The Deputy Minister-Designate for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Sampson Ahi, has promised to oversee the establishment of a cocoa processing company in the Western North region by the end of his tenure.
Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Ahi emphasised the importance of industrialisation in driving economic growth and job creation, particularly in Agric enclaves.
The move, according to him, aligns with the government’s broader agenda to boost local production, add value to raw materials, and create employment opportunities.
“As captured in the NDC manifesto, we will embark on industralisation. I will be happy to see that by the end of my tenure, we will have a cocoa processing company so that we will have cocoa beans processed. I will also look at other areas where they have a competitive advantage with regards to farm produce so that many factories can be established for many of the farm produce to be processed,” he stated.
P.K. Sarpong, a popular writer for the opposition NPP, has told President John Mahama to go ahead and change the name of Kotoka International Airport and stop the theatrics.
P.K. Sarpong made this comments in a post shared on his Facebook page on 24th February, 2025. He wrote:
“Dear President John Dramani Mahama!
End this cantata show. We are not kids here. Stop hiding behind DemocracyHub, a group that is affiliated to your party to do this hatchet job for you.
The CPP of Nkrumah of blessed memory is an extinct creature. It died with Nkrumah. In fact, the NDC which you lead, was the beneficiary of the death of the CPP. Don’t we all know that the NDC is peopled mostly by CPP elements? Even you and your family members were CPP.
Mr. President, if you want to change the name of Kotoka International Airport, do so and stop these theatrics.”
According to P.K. Sarpong, It is the intention of John Mahama to remove the name of Kotoka from the Kotoka International Airport and replace it with Kwame Nkrumah’s name. He asked him to go ahead and do it and let us have our peace of mind.
“Stop sponsoring these your party elements on this needless issue. What would the name change do for us as a country? Would it bring your promised 24-hour economy into fruition?
Instead of concentrating on the numerous pledges you made to us prior to the 2024 elections, you are rather embarking on this needless name changing campaign.
Kotoka is from the Volta Region, and the airport was named after him for pretty good reasons. If you find those reasons to be baseless, Sir, scrap them and do what flipping well pleases you and your party members. ” P.K. Sarpong added.
He asked John Mahama not to play with our intelligence. He added that Ghanaians can read between the lines. Change the name right away to appease your desires.
“If the Ga and Dangbe people have no issues with the name change from a foreigner to another foreigner, who are we to oppose it?
Sir, the comedy must end. No need sponsoring these people to go to the Supreme Court over this. You are the president and can do whatever you want with the power you have, please. We are simply tired of these populist agenda from your stables!” P.K. Sarpong concluded.
Sampson Ahi, the deputy minister-designate for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry
Sampson Ahi, the deputy minister-designate for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, has denied claims that the eight-year Akufo-Addo administration built roads in the Bodi District.
His comments address claims made by Patrick Boamah, the MP for Okaikwei Central, claiming the NPP government built roads in the region.
“A big false, you didn’t even add one inch of tarred road in 8 years in Bodi district,” Ahi stated.
Speaking during his vetting in Parliament on Monday, February 24, Sampson Ahi urged his detractors to present proof, saying he was prepared to take back his claim if it turned out to be false.
“If the Hon. Member [Patrick Boamah] can show me where they tarred the road, I will be happy to retract my statement,” Ahi added.

Sixteen individuals in Kumasi have been arrested and put before court by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) for violating environmental safety bye-laws.
The arrest and prosecution follow a recent enforcement sweep in renewed efforts by the assembly to tackle rampant insanitary conditions and activities in the Ashanti Regional capital.
Head of the Environmental Health Unit at the KMA, Kwaku Poku, speaking to Luv FM, disclosed the offenders who are also residents in the central business district were subjected to a wide array of violations.
Kumasi generates approximately 2,000 tons of solid waste daily, much of which ends up in drains and open spaces due to inadequate disposal practices.
The registered violations of the arrested offenders ranged from residents allowing household filth to flow into public drains, keeping weedy and unkempt environments, and indiscriminate dumping of waste.
Head of the Environmental Health Unit at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Kwaku Poku, disclosed that offenders have been arraigned before court for appropriate punishments.
The court imposed various fines on the violators.
“We have arrested 16 people who flouted environmental safety bye-laws,” he stated. “We are rightly enforcing the laws, arresting those who have flouted various environmental and sanitation regulations. Some had homes in the Central Business District, and they have allowed their filth to flow into the public drains, others had dumped indiscriminately.
“They were arraigned before court for failing to make an appearance. In terms of enforcement, I believe we have made strides towards it, I assumed my role barely three months ago, and I am prepared to tackle the filth in the city,” said Mr. Poku.
The enforcement sweep in Kumasi also affected food production sites with shirked hygiene standards, including the Kumasi Abattoir.
The KMA and Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) taskforce inspected a viral ice kenkey factory and shut down the facility due to unsanitary conditions.
The environmental unit head, Kwaku Poku is counting on collaborative effort to effectively combat the menace troubling the Kumasi Metropolis.
“We are in talks with Kumasi Abattoir to arrest stray cattle on our streets. I led the team of KMA and FDA staff to the ice kenkey factory at Adehy3 Market and asked them to cease operation. We have closed the facility.
“We have a weak supervision regime when it comes to policing food-producing facilities and markets. We are collaborating with the FDA to strategize on how to routinely monitor our markets and rid them of filth,” he said.

He claims that thirty hectares, or more than forty-four forest reserves, had been destroyed.
In the Ashanti area, he stated measures are being done to secure the green field during a tour of the Offin Shelter Belt at Anwiafutu to observe the destruction of the forest.
Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti regional minister, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah and the regional Security Council, visited the Offin Shelter Belt in Anwiafutu in the Atwima Mponua District.
Speaking to reporters on the scene, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah compared the illegal miners’ destruction of forest reserves to 7,500 football fields.
He underlined that the fight against galamsey will not be a one-night stand since those who commit the crime will be held accountable.
“This goes to the police officers, this government is strongly behind you to do your job and make sure that you bring perpetrators who are killing us to book without fear nor favor,” he is quoted by myjoyonline.com as saying while tasking the police.
Joseph Bukari Nikpe, Minister of Transport, has assured the Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) of the government’s commitment to ensuring that shipping lines do not relocate from Ghana’s ports.
He said some shipping companies had raised concerns about Act 1122 of 2024, stating that the law positioned the GSA as both a regulator and an asset manager, leading to bureaucratic challenges that increased the cost of doing business at the ports.
The minister gave the assurance on Monday when he paid his first official visit to the GSA in Accra, to familiarise himself with their operations, listen to their concerns and share his vision with them.
He mentioned President John Mahama’s pledge during the electioneering period to reduce the cost of doing business at Ghana’s ports by revising existing laws.
Addressing these concerns, he said, could persuade shipping lines to reconsider their decisions to exit Ghana and pledged to work closely with the Authority to streamline operations and eliminate bureaucratic hurdles that deter business.
“The threat of shipping lines relocating is real. We must act ahead of time to create an environment that encourages them to stay. My presence here today is to listen to your concerns and assure you of our commitment to working together to protect the interests of shippers and shipowners,” he said.
The minister said with over 80 per cent of global trade being done by sea, Ghana must create a business-friendly environment to attract and retain international trade partners.
He assured the GSA that the Ministry would support the implementation of the revised Act 1122 of 2024, which strengthens the Authority’s regulatory role.
He added that the government remained committed to fulfilling its promise of reducing the cost of doing business at Ghana’s ports by reviewing taxes, duties, and levies to create a more competitive shipping environment.
The Minister called for enhanced collaboration between the GSA and the Ministry to ensure Ghana’s ports remained attractive to business.
He stressed the importance of addressing inefficiencies and implementing policies that aligned with the government’s “24-hour economy” agenda.
He urged the GSA’s management and staff to support the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and work collectively to transform Ghana’s shipping industry into a hub for trade in the sub-region.
“Next time we visit you, the story of people trying or thinking to leave our seaports will not come up. Instead, we should be talking about new investments and increased trade activity in Ghana,” he said.
Professor Ransford Gyampo, CEO of the GSA, welcomed the minister’s visit, stating that it was long-awaited and reassuring.
He mentioned the Authority’s role in protecting the interests of shippers and outlined the historical background of the GSA, which was established in 1974 to counter unfair pricing practices by liner conferences.
Prof. Gyampo said the 2024 revision of the GSA Act expanded its role to regulate commercial activities of shippers and shipping service providers in the shipment, storage and delivery of international trade cargo by sea, air and land.
However, he noted that some shipping lines had expressed concerns over the Authority’s regulatory oversight, particularly in approving charges.
The CEO further revealed that some shipping lines owed the GSA outstanding fees, an issue that had been raised at the Public Accounts Committee.
He assured the Minister that under the government’s “Reset Ghana Agenda,” the GSA would effectively regulate commercial shipping activities to ensure fair pricing and efficiency.
Prof. Gyampo reiterated the GSA’s commitment to working with the Ministry to enhance Ghana’s competitiveness in the global shipping industry and to retain shipping lines in the country.

The Council of State’s chairman, Edward Doe Adjaho, has urged the council’s members to keep their pledge to advise President John Dramani Mahama on matters pertaining to the nation’s growth.
Adjaho reiterated the Council’s mandate, which is supported by Article 89 of the 1992 Constitution, emphasizing the necessity of offering wise counsel and suggestions in the interest of the country.
The former Speaker of Parliament urged the members to act in the nation’s best interests rather than those of the political elite.
He was speaking at an orientation for the Council on Monday February 24, where he called on the members to play a role that serves the country and not the interest of the political elite.
“Let us endeavour to put Ghana first, upholding the law and ensuring genuine care for people must be paramount in our deliberations when we give advice to the president of the republic. We must speak the truth to those we advise.
“Engage leadership and the people, connect with policy decisions to tackle the challenges facing our democracy. It is the surest way our deliberations at all times can benefit both the government and the Ghanaian public.”
Ghana achieves moderate level of labour productivity growth
The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) report indicated that Ghana has achieved a moderate level of labour productivity growth, with accelerated growth between 2010 and 2016 following the beginning of the extraction of oil.
The country recorded annual labour productivity that is higher than the average for lower–middle-income countries but lower than that of a higher-middle-income country.
Professor William Baah Boateng from the University of Ghana presented the findings of the report on the topic “Productivity, Employment and Growth” in Accra.
The report was conducted in collaboration with the GSS, with support from the International Labour Organisation and other development partners.
The report showed that the overall impact on total productivity had been limited, as growth was concentrated in a few sectors, such as mining, rather than spreading across the broader economy.
A closer look at sectoral trends reveals significant variations in the report.
It said while productivity had increased in areas such as household agriculture and trade, these sectors also saw job losses, as workers move into lower-productivity roles in construction and urban services.
The mining sector has achieved high productivity growth but has not generated substantial job opportunities.
In contrast, commercial agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and utilities have recorded both productivity gains and job creation.
The report therefore highlighted the need for investment in other sub-sectors that could generate productivity, decent employment growth and technological modernisation.
The report highlighted the key sectors requiring intensified investments in labour and capital due to their contribution to both economic growth and employment creation over the period.
They included commercial agriculture, transportation and utilities, and manufacturing.
The findings further revealed that average earnings in Ghana had increased at a slower pace than productivity growth, and the gap was widening over time.
Sub-sectors with the highest earnings growth relative to productivity include utilities, construction, and tourism.
The report revealed that earnings growth had been slower relative to productivity in the more informal sectors, such as household agriculture and trade and repair services.
Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, the Government Statistician said, “We are gathered here in pursuance of the new focus that we have adopted as a service.
“And this new focus has to do with not presenting statistical outputs but presenting statistics in a manner that is policy relevant.”
He said, “Labour productivity measures how efficiently workers produce goods and services over a specific period.
“Total productivity measures how efficiently multiple inputs, like labour, capital, and materials, are used together to produce output and drive growth.”
Dr Nii Moi Thompson, Chairman, of the National Development Planning Commission, commended GSS for producing current quality data over the past few years.
He said the citizens must work efficiently in the utilisation of the natural resources, adding that without efficiency productivity would be low.
Dr Thompson said the Commission’s research agenda was to reconceptualise output, employment and earnings growths to create jobs for the country.
Ghana Football Association President, Kurt Okraku has sued journalist Atta Poku and Sompa TV/FM for GH₵30 million over alleged defamatory claims, including fund misappropriation and mistreatment of Daniel Amartey.
According to ghanasoccernet, the lawsuit alleges that Poku, who has a significant following, along with the media organization, made defamatory and libelous remarks about him during their sports broadcasts on November 18 and November 28, 2024.
In a statement of claim submitted to the High Court, Okraku asserts that the defendants deliberately spread false allegations with the intent to tarnish his reputation and subject him to public ridicule.
The accusations include claims of misappropriating funds meant for Black Stars players, mistreating defender Daniel Amartey, and purchasing buses for Division One League clubs.
Okraku’s legal team alleges that during a broadcast on November 18, 2024, Collins Atta Poku alleged that Okraku dishonestly deducted $200 from the $3,000 allocated to each Black Stars player by former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo ahead of their departure for the last AFCON tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.
The suit also references statements made by Poku, claiming that this deduction led to a dispute between Okraku and Amartey, which ultimately resulted in the defender being dropped from the national team despite his inactivity.
The GFA president’s lawyers are firing back at the claims made against him, calling them outright lies designed to destroy his reputation. They argue that these statements paint Okraku as corrupt, vindictive, and unfit to lead the Ghana Football Association.
According to the statement of claim, as cited by ghanasoccernet, Okraku’s reputation has taken a serious hit, both personally and professionally and as such has suffered irreparable harm and wants the court to step in.
Okraku is seeking GH₵30 million in damages, a public apology, and a court order to stop the defendants from spreading more false information. The proposed apology would need to be aired on the same platforms as the original claims, for three consecutive days, with equal prominence.
Okraku’s team is also pushing for a perpetual injunction to prevent further defamatory statements.

Some constituency executives at the press conference
New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency executives at Dome Kwabenya have blamed the former Member of Parliament of the area, Sarah Adwoa Safo, for the party’s defeat in the December 7 parliamentary elections.
At a recent press conference, Robert Osei Bonsu, the Constituency Chairman,
noted that her refusal to campaign and her prolonged absence from parliamentary duties contributed significantly to the party’s poor performance in the 2024 elections.
“At all times, Adwoa Safo has received support from key figures in the party. In 2012, Prof. Mike Oquaye printed thousands of copies of his achievements and led house-to-house campaigns for her. In 2016, Amb. Mike Oquaye Jnr personally ensured that she had the needed support at the constituency collation centre. Yet, in 2024, she refused to be part of the campaign process,” he noted.
The group lamented that her disengagement from constituency activities, her absence from parliamentary duties, and her failure to support party efforts ahead of the elections were deliberate acts of sabotage.
“Adwoa did not engage herself in any campaign activity of the party in the constituency before and after she lost the parliamentary primaries in 2024. She was absent throughout the campaign period. Several attempts to involve her proved futile. She refused to return calls from the P.C. or reconciliation attempts by the Chief of Staff Auntie Frema Opare, Adelaide Ahwireng (Maa Fio), Gabby Okyere Darko, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Hon. Irene Naa Torshie among others. She rather spent her time in Ashanti Region and other constituencies in Greater Accra like Trobu and Adenta,” he explained.
The constituency executives further accused the former MP of undermining the party’s candidate in the 2024 elections.
According to them, she distributed campaign resources meant for the NPP to the NDC parliamentary candidate and was later seen jubilating with the opposition after the elections.
“When Irene Naa Toshie Addo gave her fabrics and cash to aide the NPP campaign in the constituency, she gave them to the NDC Parliamentary Candidate in Dome Kwabenya. While we were in heated dispute with the NDC in the election results, our MP was seen jubilating with the NDC candidate.
“The latter had gone to that church to celebrate her victory at some churches in the constituency. Yet this same person will not pick up calls from our P.C. let alone invite him to her church. This clearly showed that Hon. Safo was deliberately working against the NPP preferred candidate, Amb. Michael Oquaye Jnr. No wonder the now Member of Parliament was invited to the Kristo Asafo Church sponsored programme and captured exchanging pleasantries with Hon. Sarfo at a time when our party was in a dilemma over the collated results of Dome Kwabenya Constituency,” he indicated.
He dismissed claims by some youth groups that the NPP’s collapse in Dome Kwabenya was due to poor leadership at the constituency level.
Defending the Constituency Executive Committee (CEC), they argued that it managed affairs effectively in Adwoa Safo’s absence.
They reaffirmed their commitment to the party, calling for unity and an honest assessment of the factors that led to the NPP’s loss in Dome Kwabenya.
“We remain committed to working with all to advance the course of the party. We are hopeful that NPP will bounce back again and DKC will surely recapture its temporal lost glory. This we hope to do so through an all hands-on deck approach,” he added.

Media personality and entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Zeiga
Media personality and entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Zeiga, has expressed his views on how the Ghana Music Awards USA is gaining global publicity.
In a discussion on United Showbiz on February 22, 2025, Zeiga noted that the publicity around the event is making it more popular than the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).
He explained that in the next 10 years, the GMA awards would become even more popular if organisers continued with their hard work.
“It’s not easy to organise awards outside your country and still get people embracing it anytime the event is held. This means you are doing something good and right. Over the past three years, the publicity around Ghana Music Awards USA has become more than the TGMA itself in this country.
“Last year, I didn’t hear any publicity about the TGMA, only for us to get there and notice the place was filled. If you look at the expensive cost of publicity, it means they are doing very well. In the next ten years, they wouldn’t worry themselves with publicity because people will take flights from Ghana only to go watch the awards and return,” he said.
Frimpong Zeiga further called for a strong and healthy awards competition in the country, which would break the monopoly the TGMAs enjoy.
“I would prefer we have another strong awards scheme like the Ghana Music Awards USA to compete with the TGMAs. The only people who can do that to create that competition are the organisers of the Ghana Music Awards USA. I would have wished there was an offshoot in this country because they don’t joke with everything they touch,” he added.
Thomas Nyarko Ampem, Deputy finance minister-designate
Thomas Nyarko Ampem, Deputy finance minister-designate, says given the dwindling external aid from major donors to Ghana, saying; “It’s about time we plan our lives without aid”.
He referred to the recent cancellation of funding support from the United States of America through USAID, which would create a funding gap of $156 million for Ghana this year.
Answering questions during his vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, Ampem said he would support the substantive sector minister to leverage digital technology systems to rake in revenue for the state.
The nominee pledged to leverage the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) platform to prevent procurement breaches and, therefore, would support the sector minister to help the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to control expenditure and improve transparency and accountability.
The GIFMIS platform is a software system that helps the government manage public finances in Ghana.
The nominee said he would support the sector minister to increase the tax revenue to GDP ratio from 13.8% to 18% and bring down inflation from 23% to 8 per cent plus two or minus two.
The nominee expressed his commitment to support the sector minister to implement key indicators spelt out in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.
Ampem said he would support the sector minister to leverage electronic digital technology to aid the various Assemblies to collect market tolls efficiently.
On the 24-hour economy policy, the nominee said private companies that would be enrolled on the policy would receive a reduction in electricity tariffs when working during the night.
The Black Queens scheduled friendly match against Raja Casablanca Athletic Women has been called off due to “unforeseen circumstances.” The game was part of their preparations during their tour in Morocco.
Ghana’s women’s national team suffered a last-minute defeat against Morocco on Friday, February 21, 2025, extending their winless run since their 3-1 victory over Namibia in December 2023.
The match against Raja Athletic was meant to provide an opportunity for the team to regain momentum and for newly appointed head coach, Kim Björkegren, to further assess his squad.
However, just minutes before kickoff, the team’s official social media pages confirmed the cancellation, citing circumstances beyond their control.
Currently ranked 66th in the world and fifth in Africa, the Black Queens are eager to bounce back and put on a strong performance at the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Having last competed in the tournament in 2018 and missing the previous edition in Morocco, these friendly matches were intended to help them get back on track for a successful campaign.

Media personality, DJ Slim, has responded to Article Wan’s recent comments about the challenges of consistently producing hit songs.
One would recall that Article Wan recently stated that having constant hit songs can stifle an artist’s creativity due to the pressure it creates.
He mentioned that periods without hits allow artistes to relax, reflect, and refine their craft.
However, DJ Slim has disagreed with this assertion, citing examples of Ghanaian musicians like Shatta Wale, Sarkodie, and Stonebwoy, who have consistently delivered hit songs over the years.
Speaking on his show, DJ Slim referenced Shatta Wale’s successful years between 2015 and 2018, when the dancehall artiste released several hit songs every year.
“If not for anybody, I can reference Sarkodie, Shatta Wale, and Stonebwoy. These people have been having back-to-back hit songs for years. I want Article Wan to look at his godfather Shatta Wale during the 2015-18 era, when the man was dropping hit songs like crazy.
“He can even go into the shower and compose a hit song. It was consistent for years. There were years Wale would drop 13 bangers. How many months do we even have in a year?” he queried.
While DJ Slim agreed that an artiste’s creative ability can sometimes be ‘shaky,’ especially during troubled times, he argued that consistent hit songs are achievable through hard work and discipline.
“I’ve seen interviews of big superstars where they say that sometimes when they are on stage, their next venue is the studio. So, contrary to what Article Wan says, I believe it’s hard work,” he stated.

Agnes Adoma, the wife of Isaac Obeng, popularly known as Kasongo, has responded to critics who mocked their marriage after their pre-wedding photos went viral.
While some social media users focused on their love story, others cruelly labeled Kasongo as “ugly” and ridiculed various aspects of their union, including Agnes’s wedding ring.
In a recent interview, Agnes set the record straight regarding the cost of her wedding ring, shutting down claims that it was cheap. She disclosed that her husband recently upgraded her ring, proving his commitment to her.
According to her, the new ring cost GH₵1,500, contrary to the false reports suggesting otherwise. She confidently asked critics to stop spreading misinformation about the value of her jewellery, emphasizing that price does not determine the strength of their love.
Meanwhile, Kasongo also addressed the mockery surrounding his looks, making bold claims about his appearance. He insisted that he is far more handsome than popular Ghanaian celebrities Lilwin and Patapaa, both of whom have also been subjected to public scrutiny over their looks. He stated that those who call him “ugly” should first compare him to these celebrities before making such remarks.
Despite the criticism, the couple appears unbothered, standing firm in their love and proving that happiness in marriage is beyond physical appearances.

National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Henry Nana Boakye
Lawyers for the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly referred to as Nana B, have issued a formal demand for a retraction and apology from the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) following a recent publication on the alleged ghost names scandal at the National Service Authority (NSA).
In a letter addressed to MFWA on Monday, February 24, 2025, Nana B’s legal representatives, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah & Partners, argued that the report falsely linked their client to management decisions at the National Service Authority (NSA), formerly the National Service Scheme (NSS), from 2017 to 2024.
They emphasised that their client only served as Deputy Executive Director of the NSS between January 2017 and September 2018, when he resigned after being elected National Youth Organiser of the NPP.
“Our client instructs us that sometime in February 2025 you aired on TV3, a purported investigative story titled ‘NSS Scandal, the Inside Story,’ which story has been republished and discussed on several other media platforms.
“While our client is resolute that no wrong was done by the officers of the NSA over the past eight (8) years, we have his instructions to bring to your notice that he was Deputy Executive Director between January 2017 and September 2018, when he resigned after being elected the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP),” it said.
Consequently, the lawyers demanded that within seven days, the MFWA retracts the allegations and issue an apology.
“We have our client’s instructions to demand from you and we hereby do, that within seven (7) days of receipt of this letter, you retract and/or cause to be retracted, the aforementioned story as published on TV3.
“We also have our client’s instructions to demand that you issue an apology for the false publication within seven (7) days of receipt of this letter to be published in the same manner as the aforementioned false allegations were published,” it added.
They warned that failure to comply with these demands would lead to further legal action.

“At long last, the battle has ended! And Ghana, your beloved country, is free forever!”—These historic words, spoken by Dr. Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah on March 6, 1957, marked the dawn of Ghana’s independence.
They serve as a powerful reminder of the nation’s journey from colonial rule to sovereignty, from oppression to self-determination.
Ghana was the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence, igniting a wave of liberation movements across the continent.
A Night of Freedom: The Road to Independence
Sixty-eight years ago, on the night of March 6, 1957, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah stood before a massive crowd at the Old Polo Grounds in Accra, a place once reserved for British colonists. With passion and conviction, he declared:
“Ghana, your beloved country, is free forever!”
“We have awakened. We shall no longer go back to sleep anymore. Today, from now on, there is a new Africa in the world!”
At the stroke of midnight, the Union Jack was lowered, and in its place, Ghana’s new national flag was hoisted—a powerful symbol of freedom. The flag’s colors carried deep meaning:
Red represented the blood shed for independence.
Yellow symbolized the nation’s wealth in gold.
Green signified Ghana’s rich natural resources.
At the center, a black star paid tribute to pan-African activist Marcus Garvey and his Black Star Line, symbolizing African unity and empowerment.
Celebrating Independence Day Through the Years
Since 1957, Ghana’s Independence Day has been marked annually on March 6 with parades, cultural displays, and speeches from national leaders.
The heart of the celebrations has traditionally been Accra’s Black Star Square, also known as Independence Square, where schoolchildren, security forces, and civil service groups participate in a grand march-past.
Cities across the country also host concerts, festivals, and community gatherings, reinforcing national pride and unity.
Decentralizing the Celebration: A New Tradition
For many years, Independence Day was exclusively celebrated in Accra. However, in 2017, President Nana Akufo-Addo introduced a rotational hosting policy, moving the national celebration to different regions annually.
The objectives of this policy included:
Promoting national unity by allowing different regions to feel included in the national event.
Driving local development through increased tourism and business opportunities.
Showcasing the unique culture and achievements of each host region.
The Parade: A Symbol of Discipline and Patriotism
A major highlight of Independence Day is the parade, which features schoolchildren, security forces, and civil service groups marching in unison.
Dressed in colorful uniforms and carrying banners, participants symbolize discipline, unity, and patriotism—core values that reinforce national pride.
The Cost of Independence Day Celebrations
Over the years, Ghana’s Independence Day celebrations have incurred significant expenses. The 50th anniversary in 2007 (Ghana@50) cost approximately $20 million, while in recent years, annual celebrations have ranged between GHC16.5 million and GHC15 million.
Mahama’s Decision to Scale Down the 2025 Celebrations
Amid economic challenges, President John Dramani Mahama has announced a change in the 2025 Independence Day celebrations. To cut costs, he has suspended the rotational hosting policy and centralized the event at Jubilee House in Accra.
This decision aims to reduce government spending on non-essential events, ensuring that resources are directed toward pressing national needs.
Conclusion
Ghana’s Independence Day has evolved over the years—from grand national parades to a rotating regional celebration, fostering unity and economic growth. However, due to high costs, the 2025 event will be more modest, reflecting current economic realities.
Despite these adjustments, March 6 remains a powerful symbol of Ghana’s resilience, unity, and unwavering spirit of freedom—a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
Deputy Minister-designate for Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has proposed innovative strategies to address the persistent Value Added Tax (VAT) revenue gap, highlighting the potential of a VAT lottery as a means to encourage compliance.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) executives in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency have accused former Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, of orchestrating the party’s defeat in the 2024 parliamentary elections.
They alleged that Adwoa Safo colluded with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to weaken the chances of the NPP’s candidate, Ambassador Aaron Mike Oquaye Junior.
Speaking at a press conference, Dome-Kwabenya NPP Constituency Chairman, Robert Osei Bonsu, claimed that Adwoa Safo’s failure to support the party and her alleged diversion of resources played a major role in fueling voter apathy and the NPP’s defeat.
“Adwoa Safo was absent from all campaign activities before and after losing the NPP primaries in 2024. She redirected NPP campaign resources to support the NDC candidate, neglected her parliamentary responsibilities, missed crucial votes such as the E-Levy bill, travelled to the U.S. without notice, and failed to attend assembly meetings. Efforts by the Chief of Staff and other senior figures to reconcile her with the party’s candidate were ignored,” he stated. The NPP executives dismissed allegations from a youth group blaming them for the party’s loss, insisting they effectively managed the constituency in Adwoa Safo’s absence.
The NPP leadership in Dome-Kwabenya reaffirmed their commitment to rebuilding the party in the constituency and implementing strategies to reclaim the lost seat in future elections.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) will implement a 21% tax on cloud services for customers in Ghana starting March 1, 2025. The tax will drive up operational costs for Ghanaian startups that depend on the global cloud service provider to store sensitive data and power essential digital operations.
This tax comprises a 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) and an additional 6% in levies, including the National Health Insurance Levy, the Ghana Education Trust Fund Levy, and the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy, AWS said in a notice to customers seen by TechCabal.
The introduction of the tax could place Ghanaian startups at a competitive disadvantage compared to counterparts in regions with more favorable financial conditions for cloud adoption. In January 2023, AWS announced that it will now accept payments in Naira, alongside seven other local currencies, to help customers avoid foreign exchange costs and payment friction.
Ghana’s broader tax landscape has long posed challenges for startups, with multiple levies and compliance costs affecting business operations. In 2023, Ghana’s parliament introduced new taxes for individuals and businesses as part of measures to reset the economy months after increasing its VAT from 12.5% to 15%. For startups relying heavily on digital infrastructure, like cloud services, these financial pressures can slow product development and market entry.
AWS’s new tax could also push Ghanaian startups to explore alternative cloud providers or on-premises infrastructure solutions, potentially slowing down their growth and innovation cycles.
Despite these challenges, forecasts suggest resilience in the market. Ghana’s public cloud sector is projected to reach $306.10m in revenue in 2025, according to Statista. Ghana, home to hundreds of startups, has built a vibrant startup ecosystem that depends heavily on affordable cloud services for development and deployment. However, the new AWS tax threatens to undermine the affordability of these critical services.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Charterhouse, Robert Klah, has stated that the possibility of reinstating the Group of the Year category at this year’s Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) remains uncertain.
His comments come after calls for the category’s return gained momentum following the impressive performances of groups like Dope Nation and Team Eternity Ghana (TEG) in the year under review.
However, during an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Klah stated that it is too early to confirm its inclusion, as the TGMA board has yet to assess entries and make a final decision.
“At the moment, I’m not in a position to say yes or no to the question because the board is yet to meet. The decision will be taken after an assessment of groups in the year under review,” he said.
He stated that Charterhouse has always been open to reinstating the category if the competition is strong.
“I want to set the record straight that Charterhouse has always said Group of the Year will be reinstated if it’s competitive,” he added.
The Group of the Year award has been absent from the TGMA since 2021, when gospel group, Bethel Revival Choir, won the title, beating notable groups like R2Bees, La Meme Gang, and Dope Nation.
Since then, despite consistent releases and performances from various groups, the category has not been featured, raising questions about the criteria used by the TGMA board.
This year, groups like Team Eternity Ghana and Dope Nation have dominated the airwaves with hits such as Defe Defe and Zormizor, reigniting calls for the category’s return.
Music duo Lali X Lola also addressed the issue in a letter to the TGMA board dated February 3, highlighting the resurgence of talented groups in Ghana’s music scene and urging the board to reconsider.
In response, Klah encouraged groups to explore other categories instead of limiting themselves to Group of the Year.
“Why do they want to limit themselves to just Group of the Year when they can file for other categories?” he asked.
He cited Team Eternity Ghana as an example, noting their eligibility for various gospel categories, including Most Popular, Artiste of the Year, and Collaboration of the Year.
“Same with other groups who may be doing other genres. They shouldn’t be restricted to just Group of the Year; they have many options by filing for other categories,” he added.
As the TGMA board prepares to review entries and finalise categories, stakeholders in the music industry await a decision on whether the Group of the Year award will make a comeback.

The Member of Parliament of Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, has condemned remarks made by former Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, regarding the English proficiency of some National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs.
In an interview on GHOne TV, and monitored by GhanaWeb, on Monday, February 24, 2025, he explained that the ability to speak English fluently should not be a measure of one’s competence in parliamentary proceedings.
“I don’t think that it was the best for the former minister to say that. We all go through certain processes to become members of Parliament, and we know that English is used in almost all of these processes. But if you are saying that someone cannot express themselves because they cannot speak English properly, I think that is very unfortunate,” he said.
He further explained that public speaking challenges can differ among individuals, stating that some MPs may struggle to express themselves before large audiences despite their competence in smaller settings.
“Some people really do not have the courage to speak when there is a large audience. That is the actual problem, not the fact that they cannot speak English,” he added.
During a recent interview on Movement TV, Fatimatu Abubakar mocked some NDC MPs, alleging that their struggle with the English language had limited their participation in parliamentary debates.
She claimed that this had inadvertently allowed the NPP Minority caucus to dominate discussions, making them appear as though they were in the majority.

Amid reports that Gifty Oware-Mensah, an Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association and former Deputy Director of the National Service Authority (NSA), is wanted by the National Intelligence Bureau for questioning, GhanaWeb has learned that she is in Morocco with the Black Queens.
GhanaWeb sources indicate that Gifty Oware-Mensah, who is the chairperson of the Management Committee of the senior female national team, is in Morocco with the team, discharging her duties.
It is believed that Gifty Oware-Mensah will be flying with the team to Ghana when they finish their training tour in Morocco.
The sources tell GhanaWeb that Gifty Oware-Mensah will avail herself of accountability as she believes she conducted her duties as a Deputy Director of the NSA with utmost integrity.
The Black Queens are on a training tour in Morocco and played their first game under coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren on Friday, February 21, 2025. The Black Queens were edged out 1-0 by the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco.
The Queens are expected to take on Raja Club Athletic Women in their final game of the brief training tour on Monday, February 24, 2025.

The mountain bongos have to go through a series of adaptation phases
Kenya has received 17 mountain bongos – a very rare type of antelope – from a conservation centre in the United States.
The antelopes are third-generation descendants of mountain bongos taken from Kenya in the 1960s.
The return of the critically endangered animals, from the Rare Species Conservation Foundation in Florida, was hailed as a “monumental step” in Kenya’s conservation efforts.
From about 500 in the 1970s, less than 100 mountain bongos are estimated to remain in the wild in Kenya, according to the Kenya Wildlife Service.
The KWS said this was due to habitat loss, poaching, illegal activities, disease, and small fragmented populations.
Tourism Minister Rebecca Miano described the arrival of the bongos at the country’s main airport on Sunday night as “emotional and so cool”, and a benefit for Kenya’s tourism and conservation sectors.
The animals were taken to wildlife sanctuaries in Meru county near Mount Kenya, where they will be nurtured before they are gradually introduced to their natural habitat.
Ms Miano said the mountain bongo, “a species originally only found in Kenya, has suffered untold grief over the decades… dwindling to alarming proportions”.
She said the plan was to grow the population to 700 by 2050.
The mountain bongo, which has a bright chestnut-red colour with narrow white stripes, is the largest African forest-dwelling antelope, according to the KWS.
It is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a Critically Endangered species – with more individuals in captivity than in the wild.
The first repatriation to Kenya was in 2004 when 18 mountain bongos were flown into the country.
KWS director-general Erastus Kanga said Kenya was expecting another batch of the mountain bongos from zoos in Europe in the next three months.
From captivity, the bongos have to go through a series of adaptation phases for them to build the immunity needed to survive in the wild.
In 2022, the head of conservancy at Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy (MKWC) told a Kenyan TV station that some of the bongos repatriated in 2004 had successfully been integrated into the wild and had started breeding.
The MKWC official, Robert Aruho, however, said that other had died from tick-borne diseases, adding that building immunity takes time.
Ghanaian man of God, Bishop Daniel Obinim has revealed that he told his wife that if she wasn’t happy with how he dealt with news of his alleged infidelity, she can go ahead and divorce him on the spot.
Obinim, speaking to his congregation in regards to allegations of him marrying another woman, said he put it bluntly to his wife that if she’s not happy, they can separate.
However, he said he also told her that if she gave him a chance, he will face the allegations, which he called a ‘fire’, squarely and put out the fire.
Obinim said his wife gave him permission to put out the fire which he did and their marriage is now on solid footing.
Recall that a few weeks ago news went viral from a certain self-acclaimed prophetess alleging that Obinim had married actress, Benedicta Gafah on the blind side of his wife.
Both Benedicta Gafah and Florence Obinim came out to debunk the news, and Bishop Obinim is now addressing it.
