Abraham Koomson unhappy about Mahama’s decision not to seek re-election in 2028

Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has expressed disappointment over President John Dramani Mahama’s decision not to contest the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, August 30, 2025, Mr. Koomson said while many Ghanaians have welcomed the President’s declaration, he personally finds it worrying, fearing that a new successor could derail the progress and reforms currently being pursued.

President Mahama, during a three-day state visit to Singapore, reaffirmed his commitment to the 1992 Constitution, which restricts presidents to two terms.

In bilateral talks with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, he stated that stepping aside after 2028 would allow him to govern without political pressure and enforce strict fiscal discipline, particularly to curb the trend of election-year overspending.

Although the announcement has drawn commendation from governance advocates, Mr. Koomson argued that the decision was premature.

In his view, overwhelming public demand could still call for Mahama to remain in office beyond 2028.

“I think President Mahama rushed himself to say what he said.

“If the mass of the people about 90%, say they want him to continue, as a good leader like him, he can’t look at his people and say no,” he said.

The GFL boss acknowledged the importance of constitutional limits but insisted that true leadership also involves listening to the collective will of the people.

He added that many workers and citizens still look up to Mahama’s track record and ongoing reforms as a source of stability and continuity.

Who is Lisa Cook and why is Trump removing her from office?

0

Lisa DeNell Cook is the first Black woman to serve on the US Federal Reserve Board of Governors Lisa DeNell Cook is the first Black woman to serve on the US Federal Reserve Board of Governors

On August 25, 2025, the financial world received news of the firing of Lisa DeNell Cook, a prominent economist and the first Black woman to serve on the US Federal Reserve Board of Governors.

Cook has now become the centre of a major political and legal controversy following President Donald Trump’s announcement of her removal from office.

She is widely recognised for her expertise in macroeconomics, economic history, and research on racial and gender disparities in economic outcomes. Cook has also earned a reputation as a leading voice on how inequality shapes economic growth and financial markets.

Before joining the Federal Reserve in May 2022, she was a professor of economics and international relations at Michigan State University and served as a senior economic advisor during the Obama administration.

US dollar drops after Trump fires Federal Reserve Governor

The controversy

Trump’s announcement claims that Cook engaged in mortgage fraud, alleging she improperly listed two properties as her primary residence in 2021 to qualify for more favorable loan terms. However, Cook has strongly denied any wrongdoing and stressed that the alleged incidents occurred prior to her Federal Reserve appointment.

What the law says

The Federal Reserve Act of 1913, signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson on December 23, 1913, established the Federal Reserve System, which serves as the central banking system of the United States of America.

The act aimed to stabilise the US economy, prevent financial panics and bank runs, and provide a more flexible currency supply by creating a decentralised system of 12 regional Federal Reserve banks overseen by a central Board of Governors.

However, some legal experts note that the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 does not grant the president the authority to remove board governors at will. Governors are typically appointed for 14-year terms to safeguard the Fed’s independence from political influence.

In response to her firing, Lisa Cook has filed a lawsuit in the US District Court for the District of Columbia to block her removal, citing statutory protections for her role.

“Cause for the president means she won’t go along with the interest rate drop,” Cook’s lawyer Abbe Lowell said during a court hearing on Friday August 29, 2025.

After returning to office in 2025, Donald Trump resumed criticism of the Fed for not cutting rates during his first term. He has occasionally attacked Fed Chair Jerome Powell over rate policies and alleged mismanagement of a multibillion-dollar project, though he has stopped threatening Powell’s removal before his term ends in May next year.

What happens next after Trump tariffs ruled illegal?

The Fed cut interest rates three times in 2024 but has held them steady since December 2024, citing concerns that Trump’s trade policies could spur inflation.

Lisa Cook, as part of her mandate, voted with Powell and the majority in all these decisions. The US central bank is expected to cut rates by some 0.25% at its September 16-17 meeting, though Trump has constantly called for a steeper reduction.

Why it matters

Lisa Cook’s position on the Federal Reserve is far from ceremonial as the Board of Governors play a key role in shaping US monetary policy, including interest rates, inflation control, and overall financial stability across the US and the world.

Therefore, any attempt to remove a sitting governor could undermine market confidence and raise concerns about political interference in an institution meant to remain insulated from partisan pressures.

Economists have also warned that interfering with the Fed’s independence could have ripple effects across global financial markets.

For instance, investor confidence depends heavily on the perception that monetary policy decisions are driven by economic considerations rather than political ones.

What happens next?

The court case is expected to be closely watched, with potential ramifications for the balance of power between the executive branch and independent federal agencies in the US.

Some analysts believe that the outcome could also set a significant precedent regarding the authority of a US president over independent institutions tasked with critical economic governance.

Meanwhile, in recent public statements, Lisa Cook reaffirmed her commitment to the Federal Reserve’s mission. She emphasised that her focus remains on stabilising the US economy, promoting equitable growth, and maintaining financial confidence.

Head-on crash between police van and prison bus kills 14 in Namibia

The president expressed her condolences to the families and colleagues of those who had died The president expressed her condolences to the families and colleagues of those who had died

A head-on collision in Namibia involving vehicles belonging to the security services killed 14 people, including 11 members of the prison service, a police officer and two civilians.

The accident took place 270km (167 miles) south of the capital, Windhoek, outside the town of Mariental on Saturday.

“No words can truly capture the depth of this loss,” President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah wrote on social media, praising “the souls of our fallen officers”.

Namibia has one of the highest road traffic fatality rates in the world.

Home Affairs Minister Lucia Iipumbu also passed on her condolences and thanked those who attended the scene of the accident and the medical teams at Mariental State Hospital.

She asked that photos from the scene not be shared.

“The ministry further strongly appeals to members of the public to refrain from circulating distressing and sensitive images and videos taken from the accident scene, out of respect for the deceased, the injured and their families,” she is quoted by the Namibian newspaper as saying.

She explained that 19 people in total were travelling in the two vehicles.

The police van was carrying six passengers – five officers and a civilian – and the Namibian Correctional Service had 13 people on board.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah said three other prison officers remained critically injured.

“We wish them strength and a full recovery,” she said.

Namibia’s Motor Vehicle Accident Fund urged families affected to get in contact.

The government-sponsored vehicle insurance scheme, funded by a fuel levy, helps road injury victims to get access to health care, rehabilitation and social support.

Its CEO, Rosalia Martins-Hausiku, said the fund would assist with burials and medical care, talk radio station Eagle FM reported.

Road traffic crashes are a serious public health issue in Namibia, even though its population is relatively low, estimated at three million.

A comparison of the statistics from 2021 shows that Namibia had 22 road traffic fatalities per 100,000 compared to 2.3 per 100,000 in the UK that year.

11 Things You Should Never Expect Anyone Else To Do For You

Growing up means learning to stand on your own two feet, but many of us still carry childhood expectations into our adult relationships. We place burdens on others that were never theirs to carry. We hand over responsibilities that belong squarely in our own hands.

NPP raises alarm over infiltration by fake police officers – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has warned of possible infiltration in Tuesday’s Akwatia by-election, alleging that unidentified individuals may attempt to impersonate police officers.

Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, August 31, he said the party had received intelligence that some persons, allegedly from the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions, plan to wear police uniforms and engage in unlawful activities on election day.

“Security goes beyond just men in uniform and all that. I have had cause to put out today some of the things we are picking up that we think the police should be on top of their brief — that some hoodlums from Greater Accra, Ashanti Region are preparing to adorn police uniforms and embark on nefarious operations. That has come to our attention. We are putting that to the police,” he said.

He further urged the Ghana Police Service to ensure that officers deployed for the polls wear identifiable name tags and avoid covering their faces.

“In our meeting with the police, we did indicate to them that we want to see the normal police operating standards where police uniforms have the name tags of the officers, and they should not be masked. So on Tuesday, any masked officer we see, we will count the person as not professional or a proper police person,” he added.

Mustapha stressed that the police must act swiftly to prevent infiltration and guarantee a peaceful and credible electoral process.

The Akwatia by-election is scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

Olympic Medalist Takyi Accepts Commey Fight Challenge

Samuel Takyi
Samuel Takyi

Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Samuel Takyi has agreed to face Joseph Commey in a highly anticipated domestic showdown, but only under specific promotional and financial conditions.

The “Ring Warrior” responded to Commey’s challenge while training in the UK, stipulating that competent promoters like Legacy Rise Sports Promotions must stage the bout with attractive purses for both fighters.

Takyi criticized local boxing promotions for offering inadequate financial incentives to competitors. “Most of the local promotions are not rich and do not offer attractive purses to boxers,” he explained. “If boxers are paid well, they will fight.”

The 2021 SWAG Sportsman and Boxer of the Year is currently preparing for upcoming fights in Nigeria under manager Michael Amoo Bediako of Streetwise Boxing. Experienced Dr. Ofori Asare handles his corner duties.

Joseph “Jaguar” Commey holds the National Lightweight title and was named Boxing Ghana’s Boxer of the Year in 2024. The Commonwealth Games silver medalist captured the UBO Africa Lightweight Championship in his professional debut.

Commey issued the challenge to determine boxing supremacy between the two accomplished fighters. “He is challenging Takyi for boxing fans to see and know who is the best among them,” according to sources close to the lightweight champion.

The challenger trains under Ebenezer Adjei at Jamestown’s Black Panthers Gym while Alex Ntiamoah Boakye of Box Office provides management services. His professional credentials include continental championship success alongside international medal achievements.

Both boxers represented Ghana at the 2023 African Games in Accra, each claiming gold medals through dominant performances at Bukom Boxing Arena. Their individual successes have built anticipation for a potential domestic clash.

Takyi made boxing history by ending Ghana’s nearly 30-year Olympic medal drought with his Tokyo bronze. The achievement elevated his profile significantly within Ghana’s sporting landscape and international boxing circles.

Commey’s rapid professional ascent following his Commonwealth Games medal demonstrates his transition from amateur to professional competition. His continental championship success suggests readiness for high-level domestic competition.

The financial conditions Takyi demands reflect broader concerns about boxing economics in Ghana. Adequate fighter compensation remains crucial for attracting top talent to domestic events while building sustainable promotional infrastructure.

Both fighters’ African Games success provides compelling narrative for their potential matchup. Ghana boxing fans would likely embrace the opportunity to see their two most prominent recent champions compete directly.

The bout’s realization depends on meeting Takyi’s promotional standards and financial requirements. Quality promotion with proper purses could deliver the marquee domestic fight that Ghana boxing needs to generate renewed interest.

‘Ladies shouldn’t date just one man, you need three boyfriends’ – Tacha

Tacha is a former Big Brother Naija housemate Tacha is a former Big Brother Naija housemate

Former Big Brother Naija Season 4 housemate, Natacha Akide, popularly known as Tacha, has advised women against committing themselves to only one man while dating.

Speaking on the Outside The Box podcast, Tacha said women should keep at least three boyfriends, though she clarified that her advice was not about being intimate with all of them.

I will marry again but at my own pace, it’s my baby making era – MzGee

“I tell girls, don’t be out there dating just one man, and I’m still saying it outrightly, you need at least three boyfriends in your life. I’m not saying sleep with all of them, but at least be talking to other people. Because even that one person you think you have…they say the heart of a man is what? Wicked. So you just never really know,” she said.

Tacha also spoke about the double standards women face in society when it comes to age and relationships.

She argued that women are often judged harshly once they reach certain ages, while men are not subjected to the same restrictions.

How some men tactically cheat on their wives during pregnancy – Maame Animwaa details

“People try to put the whole age banter, if a lady is 30, she can’t do this, if she’s 35 or even 25, there are all sorts of expectations. But you don’t see people doing the same for men. The kind of grace that guys have is not the same kind of grace that we women have,” she stated.

She further explained that women should consider themselves single until they are married, no matter how many men they are dating.

According to the reality TV star, it makes no sense for a woman to tie herself down when men often make quicker decisions about marriage.

“Every girl should be single until she’s actually married. It doesn’t matter if you’re in one relationship, two, or three. Because with men, it’s easier for them to meet a girl and in two weeks decide they want to get married. But a girl can’t meet a guy and in two weeks say the same.

“So at the end of the day, it doesn’t make sense to tie yourself down to just one man. Let’s say you’re meeting other people and you’re telling them, ‘Oh, I’m in a relationship, I can’t date you’, that limits your options,” Tacha added.

Police investigate three deaths and four injuries at Sowutuom Homowo celebration

Some officers of the Ghana Police Service Some officers of the Ghana Police Service

The Accra Regional Police Command has initiated an investigation into the violent clashes that occurred on Saturday, August 30, 2025, during the annual Homowo Festival in Anyaa and Sowutuom.

The incident resulted in three fatalities and four injuries.

A statement issued and signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, revealed that preliminary reports indicate a dispute between followers of two rival chiefs escalated into an exchange of gunfire while traditional food, known as Kpokpoi, was being sprinkled.

The situation escalated when some attendees attempted to leave the festival grounds, leading to further attacks at Olebu.

The deceased have been identified as Abubakar Ramadan Sarbah (alias Nii Kwashiebu), Theophilus Nii Amu Kwadjan, and Joseph Shaibu Dodoo.

Four others—Enoch Amevor, Samuel Adjei, Nathaniel Doku, and Frederick Lartey (alias Nii Obrafour)—sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Ridge Hospital.

The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the Police Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

In response to the violence, the Accra Regional Police Command has deployed additional personnel to the affected areas to restore calm and maintain law and order.

The police are conducting intelligence-led operations to identify and arrest all individuals involved.

Meanwhile, the Command has issued a strong warning to traditional leaders, elders, and their supporters to adhere to security arrangements and avoid actions that could disrupt public peace.

We’re unfazed by Global Info Analytics poll – NPP – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has dismissed an opinion poll predicting an NDC victory in the upcoming Akwatia by-election.

A survey by Global Info Analytics, released on August 28, projected a win for the NDC’s Bernard Bediako, who was said to be leading with 53% support against 47% for the NPP’s Solomon K. Asumadu. The poll, which sampled 2,050 voters across the constituency, positioned the NDC candidate ahead in the September 2 polls.

But speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, August 31, Mustapha rejected the findings, insisting the NPP is making significant inroads on the ground.

“Not at all [there is no panic among our ranks because of the poll putting NDC ahead],” he said. “Mussa Dankwah can do his polls for all we care. We didn’t come here to do a picnic. We are working.”

He also questioned the popularity of the NDC candidate within his own community.

“Our candidate is more light up. As I am speaking to you we are in the hometown of the NDC candidate and come and see the people here and their response. This guy doesn’t even talk to his own father. His own community people say he is snubbish. He is disrespectful so they are ready to vote for the NPP.”

The Akwatia by-election has become a closely watched contest, with both major parties investing heavily in their campaigns.

The Accra Regional Police Command says it is taking steps to arrest those behind the violent scenes that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary election rerun, which left former MP Hawa Koomson, two journalists, and others injured.

In a statement issued on Saturday, July 12, the Police confirmed they recorded “isolated incidents of violence, including cases of assault resulting in disorder at some polling stations” during Friday’s vote.

Some disturbances involving unidentified vigilantes forced temporary suspensions of voting in certain areas as police officers moved in to restore calm.

Witnesses said a group of unidentified men stormed the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station in a pickup truck, assaulting multiple people, including the former Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson, who was reportedly kicked to the ground before officers intervened.

Two journalists — one from JoyNews and another from TV3 — were also assaulted while covering the clashes.

Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, stated that the Command is working to identify those responsible.

“Anyone found to have engaged in acts of violence, intimidation, or breach of the peace will be arrested and taken through due process of law,” the statement said.

The Police are urging members of the public with information on the attackers to come forward to assist with ongoing investigations and are encouraging tip-offs through emergency numbers 18555 or 191.

The Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun was organised to break a months-long deadlock over the seat following the disputed December 2024 general election.

Owner of Bama’s Artisan Bakery, Rita Bamah, recounted how her bakery brand was born and the journey that has sustained it over the years.

Speaking to GhanaWeb at a pop-up event held at Nyaniba Market in Osu on August 30, 2025, she revealed that the bakery traces its roots back to 2001, shortly after she completed her tertiary education in 2000.

According to her, baking was never part of a grand business plan at the start. It began as a family activity with her mother, who baked at home every Christmas.

“Bama’s Artisan Bakery started in 2001. Actually, it started as a hobby. I learned how to bake cakes from my mum. She used to bake every Christmas, and I would help her. I didn’t realise I was developing a talent until I completed university in 2000.

At least 13 drown fleeing armed men in northwest Nigeria

At least 13 people are feared dead in Zamfara State boat disaster At least 13 people are feared dead in Zamfara State boat disaster

At least 13 people died and more than 20 were missing in northwestern Nigeria’s Zamfara State after the boat they crowded aboard to escape an attack by armed men sank in a river, local residents and officials said on Saturday (August 30, 2025).

Zamfara is an epicentre of attacks by armed men, known locally as bandits, amid a surge across Africa’s most populous country in recent months of factional bloodshed that often involves Islamist militias or criminal gangs.

The assailants stormed two communities in Birnin Magaji ward on Friday afternoon, sending locals fleeing toward a nearby riverbank that had a single boat, residents told Reuters.

“My eldest son and two other nieces were among the 13 people who died when the boat was heavily overloaded with people,” Shehu Mohammed, a health worker in Birnin Magaji, told Reuters.

Maidamma Dankilo, the district head of Birnin Magaji, said 13 people from the boat had been confirmed dead, 22 had been rescued and 22 others were still missing.

Gunmen killed at least two people and abducted more than 100 last weekend in an attack some 150 km (95 miles) west of Birnin Magaji.

Zamfara recorded 50 mass abductions between July 2024 and June 2025, involving 1,064 victims, according to a report this week by Lagos-based research firm SBM Intelligence.

Sheaga community demands development fund from mining companies – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Residents of Sheaga in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region are demanding the creation of a development fund from Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited and other mining companies operating in the area. They also want dialogue over proposed Relationship Agreements to ensure the community benefits from mining activities.

The residents accused Cardinal Namdini of broken promises, neglect of local stakeholders, and poor mining practices.

Their concerns follow an earlier request for the suspension of the company’s operations—a request the firm rejected. In a petition to the company, the residents gave Cardinal Namdini until the end of September to dissolve the existing employment committee and replace it with a transparent one.

Speaking after a demonstration on Sunday, August 31, 2025, the Secretary of the Talensi Mining Communities Initiative, Toah Gilbert Landola, alleged that Cardinal Namdini had failed to comply with the Minerals and Mining (Compensation and Resettlement) Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2175).

He said repeated proposals for a relationship agreement covering social responsibility, employment, and the establishment of a development fund had been ignored.

He further accused the company of disposing of chemical waste into the community during rainfall, creating environmental and health hazards.

“The company’s operations have resulted in the loss of livelihoods, freedoms, and prosperity for our communities. Promises made during the initial stages have not been fulfilled, leaving us with poverty, poor infrastructure, and inadequate access to basic services,” Mr. Landola said.

The residents also called for the dismissal of the company’s Community Social Responsibility Officer and the Community Liaison Officer, reclamation of degraded lands, and the creation of a development fund financed by Cardinal Namdini, Earl International, and any future mining companies.

According to Charles Boarzor Bazimwomit, a member of the Talensi Mining Communities Initiative, the fund would be used to secure safe drinking water and essential services for the community.

“Cardinal Namdini will feed the fund, Earl International will feed the fund, and any company that comes will also contribute. From this fund, we want to secure clean water. Right now, even you will not drink our water because you know it is unsafe. That is why we demand quality pipe-borne water and boreholes from Bolga to our land,” he stressed.

Kwame Dadzie: Who sanctioned ‘Oobakɛ’ signage change at Nkrumah Park?

0

On Wednesday, 27th August 2025, I saw a post on the X page of the Ghana Tourism Authority about reports that inscriptions on the welcome signage at the Kwame Nkrumah Nkrumah Memorial Park had been changed.

A few minutes later, I had the full press release signed by the Chief Executive Officer, Maame Efua Houadjeto.

Her statement

The attention of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has been drawn to a social media post circulating on Instagram alleging that GTA has replaced the inscriptions “Woezoe” and “Akwaba” with “Oobakɛ”on the newly refurbished Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park signage.

We wish to categorically state that at no point has the Ghana Tourism Authority ordered or approved the replacement of the culturally significant greetings “Woezoe” (in Ewe) and “Akwaba” (in Akan) with “Oobakɛ”

These inscriptions remain preserved and respected as part of Ghana’s diverse cultural heritage. GTA cannot replace or change the name on a signage at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park without consultation or approval from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts and also in consultation with the Agency in question.

The GTA wishes to put in the public domain that we do not know anything about  it and we did not order or approved the change of the name on the signage.

We therefore urge the general public and stakeholders to disregard the false information and continue to support the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park as a symbol of national pride and unity.

Import of the statement

Although the statement initially came out as if she was announcing that there had not been any change in the signage at the Nkrumah Park, a critical read shows she was rather informing the public she had not sanctioned the said change.

So who sanctioned the change?

On Thursday, August 28, 2025 Joy FM’s broadcast journalist Kofi Hayford called the Acting Director of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park Dr. Collins Nunyonameh for clarity on the issue, but he declined to speak.

I have personally called the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mabel Delassie to seek information on the development but she said as of the time I called she had no information to share with me, and that she would make it public once it is available.

But the big question is, why would the Director at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park be running away from answering simple questions about changing inscriptions on a signage? Also, why wouldn’t a whole Ministry PRO have information on it? Why would the GTA CEO Maame Efua Houadjeto hurriedly release a press statement to dissociate herself from the change when no one had publicly said or implied so?

It is worthy of note that even though the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park is a tourism facility and works in tandem with the Ghana Tourism Authority, it is a autonomous agency just like the Ghana Tourism Authority, the Creative Arts Agency, National Commission on Culture or any of the 13 agencies under the ministry. The person in charge of the Kwame Nkrumah Park is Dr Collins Nunyonameh. The change couldn’t have been done without his knowledge. But did he inform powers at the top of the ministry before doing that?

I am not sure we would be changing signages just at the behest of agitators. That is not healthy for our country. Such actions are incendiary! Even if you wanted to change it, it should not be done when tensions are high. To me, that was a very careless decision taken. At best, he could have added the Ga greeting to the Akan and Ewe.

The agitation

The Ga agitators have argued that Akan and Ewe greetings on the welcome signage at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra should be replaced with a Ga inscription. A few days after their agitation, the inscription was changed.

Their campaign was extended to the Kotoka International Airport, where they demanded that the word ‘Akwaaba’ be replaced with ‘Oobakɛ.’

Images circulating online, believed to be AI-generated, show the airport signage altered to reflect the Ga greeting, although reports indicate that the original Akwaaba signage remains unchanged.

The controversy has reignited conversations about the pressure on Ga culture, given Accra’s cosmopolitan character and its status as Ghana’s capital city.

The Akwaaba vs ‘Oobakɛ’ debate

Back in school, I learnt during history lessons that Akan words like paano, krataa, asopatre were of Portuguese origin. These were corrupted versions of the Portuguese words pao, carta, and sapateiro.

I learnt that the English language, like many other languages, has many words that are of Greek, Latin, French, Japanese, Dutch, German, Italian origins.

In Ghana, there are so many words we use across various tribes and ethnic groups that have assumed a national acceptance and usage.

A word like osofo used for a Christian priest in Ewe and Ga, is borrowed from the Akan word Osofo, to mean same. Did you know that Ayeeko, which is a widely used across the country to mean “well done” is originally a Ga word? What about Chalewote, the slippers or Chale the term for buddy? Do we really think about which language it is when using words like dumsor and akpeteshie? And did you know Akwaaba is originally Fantse and not Asante?

What is my point? Language grows. And language is part of culture. Culture is fluid. Culture is sometimes borrowed, culture is sometimes influenced by other cultures.

Some of the words you thought were truly indigenous to your tribe have their origins in other foreign languages. It is even possible the type of dressing you thought was exclusive to your tribe was borrowed from other cultures. Due to migration, inter-marriages, trade, colonisation, and globalisation, no culture has retained its original form.

But let’s ask ourselves: Do the Gas have a point in trying to preserve and project their culture? Yes, they do. Do they have a point in complaining about being excluded in signages of national significance? Yes, especially when they are on their lands.

However, as we strive to preserve, and protect our various forms of culture, we shouldn’t forget that certain words and expressions although from certain tribes, have assumed national value to the extent that they are considered more Ghanaian than Ga, Ewe, Bono, Okere or Dagbani. Having  ‘Oobakɛ’ at the airport is no issue. Adding it to ‘Akwaaba’ is not a big deal. If we could, we should even litter greetings of the over 70 Ghanaian languages everywhere but of what essence would that be?

The Gas are right when they say the airports in Ho, Tamale and Kumasi have greetings in their local languages so the one in Accra should have same. We will be unfair to dismiss that argument.

However, because Akwaaba, which has assumed a national brand just like Ayeekoo, Chale or Agoo, has been used as signage at the airport for decades, we might just have to leave it untouched.

The current agitation has created awareness of the Ga greeting ‘Oobakɛ’ which means welcome. Prior to this, even most Gas didn’t know about it.

Nii Kwardey Ntreh, a cultural activist and storyteller at the Ga Mantse Palace, told me on Showbiz A-Z on Joy FM that the Ga greeting has always existed.

“‘Oobakɛ’ means you shall surely come. See, there is an expectation inbuilt when we speak with the long opening vowel. It’s a future participle. ‘Oobakɛ’ means we expect foreigners to come and live with us,” he said.

Nii described the word as “exoteric” because it is not often used.

“Everyday language uses the basic Ga but within the circles of traditional leaders and elders they still use it.”

He added that in daily speech Gas usually say “atuu.”

Moving forward, there should be a conscious effort to get ‘Oobakɛ’ featured at national edifices that are yet to be established, or those that don’t have already marketed greetings.

Influential Ga people and traditional authorities should start using them too. The Ga land has gone through so much cultural pressure due to its cosmopolitan and Capital City status – and we must all help them retain at least some core parts of what defines and binds them.

Unity in diversity

Above all this, we are one people bounded by common values. Ga man Sammy Odame wears fugu more than some Northerners. People queue to eat fufu regardless of where they come from. It’s so with waakye lovers. Ga kenke has been the staple for most of us across the country. When we are enjoying these delicacies, we don’t question their origin.

I am not for the change of words on national signages that have been well marketed to any other due to agitations for representation. The best we could do is to add up.

However, there can be unity in diversity. By way of showing the world how rich and diverse our culture is, we should be intentional about getting various cultures well represented on the national level.

For example, instead of the Ghana Tourism Authority always using a particular type of music and dance ensemble to welcome visitors at the airport, they could try others.

Let’s break the monotony. We have too many beautiful ensembles littered across the country to be stuck to only one. It gets boring, sometimes.

We should respect various tribes and their cultures but also be sensitive to our national pride.

Gyakie unveils her debut album ‘After Midnight’

Official album cover of After Midnight by Gyakie Official album cover of After Midnight by Gyakie

Ghanaian singer-songwriter Gyakie unveils her highly anticipated debut album “After Midnight,” a 17-track exploration of vulnerability, healing, identity, and self-love that solidifies her place as one of Africa’s most compelling female voices.

Known for her soulful blend of Afro-R&B, highlife, and alternative influences, all anchored by her unmistakable voice and lyrical storytelling, Gyakie steps into a new era with this project, inviting listeners into her inner world with a level of honesty and depth never seen before. The album spotlights her artistry and evolution from a young girl with music in her blood to an artist fully stepping into her power.

Born to the legendary Ghanaian highlife musician Nana Acheampong, Gyakie carries a rich musical heritage, and “After Midnight” is her own statement; a deeply personal body of work shaped in the stillness and mystery of the night.

Gyakie explains why she waited five years to release her debut album

The album’s title draws from the hours it was created. “Almost all the songs on the album were recorded after midnight,” Gyakie shares. “It is within those hours that I find my best inspiration to write. The peace and quiet, the sounds from the birds, the serenity, everything about that time fuels my creativity.”

Introduced with a stirring narrative trailer directed by Alex Piper (Rema, Travis Scott, Wizkid, Skepta) and featuring the album’s “Intro” song, the album includes previously released singles “Sankofa” and “Unconditional,” each of which offered glimpses into the emotional scope of the project. From aching honesty to cultural pride to spiritual surrender, the singles hinted at the multidimensional soundscape Gyakie was building, one rooted in personal truth and crafted for global ears.

The album also welcomes powerful collaborations with standout talents, including 6LACK, Kojey Radical, Omar Sterling, Headie One, Shatta Wale, and Young Jonn, creating a convergence of cultures that speaks to the universality of music and its ability to bring people together.

Gyakie breathes new life into her father’s ‘Nanka Ebeye Den’ song

In a touching full-circle moment, Gyakie samples her father, Nana Acheampong, on one of the album’s standout tracks, “Y2K Luv” ft. Omar Sterling, which pays homage to her musical roots and a powerful symbol of legacy and continuity in Ghanaian music.

Now unveiled in full, “After Midnight” introduces a compelling mix of stories and sounds. From late-night reflections and intimate prayers to sweeping love songs and vibrant party anthems, the collection is the perfect soundtrack to the myriad moods of the hours that follow midnight.

Sonically, it dances effortlessly between slow-burning ballads, rhythmic highlife grooves, stripped-down soul, and amapiano-infused anthems, while Gyakie blends vulnerability with confidence, softness with strength, inviting fans into her process of healing, reflection, and self-discovery.

“This album is about becoming. It’s about embracing all the versions of myself, the soft parts, the strong parts, the past, the present, and the dreams I’m chasing. I hope people find pieces of themselves in these songs,” Gyakie said

Tema water shortage a threat to government’s 24-hour economy

Abraham Koomson is the Secretary General of GFL Abraham Koomson is the Secretary General of GFL

The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing water shortage in Tema, which has left households and industries struggling with inconsistent supply.

Speaking on Ahotor FM on August 30, 2025, Koomson described the situation as “distressing and unacceptable,” urging the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) to act swiftly.

He criticised what he called poor communication and inaction by local authorities, accusing District and Municipal Chief Executives of failing to provide leadership in the crisis.

President Mahama sells Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy as AfCFTA gateway

“I don’t know the job description of the DCEs and MCEs. There is no water flowing in Tema, and they are quiet, not providing any alternative. Are they sleeping on their jobs?” he asked.

Beyond domestic inconvenience, the GFL leader warned that the persistent water crisis poses a major risk to the government’s flagship 24-Hour Economy Policy.

He stressed that Tema’s role as Ghana’s industrial hub requires an uninterrupted water and electricity supply, cautioning that the success of the policy could be undermined if such basic challenges persist.

Aside from the domestic problems, the persistent water interruptions are also a direct threat to the 24-Hour Policy.

If the current situation is not addressed, the policy could face serious setbacks,” he noted.

Koomson called on authorities not only to restore a consistent water supply but also to provide timely communication and interim relief measures for affected residents and businesses.

“Tema is the heartbeat of Ghana’s industrial sector. If issues like water and electricity shortages are not dealt with, the 24-Hour Economy Policy will struggle to take off,” he stressed.

Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, alleged that the court suit contesting the late Ernest Yaw Kumi’s victory of the Akwatia seat in the 2024 election led to his death.

The 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) said this when he met with chiefs at Akyem Wenchi ahead of the Akwatia by-election on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

In a video on X, Dr Bawumia Ernest Kumi suffered from high blood pressure due to the court case, which was initiated by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He added that the constant increase in his blood pressure, coupled with sleeplessness and intimidation from the NDC, led to his death.

“Ernest Kumi got elected in 2024 after he lost the seat in a prior election. However, the NDC did not accept the results and filed a suit against him. He could not sleep because of the court. He was hounded and intimidated. So, his Blood pressure just kept rising. He died 26 days after the court’s final verdict.”

Dr Bawumia added that the NDC’s candidate for the by-election, Bernard Baidoo, was the lead counsel for the party. He therefore entreated the constituents not to vote for the NDC but rather to choose the NPP.

“It is the same lawyer who led the case against Ernest Kumi’s victory who is contesting on the NDC’s ticket. So, I am imploring the people of Wenchi to vote against the lawyer and the NDC.”

GMet Boosts Skills of Journalists on Early Warning Systems

0

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has held a one-day training in Koforidua to enhance the capacity of journalists in the Eastern Region to communicate weather-related information effectively to the public.

The workshop, themed “Advancing Early Warnings for All: Media as a Lifeline,” brought together reporters from various media houses including print, broadcast, and online platforms.

It was hosted at the Capital View Hotel and featured expert-led sessions on marine and public weather services, impact-based forecasting, and strategies for effective communication during extreme weather events.

Dr. Ignatius Kweku Williams, Ag. Deputy Director General in charge of operations, GMet, who delivered the opening remarks, emphasized the critical role of journalists in building resilient communities.

“Early warnings only save lives when they are timely, accurate, and understandable. The media is our bridge to the public,” he said.

Mrs. Felicity Ahafianyo, Head of the Central Analysis Unit of GMet, provided insights into Ghana’s climate patterns, noting that the country experiences alternating dry and wet seasons.

“The southern sector has a bimodal rainfall pattern, with major rains from March to July and minor rains from September to November. The northern sector, however, experiences a unimodal rainfall season from April to October,” she explained.

She added that the dry season, commonly known as harmattan, occurs between December and February.

“Long-term records show that annual rainfall in Ghana ranges from 700 millimetres to 2,030 millimetres, with average minimum and maximum temperatures of 22°C and 32°C respectively,” Mrs. Ahafianyo said, citing data on climate records from 1976 to 2018.

The workshop also addressed the intersection of climate and public health. Mrs. Ahafianyo highlighted the risks posed by climate variability to the health sector, particularly the spread of diseases.

She called for strengthened public education through national disaster risk reduction platforms, including radio, television, information vans, churches, mosques, and other community-based channels.

Participants engaged with senior meteorologists including Joshua Asamoah, Thomas Biney, and Esther Egbuka, who facilitated sessions on GMet’s services and the forecast for the minor rainfall season in southern Ghana.

The training also tackled challenges such as misinformation, limited access to meteorological data, and the need for stronger collaboration between media and scientific institutions.

Journalists expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that the workshop improved their understanding of weather systems and reporting techniques.

“This training has equipped us to better serve our communities with life-saving information,” Ms. Candida Dery said.

The event forms part of GMet’s broader strategy to integrate media into Ghana’s national early warning framework, with plans to replicate similar workshops in other regions.

Deputy General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande Deputy General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande

The Deputy General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of instigating chaos at the funeral of the late Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi, in the Eastern Region.

The incident, which occurred during the one-week observation in Wenchi, nearly turned violent when NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, was reportedly confronted by some NPP supporters.

Speaking after the event, Gbande condemned the development, describing it as an attack on the dignity of the funeral gathering.

“See what they’ve done at a funeral. We’ve taken notice of it, and it will redefine our relationship with them going into the election,” he stated.

The NDC has warned that such incidents could heighten political tensions ahead of the polls if not addressed.

12 cleared to contest Tamale Central NDC primaries on September 6 – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

All 12 aspirants seeking to contest the Tamale Central Constituency parliamentary seat have been cleared by the vetting committee, paving the way for the primaries on September 6, 2025, at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale.

Party leadership has urged the aspirants to run peaceful, issue-based campaigns and avoid personal attacks.

The vetting panel, chaired by NDC Deputy General Secretary, Lawyer Barbara Serwaa Asamoah, completed its work on Sunday, August 31, and cleared all aspirants to contest.

Speaking after the exercise, the committee chairperson commended the calibre of candidates and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to a credible primary.

“I must say I’m really surprised at the caliber of people who picked nominations and were vetted today. We had professors, lawyers, doctors, diplomats, and more. The most refreshing part is that, for the first time in the history of Tamale Central, three competent women are part of the contest.”

She added that the party is determined to ensure transparency in the polls: “It is in our interest to make the elections transparent, knowing that whoever emerges as the parliamentary candidate is already on the path to parliament.”

Some aspirants also pledged to campaign peacefully. Prof. Alidu Seidu, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, said the circumstances of the by-election should guide aspirants to exercise decorum.

“Our most respected MP died in a helicopter crash, and that tragic incident is still troubling the nation. The best way to honor his legacy is to campaign in a dignified and respectful manner.”

Former MCE of Tamale, Abdul Hanan Gundadoo, however, raised concerns about alleged interference by party executives.

“There have been attempts to mar the process. Somebody who has never been a member of the party has suddenly been projected and thrown into the constituency.”

Other aspirants expressed strong optimism. Dr. Aliu Abdul Hamid, a civil engineer, declared: “Amongst all the candidates, nobody beats me in this election. I’m going to win—and win by a landslide.”

For Hajia Mulaika Sualisu, one of the three female aspirants, the primaries mark an opportunity for women’s leadership. She appealed to delegates, especially women, to rally behind her bid.

Meanwhile, Northern Regional Minister Ali Adolf John stressed the importance of unity, urging aspirants to ensure their supporters refrain from violence during the campaign.

FIFA President Infantino calms nerves of travelling Africans ahead of 2026 World Cup

FIFA President Infantino has assured fans of getting access to the US FIFA President Infantino has assured fans of getting access to the US

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has assured football fans across the globe that the United States is ready to welcome travelling fans to the country for the 2026 World Cup.

This comes after it was reported that football fans from Africa “are a little bit jittery” about current events in the United States. FIFA President Gianni Infantino was told at a news conference in Kenya, which urged him to ensure African visitors to the tournament do not feel “outcast … second-class citizens.”

The FIFA leader was reminded he met yet again last week with US President Donald Trump, who now has a gold World Cup trophy sitting in a glass case on his desk in the White House.

“We are going to play it in a country where some of us do not feel welcome,” said a reporter from South Africa, the home country of FIFA vice president Patrice Motsepe, who sat beside Infantino at a luxury hotel in Nairobi.

Motsepe is the brother-in-law of South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa, who had a tense visit to the White House in May 2025 when Trump repeated his administration’s baseless claims of white farmers being systematically killed in the country.

At least nine African nations will be in the 48-team lineup of the World Cup being played from June 11 to July 19 in 11 US cities, plus three in Mexico and two in Canada. Egypt, Morocco and South Africa are likely to qualify in October as current leaders of qualifying groups.

A 10th African team could advance in inter-continental playoffs scheduled after the tournament draw, which Trump and Infantino announced in the Oval Office last week will be held in Washington DC at the Kennedy Center on December 5.

“Everyone will be welcome in North America next year for the World Cup,” said Infantino, whose long-standing ties to Trump got him a seat in the Capitol Rotunda for the president’s inauguration in January.

“I think it’s important to clarify this. There is a lot of misconception out there,” the FIFA leader told a roomful of African media.

Tickets for the 104 World Cup games go on sale September 10, 2025, amid long-standing concerns about fans getting visas to enter the US, which has travel bans and watch lists for dozens of countries. Iran already qualified and will play at least three games at the World Cup.

“I think the onus is on you to make sure that Africa and all the other people of the world do not feel outcast, do not feel like they are being made second-class citizens in a world where equality should prevail,” the South African reporter told Infantino and Motsepe.

The reporter’s identity was not immediately clear — the news conference was carried on the Confederation of African Football’s YouTube channel — but he said he’s from South Africa.

Infantino was told earlier by a reporter: “African football fans are a little bit jittery about what is happening in the US in regards to the expansion of people who are in the US.”

Motsepe, a billionaire businessman who has led Africa’s football body since 2021, insisted discreet work with US authorities had secured commitments to make the World Cup run smoothly.

“We are confident that we will fulfil whatever requirements they may have and there will be sufficient access to African fans in the World Cup next year,” Motsepe said.

Announcing travel bans in June, the Trump administration promised exemptions for teams and officials coming to the tournament — and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics — though the prospects for fans are less clear.

Infantino claimed fans came from 164 countries to the month-long Club World Cup hosted in 11 US cities in June and July “without, of course, any problems” with visas.

“The world needs occasions of unity,” said Infantino, who was told by Trump in the White House last week that FIFA would not be able to organise World Cup games in LA next year had the president not sent troops into the city this month. Eight games are scheduled at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, including the US team’s opener on June 12.

“Be positive, you will see there will be a great, great celebration of the greatest FIFA World Cup ever,” Infantino said in Kenya.

Is incumbency advantage overriding ‘sympathy’ votes?

0

With just a day to the September 2, 2025, Akwatia by-election, the political stage is set for an epic showdown between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). With polling data suggesting an incredibly close race, but putting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate in the lead, the question remains: Is incumbency advantage overriding ‘sympathy’ votes?

A History of Political Shifts in Akwatia

Power has alternated between the NDC and the NPP since the beginning of the Fourth Republic. The constituency’s first elected Member of Parliament in 1992 was Gilbert Kwasi Agyei of the NDC. He was succeeded in 1996 by Alhaji Mohammed Erzuah Siam, also of the NDC. The NPP gained control in 2000 with the election of Kinston Akomeng Kissi, who retained the seat until the 2008 general elections when Kofi Asare, also of the NPP, was elected.

The seat flipped back to the NDC in 2012 with Baba Jamal emerging victorious. In 2016, Mercy Adu-Gyamfi reclaimed it for the NPP. Four years later, in 2020, Henry Boakye of the NDC won the seat. Most recently, in the 2024 elections, Ernest Kumi of the NPP was elected Member of Parliament for Akwatia. The 2024 election result, however, did not go uncontested. Legal proceedings were initiated, and in January 2025, the Koforidua High Court issued an interim injunction barring Ernest Kumi from being sworn in as the MP for Akwatia. Despite the order, Kumi went ahead with the swearing-in, leading the court to find him in contempt and issue a warrant for his arrest.

This ruling was later overturned by the Supreme Court in June 2025, clearing the legal cloud over his legitimacy as a Member of Parliament.

Tragically, Ernest Kumi died suddenly in July 2025, barely a month after the Supreme Court ruling. His death brought a somber end to what had been one of the most controversial post-election legal battles in the country.

A Contested Contest: The Race Begins

With the seat now vacant, both the NPP and the NDC are gearing up for a fierce contest. The NPP endorsed Solomon Asumadu, the constituency treasurer from Boadua, as their candidate, while the NDC has put forward Bernard Bediako, the party’s constituency secretary from Takorase, whose roots trace back to Kusi and Wenchi. David Ankomah of the Action People’s Party (APP) was initially in the race but was disqualified over issues related to his tax clearance certificate. He claims the disqualification is part of a “grand scheme” to exclude him from the contest.

Meanwhile, the two main parties have proclaimed victory for themselves and defeat for their opponent. While the NDC has said that it will deliver a “heavy defeat” to the NPP, the NPP has resolved to secure victory while honouring the legacy of the late Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, whose passing necessitated the by-election. But what is interesting are the emerging poll findings trickling in.

Poll Predictions: A Glimpse into the Tight Race

As the election date nears, polling data offers a snapshot of what could be a nail-biting finish. The Global Info Analytics and Sanity Africa research groups have both weighed in with predictions, and the findings indicate a close race, with the NDC holding a slight edge.

Global Info Analytics’ poll, conducted between August 27 and 28, 2025, and surveyed 2,050 voters across the constituency, showed Bernard Bediako leading with 53%, while Solomon Asumadu trailed with 47%. This margin, though narrow, places the NDC candidate in the driving seat.

The poll highlighted the importance of issues such as unemployment, economic hardship, and access to social amenities, which have dominated the campaign trail. These issues, the survey noted, have been central to the political discourse in Akwatia, with voters eager for change. However, the undecided voters could still play a pivotal role in determining the outcome, either consolidating Bediako’s lead or swinging the vote in Asumadu’s favor.

Sanity Africa also conducted a poll from August 1 to August 27, 2025, with a sample size of 1,568 voters, projecting Bediako with a slight lead of 52.3% compared to Asumadu’s 47.7%. The margin here is just 4.6 percentage points, suggesting a highly competitive race. The findings also revealed significant demographic splits within the constituency, with educated voters largely supporting Bediako, while Asumadu’s strongest support came from the unemployed and informal workers, many of whom are linked to the “galamsey” (illegal mining) sector.

Turnout and Mobilisation: The Decisive Factor

Both surveys agree that voter mobilisation will be key to the outcome. Ghana’s by-elections have historically seen low turnout, and analysts predict just a 48% turnout in Akwatia due to political fatigue and the heavy security presence expected on election day.

“In such a closely contested by-election, mobiliation is everything,” Sanity Africa stated. “The candidate who best activates their base and overcomes turnout barriers will likely emerge victorious.”

What’s at Stake for the Parties?

For the NDC, winning Akwatia would reinforce its position in Parliament and signal continued public support as it heads toward the 2028 general elections. A victory would show that the governing party still enjoys strong backing in key constituencies and could be seen as a vote of confidence in its leadership and policies.

For the NPP, a win in Akwatia would be a major boost for the opposition, showing that it remains competitive and capable of reclaiming ground from the NDC. It would also energise its supporters and strengthen its message heading into the next election cycle. Moreover, the NPP is keen to honour the legacy of the late Ernest Kumi, whose sudden death created the vacancy in the first place.

The Final Word: A Battle for Political Survival

As the clock ticks down to the Akwatia by-election, both parties are going all-out to secure victory. With the stakes higher than ever, this by-election promises to be a key political moment in Ghana’s ongoing democratic journey.

Whether the NDC can leverage its incumbency advantage or whether the NPP can capitalise on the ‘sympathy’ vote for Ernest Kumi will likely determine the outcome. What’s certain is that the battle for Akwatia is heating up and anything can happen.

Bathing daily with sponge could be damaging your skin

0

Bathing is one of those everyday habits people in our society rarely question. Using a sponge often feels like the only way to truly get clean. Yet dermatologists caution that this routine, whether with raffia sponges or modern mesh loofahs, could be quietly damaging the skin.

Skin health experts have warned against excessive sponge use, explaining that repeated scrubbing can weaken the skin’s natural barrier and increase the risk of irritation, dryness, and infections.

A consultant dermatologist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Dr Otrofanowei Erere, explained in an interview with Guardian Life that the risks of sponge use depend on often-overlooked factors such as texture, technique, and pressure.

“Sponging seems simple, but it depends on what type of sponge you use. Is it a bath towel, raffia sponge, or bath gloves?

“The point of sponging is gentle exfoliation, but depending on the texture, daily use can be harmful. Even a soft towel, when used with too much pressure, can become like a scrubbing brush,” she said.

Her warning challenges a long-held belief in many households, where scrubbing hard is seen as proof of freshness.

“Some people think the harsher they scrub, the cleaner they get. That is not true. It is the soap or cleanser that cleans you, not the sponge,” she stressed.

According to her, the real danger lies in what she described as micro-traumas, tiny tears in the skin that cannot be seen with the eyes. These small wounds allow germs and harmful organisms to enter the body more easily.

She also warned that daily sponging strips the skin of natural oils, opens pores unnecessarily, and leads to dryness, itching, and irritation.

Impaired skin barrier

Research has backed these concerns. A study published in the Journal of Tissue Viability in 2024 revealed that the amount of pressure used in bathing has a major effect on skin health.

The researchers observed that “ordinary pressure applied for two consecutive days impaired skin barrier recovery compared with weak pressure.” In other words, scrubbing too hard slows down the skin’s natural ability to repair itself.

On her part, consultant physician, dermatologist and venereologist, Dr Folakemi Cole-Adeife of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the skin does not actually need daily scrubbing to remain clean.

“A lot of people cannot have their baths without sponges, but the truth of the matter is that you actually don’t need to bathe with sponge too frequently or daily,” she said. “Even if you need to exfoliate your skin with a sponge, which is what the mechanical abrasion of the sponge does, you don’t need to do it every day.”

‘Micro tears’

“Using sponge to scrub your skin frequently can strip it of natural oils and create micro-tears or micro-trauma in the skin. It can also introduce bacteria and other micro-organisms into the skin,” Dr Cole-Adeife explained.

She added that frequent sponge use can worsen itchy skin. Her advice: take a break if you are battling irritation. “It is not absolutely necessary to use sponge daily, but if you do not feel clean without it, limit use to once or twice a week, or at most three times,” she said.
Erere also addressed the Nigerian reality of bathing twice daily due to the hot climate.

She noted that not every bath requires a sponge. A full sponge bath in the evening after exposure to sweat, dust, and grime is reasonable, but a simple morning rinse with soap and water is enough.

“If you bathe twice a day, it is better to do a full bath with sponge and soap in the evening after a long day. In the morning, a simple rinse is enough. What matters most is to always moisturise after bathing. That is non-negotiable,” she said.

Both experts stressed the importance of moisturising after every bath. When the skin loses water through constant scrubbing, it becomes dry, itchy, and fragile. A good moisturiser or body oil helps restore balance, keeping the skin barrier strong and healthy.

Interior Minister assures peace in Gbiniyiri, other communities – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has assured residents of Gbiniyiri and surrounding communities in the Savannah Region of the government’s commitment to restoring and maintaining lasting peace.

This assurance came during a high-level visit to the Jakpa Palace in Damongo on Sunday, August 31, where the Minister led a government delegation to engage the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale.

The visit followed violent clashes in Gbiniyiri, a farming community, over a disputed parcel of land. The conflict has led to the displacement of over 18,000 residents, many of whom are now in search of safety and shelter.

Speaking to journalists after the closed-door meeting, Minister Muntaka said the Overlord raised several concerns, all of which have been acknowledged by the government.

He emphasised that the government is determined to work closely with traditional leaders and other stakeholders to ensure peace is restored and sustained.

“We have taken note of all the concerns and we have also assured him that we will do everything humanly possible to ensure that peace will be restored. But we need his cooperation and the cooperation of all others. Surely, what talking can solve, dance cannot solve,” the Minister said.

“Surely, what talking can solve, dance cannot solve, so we are hoping that after all the lengthy discussion, the conclusion that we have come to, we will go and implement our part. We are hopeful that they will also listen to us and also adhere to the whatever agreement that we’ve had.”

He fell ill at his home and was rushed to the Bank hospital in Cantonments, but succumbed to his ailment.

His family confirmed his death in a statement released July 26, which paid tribute to his life and legacy as one of Ghana’s greatest musicians.

“Daddy Lumba was more than a musician; he was a cultural icon whose music touched countless lives. His soulful voice provided the soundtrack to our love stories, and his poignant lyrics captured the poetry of our struggles, dreams, and resilience,” the statement said.

Daddy Lumba’s sister ‘snubs’ Odo Broni

Drama took centre stage during Daddy Lumba’s one-week observance as his younger sister, Faustina Fosu, was accused of snubbing his second wife, Priscilla Ofori-Atta, popularly known as Odo Broni, at the event.

In a viral video, Faustina Fosu was greeting dignitaries and family members at the program, and approached Odo Broni and her mother.

She appeared to snub them both as she passed by without greeting or acknowledging them.

The Ghana Police Service has conducted an assurance parade in Akwatia on Sunday, August 31, 2025, ahead of the by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

The exercise is part of measures by the police to reassure residents, stakeholders, and political parties of their readiness to maintain law and order before, during, and after the polls.

They reiterated their commitment to ensuring a peaceful and credible by-election and urged the public and all political actors to cooperate with security agencies for a smooth electoral process.
