Co-Chair of the Citizen’s Movement Against Corruption, Edem Senanu, has urged Ghanaians to reflect on the excessive societal expectations placed on public officials, stressing that these cultural pressures are feeding the corruption many decry.
Speaking on TV3’s Keypoints programme on May 17, Senanu said, “The demands we are placing on them is what is leading to some of the things we are seeing and complaining about.
Millions of people are walking a financial tightrope, with one in 10 UK adults saving no money at all, a major report has concluded.
This leaves many exposed to economic shocks and vulnerable to rising bills, according to the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) Financial Lives survey.
Moreover, anxiety and stress levels were relatively high, particularly among those burdened by debt.
But the regulator said the situation had not worsened since the start of the cost of living squeeze and free help was available for those facing trouble.
The FCA’s Financial Lives survey is a benchmark for the state of the nation’s finances, with nearly 18,000 people questioned about how they deal with money.
The findings suggest that 13 million people – a quarter of the UK adult population – have low financial resilience. That means they have debts that are hard to manage, low savings, and have missed a series of bill payments.
This was unchanged when compared with the previous Financial Lives survey, published in 2022, despite the pressure caused by inflation and rising essential bills on personal finances.
Some 10% of those asked had no cash saved at all. Another 21% had less than £1,000 tucked away.
Other key findings in the wide-ranging report include;
A total of 2.8 million people have persistent credit card debt
Nearly 12 million people feel overwhelmed or stressed dealing with financial matters, including 40% of adults with credit or loans saying they suffer anxiety and stress
Some 3.8 million retirees are worried they don’t have enough money to last their retirement
Difficulties getting to a bank branch face nearly 10 million people
“Our data shows that finances are stretched for many – with some unable to save for a rainy day,” said Sarah Pritchard, from the FCA.
The report said that the use of buy now, pay later (BNPL) had “risen significantly” in recent years.
Nearly 11 million people had used BNPL in the previous year, which was two million more than the previous survey of three years ago.
Some 40% of lone parents and 35% of women aged between 25 and 34 use these deferred credit products, which remain unregulated.
Overall, nearly half of adults have outstanding unsecured debt, where the money borrowed is not backed up by assets.
The FCA said the median average amount of debt outstanding among those with debt was £6,300.
Among 18 to 34-year-olds with debt, the median average amount of debt outstanding was £12,500. But, after excluding student loans, that dropped to £1,300.
Debt advisers say they routinely speak to people with mental health issues, which either result in financial difficulties or are caused by money worries.
They say it takes courage to pick up the phone to ask for help, but free debt advice is available and has no impact on someone’s credit score.
How to deal with money worries
Matt Dronfield, managing director of Debt Free Advice – a coalition of charities which can negotiate with creditors on behalf of borrowers – said rent or mortgage arrears, council tax and falling behind on utility bills were the three most common forms of debt.
He said many callers were juggling multiple jobs, but unable to cover their essential expenses.
“It is so common. If you’re not worried, then a friend or family member is definitely going to be,” he said.
“We know you are more likely to tell your pet than your partner or loved one about your financial situation. So, speak to an expert debt adviser about the situation that you are in.
“If you were worried about your health, you’d see a doctor. If you’re car wasn’t working, you’d go to a mechanic. So, if you are worried about your finances, speak to an independent debt adviser, for free.”
He also said that people with no savings should consider “paying yourself first”, by putting a few pounds into a savings account when their receive their income.
This could help get them into a savings habit, while still being able to cover the priority bills.
The average amount people have saved is £5,000 to £6,000, the FCA’s report suggests.
U.S.-based Ghanaian political commentator, Kevin Ekow Taylor, exposed a further piece of corruption involving the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, who is currently the subject of proceedings to remove her from office.
In a post shared to X (formerly Twitter), Taylor exposed a deal in which a company formed by two of the Chief Justices’ daughters, Seyram and Edem Torkornoo, was granted a GHS 456,456 contract via restrictive tendering.
Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated that the key to overcoming Africa’s longstanding development challenges lies in a strategy he terms “smart formalisation”—a digitally driven approach to transforming public administration, economic systems, and service delivery.
Giving the keynote address at the Cambridge Africa Business Conference themed ‘Africa’s Digital Transformation: Building Resilient Economies Through Innovation,’ on Saturday, May 17, Dr. Bawumia lamented that after more than 60 years of independence, many African countries still face deep-rooted problems that hinder productivity and progress.
He outlined the major challenges including the lack of unique identification for citizens, absence of a functional national property address system, a large informal sector dependent on cash transactions, widespread financial exclusion, lack of individualised credit scoring, high interest rates, fragmented and manual government databases, inefficiencies in health service delivery, limited access to healthcare in rural areas, and poor revenue mobilisation due to weak tax compliance.
He argued that these conditions have led to low productivity, high unemployment, and persistent poverty across the continent.
“Let me quickly dive into what I believe presents the greatest opportunity to surmount these challenges and turn them into progress,” he said. “The solution will have to be one that accelerates Africa’s development… In short, it is what I term ‘smart formalisation’. In this regard, digital transformation is not just a policy aspiration—it is a necessity for resilience.”
Dr. Bawumia explained that “smart formalisation” involves building integrated systems that enable governments to know their citizens better and interact with them efficiently and affordably. He emphasized that this approach creates a “virtuous cycle” where governments deliver better services, citizens engage more transparently and safely, and development is accelerated.
Drawing parallels with the post-WWII development trajectories of countries in the Global North, he pointed out that modern technology—including blockchain, artificial intelligence, and mobile computing—gives African nations the chance to leapfrog outdated systems and adopt smarter, more inclusive economic models.
Dr. Bawumia therefore called on African governments to fully embrace digital transformation, not only as a modernisation effort but as a strategic solution to entrenched structural challenges.
Through “smart formalisation,” he believes the continent can foster inclusive growth, improve public service delivery, and build resilient economies.

The Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Samson Asaaki Awingobit, has praised the recent stability of the Ghanaian Cedi and the gradual decline in inflation, attributing the trend to enhanced coordination between the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana under President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, May 17, 2025, Asaaki applauded the policy alignment between Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Asiamah, which he said contrasts sharply with the lack of institutional cohesion in the previous administration.
“The Minister of Finance and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana under the previous administration were not communicating. These two institutions must work together — and that’s what we’re now seeing,” Asaaki remarked.
He emphasized that fiscal and monetary policies must align to sustain macroeconomic recovery, strengthen business confidence, and attract foreign investment.
“What Dr. Asiamah and Hon. Ato Forson have done is to bring confidence in inflation and Cedi stability. Going forward, they need to continue working together because the President put them there to support investor confidence,” he added.
Asaaki expressed optimism that the current trajectory will lead to a renewed wave of investment into Ghana, suggesting that the improving economic indicators are already attracting international attention.
“In a few days, you will see the number of investors who will be looking to come to Ghana,” he noted.
The Ghanaian Cedi has shown sustained recovery in recent weeks, with the exchange rate hovering around GH₵12.40 to the dollar, while inflation continues its downward trend — developments the business community sees as early signs of sound economic stewardship.

Celebrated gospel artist, Peterson Okopi, has narrowly escaped a life-threatening car accident.
The development has left his fans and followers in awe as they regard his safety as a testament to divine protection.
Naija News reports that Peterson Okopi, recognised for his moving worship melodies, announced the incident on Instagram on Saturday, posting a collection of images that displayed the extensively damaged front of his car, complete with broken glass and a bent hood.
The Fisheries Commission has stated that it will collect data during this year’s closed season to analyse the effect of the exemption of artisanal fishers from its observation.
The closed season, which aims at sustaining Ghana’s marine stock, would begin from July 1 and end on July 31 for inshore vessels, while industrial trawlers would also observe it between July 1 and August 31, 2025.
Artisanal fishers who form a large number of fishers in Ghana are, however, exempted from this year’s closed season following a directive from the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
The Director of Marine at the Fisheries Commission, Madam Esi Bordah Quayson, at a media forum powered by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), said the exemption was just for one year.
The forum was themed “Sustaining Ghana’s Closed Fishing Season: Science, Policy, and the Future of Fisheries”.
Madam Quayson said just as they did during and before every closed season, the Fisheries Commission would collect the data and do their biological analysis to see the difference between when everyone was observing the season, and when there was an exemption.
She said with that, they would come out with the necessary recommendations to help sustain the country’s fish stock while taking into consideration the economic plight of the coastal community.
She said even though before the introduction of the closed season as a conservation measure, the commission had a lot of consultation with stakeholders and got their agreement, it was normal to have a few people who would object to it.
“All is not lost; we are scientists; therefore, we must find alternative ways to reach the same results. We are not doing the close season alone but also with a moratorium running for three years to reduce effects on the resources,” she said.
Madam Quayson added that her outfit was also pursuing other measures to be implemented soon, disclosing that “the documents are almost ready for the reclassification to put a cap on the size of the canoe.”
Further, the fisheries minister was already talking about the closed area; therefore, they, as scientists, had identified some of the areas that they thought were vulnerable, such as the spawning grounds, feeding and nursery grounds, and resting spots for them to be earmarked for closing, Madam Quayson said.
She said that it was unfortunate that about 80 per cent of the artisanal fishers did not have alternative livelihoods, making it difficult to accept sitting at home for one month without fishing, revealing that “the fishers don’t want to hear anything about alternative livelihoods”.
Madam Quayson said these fishers were even being encouraged to go into aquaculture, but they did not want to, arguing that couldn’t wait for the fishes to grow.

Inusah Fuseini is a former Minister of Lands and Natural Resources
Former Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Inusah Fuseini, has taken a swipe at critics, especially proponents of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have said that the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, does not deserve credit for the gains the Ghana cedi has made against the US dollar and other foreign currencies.
Speaking during a panel discussion on ChannelOne TV on May 17, 2025, Inusah Fuseini laughed at the assertion when it was repeated by the Member of Parliament for Walewale, Dr Abdul Kabiru Tiah Mahama.
Dr Mahama suggested that the ongoing appreciation of the Ghana cedi could happen no matter who was finance minister.
Inusah Fuseini, who is a former MP for Tamale Central, asked Dr Mahama why the cedi did not make such gains during the tenure of former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.
“Kabiru said any finance minister could do what Ato is doing. But why didn’t Ken Ofori-Att do this? Why?” he asked.
The former Tamale Central legislator refuted the assertion that the Ghana cedi did not experience such gains under Ofori-Atta because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Covid brought in more resources than what we could even get in normal times. Covid brought in more than $3 billion and that was even external.
“The resources that we were able to mobilise internally were about $1 billion. If you add the Central Bank’s release to the government, you will come to realise that Covid was a blessing to the NPP government because they got a lot of resources. But what did they do with those resources?” he quizzed.

Akpo Abdou Moudjibou (face blurred) was allegedly behind major robberies in Accra from 2022 to 2024
The Ghana Police Service has announced the extradition of notorious Accra-based armed robbery suspect Adina Akpo Abdou Moudjibou from Togo to Ghana.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on May 17, 2025, the Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, said that Togolese authorities handed over Moudjibou, who goes by many aliases, to Ghanaian authorities over the week.
She said that Moudjibou, who has both Ghanaian and Togolese identity documents, has been captured on CCTV footage robbing residents of Accra in prime areas such as East Legon, Ridge, Tesano and Cantonments.
He was arrested by Togolese authorities in January 2025.
His release to Ghana was after the completion of the necessary regulatory documents.
“The GPS has been pursuing a known armed robbery suspect, Adina Akpo Abdou Moudjibou, whose activities have been captured in various CCTV footage and circulated widely on social media,”
“These criminal activities were primarily targeted at high-profile individuals residing in communities such as East Legon, Cantonments, Ridge, Tesano, Airport Residential Area, and Adjiringano within the Greater Accra metropolis between 2022 and 2024,” she said.
She added, “We are pleased to announce that on Wednesday, 14th May 2025, at approximately 08:30 hours, a five-member delegation from Ghana, led by myself, departed Accra aboard a military aircraft to Lome, Togo, to officially receive suspect Adina Akpo Abdou Moudjibou, who had been arrested and was in the custody of the Togolese authorities.”
DCOP Yaako Donkor stated that Moudjibou’s accomplice, Alidu Mansuk, was accosted in September 2024 and remanded by the court to assist with the investigation.
The CID Director General assured the public that the suspect was not going to escape from the place he is currently being detained as he awaits his prosecution.

Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has credited the recent stability of the Ghanaian cedi to the effective coordination of fiscal and monetary policies initiated under the Mahama-led administration.
Speaking on Channel One TV, Mr. Fuseini argued that the cedi’s improvement is not merely due to global economic trends but rather the result of deliberate domestic policy alignment.
“I think it’s the congruence of the monetary and fiscal policy of the government that is driving the change in the value of the cedi — the strength of the cedi,” he stated.
Fuseini acknowledged that external market conditions impact the broader West African subregion but pointed out that other regional currencies have not shown similar resilience.
“When you look at the West African subregion, the exogenous factors affect all of us, but the CFA is not performing that well, neither is the Nigerian naira,” he noted. “So largely, I try to discount what the external factors are.”

Interior Minister Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka has stated that the government’s crackdown on organised street begging in Accra marks the start of a wider, nationwide campaign to address the issue.
In an official update posted on his Facebook page, the Minister disclosed that a recent operation by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) resulted in the arrest of 2,241 foreign nationals involved in organised street begging in the Greater Accra Region.
The exercise was a sudden swoop that surprised even the public as motorists and bystanders held their breath, watching the smooth collection of those beggars from their regular spots of sleeping, begging or recreation.
According to the Minister, the operation was part of an ongoing initiative to restore public order and safeguard national security.
“I want to commend the personnel of GIS for their commitment to national security,” Muntaka stated. “I have seen the public reactions and calls for similar actions in places like Kumasi, Tamale, and other communities,” he wrote.
“Please be assured that this is a nationwide exercise that began in Accra and will be extended to other regions soon.”
The Minister also appealed for public cooperation as the operation expands beyond the capital, urging communities to support the effort to keep the streets safe and orderly.
“I count on your continued cooperation and support when the operations reach your communities,” he said, encouraging all Ghanaians to join hands with authorities,” he added.
University of Ghana law professor Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua has dismissed attempts to equate the Sammy Gyamfi dollar gift controversy with former sanitation minister Cecilia Dapaah’s corruption case, calling such comparisons “apples to bananas.”
Speaking on KeyPoints with Alfred Ocansey on May 17, he emphasized fundamental differences between the two scandals.
“In Dapaah’s case, money was physically found in her home, prompting an OSP investigation. Gyamfi’s incident involves a donation with unproven ties to malfeasance,” he stated. Appiagyei-Atua criticized claims that the Akufo-Addo administration would have handled the Gyamfi case impartially if roles were reversed: “We all know that is false, a disingenuous narrative to favor one party.”
The professor warned against conflating the cases without evidence, urging the NPP to avoid overextending its political defenses. He also accused the NPP of enabling “state capture,” alleging that party financiers influenced key decisions during their tenure. “Laws and policies were shaped by financiers, not public interest. The government wasn’t in control,” he claimed.

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has reasserted President John Dramani Mahama’s unwavering commitment to the successful implementation of the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway Development project.
He underscores the project as a vital driver of economic transformation and socio-economic development of not only Ghana but across the Sub continent, that reflects a unified and prosperous West Africa where infrastructure serves as the backbone of development.
The minister made these remarks on Tuesday at the Ministerial launch of the National Stakeholders and Community Engagement Campaign of Project-Affected Persons in Ghana.
The campaign, to begin next week simultaneously in the affected 32 communities in six regions across the country, is designed to foster open dialogue, build trust, and ensure that the voices of the affected communities are heard, understood, and integrated into the project’s planning and implementation processes.
The 520 Kilometre-highway spans from Elubo through Takoradi, Accra, Tema, Kasseh, Akatsi to Akanu border in the Ketu North District of the Volta Region.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) led initiative is expected to transform the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor into a modern, efficient six-lane dual carriageway with supporting infrastructure.
Agbodza indicated that the project was a testament to a shared commitment to regional integration, economic transformation, and sustainable development, which were key pillars of member nations’ strategic growth agendas.
“It underscores our unwavering dedication to fostering connectivity, stimulating economic opportunities, and strengthening the unity of our West African community when recognising its strategic importance for our nation’s growth and regional prosperity,” he added.
The ‘Big Push Agenda’ of the president aligns seamlessly with this initiative by providing enhanced financial and technical support for major road corridors such as the Eastern Corridor, the Western Corridor, the Upper Corridor and Outer Rings of our major cities that will serve as the connectivity backbone for our nation and our landlocked neighbors.
The objective of the sensitisation programme is to foster a well-informed and engaged environment where all stakeholders’ involving local communities, government agencies, businesses, and development partners are not only aware but actively participating in this pivotal transformative initiative.
The success of this historic project, the minister explained, depended critically on ensuring transparency, inclusivity, and mutual understanding, which are fundamental to building trust, securing political support, and advancing shared national development goals.
“Over the coming weeks and months, this programme will provide vital insights into the specifics of the Abidjan-Lagos Highway project, including its scope, timelines, and technical details and more importantly, anticipated benefits such as improved transportation efficiency, enhanced regional integration, increased trade opportunities, and socioeconomic development for our communities,” he indicated.
Moreover, Agbodza emphasised that infrastructure development was not just about constructing roads and bridges, it was about building connections by connecting communities, economies, and opportunities.
He expressed appreciation to ECOWAS, development partners, and stakeholders whose dedication and unwavering support were crucial to transforming “this ambitious vision into reality.”

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA), Mr. Christopher Boadi-Mensah, has called for a national dialogue to consider extending the country’s mandatory retirement age from 60 to 65, citing increased life expectancy and changing demographic realities.
Speaking before the Parliamentary Select Committee on Employment, Pensions and Labour on Thursday, Mr. Boadi-Mensah explained that advancements in healthcare mean many Ghanaians now live for decades after retiring, placing significant strain on the pension system.
Ghanaian consumers are experiencing significant relief at fuel stations following a sharp reduction in petroleum prices effective May 16, 2025.
The drop, projected by the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), stems from the Ghanaian cedi’s 12.8% appreciation against the U.S. dollar and declining global crude oil prices.
COPEC Executive Secretary Duncan Amoah confirmed the trend, noting petrol prices fell by 6.7%–8.8%, diesel by 4%–6%, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by approximately 10%. Major oil marketing companies (OMCs) have implemented adjustments, with GOIL reducing petrol to GH₵13.32 per litre, diesel to GH₵13.91, and premium fuel to GH₵15.19.
Shell now sells petrol at GH₵13.79, diesel at GH₵14.89, and premium at GH₵15.49, while TotalEnergies offers petrol at GH₵13.75, diesel at GH₵14.75, and premium at GH₵16.10. Discount retailers like Zen Petroleum and Frimps Oil provide lower rates, with Zen’s petrol at GH₵12.67 and diesel at GH₵13.85, and Frimps pricing petrol at GH₵13.05 and diesel at GH₵14.05.
The cedi’s rise from GH₵14.27 to GH₵12.45 against the dollar between May 1–15, coupled with a dip in global oil prices, reduced import costs. Diana Asamoah is calling on the FDA to take action against pastors who sell unapproved ‘sobolo’
Ghanaian gospel musician Diana Asamoah is calling on the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to take action against pastors who sell drinks labelled as ‘sobolo’ in churches without health approval.
Speaking on her show on Angel FM, the “Onyame Tumfo” singer raised concerns about the safety of such practices.
She pointed out that some pastors sell ‘sobolo’ as a form of “Jesus’ blood” for spiritual purposes, even though the FDA has not certified it as safe for consumption.
“Some pastors market sobolo as ‘blood’ despite the FDA not having tested it for safety. I am appealing to the FDA to carry out thorough inspections in churches to ensure these items are safe for consumption,” she said.
Diana Asamoah believes that before selling food or drinks in church, pastors should involve health experts to carry out medical checks.
According to her, this would help prevent health issues among church members who consume these products.
“Before selling sobolo or similar items, pastors should have medical doctors test their members’ health to confirm the product’s suitability,” she added.
She also said that there have been reports of people developing health problems like diabetes after consuming such unapproved items.
“There have been cases of people developing illnesses like diabetes after consuming such products,” she noted.

Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey says the exercise will begin May 20
The upcoming decongestion exercise by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) will target areas around the AMA Head Office, Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, Zongo Lane, and Opera Square to Adabraka on the first day of the operation, scheduled for Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
Day 2 will see action from Wato Junction through King Tackie Tawiah School and Cow Lane, UTC Road to Timber Market, and parts of the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, including Las Palmas and Glamour Road, while Day 3 will target the remaining portions of the Circle and the Kaneshie enclave, including Pamprom Lane and the footbridges.
The three-day phase exercise is being spearheaded by the AMA and the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA), with support from the Ghana Police Service, market leaders, transport unions, and other key stakeholders.
In a statement issued by the AMA on Friday, it said the exercise is in strict enforcement of the AMA Hawkers Bye-Laws (2017) and Section 117(1) of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180), both of which prohibit activities that impede pedestrian and vehicular movement in public areas.
The statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs on behalf of the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, directed all persons affected to vacate these locations by the close of day on Monday, May 19, 2025.
It added that prior stakeholder consultations had been held and confirmed that enough space exists within designated markets to accommodate traders.
The statement also announced the AMA’s intention to introduce a 24-hour city operation model as part of its urban renewal strategy, which would include a dedicated clean-up and security task force to support improved sanitation and safe night-time commercial activities in the capital.
The statement called on the public to lend their support to the exercise, urging full cooperation from affected groups to help restore order and dignity to the city.
The High Court in Kumasi has sentenced Dominic Afriyie, a 36-year-old armed robber, to 120 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for robbery and life imprisonment for murder.
The conviction, presided over by Justice Abdul Razak, marks a significant victory for the Ashanti Regional Police Command in their fight against violent crime.
According to a press release from the Public Affairs Unit of the Regional Police Headquarters, Afriyie, alias GH, attacked the residence of the late Michael Dela Agbo Klu, a 43-year-old pharmacist and building contractor, on November 20, 2021 at Atasemanso, Kumasi.
Armed with a gun, Afriyie stole two mobile phones, an ASUS Zenbook laptop, and GH¢1,500 in cash before fatally shooting Mr. Klu.
The release further stated that on December 30, 2021, police intelligence uncovered a planned robbery in the same area. A swift surveillance operation led to the arrest of Afriyie and three accomplices on December 31, 2021 at 2:20am in a Toyota Corolla with registration number AS 5970-20. Two pistols and two single-barreled shotguns were recovered from the vehicle.
Investigations confirmed Afriyie acted alone in the robbery and murder of Mr. Klu. Despite pleading not guilty, a seven-member jury and Justice Razak found him guilty after a full trial.
“The Ashanti Regional Police Command wishes to inform the general public that Dominic Afriyie has been sentenced to 120 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for two counts of robbery, and life imprisonment for murder,” the release said.

Kyebi (E/R), May 17, GNA – AMAGYEI Foundation, a social responsibility arm of an Accra-based law firm, has paid a courtesy visit to Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, Paramount Chief of Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council, to introduce its vision for community empowerment.
Leading the delegation was Madam Ofosua Amagyei, Managing Attorney of the Foundation, along with members of the advisory board.
The team outlined the Foundation’s mission to empower underprivileged individuals aged 16 to 45, equipping them with the necessary skills and resources to achieve self-reliance and support their families.
In her speech, Madam Ofosua said the foundation had liased with Ghana’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service, and the Complementary Education Agency to offer the youth with hands-on skills training and improve adults’ literacy for those with low education standard.
She said the AMAGYEI foundation since its inception in 2024, had equipped 85 youth with skills such as laundry bar soap, washing powder, hair shampoo, hair wig oil, bleach, and antiseptic disinfectant.
They were also taken through proper packaging, marketing, customer care, processes to register their products with the Food and Drugs Authority, and the Office of the Registrar of Companies.
She said the 85 beneficiaries comprised of 83 females and two males, out of which 10 people would be selected and provided with startup capital to fully establish themselves.
She presented some of the products to the chief to showcase her brand’s value.
She appealed for support in cash and in kind from benevolent organizations and individuals to expand the training services to many people in the area.
Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, donated 50,000 Ghana cedis to AMAGYEI Foundation to help sustain its infrastructural development.
He called on the distant natives to also contribute their quota to the development of the rural communities, especially social amenities including libraries, and health facilities.

The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Togolese Police, has arrested notorious armed robbery suspect Adina Akpo Abdou Moudjibou, alias Mohammed Djandjo, from his hideout in Togo following the issuance of an INTERPOL red notice.
The suspect, believed to be behind a series of high-profile robberies in affluent Accra neighbourhoods such as East Legon and Cantonments between 2022 and 2024, was arrested by Togolese authorities on January 30, 2025. He was handed over to the Ghana Police on May 12, 2025, under a regional cooperation agreement signed in Accra in December 2003.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Saturday, the Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, confirmed the arrest and extradition of the suspect.
“The GPS has been pursuing a known armed robbery suspect, Adina Akpo Abdou Moudjibou, whose activities have been captured in various CCTV footages and circulated widely on social media,” she said.
She explained that the suspect primarily targeted high-profile individuals residing in elite communities including East Legon, Cantonments, Ridge, Tesano, Airport Residential Area, and Adjiringano.
“These criminal activities were primarily targeted at high-profile individuals residing in communities such as East Legon, Cantonments, Ridge, Tesano, Airport Residential Area, and Adjiringano within the Greater Accra metropolis between 2022 and 2024,” DCOP Donkor added.
She also recalled a public assurance made by the police in a 2023 social media post: “On 3rd October 2023, you recall that the Ghana Police Service in a Facebook post assured the public that we were actively pursuing this case.”
Following that assurance, the police intensified security operations and intelligence-gathering in the affected areas. Their efforts culminated in a formal operation to retrieve the suspect.
“We are pleased to announce that on Wednesday, 14th May 2025, at approximately 08:30 hours, a five-member delegation from Ghana, led by myself, departed Accra aboard a military aircraft to Lome, Togo, to officially receive suspect Adina Akpo Abdou Moudjibou, who had been arrested and was in the custody of the Togolese authorities,” she stated.

A Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, slammed President John Dramani Mahama over what he describes as the president’s failure to appoint his promised total of 60 ministers and deputy ministers.
Haruna Mohammed, during a panel discussion on the Good Morning Ghana programme on May 16, 2025, took a swipe at the president while reacting to an assertion that Mahama had better leadership qualities than former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the NPP in the 2024 election.
He pointed to Mahama’s supposed failure to appoint his promised 60 ministers and deputy ministers as a sign of indecision, which, according to him, makes Mahama a bad leader.
“You are comparing Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to John Dramani Mahama. You know, President Mahama wrote his book, ‘My First Coup d’État’. He said that as a young man riding a bicycle down the lane, he could not take a decision on his own, he could not, and it manifested when he was given the mandate to be the president for his first term.
“He had to appoint three wise men to guide him in taking decisions. Today, as president in his second term, he promised us that he is going to appoint 60 ministers. Today, he has 56 ministers. Because of his indecisiveness, he could not complete the list at the stipulated time,” he said.
He added, “Yes, I agree he has a mandate of four years, but he gave us a period in which he should complete that… It is over 120 days. This indecisive man, who he (his co-panellist on the programme, Hamza) is touting for his leadership credentials, is not able to provide that. He’s not able to accomplish that.”
The NPP deputy general secretary said that former vice president Dr Bawumia has no match when it comes to leadership in Ghana.
“Let me tell you who Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is. When it comes to leadership and guidance in Ghanaian politics, Hamza would understand that Dr Bawumia has no match when it comes to politicking and leadership in Ghanaian politics.”
He urged that Dr Bawumia has revolutionised Ghana’s political landscape by making political campaigns issue-based.

Yaw Siki is a Ghanaian artiste turned gospel preacher
Ghanaian artiste turned gospel preacher, Yaw Siki, has disclosed that although he no longer does secular music, he still keeps in touch with some of his old friends in that industry.
Speaking in an interview on MX24 TV, Yaw Siki was asked if switching from secular music to preaching the gospel had affected his friendships.
In response, he explained that while their lifestyles may now be different, he has maintained relationships with a few of them, including rapper Sarkodie.
“Sarkodie is very spiritual; he even always reminded me to pray back then. The last time we were on a programme together, it was his programme in Kumasi. In his hotel room, you could hear him and the family praying in tongues,” Yaw Siki said.
He also mentioned that aside from Sarkodie, he is in contact with other musicians such as Dr Cryme and Stay Jay. However, because their paths and environments are now different, they do not spend as much physical time together as they used to.
The “Wope Dodo” hitmaker emphasised that although they no longer spend time together in person, they still maintain communication through various social media platforms.
“People like Sarkodie, I’m still in contact with him. People like Dr Cryme, Stay Jay, I am still in contact with them, just that we don’t walk together like we used to do before because the places that they would probably go or would be, I wouldn’t be there, and they wouldn’t also be in the atmosphere where I would want to be in. So, because of that, there isn’t much physical togetherness.
“From a distance, through WhatsApp and Twitter, we are in touch,” he explained.

Dodowa (GAR), May 17, GNA – The Government is considering setting up a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the acquisitions, allocation and use of public lands in Greater Accra.
President John Dramani Mahama said the Commission would work with chiefs, legal experts, historians and affected communities to produce a comprehensive report to guide and bring a lasting solution to a matter that had lasted for far too long.
The President made the disclosure in his remarks at the durbar of the Chiefs and People of the Greater Accra Region in Dodowa during his National “Thank You Tour” of the Region.
The National “Thank You Tour” is to enable the President express gratitude to Ghanaians for their massive support for him and the National Democratic Congress during the December 7, 2024 general election.
President Mahama noted that one issue that was repeatedly raised during engagements with communities across the Greater Accra Region was the matter of state lands and ancestral Ga-Dangme lands.
He reiterated that these concerns were valid and that he understood the historical injustices and emotional deaths tied to the matter.
He said as a result, one of the first directives he issued upon assuming office as President was to direct the Lands Commission to halt all sale and processing of all government lands, which was still in force.
President Mahama said following the receipt of the Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) Committee’s report, the Attorney General initiated investigations into the alleged looting of prime government and Ga-Dangme lands that were sold to individuals with political influence, some for as low as GH₵45,000; saying “meanwhile, these are lands whose values run into millions of cedis”.
With regards to chieftaincy disputes, President Mahama said while governments constitutionally could not interfere in the internal matters of traditional institutions, they were deeply concerned by the impact of unresolved disputes on the development of traditional areas in Greater Accra.
“I therefore urge all traditional councils to utilize the structures of the national and regional houses of chiefs to resolve matters of chieftaincy with dignity, true dialogue and with mutual respect.”
The President said the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs was ready to support and facilitate any resolution mechanisms fairly and neutrally.
Oboade Notse King Professor Odaifio Welentsi III, the Nungua Mantse and President of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, congratulated President Mahama on his historic election victory and come back.
He said President Mahama’s remarkable election signified two important things – the strong faith the majority of Ghanaians had in him and their dissatisfaction with his opponents.

Economist Professor Patrick Asuming has called for a fundamental shift in Ghana’s economic strategy, urging policymakers to reduce the country’s reliance on foreign financing in order to achieve long-term currency stability.
According to Professor Asuming, while Ghana has recorded consistent trade surpluses since 2017, the cedi remains vulnerable due to the economy’s structural dependence on external funding.
He explained that despite positive trade figures, the constant need to service foreign loans and the repatriation of profits by multinational companies continue to exert pressure on the local currency, particularly in the first quarter of each year.
“Over the long term what we have to do is to change the financing of the economy. I think the dependence on foreign financing is one of the remaining elements that we have to deal with,” he said.
“If you look, our trade balance has been in surplus since 2017, but within that period we realise that while the trade balance was always a surplus, because the economy is too dependent on foreign financing and we are always servicing loans, we are always paying foreign companies, then obviously in the first quarter when foreign companies have to repatriate, the pressure on the cedi comes,” he explained.
To address this, Asuming advocated for a gradual shift towards domestic sources of financing for Ghana’s long-term development goals over the next five to ten years.
In the short term, he urged the government to implement more practical measures to curb unnecessary imports, particularly food, which he described as a major contributor to Ghana’s trade imbalances.
“While we are doing that, in the meantime, whatever we can do to cut on the import of things that are not necessary for us to import [should be done]. There is absolutely no need for us to be extremely food dependent as we are at the moment,” he added.

Accra, May 17, GNA – The Human Rights Advocacy Centre (HRAC) has embarked on a targeted advocacy and sensitisation for young girls on the Affirmative Action Act 2024.
The initiative is aimed at ensuring the successful implementation and advocacy of the Affirmative Action Act in underserved communities across the country.
Madam Modupe Anorkplim Nukunu, Executive Director of HRAC, made disclosed this at the Affirmative Action Ambassadors training initiative in Accra.
She said the project would empower girls from remote areas with the knowledge and skills to become leaders and advocates in their communities.
Twenty girls selected from Bueman Senior High School and Tamale Technical Institute, received mentoring, financial literacy training, and practical exposure to media and leadership opportunities.
“We didn’t want the Affirmative Action Act to remain just a document on the shelves. These girls will serve as peer educators and young builders in their communities,” she said.
The Executive Director noted that the girls had undergone financial literacy sessions and media production training to broaden their perspectives on career opportunities.
She said her organisation would monitor the progress of the ambassadors over the next five years as they transitioned into tertiary education and leadership roles.
The monitoring, according to her, aligns with the Act’s goal of ensuring 40 per cent women’s representation in decision-making spaces.
Miss Gale Comfort Denis, a student at Bueman Senior High School, praised HRAC for organising the training, stressing that, “We will ensure that we become effective ambassadors.”
She said the programme would boost her interest in leadership roles, noting that she would contest any leadership position in her community.
Miss Ayisha Alhassan, a student of Tamale Technical Institute, said she was better placed to advocate for affirmative action in her community.
She said there was a significant deficit of women’s participation in leadership roles in her community, thus, her passion to change the trend.
She also noted that the training on financial literacy would enable her to save towards establishing her own business.

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Shaib Ahmed, has voiced his disappointment over President John Mahama’s decision not to appoint Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as a minister in his current administration as reported by Ghana Web.
Speaking on Starr FM on May 15, 2025, the Deputy Minority Whip described the omission as unexpected, given Dr. Zanetor’s qualifications and political pedigree.
Jerry Shaib highlighted Dr. Zanetor’s competence, noting that she could have effectively managed critical portfolios such as Health, Defense, or National Security.
“She is quite a sharp lady and the daughter of the founder of the NDC party. I never expected that President Mahama would not give her an appointment,” he said.
President Mahama’s government has been praised for their lean structure, with only 56 ministers and deputies appointed—the smallest cabinet size under Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
In his national address marking his first 120 days in office, Mahama emphasized that his administration is “the most efficient and leanest” in recent history, meeting his pledge to from a streamlined government.
Despite this achievement, Jerry Shaib believes the reduction in numbers should not have come at the cost of excluding key figures like Dr. Zanetor.
He suggested that the merging of the National Security and Interior portfolios might have influenced the appointment dynamics, but insisted that her exclusion was still surprising.

Accra, May 17, GNA – The Military High Command, led by Lieutenant General William Agyapong, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Ghana Armed Forces, has made a donation of one month of their Basic Salaries to President John Dramani Mahama in support of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares).
The Fund, which was launched by the President in April in fulfillment of his campaign promise, is aimed at relieving the financial burden of sufferers of chronic diseases (non-communicable diseases).
The CDS was accompanied to the Presidency by Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, the Defence Minister, Major General Lawrence Kweku Gbetanu, the Chief of the Army Staff; Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, the Chief of Naval Staff; Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong, the Chief of the Air Staff; and Air Vice Marshal Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai, the Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters.
Lt General Agyapong noted that the Military High Command was at the Presidency to lend their support to the noble venture that the President had established, the Mahama Cares.
“We share in the goal of this venture that seeks to provide financial assistance to individuals living with chronic diseases across the country, and especially to cover the cost of care and medication for non-communicable diseases not currently included under the National Health Insurance Scheme,” he stated.
“We are intrigued, and it is also heartwarming to know that persons with conditions such as cancers, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney failure, and stroke, among many others, will equally benefit from this fund. Your Excellency, that is why I and my Military High Command have decided to also contribute our one-month basic salary to the fund.”
He said they were embarking on a sensitization drive to urge all their soldiers and the defense civilian staff who were willing to also consider making some contribution no matter how little towards the fund, because they know that one day, as individuals, there might be the need for them to benefit from the Fund.
President John Dramani, who upon receiving the cheque, handed it to the Authorities at the Ministry of Health, expressed gratitude to the Military High Command for the kind gesture.
“It shows that aside from your primary responsibility of protecting our territorial boundaries and wielding weapons and driving armored tanks, you have a heart and soul beating in your chest, and that you have love of country and love of the people that you are protecting. And so on behalf of the people of Ghana, I wish to thank you for this initiative. Government has made budgetary allocation to kick-start Mahama Cares,” President Mahama said.
He said, however, that due to the extensive scope of coverage, it was obvious that government resources alone would not be sufficient hence the need for fundraising to top up whatever government had given.
The President said since the launch of the Fund, many private sector organizations, which were interested in helping to fund the programme, had made enquiries.
“And so I’m sure that we will be able to raise significant amounts of money to be able to provide the care that people need. One of the major collaborations we are going to do is with the private sector,” he said.
“And our requirements will be for the private sector to open dialysis centers in areas that don’t have them. And then also to train more physiotherapists and other people who are specialized in non-communicable diseases and spread them around the country so that people don’t only have to come to Accra and Kumasi, to the teaching hospitals to be able to receive care.”
This, he said, would involve the establishment of diagnosis and treatment centers so that they would be able to detect and treat these sicknesses.
Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, the Minister of Defence, commended President Mahama for the laudable Mahama Cares initiative.
He said it was laudable to support, particularly the needy, who suffered catastrophic health care expenditure and unable to cope with the situation.
He said it was heartwarming that within the President’s first 120 days he was able to set up the Mahama Cares initiative.

More than 8,000 Ghanaians have received new chip-embedded passports through a government-sponsored free courier service, Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced.
The initiative, part of the “Reset Passport Reforms” launched on April 28, 2025, aims to streamline access and eliminate delivery fees for applicants nationwide.
“This reflects our commitment to serve Ghanaians diligently and honor our pledges,” Ablakwa stated in a social media update, confirming that 8,463 passports had been dispatched without additional charges since the reforms began. Officials at the Passport Office noted the free delivery system is a key component of broader modernization efforts to enhance efficiency and user convenience.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized continued improvements to the issuance process, prioritizing security and accessibility. The chip-embedded passports, designed to curb fraud, align with global biometric standards.
The reforms address longstanding public frustrations over delays and bureaucratic hurdles, reflecting the government’s push to digitize essential services. Authorities plan to expand the program, aiming to further reduce processing times and ensure equitable access for all citizens.
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) yesterday swept some streets of Accra of ‘professional beggars’ of foreign nationalities in a massive exercise that sought to end the spectacle and break possible criminal networks.
Operating on intelligence, officials rounded up at least 2,241 people, 1,332 of them classified as children, who have made begging for alms their main source of livelihood in the capital.
The exercise was a sudden swoop that surprised even the public as motorists and bystanders held their breath, watching the smooth collection of those beggars from their regular spots of sleeping, begging or recreation.
Those arrested during yesterday’s exercise included 909 adults, of whom 384 were males.
From areas around the Kaneshie Market to Sabon Zongo, near Laterbiokoshie, Nima, Abossey Okai and Obetsebi Lamptey Roundabout, Immigration officers executed what looked to many like a rehearsed strategy to remove the supposed human public nuisance.
All those picked up during the exercise were moved into state buses and later transported to safety for screening and other relevant protocol before their intended repatriation.
“The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) undertook an intelligence-led operation in the early hours of Friday, May 16, 2025, to rid the streets of Accra of foreign nationals involved in street begging,” a statement later issued by the GIS said.
“The operation seeks to repatriate undocumented foreign nationals humanely, and disrupt criminal networks that facilitate their operations in places such as Sabon Zongo, Nima, Abossey Okai and Obetsebi Roundabout, among others,” the statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs of the GIS, Assistant Commissioner of Immigration Michael Amoako-Atta, added.
“The suspects are currently being taken through the necessary processes, including security and medical screening at the national headquarters in Accra.
The GIS assured all stakeholders and the public that the detainees would be handled with the highest professionalism and respect for their human rights.
The sight of beggars of foreign nationalities is common along the major streets of Accra.
Indeed, it appears to have become a lucrative enterprise for some investors who are believed to recruit professional beggars from neighbouring countries for the business.
While local authorities have repatriated many beggars on the streets of Accra in the past, a lot more have found their way back into the country to practise what now looks like a lucrative business.
It is claimed that the beggars account for their “sales” to their employers at the close of each day.
While these beggars are hardly known to possess landed property in the country, their reproduction system is, however, legendary.
The women among them continue to bear children, who soon accompany the parents, particularly the mothers, to the roadside to beg.
In some cases, the adults take a back seat while the children virtually harass motorists and pedestrians for money across a 24-hour cycle.
In June 2022, the government collaborated with the Embassy of Niger in Accra to repatriate over 1,600 beggars to Niamey in Niger, with plans to send back even more illegal migrants.
“They are a street nuisance and they have to be returned home immediately,” a source told the Daily Graphic in an interview.
At the time, the newspaper learnt that through a partnership with the government of Ghana, about 1,000 beggars, including children, had been mobilised for repatriation in accordance with migration regulations of Ghana.
In December 2021, the Caretaker Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, led officials of the ministry to collect data on the street children and their guardians, lodgings, means of operation and the age range of children involved in begging for alms.
The step was to use data to take initiatives, as well as seek a partnership with the Nigerien Embassy in Ghana, to rid the streets of those beggars and to protect the well-being of the children.
The Deputy Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah, has encouraged investors to take advantage of the investment opportunities in Ghana’s energy sector.
He made this remark at the Ghanaian-German Economic Association Business Forum, which was held under the auspices of the German Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Daniel Krull.
In his speech, the Deputy Minister disclosed that the ministry is ready to welcome investors in Ghana’s energy sector. He disclosed that the investment prospects in the energy sector are enormous, citing the growing electricity demand of 300MW annually and monthly petroleum product consumption of more than 400,000 metric tons.
“Ghana is a leading destination for energy investments in West Africa and beyond. As a government, our transformational agenda in the energy sector is anchored on 4 cardinal principles: energy security, affordability, universal access, and regulatory predictability.
“In the petroleum sector, the construction of a second Gas Processing Plant with a capacity of 150-300 mmscfd is under consideration. The country is planning to construct a new offshore mooring facility in Tema, and also storage will be expanded in Takoradi to accommodate the growing demand, reduce congestion and demurrage, guaranteeing a steady supply of petroleum products”, the Deputy Minister stated.
The Deputy Minister further noted that GRIDCo is reinforcing existing lines and building new lines in the electricity transmission sub-sector to improve supply quality.
He noted that the government is constructing a new 330kV line and a new transmission line from Tamale through Bimbila to Kejebi as well as upgrading the existing 69kV Asiekpe-Ho line to 161kV.
Gyan-Mensah further encouraged investments in renewable energy, reflecting in the President’s vision with the introduction of ‘Green Transition’.
“In implementing the National Energy Transition Framework, the Ministry is dedicated to increasing the proportion of non-hydro renewable energy from less than 3% to 10% by the year 2030 and continuing the construction of new the mini-hydro dams to meet the energy demand. For instance, the Ministry is rolling out 12,000 net-metered solar PV systems and 35 mini-grids. The Ministry is championing the Renewable Energy Authority Bill to promote renewable energy generation and investment. This shows our government’s commitment to Green Transition.”

The footage, shared by Adom FM on their social media platforms, captures the late musician spending time with his family in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA, on May 10, 2025, just seven days before his passing.
In the video, Dada KD is seen wearing a blue jacket over a white V-neck shirt, along with a blue bucket hat and a pair of spectacles.
The heartfelt family moment is accompanied by the voice of a woman in the background, cheering the late musician with playful and affectionate words.
At one point, Dada KD is introduced to a woman who appears to be asking whether he would be performing at an upcoming event.
The Highlife legend, known for hit songs like Fatia Fata Nkrumah, appears relaxed and cheerful as he engages in the conversation.
On the evening of May 16, 2025, news broke that Dada KD had passed away. The announcement has left many in the entertainment industry and among music lovers in shock and mourning.
What makes his passing even more heartbreaking is that, according to Nana Romeo, a close associate of the late musician, Dada KD was not ill and had shown no signs of any health issues.
He was reportedly in good health and was scheduled to perform at an event in the United Kingdom on May 25, 2025.

Kwasi Asante was appointed Director of Passports in December 2024
The Director of Passports, Kwasi Asante, has reacted to reports of a bench warrant issued by the Accra High Court for his arrest over the issuance of more than eight passports to an accused person who was being prosecuted.
In a public notice copied to GhanaWeb, Asante clarified that the incident occurred long before he took office as Director of Passports.
He stated that he was not involved in the issuance of the said passports and urged the public to disregard any insinuations of wrongdoing on his part.
“I wish to clarify that the recent reports regarding a matter at the Passport Office are inaccurate. The incident in question occurred before I assumed office at the Passport Office.
“I kindly request that the public disregard the misinformation and note that I was not involved in the matter, as it predates my tenure. I am committed to transparency and accountability in my role,” he wrote.
According to court documents sighted by GhanaWeb, although the accused person had been discharged following the withdrawal of the case by the Attorney-General, the presiding judge still requested that the Director of Passports appear before the court to explain how a single individual was issued more than eight passports.
The documents indicated that the bench warrant was issued during court proceedings on Friday, 16 May 2025, after the director failed to honour the court’s directive.
The documents further indicated that although Asante had been duly served, he had failed to appear before the court.
Kwasi Asante was appointed Director of Passports by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in December 2024.

Accra, May 17, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has assured the chiefs and people of the Greater Accra Region of his Government’s determination to provide them with good roads under the Big Push – National Infrastructure Development Programme.
He reiterated that he was aware of the frustrations caused by the congestion in the capital, the poor maintenance of roads, and incomplete road projects.
President Mahama made the remarks in his address at the durbar of the chiefs and people of the Greater Accra Region in Dodowa during his national “Thank You Tour” of the region.
The national “Thank You Tour” is to enable the President express gratitude to Ghanaians for their massive support for him and the National Democratic Congress during the December 7, 2024, general elections.
The President said under the Big Push, there would be rehabilitation and construction of key road corridors; such as the Adenta-Dodowa Road, the La-Teshie Link, the Tema Harbour-Tema General Hospital-Motorway Road, the Apolonia-Oyibi Road and the Tema Motorway Expansion, which were ongoing.
Others are feeder roads in Ga East, Ga South, Ningo-Prampram, including roads in Shai-Osudoku, Ada East, and Ada West, which were going to be fast-tracked under the Big Push.
He said additionally, the government would reconstruct the road from Dahwenya to Afienya, from Afienya to Dodowa, and also from Doryumu to Dodowa, and the Ashaiman to Madina roads.
President Mahama said under the same programme, major expansion works would take place on the Liberation Road, the Polo Court Road, Airport Aviance-El Wak to Christ the King Corridor, and on the Ring Road from the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange all the way to the La Beach Hotel.
He said they would also begin the construction of the Greater Accra Outer Ring Road, which would allow traffic that was continuing to the northern part and to the western part of the country to bypass Accra without coming through the city.
“And so it means trucks and others coming from Lome and going to Kumasi or to Takoradi don’t need to come through Accra City, they’ll pass on the Outer Ring Road and continue their journey,” the President explained.
He said as a permanent fix to decongest Accra, the government would begin the design and feasibility study for a new city.
The President noted that some of the government offices and agencies would be moved out of Accra to the new city.
“I believe that this city will be located somewhere on the Accra plains from Bundasi, straddling across Greater Accra, Eastern and Volta regions. The city will straddle three regions,” the President said.
He said the new city would stretch to the banks of the Volta River and there would be a railway link and an expressway that would link the new city to Accra.
Oboade Notse King Professor Odaifio Welentsi III, the Nungua Mantse and President of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, congratulated President Mahama on his historic election victory and come back.
