The 8th Edition of the Ghana Business Standard Awards (GBSA) was held in grand style at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, Accra, bringing together industry captains, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and professionals to celebrate excellence, innovation, and leadership in Ghana’s business sector.

The prestigious event was organised by KN Communications Group, a leader in strategic communications and corporate event management. Over the years, the Group has transformed the GBSA into a world-class platform where Ghana’s outstanding brands and trailblazers are not only recognised but also given a stage to inspire the future of business.

The evening featured a distinguished lineup of personalities. Dr Hamza Bukari Zakaria, Economic Advisor to Ghana’s Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, delivered the keynote address, emphasising the role of businesses in driving inclusive growth, climate resilience, and innovation-led transformation. His words resonated with the audience, setting the tone for a night that went beyond recognition to envisioning a stronger, more sustainable Ghanaian economy.

The event also welcomed Hon. Musah Abubakari Sadat as the Special Guest of Honour, who lauded Ghanaian businesses for their perseverance amidst global economic pressures. He urged the private sector to deepen collaboration with the government, harness technology, and embrace best practices to propel Ghana’s competitiveness on the international stage.

Beyond the awards presentations, the GBSA created a vibrant atmosphere of interaction, networking, and opportunity-sharing. Business leaders and executives exchanged ideas over cocktails, formed new partnerships, and discussed solutions to pressing industry challenges. The corridors of Kempinski buzzed with conversations on collaboration, innovation, and the future of enterprise in Ghana.

Adding to the glamour of the evening was an exclusive exhibition by Stallion Group, which showcased its range of modern automobiles to guests. The display became a popular attraction, sparking conversations about Ghana’s growing automobile market and the role of mobility in economic growth.

The ambiance was electric—a fusion of elegance and excitement. The red carpet experience, stylish décor, and seamless organisation reflected the prestige of the event. Attendees described the GBSA as more than an award night, calling it a melting pot of industries, where banking, technology, manufacturing, health, energy, real estate, and creative arts converged under one roof.

For many, the highlight of the night was the sense of unity and celebration. While winners were recognised for their outstanding contributions, the collective message was clear: Ghana’s business community is resilient, innovative, and ready to take on new challenges.

In his remarks, Mr Oheneba Kwabena Kena, CEO of KN Communications Group, expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, partners, and participants for supporting the vision of the awards.

He stated: “The Ghana Business Standard Awards were created as a platform to honour excellence, celebrate innovation, and encourage ethical business practices. At KN Communications Group, we are committed to sustaining this vision—providing a space where excellence is rewarded and meaningful networks are built.”

He further emphasised that the awards will continue to evolve into a hub for dialogue, innovation, and growth, reinforcing Ghana’s position as a rising force in the global business arena.

The 8th Edition of the Ghana Business Standard Awards was therefore not only a celebration of success but also a catalyst for the future, inspiring businesses to aim higher and set new standards of excellence.

Elon Musk’s father accused of sexually abusing his children and stepchildren

Errol Musk, the 79-year-old father of tech billionaire Elon Musk, has been accused of sexually abusing five of his children and stepchildren since 1993, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.

The outlet said those allegations could be why the entrepreneur, who temporarily served as an adviser to the second Trump administration, rarely mentions his father – and that family members of Elon Musk have reached out for help, prompting him to sometimes take action to intercede.

Errol Musk dismissed the allegations reported by the Times out of hand, telling the publication they were “nonsense” and “false”. He did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the Guardian.

Citing personal letters, emails, and interviews with family members, the Times said that Errol Musk, who has at least nine children and stepchildren and has been married to three women, “maintains a powerful grip over much of the family”.

The Times said Elon Musk did not respond to the publication’s requests for comment.

Judging from court records, personal correspondence, social workers and interviews with family members, the Times said the earliest accusation against Errol Musk was in 1993, when his four-year-old stepdaughter told relatives he had touched her at the family house.

A decade later, the stepdaughter said she caught him sniffing her dirty underwear, the Times reported, adding that some family members have also accused him of abusing two of his daughters and a stepson.
Composite of pictures of Elon Musk as a child and adult.

Three separate law enforcement investigations were opened, the outlet said, citing police and court records, as well as family members’ accounts. Two of the inquiries ended without action, while it is unclear what happened in the third investigation.

“There was no evidence because this is nonsense,” Errol Musk said in a statement to the Times, saying “the reports are false”. He accused family members who were “putting the children up to say false things” and that they were trying to extort Elon, his eldest son.

Elon Musk has described a difficult relationship with Errol on the rare occasion when he has commented on his father. He told Rolling Stone in 2017 that his father had done “almost every evil thing you could possibly think of”.

In the profile, Musk said he had gone to live with his father at age 10 while his younger siblings, Kimbal and Tosca, stayed with their mother.

“I felt sorry for my father, because my mother had all three kids. He seemed very sad and lonely by himself. So I thought, ‘I can be company,’” he said.

He continued: “I didn’t really understand at the time what kind of person he was … It was not a good idea.”

Without going into specifics, he told the publication, “My dad will have a carefully thought-out plan of evil. He will plan evil.”

NPP executive condemns selective justice, accuses govt of failing in galamsey fight

An executive of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned what he describes as the unfair and selective application of the law under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.

Speaking during a protest dubbed “Yen Suro Ahunahunu” on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, he accused the government of weaponising the justice system against political opponents while failing to deliver on its promises.

NPP Protest: ‘Don’t allow a politician to use you to be unprofessional’ – Okoe Boye to police

According to him, the NPP was voted out of office largely due to its perceived failure to effectively tackle the galamsey menace.

He acknowledged that illegal mining became a major campaign issue, and the NDC capitalised on it by promising swift and decisive action within 120 days of assuming office.

“Clearly, this government has no clue when it comes to the fight against galamsey. We are all living witnesses to the various interventions we put in place. If Ghanaians were truly satisfied with our efforts, I don’t believe they would have voted us out,” he said.

He further alleged that despite the NDC’s bold promises, the situation has worsened, with reports suggesting that senior government and party officials are now complicit in illegal mining activities across constituencies.

“What we are seeing today is another form of collapse. It is alleged that senior government officials and party executives are deeply involved in galamsey operations. Instead of fighting the menace, they are arresting our party members. This is something we will not allow to continue,” he added.

The NPP executive emphasised that the protest was not about shaming individuals, but about defending the principles of democracy and the rule of law.

“Let me tell you, we are not even concerned about all of that. Our concern and the very reason we are embarking on this demonstration is that this government is not ready to respect our democracy. It is not prepared to ensure that there is the rule of law,” he stated.

He concluded by stating that while the NPP will not shield any member who has questions to answer, they will also not tolerate injustice or the selective application of the law.

“We will not protect anyone who has broken the law, whether in our party or elsewhere. But what we will not accept is injustice. What we will not accept is the unfair application of the law,” he stressed.

Botswana won Gold in the 4x400m relay final Botswana won Gold in the 4x400m relay final

When the curtain came down on the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Sunday, September 21, 2025, Africa stood tall on the global stage.

With breathtaking performances and historic victories, two nations, Kenya and Botswana, etched their names into the medal books, proving once again that the continent remains a powerhouse in track and field.

For Kenya, it was a championship to remember. The East African nation finished second overall on the medal table, collecting 11 medals in total: seven gold, two silver, and two bronze.

It was a performance that rivaled the country’s best showings in history and underscored its dominance in middle- and long-distance running.

World Athletics Championships: Botswana beats US to win historic 4x400m relay

Kenya’s charge was led by the incomparable Beatrice Chebet, who completed a stunning double by winning both the 5,000 metres and the 10,000 metres, showcasing her versatility and iron will.

Faith Kipyegon, already a legend, defended her crown in the 1,500 metres, further cementing her legacy as perhaps the greatest middle-distance runner of her generation.

Rising star Emmanuel Wanyonyi captured gold in the men’s 800 metres, while Faith Cherotich produced a championship record in the 3,000m steeplechase.

The women’s marathon belonged to Peres Jepchirchir, who stormed to gold in a dramatic race against Ethiopia, while Lilian Odira brought Kenya’s tally to seven with victory in the women’s 800 metres.

Kenya’s golden haul carried the weight of history: never before had the nation amassed so many golds at a single World Championships, a fact that electrified fans back home and across the continent.

But Africa’s story in Tokyo was not complete without Botswana, whose athletes lit up the sprints.

Busang Collen Kebinatshipi stormed to gold in the men’s 400 metres, running a blistering 43.53 seconds to set a national record.

Days later, he anchored his teammates, Lee Bhekempilo Eppie, Letsile Tebogo, and Bayapo Ndori, to a historic triumph in the men’s 4×400 metres relay

Botswana clocked 2:57.76 to become the first African nation ever to win the event at the World Championships.

Their two gold medals, plus a bronze, placed them fifth on the medal table, the highest finish in the country’s history.

Together, Kenya and Botswana’s exploits in Tokyo reminded the world of Africa’s enduring strength in athletics: Kenya in the endurance races, Botswana in the sprints.

For millions watching back home, these victories were more than medals; they were moments of pride, proof of potential, and sparks for the next generation of African champions.

Ahead Of President Mahama’s Address To The 80th United Nations General Assembly

0

The writer

As President John Dramani Mahama prepares to address world leaders at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the New Patriotic Party respectfully urges him to use that platform to speak boldly for the ordinary Ghanaian and to outline credible solutions to the challenges confronting our nation.

Back home, citizens continue to battle the harsh effects of illegal mining ‘galamsey’, an issue President Mahama once criticised others for failing to resolve. Today, rivers that sustain whole communities, including the Ayensu at Kwanyako in the Central Region, have become so polluted that water treatment plants are shutting down. Forest reserves, farmlands, and biodiversity are disappearing at an alarming rate, endangering livelihoods and the future of our children.

Many within his own administration, including the current Foreign Minister, once called for drastic measures, even a state of emergency, to stop galamsey. That same urgency is needed now more than ever.

Beyond environmental destruction, families are struggling with high living costs, limited job opportunities, and a sense of insecurity. Reports of excessive force by elements within our security services and the erosion of public trust in institutions must also be addressed if Ghana is to remain a beacon of stability in the region.

We therefore call on President Mahama, as he takes the world stage, to:

  1. Present a clear and firm plan to end illegal mining and restore our water bodies and forests.
  2. Commit to policies that relieve economic pressure on households and create decent jobs.
  3. Reaffirm Ghana’s dedication to human rights, accountable governance, and respect for the rule of law.
  4. Seek genuine international cooperation to support these efforts for the benefit of all Ghanaians.

Mr. President, the UN General Assembly offers a valuable opportunity to demonstrate leadership, not just abroad but at home. We stand ready, as a responsible opposition, to support every sincere initiative that protects our environment, strengthens our economy, and upholds the dignity of our people.

Let this moment be one where Ghana’s voice inspires confidence, both among her citizens and before the global community.

Ghana’s automotive sector set to receive expansion

Growth Investment Partners (GIP) Ghana Ltd, an investment platform established by British International Investment (BII), has announced a strategic investment in Springs and Bolts Company Limited (SBCL), a Kumasi-based manufacturer of automotive aftermarket components.

The investment will finance the acquisition of a fully automated leaf spring production line, enabling SBCL to expand production capacity from 4 to 12 metric tonnes per day while also enhancing efficiency.

The expansion is expected to boost local capacity, reduce reliance on imports, and position Ghana as a competitive supplier of automotive components within the West African region.

With regional demand for springs, bolts, and related products estimated at US$600 million annually, most of which is currently served by imports from Asia and South Africa, the investment will help strengthen Ghana’s industrial supply chains.

According to the Chief Executive and Investment Officer of GIP Ghana said there is a need to locally manufacture products to meet best international standards.

“There is a clear market gap for locally manufactured components that meet international standards. By backing SBCL’s expansion, we are not only scaling a competitive business but also contributing to Ghana’s broader industrialisation agenda,” he said.

For his part, the Chief Executive of SBCL, Derrick Asamoah Boahen welcomed the partnership highlighting SBCL’s position as a preferred automotive component in West Africa.

“Our goal is to position SBCL as the preferred source of high-quality automotive components in West Africa. We are proud to partner with GIP in this next phase of our growth. With increased capacity and automation, we can better serve the automotive, logistics, mining, and agriculture sectors while providing more affordable and quality alternatives to imported products,” he stated.

SBCL’s growth has been supported through partnerships with Supreme Springs of South Africa for technical expertise, GIZ for market access to logistics and mining companies, and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s (FCDO) Jobs and Economic Transformation (JET) Programme for market research and expanding capacities into novel production of fasteners.

Museveni nominated, seeks to extend rule beyond four decades

0

The Electoral Commission chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, has declared President Museveni a duly nominated candidate to seek reelection in the 2026 polls.

Mr Museveni, 81, arrived at the EC headquarters in Lweza, Entebbe Road at 10 am on Tuesday, accompanied by the First Lady, Janet Museveni and was received by several senior government officials, including Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja and Speaker of Parliament Anita Among.

The president, who has been in power since 1986 is the first candidate to be nominated for the presidential race that has attracted several other aspirants, including National Unity Platform (NUP) principal, Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine who challenged him in the 2021 polls.

After scrutinising his academic documents and nomination papers, Justice Byabakama said Mr Museveni had “fulfilled all the requirements of the nomination as stipulated in the Presidential Elections Act.”

“I want to thank the NRM members for again trusting me with the chairmanship of the party and flagbearer in the 2026 General Election. Where we are moving to now, is to convince the people of Uganda about what we have achieved and what we are planning to do in the next term,” Mr Museveni said in his maiden speech after nomination.

According to him, Uganda’s GDP has doubled in the last five years.

“I’m told in this term, Uganda’s GDP has doubled. In the last kisanji (term), our GDP was $34 billion. It is now $66 billion. To double the GDP in just one term is no mean achievement,” the president added.

Mr Museveni also decried the increasing level of corruption, crime and impunity in the country and pledged to deal with it in the next term as he embarks on what he described “double mission.”

“There’s peace in the country; there’s some crime, corruption and impunity. The NRM structure should come out and help expose criminals. If we work on corruption, criminality and impunity, it will help our people also enjoy the transformation that is happening. It will be a double mission in the coming kisanji,” he said.

He said his government will continue empowering the middle class and the business people “and make sure all Ugandans, including peasants benefit.”

Other aspirants to be nominated today are Mr Robert Kasibante of the National Peasants Party, and Mr Elton John Mabirizi of the Conservative Party.

NUP’s Robert Kyagulanyi and Mr Nathan Nandala Mafabi of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) will be nominated tomorrow, September 24.

Who is candidate Yoweri Museveni?

Born Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa on September 15, 1944, in Ntungamo District, he today ranks among the world’s longest-serving non-royal heads of state.

He has ruled Uganda since January 1986, making him the third-longest serving leader in that category. Museveni was raised in a cattle-keeping family of the Hima ethnic group. His father, Amos Kaguta, reportedly served in the King’s African Rifles during World War II, an experience said to have inspired the family name “Museveni”— derived from the Swahili for “seventh,” in reference to his father’s battalion. He studied at Kyamate Primary School, Mbarara High School, and Ntare School before joining the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, where he pursued Political Science and Economics.

There, under the influence of radical scholars like Walter Rodney, Museveni was drawn to Marxist and pan-Africanist thought. He founded the University Students’ African Revolutionary Front and even trained with FRELIMO fighters in Mozambique.

His thesis explored Frantz Fanon’s ideas on revolutionary violence—foreshadowing his later reliance on armed struggle. In the 1970s, Mr Museveni entered Uganda’s turbulent politics, first fighting to oust Idi Amin and later founding the Front for National Salvation (Fronasa). He played a key role in the 1979 Uganda–Tanzania war that toppled Amin.

Following the disputed 1980 elections—where his Uganda Patriotic Movement lost to Milton Obote’s Uganda People’s Congress—Museveni declared the process fraudulent and launched the five-year Bush War.

His popular Resistance Army later merged with other rebel factions to form the National Resistance Army (NRA) and its political wing, the National Resistance Movement (NRM). On January 29, 1986, the NRA captured Kampala, ending the short-lived Tito Okello junta. Sworn in as President, Mr Museveni promised a “fundamental change” built on his Ten-Point Programme of democracy, unity, and self-reliance. His early years drew praise.

Backed by the International Monitory Fund (IMF), his reforms stabilised Uganda’s battered economy, restored investor confidence, and initially improved human rights. But stability came at a cost. For nearly two decades, his government fought Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army in northern Uganda—a war that displaced millions and drew allegations of abuses by both rebels and state forces.

Regionally, Mr Museveni positioned himself as a military power-broker, intervening in Rwanda’s civil war, the Congo conflicts, and other Great Lakes crises. This earned him recognition as a strategic ally of the West, while also attracting criticism for allegedly fueling instability. At home, Mr Museveni steadily consolidated power. Term limits were scrapped in 2005; age limits followed in 2017, paving the way for open-ended rule.

Once hailed as a reformist, he has since faced criticism for shrinking civic space, repressing dissent, and militarising civilian life. The 2021 election, which gave him a sixth term with 58.6 percent, was condemned by observers after reports of ballot-stuffing, arrests, violence, and a nationwide Internet blackout.

Despite delivering macroeconomic stability, Uganda struggles with corruption, high youth unemployment, and slow social progress. In 2025, the country ranks 163rd in nominal GDP per capita and 157th on the Human Development Index. Now 81, Mr Museveni continues to cast himself as Uganda’s guarantor of peace and independence.

To supporters, he is a liberator who brought stability. To critics, he is an entrenched autocrat clinging to power. Despite repeated calls for succession planning, he has not indicated a clear heir, leaving uncertainty about the country’s political future.

Supporters of opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), who are demonstrating against police harassment and abuse of power, have stormed the Jubilee House to present their petition to the government.

The protest, dubbed ‘Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna’, which literally means “we fear no intimidation,” began at the Obra Spot in Accra on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

Scores of NPP supporters came out in their large numbers to join the leadership of the party, including Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organiser and Salam Mustapha, the Youth Organiser, to march through the principal street to the Jubilee House.

Upon arrival at the Jubilee House, Ghana’s seat of government, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, handed the petition to the Chief of Staff at the office of the Vice President, Alex Segbefia.

The members of the opposition party drew the government’s attention to what they described as a state-sponsored harassment and abuse of power.

They demanded that the government and security agencies respect citizens’ rights and refrain from using excessive force or intimidation tactics.

“We are here at the Jubilee House, the seat of government. The New Patriotic Party, through the youth wing of the party, staged this mammoth protest against what we will describe as a deliberate weaponisation of state institutions against citizens purposely to harass members of the opposition,” he said.

“So, the party is fully behind the national youth wing, and today, we are here to present to the president, John Dramani Mahama,” he added.

The NPP’s demonstration was organised after the recent arrest of some of its key party functionaries and social media activists.

Among the individuals arrested was Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested and detained by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged financial crimes and illegal mining.

Aside from Wontumi, the Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, was arrested over what the police described as “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace.”

In addition to the two regional chairmen, some social media activists of the NPP were also arrested.

Adomako, aka Sir Obama Pokuase, Prince Ofori and Yayra Abiwu, were arrested in connection to threats against the President and misinformation.

“This partnership was designed to strengthen healthcare delivery across the Tarkwa Nsuaem and Prestea-Huni Valley Municipalities,” he disclosed.

Baffoe-Bonnie nominated as next Chief Justice

0

President John Mahama has nominated Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the country’s next Chief Justice.

The President has written to the Council of State seeking its advice on his choice of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie to lead the judiciary.

The statement described him as a jurist who has “served with diligence and integrity” and made “invaluable contributions to the development of Ghanaian jurisprudence.”

According to the Presidency, he has earned the respect of the Bench, the Bar, and the wider legal fraternity for his intellect, impartiality, and unwavering commitment to justice.

His wealth of experience and long service on the Bench were cited as qualities that make him eminently qualified for the high office.

The development follows the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office for stated misbehaviour.

Her dismissal was based on the findings of a constitutional committee established under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who has been acting in the role since April 2025 after the suspension of Justice Torkornoo, is currently the most senior judge on Ghana’s Supreme Court.

He was appointed to the apex court in June 2008 by then-President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Born on 26 December 1956, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie had his basic education at Goaso before continuing to Konongo Odumase Secondary School, where he obtained both his Ordinary and Advanced Level certificates.

He studied law at the University of Ghana and later at the Ghana Law School, where he was called to the Bar in 1983.

He rose through the ranks of the judiciary, serving as a Circuit Court Judge in Kumasi, a High Court Judge at Duayaw Nkwanta, and later as an Appeals Court Judge before his elevation to the Supreme Court.

If his nomination is approved, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie will officially take over as head of the Judiciary, steering the institution at a crucial time following the dramatic removal of his predecessor.

The Council of State is expected to advise the President in the coming days, after which Parliament will take up the nomination for vetting and approval.

Adopting Asian model key to Ghana’s economic growth

0

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has outlined his vision to drive Ghana’s economic growth using what he describes as the successful “Asian model” of development.

Speaking about how countries like South Korea, India, and the UAE built strong, competitive economies after his vetting on Tuesday, September 23, the outspoken politician and businessman emphasised the importance of government-backed private sector development through strategic funding and accountability.

“The Asian model, what they did at that time, when they decided to compete with Europe and America, was that they identified potential talents and potential businessmen and funded their projects like Daewoo, Hyundai, Samsung,” Agyapong said.

He explained that governments in Asia made deliberate efforts to support promising entrepreneurs by offering structured financial backing, with strict checks to ensure that funds were used appropriately.

“They made sure, made conscious efforts to support them by giving them loans… The government then sends the money to the company manufacturing the raw materials… If you tell them the imports or your raw materials or whatever equipment you’re going to use will arrive in three months… they are there to inspect,” he added.

According to him, one of the biggest barriers to entrepreneurship in Ghana is the lack of access to capital. He believes that the government should play a proactive role in providing funding and then gradually stepping back once the business becomes profitable and self-sustaining.

“The most difficult part is the capital. So if the government supports you to get the capital and you run it well, you become a millionaire. This is how they’ve been able to expand their businesses,” he noted.

However, Agyapong stressed that financial support must be accompanied by strict accountability measures to prevent misuse.

“The government should be bold and also punish people who take the money,” he stated.

Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has opened up on the challenges he faces each time he prepares for his annual Rapperholic concert.

In an interview on YFM Kumasi on September 23, 2025, the rapper, who is set to stage his first Rapperholic concert in Kumasi, revealed that selecting which songs to perform is always a difficult task.

“One of the hardest things to do is to pick what song to perform. Because anytime there is rapperholic, we have the fans angry because they are not satisfied and are looking forward to a certain song.

“There are a lot of songs; it is a big catalog. If I try to perform every song, it is going to be hard. What I try to do is to show where I perform songs that we normally don’t,” he said.

Sarkodie further noted that although it’s tough to narrow down the list, his team is working to ensure that the final set list includes the favorites of fans.

“If you are not a fan of Sarkodie, you can’t say you haven’t heard ‘Can’t Let You Go’ and the other big songs. When we put such songs together, we have close to two hours.

He added that this year, his team, led by DJ Mensah, will be trying something different.

“This particular one, Mensah said we should put a list of songs we haven’t heard for a while. And we are getting feedback from the people and the songs they want to hear on stage,” he added.

Kofi Adams vows to invest in volleyball at CAVB Zone III Club Championship launch

0

Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams at the lunch of CAVB Zone III Club Championship play videoMinister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams at the lunch of CAVB Zone III Club Championship

The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has pledged his full support for the CAVB Zone III Volleyball Club Championship during its launch on September 23, 2025, at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel.

The tournament, which will be hosted in Accra, is scheduled to begin on March 1 and conclude on March 8, 2026.

The president of Kalibi Sporting Club and politician, Bernard Mornah, called on the sports minister and the government to build gyms and other infrastructural facilities to support volleyball competitions in Ghana.

“Honourable minister, let me say that volleyball deserves your attention. If you give us even one-twentieth of the support that the Black Stars receive, not football entirely, just the Black Stars, volleyball will reach a level we can be proud of. While football is getting AstroTurfs, we are very disappointed that we can’t get gyms for volleyball. When it rains, we are left at the mercy of the weather. So, minister and IGP, at least build two gyms for us,” he said.

The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, also vowed to invest heavily in volleyball and other sporting disciplines to improve their prospects in the country.

He explained that this initiative was one of the reasons the Black Stars’ budget for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers was reduced, in order to free up revenue to support other sporting disciplines.

“In every community, we should have a volleyball court because it does not require much space. We can even have a multipurpose court for volleyball, netball, basketball, and others. But the lands for these projects have been taken by people who should have known better.

“Sports is a huge area we can invest in to generate billions and trillions. As a minister, I am working to ensure that all sporting disciplines receive the support they need even though football exists. That explains why the Black Stars’ budget was slashed. Some people didn’t understand, but there is a need for other sports to benefit from the national cake,” the minister stated.

The volleyball tournament will feature 48 volleyball clubs from West African countries including Ghana, Burkina Faso, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Benin, Niger, Togo, and Nigeria.

Other dignitaries present at the event included Greater Accra Volleyball Chairman, Alfred Offei; Zone III President, Ali Yaro; and representatives from the Ghana Police Service.

EC declares NDC’s Prof. Alidu Seidu MP-elect for Tamale Central

0

The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially declared Professor Alidu Mahama Seidu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the winner of the Tamale Central by-election, after he emerged as the sole candidate in the race.

The Returning Officer for the constituency, Muniru Musah, announced the decision in line with Constitutional Instrument (CI) 127, which empowers the EC to declare an unopposed candidate duly elected.

“As it stands, only Prof. Alidu Seidu Mahama stands nominated, and according to CI 127, he shall be declared elected,” Mr. Musah stated.

The by-election was necessitated by the death of the incumbent MP, Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who lost his life in a helicopter crash nearly two months ago.

Initially, three candidates, including Prof. Seidu, the PNC, and the LPG, filed to contest. However, both opposing candidates later withdrew, leaving the NDC candidate unchallenged.

In response, the EC reopened nominations for a 10-day period, but no fresh contenders came forward. With the window closed and no challengers, Prof. Seidu was declared MP-elect without a single vote being cast.

Reacting to the development, the NDC’s Deputy Regional Secretary, Ziblim Saaka, expressed gratitude to constituents and assured them of inclusive, development-driven leadership. He said the MP-elect will deliver on his promises and advance the party’s commitment to progress in Tamale Central.

Prof. Seidu is expected to be sworn into Parliament in the coming days to assume his duties.

NPP ‘Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna’ Demo Today

0

The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to stage a protest march in Accra today, against what it described as state-sponsored harassment of its members and the abuse of power by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Addressing the media last Friday, the National Youth Organiser of the party, Salam Mustapha, stated that the demonstration, dubbed ‘Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna’,  meaning ‘We do not fear intimidation’,  is intended to send a strong message to the ruling NDC that the NPP will not be intimidated or forced into submission despite recent attacks on its members.

He said, “The ‘Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna’ is a demonstration of our resolve that we will not be intimidated. We remain resolute.”

He stated that the demonstration will start from the Obra Spot, where the protesters will march to the Police Headquarters to present a petition to the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and proceed to the Jubilee House to deliver a final petition to President John Mahama.

The National Youth Organiser also described recent developments in the country where some members of the opposition NPP have been targeted as shameful, adding that such actions will not silence the party or its members.

Mr. Mustapha further cited the arrest and detention of the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe,  popularly called ‘Abronye DC’, along with reported harassment of Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party,  Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly referred to as ‘Chairman Wontumi’ and several pro-NPP social media activists.

He also accused the government of reintroducing the “culture of silence” that once stifled freedom of speech in the country.

That posture, according to the NPP, undermines the foundations of the country’s democracy and equated to an authoritarian regime.

He also mentioned that apart from thousands of youth groups that are expected, the Minority Caucus in Parliament led by its leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, as well as leaders of the party, would also participate in the protest.

“All the wealth I have is from God. God gave it to me. Secondly, I didn’t see or do anything illegal. The bible says, God’s blessing makes people wealthy.”

“All I have is from God. All those criticising me are shallow-minded; they don’t know the wealth that I am talking about. They should look for God to open their minds to know what I am talking about.”

“In Matthew 6:32-33, But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. So look for a heaven visa before you look for a London visa. The only currency we put in the heaven account is living a good lifestyle.”

Capture

Hon. Kennedy Agyapong has proposed that, he will use the “Asian Miracle Model” to develop Ghana.

The “Asian Miracle Model” also known as “East Asian Model” or “East Asian Miracle” is a common model mostly used by Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.

The main focus of the “Asian Miracle Model” are:
1. Stable Macroeconomic environment
2. Rapid economic growth
3. Significant improvements in the living standards of the citizens
4. Low Inflation Rates
5. High Savings Rates
6. Poverty Reduction
7. Stimulation of the growth of the Private Sector
8. Creation of Privately owned national champions
9. High dependence on the export market for growth.
10. Robust Security System
11. Effective and efficient management of public natural resources and public lands
12. Tourism and Agriculture
13. Technology and industries.
14. Jobs and Wealth Creation
15. Powerful Roads and Transportation Systems
16. Physical Infrastructure aims at boosting Tourism

On the other hand, Hon. Bryan Acheampong would also be developing Ghana using the “Mixed Economic Model” or “Mixed Economic System”.

The “Mixed Economic Model” or “Mixed Economic System” is a world class model predominantly used by the United States of America (USA), China, United Kingdom (UK), Germany, India, France, Russia, Sweden, Norway, and Canada.

Currently, the two largest economies in the world are the United States of America with $30.50 trillion GDP, and China with $19.23 trillion.

Dr. Bryan Acheampong, when elected as a President of Ghana will use the economic principles of the United States of America (USA) supported by some economic principles of China, United Kingdom, India, Russia, Germany, Canada, France, and Sweden to completely transform the economy and develop Ghana.

The main focus of the “Mixed Economic Model” or “Mixed Economic System” includes:
1. Strong, stable, reliable, and sound Macroeconomic fundamentals.
2. Private Sector led growth which have the capacity to generate about 90% of the Country’s GDP.
3. Blend of Capitalism and Socialism
4. Free Market driven by government interventions for the public good.
5. Technology, Innovations, and Artificial Intelligence
6. Export-oriented growth
7. Business Friendly environment underpinned by effective management of the Exchange Rate, Interest Rate, Inflation Rate, and tax regimes.
8. Massive investments into Agriculture, Tourism, Education, Healthcare, and Physical Infrastructure
9. Powerful Roads and Transportation Systems.
10. High Savings Rates
11. Low Inflation Rates
12. Low Interest Rates
13. Excellent Social Welfare and support systems
14. Active Private Sector Participation in the national economy
15. Efficient Production and allocation of resources
16. Poverty Reduction, and addressing inequalities
17. Reducing the risk of monopoly power by allowing fair competition between different sectors and industries.
18. Robust Security
19. Prudent management of public lands and natural resources.
20. Jobs and Wealth Creation.

If the government of New Patriotic Party (NPP) embraces any of these aforementioned models, NPP will not be apologizing to Ghanaians for economic hardships and bad governance in the future.

Mr Eazi shares experience of marrying a billionaire’s daughter

Nigerian singer Mr Eazi and wife Temi Otedola Nigerian singer Mr Eazi and wife Temi Otedola

Nigerian singer Mr Eazi has shared the experience of being married to Temi Otedola, the daughter of billionaire businessman Femi Otedola.

In an interview on the 90sBaby Show, the singer explained that from the very beginning of their relationship, Temi had made it clear she saw him as her future husband.

According to him, this happened as far back as 2017 when they first met.

Temi Otedola and Mr Eazi’s Wedding: Five highlights that got everyone talking

“One thing she always says is, from the first she knew that, this is my man. We met in 2017. So this is like, yeah, I’m hot. But you know, it’s possible for you to be hot and everybody is singing your song but you ain’t got shit in your bank account. I wasn’t where I am now,” he said.

Eazi pointed out that at the time they met, he was enjoying success in the music industry but did not have the financial stability or investments he has built today. He mentioned that Temi’s decision to be with him had nothing to do with his wealth.

“So if she was meeting me where I am now, I have my own venture capital company where I invest. I’ve invested in over ten businesses across the world from Latin America to Africa. My label is now worth a couple of millions of dollars. But this is like she meeting me pre that,” he explained.

At 19 I borrowed N19M from my uncle to go into diesel business – Mr Eazi

The singer said power and money rarely announce themselves. Citing a Ghanaian proverb, he added that people who come from old money often live with quiet confidence rather than flamboyance.

“One thing I’ve noticed, a lot of the people I’ve met with power, they don’t show it. There’s a Ghanaian saying that goes like, ‘Sika mpɛ dede’, money don’t want noise. A lot of true wealth, especially when it’s old money, don’t make noise,” he said.

NPP Race: I believe I will win; I’m ready to become president

0

Kennedy Agyapong is a flagbearer aspirant of the NPP Kennedy Agyapong is a flagbearer aspirant of the NPP

Flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, has expressed confidence in emerging victorious in the party’s pending presidential primary and becoming its leader.

Speaking to journalists after his vetting by a committee set up by the party on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Agyapong said that based on how he answered the questions, he is confident the committee can assess his readiness to become president of the country.

Addo-Kufuor chairs vetting as Bawumia, Ken Agyapong face NPP committee

“I was prepared. I believe I answered all the questions and they know I’m ready to be president of this country. They [vetting committee] really wanted to know why I want to be president and my vision for the country as well as the party. I enumerated a couple of points on how I’m going to address some problems, so, basically that was the intent.

“They know I’ve been a true and true party member for so long, so I didn’t face any serious questions or they didn’t antagonise me because they know my potential already. But they asked tangible and reasonable questions. They were not (sic) and I was free to answer their questions,” he recounted.

Kennedy Agyapong, a former lawmaker for Assin Central, also explained his ‘Asian model’ vision, which he says he will use to develop the country.

According to him, the model, which he said is dominant on the Asian continent, sees the government identify potential businessmen and provide loans to them to fund their businesses.

“I told them and explained what I mean by Asian model. You know, I have seen some proof. So, Asian model, what they did that time when they decided to compete with Europe and America was that they identified potential talents and potential businessmen and funded their projects like Daewoo, Hyundai, Samsung in Korea, for instance. They made conscious efforts to support them by giving them loans,” he explained.

Elaborating further, Agyapong gave an example to make his point and vision clearer to the public.

He said; “What they did was that if Kwaku Kwarteng decides to build a building, they will ask for the cost of the raw materials and where he’s going to get the raw materials from. The government then sends the money to the company manufacturing the raw materials, and they will give you couple of months if you tell them the raw materials or whatever equipment you’re going to use will arrive in three months.

NPP Flagbearer Race: Bawumia set for NPP vetting ahead of 2026 primary

“In three months, they will be there to inspect if indeed you received the equipment. Now, what they do is that the government partners the individual, the private sector. So, they wean themselves off when you finish paying the loan, then it becomes your business. And you know, in business, the most difficult part is the capital. So, if government supports you to get the capital and you run it well, you become a millionaire. This is how they’ve been able to expand their businesses.”

How Ghana fared at the 2025 World Athletics Championship

0

From September 13 to 21, 2025, Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium pulsed with energy as the world’s fastest, strongest, and most daring athletes pushed the limits of human performance.

And in the middle of that spectacle stood Ghana’s small but determined contingent, a mix of rising stars and familiar names, carrying a nation’s hopes with every stride and every leap.

Before the Championships, Ghana’s best in the men’s 4×100m relay on the global stage was 38.07 seconds.

That time was set at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene by the quartet of Sean Safo-Antwi, Benjamin Azamati, Joseph Oduro Manu, and Joseph Paul Amoah. They placed 5th in that final.

Watch how Ghana finished fourth in the 4x100m relay final

In sprinting, Ghana has had sprinters reach semis and occasionally finals, but never quite close to medals.

Rose Yeboah had shown promise before: she broke the national high jump record, cleared 1.94m at NCAA D1 events, earned Olympic qualification, won continental golds, but her World or Olympic finals were mostly elusive.

The Tokyo 2025 surge

Then came Tokyo, Ghana had the opportunity to go one step further. But sometimes, the hope usually kills and that’s what happened.

Azamati and Saminu fall in the 100m

For Benjamin Azamati, the Championships were supposed to be a chance to reassert himself among the world’s elite sprinters.

But the track can be unforgiving. Under the bright lights in Heat 5 of the men’s 100m, he never quite found his rhythm.

His 10.30 seconds left him sixth, out of the competition before the semis. It was a hard blow for a man who has carried Ghana’s sprinting banner for years.

When Azamati faltered, Abdul-Rasheed Saminu announced himself. At just 27, he stormed through Heat 2 with a blistering 10.09, placing second and securing his ticket to the semifinals.

For a debutant, it was a run of pure courage, and for a moment, Ghana dared to dream.

In the semis, he shaved even more off his time, 10.08, but in a cruel twist of fate, it was only good enough for a fourth position.

One place shy of the final. A near miss, but one that proved Ghana’s fastest man belongs on the big stage.

The relay team and Rose Yeboah’s heartbreak

The relay team gave Ghanaians real belief that a medal was highly possible. With Saminu, Azamati, Joseph Paul Amoah, and Ibrahim Fuseini combining in near-perfect rhythm, they scorched the track in their heat to set a new national record of 37.79 seconds.

That single run lit up social media back home, with many fans daring to believe that the long wait for a World Championship medal was about to end.

In the final, they pushed hard again, clocking 37.93 seconds, just 0.04 seconds shy of bronze.

It was a breathtaking performance, but when the dust settled, a section of Ghanaians couldn’t hide their disappointment.

The medal never came, and the heartbreak of “so close, yet so far” was etched across the nation.

Still, for many others, the record-breaking run felt like a promise that Ghana’s moment of glory is only a matter of time.

The same mixture of pride and frustration surrounded Rose Yeboah in the high jump.

When she cleared 1.92m to reach the final, she made history as the first Ghanaian woman in two decades to do so, carrying the hopes of an entire nation on her shoulders.

In the final, however, she bowed out at 1.88m, finishing 15th. For Ghanaians watching, the achievement of reaching that stage was uplifting, but it also came with a pang of what might have been.

Yeboah’s presence in the final proved that Ghana belongs on the biggest stage, but the dream of a medal was once again left hanging in the air.

So, Ghana leaves Tokyo without a medal, but not without progress. Records were broken, debuts were made, and dreams edged closer to reality.

Residents of Aboabo endorse demolishing of unauthorized structures

0

By Muyid Deen Suleman  Kumasi Sept. 23 GNA – Residents of Aboabo in the Asokore Mampong MMunicipality have expressed their support for the assembly’s decision to demolish unauthorized structures along the banks of the Aboabo river, which run through the community.

The move, according to the residents, is a big relief to the community, as those structures have been a source of concern due to the risks they pose, especially during heavy rains.

According to some of the residents, the structures have been blocking the waterways and often leading to the overflow of the river, resulting in heavy floods which destroyed lives and properties in the area, anytime there was a heavy downpour.

Alhaji Musah Mohammed, a resident noted that, said the demolition of these unauthorized structures was necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of the community and help protect properties.

He emphasized that, upon closer examination, it became evident that, the individuals residing in the vicinity of the river had resorted to using it as a convenient places and that, such irresponsible behaviour not only degraded the aesthetic quality of the environment, but also gave rise to significant health hazards.

Hajia Ramatu Ibrahim also added that the accumulation of waste in the river could lead to water contamination, which in turn could result in the spread of diseases among the local population.

The residents, recognizing the detrimental impact of these unauthorized structures on their community, advocated for their demolition.

Baba Seidu Abugri, also said by removing these encroachments, the safety and well-being of the residents could be better safeguarded, and the action would serve to protect properties in the area from potential damage caused by the presence of these structures.

The residents believe that the demolition of these unauthorized structures is necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of the community and also help protect properties.

They commended the MCE for taking proactive measures to address this issue and prevent potential disasters.

Mr. Ben Abdullah Alhassan, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), on his part reaffirmed the assembly’s commitment to removing all illegal structures along the riverbanks.

He said, it was crucial to prioritize the safety of residents and protect the environment from further degradation.

The community looks forward to seeing the positive impact of this initiative once the unauthorized structures are removed, he noted.

According to him, the cooperation between the residents and the local authorities was vital in ensuring a successful outcome in the demolition exercise.

Overall, the residents of Aboabo are optimistic about the future improvements that will result from this necessary action.

Meanwhile, the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly has issued notice to those living around the riverbank to evacuate willingly or forced to evacuate.

‘Provide Tailored SME Financing To Support 24-Hour Economy’

0

Mr. Goosie Tannoh (M) with some participants

Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy, Goosie Tannoh, has urged banks to collaborate with the government to help provide tailored financing for businesses to help drive the successful implementation of the programme.

Speaking at a Banking Sector Roundtable held at Bank Square in Accra, under the theme, “Financing Ghana’s 24-Hour Future: The Role of Banks in the Transformational Journey,” Mr. Tannoh highlighted that while the Secretariat of the 24-Hour Economy has made considerable progress engaging stakeholders, challenges in accessing credit remain a major challenge, particularly for Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

He said, “We’ve worked with several banks and financial institutions to develop solutions that support the SME sector but the cost of funding and the collateral demands in Ghana’s banking sector continue to be a serious challenge.”

According to him, many SMEs especially startups and young entrepreneurs struggle to meet traditional collateral requirements, which often demand physical assets.

That form of model, he indicated, is unsustainable and continues to stifle innovation and private sector growth hence his outfit is actively exploring and incorporating alternative forms of collateral as part of the ecosystem.

“Let’s be honest: how many small business owners in Ghana have a house they can offer as collateral. Our goal is to create an environment where access to credit is possible without unrealistic collateral obligations. Finance is at the centre of development, without it, all our programmes and ideas remain shelf documents. We must bring banks into the heart of this agenda,” he stated.

He also explained that unlocking the potential of Ghana’s productive sectors especially in agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, and digital services requires a coordinated approach between public and private institutions, with banks playing a central role while lauding the efforts of  banks to support government to implement the 24-Hour economy.

He reiterated that the policy is a private-sector-led initiative designed to stimulate job creation, industrial growth, targeting critical value chains that seeks to increase productivity and economic output.

Director of Banking Supervision Ismail Adam, in a speech delivered on behalf of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, reiterated the central bank’s commitment to supporting the 24-Hour Economy by creating the macroeconomic conditions necessary for stable and inclusive financial growth.

He emphasised that the success of the 24-Hour Economy depends not only on access to finance but also on the stability and resilience of the banking sector while ensuring public confidence in the system through regular supervision and enforcement of prudential regulations.

“The Bank of Ghana stands ready to support this initiative using its core monetary policy tools,” Adam stated. “With stable prices and lower inflation, interest rates can be adjusted downward, allowing financial institutions to provide more affordable credit.”

“We continuously monitor and supervise regulated financial institutions to ensure they remain sound, comply with international best practices, and uphold strong corporate governance and risk management systems,” he noted.

He also stated that innovation in payment systems and financial technologies (fintech’s) would play a key role in supporting 24-hour operations, making banking and financial services more accessible to businesses operating beyond traditional working hours.

The roundtable meeting brought together Association of Banks, Heads of financial Institutions, non-bank financial institutions including the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Ghana Exim Bank, and officials of Ghana Incentive-Based Risk-Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (GIRSAL).

Participants at the meeting also discussed the need for a national financing strategy aligned with the 24-Hour Economy, where banks, development finance institutions, and regulators work together  to support SMEs across various value chains from agribusiness, agro-processing to manufacturing, logistics, and digital commerce.

The Secretariat further assured the public that it will continue to engage with all stakeholders to ensure that programmes under the 24 Hour Economy translates into economic growth, jobs, and opportunities for Ghanaians.

We’ll resolve school placement issues

0

The Ministry of Education is reassuring parents facing school placement issues with their wards that their concerns will be addressed swiftly.

Hundreds of parents have gathered at the GNAT Hall, a resolution center for placement issues, causing frustration due to long queues for redress.

In an interview with Citi News on Tuesday, September 23, Media Relations Officer for the Ministry of Education, Hashmin Mohammed, stated that measures have been implemented to attend to parents promptly, ensuring effective crowd management.

He further assured that the government is taking lessons from what it has observed to ensure a more coordinated system is put in place in the coming years for placement resolutions.

“We have been able to decongest the crowd because we have moved in a lot of personnel to listen to their issues. Going forward, we will be attending to their issues with speed, and when that is done and they are satisfied then we will not have crowds here.

“We still have much time and when there is the need for that [postponement of reopening date] I think that management and higher authorities will take a decision on that. We believe that we will be able to deal with any issue brought here.”

“Going online will also lead us to a lot of problems. The experience we have gathered for this year, we are hopeful that next year we will factor in those concerns and next year we won’t have such crowds.”

Only 1.2% of over one billion Africans have access to 5G networks

0

Internet disruptions have been happening in West Africa Internet disruptions have been happening in West Africa

Only 1.2 percent of Africans currently have access to 5G networks compared with a global average of more than 20 percent, a sign that the continent remains at an early stage in accessing next-generation mobile technology, according to a new report from the International Telecommunication Union and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The State of Broadband in Africa 2025 report says that while Africa has made strong progress in mobile connectivity, the newest wireless technology remains largely out of reach for the continent’s 1.24 billion inhabitants.

However, industry projections suggest this could change dramatically over the next decade, with 5G expected to reach 17 percent penetration by 2030.

The slow 5G rollout contrasts sharply with Africa’s mobile success story in previous generations of wireless technology. Currently, 3G networks reach 77 percent of the continent’s population, while 4G coverage extends to 44.3 percent of people.

“The mobile sector has proved especially successful, with strong growth in mobile broadband and the development of large mobile operators,” the report states, citing companies like MTN and Vodacom as key drivers of expansion.

“However, there is still a significant usage gap, with 710 million Africans not using the internet despite living in an area served by mobile broadband infrastructure,” it adds. Key barriers, it says, remain affordability of handsets and lack of digital skills.

Chinese companies like Huawei, with more competitively priced products, have been able to establish a strong presence as a result across Africa.

The technology mix across sub-Saharan Africa shows 3G connections still dominating at roughly 50 percent of all mobile connections, while 4G accounts for 33 percent. Legacy 2G networks maintain 10 percent of connections, with 5G making up the remaining fraction.

Some countries, such as Somalia, have seen mobile connectivity flourish, not despite a lack of central authority but largely because of it, as large telecom companies have established large networks that cover urban areas well but also remote parts of the country, leading one British researcher to unfavourably compare Manchester with Mogadishu.

Mobile operators have invested heavily in infrastructure development, spending $28bn over the past five years across sub-Saharan Africa. Looking ahead, the industry plans to invest an additional $62bn between 2023 and 2030, much of which will focus on 5G network rollout and expansion.

The mobile ecosystem already contributes significantly to African economies, generating 7.3 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) worth $140bn in economic value and supporting 3.7 million jobs across the region in 2023.

Regional disparities within Africa reveal stark contrasts in connectivity progress.

Internet usage in Africa rose from 25 percent to 38 percent between 2019 and 2024, but remains well below the 68 percent global average. Sub-Saharan Africa lags furthest behind at 38 percent connectivity, with regional variations from 35 percent in Eastern and Southern Africa to 39 percent in Western and Central Africa.

Africa had a stark rural-to-urban divide in internet connectivity globally too. Only 57 percent of people in Africa were using the internet in urban areas compared with an 83 percent global average, and only 23 percent in rural areas.

Rwanda emerges as a particular success story, with telecommunications transformation following market liberalisation in 2006. The country developed a wholesale open-access 4G LTE network through a public-private partnership with Korea Telecom, ranking ninth among 38 African countries for mobile broadband affordability in 2017.

Satellite connectivity is expanding rapidly, with Starlink already operating in 14 African countries, including Benin, Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria, though South Africa notably lacks a confirmed launch date. The Democratic Republic of the Congo and Somalia became the latest African countries to gain access to Starlink this year.

Logeist, Govt Partner To Reclaim Galamsey Lands

0

ACP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba receiving the key to the car from Daniel Doe-Tamakloe

Logeist Group Limited, in partnership with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Soil Research Institute (SRI), the Ghana Concerned Small Scale Miners Association, and DECARBONIKA (Italy), has announced plans to reclaim 2,000 hectares of degraded land in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region.

Illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, has left behind large tracts of unproductive land, causing widespread deforestation, soil erosion, and water pollution from chemicals such as mercury.

According to officials, the destruction has not only harmed the country’s biodiversity but also threatens food security and the cocoa sector.

Chief Executive Officer of Logeist Group Limited, Daniel Doe-Tamakloe, said the project, dubbed Logeist EcoReclaim, will focus on renaturalisation of heavily degraded lands through phytoremediation by planting energetic crops made up of fast-growing wood species to extract heavy metals from the soil. He explained that the harvested wood would be processed for furniture and green charcoal, making the site the first industrial land for wood production and providing Ghana with international green labelling.

Beyond environmental restoration, Mr. Doe-Tamakloe stated that the project aims to generate sustainable income streams for local communities.

“The goal is not only to reclaim the land but also to ensure communities benefit through new livelihoods. We are also engaging traditional leaders and environmental experts to make this project sustainable,” Mr. Doe-Tamakloe said.

As part of its community-focused strategy, the initiative will recruit more than 1,500 young people, creating employment opportunities and helping to reduce the high rate of youth unemployment.

In addition to the reclamation drive, Logeist Group Limited presented a Zonda GWM pickup vehicle to the Ashanti Regional South Police Command at Bekwai.

The donation, the company noted, is intended to strengthen security operations in the area, which has often been affected by illegal mining activities.

Deputy Commander of the Ashanti Regional South Police, ACP Cephas Arthur, expressed gratitude for the gesture, noting that the locally assembled vehicle would enhance mobility and improve daily policing efforts.

ACP Arthur pledged the command’s support for the reclamation programme, stressing that security agencies were committed to protecting lives, property, and the integrity of the country’s environment. He further stated that the reclamation project is expected to deliver multiple benefits, including improved water quality, restored ecosystems, and better protection of biodiversity.

Mr. Doe-Tamakloe added that the long-term vision is to scale the project beyond the Ashanti Region to other parts of the country that have suffered from the destructive activities of illegal mining. He indicated that the initiative is intended to become a model for balancing environmental protection with sustainable development.

Ubeatz urges Shatta Wale to record live version of ‘Street Crown’

0

Revered Ghanaian music producer and audio engineer Hubert Kofi Anti, known in showbiz as Ubeatz, has advised Shatta Wale to consider a live rendition of his latest hit song ‘Street Crown’.

Ubeatz believes a live performance would add depth and freshness to the record, which was released about a month ago and has already gained massive traction.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Music Lab on September 20, 2025, he praised Shatta Wale for producing a brilliant composition but stressed that a live touch could elevate the song even further.

“The guitarist sounded like he picked some sample and dropped it in. A real guitarist would have featured better. The live performance of this song will be very good, when real musicians are playing this,” he said.

He intimated that Shatta Wale should consider a version performed by a live band or orchestra.

‘Street Crown’ has received endorsement from fans and industry stakeholders, including Jamaican dancehall star Vybz Kartel, and is currently topping various music charts.

Music Lab takes Joy FM listeners behind the scenes of Ghana’s most talked-about songs, breaking down the creative and technical processes such as vocals, lyrics, instrumentation, arrangement and production. The show features music producers, musicologists and creatives who share expert analysis.

This week’s edition included Austine Woode (broadcaster), Kofi Boachie-Ansah also known as Beatmenace (audio engineer), Freeman Daniel Ame (voice coach and artiste development manager), and Ubeatz.

According to Joy FM, Music Lab seeks to educate and entertain music lovers, creatives, students, media practitioners and industry professionals. Its goals include demystifying the processes behind hit songs, highlighting Ghana’s musical diversity, and providing a platform for learning and critique.

The segment airs on Showbiz A-Z every Saturday from 2pm to 6pm on Joy 99.7 FM. The programme is hosted by Kwame Dadzie and produced by Philip Nai, with support from Anita Teye, Oliver Fangnon and DJ Wobeti.

NPP Stages “Resistance” Protest Against Alleged Government Harassment

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) launched a major demonstration today in Accra, challenging what the opposition describes as systematic harassment of its members by the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. The protest, dubbed “Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna” (We Resist Fear), began at 6:00 a.m. from Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, drawing hundreds of party supporters and sympathizers.

The demonstration represents the opposition’s most significant challenge to President John Dramani Mahama’s administration since the NDC assumed power following the December 2024 elections. Party leaders cite a pattern of arrests targeting NPP figures as evidence of what they term “selective application of justice.”

Central to the protest is the case of NPP Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, known as Abronye DC, who was remanded into custody for the second time on September 12, 2025, by Circuit Court Judge Samuel Bright Acquah after being denied bail. The case has become a rallying point for opposition claims of political persecution.

The party also references concerns over Chairman Wontumi and other party executives, though specific details of recent arrests remain contested. Abronye DC was charged with “offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace” and remanded into police custody, prompting widespread criticism from NPP leadership and legal experts.

The NPP has accused President John Mahama and the ruling NDC of reintroducing Ghana’s “culture of silence”, citing arrests of opposition members and alleged abuse of state power. This reference recalls Ghana’s authoritarian past when political dissent was suppressed through intimidation tactics.

Opposition Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha, who announced the protest two weeks ago, framed the demonstration as defending democratic principles. The party’s statement called on “all patriots, youth, and citizens who believe in liberty and accountability” to participate in what they describe as resistance against intimidation.

The timing of the protest is significant, occurring less than nine months into the Mahama administration’s second term. Political analysts suggest this early confrontation indicates potential challenges the government may face in managing opposition relations throughout its tenure.

The arrests have drawn criticism from various legal figures, including prominent lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who questioned the judicial handling of cases involving opposition figures. Such criticism suggests broader concerns about the independence of Ghana’s judiciary under the current administration.

The demonstration highlights growing tensions between Ghana’s major political parties, with the NPP positioning itself as a defender of democratic freedoms against alleged government overreach. The party’s ability to mobilize supporters for the protest demonstrates its organizational capacity despite being in opposition.

Government officials have yet to respond comprehensively to the NPP’s allegations, though the Ghana Police Service has maintained that all arrests follow due process and are based on specific legal violations rather than political considerations.

The protest occurs against the backdrop of Ghana’s traditionally competitive political environment, where power has alternated between the NPP and NDC since the return to constitutional democracy in 1993. The current tensions suggest this pattern of democratic competition faces new challenges in the contemporary political landscape.

Today’s demonstration will be closely watched as an indicator of how Ghana’s democratic institutions handle opposition challenges to government authority in an era of increasing political polarization across Africa.

SEC, GoldBod, and GCX collaborate to bring transparency to gold investment SEC, GoldBod, and GCX collaborate to bring transparency to gold investment

Ghana is taking steps to transform its role in the global gold market by moving beyond production into structured investment.

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and the Ghana Commodity Exchange (GCX) are in advanced talks to introduce gold trading on the GCX platform.

The initiative, once launched, will not only give retail and institutional investors direct access to the country’s most valuable mineral but also elevate Ghana’s status as a hub for regulated commodity trading.

Reports have noted that the move is part of a broader national strategy to capture more value from gold by shifting from extraction and export into transparent, investment-driven trading systems.

To ensure investor confidence, GoldBod is working with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to secure regulatory backing and put safeguards in place.

Analysts have also noted that a successful rollout could position Ghana as one of Africa’s leaders in structured gold investment, further diversifying its economy and creating wealth opportunities for everyday citizens.

NDC’s Prof Alidu Mahama declared MP-elect for Tamale Central

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Tamale Central, Professor Alidu Seidu Mahama, has been officially declared Member of Parliament-elect by the Electoral Commission.

This follows the closure of an extended deadline for filing nominations for the by-election, which passed at 5:00 PM on Sunday, September 21, with no other political parties or independent candidates stepping forward to contest the seat.

12 aspirants cleared for Tamale Central NDC primary on September 6

In a video shared by 3news on its Facebook page on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, the Returning Officer of the Electoral Commission in the Tamale Central Constituency, Muniru Musa, said he was making the declaration in accordance with CI 127.

He explained that following the expiration of the 10-day window after the initial withdrawal by the PNC and LPG from the by-election in the constituency, Prof Mahama was the only candidate who remained nominated.

“… In line with CI 127, the Electoral Commission reopened nominations for another 10 days. Those 10 days elapsed only the day before yesterday on Sunday. At his stands, it means that only Professor Alidu Seidu Mahama stands nominated and according to the CI 127 which reads ‘where a time allow for delivery of nomination (sic) process has ended and on the day before the elections, only one candidate stands nominated, the candidate shall be declared elected.

“In view of this, I, Muniru Musa, Returning Officer for the Tamale Central constituency, in working with CI 127, hereby declare Professor Alidu Seidu Mahama as the MP-elect for the Tamale Central constituency,” he declared.

The Tamale Central by-election followed the demise of its former MP, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who, along with seven others, perished in a fatal helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, in the line of duty.

Former MP opposes 281% tariff hike, calls out Goldbod

A former Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, has suggested that the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) should shoulder the cost of water treatment rather than passing the burden onto consumers.

His comments come in response to Ghana Water Limited’s (GWL) proposal for a 28% tariff adjustment, which would raise charges from GH¢5.28 per cubic metre to GH¢20.09.

The utility provider justified the request by citing growing debts, rising operational expenses, and the high cost of treating polluted water, largely attributed to illegal mining activities also known as galamsey.

Utility bills may rise as PURC prepares 2026 tariff review

Kissi said the gold sector is a direct beneficiary of both legal and illegal mining, which has severely degraded water bodies.

“Why must Ghanaians pay for the treatment of water? The GoldBod has made significant revenue, and part of that should go into repairing the damage caused to our water facilities,” he said as quoted by myjoyonline.com.

The former MP stressed that ordinary consumers should not be penalised for problems they did not create.

“It is unfair for the Ghana Water Company to transfer this burden to us. As things stand, all the gold — whether mined legally or illegally — ends up with GoldBod. They, not ordinary Ghanaians, should pay for the damages,” he added.

GWL, however, maintains that its proposed tariff hike is also influenced by exchange rate pressures, as well as the rising cost of imported equipment and treatment chemicals.
