IMF might cut Ghana some slack as fourth review begins – Prof Asuming

0

Economist, Prof. Patrick Asuming Economist, Prof. Patrick Asuming

An Economist, Prof. Patrick Asuming, has noted that even though Ghana may miss some of its targets, the International Monetary Fund may likely be lenient with the new government.

According to him, the current government has demonstrated its commitment towards fiscal discipline an act that could signal a good position to the Fund.

If Ghana is able to secure waivers, it would provide some flexibility in meeting program targets, particularly in the face of economic challenges

The Fourth review of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme has entered its second day of discussions to facilitate the disbursement of the next tranche of the $3 billion loan.

“We definitely would miss some targets. No question about that. The period for this ends on 31st December. We missed some of the performance criteria. We definitely missed the inflation target. We probably missed some of the fiscal targets in particular the deficit target. I think we also missed a couple of structural targets. But I think as a new government, probably the IMF will be willing to cut them some slack,” he told citinewsroom.com

He lauded the government’s resolve to enhance fiscal discipline to ensure expenditure rationalization.

“The government seems aggressive in trying to implement it fiscal programs. I have seen that they have passed the Public Financial Management Act,” Asuming said.

The Economist has also asked the government to maintain transparency in its negotiations on tax reforms.

“We don’t want a situation where they go and agree something with the IMF when the Ghanaian academia as well as the business community is not fully informed,” he added.

Why Blakk Rasta thinks Adum traders shouldn’t have received gifts from NAPO

Reggae musician and media personality, Blakk Rasta Reggae musician and media personality, Blakk Rasta

Reggae musician and media personality, Blakk Rasta, has expressed disappointment in the traders at Adum market for accepting gifts from Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the 2024 running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He explained that NAPO’s donation to the traders at the Adum Central Market is a ploy to win their sympathy ahead of the upcoming elections.

Speaking on his show on 3FM on April 3, 2025, Blakk Rasta said, “In fact, when the devil comes speaking to you about honesty becareful. Also, if the devil suddenly becomes kind heart, he has a plan to bury you alive. NAPO is a devil.”

“Those people at Adum market, if you accepted donations from NAPO then you have accepted gifts from the devil. Today NAPO knows that power is used over humans and not animals, and he has now become the political counselor of the nation,” he said.

He added that he in particular, would never accept any gift from the former running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“I would not accept any gift from a demon like this guy even at the point of death if NAPO’s blood is what will save me, I would suddenly become a Jehova witness.

“I am saying that if NAPO’s blood is what can save me to the point of death, I reject it in the mighty name of Jesus. After insulting Ghanaians and the very first leader of this nation, you now know that power is used on humans and not animals. Ghanaians becareful whose advice you seek because the devil can also give advice,” he added.

Background

NAPO on April 2, 2025, paid a commiserating visit to the Adum Central Market following a devastating fire that destroyed a three-story building, causing damages to properties and goods worth millions of Ghana cedis.

The politician and former lawmaker for Manhyia South, during his visit, announced a donation of GH¢100,000 from the common fund dedicated to Members of Parliament.

He also contributed GH¢50,000 and 500 bags of cement from his funds to aid in the recovery efforts.

What authorities have said about burning them, or not

0

Equipment at galamsey site File Photo Equipment at galamsey site File Photo

The fight against illegal mining has sparked widespread debates on possible measures to deter perpetrators from engaging in the devastating canker.

Actions taken by successive governments in the fight against illegal mining, also termed as ‘galamsey,’ have strongly featured arrests, prosecutions and incarceration of culprits, loss of licenses, destruction of mining sites, burning of excavators, to mention a few.

However, key stakeholders in the sector are divided over the directive on the burning of excavators and other machines used in mining, which is done as a punitive measure to curb further perpetuation of the menace.

Recently, President John Dramani Mahama directed the joint military taskforce to refrain from the burning and damaging equipment seized from illegal mining activities.

He rather urged them to confiscate the equipment from illegal miners they apprehend in forest reserves.

The erstwhile Akufo-Addo government had also directed a taskforce to burn and destroy machines of illegal miners on site; a move that attracted a barrage of criticisms from a section of the public.

Meanwhile, diverse views from industry watchers have come up in discussions seeking to address whether seized equipment should by burnt or not.

Activists for the burning of excavators

Some environmental activists have called for the burning of excavators and other equipment used for illegal mining, terming the move as being punitive enough to deter other illegal miners.

According to a report by graphiconline.com, on March 21, 2025, activists who backed the burning of excavators said the outright directive to confiscate excavators used by illegal miners without creating room for burning the equipment was not deterrent enough.

Those who raised the concerns are Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, the Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey; Daryl Bosu, Deputy National Director of A Rocha Ghana, an environmental Civil Society Organisation (CSO); and Dr Hugh Brown, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Forestry Commission.

Activists against the burning of excavators

Conversely, Nana Yaa Jantuah, a president staffer, during an interview on TV3 on April 2, 2025, urged the government to approach the fight against illegal mining cautiously.

She argued that the exercise will immensely impact the livelihood of youth in mining areas, hence, it should be handled via realistic strategies.

She argued against the burning of seized excavators, stressing that the machines could be put to better use, instead of outright damage.

Padmore Agyapong Baffour, an NPP communicator, shared similar sentiments on the burning of excavators.

On his part, the intent behind burning of excavators stems from the fear that past events will reoccur.

But he noted that should the government win the fight against galamsey, it will have to reclaim the land: “…and that is when these excavators will be needed the most. We will need them to level the land for other purposes,” he said on May 12, 2021 on Happy FM.

Kwame Asare Obeng, better known as Kwame A Plus, is the latest to have joined the conversation in a brief interaction with Adom TV on April 3, 2025.

He argued that naming and shaming public figures involved in galamsey was not enough to deter offenders, but confiscation of machines will help trace the chassis numbers to find and punish people instead of burning the equipment.

Denouement

Overall, calls have been made for broader consultations to strike a balance in the decisions to destroy machines used by illegal miners or not.

In the end, sanctions are expected to discourage people from engaging in the environmentally-degrading canker.

‘I kept a MoMo fraudster on the call for 15 minutes’ – MTN CEO recounts

Stephen Blewett, CEO of MTN Ghana Stephen Blewett, CEO of MTN Ghana

The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, has underscored the importance of vigilance in the mobile money space.

According to him, he was targeted during his early days in his role at MTN Ghana.

Just like many others, he was approached by fraudsters who attempted to scam him.

He shared that the call between himself and the fraudster lasted for about 15 minutes, all in an attempt to dissuade the individual from scamming others.

“In my first month here, I received a call from a fraudster. He claimed I had made a transfer and tried to manipulate me into believing it. I decided to keep him on the phone for about 15 minutes, hoping that by doing so, he wouldn’t scam someone else.

“Eventually, I told him I was the CEO of MTN, and he didn’t believe me. He got upset and hung up. But this experience serves as a reminder of how important it is to stay vigilant,” he was quoted as saying by citinewsroom.com on the occasion of his first anniversary as CEO.

He also emphasised the role of MTN in ensuring that customers are protected against MoMo fraud.

“We are constantly asking ourselves how we can improve. We are applying the same customer-first mentality to tackle these issues and are exploring better solutions for our users,” the CEO added.

Daniel Amartey to Bayern Munich?

0

Bayern Munich is reportedly interested in Black Stars defender Daniel Amartey as the German club seeks a temporary signing to address its injury crisis.

According to German news outlet Merkur, the six-time UEFA Champions League winners are considering offering the Ghanaian a short-term contract.

The former Leicester City defender is currently unattached and has been inactive for over a year since leaving Turkish club Besiktas.

Bayern is dealing with a severe injury crisis, with first-team players Dayot Upamecano and Alphonso Davies, as well as backup defender Hiroki Ito, all sidelined.

Other free-agent options under consideration include former PSG and Tottenham Hotspur defender Serge Aurier and ex-Napoli and AS Roma left-back Mario Rui.

However, signing a free agent outside the transfer window remains unlikely, as Bayern would need to navigate regulatory challenges.

The Bundesliga leaders are in the final stretch of the season and remain in contention for a treble.

Supreme Court gives NDC seven days to file response in EC case

By: Franklin ASARE-DONKOH

Ghana’s Apex Court, the Supreme Court (SC), has granted the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its candidates in the Okaikwei North, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, and Techiman South constituencies seven days to file responses to an election petition case involving the Electoral Commission (EC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

US Embassy to assist govt reengage Millennium Challenge Compact

0

The United States Embassy has reaffirmed its commitment to assisting Ghana in renegotiating with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) to reinstate a $190 million grant intended to support reforms in the country’s electricity distribution sector.

The grant was originally part of the $316 million Ghana Power Compact, signed by President John Dramani Mahama in 2014 to enhance efficiency in the power sector.

However, Ghana lost access to the funds in 2019 following the cancellation of a concession agreement between the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Power Distribution Services (PDS).

Earlier this year, President Mahama announced plans to reopen discussions with the MCC, citing Ghana’s struggling energy sector as the “Achilles’ heel” of the nation’s financial and economic stability.

Speaking to journalists in Accra, U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, expressed her support for Ghana’s bid to secure the reinstatement of the grant.

“The President and I have common goals on this, and we’ve had talks even during the campaign about the importance of this. He was in office when the Millennium Challenge Compact was first designed. Ghana should be a poster child for the Millennium Challenge Compact. It does govern well on behalf of its people,” Ambassador Palmer stated.

She also expressed disappointment over the cancellation of the third tranche of the grant, emphasizing the urgent need for reforms at ECG.

“I was very sad, it was right before my time, but when that tranche was cancelled, I was sad for a number of reasons. The first is that, you know, the reform of ECG was very necessary. And that was something that came up in the National Economic Dialogue—was the fact that ECG is essentially losing $2.2 billion a year, which is equivalent to or more than what you get from the IMF. So that needs to be reformed, clearly,” she stressed.

Ambassador Palmer welcomed President Mahama’s decision to prioritize a reengagement with the MCC and reiterated her commitment to helping Ghana secure the remaining funds.

“The major aim of the second compact was for the power sector to be whole and not in the red. And that hasn’t been achieved yet. And to be eligible for another compact, you have to pass the scorecard and, you know, govern well on behalf of your people.

And having had a successful previous compact. So, we need to make sure that that can happen, and then I will very strongly advocate for another compact,” she said.

The Ghana Power Compact was designed to revamp the country’s energy sector through strategic investments in power infrastructure, promoting energy efficiency, and fostering inclusive economic growth. Signed in 2014, it sought to address key inefficiencies in the sector and enhance electricity service delivery.

Black Stars’ performances against Chad, Madagascar don’t show improvement – Nii Lante Vanderpuye

0

Former sports minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has said that he is not impressed with the performances of the Black Stars against Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

He stated that even though the team won the two matches with huge scorelines, the kind of performance they displayed needs to improve going forward.

The former Member of Parliament for the Odododiodio constituency noted that the quality of play and the confidence of the players ought to be better for the team to compete for laurels.

Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV, he urged the Black Stars’ technical team and the players to avoid complacency and work harder to instill fear in their opponents with their performance.

“The two matches we have played so far don’t give me any indication that there has been an improvement in the team. Even though we won those matches comfortably, I’m looking at the quality of play. Sometimes, some coaches will say the result is what matters, especially in qualifying series like this.

“But at the end of it all, you should also know that it’s not just about qualifying, but it’s about developing, improving your performance, your play, so that when you have qualified, people will have confidence in the team. I want us to build a team that will show resilience, improvement and a team that strikes fear in any nation at all,” he said.

In the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the Black Stars defeated Chad 5-0 on March 21, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium and secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Madagascar on March 25, 2025.

After six matches played, Ghana lead Group I with 15 points, followed by Comoros with 12 points, while Madagascar lie in third position with 10 points.

Minority raises concern over U.S. tariff on Ghanaian products, calls for policy action

0

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has expressed concern over the United States’ recent imposition of a 10% tariff on Ghanaian products, warning that the move could negatively impact the country’s economy and exporters.

Addressing the issue in a press statement, the Ranking Member of the Committee on Trade, Industry, and Tourism,  Michael Okyere Baafi, stated that Ghana finds itself among other African countries affected by the tariff escalation, which was announced by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to Mr. Baafi, the U.S. cited unfair trade practices as justification for the tariff, pointing to Ghana’s 17% average tariff on U.S. imports.

He, however, noted that it remains unclear whether this policy affects Ghana’s participation in the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

Ghana is currently one of 35 Sub-Saharan African countries benefiting from AGOA, which grants duty-free access for about 6,700 products to the U.S. market.

Some of the key products covered under AGOA include textiles and clothing, motor vehicle parts, agricultural products such as nuts and yams, leather goods, and machinery.

Mr. Baafi emphasized that the newly imposed 10% tariff could significantly reduce the price competitiveness of Ghanaian exports, particularly in industries such as apparel, cocoa processing, and yam exports.

The apparel sector, which employs over 5,000 young Ghanaians, is expected to be among the hardest hit.

The Minority further criticized the government’s approach to trade and export policies, arguing that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration has failed to prioritize export growth.

The statement noted that under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the One District One Factory (1D1F) initiative helped Ghana expand its exports, including iron rods, ceramic tiles, and plastics to the ECOWAS region.

“The current government has no response to the tariff slap. It has no specialized programme or policy to support exporters, expand production, or diversify markets,” the statement read.

The Minority Caucus proposed several measures to address the situation, including:

  • Diversifying export markets by prioritizing AfCFTA and expanding manufactured exports to African countries.

  • Providing government support for exporters, including financial assistance and market intelligence to mitigate the impact of the tariffs.

  • Encouraging product diversification and value addition to reduce reliance on raw material exports.

  • Engaging in diplomatic negotiations with the U.S. government to clarify the policy’s impact on AGOA and explore possible exemptions.

  • Enhancing Ghana’s trade competitiveness by improving infrastructure and reducing production costs.

  • Ensuring policy clarity on export strategies and committing to the full implementation of the National AfCFTA Policy Framework.

The Minority Caucus urged the government to take swift action to prevent further economic losses and protect the livelihoods of exporters affected by the tariffs.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa Central in the Central Region, Kwame Asare Obeng, has stated clearly that he has no interest in any political appointment from the governing party.

His sole focus, he noted, is on the development of his constituency.

“I don’t like any appointment. My focus is solely on Gomoa Central. I don’t want anything to distract me from the work I have to do for my people,” A Plus, as he is popularly known, made this known in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show.

A Plus also recalled a conversation with President John Mahama, where he made it clear that he did not want to be a minister.

“It’s not for you to tell Mahama or anyone else to give you an appointment. I am here to serve my people in Gomoa Central.

“I told the President, ‘I don’t want to be a minister. I want to focus on my work as an MP,” he declared.

Reflecting on his upbringing in Asebu, A Plus shared that he and his siblings had seen both struggle and comfort, which gave him insight into the challenges faced by those who are less fortunate.

Nikola Jokic made history with a career-high 61 points, recording the highest-scoring triple-double in NBA history during the Denver Nuggets’ 140-139 overtime loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves at Ball Arena.

The three-time MVP also contributed 10 rebounds and 10 assists, surpassing the previous record set by his Nuggets teammate Russell Westbrook, who scored 57 points in a triple-double for the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2017.

Westbrook, who joined Denver in 2024, missed a crucial lay-up with 10 seconds left in overtime, with the Nuggets leading 139-138.

Moments later, he fouled Nickeil Alexander-Walker on a last-second three-point attempt. Alexander-Walker sank two free throws, securing a dramatic Timberwolves victory.

Minnesota played without Naz Reid and Donte DiVincenzo, who were suspended following a brawl with Detroit. The Timberwolves are now seventh in the West, while Denver sits third.

Ahoufe Patri speaks out on sex-for-roles in Ghana’s showbiz industry

0

Ghanaian actress, Priscilla Opoku Agyeman, widely known as Ahoufe Patri, has bravely opened up about the unsettling experiences she faced at the start of her career in the entertainment industry.

The actress recently shared that she was propositioned with “sex for roles” offers, a practice that unfortunately remains prevalent in some sectors of show business.

In a candid interview, Ahoufe Patri stated that at the beginning of her journey, she was approached by individuals within the industry who suggested that she compromise her values to land acting opportunities.

She recalled how some of these propositions came from people in positions of influence, making the situation even more difficult to navigate.

“The issue of sex for roles is prevalent everywhere, not just in the movie industry. I remember when I was 19-years-old, I met a producer who was interested in what I had to offer; but he insisted on getting to know me in a more personal way.

“At the time I had a boyfriend whom I was deeply in love with, and I couldn’t imagine doing something like that with another man. The producer became angry,” she said.

She added that, years later, she encountered the same producer once more, however, she had gained recognition as a prominent actress.

“Years later when I became known as Ahoufe Patri, the same producer didn’t recognise me and told me he was a big fan,” she stated.

Illegal miners should be viewed as ‘dangerous terrorists’

0

Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has condemned the activities of illegal miners, urging citizens to henceforth see them as dangerous terrorists endangering the lives of Ghanaians, myjoyonline.com has reported.

He further urged Ghanaians not to allow some individuals to make money at the detriment of the lives of citizens.

Speaking during a press briefing on April 3, 2025, he said, “We can’t allow few people to make money at the expense of millions of Ghanaians and kill us. We must now begin to see them as dangerous terrorists who are killing us.”

Armah-Kofi Buah also highlighted the alarming pollution levels in Ghana’s water bodies, stating that turbidity levels have risen between 5,000 and 12,000 – far beyond the acceptable standard of 500.

“You cannot have a country where your water systems are so polluted that the turbidity levels are 5,000 to 12,000 when it should be 500. It means we are drinking poison,” he lamented.

The minister emphasised that the government is willing to support those who wish to engage in legal and responsible small-scale mining.

“If anybody wants to do genuine small-scale mining, this government is committed to guiding them, giving them licenses, and guiding them on the path of doing small-scale mining in a more responsible and sustainable manner,” he stated.

His remarks follow growing concerns over the devastating effects of illegal mining, which has led to deforestation, water contamination. and health crises in many communities in the country.

Minority Caucus urges government to address US 10% tariffs on Ghanaian products

0

Ranking Member of the Trade, Industry, and Tourism Committee, Michael Okyere Baafi Ranking Member of the Trade, Industry, and Tourism Committee, Michael Okyere Baafi

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has raised concerns over the recent 10% tariffs imposed by the United States on Ghanaian products, calling on the government to take urgent action to mitigate the impact on local exporters.

In a statement issued by the Ranking Member of the Trade, Industry, and Tourism Committee, Michael Okyere Baafi, the Minority described the tariff escalation as a serious threat to Ghana’s trade competitiveness.

The new tariffs, announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, are reportedly in response to Ghana’s 17% average tariffs on U.S. imports.

Ghana, along with 35 other Sub-Saharan African nations, benefits from duty-free access to the U.S. market under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). However, the Minority Caucus fears that the new tariffs could undermine Ghana’s export advantages, especially if AGOA’s preferential trade terms are affected.

“The introduction of a 10% tariff on goods that previously entered the U.S. duty-free will likely reduce the price competitiveness of Ghanaian products in the U.S. market. This affects products that were already subject to standard U.S. import duties and could be further impacted if AGOA is affected by this measure,” the statement read.

The Minority emphasised that the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government had prioritised initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the One District, One Factory (1D1F) policy to mitigate trade shocks and reduce reliance on the U.S. market.

“Diversifying our product range to focus on the export of manufactured goods to other African countries was a key policy of the NPP government. Through the implementation of 1D1F, Ghana increased exports of products like iron rods, ceramic tiles, and plastics to the ECOWAS region,” the statement added.

The caucus, however, criticised the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for lacking a clear policy direction on exports.

“Unfortunately, we have not seen a clear export policy under the NDC government. Their response to this sweeping tariff from the U.S. is critical to our exporters, especially those in the apparel industry, which employs over 5,000 young people,” the Caucus noted.

The Minority Caucus also warned that the absence of a strategic response could significantly impact Ghanaian businesses, leading to job losses and economic instability. They urged the government to act swiftly to protect the country’s trade interests.

Recommendations from the Minority Caucus

In light of the current trade developments, we [Minority] propose the following measures for the government’s urgent consideration:

Diversification of Export Markets

• Prioritize the full implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to diversify export markets and reduce dependence on the U.S.

• Expand exports of manufactured products to other African countries.

• Prepare to leverage trade diversion opportunities resulting from retaliatory measures imposed by major trading partners.

Support for Exporters

• Develop targeted programs and policies to assist exporters affected by the new tariffs.

• Provide financial support, training, and market intelligence to help businesses adapt to changing trade conditions.

• Advocate for the extension or replacement of AGOA to ensure continued preferential access to the U.S. market.

Product Diversification and Value Addition

• Encourage the expansion of Ghana’s export base to reduce reliance on a limited number of commodities.

• Promote value addition to raw materials to increase export earnings, boost competitiveness, and enhance local consumption.

Negotiation and Diplomacy

• Seek clarity on the implementation of these tariffs and their potential impact on AGOA’s extension.

• Engage in diplomatic negotiations with the U.S. government to seek a reduction or removal of the tariffs.

• Highlight the negative economic implications of the tariffs and emphasise Ghana’s commitment to fair trade and sustainable development.

Enhancing Competitiveness

• Improve the efficiency and productivity of local industries to lower production costs and increase global competitiveness.

• Invest in critical infrastructure to reduce transportation costs and improve market accessibility.

Policy Clarity

The government must articulate a clear policy direction on exports and outline its response to the U.S. tariffs.

Ensure that the National AfCFTA Policy Framework and Action Plan receive adequate funding and are effectively implemented.

‘Some people who claim they’ve been called by God may be suffering from insanity’ – Expert

0

Mental health expert at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Francis Yeboah Mental health expert at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Francis Yeboah

A mental health expert at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Francis Yeboah, has warned the public against confusing symptoms of psychosis with spiritual revelations.

Speaking on Joy Prime on April 2, 2025, he explained that individuals who claim to hear from God may, in fact, be experiencing hallucinations and in need of medical attention.

Francis Yeboah pointed out that symptoms of psychosis, such as delusions, auditory hallucinations (hearing voices), and visual hallucinations (seeing things), can lead to behaviors that may be mistaken for spirituality.

“There are many people who claim that God has called them, but it’s not God, it’s insanity calling them. With auditory hallucinations, the person hears voices; with visual hallucinations, they see things. For example, they might say they see three people when, in reality, there are only two,” he said.

However, he explained that in highly religious societies like Ghana, such experiences are often mistaken for divine messages.

“People often give strange directions because we’ve made ourselves so spiritually minded that anything spiritual becomes unquestionable. When they give these directions, you might not even question their validity. But in psychiatric settings, we bring people back to reality,” he said.

Stop the funfair! You are not the first to scrap taxes – NPP’s Kokofu blasts Mahama

0

Henry Kwabena Kokofu and President John Dramani Mahama Henry Kwabena Kokofu and President John Dramani Mahama

A former Member of Parliament for Bantama, Henry Kwabena Kokofu, has characterised the removal of taxes by President John Dramani Mahama’s administration as neither new nor unprecedented.

According to him, the president is not the first Head of State to eliminate taxes, nor is it the first instance of a president removing or abolishing certain taxes.

Speaking on Peace FM on April 3, 2025, Kokofu referenced the tenure of the former Akufo-Addo-led government, which abolished certain taxes deemed burdensome and unnecessary.

He criticised Ghanaians for celebrating the removal of the E-Levy and the betting taxes, describing their reactions as excessive.

“I have seen all the newspapers reporting about the repeal of taxes by the president. In 2017, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo also removed some taxes that were burdening Ghanaians and he [Mahama] is not the first to scrap taxes.

“Akufo-Addo’s government removed a lot of taxes in the country which was more than what the incumbent government has done. I don’t see the need for the funfair that is going on. They are acting like this is unprecedented,” he criticised.

Kokofu, also a former Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), explained why the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had promised to scrap these taxes.

He stated that the revenue the former government had anticipated generating from the E-Levy did not materialise as expected.

Instead, he said it generated significantly lower revenues, failing to meet the set targets.

This shortfall, he explained, was a key reason behind the NPP’s decision to abolish the levy, had they remained in power.

“The E-Levy was reduced to 1%, and according to the records, the government initially expected to generate GH¢4.5 billion. However, by 2024, they were only receiving GH¢1.5 billion, indicating that people did not embrace it as anticipated. It wasn’t that the E-Levy caused hardships due to excessive taxation,” he explained.

He added, “Our leaders recognised that and thought it wise and appropriate to scrap it upon assuming power. Additionally, they sought to change the perception that it was a burdensome and nuisance tax. Since it wasn’t meeting its targets, there was little justification for keeping it, which is why we [NPP] decided to abolish it.”

On April 2, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama assented to a series of amended bills forwarded to his office, leading to the repeal of several key taxes, including the E-Levy, the Betting Tax, the Emissions Tax, among others.

Interior Ministry to deploy 24-hour fire brigades in markets nationwide

0

The Minister for Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, is set to roll out an initiative that will see the deployment of fire brigades who will monitor markets across the country on a 24-hour basis.

The Ministry revealed its plans to partner with the Ministry of Youth Development to release beneficiaries under the Youth Employment module who will be trained to help in fighting fire outbreaks.

Fire outbreaks have destroyed major markets in parts of the country, with the latest incident being the Blue Light section of the Kumasi Central Business District.

With the quest to reduce the fire outbreaks, Muntaka Mubarak stressed that more efforts are needed to address market fires in the country.

“The other thing that we want to do, for which we will need and seek your support, is to have fire brigades in all our markets. Here, we cannot rely on firefighters alone because their numbers will not be enough to cover all our markets. So, we are currently in talks with the Minister for Youth Development.

“The Youth Employment model employs many youths; give them to us, and we will train them in fire safety and other related areas so that they can join the fire safety officers.

“This way, we can man our markets 24/7 so that when something happens, they can start the extinguishing process since they know while they call the fire service tenders to come. This requires innovation and partnership,” he noted.

76 Arrested, 100 excavators seized

0

At least 76 persons have been arrested by a joint security team comprising the military, police and rapid response team of the Forestry Commission for mining in forest reserves over the past six weeks.

Within the same period, the swoops by the joint security team led to the confiscation of 100 excavators, three bulldozers, four pick-up vehicles and other equipment used by the illegal miners.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Forestry Commission, Dr Hugh Brown, who made this known to the Daily Graphic last Tuesday, said the special operations were carried out largely in the Offin Shelterbelt Forest Reserve in the Ashanti Region; the Afao Hills Forest Reserve, Anwhiaso South Forest Reserve, Anhwiaso East Forest Reserve, Sui River Forest Reserve, Tano Anwia Forest Reserve, all in Western North region; the Yoyo River Forest Reserve, the Boin River Forest Reserve, and the Subri River Forest Reserve in the Western Region.

Dr Brown said the 76 people who were arrested during the operations have been handed over to the police for prosecution in accordance with the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act, 2019 (Act 995), while the excavators have been put in the custody of the local assemblies within which the forest districts fell.

Obstacles

However, the Forestry Commission CEO said 40 excavators which were seized by the security team in forest reserves had gone back into the hands of the illegal miners.

“What happens is that the illegal miners remove the control board of some of the excavators, making it difficult to move the machines to low beds.

When this happens and the security team is unable to immediately move the excavators, you go back the following day and the machines are gone.

“It is in this regard that we are appealing to the President to modify the directive to the security team not to burn excavators.

The directive should be revised so that when they find it difficult to move any excavators out, they should be burnt to prevent the equipment from being taken over by the illegal miners,” he said.

Release of excavators

On Sunday, March 23, this year, the Forestry Commission and the Enchi police arrested Wisdom Amuzu and three others for mining illegally in the Boin River Forest Reserve.

The team impounded two excavators found in the forest reserve, processed them for court, and confiscated the equipment.

However, a court magistrate, Lawrence Buenor Buer, granted the suspects bail and gave an order to the Forestry Commission to allow the applicant, Wisdom Amuzu, to evacuate the excavator and other equipment from the Forest Reserve to a place of his choice.

He further directed that the evacuation should be done within three days under the supervision of the Enchi District Police Commander.

Touching on the release of the two excavators to illegal miners by the magistrate, Dr Brown said that development was a big blow to the fight against illegal mining.

He said the Forestry Commission would not rest on that issue but would seek further action.

“I have referred the matter to the legal team of the Commission and the next line of action will be taken as soon as possible,” he said.

Collective responsibility

Dr Brown stressed that given the complex nature of  galamsey, all stakeholders must resolve to play active part in weeding out the bad elements.

“The fight against illegal mining cannot only be won in the forest; everyone must play their role to save this country from this organised crime,” he stressed.

He said the Forestry Commission would do everything within its means to protect the 288 forest reserves in the country.

Government owes Zoomlion GHC1.2BN for unpaid waste management services – Minister

0

Accra, April 3, GNA – The Government owes Zoomlion Ghana Limited GHS 1.2 billion covering services provided over the last two years.

Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA), who revealed this in a media interview said the debt was of much concern to the current administration.

The Minister, however, emphasised the need for collaboration between the government and private waste management companies like Zoomlion to address Ghana’s waste management challenges.

“We are collaborating closely with Zoomlion to address waste management challenges in the country, particularly focusing on recycling plastic waste,” he said.

Mr Ibrahim said it was necessary for the government to forge robust partnerships with private waste management firms and commended Zoomlion for its state-of-the-art sanitation infrastructure.

He said Zoomlion’s substantial investments in modern solid and liquid waste treatment and recycling facilities nationwide, remained unparalleled as government did not have such infrastructure to deal with the waste (both municipal solid and liquid waste) being generated daily in the cities.

“Zoomlion’s commitment to building advanced waste management systems across Ghana remains unparalleled,” he added.

The Minister warned of a nationwide sanitation crisis should Zoomlion halt operations, recalling past practices where faecal waste was dumped directly into the sea, causing environmental and health hazards.

He indicated that Zoomlion’s liquid waste recycling plants now process sewage into compost and charcoal, aligning with a 2016 ban on sea disposal initiated by former President Dramani Mahama.

Mr Ibrahim, therefore, called for sufficient government attention to sanitation, citing a cholera outbreak in coastal regions like Cape Coast, Winneba, and Takoradi on October 24, 2023, and advocated for intensified public education on sanitation risks.

Mahama disappointed over delays in completion of GARID projects

0

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern over the potential for severe flooding in parts of Accra due to delays in the completion of the Odaw River Basin and other key projects.

The $200 million Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development Project (GARID), which was approved in 2019, is designed to improve flood risk management and solid waste management in the Odaw River basin.

It also aims to enhance access to basic infrastructure and services in low-income, flood-prone communities in the Greater Accra region.

During a visit to some flood-prone areas in Accra, President Mahama expressed disappointment that the project will not be completed before the onset of the rainy season.

“I would have thought that the contractors would take advantage of the dry season and work as quickly as possible so that we would have been ahead with these projects right now.

“But unfortunately, that hasn’t happened. And so we just have to caution citizens of Accra that there is going to be severe flooding because of the delay in these projects.”

President Mahama also urged the authorities to as much as possible, speed up their operations to alleviate destruction of property and loss of life.

“We have to do everything to alleviate the destruction of property and loss of life as much as possible. But I have charged the GARID Secretariat and the hydrology section and the ministry to pay constant attention to make sure that all the projects that have been awarded under GARID to make Accra resilient from flooding are speeded up as quickly as possible so that we can minimize the flooding.”

Minority Caucus urges government to address U.S 10% tariffs on Ghanaian products

• Highlight the negative economic implications of the tariffs and emphasize Ghana’s commitment to fair trade and sustainable development.

Ibrahim Osman ends goal drought in style with late strike for Feyenoord

0

After nine games without finding the net, Ibrahim Osman finally ended his goal drought in dramatic fashion, scoring a late goal to seal Feyenoord’s victory over Groningen on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

The youngster has had a rollercoaster start to life at Feyenoord, displaying moments of brilliance in some matches while struggling for consistency in others.

Nevertheless, he showcased his skill with a stunning strike, his third league goal of the season in 18 appearances.

With Feyenoord already leading 3-1 and all three points seemingly secured, Osman latched onto a Gijs Smal pass at the edge of the box and expertly curled the ball into the bottom left corner.

It was Osman’s first goal since January, when he scored in Feyenoord’s 4-1 victory over Rijnsburgse.

Interestingly, that goal was also set up by Gijs Smal and was the fourth of the match, mirroring his latest strike against Groningen.

The win lifted the 2023 Eredivisie champions to third in the league standings as they chase an automatic spot in the 2026 Champions League.

For Osman, the hope remains that he can continue showcasing his talent and earn an opportunity to play for his parent club, Brighton, in the upcoming season.

By Evans Worlanyo Ameamu

Keta (VR), April 3, GNA – Residents in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region are calling on Assembly members to demonstrate force by approving Mr Wisdom Seade, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee for the area.

Mr Dzilanyo Adadey, a resident of Abutsiakope, a suburb of Keta, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, emphasised the need for Assembly members to emulate the gesture of other municipal and district assemblies and successfully approve the nominee for better development.

“It has been challenging to get an MCE approved in the past, one example is what we experience during the approval of former MCE, Mr Emmanuel Gemegah. We are plead with assembly members to emulate examples of other assemblies that have already approved their MMDCE nominees,” he said.

He described Mr Seade as a philanthropist with good relationships with businesses, corporate organisations, among others and believed that his approval would mean better resetting, development, and improvement for the successful progress for Keta municipality.

He said that Mr Seade, who is also the Keta National Democratic Congress Chairman, has exhibited a high level of integrity, better personal relationships, and hard work, making him qualified to be the next MCE for Keta.

“We picked an information that some assembly members are reportedly planning to repeat the prolonged voting process that occurred during the Presiding Member (PM) election, but l think they will do the needful because having both Presiding Member

The confirmation process is scheduled to take place on Thursday, April 10, between 1400 to 1600 hours with thirty-two assembly members, comprising 22 elected and 10 government appointees, are expected to participate while Mr Seade is expected to secure two-thirds of the votes to get the nod as the next MCE.

Galamseyers must be seen as dangerous terrorists

0

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has issued a stern warning against illegal miners, commonly known as galamseyers, describing them as “dangerous terrorists” who are destroying Ghana’s environment and endangering millions of lives.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Thursday, April 3, the Minister expressed deep concern over the widespread pollution of the country’s water systems caused by illegal mining.

“We can’t allow a few people to make money at the expense of millions of Ghanaians and kill us. We must now begin to see them as dangerous terrorists who are killing us,” he stated.

Providing alarming statistics on water pollution, the Minister revealed that turbidity levels in some areas have skyrocketed to between 5,000 and 12,000, far exceeding the acceptable level of 500.

“It means we are drinking poison,” he cautioned, stressing the urgent need for decisive action to safeguard public health and the environment.

Despite his strong condemnation of illegal mining, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s support for responsible small-scale mining.

“If anybody wants to do genuine small-scale mining, this government is committed to guiding them, giving them licenses, and guiding them on the path of doing small-scale mining in a more responsible and sustainable manner,” he assured.

His remarks come amid growing concerns over the devastating impact of galamsey, which has led to polluted water sources, deforestation, and increased health risks in many communities.

The government has pledged to intensify its crackdown on illegal mining while promoting sustainable practices to protect Ghana’s natural resources.

Kwesi Pratt Questions U.S. Pact After Opoku-Agyemang’s Appointment

News Hub Creator5h

Veteran journalist and political commentator Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has voiced his concerns over the appointment of Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as Chairperson of the Ghana Armed Forces Council. Using social media as his platform, Pratt focused on Ghana’s defense policies and the nation’s military partnership with the United States.

Opoku-Agyemang’s swearing-in marks a historic moment as she becomes the first female leader of the Ghana Armed Forces Council, an advisory body responsible for supporting the President on defense matters and ensuring military efficiency. However, Pratt steered the conversation toward the long-debated defense pact between Ghana and the U.S., questioning whether the new council will reassess the agreement that grants U.S. forces access to Ghanaian military facilities.

For nearly a decade, this agreement has been a source of contention, with many Ghanaians worried about its impact on national sovereignty and security. When the pact was initially signed, large-scale protests erupted, as citizens feared it could compromise Ghana’s independence in military affairs or involve the country in external conflicts.

Pratt’s social media post specifically raised concerns about whether Ghana’s new military leadership would address the country’s role as a potential strategic outpost for U.S. operations. As Opoku-Agyemang takes on this responsibility, it remains to be seen if her tenure will bring a reassessment of the agreement. While she has pledged to strengthen Ghana’s armed forces and integrate them into the nation’s development plans, the question of whether this includes reviewing the U.S. military pact remains unanswered.

Morocco U-17 set for crucial clash against Zambia in AFCON Group A

0

The Moroccan Under-17 national team will face Zambia on Thursday, April 3, at El Bachir Stadium in Mohammedia, in a decisive Group A match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The tournament, hosted in Morocco, runs until April 19.

Both teams enter the match in top form, having secured dominant victories in their opening games—Morocco thrashed Uganda 5-0, while Zambia outclassed Tanzania 4-1.

A win for Morocco would guarantee a spot in the semi-finals before their final group-stage match against Tanzania on Sunday.

More importantly, it would also secure their qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar, as the top four teams in the tournament automatically earn a place at the global event.

This would mark another major achievement for Moroccan football, highlighting the success of youth development initiatives led by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF).

In the previous edition of the U-17 AFCON in 2023, Morocco finished as runners-up, losing to Senegal in the final.

With a strong start to this year’s campaign, coach Nabil Baha’s squad is determined to go one step further and claim the continental title.

Charterhouse finally details why Paluta’s ‘Makoma’ was omitted from ‘Popular Song of the Year’ category

Organisers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) have formally responded to complaints about the omission of King Paluta’s hit song ‘Makoma’ from this year’s ‘Popular Song of the Year’ nominations list.

In a press release sighted by GhanaWeb, they clarified that the decision to not nominate the song was based on a long-standing rule that restricts artistes from having more than one song in the same category, with only a few exceptions.

“The only exceptions to this rule apply to just a few categories, which are, Best Collaboration, Best International Collaboration, and Best Music Video categories, where multiple nominations are allowed due to the involvement of different contributors,” the statement read.

The TGMA Board further emphasised that when an artiste has two or more songs qualifying for categories that do not allow multiple entries, the board typically selects only one to be considered.

This decision according to them is based on data, including streaming numbers and airplay statistics.

In this regard, the board noted that King Paluta had two major songs in contention in the category; ‘Aseda’ and ‘Makoma’. Based on this, they had to evaluate both songs and apply the one-song-per-category rule.

The Board indicated that they relied on research, taking into consideration streaming numbers from digital platforms and radio airplay data from 175 radio stations across the country.

They emphasised that after evaluating the numbers, ‘Aseda’ emerged as the more popular song and was thus chosen for nomination in both the ‘Highlife Song of the Year’ and ‘Most Popular Song of the Year’ categories.

Another reason for applying the one-song-per-category rule

One of the reasons behind this rule, according to the organisers, is also to prevent artistes from splitting their votes across multiple songs in a single category.

The statement released by the Board acknowledged that, in previous years, this rule was relaxed on certain occasions, allowing artistes to have multiple songs nominated in the same category.

However, the current policy at the TGMAs is to strictly adhere to it.

‘We voted well!’ – Ghanaians react as E-Levy is scrapped, transactions attract zero taxes

0

The majority of Ghanaians are elated and relieved as the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) has been scrapped.

The excitement is evident, with many social media users celebrating the fact that, effective today, April 3, 2025, their mobile money transactions no longer attract any taxes.

Betting “investors” are equally overjoyed, as the 10% withholding tax on their winnings has also been repealed.

On April 2, 2025, President John Mahama signed eight tax laws into effect, including the repeal of both the E-Levy and the betting tax.

Following the presidential assent, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) directed telecommunications companies to halt the charging of the levy on transactions.

Users who made transfers in the early hours of April 3, 2025, confirmed that their transactions only incurred standard telco charges, with no E-Levy deductions.

Many Ghanaians have applauded the president for fulfilling his campaign promise and eliminating the tax.

Mubarak Wakaso hints at comeback with teasing training photo

Wakaso training at the Ajax Park Wakaso training at the Ajax Park

Mubarak Wakaso has once again sparked speculation about a potential return after sharing a teasing training photo.

The Ghanaian midfielder, known for his robust style of play, was rumored to be moving to Hearts of Oak for the second half of the Ghana Premier League season earlier this year. However, the proposed deal fell through during preliminary negotiations.

The 34-year-old, celebrated for his tireless work ethic, precise passing, and commanding presence on the field, was expected to bring valuable experience to the squad.

Reports suggest that Wakaso remains focused on pursuing opportunities abroad rather than joining the Ghana Premier League.

Since then, he has kept fans guessing about his next move, having previously hinted at a comeback in a similar fashion.

His latest post has reignited excitement, leaving supporters wondering if his return to competitive action is now on the horizon.

The veteran midfielder has struggled with injuries in recent years and has been without a club since January 2024, following his departure from the Chinese side Shenzhen FC due to persistent knee problems. His last competitive appearance was on August 23, 2023.

On the international stage, Wakaso earned 70 caps for Ghana and scored 13 goals for the four-time Africa Cup of Nations champions.

Lesotho is world’s second worst-hit country by Trump’s tariffs

0

US President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs of 50% on all imports from Lesotho, the second highest rate of any country in the world after China.

The tiny southern African country has a large trade surplus with the US, mostly from diamonds and textiles, including jeans.

Trump has announced a minimum rate of 10% on all countries’ imports to the US and additional “reciprocal tariffs” for dozens of countries, including 20 in Africa.

Other African countries hit with extra tariffs include 47% for Madagascar, 40% for Mauritius, 37% for Botswana and 30% for South Africa.

Nigerian exports will be hit too – at a rate of 14%.

Kenya, Ghana, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Senegal and Liberia were among those countries whose exports to the US will be subject to the baseline tariff of 10%.

Trump said the reciprocal tariffs were “for countries that treat us badly”.

During Wednesday’s announcement at the White House, the Republican president said that the US had been taken advantage of by “cheaters” and had been “pillaged” by foreigners.

“Our taxpayers have been ripped off for more than 50 years, but it is not going to happen any more,” Trump said.

“It’s our declaration of economic independence,” he added while holding up a chart showing a list of countries that charge higher tariffs on US goods, impose “non-tariff” barriers to US trade, or have otherwise acted in ways that US officials feel undermine American economic goals.

The US is Lesotho’s second-largest trading partner, after South Africa, accounting for around 28% of its total trade in 2022.

According to the White House, in 2024, while the US exported just $2.8m (£2.1m) worth of goods to Lesotho, it imported from the southern African country amounted $237.3m.

The 50% tariff figure appears to have been reached through US officials looking at the relationship between the trade deficit with Lesotho and the total value of goods imported from Lesotho into the US.

For Lesotho, the extra costs that the tariffs will incur for American buyers could have a big impact as the country’s US trade amounts to more than 10% of its total economy.

Lesotho’s garment factories have made jeans for iconic American brands such as Levi’s and Wrangler in recent years.

These exports were done through the African Growth and Opportunity African Act(Agoa), which allows eligible African countries to send some goods to the US without having tariffs slapped on them.

Agoa, signed into law by Bill Clinton in 2000, was intended to help African countries grow their economies and create jobs but these tariffs appear to threaten its future.

South Africa is included in the long list of countries dubbed the “worst offenders”, which also involve China, Japan and the European Union – that now face higher US rates – payback for unfair trade policies, Trump said.

“They have got some bad things going on in South Africa. You know, we are paying them billions of dollars, and we cut the funding because a lot of bad things are happening in South Africa,” he said, before going on to name other countries.

South Africa’s biggest export to the US is platinum, which may be exempted from the import tax. But its second biggest export – cars – will be hit hard.

In a statement, the South African presidency condemned the new tariffs as “punitive”, saying they could “serve as a barrier to trade and shared prosperity”.

The White House released a list of roughly 100 countries and the tariff rates that the Us would impose on what Trump dubbed “liberation day” for the American people.

Trump added 34% of so-called reciprocal tariffs to existing 20% duties on all Chinese imports to the US, making it the highest rate globally.

In addition, Trump imposed a 25% tariff on all foreign-made cars.

The US is the second biggest market for south Africans cars after Germany.

The US is expected to start charging the 10% tariffs on 5 April, with the higher duties for certain nations starting on 9 April.

African countries like South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya have long had trade agreements with the US, and the new tariffs could significantly affect existing economic ties.

The tariffs come as many African countries are already grappling with the effects of US foreign aid cuts, which provided health and humanitarian assistance to vulnerable countries.

Trump announced the aid freeze on his first day in office in January as part of a review into the US government spending.

US-South Africa relations have deteriorated sharply since Trump returned to power.

Trump and his ally, South-Africa born Elon Musk, have singled out South Africa, in particular criticising it over its land reform policies that they say discriminate against white farmers.

Economists say the new tariffs mark a clear departure from the more open trade policies that have previously defined US-Africa relations.

At the launch event, Managing Director of Enterprise Life, Jacqueline Benyi, highlighted the critical role education plays in shaping futures and the financial strains that often accompany it. “Education is one of the most powerful investments we can make. ‘6.9% women MMDCEs appointments unacceptable’

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

The Ghana Chapter of the UNOWAS Working Group on Women, Youth, Peace, and Security (UNOWAS WGWYPS) has expressed concern about what it described as “alarming underrepresentation of women in the nominations and appointments of Municipal, Metropolitan, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the country.”

It said the current appointment of the MMDCEs by President John Dramani Mahama shows gender imbalance, which brings down progress toward gender equity in governance.

“The current situation of women constituting less than 6.9% of appointed MMDCEs is unacceptable. Despite ongoing advocacy and the government’s stated commitment to affirmative action, the current appointments reveal a troubling gender imbalance that undermines progress toward gender equity in governance, particularly under the Mahama administration,” the UNOWAS-Ghana stated.

UNOWAS-Ghana reacted to the statement released by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, on March 26, 2025, which listed 72 nominees across various regions, with only 5 of these nominees being women.

It said the underrepresentation of women in governance threatens democratic foundations and developmental goals.

This represents a mere 6.9% of total nominations and highlights systemic barriers that inhibit women’s participation in decision-making roles, the statement added.

Below is a breakdown of female representation across regions:

President Mahama Does The Unexpected As He Storms Circle With Constructors To Distill Odaw River

News Hub Creator3h

President John Dramani Mahama has once again demonstrated his commitment to rebuilding the nation as he led a desilting exercise at the heavily polluted Odaw River at Circle, Accra. Accompanied by Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings and a team of construction workers, the president supervised the dredging of the river to clear waste and silt that have contributed to severe flooding in the capital.

The Odaw River, which has been a major cause of floods in Accra, has long been neglected, with residents and traders at Circle bearing the brunt of its overflow during heavy rains. The sight of President Mahama at the scene was unexpected, as he personally monitored the work being done to restore the river’s flow.

Since assuming office, President Mahama has been actively working to reset the country, fulfilling his promise to improve infrastructure, sanitation, and overall governance. His hands-on approach to national issues has been evident in his swift actions to tackle longstanding problems, including waste management and urban development.

The desilting of the Odaw River aligns with his broader agenda of addressing environmental challenges and improving living conditions in the country. The presence of construction workers and heavy-duty machines such as excavators at the site signaled a serious effort to bring lasting solutions to the flooding problem that has plagued Accra for years.

Residents and traders at Circle expressed optimism about the exercise, hoping it would bring much-needed relief. Many have commended President Mahama for staying true to his vision of resetting the nation and ensuring that critical problems are addressed without delay.

Dubik Mahama: Former ECG boss demands thorough probe into missing containers scandal

0

The Former Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has expressed frustration over the handling of the missing ECG containers controversy, calling for a more rigorous and transparent investigation into the matter.

His comments follow concerns raised by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, regarding the disappearance of over 1,350 ECG containers from Tema Harbour. According to the minister, an investigative committee uncovered significant procurement breaches spanning several years.

Providing an update, Mr Jinapor revealed that security operatives had traced 40 of the missing containers to a warehouse in Pong-Tamale, a community in the Savelugu-Nanton District of the Northern Region.

“The briefing I got this morning is that National Security and law enforcement agencies have already traced about 40 of them to a particular terminal or warehouse in Pong, which belongs to an Indian man,” he disclosed. “They’ve confiscated all 40 and are moving them to a secured location.”

Gaps in the investigation

Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight programme on April 2, Mahama criticised the investigative process, stating that the committee had failed to engage key figures, including himself.

“There are inconsistencies in the situation, and inconsistencies do not bring clarity. Let’s all assist in bringing clarity and closure to this matter,” he urged, calling on all stakeholders to support the Energy Minister in uncovering the truth.

Mahama stressed the need for a forensic audit to accurately determine the whereabouts of the containers. He also rejected the claim that the containers were missing, instead suggesting that they had been “misplaced.”

According to Mahama, some of the containers were auctioned off by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) due to prolonged overstay. He recalled that before leaving office, ECG had raised concerns about these auctions but received no response from the GRA.

Mahama called for greater transparency in the probe, emphasising that the issue should not be clouded by misinformation.

“The fact remains that containers do not just disappear; they are either misplaced or redirected,” he stated.

He also questioned contradictions in the investigative report, pointing out that some contracts mentioned were not signed during his tenure.

The former ECG boss assured his full cooperation with any forensic audit initiated by the Energy Minister, stating that his intent was not to evade the matter but to provide clarity.

Responding to claims that GH₵5 million was allocated to clear the containers, Mahama strongly rejected suggestions that the funds were made available directly to him.

“When you talk about the GHS 5 million, who said it was made available to me?” he questioned, urging for a clearer understanding of the full investigative report.

He explained that discussions on the matter were still ongoing with the Ministry of Finance at the time of his departure from ECG.

Mahama insisted that a thorough investigation must include a full review of all terminals at the port, pointing to the existence of multiple terminals, including Atlas.

He dismissed any claims of being involved in a syndicate, questioning, “What would be my aim in being part of a syndicate to take containers out?”
