery – UK’s Lord Marland

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on September 11, 2025, Lord Marland stressed the transformative potential of such gatherings, particularly for small businesses that often lack access to global networks and investment opportunities.

“I would suggest to the President, whom I’m going to meet in a few minutes’ time, that maybe we should have a Commonwealth event here,” he said.

Lord Marland explained that while CWEIC membership typically involves bespoke services at a cost, many micro businesses cannot afford such fees. To bridge this gap, the Council organises three major events every two years, open to all businesses across the Commonwealth.

“It’s up to those micro businesses whether they want to participate in that event. They’re free. We don’t charge them anything,” he noted.

“Obviously, there’s a cost to them of traveling to it perhaps, but we create the environment where they can attend and meet other businesses from across the Commonwealth and beyond,” Marland continued.

He also highlighted growing interest from the Middle East and pointed out that Ghana’s diplomatic infrastructure, including its embassies and trade envoys, positions the country well to host such a gathering.

“With the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth being from Ghana, it makes complete sense,” Lord Marland added.

“We will bring Commonwealth businesses here to Accra, and hopefully those micro businesses will benefit, from an investment point of view and from a trade point of view,” he concluded.

Ethiopia, Sudan defer border dispute amid domestic woes

0

Sudanese security officers patrol as Ethiopian refugees are seen at the Al-Fashaga camp Sudanese security officers patrol as Ethiopian refugees are seen at the Al-Fashaga camp

Ethiopia and Sudan may have delayed solving a border dispute between them as they faced domestic woes including conflict.

Yet this dispute is one of the most complex and long-standing issues shaping relations between the two neighbouring states. The conflict centres around the Al-Fashaga region in Sudan’s Gedaref State, a stretch of fertile agricultural land exceeding one million acres.

For decades, this land has been a theater of population overlaps, agricultural competition, and recurring violence—turning what could have been a zone of prosperity into a hotspot of tension.

The story dates back to a 1902 treaty signed between the United Kingdom, the colonial authority in Sudan, and Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia. While the treaty defined the borders on paper, it was never fully demarcated on the ground.

The absence of practical implementation allowed Ethiopian farmers, often backed by local militias, to gradually expand into Al-Fashaga. Since Sudan’s independence in 1956, this lack of tangible border demarcation has been a recurring source of friction.

Sudan grounds its legal claim in the 1902 Treaty and the 1903 MacMichael Protocols, both of which provide it with internationally recognised legitimacy over Al-Fashaga.

Ethiopia, however, challenges these agreements, arguing they were signed under colonial circumstances and did not adequately reflect Ethiopian interests. This divergence in legal interpretations has sustained the dispute for over a century.

In the 1970s, then Sudanese President Jaafar Nimeiri and Emperor Haile Selassie reached a deal to demarcate the border according to the 1902 lines. Yet, the deal was never fully implemented.

Joint committees in the 1990s and early 2000s produced technical proposals but also failed to translate them into binding action.

On the ground, informal arrangements took root, allowing Ethiopian farmers to cultivate land in Al-Fashaga in return for partnerships or fees. While this eased tensions temporarily, it left the core dispute unresolved.

The outbreak of the Tigray war in Ethiopia in late 2020 created an opening for Sudan’s military. Seizing the moment, the Sudanese Armed Forces reasserted control over large portions of Al-Fashaga that had been under Ethiopian influence for decades.

This shift altered the balance of power on the ground and triggered direct clashes between the two armies, placing the border dispute at the forefront of Sudan-Ethiopia relations once again.

Al-Fashaga is not merely a strip of contested territory—it is an economic lifeline. The region has the potential to serve as a breadbasket for Sudan, producing sesame, sorghum, and oilseeds at a time when the country faces acute food insecurity due to the ongoing war.

Conversely, for Ethiopia, particularly the Amhara farmers who rely on Al-Fashaga’s fertile soil, the land represents a vital source of livelihoods.

This makes the dispute not only about sovereignty but also about food security and survival for communities on both sides.

The border conflict cannot be separated from broader regional dynamics, especially the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (Gerd). Ethiopia occasionally leverages the border issue as a bargaining chip in its negotiations with Sudan, while Sudan, in turn, uses its territorial claims to reinforce its regional stance on Nile water politics.

Egypt, too, has a vested interest in the stability of the Sudan-Ethiopia border, as renewed conflict could open another front of instability in the already fragile Horn of Africa.

Regional organisations such as the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) have attempted to mediate, but their efforts have largely been limited to calls for dialogue and de-escalation, without producing any lasting resolution.

Behind the headlines, ordinary farmers remain the most vulnerable stakeholders. Their lives are caught between politics and geography: harvests disrupted by violence, villages overshadowed by military checkpoints, and roads that once facilitated trade now function as lines of confrontation. For these communities, Al-Fashaga is not a diplomatic file but a question of daily survival and dignity.

Adding to the complexity is the presence of armed militias along the border. Often operating beyond the full control of either government, these groups contribute to instability and heighten the risk of sudden escalation.

As of 2025, the dispute remains far from resolved.

NPP’s John Boadu Speaks Out on Attempts by National Security To Arrest Him, Video

  • John Boadu has detailed his ordeal at the hands of National Security, accusing the institution of trying to arrest him
  • In an interview, he explained how the state security agency called him in for interrogation over an issue regarding MASLOC
  • Ghanaians who reacted to the video have shared varied opinions on the issues raised by the ex-NPP General Secretary

The Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has detailed attempts by National Security to arrest him.

In a video sighted by YEN.com.gh on the TikTok page of @asaasepa, the former SIGA boss, speaking in an interview, said he had been targeted by the security agency and had been invited to the office of National Security for questioning.

Detailing what led to the invitation, John Boadu disclosed that during the erstwhile NPP administration, the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) brought in cars and were giving them out under the condition that persons who wanted them must pay ten per cent of the amount upfront, after which they would pay the rest in instalments.

Hearing this, he financially supported 16 regional secretaries of the party to buy the cars by paying the required ten per cent using his own funds.

He then expressed surprise that when some individuals defaulted on payments, National Security found it necessary to come after him, even though he was not a guarantor for any of them.

“They thought they would find documents showing that I guaranteed for them, so that it would seem as though I took a car and refused to pay. By God’s grace, they found none.”

He explained that his decision to support the regional secretaries in getting the cars was to ensure that they could earn some income by using the vehicles for commercial purposes.

At the time of writing the report, the video had racked in over 700 likes and 22 comments.

The African Dashiki wedding suit set is more than just clothing — it is a celebration of culture, identity, and style. This unique ensemble fuses the vibrant history of African fashion with the sophistication of contemporary formal wear, making it the perfect choice for grooms who wish to honor their roots while looking effortlessly stylish on their big day.

The Dashiki Shirt: The Heart of the Outfit

At the center of the Dashiki wedding suit is the shirt — a bold and beautiful piece that carries centuries of cultural significance. Traditionally crafted from richly patterned fabrics such as wax prints, kente, or Ankara, the Dashiki shirt showcases striking colors and intricate motifs that instantly command attention.

Modern designs often feature a tailored yet comfortable fit, allowing the groom to move freely while maintaining a sharp appearance. Embroidery is commonly added along the neckline, cuffs, or chest area, elevating the shirt into a luxurious statement piece. As one groom once said, “Wearing a Dashiki on my wedding day was not just about fashion — it was about carrying my culture with pride as I stepped into a new chapter of life.”

Complementary Pants for a Cohesive Look

The pants in a Dashiki wedding suit are designed to complement the shirt’s vibrant style. Some grooms opt for matching fabric to create a fully coordinated look, while others choose a solid, neutral tone to balance the ensemble. Slim-fit or straight-cut pants are popular choices, creating a polished and contemporary silhouette that highlights the elegance of the outfit.

Accessories that Tell a Story

To complete the look, grooms can personalize their attire with accessories such as a matching tie or pocket square, a pair of polished leather shoes, or a traditional headpiece like the Kufi or Fila. These elements add a deeper cultural dimension to the outfit, allowing each groom to showcase his individuality while paying homage to African traditions.

A Celebration of Heritage and Style

What makes the Dashiki wedding suit truly special is its ability to merge the past with the present. It is not just a fashion statement but a symbol of pride and identity. Whether worn for a traditional African wedding, a modern ceremony, or a fusion of both, this attire ensures that the groom stands out in a memorable and meaningful way.

In a fashion world that constantly evolves, the Dashiki wedding suit remains a timeless choice — one that reflects heritage, sophistication, and love. For the modern groom, it is more than an outfit; it is a powerful expression of culture and confidence.

Annie Macaulay Idibia

Nollywood actress Annie Macaulay Idibia has said she is hopeful her daughter won’t make the same sacrifices she did during her marriage to music star 2Face Idibia.

In a cryptic post on her Instagram story on Monday, Annie wrote, “I hope my daughter doesn’t accept things I’ve accepted, that she knows her worth from the start and that no matter what, she always has me in her corner.”

The message is widely interpreted as a reflection of her turbulent marriage to 2Face, with whom she has two daughters. Their relationship was marred by controversy, as the singer fathered five children outside their marriage.

2Face confirmed his separation from Annie in January 2025 before marrying Natasha Osawaru in a private ceremony in July 2025.

Annie, who has often spoken openly about love, loyalty, and resilience, has now shifted her focus to empowering her daughters to value themselves and avoid the pitfalls she endured.

Small-Scale Gold Exports Hit $6bn – GoldBod

0

Sammy Gyamfi

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has disclosed that the country’s small-scale gold exports have surged to an unprecedented $6 billion in just eight months of 2025.

According to him, the record milestone, represents 66.7 tonnes of gold exported between January and August this year.

Speaking at the maiden edition of the Mining and Minerals Convention in Accra yesterday, Mr. Gyamfi explained that the volume and value of small-scale exports so far this year have already surpassed the entire 2024 outturn, which stood at 63 tonnes valued at $4.6 billion.

He noted that the small-scale sector’s exports have even overtaken those of the large-scale mining industry, which produced 65.1 tonnes worth $5.6 billion within the same period.

“These much-needed foreign exchange inflows have significantly strengthened Ghana’s reserves, improved our balance of payments and provided critical support to the Cedi,” Mr. Gyamfi told the gathering, which included senior government officials, mining executives, and policymakers.

Reforms Driving Growth

He said the GoldBod, established under the Mahama administration to streamline the country’s gold trade, holds exclusive rights to purchase and export all artisanal and small-scale gold, while also having the mandate to buy portions of large-scale production.

He indicated that since its inception, it had rolled out reforms that have begun transforming the sector, pointing out that among them are aggressive licensing measures to promote responsible sourcing, tighter oversight of the gold supply chain, and the introduction of a transparent pricing system for licensed miners and buyers.

Mr. Gyamfi said the Board had also deployed aggregation systems to mop up gold across mining districts, scrapped the 1.5 percent withholding tax on unprocessed small-scale gold to reduce smuggling incentives, and created a GoldBod Taskforce to tackle illegal trading.

“These measures are not just reforms on paper. They are working, and the results are evident in the record-high exports we are seeing today,” Mr. Gyamfi emphasised.

Supporting National Reserves

Beyond exports, he stated that the GoldBod is supporting the Bank of Ghana’s gold reserve accumulation policy.

According to him, it has so far purchased nearly 100 kilograms of gold locally from large-scale producers for the central bank.

Plans are also underway to roll out a nationwide traceability system before the end of 2025, ensuring that every gram of gold traded can be traced to a licensed, environmentally compliant mine, he hinted.

Tackling Illegal Mining

He reaffirmed the GoldBod’s commitment to combating illegal mining, popularly known as “galamsey,” which has devastated water bodies and forests.

Mr. Gyamfi announced that the Board would donate GH¢5 million and five Toyota Hilux pickups to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) to boost its enforcement efforts.

Additionally, from November this year, he said the Board would fund the reclamation of 1,000 hectares of degraded forest reserves as part of its ecological restoration programme.

According to him, GoldBod will also invest in potable water systems, schools, health facilities, and scholarships for mining communities under a new corporate social responsibility policy to be launched in October, this year.

Investment and Industrialisation

The CEO revealed a landmark $1 billion partnership with Goldstream Global DMCC, which will be converted into a commercial agreement by November.

The deal, he said, aims to establish more than 300 responsible mines in collaboration with concession owners and communities.

To further industrialise the sector, he stated that the Board had secured land at Kotoka International Airport to construct an ultra-modern ISO-certified assay laboratory and a wholly state-owned gold refinery.

These facilities will enable Ghana to shift from exporting raw doré to refined bullion, he added and continued that plans were also in motion to develop a “Gold Village” to serve as a continental hub for jewellery and ornament production.

“It is a national shame that Ghana, a continental leader in gold, continues to export doré instead of bullion. This must change, and the GoldBod is committed to ensuring it does,” Mr. Gyamfi stated.

Call for Innovative Financing

Mr. Gyamfi stressed that Ghana’s ability to maximise benefits from its mineral wealth hinges on innovative financing.

He urged local banks, pension funds, and capital markets to shift from conservative lending and invest boldly in mining, geological surveys, refining, and value addition.

“As a country, we must create export credit facilities for funding mining equipment and structure mining-focused on-lending to equip local banks to fund mining production,” he urged.

He further suggested that pension funds, which currently yield negative real returns, should be reoriented towards gold investments as a hedge against inflation and a source of sustainable growth.

The President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for the candor he displayed during his recent media interaction as reported by Ghana Web.

Cudjoe, who shared his thoughts on Citi FM’s The Big Issue over the weekend, said Mahama’s openness highlighted the qualities of a leader ready to engage citizens directly.

He described the encounter as a refreshing example of political accountability in an era where many leaders shy away from scrutiny.

According to him, Mahama’s delivery projected wisdom and a strong sense of responsibility.

“My immediate impressions were clearly that this president was actually quite humane. He was truthful, he was wise, he was knowledgeable, he was practical and verifiably accountable,” Cudjoe remarked.

The IMANI Africa president stressed that citizens deserve leaders willing to confront pressing issues publicly rather than avoiding dialogue.

He observed that Mahama has often demonstrated this willingness, adding that such an approach helps build trust in political leadership.

Cudjoe also applauded the professionalism of the journalists who participated in the session, stating that their questions allowed for a meaningful exchange.

He described the overall engagement as “characteristically brilliant,” pointing out that both the president and the media played their roles effectively in ensuring transparency.

The Government has announced the allocation of $50 million to support the National Vaccine Institute (NVI) in its vaccine research and manufacturing activities.

The support, announced by President John Mahama at the Ghana Vaccine Manufacturing Investment Forum held in Accra, will help in the building of a vaccine manufacturing infrastructure.

It will also support compliance with international regulatory standards as well as the training of scientists and technicians through the biomanufacturing training consortium.

Speaking at the forum hosted by the Ministry of Health (MoH) through the National Vaccine Institute, President Mahama further directed stakeholders to put in place the necessary steps, in the next two months, to formalise the review and strengthening of Ghana’s procurement systems.

He also called for the prioritisation of all public procurement processes for products manufactured locally.

President Mahama also urged stakeholders to support Ghanaian manufacturers, to enable them export to other African countries and participate in the African Pooled Procurement Mechanism (APPM), de-risk guarantees and tailored financing instruments to facilitate access to Afrexim loans for Atlantic Lifesciences and DEK Vaccines.

Afreximbank announced a funding package for Atlantic Lifesciences and DEK Vaccines through its African Life Sciences Foundation Fund to support research on diseases that disproportionately affect Africa.

The fund will prioritise drug research and health interventions focused on African populations.

The forum built on the vision of the Africa Health Sovereignty Summit hosted by President Mahama which saw the launch of the “SUSTAIN Initiative”, setting the stage to scale up sovereign transition and institutional networks for investment-driven, country-led health systems anchored in local ownership, partnerships and regional cooperation.

GNFS blames human error for Timber Market and Lartebiokorshie fires

0

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has attributed recent fires at the Accra Timber Market and Lartebiokorshie to human negligence.

Greater Accra Regional Fire Commander, ACFO II Rashid Kwame Nisawu, revealed that preliminary investigations show both fires were caused by careless acts.

“In the Lartebiokorshie case, what we are picking from our preliminary investigations is that a foreign expatriate — a Chinese national — smoked and dropped the cigar into a dustbin. That is believed to have started the fire,” he explained on Channel One Newsroom on Saturday September 13.

Touching on the Accra Timber Market incident, he said, “In this particular case, someone closed for the day, gathered refuse, and set it on fire. He then went to sleep. The fire spread and caused the damage we witnessed.”

ACFO Nisawu stressed that both incidents highlight a worrying disregard for basic fire safety practices.

“These are clear cases of human error. It shows that people are not taking fire education seriously,” he noted.

The Timber Market fire, which broke out in the early hours of Saturday, September 13, 2025, destroyed several shops and left two firefighters injured. However, the swift response from the GNFS and support agencies prevented the fire from spreading to nearby areas, including the Ayalolo cluster of schools.

Ghana’s Electoral Commission has reopened nominations for the crucial Tamale Central parliamentary by-election after two candidates withdrew their candidacies, leaving only one contestant in a race that has already captured national attention.

The unprecedented situation emerged when two of three initially nominated candidates withdrew after Wednesday’s nomination deadline, leaving NDC’s Prof. Seidu Alidu as the sole remaining contender for the seat vacated by the tragic helicopter crash death of incumbent MP Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

The commission announced Friday it would extend the nomination period by ten days, from September 12 to 21, 2025, invoking Article 50(2) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution. The constitutional provision specifically addresses scenarios where multiple candidates are initially nominated but only one remains standing before election day.

Under the constitutional framework, no candidate nominated during this extended period can withdraw their nomination, ensuring the democratic integrity of the contest. The by-election remains scheduled for Tuesday, September 30, 2025, meeting the constitutional requirement to fill parliamentary vacancies within 60 days.

The withdrawal of candidates from the People’s National Convention and Liberal Party of Ghana has raised questions about the competitive dynamics of the contest. Both parties officially communicated their decisions through their respective general secretaries, though specific reasons for the withdrawals have not been publicly disclosed.

Adding another layer of political complexity, the ruling New Patriotic Party previously announced its decision not to field a candidate, citing solidarity with the NDC following the tragic loss of Dr Muhammed. The gesture represents an unusual display of cross-party sympathy in Ghana’s typically competitive political landscape.

Prospective candidates face a structured nomination process requiring completion of forms available on the Electoral Commission’s website. Each nomination must be supported by two registered voters as proposer and seconder, plus endorsements from eighteen additional registered voters within the constituency.

The commission has established specific operational parameters for the extended period. Nominations will be received at the Tamale Metropolitan Office between 9:00am to 12:00pm and 2:00pm to 5:00pm daily. Candidates must provide two recent passport-sized photographs with red backgrounds and pay filing fees of GHC 10,000, though female candidates and persons with disabilities benefit from reduced fees of GHC 7,500.

Prof. Seidu Alidu secured his nomination through a decisive victory in NDC’s internal primaries held at the Alhaji Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, defeating eleven contenders to represent the party in the crucial northern constituency.

The Tamale Central seat became vacant following the August 6 helicopter crash that claimed Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed’s life, shocking Ghana’s political establishment and northern communities. The incident occurred during official duties, highlighting the risks faced by public officials in remote service.

This by-election carries significance beyond its immediate political implications. The constituency represents a strategic northern seat where electoral outcomes often reflect broader regional political sentiments. The reduced field of candidates, combined with the NPP’s withdrawal, creates an unusual electoral environment that may influence future party strategies.

The extended nomination period offers an opportunity for additional candidates to enter the race, potentially restoring competitive balance to what appeared destined to become an uncontested election. Political observers are monitoring whether any individuals or parties will utilize this constitutional window to field candidates.

As nominations reopen, the commission’s adherence to constitutional provisions demonstrates Ghana’s institutional commitment to democratic processes even amid unusual circumstances. The situation tests the flexibility of electoral procedures while maintaining the integrity of democratic representation in one of the country’s important northern constituencies.

US judge questions deportation of West African migrants to Ghana

Ghana has already received 14 deportees from the US Ghana has already received 14 deportees from the US

A U.S. judge on Saturday said it appeared that President Donald Trump’s administration intentionally circumvented immigration laws this week when it deported Nigerian and Gambian migrants to Ghana.

Judge Tanya Chutkan, based in Washington, D.C., scheduled an emergency hearing after lawyers representing some of the migrants said their clients had expected they would be moved to their home countries, where they fear torture or persecution.

The deportations are part of Trump’s strategy to send migrants to “third countries” to speed their removal and pressure migrants in the U.S. illegally to leave.

Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama said this week that his nation had struck an agreement with the U.S. to accept West African deportees and had already received 14 people.

Chutkan said it appeared the Trump administration crafted the deal as a way “to make an end run” around U.S. legal requirements that it refrain from sending migrants to danger in their home countries.

“These are not speculative concerns,” said Chutkan, an appointee of former President Barack Obama. “The concerns are real enough that the United States government agrees they shouldn’t be sent back to their home country.”

Still, Chutkan said it was not immediately clear what actions she could take or whether the case should go before a Boston-based judge hearing a broader case over such removals.

A lawsuit filed Friday on behalf of five of the migrants said they were taken from a Louisiana immigration detention centre, shackled, and put on a U.S. military plane without being told their destination. Several migrants on the flight were placed in straitjackets for 16 hours, the complaint said.

The five plaintiffs had U.S. legal protections against deportation to their home countries, the lawsuit said. One of the migrants, a bisexual man, has already been sent to Gambia and was in hiding, it said. The other four have been held in squalid conditions in an open-air detention facility operated by the Ghanaian military, it said.

In a court filing, the U.S. Department of Justice said it no longer had custody of the migrants, that the court lacked authority to intervene in diplomatic actions, and that a Supreme Court decision in June allowed the government to send migrants to nations other than their country of citizenship.

Plaintiffs are represented by two advocacy groups, the American Civil Liberties Union and Asian Americans Advancing Justice.

The deportations have sparked criticism in Ghana.

In a statement on Friday, opposition lawmakers called for the agreement to be suspended, saying it should have been approved by Ghana’s National Assembly.

The deal “risks our country being perceived as aligning itself with the U.S. government’s current immigration enforcement regime, one which has been criticised as harsh and discriminatory,” the statement said.

A Ghana government spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ghana Sports Minister Questions Otto Addo’s Future

Kofi Adams

Ghana’s Sports Minister Kofi Adams has publicly expressed dissatisfaction with Black Stars coach Otto Addo’s performance, raising serious questions about the German-born tactician’s future ahead of crucial World Cup qualifiers.

Adams voiced frustration over the output of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, warning that Ghana’s World Cup qualification campaign remains on shaky ground. The minister’s criticism follows mixed results in recent international fixtures, including a disappointing 1-1 draw against Chad that sparked widespread calls for coaching changes.

Speaking in a candid interview with Accra-based Citi FM, Adams questioned how long the current arrangement could continue. “If I tell you I am impressed, then it means I do not know my job. I am not,” Adams stated. He acknowledged that Addo accepts responsibility for poor performances but questioned the sustainability of repeated apologies without tangible improvement.

The timing of Adams’ comments adds pressure to Ghana’s World Cup qualification hopes. Ghana currently leads Group I with 19 points after beating Mali on Monday, but Madagascar trails by just three points with Comoros still in contention for first place. The Black Stars need positive results in their remaining fixtures to secure direct qualification for the 2026 tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Ghana’s absence from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco has intensified scrutiny on the technical team. Addo, 49, was reappointed in March 2024 on a three-year contract but has faced intense criticism after failing to guide the team to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The failure to qualify for the continental showpiece marked a significant setback for Ghanaian football.

The Sports Minister emphasized the precarious nature of Ghana’s World Cup qualification, noting that the team cannot afford complacency despite their current group position. “We have not even qualified for the World Cup yet. We still need a win and at least a draw to comfortably say that, as far as our group is concerned, nobody can overtake us,” Adams explained.

Recent reports suggest some players have lost confidence in Addo due to uncertainty over his future tenure. This development could complicate team dynamics during the crucial final stages of qualification.

The Ghana Football Association has yet to respond officially to the minister’s comments. However, the association has previously shown support for Addo despite disappointing results, suggesting internal discussions about the coaching situation may intensify following Adams’ public criticism.

Ghana’s next World Cup qualifier fixtures will likely determine both the team’s tournament prospects and Addo’s coaching future. With Madagascar and Comoros remaining competitive threats in Group I, the Black Stars face a challenging path to secure their place at the expanded 2026 World Cup.

The debate over Ghana’s coaching direction reflects broader concerns about the national team’s trajectory after years of underperformance in major tournaments. As qualification hangs in the balance, pressure continues mounting on both the technical team and football administrators to deliver results that match Ghana’s historical pedigree in African football.

Kwesi Arthur lights up Wassa Nkonya with rhythmic magic

Kwesi Arthur is a musician Kwesi Arthur is a musician

Beneath a sky dusted with stars, in a night that transcended mere performance and became a cultural baptism of rhythm and raw energy, the bustling town of Wassa Nkonya was forever etched into the annals of Ghanaian entertainment history.

On July 27, 2025, the Nhyiraba Hotel grounds shook to their very foundation as SPYY Entertainment, in a powerful alliance with Jonamass Travel and Tours, delivered an unforgettable FIESTA headlined by the inimitable rap sensation, Kwesi Arthur.

The air, thick with anticipation and the sweet scent of night-blooming flowers, crackled with a palpable electricity long before the first beat dropped.

A sea of eager fans flooded the venue, their collective energy creating a pressure cooker of excitement that was just waiting to explode.

And explode it did, the moment the man of the hour emerged from the shadows.

Bathed in the pulsating glow of stage lights, Kwesi Arthur, a figure of pure artistic swagger, commanded the stage with the effortless cool of a modern-day king.

Dressed in an outfit that perfectly blended streetwise elegance with authentic Ghanaian flair, he stood before his people, not just as a star from the big city, but as a prodigal son returning with the ultimate gift: an electrifying, hit-laden performance.

DStv Saga: ‘Removing Akwaaba Magic could hurt Ghana’s film industry’ – Gloria Sarfo

He didn’t just perform; he conducted a symphony of chaos and joy. From the opening bars of the anthemic “Grind Day (Remix)”, the crowd erupted into a single, moving organism. He took them on a visceral journey through his discography, weaving tales of struggle and success with tracks like “Don’t Keep Me Waiting” and “Victory”.

Each song was a trigger, unleashing waves of ecstatic dancing that lasted from the first chord to the very last.

Arthur’s stage presence was hypnotic. He moved with a rhythmic precision, often pausing to lock eyes with adoring fans, sharing a moment of pure connection before diving back into the frenzy.

His voice, a distinctive blend of melodic flow and razor-sharp rap delivery, cut through the night air, and the crowd roared every word back to him, a testament to his deep connection with his audience.

When the final notes of what was supposed to be the last song faded, the arena refused to let him go. The deafening, unified chant of “Encore! En-cooore!” was not a request but a demand — a primal need for the magic to continue. Kwesi Arthur, feeding off their insatiable energy, returned to the stage with a grin, delivering one final, explosive medley that sealed the night’s legendary status.

As the crowds spilled out into the Wassa Nkonya streets in the early hours of the morning, drenched in sweat and buzzing with adrenaline, the reviews were unanimous.

“We have never seen anything like this here,” exclaimed Ama Serwaa, a local teacher, her face still beaming with joy. “For Spyy Entertainment to bring an artist of his caliber to our community… it’s unbelievable. Every cedi was worth it. This is exactly what we needed.”

Another reveler, a businessman Ernest Amo, echoed the sentiment. “Kwesi Arthur didn’t come to perform; he came to give us an experience. SPYY Entertainment has set a new standard. This ‘FIESTA’ was more than a concert; it was a statement.”

SPYY Entertainment, has proved that world-class entertainment knows no zip code. By bringing a top-tier, critically acclaimed artist like Kwesi Arthur — a man consistently rated as one of the most influential voices of his generation — to the heart of Wassa Nkonya, they didn’t just throw a party. They sparked a movement, proving that the pulse of Ghana’s vibrant music scene beats strongest when it resonates in the very communities that inspire it.

The echoes of the FIESTA have faded, but the memory burns bright. Wassa Nkonya was treated to a masterclass, and the message is clear: when SPYY Entertainment promises a treat, they deliver nothing less than pure, unadulterated magic.

‘IMF, World Bank share blame for Ghana’s currency problems’ – Martin Kpebu

0

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has placed part of the blame for Ghana’s currency challenges on the Bretton Woods institutions, the IMF and World Bank.

Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points on September 13, 2025, he argued that the Bank of Ghana (BoG) must continue intervening in the local currency market, even after the current International Monetary Fund (IMF) program concludes.

Kpebu’s comments came in response to fellow panelist Professor Godfred Bokpin and amid ongoing discussions about managing the cedi-dollar exchange rate.

He insisted that currency intervention is a long-standing and necessary practice for nations, citing the historical US-China currency wars as a prime example.

He explained that China consistently fixed its currency over two decades to make its exports cheaper and become a global economic force, a strategy that ultimately led the US to accumulate significant debt to China.

“As for intervention, as I’ve said, I’ve grown to appreciate it over two decades or so,” he remarked, drawing on his experience from business school.

Ghana ranks 5th in Africa for IMF debt

The lawyer also sharply criticised the IMF and World Bank, contending that these international bodies are “part of the problem” due to a lack of accountability in their programs.

“The IMF can complain from time to time, but truth be told, beyond this whole IMF checking fiscal discipline, they are also part of the problem. The IMF and World Bank have always been part of the problem due to laxity in holding leadership accountable,” he said.

Kpebu explained that despite the appearance of addressing root causes, the political dynamics within these institutions often lead them to “scratch the surface” without enforcing real accountability.

Here’s IMF’s latest projection of Ghana’s total debt stock by end of 2025

As a result, he argued, their structural adjustment programs fail to achieve the desired results, while the institutions continue to profit from developing nations.

Kpebu’s comments reflect a growing sentiment that, while IMF and World Bank programs are intended to foster fiscal discipline, they often do not fully address the systemic issues that lead to economic instability.

Much of the early attention in the game between West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspurs was on Mohammed Kudus, who saw plenty of the ball and had an early shot blocked while being the target of boos and chants from his former supporters.

After a keenly contested first 45 minutes of the game, Tottenham Hotspurs got their breakthrough in the 47th minute through Pape Matar Sarr.

The floodgates were however opened 7 minutes later after Thomas Souček was sent off for his serious foul on Joao Palinha.

Anti-apartheid hero’s new inquest should lead to justice, Biko family tells BBC

0

Steve Biko formed the Black Consciousness Movement as a student in apartheid South Africa Steve Biko formed the Black Consciousness Movement as a student in apartheid South Africa

A son of prominent South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko has told the BBC the family is confident a new inquest into his death 48 years ago will lead to the prosecution of those responsible.

Seen as a martyr in the struggle against white-minority rule, the Black Consciousness Movement founder died from a brain injury aged 30 almost a month after being arrested at a roadblock.

Police at the time said he had banged his head against a wall, but after apartheid ended in 1994, former officers admitted to assaulting him – although no one has been prosecuted.

Nkosinathi Biko, who was six when his father died, said the country could not move forward without addressing its violent past.

“It’s very clear in our minds as to what happened and how they killed Steve Biko,” he told the BBC after the first hearing was held at the High Court in the southern city of Gqeberha – on the 48th anniversary of his father’s death.

It is alleged that Biko, who had been subject to a “banning order” that restricted his movements and other activities at the time of his arrest in 1977, was tortured by five policemen while in detention.

“What is required from this process is simply to follow the facts, and we have no doubt that a democratic court, in a democratic state, will find that Steve Biko’s murder was an act, orchestrated and executed by those who were with him – the five policemen who are implicated in this case,” his son said.

On Friday, the judge heard that two people linked to the case remain alive, both now in their 80s.

Biko’s death caused outrage in South Africa and was the subject of the 1987 Hollywood film Cry Freedom, starring Denzel Washington.

He had been a medical student at the University of Natal when he founded the Black Consciousness Movement, aimed at empowering and mobilising the urban black population.

He was determined to combat the psychological inferiority that many black South Africans felt after years of white-minority rule and at a time when anti-apartheid activists like Nelson Mandela had been silenced and incarcerated by the regime.

The new inquest comes five months after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a judicial inquiry into allegations of political interference in the prosecution of apartheid-era crimes.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), set up in 1996, uncovered apartheid-era atrocities like murder and torture, but few of these cases progressed to trial.

Biko’s case was heard at the TRC, which is where the policemen involved admitted to having made false statements 20 years earlier, but they were not prosecuted.

“Accountability for our violent, brutal past is something that has evaded South African society,” said Nkosinathi Biko.

“You cannot have the trauma that we had, the flow of blood in the streets orchestrated by a state against a people, and then you emerge with less than a handful of prosecutions ever being successfully made.”

He said families who felt let down by the lack of prosecutions that had been recommended by the TRC had continued to pressure the government for justice.

“You can’t give root to a democracy without dealing with some of the historical issues decisively,” he said.

The case was adjourned until 12 November.

The Timeless Duo in Modern Fashion

The combination of a crop top and skirt has remained a beloved staple in the fashion world, celebrated for its simplicity, versatility, and effortlessly chic appeal. Whether gracing casual street scenes or making a statement on the red carpet, this pairing adapts seamlessly to different occasions, body types, and personal styles.

A crop top—characterized by its shorter length that reveals the midriff—infuses outfits with a youthful, contemporary energy. When teamed with a skirt, whether mini, midi, or maxi, the ensemble achieves a harmonious balance of style and sophistication. High-waisted skirts, in particular, are a favorite companion, as they highlight the waistline while maintaining a fashionable yet modest appearance.

Ideal for warm weather and outdoor gatherings, the crop top and skirt combination thrives in lightweight fabrics such as cotton, chiffon, or jersey, offering comfort and breathability. For evening events or parties, more structured materials like satin, sequins, or leather elevate the look, creating a striking and glamorous outfit. Style variations abound—from fitted pencil skirts paired with tailored crop tops for a sleek, modern silhouette, to flared skirts with off-shoulder or tie-front tops for a playful, flirty vibe.

Beyond visual appeal, this duo encourages creative expression. Coordinated matching sets exude polish and cohesion, while mixing prints, textures, and colors allows individuals to showcase personality and originality. I Will Rate Mahama’s Performance 2/10 – Adu Safowaah

0

Adu Safowaah

GHANAIAN ACTRESS and event organiser, Regina Adu Safowaah, has stated that she’s not impressed with the current state of governance under President John Dramani Mahama.

Adu Safowaah, in an interview, stated that comparing former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s first eight months in office to the current John Mahama’s administration, there is more room for improvement, hence she will score the latter 2/10.

“I’m not going to lie, on a scale of 1 to 10 l will score him 2/10 for now. I have not seen anything he’s doing, probably have not paid much attention to it. But honestly, l have not heard anything extreme he has done that has received massive applause as compared to Nana Akufo-Addo’s Free Senior High School (FSHS) programme. You will mostly hear the current government has reduced the dollar sale to some extent but nothing huge,” she said.

Many have argued that former President Akufo-Addo will forever be remembered for his bold policies which include the implementation of the Free SHS policy, increasing access to secondary education, as well as the launch of Planting for Food and Jobs initiative to boost agricultural productivity and food security among others.

On the other hand, President Mahama, following his swearing-in, has faced criticism, particularly after the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.

Minority criticises government over alleged US deportee deal, calls it unconstitutional

0

By Elsie Appiah-Osei, GNA

Accra, Sept. 13, GNA – The Minority Caucus on the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament has criticised the government, over an alleged agreement with the United States for Ghana to serve as a receiving point for West African nationals deported from America.

Reports indicate that 14 such deportees have already been admitted into the country under the arrangement.

In a statement signed by Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Ranking Member on the Committee, and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Saturday said, “The Minority describes the move as a ‘grave constitutional breach’ and a direct affront to Ghana’s sovereignty and foreign policy.”

It said: “Article 75 of our Constitution is clear that any treaty, agreement, or convention executed by or under the authority of the President must be laid before Parliament and ratified. It is surprising that this government has chosen to ignore this constitutional requirement.”

The statement drew parallels with the controversial 2016 case in which the Mahama administration admitted two Yemeni terror suspects from Guantanamo Bay without parliamentary approval, a decision later ruled as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

“Beyond this blatant Constitutional breach, the agreement raises pressing concerns of sovereignty, security, and policy,” it warned.

The statement further argued that the arrangement risked undermining Ghana’s long-standing foreign policy principles, adding that “Ghana has built a proud reputation for principled diplomacy rooted in non-alignment, regional solidarity, and respect for human rights.

“To associate Ghana with the United States’ harsh immigration enforcement regime could damage our international standing,” it noted.

It therefore called for the immediate suspension of the agreement until it had been laid before Parliament for ratification.

“We demand that the government provide full clarity on when this agreement was reached, the safeguards in place, and the broader implications of receiving these deportees.”

The statement said no future agreements of such nature must ever be implemented without prior parliamentary approval.

NPP Calls For Chief Azorka, Alhaji Wahab’s Arrest

Chief Azorka threatening Masawudu (L)

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to immediately arrest and prosecute the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) First National Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, and the party’s Abuakwa North Constituency Communications Officer, Alhaji Abdul Wahab Amadu, over alleged death threats and violent attacks.

According to the NPP, both men, together with their accomplices captured in widely circulated videos, must face the law for their conduct, which it described as reckless and dangerous to the peace and security of the country.

In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party alleged that Chief Azorka and Alhaji Wahab issued death threats against the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin; National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye; and Nsawam-Adoagyiri Member of Parliament, Frank Annoh-Dompreh.

The statement further accused Chief Azorka and a group of his “notorious hoodlums” of physically assaulting the NPP’s Third National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, during the Akwatia by-election.

The party insisted that such actions by national and constituency officers of the ruling NDC not only undermine the country’s democratic gains but also risk escalating insecurity at a time when the nation has slipped in the Global Peace Index rankings.

“The recklessness of the actions of Chief Sofo Azorka and Alhaji Abdul Wahab ought to be properly investigated and punished,” the NPP stressed.

The party indicated it would formally lodge complaints with the police against the individuals involved, urging swift action to demonstrate the state’s commitment to law and order.

Armed robbers attack Kumasi-bound bus, rob 20 passengers at gunpoint

0

At least 20 passengers were robbed at gunpoint in a Sprinter bus with registration number GG 4181-16, which was traveling to Kumasi on the Sunyani road in the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Friday, September 12, 2025, between Tweapease and Mfensi, near the Moments of Glory Prayer Army (MOGPA).

A passenger who was on board the bus and among those robbed said the armed men, numbering 5, blocked the road and ordered passengers to surrender their belongings, including money, mobile phones, and other valuables. No casualties have been reported, but the victims were left severely traumatised.

Residents and commuters have long complained about the deplorable state of that stretch of road, which they believe contributes to the increasing spate of robberies in the area.

Effah Samuel, one of the passengers, confirmed the incident to Citi News.

I’ll never condone assault on journalists – Mahama

0

President John Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to press freedom, stressing that he will never condone attacks on journalists in any form.

Addressing journalists at the Presidential Media Encounter at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, Mr. Mahama condemned the growing incidents of harassment of media practitioners, particularly by security personnel at public events.

“I’ve condemned assaults on journalists in any form. Journalists are doing their job, and their job is to bring news to the doorsteps of our people and to inform, educate and entertain them,” he said.

The President noted with concern that some security officers have developed a “passion” for harassing journalists. He stressed that this culture must end through a combination of education, sanctions, and stronger collaboration between the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the security services.

“It’s a matter of sanctioning people who assault journalists. I’ve been speaking with the President of the GJA, and we’re going to bring them together with the security agencies so they can carry out awareness among their personnel. If you see a journalist at an event, he is also doing a job, just like the security officer is doing his job. You don’t have the right to assault or manhandle them,” Mr. Mahama emphasized.

The President assured that his government will continue to work closely with media stakeholders to ensure journalists can operate in a safe and supportive environment.

“As a lifetime member of the GJA, there’s no way I’ll condone the assault of journalists in any form,” he added.

Ghana Launches Groundbreaking All-Female Music Festival

Ghana’s music industry reached a historic milestone Thursday with the official launch of She Rhythms Festival, the nation’s first all-female music festival designed to address gender imbalances in the entertainment sector.

The three-day festival scheduled December 4-6, 2025, at Alliance Française represents a collaboration between the Musicians Union of Ghana and Alliance Française Accra, creating what organizers describe as a transformative platform for women in music.

MUSIGA President Bessa Simons emphasized the urgent need for equal recognition and opportunities for women during the launch ceremony, which featured performances by gospel sensation Celestine Donkor, dancehall artist Aklerh, and rising star Maya Blu.

RAM Media CEO Augustine Mark described the initiative as “a platinum platform for women to showcase their talent, build networks, and connect with the global stage”, highlighting the festival’s international ambitions for Ghanaian female artists.

The launch event at Alliance Française showcased diverse musical talents, including American fusion artist Kim Poole and Ghana’s Efya, who serves as the festival’s official ambassador. DJ Nyce demonstrated female excellence in the disc jockey profession, while traditional group Amamre celebrated Ghanaian cultural heritage.

Chairperson Nana Adwoa Awindor outlined the festival’s vision to celebrate and amplify female musicians’ voices, addressing longstanding gender disparities in Ghana’s music industry. The initiative comes amid growing recognition that women face significant barriers in accessing performance opportunities, industry networks, and international exposure.

Distinguished attendees included former MUSIGA President Diana Hopeson, Professor Esi Sutherland Addy, and industry executives representing various music organizations. Their presence demonstrated broad institutional support for advancing women’s roles in entertainment.

The festival’s theme “Empowering Her Voice, Amplifying Her Art, Reshaping” reflects its mission to create lasting change rather than merely providing temporary performance opportunities for female artists.

Key industry figures shared encouraging remarks about the initiative’s potential impact, with representatives from Ghana Tourism Authority, Ghana Cultural Forum, National Film Board, and Charterhouse expressing institutional backing for the groundbreaking event.

The ceremony concluded with Abena Ruthy, MUSIGA’s 2nd Vice President and Gender Desk head, reiterating the union’s commitment to championing gender equity throughout the music industry. Her remarks underscored the festival’s role as catalyst for broader structural changes.

Beyond performances, She Rhythms promises mentorship opportunities, collaborative sessions, and networking platforms designed to build sustainable career pathways for female musicians. The comprehensive approach addresses both immediate visibility needs and long-term industry transformation.

The festival represents a significant step in Ghana’s entertainment evolution, potentially inspiring similar initiatives across West Africa where gender disparities persist in creative industries. Its success could establish precedents for women-focused cultural programming regionally.

MC Doreen Avio of Hitz FM guided the evening’s proceedings, while the ceremonial cake-cutting symbolized the official commencement of this transformative musical journey for Ghanaian women in entertainment.
