NPP Chairman’s family sends strong message over his health

0

The family of the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Stephen Ayesu Ntim,, has alleged attempts by some elements within the party to politicise his health, cautioning them to desist.

In a statement signed by the family head, the family expressed concern over a planned National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which Mr. Ntim is scheduled to chair, despite the leadership being aware of his recent health condition.

“The strength and wellness of every man rest in the hands of the Almighty. We urge individuals and groups within the party he leads and beyond to desist from politicising the health status of Mr. Ntim,” the family stated.

The statement warned that the family would resist any attempt to force Mr. Ntim to attend the said meeting.

This message marks the latest development regarding Mr. Ntim, who took a break from the NPP’s “Thank You” tour on May 1, 2025.

A statement at the time, signed by the party’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, explained that Mr. Ntim was stepping aside temporarily to attend to “some pressing matters.”

He was expected to rejoin the team later, but this did not happen before the tour concluded on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Reports Major Outage as Users See Error Messages

0

OpenAI’s ubiquitous artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, alongside its related services including Sora and various APIs, experienced a significant and widespread global outage today. The disruption left millions of users, from tech professionals to students across continents, including Africa, unable to access the highly popular platform, underscoring the world’s burgeoning dependence on AI.

Reports of the service interruption began surging on outage tracking websites like DownDetector early on Tuesday, June 10. By 6:44 a.m. GMT, 705 complaints had already been registered, a number that rapidly escalated throughout the morning as users worldwide attempted to access the AI assistant. Users encountered a range of issues, from complete unresponsiveness and persistent “Hmm…something seems to have gone wrong” error messages to frustrating login loops and blank chat interfaces. Both free-tier users and subscribers to the premium ChatGPT Plus service were equally affected, confirming the profound nature of the technical fault.

OpenAI swiftly acknowledged the unfolding crisis on its official status page. Initially, the company stated, “Some users are experiencing elevated error rates and latency across the listed services. We are continuing to investigate this issue.” Later updates from OpenAI indicated that the root cause of the elevated errors and latency across its services had been identified, and mitigation efforts were actively underway. However, no concrete timeline for a full resolution and restoration of normal service was provided, leaving users in limbo.

The outage brought into sharp focus the deep integration of AI tools into daily academic, professional, and personal lives. Social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), became a hub for frustrated users sharing screenshots of error messages and lamenting lost work. The incident prompted a wave of humorous, albeit poignant, memes depicting the sudden paralysis many felt without their AI companion.

As ChatGPT remained largely inaccessible, rival AI chatbots stepped into the void. Platforms like Google’s Gemini, Elon Musk’s Grok, and Perplexity AI reportedly continued to function without interruption, offering users much-needed alternatives for tasks ranging from drafting emails and generating code to conducting research. This unexpected market test highlighted the growing competitive landscape in the AI sector and the readiness of alternative solutions for users in need.

With its rapid growth since its launch in November 2022, accumulating an estimated 500 million users globally, ChatGPT has become a cornerstone of digital interaction. This latest outage, following similar disruptions in December, January, and March, serves as a potent reminder of the inherent vulnerabilities within advanced AI infrastructure and the critical importance of developing resilient and robust systems to support the world’s increasing reliance on artificial intelligence.

Suspected shooter reported to have died by suicide as country mourns after one of its worst mass shootings.

A gunman has killed nine people and injured at least another 10 in a shooting at a school in the Austrian city of Graz.

Police were deployed to the BORG Dreierschutzengasse school in Austria’s second largest city on Tuesday morning after shots were heard.

The suspected attacker is also dead, according to the Austrian Press Agency, bringing the total death toll to 10.

Police said they arrived at the school shortly after the shots were reported and secured the premises.

“No further danger is expected,” the police said, adding that students had been evacuated and were receiving support from a crisis intervention team along with their parents.

Among those killed were at least seven students, Graz Mayor Elke Kahr said, describing the attack as a “terrible tragedy”. At least one adult was also killed.

Local media reports identified the suspect as a 22-year-old former student who had been a victim of bullying.

He reportedly carried a pistol and a shotgun and opened fire on pupils in two classrooms, one of which had once been his classroom. Media reports said he died by suicide and his body was found in a bathroom.

The Kronen Zeitung newspaper reported shots were first heard about 10am (08:00 GMT) and the attack was carried out across two classrooms at the upper secondary school, which is attended by pupils 14 years and older.
Police said they are working on the assumption that there was a sole suspect.

The attack is reported to be one of the country’s worst mass shootings.

Chancellor Christian Stocker planned to travel to the school, a spokeswoman said. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner was also expected at the scene.

Mario Kunasek, governor of the southeastern Austrian state of Styria, of which Graz – which has a population of about 300,000 people – is the capital, expressed condolences to families of the victims.

“As a father, I am deeply saddened by this insane act, which has caused so much harm and incredible suffering,” he said. “My thoughts are with the innocent victims, families and teachers.”

A spokeswoman for European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the killings “absolutely horrible and tragic”.

“We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and the entire city of Graz. We stand together in mourning while we seek clarity in the wake of this horrible event,” she said.

Former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta has been added to the INTERPOL Red Notice database Former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta has been added to the INTERPOL Red Notice database

Former Minister of Finance, Kenneth Ofori-Atta, has reacted to the accusation made against him by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

According to a report by ft.com, published on June 9, 2025, the former finance minister, in an interview with the Financial Times before an INTERPOL Red Notice was issued for him, said he was “puzzled and dismayed” over the turn of events.

The report indicated that Ofori-Atta had told the OSP to deal with his lawyers because he would “be out of the country for the next few months.”

The former finance minister also denied all the allegations levelled against him by the OSP, saying that he was not the “originating nor implementing minister” in four of the five cases the OSP has accused him of.

Specifically, the report indicated that Ofori-Atta said that he had nothing to do with the allegation pertaining to contracts signed in the power, petroleum and health sectors.

Meanwhile, the OSP has stated that the former finance minister is a suspect in five cases it is investigating:

1. Revenue Assurance Contracts: Examining agreements between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) concerning petroleum and mineral revenue oversight.

2. National Cathedral Project: Scrutinising procurement processes and financial transactions linked to the construction of the National Cathedral.

No excuse, use mid-year Budget review to resolve GRNMA strike

0

Ranking Member on Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, has urged government to use the upcoming mid-year budget review to accommodate the demands of striking nurses and midwives, insisting that the law provides a clear pathway for such fiscal adjustments within the year.

Addressing a minority press conference in Accra on Tuesday, Dr. Afriyie said government cannot hide behind budgetary constraints to delay action on the grievances of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), who have declared an indefinite nationwide strike.

“The mid-year budget review allows it. The law of this country has no gaps,” he stated. “It takes things like this—that towards the course of the year, when there are developments—you come back to Parliament for another approval. That is why you have the mid-year budget review,” Ayew Afriyie said.

This comes as the nationwide strike intensifies without resolution as GRNMA has flatly rejected government’s proposal to defer implementation of the new conditions of service to 2026.

Early on, the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh warned that fully implementing the demands currently outlined in the conditions of service for nurses and midwives could significantly destabilise Ghana’s economy.

“We wish to draw attention to the fact that the conditions under reference are not captured in the 2025 budget and will completely throw the economy off gear if implemented immediately in the manner it currently exists.”

However, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie has criticised what he described as government’s rigid posture and urged a change in approach to resolve the crisis.

“The posturing of government must change,” he stressed.

Dambai Polyclinic Brought to Standstill by Nurses’ Strike

By Daniel Agbesi Latsu/Kingsley Mamore

Dambai (O/R), June 10, GNA- The Nurses and Midwives strike is taking a heavy toll on healthcare delivery in the Oti region, with the Dambai Polyclinic in the Krachi East Municipality being brought to no activity and severely disrupting services.

The strike has left patients struggling to access medical care, with many expressing frustration and concern.

A visit to the facility by the Ghana News Agency (GNA), revealed a stark contrast to its usual bustling atmosphere, with only a handful of staff, including dispensary workers and records keepers, present.

The absence of nurses has created a significant vacuum in healthcare delivery in the area and the government must intervene immediately.

Most residents, who were engaged by GNA, are urging authorities to find an urgent solution to the crisis, highlighting the need for uninterrupted healthcare services.

The outcome of ongoing negotiations between the nurses’ union and authorities remains uncertain, leaving patients in limbo.

The strike has raised concerns about the impact on patients’ health, particularly those with critical medical conditions. A swift resolution is eagerly awaited to restore normalcy to the facility.

Meanwhile, at the Kadjebi Health Centre, a visit by the Ghana News Agency, at about 1000 hours on Tuesday, June 10, revealed a sorrowful situation of no activity with the GRNMA members were virtually absent, except for those belonging to the Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UPNMG).

GNA’s attempt to speak with Mr. Joseph Yekple, the Kadjebi District Chairman of GRNMA, failed as he refused to pick up the calls after the reporter introduced himself.

However, a former Kadjebi District Executive member of GRNMA, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that they are demanding rural incentives for nurses and midwives serving in deprived and remote areas.

She indicated that they are also asking for free healthcare for all nurses and the payment of a 13-month allowance for all nurses.

Additionally, she mentioned that they are calling for a fuel allowance for senior nurses, asserting that their demands are legitimate and that the government should heed them.

Ms. Rashida Mahama, a pregnant woman, who was met by GNA at the maternity block, added her voice to the appeal for the government to listen to the striking nurses and midwives so they can return to work.

She said patients are feeling the brunt of the industrial action the most and the dutybearers.

Foreign Affairs Minister rolls out reforms to address “poor” services at Ghana Missions abroad

People Of Darker Complexion Should Not Be Discriminated Against- Dr Hilda Boye Serves Notice

0

Dr. Hilda Mantebea Boye, who is the President of the Paediatric Society of Ghana, has spoken out about an important issue. She believes that people with darker skin tones should not be treated unfairly or discriminated against. Dr. Boye made these statements in relation to the issue of bleached babies, a term used to describe babies or children who may be subjected to skin bleaching, a harmful practice where people lighten their skin using chemicals or creams.

Skin bleaching is common in some parts of the world, where people try to lighten their skin because they believe lighter skin is more beautiful or desirable. However, Dr. Boye is concerned that this practice can be dangerous, especially for children, and it can affect their health in the long term. Bleaching products can contain harmful chemicals that can cause skin problems, allergies, and other health issues.

Dr. Boye’s message goes beyond the dangers of skin bleaching. She is also showing an important social issue discrimination based on skin color. She stated that people with darker complexions should not be treated differently or less favorably because of their skin color. Unfortunately, in some societies, there is a bias towards lighter skin, and people with darker skin are sometimes seen as less attractive or less worthy. Dr. Boye wants to change this mindset and promote equality for everyone, regardless of their skin color.

Her statement is a call to end colorism, which is prejudice or discrimination based on the shade of someone’s skin. Dr. Boye encourages society to embrace all skin tones and appreciate beauty in all its forms. She also urges parents, especially mothers, to avoid using harmful bleaching products on their children and to encourage them to love and appreciate their natural skin color.

In the end, Dr. Boye’s message is clear people, no matter their skin color, should be treated with respect, and children should be protected from harmful practices like skin bleaching.

Man Killed While Escaping Accident

The late Isaac Bonaray

A newly married man believed to be in his early 40s who tried to jump through the window of a vehicle in which he was sitting to escape death, was run over by a timber truck.

The horrific accident occurred at Tanokrom Pipe Ano, near Takoradi, on Friday, June 6, 2025.

The deceased, identified as Isaac Bonaray, was a businessman, radio presenter and the Chairman of the Aowin Municipal Football Association in the Western North Region.

It was gathered that the deceased, who lived at Enchi most of the time, had completed his house at Apowa, near Takoradi and moved in with his wife and their two-month old baby a day before the incident.

The fatal accident occurred when the truck loaded with timber was moving from the Takoradi direction towards Bankyease, while a mini bus also called ‘trotro’ on which the deceased was onboard, was also heading towards Kojokrom, all in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.

According to eyewitnesses, upon reaching Tanokrom Pipe Ano, the timber truck tried to branch towards the Bankyease direction.

“But as it was curving, the engine of the long truck went off and the driver lost control, so the truck started reversing towards the mini bus or trotro which was behind the truck.

“The trotro mate quickly opened the vehicle’s door for the passengers to get down.

“The deceased, who was sitting on the front seat, could not open his door and attempted to jump through the window, but fell down in the process, and the timber truck ran over him,” the eyewitnesses indicated.

Speaking to journalists, the trotro driver, Nkansah Kyerematen, said when he was few meters away from Tanokrom Pipe Ano traffic light, he realised that the timber truck was reversing towards his direction.

He indicated that in an attempt to swerve the truck, he hit another vehicle which was behind him, and suddenly the timber truck also hit his vehicle.

“All the passengers in my car started running away after the door was forcefully removed by my mate.

“It was later that eyewitnesses prompted me that, one of the passengers in my vehicle, in an attempt to escape through the front window, was ran over by the truck and died on the spot,” he added.

Personnel of the Fire Service were later called to help tow the haulage truck, and the deceased was retrieved.

According to the relatives of the deceased, Bonaray was going to Kojokrom to purchase tiles to furnish his new residence when the accident happened.

The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Effia Nkwanta Hospital morgue by personnel from the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate of the Ghana Police Service.

‘The government is acting in bad faith’

0

Dr Nana Ayew Afriye is Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament Dr Nana Ayew Afriye is Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament

The Minority in Parliament has accused the government of acting in bad faith regarding the conditions of service of nurses and midwives in the public sector.

At a press conference held by Minority Members on the Health Committee of Parliament, the Ranking Member, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, stated that the government’s failure to implement the agreed-upon conditions of service, despite being in office for six months, and its approach following the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) strike declaration, reflect dishonesty.

“It is the belief of the Minority in this House that the government has acted and continues to act in bad faith regarding this standoff,” the Ranking Member said.

According to the Minority, while the conditions of service were approved for implementation under the previous government, the process stalled due to legal action, which was only resolved after that administration had left office.

The Minority emphasised that governance is a continuous process, while questioning the current government’s failure to implement the agreement.

“Again, it is our belief that governance is a continuous process. Regardless of which party is in government, public servants are paid, and they remain public servants with collective bargaining rights. These rights, once agreed upon, remain theirs, regardless of which government takes over after elections.

“In May 2024, the Registered Nurses and Midwives Association of Ghana reached an agreement with the government on their rights,” Dr Ayew said.

The Minority further condemned the government’s posturing and urged it to engage with the striking health workers to bring an immediate end to the strike to prevent the risk of losing lives.

The Caucus also called on the GRNMA to be “reasonable” and “merciful” in pursuing their interests and those of patients.

“Fortunately, we will soon hear from the Minister of Finance regarding the Mid-Year Budget Review. This is the time to address their concerns. As the Mid-Year Budget Review is approaching, it’s not as if we are in August, where you might tell them to wait for the next budget cycle. Now is the right time to include their concerns and listen to them.

“My understanding is that since January, they were told that the Ministry of Finance would meet with them in June, with a specific date of June 18. How would you feel if you were repeatedly told to wait for six months? We are not here to justify their strike. We are here to plead with the nurses to understand that even if the government sees the need to engage them, they should approach negotiations in good faith, with Ghanaians’ interests at heart.

“Gaining all the financial benefits while lives are lost brings no joy to anyone. As the Minority, we are mindful not to escalate the situation or encourage prolonging the strike. We are only asking them to be merciful at the negotiating table and to act reasonably,” the Minority said.

The Public Relations Officer of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Mustapha Salifu The Public Relations Officer of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Mustapha Salifu

The Head, Public Relations Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Mustapha Salifu, has responded to a claim by a woman in a viral video on social media, alleging that a man who was suffering from an asthma attack, died at the facility due to neglect by nurses over the ongoing strike.

The video, reportedly recorded by the woman who claims to be his relative, alleged that nurses refused to attend to the patient, who was in critical condition, citing the industrial action currently being undertaken by healthcare workers.

In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb on June 10, 2025, Salifu said the hospital’s management is aware of the video and has initiated an investigation into the incident.

“We have seen the video and are doing our best to reach out to the lady who shared it. It is important that we speak with her to understand exactly what happened including which department of the hospital the incident took place in, and which staff were involved,” he said.

He emphasised that the hospital takes such allegations seriously and will ensure that the facts are established and appropriate action taken.

“She will be the best person to provide firsthand information. Once we identify those involved, the necessary disciplinary measures will be taken,” Salifu assured.

Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital is the nation’s largest tertiary healthcare facility and serves thousands of patients weekly.

The ongoing strike, initiated by some categories of healthcare professionals over conditions of service, has already disrupted several clinical operations across the country.

Change your posture toward striking nurses and midwives – Minority to govt

0

The Minority in Parliament has urged the government to reconsider its approach to the ongoing nurses and midwives strike, emphasising the need for constructive engagement rather than legal action.

Speaking on the issue at a presser in Accra on Tuesday June 10, Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament, Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie, stressed that the demands outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) are reasonable and justified.

However, he criticised the government’s failure to engage the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) since January, leading to escalating protests.

Dr. Afriyie outlined the nurses’ gradual steps in their industrial action, which began with red bands, followed by disruptions to outpatient (OPD) and inpatient (IPD) services, culminating in a total strike.

“All the expectations in the CBA called for in appendix B is justified and not far fetched but government has not seen the need to have engaged them since January. They (GRNMA) feel undermined as far as their rights are concerned and that is why they advised government that we are going to wear red bands for the first stage, the next stage we are going to do OPD, and the next stage IPD and now total strike,” he said.

Instead of addressing their concerns through dialogue, the National Labour Commission (NLC) resorted to taking the association to court—a move the Minority sees as an “extreme act of bad faith.”

“They have their rights within the law. You cannot use the law to checkmate them. That is not right,” Dr. Afriyie asserted, adding that the government’s posture must shift toward respect and meaningful negotiations.

He urged authorities to meet with the GRNMA, clearly communicate what is feasible, and commit to resolving the crisis in a manner that respects the rights of healthcare professionals while safeguarding public health.

“So we are here to state clearly that the posturing of government must change, respect them, sit with them. Let them know what you can do and cannot do.”

Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has warned that implementing the demands currently outlined in the conditions of service for nurses and midwives could significantly destabilise Ghana’s economy.

Speaking at a presser, he reiterated the government’s openness to dialogue but stressed the economic challenges tied to the current proposals.

“The government will again stress its readiness to further engage with the view of implementing the conditions of service in a manner that does not dislocate the national budget,” he stated.

He further explained that the proposed benefits were not factored into the national financial plan.

“We wish to draw attention to the fact that the conditions under reference are not captured in the 2025 budget and will completely throw the economy off gear if implemented immediately in the manner it currently exists.”

Akandoh emphasised the government’s awareness of the risks associated with unplanned spending.

“We are mindful of the serious economic consequences of unbudgeted expenditure, and we want to avoid the economic factors that led to the crisis in the first place,” he added.

Andy Opoku (L) exchanging pleasantries with Yaw Akuoku

A member of the security detail of the presidential candidate of the New Force, Andy Opoku also known as ‘Seven’, has publicly apologised to Mr. Yaw Akuoku for physically assaulting him during the funeral of the late Paramount Chief of Mampong on Saturday.

Narrating the incident at a press conference last Sunday in Accra, Mr. Opoku attributed the action he took against the victim to his inability to manage his anger at the time, and apologised to the victim, all Ghanaians and the leadership of the movement for his actions.

He said, “I sincerely apologise to the victim, to my boss and the leadership of the movement and every one. I am undergoing an anger management course now and hope to come out and put up an excellent behaviour in dealing with people.”

The victim, Mr. Yaw Akuoku, disclosed that he wanted to gain access to the late Mamponghene’s palace together with some other people present during the funeral, and was hit by one of the security detail of Nana Kwame Bediako without any provocation.

Mr. Akuoku thanked the leadership of New Force, particularly Nana Kwame Bediako, for his quick intervention in providing him medical treatment.

He said he has sincerely forgiven the security officer, and stated that the presidential candidate of the New Force Movement has also apologised to him, and provided medical treatment in Accra.

But Lead Economist for the New Force Movement, Hubert Baidoo, for his part, said though they have issued a public apology on the issue, his outfit has already launched investigations in to the matter to ensure it does not recur in future.

“We deeply regret the incident and cannot be overlooked though we are conducting investigations to take actions on that. We have asked him to enroll in anger management course, and it is not something we take lightly at all. We are very sorry,” he added.

Background

A viral video on Saturday showed one of the security detail of the leader of the New Force Movement, Nana Kwame Bediako, physically assaulting a gentleman who attempted to have access to him.

The security officer, in a video which has since gone viral and received widespread condemnation from sections of the public, was seen kicking the victim twice in the chest.

Ealier statements signed by General Secretary Charles Yomekpe, described the act as “deeply saddening and disturbing,” indicating that the victim who was assaulted posed no threat and deserves dignity and respect.

Switzerland launches ‘Ghana Cooperation Programme’ worth $77 million

SECO launches Ghana Cooperation Programme for 2025 - 2028 SECO launches Ghana Cooperation Programme for 2025 – 2028

Switzerland, through its State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), has launched a $77 million grant (the equivalent of 65 million Swiss Francs) for its Ghana Cooperation Programme for 2025-2028.

The programme aimed to support the country in seizing opportunities and addressing economic challenges and environmental concerns.

It was under the theme, “Creating a More Resilient and Forward-Looking Ghanaian Economy.”

The Swiss Ambassador to Ghana, Simone Giger, said the theme reflects Ghana’s state in the past few years that have seen the most difficult times in the country’s history.

She said Ghana has shown a true sense of resilience as it has started recovering from these challenges.

Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of the Ghana Cooperation Programme 2025-2028 on June 5, 2025, she said, “So, today, we launched this new cooperation program for the next four years, and it’s under the topic of creating a more resilient and forward-looking Ghanaian economy.

“And why resilient, why forward-looking? So, resilience really means the ability to withstand shocks, the ability to weather storms. The past few years have shown that this is very important for Ghana.”

The Swiss Ambassador added that the partnership is to help the Ghanaian economy stand against global shocks.

“Ghana’s economy needs certain buffers that when there’s an external shock that hits the economy, it can actually stand strong. And then we also said we want to invest in a forward-looking economy that’s more like for future generations. You need to invest now and plan ahead so that the generations to come can also profit and benefit from a clean, healthy and prosperous Ghana,” she added.

The launch of the programme saw stakeholders from different sectors, like the government, high-level representatives, the private sector, civil society, academia, and development partners.

The ambassador also added that “funding for me is not the most important element of it, but we are speaking now about 65 million Swiss francs. That’s roughly, according to today’s exchange rate, about 77 million US dollars, and this is all in grants, so it doesn’t have to be paid back.

“So, it’s quite substantial, but I think what’s important is that in today’s world and these times, when a lot of other countries are cutting back on their development cooperation, we were actually able to maintain the envelope that we are providing to Ghana. Now, when it comes to my vision, four years is not a very long time, but I still want to dream a bit,” she noted.

Bridging the Digital Divide: Why Ghana is the Perfect Stage for a Conference on Digital Inclusion and Women’s Empowerment

0

Accra, June 10, GNA-The countdown begins to the “Access to Agency: Empowering Women Through Digital Inclusion” international conference that promises to reshape how we think about digital inclusion
and women’s empowerment in low-and-middle income countries.

On July 2nd and 3rd, 2025, Accra, Ghana will host the Access to Agency: Empowering
Women Through Digital Inclusion conference, jointly convened by the BRAC Institute of
Governance and Development (BIGD) and Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA).

BIGD’s deep expertise in digital connectivity pathways—demonstrated by the WEE-DiFine and WEE-Connect Initiatives —combines with IPA’s global and local research network and evidence-based
approach to create a powerful convergence of expertise, innovation, and urgent necessity to
address a pressing development challenge – digital inclusion and women’s empowerment.

As one of Africa’s most digitally progressive countries, Ghana has made significant strides in
mobile connectivity and digital financial services. However, the gender gap in digital access
remains pronounced, mirroring patterns across SSA.

Ghana’s Trade, Agri-business and Industry Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare recently met senior US officials in Washington, DC, to address critical trade policy issues.
They discussed the AGOA, Ghana’s local content policy, US import regulations, outstanding debts to US firms and the revival of the TIFA pact.
She is scheduled to meet USTR officials in the next few weeks to continue consultations.

The minister stressed the importance of AGOA—set to expire in September 2025—in attracting US investment, particularly, in Ghana’s growing garment and textile industry. Enacted in 2000, AGOA offers duty-free access to over 1,800 products from eligible sub-Saharan African countries.

The high-level meeting followed protectionist measures announced under the United States’ revived ‘America First’ trade policy.

Both sides agreed on the need for constructive engagement to balance Ghana’s development goals with the expectations of foreign investors, and highlighted the importance of regulatory clarity and compliance with safety and environmental standards, a domestic news agency reported.

The minister is scheduled to meet officials of the office of the US trade representative in the next few weeks to continue consultations.

Financial Times features embattled Ken Ofori-Atta

0

The Financial Times is the latest acclaimed international media outlet to report on the ordeal of the former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, who has been declared a wanted fugitive and added to the INTERPOL Red Notice database.

In an article titled “From finance minister to fugitive: the targets of Ghana’s anti-corruption drive”, which was published on June 9, 2025, the Financial Times gave details of allegations against Ofori-Atta.

It also featured the former minister’s response to the allegations against him and a commentary on the brouhaha by policy analyst Bright Simons.

Read the full article below:

Ken Ofori-Atta has worn many hats in his long career as an investment banker, entrepreneur, and, until last year, Ghana’s Davos-pleasing finance minister. Now he has a new one: a wanted man on Interpol’s red list.

Ofori-Atta, 65, who has been seeking medical treatment in the US, is wanted to answer charges of “using public office for profit” during his 2017-2024 tenure as finance minister, the longest in Ghana’s history. He denies all charges. The Interpol red notice is the latest salvo in a legal drama between Ofori-Atta and the Office of Ghana’s Special Prosecutor (OSP), which declared him a “fugitive” in February as part of a sprawling anti-corruption drive launched by President John Mahama, who took office in January.

Ofori-Atta told the Financial Times before the Interpol red notice was issued that he was “puzzled and dismayed” by the turn of events. He had initially asked the prosecutor to speak to his lawyers given that he would “be out of the country for the next few months”.

Ofori-Atta said he was not the “originating nor implementing minister” in four of the five cases brought up by the prosecutor, relating to government contracts in power, petroleum and health.

The former finance minister is also wanted in relation to an estimated $58mn of public funds spent on Accra’s ill-fated National Cathedral project, which was abandoned two years ago. A devout Christian who once led a prayer session for the success of a eurobond offering. Ofori-Atta personally backed the project.

The National Democratic Congress won December’s presidential election promising to stamp out corruption that had allegedly taken hold during the previous administration of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), of which Ofori-Atta was a leading light.

The NPP government, headed by Nana Akufo-Addo, Ofori-Atta’s cousin, had come to power promising a squeaky-clean technocratic administration, but it was forced to default on the country’s debt in December 2022 and seek a $3bn IMF bailout. As finance minister, Ofori-Atta blamed the Covid-19 pandemic and a sharp currency depreciation for the default, but critics say government profligacy was also a factor.

Operation Recover All Loot (Oral) was initiated by Mahama to document alleged cases of corruption. A report submitted in February claimed more than $20bn had been stolen.

Bright Simons, head of research at the Imani think-tank in Accra, said Mahama’s anti-corruption campaign was a response to public anger at a “deepening sense of impunity” among the political elite. “High-profile prosecutions are central to this strategy,” he said.

Ghana is considered one of Africa’s most successful democracies, with a reasonably buoyant economy despite the 2022 default.

But since the corruption probe was launched, the capital Accra has been gripped by fear. Officials who served in Akufo-Addo’s government have been privately wondering whether they would be next on the special prosecutor’s docket. Many describe the campaign as vindictive and attention-grabbing.

At least one former high-ranking Akufo-Addo adviser has taken to driving around Accra with private security to ward off police attention.

Ofori-Atta is the highest-profile, but not the only, former government official to be caught in the widening probe. In March, the private residence of Ernest Addison, former central bank chief, was raided at dawn by some 15 heavily armed soldiers searching for “vaults” he allegedly kept at home. No vaults were found, according to local media reports.

Imani’s Simons said Mahama, whose previous administration from 2012-17 was itself accused of corruption, had not made the “substantive changes” needed to root out the lingering perception of pervasive graft. The think-tank, and civil society as a whole, has called for greater transparency around government spending.

It is also pushing for merit-based appointments, “lifestyle audits” of those in government roles who live lavishly, and for unexplained wealth orders to be built into the civil service code.

An initial thaw in relations between Ofori-Atta and the OSP, headed by Kissi Agyebeng, broke down when the former finance minister sued the OSP, citing unlawful treatment and demanding the removal of “damaging” content from the agency’s social media accounts.

At a recent press briefing, Agyebeng said he had rejected Ofori-Atta’s offer to appear at a virtual hearing.

“We want him here physically, and we insist on it,” Agyebeng said. “A suspect in a criminal investigation does not pick and choose how the investigative body conducts its investigations and the methods suitable to him and his convenience.”

Ofori-Atta did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Revise VAT on mineral exploration

0

Michael Edem Akafia is the President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines Michael Edem Akafia is the President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines

The Ghana Chamber of Mines has called on the government to remove VAT on mineral exploration activities.

Michael Edem Akafia, President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, pointed out that exploration is crucial to the mining industry’s long-term sustainability, serving as its foundation.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com, he urged the government to reconsider the imposition of Value Added Tax (VAT) on mineral exploration activities.

He said this levy poses a significant impediment to discovering new mineral resources and sustaining future production in the mining sector.

The sector faces numerous challenges, including rising production costs, declining mineral reserves, and increasing competition from other mining destinations.

The imposition of VAT on mineral exploration activities exacerbates these challenges by increasing the financial burden on mining companies, particularly during the exploration phase when returns on investment are uncertain.

“The relevance of exploration in ensuring a pipeline of viable projects cannot be overemphasised. It is the single most critical activity that guarantees continued mineral production,” Akafia said.

According to him, removing VAT on mineral exploration activities could have several benefits for Ghana’s mining sector.

Indicating it would reduce the financial burden on mining companies, enabling them to allocate more resources to exploration and development activities.

Removing VAT on mineral exploration activities is a policy measure that could help revitalise Ghana’s mining sector.

By reducing the financial burden on mining companies and making Ghana a more attractive investment destination, this move could lead to increased exploration activities, new discoveries, and sustained production.

How the Financial Times featured Ken Ofori-Atta

Implementing nurses’ demands will destabilise economy – Mintah Akandoh

0

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has warned that fully implementing the demands currently outlined in the conditions of service for nurses and midwives could significantly destabilise Ghana’s economy.

His caution comes amid a nationwide strike by members of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), who are demanding immediate action on improved service conditions.

Speaking at a presser in Accra on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, Akandoh reiterated the government’s openness to dialogue but stressed the economic challenges tied to the current proposals.

The ongoing strike has disrupted health services across the country, with many public health facilities now operating with limited personnel.

The minister appealed to the leadership of the GRNMA to return to the negotiating table and work toward a compromise.

INEC-Ghana calls for levy on shoppers without reusable bags

0

By Florence Afriyie Mensah

Kumasi, June 10, GNA – The Institute of Nature and Environmental Conservation (INEC-Ghana) has raised concerns over the growing threat of plastic pollution in the country, calling on the government to implement stringent policies to curb the crisis.

Mr. David Kwarteng, Executive Director of INEC-Ghana, proposed the enactment of a law that mandates supermarkets and shopping centers to charge shoppers who fail to bring reusable bags, as a way of discouraging single-use plastic bag consumption.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in commemoration of the 2025 World Environment Day, Mr. Kwarteng stated: “Ghana is in a crisis. The rate at which we are using plastics is unsustainable.

Plastics are non-biodegradable, our waste disposal systems are poor, we dump plastics anywhere and there is so many so much sole use plastics.”

He emphasized that these challenges are exacerbated by the reality that the ocean has become a primary dumping ground for plastic waste, further intensifying environmental harm.

Mr. Kwarteng warned that plastic pollution poses serious health risks to ocean biodiversity, noting that aquatic animals, many of which are consumed by humans are ingesting plastic particles, thereby increasing the risk of plastics entering the human food chain.

Citing data from the 2023 World Economic Forum, he noted that Ghana produces approximately 840,000 tonnes of plastic waste annually, with only 9.5 percent collected for recycling.

Globally, around eight million tonnes of plastic waste leak into the ocean each year. If urgent and collective action is not taken, it is estimated that by 2050, there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean.

Mr. Kwarteng stressed the need for Ghana to take proactive measures, including the promotion of paper-based alternatives, increased public awareness on reusing plastics, and the development of durable, reusable shopping bags.

This year’s World Environment Day is being observed under the theme: “Ending Plastic Pollution: Repurposing Plastic Use.”

Ghana, US deepen trade cooperation – Minister holds discussions in Washington

0

The Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has held discussions with senior officials of the United States (US) Department of Commerce in Washington, DC, as part of efforts to deepen economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting was against the backdrop of the United States’ “America First” Trade Policy and the subsequent imposition of a blanket 10 per cent tariff on shipments from several countries, including Ghana.

The minister was accompanied by a Ghanaian career diplomat and acting Head of Mission at Ghana’s Mission in Washington, Ambassador Jane Gasu Aheto; the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr Mary Awusi, and the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, Abdul Razak.

The US party was represented by the Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Middle East and Africa, Thomas Bruns, and the acting Director/Designated Federal Officer for the President’s Advisory Council on Doing Business in Africa (PAC-DBIA), Giancarlo Cavallo.

The discussions centred on the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), local content policy, import regulations, outstanding debts to US companies and Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA).

Mrs Ofosu-Adjare reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with the United States and emphasised the importance of continued engagement on trade policy issues that impact both economies.

As the agreement on AGOA is set to expire in September 2025, the minister reaffirmed Ghana’s support for its renewal, emphasising AGOA’s role in attracting substantial US investments, particularly in Ghana’s flourishing garment and textile sector.

The Minister of Trade described AGOA as a “win-win” arrangement that had benefited both countries.

Speaking to the issue of local content policy, Ms Ofosu-Adjare told the US officials that the impact of Ghana’s local content regulations on US mining companies operating in the country had been reviewed.

The US delegation acknowledged Ghana’s proactive steps in initiating dialogue and expressed the willingness to work collaboratively on shared priorities.

Both sides agreed on the need for constructive dialogue to balance national development goals with investor interests.

US officials also raised concerns regarding the importation of excavators and overage vehicles from the US to Ghana, calling for greater regulatory clarity and improved standards compliance.

Addressing concerns about long-standing payments owed to American businesses, Mrs Ofosu-Adjare assured the US officials that the Ministry of Finance was working towards a timely resolution.

The discussions also called for a resumed dialogue under the TIFA platform to revitalise structured trade and investment relations between the two countries.

Context

The meeting marks an important step in Ghana’s broader efforts to re-engage global partners and reinforce the country’s commitment to trade diplomacy, economic cooperation and investment promotion.

As a follow-up to the discussions, Mrs Ofosu-Adjare, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Techiman North, will meet with the Office of the United States Trade Representative in the coming weeks to continue bilateral consultations on trade and economic issues of mutual interest.

Antoine Semenyo is being chased by top European clubs this season Antoine Semenyo is being chased by top European clubs this season

Tottenham Hotspur are making decisive efforts to sign Ghanaian striker Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth following his impressive performance in the 2024/2025 season in the Premier League.

According to a Sky Sports report, the prolific striker is also on the radar of Manchester United, who are said to be exploring a deal for the player to augment their team.

In the 2024/2025 season, Semenyo made 42 appearances, scored 23 goals, and made 7 assists to help Bournemouth secure a respectable position in the Premier League table.

‘Ken Agyapong Did Not Insult, But Offered Historical Insight for NPP’s Future’

0

Professor Samuel Adu-Gyamfi, a political historian at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to take a deeper look at the recent remarks made by Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a presidential aspirant for the 2024 elections as reported by Ghana Web.

Adu-Gyamfi clarified that Agyapong’s comments were not meant to divide the party but to encourage reflection for a stronger future, particularly in the 2028 elections.

In an interview on Bohobio Live on Hello 101.5 FM, the historian stated that Agyapong’s call for fairness and strategic thinking in the NPP’s candidate selection should be viewed as a “genuine plea” to safeguard the party’s future.

“Ken did not insult anyone or cast aspersions. His comments were deeply rooted in historical reasoning,” Adu-Gyamfi stated.

Drawing from history, Adu-Gyamfi pointed to the NPP’s past decisions, such as the party’s choice not to re-nominate Professor Albert Adu-Boahen after his 1992 loss, despite his pivotal role in Ghana’s return to multiparty democracy.

“The NPP made a pragmatic choice,” he said, stressing the need for a strategic approach to leadership, especially after setbacks.

The professor also referenced the NPP’s internal democracy, citing John Agyekum Kufuor’s second presidential bid in 2000 as an example of the party’s ability to learn from past mistakes.

He warned that the party must select a candidate who can unite and appeal to all regions in 2028, emphasizing the importance of “credibility, influence, and a clear vision” for the party’s future.

Elevate And Boost Your Mood With These Designs

0

Fashion has always been more than just clothing it’s a form of self-expression, a reflection of mood, and, increasingly, a tool for emotional well-being. The emerging trend of “dopamine dressing” encapsulates this idea, encouraging individuals to wear outfits that boost their mood through vibrant colors, playful patterns, and comforting textures.

Imagine starting your day by choosing an ensemble not just for style but for the joy it brings. A sunny yellow dress might evoke feelings of happiness and optimism, while a calming blue blouse can instill a sense of tranquility. This approach to dressing isn’t about following trends but about tuning into what makes you feel good.

The psychological impact of clothing, known as “enclothed cognition,” suggests that what we wear can influence our mental state and performance. By consciously selecting outfits that resonate with positive emotions, we can harness this effect to enhance our daily experiences.

Incorporating elements that spark joy be it a favorite accessory, a cherished color, or a beloved fabric can transform the act of dressing into a daily ritual of self-care. It’s about creating a wardrobe that not only looks good but also feels good, aligning with your personal sense of comfort and happiness.

You don’t have to wait for a reason to dress beautifully. In fact, making that choice consciously each day can become your form of self-love. These outfits are here to help you radiate strength, joy, and elegance whether you’re walking into a meeting, strolling through town, or dancing through your living room.

Let this collection remind you that fashion isn’t frivolous it’s personal, powerful, and transformative. Dress to express. Dress to elevate. Dress to feel alive.
