EU, Ghana Mark Europe Day

0

Irchad Razaaly

THE EUROPEAN Union (EU) celebrated its annual Europe Day with the Government of Ghana, private sector and civil society partners last Friday in Accra.

The occasion created an opportunity for the two countries to celebrate enduring ties which have spanned 60 years of transformative partnership rooted in shared values of democracy, sustainable development, and inclusive growth.

Addressing dignitaries, EU Ambassador in Ghana, Irchad Razaaly noted that the partnership between Ghana has driven concrete progress in trade, infrastructure, education, health, peace and security, emphasising that under the union’s Global Gateway policy, the EU and member states have invested over €800 million — about 13 billion Ghana cedis  in infrastructure.

Also, investments of (€55m) in local vaccine production, the retro-fit of the Kpong dam (€62m), and a projected €370m towards smart and sustainable cities in northern Ghana.

He stated that EU is Ghana’s primary partner on peace and security, delivering critical military equipment under the European Peace Facility, worth another €50 million, while adding that approximately 1,000 Ghanaian students fly over annually to the best universities in Europe with the help of scholarships offered by the EU and its member states.

“The EU remains a credible, reliable and a dependable partner to Ghana. In these turbulent times, it is ever more important to collaborate with like-minded friends and allies. We are here to stay,” he added.

Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, praised the EU’s long-standing partnership with Ghana, highlighting cooperation in critical areas such as trade, green economy, digital innovation, governance, education, and security.

The minister further indicated that the upcoming EU-Ghana Business Forum is an opportunity to strengthen investment relations and foster collaboration.

“The partnership with the EU has been pivotal to Ghana. Together, we advance priorities from education to youth employment and infrastructure, ensuring no one is left behind,” he stated.

I still consider you my heroine – Afua Asantewaa’s husband celebrates her after second sing-a-thon attempt

Media personality Afua Asantewaa Aduonum Media personality Afua Asantewaa Aduonum

Kofi Owusu Aduonum, husband of Ghanaian media personality Afua Asantewaa Aduonum, has hailed his wife as a heroine despite her second unsuccessful attempt to break the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest individual singing marathon.

In a heartfelt piece, Kofi Aduonum praised her courage, stating, “Bebe (Afua Asantewaa Aduonum) as I fondly refer to you, to say you have demonstrated bravery in your two successive Guinness World Records (GWR) attempts is an understatement.”

The GWR disqualified Asantewaa’s 121-hour, 39-minute Singathon, held from December 21 to 25, 2024, at Heroes’ Park, Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, on May 8, 2025, citing a violation of rest break rules, specifically a 15-minute break when only 10 minutes were accrued.

Despite this, Kofi wrote, “The recent results- GWR citing failure to adhere to the five minutes break as the reason for not handing you the certification notwithstanding, I still consider you as my heroine.” He added, “For a woman, and a mother of three for that matter to embark on such a herculean task deserves a pat on her shoulder.”

Kofi detailed the grueling logistics, noting, “The enormity of the attempt had a toll on me and has still not recovered from the sleepless nights. I made sure, what she will eat, drink, wear as well bathing was done within the limited five minutes.”

Preparations according to Kofi Aduonum involved multiple Accra-Kumasi trips, media tours with outlets like Akoma FM and Kesben FM, and securing the venue with support from the Ashanti Region National Sports Authority.

A key moment he noted was their meeting with Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who offered blessings after initial challenges.

Addressing past criticism following Asantewaa’s 2023 attempt, Kofi apologized for any miscommunication that led to cyberbullying, particularly over perceived ingratitude toward former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s support.

He clarified, “Our presence at Dr Bawumia’s house after the first attempt to say thank you was enough evidence of how grateful we were.”

Marking Asantewaa’s birthday and Mother’s Day on May 11, 2025, he wrote, “You have been such a lovely friend and a great personality… happy birthday and happy Mothers Day.”

Despite the GWR outcome, Kofi also saluted Asantewaa’s determination to promote Ghanaian music globally.

Cedi rally cutting foreign debt load

0

The improving cedi is beginning to reshape the nation’s debt profile, as it is helping to reduce the foreign component of the country’s overall debt stock.

The local currency, which has rallied sharply – particularly over the last two weeks – after steep losses since the middle of 2022, is offering some respite to government… which is still navigating heavy debt service obligations and tight fiscal conditions.

Official data show that the gross public debt in dollar terms declined by US$3billion year-on-year in nominal terms to US$49.4billion in 2024. However, the cedi-denominated debt stock increased by GH¢116.7billion (a 19.1 percent increase year-on-year) to GH¢726.7billion by end-December 2024, reflecting the cedi depreciation effect.

Thus, while the net effect of permissible external borrowing in 2024, debt savings from Eurobond restructuring and the cedi’s correction late in the fourth quarter of 2024 resulted in a significant US$3billion reduction in the debt stock in dollar terms, the pronounced net depreciation recorded in the year eroded these gains – underpinning the 19.1 percent increase in cedi terms.

The cedi’s resurgence, after depreciating 19.2 percent against the US dollar in 2024 has been a central factor in this turnaround. Since the start of 2025, the currency has appreciated by 10.5 percent, strengthening from GH¢14.71 to the dollar in December 2024 to GH¢13.31 by end of the first week in May 2025. The gains have also been felt against the British pound and euro, with respective year-to-date appreciations of 5.9 percent and 5.8 percent.

Analysts attribute this unexpected rebound to a confluence of supportive conditions. Chief among them is a dramatic surge in gold prices which have risen from approximately US$2,000 per ounce in early 2024 to US$3,400 per ounce by May 2025, with Ghana benefitting as the sixth-largest gold producer in the world.

Gold exports rose to US$11.6billion in 2024, up from US$7.6billion in 2023 – helping to produce a trade surplus of US$4.98billion and easing pressure on the country’s external reserves. Additionally, the country is incrementally increasing its share of gold receipts from the gold for reserves programme, which has metamorphosed into the Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD); which, together with the gold rally, has supported reserve build-up.

Kwadwo Acheampong, a financial analyst, said the steady build-up of reserves is “definitely a good omen for the economy”.

According to him, “The more and faster we build up, the better; because it could get to a certain point in time when we will have built up enough and whatever externalities happen… we should be okay”.

He noted that if reserves were significantly higher – say US$200billion instead of US$5billion – external shocks would have a much smaller impact on economic stability.

At the institutional level, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and newly mandated Gold Board (GOLDBOD) have stepped up gold purchases, particularly from small-scale miners. BoG gold holdings expanded from just under nine tonnes in May 2023 to more than 31 tonnes by April 2025. This accumulation helped drive the BoG’s gross international reserves up from US$6.2billion in February 2024 to US$9.4billion a year later, bolstering its capacity to supply foreign exchange into the market.

Mr. Acheampong also sees strategic opportunities in linking gold reserves to alternative trade mechanisms: “If gold purchase goes up, then it strengthens our ability to engage in barter – gold for oil or gold for something else. So instead of doing things that will increase our exposure to hard currency fluctuations, we are using what we have – our intrinsic strength – to guard against them”.

He suggested that such arrangements could be extended beyond oil to include machinery and equipment, reducing the country’s reliance on hard currency.

Policy intervention has also been key. After actively intervening in the foreign exchange (FX) market in late 2024 to pull the cedi from GH¢16.4 to GH¢14.7 per dollar, BoG transitioned to providing forex on the spot market in 2025.

This shift away from its reliance on forward auctions, analysts say, has eased concerns among businesses about the availability of foreign currency and supported stability in the FX market. At the same time, the central bank raised its policy rate from 27 percent to 28 percent in March 2025 – tightening liquidity conditions and improving the appeal of cedi-denominated assets to investors.

Combined with fiscal policy signals, including a hold on GH¢69billion in arrears payments pending audit and a steep drop in Treasury bill rates – from 28-plus percent to around 15 percent for the 91-day bill – the policy mix has underpinned a rising confidence in the short-term macroeconomic outlook.

Mr. Acheampong however cautioned that the gold reserve strategy’s success also depends on effective regulation. “Take a look at the programme. See if regulation in a certain way is required, not only to ensure that we keep on increasing but also to safeguard against things that could serve as a risk… like galamsey, where the gold is not being sold through government avenues.” He added that the GOLDBOD must ensure transparency and account for all gold mined in the country to sustain the strategy’s long-term benefits.

This optimism is reflected in the BoG’s Business Confidence Index, which reached 99.7 in February 2025 – its highest level since December 2020. Political stability following the December 2024 election in which President Mahama secured a decisive mandate and his main rival, Dr. Bawumia, conceded swiftly, has further strengthened investor sentiment.

Still, significant risks remain. While the cedi’s appreciation has helped moderate the foreign component of the debt stock – with latest official estimates at GH¢416.8billion (US$28.3billion) or 57.4 percent of the total – Ghana’s debt servicing profile is heavily front-loaded.

Between 2025 and 2028, government is expected to pay GH¢150.3billion in domestic debt service obligations alone, equivalent to 11.6 percent of GDP. Over 73 percent of this amount is due in just two years: 2027 (GH¢57.6billion) and 2028 (GH¢52.5billion).

Government’s external debt service burden is similarly concentrated. It is scheduled to make US$8.7billion in payments between 2025 and 2028, with 55 percent falling due in 2027 and 2028. These payments come when the country’s financing options are still constrained, limited largely to short-term Treasury instruments following the domestic debt exchange.

Weekly rollovers of maturing Treasury bills continue to place considerable strain on cash flow, while COCOBOD’s debt obligations add further fiscal pressure. As of 2024, COCOBOD’s outstanding debt stood at GH¢32.5billion, with GH¢9.7billion due for payment by end of September 2025. In addition, cocoa road contracts amounting to GH¢21billion have only been partially accounted for in its financial statements.

In response to these pressures, government has made strides in restructuring its debt. As of early 2025, approximately 93 percent of the programme is complete. This includes the exchange of US$20.3billion in domestic notes and bonds, US$13.1billion in outstanding Eurobonds and US$5.1billion in bilateral official debt.

The Eurobond restructuring resulted in a 37 percent nominal haircut (US$5billion), service relief of US$4.3billion during the IMF programme window (2023–2026) and a reduction in coupon rates from an average 8 percent to 4 percent. Initial repayments under the new Eurobond terms – US$501million in October 2024 and US$349.5million in January 2025 – have been made on schedule.

Bilateral agreements are also progressing, with the nation signing an MoU with the Official Creditor Committee in January 2025 to restructure US$5.1billion of official debt. Discussions with commercial creditors – including Chinese lenders and private institutions owed approximately US$2.7billion – are ongoing.

The IMF has signalled its endorsement of these efforts, reaching a staff-level agreement with Ghana on the fourth review of its three-year programme. A disbursement of US$370million is expected following board approval, which would further strengthen Ghana’s external balance.

Celebrity Shock: Felicia Osei Denied Entry at TGMA 2025

News Hub Creator46min

Ghanaian high-profile celebrity Felicia Osei has expressed disbelief after being denied entry at the prestigious Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) 2025. The socialite and businesswoman took to Instagram to share her frustration in a viral video, where she recounted the embarrassing incident. Osei, known for her influential status and regular appearances at high-end events, claimed she was “bounced” at the entrance despite having proper accreditation. The incident has sparked widespread reactions from fans and industry insiders alike.

In the emotional video, Osei detailed how she was turned away at the red carpet, leaving her shocked and humiliated. “I couldn’t believe this was happening to me,” she said, questioning the event’s organization and gatekeeping protocols. Sources suggest there may have been a mix-up with her invitation or seating arrangements, though official statements from TGMA organizers are yet to clarify the situation. The incident has raised questions about celebrity treatment at major award shows and the importance of proper guest management.

This year’s TGMA, held at the Grand Arena in Accra, saw Ghana’s biggest music stars in attendance, making Osei’s exclusion even more noticeable. Social media has been divided in reaction, with some sympathizing with her experience while others speculate about possible reasons behind the incident. Event management experts emphasize that such high-profile occasions require meticulous planning to avoid embarrassing situations that could tarnish both the event’s and attendees’ reputations.

As the story gains traction, all eyes are on the TGMA organizers for an official explanation. The incident serves as a reminder of the complex dynamics of celebrity access at exclusive events and the potential fallout when things go wrong. Whether this was an innocent mistake or indicative of deeper issues in event management, it has certainly become one of the most talked-about moments of this year’s awards season. For Osei, the hope remains that this unfortunate experience won’t deter her from gracing future red carpets.

President must follow due process in suspension of CJ -Mama Pat

The Deputy Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Asokwa, Patricia Appiagyei, popularly known as Mama Pat, has raised concerns over the involvement of “politicking” in the affairs of the Judiciary, the third arm of government.

She noted that the Judiciary is the last institution of government that needs to be safeguarded, from being used as a medium for politicking.

Afeku Declares Intention To Contest NPP Women’s Organiser

Catherine Abelema Afeku addressing the gathering

A former Member of Parliament (MP) for Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira Constituency in the Western Region, Catherine Abelema Afeku has officially declared her intention to contest the National Women’s Organiser position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) come the next national officers’ election of the party.

According to her, the party needs a dynamic woman who is proactive, affable, hardworking, respectful and who has been tried and tested to take over as the next national women’s  organiser of the NPP, to help the party recapture power in 2028.

She has, therefore, appealed to the party’s executives at all levels and all NPP activists to support her bid.

The former Tourism Minister made the declaration at a special get-together she organised for hundreds of women, including queen mothers, women groups, and members of NPP women’s wing in the constituency.

The event was to mark the celebration of Mother’s Day yesterday.

Madam Afeku pledged to work hard with the rest of the next NPP national executives when given the nod, and called on the chiefs and people of Nzema and the Western Region as a whole to pray and support her to achieve the aim.

She indicated that come what may, the NPP will win the 2028 general election, but the party would need a dynamic woman to lead in mobilising women nationwide to vote massively for the NPP.

“Currently, I am the only one from the Western and Western North Regions who has expressed interest in the position.

“I believe that since the best comes from the West, Afeku would emerged as the next NPP National Women’s Organiser and help the party win the next general election,” she pointed out.

Meanwhile, a cross section of the women who attended the programme said Madam Afeku has what it takes to unite the women in the party from the grassroots to national level.

According to them, even though there are other equally qualified women, Madam Afeku stands taller among them and, therefore, deserves to be given the nod.

“Afeku would help to ensure the party functions well to secure victory in the 2028 general election and beyond,” they pointed out.

Catherine Afeku entered into Ghanaian politics in the early 2000s during the presidency of John Agyekum Kufuor.

She was a Government Spokesperson for Infrastructure.

She was an MP for Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira from 2008 to 2012, but lost her re-election bid in the 2012 general election.

She again won the seat and became MP from 2016 to 2020, but lost the 2020 and 2024 parliamentary elections.

She was a cabinet minister in the Nana Akufo-Addo administration and served as the Minister of Tourism from February 2017 to February 2019.

Ablakwa’s Absence from Dam Spillage Probe Explained by Committee Chair

Ablakwa Okudzeto
Ablakwa Okudzeto

The chairman of the Akosombo Dam Spillage Committee has addressed why North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, now Foreign Affairs Minister, wasn’t personally interviewed during the investigation into last year’s devastating floods.

Engineer Kirk Koffi revealed the minister’s demanding schedule made direct participation impossible, though his constituency provided comprehensive testimony through local leaders.

The committee’s 126-page report, submitted to the Energy Ministry last week, confirmed the controlled water release from the dam was a “necessary evil” to prevent catastrophic failure after unprecedented rainfall. The disaster submerged communities across five districts, destroying 1,247 homes, 94 schools and causing $78 million in agricultural losses.

“Minister Ablakwa’s current responsibilities made him unavailable, but North Tongu’s assembly members, chiefs and residents gave us one of the most detailed accounts,” Koffi told TV3. He praised the MP’s relief efforts while explaining that first-hand accounts from affected residents and local officials provided sufficient evidence for their findings.

The investigation identified systemic failures in emergency communication and resource distribution despite the unavoidable nature of the dam’s water release. Climate change impacts and human activities near waterways were noted as exacerbating factors.

Koffi’s clarification comes as displaced communities continue rebuilding, with many still awaiting full compensation. The report’s recommendations are expected to inform new protocols for dam management and disaster response, particularly for vulnerable riverside communities. Analysts suggest the findings may prompt revisions to national water resource policies as extreme weather events become more frequent.

Men Afraid Of Fertility Test – Racheal Hesse Matey

Racheal Hesse Matey

A Midwifery Officer at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (GARH) – Ridge Hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, Racheal Hesse Matey, has encouraged men to muster the courage to undergo fertility testing when experiencing difficulties conceiving with their spouses.

Speaking at her annual health sensitisation event themed “Infertility and its related obstetrical issues,” Ms. Matey emphasised that in many scenarios, especially in some African cultures, masculinity is closely tied to fertility and the ability to father children, which makes men feel that undergoing fertility test would be a blow to their masculinity or reputation.

“Infertility is not only a woman’s problem, because a woman cannot get pregnant. The woman needs a man to get her pregnant, so when there is a problem, it could either be the fault of the man or the woman,” she said.

She emphasised that most often, when there is such a problem, the woman is pressured as the main cause of the problem. “We will see the woman moving from corner to corner, taking medications to help solve the infertility problem. Meanwhile, if you probe further, the man has not conducted any tests to prove if he has viable sperm that will fertilise the woman’s eggs. In some cases, it is the men who have an infertility problem,” she disclosed.

Ms. Matey attributes this to infertility stigma and fear of being blamed or shamed for any fertility issues, emphasising that her call to action aims to promote men’s involvement in reproductive health and address potential fertility issues.

She also touched on categories of infertility, stating that primary infertility occurs when a couple has not conceived at all, while secondary infertility occurs when a couple has had one or more children but faces difficulty conceiving again.

“Having one or two children does not guarantee future fertility. Each pregnancy is unique, and challenges may arise when trying to conceive again. Understanding these fertility types can help individuals seek medical help when needed,” she added.

Addressing the myth that the size of a penis determines the viability of the semen, Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Midway Hospital, Dr. Gifty Quarshie Ngissah dismissed the analogy, stating that the size of the penis does not determine the viability of the semen.

She added that sperm quality and fertility are determined by sperm count, sperm motility (movement), sperm morphology (shape and structure), and volume, while emphasising that a man’s fertility is determined by the quality of his sperm, not the size of his penis.

She also addressed the issues of commercialisation of fertility drugs, lamenting the increasing sales of unapproved fertility drugs in the country. “This commercialisation issue is a big deal because many women in their pursuit of children get to take some drugs, which end up damaging their system,” she added.

Bagbin urges NHIS reform to ease burden on lupus patients

0

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called for increased investment in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to enhance healthcare delivery, particularly for patients battling lupus and other autoimmune diseases.

Mr. Bagbin emphasised the urgent need to integrate lupus care into the NHIS, noting that many patients face significant financial burdens due to the high cost of treatment.

He made the call during a meeting with the Oyemam Autoimmune Foundation to mark World Lupus Day, observed on May 10, 2025, at Parliament House in Accra.

At least five million people worldwide live with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body—from the skin and joints to the heart and kidneys.

World Lupus Day was first observed in 2004, with various events held globally to highlight the significance of the condition.

One of the most notable milestones was the issuance of the inaugural World Lupus Day Proclamation, recognising the day and demonstrating global concern for the needs of millions of individuals affected by lupus.

Ghana ratified the World Lupus Day Proclamation in 2017.

Mr. Bagbin said that strengthening the NHIS to cover such chronic conditions would alleviate the economic strain on affected individuals and improve access to essential medical care.

Emma Halm Danso, Executive Director of the Oyemam Autoimmune Foundation, echoed the Speaker’s sentiments, stating that lupus is often misunderstood and underdiagnosed in Ghana.

She pointed out that many patients suffer from misdiagnosis and delayed treatment, leading to severe health complications.

Halm Danso called for the establishment of specialised lupus clinics and increased public education to raise awareness about the disease.

The Foundation also urged the government to include lupus medications under the NHIS, as the current out-of-pocket expenses are prohibitively high for many patients.

The Oyemam Autoimmune Foundation is a duly registered non-profit organisation committed to inspiring hope in people affected directly or indirectly by autoimmune diseases.

“We demonstrate our commitment through advocacy, awareness-raising, education, counselling, and fundraising to provide support services such as medical assistance for people with autoimmune diseases,” she said.

Perpetrators of Nana Pooley’s murder will be punished – Kofi Adams

0

A solemn wreath-laying ceremony was held last Friday at the forecourt of the Accra Sports Stadium to mark the 24th anniversary of the tragic May 9 Accra Sports Stadium Disaster, which claimed the lives of 127 football fans during a Ghana Premier League match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko in 2001.

Regarded as Ghana and Africa’s biggest stadium disaster, the commemorative event brought together the Minister of Sports and Recreation (MOSR), Mr Kofi Iddie Adams; the Chief Director, Mr William Katey; the Acting Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mr Yaw Ampofo Ankrah; and the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku.

Also present were the former chairman of Hearts of Oak,

Mr Harry Zakour, Managing Director of Hearts of Oak; Dr Delali Anku-Adiamah, Marketing Manager of Asante Kotoko, Mr Charles Kwaku Hammond ex-footballers and members of the bereaved families.

Mr Adams laid a wreath on behalf of the President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana.

Mr. Adams stated that although football was a game with great passion, that passion should never escalate into violence, regardless of decisions made or outcomes.

Mr Adams lamented the worrying resurgence of hooliganism in Ghana football, citing the recent death of a Kotoko fan, ‘Nana Pooley’ as a tragedy that must not be repeated.

“The loss of Nana Pooley recently should not have happened. The government of President Mahama is determined to collaborate with the Ghana Police to ensure that every single person behind this act is punished. We will not shield anybody, no matter their status,” he stressed.

The GFA President, Mr Okraku urged stakeholders to remain committed to fighting hooliganism in the sport, stating that “hooliganism has no place in our football. If we continue to misbehave, we will continue to lose lives, which is not the essence of football.”

Five spectacular performances that got social media talking

From L to R: Stonebwoy, Fameye, KiDi and Maame Tiwaa at TGMA 2025 From L to R: Stonebwoy, Fameye, KiDi and Maame Tiwaa at TGMA 2025

Some performances at the just ended Telecel Ghana Music Awards 2025 entertained and left a mark. At this year’s Ghana Music Awards, a few artistes went beyond expectations and gave the kind of performances that had everyone talking online.

From vocals to creative stage setups and emotional moments, these acts reminded patrons why live music still matters.

In this article, GhanaWeb takes a look at five performances that stood out and got fans buzzing on social media for all the right reasons.

Even after ten years in the game, he performs with the hunger of someone still chasing greatness.

Maame Tiwaa

When Maame Tiwaa walked onto the TGMA stage, everything seemed to pause. In the middle of all the lights and excitement, she brought a peaceful, heartfelt moment.

Her performance was a tribute to gospel music legend Yaw Sarpong, who couldn’t be there due to health reasons. As his longtime musical partner, she stepped up and sang with so much love and respect, it felt like he was right there with her.

Maame Tiwaa’s voice carried Yaw Sarpong’s legacy beautifully, and when the crowd joined in, singing along, it felt more like a church service than an award show.

He brought on stage everything fans love about him: smooth vocals, charm, and that confident, flirty energy.

KiDi’s set had a lot of visual appeal too, with sharp outfit changes, colorful lights, and dancers from Dancegod Lloyd’s academy who matched his vibe perfectly.

KiDi’s stage presence felt natural, and he won the heart of more fans with how well his performance was.

In a bold affirmation of President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to overhaul Ghana’s regulatory infrastructure and promote fair trade, the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry has launched a major national initiative to train 350 new Trading Standards Inspectors (TSIs).

This forms part of a sweeping effort to enforce standardised measurements, ensure quality control and prepare the economy for full 24-hour industrial activity.

Speaking at the opening ceremony in Koforidua, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, emphasised that the training initiative is a direct presidential directive and a matter of national priority.

“This training is not a routine activity—it is a presidential directive in action. It represents our shared commitment to building a fair, competitive and industrially vibrant Ghana,” she said.

In a show of strong political will, Madam Ofosu-Adjare was accompanied by her deputy, Sampson Ahi, the Ministry’s Chief Director, Noah Tumfo and other senior officials.

Also present was the Director-General of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Prof. Alex Dodoo, who described the TSIs as the vanguard of a new regulatory era.

“To trade 24 hours, we need 24-hour inspection and enforcement. These TSIs are the boots on the ground,” Prof. Dodoo noted.

The new inspectors, who will be deployed nationwide, are mandated to enforce the Ghana Standards Authority Act 2022 (Act 1078). Their duties include verifying the accuracy of fuel pumps, market scales, electricity meters, inspecting goods at ports and calibrating hospital equipment.

Their presence will bolster the rollout of the President’s 24-hour economy strategy—ensuring safety, fairness and confidence in the domestic trade and industry landscape.

Highlighting the urgent need to replace non-standard measurements like the “olonka” and “grawa” with certified systems, the minister said: “This is about protecting farmers and traders. We are institutionalising fairness”.

The enhanced TSI operation—aimed at building a strong, export-ready, standards-based economy—is expected to be officially launched by President John Mahama himself at the end of this month, a move widely seen as underscoring the administration’s commitment to transforming the trade environment.

The GSA currently has 200 trained Trade and Standards Inspectors (TSIs), but estimates that a minimum of 2,000 are required to fully operationalise inspections across all 261 districts.

The Authority has also expanded its laboratory and certification infrastructure nationwide, positioning itself to support the 24-hour economy with cutting-edge tools.

“This training is not just a technical exercise—it is a nation-building initiative,” Madam Ofosu-Adjare concluded.

The Boss Made It Clear—Appiah Kubi Drops Shòcking Truth About Captain Smart’s Exit

News Hub Creator2h

Former Angel FM news anchor Appiah Kubi has pulled back the curtain on the circumstances that led to popular broadcaster Captain Smart’s exit from the station. Speaking with De God Son TV, Kubi explained that while Captain Smart’s fearless commentary won him legions of fans, it also drew unwelcome attention from powerful figures whose influence Angel FM could ill afford to alienate.

“His bold critiques of high-profile individuals began to trouble management,” Kubi said. “Pressure came in—from calls, emails, even veiled warnings—that if Angel FM continued to offend certain people, the station’s licenses and advertising contracts could be at risk.” According to Kubi, the station owner personally cautioned Smart that running a media outlet in Ghana required balancing journalistic integrity with commercial realities. “The boss made it clear: upset the wrong people now, and you’ll pay for it later,” he recounted.

Captain Smart’s departure, though it sparked public speculation, now emerges as the outcome of a tense standoff between editorial daring and business sustainability. As Ghana’s media landscape grows ever more competitive and politically sensitive, Kubi’s revelations underscore the tightrope that news organizations must walk to deliver hard-hitting journalism without jeopardizing their own future.

Failure to sack Sammy Gyamfi will undermine Code of Conduct – Elvis Darko

0

Editor of Newscenta Newspaper, Elvis Darko, has warned President John Dramani Mahama that failing to dismiss Sammy Gyamfi from his role as Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board could seriously undermine the credibility of the newly launched Code of Conduct for presidential appointees.

His caution follows the circulation of a viral video showing Sammy Gyamfi handing over an undisclosed sum of money—reportedly in U.S. dollars—to evangelist and former fetish priestess Patricia Asiedua Asiama, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

The video has sparked widespread public outrage, with many questioning the appropriateness of the act given Agradaa’s controversial background and history.

While the exact motive behind the cash handover remains unclear, critics argue that the incident runs counter to the values of integrity, accountability, and transparency—principles that form the foundation of President Mahama’s recently launched Code of Conduct. The code aims to set higher ethical standards for public officials and rebuild trust in government.

In an interview on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, May 12, Elvis Darko described the situation as a critical test for President Mahama’s leadership and the effectiveness of his new code.

“The only thing that can save him is when the president decides that he won’t sack him. But this is where the president is going to be in a tight corner. This is his first test after launching the code of conduct,” Darko stated.

He further warned that inaction on the part of the President could create a dangerous precedent, weakening the enforcement of the code and giving future appointees the impression that violations will go unpunished.

“So if the president also fails to sack Sammy Gyamfi, the question is if subsequent appointees also breach the code, will the president have the honour to sack those people? So now, once the president fails to sack Sammy Gyamfi, it means that he has set a certain precedent that if others should breach the code, he will not sack them,” he added.

Darko also highlighted the potential internal fallout within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) if the code is perceived to be enforced selectively.

“If he sacks others for breaching the code, then there’s going to be internal agitation within the party to say that because Sammy is his favourite, he didn’t sack him, but he sacked others,” he said.

“The president is in a fix. He either sacks Sammy Gyamfi to make sure that any other who breaches the code will also be sacked, or he accepts the apology and retains him, meaning anybody who defaults the code will apologise, and that should suffice,” Darko concluded.

Meanwhile, Sammy Gyamfi issued a statement on Sunday, May 11, in which he apologised for the incident, describing it as a “private act of kindness” that was unintentionally made public.

However, the apology has done little to ease public concern, as many continue to demand accountability.

In response to the controversy, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has summoned Gyamfi for questioning. The presidency is now facing increasing pressure from both the general public and party members to act decisively and uphold the principles laid out in the new code.

Attorney-General urges end to politicisation of Ghanaian businesses

0

The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has called for an end to the politicisation of Ghanaian businesses, emphasising that a neutral and stable economic environment is essential for long-term growth and investor confidence.

Speaking at the 20th Anniversary Thanksgiving Dinner of Hubtel, a leading Ghanaian payment services provider, Dr. Ayine stressed the importance of creating a consistent and business-friendly climate that transcends political transitions.

He noted that regardless of which political party is in power, businesses in Ghana should be empowered to thrive and remain resilient across political cycles.

“I want to say one thing about the fact that we need to depoliticize businesses in this country. That is extremely important. We need to support businesses to grow. There are no NDC businesses and there are no NPP businesses but there are Ghanaian businesses,” he said.

The event, held under the theme “Connecting Businesses to Communities,” celebrated Hubtel’s two-decade journey of innovation and impact in Ghana’s digital and financial services space.

Dr. Ayine also acknowledged the vital role of technology-driven companies like Hubtel in expanding financial inclusion and advancing digital transformation across various sectors of the economy.

Also speaking at the event, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the growth of the digital economy.

“I’m passionate about where we are going in the digital space. President John Mahama’s vision is a Ghana that is digitally inclusive and data driven. We are working to build the digital Ghana, a nation where technology powers every sector,” he assured.

Highlighting the company’s journey and resilience, Hubtel’s Co-founder and CEO, Alex Bram, reflected on the lessons learned throughout the company’s 20-year evolution.

“We learn the hard way, what not to do and how to scale a tech company,” he said.

Founded in 2005, Hubtel began as SMSGH, a business-to-customer communications platform that gained rapid traction through its bulk SMS messaging services. Since then, the company has evolved into one of Ghana’s foremost technology firms, helping businesses connect seamlessly with customers through digital payments, e-commerce, and messaging solutions.

Over the past two decades, Hubtel’s story has been shaped by bold decisions, breakthrough innovations, and a willingness to embrace and learn from failure. Each challenge, according to the company, has served as a stepping stone toward growth and transformation.

Why would the Akufo-Addo government’s national security apparatus support ‘opposition party’ in the 2024 election?

0

Imagine Real Madrid making a huge cash donation to its fiercest rivals, Barcelona, to aid Barca’s transfer activities. Or imagine Barcelona, sending technical and other form of support to Real Madrid, to aid Madrid’s preparation ahead of a crucial El Clasico, to decide the La Liga title.

Such a scenario, to both sets of rival fans, is unfathomable. And in the most unlikely event that any official from either club sanctioned such a strange gesture, it would be deemed sacrilegious and unforgivable!

Well, that’s what appears to have happened right here in Ghana, in our political space in the build up to the crucial 2024 Elections.

According to former Director General of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu Boahene, the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government, through its security apparatus, supported an NPP’s rival (opposition) in the election, with a mindboggling financial support of GH¢8.3 million!

Yes you read right; the NPP Government, according to the former intelligence chief, made a whopping financial assistance of GH¢8.3m to its opponent to aid their elections operations.

Interesting, isn’t it? Well, to some people, it is scandalous and a betrayal of unimaginable proportion, for the security apparatus of a sitting government, to extend such a support to a political rival seeking to axe the government and the NPP from office.

It is, therefore, unsurprising, and understandable that a number of NPP party stalwarts are seething with rage, following the revelation by Kwabena Adu-Boahene, in his explosive letter, which also alleged another gleeful presentation of brand new vehicles to the then President-elect, at a time the President-elect himself had told the whole world that government’s coffers were empty to the bone!

A number of high-ranking NPP members I am very close to, have expressed their disgust over what they rightly deem a complete betrayal by its own government and officials, against the NPP party and its Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

“Why did our own government’s National Security apparatus support the opponent in the 2024 election? This revelation is shocking and I am very sad our own government, our own people did this against our party,” one leading national executive member of the party asked me, as though rhetorical.

The angry national executive official believes the government’s national security apparatus could not have made such a huge payment to the opposition without official authorisation from the apex of the then government.

This assertion is true, and I completely side with it. There was no way one person, in this case Adu Boahene alone, from the national security apparatus, could have made such a treacherous payment to a party’s rival without the blessings and support of the very top.

Adu Boahene’s claims, which have so far not been denied by key elements in the erstwhile government’s security chiefs, including Security Minister and National Security Coordinator, is a complete betrayal and a painful stab in the back of the NPP party, its Presidential and Parliamentary candidates.

Concerned NPP members, and indeed Ghanaians, would be right to question the motives of those who planned and executed such a huge payment by the Akufo-Addo government to its political rival?

Since the shocking disclosure by Adu Boahene, I have been imagining what really was the motive of those who did this to betray their own party in a crucial election.

Those who ordered the payment and those who executed it, surely would have done so for two reasons; to sabotage the candidature of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as is being speculated, or an attempt to buy their own security should the opposition party win, a fantasy which seems to have backfired, necessitating a straw-clutching disclosure by Adu Boahene.

Well, if you thought it’s unfathomable for a political party in government to extend huge financial support to its rival ahead of a crucial election, to aid their preparations, you should know that the Akufo-Addo government, through its national security apparatus, stabbed its own party, the NPP in the back.

The lingering question is: Why did the Akufo-Addo government’s national security apparatus support the NPP’s rival in the 2024 election?

This is a question true and concerned members of the NPP, including the party’s 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Candidates, will justifiably continue to ask themselves and for which the collaborators must provide answers.

My husband cheated on me and contracted HIV, now I’m also positive

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

Dear GhanaWeb,

I got married last year. Before marriage, I was HIV negative and so was my husband. Just somewhere in December, my husband started seeing a young lady of about twenty-four years. He has saved her contact as Karen so I presumed that’s her name.

I cautioned him about the sort of messages he is exchanging with the lady but he got angry saying, I am reading meanings into the whole thing. He said the girl is a distant relative he met at one of his aunties wedding in December and a whole lot so I tolerated it.

Early February, I figured my husband was having an affair with the lady. I became so angry that I had to involve his mom. After a long disagreement and misunderstanding between us, he said he was letting go of the lady which I believed he did.

Around March, I realized I was pregnant so I visited the hospital and it was confirmed that I was three weeks pregnant. Just this past Monday I went to have some tests and guess what, I was confirmed HIV positive. I doubted the results so I visited another hospital and it showed the same results.

I called my husband to come have his own test that instant and , he has it. That was when I started weeping and begging him to tell me the truth because just before we got married in November last year, we were both negative. We went to check together. We even knew we will be negative so we didn’t panic.

My husband confessed to me that very moment that it could be the girl because they had an encounter on a few occasions plus, he didn’t use condoms but pulled out instead. He said she was the only lady he had been with since we got married.

Anyway, the girl has told him the truth that she already knew she was HIV positive that’s why she insisted he used a condom but he refused. I have left the marriage. I am done with him. His family is on my neck as if I did something wrong.

I’ve been depressed ever since and thinking of what to do with my life since HIV is not curable yet. I’m scared to discuss this with my parents or friends. I don’t want to be a laughing stock to my friends because everyone around me believed I had a perfect marriage.

His mother said we’re a couple and I vowed to stay with him through thick and thin so I should reconsider my decisions. Will going back to him undo the harm? Will it fix my life?

Just five months of marriage and you ruin my entire life. I will just poison him if they dare convince me to go back. I regret everything and I’m so much pain. Will I be judged as a bad wife? What should I do with my life now?

Sammy Gyamfi, Agradaa, dollars take over social media trends

0

Sammy Gyamfi (L) and Patricia Oduro Koranteng (R) Sammy Gyamfi (L) and Patricia Oduro Koranteng (R)

Social media platforms, particularly X and Facebook, have been abuzz with discussions involving the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi; Nana Agradaa, and dollars, following the circulation of a viral video purportedly showing Gyamfi handing an undisclosed sum of US currency to Patricia Oduro Koranteng, widely known as Nana Agradaa, a former fetish priestess who now identifies as an evangelist.

Critics on these platforms have subjected the politician to intense scrutiny and backlash, condemning the act as a public display of opulence unbecoming of a government appointee, particularly given that the administration has been in office for only four months and in light of the recently launched code of conduct by President John Dramani Mahama, which urges appointees to uphold behavior that safeguards the integrity of the government.

The incident has sparked a divide in public opinions, with some netizens expressing support for Sammy Gyamfi’s actions, while others insist that no excuses should be made for the politician, emphasising the need to hold public officials accountable irrespective of their affiliations or motives.

Supporters of Sammy Gyamfi have pointed to his expression of remorse and public apology, viewing it as a commendable gesture of accountability. They argue that his willingness to acknowledge fault contrasts with the common tendency among politicians to justify their actions, and as such, they stand in solidarity with him while urging the public to halt further criticisms.

On the other hand, critics who are not impressed with the apology have called for sanctions to be imposed on Gyamfi as a means of setting a precedent and sending a strong message to other government appointees to refrain from actions that could tarnish the administration’s integrity and erode public goodwill.

They argue that holding Gyamfi accountable will serve as a litmus test for the government’s commitment to fighting corruption, an issue it strongly emphasised during its campaign.

More Leaked Atopa Videos Deepen Viral Scandal Around Kumasi’s Queen

More Leaked “Atopa” Videos Deepen Viral Scandal Around Kumasi’s “Queen”

The ongoing controversy surrounding a young woman popularly known as “Queen” from Kumasi has taken a dramatic new twist, as more explicit videos allegedly featuring her have surfaced online. The leak has reignited widespread attention and debate on social media, with netizens weighing in on what has become one of the most talked-about scandals in recent weeks.

Queen first went viral after an initial video made rounds online, sparking outrage, curiosity, and speculation regarding her identity. While many rushed to draw conclusions, her family quickly issued a public statement asserting that the individual in the footage merely bears a resemblance to her and is not, in fact, Queen.

In a video response, Queen—visibly emotional—denied any involvement in the videos. She stated firmly that she had no knowledge of how the recordings were made or who was responsible for sharing them. Her denial, however, has not fully quelled the controversy.

The public remains sharply divided. While a segment of social media users has shown compassion, calling for her privacy to be respected and emphasizing the psychological toll such scandals can have, others remain unconvinced. Critics have pointed out inconsistencies in her statements and continue to question her narrative.

The emergence of additional leaked clips has only intensified scrutiny, with online platforms buzzing with commentary, memes, and reactions. The emotional toll on Queen appears to be growing, as public curiosity shows no sign of slowing down.

Meanwhile, advocacy groups and concerned individuals are calling for restraint and empathy from the public. Many are urging authorities to investigate the origins of the leaks, emphasizing the need for accountability, especially if the videos were shared without consent—a serious breach of digital privacy and personal rights.

As the story continues to develop, one thing remains clear: the case of Kumasi’s “Queen” highlights the deep societal impact of viral content and the urgent need for stricter measures to combat online harassment and invasion of privacy.

0

Declare source of dollar gift to Agradaa – Ibrahim Adjei to Sammy Gyamfi

0

Ibrahim Adjei, former Assistant Secretary at the Office of former President Akufo-Addo, has called for an urgent investigation into the source of money handed to evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiama by Sammy Gyamfi, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board.

The controversy stems from widely circulated footage showing Gyamfi giving an undisclosed amount—reportedly in U.S. dollars—to Patricia Asiedua Asiama, also known as Nana Agradaa, a former fetish priestess turned evangelist.

The incident has sparked public outrage, particularly as it comes in the wake of President John Mahama’s recently launched Code of Conduct for Public Officials.

While the exact context of the transaction remains unclear, critics have raised concerns about transparency and the appropriateness of such a gesture by a public official.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, May 12, Ibrahim Adjei questioned not only the act itself but also the financial means behind it.

“What needs to be done is an investigation into the money that he was sharing. Can you imagine how many dollars Sammy Gyamfi is sharing when the public or cameras are not in sight? We are paying a lot of attention to what we saw. Let us find out where this generosity is coming from,” Adjei stated.

He further cited Gyamfi’s own previous comments on money laundering as a standard for accountability.

“Sammy Gyamfi on TV3 said that if you are caught in possession of money that you cannot account for, that is not commensurate with your salary or income, then, in all intents and purposes, you are engaged in money laundering. At the end, you shall account for it,” Adjei recalled.

Calling for immediate clarity, he insisted that Gyamfi should publicly explain the source of the funds even before a formal investigation begins.

“Sammy Gyamfi, before the investigation that should happen, needs to tell us where that money is coming from, what your salary is, what land you sold and others, and the answers that he gives need to be looked at. So that is where the investigation needs to happen, so we can understand him. He must also give reasons for this generosity.

“There should be an investigation, and explain to us where the money is coming from and the source of the money,” he added.

Although Sammy Gyamfi issued an apology on Sunday, May 11, describing the act as a personal gesture of kindness that inadvertently became public, calls for greater transparency and accountability continue to grow.

Power supply to stabilise by end of May – Energy Minister

0

Energy Minister John Jinapor has assured Ghanaians that the ongoing challenges in the country’s power sector will be stabilised by the end of May, as major maintenance works continue at several power plants nationwide.

His comments come in response to growing public concern over the recent intermittent power outages, popularly referred to as “dumsor.”

In an interview with TV3, Jinapor emphasized that the current maintenance schedule is crucial to ensuring long-term stability in electricity generation.

“What I get is that within the month of May, there will be major maintenance, and in June, there will be minimal maintenance. So, barring any unforeseen circumstances, we should be seeing a stable power supply, but we should be servicing these plants,” he stated.

He explained that many of Ghana’s power plants have surpassed their recommended operating hours and are in urgent need of servicing.

“These are plants that have gone far beyond their maximum operating hours. So, as a responsible government, we have to undertake the servicing.

“What I have realised is that if you hold them back for too long, you will compromise the integrity of the plant. So I want to appeal to Ghanaians that as we take this step, we will do everything within our power to reduce the impact, it is a necessary step,” he added.

The brief but vibrant ceremony took place on Friday, May 9, 2025, at the forecourt of the Chief’s Palace. In attendance were the community chief, representatives of women’s and youth groups, unit committee members, and other guests.

In his keynote address, Mr. Badu Samuel Dwumor, District Manager of the Forestry Services Division in Sissala East, officially handed over the facility on behalf of the Gbele Park Manager, Dr. Polycarp Maabir. He explained that the Gbele Resource Reserve, in partnership with the Savannah Fruits Company, began implementing an organic shea value chain development project as far back as 2014.

According to Mr. Dwumor, the project, part of an alternative livelihood initiative, aims to empower women in beneficiary communities organized into groups known as Organic Shea Collectors. To support their work, the Reserve has been constructing storage facilities to strengthen the value chain.

Under the Sustainable Land and Water Management Project, four storage facilities were initially constructed. Mr. Dwumor noted that four more are being added under the Ghana Landscape Restoration and Small-Scale Mining Project (GLRSSMP). Two were completed in 2024 at Gbele and Timmie in the Sissala West District, making the newly completed Dimajang facility the third.

In his concluding remarks, he urged the community to maintain the facility regularly and advised that any revenue generated from renting the facility should be reinvested in its upkeep.

Speaking on behalf of the community, Madam Musah Ayishetu, leader of the women’s group supported by the Savannah Fruits Company, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the facility. She pledged the community’s commitment to maintaining it for long-term sustainability.

The ceremony concluded with a symbolic inspection of the facility by all present, marking the official handover.

My husband cheated on me and contracted HIV from the lady he cheated with, now I’m also HIV positive

Mahama allowing NDC ‘hawks’ to lead him to the path of disgrace

John Boadu [L] and Joh Mahama John Boadu [L] and Joh Mahama

The former General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of allowing the ‘hawks’ in his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to lead him down a path of disgrace.

According to the experienced politician, the president’s decision to proceed with the controversial process of removing Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo from office is based on the advice of these party hardliners.

Speaking in an interview with Asaasepa Radio, which was shared on social media, John Boadu urged President Mahama to instead listen to the ‘doves’ or moderates within the NDC, who are against the unjustifiable removal of Justice Torkonoo, who is currently on suspension.

“I don’t think that John Mahama, considering what he has done over the years, should allow the ‘hawks’ in the NDC to disgrace him. He is the first president under the Fourth Republic to initiate the removal of a Chief Justice who is also a woman. We are telling the NDC that after removing the Chief Justice, they might as well remove the EC Chairperson too. Asiedu Nketiah has publicly stated that he does not understand why the EC Chairperson is still in office. This sets a bad precedent.”

John Boadu warned that if the NDC’s actions are not stopped immediately, future NPP governments might adopt the same approach.

“Whichever government comes to power should appoint its members, and when it is exiting, all those appointees should leave their respective offices. We need to understand this. I know the DNA of the NDC — when they lose an election and one of their members is removed from public office by a new government, they complain and organize demonstrations. That shouldn’t be the case. We must accept that anyone appointed by a government is expected to support that administration, and when it leaves office, the appointee should also go.

“Nobody needs to tell you — once your appointing government is out, you’re also out. John Mahama, who appointed you, is no longer in power, so you should join him at home. Let’s adopt this style and see if it benefits the nation. If we implement this system, perhaps CSOs will later step in to mediate, but by then, we would have practiced this approach for twelve to sixteen years — and only then will we truly reflect and make informed decisions.”

Gov’t misses target by GHS169m as yields dip

Latest figures from the Bank of Ghana show that the government missed its Treasury bill issuance target by GHS169 million.

According to the Central Bank’s published results, the government aimed to raise GHS 5.38 billion but received bids totaling GHS 5.21 billion.

Despite the shortfall, all bids were fully accepted across all tenors, signaling strong investor demand and the Treasury’s willingness to absorb the full auction amount.

For the 91-day bill, GHS 3.85 billion was fully accepted. Similarly, GHS747 million in bids for the 182-day bill and GHS611 million for the 364-day bill were entirely allocated.

For market watchers, government’s decision to fully accept all bids tendered could signal strong appetite for money demand from the treasury or government.

Interest rates continue to decline, averaging between 15% and 16%, reflecting the BoG’s monetary policy stance aimed at stabilizing inflation and moderating the cost of borrowing.

The 91-day yield dropped by 7 basis points to 15.16%, down from 15.23% the previous week.

The 182-day rate also fell by 7 basis points to 15.70%, while the 364-day yield declined by 15 basis points to 16.80%.

Looking ahead, the government plans to raise GHS 6.68 billion in the next auction.

‘Stop rewriting history’ – Music producer counters Akon’s Afrobeats origin story

Senegalese-American singer, Akon Senegalese-American singer, Akon

Veteran Nigerian music producer and executive, ID Cabasa, has debunked claims by Akon that he played a key role in the creation of Afrobeats.

In a recent interview with Wazobia FM, ID Cabasa didn’t hold back as he addressed Akon’s comments, which have stirred mixed reactions among music lovers.

The “Lonely” hitmaker had claimed that his early collaborations with Nigerian artistes such as Wizkid, 2Baba (2Face), Timaya, and 9ice were foundational in birthing Afrobeats as a global genre.

But according to Cabasa, Akon’s version of the story doesn’t match the reality on ground.

“Akon for also tok say na he still discovered the likes of 2Face, Timaya, 9ice and Co. Na the people wey he roll with when he come Nigeria, wey tell am say, ‘I’m the biggest person around this place.’ So, he properly feels he pioneered business and branding sides of Afrobeats,” he said.

He further clarified that Akon’s narrative about Wizkid’s origin was inaccurate.

“Even the way wey he take dey tok about Wizkid, no be wettin the story be be that. We all know say na Banky W dem sign Wizkid. Yes, we collaborate with Akon in terms of distribution but e no mean say he go tok say na he create Afrobeats,” he added.

For ID Cabasa, Afrobeats is not the product of one man’s effort, but a cultural expression that evolved organically through collective input.

“Because Afrobeats no be wettin wey one person create, na culture,” he said.

While acknowledging Akon’s contributions—especially during the late 2000s and early 2010s, Cabasa insisted that those moments, though significant, were not enough to give Akon rights over the genre.

‘Where did you get the dollars? You never shared it while in opposition’

Prophet Ebenezer Adarkwa Yiadom [L] and Sammy Gyamfi Prophet Ebenezer Adarkwa Yiadom [L] and Sammy Gyamfi

The Founder of the Ebenezer Miracle Worship Centre, Prophet Ebenezer Adarkwa Yiadom, popularly known as Opambour, has criticised the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, for publicly gifting U.S. dollars to fetish priestess-turned-evangelist, Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

Sammy Gyamfi has made headlines after gifting an undisclosed amount of U.S. dollars to Nana Agradaa.

In a video shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Gyamfi is seen standing beside his white Range Rover, taking a photo with Nana Agradaa, who has her arm around him. The two are seen having a brief conversation.

Agradaa is then heard making a comment to Gyamfi, prompting him to open the back door of the vehicle and sit down to count several U.S. dollar notes. As he does so, Agradaa insists that he hand over all the notes instead of selecting a few. She proceeds to grab all the money from his hands and, walking away, flaunts the dollar bills to bystanders, declaring, “I have taken dollars from Sammy Gyamfi.”

Moments later, Gyamfi’s white Range Rover is seen speeding off.

Sammy Gyamfi has come under a barrage of criticism after the video surfaced online, forcing him to issue a public apology.

Commenting on the issue, Prophet One questioned why Sammy Gyamfi could only afford to share U.S. dollars after receiving a government appointment from President Mahama.

“You have never shared dollars—today, where did you get the dollars from? People may think that you have also started embezzling state funds. Meanwhile, it could be a gift from someone. But how many people will know that it is your own money?

“If you are sharing dollars now that you have a government appointment, it will be assumed that you have stolen state funds. Sammy Gyamfi has to be very careful. I am not even worried about the car he drove to the event; I am more concerned about the money. He should not repeat that mistake again. People want to occupy that office, and he should know that he is not the only person who deserves to be there.”

Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah

Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff, has summoned Sammy Gyamfi, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, after a video went viral allegedly showing him giving an undisclosed amount of U.S. dollars to Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, a former fetish priestess turned evangelist.

According to a report by citifmonline.com, Gyamfi has been called to explain the circumstances surrounding the transaction, which has sparked widespread public criticism and raised concerns about the ethical conduct of public officials.

The video, which has been widely shared on social media, appears to show Gyamfi in a private meeting with Nana Agradaa. Although the purpose and details of the cash handover remain unclear, the sight of a high-ranking public official providing funds to a controversial religious figure has fueled public suspicion and backlash.

Critics have accused Gyamfi of violating President John Dramani Mahama’s recently introduced Code of Conduct for Public Officials, which was part of broader efforts to fight corruption and restore public trust in government institutions.

In response, Sammy Gyamfi issued a statement on Sunday, May 11, expressing regret over the incident. He described the gesture as a private act of compassion that, unfortunately, became public.

Nonetheless, due to the political sensitivity and potential reputational damage, the Chief of Staff is said to be addressing the matter with urgency.
