Don’t turn around to cry when delegates vote against you – Miracles Aboagye to Agyapong’s team

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a former Director of Communications for Dr Bawumia’s 2024 campaign, has strongly condemned remarks made by some members of the camp of former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, against Dr Bawumia, who is also eyeing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership slot.

Speaking on Okay FM on Monday, June 9, 2025, Aboagye expressed his disgust over some of the comments, particularly remarks made by Kennedy Agyapong, stating that the approach taken by these individuals does not promote unity but rather fosters divisiveness.

He also denied claims made by Kwasi Kwarteng, spokesperson for Kennedy Agyapong, that the recently concluded “Thank You Tour”, led by the party’s leadership and Dr Bawumia, was a disguised campaign to promote their preferred candidate to voters.

“It is not in the nature of our party to wash our dirty linens in public or engage in politics of insults. It is not true that the Thank You Tour we just concluded was a campaign. All the national executives of the party participated in the tour, so, how can one say that it was a campaign?”, he said on Okay FM.

Miracles Aboagye went on to warn members of Kennedy Agyapong’s camp that their remarks could ultimately affect their political chances in the primaries, cautioning them not to play the victim if things don’t go their way.

He added that the party’s delegates are discerning enough to vote not based on tribal politics but on the character and competency of those vying for the flagbearer position.

“If you go around making such claims and people vote against you, don’t turn around to play victim because the NPP delegates know their party very well. They won’t just vote based on some disparaging and insulting remarks but based on character and who can lead the party.

“Dr Bawumia has never been heard talking badly about someone just to win votes, so why would they do that? This is the same approach they took that caused them to lose the 2023 NPP primaries,” he stated.

The 2024 presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party, Kennedy Agyapong has been trending over the weekend following a viral video where he had met what looked like his supporters and pitching himself for flagbearer of the party in the 2028 elections.

In the video, Kennedy insinuated that the church voted against the 2024 flagbearer of the party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, perhaps on religious grounds and asked the supporters to elect him.

“In this church we are in, they spoke. I am speaking in parables . The church spoke but we did not listen and we have seen what has happened.”

“If they want power, Ghanaians say it is only Kennedy Agyapong they will vote for.”

“Do you want to remain home for another 4 years or 8 years? Are you ready for that? Let us listen to what the people are saying. Let us listen to what Ghanaians are saying”, he said on the viral video.

But Kennedy Agyapong’s comments seem to have backfired on him, hence attracting condemnation with social media users labeling his character to reek of hypocrisy.

Some critics have accused him of working against Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party in the 2024 elections.

In the wake of the current happenings within the NPP, several videos of Kennedy Agyapong making disparaging statements about the party which resulted in their defeat in the 2024 elections have popped up.

Serving as a flashback, Mr Agyapong was heard on the video vigorously campaigning against his own party.

He said; “The situation we are in now, Ghanaians don’t need change; change needs Ghanaians. Yes, Ghanaians don’t need change, change needs us.”

Further calling for a change of government, in an interview with KSM, Kennedy Agyapong added; “It means that we’ve gone past change. The situation is worse that the change itself is now saying that please come and let me change you.”

Danish Ambassador urges Ghana to unlock untapped potential through accountability, vision

0

By James Amoh Junior, GNA

Accra, June 7, GNA – Danish Ambassador to Ghana, Tom Nørring, has urged Ghana to rise to its full potential by deepening transparency, strengthening accountability, and committing to bold, visionary leadership.

Speaking at a diplomatic reception in Accra to mark the 176th anniversary of Denmark’s Constitution, Amb. Nørring said while Ghana was endowed with abundant natural resources, fertile land, and a vibrant, youthful population, much of its promise remained unrealized due to persistent governance challenges.

“I will start out by saying from my heart that it’s been an incredible experience to be an ambassador here in the land of what I call gold and honey,” Ambassador Nørring said.

He emphasised: “The abundance of natural resources, fertile grounds and youthful and talented human capital in this country is striking. But I must also admit that over the last five years it has saddened me a lot to see Ghana’s vast potential remaining untapped.”

The Ambassador, whose tour of duty in Ghana is coming to an end, expressed concern that the wealth of the country was often enjoyed by only a privileged few.

His comments marked a reflective and forward-looking close to his five-year tenure in Ghana, during which Denmark has deepened its engagement with Ghana through initiatives in climate action, maritime cooperation, water and sanitation, and regional security.

He stressed that any meaningful national transformation would require an honest confrontation of the systemic issues undermining growth, particularly corruption and weak accountability structures.

“And it has maybe saddened me even more that the richness in gold and honey, as I said, is only felt by the privileged few,” he added.

Amb. Nørring stated, “I do wish to commend the new government in its recent steps to improve transparency and public accountability and its willingness to confront these challenges upfront and in the open.”

He lauded the recent efforts by Ghana’s leadership to acknowledge these structural problems publicly, describing the initiative as “painful and unpopular” but also as “extremely important.”

“If translated into action, these steps can pave the way for deeper trust between leaders and citizens and a society better rooted in fairness and equity,” Amb. Nørring noted.

He said, “It is my sincere hope that Ghana’s leaders, current and future, will have the necessary vision, courage and resolve to tackle the pending issues and unlock the full potential of this great nation.”

Beyond policy, Amb. Nørring emphasized the power of equal partnerships between nations, and called for even strengthen cooperation.

He praised Ghana’s consistent alignment with international democratic values and noted the importance of peer-to-peer collaboration in solving regional and global challenges.

Mr John Dumelo, the Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, representing the Government of Ghana, echoed the call for stronger democratic values and mutual cooperation.

He praised Denmark for being a true partner in development, noting the country’s focus on capacity building, transparency, and equal partnerships.

“Our partnership, built on mutual admiration and shared goals, has flourished over the years,” he stated.

He said: “From climate resilience to maritime security, from agriculture to waste management — our cooperation is grounded in shared purpose and mutual respect.”

Mr Dumelo, also the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogo Constituency, highlighted the donation of a full-mission bridge simulator to the Ghana Navy – a symbol of Denmark’s commitment to peer-to-peer support and technical advancement.

On behalf of President John Mahama and the people of Ghana, the Deputy Minister extended gratitude to Ambassador Nørring for his five years of dedicated service.

“Your legacy is one of integrity, genuine friendship and results-driven diplomacy,” he said.

Karpowership Plants 3,000 Trees –

Karpowership Ghana, a power generating company says it is committed to environmental sustainability and the protection of Ghana’s natural resources.

To this end, the company, in partnership with the Sekondi Naval Base and Forestry Commission, has planted 3,000 tree seedlings.

The initiative, which was to commemorate this year’s World Environmental Day, was on the theme, “Restoring Degraded  Landscapes.”

Out of the 3,000 seedlings, 100 of them were planted at the Sekondi Naval Base, which houses the Karpowership.

The remaining seedlings were planted in degraded forest reserves and galamsey sites in the region, to help restore those areas.

The company has since 2021 planted 11,000 tree seedlings in Greater Accra and the Western regions in support of the country’s reforestation efforts.

Ms. Sandra Amarquaye, Communication Manager at Karpowership, said the initiative showed Karpowership’s commitment to  environmental sustainability.

She said the move was not only about planting trees, but cultivating a culture of protecting the environment.

“Hence the company decided to support government’s ‘Tree for Life’ Initiative with 3,000 trees to degraded forest reserves,” she added.

Mr. Joseph Nelson, the Western Regional Minister, said the government was committed to the Tree for Life Initiative.

“We will do everything in our capacity to restore and reclaim all degraded forest lands across the country,” he stated.

Commodore Samuel Ayelazono, Flag Officer Commanding the Western Naval Command, praised Karpowership Ghana for showing commitment to sustaining the Tree or Life Initiative.

He said the command was committed to ensure a green and safe environment, and pledged that his outfit would nurture the seedlings to grow into beautiful trees to protect the environment.

Mr. Elikam Kotoko, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, stated that though most forest reserves have been degraded by the activities of illegal miners, there was still hope since the degraded lands could be reclaimed.

He, therefore, called on all stakeholders to help sustain the Tree for Life Initiative, and advocated the formation of forest clubs and forest festivals, which would attract tourists to the country.

“The Forestry Commission remain committed in advancing afforestation, reforestation and restoration initiatives across the country,” he added.

Court remands NPP sympathiser over alleged assault of Multimedia reporter

0

An Accra court has remanded Theophilus Thompson, a known sympathiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), into custody after he pleaded not guilty to charges of assaulting journalist Latif Iddrisu of Multimedia Group.

The incident occurred on May 27, 2025, around 7:00 p.m. during a protest staged in front of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra. The demonstration, involving some Members of Parliament and NPP supporters, was in response to the arrest of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The police announced in a statement on June 8 that Thompson, 55, was arrested on Saturday, June 7, at about 5:00 p.m. in James Town.

At his arraignment on Monday, June 9, Thompson denied the charges. His defence counsel argued that he is not a flight risk, has a fixed place of residence, and should therefore be granted bail. Citing section 97(4) of Act 30, the lawyer emphasised that “the court shall not refuse or withdraw bail merely as a form of punishment.”

However, the State Attorney opposed the bail request, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation and the fact that other suspects remain at large. She expressed concern that granting bail could compromise the collection of evidence or enable interference with witnesses.

The defence countered that the prosecution had not presented any proof to substantiate claims of possible interference by the accused.

The court ultimately sided with the prosecution, denying bail and remanding Thompson into custody. The case has been adjourned to June 18, 2025.

The courtroom was packed with NPP leadership, including National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) and National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha, who attended the hearing to show their support.

Teachers threaten strike over delayed book and research allowance

Three teacher unions have threatened to go on strike over a delayed payment of book and research allowance.

According to the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) the government has failed to release the foreign exchange rate based on which the book and research allowances are to based on and paid.

In a joint press statement dated Monday, June 9, the unions expressed frustration over what they described as an “undue delay” undermining their academic work and said they will declare a strike if the government fail to release the exchange rate and pay the allowance.

They argued that the lack of clarity around the exchange rate for this year’s allowance — which supports lecturers’ research and professional development — had caused significant uncertainty and hardship for their members.

According to them following a joint meeting on June 8, the unions resolved that the government must urgently release the exchange rate and commence payments. They further warned that they would not accept any extension of payments beyond September 2025.

“We stress that this allowance is a statutory entitlement under our Conditions of Service and an essential resource for advancing research, teaching, and knowledge sharing,” the unions said.

The statement added: “We hereby notify all stakeholders that if the government fails to commence the payment process by 13 June 2025, this will be considered a strike notice by UTAG, TUTAG, and CETAG across all campuses.”

The unions urged the government to act swiftly to avoid disrupting the academic calendar and to safeguard the welfare of teachers and the wider academic community.

The book and research allowance, typically paid in foreign currency, helps lecturers fund the purchase of books, journals, and other research materials. Delays in setting the applicable exchange rate — particularly during periods of currency volatility — can significantly reduce the allowance’s value.

Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo regions flagged as examination malpractice hotspots — WAEC

File photo of students taking an exam File photo of students taking an exam

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has raised concerns over a surge in examination malpractice across Ghana, with urgent calls for stricter oversight and collaboration among educational stakeholders.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum, WAEC officials described the situation as increasingly dire, warning that continued inaction could damage the credibility of Ghana’s education system and the value of its certificates.

According to Daniel Nii Dodoo, Head of Humanities at WAEC’s Test Division, data from recent years point to a growing concentration of malpractices in certain regions.

“Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo regions had the highest number of candidates with malpractice cases — 18,504 in 2023. These are critical areas requiring immediate attention, given their rising trend in malpractice involvement,” he stated.

While emphasising that the regional data is not meant to stigmatise, WAEC insists it would inform targeted interventions and improve examination oversight in identified hotspots.

The Ashanti Region was also named as an area of growing concern.

The Council warned that the integrity of Ghana’s education system is at stake, and that failure to curb the trend could result in long-term consequences, including international skepticism over the authenticity of Ghanaian academic credentials.

WAEC is now calling for enhanced cooperation from the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, school heads, and local authorities to strengthen supervision and enforce strict compliance with examination regulations.

The Council insists that immediate and collaborative actions are necessary to restore public confidence and protect the country’s academic integrity.

You leave Hearts of Oak and support Arsenal, Real Madrid – Ouattara slams fans

Aboubakar Ouattara is the head coach of Hearts of Oak Aboubakar Ouattara is the head coach of Hearts of Oak

Hearts of Oak head coach, Aboubakar Ouattara, has criticised some of the club’s supporters for prioritising European clubs over their team, despite Hearts ending the season on a positive note.

The Phobians secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Samartex on the final day of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, June 8, 2025.

Konadu Yiadom scored the only goal early in the second half to seal all three points, extending Hearts’ unbeaten run to six matches, three wins and three draws.

The result saw Hearts finish level on points with arch-rivals Asante Kotoko, who suffered a 3-1 defeat to Vision FC.

However, the Phobians still ended the season five points behind league champions Bibiani GoldStars and failed to secure a top four spot.

Speaking after the match, Ouattara hit back at his critics and expressed his disappointment with fans who, in his view, failed to support the team when it mattered most.

“Now I am popular in Ghana because if you are listening to the radio, it’s Ouattara staying or leaving discussions. You leave Hearts of Oak and support Arsenal, Real Madrid and Barcelona,” he said.

Hearts of Oak was tipped to challenge for the title this season after narrowly avoiding relegation last year.

However, inconsistency, disjointed performances, and growing fan unrest disrupted their campaign.

Despite finishing strong, Ouattara’s future remains uncertain, with speculation growing that he may not remain in charge next season.

Kenya police chief suspended over death of man in custody for online post

Albert Ojwang has been described in reports as a teacher and a blogger Albert Ojwang has been described in reports as a teacher and a blogger

Kenya’s police chief has suspended the head of a police station and all officers who were on duty when a man who had been detained for “false publication” died in custody.

Albert Ojwang was arrested for a post on X in the western town of Homa Bay and then driven 350km (220 miles) to the capital, Nairobi, his father Meshack Opiyo told journalists.

“While in custody, the suspect sustained head injuries after hitting his head against a cell wall,” a police statement said. He was rushed to hospital “where he was pronounced dead on arrival”.

The director of rights group Amnesty International’s Kenya branch told the BBC that the death of Mr Ojwang was “very suspicious”.

Amnesty said in a statement that the death of the young man, described as a teacher and blogger, “raises serious questions that must be urgently, thoroughly, and independently investigated”.

Senior police officer Stephen Okal is quoted by the Star newspaper as saying what happened in the cell was “an attempted suicide”.

It is not clear what the charge of “false publication” referred to, but Mr Opiyo told online news site Citizen Digital that the arresting police officer said “Albert had insulted a senior person on X”, the social media platform.

A police statement said officers were suspended to allow Kenya’s independent oversight body to conduct an “impartial investigation”.

Speaking at a press conference, police chief Douglas Kanja said the police would give the investigators all “necessary support” to resolve the case.

He said Mr Ojwang was arrested in Homa Bay on Friday, then transferred to Nairobi for questioning and booked at the police station on Saturday.

According the police chief, Mr Ojwang was found unconscious during a routine inspection of the cells, and was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

He said the arrest had been prompted by a complaint by deputy police chief Eliud Lagat “about his name being tarnished”.

“It was on that basis that investigations were actually being carried out,” the police chief added.

The head of the Independent Police Oversight Commission (Ipoa), Ahmed Isaack Hassan, has said they will do “everything to ensure justice is served for the family and for all Kenyans”.

Mr Hassan, who attended the press conference, called on officers not to interfere with the investigations.

A post-mortem examination was scheduled to be carried out on Monday.

The death of Mr Ojwang, who was reported to have been 31, has sparked outrage online and calls for protests to demand police accountability.

Referring to the circumstances of his arrest, Amnesty Kenya director Irungu Houghton said it was “quite shocking” that Mr Ojwang was not booked in at the local police station after being detained, but was instead taken on a long journey.

He called on the independent investigators to secure what he described as “the crime scene” at the police station in Nairobi.

Ojwang’s detention and death comes at a time of rising concern about how some government critics are being treated.

Last week, software developer Rose Njeri – who created a tool to help people oppose a government finance bill – was charged with violating a cybercrime law.

“They Said He Should Unseat Me’

0

Dr. S K Nuamah, a former Member of Parliament for Kwadaso on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ticket, has made serious allegations about a politically charged scheme that led to his removal from office as reported by Ghana Web.

In a recent interview with Oyerepa TV, Nuamah accused Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, of orchestrating his ousting.

Nuamah claims Wontumi openly told him he had been given instructions to unseat him as the parliamentary candidate.

“Our chairman Wontumi told me, right in front of me, that they said he should unseat me, so he will make sure he does,” Nuamah recalled.

He also spoke about an apology he was instructed to offer to Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, then Minister of Food and Agriculture, without being told what he had done wrong.

This demand, he suggested, was a major turning point in his political downfall. “He was like I should go and apologise to Afriyie Akoto, and I didn’t even know my offence,” he said.

Dr. Nuamah went on to reveal that there were discrepancies in the electoral process ahead of the NPP’s parliamentary primary.

He described how the delegates’ album used in the constituency executives’ election was changed just before the parliamentary election, despite his protests.

In addition, he claimed that the judge who heard his case in court was intimidated into ruling against him. “They called the judge to warn him, so he was under coercion to deliver the verdict without looking at the issue at hand,” he alleged.

Nuamah also admitted that the NPP had significant internal flaws. “Let us talk about our sins,” he concluded.

New Force suspends Cheddar’s bodyguard over assault at Mampong funeral

0

The New Force Movement has announced the immediate suspension of Adu Acheampong, a member of its presidential candidate’s private security team, following an assault incident captured on video during a recent funeral event.

Acheampong, popularly known as “Seven,” was seen delivering a heavy punch to a man who was repeatedly attempting to approach the New Force candidate, Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Chaddar, during the burial rites of the late Mamponghene and Krontihene of Asanteman, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, on June 7, 2025.

In a press release signed by the movement’s General Secretary, Charles Yomekpe, the leadership confirmed that Acheampong had used “unjustifiable force” against a supporter who was merely trying to engage with the presidential candidate.

The New Force described the incident as “regrettable” and said it is treating the matter with the “utmost seriousness.”

A full internal investigation has been launched to review the conduct and determine appropriate disciplinary measures. Acheampong will remain suspended while the investigation is underway.

In the meantime, he has been enrolled in a comprehensive anger management programme to address the behaviour exhibited and help prevent any future recurrence.

“Our movement is founded on respect, engagement, and peaceful democratic participation,” the statement emphasised.

Meanwhile, Mr Acheampong has offered an unqualified apology to the victim of the attack.

Agribusiness can transform Ghana’s economy – Agri-Impact CEO

0

The Chief Executive Officer of Agri-Impact Group, Daniel Fahene Acquaye, has emphasized the transformative potential of agriculture in Ghana’s development agenda, urging greater national investment and interest in the sector.

Speaking during the Citi Business Festival on the theme “Basic Opportunities in the Agricultural Sector,” Mr. Acquaye highlighted agriculture’s unmatched reach and value across the country, stating that its contribution surpasses even some of Ghana’s most celebrated natural resources.

“In the Western Region, you will find crude oil. But in that same Western Region, you will also find cocoa, oil palm, rubber, and coconut,” he said. “Agriculture will take you from Axim to Paga, even further than where gold or salt might not take you.”

He argued that agriculture—spanning crops, livestock, and tree crops—has the potential to generate massive economic benefits and inclusive growth, more than many extractive industries.

“That is why we keep saying that if, as a country, we want to develop, we need to give a lot of attention to agriculture,” he added.

Mr. Acquaye also acknowledged the sector’s public perception challenges, especially among the youth. He explained that the term “agribusiness” is often used to make agriculture more appealing by rebranding it as a modern, viable, and profitable venture.

“Now, people are making the case for agriculture and agribusiness. But it is still agriculture. Because people see agriculture as risky, and young people do not like it, we prefer to use the word ‘agribusiness’, which is more modern and more acceptable,” he noted.

The 2025 Citi Business Festival, powered by Citi FM and Channel One TV, is a month-long initiative dedicated to driving business growth and economic transformation.

It is held in partnership with Absa Bank Ghana and MTN, with sponsorship from Zonda Tec Ghana.

Take advantage of ‘MahamaCares’ – Lordina Mahama to chronic patients

0

First Lady and founder of the Lordina Foundation, Lordina Mahama, has urged persons living with chronic non-communicable diseases to take full advantage of the Mahama Cares health programme when it becomes operational.

Speaking on Saturday, June 7, during the third edition of a free health screening for over 145 retired Assemblies of God ministers and their spouses in Accra, she explained that Mahama Cares, officially known as the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, was designed to fill health service gaps not fully addressed by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

According to her, the initiative will provide consistent care, particularly for chronic conditions, with a strong focus on preventive health at the community level.

The quarterly screening, held at the Ringway Gospel Centre, forms part of a commitment the first lady made in September 2024 to support the health needs of members of the Assemblies of God Retired Ministers and Spouses Association.

Specialists, including urologists, gynaecologists, dietitians, and general practitioners, conducted various medical tests, including blood sugar checks, cancer screening, and prostate examinations and provided medications and lifestyle guidance based on the findings.

She emphasised that this third edition builds on the success of earlier screenings held in November 2024 and March 2025, and reaffirmed her foundation’s dedication to improving the lives of those who have selflessly served others.

She also encouraged attendees to strictly adhere to medical advice and prescriptions received during the screening, noting that long-term health requires sustained effort and attention.

Reverend Dr. Harry Insaidoo, President of the Retired Ministers and Spouses Association, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the initiative, describing it as “one of the most exciting and impactful interventions” for retired clergy.

He praised both Lordina Mahama and President John Mahama for their continued support, while also commending the medical team and church leadership for their cooperation in making the programme a success.

“To us, it was one of the biggest and the most exciting moments for us, as every three months, the doctors will thoroughly examine you, and thereafter, they will give you medication Not only that, they will also offer pieces of advice on how to live a good and healthy life,” he stated.

The Assembly Member for Alajo North Electoral Area, Ibrahim Halidu, has made a passionate pledge to support academic excellence among Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates in his community.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of a free extra classes programme he sponsors annually, Halidu announced that any student from the Alajo North Electoral Area who scores between aggregate 6 and 10 in the upcoming BECE will receive a brand-new laptop.

The gesture, according to Halidu, is aimed at motivating students to aim higher and to also equip them with digital tools that will support their future learning and development.

“I believe in rewarding hard work and encouraging excellence. Any student who attains between aggregate 6 and 10 in this year’s BECE will be given a free laptop to support their academic journey into senior high school and beyond,” he stated to loud applause from students present.

The announcement was made during the final day of the free extra classes organized by Halidu and his team for final-year junior high school students in the electoral area. The free extra classes, which has been running for several years, is part of the Assembly Member’s commitment to improving education outcomes in the community.

Parents and residents have lauded Halidu for his continuous dedication to education and youth development. Many described him as a visionary leader whose interventions have inspired many young people to take their education seriously.

“Every year, Halidu supports our children with free classes and now he’s promising laptops for those who excel. This is the kind of leadership we need,” said Madam Akosua Mensah, a parent whose child benefited from the programme.

Halidu urged the students to remain focused, disciplined, and determined as they prepare for the examination. He also assured the community of his continued support in the area of education and youth empowerment.

The SSNIT land scandal: Beyond a bad deal

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) land acquisition controversy, centered on a $5.45 million purchase of a 1.52-acre plot in Accra in January 2016, is more than just a case of financial mismanagement. It’s a stark symptom of deeper, systemic issues plaguing Ghana’s public institutions, highlighting critical failures in governance, transparency, and accountability.

While the immediate focus is on the questionable transaction itself, the scandal serves as a powerful catalyst for examining and reforming the broader framework that allows such incidents to occur. The very foundation of public trust is at stake, demanding a comprehensive overhaul to ensure the protection of workers’ retirement savings and the integrity of the nation’s institutions.

The details of the land deal are concerning enough. SSNIT’s acquisition of the land from Premier Porfolio Limited (PPL) in January 2016, at a price now widely considered inflated, has triggered a protracted legal battle to recover the funds.

After a protracted legal battle with the Lands Commission (LC), the land was finally plotted in favour of Mr. Nunoo in December 2016, when SSNIT had already parted with the amount to PPL in January, 2016.

Investigations have revealed that Mr. Ernest Nunoo, a real estate developer had obtained rights to the land from the Osu Traditional Council in 2004.

The timeline and circumstances surrounding the purchase raise serious questions about due diligence and the decision-making processes within SSNIT. Why was such a prime piece of land acquired at what appears to be an inflated price? What measures were taken to verify the land’s ownership and value before the transaction? These questions remain largely unanswered, fueling public suspicion and eroding confidence in SSNIT’s management.

However, the true gravity of the situation extends beyond the financial loss. The public’s reaction to the scandal underscores a deep-seated frustration with the perceived double standards within SSNIT and other public institutions. As policy analyst Magnus Kwame Owusu pointed out, the swift and severe punishment meted out to junior employees for minor infractions stands in stark contrast to the apparent lack of accountability for senior officials involved in this multi-million-dollar blunder. This disparity creates a sense of injustice and undermines morale among staff, fostering a culture of cynicism and distrust.

The issue of transparency is equally critical. SSNIT’s reluctance to disclose the identities and roles of the officials involved in the land transaction, citing confidentiality, has only exacerbated public outrage. Labour rights activist Innocencia Yaa Agyemang’s assertion that “the absence of transparency is alarming” reflects a widespread concern that the institution is attempting to shield those responsible from scrutiny. Without transparency, it is impossible to hold individuals accountable for their actions and to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The financial implications of the land deal are significant. As SSNIT itself acknowledged, had the $5.45 million been invested in a diversified portfolio, it could have grown to about GH¢115 million by March 2025, representing a substantial return for the workers whose futures depend on the prudent management of their contributions. The loss of this potential gain highlights the opportunity cost of the ill-fated land deal and underscores the importance of sound investment strategies.

The Auditor-General’s reports have consistently highlighted the need for improved oversight in SSNIT’s real estate investments, which have often been plagued by mismanagement and a lack of proper documentation. The current controversy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of due diligence and ethical decision-making in the handling of public funds. When the guardians of these funds falter, the repercussions ripple through the lives of everyday citizens who rely on these savings for their retirement.

The involvement of the LC in facilitating the sale of the disputed land raises even more troubling questions about the integrity of the land acquisition process in Ghana. The LC’s role in verifying land ownership and ensuring compliance with regulations is crucial, and any perceived complicity in this matter further complicates the landscape. It suggests that the challenges facing SSNIT may extend beyond its own internal governance, requiring a broader examination of the regulatory framework and the institutions responsible for overseeing land transactions.

Experts recommend some steps to address systemic issues and restore public trust in SSNIT. Notable among them are:

Rebuilding trust: Key steps for SSNIT and Ghana’s public institutions

In the wake of the SSNIT land deal controversy, experts and concerned citizens are calling for comprehensive reforms to restore public trust and prevent future incidents of mismanagement. The path forward requires a multi-pronged approach focusing on transparency, accountability, ethical leadership, and systemic improvements.

Openness is paramount

“Transparency is the bedrock of public trust,” says Kwame Addo, a governance expert. “SSNIT must open its books and its processes to public scrutiny.” This means disclosing the details of investment decisions, procurement procedures, and disciplinary actions. Critically, the identities and roles of officials involved in major transactions should be made public, and thorough internal investigations into allegations of wrongdoing must be conducted with findings released to the public. Regular audit reports should also be readily accessible.

Strengthening the watchdogs

A key area for reform is the structure and oversight of SSNIT’s board of directors. Experts argue that the board must be truly independent, composed of competent individuals, and held accountable for its decisions. The board needs to be empowered to effectively oversee management, implement policies that promote ethical behavior, and ensure sound financial management.

Due diligence is non-negotiable

Moving forward, SSNIT must overhaul its due diligence processes for all investments, particularly in real estate. This includes conducting thorough market research, obtaining independent valuations of properties, and rigorously verifying land ownership before any commitment is made. A robust risk management framework is also essential to identify and mitigate potential threats to investments.

Cultivating ethical leadership

Beyond structural changes, a shift in culture is needed. SSNIT must actively foster ethical leadership and a culture of integrity at all levels. This includes comprehensive ethics training for all employees, establishing confidential channels for whistleblowers to report wrongdoing without fear of reprisal, and consistently enforcing strict disciplinary measures against those who violate ethical standards.

Reforming land acquisition

The SSNIT scandal has also shone a spotlight on the need to reform the broader land acquisition process in Ghana. The government must review the regulatory framework to ensure it is transparent, efficient, and equitable. A critical component of this is strengthening the capacity of the Lands Commission to accurately verify land ownership and prevent fraudulent transactions.

Empowering citizens

Finally, a healthy democracy requires an active and informed citizenry. Civil society organizations and the media play a vital role in holding public institutions accountable. The government must ensure these actors can operate freely, scrutinize the actions of public officials, and provide a platform for public discourse on important issues.

By taking these steps, Ghana can begin to rebuild trust in its public institutions and ensure that organizations like SSNIT are truly serving the interests of the people.

The SSNIT land deal controversy is a wake-up call for Ghana. It is an opportunity to address the systemic issues that have allowed such incidents to occur and to build a more transparent, accountable, and ethical public sector. The future of SSNIT, and indeed the future of Ghana’s public institutions, depends on the willingness of stakeholders to embrace comprehensive reform and to prioritize the welfare of the citizens they serve. The time for action is now.

My husband wants to add a second wife

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’m writing with a heavy heart.

My husband and I are traditionally married. Before the marriage, he told me he didn’t want a court (civil) wedding. He gave me the option to accept or decline, and I agreed to go ahead with the traditional marriage, but at no point did we discuss polygamy.

It’s been less than a year since we got married, and now he said he is bringing in a second woman next month. I was shocked. I didn’t agree to it, and now he said, “You knew what you signed up for.”

But how does rejecting a court marriage automatically mean I accepted polygamy? If he had been honest and said he planned to marry multiple women, I would have made my decision with that in mind, but he never did.

Right now, I’m heavily pregnant, almost eight months gone. He said the other woman is also pregnant, and he is going ahead with marrying her next month. He expects me to prepare to welcome her.

He is actively making arrangements, buying items for the ceremony, and yet I’m sitting here feeling like I was tricked. I never signed up for this.

He is even suggesting that if I can’t live peacefully with the second wife, I should leave and raise the child on my own. I feel broken. Betrayed.

It doesn’t end there. I only found out after our marriage that he already has a child with another woman, his baby mama. That discovery was hard, but I forgave him. And now this?

I’ve just been crying. I feel emotionally shattered. I don’t know who to turn to.

Financially, I’m struggling. Despite my condition, he gives me less than GH₵500 a month, to cook, buy necessities, and go for hospital visits. Meanwhile, he clearly has the means, but now I see where his money goes.

I’m deeply unhappy. I never wanted a polygamous marriage, and I certainly don’t want to raise my child in such a situation.

What do I do?

Government misses 34% target as auction undersubscribed

Treasury Bills undersubscribed in its latest auction Treasury Bills undersubscribed in its latest auction

The government’s short-term debt auction saw a deepening undersubscription in the latest issuance falling GH¢2.29 billion short of its GH¢6.66 billion target.

A total of GH¢4.37 billion was raised at the close of the auction, reflecting weakened investor participation and marking a significant dip from last week’s GH¢353 million shortfall.

Investor interest remained firmly anchored on the 91-day bill, which continued to dominate demand.

The government accepted all bids tendered for the 91-day instrument raising GH¢2.65 billion.

Demand for the medium and long-dated tenors remained subdued.

A total of GH¢1.67 billion was accepted for the 182-day bill while the 364-day bill attracted only GH¢48 million both amounts fully allotted by the government.

Yields across the three instruments recorded modest declines, consistent with the Bank of Ghana’s disinflation-focused monetary policy stance.

The 91-day bill held steady at 14.79%, the 182-day bill dipped by 3 basis points to 15.45%, and the 364-day bill fell 12 basis points to 15.79%.

The marginal yield declines point to an improving inflation outlook and a possible easing of short-term funding pressures for the government.

Meanwhile, the upcoming auction under Tender 1958 is targeting GH¢7.58 billion an increase of GH¢919 million over the current week’s target as government ramps up its mobilisation efforts to meet looming maturities.

Congo bans media from covering Kabila and his party

Congo's former president Joseph Kabila leaves after briefing members of the media Congo’s former president Joseph Kabila leaves after briefing members of the media

Congolese authorities have banned local media from covering former president Joseph Kabila and his party PPRD, categorising the two in the same pool as the M23 rebel group.

The decision on Saturday was announced by Christian Bosembe, chairperson of the supervising council for media and communications, known in French as Conseil supérieur de l’audiovisuel et de la communication (CSAC). The Council has sweeping powers to license media outlets and accredit journalists in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Journalists covering activities or comments by Kabila or his Parti du Peuple pour la Reconstruction et la Démocratie (PPRD), or relaying statements or interviews with the former president risk losing their licences.

“From today, journalists and media managers are forbidden to broadcast, comment on or report news linked to the PPRD, or to receive its leaders. It is forbidden to relay comments or interviews with former president Joseph Kabila. This is a major decision… This is not censorship: no rights have been violated. Television must not be used as a forum for subversion.” Bosembe told a Kinshasa radio station.

Bosembe explained that this was a precautionary measure to curtail the moves of Kabila, who has recently aligned with the M23 and its political grouping, Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC).

Kinshasa had already tagged M23 a terrorist movement and forbade media outlets from reporting on their activties.

But the government has gone on to accept peace talks with the M23, mediated by Qatar, an about-turn from months ago, when officials said they wouldn’t negotiate with terror merchants.

The latest CSAC decision is causing uproar, with journalists denouncing it as censorship.

The Union nationale de la presse du Congo (UNPC), the country’s self-regulatory authority for journalists, said: “In order to remain rational and objective, regulation should always be carried out a posteriori and not a priori. Prior regulation is censorship without a name.

Journalists and the media cannot put up with censorship and the resulting inquisition,” read a statement signed by UNPC chairman Kamanda wa Kamanda.

“The right of the public to information and freedom of the press are guaranteed by the Constitution, even if the Union admits that in times of war, restrictions may exist, and these are understandable.”

Kamanda wa Kamanda went on to call on Congolese journalists to “show restraint and serenity in the face of this authoritarian drift towards unilateral regulation.”

He urged journalists to redouble their professionalism in the exercise of their mandate.

Faced with a general outcry, the CSAC chairperson said the policy was meant to reduce “cheering subversion.”

“We have not forbidden you to quote the name of the former president. What we are banning is the glorification of crime,” he said.

The CSAC has also banned Congolese journalists from debating war operations, “unless they have an expert with them in the debate.”

The CSAC chairperson’s precautionary measure came against a backdrop of strong reactions to Kabila’s presence in Goma and to the former president’s latest public speech, in which he harshly criticised his successor, President Félix Tshisekedi, accusing him of “endless intoxication with power”.

The former president’s immunity has been lifted by the Senate, so he could face a trial by military court. His party has also been suspended.

The Minister of the Interior and Security Jacquemain Shabani has applied to the courts to have the party dissolved.

Ghana, UK Discuss Boosting Creative Economy

0

A scene from the meeting

The British Council has engaged the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts in discussions aimed at exploring collaborative opportunities to promote Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.

The meeting marked a significant step towards strengthening partnerships to support the growth of Ghana’s tourism, culture, and creative arts sectors.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Dzifa Gomashie, expressed appreciation to the British Council for its longstanding support of arts and culture in Ghana.

She underscored the need for greater investment in underfunded areas such as gastronomy, craft, dance, and painting, which she noted had significant potential to elevate Ghana’s cultural identity on the global stage.

“Ghana does not lack talent, but we require the correct training to make our creatives marketable and competitive on the world stage,” the minister stated.

She also emphasised the importance of training and professionalising tour guides, ensuring accurate and compelling narratives of Ghana’s history are delivered without distortion.

The minister called for improved consistency and quality in local arts and crafts, urging the development of policies that reshape mindsets and uphold high standards in cultural production.

Leading the British Council delegation, Nii Doodo Dodoo, an International Development Expert, described the engagement as a “homecoming,” recalling his early experiences as a tour guide in Ghana. He noted that the British Council had operated in Ghana for over 80 years, significantly contributing to the arts and culture sectors.

Mr. Dodoo expressed interest in the “Black Star Experience” initiative, recognising its potential in shaping Ghana’s cultural narrative.

“In the UK, tourism contributes close to 16 billion pounds annually, with about one million people employed in the industry. There are immense lessons Ghana can take from such a model,” he observed.

The British Council reaffirmed its commitment to fostering cultural exchange and supporting Ghana’s creative economy through targeted partnerships. Discussions also focused on enhancing the creative arts sector, positioning tourism as a major economic driver, and equipping young artists with entrepreneurial skills to commercialise their talents effectively. Minority Slams Govt Over ‘Dumsor’ Levy

0

Frank Annoh-Dompreh

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has condemned the government’s introduction of a new GH¢1 Energy Sector Recovery Levy, popularly known as ‘Dumsor Levy’, describing it as a “predatory, insensitive, and dishonest” tax that will impose severe hardship on Ghanaians already battling economic pressure.

Addressing the press in Parliament, the Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, said the tax, which adds GH¢1 per litre on fuel, amounts to a betrayal of earlier commitments made by the Finance Minister, Dr. Ato Forson.

He cited the Minister’s assurance in January 2025 that “tariffs will not be used to raise revenue” and that the public would not be made to bear the cost of ECG’s inefficiencies.

“This levy represents a complete and unacceptable reversal of that promise,” Mr. Annoh-Dompreh declared, and asked rhetorically, “What steps has the government taken to address ECG’s inefficiencies? Absolutely none. And now, they want Ghanaians to pay for their failures.”

According to the Minority, the implications of the levy are dire. They estimate that the new tax will extract approximately GH¢475 million from consumers each month – amounting to GH¢5.7 billion annually.

They warned that the cost will be passed on to households and businesses, triggering inflation and weakening the purchasing power of ordinary citizens.

“This is not just another fuel price adjustment. Fuel is central to every sector of the economy. This tax will worsen the cost of living and destroy livelihoods,” the Minority Chief Whip, who is also the MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, stressed.

The Minority also took issue with the justification given by the government – that a recent drop in global fuel prices made the levy feasible. They described the explanation as “simplistic and misleading,” pointing out that global oil prices are volatile and beyond Ghana’s control. They questioned what would happen to the levy if prices were to rise again.

In addition to the economic concerns, the Caucus condemned the manner in which the levy was passed in Parliament – under a certificate of urgency, with limited time for debate.

“This was a midnight robbery. The bill was passed while Ghanaians were sleeping. This is not democratic governance – it is legislative ambush,” Mr. Annoh-Dompreh said.

They also accused the government of hypocrisy, citing the continued provision of free fuel to government appointees.

“If they really believe in burden-sharing, why haven’t they cancelled fuel privileges for ministers and officials?” he asked, and added, “Ghanaians are being made to suffer while government appointees ride for free.”

The Minority further linked the levy to a pattern of broken promises, including the Transport Minister’s appeal for drivers to reduce fares by 15% just weeks before the tax was introduced.

They argued that this move, along with recent increases in electricity and water tariffs, reflects a government disconnected from the plight of the average Ghanaian.

The Minority called for the immediate withdrawal or reduction of the levy, announcing plans to hit the streets with other concerned citizens in protest.

“This is not just about one cedi – it’s about justice, accountability, and the soul of our country,” Mr. Annoh-Dompreh concluded.

Former Assin Central lawmaker and 2028 NPP flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has been captured in a viral video recording making what some netizens have described as “religious rants” against former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Addressing a group of people, Kennedy Agyapong questioned the legitimacy of the return of Dr Bawumia to lead the New Patriotic Party.

Speaking to what appeared to be a section of the NPP grassroots who have thrown their weight behind him, Kennedy Agyapong appealed to the party to elect him in their next internal election.

“If they want power, Ghanaians say it is only Kennedy Agyapong they will vote for.”

“Do you want to remain home for another 4 years or 8 years? Are you ready for that? Let us listen to what the people are saying. Let us listen to what Ghanaians are saying”, he said.

Kennedy Agyapong further exclaimed that “the churches spoke”, purporting Ghanaians are not ready for a non-Christian to lead them.

“In this church we are in, they spoke. I am speaking in parables . The church spoke but we did not listen and we have seen what has happened”, he emphasised.

Meanwhile, a number of social media users have reacted to Agyapong’s comments, finding it to be seditious and divisive.

“This man has nothing good to offer the NPP and Ghana. Anytime he opens his mouth to campaign, his message demonstrates division on religious and tribal lines. This stinks in a country like ours,” a concerned Ghanaian replied on X.

GFA sanctions four Berekum Chelsea players for unsporting behaviour

0

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Disciplinary Committee has sanctioned four Berekum Chelsea players—Mizack Afriyie, Stephen Amankona, Zakaria Fuseini, and Seidu Mohammed—for misconduct during their MTN FA Cup semi-final clash against Asante Kotoko.

According to an official GFA update, the players were each fined GHS 1,000 after being found guilty of unsporting behaviour towards the match officials.

While the fines have been issued, the GFA revealed that they have been suspended for a period of six months, effectively serving as a warning to the players involved.

The statement further emphasized that any recurrence of such misconduct will attract more severe sanctions, potentially including longer bans or heavier fines.

The decision reflects the GFA’s ongoing effort to reinforce discipline and respect for officiating within Ghana football, particularly during high-stakes competitions like the MTN FA Cup.

The association’s firm stance sends a clear message to players and clubs alike that misconduct and disrespect towards referees will not be tolerated, as the league strives to improve its image and integrity.

This latest disciplinary move adds to growing scrutiny over player conduct and officiating standards, especially as the 2024/25 football season approaches its climax.

Investigators claimed she received over $2 million in fraud proceeds, which were funneled through bank accounts in her name.

She was later reportedly bailed under strict conditions, including house arrest in New Jersey and the use of a GPS ankle monitor as the trial proceeded and was subsequently sentenced to 12 months in prison after entering a plea bargain. She was released in May 2025.

Arsenal remain locked in negotiations with Thomas Partey as the Ghanaian midfielder approaches the end of his contract, with less than a month remaining on his current deal.

According to The Mirror, the Gunners tabled what they considered a competitive offer around 10 days ago, but no agreement has been reached so far. Talks continue, with all parties aiming to find a swift resolution before Partey departs for Ghana on June 10.

Partey, who turns 32 next Friday, is reportedly keen to extend his stay at the Emirates. He feels settled in north London and has no immediate desire to leave.

However, with interest from clubs including Barcelona, the player and his representatives are weighing their options carefully.

Sources close to the player suggest Partey sees this next deal as potentially his final major contract. As such, his inner circle is pushing for terms that reflect his continued value to Mikel Arteta’s squad.

The situation remains open, with Partey and his agent, Jose Daniel Jimenez Pozanco, preparing to travel to Ghana for the second edition of the ‘Thomas Partey Tournament’ from June 10–13.

The event, which will feature European scouts observing local talent, underscores Partey’s off-field influence as well.

He is also set to appear at the ‘All Star Festival’ in Accra on June 18.

Last week’s performance, although negative, reflects a moderation in the market’s bearish run compared to the 3.20% loss recorded the week prior.

Contrary to the broader market trend, financial stocks recorded gains, with the GSE Financial Stock Index (GSE-FSI) rising by 0.86% to close at 3,244.82 points.

The financial index now boasts a Year-to-Date (YTD) return of 36.29%, underpinned by renewed investor interest in banking and insurance counters.

Bawumia Jokes With Rival Acheampong at Mamponghene’s Funeral

0

Bryan Acheampong And Bawumia

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia shared a lighthearted moment with political rival Bryan Acheampong during the funeral of Mamponghene in Kumasi over the weekend.

The two NPP figures, both considered potential flagbearer candidates for the 2028 elections, exchanged pleasantries before Bawumia jokingly asked, “You want to worry me?” prompting laughter from both politicians.

The encounter comes amid growing speculation about the NPP’s future leadership. Acheampong, the Abetifi MP, has publicly declared his intention to contest the flagbearership, alongside businessman Kennedy Agyapong. While Bawumia has not formally announced his plans, political observers widely expect him to seek the nomination again after leading the party in the 2024 elections.

Agypong recently argued against giving previous flagbearers another chance, drawing parallels to the party’s treatment of Adu Boahen after poor electoral performance. His comments have added fuel to the emerging leadership debate within the NPP as the party begins positioning itself for the next election cycle.

Political analysts note that such public interactions between potential rivals often carry strategic significance, allowing candidates to demonstrate camaraderie while subtly asserting their positions. The NPP faces the challenge of maintaining unity while navigating what promises to be a competitive internal race ahead of 2028.

Kwaw Kese Blasts Police Over Roadside Search

0

Kwaw Kese

Rapper, Kwaw Kese has spoken out against the Ghana Police Service after he was stopped and searched while using the Spintex Road on Thursday, June 5, 2025.

In a video posted on Instagram, the musician looked upset as he described the incident. He said police officers pulled him over and searched his car for about 30 minutes, looking for weed or illegal drugs.

“You stopped me and searched inside my car hoping to find something to arrest me with. What kind of nonsense is that?” he said in the video.

Kwaw Kese said the search was done in public view and made him feel embarrassed. He believes the officers targeted him because of his past.

In 2014, he was arrested in Kumasi for smoking weed in public. He was jailed for one day and fined GH¢1,200.

Now, he says he has learned from that incident and would never carry drugs, especially in public.

“Why would I disgrace myself by carrying something illegal? Your plan to shame me didn’t work,” he added.

The police are yet to respond to his claims.

NPP’s 2024 defeat painful but part of global trend – Abena Osei-Asare

0

Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee and Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, Abena Osei-Asare, has described the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general election as painful but not surprising, linking it to a global pattern of anti-incumbent sentiment.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mrs Osei-Asare pointed out that the NPP’s electoral loss was not an isolated case. She cited global reports indicating that approximately 80 per cent of incumbent governments around the world were voted out in 2024.

“In 2024, it was a year of elections across the world. We had 64 countries going to the polls, and it’s on record that 80% of incumbent governments lost a significant number of votes, senators, and parliamentarians. It was like a global wind, largely influenced by economic conditions that made citizens feel the need to send a message to their governments,” she said.

Reflecting on the NPP’s loss, she admitted: “It was a very painful defeat for us, especially given the margins we saw.”

Mrs Osei Asare further attributed part of the party’s downfall to its failure to effectively communicate its achievements, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“After COVID-19, we were not able to communicate our investments and achievements well enough to carry Ghanaians along,” she noted.

Despite the setback, she expressed optimism about the NPP’s future, stressing that with improved public engagement and a renewed focus on highlighting the party’s developmental efforts, the NPP could make a strong comeback in the next election.

GRNMA strike: Govt “losing control” of labour unrest

0

Ibrahim Adjei, former Assistant Secretary to ex-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has accused the government of mishandling the ongoing Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) strike, warning that its failure to engage in meaningful dialogue with health workers risks pushing the country into a deeper healthcare crisis.

According to him, the administration’s posture shows signs of “losing control,” urging immediate intervention through honest negotiations.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, June 9, Adjei slammed the government for what he described as an “intransigent attitude” in dealing with the striking nurses and midwives.

“We have a social contract with the doctors, nurses, and health workers as a whole. We cannot keep telling them to return to work when people’s lives are on the line. You don’t hold healthcare workers to ransom.”

He stressed that the government’s failure lies not only in delayed allowances but in its breakdown of trust with frontline staff.

The remarks come in the wake of intensified industrial action by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), which has led to critical disruptions in healthcare delivery across the country.

However, despite an appeal by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh to resume talks, the GRNMA insists that the 2024 Collective Agreement must be implemented first.

The strike, which began on June 4, has forced many public health facilities to scale down operations, leaving patients stranded and emergency care overstretched. While the Ministry of Health maintains that negotiations are ongoing, the GRNMA argues that multiple deadlines for payments and postings have been missed.

By Emelia B. Addae

Kade (E/R), June 9, GNA – The Kwaebibirem Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has intensified civic and environmental awareness among schoolchildren as part of its activities marking Citizenship Week and World Environment Day 2025.

The Commission visited four basic schools, Tsumwusu M/A Basic School, Pramkuma M/A Basic School, Vision of Christ Academy Kwarmang, and Kwarmang M/A Basic School.

The team, led by Assistant Civic Education Officer Mr. Edward Opare and supported by National Service Personnel Mr. Elisha Nartey, engaged students on the theme: “Ghana’s Future, The Role of the Ghanaian Child.”

Mr. Opare underscored the importance of environmental protection, particularly in the fight against illegal mining, cautioning students that such activities “degrade the environment and affect their learning adversely.”

He also emphasized the need to embody national values: “Be honest, hardworking, patriotic and respectful,” he urged, calling these traits essential for national development.

This civic engagement continued, when the NCCE marked World Environment Day with a tree planting exercise at Subi Presby Basic School later week.

Led by Kwaebibirem Municipal Director, Mrs. Gertrude Adwoa Defoe, the programme focused on the global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.”

Students and school authorities planted five tree seedlings, including coconut and palm varieties, on the school compound.

Mrs. Defoe educated students on alternatives to plastic use and the benefits of proper waste segregation.

“Green vegetation is vital to humanity,” she stated. “We must take personal responsibility in preserving it.”

She further announced that 29 additional schools in the municipality would benefit from similar environmental activities.

Students actively contributed by identifying the benefits of trees, including fresh air, food, erosion control, medicinal value, and environmental beautification.

Headmistress of Subi Presby Basic, Mrs. Gladys Fiadogbey, praised the initiative, describing it as “a wonderful opportunity for our students to actively participate in environmental preservation.”

First Vice Chairman Seeks NPP Oti Region Chairmanship, Highlights Need for Strong Leadership

0

By Kingsley Mamore

Dambai (O/R), June 9, GNA – Mr. Collins Yaw Ahenkora Castro has officially decided to contest the upcoming NPP Oti Region Chairmanship.

Mr. Castro, currently serving as the Regional 1st Vice Chairman, believes the region is in dire need of leadership, rather than mere management, prompting his decision to pursue the top position.

With a rich political history dating back to his days as a student in Tokuroano during the PNDC era, Mr. Castro has built a reputation as a seasoned politician and strategist.

His tenure as a teacher in Ada-Foah, the capital town of Ada East, saw him championing the NPP agenda, serving in various capacities within the party, from grassroots polling station levels to regional roles and this extensive experience had earned him recognition across both the Volta and Oti Region.

Mr. Castro’s motivation stems from his conviction that strong leadership is crucial for the NPP’s success in the Oti Region.

“The Oti Region now has a manager for the party but not a leader,” he emphasized, highlighting the gap he aims to fill.

He has called on party members and floating voters in Oti Region to maintain faith in the party, predicting a resurgence in 2028.

Mr Castrol emphasized the party’s determination to bounce back stronger and urged unity and resilience among members.

Henley & Partners’ Grace Arthur Wins Excellence Award

0

Grace Arthur receiving her award from President John Mahama

Country Representative and Consultant for Henley & Partners, Grace Arthur, has been honoured with the Leadership Excellence Award in Wealth Management (Multinational) at the 9th Ghana CEO Summit held in Accra.

The award recognised her outstanding contributions to Ghana’s wealth management sector, particularly her pioneering efforts in introducing investment migration solutions to the local high-net-worth market.

Mrs. Arthur, a seasoned executive with over 20 years of experience spanning banking, insurance, and wealth advisory, currently leads the Ghana office of Henley & Partners—the global leader in residence and citizenship by investment.

Her shift into the investment migration space marks a significant strategic evolution, as she now guides clients through complex global residency and citizenship planning processes.

She works with a network of international partners, including legal and financial institutions, to deliver globally compliant solutions aligned with clients’ long-term financial, legacy, and mobility goals.

Speaking on the recognition, Mrs. Arthur stated, “Two years ago, I embraced a bold new chapter as a Consultant with Henley & Partners—introducing investment migration, a concept that remains largely esoteric in the Ghanaian market. There were doubts, even from close allies. I said yes. Today, I am humbled that this leap of faith is being recognised.”

Mrs. Arthur also reflected on her broader career journey, noting her involvement in the early days of Ghana’s wealth management sphere. “From introducing sophisticated investment solutions at the bank to redefining value in the insurance sector, this journey has shaped a 360 view of wealth, purpose, and possibility,” she noted.

The 9th edition of the Ghana CEO Summit brought together over 500 CEOs, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss economic transformation and business leadership under the theme, ‘Leading Ghana’s Economic Reset: Transforming Business and Governance for a Sustainable, Futuristic Economy’.

Industry observers say Mrs. Arthur’s recognition underscores the growing relevance of cross-border wealth strategies in Ghana’s maturing financial ecosystem, and the role of trusted advisors in guiding clients through increasingly complex global opportunities.

Lordina Mahama urges chronic patients to embrace ‘MahamaCares’ initiative

0

The First Lady and founder of the Lordina Foundation, Lordina Mahama, has called on individuals living with chronic non-communicable diseases to fully utilise the upcoming MahamaCares health programme.

Speaking at the third edition of a free health screening event in Accra on Saturday, 7 June, she underscored the initiative’s potential to bridge existing gaps in healthcare delivery not adequately addressed by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The MahamaCares programme, officially known as the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, is expected to deliver sustained care for chronic illnesses with a strong emphasis on preventive health.

Mrs Mahama stated that the scheme would operate primarily at the community level, aiming to ensure early detection and regular management of long-term conditions that require ongoing medical attention.

The event, hosted at the Ringway Gospel Centre, catered to over 145 retired Assemblies of God ministers and their spouses.

It featured medical specialists, including urologists, gynaecologists, dietitians, and general practitioners, who conducted various screenings such as blood sugar tests, cancer checks, and prostate examinations. Participants also received medications and lifestyle counselling based on their test results.

Mrs Mahama noted that this third round of health screening built upon the achievements of previous editions held in November 2024 and March 2025.

She reiterated her foundation’s commitment to improving the welfare of those who have dedicated their lives to serving others, stressing the importance of heeding medical advice for long-term wellness.

Reverend Dr Harry Insaidoo, President of the Retired Ministers and Spouses Association, lauded the initiative, describing it as one of the most impactful interventions for retired clergy.

He extended gratitude to Lordina Mahama, President John Mahama, and the medical team, stating: “Every three months, the doctors thoroughly examine us, provide medication, and advise us on maintaining a healthy lifestyle – it is a tremendous blessing.”

Will ECG bosses still be at post if we pay dumsor levy?

Prophet Kofi Oduro is the founder of Alabaster International Ministries Prophet Kofi Oduro is the founder of Alabaster International Ministries

The General Overseer of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro, has criticised the government following the introduction of the new GH¢1 petroleum levy, popularly known as the “Dumsor Levy.”

In a sermon shared via X on June 8, 2025, Prophet Oduro addressed President John Dramani Mahama directly, questioning whether officials at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) would remain in office if the levy is implemented.

He argued that ECG leadership has contributed massively to financial losses in the energy sector and should be held accountable.

“Your Excellency, good morning. If we pay the D-Levy, will the ECG bosses still be at post, even though they are causing financial loss to the state? Will the same people who created this mess remain in charge? I want to know,” he said.

Citing the challenges he encountered when the E-Levy was implemented under the NPP government, Prophet Kofi Oduro stated that he contributed more than many of those now complaining on social media.

He recounted paying GH¢30,000 in E-Levy charges after making a GH¢300,000 transfer.

“When they implemented the E-Levy, no one in this church paid it more than me. Because on behalf of the ministry, I paid GH¢30,000 as E-Levy when making a transfer of GH¢300,000 for cement.

“I am not part of those people who sit on the internet and speak nonsense about the E-Levy because I contributed to it. Don’t be angry when I come and ask what they used the money for because I am asking a responsible question,” he added.

Background

On Tuesday, June 3, 2025, Parliament passed the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

The new bill introduces a GH¢1 levy on petroleum products, intended to help offset Ghana’s longstanding energy sector debt and support stable electricity supply.

Let’s support PHDC to deliver ‘critical’ Petroleum Hub project – Alban Bagbin

0

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called on key state and private sector stakeholders to rally behind the Ghana Petroleum Hub project.

He emphasized that the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC) needs strong institutional support to effectively execute its mandate as the lead developer of the transformative initiative.

Speaking at a strategic retreat held on Saturday, June 7, 2025, between the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy and the PHDC, Alban Bagbin acknowledged the enormity of the challenges facing the Corporation and issued a compelling appeal for coordinated national backing.

As a member of the Energy Committee, the Speaker reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the project and expressed confidence in its potential to transform Ghana’s economic fortunes.

“This initiative is a brilliant one, and PHDC cannot do it alone. They need critical partners — and one of the most crucial partners in any democratic setup is Parliament. All government agencies must collaborate with Parliament to ensure the success of this project. Failure to do so will be to our collective detriment,” he stated.

Endorsing the Petroleum Hub project as a strategic national priority, Speaker Bagbin pointed to its potential in accelerating Ghana’s transition from a lower-middle-income to an upper-middle-income economy.

“This is one of the most critical tools for national development. Ghana currently sits at the lower end of the middle-income ladder. We need bold, innovative initiatives like this to climb higher. Look at Singapore — a small city-state that doesn’t produce oil, yet it has become the world’s oil refining hub. Alongside that, they’ve developed thriving aviation and financial hubs,” he explained.

The retreat had the full participation of Members of Parliament who actively engaged with PHDC officials, posed insightful questions, and pledged their support for the realization of the hub.

Ex-Real Madrid star files for divorce after DNA test proves he’s not biological father of twins he raised

Geremi Njitap and his wife Laura are getting a divorce Geremi Njitap and his wife Laura are getting a divorce

Former Real Madrid player, Geremi Njitap, has filed for divorce after a DNA test revealed that he is not the father of the twins he raised.

Reports indicate that the ex-Cameroon footballer’s wife, Laure, supposedly had an intimate affair with her ex-husband while she was married to Geremi, which possibly resulted in the pregnancy.

Court documents seen indicate that the twins are actually the children of Laure’s ex-husband, not Geremi, as previously believed.

“No children have been born from this union [between Geremi and Laure]. But the discovery that the children were from her previous partner destroyed the couple’s harmony and caused him a huge emotional shock,” The Sun reported.

Geremi played 45 times in La Liga for Real Madrid before a loan spell at Middlesbrough brought him to England.

He was then signed by Chelsea after impressing for Cameroon in the Confederations Cup and went on to play 72 times for the Blues in the Premier League.
