US judge questions deportation of West African migrants to Ghana

0

Ghana has already received 14 deportees from the US Ghana has already received 14 deportees from the US

A U.S. judge on Saturday said it appeared that President Donald Trump’s administration intentionally circumvented immigration laws this week when it deported Nigerian and Gambian migrants to Ghana.

Judge Tanya Chutkan, based in Washington, D.C., scheduled an emergency hearing after lawyers representing some of the migrants said their clients had expected they would be moved to their home countries, where they fear torture or persecution.

The deportations are part of Trump’s strategy to send migrants to “third countries” to speed their removal and pressure migrants in the U.S. illegally to leave.

Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama said this week that his nation had struck an agreement with the U.S. to accept West African deportees and had already received 14 people.

Chutkan said it appeared the Trump administration crafted the deal as a way “to make an end run” around U.S. legal requirements that it refrain from sending migrants to danger in their home countries.

“These are not speculative concerns,” said Chutkan, an appointee of former President Barack Obama. “The concerns are real enough that the United States government agrees they shouldn’t be sent back to their home country.”

Still, Chutkan said it was not immediately clear what actions she could take or whether the case should go before a Boston-based judge hearing a broader case over such removals.

A lawsuit filed Friday on behalf of five of the migrants said they were taken from a Louisiana immigration detention centre, shackled, and put on a U.S. military plane without being told their destination. Several migrants on the flight were placed in straitjackets for 16 hours, the complaint said.

The five plaintiffs had U.S. legal protections against deportation to their home countries, the lawsuit said. One of the migrants, a bisexual man, has already been sent to Gambia and was in hiding, it said. The other four have been held in squalid conditions in an open-air detention facility operated by the Ghanaian military, it said.

In a court filing, the U.S. Department of Justice said it no longer had custody of the migrants, that the court lacked authority to intervene in diplomatic actions, and that a Supreme Court decision in June allowed the government to send migrants to nations other than their country of citizenship.

Plaintiffs are represented by two advocacy groups, the American Civil Liberties Union and Asian Americans Advancing Justice.

The deportations have sparked criticism in Ghana.

In a statement on Friday, opposition lawmakers called for the agreement to be suspended, saying it should have been approved by Ghana’s National Assembly.

The deal “risks our country being perceived as aligning itself with the U.S. government’s current immigration enforcement regime, one which has been criticised as harsh and discriminatory,” the statement said.

A Ghana government spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ghana Sports Minister Questions Otto Addo’s Future

0

Kofi Adams
Kofi Adams

Ghana’s Sports Minister Kofi Adams has publicly expressed dissatisfaction with Black Stars coach Otto Addo’s performance, raising serious questions about the German-born tactician’s future ahead of crucial World Cup qualifiers.

Adams voiced frustration over the output of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, warning that Ghana’s World Cup qualification campaign remains on shaky ground. The minister’s criticism follows mixed results in recent international fixtures, including a disappointing 1-1 draw against Chad that sparked widespread calls for coaching changes.

Speaking in a candid interview with Accra-based Citi FM, Adams questioned how long the current arrangement could continue. “If I tell you I am impressed, then it means I do not know my job. I am not,” Adams stated. He acknowledged that Addo accepts responsibility for poor performances but questioned the sustainability of repeated apologies without tangible improvement.

The timing of Adams’ comments adds pressure to Ghana’s World Cup qualification hopes. Ghana currently leads Group I with 19 points after beating Mali on Monday, but Madagascar trails by just three points with Comoros still in contention for first place. The Black Stars need positive results in their remaining fixtures to secure direct qualification for the 2026 tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Ghana’s absence from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco has intensified scrutiny on the technical team. Addo, 49, was reappointed in March 2024 on a three-year contract but has faced intense criticism after failing to guide the team to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The failure to qualify for the continental showpiece marked a significant setback for Ghanaian football.

The Sports Minister emphasized the precarious nature of Ghana’s World Cup qualification, noting that the team cannot afford complacency despite their current group position. “We have not even qualified for the World Cup yet. We still need a win and at least a draw to comfortably say that, as far as our group is concerned, nobody can overtake us,” Adams explained.

Recent reports suggest some players have lost confidence in Addo due to uncertainty over his future tenure. This development could complicate team dynamics during the crucial final stages of qualification.

The Ghana Football Association has yet to respond officially to the minister’s comments. However, the association has previously shown support for Addo despite disappointing results, suggesting internal discussions about the coaching situation may intensify following Adams’ public criticism.

Ghana’s next World Cup qualifier fixtures will likely determine both the team’s tournament prospects and Addo’s coaching future. With Madagascar and Comoros remaining competitive threats in Group I, the Black Stars face a challenging path to secure their place at the expanded 2026 World Cup.

The debate over Ghana’s coaching direction reflects broader concerns about the national team’s trajectory after years of underperformance in major tournaments. As qualification hangs in the balance, pressure continues mounting on both the technical team and football administrators to deliver results that match Ghana’s historical pedigree in African football.

Kwesi Arthur lights up Wassa Nkonya with rhythmic magic

Kwesi Arthur is a musician Kwesi Arthur is a musician

Beneath a sky dusted with stars, in a night that transcended mere performance and became a cultural baptism of rhythm and raw energy, the bustling town of Wassa Nkonya was forever etched into the annals of Ghanaian entertainment history.

On July 27, 2025, the Nhyiraba Hotel grounds shook to their very foundation as SPYY Entertainment, in a powerful alliance with Jonamass Travel and Tours, delivered an unforgettable FIESTA headlined by the inimitable rap sensation, Kwesi Arthur.

The air, thick with anticipation and the sweet scent of night-blooming flowers, crackled with a palpable electricity long before the first beat dropped.

A sea of eager fans flooded the venue, their collective energy creating a pressure cooker of excitement that was just waiting to explode.

And explode it did, the moment the man of the hour emerged from the shadows.

Bathed in the pulsating glow of stage lights, Kwesi Arthur, a figure of pure artistic swagger, commanded the stage with the effortless cool of a modern-day king.

Dressed in an outfit that perfectly blended streetwise elegance with authentic Ghanaian flair, he stood before his people, not just as a star from the big city, but as a prodigal son returning with the ultimate gift: an electrifying, hit-laden performance.

DStv Saga: ‘Removing Akwaaba Magic could hurt Ghana’s film industry’ – Gloria Sarfo

He didn’t just perform; he conducted a symphony of chaos and joy. From the opening bars of the anthemic “Grind Day (Remix)”, the crowd erupted into a single, moving organism. He took them on a visceral journey through his discography, weaving tales of struggle and success with tracks like “Don’t Keep Me Waiting” and “Victory”.

Each song was a trigger, unleashing waves of ecstatic dancing that lasted from the first chord to the very last.

Arthur’s stage presence was hypnotic. He moved with a rhythmic precision, often pausing to lock eyes with adoring fans, sharing a moment of pure connection before diving back into the frenzy.

His voice, a distinctive blend of melodic flow and razor-sharp rap delivery, cut through the night air, and the crowd roared every word back to him, a testament to his deep connection with his audience.

When the final notes of what was supposed to be the last song faded, the arena refused to let him go. The deafening, unified chant of “Encore! En-cooore!” was not a request but a demand — a primal need for the magic to continue. Kwesi Arthur, feeding off their insatiable energy, returned to the stage with a grin, delivering one final, explosive medley that sealed the night’s legendary status.

As the crowds spilled out into the Wassa Nkonya streets in the early hours of the morning, drenched in sweat and buzzing with adrenaline, the reviews were unanimous.

“We have never seen anything like this here,” exclaimed Ama Serwaa, a local teacher, her face still beaming with joy. “For Spyy Entertainment to bring an artist of his caliber to our community… it’s unbelievable. Every cedi was worth it. This is exactly what we needed.”

Another reveler, a businessman Ernest Amo, echoed the sentiment. “Kwesi Arthur didn’t come to perform; he came to give us an experience. SPYY Entertainment has set a new standard. This ‘FIESTA’ was more than a concert; it was a statement.”

SPYY Entertainment, has proved that world-class entertainment knows no zip code. By bringing a top-tier, critically acclaimed artist like Kwesi Arthur — a man consistently rated as one of the most influential voices of his generation — to the heart of Wassa Nkonya, they didn’t just throw a party. They sparked a movement, proving that the pulse of Ghana’s vibrant music scene beats strongest when it resonates in the very communities that inspire it.

The echoes of the FIESTA have faded, but the memory burns bright. Wassa Nkonya was treated to a masterclass, and the message is clear: when SPYY Entertainment promises a treat, they deliver nothing less than pure, unadulterated magic.

‘IMF, World Bank share blame for Ghana’s currency problems’ – Martin Kpebu

0

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has placed part of the blame for Ghana’s currency challenges on the Bretton Woods institutions, the IMF and World Bank.

Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points on September 13, 2025, he argued that the Bank of Ghana (BoG) must continue intervening in the local currency market, even after the current International Monetary Fund (IMF) program concludes.

Kpebu’s comments came in response to fellow panelist Professor Godfred Bokpin and amid ongoing discussions about managing the cedi-dollar exchange rate.

He insisted that currency intervention is a long-standing and necessary practice for nations, citing the historical US-China currency wars as a prime example.

He explained that China consistently fixed its currency over two decades to make its exports cheaper and become a global economic force, a strategy that ultimately led the US to accumulate significant debt to China.

“As for intervention, as I’ve said, I’ve grown to appreciate it over two decades or so,” he remarked, drawing on his experience from business school.

Ghana ranks 5th in Africa for IMF debt

The lawyer also sharply criticised the IMF and World Bank, contending that these international bodies are “part of the problem” due to a lack of accountability in their programs.

“The IMF can complain from time to time, but truth be told, beyond this whole IMF checking fiscal discipline, they are also part of the problem. The IMF and World Bank have always been part of the problem due to laxity in holding leadership accountable,” he said.

Kpebu explained that despite the appearance of addressing root causes, the political dynamics within these institutions often lead them to “scratch the surface” without enforcing real accountability.

Here’s IMF’s latest projection of Ghana’s total debt stock by end of 2025

As a result, he argued, their structural adjustment programs fail to achieve the desired results, while the institutions continue to profit from developing nations.

Kpebu’s comments reflect a growing sentiment that, while IMF and World Bank programs are intended to foster fiscal discipline, they often do not fully address the systemic issues that lead to economic instability.

Much of the early attention in the game between West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspurs was on Mohammed Kudus, who saw plenty of the ball and had an early shot blocked while being the target of boos and chants from his former supporters.

After a keenly contested first 45 minutes of the game, Tottenham Hotspurs got their breakthrough in the 47th minute through Pape Matar Sarr.

The floodgates were however opened 7 minutes later after Thomas Souček was sent off for his serious foul on Joao Palinha.

Anti-apartheid hero’s new inquest should lead to justice, Biko family tells BBC

0

Steve Biko formed the Black Consciousness Movement as a student in apartheid South Africa Steve Biko formed the Black Consciousness Movement as a student in apartheid South Africa

A son of prominent South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko has told the BBC the family is confident a new inquest into his death 48 years ago will lead to the prosecution of those responsible.

Seen as a martyr in the struggle against white-minority rule, the Black Consciousness Movement founder died from a brain injury aged 30 almost a month after being arrested at a roadblock.

Police at the time said he had banged his head against a wall, but after apartheid ended in 1994, former officers admitted to assaulting him – although no one has been prosecuted.

Nkosinathi Biko, who was six when his father died, said the country could not move forward without addressing its violent past.

“It’s very clear in our minds as to what happened and how they killed Steve Biko,” he told the BBC after the first hearing was held at the High Court in the southern city of Gqeberha – on the 48th anniversary of his father’s death.

It is alleged that Biko, who had been subject to a “banning order” that restricted his movements and other activities at the time of his arrest in 1977, was tortured by five policemen while in detention.

“What is required from this process is simply to follow the facts, and we have no doubt that a democratic court, in a democratic state, will find that Steve Biko’s murder was an act, orchestrated and executed by those who were with him – the five policemen who are implicated in this case,” his son said.

On Friday, the judge heard that two people linked to the case remain alive, both now in their 80s.

Biko’s death caused outrage in South Africa and was the subject of the 1987 Hollywood film Cry Freedom, starring Denzel Washington.

He had been a medical student at the University of Natal when he founded the Black Consciousness Movement, aimed at empowering and mobilising the urban black population.

He was determined to combat the psychological inferiority that many black South Africans felt after years of white-minority rule and at a time when anti-apartheid activists like Nelson Mandela had been silenced and incarcerated by the regime.

The new inquest comes five months after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a judicial inquiry into allegations of political interference in the prosecution of apartheid-era crimes.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), set up in 1996, uncovered apartheid-era atrocities like murder and torture, but few of these cases progressed to trial.

Biko’s case was heard at the TRC, which is where the policemen involved admitted to having made false statements 20 years earlier, but they were not prosecuted.

“Accountability for our violent, brutal past is something that has evaded South African society,” said Nkosinathi Biko.

“You cannot have the trauma that we had, the flow of blood in the streets orchestrated by a state against a people, and then you emerge with less than a handful of prosecutions ever being successfully made.”

He said families who felt let down by the lack of prosecutions that had been recommended by the TRC had continued to pressure the government for justice.

“You can’t give root to a democracy without dealing with some of the historical issues decisively,” he said.

The case was adjourned until 12 November.

The Timeless Duo in Modern Fashion

The combination of a crop top and skirt has remained a beloved staple in the fashion world, celebrated for its simplicity, versatility, and effortlessly chic appeal. Whether gracing casual street scenes or making a statement on the red carpet, this pairing adapts seamlessly to different occasions, body types, and personal styles.

A crop top—characterized by its shorter length that reveals the midriff—infuses outfits with a youthful, contemporary energy. When teamed with a skirt, whether mini, midi, or maxi, the ensemble achieves a harmonious balance of style and sophistication. High-waisted skirts, in particular, are a favorite companion, as they highlight the waistline while maintaining a fashionable yet modest appearance.

Ideal for warm weather and outdoor gatherings, the crop top and skirt combination thrives in lightweight fabrics such as cotton, chiffon, or jersey, offering comfort and breathability. For evening events or parties, more structured materials like satin, sequins, or leather elevate the look, creating a striking and glamorous outfit. Style variations abound—from fitted pencil skirts paired with tailored crop tops for a sleek, modern silhouette, to flared skirts with off-shoulder or tie-front tops for a playful, flirty vibe.

Beyond visual appeal, this duo encourages creative expression. Coordinated matching sets exude polish and cohesion, while mixing prints, textures, and colors allows individuals to showcase personality and originality. The right accessories—statement earrings, layered necklaces, stylish heels, or a chic handbag—can transform the outfit into a fully realized fashion statement.

In essence, the crop top and skirt pairing continues to be a go-to choice for fashion enthusiasts. Its blend of comfort, confidence, and contemporary flair makes it a versatile wardrobe favorite, proving that this timeless combination remains as relevant today as ever.

I Will Rate Mahama’s Performance 2/10 – Adu Safowaah

0

Adu Safowaah

GHANAIAN ACTRESS and event organiser, Regina Adu Safowaah, has stated that she’s not impressed with the current state of governance under President John Dramani Mahama.

Adu Safowaah, in an interview, stated that comparing former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s first eight months in office to the current John Mahama’s administration, there is more room for improvement, hence she will score the latter 2/10.

“I’m not going to lie, on a scale of 1 to 10 l will score him 2/10 for now. I have not seen anything he’s doing, probably have not paid much attention to it. But honestly, l have not heard anything extreme he has done that has received massive applause as compared to Nana Akufo-Addo’s Free Senior High School (FSHS) programme. You will mostly hear the current government has reduced the dollar sale to some extent but nothing huge,” she said.

Many have argued that former President Akufo-Addo will forever be remembered for his bold policies which include the implementation of the Free SHS policy, increasing access to secondary education, as well as the launch of Planting for Food and Jobs initiative to boost agricultural productivity and food security among others.

On the other hand, President Mahama, following his swearing-in, has faced criticism, particularly after the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.

Minority criticises government over alleged US deportee deal, calls it unconstitutional

0

By Elsie Appiah-Osei, GNA

Accra, Sept. 13, GNA – The Minority Caucus on the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament has criticised the government, over an alleged agreement with the United States for Ghana to serve as a receiving point for West African nationals deported from America.

Reports indicate that 14 such deportees have already been admitted into the country under the arrangement.

In a statement signed by Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Ranking Member on the Committee, and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Saturday said, “The Minority describes the move as a ‘grave constitutional breach’ and a direct affront to Ghana’s sovereignty and foreign policy.”

It said: “Article 75 of our Constitution is clear that any treaty, agreement, or convention executed by or under the authority of the President must be laid before Parliament and ratified. It is surprising that this government has chosen to ignore this constitutional requirement.”

The statement drew parallels with the controversial 2016 case in which the Mahama administration admitted two Yemeni terror suspects from Guantanamo Bay without parliamentary approval, a decision later ruled as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

“Beyond this blatant Constitutional breach, the agreement raises pressing concerns of sovereignty, security, and policy,” it warned.

The statement further argued that the arrangement risked undermining Ghana’s long-standing foreign policy principles, adding that “Ghana has built a proud reputation for principled diplomacy rooted in non-alignment, regional solidarity, and respect for human rights.

“To associate Ghana with the United States’ harsh immigration enforcement regime could damage our international standing,” it noted.

It therefore called for the immediate suspension of the agreement until it had been laid before Parliament for ratification.

“We demand that the government provide full clarity on when this agreement was reached, the safeguards in place, and the broader implications of receiving these deportees.”

The statement said no future agreements of such nature must ever be implemented without prior parliamentary approval.

NPP Calls For Chief Azorka, Alhaji Wahab’s Arrest

Chief Azorka threatening Masawudu (L)

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to immediately arrest and prosecute the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) First National Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, and the party’s Abuakwa North Constituency Communications Officer, Alhaji Abdul Wahab Amadu, over alleged death threats and violent attacks.

According to the NPP, both men, together with their accomplices captured in widely circulated videos, must face the law for their conduct, which it described as reckless and dangerous to the peace and security of the country.

In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party alleged that Chief Azorka and Alhaji Wahab issued death threats against the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin; National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye; and Nsawam-Adoagyiri Member of Parliament, Frank Annoh-Dompreh.

The statement further accused Chief Azorka and a group of his “notorious hoodlums” of physically assaulting the NPP’s Third National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, during the Akwatia by-election.

The party insisted that such actions by national and constituency officers of the ruling NDC not only undermine the country’s democratic gains but also risk escalating insecurity at a time when the nation has slipped in the Global Peace Index rankings.

“The recklessness of the actions of Chief Sofo Azorka and Alhaji Abdul Wahab ought to be properly investigated and punished,” the NPP stressed.

The party indicated it would formally lodge complaints with the police against the individuals involved, urging swift action to demonstrate the state’s commitment to law and order.

I’ll never condone assault on journalists – Mahama

0

President John Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to press freedom, stressing that he will never condone attacks on journalists in any form.

Addressing journalists at the Presidential Media Encounter at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, Mr. Mahama condemned the growing incidents of harassment of media practitioners, particularly by security personnel at public events.

“I’ve condemned assaults on journalists in any form. Journalists are doing their job, and their job is to bring news to the doorsteps of our people and to inform, educate and entertain them,” he said.

The President noted with concern that some security officers have developed a “passion” for harassing journalists. He stressed that this culture must end through a combination of education, sanctions, and stronger collaboration between the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the security services.

“It’s a matter of sanctioning people who assault journalists. I’ve been speaking with the President of the GJA, and we’re going to bring them together with the security agencies so they can carry out awareness among their personnel. If you see a journalist at an event, he is also doing a job, just like the security officer is doing his job. You don’t have the right to assault or manhandle them,” Mr. Mahama emphasized.

The President assured that his government will continue to work closely with media stakeholders to ensure journalists can operate in a safe and supportive environment.

“As a lifetime member of the GJA, there’s no way I’ll condone the assault of journalists in any form,” he added.

Ghana Launches Groundbreaking All-Female Music Festival

0

She X

Ghana’s music industry reached a historic milestone Thursday with the official launch of She Rhythms Festival, the nation’s first all-female music festival designed to address gender imbalances in the entertainment sector.

The three-day festival scheduled December 4-6, 2025, at Alliance Française represents a collaboration between the Musicians Union of Ghana and Alliance Française Accra, creating what organizers describe as a transformative platform for women in music.

MUSIGA President Bessa Simons emphasized the urgent need for equal recognition and opportunities for women during the launch ceremony, which featured performances by gospel sensation Celestine Donkor, dancehall artist Aklerh, and rising star Maya Blu.

RAM Media CEO Augustine Mark described the initiative as “a platinum platform for women to showcase their talent, build networks, and connect with the global stage”, highlighting the festival’s international ambitions for Ghanaian female artists.

The launch event at Alliance Française showcased diverse musical talents, including American fusion artist Kim Poole and Ghana’s Efya, who serves as the festival’s official ambassador. DJ Nyce demonstrated female excellence in the disc jockey profession, while traditional group Amamre celebrated Ghanaian cultural heritage.

Chairperson Nana Adwoa Awindor outlined the festival’s vision to celebrate and amplify female musicians’ voices, addressing longstanding gender disparities in Ghana’s music industry. The initiative comes amid growing recognition that women face significant barriers in accessing performance opportunities, industry networks, and international exposure.

Distinguished attendees included former MUSIGA President Diana Hopeson, Professor Esi Sutherland Addy, and industry executives representing various music organizations. Their presence demonstrated broad institutional support for advancing women’s roles in entertainment.

The festival’s theme “Empowering Her Voice, Amplifying Her Art, Reshaping” reflects its mission to create lasting change rather than merely providing temporary performance opportunities for female artists.

Key industry figures shared encouraging remarks about the initiative’s potential impact, with representatives from Ghana Tourism Authority, Ghana Cultural Forum, National Film Board, and Charterhouse expressing institutional backing for the groundbreaking event.

The ceremony concluded with Abena Ruthy, MUSIGA’s 2nd Vice President and Gender Desk head, reiterating the union’s commitment to championing gender equity throughout the music industry. Her remarks underscored the festival’s role as catalyst for broader structural changes.

Beyond performances, She Rhythms promises mentorship opportunities, collaborative sessions, and networking platforms designed to build sustainable career pathways for female musicians. The comprehensive approach addresses both immediate visibility needs and long-term industry transformation.

The festival represents a significant step in Ghana’s entertainment evolution, potentially inspiring similar initiatives across West Africa where gender disparities persist in creative industries. Its success could establish precedents for women-focused cultural programming regionally.

MC Doreen Avio of Hitz FM guided the evening’s proceedings, while the ceremonial cake-cutting symbolized the official commencement of this transformative musical journey for Ghanaian women in entertainment.

‘NDC intimidating NPP supporters with political power’ – Dr Bawumia

New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2028 flagbearer hopeful, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of abusing state power to harass and intimidate NPP members and supporters.

Speaking at a party gathering in the Asokwa constituency of the Ashanti Region on September 10, 2025, the former Vice President decried what he described as a rising wave of politically motivated arrests targeting NPP officials since the party lost power.

“We are witnessing what is happening after losing power. Currently, the NDC is intimidating us with power, harassing and abusing us. Not long ago, Chairman Wontumi was arrested. Chairman Abronye has also been arrested. They are arresting our TikTokers, bloggers, and appointees,” Dr Bawumia lamented.

His remarks follow the recent arrest of Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, on allegations of causing financial loss to the state.

Similarly, Bono Regional NPP Chairman Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, was arrested and arraigned before the Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

He was remanded in police custody until Friday, September 12, 2025, facing two counts of alleged “offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace.”

Dr Bawumia stressed that these developments highlight the urgent need for unity within the NPP as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.

“This means that we need to unite so that in 2028 we will come to power,” he urged party members.

Ghana’s Criminal Investigations Department is investigating allegations that an Indian national facing fraud charges in her home country fraudulently obtained Ghanaian citizenship and used it to conduct international business schemes.

Niharika Handa, also known as Niharika Gautam, was declared a “Proclaimed Offender” by the Delhi District Court on August 3, 2021, according to court records. Despite allegedly fleeing India in 2021 to evade 14 non-bailable arrest warrants, Handa reportedly acquired Ghanaian citizenship in 2022 alongside her son, Punar Vasu Handa, without meeting the mandatory seven-year residency requirement.

The case has raised serious questions about Ghana’s citizenship vetting processes and highlights concerns about the country being used as a haven for international fugitives. Documents reportedly show discrepancies between Handa’s Indian and Ghanaian identity papers, including altered birth dates.

Local business partners allege that Handa used her newly acquired Ghanaian status to establish credibility in Ghana’s business community. She reportedly co-founded Gold Crest Refinery with technology entrepreneur Amar Deep Singh Hari, who later accused her of diverting millions of dollars from the company before leaving the country.

The allegations follow a pattern of establishing residence in elite communities, building business networks through social events, and leveraging partnerships to attract investment before relocating, according to investigators familiar with the case.

Company registry filings in the United Kingdom list Handa as director of multiple firms under various name variations, suggesting the use of Ghanaian identity documents to expand operations internationally. Reports indicate she obtained visas to several countries including the UK, UAE, and Schengen zone nations using her Ghanaian passport.

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has confirmed the matter is under active investigation. National Security officers reportedly conducted raids related to counter-allegations made by Handa and her son, though investigators found no evidence supporting their claims.

Ghana’s citizenship laws require seven years of continuous residence and comprehensive background checks before naturalization. The alleged circumvention of these requirements has prompted concerns about potential vulnerabilities in the system.

International security experts warn that individuals operating across multiple jurisdictions present heightened risks to unsuspecting business partners and investors. The case demonstrates how fraudulent identity documents can facilitate cross-border criminal enterprises.

A senior security source emphasized the broader implications, noting that citizenship represents the state’s protection and that fraudulent acquisition damages Ghana’s international reputation.

The investigation comes amid growing scrutiny of Ghana’s immigration and citizenship processes following several high-profile cases involving foreign nationals allegedly using the country as a base for international fraud schemes.

Handa’s son is also reportedly facing legal proceedings in India and Dubai, with both individuals allegedly following similar patterns of establishing temporary residence before relocating when investigations begin.

The case highlights the challenges facing African nations in balancing economic openness with security concerns as they seek foreign investment while preventing abuse of their systems by international criminals.

Ghana’s authorities have not announced charges but continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged fraudulent citizenship acquisition and subsequent business activities.

The investigation’s outcome could influence future citizenship policy reforms and screening procedures for foreign nationals seeking Ghanaian nationality, particularly those from countries with outstanding legal issues.

Board Chairman of Medeama Sporting Club and former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council Member, Dr. Anthony Aubynn, says qualification to the FIFA World Cup is important and Ghana must do everything to qualify.

He made these comments in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports with Ghana on the verge of progressing to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Next year’s World Cup will be hosted in the United States of America, Mexico and Canada and after picking up a 1-0 win over Mali, Ghana leads Group I with 19 points with two games remaining in the qualifiers.

“Black Stars qualifying [to the World Cup] is extremely important; it adds to our reputation as a football nation. Ghana is a football might in Africa and the records show…but I think qualifying is very important to us and I think we must do everything to qualify” Dr. Aubynn said.

Assembly Member Shot Dead In Amansie West Youth, Security Clash

0

A vehicle belonging to Asanko Mines in flames

A tense standoff between agitated youth and security personnel in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region has left the Assembly Member for Aboabo, Samuel Danquah, dead and two others critically injured.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, followed violent confrontations at a mining concession near Mpatuam. Reports indicate that the youth had accused security operatives of Asanko Mines of killing a miner the previous day, a claim that ignited outrage within the community.

According to the Assembly Member for Mpatuam, Kwame Sakyi, the situation escalated after angry residents mounted roadblocks to protest what they described as “targeted killings of miners” by security operatives. In an attempt to disperse the demonstrators, armed military personnel allegedly opened fire on the crowd.

“During the confrontation, soldiers fired live bullets, hitting Hon. Samuel Danquah, who was later confirmed dead at the hospital. Two others also sustained serious injuries and are currently battling for their lives,” Mr. Sakyi recounted.

Eyewitnesses described the atmosphere in the community as chaotic and uncontrollable, with the youth chanting war songs and demanding justice for the slain miner and the Assembly Member. In retaliation, some residents reportedly set vehicles belonging to Asanko Mines ablaze, intensifying the already volatile situation.

Heightened Tensions in Mining Communities

The latest tragedy underscores the longstanding friction between mining companies and host communities in the Amansie enclave. Many residents have repeatedly accused mining firms and their security contractors of heavy-handedness and human rights abuses.

Civil society organisations and local leaders have, in recent months, called on government to address the growing mistrust between mining companies and indigenous communities. They argue that the lack of transparency in operations, coupled with inadequate community engagement, continues to fuel unrest.

Calls for Justice and Calm

Following the killing of Mr. Danquah, some community leaders and opinion leaders in Amansie West are urging the youth to remain calm while investigations are carried out. They have appealed to government to immediately intervene to prevent further bloodshed.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command is yet to release an official statement on the matter. However, security experts warn that unless urgent steps are taken to rebuild trust, such confrontations could spiral into wider conflicts, threatening lives and investments in the region.

As of Wednesday morning, security presence in Mpatuam and its surrounding communities have been significantly reinforced to forestall reprisal attacks, while families of the deceased Assembly Member and the injured victims are demanding swift justice.

The death of Mr. Danquah, a grassroots leader deeply involved in community development, has plunged Aboabo and the entire Amansie West District into mourning.

‘Arrest thieves, not critics’ – A Plus slams govt over Abronye’s detention

0

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has slammed the government over the arrest of the New Patriotic Party Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, A Plus pointed out that Abronye’s arrest and continued detention just because of comments is completely wrong.

He added that even though he has been on the receiving end of most of Abronye’s insults, the right way to handle such issues was through defamation suits and not arrests and arbitrary detentions.

“I’m not saying that nobody should be arrested, but arresting, detaining, remanding just for expressing or insulting somebody, I may not agree with what you have to say, even about me or anybody else, but I will defend to the death anybody’s right to freedom of information. Abronye has insulted me more than anybody in this country, but that does not change the fact that people must not be arrested and detained. If you have issues with people, you can go and sue them for defamation.

“If somebody makes comments in this country, I don’t believe that people must be arrested and detained for making comments. I stand by that, whether the person is my enemy or my friend. I’m not speaking because Abronye is a friend or because I like Abronye. But when they come for somebody and you don’t speak up, they will come for you,” he told GhanaWeb’s Ishmael Batoma.

NPP’s Abronye DC arrested – Report

The musician-turned-politician said that the government should rather focus on prosecuting people who have stolen from the state through corrupt practices, and not persons who make comments on some issues.

“I’m not going to arrest people just because of what they have said. We should spend that energy arresting people who have stolen from this country. Instead of spending that energy to arrest Obama Pokuasi, Fante Comedy and Abronye, people have chopped our money and they are the ones that have to be dealt with,” he said.

He also asserted that although there have been precedents of people being arrested and jailed over allegations they made, that should not be repeated, saying, “We are resetting, we are moving away from some of these things. There is a precedent for a lot that happened to journalists in this country. Are we saying that because there is precedent, it should continue like that or we are looking at something different?”

The Gomoa Central legislator also took a swipe at Ghanaian politicians, describing them as ‘hypocrites’ when it comes to issues of freedom of speech.

“The politicians only know all the laws that allow them to arrest and detain people or even jail people when they are in government — they know every law; public order, misdemeanour, offensive conduct. Immediately, they go to opposition, then they remember all the embassies where they can go and seek asylum. Then they remember that they have been victimised for something that they have said,” he added.

Police provide reason for Abronye’s arrest

According to the Ghana Police Service, Abronye DC was arrested for what the Service described as “offensive conduct.”

In a statement shared on the Police Service’s official social media platforms on September 8, 2025, the Service announced that Abronye DC would be processed for court.

“The Ghana Police Service has today, 08/09/25, arrested Mr. Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye, for offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace. He is currently in custody and will be put before court,” the statement read.

The arrest follows Abronye’s recent attempts to seek political asylum in eight countries, including Côte d’Ivoire and the United States.

He cited political persecution, threats to his life, and alleged abuse of state security powers by the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government as reasons for his request.

‘NPP infighting so intense members may kill each other’ – Kankam Boadu

0

An aspiring National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), David Kankam Boadu An aspiring National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), David Kankam Boadu

An aspiring National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), David Kankam Boadu, has issued a stark warning to the party, asserting that its current state of division could spell disaster for its prospects in the 2028 elections.

The founding member of the NPP believes the internal rifts have become so personal and pervasive that they threaten to derail the party’s future.

In a candid interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Frontline, he expressed deep concern over the animosity among members.

“The rift in the party has become so personal that some people have a deep-seated hatred for each other,” he said.

“People are already fighting seriously. How do you even talk about winning power when the conflict has seeped into people’s very bones? That is the hurdle we must overcome.”

According to Kankam Boadu, rescuing the NPP from this path of self-destruction requires a leader with an impeccable reputation.

“At this point, we need someone who is unblemished as chairman. I have no skeletons in my closet. I have a proven track record. I am a founding father, a unifier, not a divider. I am a trouble-free character, and that is the kind of leadership we need to manage the NPP.”

He cautioned that the party risks following the path of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), which has faded into political irrelevance.

The politician cited the NPP’s loss in the Akwatia by-election as a clear example of how internal disunity can lead to defeat, stating that the party’s failure to come together allowed the then-ruling NDC to seize the seat.

Kankam Boadu emphasised that his primary mission is to unify the NPP, as he believes the party cannot succeed without a cohesive front.

He called on all other aspiring candidates to undergo a rigorous test of integrity and credibility.

“I am the only person who is unblemished and has a clean image,” he stated.

“I have personally received information about other aspiring candidates who have been tagged as troublesome and lacking integrity. But I am the only one without any stain, and that alone makes it the most logical choice to elect me as the party’s national chairman.”

How Ghana’s economy performed in Q2 2025 – GSS report

Ghana’s economy expanded by 6.3% in the second quarter of 2025, marking an improvement over the 5.7% recorded during the same period last year.

According to the latest data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), growth was largely driven by the services sector, which surged by 9.9%, compared to just 2% in Q2 of 2024.

Key contributors to this expansion included the finance, insurance, trade, and education sectors, which continue to demonstrate resilience and dynamism.

Meanwhile, non-oil GDP rose by 7.8%, supported by gains in agriculture and other productive sectors. This helped cushion the impact of a decline in oil production.

Cedi weakens further to trade at GH¢12.10 to $1

Commenting on the figures, Government Statistician, Dr Alhassan Iddrisu said the performance reflects a strengthening recovery and growing momentum across multiple sectors.

“We’re seeing signs of real economic resilience,” he noted.

Inflation also moved in a positive direction, easing to 11.5% in August, its lowest level since October 2021. This beats the Finance Ministry’s year-end target of 11.9%, offering renewed optimism for households and businesses.

The stronger-than-expected growth is expected to bolster investor confidence as the government continues to implement IMF-backed reforms aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability and unlocking new opportunities for development.

Cedi World’s Worst Performer In Q3 – Bloomberg

0

A surge in demand for dollars by companies settling import bills ahead of the festive season has wiped out the Ghanaian cedi’s strong run earlier this year, pushing it to the bottom of global currency rankings in the third quarter.

The cedi, which had been the world’s best performer in the second quarter with gains of about 50% on the back of higher gold prices, slumped by 13.4% between July and September – the steepest loss among major currencies tracked by Bloomberg.

A Bloomberg chart shows the Ghanaian cedi posting the heaviest fall, outstripping the Argentine peso (11.5%), Botswana pula (7.7%) and the Dominican Republic peso (5.6%).

Analysts attribute the sharp fall to the Bank of Ghana’s limited ability to meet dollar demand. Hamza Adam, Head of Market-risk Management at UMB Bank, said lenders are receiving only part of their requests for foreign exchange.

“As at last week, banks that filed dollar needs on behalf of their clients to the Bank of Ghana got about half of their requests. This week the central bank is trying to meet all demand,” he explained.

By early trading in Accra on Thursday, the cedi was down 0.1% at 11.9507 per dollar. Despite the quarterly slump, the currency has gained 23% so far this year.

Ghana’s import-driven economy, reliant on everything from food to machinery from overseas, typically sees dollar demand spike toward the end of the year as businesses stock up for Christmas sales.

The central bank, which built up reserves to a three-year high of $11.1 billion by June, has been cautious in deploying foreign exchange.

In a written response, it stressed its priority is to maintain orderly market conditions. “The cedi should be stable within a reasonable range,” the Bank of Ghana said.

“Our role is to ensure that fluctuations reflect fundamentals and do not undermine confidence in the broader economy,” it added.

Founder and leader of the Prophetic Hill Chapel, Prophet Nigel Gaisie, has issued a solemn call to Ghana’s Members of Parliament, urging them to intensify their prayers amid troubling spiritual revelations.

During an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen program on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, the renowned prophet expressed deep concern over the spiritual atmosphere in Ghana’s Parliament.

‘I see you in Parliament’ – Nigel Gaisie drops prophecies on Malik Basintale

He revealed that he is unhappy with the spiritual atmosphere in the House, warning that without earnest prayer, the institution could face serious challenges.

He has therefore urged both Ghanaians and all legislators to rise in prayer and seek divine intervention.

“Parliament is not in a good place spiritually (sic). This isn’t to cause fear or panic, but rather a call to prayer. From the Speaker to the last member, everyone must engage in intense prayer. I said back in December 2024 that what I saw wasn’t pleasant and we must keep praying,” Gaisie claimed.

Nigel Gaisie further clarified that not all prophecies may play out as revealed due to certain circumstances, but firmly maintained that he is a true prophet.

“Not every dream I have is 100% affirmed, but the majority do come to pass. Some are averted through prayers, while others manifest because no action was taken to prevent them,” he stated.

Why Fifi Kwetey says NDC members seeking overnight wealth should join NPP

0

Fifi Kwetey is the General Secretary of the NDC Fifi Kwetey is the General Secretary of the NDC

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has issued a stern warning to members of his party who have motives to take advantage of it being in power to acquire unexplained wealth.

Instead, he has advised them to rather cross carpet and join the opposition New Patriotic Party.

According to him, people in the NDC whose sole motives are to enrich themselves at the detriment of the country’s collective development must immediately rescind their decisions because the party will not create avenues for them to thrive.

Speaking to a cross section of his party folk, as was captured in a viral video on social media, he alleged that some members of his party were busily engaged in acts that suggested they want to enrich themselves overnight.

He noted that Ghanaians voted massively to return the party to power not because they wanted members of the NDC to acquire wealth overnight, but because they wanted the party to reset the country on the path of economic development and collective empowerment.

Fifi Kwetey ‘exposes’ NDC members cutting deals with corrupt suspects

“They are in a hurry – in a hurry to acquire properties that people who have worked for 30 years don’t have, in a hurry to drive vehicles that people who have worked as ministers don’t have because they think this party is just an opportunity for them to make something for themselves,” he said fuming.

He clarified that it is not wrong to own a property but stressed that the party which promised to ameliorate the plights of the ordinary Ghanaians cannot be used by individuals as a vehicle to acquire wealth at the expense of the suffering masses.

“I am not saying there’s anything wrong with having a property, but I am saying if your motive and your reason of being a member of this party is what you can get, you are in a wrong party. Look for the NPP; that is your party,” he added.

In the run-up to the 2024 Election, the NDC waged a sustained campaign against the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing appointees of the then government of being corrupt individuals who came to power to steal from the poor in society.

The NDC assured Ghanaians that officials of their party will not engage in corruption or corruption-related activities that will enrich the pockets of few politicians while the masses wallow in abject poverty.

However, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Kwetey, has alleged that some members of his party have been cutting deals with supposed corrupt officials of the erstwhile administration.

He has directed all those party members whose desire is to amass wealth overnight to leave the party and rather join the NPP which, he said, believes in property-owing democracy.

I’m not impressed with Otto Addo – Sports Minister Kofi Adams

0

Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has delivered a blunt assessment of Black Stars coach Otto Addo, stating that he is not impressed with the coach’s work despite the team’s ongoing World Cup qualifying campaign.

Speaking with CitiFM, Adams made it clear that acknowledging satisfaction with Addo’s performance would mean he is failing at his job.

“If I tell you I am impressed with Otto Addo, then it means I do not know my job. I am not,” he stressed.

Otto Addo has faced increasing scrutiny over his tactical approach, particularly his preference for a more defensive setup in matches.

Critics argue that despite Ghana’s impressive position in the qualifiers, the team has not been dominant enough in games, often sitting back instead of utilizing its attacking firepower.

The Black Stars currently top Group I of the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and remain in pole position to book a ticket to the tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Akwatia By-Election: NDC Accuses NPP of Sabotage

0

Rashid Tanko-Computer

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of engaging in acts of sabotage during the Akwatia by-election.

Deputy Director of Elections and Information Technology for the NDC, Rashid Tanko-Computer, alleged that the Minority Leader and MP for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, was spotted removing posters of the NDC’s parliamentary candidate at a polling centre.

He described the incident as a “desperate” move by the governing party aimed at disrupting the election process.

“The desperation of the NPP has reached a crescendo. They have openly said they plan to create confusion just to undermine the credibility of today’s exercise. It is clear they are losing this election — all the signs point in that direction,” Mr. Tanko-Computer said.

According to him, the NDC’s posters had been displayed at the location for over three weeks without any issues, making their removal unjustifiable.

“These posters have been at that polling station for weeks without disturbance. Meanwhile, the NPP also has posters in other areas, and no one has touched them. The fact that the place has now been designated as a polling centre does not mean you should remove posters. I am surprised this action is coming from my brother, Mr. Afenyo-Markin,” he added.

Mr. Tanko-Computer further alleged that a venue the NDC previously used for training its party agents was suddenly converted into a polling station on Election Day, forcing the party to vacate.

“The Electoral Commission already has gazetted polling stations, so it is worrying that a training venue we used just yesterday has today been turned into a polling centre. If our posters had been there for weeks without obstructing anything, their removal cannot be justified,” he stressed.

International Literacy Day: Ghana needs practical literacy to preserve identity — Ga Mantse

0

The Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has called for a shift towards practical literacy that not only promotes reading and writing but also preserves the county’s identity and creates jobs.

He stressed that literacy should be relevant to the realities of today by equipping citizens with digital skills to thrive in a fast-changing world.

The Ga Mantse was speaking at the commemoration of International Literacy Day 2025 in Accra last Monday.

“Literacy must be practical. Reading that opens doors, writing that sparks innovation and digital skills that leads to jobs.

No child, no farmer, no trader anywhere in Ghana should be left behind,” he said.

Literacy Day

International Literacy Day, observed globally on September 8 since 1967, emphasises literacy as a human right and driver of development. In Ghana, 7.9 million people, including 4.6 million women, remain illiterate.

Despite the progress, gender and regional disparities persist, highlighting the urgent need for inclusive, practical literacy in the digital era.

The event, organised by a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Engage Now Africa, sought to raise awareness about the challenges millions of people still face in accessing basic reading and writing skills.

It emphasised literacy’s vital role in empowering individuals, reducing poverty, promoting gender equality and building sustainable societies.

Significance

The Ga Mantse further stated that illiteracy now meant double exclusion—both from traditional education and the digital age.

He said literacy went beyond letters on a page, serving as a means to safeguard traditions, transmit history and empower the next generation.

Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II urged parents, teachers, leaders and traditional authorities to embrace technology as a bridge, not a threat, while ensuring that no child, farmer, or trader was left behind.

The Paramount Queen for Youth and Children of the Ga State, NyeAwo Naa Ayele Nobaatse I, urged authorities to redefine literacy in line with its unique challenges and prioritise fixing the country’s broken education system.

She echoed the Ga Mantse’s sentiments and stressed that true literacy must go beyond reading and writing to include critical thinking, digital responsibility and national development.

NyeAwo Naa Ayele Nobaatse I further lamented persistent shortages of teachers, overcrowded classrooms, inadequate funding and untrained staff in public schools, describing the system as “sad and heartbreaking.”  She, therefore, called for honest dialogue, intentional planning and sustained investment.

Digital inclusion

The African Director and Ghana Country Director of Engage Now Africa, Cecilia Amankwah, underscored the urgent need to strengthen literacy as a foundation for digital inclusion and socio-economic development.

She enumerated persistent challenges such as low internet penetration, unequal access to digital tools, and the setbacks caused by COVID-19.

She revealed that since its inception, Engage Now Africa had enrolled over 20,000 learners, graduated 15,000, and provided skills training to more than 10,000 Ghanaians.

Ms Amankwah called for stronger partnerships with government, NGOs and international bodies to transform literacy nationwide.

The Secretary-General of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, Dr Osman Tahidu Damba, in a speech read on his behalf, stressed the need to bridge the country’s digital divide to make literacy meaningful in the modern era.

He described literacy as the foundation of empowerment and sustainable development, but lamented how many rural schools still lacked internet access while high data costs hindered low-income families.

Dr Damba, however, highlighted national efforts, including digital libraries, distance learning platforms and ICT policy reforms, but emphasised that more must be done.

He called for lifelong learning systems that would integrate digital fluency, creativity and problem-solving.

‘This nauseating tyranny will not be tolerated beyond 4 years’

John Ntim Fordjour is the Assin South MP John Ntim Fordjour is the Assin South MP

The Member of Parliament for Assin South, John Ntim Fordjour, has criticised the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing its style of governance as resembling a ‘tyranny’.

According to him, it appears the government is using state machinery to intimidate its opponents, particularly members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), over mere expressions of speech.

‘Arresting people for insulting is not acceptable’ – A Plus

The lawmaker, in a post on X on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, reacted to the remand of the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, alleging a possible persecution of political opponents.

He warned that such abuse of power will not be tolerated by the opposition NPP.

“This tyranny is nauseating and will not be tolerated beyond 4 years. While they are at it, they must remember Power Changes hands and no regime is permanent,” he said.

He lashed out at the government for its failure to arrest and keep their own members who, he claimed, had insulted prominent individuals in the past in check.

To buttress his point, Ntim Fordjour referenced the recently ended Akwatia by-election, during which the NPP’s National 3rd Vice Chairman, Alhaji Masawud Osman, was openly assaulted by Sofo Azorka, a National Vice Chairman of the NDC.

“Kevin Taylor insulted and threatened notable people including judges, chiefs, clergy, president among others and was given state security escort to court in a Landcruiser Prado under President Mahama.

“Azorka is walking free after assaulting Chairman Masawud and threatening Afenyo-Markin our Minority Leader. Chairman Abronye on the other hand was arrested in a dramatic manner, remanded and put in Black Maria to court like a hardened criminal,” he asserted.

Ntim Fordjour contrasted the treatment of NPP members, who he said are swiftly arrested, with the lack of prosecution of pro-government individuals, describing it as ‘selective justice’.

“Pro NPP social media influencers are constantly intimidated and mishandled by the NDC government and their remote-controlled security agencies as if they’re not citizens. It was Fante Commedy, Sir Obama Pokuase, Adenta Kumi, and most recently Abronye. Selective justice breeds retribution when power changes hands,” he cautioned.

As of Tuesday, September 10, 2025, Bank of Ghana published rates indicate that the cedi is trading at GH¢12.10 to the dollar, reflecting renewed pressure on the local currency amid persistent economic challenges and high demand for foreign exchange.

Despite headline inflation dropping marginally, the cedi continues to struggle on both the interbank and forex markets, depreciating steadily against the dollar.

The depreciation is expected to impact fuel prices at the pump in the upcoming pricing windows, increase the cost of living, and likely complicate the government’s quest to achieve single-digit inflation by the end of the year.

Director of Traditional and Alternative Medicine at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Anastasia Yirenkyi, described the Centre as an example of how indigenous knowledge, when combined with scientific research, can deliver health solutions for the country.

She revealed that as part of efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage by 2030, the Ministry has secured funding from the European Investment Bank to upgrade the Centre’s research and production facilities.

According to her, the support will help transform indigenous plant resources into products for both domestic and export markets, creating jobs and income for thousands of Ghanaians.

While commending CPMR for its contributions, Dr. Yirenkyi urged the leadership to pursue strategic partnerships locally and internationally to boost its research capacity and commercial potential.

The Executive Director of CPMR, Prof. Alex Asase, said the Centre had made remarkable achievements in plant medicine research and contributed significantly to Ghana’s position as a vaccine manufacturing hub in the sub-region.

He noted, however, that the Centre continues to face challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited human resources, outdated equipment for advanced research, and difficulties in herbal medicine production.

He appealed for stakeholder support to strengthen the Centre’s mandate and acknowledged the contributions of past directors, especially founder Dr. Oku Ampofo.

The Board Chairman, Henry Rockefeller, described the Centre as a national asset, stressing the need for continued collaboration with the Ministry of Health to safeguard the role of traditional medicine in promoting the well-being of Ghanaians.

He assured that CPMR remains committed to improving the quality, safety, and efficacy of plant medicine to ensure its relevance in the modern era.

As part of the celebration, CPMR, established in 1975 by the Government under the leadership of Dr. Oku Ampofo, also unveiled its 50th anniversary logo.

Ghana: MTN To Phase Out 2G And 3G Networks And Services

0

MTN Ghana has announced its intention to gradually shut down its 2G and 3G networks, allowing subscribers sufficient time to transition to more advanced technologies.

During a recent address at the Digital Africa Summit in Accra, Stephen Blewett, the CEO of MTN Ghana, outlined the company’s plan. He acknowledged that many customers still rely on these older services.

Blewett noted that while many users intentionally limit their data usage to 2G and 3G, others are constrained by devices that do not support 4G capabilities. “Despite the broad availability of 4G, many of our customers continue to use 3G. For some, it’s a strategy to control their data consumption, while others remain on older devices,” he explained.

He emphasised that MTN is committed to enhancing spectrum efficiency and that the eventual discontinuation of older networks will be approached with careful planning and sensitivity to customer needs.

Ada MP explains why she did not get a ministerial appointment under Mahama

Member of Parliament (MP) for Ada and Deputy Majority Whip, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe Member of Parliament (MP) for Ada and Deputy Majority Whip, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ada and Deputy Majority Whip, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, has clarified why she did not take up a ministerial position from President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, stressing that her preference has always been to serve in parliamentary leadership rather than the executive arm of government.

Speaking in an interview on Citi FM on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, she explained that her choice was deliberate and it was based on her understanding of power dynamics and influence within the governance structure.

“When people start crying, why didn’t they make you a minister? I laugh because they don’t understand the two.

“When you are a leader in the House, all the MP-ministers, when they enter the chamber, are under you,” citinewsroom.com quoted her to have said during the interview.

Cudjoe highlighted that her front-bench position as Deputy Majority Whip grants her significant authority and oversight over ministers who appear before Parliament.

Mahama’s Ministerial Appointments: Meet those who got some forms of ‘promotions’

“I don’t know why they say I should leave the front bench and go and be a minister and come and sit behind a leader in the chamber. Let me be in the front,” she added.

“All the ministers that come to the chamber, if I turn to them and say I need this, I get it done.”

The Ada MP revealed that she had previously served as a minister but declined offers to return to the executive because she felt more impactful in her current role.

“I have been a minister before. Unless he [President Mahama] says with your specialities, I have seen you can do this for me, but not to just ask me, do you want it? I will say no,” she stated

She added, “I was asked several times, but I said no. I told my party. I told my leadership. When we won power, all of them said they wanted to be ministers. I told them I want to be a leader.”

Ghanaian businesses to benefit from Africa’s 1st monthly cybersecurity subscription initiative

0

In a landmark move for Africa’s digital security landscape, Virtual Infosec Africa (VIA) and global cybersecurity firm LogRhythm (now Exabeam) have launched the continent’s first monthly subscription-based Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) service.

The initiative is set to transform how Ghanaian businesses, government agencies, and utilities protect their digital infrastructure—making enterprise-grade cybersecurity both accessible and affordable. The timing couldn’t be more urgent.

In the first quarter of 2025, Africa recorded the highest average number of cyberattacks per organisation globally, with 3,286 attacks per week, according to Check Point Software Technologies.

In Ghana and other parts of the continent, cyberattacks have increasingly targeted critical sectors, including energy, finance, telecommunications, and public services.

Nearly one in five successful breaches resulted in the disruption of core business operations, the INTERPOL African Cyberthreat Assessment said in its 2024 report.

For many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the cost of deploying robust cybersecurity systems has been prohibitive.

VIA’s solution

The Chief Executive Officer of VIA, Mr Emmanuel Asiedu Sekyere, said the company and Exabeam’s subscription model directly addresses this challenge. He said the novel initiative allows organisations to pay monthly, spread costs over time, and immediately benefit from AI-driven threat detection, monitoring, and compliance tools.

Mr. Emmanuel Asiedu Sekyere, Founder and CEO, VIA

“We see this as a breakthrough for SMEs in Ghana,” the founder of VIA, a wholly-owned Ghanaian firm, said.

“They’ve long been exposed to threats without the means to defend themselves. Now, they can access the same technology used by global corporations—without the financial strain.”

The service is hosted at VIA’s managed security site at the National Information Technologies Agency (NITA) in Accra and powered by Exabeam’s next-generation platform, which uses artificial intelligence to detect and respond to threats in real time.

It is tailored to local industry needs and comes with pre-financing options to ease adoption.

Impact on national security

Beyond SMEs, the initiative has significant implications for national cybersecurity.

As Ghana continues to digitize public services and expand its digital economy, the resilience of its cyber infrastructure becomes a matter of national interest.

Affordable access to advanced cybersecurity tools could help prevent large-scale disruptions, data breaches, and financial losses.

“This isn’t just a business solution—it’s a national safeguard,” Mr. Asiedu said. “We’re helping build a digitally secure Ghana, one subscription at a time,” he added.

He explained that the model also supports long-term business sustainability.

The CEO of VIA said that by reducing the risk of cyber incidents, companies can protect customer trust, maintain operational continuity, and avoid costly recovery efforts.

“For startups and growing enterprises, this could mean the difference between survival and collapse in the face of a cyberattack,” Mr. Asiedu said.

He noted that as Ghanaian organisations increasingly embrace digital transformation, VIA and Exabeam’s subscription service offered a timely and practical solution to one of the most pressing challenges of the digital age.

“Cybercriminals don’t wait, and now, Ghana doesn’t have to either,” he added.

Burning Hope: The Looming Destruction Of USAID Contraceptives And Its Impact On Ghanaian Women And Girls

0

In a troubling turn of global health diplomacy, nearly $9.7 million worth of USAID-funded contraceptives originally destined for African countries are at risk of being incinerated in France. Currently stranded in a Belgian warehouse, these lifesaving supplies are more than just medical commodities; they represent protection, choice, and dignity for millions of women and girls.

A Crisis in the Making

The threat of losing these contraceptives comes at a time when Ghana is already grappling with a worsening sexual and reproductive health crisis:

Statistics from the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey (GDHS) indicate that one in every 10 (10.9%) adolescents aged 15 to 19 years have ever had a live birth. The percentage of adolescents that have had a live birth increases with age, with 19-year-olds recording the highest rate of almost a quarter (23.8%).

Teenage pregnancies are surging. Between January to May 2025 alone 2,436 adolescents’ girls (aged 10-19years) have been reported as pregnant in the Upper East Region. This is a continuance of prevailing social crisis with girls as young as 10 years becoming mothers. In the Bono Region alone 14,887 teen pregnancies were recorded between 2021-2024. Behind each number, each girl, is a story of interrupted education, heightened vulnerability, and an uncertain future.

These contraceptives include commodities like donated condoms, which plays critical role in reducing the prevalence of infections like HIV. In 2024 alone, Ghana recorded 15,290 new HIV infections with 67% affecting women, many of them were young girls. Limited access to contraception and sexual health education continues to fuel this public health emergencies.

The Human Cost of Inaction

The destruction of these contraceptives would not just represent wasted dollars it would undermine decades of progress in SRHR. Reproductive Health Investments in Ghana from funding mechanisms like USAID has in the past:

  • Prevented 1.9 million unintended pregnancies
  • Averted 793,000 unsafe abortions
  • Saved 4,000 maternal lives

Allowing these supplies to be burned would be a devastating setback, robbing women and girls of the tools they need to make informed choice about their bodies, protect their health, their education, and their futures.

A Call to Action

This moment demands urgent advocacy and decisive diplomacy.

We call on:

  • The Government of Ghana and the Ministry of Health to act immediately to safeguard access to contraceptives and champion the reproductive rights of Ghanaian women and girls.
  • The Belgian and French Embassies in Accra to engage their governments and prevent the destruction of these vital supplies.
  • Civil society organizations, women’s groups, and the media to raise their voices and keep attention on this looming crisis.

This is not just a logistical or policy matter, it is a question of life, dignity, and justice. Bureaucracy and ideology must not be allowed to burn away the future of Ghanaian women and girls, and millions of women and girls around Africa.

The Way Forward

The world cannot afford silence in the face of this looming disaster. Protecting these contraceptives means:

  • Preserving access to essential healthcare for women and girls.
  • Upholding Ghana’s commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on health, gender equality, and poverty reduction.
  • Demonstrating that international cooperation is about saving lives, not letting ideology override evidence-based needs.

Let us act now. Every day of delay increases the risk of more unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and preventable maternal deaths. Ghanaian women and girls deserve better than to have their futures reduced to ash.

“Family Planning has helped me stay in school after giving birth to my son, I can now pursue my dreams of becoming an engineer. Burning them is like stealing that future from me and other girls who are like me. – Adija, 17-year-old student, Upper East Region

This is not just a health crisis. It is a human crisis. The choice is clear: protect the future of Ghana’s women and girls or watch it go up in flames.

Abossey Okai Traders Threaten Foreigners With Eviction

0

Spare parts dealers at Abossey Okai in Accra have issued an ultimatum to foreign nationals operating in the area to vacate their shops or risk being forcibly removed.

At a press conference on Monday, September 8, the dealers insisted that the spare parts trade is legally reserved for Ghanaians, accusing foreign traders of flouting local investment laws by occupying retail spaces meant for locals.

One dealer cited Nigeria as an example of stricter enforcement, arguing that Ghana was failing to protect its own citizens.

“You can’t just walk into a spare parts shop in Lagos and start doing business. I’ve been there. Foreigners only operate at the wholesale level, and even then, the licensing fees are very high. That’s why only a few can afford it. Ghana has similar laws, but we’re not enforcing them,” he said.

The traders expressed frustration with both government officials and trade association leaders, accusing them of neglect and inaction.

“We feel like orphans in our own land. We have leaders, but none stand for us. They keep telling us to register, but what’s the point if they can’t protect us? Many of us are willing to register to help the association generate revenue, but when we’re in trouble, there’s no one to defend us,” another trader lamented.

The group also alleged discriminatory treatment by tax authorities, claiming that while Ghanaian traders face constant harassment, foreign traders operate with minimal oversight.

One dealer shared a personal encounter with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), stating:

“The intimidation is unbearable. They accuse you of things you haven’t done, especially when it comes to VAT. I eventually closed my shop and relocated. It’s been almost five years, and GRA still calls me. They never ask if I need support – only chase me when I try to start something again,” he said.

Harnessing the potential of AI in Africa will be instrumental in accelerating financial inclusion and driving the continent’s digital and economic growth. Strategic collaborations between governments, fintechs, and global partners will be key to unlocking AI’s full impact.

Mastercard’s whitepaper draws on insights from leading African technologists, policymakers, academics and entrepreneurs, including interviews with UNESCO, the African Center for Economic Transformation, and fintech leaders across the region.

Reform educational system to incorporate AI – Global initiative advises developing countries

0

The Co-Founder of AI for Developing Countries Forum (AIFOD), Tianze Zhang, has stated that developing countries must reform their educational system to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI).

He said AI had the potential to help people grow their interest, take their examinations and write their reports with precision.

“The education system needs to rethink the balance between the AI and humans in the role of AI and humans in education development,” Mr Zhang stated in an interview with the Daily Graphic on the outcomes of the AIFOD Vienna Summit at the United Nations Office.

AIFOD Vienna Summit

Mr Zhang spoke on the role of AI in developing countries and stressed the need to scale up investment, noting that these countries currently receive less than one per cent of global AI funding. He emphasised the importance of strategies to redirect capital flows towards them.

A total of 600 delegates from 120+ countries established groundbreaking frameworks to redirect $1.2 trillion in AI investments towards emerging markets.

These markets are experiencing remarkable growth rates of 28-34 per cent annually, significantly outpacing the 19 per cent growth in developed economies.

AIFOD is an independent global forum of more than 5,600 members dedicated to democratising AI for developing nations through strategic public–private partnerships.

The initiative seeks to bridge the gap between developed and developing countries, foster inclusive growth, and empower the Global South to be creators rather than mere consumers of AI technologies.

Ethical standards

On ethical standards, Mr Zhang urged developing countries to localise AI to align it to their culture, by developing their own AI tools with the languages that could better preserve their cultures.

“We are helping communities to understand how to develop their own AI, and we are helping them to attract funding from the private sector,” Mr Zhang explained.

He, therefore, advised developing countries not to rely on the big players in AI, stressing that every country should have a different approach to developing AI.

AI education

He said his organisation was focused on creating a level playing field to ensure fairness for developing countries, adding that AI was revolutionising the work environment.

Mr Zhang observed that AI was depriving many people of their jobs, as was evidenced in the areas of legal fields, medical fields and consulting fields as well.

“This will create a huge disparity for the developing countries, where, for sure, more jobs will be deprived at a competitive level,” he added.

He called for more education in AI management, so that within the next 10 years, developing countries could catch up in AI.

Application or infrastructure

Mr Zhang said the key issue at the end of the Vienna Summit was whether developing countries should prioritise investment in application or in infrastructure.

He said the consensus was that the situation must change to establish fairer standards that would help developing countries enter the AI market ethically.

“We now need to switch from the view of the scales of investment to a more holistic approach, about social values, about the community values, about the cultural values.

“This is very important and so, with AIFOD fair standards, we evaluate three pillars for AI investment in developing countries,” he said and enumerated them as data sovereignty, ethical investment and sustainable impacts.

“So, these are the values that we hope the developing countries or the companies to consider when they are building the AI; they need to think about,” he said.

Future of AI market

Mr Zhang said, considering that the China-US market was saturating, the developing countries were the future of tomorrow, but expressed worry that billions of people lacked computer literacy and also in AI tools.

He said the new market needed education to give them more opportunities and enable them to afford the AI tools.

Mr Zhang, therefore, advised AI developers to make their AI products more accessible and affordable for people in developing countries.

“We hope the companies come to Africa ethically and not just to literally dig the gold and leave the trenches,” he explained.

Tensions Flare in Akwatia By-Election

0

The Akwatia by-election, widely described as peaceful by election observers, witnessed flashes of political tension that briefly tested the security arrangements put in place by the Ghana Police Service.

An altercation broke out near the Akwatia lorry station when members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) clashed at the beginning of the poll.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident escalated quickly after a misunderstanding between Chief Sofo Azorka, the NDC’s National Vice Chairman, and Alhaji Osman Masawudu, the NPP’s Third National Vice Chairman.

Mr. Azorka had earlier condemned what he termed a “provocative” and “disrespectful” visit by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to the NDC office in the constituency, accusing the NPP of attempting to intimidate their supporters.

Minutes later, tensions spilled over into a physical confrontation, with a member of Azorka’s escort slapping Mr. Masawudu before police stepped in to separate the two sides.

Despite the scuffle, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno expressed satisfaction with the overall conduct of the ongoing election, praising both security personnel and voters for maintaining order at the polling stations.

He noted that the deployment of senior officers, including regional commanders and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB), had strengthened the security presence in Akwatia.

“This election is being handled with the seriousness it deserves. Our men are on the ground, and I am impressed with their performance so far,” the IGP told reporters during a tour of the constituency.

He assured the public that election-related violence, such as the incident at Ablekuma North in past polls, would not be repeated.

The by-election, triggered by the death of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, is taking place across 119 polling stations, with 52,328 registered voters expected to cast their ballots.

While the early hours of voting were largely calm, the altercation between the two major political parties’ leaders underscored the fragility of peace in Akwatia.

Abronye remanded over publication of false news, offensive conduct

0

By Joyce Danso

Accra, Sept. 9, GNA- Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, was on Tuesday remanded into police custody by an Accra Circuit Court.

Baffoe, who is facing charges of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace and publication of false news, is expected to reappear on Friday, September 12, 2025.

The court did not take his plea but read out the charges to him.

He is alleged to have made offensive and abusive statements on Ohia TV during a live-stream against the Inspector General of Police, Mr Christian TettehYohuno, to wit, “the Current Inspector General of Police (IGP) has low Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and he is the most foolish IGP in the history of Ghana”.

” The current IGP, Tetteh Yohonu, is the most corrupt IGP in the history of Ghana.”

Again, Baffoe is said to have made publication of false news on September 3, 2025, on Ohia Online TVprogramme, dubbed: “The Evidence”, to wit ” all strategic meetings conducted by the NDC in Akwatia had the IGP in attendance.”

The court, presided over by Mr Samuel Bright Acquah, remanded Baffoe into police custody after carefully listening to the prayers of the defence counsel and the prosecution.

The court denied the accused person’s bail with the reason that his plea had not been taken on the grounds that the police are conducting full investigations into the matter, adding that the police did not also want to breach the 48-hour rule.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Ebenezer Teye Okuffo and Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, gave various reasons to the court as to why Baffoe should be remanded.

Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer held that Baffoe should be remanded because he was a flight risk.

He said it was on record that Baffoe had written letters to embassies in the country, seeking asylum in some countries, including Ivory Coast.

Chief Inspector Lawer noted that one could enter the Ivory Coast on foot, and “if the accused is granted bail, his chances of absconding were 100 per cent.

“This should be a convincing reason for this court to remand the accused person into police custody for us to conclusively investigate and arraign him,” he said.

Chief Inspector Okuffo told the court that the nature of the accusation borders on the security of the nation, hence the need to conduct thorough investigations into the matter.

He said the law enjoined the court to remand the accused person to enable the police to conduct further investigations into the matter.

Chief Inspector Okuffo said Baffoe was arrested on Monday and arraigned on Tuesday  because the Police did not want to breach the 48-hour rule.

Mr Daniel Nii Martey Addo, who led the defence team, prayed the court to admit his client to bail because he was not a flight risk as Baffoe voluntarily honoured thepolice invitation.

He said Baffoe would always make himself available in court or whenever the police called him, adding that he owned a TV channel, which was located within the jurisdiction.

Defence counsel said the charges preferred against Baffoe were misdemeanour and urged the court to exercise its discretion in favour of his client.

Bawumia Launches Ashanti Campaign Tour for NPP Primary

0

Bawumia
Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia launched a comprehensive three-day campaign tour of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, seeking delegate support ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primary scheduled for January 31, 2026.

The former 2024 NPP flagbearer arrived in Kumasi on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, to begin his intensive outreach in Ghana’s political heartland. The strategic tour underscores the critical importance of the Ashanti Region, traditionally considered the NPP’s stronghold, in determining the party’s next presidential candidate.

The three-day engagement aims to rally party delegates, strengthen the NPP base, and outline Bawumia’s vision ahead of the party’s crucial presidential primary. Campaign officials indicate the tour will cover seven operational zones within the region, allowing for comprehensive reach across key constituencies.

The tour commenced Wednesday with visits to the Adansi, Amansie, and Asante Akim zones, followed by engagements in the Sekyere Effiduase-Kumawu zone, Nsuta-Mampong, and Afigya Kwabre zones on Thursday. The final phase will encompass the Ahafo Atwima and two Kumasi operational zones.

Bawumia faces a competitive field in the upcoming primary, with former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong becoming the first candidate to officially file nomination papers for the January 31 contest. Other candidates in the race include Dr. Bryan Acheampong and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

The Ashanti tour represents Bawumia’s first major regional campaign swing since the NPP’s December 2024 electoral defeat, when he conceded defeat to John Dramani Mahama the morning after the election. The party now finds itself in opposition, necessitating a fresh leadership approach for the 2028 presidential race.

Campaign handlers emphasize that Bawumia will focus on party unity and re-energizing the NPP base during his regional engagements. The tour’s structure reflects a methodical approach to delegate courting, with plans for subsequent visits to electoral areas and polling station executives following the initial zone-based outreach.

The NPP has announced new delegate categories for the January primary, with party officials starting registration of additional delegates beyond traditional voting members. This expanded electoral college could influence campaign strategies as candidates seek to build broader coalitions.

The Ashanti Region’s significance in NPP politics cannot be overstated. As the party’s traditional stronghold, delegate support from the region often proves decisive in internal contests. Bawumia’s early focus on the area signals his understanding of its electoral mathematics.

Following the preliminary tour, Bawumia plans to transition into full-scale campaigning with more targeted constituency-level engagements. The systematic approach reflects lessons learned from his successful 2024 primary campaign, when he secured the NPP flagbearership before the party’s general election loss.

The January 2026 primary date has drawn some criticism within party circles, with former NPP National Chairman Paul Afoko describing the early timing as “a big mistake” that disrupts the party’s traditional renewal cycle.

As Ghana’s main opposition party prepares to select its 2028 standard-bearer, Bawumia’s Ashanti tour marks the beginning of what promises to be an intensive period of internal campaigning. The region’s delegates will play a crucial role in determining whether the former vice president can secure another opportunity to lead the NPP into a presidential election.

Foreigners control 70% of Ghana’s market – GUTA president

Foreign businesses now dominate about 70% of Ghana’s market, leaving local traders with just 30%, according to the President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Dr Joseph Obeng.

His comments follow fresh enforcement efforts by the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association, which on Monday began flushing out foreign traders alleged to be breaching the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act, 2013 (Act 865).

The Association has threatened citizen-led action if authorities fail to act.

Speaking on TV XYZ’s Dwaboase programme, Dr. Obeng said weak enforcement of investment laws had ceded control of entire sectors to foreigners.

“Our market is gone. Today, those who deal in stationery and printing are mostly Chinese.

When you go to Chinatown and China Mall, you see many people trooping in and out to make purchases.

Previously, all these cars were going to Makola, Kejetia, Mankessim, but now they are all parked at China Mall,” he lamented.

He added that perception plays a role, with many Ghanaians believing they get better value from foreign-owned outlets.

“We go to China to buy their goods, so if a Chinese person has opened a mall here, locals feel they would be better served when they get to their market,” he explained.

Dr. Obeng warned that the survival of Ghanaian enterprises is under serious threat and urged government to take urgent steps to restore market control to locals.

PRESIDENT JOHN Mahama and former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo, as well as Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will meet at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Thursday, September 18, 2025.

The day is the final-day of the four days funeral rites (Dote Yie) of the departed Asantehemaa, Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom III, who sadly joined her ancestors at the age of 98 after short illness about one-month ago.

Per a detailed programme for the ‘Dote Yie’ of the late queen, which has been released to the public, the sitting President, ex-Presidents and former Vice President are expected at the Manhyia Palace on the final day of the event.

On that same day, there would be a mammoth burial service for the Asantehemaa at the ‘Dwabirem’ in Manhyia Palace in the afternoon, followed by burial at a private ceremony in the Royal Mausoleum in Breman on Thursday night.

The diplomatic corps and the general public are also permissible to grace the solemn event, which would see the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is the chief mourner, sitting in state to receive the large number of mourners.

Prior to the final day (Thursday), the body of the late queen would be opened for various individuals and organisations to pay their last respects to the late queen at the Asantehmaa’s Palace in Manhyia from Monday, September 15, 2025.

Those expected at the palace on Monday include political parties, churches, clergy, educational institutions, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), telecommunication companies, corporate institutions, all recognised associations and the general public.

On Tuesday, September 16, the judiciary, Ghana Bar Association (GBA), security agencies, financial institutions, State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and public officials, Customs, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service and the general public are expected at the palace.

Wednesday, September 17, is the turn of ministers of state, diplomatic corps, parliamentarians, Municipal Chief Executives (MCEs) and District Chief Executives (DCEs), non-Ashanti chiefs, mining companies and the general public to also pay their last respects to the late queen.

Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom III, who is an elder sister of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, succeeded her late mother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, as the 14th Asantehemaa in 2017 after a colourful traditional ceremony.

She reigned as queen for eight years, during which memorable time she exhibited traits of a good leader. She is widely regarded as a queen who loved peace and unity, as she served as a mother for all during her reign.

Tight Security

Meanwhile, the paper has been hinted by some close sources in the Manhyia Palace that there would be tight security in and around the Manhyia Palace during the four days of mourning of the departed Asantehemaa.

Kumasi Goes Black & Red

In a related development, the entire Kumasi, the capital of the Asante kingdom, has been virtually decorated with black and red colours to send a strong message to the world that the kingdom has lost its adored and respected queen.

Virtually, all the statues, light poles and trees on the major streets in the Ashanti Regional capital have been decorated with black and red colours, which in the Asante culture signify a period of mourning and anguish.
