Residents urge completion of Nsuapemso agenda 111 Hospital project

0

Residents of Nsuapemso, Osino, Nsuta, and Bunso in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region have appealed to the government to complete the stalled Agenda 111 hospital at Nsuapemso Junction, emphasizing its importance in emergency healthcare, especially for trauma and accident victims along the Accra-Kumasi Highway.

The project, which began in January 2024 and was assigned to three construction firms, has since stalled, leaving residents frustrated. They remain hopeful that President John Dramani Mahama will prioritize its completion.

“We have to travel long distances to access healthcare. At night, it is even harder to find a vehicle. We plead with the government to bring the contractors back to complete the hospital,” said Lydia Owusuwaa.

Another resident, Agnes Fosua, added, “If this hospital is completed, all neighbouring communities will benefit. We believe President Mahama will ensure its completion.”

Doris Addo, who lost her aunt due to delayed medical care, strongly believes the hospital could have saved her life. “If the hospital had been operational, she might have survived. We pray something is done about it,” she lamented.

Given its location on one of the most accident-prone highways, residents stress that the hospital’s completion is critical for saving lives.

“Accident victims often need urgent care, but they have to be transported far away. Completing this hospital will be a lifesaver,” said Richard Ako Adjei.

The Eastern Regional Hospital, the main referral centre, supports the call, noting that early access to medical care significantly increases survival rates.

“The earlier accident victims receive care, the better their chances of survival. Having hospitals along the highway is crucial,” a medical officer stated.

The hospital’s medical superintendent also urged the government to complete the new regional hospital at Akwadum to ease congestion at the current facility, which operates at 94% capacity daily.

“Because the hospital is almost full every day, If we can complete the new regional hospital it will provide additional beds for the people of Koforidua and the Eastern region in general,” he said.

Vice President calls for an end to violence against women

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, March 10, GNA – Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called for an end to violence against women, including gender-based violence.

The Vice President made the appeal in her keynote address at a National Dialogue to mark this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) in Accra, on the theme “Resetting the Agenda for Women: Accelerating Action on Women’s Rights, Equity, and Empowerment.”

This year’s IWD marks 30 years since the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a commitment to advancing women’s rights globally. Reflecting on Ghana’s progress.

“We must choose to end all forms of violence against women and girls. In whatever form it may take, in whatever rationale we can profess for it, whether human trafficking, domestic violence, accusations of witchcraft and the resulting instant justice, child marriage, female genital mutilation or sexual violence, all of these demand our sustained action.

“Beyond decrying these unhelpful practices, we must interrogate whether there is any reason to justify these, to see them persist like incurable diseases in the space of women in their lives.

“We must try to tackle the problems at their roots, ignoring the needs of girls and women, obstructing their pathways to advancement, killing their dreams and clipping their wings, enforcing women’s acceptance of mediocrity, refusing even to encourage them, glamorizing systems that keep us at the bottom.”

She said all of these also constitute unacceptable forms of violence against women and they require urgent action.

“Today, we stand in solidarity with women and girls. We must live in dignity. We must be intolerant of any form of violence against girls and women, whether in our homes, in our schools, places of work, places of worship, communities and any place in our nation.”

The Vice President said it was time for women, it was time for men too, boys and girls, to choose to end such violations of fundamental human rights.

“Just the right to grow, the right to choose what helps, the right to contribute to your community, the right to contribute to your nation. It should not be seen as an aberration.”

The Vice President restated the need for sustained and inclusive action in the areas of women’s leadership and economic empowerment, girls’ education and reproductive health rights and eliminating gender-based violence in all forms.

She called for a renewed commitment to addressing systemic barriers that hindered women’s advancement, from harmful societal practices to economic and educational inequalities.

Vice President Professor Opoku-Agyemang also highlighted the Government’s immediate action on providing sanitary pads to keep girls in school.

She said the Affirmative Action Act beckoned, and that they must seize that moment to push forward policies that uplift, protect, and empower all Ghanaian women

She said the milestone that Ghanaians want to achieve as a country through an inclusive and sustained method was highlighted by an intersexual, intergenerational women’s dialogue, which aims at resetting the agenda for all of them, uplifting all Ghanaian girls and women, whether they were students, babies, parents, traders, farmers or fisher folk, people in other professions, homemakers or rulers, regardless their backgrounds, and abilities or disabilities, they all matter.

After taking half of my salary every month, my pastor wants sex or I leave his church

0

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’m a 25-year-old woman who was raised in a Christian home.

Over the past years, I’ve been giving half of my salary to my pastor because he told me that by doing so, God would open doors for me.

My salary last year was GH¢1500, so I diligently gave him GH¢ 750 every month. At times, I thought about stopping, but he kept encouraging me, saying it was a test of faith and I shouldn’t give up.

On top of this, he insisted I still pay my tithe, which was 10% of my salary, or GH¢ 150 a month.

This left me with only GH¢ 500 for myself, which was barely enough to survive on. I struggled to feed myself, and I couldn’t even help my family much.

But I trusted that something good was coming, yet nothing changed by the end of the year. I was even a burden on my parents over Christmas because I was broke.

This year, my pastor called me again and asked if my salary had increased. I told him it had, and he suggested I add the extra amount to what I was already giving him, claiming that God was preparing me for something.

But I don’t want to do that anymore. I want to save and take care of myself.

One Saturday morning, after I was done washing, he asked me to come see him. When I arrived, he was alone, with his wife and kids not home. The way he greeted me was strange.

He served me chilled juice and offered me food, but I had already eaten, so I declined. He sat beside me and started talking, but to my shock, he began touching me inappropriately.

I told him to stop, but he insisted that he had always had feelings for me and wanted me to make him happy.

As he tried to kiss me, I pushed him away and stood up, angry and upset. As I was about to leave, he begged me not to tell anyone, then said that since I no longer wanted to give him money or sex, he didn’t see the point in me being in the church.

I told him I didn’t want to continue, and since that conversation in January, he has been making me uncomfortable at church.

He refuses to let me be involved in anything and speaks ill of me to others.

I still love this church. I grew here, and I connect well with everyone. I’ve helped with evangelism and brought many people to Christ. But now, I don’t feel happy there anymore because of how the pastor is treating me.

I just want to serve the Lord, but I don’t want to be taken advantage of in His house.

As a Christian, isn’t my dedication enough? What should I do now? Who would even believe me if I spoke out about this?

Mahama’s sacking of Ghanaians appointed after December 7 gains international attention

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

The decision of the government of Ghana to revoke the appointment of certain individuals has gained international attention.

On February 12, the Chief of Staff, in a letter, directed that all employees who were not yet on the government payroll and were appointed after December 7 should be dismissed from office.

This decision has been criticized by the minority in Parliament and some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, who has announced his intention to sue the government.

Deutsche Welle (DW), an international broadcaster based in Germany, has reported that President John Dramani Mahama, after assuming office, has dismissed several Ghanaians whose appointments took effect after December 7, 2024.

DW TV further reports that among those affected are nurses and teachers.

The international media house states that the opposition has condemned the government’s action and is supporting those who have lost their jobs due to the change in administration.

Their post, shared via social media, reads, “Since President John Mahama took office, there has been a mass revocation of appointments made after the previous government lost power. Among those affected are nurses and teachers. The opposition, in a show of solidarity, has called for their reinstatement, challenging the new administration’s stance that the previous administration recruited them without following due process. Trade unions have warned that the dismissal of key employees could have devastating consequences. #DWAfrica #Ghana”

Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service has announced that teachers whose appointments were terminated will be reintegrated.

Ghana to lose GH¢6.4 billion if government scraps electronic, COVID-19 levies

0

Ghana stands to lose about GH¢6.4 billion in revenue if the government cancels the COVID-19 and the E-Levy taxes in the 2025 budget.

That’s according to a pre-budget survey by auditing and accounting firm, KPMG.

This was stated in its 2025 Pre-Budget Survey submitted to the Ministry of Finance.

“KPMG notes that abolishing the E-Levy and COVID-19 Levy could result in a revenue shortfall of at least GH¢6.4 billion.

“Beyond the revenue measures proposed by respondents, the government should also leverage technology to enhance property rate administration and collection, as well as review taxation within the digital and e-commerce sectors. Additionally, strengthening public financial management systems, closing loopholes in public procurement, and reducing wasteful spending are critical to improving fiscal sustainability,” it said.

The firm also stated that for Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy to succeed, it should focus on industries that naturally thrive with round-the-clock operations, increased consumer demand, and global market competitiveness such as manufacturing, transport and logistics, healthcare, retail and hospitality, and digital services.

Most of the respondents in the survey believed that the new administration policy initiatives that will be in the budget can be the base for recovering the economy.

Dumsor Torments Mahama Govt

0

It appears the attempts by the John Dramani Mahama-led governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to convince Ghanaians that there is no ongoing ‘dumsor,’ is not working as people across the country continue to experience persistent power outages due to fuel supply constraints.

This new approach by government is generating wagging tongues as NDC heavily campaigned against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government in the lead up to the 2024 general election when the previous government faced some challenges of power cuts a few months to the polls.

2025 budget must deliver real benefits to Ghanaians

0

The Member of Parliament for Ofoase/Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has reaffirmed the Minority’s commitment to thoroughly scrutinizing the 2025 budget to ensure it delivers maximum benefits to Ghanaians.

According to him, Parliament’s primary responsibility is to critically assess the government’s commitments, programs, and corresponding budgets to guarantee their effectiveness and sustainability.

His remarks come ahead of the much-anticipated budget presentation by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, scheduled for Tuesday, March 11, 2025.

In a press release, the former Information Minister emphasized that the Minority will hold the government accountable and ensure that promises made to Ghanaians are fulfilled.

“Our job as Parliament is to examine the commitments/programs and to examine the budgets for each of them. Our job is to assess, make recommendations, and, in the end, approve the policy and the budget,” he stated.

“We will bring to bear the knowledge we’ve acquired in government, the lessons from what went right and wrong in our era, and the feedback from our constituents in our assessment and approvals.”

Oppong Nkrumah further stressed that the transition from political rhetoric to practical governance was crucial for addressing national challenges.

“It’s good that finally the propaganda is going to give way to governance programs that can respond to the outstanding challenges our people face. We in the minority will do our part to help these programs succeed for the people of Ghana,” he added.

As the nation awaits the 2025 budget, the Minority’s pledge to conduct a thorough review sets the stage for intense parliamentary debate and accountability.

Hoteliers push for tax consolidation, lower utility tariffs in 2025 Budget

0

The Ghana Hoteliers Association is advocating for the consolidation of multiple taxes, including the National Health Insurance Levy, VAT, and the GETFund levy, into a single tax for the hospitality industry.

According to the Association, the current tax structure, combined with rising inflation, foreign exchange volatility, and high utility tariffs, is placing immense pressure on hotel businesses.

With the government set to present the 2025 budget, industry players are urging policymakers to address these economic challenges to ensure the sector’s sustainability and growth.

Speaking to Citi Business News, the President of the Ghana Hoteliers Association, Dr. Edward Ackah-Nyamike, called on the government to take their concerns into account in the 2025 budget.

“We have made our points very clear over the years so we want to see something on taxes and levies hopefully reduced and some taking out as promised by the government. We also want to see measures in place to deal with the economic environment that affects our business like inflation, foreign exchange and utility tariffs as well.

“If any of these things are dealt with in a manner that will show some positive signs that will allow our business flourish, why not…we will be very happy. We have been pushing for a consolidation of the taxes that for the hotel industry, we will have one tax that consolidate VAT, GETFund, NHIL and all that,” he said.

African Political Parties Initiative to foster inter-party interaction in Africa – South Africa’s Jeff Radebe

0

The chairman of the advisory board of the Africa Governance Centre Mr Jeff Radebe has tipped the African Political Parties Initiative as having the potential to  boost capacity building and promote meaningful interactions among political parties on the African Continent.

Addressing the launch of the African Political Parties Initiative which was held in Accra on Friday March 7, 2025, Mr Radebe noted that the Initiative was  geared towards breaking up the ideological silos, deep mistrust, and knowledge gaps that have kept African political parties apart and undermined cross-party consensus for the betterment of our citizenry.

Mr Radebe intimated that amidst the multiple onslaughts of the current geopolitical turmoil, increasing economic marginalization of youth and women, and the failure of governments to grapple with the full consequences of the planetary crisis induced by climate change, Africa stands on the precipice and can provide the world a refreshing lens to escape from this deep impasse and find imaginative ways of securing meaningful inclusive growth through broader coalition beyond what a single political party has to offer.

He cited the example of South Africa, where political parties that have historically and ideologically opposed each other, were brought together I its last elections to form a government of national unity.

He described Africa’s problems as  national, regional, and continental imperatives that demand collective solutions, hence the need for inter-party cooperation. Mr Radebe admonished that cooperation must beyond rhetoric, translate into institutional frameworks that enable political actors to work together on matters of national interest.

Also participating in the event, was the International Conference of African Political Parties (ICAAP) headquartered in the Republic of Korea, led by Secretary- General Kwon Hee-Sog.

Mr Hee-Sog addressing the esteemed gathering throug an official communication, congratulated the Africa Governance Centre for birthing the vision to launch the African Political Parties Summit, stressing that the objectives and principles of the International Conference of African Political Parties did closely align with those of the Africa Governance Centre.

He noted that the ICAAP has over the last few years, advanced their work beyond Asia, and stretching into other continents like Africa, Europe and Latin America.

He noted, I believe that this initiative will undoubtedly lead to vibrant and democratic political activism, contributing to the promotion of democracy and good governance, sustained peace and shared prosperity across the continent.

Other dignitaries present at the event included The President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E John Dramani Mahama, the Vice President, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, The Prime Minister of Sao Tome and Principe, H.E Americo Ramos, the National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and members of the Diplomatic Corps.

The African Political Parties Summit is set to be held in July this year and is tipped to be the largest convocation of political parties on the continent of Africa.

The Africa Governance Centre is a policy, advocacy, and research think tank dedicated to strengthening governance systems across Africa and are the conveners of the Initiative.

The African Political Parties Initiative is a flagship program of the Africa Governance Centre (AGC) aimed at strengthening democratic governance, political leadership, and party systems across the African  continent.

Although the paramount event of the Initiative is the annual Africa Political Parties Summit which is slated for July this year, it also boasts of other governance-focused activities and events such as the Youth in Politics Forum, Women Political Leadership Summit, Political Leadership Academy, Political Parties Governance Index, and the Diaspora Political Parties Exchange.

Efforts to revitalize Ghana sports gain momentum as SWAG calls on GAB boss

Leadership of SWAG with GBA President Kwamina Asomaning, others during the visit Leadership of SWAG with GBA President Kwamina Asomaning, others during the visit

The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) is deepening collaborations with key stakeholders to address the challenges facing sports development in the country.

In a recent engagement, the leadership of SWAG, led by President Kwabena Yeboah, met with Kwamina Asomaning, President of the Ghana Association of Bankers (GAB) who doubles as Managing Director of Stanbic Bank Ghana, to discuss potential partnerships aimed at boosting sports in Ghana.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for SWAG to acknowledge the contributions of various institutions toward the growth of sports and to seek further commitments to talent development and grassroots initiatives.

Kwamina Asomaning emphasized the vital role of sports in national unity and economic development, stating that collective efforts are needed to harness the full potential of Ghanaian athletes.

He highlighted plans to expand support beyond professional sports by investing in school-level competitions, recognizing the significance of early talent identification and development.

The SWAG delegation, which included key executives such as Secretary General Charles Osei Asibey, Deputy Secretary General Kenneth Odeng Adade, Women’s Commissioner Mavis Amanor, and Executive Committee member Ohene Bampoe Brenya, commended ongoing efforts to promote local sporting disciplines.

They stressed the importance of sustained investment in various sports, including table tennis, swimming, and cycling, to enable Ghanaian athletes to compete at both national and international levels.

Discussions also touched on past strategic investments in Ghanaian sports, such as support for major events like the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations and the recently concluded African Games. Stakeholders expressed optimism that strengthened partnerships will lead to long-term growth and a more vibrant sporting industry in the country.

The engagement underscores a renewed commitment to sports development, with institutions and stakeholders pledging to work together to restore Ghana’s prominence on the global sporting stage.

2 times Ghanaians have raised security concerns over President Mahama’s actions

0

President John Dramani Mahama has come under scrutiny on separate occasions President John Dramani Mahama has come under scrutiny on separate occasions

Since assuming office, President John Dramani Mahama has faced intense public scrutiny on two notable occasions.

Without a doubt, the president has received generous offerings from his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, on separate occasions, which have drawn significant criticisms.

Public and critical concerns have primarily focused on the security implications of such actions, given his position as the head of state.

While some may view these instances as harmless, others argue that they raise serious questions about established protocols and potential risks to the country.

Some notable persons who have spoken against these acts include Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, the Member of Parliament for Techiman South.

He has petitioned Parliament, raising concerns over actions that he believes could compromise the security and safety of President John Dramani Mahama.

He made the petition on two key events.

Here are the two occasions that have warranted scrutiny of the president:

Presidential travels with Dzata private jet

During his official trip to The Gambia and Senegal, President Mahama traveled aboard the Dzata private jet, owned by his brother, Ibrahim Mahama.

Critics questioned this decision, arguing that the country’s official jet, The Falcon, was in pristine condition, thereby raising concerns about the rationale behind the choice.

Although the Minister of State In-Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, assured the public that the use of the Dzata private jet incurred no cost to taxpayers, critics remained firm in their concerns.

Mahama chauffeured by his brother

President Mahama once again came under backlash when videos of his brother driving him around during an official visit to flood-stricken areas in Ketu South in the Volta Region emerged online.

Some towns in the region have been submerged by the sea in a tidal wave damage.

President Mahama, among other government officials, plus his brother, on March 7, 2025, visited some of those areas to assess the extent of the damage.

A video seemingly showing Ibrahim driving the presidential vehicle sparked varied reactions.

While it is unclear which car in the convoy carried the president, the leading vehicle, displaying the State Emblem instead of a number plate, was clearly driven by Ibrahim Mahama.

Critics contended that the president’s frequent acceptance of generous offerings from his brother could be perceived as an attempt to secure future government favors, particularly in the awarding of contracts.

Others, however, have praised the gesture, describing it as a demonstration of the strong bond of brotherhood between the two.

They also highlighted Ibrahim Mahama’s humility, emphasising that his social standing does not hinder his willingness to support his brother.

Government must restore bank licenses if closures were reckless – Dr Yamson

0

Dr Ishmael Yamson is Chairman of the National Economic Dialogue Dr Ishmael Yamson is Chairman of the National Economic Dialogue

The Chairman of the National Economic Dialogue, Dr. Ishmael Yamson, has called for the restoration of licenses to banks affected by the banking sector clean-up exercise if investigations reveal that the revocations were unwarranted.

Speaking in an interview on Hot Issues on Sunday, March 8, 2025, Dr. Yamson urged the government to establish an independent body to review the Bank of Ghana’s justification for closing the banks.

He noted that if the investigations conclude that the clean-up was “callous and reckless,” the affected banks should have their licenses reinstated to resume operations.

Reflecting on the financial sector clean-up, Dr. Yamson argued that instead of shutting down the banks, the government could have taken alternative measures, such as replacing management with competent leaders and punishing those found guilty of financial mismanagement.

He suggested that at the time, the government had various options, including requiring bank leaders responsible for liquidity challenges to relinquish their shares, rather than opting for closure.

Calling for an independent review of the decisions that led to the closures, he emphasised the need for a more careful approach to addressing the issue.

President John Mahama has also criticised the former leadership of the Bank of Ghana for the manner in which the banking sector clean-up was conducted.

The exercise led to the closure of several financial institutions.

During the swearing-in ceremony of the new Governor and Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 President Mahama expressed concern that the decisions made under the banking sector reforms had severe consequences for individuals and families.

The president has pledged to restore the licenses of banks that he believes were unjustly revoked.
