We’re ready to complete Ablekuma North parliamentary results collation

0

Fred Tetteh, Deputy Director of Research at the Electoral Commission (EC), has confirmed that the Commission is set to complete the collation of parliamentary results for Ablekuma North.

This follows the suspension of the process due to security concerns. Following a High Court order on 4th January 2025, the EC was instructed to continue the collation of results and declare the winners of four outstanding parliamentary elections.

The collation for Ablekuma North, the only remaining constituency, began on 8th January 2025 but was halted due to incomplete results from three polling stations. The EC had scheduled the continuation of the collation for 17th January 2025 at 8:00 am.

However, based on intelligence reports, the Ghana Police Service advised postponing the exercise. Despite this, the EC, in a statement issued on Friday, January 17, noted that the police had not enhanced security at the collation centers, leading to the invasion by party supporters.

Speaking in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Thursday, Tetteh stated that “In terms of the status as at now, the commission is ready to go ahead to complete the three polling stations that are left to be added for the final declaration to be made.”

To ensure the smooth completion of the collation, he said the EC has taken proactive measures.

“What we have done because it is our constitutional mandate to have this thing completed is that we’ve written to the police to provide security for us because we don’t want what happened on the 17th January to reoccur.

“We are just waiting for the police to provide us security, then we can go ahead with those three polling stations. The results are ready for us to just add up and declare the winner,” Tetteh explained.

However he denied knowledge of the matter being in court as indicated by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Two men whose alleged fraudulent activities resulted in the loss of GH¢160,000 belonging to Alfa Lotto Company, have appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Richard Osei, a supervisor of Alfa Lotto and Wisdom Korkortsi, a phone repairer, have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit crime, forgery of other documents and stealing,

The Court presided over by Mrs Susan Eduful has admitted the accused persons to bail.

Osei took a blank booklet and wrote the winning numbers on them to the tune of

GH¢160,000.00.

Korkortsi, who was the custodian of the closed booklets, waiting to be delivered to the head office, handed over the bag or sack locked with padlock containing the closed booklets/tickets to Osei.

The Accra Circuit Court One has granted a GH¢150,000.00 bail with three sureties to a businessman over an alleged GH¢134,000.00 worth of tyres fraud.

The Court ordered that two of Nicholas Adams’ sureties should be justified.

Adams, the accused person, allegedly took GH¢134,000.00 from Mr Christopher Tetteh under the pretext of importing for him a 40 feet container of tyres.

Ghana’s World Champion Abigail Quartey reveals ‘four-hour’ training behind title win

0

Ghana’s first female boxing champion, Abigail Quartey, has opened up about the hard work behind her Women’s International Boxing Federation (WIBF) title success, which involved four hours of daily training.

The 28-year-old eased past British opponent Sangeeta Birdi with a barrage of punches and uppercuts to become the nation’s first female world title holder and the 11th overall in Ghana’s history.

Speaking to JoySports’ Haruna Mubarak in a documentary titled “Abigail Quartey: Her Gloves, Her Glory”, she revealed how she sacrificed personal pleasures and dedicated hours in the gym to embrace the grueling demands of the sport.

JoySports’ Mubarak Haruna brings you the inspiring story of Abigail Quartey, the trailblazer who broke barriers to become Ghana’s first female World Champion.

“Before I start training, I go jogging in the morning for about an hour and a half,” Abigail said.

“After that, I come home, freshen up, and rest for a while. Then, I head to the gym for about two and a half hours. Training before fights is crucial for me because I can’t fight effectively if I don’t prepare.

“Boxing is such a demanding sport that even completing a single round takes a lot out of you. I was determined to win the title, so I made sacrifices.

“I rarely went out. As soon as I finished training, I would eat something and go straight to bed.”

In a sport that often overlooked women, Abigail has punched her way into history, proving that the ring has no gender.

She has an impressive record of nine wins in ten professional bouts and now ranked first in Ghana and 51st globally in her division.

The focus now shifts to how Abigail can successfully defend her title and cement her legacy. However, no opponent has been confirmed yet.

‘I don’t know what he sniffs, but it’s not pleasant!’ – Nana Aba Anamoah blasts Annoh-Dompreh over ‘help NPP fight NDC’ comment

Renowned broadcast journalist Nana Aba Anamoah has lambasted the Member of Parliament for Nsawam/Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, over a comment he made to sympathizers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

On February 6, 2025, Annoh-Dompreh warned that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would face unrest in Parliament if they prevented the Electoral Commission (EC) from re-collating the results of the December 2024 Ablekuma North parliamentary election.

“If you are a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and you come across a fellow party member fighting with a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), step in and help your fellow party member,” he stated.

Responding to the development in a social media post on February 6, 2025, Nana Aba Anamoah shared a flyer of Annoh-Dompreh inciting NPP members against the NDC in case of any violence and questioned the Minority Chief Whip’s sense of reasoning.

In her post, she said, “I don’t know what he sniffs, but it’s not pleasant!”

Meanwhile, tensions remain high in the constituency as both NPP’s Akua Afriyieh and NDC’s Ewurabena Aubyn have erected billboards declaring victory, despite the EC not yet announcing the final results.

The re-collation process has been delayed due to frequent disputes and chaos, leading to rising tensions and uncertainty.

Ablekuma North remains the only constituency from the December 7 parliamentary election without a declared winner.

The EC is yet to announce new date for the re-collation of results in the constituency.

GREL’s factory on verge of shutdown over illegal mining activities

0

Ghana Rubber Estates Limited (GREL) faces one of its factories’ potential shutdown due to severe encroachment on its plantation by illegal mining activities.

“We are unable to access parts of the plantation. Once the land is taken over the trees are destroyed, leading to a loss in production,” said Perry Acheampong, Corporate Affairs Manager-GREL.

Mr. Acheampong disclosed this to the B&FT and lamented that illegal mining activities are threatening the company’s operations and sustainability.

GREL, the largest processor, operates two factories in the Western Region with a combined capacity of 20 tonnes per hour.

Other processing factories include NARUBIZ Ltd. (1 tonne per hour), Rubber Plantations Ghana Ltd. (RPGL) (0.8 tonnes per hour) and APEX Rubber Processing (1 tonne per hour).

He added that the company is facing a water crisis as all nearby water sources have been polluted by illegal mining activities.

“We use a lot of water at the factory but illegal mining has polluted our water sources, making it unusable for operations. At one point, we had to temporarily shut down the factory due to this issue. If it persists, we may be forced to close one of our factories, which employs 600 direct staff,” said Mr. Acheampong.

However, he said: “We are collaborating with security agencies to find the best ways to protect our concession,” – emphasising the urgent need for stakeholders in the sector to develop new strategies for addressing the issue and prevent the factory from collapsing.

GREL is one of the country’s largest agribusinesses, playing a crucial role in job creation and economic growth.

Currently the company has 13,093 hectares of land planted with rubber. A total of 9,555 hectares are under tapping.

In 2022, exports of Technically Specified Rubber – processed natural rubber graded for industrial use – and natural rubber sheets generated approximately US$131.3million, according to data from the Ghana Export Promotion Authority.

The state holds a 26.75 percent stake in GREL’s operations and, in addition to statutory payments, the company also pays dividends.

Ghana international, Denis Odoi Ghana international, Denis Odoi

Ghana international, Denis Odoi had an eventful night on Thursday, February 6, 2025, during Royal Antwerp’s hard-fought 2-2 draw against RSC Anderlecht in the Belgian Cup.

The veteran full-back started for his team in a crucial second-leg meeting with the Belgian giants in their semi-final tie.

Trailing by a goal to nil from the first leg, Royal Antwerp had to fight for a way back right from the start of the first half.

After a spirited performance, the hosts took the lead in the 26th minute thanks to an equaliser from Ghana’s Denis Odoi after he was assisted by Tjarron Chery.

Unfortunately, for Royal Antwerp, the team could not hold onto the lead for long, with RSC Anderlecht equalising in the 32nd minute through a strike from Yari Verschaeren.

To make matters worse, Royal Antwerp was reduced to 10 men before the break when Ghana’s Denis Odoi received a second yellow card.

With the numerical disadvantage, Royal Antwerp pulled their weight and managed to net a second goal in the 86th minute when Gyrano Kerk found the net.

However, a determined Anderlecht side with all 11 players on the pitch scored late in the game to make it 2-2, ensuring that the side cruised to the final of this season’s Belgian Cup.

GHS must be summoned over CSM outbreak

0

The Minority in Parliament is demanding that the management of the Ghana Health Service  (GHS) be summoned over the recurring outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis in the country.

This follows a statement by the Member of Parliament for Daffiama Bussie Issa, Dr. Sebastian Sandaare, on the floor of Parliament, revealing that 14 deaths have been recorded out of 60 suspected cases in the Upper West Region in 2025.

Reacting to the statement, Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh stated that such preventable ailments should not result in loss of lives, emphasizing the need for the Ghana Health Service to brief Parliament on measures to contain the outbreak.

“The leadership of the Ghana Health Service should come and tell us why this matter is where it is. In this time and age, we can’t allow such basic aliments to take lives. Interestingly, the Upper East shares a border with the Upper West. And if we’re not careful, it will result in a calamity.

“This is an ailment that is taking the lives of people, innocent Ghanaians. And that part of the world, statistics have shown that poverty is so pronounced so they may not even have the wherewithal to procure the vaccines.”

The First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, however, outlined some recommendations for the Ghana Health Service to implement to mitigate the spread of the disease.

“The Ministry of Health should take immediate action to create awareness, conduct contact tracing, intensify provision of medical care to the affected victims and consider the establishment of the public health emergency fund.”

Sustain economic gains, don’t play politics – Dr Amin Adam to Mahama

0

The immediate past Finance Minister is expectant that President John Mahama’s administration will sustain the economic gains achieved in recent years rather than engage in political manoeuvring.

Dr Mohammed Amin Adam speaking on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition on Wednesday, stressed the significant recovery the Ghanaian economy had witnessed and warned against reversing progress for political reasons.

“I do not disagree that the economy was the major issue on the ballot because we all knew that the economy was difficult,” he admitted.

“But as I explained, it wasn’t only the Ghanaian economy. Most incumbents across the world who went through elections around the same time lost, so it wasn’t peculiar to Ghana. The economy really dominated the political debate.”

The former minister defended the previous administration’s handling of the economic downturn, stressing that external factors were largely responsible for the crisis, not domestic mismanagement.

He pointed out that many countries faced similar challenges but commended Ghana’s resilience in bouncing back quickly.

“If you look at the data from 2022 to 2023 and then 2024, you will see that the turnaround was quick. The recovery was faster than even anticipated by the World Bank, IMF, and many economic analysts, even in Ghana,” he explained.

“We were of the view that once the economy had turned around, the recovery was swift. Conditions were improving. We were getting stability—macro stability—which is a condition for economic growth.”

Dr Amin Adam further highlighted Ghana’s ability to maintain positive growth despite undergoing debt restructuring, which typically leads to economic contractions.

“Even after doing a debt restructuring—where countries that have done restructuring usually record negative growth—we were recording an average of about 6.4% last year,” he stated.

“It just shows that the economy was turning to positive levels, which, when sustained, could really reduce the suffering and economic hardship faced by the people.”

He acknowledged that the electorate opted for change in the last election but stated that the incoming government must build on the economic foundation laid by its predecessors rather than dismantle it for political reasons.

“The Ghanaian people decided that they wanted a change, and this is why I expect the new government to sustain the gains that we have made so that they translate into tangible benefits for the people,” he said.

“But if you come in to do politics as usual, you lose the point, and you are not really able to sustain those gains. And this is what I’ve seen President Mahama doing.”

Western Region will be prioritised in national development agenda

0

President John Dramani Mahama has assured the chiefs and people of the Western Region of his desire to prioritise the region in his government’s development agenda for the country.

He said the region had long been the bedrock of Ghana’s economy through its rich mineral wealth like gold, cocoa, rubber, oil and timber, and contributed immensely to the country’s growth.

“… And yet for far too long, it has not received its fair share of development, and this must change.

“I am here today to assure you that under my leadership as President of the Republic of Ghana, the Western Region will take its rightful place as a priority in Ghana’s development agenda.”

President Mahama gave the assurance during a durbar of chiefs and people of the Western Region, at Sekondi, to thank them for their overwhelming support given him in the 2024 general election.

The president said the great wealth of the region must translate into better roads, quality healthcare systems, improved education, job opportunities, and a better standard of living for the people.

He said: “Today, I stand before you not just as your President, but as a son of this great land of ours, Ghana, and as a leader who believes in the potential of our people, and as a servant who is ready to work tirelessly to ensure that the Western Region and Ghana as a whole move forward into a future of prosperity, dignity and progress.”

He continued: “We stand at the dawn of a new era, and Ghana is ready for a fresh start, and the Western Region is going to be at the forefront of this transformation.”

President Mahama, thus, called on the citizenry to support the government to rebuild the country and bring prosperity to all.

“We will move forward together with hope unity and determination, and the Western Region is the heartbeat of Ghana’s progress.

“Let us, therefore, rise together and build a future that is prosperous, that is just, fair and filled with opportunities for us all,” he stated.

On some of his plans for the region, President Mahama said the government would revamp and expand the cocoa sector in Western Region to support cocoa processing companies like WAMCO and other entities under the 24-hour Economy policy.

He noted that steps would also be taken to revive the oil and gas exploration and production, while completing all abandoned projects in the region.

“We will deliver on our promises, and I am hopeful that you will see tangible life-changing developments across the region soon, as part of my efforts to rebuild and reset our country,” President Mahama added.

The meeting, he explained, aims to promote an agenda for local entrepreneurs to participate in the refinery’s restructuring exercise and investment efforts.

“Our refinery is also a key integral part of what we intend to do. Our vision is that if we can get you Ghanaian entrepreneurs to lead the process, it will help us a lot.

“We will take a second look at Tema Oil Refinery. But in line with our local content policy, we will want to give the first option to you captains of industry in Ghana here. Where you do not have capacity, I am confident that you can source for capacity to augment what you do with it,” the minister said in a meeting with captains of industry.

Black Stars must win games to recapture the support of Ghanaians – Henry Asante Twum

0

Communications Director of Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum has charged the playing body of the Black Stars to win games to recapture the love of Ghanaians.

His remarks follow after the senior national team failed to record a single win during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The Black Stars suffered three defeats and recorded three draws after six games and finished at the bottom of Group F.

The decision led the masses to call for the sacking of Otto Addo, who had been retained as the head coach of the team.

With the 2026 World Cup qualifiers set to resume in March later this year, Asante Twum has tasked the playing body of the Black Stars to win games to get the support and love from Ghanaians.

“We have to start on a clean slate and in March, we have two games, and we must prepare for that and go for the win,” he told Sporty FM.

“At this moment, the only thing the Black Stars can do is to win games to have the love of Ghanaians back,” he added.

The Black Stars, who sit 2nd in Group I with nine points will take on Chad and Madagascar in the Matchday five and six games.

I’ll refer ORAL findings to investigative agencies

0

President John Dramani Mahama has confirmed that findings from the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Committee will be forwarded to relevant investigative agencies to probe individuals suspected of misappropriating state resources.

He disclosed that the committee is set to present its report next week.

Speaking during his ‘Thank You’ tour of the Central Region on Thursday, February 6, Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling corruption, both within his government and in the previous administration.

He assured Ghanaians that his government will serve the interests of all citizens, not just a privileged few, emphasizing that accountability remains a cornerstone of his leadership.

“Next week, the ORAL committee that I set up is going to present its report to me. And I will refer it to the investigative organisations to start their investigations against people who have misappropriated the resources of this nation,” he stated.

Mahama further reiterated plans to introduce a robust accountability framework and a code of conduct for individuals in positions of trust. He stressed that his administration will hold both former and current officials to the same high ethical standards.

“Even as we investigate those who have just left office, and we carry out our Operation Recover All Loot, those who are current office bearers should also know that they will be held to the same standard as we are holding the past regime,” he asserted.

Mahama’s remarks reinforce his stance on good governance and his pledge to strengthen institutional oversight in the fight against corruption.

Two jailed 16 months for stealing

0

Two friends, who stole gold-bearing stones valued at GH¢15,000 from a grinding machine shop in Kaniankor Top, a suburb of Nsuaem, have been sentenced to a total of 16 months’ imprisonment in hard labour by the Tarkwa District Court One.

Ibrahim Asante and his accomplice, Kwame Ntiamoah, both galamsey operators, would each serve eight months imprisonment.

They pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit a crime and stealing.

Inspector of Police Patrick Essien, Prosecuting, told the court presided over by Charles Owusu Nsiah that the complainant, Francis Ankomah, owns a grinding machine shop in Kaniankor Top, and resided in the same community with the convicts.

He said Asante worked for the complainant in his grinding machine shop for a fee for a couple of months.

The prosecution said on Wednesday, January 1, this year, the complainant gave Asante an amount of GH¢320.00 for his upkeep and left for his hometown in Adansi Akrofuom to celebrate the New Year with his family.

Police Inspector Essien said on January 3, 2025, Asante and Ntiamoah entered the complainant’s shop and stole his gold-bearing stones, but after the act, Asante secretly called the complainant on the phone to inform him that Ntiamoah had stolen his gold-bearing stones.

According to the prosecutor, the complainant upon receiving the information returned to Kaniankor Top, arrested Ntiamoah, and handed him over to the Nsuaem police.

He said when Ntiamoah was questioned at the police station, he stated that Asante was the one who invited him over to the complainant’s shop to commit the offence.

The prosecution said Asante was, therefore, picked up and he explained that they had GH¢460.00 each as their booty, paid GH¢200 for processing of the gold-bearing stone, and GH¢200 to two persons, who also assisted them in the processing.

Ntiamoah, however, told the police that he received only GH¢150.00 from his counterpart as his share.

NDC’s actions sparked Annoh-Dompreh’s controversial comment

0

Richard Ahiagbah, Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has linked Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh’s controversial comments regarding the Ablekuma North parliamentary election to the disruptive actions of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters in the constituency.

Annoh-Dompreh had called on NPP supporters in Ablekuma North to stand by their fellow party members in confrontations with members of the NDC.

Addressing a gathering of party supporters during a visit by the NPP caucus leadership to the party’s parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Akua Afriyie, Annoh-Dompreh stated: “If indeed you are a member of the NPP and you go to meet your fellow party member fighting a member of the NDC, join your party member to beat the NDC member.”

The Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP accused the NDC of deliberately obstructing the Electoral Commission (EC) from completing the collation process and warned that the NPP would not tolerate further delays.

In an interview on Channel One Newsroom, Ahiagbah stressed the need for stakeholders, including the government, to address the root causes of the ongoing election issues.

“This whole election in Ablekuma North is a problem, and I think it is one that should preoccupy all of us, including the president of the country, because the EC has called on the government to provide enough security for them to continue, collate, and conclude that election.

“So really, the conversation around the minority chief whip I think should not constitute the matter,” he said.

He highlighted that the disruption caused by NDC supporters has hindered the conclusion of the election.

“The thing is, why haven’t we concluded that election? It’s because the NDC supporters in the constituency are disrupting the process.

“The IGP is not doing what he is supposed to do, as directed by the High Court, to provide security for that election to be concluded. So those, for me, are the key issues,” he explained.

Ahiagbah also referenced an incident on January 17th, where NDC supporters, led by their Greater Accra Regional Organiser, disrupted and vandalized property at the EC regional office.

He argued that this act of violence has been overlooked in the current discussions.

“Why are we not talking about that? That’s the actual violence. That is what is happening. These are the effects of those actions. I don’t think that we should be promoting violence, but we should be solving the problem.

“If tonight we are focused on talking about Hon. Annoh-Dompreh and what he’s said, and forgetting the misbehavior of NDC supporters, that will be doing an injustice to the issue,” Ahiagbah asserted.

He emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes to resolve the problem.

“I think we should focus on that. That is where we can solve the problem. Because if we solve the problem, he won’t hold a mic to say what he is saying.

“That is not to discount it but to say that why don’t we solve the problem,” Ahiagbah stated.

Cross-Dressing in Skits and Movies: It is just for the arts, to play a role

Renowned Ghanaian actor and brand influencer, Mikki Osei Berko Renowned Ghanaian actor and brand influencer, Mikki Osei Berko

Renowned Ghanaian actor and brand influencer, Mikki Osei Berko, famously known as Master Richard, has shared his perspectives on the growing trend of cross-dressing in skits and movies, a topic that has sparked debates within Ghana’s entertainment industry.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb’s Elsie Lamar on Talkertainment, Berko, when asked about his views on cross-dressing in the creative space, cited American filmmaker and actor, Tyler Perry.

According to him, cross-dressing is part of the creative process intended to tell a story for audiences.

“Look at someone like Tyler Perry. He’s been an inspiration to me because of his level of creativity and what he does. That is what I think of doing.

“As for what others are doing, I’m sure they have their reasons, and I can’t comment on that. But if it adds to creativity, excitement in the industry, and allows people to show their versatility, it’s all good,” he said.

Addressing concerns about cross-dressing conflicting with Ghanaian culture, Berko explained that filmmaking has its own unique culture and standards, adding that such acts are simply to play a role and nothing else.

“Life has gone beyond just thinking culture-based development. Your culture becomes a foundation, but there are other things too. People look at that character and enjoy it.

“I am not performing that and coming back to real life as a woman or behaving like one. It’s just for the arts, to play a role,” he explained.

Mikki Berko further illustrated his point by referencing Eddie Murphy’s iconic performance in “Coming to America,” where the actor played multiple roles, including that of an old man and a woman.

“That is a culture of filmmaking, a level of creativity that some of us are trying to adapt to. We’re not just doing it for ourselves; we’re using our culture as a foundation to attract others and help them understand our culture. Sometimes, we need to incorporate elements of their culture to make it easier for them to consume our content,” he added.

Yayra Koku, Director General of the National Identification Authority (NIA) Yayra Koku, Director General of the National Identification Authority (NIA)

New Director General of the National Identification Authority (NIA) Yayra Koku, has been heavily mocked by Ghanaians for exposing his ignorance on the value and functions of the Ghana Card.

In a Facebook post Thursday, Yayra Koku boldly announced his plans to link the Ghana Card to mobile money and bank accounts. He also added his plans to turn the Ghana Card into driver’s license, as well as a proposal for easy passport application with the Ghana Card.

However, shortly after making the post, Yayra Koku’s post attracted comments from a number of Ghanaians, who exposed what they called his ignorance of what the Ghana Card already does.

The chip-embedded Ghana Card, which captures the biometric details of holders, has already been linked with bank and momo accounts, as well as the databases of the GRA, making the Ghana Card numbers also their tax identification (TIN) numbers.

The Ghana Card has also been linked with the DVLA, the National Health Insurance Scheme, Controller and Accountant General Department (CAGD) to control public payroll, as well as SSNIT.

Respondents spared no time in reminding Yayra Koko the volume of work former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia did, in spearheading the integration of the Ghana Card into Ghana’s financial and other national identity systems.

“Dr. Bawumia have done it already. It seems like you are a foreigner in Ghana. Every Ghanaian with Ghana card has long been linked to their momo and account. Anyone who go to the bank to withdraw or deposit money can’t do that without Ghana Card,” wrote Eunice Debrah, in a direct response the new NIA CEO.

Many other comments reiterated Eunice Debrah’s post, and expressed shock that the new CEO of the NIA was unaware of the status of the present status and functions of the Ghana Card.

A number of contributors sarcastically told the new CEO that he and his party, the NDC, were so busy attacking Dr. Bawumia and basterdising the Ghana Card that they were not aware of what was happening.

Referee chief Alex Kotey apologises to George Afriyie over bribery claim

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie

Retired referee, Alex Kotey has apologised to former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie after the latter threatened legal action over bribery allegations made against him.

Speaking on Top FM, Kotey retracted his claims, stating that he had no intention of tarnishing Afriyie’s reputation.

“I have called George Afriyie to ask for his forgiveness. He is my close friend in football, and I didn’t mean to damage his image. I have sought his forgiveness so we can continue our friendship. I have retracted my statement,” Kotey said.

Afriyie, who previously served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Swedru All Blacks, had vowed to take legal action after Kotey alleged that he attempted to bribe him to influence officiating in favour of the club.

During an interview with Top FM, Kotey claimed Afriyie visited his house alongside a mutual friend and attempted to offer him money.

“George Afriyie came to my house and offered me a bribe during his time with All Blacks. I wasn’t aware of his visit until my friend, who accompanied him, informed me. I felt uncomfortable and initially refused to meet him. But after my friend convinced me, I agreed to speak with him. He wanted to give me money, but I told him I don’t engage in such things and advised him to give the money to his players instead,” Kotey alleged.

Responding to the accusation, Afriyie denied any wrongdoing and directed his lawyers to take legal action.

“I’m not 100% righteous, but during my time at All Blacks, Alex Kotey never officiated any of our three matches against Kotoko. I have instructed my lawyers to take him on,” Afriyie told Kessben FM.

Afriyie played a key role in All Blacks’ promotion to the Ghana Premier League in 2005 before leaving the club in 2008.

Awudome Kofe D/A Primary School authorities call for classroom blocks

By Daniel Agbesi Latsu

Awudome Kofe (O/R), Feb 6, GNA – Authorities at Awudome Kofe D/A Primary School in the Kadjebi of the Oti Region have appealed to the Kadjebi District Assembly, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and philanthropists to provide them with modern six-unit classroom blocks, along with necessary facilities.

Such a facility, they believed, would contribute to the educational experience of both students and teachers, fostering a more productive and enjoyable learning atmosphere.

Mr. Kpeguni Abdul Razak, the Assemblyman for Okanta Electoral Area, who made the appeal through the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said the lack of decent classroom blocks was affecting teacher retention, enrollment, and hindering the progress of the learners.

Mr. Kpeguni, who led the GNA to the school, therefore, appealed to the Kadjebi District Assembly and NGOs to provide with decent classroom block equipped with advanced technology, such as smart boards, projectors, and high-speed internet access to facilitate interactive and multimedia learning experiences.

He added that the provision of such modern facilities to the school would attract learners and teaching staff, who currently prefer attending modernized schools.

Mr. Samuel Dabo, the headteacher of the school told GNA that the school had 64 pupils and six teachers who study under a dilapidated muddy structure that was on the verge of collapse and classes stopped whenever it was threatening to rain.

Mr. Dabo said eight pupils had left the school this year to other institutions because of the poor conditions of their structure.

Mr. Aminu Mohammed, the School Management Committee (SMC) Chairman of the school, told GNA that the Awudome Kofe D/A Primary School was established in 1995 with the aim of providing basic education to the residents of Awudome Kofe and its environs.

He said that the residents provided the mud-roofed structure as a temporary measure to house the pupils, with the hope that the State and NGOs would help to obtain an appropriate structure, however, nothing had since happened.

He pleaded with the NGOs to help them secure modern classroom blocks for conducive teaching and learning environment.

Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore, has called on the embattled former Managing Director of SIC Insurance, Hollistar Duah-Yentumi, to cease her legal pursuit to stay in office.

According to the legislator, she might end up losing the battle due to the political change of office. Hence, she should discuss her exit and bow out from the office.

In a Facebook post on February 6, 2025, he stated, “Somebody get to this MD & ask her to relax. What was she thinking? That NDC would win elections & keep her at post??… I honestly don’t know where to place a CEO appointed by the NPP who is holding on to his or her post after your appointing authority has handed over power.

“The NDC must & they will pay you off! So, my fellow Ghanaian, pack, negotiate for all payments due to you & leave space for the NDC to have their field day.

“Next time, if any Ghanaian becomes a CEO, respect the political space that made you, your men at work & the cause of the Ghanaian. The balancing act is on you!”

On February 4, 2025, Duah-Yentumi filed a lawsuit against SIC Insurance and its newly appointed Managing Director, James Agyenim-Boateng, after President John Dramani Mahama’s announcement of Agyenim-Boateng as her successor.

In her suit, Duah-Yentumi claims that her employment contract guarantees her position until January 2028, unless terminated by the board or shareholders under certain conditions.

Women’s economic empowerment key to Ghana’s growth – Stakeholders advocate

0

Kathleen Flynn-Dapaah, Director of the Ghana Programme at the High Commission of Canada Kathleen Flynn-Dapaah, Director of the Ghana Programme at the High Commission of Canada

Seth Twum-Akwaboah, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), has commended the Women’s Innovation for Sustainable Enterprises (WISE) project initiative for its transformative impact on women entrepreneurs in Ghana.

He emphasized the importance of women’s economic empowerment during the grand close-out ceremony of the project in Accra on February 5, 2025.

“When rights are realized, growth is imminent,” he said.

He highlighted the significance of WISE in equipping women with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to break barriers, expand their businesses, and contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s economy.

He also called on the government to institutionalize policies that promote women-specific entrepreneurship and address challenges such as limited access to finance and market entry barriers.

“Women’s economic empowerment hinges on equal access to resources, finance, and leadership opportunities. Strong mentorship networks and industry linkages foster sustainable enterprises, while skills development in technical, digital, and financial areas drives business resilience and innovation.

“However, lasting growth requires policies that protect and promote women’s rights, ensuring a fair and inclusive economic landscape. While today marks the official close-out of this project, it is by no means the end of the journey.

“If we are to sustain the momentum and ensure continued growth, there must be deliberate policy actions to institutionalize women’s economic empowerment. I take this opportunity to call on the government to design and implement women-specific entrepreneurial policies that enhance productivity and competitiveness.

“These policies should address challenges such as limited access to finance, market entry barriers, and structural inequalities that hinder women-owned businesses from thriving,” he added.

Other key speakers at the event echoed similar sentiments. Constant Tchona, Country Director of Plan International Ghana, described WISE as a gender-transformative initiative that tackled the root causes of inequality and economic exclusion for women.

He noted that over 14,000 women and 1,600 men were impacted through financial inclusion programmes, training in climate-smart agriculture, and community-based business hubs.

Kathleen Flynn-Dapaah, Director of the Ghana Programme at the High Commission of Canada, underscored Canada’s commitment to gender equality through its Feminist International Assistance Policy (FIAP).

She applauded the resilience of the women entrepreneurs, particularly those who persevered through the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event celebrated the legacy of WISE, emphasizing that while the project may have come to an end, its impact will resonate for generations.

The speakers urged all stakeholders, government, private sector, and civil society, to sustain and expand initiatives that foster women’s empowerment and inclusive development.

The WISE Project, launched in 2020, was implemented by Plan International Ghana and Plan International Canada, with support from Global Affairs Canada’s Innovation for Women’s Economic Empowerment in Ghana (IWEEG) initiative.

It focused on providing women with the tools and opportunities needed to succeed in business, ultimately reinforcing the belief that investing in women is an investment in the nation’s future.

The Ghana Football Association has scheduled a tough international friendly match for Ghana Black Queens in February.

The FA has arranged an international friendly match between Black Queens and Morocco on Friday, February 21 2025 at the Pere Jego Stadium in Casablanca.

The team, under the guidance of new head coach Kim Lars Björkegren, is focused on enhancing their performance and securing a positive result to boost their chances of advancing in the WAFCON.

The friendly also provides Coach Björkegren with an opportunity to assess the current squad and newly invited players. The Black Queens have been drawn into Group C of the WAFCON, alongside defending champions South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania.

With the tournament just around the corner, this friendly match against Morocco will be an essential gauge of the team’s readiness.

State to recall fifth prosecution witness in Gyakye Quayson’s trial

0

An Accra High Court has granted a motion for the prosecution in the trial of James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North, to recall a witness pursuant to section 79 of the Evidence Act.

Madam Esi Dentaa Yankah, the Principal State Attorney (PSA), said the basis for the motion was that Latif Oshenu, the fifth prosecution witness in the ongoing trial, during his cross-examination, notified the court of a page that was omitted in an exhibit, which he had tendered into evidence.

The MP for Assin North is facing five charges; Deceit of Public officer, forgery of passport or travel certificates, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury, and false declaration for office.

He has since pleaded not guilty and has been granted bail.

Madam Yankah said the witness sought to refer to that omitted page but was unable to do so.

The prosecution sought for the witness to be recalled for the complete document to be placed before the court to enable him to refer to it as he sought to do during his testimony.

She prayed that the court should exercise its discretion in their favour because without that the said exhibit in its current form would be incomplete.

“We submit that the complete exhibit P is what will enable the trial court to do justice in the case rather than the court referring to a clearly incomplete document, the construction of which might affect the trial judge’s ability to access the absent page or otherwise,” she added.

The prosecution said a copy of the said exhibit had been attached to the affidavit in support of the motion bearing in mind that exhibit P before the court was a copy of the document that the witness tendered.

“We submit that these are exceptional circumstances, which warrant the recall of a witness,” she said.

Tsatsu Tsikata, Counsel for Mr Quayson, said: “We indicated in our notice in response what we intend to do. We have not seen the original documents, so we are not opposed.”

He said he just observed that when the State Attorney referred to a clearly incomplete document, that was what they put in evidence.

It was not as if somebody had changed the document that they put out before this court.

The court, presided over by Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh, said the omitted document was the Parliamentary nomination form.

She said the prosecution had to have the original document tendered attached to the application as mandated by the rules of the court.

The Judge said it should be noted that the prosecution had not followed the orders of the court to provide the accused with certain documents.

“The order is made again so that the prosecution provides the accused with those documents before the next adjourned date on February 12,” she added.

I will go to Mahama for a ministerial appointment

Gospel artiste, Diana Asamoah Gospel artiste, Diana Asamoah

Popular gospel musician and staunch New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporter, Evangelist Diana Asamoah, has expressed her interest in securing a political appointment under President John Dramani Mahama’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

Speaking on her popular *Akoko Abon* show on Angel FM, the celebrated gospel artiste, known for her unwavering support for the NPP, stated that President Mahama’s leadership is for all Ghanaians, irrespective of political affiliation.

“Mahama is here for all of us. I always say there is no money with NDC or NPP’s name on it. So, if the NPP comes to power, I will spend Ghanaians money because it belongs to all of us. If the NDC comes to power, I will do the same. If you look at the Ghanaian cedi, neither NDC nor NPP is written on it. President Akufo-Addo’s or John Mahama’s names are not written on any money,” she said.

Evangelist Diana Asamoah, famous for her hit song ‘Anopa Wim,” added that she has no issue with individuals supporting either the NDC or NPP when they are in power.

She revealed that she is waiting for the NDC government to settle into office before approaching President Mahama to discuss a potential political role.

Specifically, she expressed her desire for the president to establish a Ministry of Paternity Leave and appoint her as its minister.

“Since they (NDC) have returned to power, I am waiting for them to finish getting their affairs in order so I can go to President John Mahama and ask him to appoint me as the Minister for Paternity Leave, since he has not appointed anyone for that sector yet.,” he said.

Despite her interest in collaborating with the NDC government, Evangelist Diana Asamoah reaffirmed her loyalty to the NPP, describing it as her favorite political party.

“The NPP is my favourite party; I will never leave it. I am choosing the NPP. But I will support any government leading Ghana,” she said.

Addressing critics who suggested she insulted former President Nana Akufo-Addo following his exit from office, she dismissed such calls, stating, “It is not sensible to insult the elderly; such actions have serious consequences. If you want to live a good life, do not insult your elders.”

Evangelist Diana Asamoah played a significant role as a campaigner for the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and continues to be one of the party’s most vocal supporters.

NPP backbenchers educated but behaving like uneducated

0

Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip, Richard Acheampong Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip, Richard Acheampong

The Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip, Richard Acheampong, has strongly criticized some minority backbenchers in Parliament, accusing them of exhibiting unruly behaviour during proceedings.

According to Mr. Acheampong, while the NPP MPs seated at the back of the Chamber are highly educated—comprising lawyers, engineers, and former Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), their conduct in Parliament often contradicts their professional backgrounds.

“Only God knows the kind of leadership they provided when they were heading these institutions,” he remarked, expressing concern over what he described as their unparliamentary behaviour.

His comments were in reaction to a viral video circulating on social media in which one of the NPP backbenchers was heard making derogatory remarks towards NDC MP for Klottey Korle Constituency, Zenator Agyemang-Rawlings.

In the video, the MP told Dr. Agyemang-Rawlings to “sit down” while referencing her father, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, as a “murderer.”

Describing the incident as unfortunate and unacceptable, Acheampong condemned the use of vulgar language in Parliament, stressing that such remarks should not come from an “honourable member.”

“Why should the sins of a father be visited upon the son or daughter?” the Bia East MP questioned.

He made these remarks during an interview with Mac-Jerry Osei Agyemang on Accra-based Neat FM on Thursday, February 6, 2025.

Akufo-Addo’s gov’t didn’t deliberately inflict hardship on the Ghanaian people

0

Former finance minister, Dr. Amin Adam Former finance minister, Dr. Amin Adam

Former finance minister Dr Amin Adam has explained that the previous government did not intentionally inflict pain on the people of Ghana.

He was answering questions on the ballooning debts of the country that forced the government to do a restructuring when he made this known.

Dr Amin Adam said, “There is no government that will deliberately inflict pain on its people, especially in a democracy where the same government will want to retain power and continue to implement its programs.”.

He argued that some of the challenges Ghana is faced with were not caused internally but rather owed to some external factors.

To him, Ghana has done well with its recovery from the external shocks comparatively.

“Some of these challenges we are faced with some of them are attributed to external factors, and you have travelled around the world, you have participated in IMF programs and world Bank programs, you have read their documents, and even in the United States of America and even in Britain, their economies haven’t recovered as much as we have recovered because they are still affected by the same external factors that we were conflicted with,” he explained.

Adding that, “You’ll notice that at the time we had COVID, our president was very clear that we needed to do everything to protect human lives because you cannot bring lives back but you can bring the economy back. So we had to take very difficult decisions, including borrowing, and don’t forget that every government borrows,” he said on Accra-based Joy News.

ORAL will submit its report to me next week

0

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the Operation Recover All Loot Committee (ORAL) will submit a report on their activities since its establishment next week.

The president said after receiving the report, he will forward the same for the various institutions responsible for investigating corruption and corruption-related offences for further action.

He noted that he remains committed not only to constructing roads and schools, but also to establishing a brighter future for our children, the next generation, and all posterity.

He was, however, quick to add that he cannot do that without being accountable to the people who voted the National Democratic Congress (NDC) into office.

In achieving this, President Mahama announced plans to implement a very strict system of accountability and come out with a code of conduct for persons who occupy positions of trust.

He served notice that he will not only go after corrupt officials of the previous government but also those of his administration would be held accountable.

“We are not going to pursue only members of the past regime to account to the people of Ghana. We are going to pursue our own people and make sure they are held accountable to the people of Ghana. So even as we investigate those who have just left office and we carry out Operation Retrieve All the Loot, those who are current should also know that they will be held to the same standard as we are holding the past regime.

Next week, the ORAL Committee that I set up is going to present its report to me, and I will forward it to the investigative organisations to start their investigations against people who have misappropriated resources of this nation.”

The president made the remarks in Cape Coast on Thursday, February 6, 2025, as part of his ‘Thank You’ tour in the Central Region.”

ghana news Deliver your best to Ghanaians – GPCC to govt appointees

0

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has charged appointees of the new government to deliver their best in order to live up to the trust reposed in them.

It said as stewards, they should serve with humility and diligence.

“I want to let them know that leadership is when you are put in a position of trust. So you are given authority and you are a steward.

“So they should bear in mind that they are stewards for the people of Ghana. The people of Ghana have given them responsibility to lead our nation so they should do the best they can,” the First Vice President of the GPCC, Bishop Gordon Kisseih, said.

Conference

Bishop Kisseih was speaking at the opening of the 2025 GPCC Heads of Churches and Organisations Conference at the Pentecost Convention Centre (PCC) at Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region last Wednesday.

The event was on the theme: “Shining Our Stars in a Perverse World”.

The annual event brought together members of the Christian association from across the length and breadth of the country.

The conference is, among others, used to discuss the things of God, encourage and strengthen the rank and file, and pray for leaders and the nation.

Bishop Kisseih, who is the Founder of the Light International Church, said once the appointees had done well, Ghanaians would assess them over the four years and reward them by returning them to office.

Moreover, he said God would reward them if they were faithful in the work that had been assigned to them.

Disturbance

Commenting on post-election disturbances, he said peace was not just for a period as it was during the election but was a continuous process.

“We called on all Ghanaians for peace before the elections and all Ghanaians heeded that call.

“We want to remind Ghanaians again that peace is not just for a period.

Peace must be continual. It should be continuous.

So I want to encourage every person to ensure that even if you have grievances, let’s use peaceful means of addressing those grievances,” he emphasised.
Bishop Kisseih, therefore, reminded Ghanaians to continue to uphold the peace the country was enjoying for the smooth growth and development of the country.

Peace, he said, was an essential commodity that needed to be guarded.

He charged the clergy to be the light of the nation and the world at large to enable others to benefit.

Shine

“When we shine as light, we don’t benefit but others benefit from the light and that light must be consistent in order to be beneficial.

“For us to shine, our light must always be on,” Bishop Kisseih said.

The Holy Spirit of God, he said, was the source of the light of men of God, and that for their light to remain shining they must go to the source.

“We need to acknowledge God as the one who works in us,” he said.

He also called on the membership of the association to defend the Christian faith, saying, “Faith is what drives and inspires you.

So as Christians, our faith is to honour God, live a life that honours God and have a nation where godliness, uprightness, prosperity and increase continue.”

Ejura NDC supporters appeal to Mahama for MP’s appointment

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters in Ejura Sekyeredumasi Constituency are calling on President John Mahama to appoint their MP to one of the remaining deputy ministerial positions.

This move, according to the NDC supporters is a way to console the party’s grassroots, who are reportedly disappointed.

According to Sadiku Katadatu, the constituency research officer, appointing their MP, Muhammad Bawah Braimah, would make it easier for the party to campaign in the area for the next elections.

The constituency is deemed the second largest stronghold of the NDC in the Ashanti region, after Asawase, and has been loyal to the party since 1992.

“It is important to indicate that we take so much pride in the fact that the NDC has won all the nine organised presidential elections with huge margins from 1992 to 2024,” said Sadiku.

He noted that although the party lost a parliamentary election to the NPP in 2012, the constituency has consistently shown strong support for the NDC.

In the recent election, the constituency gave President Mahama and the NDC over 30,000 votes, making it the second-highest vote count in the region – a trend that has held steady over time.

“We are very frustrated, desperate and melancholic as a people, especially when all our neighbouring constituencies have been rewarded with ministerial appointments either under the NDC or the NPP regime.

“We are discriminatory the only constituency that has never been rewarded in that regard by the party we hold very dear to our hearts. Where have we gone wrong as a people? Where lies our loyalty to the NDC?” he quizzed.

Sadiku expressed his disappointment and humiliation on behalf of the MP and the people of the constituency.

According to him, the MP has made immense efforts to support the party in the constituency, and it’s disheartening to see those efforts go unrecognised.

“We the youth are saying here and now that, we cannot tolerate this kind of treatment anymore. The presidency and the national party should realise that Mr Bawa and his supporters suffered severely in the hands of the NPP in the last eight years and the time for the reward is now,” he stated.

Ghana’s economic recovery was faster than expected, let’s not reverse it – Dr Amin Adam

0

The immediate past Finance Minister says Ghana’s economic recovery was quicker than anticipated, urging the new administration to sustain the gains rather than undo progress for political reasons.

Dr Mohammed Amin Adam Anta speaking on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition on Thursday, highlighted the resilience of the economy despite global economic challenges, stating that Ghana had outperformed expectations in its recovery.

“I do not disagree that the economy was the major issue on the ballot because we all knew that the economy was difficult,” he acknowledged.

“And as I explained, it wasn’t only the Ghanaian economy. Most incumbents across the world who went through elections around the same time lost, so it wasn’t peculiar to Ghana. The economy really dominated the political debate.”

However, he was quick to point out that the economic challenges were largely influenced by external factors rather than purely domestic mismanagement.

“Our view is that these factors that led to our economic difficulties were not generally domestic-induced. Many other countries were facing the same problem, but we had done well within 12 months,” he noted.

Dr Amin Adam cited data from 2022 through 2024, which he said showed that the turnaround was not only real but swifter than anticipated by global financial institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as well as economic analysts within Ghana.

“If you look at the data from 2022 to 2023 and then 2024, you will see that the turnaround was quick. The recovery was faster than even anticipated by the World Bank, IMF, and many economic analysts, even in Ghana,” he stressed.

He underscored that macroeconomic stability was essential for sustained economic growth and noted that Ghana had achieved this despite undergoing debt restructuring—an exercise that usually causes economies to shrink.

“We were getting stability, macro stability, which is a condition for economic growth. And even after doing a debt restructuring, where countries that have done restructuring will record negative growth, we were recording an average of about 6.4% last year,” he revealed.

“It just shows that the economy was turning to positive levels, which, when sustained, could really reduce the suffering and economic hardship faced by the people.”

Dr Amin Adam, however, expressed concern that political shifts could undermine the hard-fought progress.

“The Ghanaian people decided that they wanted a change, and this is why I expected the new government to sustain the gains that we have made so that it translates into tangible benefits for the people,” he said.

Warning against political interference that could derail the recovery, he cautioned, “If you come in to do politics as usual, you lose the point and you are not really able to sustain those gains. And this is what I’ve seen President Mahama doing.”

ISDS congratulates Bagbin on his re-election as speaker

0

The Institute of Statisticians and Data Scientists (ISDS) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin on his re-election as Speaker of the ninth parliament of the Republic of Ghana.

His election reflects the confidence and trust placed in his leadership by Members of Parliament from across the political spectrum.

Mr. Bagbin’s re-election marks another milestone in his distinguished political career.

Having previously served as speaker of the 8th Parliament, he played a crucial role in maintaining parliamentary oversight, fostering national unity, and upholding democratic values.

His tenure saw significant legislative reforms, improved transparency, and enhanced cooperation between the executive and legislative branches of government.

Mr. Bagbin, a seasoned lawmaker, has been a dominant figure in Ghana’s political landscape for decades.

Before assuming the Speakership, he was the longest-serving Member of Parliament, representing the Nadowli-Kaleo constituency for multiple terms.

His vast experience in legislative affairs, governance, and public policy makes him a fitting choice to lead the nation’s legislative arm once again.

In a formal letter signed by Executive Secretary James Amewudah and President/Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Nicholas N.N. Nsowah-Nuamah, ISDS praised Speaker Bagbin for his unwavering commitment to democratic principles and legislative excellence.

“Your election is a testament to the confidence and trust placed in your leadership by the Honourable Members of Parliament across the political spectrum,” ISDS stated.

“Your stewardship of the Eighth Parliament demonstrated a steadfast commitment to upholding democratic principles and fostering national unity.”

The institute emphasized the importance of data-driven decision-making in governance, expressing its eagerness to collaborate with Parliament to enhance legislative oversight, improve policy formulation, and support national development initiatives.

As Speaker of Parliament, Bagbin is expected to play a pivotal role in ensuring that the legislative arm of government executes its functions effectively.

His leadership will be instrumental in addressing pressing national issues, enacting critical laws, and providing checks and balances to Ghana’s democratic governance.

With an increasingly dynamic political environment, his ability to mediate and build consensus among different political factions will be essential for legislative efficiency and national progress.

As Ghana embarks on another parliamentary session under his leadership, stakeholders, governance institutions, and civil society organizations will be keenly watching how Speaker Bagbin steers the affairs of Parliament.

His track record of dedication and leadership suggests that the Ninth Parliament will continue to play a crucial role in shaping Ghana’s democratic governance.

ISDS has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Parliament in leveraging statistical research and data science to inform policy decisions, improve governance, and contribute to sustainable national development.

Irate NDC youth in Ashaiman vandalise Chairman’s office over appointment discontent

0

As President John Mahama’s government begins to take shape, discontent is brewing in the Ashaiman constituency of the Greater Accra Region.

Frustrated youth in the area feel marginalised despite their consistent and overwhelming support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) since 1992, accusing the party of toying with their emotions.

On Thursday, a group of irate youth stormed the office of constituency chairman, Shaddad Umar Jallo, burning tires and shattering glass doors to express their displeasure.

Reports indicate that they initially planned to demonstrate against President Mahama and block traffic on the Accra-Tema motorway, but party leadership in the constituency managed to calm tempers before the situation escalated.

The youth, however, remain adamant that they will no longer be pacified with mere promises.

Presiding Member of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, Godwin Twumasi, urged the national leadership to take swift action, warning of further unrest.

“We have become a laughing stock. Our friends and neighbours in the NPP keep questioning our motivation for supporting the NDC when we are constantly left out during appointments,” he lamented.

Mr Twumasi highlighted that the only notable appointment Ashaiman has received is Alfred Kwame Agbeshie’s role as the 2nd Majority Leader in Parliament.

He pointed to President Mahama’s campaign promises as the root of the growing frustration.

“President Mahama promised to appoint someone from Ashaiman and to fix our deplorable road network. Until these promises are fulfilled, we don’t know how to convince the masses for 2028,” he stressed.

Mr Twumasi stated that appointing someone from Ashaiman does not necessarily have to be their MP. “Anyone competent enough in any role will help settle this,” he added.

With tensions rising, the 2nd Deputy Constituency Youth Organizer, Regina Agbagba, called on President Mahama to intervene before the situation spirals out of control.

“The youth have made it clear that our MP, Ernest Norgbey, has worked tirelessly, helping the NDC secure over 69,000 votes in the 2024 elections.

“Apart from President Mahama, Sammy Gyamfi, Ato Forson, Kwame Agbodza, Asiedu Nketia, and others made the same promise,” she recounted.

Expressing her frustration, she questioned Ashaiman’s role in the party. “Are we only good for demonstrations? Is that all we can do?

“The success the party attained here was by sweat and blood, with sleepless nights and lives put on the line. Ashaiman deserves better,” she cried.

Deputy Women’s Organizer, Beatrice Esinam Agbeko Teye, credited party executives for preventing what could have been a more troubling situation.

“We can only ask our constituents to remain calm. They want Ashaiman’s contribution to be recognised, and we trust in the president’s decision,” she said.

Meanwhile, Constituency Organiser Mark Apetor noted that beyond seeking appointments, the teeming youth are also demanding employment opportunities, particularly in local factories.

Despite efforts by party executives to ease tensions, there are fears that the youth may soon run out of patience.

The police have since stepped in to contain the situation and maintain peace in Ashaiman.

One of the Most Popular Skin Care Products, Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 Is Being Discontinued

0

It’s a sad day for the thousands of devoted fans of the cult-classic Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970. The beloved toner is being discontinued due to new FDA regulations banning one of its ingredients, phenol. The product has been around for decades, used by influencers and celebrities like Nicole Kidman, as well as everyday consumers alike, and its loyal customers are surely grieving the loss of their go-to staple. Here, we get into the details of why Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 is being discontinued, what you can use instead and more.

What is Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970?

Biologique Recherche

So, what exactly is Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 and why is it so popular? The lotion is essentially an exfoliating solution, a “multifunctional lotion that exfoliates, cleanses and purifies the epidermis, helping it maintain its acid pH balance. With daily gentle purification, the skin becomes mattified and revitalized,” the brand’s website says.

Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 came out in 1970 and has been a vital product in many people’s skincare routines for decades. It’s said to help smooth wrinkles, regenerate skin cells for brighter skin, treat acne and more. Some even may refer to it as “Botox in a bottle.”

Why is Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 being discontinued?

Some of the main ingredients found in Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 are niacinamide, glycerin, salicylic acid, sulfur and even vinegar (which helps explain its unpleasant smell). But it’s another one of its ingredients, phenol, that is causing it to be discontinued.

Phenol is an antiseptic, disinfectant and chemical compound used in both household products and some cosmetics like Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970. While it’s a beloved ingredient in the lotion, it, unfortunately, does pose safety risks to our skin, according to the CDC: “All forms of phenol cause irritation, and acute toxic effects of phenol most often occur by skin contact. Even dilute solutions (1% to 2%) may cause severe burns if contact is prolonged.”

Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 has less than 1% of phenol in its formula, but the FDA is banning the ingredient from being used in cosmetics and skincare.

When will Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 be discontinued?

The last shipments of Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 to the U.S. were sent in January. This has led to many users of the product to purchase however many they can get their hands on to stock up. Essentially, once each store that sells the lotion runs out, there will be no way to get it again.

Alternatives to Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970

If you’re a user of Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 and are now panicking to find an alternative, don’t worry. The brand will still be selling its other lotions, like Lotion P50 (not the 1970 version), Lotion P50W made for those with sensitive skin, Lotion P50V and Lotion P50 PIGM 400, all of which don’t contain phenol.

Other exfoliation lotions we like outside of Biologique Recherche are Prequel Mutli-Acid Milk Peel AHA Exfoliating Solution and Versed Daily Brightening Solution. Both of these drugstore options contain key ingredients of lactic acid and glycerin like Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970, without the phenol.

0

Ghanaian actor and politician, John Dumelo, has pledged his support for the creative arts industry despite his new positions as a Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister designate for Food and Agriculture.

Speaking at the launch of Celestine Donkor’s 11th Celestial Praiz concert on February 6, 2025, John appreciated the works of the gospel musician and promised to always lend her the needed support:

He noted that regardless of his involvement in agriculture and politics, he will still avail himself for activities in the creative arts.

“Despite the fact that I am an MP now and I am in the Agric Ministry, I still will not forget where I came from which is the arts sector and I will always be an arts person. I will always be a creative person and if we don’t develop our own who else will develop it for us,” he said at the programme which was held at Tang Palace in Accra.

He added that even though some people disregard the creative industry, it contributes greatly to the economy of the country.

Yesterday, the celebrated actor was announced as the Deputy Minister Designate for Food and Agriculture. Prior to his nomination he had been tipped by a number of people to occupy a ministerial position in the tourism, culture and creative arts ministry.

John Dumelo, for the past years has also been hugely involved in agriculture and has advised the youth to take the venture seriously.

Komenda Sugar Factory to be made operational – President Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has assured that the Komenda Sugar Factory in the Central Region will be made operational under his government.

He stated that his administration was committed to ensuring that the project proceeds as planned to make the Central Region the country’s largest sugar producer.

Addressing hundreds of people at a “Thank You” rally in Cape Coast today, President Mahama said the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry had been directed to provide an update on the status of the factory to facilitate the necessary action.

The President, who was accompanied by Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, was met at Victoria Park by hundreds of enthusiastic residents from across the region. Among them were chiefs, academics, clergy, and other identifiable groups.

The factory’s background

The then-NDC government secured a $35 million loan from the Indian Export-Import Bank, followed by an additional $24 million investment to revamp the factory’s operations.

The facility was inaugurated by former President Mahama in May 2016 but ceased operations shortly after.

The factory, which was expected to employ 7,300 people along the value chain, has remained largely non-operational since then.

The NPP government made several efforts to revive the factory, conducting multiple test runs, but full operations were hampered, with inadequate raw material supply cited as a critical challenge.

Last August, the then Minister of Trade and Industry, K.T. Hammond, announced plans to lease the Komenda Sugar Factory to West African Agro Limited, an India-based firm, for a renewable term of 15 to 20 years.

This announcement followed his disclosure to Parliament that the factory’s retooling was 98 per cent complete.

Concerns from outgrowers

Outgrower farmers have, however, often expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of transparency in the factory management’s engagement with them, arguing that the true state of the factory was not being disclosed.

President Mahama reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting farmers in the region, improving irrigation schemes and systems, and introducing policies to modernise agriculture in the Central Region and beyond.

Completion of Anomabo Fisheries College

The President also expressed concern over the prolonged delay in completing the Anomabo Fisheries College, which, according to him, was at an advanced stage when the NDC left office in 2016.

He assured that budgetary allocations would be made in March this year to ensure the project’s completion and inauguration before the end of the year.

Commitment to development

President Mahama highlighted the Central Region’s historical significance and immense contribution to national development.

He stressed that, beyond its prominence in tourism and education, the region held vast potential for agriculture and agribusiness, serving as a major food production hub for the country.

His government, he pledged, would invest in agricultural development and agribusiness to improve the livelihoods of the people in the region.

He also expressed gratitude to the region for voting for him and his vice-presidential candidate, saying their support affirmed their belief in a united, progressive, and forward-moving Ghana.

President Mahama further pledged to fulfil all his campaign promises to the nation, particularly to the people of the Central Region.

“As President, I also identify as a son of this region and commit to recognising and honouring its importance, whether in the area of educational infrastructure, healthcare, or economic empowerment. We will work together to elevate the lives of all who call this region home,” he stated.

He emphasised that the region would receive its fair share of national development.

Two students of Saviour Senior High School at Akyem Osiem have been arraigned before the Koforidua Circuit Court B for allegedly defiling and indecently assaulting a 14-year-old female student.

The accused, Michael, 18, and Emmanuel, a 17-year-old juvenile offender, are both Form Two boarders at the school, while the victim is a Form One student and also a boarder.

The incident occurred during the school’s inter-sports competition, which took place from Wednesday, January 22, to Friday, January 24, 2025.

During this period, students were given more freedom, and the victim reportedly mingled with the accused persons.

According to the prosecution, on January 23, 2025, at around 5:00 PM, Michael lured the victim to the school’s Science Block, where they met Emmanuel and three other students.

Michael later took the victim to a classroom in the Business Block, where he kissed her and left her alone.

Shortly after, Emmanuel entered the classroom and informed the victim that Michael had “blue balls,” a term the victim did not understand. Emmanuel explained that it meant Michael needed help to release sperm.

The victim reportedly agreed to assist, and Michael returned to the classroom, where he allegedly made the victim undress, inserted his finger into her vagina, and later had sexual intercourse with her. After Michael left, Emmanuel also entered the room and attempted to insert his finger into the victim’s vagina.

A cadet student suddenly appeared on the incident and reported it to the school authorities.

The victim’s mother, Owusua, a beautician residing in Osiem, subsequently reported the matter to the police.

Both accused persons were arrested on January 28, 2025, and admitted to the offense in their caution statements.

During their court appearance, Michael and Emmanuel were charged with defilement, indecent assault, and conspiracy to commit a crime.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Presiding Judge Her Honour Matilda Ribiro granted Michael bail in the sum of GH¢30,000 with two sureties, while Emmanuel was granted bail at GH¢15,000. The case has been adjourned to February 12, 2025, for further hearing.

Chief Inspector Offei Kunadu, the prosecutor, was led by Helen Sabrafo of the Attorney General’s office.
