Security officer with the destroyed drone
SOME ILLEGAL miners (galamseyers) shot down a drone during an anti-galamsey operation at the Birim River in Kyebi, located in the East Akim Municipal Assembly of the Eastern Region, according to A Rocha Ghana, an environmental conservation group in the country.
The drone by A Rocha Ghana was used to help access hard-to-reach and hazardous areas as well as monitor illegal mining sites, but was shot down by the galamseyers upon detecting its surveillance of the site.
In a video shared by The 1957 News, one could see the destroyed drone in the hands of a security officer complaining about the damage caused by illegal miners.
“They destroyed the drone, destroyed the camera part of the drone. Because the drone has a sensor all around, when it is about to crash into about 10 metres, … I will be able to detect it. So they stood on top of the mountain, upon realising that the drone was approaching them, they hit the drone,” the drone technician, Agyei, narrated.
A Rocha Ghana, together with some galamsey taskforces, was able to retrieve some equipment used in destroying farmlands for illegal mining. They pledged to identify those involved in the destruction of both the drone and the land.
A Rocha Ghana is a prominent environmental advocacy group that has been at the forefront of the fight against galamsey in Ghana. The group is pushing for decisive action to curb illegal mining, which is ravaging the country’s forests, water bodies, and ecosystems.
Along with six other civil society organisations, they have taken the government to court over the passage of Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, which allows mining in forest reserves, arguing it violates environmental protection laws.
In recent times, they called on the government to expedite the rollout of an identification system for security personnel involved in combating illegal mining.
“The decision to provide an ID system for the officers who are engaged in the anti-galamsey operations is very much needed. Considering the development of a lot of people out there, parading themselves as national security operatives, which can create some level of insecurity as well.
“So, we need to ensure that these things are done swiftly and quickly, because even though we are taking some actions, I believe that these actions are coming slowly. There is no urgency with it, and for me, this is where we need to look carefully,” Deputy Director of A Rocha Ghana, Daryl Bosu, disclosed.

The people of Teshie warmly welcomed back home Bike2MyRoots Champion on Saturday, September 20, 2025, as the community gathered to welcome Emmanuel Adjei, the Ghanaian cyclist behind the campaign.
The event marked the beginning of the final leg of his 10,000-kilometre solo journey from Munich to Accra, an adventure spanning 16 countries across Europe and Africa.
Adjei’s journey, powered by determination and his trusted bicycle nicknamed The Bulldozer, carried more than just supplies such as food, water, a tent, and repair tools.
It carried a mission—to raise awareness and funds for EduSpots, a Ghana-based NGO that creates and supports community-led learning spaces. Along the way, he picked up keepsakes like an animal bone in Morocco and rode through challenging terrains in Western Sahara and Mauritania before entering Ghana through Ivory Coast.
His arrival in Ghana on Friday, September 19, at Independence Square, was followed by a durbar ceremony the next day at Teshie Community Library, where residents, partners, and dignitaries celebrated his achievement.
Olivia Lamptey, a representative from the Ghana Library Authority, Teshie Branch, highlighted the importance of the occasion.
“Today, as we gather to celebrate education, literacy, and the future of our children in partnership with EduSpots, we are reminded that it takes a united effort to build a strong and enlightened community. Mr. Emmanuel Adjei, your contribution is not only an investment in books and resources but also in the bright future of these young ones.”
Head of Leadership at EduSpots, Prince Ampofo praised Adjei’s determination and linked his journey to the NGO’s vision.
EduSpots, which began ten years ago with one small community library, now supports over 50 learning hubs across Ghana and Kenya, impacting more than 10,000 learners.
“Just like EduSpots’ dream, Emmanuel had a vision which could not be stopped. After over 10,000km cycled, €20,000 raised, and countless sleepless nights, today we celebrate a true champion of education,” Ampofo said.
For Emmanuel Adjei, the homecoming was deeply emotional. “Not only did I see my mother, which brought tears to my eyes, but the people of this community showed me my journey was not in vain. It sparked a fire to rebuild this community through education and empowerment,” he shared.
Adjei revealed that the Bike2MyRoots initiative, in partnership with EduSpots and the Ghana Library Authority, will directly support the Teshie Community Library with books, laptops, Wi-Fi kits, and furniture.
Active MoMo accounts climb to 25.1 million
Mobile Money has strengthened its dominance in the local payments ecosystem, with registered accounts surpassing 77 million and transaction values hitting GH¢2.76 trillion.
This was between the beginning of 2025 and August 2025, according to the Bank of Ghana’s report.
According to the report, registered Mobile Money accounts rose from 70.5 million in August 2024 to 77.7 million a year later.
Active accounts, defined as those that transacted at least once in the previous 90 days, increased from 22.8 million to 25.1 million.
Monthly Mobile Money transactions climbed from 724 million to 831 million over the same period, with values rising from GH¢273.6 billion to GH¢354.1billion.
Balances held on float, the trust accounts backing electronic value in circulation, expanded from GH¢22.2billion to GH¢28.4billion.
The agent network also expanded, with registered agents growing from 863,000 to 938,000.
Active agents fluctuated, falling to 404,000 in October 2024 before recovering to 433,000 by August 2025.
Mobile Money Interoperability, which enables transfers across networks and between bank accounts and wallets, recorded significant gains with transaction values nearly doubling from GH¢2.5 billion to GH¢4.9 billion, while the number of transactions increased from 18.4 million to 26.4 million.

Former CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Akwasi Agyeman, has stated that greater attention should be given to veteran musicians in the creative arts industry.
In an interview with GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie, Akwasi Agyeman noted that musicians play a pivotal role in the economy, hence their welfare should be taken more seriously.
“I don’t think people understood the creative arts to be a business. I mean, if you look at the old musicians, they played their lives out for nothing. But the new generations starting from the Lumba, Dada KD, they started looking at it as business friendship aside, brotherhood aside.

“I believe that if we take a cue from him and from people like Lumba and the upcoming and new generation of artistes, we need to pay more attention to the sector, we need to pay more attention to the welfare of our musicians,” he said.

According to him, this expectation makes it difficult for veteran musicians to open up on their struggles.
“When they are going through difficulties, they don’t have anybody to share with. They are always meant to be seen laughing, they are always meant to be seen happy, and meant to be seen rich. But sometimes it’s not like that,” he added.

A 24-year-old labourer has been remanded for mobile phone theft
A 24-year-old labourer has been remanded into prison custody by the Asante Abuakwa circuit court in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality for stealing five mobile phones at Asakraka, near Abuakwa.
James Mensah pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing and will reappear before the court presided over by Mr Jephthah Appau on October 03, this year.
Police Chief Inspector Evans Ayimbisa, prosecuting, told the court that the complainants, Richard Opoku, Francis Mensah, John Bonayaa, and William Yenkyeibe, were small-scale miners residing at Asakraka, while the suspect was a labourer residing at a cottage near their mining site.
He said, on September 08, this year, at about 20 hours, the complainants kept their one iPhone 13, two iPhone 12 Pro Maxes, one Samsung Galaxy S21, and a Samsung A8 cell phone, all valued at GHC 35,700 in a bag, placed same spot and busily engaged in their mining.
Prosecution said the complainants saw the suspect roaming near the spot and later detected theft of the bag containing the phones and, in their search, found it empty and abandoned in the bush.
The complainants suspected Mensah, who had then left the cottage for about a week.
He was found later at Asakraka, and he was arrested and handed over to the Atwima Kokoben police.
In his caution statement, he admitted stealing and said he sold two of the phones at GHc 1,050, swapped one for an Infinix cell phone at Adum-PZ, and spent the proceeds.
Prosecution said the suspect could not assist the police in getting the unidentified dishonest receiver.
After further investigations, he was charged and brought before the court.

Students across the country have expressed concern over the ongoing nationwide strike declared by the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of TUC (Ghana), fearing it will disrupt their academic calendar and affect teaching and learning.
TEWU on Friday, September 19, 2025, declared an indefinite nationwide strike in protest against the government’s delay in signing their conditions of service. The union also accused the government of neglecting the welfare of non-teaching staff within the education sector.
Speaking to Citi News, some students said the strike is affecting their studies and have urged President Mahama to help end the strike
“It affects me as a student in a way that it delays our courses, and also, classes being cancelled affect our studies a lot. So we are pleading with the government to do something about this and provide the needs of the lecturers so that they can attend to us for our studies to be well organised.”
Meanwhile, Chairman of the TEWU–TUC, University of Ghana Branch, Benjamin Nkumsah, said members on campus have been directed to go home. He stressed that they will only return to work when the government engages them and addresses their demands.
“The issue of calling off the strike we have passed there because initially that was what we were expecting but you know there have been several occasions that they have asked us to call off the strike and when we go on the table we don’t get anything better and so this time around we have resolved that not until all these issues have been resolved we are not coming back to work,” he explained

The Muslim Stakeholder Organisations and Institutions have taken exception to a release regarding their petition to President John Mahama headlined “Resetting Hajj”.
In a reaction signed by Alhaji Mohammed Habib Alhassan, the stakeholders pointed out that the National Chief Imam was aware about their petition, and that it is not true that the spiritual head was unaware.
This, they added, is evidenced by the fact that the Chief Imam directed his protocol officer to take custody of the copy of the petition sent to President Mahama.
Continuing, the stakeholders stated that “we reiterate our position that His Excellency the President assured Muslim leadership of establishing a permanent Hajj body to manage Hajj operations with transparency and accountability. However, we haven’t heard that he has reversed this decision…. by involving individuals with a history of mismanagement of Hajj operations and leaving behind huge debts.
“We maintain that taxpayers’ money should not be used for Hajj operations, and demand a comprehensive report on the previous Hajj organisations in Ghana before entrusting any group with Hajj management,” they said.
Their position, they said, is reinforced by the unfortunate experiences of 2024 and 2025 where over 28 Ghanaian pilgrims lost their lives, hundreds went missing and hundreds banned from entering the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for five years, adding that “we continue to support the President’s reset agenda and urge him to prioritise reforming Hajj operations in Ghana to prevent such incidents in the future.”
The stakeholders, in taking exception to the contents of the release which prompted this statement, pointed out that “we the petitioners have taken note of a certain claim and assertion made by an individual purporting to act on behalf of the National Chief Imam.”
The stakeholders disputed the position of the said release which stated that the National Muslim Conference is the sole representative of the Muslim Ummah. They expressed surprise that the same imams making up the Conference are being disrespected by the content of the purported release from the Chief Imam.
“We advise our Muslim brothers and sisters, particularly politicians in Parliament promoting this organisation, to exercise prudence and responsibility in their words and actions.
“They should refrain from sowing seeds of discord in the Muslim Ummah for their political agenda,” they stressed.
The stakeholders are made up of multiple organisations among them the Ahlunsunna Wal Jam’a, Shia Muslim Community in Ghana, Tijaniya Muslim Movement of Ghana, Faidatul Tijanniya Brahimiya Council, National Council of Zongo Chiefs, Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Ghana, Coalition of Muslim Organisations, Ghana and Jammat Tabligh, Ghana, Conference of Regional Chief Imams of Ghana and Istiqama Muslim Mission.
President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie for the position of the substantive Chief Justice.
This was announced in a statement issued by Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Tuesday, September 23.
“President John Dramani Mahama has in accordance with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution, forwarded the name of His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie to the Council of State for consideration as Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.

Ajumako (C/R), Sept. 23, GNA – Reverend Obed Danquah, Chief Executive Officer of Morgan Community International School, has been installed as the new Nkabomhene of Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Area.
Under the stool name Nana Osomfo Kweku Nkrumah Danquah I, he also assumes the role of Adontenhene of Gomoa Ablekum, with a mandate to promote peace, unity, reconciliation, and development in the area.
The new Divisional Chief swore an oath of allegiance to Obrempong Nyanful Krampah XI, Omanhene of the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Area, in the presence of divisional chiefs, queen mothers, and kingmakers in line with tradition.
Earlier, Nana Esuon Abonyi Kwaata II, Asihene of Gomoa Ajumako, speaking on behalf of other divisional chiefs, urged the new Nkabomhene to work diligently to transform lives and improve infrastructure in the area.
Obrempong Nyanful Krampah, who is also President of the Traditional Council, reminded Nana Danquah that his new role was a huge task, especially in addressing protracted chieftaincy and land disputes. He expressed confidence that the new chief, as a man of God, would quickly establish an office to deal with developmental issues and reconciliation efforts.
He stressed that peace and unity were critical to facilitating government projects and pledged the council’s support to ensure Nana Danquah’s success.
In his acceptance speech, Nana Osomfo Kweku Nkrumah Danquah expressed gratitude to the Omanhene, divisional chiefs, queen mothers, and his family for the honour. He pledged to use his experience as a minister and business executive to drive human transformation, attract investment, and foster infrastructural development.
He called on the chiefs and people of Gomoa Ablekum to unite, protect their lands, and resist land guards, while urging the youth to avoid illicit drugs and embrace productive ventures.
Nana Danquah lamented the high costs and dire consequences of prolonged litigation, saying it had led to loss of lives and resources. He assured that, with his installation, disputes would be resolved amicably to secure lasting peace.

An executive of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned what he describes as the unfair and selective application of the law under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
Speaking during a protest dubbed “Yen Suro Ahunahunu” on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, he accused the government of weaponising the justice system against political opponents while failing to deliver on its promises.

According to him, the NPP was voted out of office largely due to its perceived failure to effectively tackle the galamsey menace.
He acknowledged that illegal mining became a major campaign issue, and the NDC capitalised on it by promising swift and decisive action within 120 days of assuming office.
“Clearly, this government has no clue when it comes to the fight against galamsey. We are all living witnesses to the various interventions we put in place. If Ghanaians were truly satisfied with our efforts, I don’t believe they would have voted us out,” he said.
He further alleged that despite the NDC’s bold promises, the situation has worsened, with reports suggesting that senior government and party officials are now complicit in illegal mining activities across constituencies.
“What we are seeing today is another form of collapse. It is alleged that senior government officials and party executives are deeply involved in galamsey operations. Instead of fighting the menace, they are arresting our party members. This is something we will not allow to continue,” he added.

The NPP executive emphasised that the protest was not about shaming individuals, but about defending the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
“Let me tell you, we are not even concerned about all of that. Our concern and the very reason we are embarking on this demonstration is that this government is not ready to respect our democracy. It is not prepared to ensure that there is the rule of law,” he stated.
He concluded by stating that while the NPP will not shield any member who has questions to answer, they will also not tolerate injustice or the selective application of the law.
“We will not protect anyone who has broken the law, whether in our party or elsewhere. But what we will not accept is injustice. What we will not accept is the unfair application of the law,” he stressed.

The Muslim Stakeholder Organisations and Institutions have taken exception to a release regarding their petition to President John Mahama headlined “Resetting Hajj”.
In a reaction signed by Alhaji Mohammed Habib Alhassan, the stakeholders pointed out that the National Chief Imam was aware about their petition, and that it is not true that the spiritual head was unaware.
This, they added, is evidenced by the fact that the Chief Imam directed his protocol officer to take custody of the copy of the petition sent to President Mahama.
Continuing, the stakeholders stated that “we reiterate our position that His Excellency the President assured Muslim leadership of establishing a permanent Hajj body to manage Hajj operations with transparency and accountability. However, we haven’t heard that he has reversed this decision…. by involving individuals with a history of mismanagement of Hajj operations and leaving behind huge debts.
“We maintain that taxpayers’ money should not be used for Hajj operations, and demand a comprehensive report on the previous Hajj organisations in Ghana before entrusting any group with Hajj management,” they said.
Their position, they said, is reinforced by the unfortunate experiences of 2024 and 2025 where over 28 Ghanaian pilgrims lost their lives, hundreds went missing and hundreds banned from entering the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for five years, adding that “we continue to support the President’s reset agenda and urge him to prioritise reforming Hajj operations in Ghana to prevent such incidents in the future.”
The stakeholders, in taking exception to the contents of the release which prompted this statement, pointed out that “we the petitioners have taken note of a certain claim and assertion made by an individual purporting to act on behalf of the National Chief Imam.”
The stakeholders disputed the position of the said release which stated that the National Muslim Conference is the sole representative of the Muslim Ummah. They expressed surprise that the same imams making up the Conference are being disrespected by the content of the purported release from the Chief Imam.
“We advise our Muslim brothers and sisters, particularly politicians in Parliament promoting this organisation, to exercise prudence and responsibility in their words and actions.
“They should refrain from sowing seeds of discord in the Muslim Ummah for their political agenda,” they stressed.
The stakeholders are made up of multiple organisations among them the Ahlunsunna Wal Jam’a, Shia Muslim Community in Ghana, Tijaniya Muslim Movement of Ghana, Faidatul Tijanniya Brahimiya Council, National Council of Zongo Chiefs, Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Ghana, Coalition of Muslim Organisations, Ghana and Jammat Tabligh, Ghana, Conference of Regional Chief Imams of Ghana and Istiqama Muslim Mission.

A tragic accident on the Yamoransa–Cape Coast highway early Tuesday morning has claimed one life and left 18 others injured.
The crash occurred around 5:30 a.m. when a Mercedes Sprinter bus (registration number CR 624-25), heading towards Cape Coast, collided with a stationary Man Diesel truck (WR 1546-V) parked in front of the NDC regional office.
A rescue team from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) rushed to the scene and managed to extricate three passengers who had been trapped in the mangled bus. One of the victims was confirmed dead on the spot.

Eyewitnesses said the Man Diesel truck had broken down and was left on the road due to a mechanical fault. The Sprinter bus, while attempting to overtake another vehicle, rammed into the stationary truck, leading to the crash.

“Clearly, this government has no clue when it comes to the fight against galamsey. We are all living witnesses to the various interventions we put in place. If Ghanaians were truly satisfied with our efforts, I don’t believe they would have voted us out,” he said.
He further alleged that despite the NDC’s bold promises, the situation has worsened, with reports suggesting that senior government and party officials are now complicit in illegal mining activities across constituencies.
“What we are seeing today is another form of collapse. It is alleged that senior government officials and party executives are deeply involved in galamsey operations. Instead of fighting the menace, they are arresting our party members. This is something we will not allow to continue,” he added.

Errol Musk, the 79-year-old father of tech billionaire Elon Musk, has been accused of sexually abusing five of his children and stepchildren since 1993, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.
The outlet said those allegations could be why the entrepreneur, who temporarily served as an adviser to the second Trump administration, rarely mentions his father – and that family members of Elon Musk have reached out for help, prompting him to sometimes take action to intercede.
Errol Musk dismissed the allegations reported by the Times out of hand, telling the publication they were “nonsense” and “false”. He did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the Guardian.
Citing personal letters, emails, and interviews with family members, the Times said that Errol Musk, who has at least nine children and stepchildren and has been married to three women, “maintains a powerful grip over much of the family”.
The Times said Elon Musk did not respond to the publication’s requests for comment.
Judging from court records, personal correspondence, social workers and interviews with family members, the Times said the earliest accusation against Errol Musk was in 1993, when his four-year-old stepdaughter told relatives he had touched her at the family house.
A decade later, the stepdaughter said she caught him sniffing her dirty underwear, the Times reported, adding that some family members have also accused him of abusing two of his daughters and a stepson.

Three separate law enforcement investigations were opened, the outlet said, citing police and court records, as well as family members’ accounts. Two of the inquiries ended without action, while it is unclear what happened in the third investigation.
“There was no evidence because this is nonsense,” Errol Musk said in a statement to the Times, saying “the reports are false”. He accused family members who were “putting the children up to say false things” and that they were trying to extort Elon, his eldest son.
Elon Musk has described a difficult relationship with Errol on the rare occasion when he has commented on his father. He told Rolling Stone in 2017 that his father had done “almost every evil thing you could possibly think of”.
In the profile, Musk said he had gone to live with his father at age 10 while his younger siblings, Kimbal and Tosca, stayed with their mother.
“I felt sorry for my father, because my mother had all three kids. He seemed very sad and lonely by himself. So I thought, ‘I can be company,’” he said.
He continued: “I didn’t really understand at the time what kind of person he was … It was not a good idea.”
Without going into specifics, he told the publication, “My dad will have a carefully thought-out plan of evil. He will plan evil.”

Ghana and Norway have signed a Political Consultations Agreement on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), marking a new chapter in bilateral relations between the two nations.
The agreement, signed on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is aimed at deepening cooperation in key sectors, including oil and gas, trade facilitation, education, agribusiness, artificial intelligence (AI), maritime security, the blue economy, and intelligence sharing.

With breathtaking performances and historic victories, two nations, Kenya and Botswana, etched their names into the medal books, proving once again that the continent remains a powerhouse in track and field.
For Kenya, it was a championship to remember. The East African nation finished second overall on the medal table, collecting 11 medals in total: seven gold, two silver, and two bronze.

Rising star Emmanuel Wanyonyi captured gold in the men’s 800 metres, while Faith Cherotich produced a championship record in the 3,000m steeplechase.
The women’s marathon belonged to Peres Jepchirchir, who stormed to gold in a dramatic race against Ethiopia, while Lilian Odira brought Kenya’s tally to seven with victory in the women’s 800 metres.
Kenya’s golden haul carried the weight of history: never before had the nation amassed so many golds at a single World Championships, a fact that electrified fans back home and across the continent.
But Africa’s story in Tokyo was not complete without Botswana, whose athletes lit up the sprints.
Busang Collen Kebinatshipi stormed to gold in the men’s 400 metres, running a blistering 43.53 seconds to set a national record.

Botswana clocked 2:57.76 to become the first African nation ever to win the event at the World Championships.
Their two gold medals, plus a bronze, placed them fifth on the medal table, the highest finish in the country’s history.
Together, Kenya and Botswana’s exploits in Tokyo reminded the world of Africa’s enduring strength in athletics: Kenya in the endurance races, Botswana in the sprints.

Back home, citizens continue to battle the harsh effects of illegal mining ‘galamsey’, an issue President Mahama once criticised others for failing to resolve. Today, rivers that sustain whole communities, including the Ayensu at Kwanyako in the Central Region, have become so polluted that water treatment plants are shutting down. Forest reserves, farmlands, and biodiversity are disappearing at an alarming rate, endangering livelihoods and the future of our children.
Many within his own administration, including the current Foreign Minister, once called for drastic measures, even a state of emergency, to stop galamsey. That same urgency is needed now more than ever.
Beyond environmental destruction, families are struggling with high living costs, limited job opportunities, and a sense of insecurity. Reports of excessive force by elements within our security services and the erosion of public trust in institutions must also be addressed if Ghana is to remain a beacon of stability in the region.
We therefore call on President Mahama, as he takes the world stage, to:
Mr. President, the UN General Assembly offers a valuable opportunity to demonstrate leadership, not just abroad but at home. We stand ready, as a responsible opposition, to support every sincere initiative that protects our environment, strengthens our economy, and upholds the dignity of our people.
Let this moment be one where Ghana’s voice inspires confidence, both among her citizens and before the global community.

He accused the government of weaponising the justice system against political opponents
An executive of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned what he describes as the unfair and selective application of the law under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
Speaking during a protest dubbed “Yen Suro Ahunahunu” on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, he accused the government of weaponising the justice system against political opponents while failing to deliver on its promises.

According to him, the NPP was voted out of office largely due to its perceived failure to effectively tackle the galamsey menace.
He acknowledged that illegal mining became a major campaign issue, and the NDC capitalised on it by promising swift and decisive action within 120 days of assuming office.
“Clearly, this government has no clue when it comes to the fight against galamsey. We are all living witnesses to the various interventions we put in place. If Ghanaians were truly satisfied with our efforts, I don’t believe they would have voted us out,” he said.
He further alleged that despite the NDC’s bold promises, the situation has worsened, with reports suggesting that senior government and party officials are now complicit in illegal mining activities across constituencies.
“What we are seeing today is another form of collapse. It is alleged that senior government officials and party executives are deeply involved in galamsey operations. Instead of fighting the menace, they are arresting our party members. This is something we will not allow to continue,” he added.

The NPP executive emphasised that the protest was not about shaming individuals, but about defending the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
“Let me tell you, we are not even concerned about all of that. Our concern and the very reason we are embarking on this demonstration is that this government is not ready to respect our democracy. It is not prepared to ensure that there is the rule of law,” he stated.
He concluded by stating that while the NPP will not shield any member who has questions to answer, they will also not tolerate injustice or the selective application of the law.
“We will not protect anyone who has broken the law, whether in our party or elsewhere. But what we will not accept is injustice. What we will not accept is the unfair application of the law,” he stressed.

Lady Dentaa Amoateng is the CEO of GUBA Enterprise
Chief Executive Officer of GUBA Enterprise, Lady Dentaa Amoateng, has firmly stated that she is not ready to take up any political role.
In an interview on Hitz FM on September 23, 2025, Dentaa, who was recently honoured with a diplomatic passport, noted that even though she has not officially been offered a government appointment, she is not interested in taking a political role.
Dentaa explained that she doesn’t necessarily have to take a government role to effect any change in the country.
She explained that her work benefits the government, which is why she prefers to remain independent rather than take up a political position.

“The majority of calls have been really positive… That is what encourages me to do more,” she added.

Growth Investment Partners (GIP) Ghana Ltd, an investment platform established by British International Investment (BII), has announced a strategic investment in Springs and Bolts Company Limited (SBCL), a Kumasi-based manufacturer of automotive aftermarket components.
The investment will finance the acquisition of a fully automated leaf spring production line, enabling SBCL to expand production capacity from 4 to 12 metric tonnes per day while also enhancing efficiency.
The expansion is expected to boost local capacity, reduce reliance on imports, and position Ghana as a competitive supplier of automotive components within the West African region.
With regional demand for springs, bolts, and related products estimated at US$600 million annually, most of which is currently served by imports from Asia and South Africa, the investment will help strengthen Ghana’s industrial supply chains.
According to the Chief Executive and Investment Officer of GIP Ghana said there is a need to locally manufacture products to meet best international standards.
“There is a clear market gap for locally manufactured components that meet international standards. By backing SBCL’s expansion, we are not only scaling a competitive business but also contributing to Ghana’s broader industrialisation agenda,” he said.

For his part, the Chief Executive of SBCL, Derrick Asamoah Boahen welcomed the partnership highlighting SBCL’s position as a preferred automotive component in West Africa.

With increased capacity and automation, we can better serve the automotive, logistics, mining, and agriculture sectors while providing more affordable and quality alternatives to imported products,” he stated.

The Electoral Commission chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, has declared President Museveni a duly nominated candidate to seek reelection in the 2026 polls.
Mr Museveni, 81, arrived at the EC headquarters in Lweza, Entebbe Road at 10 am on Tuesday, accompanied by the First Lady, Janet Museveni and was received by several senior government officials, including Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja and Speaker of Parliament Anita Among.
The president, who has been in power since 1986 is the first candidate to be nominated for the presidential race that has attracted several other aspirants, including National Unity Platform (NUP) principal, Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine who challenged him in the 2021 polls.
After scrutinising his academic documents and nomination papers, Justice Byabakama said Mr Museveni had “fulfilled all the requirements of the nomination as stipulated in the Presidential Elections Act.”
“I want to thank the NRM members for again trusting me with the chairmanship of the party and flagbearer in the 2026 General Election. Where we are moving to now, is to convince the people of Uganda about what we have achieved and what we are planning to do in the next term,” Mr Museveni said in his maiden speech after nomination.
According to him, Uganda’s GDP has doubled in the last five years.
“I’m told in this term, Uganda’s GDP has doubled. In the last kisanji (term), our GDP was $34 billion. It is now $66 billion. To double the GDP in just one term is no mean achievement,” the president added.
Mr Museveni also decried the increasing level of corruption, crime and impunity in the country and pledged to deal with it in the next term as he embarks on what he described “double mission.”
“There’s peace in the country; there’s some crime, corruption and impunity. The NRM structure should come out and help expose criminals. If we work on corruption, criminality and impunity, it will help our people also enjoy the transformation that is happening. It will be a double mission in the coming kisanji,” he said.
He said his government will continue empowering the middle class and the business people “and make sure all Ugandans, including peasants benefit.”
Other aspirants to be nominated today are Mr Robert Kasibante of the National Peasants Party, and Mr Elton John Mabirizi of the Conservative Party.
NUP’s Robert Kyagulanyi and Mr Nathan Nandala Mafabi of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) will be nominated tomorrow, September 24.
Who is candidate Yoweri Museveni?
Born Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa on September 15, 1944, in Ntungamo District, he today ranks among the world’s longest-serving non-royal heads of state.
He has ruled Uganda since January 1986, making him the third-longest serving leader in that category. Museveni was raised in a cattle-keeping family of the Hima ethnic group. His father, Amos Kaguta, reportedly served in the King’s African Rifles during World War II, an experience said to have inspired the family name “Museveni”— derived from the Swahili for “seventh,” in reference to his father’s battalion. He studied at Kyamate Primary School, Mbarara High School, and Ntare School before joining the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, where he pursued Political Science and Economics.
There, under the influence of radical scholars like Walter Rodney, Museveni was drawn to Marxist and pan-Africanist thought. He founded the University Students’ African Revolutionary Front and even trained with FRELIMO fighters in Mozambique.
His thesis explored Frantz Fanon’s ideas on revolutionary violence—foreshadowing his later reliance on armed struggle. In the 1970s, Mr Museveni entered Uganda’s turbulent politics, first fighting to oust Idi Amin and later founding the Front for National Salvation (Fronasa). He played a key role in the 1979 Uganda–Tanzania war that toppled Amin.
Following the disputed 1980 elections—where his Uganda Patriotic Movement lost to Milton Obote’s Uganda People’s Congress—Museveni declared the process fraudulent and launched the five-year Bush War.
His popular Resistance Army later merged with other rebel factions to form the National Resistance Army (NRA) and its political wing, the National Resistance Movement (NRM). On January 29, 1986, the NRA captured Kampala, ending the short-lived Tito Okello junta. Sworn in as President, Mr Museveni promised a “fundamental change” built on his Ten-Point Programme of democracy, unity, and self-reliance. His early years drew praise.
Backed by the International Monitory Fund (IMF), his reforms stabilised Uganda’s battered economy, restored investor confidence, and initially improved human rights. But stability came at a cost. For nearly two decades, his government fought Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army in northern Uganda—a war that displaced millions and drew allegations of abuses by both rebels and state forces.
Regionally, Mr Museveni positioned himself as a military power-broker, intervening in Rwanda’s civil war, the Congo conflicts, and other Great Lakes crises. This earned him recognition as a strategic ally of the West, while also attracting criticism for allegedly fueling instability. At home, Mr Museveni steadily consolidated power. Term limits were scrapped in 2005; age limits followed in 2017, paving the way for open-ended rule.
Once hailed as a reformist, he has since faced criticism for shrinking civic space, repressing dissent, and militarising civilian life. The 2021 election, which gave him a sixth term with 58.6 percent, was condemned by observers after reports of ballot-stuffing, arrests, violence, and a nationwide Internet blackout.
Despite delivering macroeconomic stability, Uganda struggles with corruption, high youth unemployment, and slow social progress. In 2025, the country ranks 163rd in nominal GDP per capita and 157th on the Human Development Index. Now 81, Mr Museveni continues to cast himself as Uganda’s guarantor of peace and independence.
To supporters, he is a liberator who brought stability. To critics, he is an entrenched autocrat clinging to power. Despite repeated calls for succession planning, he has not indicated a clear heir, leaving uncertainty about the country’s political future.

Supporters of opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), who are demonstrating against police harassment and abuse of power, have stormed the Jubilee House to present their petition to the government.
The protest, dubbed ‘Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna’, which literally means “we fear no intimidation,” began at the Obra Spot in Accra on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
Scores of NPP supporters came out in their large numbers to join the leadership of the party, including Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organiser and Salam Mustapha, the Youth Organiser, to march through the principal street to the Jubilee House.
Upon arrival at the Jubilee House, Ghana’s seat of government, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, handed the petition to the Chief of Staff at the office of the Vice President, Alex Segbefia.
The members of the opposition party drew the government’s attention to what they described as a state-sponsored harassment and abuse of power.
They demanded that the government and security agencies respect citizens’ rights and refrain from using excessive force or intimidation tactics.
“We are here at the Jubilee House, the seat of government. The New Patriotic Party, through the youth wing of the party, staged this mammoth protest against what we will describe as a deliberate weaponisation of state institutions against citizens purposely to harass members of the opposition,” he said.
“So, the party is fully behind the national youth wing, and today, we are here to present to the president, John Dramani Mahama,” he added.

The NPP’s demonstration was organised after the recent arrest of some of its key party functionaries and social media activists.
Among the individuals arrested was Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Chairman Wontumi was arrested and detained by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged financial crimes and illegal mining.
Aside from Wontumi, the Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, was arrested over what the police described as “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace.”
In addition to the two regional chairmen, some social media activists of the NPP were also arrested.
Adomako, aka Sir Obama Pokuase, Prince Ofori and Yayra Abiwu, were arrested in connection to threats against the President and misinformation.
In a related development, YEN.com.gh reported that Abronye DC broken his silence after being released from police custody over his allegations against the IGP.
The outspoken politician alleged that officers demanded his phone and questioned him about 15 houses and two companies that he owns.
Despite the grilling, the outspoken NPP chairman said no one could silence him, including the NDC government.

The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation is ensuring that all public health facilities in the company’s catchment areas are better equipped to meet the needs of the local population.
To this end, the Foundation has partnered with Project C.U.R.E to ship three 40-foot containers of essential medical equipment and supplies valued at $793,491.75.
Project C.U.R.E is the world’s largest distributor of donated medical equipment and supplies.
It assembles customised consignment of medical equipment and consumables tailored to the requirements of Gold Fields’ host community facilities.
The consignment included hospital beds, incubators, anaesthesia machines, imaging devices, and a wide range of consumables such as gloves, syringes, and sterile dressings.
The equipment are to be distributed to some health facilities in Tarkwa-Nsuaem and Prestea-Huni Valley Municipalities, in the Western Region.
At a brief ceremony in Tarkwa to begin the distribution process, Executive Secretary of the Foundation, Abdel Razak Yakubu, noted that the support formed part of Gold Fields’ Expanded Access to Quality Healthcare initiative under its Group Legacy programme.
“This partnership was designed to strengthen healthcare delivery across the Tarkwa Nsuaem and Prestea-Huni Valley Municipalities,” he disclosed.
He noted that over the last two years, the Foundation has also screened 8,845 people through community health outreach and renewed the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) of about 2,889 residents.
In an address read on her behalf, the Western Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Marion Okoh-Owusu, thanked Gold Fields Foundation for the initiative.
She was very optimistic that the equipment would enhance healthcare delivery in the beneficiary health facilities.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Issah Taylor, who doubles as a Trustee of the Foundation, indicated that the move reflected the translation of mineral wealth into community well-being.
He added, “As your MP, I reaffirm my commitment to championing investments in health, education, and infrastructure.”
“…True development must touch the daily lives of ordinary people in Tarkwa-Nsuaem,” he pointed out.
The Gyaasehene of Apinto Divisional Area, Nana Dr. Adarkwa Bediako III, commended the Foundation for supporting health facilities in the two municipalities. He was hopeful that the equipment would go a long way to ensure effective healthcare delivery.

President John Mahama has nominated Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the country’s next Chief Justice.
The President has written to the Council of State seeking its advice on his choice of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie to lead the judiciary.
The statement described him as a jurist who has “served with diligence and integrity” and made “invaluable contributions to the development of Ghanaian jurisprudence.”
According to the Presidency, he has earned the respect of the Bench, the Bar, and the wider legal fraternity for his intellect, impartiality, and unwavering commitment to justice.
His wealth of experience and long service on the Bench were cited as qualities that make him eminently qualified for the high office.
The development follows the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office for stated misbehaviour.
Her dismissal was based on the findings of a constitutional committee established under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who has been acting in the role since April 2025 after the suspension of Justice Torkornoo, is currently the most senior judge on Ghana’s Supreme Court.
He was appointed to the apex court in June 2008 by then-President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Born on 26 December 1956, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie had his basic education at Goaso before continuing to Konongo Odumase Secondary School, where he obtained both his Ordinary and Advanced Level certificates.
He studied law at the University of Ghana and later at the Ghana Law School, where he was called to the Bar in 1983.
He rose through the ranks of the judiciary, serving as a Circuit Court Judge in Kumasi, a High Court Judge at Duayaw Nkwanta, and later as an Appeals Court Judge before his elevation to the Supreme Court.
If his nomination is approved, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie will officially take over as head of the Judiciary, steering the institution at a crucial time following the dramatic removal of his predecessor.
The Council of State is expected to advise the President in the coming days, after which Parliament will take up the nomination for vetting and approval.

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has outlined his vision to drive Ghana’s economic growth using what he describes as the successful “Asian model” of development.
Speaking about how countries like South Korea, India, and the UAE built strong, competitive economies after his vetting on Tuesday, September 23, the outspoken politician and businessman emphasised the importance of government-backed private sector development through strategic funding and accountability.
“The Asian model, what they did at that time, when they decided to compete with Europe and America, was that they identified potential talents and potential businessmen and funded their projects like Daewoo, Hyundai, Samsung,” Agyapong said.
He explained that governments in Asia made deliberate efforts to support promising entrepreneurs by offering structured financial backing, with strict checks to ensure that funds were used appropriately.
“They made sure, made conscious efforts to support them by giving them loans… The government then sends the money to the company manufacturing the raw materials… If you tell them the imports or your raw materials or whatever equipment you’re going to use will arrive in three months… they are there to inspect,” he added.
According to him, one of the biggest barriers to entrepreneurship in Ghana is the lack of access to capital. He believes that the government should play a proactive role in providing funding and then gradually stepping back once the business becomes profitable and self-sustaining.
“The most difficult part is the capital. So if the government supports you to get the capital and you run it well, you become a millionaire. This is how they’ve been able to expand their businesses,” he noted.
However, Agyapong stressed that financial support must be accompanied by strict accountability measures to prevent misuse.
“The government should be bold and also punish people who take the money,” he stated.

Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has opened up on the challenges he faces each time he prepares for his annual Rapperholic concert.
In an interview on YFM Kumasi on September 23, 2025, the rapper, who is set to stage his first Rapperholic concert in Kumasi, revealed that selecting which songs to perform is always a difficult task.
“One of the hardest things to do is to pick what song to perform. Because anytime there is rapperholic, we have the fans angry because they are not satisfied and are looking forward to a certain song.
“There are a lot of songs; it is a big catalog. If I try to perform every song, it is going to be hard. What I try to do is to show where I perform songs that we normally don’t,” he said.

Sarkodie further noted that although it’s tough to narrow down the list, his team is working to ensure that the final set list includes the favorites of fans.
“If you are not a fan of Sarkodie, you can’t say you haven’t heard ‘Can’t Let You Go’ and the other big songs. When we put such songs together, we have close to two hours.
He added that this year, his team, led by DJ Mensah, will be trying something different.
“This particular one, Mensah said we should put a list of songs we haven’t heard for a while. And we are getting feedback from the people and the songs they want to hear on stage,” he added.

President John Dramani Mahama has named Paul Baffoe Bonnie as the new Chief Justice of Ghana.

Early Life and Education
Paul Baffoe-Bonnie was born on 26 December 1956. He began his education at the Goaso Local Authority Primary and Middle Schools, completing his Middle School Leaving Certificate examinations in the late 1960s.
He attended Konongo Odumase Secondary School, where he obtained his GCE Ordinary Level and GCE Advanced Level certificates between 1969 and 1976. He proceeded to the University of Ghana and subsequently the Ghana School of Law.
While at law school, he was roommates with the late former NPP General Secretary Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John, and close friends with former Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah. He fondly described the three of them as forming “a trio of village law students.”
Legal Career
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie was called to the Bar in Ghana in 1983. He began his judicial career as a Circuit Court Judge in Kumasi and later served as a High Court Judge in Duayaw Nkwanta. He was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 2006.
In June 2008, President John Agyekum Kufuor appointed him as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana.
Notable Case
In 2013, he was part of the panel of Supreme Court Judges that adjudicated the landmark election petition filed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which sought to annul approximately four million votes from the 2012 general elections due to alleged irregularities. The petition was ultimately dismissed by the court.
Personal Life
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie hails from Sewua in the Bosomtwe District through his father, Opanyin Baffoe-Bonnie, and from Breman in Kumasi through his mother, Ama Kyerewaa.
He is married to Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, who serves as the Director-General of Prisons.
He is also the brother of the late Kwasi Sainti Baffoe-Bonnie, the founder of Network Broadcasting Company Limited, which operates Radio Gold.

Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams at the lunch of CAVB Zone III Club Championship
The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has pledged his full support for the CAVB Zone III Volleyball Club Championship during its launch on September 23, 2025, at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel.
The tournament, which will be hosted in Accra, is scheduled to begin on March 1 and conclude on March 8, 2026.
The president of Kalibi Sporting Club and politician, Bernard Mornah, called on the sports minister and the government to build gyms and other infrastructural facilities to support volleyball competitions in Ghana.
“Honourable minister, let me say that volleyball deserves your attention. If you give us even one-twentieth of the support that the Black Stars receive, not football entirely, just the Black Stars, volleyball will reach a level we can be proud of. While football is getting AstroTurfs, we are very disappointed that we can’t get gyms for volleyball. When it rains, we are left at the mercy of the weather. So, minister and IGP, at least build two gyms for us,” he said.
The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, also vowed to invest heavily in volleyball and other sporting disciplines to improve their prospects in the country.
He explained that this initiative was one of the reasons the Black Stars’ budget for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers was reduced, in order to free up revenue to support other sporting disciplines.
“In every community, we should have a volleyball court because it does not require much space. We can even have a multipurpose court for volleyball, netball, basketball, and others. But the lands for these projects have been taken by people who should have known better.
“Sports is a huge area we can invest in to generate billions and trillions. As a minister, I am working to ensure that all sporting disciplines receive the support they need even though football exists. That explains why the Black Stars’ budget was slashed. Some people didn’t understand, but there is a need for other sports to benefit from the national cake,” the minister stated.
The volleyball tournament will feature 48 volleyball clubs from West African countries including Ghana, Burkina Faso, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Benin, Niger, Togo, and Nigeria.
Other dignitaries present at the event included Greater Accra Volleyball Chairman, Alfred Offei; Zone III President, Ali Yaro; and representatives from the Ghana Police Service.

The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation is ensuring that all public health facilities in the company’s catchment areas are better equipped to meet the needs of the local population.
To this end, the Foundation has partnered with Project C.U.R.E to ship three 40-foot containers of essential medical equipment and supplies valued at $793,491.75.
Project C.U.R.E is the world’s largest distributor of donated medical equipment and supplies.
It assembles customised consignment of medical equipment and consumables tailored to the requirements of Gold Fields’ host community facilities.
The consignment included hospital beds, incubators, anaesthesia machines, imaging devices, and a wide range of consumables such as gloves, syringes, and sterile dressings.
The equipment are to be distributed to some health facilities in Tarkwa-Nsuaem and Prestea-Huni Valley Municipalities, in the Western Region.
At a brief ceremony in Tarkwa to begin the distribution process, Executive Secretary of the Foundation, Abdel Razak Yakubu, noted that the support formed part of Gold Fields’ Expanded Access to Quality Healthcare initiative under its Group Legacy programme.
“This partnership was designed to strengthen healthcare delivery across the Tarkwa Nsuaem and Prestea-Huni Valley Municipalities,” he disclosed.
He noted that over the last two years, the Foundation has also screened 8,845 people through community health outreach and renewed the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) of about 2,889 residents.
In an address read on her behalf, the Western Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Marion Okoh-Owusu, thanked Gold Fields Foundation for the initiative.
She was very optimistic that the equipment would enhance healthcare delivery in the beneficiary health facilities.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Issah Taylor, who doubles as a Trustee of the Foundation, indicated that the move reflected the translation of mineral wealth into community well-being.
He added, “As your MP, I reaffirm my commitment to championing investments in health, education, and infrastructure.”
“…True development must touch the daily lives of ordinary people in Tarkwa-Nsuaem,” he pointed out.
The Gyaasehene of Apinto Divisional Area, Nana Dr. Adarkwa Bediako III, commended the Foundation for supporting health facilities in the two municipalities. He was hopeful that the equipment would go a long way to ensure effective healthcare delivery.
