Drug abuse inimical to youth development – NYA Director

0

NorthEast Regional Director of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Kampi Laari Robert, has described the abuse and misuse of drugs as an “enemy” to national development, particularly in the North East Region.

He has therefore urged young people to shun the practice.

He made the call during the “Walk for Life Campaign Against Drug Abuse,” held in Nalerigu, where he said the menace of drug abuse continues to raise serious concerns among parents, guardians, and duty bearers, stressing the need for urgent action by all stakeholders.

“As a body mandated to champion the interests of young people, we thought it wise to undertake this campaign to raise more awareness on its effects in the region,” he stated.

Mr. Laari emphasised that drug abuse not only destroys lives but also deprives the region of the energy and creativity of its youth, who were expected to be agents of socio-economic growth.

“Drug abuse is an enemy to the overall development of our region, and we must all wage war against it. I want to challenge the youth to see beyond their present challenges. They must know that drugs may give them temporary pleasure, but their long-term repercussions far outweigh them,” he added.

The sensitisation walk, organised by the NYA in collaboration with the Taskforce of the Nalerigu Youth Association and security agencies, sought to educate young people on the harmful effects of drug abuse and to mobilise community support to tackle the menace.

The event, which also formed part of NYA’s activities to mark Founders’ Day celebration in the country, witnessed sections of youth groups marching through some principal streets of Nalerigu carrying placards with inscriptions such as “The next President of Ghana may be you; don’t let drugs like Red and Tramadol abort your dreams”, “Chale, drugs no be vibe; focus be the real deal,” among others.

The Directorate, as part of the campaign, also engaged community radio stations to sensitise members of the public on the dangers of the abuse of drugs.

The Regional Director also gave a hint about plans by the Directorate to extend the campaign to every district in the region to ensure wider coverage and rescue the youth from the dangers of drug abuse.

Reverse sanctions against UCC in 48 hours or face mass protests – UTAG warns GTEC

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), University of Cape Coast (UCC) chapter, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to reverse sanctions imposed on the university.

In a report by adomonline.com on September 23, 2025, UTAG-UCC Secretary, Dr Isaac Boabeng, demanded that GTEC immediately withdraws its directive and issue a formal apology by Friday, September 26, 2025.

He warned that failure to comply would trigger mass protests.

“If GTEC fails to act, we will march to Accra. They should come and lock the University of Cape Coast and take the keys to Accra. GTEC and Professor Okloh must understand that there are laws in this country,” Dr Boabeng fumed.

UTAG condemns proliferation of fake degrees and honorary titles

GTEC recently announced the suspension of all government support and services to UCC, further listing the institution as ‘non-existent’ on its official portal.

The Commission explained that the move followed UCC’s alleged non-compliance with directives regarding the tenure of Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong.

Describing the sanctions as ‘unlawful, unjustifiable, and a direct attack on the dignity and livelihoods of staff,’ Dr Boabeng stressed that the action undermines the legal and institutional framework governing tertiary education in Ghana.

UTAG opposes allocation of office-holding roles to post-retirement contract staff

He further warned that withholding salaries as part of the punitive measures would amount to what he called a ‘criminal and reckless’ act against workers of the university.

Ghana calls for bold capital to drive Africa’s Clean Energy transition

Seidu Issifu speaking at the OPSWF in New York Seidu Issifu speaking at the OPSWF in New York

Speaking at the ClimateWorks Foundation & One Planet Sovereign Wealth Fund (OPSWF) Network High-Level Roundtable during the Unstoppable Africa 2025 conference, Ghana’s Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Seidu Issifu, delivered a powerful call for accelerated clean energy investment across the African continent.

The event, themed “Driving Investment into Clean Energy Projects in Africa,” convened global investors, development financiers, and policymakers at the Marriott Marquis in New York to address one of Africa’s most pressing challenges: mobilizing capital at scale for the energy transition.

“Africa is blessed with abundant solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal resources. But unlocking this potential requires more than goodwill — it requires capital, policy coherence, and bold partnerships,” he said.

Ghana’s Blueprint for Clean Energy Growth

Seidu Issifu highlighted the steps Ghana has taken to create a robust enabling environment for clean energy investment:

• Institutional Architecture: The establishment of the Office of the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability — the highest political signal of Ghana’s commitment to climate action — ensures whole-of-government coordination and accountability for climate and energy policy.

• Climate Change and Sustainability Hub: Currently in development, the Hub will serve as Ghana’s centre of excellence for climate finance mobilisation, policy innovation, and research. It will also provide investors with critical data, risk assessments, and a pipeline of bankable projects.

• Regulatory and Policy Reforms: Ghana is streamlining permitting processes for renewable energy projects, expanding feed-in tariffs and net metering regulations, and updating the Renewable Energy Master Plan in line with the country’s 24-Hour Economy and green industrialisation agenda.

• Investment Incentives: In collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, the government is introducing green tax incentives, duty exemptions, and blended finance facilities to attract private capital.

• Public–Private Partnerships: Ghana is working with development finance institutions, sovereign wealth funds, and private developers to roll out utility-scale solar projects, battery storage, and rural mini-grids, ensuring that clean energy benefits reach every community.

A Call for Scaled-Up Capital

Minister Issifu urged global investors and sovereign wealth funds to match Africa’s policy reforms with bold, patient capital.

“We must bridge ambition and capital,” he said. “De-risking projects, lowering the cost of finance, and creating investment-grade environments are key to unlocking the trillions needed for Africa’s clean energy future.”

He called for:

• Expanded blended finance facilities to mitigate currency, policy, and credit risks.

• Technical assistance to strengthen project preparation and pipeline development.

• Support for local manufacturing of solar panels, batteries, and green hydrogen components to build African value chains and create green jobs.

Clean Energy as Africa’s Growth Engine

In closing, Seidu Issifu reminded participants that the clean energy transition is not only a climate imperative but a generational opportunity:

“Africa’s clean energy transition is our pathway to industrial transformation, job creation, and economic competitiveness. Ghana is ready with the policies, the vision, and the institutional frameworks. Now is the time to match this enabling environment with bold, patient capital that can turn plans into power — literally.”

NFA To Launch National Film Awards

0

Ivan Quashigah

The National Film Authority (NFA) has announced plans to introduce a state-led award scheme dedicated to celebrating Ghanaian films and filmmakers.

Chairman, Ivan Quashigah, revealed the initiative during an interview on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, stressing that while private award shows exist, a national scheme will give broader recognition and push the film industry forward.

“It’s important that we have an award programme as part of our agenda to push interest in Ghanaian films. Award shows provide recognition… it shines a light on winners and the whole industry,” Ivan Quashigah explained.

The announcement follows the NFA’s maiden national dialogue on September 16 at the University of Ghana, which gathered filmmakers from across the country.

As part of its broader agenda, the NFA also plans to roll out initiatives such as cinema on wheels, film clubs in schools, cinema in the park, dubbing films into French and local languages, and regional cinema partnerships.

Established under the Development and Classification of Film Act, 2016 (Act 935), the NFA is mandated to promote a dynamic and sustainable film industry, regulate standards, and project Ghana’s cultural identity locally and abroad.

Deported West Africans withdraw injunction against Ghana

0

Eleven (11) West African nationals deported from the US have withdrawn an ex parte injunction application they filed at the High Court against Ghana, seeking to challenge their detention and subsequent repatriation.

The application, filed shortly before their removal from Ghana, was intended to halt the deportation process and compel the state to present the affected individuals in court to determine the legality of the action.

However, following their deportation, counsel for the group, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, told Citi News that his clients had no option but to discontinue the case at the Ghanaian court.

He expressed disappointment at what he described as deliberate delays within the country’s justice system.

He argued that the deportees were denied their fundamental rights to be heard and accused the state of undermining due process.

According to Barker-Vormawor, the group is now considering seeking redress at the ECOWAS Court of Justice in Abuja, Nigeria.

Background

The 11 persons include Nigerians Daniel Osas Aigbosa, Ahmed Animashaun, Ifeanyi Okechukwu, and Taiwo K. Lawson; Liberian national Kalu John; Togolese nationals Zito Yao Bruno and Agouda Richarla Oukpedzo Sikiratou; Gambian national Sidiben Dawda; and Malians Toure Dianke and Boubou Gassama.

They sued the Attorney-General, the Chief of Defence Staff, and the Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service at the Human Rights Division of the High Court, insisting their fundamental rights were violated.

In affidavits supporting their case, the applicants claim they were secretly removed from U.S. detention centers between September 5 and 6, 2025, shackled, and forcibly transported to Ghana without prior notice or explanation.

Upon arrival, they allege, they were handed over to Ghanaian authorities and confined in what they believe to be a military facility without access to due process or judicial oversight.

The applicants argue that their detention breaches Article 14(1) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which guarantees personal liberty, as well as Article 23, which protects the right to administrative justice.

They further contend that the principle of non-refoulement—which prohibits sending refugees or asylum seekers back to countries where they risk persecution or torture—has been ignored.

I was a bit shocked – Ghana’s Salis Abdul Samed on OGC Nice move – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Ghana international Salis Abdul Samed says he was a bit shocked by his move to OGC Nice during the summer transfer window.

The Black Stars midfielder reunited with former RC Lens manager Franck Haise at Nice, signing a three-year deal with the club.

Before joining Nice in the summer, the former Clermont Foot midfielder had spent the previous season on loan at Sunderland after falling down the pecking at Lens.

Despite his modest performance at Sunderland last term, Franck Haise ensured he capture the services of the Black Stars midfielder.

And according to Salis, he was shocked by his move to Nice, having struggled for minutes last season.

“I was a bit shocked because last year, I didn’t really play. He sent me a message on WhatsApp. I was like, ‘Is it really Haise?’ I responded straight away, and I didn’t even hesitate. We spoke, and he spoke about the project. He said that I was the player that he was looking for,” he said as quoted by Getfootballnews.

Since joining Nice, the Black Stars midfielder has made three appearances in the French Ligue 1.

Former National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and current Member of Parliament for Akuapim North, Sammi Awuku, has joined the party’s youth wing for its ongoing protest against what they describe as state-sponsored harassment of party members by the ruling government.

The protest, known as ‘Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna,’ commenced on Tuesday morning, September 23, 2025, at Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange and is expected to end at the Jubilee House, where a petition will be presented to the Presidency.

‘The youth of Ghana no longer safe under this government’ – NPP alleges

Speaking to journalists during the walk, Sammi Awuku emphasised what he described as the selective application of the rule of law by the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.

He noted that under the current regime, NDC members who come into contact with the law and law enforcement agencies are treated differently, including being granted bail under different circumstances compared to others.

NPP sets September 23 protest against alleged state-sponsored harassment

As part of the protest, the NPP youth wing is also scheduled to visit the Police Headquarters, where another petition will be presented to the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The party has cited the arrests of some of its leading members, including the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, alias Wontumi, and the Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, alias Abronye DC, as grounds for the protest.

Ken Ohene Agyapong’s pragmatic strategy to transform Ghana’s economy

Ken Agyapong has proven beyond doubt that he doesn't just dream, but he builds Ken Agyapong has proven beyond doubt that he doesn’t just dream, but he builds

“When Asia roared, the world listened – and the game changed.”

The Asian Miracle is the breathtaking tale of how the Four Asian Tigers – Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan – roared their way from poverty to prosperity in the late 20th century.

Powered by export-driven industries, bold state leadership, and massive investment in education, skills, and technology, these nations delivered sizzling GDP growth of 6 – 8% year after year.

With rock-solid macroeconomic stability, cutting-edge infrastructure, and smart governance, they transformed almost overnight – shifting from agrarian roots to industrial powerhouses and setting the global gold standard for economic success.

This is the very model that Ghana’s number one industrialist, Hon Kennedy Agyapong, is determined to replicate when entrusted with the leadership of our nation.

Bold, pragmatic, and results-driven, Kennedy Agyapong already owns Africa’s largest cold store, West Africa’s largest steel factory, Ghana’s largest starch factory, and several other industries.

With Africa’s largest pharmaceutical and ethanol hubs also in the pipeline, Hon Kennedy Agyapong has proven beyond doubt that he doesn’t just dream – he builds.

Now, imagine that same industrial energy scaled to the national level.

That is Kennedy Agyapong’s promise: a bold, practical transformation of Ghana’s economy.

All he needs from us is our mandate.

On 31st January 2026, let’s vote massively for Kennedy Agyapong as our flagbearer.

Ghana is ready for its presidency in 2028.

Let’s make him President and together roar our way into a new era of prosperity.

Radio stations keep recycling reggae songs from over a decade ago – Rocky Dawuni laments

0

Rocky Dawuni is a Ghanaian musician Rocky Dawuni is a Ghanaian musician

Multiple Grammy-nominated reggae musician, Rocky Dawuni, has expressed concern that Ghanaian radio stations are keeping reggae music stuck in the past by continually recycling songs that are over a decade old instead of spotlighting fresh releases.

Speaking on GhanaWeb’s X Space on September 19, 2025, Rocky Dawuni said many radio stations have failed to update their reggae playlists or explore the wealth of new music being produced by contemporary reggae artistes.

How Wode Maya, Dentaa, Rocky Dawuni, and Ibrahim Mahama reacted to diplomatic passport honour

He believes this lack of support is one of the main reasons many Ghanaian reggae musicians now blend reggae with other genres, to gain airplay and recognition, since their pure reggae tracks are often sidelined.

According to Rocky Dawuni, Ghana is not lacking in quality reggae music. In fact, he said, many local productions are on par with international standards.

However, he lamented that radio slots dedicated to reggae have not been effectively used to promote homegrown talent, calling for a “reset in mindset” when it comes to reggae programming.

‘African music must be the tool for the continent’s redevelopment’ – Rocky Dawuni

“When you listen to the radio shows in Ghana, I turn on various reggae shows. When you listen, the set list or the playlist is still the same playlist that I’ve been hearing for the last 15 years. There has not been reinvigoration or exploration to bring new music that we are putting out there.

“You put out a reggae song, and then you listen. But in terms of the reggae shows, it’s still playing the same songs that we used to hear. And I’m not saying that those songs are good or they’re not good

“All I’m saying is that there is that real estate of opportunity that almost all radio stations have shown for reggae music, but it has not been converted as a means to support the local homegrown reggae music, which it needs to do.

“That’s why artistes sometimes have to integrate other genres in order for them to pivot themselves to get more airplay and recognition from other genres that are looking at authentic sounds coming from our country in order to project it,” he said.

He added, “So, I feel there needs to be a total reset of the mindset when it comes to the reggae that is being played on the slots of reggae for most of our stations to integrate. I’m not saying that if music is not well-prepared, it’s not up to par, you should play it just because it’s Ghanaian.

“But there is a lot of great Ghanaian reggae that is on par with anyone you can find anywhere around the world. It should be integrated with all of the ones that are being played.”

‘I refuse to be silenced on galamsey’ – Cadman Mills to critics

0

Cadman Mills is an economist Cadman Mills is an economist

Cadman Mills, brother of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, has reiterated his strong stance on intensifying the fight against illegal mining activities.

According to him, he will not be cowed into silence on issues that concern the nation, specifically “galamsey”.

#StopGalamsey: ‘Ghana is watching how you deal with illegal mining’ – Barker-Vormawor to government

The economist refuted claims from critics that criticising the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, of which he is a member, makes him disloyal.

He explained in a strongly worded X post on September 22, 2025, that speaking out creates space for debate and increases the chances of citizen-centered policies being adopted.

“You are not “disloyal” because you criticise your political party’s policies and sometimes with passion. A political party is not (and should not be) a monolith. In speaking against your party’s policies, you encourage debate and increase the chances of better policies being adopted.

“I refuse to be silenced on galamsey (on other policies), because of: (1) the patently false claim that I was silent on the misdeeds of the previous government in mining (I wrote volumes) or (2) that as a “party elder” I should not publicly express my disagreements with my party’s policies. I am a party member and elderly (very elderly) but I am not “a party elder”. Those (muzzled) creatures belong the party’s “council of elders”,” he wrote.

The statesman had earlier criticised President John Dramani Mahama over the country’s fight against illegal mining, popularly known as “galamsey”.

In a post shared on Sunday, September 14, 2025, Atta Mills pointed out that “galamsey” is killing Ghanaians and must be stopped as a matter of urgency.

Global interest rates set to fall further – Fitch

0

Fitch Solutions is a UK-based research firm Fitch Solutions is a UK-based research firm

Central banks around the world are expected to continue trimming their policy rates through the second half of 2025, Fitch Solutions has said.

In its latest report titled ‘Mid-Year Update: Banking Key Themes for 2025’, the UK-based research firm forecasts that major institutions like the European Central Bank (ECB), the US Federal Reserve, and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) will collectively cut rates by up to 50 basis points before the year ends.

While lower interest rates may offer relief to borrowers, Fitch warns they could squeeze banks’ profits.

The impact is already being felt, especially among US and European banks, where net interest income — the money banks earn from lending — is under pressure.

“Profitability resilience will depend largely on the extent to which rate cuts reinvigorate loan demand, as well as performance in banks’ non-interest income segments,” part of the report read.

Fitch notes that banks’ ability to stay profitable will depend on whether these rate cuts spark new loan demand and how well they perform in areas beyond traditional lending.

Cedi hits GH¢12.27 against one dollar amid forex pressures

In Ghana, the Bank of Ghana has already taken bold steps, slashing its policy rate by a substantial 650 basis points since the start of the year.

Adding to the financial sector’s challenges is the ripple effect from President Donald Trump’s April 2025 tariff announcement.

Although banks weren’t directly targeted, the move triggered widespread market volatility, dragging down bank share prices across the globe.

Fitch explains that the real threat lies in the secondary effects, slower economic growth, unstable exchange rates, and shifting interest rate expectations.

These factors can erode investor confidence, dampen lending activity, and stall mergers and acquisitions.

While large US banks with strong capital buffers have weathered the initial shock, others haven’t been as fortunate. Institutions with heavy exposure to tariff-affected regions, such as HSBC’s operations in Mainland China and some Spanish lenders, saw sharper declines in their share prices immediately after the announcement.

IMF team to begin 5th review of Ghana’s programme on September 29

Fitch cautions that this politically driven uncertainty makes it harder for banks to balance the benefits of monetary easing against the risks posed by new tariffs and rising geopolitical tensions.

High interest rates have also worsened structural problems in the commercial real estate (CRE) sector, particularly in office spaces.

In the US, demand for office buildings has dropped post-pandemic as remote work continues to reshape workplace habits.

Fitch reports that overdue CRE loans in the US rose to 1.6% in the first quarter of 2025 — the highest level since 2014. Smaller regional banks are feeling the strain most, given their heavy exposure to the sector.

Meanwhile, larger banks are better protected due to stronger capital positions.

Although there are early signs that US CRE prices may be stabilising, Fitch warns that the underlying demand issues won’t go away unless office attendance picks up significantly.

In Europe, banks have limited exposure to the US CRE market, but Deutsche Bank stands out as the most affected.

German banks, in particular, are grappling with CRE challenges.

By the end of 2024, CRE loans made up 9.9% of total loans, and non-performing loans in this segment had climbed to 5.9%.

Galamsey: State of Emergency not necessary, go after financiers

0

Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has urged President Mahama and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to focus on arresting financiers of illegal mining, rather than declaring a state of emergency as a means to end the menace.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Dr. Adomako Kissi argued that targeting the financiers behind galamsey would be more effective than invoking emergency powers.

“I also think that it is not necessarily the state of emergency, let’s go after those financing galamsey that don’t need a state of emergency. I am wondering how sophisticated they are. I sit in my small corner, knowing that if I trace the kingpin in a local environment, I can match him straight to the house he comes to in Accra,” he said.

He maintained that arresting key figures in the affected communities could easily lead security agencies to the “almost ten real galamsey financiers in the country.”

“You don’t need a lot of CID training; if they truly want to do it, they can. There are about ten kingpins in this country. I am surprised if the NIB supposedly doesn’t know them,” he added.

Dr. Adomako Kissi further noted that if the government could investigate NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, for alleged involvement in galamsey, then it was clear that the state knew the individuals behind the trade.

“Let me state that, for instance, admittedly our own chairman, Chairman Wontumi is known for one or two reasons and has been investigated. Are we telling Ghanaians that he is the only person?” he questioned.

UK’s Trade Commissioner for Africa visits Ghana to advance modern partnership

The Trade Commissioner for Africa, John Humphrey, arrived in Ghana on Monday, September 22, for a three-day visit aimed at deepening UK-Ghana trade and investment partnerships across key sectors.

This high-level visit comes at a strategically opportune moment, aligning with Ghana’s renewed focus on economic transformation.

With the recent launch of the BIG PUSH initiative and ongoing efforts under the 24-Hour Economy Programme, HMTC’s presence offers a timely opportunity to engage with the new government and reinforce the UK’s commitment to building innovative, sustainable, and mutually beneficial business partnerships.

 HMTC’s key engagements will include:

  • A site visit to AngloGold Ashanti in Obuasi, part of the UK-Ghana Mining Trade Mission, to grow mining sector partnerships.
  • Meeting with delegates of the recent UK-Ghana Healthcare Roadshow to progress commercial deals initiated during the roadshow.
  • Participation in the Developing Markets Associates (DMA) UK-Ghana Trade and Investment Mission, supporting UK companies exploring opportunities in Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy initiative.

Over 20 UK companies are participating in the DMA UK-Ghana Trade and Investment Mission and the UK-Ghana Mining Trade Mission, including firms such as Health Consultants International, Gapuma Group, PowerX Equipment, GE HealthCare, Aqua Africa, QGMI, HED International, and Mine Tech Services.

These missions are focusing on strategic sectors, including mining, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, and technology, offering UK businesses the opportunity to engage directly with senior public and private sector stakeholders and explore commercial partnerships aligned with Ghana’s priorities.

Ahead of the visit, the Trade Commissioner for Africa, John Humphrey, said, “I am delighted to be visiting Ghana again at such an important time. The UK is committed to supporting Ghana’s development ambitions, including its 24-hour economy agenda, through strong commercial partnerships.

“I look forward to deepening our collaboration across key sectors and unlocking new opportunities for UK and Ghanaian businesses.”

British High Commissioner, Dr Christian Rogg, said, “I am pleased to welcome His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner to Ghana. This visit reflects the UK’s enduring relationship with Ghana, rooted in shared values and a commitment to mutual prosperity.

“In response to President Mahama’s call for deeper UK investment, we’re pleased that over 20 UK companies are coming to Ghana as part of the two trade missions, exploring opportunities to grow and partner, and leverage Ghana’s strategic position within the AfCFTA.”

By facilitating direct engagement between UK businesses and Ghanaian stakeholders, the visit is helping translate partnership into practical outcomes that benefit both economies.

Cost-cutting reforms at the UN put staff jobs on the line

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres speaks during a high-level meeting to mark 80th anniversary UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres speaks during a high-level meeting to mark 80th anniversary

The United Nations plans to abolish senior posts and merge departments in a bid to reduce costs, eliminate duplication, and improve efficiency, according to a new report by Secretary-General António Guterres.

At least five Under-Secretary-General positions will be scrapped, while other roles will be merged or phased out. The proposals are contained in Guterres’s latest reform update ahead of this week’s UN General Assembly in New York.

The report — Shifting Paradigms: United to Deliver — outlines restructuring across the UN’s four pillars: peace and security, sustainable development, humanitarian operations, and human rights.

The proposals are likely to resonate with African leaders, including Kenya’s President William Ruto, who has called for a United Nations “fit for purpose” as they head to New York.

Peace operations

In peace operations, the UN wants to set a “new agenda” focusing on prevention, peacebuilding and political solutions. It plans to create a Peacebuilding and Peace Support Office, consolidating functions currently split between the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and the Department of Peace Operations. The new office will handle peacebuilding, disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration, security sector reform, and justice and corrections.

“This unified structure would provide more coherent support to member States from prevention through transition, ensuring that security gains are reinforced by institution building and development,” the report says.

One Assistant Secretary-General post will be abolished under the restructuring. Disarmament and counterterrorism functions will also be consolidated into a single peace and security pillar linked with development, human rights, and humanitarian work.

Guterres further proposes merging the UN Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and the UN Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) with the Office for Disarmament Affairs (ODA), while safeguarding expert independence.

The reforms build on earlier cost-saving measures, such as relocating key agency functions from New York to Nairobi. An internal review found these moves — covering UNFPA, the children’s fund UNICEF, UN Women, and UNOPS — could save up to $92 million annually through 2029.

Guterres said the UN’s 80th anniversary provides an opportunity to strengthen the institution “in a world scarred by brutal and widespread conflicts, deep inequalities and injustice, flagrant violations of human rights and looming existential threats”.

“Our 80th anniversary is therefore a moment of opportunity: a chance to ensure that the forces of renewal and progress prevail over inertia,” he told member States on Monday. “By acting with unity and purpose now, we can equip the organisation to meet the challenges of the future.”

The proposals are part of the UN80 Initiative, but member States will have the final say when debate begins at the General Assembly.

NPP Stages “Resistance” Protest Against Alleged Government Harassment

0

New Patriotic Party (NPP)

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) launched a major demonstration today in Accra, challenging what the opposition describes as systematic harassment of its members by the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. The protest, dubbed “Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna” (We Resist Fear), began at 6:00 a.m. from Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, drawing hundreds of party supporters and sympathizers.

The demonstration represents the opposition’s most significant challenge to President John Dramani Mahama’s administration since the NDC assumed power following the December 2024 elections. Party leaders cite a pattern of arrests targeting NPP figures as evidence of what they term “selective application of justice.”

Central to the protest is the case of NPP Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, known as Abronye DC, who was remanded into custody for the second time on September 12, 2025, by Circuit Court Judge Samuel Bright Acquah after being denied bail. The case has become a rallying point for opposition claims of political persecution.

The party also references concerns over Chairman Wontumi and other party executives, though specific details of recent arrests remain contested. Abronye DC was charged with “offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace” and remanded into police custody, prompting widespread criticism from NPP leadership and legal experts.

The NPP has accused President John Mahama and the ruling NDC of reintroducing Ghana’s “culture of silence”, citing arrests of opposition members and alleged abuse of state power. This reference recalls Ghana’s authoritarian past when political dissent was suppressed through intimidation tactics.

Opposition Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha, who announced the protest two weeks ago, framed the demonstration as defending democratic principles. The party’s statement called on “all patriots, youth, and citizens who believe in liberty and accountability” to participate in what they describe as resistance against intimidation.

The timing of the protest is significant, occurring less than nine months into the Mahama administration’s second term. Political analysts suggest this early confrontation indicates potential challenges the government may face in managing opposition relations throughout its tenure.

The arrests have drawn criticism from various legal figures, including prominent lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who questioned the judicial handling of cases involving opposition figures. Such criticism suggests broader concerns about the independence of Ghana’s judiciary under the current administration.

The demonstration highlights growing tensions between Ghana’s major political parties, with the NPP positioning itself as a defender of democratic freedoms against alleged government overreach. The party’s ability to mobilize supporters for the protest demonstrates its organizational capacity despite being in opposition.

Government officials have yet to respond comprehensively to the NPP’s allegations, though the Ghana Police Service has maintained that all arrests follow due process and are based on specific legal violations rather than political considerations.

The protest occurs against the backdrop of Ghana’s traditionally competitive political environment, where power has alternated between the NPP and NDC since the return to constitutional democracy in 1993. The current tensions suggest this pattern of democratic competition faces new challenges in the contemporary political landscape.

Today’s demonstration will be closely watched as an indicator of how Ghana’s democratic institutions handle opposition challenges to government authority in an era of increasing political polarization across Africa.

Kumasi Bounces Back After Asantehemaa’s Funeral

Traffic on the streets of Kumasi

BUSINESS ACTIVITIES in the Ashanti Regional capital of Kumasi were in full swing on Friday and Saturday after last Thursday’s lockdown.

The boisterous city was virtually turned into a ghost town on Thursday, following an order from the Manhyia Palace for suspension of business activities.

The strict order was in honour of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom III, whose burial service was being held at the Manhyia Palace on the day.

Banks, shops and schools in the city were all closed in honour of the deceased queen, because residents of Kumasi respect the authority of the Manhyia Palace.

Some of the people, who spoke to the DAILY GUIDE on Thursday morning, said Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s word is a law for them, hence closing their shops.

“Otumfuo is called ‘Nyamekesee’, which literally means the ‘biggest of all the gods’, so we do whatever he commands us to do,” Prince Kumi, aka ‘Maxi’, disclosed.

According to Maxi, he is a car dealer, but like other businesses in the city, he closed his garage on Thursday to be at the Manhyia Palace to bade goodbye to the late queen.

But when the lockdown was lifted on Friday morning, Kumasi instantly returned back to life, as shops, markets, banks and offices in the city were all opened.

The usual vehicular traffic on the major streets, especially roads that lead to Adum, the Central Business District (CBD), were back on Friday and Saturday.

When the paper visited the city on Friday afternoon, traders were making brisk business. The usual human traffic at Kejetia Market was also visible.

President John Dramani Mahama has called on African leaders to reframe health as a strategic investment in development and sovereignty rather than a financial burden.

Speaking at a high-level meeting of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) in New York on Monday, Mr Mahama said Africa’s future depended on resilient health systems and sustainable financing.

“Health is not a cost. It is the engine of productivity and the foundation of sovereignty,” he declared.

The meeting, held under the theme “Securing Africa’s Health Sovereignty: Political Leadership for Sustainable Health Financing, Local Manufacturing, and Pandemic Preparedness”, brought together heads of state and government ahead of the United Nations General Assembly’s 80th session.

Discussions centred on Africa’s efforts to secure its health sovereignty in the aftermath of COVID-19 by prioritising local vaccine manufacturing, securing resources for sustainable healthcare, and preparing for future pandemics.

President Mahama is expected to deepen this conversation on Tuesday when he hosts a side event titled “The Accra Reset: Reimagining Global Governance for Health and Development”. The session, scheduled for 8:00 p.m. GMT, will convene policymakers and global partners to consider new frameworks for health governance and international cooperation.

His interventions highlight Africa’s push for greater self-reliance in health financing and preparedness, ensuring the continent is not left exposed in future global health crises.

Utility bills may rise as PURC prepares 2026 tariff review

PURC begins consultations ahead of 2026 utility tariff review PURC begins consultations ahead of 2026 utility tariff review

Ghana’s Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) is preparing to implement a major utility tariff review, effective January 2026, under its ongoing Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) framework.

According to myjoyonline.com report, the upcoming review will be a critical regulatory exercise aimed at balancing long-term sector sustainability with fair pricing for consumers.

The MYTO framework, covering the period 2025 to 2030, provides predictability for investment planning while allowing for periodic adjustments in line with economic conditions and industry performance indicators.

Here are the utility tariff hikes proposed for 2025

This latest review will consider significant capital investments already made by utility providers, with mechanisms expected to be introduced to help recover committed costs.

Earlier this month, PURC began stakeholder consultations across the country as part of ongoing consultations for the 2025–2030 MYTO.

Electricity and water service providers are lobbying for tariff adjustments that would enable them to sustain operations amid rising costs and investment needs.

The GWCL cited risks posed by illegal mining as a threat to its operations, influencing the tariff hikes it proposed.

Industry watchers have cautioned that the forthcoming MYTO review is separate from the Quarterly Tariff Adjustment, which PURC could also announce in the coming weeks.

The quarterly review, which considers inflation, exchange rate performance, and petroleum product costs, is due in October.

While inflation and global crude prices have been easing, recent depreciation pressures on the cedi could influence the regulator’s final decision.

The Fisherman’ premieres to full houses in Accra

0

Hundreds of Ghanaian movie enthusiasts filled the Silverbird Cinemas at the Accra Mall and West Hills Mall on Friday, 19th September 2025, for the premiere of The Fisherman, a film written and directed by Zoey Martinson.

The audience also featured renowned creatives, media personalities, and other public figures.

The Fisherman tells the story of Atta Oko, an elderly Ghanaian fisherman who teams up with a talking fish and three young people on a journey to the city to secure a loan that will help them buy their own boat.

Atta Oko, played by Ricky Adelayitor, dreams of becoming the boat chief of his town after years of hard work.

However, when the time comes, the mantle passes instead to the arrogant son of the outgoing chief, played by Ajeezay, with veteran actor Fred Amugi also featuring. Despite his education, the new chief’s son is clueless about fishing and life at sea.

Disappointed, Atta Oko encounters a talking fish and believes, through superstition, that it carries a traditional message for him. He later meets three young friends: Kobina (William Lamptey), Shasha (Endurance Dzedzo) and Emmanuel (Kiki-Romi) who want to form their own boat crew.

Together, they set out for the city in search of money to purchase a boat, with their adventure driving the plot.

Patrons at the premiere gave glowing reviews, praising the film’s production quality, storyline and characterisation.

According to film critic and writer Tony Asankomah, The Fisherman “reminds you of the prospects and potential of the Ghanaian film industry and its potential to tell stories anchored to our folklore while also tackling present-day themes and issues in an entertaining way.”

Ghana’s first official selection to the Venice Film Festival, The Fisherman has also won an award at the Los Angeles Pan African Film Festival. The production was by Luu Vision Media.

Gov’t conflicted in galamsey fight – Cadman Atta Mills

0

Cadman Atta Mills, brother of the late President Prof. John Evans Atta-Mills, has questioned the government’s commitment to ending illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, suggesting that economic interests are undermining the fight.

Speaking on Joy FM on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Mr. Atta Mills said the administration appears “conflicted” in its approach, despite mounting public pressure for President John Dramani Mahama to declare a state of emergency over the crisis.

“I see, and maybe I am wrong, but I don’t think I am, that the government is a little conflicted in its fight against galamsey. It is not taking it seriously,” he said.

He argued that revenue flows from the illegal trade are being diverted into official foreign exchange channels, helping to stabilise the Ghanaian Cedi, which creates a dilemma for the government.

“The benefit that clearly the government is receiving, because they are diverting the foreign exchange that has gone into unofficial channels into the official channels, is doing a lot to stabilise the value of the Cedi. So that is one of the reasons why the government is a little bit conflicted about it (fight against galamsey),” he explained.

His remarks add to a wave of criticism from civil society groups and activists who insist that illegal mining has reached emergency levels, threatening water bodies, agriculture, and human lives.

WiSTEMGh holds 6th Girls’ Camp to Inspire young women into STEM

0

More than 300 Senior High School girls are taking their first big step into the world of innovation through the annual Girls’ Camp organized by Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Ghana (WiSTEMGh).

Now in its sixth year, the program has camped 320 students from 30 schools across five regions at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The week-long program brings together girls, mostly pursuing General Science, with the aim of demystifying science while building their confidence and interest in STEM education.

The camp, themed “STEM Without Limit: Empowering and Inspiring Girls who Change the Game”, takes students out of the classroom and into real-world experiences, including industrial tours, mentorship sessions, and hands-on projects.

With 60 percent of participating schools drawn from rural areas, organizers say the camp is deliberately structured to bridge the gap between elite urban schools and those with fewer resources.

Head of the Gender Inclusive and Vulnerability (GIV) office at KNUST and General Secretary of WiSTEMGh, Prof. Mercy Badu, explained that exposing young women to practical applications is key to fueling their interest.

“We think that when they are exposed to the practical applications of STEM, they will end up appreciating it more because then they see it in their day-to-day activities. Their interest will grow and that will cause them to have some love for the field,” she said.

One of the highlights of the camp is the mini-project, where students develop innovative solutions to everyday problems.

Co-chair of the camp and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Animal Science, Dr. Anthoinette Simpah Anim-Jnr, said the exercise has proven to be a turning point for many girls.

“They get to do hands on or practical projects that will impact lives and solve societal problems. Once they get to understand, have a feel and passion for what they are doing, it’s easier for them to choose, making it easier for them to decide on future careers,” she explained.

However, organizers say sustaining the program remains a challenge.

Founder of WiSTEMGh, Prof. Ibok Oduro, appealed to government, industry, and private partners to step in with financial support in order to expand the project.

“If every community or stakeholder decides that they are going to pick two schools from their regions and sponsor them, we will be open to do that,” she urged.

Luv FM, one of the camp’s sponsors, has pledged continued support to amplify the impact of the program and ensure the initiative reaches more young women across the country.

Since its inception in 2018, WiSTEMGh Girls’ Camp has provided a platform for hundreds of young women to explore science and technology in ways that go beyond the classroom

Ecuador to overtake Ghana as world’s second-largest cocoa producer

0

File photo of a cocoa farm File photo of a cocoa farm

Ecuador is on course to produce more than 650,000 metric tons of cocoa in the 2026/2027 season and could surpass Ghana as the world’s second largest grower of the chocolate ingredient, the chairman of the country’s cocoa exporters association said.

Anecacao’s Ivan Ontaneda told Reuters via email that thanks to soaring world cocoa prices, farmers – backed by the public and private sector – are investing more and more in their plots and getting increased yields.

Cocoa prices more than doubled last year, reaching record highs above $12,000 a ton following failed harvests and disease in West African producers Ivory Coast and Ghana, which supply about half of the world’s cocoa.

An increase in production in South America, where Ecuador is the leading grower, has helped to fill the supply gap, and prices have fallen by about a third this year. They remain, however, at historically elevated levels.

Government raises cocoa producer price to $5,040 per tonne for 2025/2026 season

Farmers in Ecuador get around 90% of the world price, according to Ontaneda. In the Ivory Coast and Ghana, by contrast, farmers receive about 60-70% of the world price at best.

“Ecuador’s production has shown steady growth (for) years. Ghana’s production has been volatile,” said Ontaneda.

A Reuters poll released earlier this month forecast that Ghana, which is battling illegal gold mining on cocoa farms and struggling to rein in the spread of swollen shoot disease, will produce just 600,000 tons of cocoa in 2025/2026.

Cocoa in Ecuador is grown in agroforestry systems that support biodiversity and are crucial to preventing the spread of disease common in monoculture farming, as seen in West Africa.

These systems include growing cocoa alongside shade trees, plantains, coffee and fruit trees.

Cocoa farms in Ecuador are currently yielding an annual 800 kg per hectare, Ontaneda noted, adding the country is expected to produce more than 570,000 tons in the 2025/26 season and expects to reach 800,000 tons by the end of the decade.

Caresha Brownlee, better known by her stage name Yung Miami, has written a character statement vouching for Sean “Didd” Combs amid his sentencing that’s coming up.

Diddy is set to be sentenced on October 3 by U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian, and his lawyers have asked a US judge to impose a 14-month prison sentence on the producer and rapper after he was convicted of prostitution-related offences.

The music mogul was acquitted on the more serious charges of s3x trafficking and racketeering.

The 55-year-old star faces a maximum of 20 years in prison after he was found guilty of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. However, Diddy has pleaded not guilty and is said to be appealing his conviction.

Pleading for a lesser sentence for Diddy, Yung Miami, who dated the music mogul, wrote to the judge. She sang Diddy’s praise and told of how he helped “shape” her professionally and personally.

She stated that while she cannot speak on or defend anything that may have happened before she met Diddy, she can attest to the fact that for the 4 years she knew him, he saw a “different person than the one often portrayed”.

She said she truly believes Diddy belongs at home with his family and begged the judge to grant him freedom.

“Judge… That’s a good man,” she concluded.

NPP’s ‘Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna’ demo underway in Accra

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has kicked off its much-publicised “Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna” protest in Accra, with hundreds of supporters taking to the streets to express their anger over what they describe as harassment and injustice against party members.

The demonstration began at the Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle and is proceeding towards the headquarters of the Ghana Police Service, where the party plans to submit a petition to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

Party leaders accuse the police leadership of allowing itself to be used by the government to target and intimidate individuals associated with the opposition.

According to them, the march is aimed at drawing public attention to what they believe is a growing pattern of politically motivated arrests and investigations, stressing that the rights of their members and sympathisers are being undermined.

Security personnel have been deployed along the protest route to ensure order as the demonstration moves through key streets of the capital.

Ghanaian Citizens Fleeing as Refugees Marks “National Tragedy,” Rights Group Says

World Refugee Day

A prominent civil society organization has condemned the displacement of Ghanaians from Bawku and other northern communities as evidence of critical governance failures, marking what it calls the first time in the country’s history that citizens have sought refuge abroad.

The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has described the displacement of Ghanaians from Bawku and other northern communities into neighbouring countries as a “national tragedy” and evidence of governance failure. The organization noted that ongoing violent conflicts across three northern regions have forced some citizens to seek safety in Togo and Burkina Faso.

The development represents a dramatic reversal for Ghana, which has traditionally served as a regional haven for refugees from neighboring countries experiencing instability. Ghana has deployed soldiers to Bawku after gunmen attacked the northern town, killing three students, with analysts warning that entrenched ethnic tension in the region may fuel further violence along with the growing jihadist threat.

According to the CDM statement, violent conflicts in the Upper East, Oti, and Northern Regions have created conditions forcing citizens to abandon their homes and seek international protection. The group characterized this unprecedented exodus as undermining Ghana’s long-standing reputation for stability in West Africa.

The organization leveled harsh criticism at government security responses, arguing that constitutional obligations to protect life and property have been abandoned. They emphasized that security measures must deliver tangible safety results rather than remaining rhetorical commitments.

The conflict in Bawku is a complex dispute between the two largest ethnic groups: the majority Kusasis and minority Mamprusis, with several immediate causes triggering sporadic fighting for decades, ranging from land ownership disputes to chieftaincy conflicts.

The CDM linked current insecurity to broader institutional weaknesses, citing failures in proactive conflict management and neglect of constitutional responsibilities. They warned that without decisive intervention, the crisis could escalate further, threatening both national and regional security stability.

Traditional authorities, faith-based leaders, and civil society organizations have been urged to pressure government officials for immediate action. The rights group emphasized that citizen safety forms the foundation of national prosperity and development.

The refugee situation compounds existing challenges in Ghana’s northern regions, where more than 4,000 Burkinabes emigrated from their homeland to Ghana to seek refuge as a result of Jihadist assaults in February 2023. This creates a complex dynamic where Ghana simultaneously hosts refugees while its own citizens flee to neighboring countries.

Security experts have expressed concerns about the spillover effects of Sahelian instability, particularly given the proximity of ongoing conflicts in Burkina Faso and Mali. The Bawku area sits strategically near the Burkina Faso border, making it vulnerable to cross-border security threats.

The CDM’s statement comes amid broader criticism of government security policies and calls for comprehensive approaches to conflict resolution in northern Ghana. The organization has previously challenged various government decisions, establishing itself as a vocal critic of current administration policies.

Government officials have not immediately responded to the CDM’s accusations, though military deployments to affected areas indicate recognition of security challenges. The situation presents significant political implications as authorities balance security responses with underlying causes of communal tensions.

International observers note that Ghana’s refugee crisis reflects broader regional instability patterns, where previously stable countries face new security challenges from extremist activities and ethnic conflicts. The development marks a concerning shift in West African stability dynamics.

“We decided to air it on TV but it was difficult because a lot of channels wouldn’t take it and those who would, had a long bureaucracy,” he added.

However, according to him, everything changed after a visit to Nana Aba Anamoah’s office.

“One day we paid Nana Aba a visit in the office and told her about it, right there and then she called producers and necessary people and by the following week we were on TV. The first time OB Amponsah and I had our comedy aired on TV, which propelled our careers to where they are today, was all thanks to Nana Aba Anamoah,” he stated.

Disturbingly high levels of poisonous metals found in water, food, air in mining areas

Illegal miners are reported to be using heavy metals for their activities Illegal miners are reported to be using heavy metals for their activities

An assessment conducted jointly by Pure Earth and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has revealed high levels of poisonous metals contaminating Ghana’s environment.

The Mercury and Other Heavy Metals Impact Assessment (MIA), carried out from August 2024 to September 2025, found significant pollution from heavy metals.

Fight against galamsey undermined by political opportunism – CDM

The research, which focused on the prevalence of poisonous substances in small-scale mining areas, found high levels of mercury, arsenic, cadmium, lead, and other heavy metals.

These contaminants were discovered in the soil, water, air, crops, and fish in mining communities across the country.

The research was conducted in six regions including the Ashanti, Western, Western North, Eastern, Central, and Savannah.

The report says mercury levels in soil were highest in Konongo Zongo in the Ashanti Region, with an average of 56.4 parts per million (ppm), more than five times the safe limit for playground soil (10 ppm), and a peak level of 1,342 ppm, highlighting its severe contamination and potential health risks.

In the Western Region, air mercury levels in Wassa Kayianko averaged 1.84 µg/m³, surpassing Ghana’s permissible limit of 1 µg/m³. Peak levels reached as high as 150 µg/m³, likely due to gold smelting activities.

Additionally, tests on fish from all small-scale mining areas showed that mercury levels were within safe limits.

However, the report noted that the findings are inconclusive due to the limited sample sizes.

Other heavy metals, such as lead, were found in soil, water, fish, and food crops.

Tests conducted in Asiakwa in the Eastern Region revealed significant pollution, raising concerns about potential health risks.

Tests on fish samples showed mercury levels above safety limits, emphasising the urgent need for a health risk evaluation.

In Konongo Zongo, lead in fish reached 1.7 mg/kg, surpassing the WHO’s food safety guideline of 0.3 mg/kg.

At Akwaboso in the Central Region, fish samples contained even higher levels, up to 2.8 mg/kg.

Arsenic levels in soil notably in Konongo Zongo were found to be high levels resulting in the critical contamination of the soil.

Regarding food crops, the MIA report stated that arsenic levels exceeded safety limits in numerous samples collected from all the mining sites.

The study made several recommendations in its report, including launching a public health campaign to address the issue.

We’ll not be intimidated- Nana Boakye declares at NPP youth wing protest

0

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has declared that the party will not be intimidated by what it describes as deliberate attempts by State institutions to target and silence its members.

Speaking to JoyNews during the “Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna” protest in Accra, organised by the NPP’s National Youth Wing under Salam Mustapha, Nana B accused the police of showing clear bias in their handling of political cases.

He cited the arrest of Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe (Abronye DC), alongside activists such as Sir Obama and Fante Comedy, who were publicly handcuffed and paraded after their arrests.

According to him, similar treatment is never given to members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Why do we have different laws for NPP and different laws for NDC? That is what we are protesting against the weaponisation of State institutions against the opposition. This is deliberate, a clear orchestration against the NPP. We will not be intimidated,” he said.

On the petition to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Nana B criticised what he described as “repressive” bail conditions imposed on party members, insisting they are being used as a form of punishment.

“You arrest somebody and then impose onerous bail conditions. That is most unfortunate. We are telling the President, who claims to be an embodiment of democracy, to ensure these institutions stop the harassment. We are not going to sit down for our rights to be trampled upon,” he added.

Background

The protest was largely triggered by the arrest of Kwame Baffoe, widely known as Abronye DC, who serves as the NPP’s Bono Regional Chairman. He was detained on September 8 and charged with offensive conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, as well as publishing false news.

Beyond Abronye’s case, the demonstration also reflects mounting frustrations over what the party describes as intimidation and harassment of its members.

These include incidents involving high-profile figures such as Chairman Wontumi (Bernard Antwi-Boasiako) and a number of social media activists sympathetic to the NPP.

Protesters are demanding an end to what they view as politically motivated arrests and remands that disproportionately affect opposition members.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, began vetting aspirants for its presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.

The exercise is taking place at the party’s headquarters in Adabraka, Accra, under the supervision of a committee chaired by Dr. Addo Kufuor.

The process opened with the vetting of former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong, and is expected to conclude today with all five aspirants.

The others are former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong, and former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

This stage follows the nomination period, which began in late July and closed on August 28, with all five hopefuls successfully submitting their forms by the deadline.

The presidential primary itself is set for January 31, 2026. Should no candidate secure an outright victory, a run-off between the top two contenders will be held on February 14, 2026.

Party leadership has urged aspirants and their supporters to maintain a clean and respectful campaign as the NPP prepares for what is expected to be a highly competitive contest.
