‘Rebrand EOCO as a non-political entity’
Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi is a former Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom
A former Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, has called for the depoliticisation and professional rebranding of Ghana’s investigative institutions, emphasising the need for credibility and public trust.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV and monitored by GhanaWeb on Wednesday May 14, 2025, he alleged that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), has been tainted and needs to be repositioned to gain public confidence.
“FBI in America, they are not too political, and they have been consistent over the years. So, if the federal guys are after you, it’s not NDC, NPP, and I think that is another aspect that we need to look at.
“Unfortunately, EOCO has now been tainted, and they need to repackage, rebrand themselves as a non-political entity. And I think that when they do that, invariably, a lot of us will be more comfortable when we hear that EOCO is examining something,” he added.
He explained that investigative bodies must exercise diligence before making accusations, cautioning against reputational damage based on poorly-handled investigations.
“It shouldn’t be that any of us (NPP members) can just be accused, and you know, reputation damaged, by virtue of the fact that somebody failed to do their homework. Some of my colleagues have been called in to EOCO only for them to realise EOCO are clueless, and they were calling the wrong people,” he added

Watch as Circle traders clash with AMA taskforce during decongestion exercise
Aggrieved traders clashed with a taskforce of the AMA during the decongestion exercise
Some traders at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange clashed with a taskforce from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) during a recent decongestion exercise.
In a viral video circulating on X, the officials of the AMA were captured engaging in heated confrontations with some traders who fiercely resisted attempts to evict them from the pavements.
The caption accompanying the video read, “Chaos erupts at Kwame Nkrumah Circle as AMA taskforce clashes with traders during decongestion exercise. Tensions flared when officials attempted to evict vendors from pavements, sparking resistance and physical confrontations.”
The standoff escalated into a chaos with physical exchanges, as the taskforce moved to clear the area.
This is not the first time the AMA has embarked on an operation to clear traders who have taken over bus stops and pavements around the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.
The Kwame Nkrumah Interchange is one of the major commercial business hubs in Accra, dominated by informal sector workers involved in buying and selling different products, particularly electronics.
The area has also seen many decongestion attempts but which have also been met with similar resistance and the affected traders often returning to the pavements to conduct their business few days after such exercises are done.

Trade Unions set 60-day deadline to regulate prices as cedi appreciates
Traders at the market. File photo.
The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) have announced a 60-day window for businesses to adjust prices in response to the Ghana cedi’s recent appreciation against the US dollar.
The decision follows a high-level meeting on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, with the Minister of Trade and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare.
The meeting was convened amid growing calls from the public for market prices to reflect the cedi’s performance, which now sees it trading at approximately GH₵12.40 to the US dollar.
Although prices of goods remain relatively unchanged, GUTA and AGI explained that there is a natural lag between changes in the exchange rate and price adjustments on the market due to older stock acquired at previously higher rates.
Speaking during the meeting, the President of AGI, Dr Humphrey Ayim Darke expects the appreciation of the cedi to begin reflecting in the wholesale and retail prices within the next 60 days.
“We sincerely believe that within the next 60 days, this impact will be reflected in the final prices of our wholesale and retail products. We also strongly believe that in the mid-year budget review, we will see further reflection and commitment from the government regarding these gains,” he said in a video report shared by Channel One TV on X.
For his part, the President of GUTA, Dr Joseph Obeng, also appealed to government to maintain the cedi’s current stability assuring that traders would adjust prices as new stock arrives.

MTN FA Cup: Hearts seek redemption against Berekum Chelsea on Sunday
After a brief pause to accommodate the MTN FA Cup semi-final matches, the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League returns this weekend with a lineup of crucial fixtures as the title race and relegation battles intensify.
Accra Hearts of Oak will be aiming to end a five-match winless streak when they travel to face Berekum Chelsea at the Golden City Park.
With just four games remaining, the Phobians find themselves almost out of the title race, following a frustrating goalless draw with arch-rivals Asante Kotoko in the Super Clash at the Accra Sports Stadium last Sunday.
Now playing for pride and a potential top-four finish, Hearts are under pressure to rediscover their form against a Berekum Chelsea side that has shown signs of revival.
The Blues, who sit 11th on the league table, have picked up three wins in their last five games, and a victory over Hearts would further strengthen their mid-table position and hand them the bragging rights in what is expected to be a tightly contested affair.
Elsewhere, Asante Kotoko will continue their push for the league crown when they host Dreams FC at the Baba Yara Stadium.
The Porcupine Warriors remain in contention and will hope to capitalise on home advantage to maintain pressure on the top contenders.
The title race itself remains wide open, with Nations FC, Bibiani Gold Stars, and Heart of Lions all vying for glory as the season heads into its final stretch. Every point will prove vital in what promises to be a dramatic finish.
Other fixtures
Elsewhere Karela United who are fighting against relegation will host Medeama SC at the Aliu Mahama Stadium in a must-win encounter.
Defending champions, FC Samartex 1996, will welcome Bechem United to the Nsenkyire Sports Arena, aiming to end the season on a strong note.
At the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex in Tema Newtown, Vision FC will clash with Young Apostles in a mid-table battle, while at the Ampain AAK II Sports Arena, Basake Holy Stars will take on Heart of Lions, who are firmly in the hunt for the title.
The weekend action kicks off on Saturday with Accra Lions facing Aduana FC at the Accra Sports Stadium.
On Monday Legon Cities meet league leaders Nations FC at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, in what could prove to be a defining moment in the title race for the visitors.

What you should know about credit scores
The concept of credit scoring has evolved significantly from its inception in the 1950s by Bill Fair and Earl Isaac (creators of the FICO score system, discussed much later in this article) to today’s advanced algorithms incorporating alternative data.
A credit score is a three-digit number that rates your creditworthiness — essentially, it answers the question: how consistently do you repay your debts? Even in non-formal settings, individuals who lend to family and friends are typically interested in the borrower’s borrowing history.
If you ever avoided further lending to a frequent borrower, then that person must have rated poorly in your ‘books.’ Now, flip that for business or international lending, and consider what it means in a broader financial context.
The Digital Transformation of Credit Assessment
Traditional credit scoring systems primarily focused on “the three Cs” – Character, Capacity, and Capital. However, modern systems, as exemplified by innovations like myCreditScore in Ghana, have expanded to include digital footprints, mobile money transactions, and utility payment histories.
Recent studies highlight the transformative impact of mobile technology on credit scoring:
- The GSMA’s 2023 Mobile Economy Report indicates that mobile money accounts in Sub-Saharan Africa have grown to over 621 million
- In Ghana specifically, myCreditScore’s platform leverages a user base of over 22 million mobile money users
- According to McKinsey’s Digital Banking in Africa report, digital lending platforms can reduce loan processing costs by up to 90%
Alternative Data Sources
Modern credit scoring systems incorporate diverse data points:
- Utility payments and telecom data
- Digital transaction history
- Social media and online behavior patterns
- Mobile money usage patterns
- E-commerce transaction history
Economic Impact of Credit Scoring Systems
Risk Management and Financial Stability
Research demonstrates significant benefits of robust credit scoring:
- The World Bank’s “Doing Business” reports consistently show that countries with comprehensive credit information systems have lower rates of non-performing loans
- IMF studies indicate that sophisticated credit scoring can reduce loan default rates by 20-30%
- myCreditScore’s pilot program achieved a notable 2.51% default rate, significantly lower than traditional lending systems
Financial Inclusion Impact
Credit scoring systems contribute to broader financial inclusion:
- World Bank Global Findex Database shows that access to formal credit increases by up to 30% with comprehensive credit scoring systems
- According to CGAP research, alternative credit scoring methods can make up to 50% more people eligible for formal credit
- The Center for Financial Inclusion reports that digital credit scoring can reduce the cost of credit assessment by up to 50%

Emerging technologies offer new possibilities:
- World Economic Forum research suggests blockchain-based credit scoring could reduce credit assessment costs by up to 70%
- Studies by the Bank for International Settlements indicate that DeFi platforms could provide credit-scoring services to up to 1.7 billion unbanked individuals
Policy Implications and Regulatory Framework
Data Protection and Privacy

Reports: Iran could create nuclear consortium with Gulf states
Tehran, May 14, (dpa/GNA) – Iran has proposed to create a nuclear consortium with other Gulf countries amid high-level talks with the United States, according to reports in Iranian and international media.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Wednesday that his recent visits to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were connected to ongoing nuclear negotiations with the United States.
“We are very interested in a regional understanding of this negotiation and a possible agreement that will lead to increased security and increased regional understanding,” he told reporters.
Iranian portal Didban said countries such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates could be involved in a facility for uranium enrichment on Iranian soil.
The US and Iran have been negotiating over Tehran’s nuclear programme in Oman, with Washington hoping to prevent the country from building atomic weapons.
The New York Times reported that Iran would only enrich uranium to a low level – below the threshold relevant for nuclear weapons – and then supply it to Arab states for civilian use.
Iranian news website Amwaj quoted a “high-ranking political source in Tehran” as backing the plan for a regional enrichment consortium. “The idea is good, and Iran can consider it – as long as it is not a substitute for Iran’s own enrichment.”
The proposed facilities could be located on Iranian islands in the Gulf, the Hammihan newspaper reported.
The talks come 10 years after Iran agreed in Vienna to limit its nuclear programme in the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
The US subsequently withdrew from the deal during President Donald Trump’s first term, with Washington imposing harsh sanctions on Tehran.

Whose set stole the show? A look at the best stage designs
King Paluta, Stonebwoy and King Promise
At the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards, performances weren’t just about vocals and energy, set design played a starring role.
From symbolism to storytelling, several artistes brought their A-game in visuals and props. But which act had the most memorable stagecraft?
Stonebwoy: A Golden Symphony of Symbolism
Reggae/Dancehall heavyweight Stonebwoy proved once again that he’s a master of spectacle. His performance was a layered visual experience , from the orchestra donning golden masks to his dramatic descent down the staircase, each element was deliberate.
The inclusion of the ‘Ankh’ symbol and carefully curated outfits added spiritual and cultural depth. Every visual beat complemented the music, resulting in a fusion of storytelling and sound. Stonebwoy didn’t just perform, he narrated an experience.
Fameye: A Journey from Grass to Grace
Fameye’s set was rich with emotion and symbolism. The dry scenery, modest costumes, and wooden cross reflected a narrative of struggle, faith, and eventual triumph.
His costume transition, from a tattered look to a star-studded appearance, mirrored his personal and artistic evolution. Dancers enhanced the story with their own props and choreography. Though some critics argued it felt brief or slightly cluttered, the creative direction and execution were undeniably powerful.
King Promise: Simplicity with Purpose
King Promise, the newly crowned Artiste of the Year, opted for subtlety over extravagance, and it worked. His set wasn’t filled with grand structures, but the few props used carried meaning.
A telephone booth opened the performance, cleverly tying into his hit single “Paris.” It served as both a visual hook and a narrative bridge. With minimal set pieces, the focus remained on his performance and choreography, a gamble that paid off with elegance and precision.
KiDi: Intentional Minimalist
KiDi also choose a well-utilised minimalist set design, starting with a ‘Lord’s Supper’ style table which he stood on while starting out his performance.
This left ample space for him and his dancers to take center stage and put the attention on them.
Kweku Smoke: A Missed Opportunity
Billed as the closing act, Kweku Smoke’s performance had the most time for setup, but perhaps not the best payoff.
He emerged dramatically from a jail cell, a strong metaphor for liberation.
However, the prop was quickly sidelined and became more of an obstruction than a feature. The promise of a climactic stage moment became a disappointment due to under-utilisation of the set, leaving the performance visually disjointed.
Verdict: Stonebwoy Leads the Pack
While each artiste brought something unique to the table, Stonebwoy’s performance stood out for its thematic cohesion, grandeur, and purposeful design. It wasn’t just music, it was theatre.

Health minister decries poor maintenance at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital
Kwabena Mintah Akandoh is the Minister of Health
The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has raised alarm over the poor state of infrastructure and maintenance at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana’s premier health referral facility.
He described the current situation as unacceptable and indicative of a broader failure in maintenance culture across some health institutions in the country.
He paid a working visit to the hospital on May 14, 2025, following a number of complaints and reports received from the public regarding the deteriorating conditions of key sections of the facility.
His inspection focused on the Maternity and Surgical blocks, as well as other critical areas of the hospital.
In a 3news.com report, it said Akandoh was accompanied by some officials from the Ministry of Health and the KBTH management.
The team visited several wards, washrooms, broken-down elevators, and the general surroundings of the hospital, the report stated.
The minister expressed disappointment over the disrepair he witnessed in many parts of the facility.
“Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital is our premier referral centre. As we have all seen, it is not in the best of shape. I have received a lot of reports from the public, so I decided to come and see things for myself. The situation calls for urgent and coordinated action,” he indicated.
He acknowledged that some of the issues had already been identified by the hospital’s management, who assured him that efforts were underway to fix them.
However, he stressed that many of the problems were long-standing and had been neglected for years due to what he described as a poor maintenance culture.
“We have a very poor maintenance culture. Some of these things have been abandoned for a very long time. It is encouraging that management agrees with my concerns. We are all going to go back and see how we can restore the glory of Korle-Bu,” he said.
The visit comes at a time when Korle-Bu has faced growing public criticisms over the state of its facilities, which some fear could compromise healthcare delivery.
In response to Akandoh’s concerns, the management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has promised to convene an emergency meeting to discuss and implement immediate corrective measures.
The report said that they also pledged to work closely with the Ministry of Health to ensure lasting improvements.

Africa exports 70% of raw beans globally but gains only 1% of chocolate market – Eric Opoku
Eric Opoku is the Minister of Food and Agriculture
The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has lamented Africa’s share of the global market despite being a large contributor of raw materials.
According to him, Africa contributes about 70% of raw cocoa beans as cocoa export, which is used to make chocolate, but the continent only benefits from 1% of the chocolate market globally.
The minister said the goal of the John Dramani Mahama-led government is to move from exporting raw materials to producing finished goods that meet the global standards.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Africa Sustainable Commodities Initiative Ninth Meeting by Proforest and Solidaridad, he said;
“And even the cocoa we export just the raw cocoa beans. When you look at the entire African continent, when it comes to the supply of raw cocoa, Africa supplies over 70% of raw cocoa beans to the market. But when it comes to chocolate, that is where cocoa has been manufactured into chocolate. The global market is estimated around $119 billion. And African share is 1%.
“When it comes to raw materials, our share is 70%. But when it comes to value addition, we do just 1%. It means that our expenditure on manufactured goods imported from other countries will create jobs in those countries at the expense of our own people,” he added.
Eric Opoku added that the government is implementing the Feed Ghana programme to produce not only enough for consumption, but also for exports and the future.
“So, we are not only thinking about producing enough food to feed the people of Ghana. We are also thinking about producing enough raw materials for industrial operations. We believe that if we are able to establish that symbiotic, strong relationship between agriculture and industry along the value chain, we can create millions of jobs, bring down unemployment, and then also wean ourselves from the huge food import bill again,” he stated.

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that no further disciplinary action will be taken against the acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, following a controversial video that showed him handing an undisclosed amount of U.S. dollars to evangelist Patricia Oduro, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.
The video, which quickly went viral, triggered widespread public criticism and raised concerns about a possible breach of Ghana’s Foreign Exchange Act and the Code of Conduct for public appointees.
Civil society groups and members of the minority caucus called for Gyamfi’s dismissal, arguing that his conduct undermined public trust and violated the standards expected of a government official.
However, President Mahama has decided to accept Mr. Gyamfi’s public apology and bring the matter to a close—albeit with a stern warning.
Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, conveyed the President’s position at a press briefing, stating that President Mahama has accepted the apology from Mr. Sammy Gyamfi.
He added that, according to the President, while the incident is regrettable, no further action will be taken.
However, a firm warning has been issued to Mr. Gyamfi and all public appointees to strictly adhere to the Code of Conduct and act at all times in a manner that upholds public confidence.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stressed the President’s commitment to accountability and ethical governance but noted that the current situation did not warrant Gyamfi’s removal.
“The President has made it clear that while forgiveness has been extended in this instance, any recurrence of such behavior will not be tolerated,” he added.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions, with critics arguing that leniency may set a dangerous precedent, while others believe the public censure and official warning suffice.
The Ghana Gold Board has yet to comment officially on the matter.
Eddie Poku writes: What Ghana needs to lead Africa’s automotive revolution
There’s a lot of movement towards Africa’s industrial future, and Ghana has a seat in the front row. With the right spark, Africa’s automotive industry can shift gears from low-revving used imports to a full-throttle ecosystem of production, innovation, and electrified mobility. But how do we get there?
Let’s start with where we are now.
The Current State of Play
In 2024, only 175,915 new vehicles were sold across Sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa), while over 1 million used vehicles poured into the region. Ghana, like many others, remains heavily dependent on these second-hand imports, often older, less efficient, and environmentally problematic.
Vehicle penetration in SSA stands at a modest three cars per 100 people, compared to a global average of 18. That’s a huge market waiting to be activated.
“We’ve barely scratched the surface of Africa’s potential,” says Martina Biene, Chairperson and Managing Director of Volkswagen Group Africa. “But for manufacturers to commit, we need a continent-wide commitment to policy alignment, trade facilitation, and clean energy infrastructure.”
So, what needs to change?
- Harmonised Automotive Policies
Currently, 41 out of 54 African countries lack basic automotive standards, including fuel quality and emissions regulations. For manufacturers and investors, this creates a logistical nightmare.
In Ghana, the government has taken early steps with local assembly policies and tax incentives, but regional fragmentation slows progress.

According to Victoria Backhaus-Jerling, CEO of the African Association of Automobile Manufacturers (AAAM), “What we need is one Africa, one automotive standard. That’s how we unlock efficiency, reduce costs, and create a value chain that benefits everyone, from Accra to Addis Ababa.”
- Implementing AfCFTA’s Rules of Origin
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) offers perhaps the continent’s greatest shot at industrial transformation. One key mechanism is the Rules of Origin (RoO), a proposed policy that mandates vehicles must contain at least 40% local content to qualify for tariff-free trade across the continent.
With proper implementation, RoO could:
– Support Ghana-based component manufacturing
– Attract OEMs to set up shop
– Boost intra-African exports
– Drive down costs of locally-assembled cars
It’s like building a highway that automakers can finally drive on, with far fewer tolls.
- Strategic Shift Away from Used Imports
It’s time to confront the elephant in the garage. Ghana’s auto market is flooded with cheap, imported used vehicles, often older than ten years and incompatible with today’s clean energy standards.
Banning used cars outright is unrealistic (and unpopular), but gradual reforms could include:
– Phasing age limits for imports
– Offering low-interest auto loans for new vehicles
– Prioritizing fuel-efficient and EV-ready models
This approach won’t just benefit the economy, it will clean the air, save fuel, and create jobs.
- Investing in People and Places
No auto revolution happens without a skilled workforce and strong infrastructure.
Ghana needs more technical training institutes focused on auto engineering, diagnostics, electronics, and EV technologies. Our ports must become export-ready. And we must electrify and digitize our grid to support a future that’s fast becoming battery-powered.
The Volkswagen-backed GenFarm project in Rwanda, which deploys electric tractors for sustainable farming, shows how strategic partnerships can create African-born solutions. Ghana can replicate and scale similar efforts.
- Plugging into the EV Opportunity
Electric vehicles are no longer a distant dream. From Kenya’s electric motorbike boom to Morocco’s EV exports, the continent is starting to plug in. Ghana must position itself to lead the EV value chain, including battery assembly, charging infrastructure, and local production of affordable electric cars, especially as the majority of our energy mix is renewable.

“If we get this right,” Biene says, “Africa could become a global player in the automotive industry, not just a market, but a maker of mobility solutions.”
So What’s the Finish Line?
With policy alignment, smart investment, and bold vision, Ghana and Africa as a whole can do more than catch up, we can lead. The continent’s youth, resources, and market potential make it the next frontier in global auto manufacturing.
But it won’t happen by chance. It requires drive, both literal and political.
And that’s the real engine of change.

‘Drug Lord’ Arrested In Aboabo With Cash
THE ASHANTI Regional Police Command has chalked a major success in their fight against the use and sale of illicit drugs in Kumasi, with the arrest of a key drug dealer, identified as Adam Mohammed.
The 29 year old suspect was arrested from his hideout at Aboabo No. 1, following a major special police operation, conducted by the Airport District Police Command at 10pm on Saturday, May 10, 2025.
According to DSP Godwin Ahianyo, of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, a cache of suspected illicit drugs and money were found on Adam Mohammed, who is assisting police in investigations.
The illicit drugs found on him during the swoop are 35 packs of 250mg Tramadol, 28 packs of 120mg Tramadol, 11 packs of 225mg Tramadol and approximately 50 empty cartons used for packaging and transporting the drugs.
He added, “Additionally, an amount of Sixty-Six Thousand Nine Hundred and Fifty Ghana Cedis (GHS 66,950.00) was discovered in the suspect’s room”.
DSP Ahianyo said “The cash is believed to be proceeds from the sale of the illicit drugs and has been retrieved for evidential purposes”, adding that the suspect is in custody and assisting investigations.
According to him, “All exhibits, including the narcotic substances and the cash, have been secured for further investigation and legal proceedings”.

‘I’ll not sit here and say that I’m not happy’
Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi is the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Anyaa Sowutuom
Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, expressed joy over the recent performance of the country’s currency against foreign currencies, including the United States (US) dollar.
Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV on May 14, 2025, Dr Adomako Kissi said that he is very happy because the appreciation of the cedi bodes well for the economy and thus the livelihood of Ghanaians.
He indicated that it would be hypocritical for him not to acknowledge the strong performance of Ghana’s currency against other major foreign currencies.
“I’m happy because if the cedi is performing well, it impacts all of us in our lives. So, I will not sit here and say that I’m not happy that the cedi is appreciating,” he said.
The former legislator, however, noted that the John Dramani Mahama government does not deserve all the credit for the performance of the Ghana cedi.
He pointed out that the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government also deserves credit because of some of the steps it took, which he says are playing a key role in the appreciation of the Ghana cedi.
“But let us be very frank with Ghanaians that it is a sum of the total of many factors, including… reserving more gold, which was touted (by the NPP) and the infamous Gold-for-Oil programme,” he said.
He added that people who spoke against some of these policies when they were introduced by the NPP government have now become their “ambassadors.”

‘Wait for official nominations before campaigning’ – NPP to prospective aspirants
NPP has cautioned prospective aspirants against engaging in internal campaign activities
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has cautioned all members and prospective aspirants against engaging in internal campaign activities before the official nomination process opens.
In a press release dated May 14, 2025, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party emphasised that until official nominations are opened, no individual is permitted to engage party structures in any form of campaigning.
“The party leadership wishes to bring to the attention of all members and prospective aspirants at various levels that, until official nominations are duly opened, no individual is permitted to engage party executives or party structures in any form of campaigning or soliciting support for internal positions”, it noted.
It further indicated the directive aligns with the party’s commitment to fairness in its internal electoral processes.
“This directive is in line with the Party’s commitment to fairness in the administration of its internal electoral processes. Premature engagements not only undermine the authority of the Party’s organs but also risk disrupting the careful and strategic efforts currently underway to reposition the Party for victory in the 2028 general elections”, it stated.
The party urged all stakeholders to exercise restraint and uphold party unity.
“We therefore urge all members, supporters, and stakeholders to fully cooperate with this directive and refrain from any activities that could compromise party unity or the integrity of our processes.
“Let us remain focused and supportive of the internal reforms and efforts being spearheaded by the leadership to build a more formidable and cohesive Party.”
The NPP assured its members of timely communication regarding the electoral calendar, pledging that “timely updates on all relevant timelines and guidelines when nominations are officially opened” will be provided.

Police arrest armed robbers, drug peddlers after series of operations in Kumasi
Some evidence retrieved from the suspects by the police
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested multiple suspects involved in armed robbery and drug trafficking following a series of operations in Kumasi.
On May 8, police patrol teams apprehended three suspects—Umar Issah (26), Sherif Mohammed (20), and Abdul Jalilu (19)—for allegedly robbing two residents at gunpoint in Kenyasi. The suspects, who used motorbikes, stole mobile phones but were intercepted by police.
During the pursuit, Sherif Mohammed sustained a gunshot wound, while the others were injured. All three are under police guard at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
The stolen items and motorbikes, according to the police, have been recovered as evidence.
In a separate operation on May 10, the Airport District Police arrested Adam Mohamed (29) for alleged narcotics dealing. A raid at Aboabo No. 1 uncovered 35 packs of 250mg Tramadol, 28 packs of 120mg, 11 packs of 225mg, and GH₵66,950 suspected to be drug proceeds. Mohamed is in custody as investigations continue.
In a significant breakthrough, the Police Intelligence Directorate arrested Michael Owusu Ansah, alias Baby Last, wanted since 2016 for the murder of Police Officer G/Cpl Frank Essel during a robbery at the Open Space Hotel in Denchemuoso.
Owusu Ansah confessed to multiple robberies in Denchemuoso, Atwima-Techiman, and Asuoyeboah, leading to the arrest of four accomplices: Emmanuel Owusu (Cassidy), Maxwell Gyimah (Nana Kwame), Sudais Oxford Ntiamoah (The Man Sudais), and Rhano Okyere (Demon).
A fifth suspect, Abedi, remains at large. The suspects were arraigned before the Atasomanso Circuit Court on May 13 and remanded until June 4.
Following directives from Interior Minister Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, police have also arrested 34 suspects in a crackdown on drug trafficking at Thinka Island, seizing illicit substances and cash.

Ghana drops to 20th cheapest country for petrol in Africa
Ghana ranked 20th cheapest country for petrol in Africa
Ghana has dropped seven places to rank as the 20th cheapest country for petrol in Africa, according to the latest data from GlobalPetrolPrices.com.
The average price of petrol in Ghana stood at $1.211 per litre in May 2025, marking a decline in global ranking from 48th in April 2024 to 77th.
This comes despite the relative stability of the cedi’s appreciation against the US dollar and other major currencies, and a downturn in international crude oil prices.
Meanwhile, Brent crude is currently trading at $65.89 per barrel reflecting softer global demand and a stable supply outlook.
According to the data, Libya remains the country with the lowest petrol prices globally, at just $0.027 per litre.
Angola ($0.327) and Algeria ($0.344) follow closely behind, with Egypt ($0.377), Nigeria ($0.537), and Sudan ($0.700) also offering cheaper fuel than Ghana.
Other African nations ahead of Ghana in affordability include Tunisia, Liberia, Ethiopia, and Gabon.
While local fuel prices have seen moderate declines in recent weeks, the sharp drop in Ghana’s ranking suggests persistent pricing rigidities or structural inefficiencies in the domestic fuel market.
However, the Chief Executive of the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC), Dr Riverson Oppong, has confirmed that fuel prices are set to decline further from Friday, May 16, 2025 citing favorable exchange rate movements and falling benchmark prices.

UN calls for calm as fighting resumes in Libya’s Tripoli
Libyan armored vehicles patrol after fighting between heavily armed militias in Tripoli, Libya
The United Nations has called for calm as fighting has resumed in Libya’s capital, Tripoli, a day after authorities declared order had been restored.
The UN Mission to Libya (UNSMIL) warned on Wednesday that the situation in the country could “spiral out of control”.
“UNSMIL reiterates its calls for an immediate, unconditional ceasefire in all areas, allowing safe corridors for the evacuation of civilians trapped in intense conflict zones,” the mission wrote on X.
“Attacking and damaging civilian infrastructure, physically harming civilians, and jeopardising the lives and safety of the population may constitute crimes under international law. Those responsible will be held accountable for their actions,” it added.
Clashes erupted between the Rada militia and the 444 Brigade, loyal to Prime Minister Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah, in key areas of Tripoli, including the port, the AFP news agency reported, quoting a security source.
The official called the ongoing fighting “urban warfare” with intermittent clashes in residential areas and the use of light and medium weapons.
The fighting calmed down later on Wednesday after the government announced a truce, Tripoli residents told the Reuters news agency.
“Regular forces, in coordination with the relevant security authorities, have begun taking the necessary measures to ensure calm, including the deployment of neutral units,” the government’s Ministry of Defence said.
Fighting across Tripoli
Clashes broke out on Monday night after reports that Abdelghani al-Kikli, leader of the Support and Stability Apparatus (SSA), a militia that controls the southern district of Abu Salim, was killed.
According to local authorities, at least six people were killed in Monday’s fighting.
While Tuesday morning was calm, the fighting restarted overnight with major battles in the capital.
For residents, the uncertainty brought by the attacks was “terrorising”, a father of three told Reuters from the Dahra area.
“I had my family in one room to avoid random shelling,” he added.
Al-Dbeibah ordered what he called irregular armed groups to be dismantled, including Rada.
With the seizure of the SSA territory by factions allied with al-Dbeibah, including the 444 and 111 brigades, Rada is the last significant faction not allied with the prime minister.
Since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has struggled to recover.
In 2014, the country split between a UN-recognised government in Tripoli, led by al-Dbeibah, and a rival administration in the east dominated by commander Khalifa Haftar and his self-styled Libyan National Army.

3 suspected robbers arrested for terrorising residents of Kenyasi and environs
The Ashanti regional police command has announced the arrest of three suspected armed robbers alleged to be terrorising residents of Kenyasi and its environs.
On May 8, 2025, Umar Issah, Sherif Mohammed, and Abdul Jalelu, aged between 19 and 26, allegedly attacked and robbed two Kenyasi residents at gunpoint. The suspects, operating on three separate motorbikes, forcibly took the victims’ mobile phones and attempted to flee the scene.

The Kenyasi police patrol team apprehended the suspects shortly after the incident.
“During the pursuit, suspects Sharif Mohammed sustained a gunshot wound on the right rib, whiles the others also suffered various injuries and are receiving medical treatment at Komfo Anokye under strict police protection,” said DSP Godwin Ahianyo, Ashanti Police PRO.
The stolen mobile phones and the motorbikes used in the robbery have been retrieved and are being held for evidential purposes as investigations continue.

Other arrests
The police have also arrested 32-year-old Michael Owusu Ansah, alias Baby Last, a suspect on the police wanted list since 2016 in connection with a robbery and the murder of police officer Frank Essel of the SWAT in Ashanti, which occurred at the Open Space Hotel in Denchemuoso on May 19, 2016.
During interrogation, the suspect confessed to engaging in multiple street and residential robberies in Denchemuoso, Atwima-Techiman, Asuoyeboah, and surrounding areas.

He also disclosed that his gang operated with knives, pistols, and pump-action guns. Further investigations led to the identification and arrest of four accomplices, namely Emmanuel Owusu, alias Cassidy; Maxwell Gyimah, alias Nana Kwame; Sudais Oxford Ntiamoah, alias The Man Sudais; and Rhano Okyere, alias Demon.
These individuals were arrested from their hideouts within Atwima-Techiman and Denchemuoso. However, one suspect, known only as Abedi, remains at large.

The police say efforts are underway to apprehend him and recover the weapons used in the robberies.
All five arrested suspects were arraigned before the Atasomanso Circuit Court on May 13, 2025, and remanded into police custody to reappear on June 4, 2025.

Victoria Hamah: Woman once sacked by Mahama for merely wishing for $1m, begs for Sammy Gyamfi
The ongoing controversy involving Goldbod CEO Sammy Gyamfi during Mahama’s second administration has drawn a response from a former Mahama appointee who faced severe consequences over similar dollar-related matters.
What may seem like ordinary currency for transactions, whether $1 million in whispers or bundles given as gifts, has proven more destructive than Thor’s hammer, toppling prominent officials from their positions.
The latest incident began as what appeared to be a generous gesture when Mr Gyamfi, a vocal critic of the opposition NPP, gave self-styled evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng (formerly fetish priestess Nana Agradaa) cash on Saturday, May 11, 2025.
Unbeknownst to Mr Gyamfi, the scene captured in widely shared social media footage would spark major controversy, giving his opponents ammunition to demand his head on a plate.
The incident has spiralled into a summons by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah; reprimands by a section of Ghanaians; a petition by a private individual for CHRAJ to investigate the young politician; and calls for dismissal, leaving President Mahama in a dilemma and intense pressure to act.
Suddenly, Mr Gyamfi’s efforts in establishing the Goldbod to regulate gold exports, a move that has strengthened Ghana’s control and increased gold shipments to help stabilise the cedi, have taken a backseat, with his ill-advised conduct taking centre stage.
While Mr Gyamfi quickly issued a public apology, many Ghanaians demanded stronger disciplinary action as a deterrent, particularly as President Mahama promoted accountability through a new Code of Conduct for officials.
As debate continues, observers recall the 2013 dismissal of Victoria Lakshmi Hammah, then Deputy Communications Minister, after a leaked recording revealed her stating she wouldn’t leave politics until amassing $1 million, perhaps influenced by her middle name referencing the Hindu goddess of wealth.
The NPP insists Mr Gyamfi should face similar consequences.
READ ALSO: Dollar-gift saga: NPP roasts Sammy Gyamfi for “denigrating” Cedi
As NPP communications team member Ellen Ama Ofosuaa Daako noted on Angel TV on May 13: “There was a lady called Victoria Hamah who said that if she had $ 1 million, she would stop politics. She was sacked, and to this day, she hasn’t recovered from the incident. Unlike Sammy Gyamfi, who now has the dollars and is allegedly dashing them out.”
A few hours later, Ms Hamah has responded in a well-articulated open letter to President Mahama to chart a different course.
In a measured post on her Facebook page, Ms Hamah is advocating a different approach:
“While recognising the matter’s sensitivity, I propose an approach affirming both accountability and your administration’s transformative ideals. A formal reprimand, rather than dismissal, would represent the most constitutionally sound response – one that balances accountability with mentorship and democratic growth.”
She argued compellingly, “Youth and women face structural disadvantages in Ghanaian politics. True inclusion requires empowering them through participation, providing guidance frameworks, and addressing misjudgements proportionately, not with exclusion.”
Ms Hammah concluded, “The cost of disillusioning an engaged generation outweighs the discomfort of navigating controversy with principle. Transforming this into a learning opportunity would reaffirm your commitment to intergenerational equity and inclusive governance – cornerstones of Ghana’s democratic future.”
The eloquent appeal presents President Mahama with a nuanced alternative as he weighs his response to the escalating controversy.

There’s Nothing Wrong If Mahama Seeks A Third Term – A Plus
The Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central in the Central Region of Ghana, Honourable Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, said there is nothing inherently wrong if President John Dramani Mahama decides to go for a third term in office.
Speaking in an interview with UTV Ghana on the Adekye Nsoroma programme, A Plus said changing the constitution to allow a President to seek a third term is a matter of law; therefore, if that law is followed, nothing wrong has been done.
Sung Biela Foundation Ghana celebrates mother’s day with support for 40 single mothers, widows in Bawku
As the world celebrated Mother’s Day on Sunday, the Sung Biela Foundation Ghana brought smiles to the faces of 40 single mothers and widows in Bawku in the Kusaug Traditional Area of the Upper East Region.
The foundation, which is known for its community empowerment programmes, organised a special event to honour, support, and encourage women who are raising children alone or have lost their husbands.
The 40 selected women from seven different communities were presented with rice, cooking oil, markerel, clothes, and undisclosed cash support. The gesture was aimed at helping them cope with daily challenges and showing them that their struggles are recognised and valued.
Many of the beneficiaries, visibly touched by the gesture, shared how much the support meant to them. Alimatu Iddrisu, a widow, said: “The gift makes me feel seen. At least today, I know someone remembers me.”

Another widow, Anaba Gladys, also expressed appreciation: “It’s not easy to provide for your children. This support gives me some relief. May God bless the Foundation.”
The women also called for continued support in the form of livelihood training and education for their children, saying such help would make a lasting difference.
Speaking at the event, Programme Coordinator of the Sung Biela Foundation Ghana, Jacob Ayanaba, said the initiative was part of their mission to empower vulnerable women.
“This Mother’s Day, we chose to honour single mothers and widows because they are the silent heroes. They carry heavy responsibilities and often do so with little support. Today, we say, ‘We see you. We value you,” he said.

He also acknowledged those who make such interventions possible:
“We’re grateful to our active supporters and donors whose generosity keeps this work going. Special thanks go to Mrs. Naa Maamiley Addy for her continued commitment to the vulnerable in our communities. Her support has touched many lives, and we are proud to work with people like her.”
Mr. Ayanaba added that the foundation is working on rolling out skills training and small business support for women in the area.
“Beyond today, we want to equip women to earn income through poultry, soap making, or petty trading. That’s our next step.”
Residents in Bawku have praised the Foundation for remembering women who are often overlooked in times of celebration.

One of them said, “In our culture, mothers are the backbone of the family. What Sung Biela Foundation has done today is not just charity—it is honouring tradition.”
The Sung Biela Foundation Ghana is appealing to individuals, corporate bodies, and NGOs to partner with them to reach more vulnerable groups in the Upper East Region.
“Our work is just beginning. With more support, we can touch more lives,” Mr. Ayanaba noted.
Sung Biela Foundation Ghana is a community-focused NGO that works in the Upper East Region to promote peace, education, and economic empowerment. It was founded with the vision of building stronger, self-reliant communities across northern Ghana.

Key disturbing takeaways from Cassie Ventura’s testimony in Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ racketeering trial
Known as “Victim 1” in the indictment and “Cassie” in the music world, Cassandra Ventura, former longtime girlfriend of Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is pregnant and in her third trimester, took the stand Tuesday in what is likely to be several days of intense testimony.
She was on the stand for about 4.5 hours Tuesday and is set to return Wednesday for further questioning.
Prosecutors have said Combs and his inner circle used threats, violence, drugs, bribery, arson, kidnapping and lies to coerce Ventura and another woman into extended sexual performances known as “Freak Offs” and to protect the music mogul’s reputation.
The defense acknowledged Combs has been violent with romantic partners and has a “different” sex life. However, they argued the women consented to these sexual arrangements and evidence of domestic violence does not mean he committed racketeering or sex trafficking.
Combs has pleaded not guilty to five counts including racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. If convicted, he could face a sentence of up to life in prison.
First meeting since 2018
Tuesday’s highly anticipated testimony represented the first in-person meeting between Ventura and Combs in over six years.
The pair first began dating around 2007 and went public with their relationship in 2012. They split in 2018.
Ventura and Combs last saw each other in November 2018 at the funeral of Kim Porter, the actress who had three children with Combs, defense attorney Teny Geragos said in opening statements Monday.
When Ventura entered the courtroom, she walked down the center aisle with her eyes facing forward. Wearing a brown dress, Ventura passed by the jury box to the witness stand. Combs turned around in his chair and watched her walk to her seat. She did not appear to make eye contact with him.
The start of Ventura’s relationship with ‘Sean’
Ventura, now 38, detailed how she and the now 55-year-old Combs – who she called “Sean” – began dating nearly two decades ago.
Ventura first met Combs when she was about 19 years old. She signed a contract with his company, Bad Boy Records, in early 2006, and they struck up a platonic relationship.
After a boat party in Miami, their relationship became more intimate and sexual.
“I wanted to be around Sean for the same reasons as everyone else at the time – just this exciting, entertaining, fun guy that also happened to have my career in his hands,” Ventura said. “It felt special because not a lot of people got that time with him.”
She said she soon fell in love with him and “traveled with him everywhere…like (his) little shadow.”
Combs was controlling and abusive
Over time, Ventura said she began to see Combs’ more controlling and abusive qualities.
“Control was everything, from the way that I looked, to what I was working on that day, who I was speaking to,” she said.
He had mood swings that led to physical abuse
“You make the wrong face and the next thing I knew, I was getting hit in the face,” she said. “If I was a brat or something, he would let me know I needed to ‘fix my face’ or ‘watch my mouth.’”
If he disapproved of something she did, he directed his staff to take her belongings away, she said. He’d also kick her out of the house or her apartment that he was paying for, she testified.
Some of her arguments with Combs became violent
“He would smash me in my head, knock me over, drag me, kick me, stomp me in the head if I was down,” she said.
She added she suffered injuries from the abuse, including knots on her forehead, busted lips, and “bruises all over my body.” Asked how frequently he was physical with her, she responded, “Too frequently.”
How the ‘Freak Offs’ turned into a ‘job’
Early in their relationship, Combs proposed the provocatively named “Freak Offs” in which he would watch her have sex with another man while he pleasured himself, a form of sexual voyeurism, Ventura testified.
Each “Freak Off” would usually consist of two to three sexual sessions – each session lasting an hour to three hours – and could involve three or four different men, she explained.
“It’s his fantasy. He was controlling the whole situation, he was directing it,” she said.
The “Freak Offs” became almost weekly, she testified, and stretched until 2017 or 2018. When Ventura “gently” brought up not wanting to do them anymore, Combs was dismissive, she said.
“It got to a point where I just didn’t feel like I had much of a choice, didn’t really know what ‘no’ could be or what ‘no’ could turn into,” she testified.
“Sean controlled a lot of my life, whether it was (my) career, the way I dressed, like everything, everything. And I just didn’t feel like I had much say in it at that time, being really super young, naive, total people pleaser,” she said. “I didn’t know if he would be upset enough to be violent or if he would write me off and just not want to be with me at all.”
She testified she took “all kinds” of drugs provided by Combs or his staff at the “Freak Offs” as a way of dissociating and numbing herself. At a certain point, a “big chunk of her life” was spent recovering from taking drugs and dehydration stemming from the “Freak Offs,” she said.
“The ‘Freak Offs’ became a job, where there was no space to do anything else but to recover and just try to feel normal again,” she said.
Ventura breaks down in tears
Ventura stoically described the sexual acts that occurred during “Freak Offs” but eventually broke down when she was asked how she felt about them.
“I felt disgusting, I was humiliated,” Ventura said. “I didn’t have the words to put together at the time how horrible I really felt, and I couldn’t talk to anybody about it.”
When asked what she enjoyed, if anything, about the “Freak Offs,” Ventura broke down into tears.
“The time spent with him,” she said. “As sad as it was, I thought that like it was (the) only time I could get.”
Hotel assault came after she tried to leave a ‘Freak Off’
The central evidence in the trial so far has been surveillance video showing Combs beating and kicking Ventura in a Los Angeles hotel in 2016, and in court she offered more details on what led to that incident.
At some point the “Freak Off” turned violent
“I’m not sure what happened, but I got hit by Sean and I had a black eye, and at that point all I could think about was getting out of there safely,” she said.
The attack came after she attempted to leave a “Freak Off” before it was “over,” she testified.
“It got violent and I chose to leave,” Ventura said. “Sean followed me into the hallway by the elevators, he grabbed me, threw me on the ground, kicked me, tried to drag me back to the room, took my stuff.”
Ventura said she grabbed her belongings and “ran out as fast as I could,” without putting her shoes on, while Combs was in the shower.
She said he had beat her in that same way seen on the surveillance video “too many (times) to count.”
“Are there occasions when you tried to fight back when Sean hit you?” the prosecutor asked.
“No,” Ventura said.
Video of the attack was first published by CNN last year. The jury has viewed surveillance footage of the attack at least five times in the trial so far.
Some ‘Freak Offs’ were arranged across state lines
Some of Ventura’s testimony touched on the role that Combs’ employees and staff played in the “Freak Offs” – a key part of the prosecution’s allegation that he and his inner circle constituted a criminal enterprise.
She testified Combs’ staff would sometimes book the hotel rooms for the “Freak Offs,” and that Combs told her which escorts to hire. Ventura said he paid them in cash and facilitated the escorts’ travel to wherever the couple was at the time.
Ventura said she found the escorts online and then would show them to Combs for him to approve. Escorts were paid between $1,500 and $6,000 after the “Freak Offs” in cash that was provided by Combs, she said.
Some of the escorts participated in “Freak Offs” in multiple states, according to Ventura. When she needed to fly in an escort for a “Freak Off,” Ventura would tell Combs’ travel agent to arrange travel for a new staff member, she testified.
At Combs’ direction, she purposely concealed the true reason for the travel request, Ventura said. “It was important to Sean not to have (the escorts’) identity known,” she said.
She also said that Combs’ staff would provide materials such as baby oil, Astroglide and condoms for the “Freak Offs,” and when they ran out of lubricant, they’d call someone on Combs’ staff or the hotel desk to bring more.
Law enforcement discovered more than 1,000 bottles of baby oil in searches of Combs’ homes last year, and Ventura explained the product’s role in the “Freak Offs.”
“If he felt like you were too dry, he’d let you know,” she said. “He would say ‘you were too dry you need to put more oil on,’ or ‘you need to be glistening.’”
They used about 10 large bottles of baby oil each time. At one “Freak Off” there was even an inflatable pool filled with baby oil, she testified, and Combs told her to get into the pool to cover herself in oil.
The defense has said the case is really about jealousy, and Ventura admitted in her testimony she was “insanely jealous” of Combs’ other girlfriends.
“I didn’t get that he was him – he was Puff Daddy, and Puff Daddy has many women,” Ventura said. “He likes the company of women, and I had to just really learn that over time, despite what he would tell me just between us.”
She continued, “He made me feel like we were in a monogamous relationship more often than not. It was really me figuring out that we were not.”
The day began with the continued cross-examination of Daniel Phillip, the 41-year-old who testified a day earlier that he was paid thousands of dollars on multiple occasions between 2012 and 2014 to have sex with Ventura while Combs watched and pleasured himself.
Ventura appeared to be sober during these sexual encounters, except on one occasion when she was “slumped over” on a couch, Phillip testified. In that instance, Combs stepped in and said they could not have sex, he said.
Ventura testified later Tuesday that she usually took narcotics with Combs before an escort would join them. Phillip first took the stand Monday afternoon as the second witness in the government’s case.
Some people have approached us to return ‘loot’ – Justice Srem Sai
Justice Srem Sai is the Deputy Attorney General
The Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem Sai, has disclosed that some individuals implicated in the ongoing corruption investigations tagged Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) have approached authorities with offers to return assets believed to have been unlawfully acquired.
Speaking to the media at the Supreme Court on May 13, 2025, Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem Sai disclosed that, in addition to offering to return allegedly looted assets, some of the individuals under investigation have also expressed their willingness to serve as witnesses to testify in court against certain accused persons.
“Let me tell you, a number of people have approached us making offers to return loot, including (sic), and we have agreed with some of them. Some of them have agreed to be witnesses for us against some of the accused persons,” he said.
According to Justice Srem Sai, the Office of the Attorney General is firmly on course to recover all looted assets in line with the current administration’s anti-corruption agenda.
He added that the office is open to accepting voluntary offers from individuals willing to return such assets, viewing these actions as major steps toward accountability and restitution.
“So, I think we are on track when it comes to the recovery. There’s no better way of recovering the money than voluntary recovery. So, if the people are willing to give us what they looted(sic), we will take it,” he added.
He further assured Ghanaians that the government remains fully committed to recovering all stolen assets and will take every necessary measure to ensure that public resources are reclaimed and those responsible are held accountable.
The Office of the Attorney General has since filed criminal charges against several former government appointees, including the former Minister of Education, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, and Solomon Asamoah, former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), over their roles in the failed Accra Sky Train project.
In addition, the former CEO of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu Boahene, and his wife are also facing criminal charges in connection with the alleged embezzlement of state funds.

Local manufacturing industry urges government action on dangerous diaper imports
Hotordze Roosevelt Alexander speaking during an interview
The Managing Director of a leading local manufacturing group has issued a strong warning about the alarming influx of substandard baby diapers into Ghana, calling for immediate government intervention to protect public health.
During a working visit by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Trade, Industry, and Tourism, the executive highlighted that many imported diapers lack basic quality standards, such as branding, manufacturing dates, and regulatory compliance. These products, often waste materials from their countries of origin, are being dumped into Ghana’s market for profit, posing serious risks to infant health.
“It is a grave concern for national health. We are seeing a situation where infants are being exposed daily to products that can cause skin irritation, infections, and long-term health problems. This must be treated as a national public health emergency,” the Managing Director emphasized.
Ghana records nearly 800,000 births annually, and children between the ages of 1 to 3 are heavy users of diapers. Based on current usage patterns, over 2.5 billion diaper changes occur each year, significantly amplifying the risk of widespread health impacts if action is not taken.
The executive further revealed that over 300 million diapers are imported annually into Ghana, leading to an estimated economic loss of US$2.2 million per year, largely due to regulatory loopholes and under- declaration at the ports.
Despite the influx, Ghana’s local manufacturing industry is fully capable of meeting national demand.
Eight domestic factories currently produce up to three billion diapers annually, three times the country’s needs. Similarly, local production of washing powder is sufficient to cover domestic consumption.
To address the crisis, the local manufacturing sector proposes urgent policy measures, including:
• Restrictiton on the imports of non-compliant diapers from their countries of origin.
• Enforcing stringent pre-shipment inspections and tighter port controls.
• Raising tariffs on finished imports such as diapers, sanitary pads, and washing powder from 20%
to 35%.
• Defining the importation of substandard goods as a threat to national health security.
Chairperson of the Parliamentary Select Committee, Hon. Hotordze Roosevelt Alexander, acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and pledged to escalate it to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Ghana Standard Authority (GSA), Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Ministry of Trade. He stressed that protecting the health of Ghanaian children must be a national priority.
The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) also expressed strong support, emphasizing that local industries possess the capacity to respond effectively if provided a level playing field.

Boko Haram dey promote di kain Islam wey be say na “haram” or forbidden for Muslims to participate for any political or social activity wey dey linked wit Western society. Boko Haram see Nigeria as kontri wey dey run by non-believers weda na Muslim be president or not. Dis na according to one old BBC tori.
Even though pipo bin reason say dem don dey weak ova di years bicos of how di Nigerian military and joint operations wit neighbouring kontris dey sama dem, Boko Haram attacks for Nigeria don dey more frequent ova di last three years.
Attacks wey dey linked to di group don gradually increase for di last three years, from 105 attacks for 2022, to 147 for 2023 and 191 for 2024, according to BBC analysis for data from SBM intelligence wey be African focused security intel gathering firm.
For 2025, di first recorded attack happun for 4 January, wen di group block Nigerian sojas for Sabon Gari village, and kill six pipo. Just nine days afta, for January 13, Boko Haram attack Dumba village near Baga and kill 40 farmers and fishermen.
Oda attacks don dey happun evri month dis year, wit increasing frequency and dey mark trend wey dey cause fear, di trend say kasala don start again and so far don dey burst for rural communities and just outside urban centres.

E also say di main reason na regional instability. E say, “kasala for di Sahel, especially for kontris like Chad, Niger and Burkina Faso wey don weak border security wey dey make dis groups to move, recruit and receive support freely”.
E also tok say di internal changes for di structure of Nigeria military don play role. Dis na especially bicos of how dem don move equipment and personnel from di northeast go di northwest.
But di Nigeria goment say di increase in Boko Haram attacks na bicos of how dem dey grow for neighbouring kontris.
Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, wey be Nigeria defence minister tell BBC say, “no look di rise in attacks alone o! Wetin dey happun for our neighbouring kontris dey important. Insurgents don increase dia activities all ova di region and dat don enta wetin we dey face for Nigeria.”
According to di United Nations Development Program (UNDP), ova 35,000 na im dey estimated say Boko Haram attacks don kill from 2009 to 2024. Dis include seven attacks for just 2024 wey don cause ova 200 deaths and ova 300 injuries wey be hike compared to former years.
UNDP say di attacks dey happun mostly for north-eastern Nigeria, especially dat Borno State wia Boko Haram and dia pikin ISWAP dey continue to target civilians and military personnel.
As Nigerians dey face di double wahala of increased living costs and increased insurgent kasala, e dey test di strength of pipo wey dey directly affected well-well.
Harande say, “wetin we go face first, na di cost of living wahala abi di insecurity and fear for our lives?”
As village pipo – di most common civilian victims of insurgent attacks – dey mourn dia losses and rebuild dia lives, dem dey do am wit fear and panic sake of say dem no know wen di next attack go come.

GNAT urges GES to prioritise transfers for female teachers in rural areas
The Greater Accra Regional Chair of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Sarah Oye Owiredu, has urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) to address persistent challenges faced by female teachers seeking transfers from rural areas.
Her appeal comes on the back of growing concerns from female educators who struggle to secure transfers to other regions in order to reunite with their families. Some also endure long commutes daily, affecting their work and well-being.
Speaking at the Accra Metro West GNATLAS Roundabout Conference on Wednesday, May 14, Madam Owiredu noted that despite assurances from officials at the district level, some directors within their jurisdiction are reluctant to release the teachers.
She cited the enforcement of the three-year mandatory service requirement as a major obstacle.
“Some have served two years, but because of marriage, they need to be transferred to join their partners, and the director has to help them. Some are also pursuing higher education, and then commuting from the rural areas to the urban centres becomes a problem.
“So we are pleading with the director that ladies with such peculiar issues should be helped to get transfers to the cities,” she said.
She also commended the government’s initiative to provide allowances to teachers in rural areas as a motivation strategy and urged for the speedy implementation of the process.
“We are talking about the allowances for the teachers in the rural areas. The union has taken it up, and we are also happy the current government has taken it up because it is a problem. If you ask the teachers to go to the rural areas to go and teach, they refuse, because of the circumstances there.
“The government should motivate them so that they can stay in those rural areas to be role models to the upcoming girls in the rural areas.”

Don’t sack Sammy Gyamfi – Victoria Hamah tells Mahama
Former Deputy Communications Minister Victoria Hamah has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to issue a formal reprimand, rather than dismissing Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, following a controversial dollar donation to former fetish priestess-turned-evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.
The controversy arose after a video surfaced on social media showing Gyamfi handing over bundles of U.S. dollars to Nana Agradaa during a public event. The gesture sparked widespread condemnation from civil society groups and political opponents, who described it as inappropriate and a sign of poor judgment.
In response to the backlash, Gyamfi issued a public apology, admitting the act was a lapse in judgment and expressing remorse.
However, in a social media post on Wednesday, May 14, Hamah acknowledged that Gyamfi’s action pricked the sensibilities of Ghanaians but argued that a reprimand should be given rather than a dismissal from office.
“I respectfully submit that a formal reprimand, rather than exclusion from office, represents the most constitutionally sound and developmentally judicious response. This recommendation emerges not as an attempt to trivialise the gravity of the situation, but rather as a call for balanced adjudication – one that recognises the necessity of accountability while remaining anchored in the principles of mentorship, institutional resilience, and democratic maturation,” she said.

Podcaster Emefa Deka launches Menstrual Hygiene campaign
In a bid to empower young girls through education and advocacy, Podcaster/Nutritionist, Emefa Deka, has launched a menstrual hygiene awareness campaign under a new initiative dubbed, Plug Her.
The campaign, which aims to promote positive menstrual hygiene practices, is set to make a significant impact in Pokuase and surrounding communities ahead of Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28.
Emefa mentioned that Menstrual hygiene was important to her because most young girls in Pokuase and its environs didn’t have proper education about it.
“Poor education on menstrual health is causing many young girls to drop out of school as well high rate of teenage pregnancy since many young ladies lack don’t even know their menstrual cycle,” she said.
Through this initiative, Plug Her will drive a community-centered engagement where health experts, youth advocates, and volunteers will interact directly with young girls to raise awareness and provide both educational and material support.
The campaign will feature open discussions, interactive sessions, and a distribution of menstrual pads to promote confidence, hygiene, and dignity among adolescent girls.
“Menstrual Hygiene Day is May 28, and I am asking for support, whether in cash or kind to help us share as many menstrual pads as possible with young girls in my community,” Emefa stated.
She emphasised that the goal is not just to hand out a single pad, but to offer at least five packs of pad to 200 young ladies, as a meaningful contribution.
“This will be a great start if we are able to do that. Month after month, if young girls know their periods are safe and manageable, they’ll gain the confidence to pursue education, engage in empowering programmes, and live fuller lives without fear or shame,” she added.
The campaign is being produced by Ottobi Entertainment, with support from OnePlay Africa, ItsFuse TV, and Kiosk.
In the days leading up to May 28, Plug Her will share a series of awareness posts and videos featuring selected women and public figures encouraging girls to take menstrual hygiene seriously and celebrate the day with pride.
On May 28, Plug Her will host a talkshop at the Pokuae D/A Schools with over 600 young girls at 10am with resource persons.

‘We want to properly organise the Shatta Wale UK concert’ – Akwaaba UK CEO
Dennis Tawiah is an event promoter and CEO of Akwaaba UK
Event promoter and CEO of Akwaaba UK, Dennis Tawiah, has clarified why the highly anticipated UK concert with dancehall musician Shatta Wale did not take place as initially scheduled.
Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM on May 14, 2025, Dennis explained that the decision to postpone the event was due to inadequate planning following an overwhelming response from the public after the concert’s announcement.
“We had a proposed plan to host Shatta Wale in the UK and the proposed date which came out was on May 11 but the response we received from the general public was overwhelming so we decided to sit back and replan properly.
“Let me say we never sold any ticket. No ticket was sold. Not a single ticket was sold. What we did was announce that we were going to host Shatta Wale,” he said.
He also noted that Shatta Wale opted to be closely involved in the planning process to ensure the event is done right.
“Shatta Wale wants to be actively involved in this particular promotion. So he has asked all the production team to come to Ghana for proper planning, a new date, and a different venue as well.
“Yes we made the announcement but we never sold any ticket. Shatta Wale wants to feel it himself. He said if it’s not right he won’t do it… As I speak to you there is a team in Ghana sitting down with Shatta Wale and planning. Very soon there is going to be a new announcement,” he added.

Ghana’s local currency has recorded marginal gains against major trading currencies, particularly the US dollar, at some forex bureaus.
In its daily update, the Central Bank noted that the cedi is trading at a buying price of GH¢12.59 and a selling price of GH¢12.60 to a dollar.
The British pound is being bought at GH¢16.73 and sold at GH¢16.73, while the euro trades at a buying price of GH¢14.07 and a selling price of GH¢14.09.
Users on X have expressed their surprise and admiration for the government’s efforts in sustaining the momentum.
They are, however, skeptical about how long the gains can be sustained.
Checks by GhanaWeb Business on May 14, 2025, at 08:00 AM indicated that the cedi is trading at GH¢13.85 to the dollar, while the pound is trading at GH¢18.70 at some major forex bureaus across the country.
Additionally, the euro is trading at GH¢16.00 on the retail market.
Users also want to see the reflection of the appreciation of the cedi in the prices of goods and services.

Just make it GHC 10 and keep it stable for the next 3 years and you’re very likely to win the next election.
No Ghanaian can boast that NPP is better than NDC in economic management.
The evidence is clear. We can call the past team the best economic mismanagement team. https://t.co/siucLX9e00— Seth Doe Esq (@seth_doe22) May 14, 2025

Kasoa NDC executives criticise MP over alleged disregard of constituency executives
There is growing tension in the Awutu Senya East Constituency among members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over appointment allocations.
Amid the tension, party members had warned that the NDC risks the parliamentary seat for only one term if matters were not addressed.
Member of Parliament (MP) for the Constituency, Mrs. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, has been accused of sidelining constituency executives in decision-making, employing divide-and-rule tactics, disregarding party structures, and misallocating appointment slots.
Black Satellites’ U-20 World Cup Hopes End In Penalty Shootout Loss To Egypt
Ghana’s Black Satellites were eliminated from the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations after a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to host nation Egypt on Monday, at the New Suez Stadium, ending their bid to return to the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
The Satellites entered the quarterfinal unbeaten, having topped Group C with seven points. Forward Jerry Afriyie returned to the starting lineup to bolster the attack, but Ghana struggled to convert early dominance into goals.
Egypt took the lead in the 19th minute after a defensive mix-up between Dacosta Antwi and goalkeeper Gidios Aseako allowed Momen Sherif to score. Sherif added a second nine minutes later with a brilliant solo run
Ghana responded just before halftime, as Abdul Aziz Issah fired home a spectacular long-range strike to reduce the deficit. The Black Satellites equalised in the second half and pushed for a winner, but the match went into extra time.
A turning point came in the second period of extra time when Aaron Essel was sent off for a late challenge. Despite being down to 10 men, Ghana held on to force penalties.
In the shootout, Egypt converted all five spot-kicks. Ghana’s only miss came from Antwi, handing the hosts a 5-4 win.
The result ends Ghana’s quest for a first U-20 World Cup appearance since 2015.
Lecturer blasts politicians for hypocrisy over Sammy Gyamfi’s dollar gift saga
Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has criticised politicians for what he describes as sheer hypocrisy in their handling of the controversy involving a dollar gift from NDC Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi to self-styled evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.
Speaking on JoyNews’ , Dr. Asah-Asante described the situation as unfortunate but cautioned against treating it in isolation.
“It is unfortunate that what happened has happened. It is borne out of indiscretion—nothing more, nothing less. So my view is that the government will investigate and take an appropriate decision on that,” he stated.
He acknowledged Sammy Gyamfi’s public apology, describing it as a step in the right direction.
“Once you do that, it shows remorse. You have to show remorse, and it’s in there. There is also the fact that you have weighed your actions and, for that matter, you want to assure the public that there will not be a repeat of such an action,” he explained.
Dr. Asah-Asante noted that accepting responsibility voluntarily is a key part of good governance.
“It is a fine thing in politics that once you realise that you have gone wrong, you, on your own volition, come out to say that you are wrong. That is in line with governance processes.”
However, he said the larger issue lies in the double standards that characterise Ghanaian political life.
“Another issue that I can find in this area is the issue of hypocrisy in Ghanaian politics. I am not saying this to defend Sammy Gyamfi or whoever, but the hypocrisy here is that if you look at people giving gifts to their followers or their party people, look, a lot of political parties and politicians are guilty in this country.”
He cited a common practice among MPs that goes unchallenged.
“There are MPs who complain that their constituents besiege them in their offices and take money from them. Have we, as a society, commented on that?”
Dr. Asah-Asante also dismissed suggestions that the act would have been acceptable had it been done in private.
“Some are saying Sammy should’ve given the money in private—that would’ve passed. But you ask yourself, if it’s not okay in public, will it be okay in private? You see the hypocrisy in here.”
He pointed to a cultural dilemma in reconciling traditional values with professional ethics.
“We have been socialised as a society to give to the needy, to support and lend a helping hand. But when we do this, we are also caught in the ethics of our profession that say you shouldn’t do this or that.”
He warned that this confusion could present challenges for public officers in the future.
“There is a danger ahead of us as to whether people, especially public officers, can help those in need without coming under fire.”
Dr. Asah-Asante also highlighted gaps in the code of conduct regarding the giver of gifts.
“If you read the code of conduct, it is silent on the giver of a gift but talks about the recipient. What happens to the one who gives, and the person who receives and puts pressure on you? There are a lot of big conversations around this.”
He concluded with a call for national reflection.
“In light of societal demands and all that, I will urge people to reflect on the fact that, as a Ghanaian society, giving gifts or accepting gifts—is it wrong or is it not? If there’s a way we have to look at it, let’s look at it.”
