MUSIGA Visits Minister –

A delegation from the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), along with representatives of the families of the late music legends Teddy Osei and Naa Amanua, have paid a visit to the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie.

The meeting was attended by MUSIGA executives and renowned musician Divine Drummer Okyerema Asante.

The visit was to inform the minister about the upcoming funeral rites for Teddy Osei of Osibisa fame and Naa Amanua, two iconic figures in Ghana’s music industry.

Teddy Osei, a co-founder of the influential afro-rock group Osibisa, and Naa Amanua, a celebrated traditional musician, have left an indelible mark on Ghanaian music and culture.

During the meeting, the delegation briefed the minister on the planned ceremonies and cultural events that will honour the lives and contributions of these music legends.

They emphasised the significance of these events in celebrating Ghana’s rich cultural heritage and the impact of the late musicians on the country’s music scene.

Madam Gomashie expressed her condolences to the families and acknowledged the immense contributions of Teddy Osei and Naa Amanua to Ghana’s cultural landscape.

She pledged the ministry’s support for the funeral rites, recognising the importance of these events in promoting cultural tourism and celebrating Ghanaian music globally.

The minister also highlighted the ministry’s commitment to fostering a vibrant cultural environment that honours the legacy of Ghana’s music icons while promoting the country’s creative arts sector.

The MUSIGA President, Bessa Simons, congratulated the minister on her appointment and expressed the appreciation of the families for the cordial reception.

The meeting concluded with a call for collaboration between the Tourism Ministry, MUSIGA, and the families to ensure that the funeral rites are a fitting tribute to these musical legends and contribute to the growth of Ghana’s tourism and cultural industries.

The late Amadu Sulley

 

Former Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Amadu Sulley passed on yesterday in Accra.

His burial yesterday at the Madina Public Cemetery attracted many sympathisers from the Islamic community.

Early Life and Education

Amadu Sulley had his elementary school education at Ghana National School (now Richard Akwei Memorial School) in Accra from where he proceeded to the Accra Academy and Opoku Ware School for the Ordinary Level and Advanced Level certificates respectively.

He continued to the University of Ghana and studied for a Diploma in Statistics, obtained in 1985. He obtained a Post Graduate Certificate and Diploma in Public Administration at Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in 1993 and 1995 respectively. His project work was on the Ghanaian Electoral System.

He was appointed as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission in 2012 by then president, John Evans Atta Mills.

He had previously served as the Director of Research, Monitoring and Evaluation at the same Commission until his promotion to the rank as Deputy Chairperson. Sulley’s appointment to the rank of a Deputy Chairperson was the first time a career electoral personnel had been appointed to that high rank.

He served as the Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations until his dismissal in June 2018 for allegedly illegally transferring votes during the 2016 general election.

A State of the Nation Address: More Rhetoric, Less Action?

President John Dramani Mahama delivered his state of the nation address, outlining his government’s vision and plans for the country. However, after listening to the speech, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu. The president’s words, though eloquent, lacked the concrete actions and plans that Ghanaians so desperately crave.

As a nation, we are at a critical juncture. Our economy is struggling, our youth are crying out for employment opportunities, and our infrastructure is in dire need of upgrading. In this context, the president’s speech was disappointing, to say the least.

Rather than offering tangible solutions to our problems, the president’s speech was replete with promises and rhetoric. We were told of grand plans to revitalize the economy, create jobs, and improve our infrastructure. But, sadly, these plans were not backed by concrete actions or timelines.

Furthermore, the president’s speech failed to inspire the youth of our nation. As a government that came into office on the promise of creating employment opportunities, it is ironic that they are now sacking already employed youths. This is not the leadership we need.

In less than six weeks in office, the government has reportedly borrowed an excess of Ghs 59 billion, a staggering amount that raises serious concerns about our nation’s financial future. The lack of transparency and accountability in this borrowing spree is alarming, to say the least.

The president also failed to address the recent tragedy in Obuasi, where 15 innocent Ghanaian youth lost their lives in galamsey-related activities. This incident highlights the urgent need for the government to take decisive action against illegal mining and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

Moreover, the government’s use of state agencies to harass individuals lawlessly is a worrying trend that undermines our democracy and the rule of law. The return of “dumsor” (power outages) is another indication of the government’s inability to address our energy needs.

In conclusion, the president’s state of the nation address was a missed opportunity. Rather than offering a clear vision for our nation’s future, it was a rehashing of old promises and rhetoric. We deserve better. We deserve a government that is committed to taking concrete actions to address our problems, rather than just paying lipious service to them.

 We need a government that is committed to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law. Anything less is unacceptable.

President Mahama’s state of the nation address has left many Ghanaians underwhelmed and questioning the government’s commitment to real change.

Ghana’s cocoa industry is in severe financial distress, with the Ghana Cocoa Board (Cocobod) accumulating GH¢32.5 billion in debt, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has disclosed.

He warned that this growing financial burden, coupled with major revenue losses, threatens the livelihoods of thousands of cocoa farmers.

Speaking at the National Economic Dialogue (NED) 2025 in Accra on Monday, March 3, Dr Forson revealed that cocoa production has declined by nearly 50% over the past three years, making it difficult for Cocobod to meet its commitments.

“In the 2023/2024 crop season, Cocobod failed to supply 330,000 tons of cocoa for its contracted deliveries, resulting in huge financial losses,” he said.

He further explained that Ghanaian farmers are losing $4,000 per ton of cocoa sold due to restrictive contract agreements.

“Because of the ROVER contracts, we cannot offer farmers competitive prices, which has driven up smuggling to Togo and Côte d’Ivoire,” he added.

Dr Forson also expressed concerns over Cocobod’s unbudgeted expenditures, describing them as a major risk to public finances.

He revealed that GH¢9.7 billion of Cocobod’s debt is due for payment by September 2025, and urged a complete restructuring of the institution to protect farmers and restore financial stability.

Ghanaian music producer and artiste manager, Kwesi Ernest, has expressed disappointment in President Akufo-Addo’s act of appointing his daughter, Gyankroma, as the CEO of the Creative Arts Agency during his tenure.

In a discussion on Peace FM on March 1, 2025, Kwesi Ernest stated that one of the biggest mistakes Akufo-Addo made while in office was appointing his daughter to attain that position.

He emphasised that Gyankroma made no significant impact while in office, and her appointment was needless.

“One of the biggest mistakes of former President Akufo-Addo was appointing his daughter, Gyankroma Akufo-Addo, to become the Creative Arts Agency CEO, and that is the truth. It was wrong. Tell me one clear, evident example of her accomplishments and the work she has done for the agency since her appointment,” he said.

Kwesi Ernest further indicated that Gyankroma had little knowledge about the agency she headed and that her decision to pack office stationery before exiting was unfounded.

“None of all these happened, and I’m not even sure she knows most of the practitioners in the industry. Because her father was in power, she was protected, and so our complaints were not heard. But the truth is just one. Someone became a director of the agency, and when it was time for her to exit the office, she packed out every item from the place,” he said.

Kwesi Ernest’s comment comes amid reports that Gyankroma Akufo-Addo took everything from her office, including chairs, computers, and other stationery, when she left.

Government gets GH¢18 billion bids, accepts GH¢7.4 billion at 20.7% interest rate

Interest rates on treasury bills have declined to 20.7% in the government’s recent auction on February 28, 2025.

Demand for short-term instruments has surged in recent weeks, with the government consistently recording over 100% subscription rates.

In this week’s auction, the government secured an oversubscription of 181%, receiving bids worth GH¢18.25 billion but accepting GH¢7.42 billion. A total of GH¢10.83 billion in bids was rejected.

The auction results released by the Bank of Ghana showed that the 91-day and 364-day treasury bills attracted the most interest.

However, the 364-day bill received bids worth GH¢8.72 billion, but only GH¢2.02 billion was accepted.

The 91-day bill received bids totaling GH¢6.21 billion, of which GH¢2.38 billion was accepted.

Additionally, the 182-day bill saw tenders amounting to GH¢3.32 billion, with GH¢3.02 billion accepted.

Meanwhile, interest rates have continued to decline over the past few weeks:

• The 91-day bill now stands at 20.79%, down from 24.47% last week.

• The 182-day bill has fallen to 22.98%, compared to 25.38% previously.

• The 364-day bill declined from 27.29% to 22.69%.

In the previous auction, held last week, the government sold GH¢9.63 billion out of GH¢20.50 billion in total bids.

The recent surge in demand for short-term instruments signals strong investor confidence. The government’s decision to reject excess bids suggests either a cautious borrowing approach or an effort to avoid high interest rates.

Meanwhile, the government plans to borrow GH¢5.74 billion in its next auction. Treasury bills remain its primary source of borrowing as it seeks to regain access to the international capital market.

The Ghana Police Service have arrested the girlfriend of Daniel Febiri, also known as Braima, the prime suspect in Nana Pooley’s murder case, Asante Kotoko have confirmed.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Asante Kotoko stated that the girlfriend, identified as Grace Siaw, has been remanded for aiding Braima’s escape.

Braima, who remains at large, is believed to be in Senegal after fleeing through Ivory Coast following his designation as a wanted person by the police.

According to Kotoko, Grace Siaw is set to reappear in court today, March 3, 2025, after an initial appearance on February 25, 2025.

“The police have in their custody one Grace Siaw, a girlfriend of Daniel Febiri, a.k.a. Braima, a.k.a. Ashi, a.k.a. Rasta, who concealed the suspect between February 4 and 17 and assisted him in fleeing to Senegal through Côte d’Ivoire. She was brought to court on February 25 and was remanded. She is scheduled to appear in court today, and we are awaiting proceedings,” Kotoko stated.

Meanwhile, the family of Braima have expressed their commitment to assisting the police in his arrest.

“The family is saying if he has done it, he has to face the consequences. So, the family is not supporting him in running away. No. We are all searching, helping, and looking everywhere to locate him so that he can explain his reasons for doing this,” Braima’s brother told Sunyani-based Ark FM.

“If he did it, then he must come forward and tell the whole world why. We are hearing different things in Nsoatre, and many people thought I was the one Ghana Police arrested,” he added.

Background

Pooley, a staunch Asante Kotoko fan, was stabbed to death during a league game between Nsoatreman and Kotoko on Sunday, February 2, 2025, in Nsoatre.

After multiple arrests in connection with the case, Police declared Braima as the prime suspect in the case.

Despite growing international pressure, the Democratic Republic of Congo is standing firm on its decision not to have direct talks with the M23 rebel group that has made major advances in the east of the country in recent months.

Last week, the UK government added to calls for the group to be part of an “inclusive dialogue” to help find a political solution to the conflict.

But in an interview with the BBC, DR Congo Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka said her government wants to negotiate with neighbouring Rwanda, which it accuses of backing the M23.

At least 8,500 people have been killed since fighting escalated in January, according to the Congolese authorities.

Hundreds of thousands have also been forced from their homes amid the chaos triggered by the fighting, in which UN experts and others see Rwanda as having a key role.

“The fact remains that the aggressor of the territorial integrity and of the sovereignty of the Democratic Republic of Congo is Rwanda,” Suminwa Tuluka said, citing a UN experts’ report from last year that stated that between 3,000 and 4,000 Rwandan troops had crossed into Congolese territory and were fighting alongside the M23.

Peace talks brokered by Angola hit a deadlock last December after Rwanda demanded that the Congolese government talk directly to the M23.

The rebel group then advanced swiftly, taking control of the cities of Goma and Bukavu in January and February.

At a joint East and Southern African mediation effort last month, regional leaders called for a ceasefire, the exit of “uninvited foreign armed forces” from Congolese territory and also urged for direct negotiations between “state and non-state parties… including M23”.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame did not deny the presence of his troops in DR Congo when asked about it. “I don’t know,” he said in a CNN interview.

The conflict across the border has seen his country, often viewed as a darling of the West, now lose favour fast across the board.

Pressure is mounting on it to withdraw its forces from Congolese soil.

“But it has not yet effectively done so,” Suminwa Tuluka said.

She welcomed US sanctions imposed on Rwandan government minister James Kabarebe, saying they would help “put pressure on the aggressors”. Rwanda, however, dismissed them as “unjustified and ineffective in resolving the crisis”.

The European Commission for its part has suspended “defence consultations” and placed “under review” a memorandum of understanding it signed last year with Rwanda on raw materials.

The Congolese prime minister welcomed the EU Commission’s decisions, saying that “the illegal exploitation of resources – that is one of the causes of the conflict”.

DR Congo accuses Rwanda of illegally exploiting its mineral deposits in the east of the country, which Rwanda denies.

Adding to the chorus against Rwanda, the UK said last week that among other measures it would pause aid except the money meant for the poorest and most vulnerable groups, unless the country withdraws its troops, engages “meaningfully” in talks and a ceasefire is achieved.

Rwanda described the decision as “punitive”, saying it was unreasonable to expect it to compromise its national security.

The Congolese prime minister said that Rwanda was ignoring all the calls to withdraw its troops.

“So, who is standing in the way of [resolving the conflict]? It is not the Congolese government,” she argued.

Rwanda has previously acknowledged deploying its forces “defensively and offensively” during the ongoing conflict, claiming the right to defend its territory.

It has also repeatedly accused the Congolese government of harbouring and working with the militant group the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), whose members include fighters from the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

Asked about that, Suminwa Tuluka denied that the Congolese army works with FDLR rebels, but said her country would engage in a process of “neutralising” the militants.

When it came to what would solve the problem if direct talks with the M23 were ruled out, the prime minister said that along with negotiating with Rwanda, the answer was simple for what would guarantee a ceasefire.

“Ensure that Rwandan troops withdraw from Congolese territory and that their M23 stop killing the Congolese populations,” she said.

Lies! Court hasn’t asked LilWin to pay GH¢300,000

Ghanaian actress, Martha Akomah, has dispelled reports regarding a court order urging actor LilWin to pay a fine of GH¢300,000.

Speaking in an interview on Nhyira FM, shared on Instagram on March 2, 2025, Martha Akomah, who is still dealing with her lawsuit against LilWin, stated that such reports are false and that the court has not ordered the actor to pay any GH¢300,000.

She emphasised that she doesn’t need money from the actor and, therefore, all she prays for the court to do in her favour is to secure a public apology and money to settle her legal fees.

“It is not true; it is sad, and I don’t know who has been writing those stories and giving such captions. When we went to court, the judge ordered them to write an apology and present it at our next hearing on April 1, 2025. If the court is convinced with the apology, he would therefore come out and publicly apologise.

“You may recall that I once was granted an interview on Peace FM, where I said that I didn’t need money from LilWin. All I want is a public apology. Maybe what we would take from him is our legal fees. It is not good for someone to spread false news about you. I want him to do the right thing so people would know that the law works in this country,” she said.

Martha Akomah further clarified that LilWin’s initial apology was not what she was expecting from the actor.

She added that the actor’s apology does not show any sign of remorse.

“All those who listened and watched his apology said that it did not go well because he didn’t even trust any of his statements. So, we want the right thing to be done, and that is all.

Background

On February 14, 2024, Martha Ankomah filed a lawsuit against LilWin for some defamatory comments he made about her in a viral video.

In the video, LilWin is heard making disparaging comments about Ankomah’s significance in the film industry.

The actress subsequently established that LilWin’s statements have since damaged her reputation and that of the brand she represents.

She asserted that LilWin falsely accused her of looking down on Kumawood actors and refusing to collaborate with them due to perceived poor-quality storylines.

Martha Ankomah’s demands

The actress is seeking several forms of relief, including:

Compensatory damages for harm to her reputation.

Aggravated damages for the malicious nature of the statements.

An apology and retraction of the defamatory words.

An injunction preventing LilWin from making further defamatory statements.

Settling of legal costs.

Four talented Ghanaian artistes, Bessa Simons, Efya, Kelvyn Boy and Clemento Suarez will be storming Alliance Française in Accra to thrill music fans at the grand launch of the much-anticipated Adamfopa Talent Quest Show, a music talent reality contest.

Scheduled for May RAM Media Concepts, organisers of the event, are stopping at nothing to ensure that the artistes make the launch a memorable one.

The main event, which will take place in France, seeks to foster artistic collaboration and strengthen cultural ties between Africa and Europe.

It also aims to discover and nurture the creative talents of young Africans born and raised in the diaspora.

The four performing artistes are expected to rock the stage alongside the legendary dancehall artiste Samini, Jupitar among others.

Bessa Simons, Efya, Kelvyn Boy, Clemento Suarez  among others billed to rock the event, are renowned for their electrifying live performances and captivating stage presence.

They are expected to perform most of their classic hits songs to entertain invited guests at the event.

The launch of the Adamfopa Talent Quest in Ghana, forms part of activities lined up to celebratethis year’s Ghana Month.

According to the organisers, the event would be streamed live on some selected social media platforms for fans who could not make it to the launch ceremony.

With its mission to empower young African talents and bridge cultural gaps, the Adamfopa Talent Quest promises to be a groundbreaking initiative in the creative arts industry in Europe.

The CEO of RAM Media Concepts, Mr. Augustine Mark, told BEATWAVES in an interview that his outfit has created a platform for young people to develop their talents and prepare themselves for mainstream music success.

“With Adamfopa Talent Quest, we are giving other African nationals living in Europe the opportunity to showcase their talents,” he added.

Majority of Ghana’s economic challenges are self-inflicted

The Chairman of the National Economic Dialogue, Dr. Ishmael Yamson, has disclosed that the journey to reset Ghana’s economy, as promised by President John Dramani Mahama, will not be an easy task.

According to him, the process of rebuilding the economy will be rough, and filled with risks and frustrations from both internal and external sources. However, he expressed confidence that with President Mahama’s determined leadership, the initiative will yield positive results, as the people of Ghana are ready to support this vision.

Speaking at the National Economic Dialogue under the theme “Resetting Ghana: Building the Economy We Want Together,” on Monday, March 3, Dr. Yamson emphasized that the majority of the country’s economic challenges are homegrown and self-inflicted.

He noted that despite the magnitude of these issues, they can be resolved through collective efforts by both the leadership and the citizens.

He further urged the public to take responsibility for shaping the nation’s future, stressing the importance of unity and determination in overcoming the country’s economic difficulties.

“…The sad truth is that the overwhelming majority of our problems are homegrown and self-inflicted. Only our leaders and the people of Ghana can and must resolve these issues. Let us take responsibility for resetting our destiny with our own hands.

“The journey to reset Ghana will not be easy. It will be rough, full of risks and frustrations from within and outside. However, with the determined leadership you have promised and the ownership you take, you shall succeed.

“Besides, there are many Ghanaians who are ready to stand by you and work with you to deliver your bold vision,” he stated.

The newly appointed Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority, James Gardiner, has assured that his team is working hard to settle in and get things rolling quickly.

In an interview with Joy FM’s Kwame Dadzie on March 1, 2025, Gardiner described the appointment as an honour and pledged to work diligently alongside his immediate boss, Kafui Danku, to advance the goals of the film industry and the nation at large.

He added that he is already collaborating with industry players and stakeholders to achieve both short-term and long-term objectives.

“There’s a lot of work to be done, and as such, we’ve already marked out plans to meet and engage with some of the industry players and stakeholders to rub our minds together on how we can together work as a unit and achieve our short-term goals and our long-term goals as well.

“We are working very hard to settle in so we can set the ball rolling as quickly as we can. So help us God,” he said.

The actor, who shares a long-standing professional relationship with Kafui Danku in the acting space, expressed confidence in their ability to steer the NFA in the right direction.

“We are willing and ready to fill the big shoes of the office and to continue to drive the vehicle towards the right direction for the betterment of our industry and also the nation as a whole,” Gardiner stated.

Although some individuals are protesting it, the appointments of Kafui Danku and James Gardiner have been celebrated as a step toward strengthening Ghana’s film industry, with many anticipating innovative strategies and collaborative efforts under their leadership.

Meanwhile, the National Film Authority is expected to unveil its strategic plans in the coming weeks as it seeks to elevate Ghana’s film industry to new heights.

Finance Minister, Dr Ato Forson, has emphasised the urgent need for comprehensive economic reforms to ensure the country achieves upper middle-income status before the year 2038.

Speaking at the National Economic Dialogue held at the Accra International Conference Centre, Dr Forson cautioned that without ambitious measures, Ghana is unlikely to attain this status until after 2025.

Dr Forson stated, “Without comprehensive reforms, unfortunately, Ghana will only achieve upper middle-income status after the year 2025, and we cannot wait until 2050 before we become an upper middle-income country.”

The Minister highlighted that introducing well-structured and ambitious reforms is imperative for the nation’s economic progress.

He underscored the government’s commitment to implementing these reforms to reset and strengthen Ghana’s economy, paving the way for sustainable growth and development.

“We have no choice but to introduce measures to reset our economy. If we are to do well and introduce very ambitious reforms, Ghana will indeed become an upper middle-income country before the year 2038,” Dr. Forson added.

The National Economic Dialogue has brought together policymakers, economists, business leaders, and civil society organisations to deliberate on key economic strategies.

The discussions aim to shape policies that will drive long-term economic stability and growth.

Musician Mzbel has confirmed that gospel artist Sonnie Badu has finally repaid a long-standing debt of $300, bringing an end to a nearly decade-long financial dispute between the two.

In a video circulating online, Mzbel revealed that after publicly disclosing that Sonnie Badu owed her money, a member of his team reached out to settle the debt.

However, the payment was not only the initial amount of $300 but also an additional sum. “After I revealed that Sonnie owed me, someone from his team reached out and paid the money. They even paid more than the initial amount. The payment was supposed to be GH¢4,600, but they paid GH¢5,000. If they request the balance, I’m ready to send it back,” Mzbel stated in the video.

The announcement follows a viral interview on February 26, where Mzbel expressed her frustration over Sonnie Badu’s failure to repay the debt, which she claimed dated back nearly nine years. In the interview, Mzbel shared that she had used her Visa card to cover a payment on Sonnie Badu’s behalf, with the understanding that he would reimburse her.

“He is owing me $300. Anyone who wants to know what happened should pay me, and I will tell them,” Mzbel said during the interview. She went on to explain that despite occasional reminders, Sonnie had often joked about repaying her but never followed through.

With the debt now settled, the matter appears to be resolved, putting an end to the long-standing financial dispute between the two musicians.

The scheduled sod-cutting for an ongoing Hajj Village project by President John Mahama has stoked controversy.

When word hit town about the scheduled ceremony on Friday, New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters and  former government ministers described the action as an attempt to ‘steal the project’ which, according to them, was started long before President Mahama’s second coming.

In his reaction, former Deputy Minister for Transport, Hassan Tampuli, expressed shock at the news that the President was going to cut the sod for the commencement of a project which is ongoing.

Hassan Tampuli, who was in charge of Aviation, stated on his Facebook page that the project is ongoing.

“Did I hear President John Mahama is going to cut sod for a new Hajj Village in Accra on Friday?” he asked rhetorically.

“This project has been ongoing since last year, and it is the initiative of the former Transport Minister Hon Kwaku Asiamah, with the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) and the Hajj Board as the implementing bodies,” he shared on Facebook.

The NPP did not see the need to make politics out of a sacred project as this, he added.

GACL, the post stated, “initiated this project sometime in 2017, 2018.”

“The contract was awarded to a contractor called Mawums for the construction of a new Hajj Village at a new site opposite the Action Chapel.

“The then Hajj Board wrote to GACL for the renovation of the current Hajj Village or provide an alternative and better facility for its operations. This request was brought to the attention of the then Minister, and he tasked the board and management of GACL to come up with a proposal on the way forward for the realisation of the project, hence the resort to a land swap arrangement with a private developer to construct the modern multi-purpose hajj facility at a new site in exchange for same value in kind (land at Airport City 2. This is what NDC claimed NPP had sold during 2024 campaigns).

“Contract was signed in the later part of 2024, and works began and has since continued. Anyone who understands construction will know that the works done there couldn’t have started from 7th January, 2025,” Mr. Tampuli disclosed.

For a project as this, it required GACL Board approval after the minister gave his approval for the deal, the post added.

It is on record that the Paul Adom Otchere-led Board gave the approval for the implementation of the project, the post stated.

“If the JM government says it’s their project, which Board gave the approval since JM has not constituted the GACL board yet?” he quizzed.

In his reaction, the former Chairman of the Hajj Board, Ben Abdallah Banda, also on his Facebook page, stated that “My attention has been drawn to the intended sod-cutting of the already ongoing construction of a Permanent Hajj Village at the Spintex Road stretch of the Airport lands, opposite the Action Chapel, Accra, which was commenced by the erstwhile NPP administration and I present the facts as follows:

“1. The process for the construction of this project was initiated by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-Bawumia Government as far back as 2017 through the then Minister for Aviation, the late Kofi Adda but later saw a monumental push from the former Minister for Transport, Hon. Kwaku Asiamah.

“This legacy of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-Bawumia Government is one that was seen as a sacred project based on its religious underpinnings, thereby avoiding any form of fanfare, pomp and pageantry in the name of sod-cutting.”

He, therefore, urged the current government to acknowledge the new Hajj Village construction currently ongoing as a legacy project of the erstwhile Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-Bawumia Government.

Meanwhile, the sod-cutting was undertaken by President Mahama last Friday as scheduled.

President John Dramani Mahama has shared his surprise over the swift conclusion of Ghana’s 2024 presidential election results.

According to Ghana Web, Speaking during a fellowship with clergy members in Kumasi on Sunday, March 2, 2025, Mahama reflected on the unexpected speed at which the results were known.

According to him, he was fast asleep on the morning of December 8, just a day after the elections, when he was woken up by a phone call from his main opponent, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. “I was woken from my sleep that my brother wants to talk to me,” Mahama said, describing his surprise.

Dr. Bawumia’s call was a concession, acknowledging Mahama’s lead in the tightly contested election. “He said my big brother, we fought a good fight…you have won, so I am calling to congratulate you,” Mahama recounted.

The 2024 presidential election, held on December 7, saw Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) win with 56.55% of the votes, amounting to 6,328,397 votes. His closest rival, Dr. Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), secured 41.61%, with 4,657,304 votes.

On December 8, even before the official results were announced by the Electoral Commission, Dr. Bawumia conceded defeat.

In a televised address, he congratulated Mahama and stated that his decision was aimed at maintaining peace and Ghana’s democratic integrity.

John Mahama was officially sworn in as Ghana’s president on January 7, 2025, alongside Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, marking a historic moment with Ghana’s first female vice president.

Waiting for specific tests to diagnose Abdul Mumin’s injury- Rayo Vallecano head coach

Rayo Vallecano head coach, Inigo Perez, has stated that more specific tests need to be run to properly diagnose the extent of injury Ghana defender Abdul Mumin Sulemana picked up recently.

The 26 year old had to be substituted in the 35 minute in Rayo’s 1-1 draw with Sevilla in the Spanish La Liga game played over this past weekend due to the injury.

Mumin’s injury comes ahead of Ghana Black Stars 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification games against Chad and Madagascar on March 21 and March 24 respectively.

He was one of two players to leave the game due to injury as Angolan attacking midfielder Randy Nteka also got substituted in the 26th minute because of an injury.

Speaking in the post-game interview, Perez pointed to the need to run further tests to determine to get more information on Mumin’s injury.

In the wake of President John Dramani Mahama appointing several individuals to oversee the affairs of the tourism and creative arts sector in his tenure, issues from a particular agency within the sector have emerged and are now being discussed.

Ghanaian broadcaster, Kwasi Aboagye, has alleged that the office of the Creative Arts Agency, previously headed by Gyankroma Akufo-Addo, has been emptied, with the real owners of the building taking over.

Speaking on the Peace FM Entertainment Review, Kwasi Aboagye claimed that Gyankroma, the daughter of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, removed everything from the office when she left, because she was said to have personally furnished the building.

He said the real owners of the building, the Bureau of Languages, have also reclaimed their property.

“The Creative Arts Agency was established in 2020 under Act 1048 during Akufo-Addo’s government. Gyankroma Akufo-Addo was in charge of the sector at that time till her father left office. Initially, their office was located near the Jubilee House, but later they were moved to another office in Kanda.

“Now, unfortunate reports are coming in, stating that since Gyankroma Akufo-Addo personally spent her own money to furnish that office, and now that her father is no longer in power and she is no longer the head of the Creative Arts Agency, she has packed everything out of the office. The real owners of the building, the Bureau of Languages, have also reclaimed their property,” he stated.

Seeing this as unacceptable, Kwasi Aboagye has questioned why the Creative Arts Agency, whose existence is backed by law, should have its office ‘cleared’ in such a manner.

“If we are in a country where the law allows us to establish an agency, and we do, is it right to pack everything out just because a particular government is leaving power?” he questioned.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus’ boycott of a three-day orientation workshop for Members of Parliament over cost concerns, describing it as unacceptable.

Speaking at the workshop on Monday, March 3, 2025, he urged the Minority Members of Parliament (MPs) to rise above political differences.

“Please don’t allow your political differences to enslave you. Don’t be also enslaved by our history. That’s one of the biggest challenges we have in this country,” he stated.

He emphasised that the selection of venues for such workshops is not partisan.

“The turbulence of Parliament once again has shown. I only saw a WhatsApp message last night that our colleagues, our brothers and sisters of the New Patriotic Party, have opted out, giving a reason that is completely unacceptable. There is good reason why we choose venues for this.

“There’s always a search party, and they go around, discuss with the various hospitalities, look at the cost components, the facilities, their suitability, the convenience of your movement. But there are other pressures on you, and there are score marks before we decide where to go. There’s no partisanship in this at all. This time around, the Parliamentary Service followed the same. That is what is done,” he noted.

Bagbin further elaborated on the venue selection process for the workshop.

“The final results are brought to the Speaker. And until I have a very good reason why it shouldn’t be at that place; I just give my [approval]. And to have 276 Members of Parliament and staff, because the staff work with you. And if you don’t build the capacity of the staff, the institution, they will not be in the position to serve you, to provide what you need to be able to satisfy the immeasurable, unlimited demands of the country, of your people, and of the world,” he added.

The workshop, which was organised by the Parliamentary Training Institute (PTI), started on Saturday, March 1, 2025, and it is expected to end on Monday, March 3, 2025.

The NPP MPs refused to attend the workshop citing concerns over the venue and associated expenses, arguing that Parliament House would have been an ideal venue.

A petition has been submitted to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to grant a presidential pardon to William Ato Essien, the founder of now-defunct Capital Bank

Essien is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence after being convicted by an Accra High Court for misappropriating over GH¢90 million in liquidity support provided by the Bank of Ghana to Capital Bank.

Initially, Essien was given the opportunity to avoid imprisonment by agreeing to repay the GH¢90 million as restitution to the state. However, after paying GH¢30 million upfront in December 2022, he failed to meet the payment terms for the remaining GH¢60 million, leading to the imposition of a custodial sentence.

The petition, sighted by GhanaWeb Business and submitted by lawyer Andrew Appiah-Danquah on Thursday, February 27, 2025, challenges the fairness of Essien’s conviction and imprisonment.

It highlights his contributions to Ghana’s financial sector, emphasizing that his leadership at Capital Bank created jobs, supported local businesses, and empowered entrepreneurs.

The petition argues that Essien’s conviction undermines the achievements of a visionary entrepreneur who proved that local enterprises could thrive in a competitive financial market.

It also claims that the collapse of Capital Bank in 2017 was not due to fraud but rather a politically motivated move to consolidate financial power.

According to the petition, Essien resisted political pressure to relinquish control of his bank, which allegedly led to its targeted closure

“Capital Bank’s collapse in 2017 was not due to fraud but a politically orchestrated move to consolidate financial power. Mr. Essien refused to bow to political pressure to cede control of his bank to powerful interests, which ultimately led to its targeted demise. The GH¢620 million Liquidity Support Was a Commercial Loan, Not a Fraud…Capital Bank was repaying this loan and had already paid GH¢336 million in interest over two years-clear evidence that it was a legitimate banking transaction,” the petition read.

It continued, “The GH¢480 million described as a “shareholder loan” was not stolen but rather a strategic restructuring of non-performing loans accumulated over 14 years. Such restructuring is a common financial practice aimed at strengthening a bank’s financial position and was not an act of fraud.

“Three other accused persons—Dr. Tetteh Nettey, Rev. Fitzgerald Odonkor,and Kate Quartey-Papafio—were acquitted on the same charges for which Mr. Essien was convicted. The court held that: The GH¢70 million transaction involving Kate Quartey-Papafio was fully accounted for. The GH¢130 million transaction involving Dr. Tetteh Nettey was fully accounted for. The GH¢27.5 million transaction involving Rev. Fitzgerald Odonkor was legal and authorised,” it added.

The West African regional bloc, Ecowas, says a mission deployed to Guinea-Bissau to help resolve an election dispute has left the country after the president threatened to expel it.

The team was sent in last month to help reach a “political consensus” on how to hold elections this year.

Guinea-Bissau’s general elections had been scheduled for last November but President Umaro Sissoco Embalo postponed them. He has since announced 30 November this year as the new date.

The opposition has opposed the delay and said Embalo’s term should have expired last week, although a Supreme Court ruling recently extended his term in office to September.

In a statement on Sunday, Ecowas said its team had met Embalo, other politicians and civil society groups to try to reach a consensus on when the elections should be held.

Ecowas said its team, together with the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel (Unowas), had been deployed to the country from 21-28 February.

It said it had “prepared a draft agreement on a roadmap for elections in 2025 and had started presenting it to the stakeholders for their consent”.

The team however “departed Bissau in the early morning of 1st March, following threats by [President] Umaro Sissoco Embalo to expel it”, it said.

The president has not responded to the bloc’s accusation.

The bloc says it will now present its report to the Ecowas president, including a proposal for an agreement leading to “inclusive and peaceful elections”.

Embalo was elected for a five-year term in December 2019, and the standoff over when it should end has heightened tensions in a country that has experienced several military coups since independence in 1974.

There have been two attempts to overthrow Embalo, the latest in December 2023.

This led him to dissolve the opposition-dominated parliament.

The opposition on Thursday called for a nationwide strike, on the day they said the president’s term was expiring, with the government deploying security forces across the capital.

A day earlier, Embalo visited Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Bank of Ghana (BOG) has issued a firm directive against photocopying Ghana Cards for banking transactions, emphasizing that biometric verification must be the standard for identity authentication.

This position was reinforced during a stakeholder engagement held at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, Accra, organized by Identity Management Systems II (IMS II) Ltd. in collaboration with the National Identification Authority (NIA).

The event, themed “Protect Every Transaction with Biometric Verification,” brought together the Bank of Ghana, the Ghana Association of Banks, the National Identification Authority, and representatives from the 25 universal banks in Ghana, to discuss the critical role of identity verification in securing financial transactions.

Executive Director of IMS II Ltd, James Cantamantu-Koomson, highlighted the fundamental shift in identity management, stating, “The way we do things is changing. Identity is at the centre and the engine of our financial system. The database that the National Identification Authority (NIA) has gathered is one of the most powerful assets we have as a country.”

His remarks underscored the need to transition from traditional manual processes to a multi-modal biometric verification approach that eliminates security vulnerabilities.

The Bank of Ghana made it clear that photocopying Ghana Cards for customer verification is not an acceptable practice.

Deputy Head of Office under the Financial Integrity Office of BOG, Ashitei Trebi-Ollennu, emphasized, “We have never said that banks should photocopy Ghana Cards. Photocopying leaves room for fraud and compromises the integrity of transactions.”

Instead, banks must authenticate identities directly through the biometric verification system linked to the National Identification database, ensuring a secure and reliable financial ecosystem.

The engagement fostered a productive dialogue between the Bank of Ghana, the Association of Banks, the National Identification Authority, and representatives of all universal banks.

Banks provided valuable feedback on how the exchange of information could be enhanced to streamline verification processes and improve efficiency.

The National Identification Authority also re-emphasized its legal mandate, with the Head, Legal Directorate Teresa Eson-Benjamin emphasizing the law that establishes the Ghana Card as the sole form of identification for banking transactions.

This clarification was crucial in ensuring that all financial institutions fully align with the legal framework governing identity verification in Ghana.

The discussions highlighted the importance of biometric verification as the most secure form of authentication, eliminating fraudulent activities associated with photocopied Ghana Cards. The event called for financial institutions to fully transition to biometric-based verification, ensuring that Ghana’s financial sector remains robust, fraud-proof, and aligned with international best practices.

The engagement was attended by key figures such as John Awuah, CEO of the Ghana Association of Banks (GAB), Audrey Mireku, Banking Operations, Risk & Cybersecurity, and Ms. Naa Welbeck, the Head of Supervision Unit under the Financial Integrity Office of the Bank of Ghana, as well as legal, technology and biometric experts from the NIA. Also present were executives from all the 25 universal banks in Ghana.

By the end of the engagement, there was a clear consensus: “Trust but verify” must be the guiding principle in Ghana’s financial sector. The commitment to biometric authentication will not only protect transactions but also reinforce Ghana’s position as a leader in secure digital identity verification.

The Chairman of the National Economic Dialogue Planning Committee, Dr Ishmael Yamson, has stated that Ghana remains economically dominated and heavily indebted, despite marking its 68th anniversary of political independence.

He noted that the country continues to struggle with widespread unemployment, particularly among the youth, which has become a significant security concern.

Additionally, he said that, Ghana is the most food-import-dependent country in Sub-Saharan Africa, relying heavily on foreign markets to feed its population.

Speaking at the 2025 National Economic Dialogue in Accra today, March 3, Dr Yamson highlighted the collapse of the manufacturing sector and the pervasive economic hardship affecting citizens.

“We know why we are where we are today,” he stated, attributing Ghana’s economic struggles to systemic failures.

Dr Yamson criticised the country’s political culture, describing it as one motivated by power and self-interest, with politicians looting state resources for personal gain.

He lamented the prevalence of selfishness, arrogance, and impunity among political leaders and public officials.

He further pointed out that Ghana’s governance system had been reduced to a “party-capture” model, where opposition parties deliberately obstruct national progress rather than supporting genuine development efforts.

“A party capture political system where the party in the opposition chooses to sit on the fence and does everything even including misleading the people to undermine genuine efforts to develop the country. There is no longer love for country,” he remarked.

Dr Yamson listed several structural issues affecting Ghana’s economy, including mismanagement, macroeconomic instability, institutionalised corruption, and weak state institutions.

He described the government as “maximum governance with minimum leadership,” citing inefficiencies in economic and social infrastructure, failed agricultural policies, and a continued overreliance on imported value-added products rather than developing local industries.

Despite decades of independence, he noted that Ghana remained primarily an exporter of raw commodities while depending on imports for processed goods—an economic structure that has hindered sustainable development.

The Ghana Police Service has made a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the tragic murder of Francis Yaw Frimpong, a devoted Asante Kotoko fan, also known as Nana Pooley.

According to an official statement from Asante Kotoko, the police have arrested Grace Siaw, the girlfriend of the prime suspect, Daniel Febiri, also known as Braima.

Grace Siaw is accused of concealing Braima between February 4 and February 17 and allegedly helping him escape to Senegal through Cote d’Ivoire. She was arraigned before the court on February 25 and subsequently remanded into custody.

Kotoko, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stated that she is scheduled to reappear before the court today, with authorities closely monitoring developments.

“The police have in their custody one GRACE SIAW, a girlfriend of DANIEL FEBIRI a.k.a BRAIMA a..k.a ASHI a.k.a Rasta who concealed the suspect between 4th & 17th Feb and assisted him to ran to Senegal through Cote D’voire. She was brought to court on 25th Feb and was remanded. She is to be brought to court today, and we are waiting.” Asante Kotoko wrote.

The arrest comes amid heightened calls for justice for Nana Pooley, whose tragic death has sparked widespread outrage in Ghanaian football.

The Eastern Regional House of Chiefs (ERHC) has granted an interim injunction restraining Baffour Akoto Osei from presenting himself as the Omanhene of Kwahu.

This development comes after Nana Kwaku Boateng, the Etena/Bretuo Abusuapanyin of Kubaase Abetifi, petitioned the ERHC, challenging the purported destoolment of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II by some kingmakers without due process.

According to the petition, Nana Kwaku Boateng stated that “the purported destoolment of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II by some kingmakers without due process is unlawful.”

He further argued that “the kingmakers did not follow the proper procedures for destooling a chief, and therefore, the purported destoolment is null and void.”

The ERHC’s Judicial Committee, in its ruling on January 19, 2025, prevented the kingmakers from interfering with Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II’s duties at his Abene Palace.

The Committee stated that “the interim injunction is granted to prevent the kingmakers from taking any further action that may interfere with the duties of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II as the Omanhene of Kwahu.”

In a related matter, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II secured a restraining order against Akyeamfour Asiedu Agyeman, the Abetifihene, who had styled himself as the acting president of the Kwahu Traditional Council.

The Abetifihene’s actions followed the purported destoolment of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II in October 2024.

According to the court documents, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II stated that “the Abetifihene’s actions are unlawful and constitute a threat to my position as the Omanhene of Kwahu.”

He further argued that “the Abetifihene does not have the authority to call himself the acting president of the Kwahu Traditional Council, and therefore, his actions are null and void.”

The High Court in Koforidua, in its ruling on February 28, 2025, granted an injunction to prevent the Abetifihene from holding himself out as the acting president or calling any meetings of the Council without Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II’s authorisation.

The court stated that “the injunction is granted to prevent the Abetifihene from taking any further action that may interfere with the duties of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II as the Omanhene of Kwahu.”

The ongoing legal battle highlights the tension within the Kwahu Traditional Council, with the court intervening to uphold Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II’s position and authority as the legitimate Kwahumanhene and president of the Council.

Ghana could find itself seeking an 18th bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) if urgent economic reforms are not undertaken, Dr K.Y. Amoako, President of the Africa Centre for Economic Transformation (ACET), has cautioned.

Speaking at the National Economic Dialogue (NED) 2025 on Monday, March 3, 2025, Dr Amoako expressed concern over the country’s prolonged reliance on external financial assistance, noting that Ghana has spent 40 of its 68 years since independence under IMF programmes.

“As we approach the conclusion of our 17th IMF bailout early next year, the fundamental question remains: Will this be the last, or are we simply paving the way for an 18th or 19th?” he asked.

Dr Amoako attributed Ghana’s economic challenges not only to global shocks but also to domestic policy failures, weak fiscal management, and corruption.

He warned that without a strong domestic revenue mobilisation strategy, the country would remain vulnerable to future financial crises.

He pointed out that the $1.7 billion Ghana is receiving from the IMF and World Bank this year is less than what the country spends on energy subsidies.

“It is a staggering comparison,” he said, adding that such structural imbalances undermine long-term economic stability.

Dr Amoako called for a clear financing strategy that aligns external funding with a national development plan while prioritising domestic revenue generation.

“We cannot continue to rely on foreign assistance to sustain our economy. Ghana must think and act differently,” he stated.

He proposed three key measures: establishing a Ghana Development Finance Platform to coordinate aid and investment flows, securing long-term financing commitments from major external partners, and strengthening domestic revenue mobilisation to curb financial leakages and illicit outflows.

“Ghana needs a financing strategy that is not only sustainable but also transparent and accountable,” he stressed.

“Without it, we risk repeating the cycle of economic distress and IMF dependence.”

Chairman of the National Economic Dialogue Planning Committee, Dr. Ishmael Yamson has expressed confidence in the governance of President Mahama to restore sustainable economic growth for Ghana.

Speaking at the launch of the National Economic Dialogue on Monday, March 3, 2025, Dr. Yamson noted that Ghana has long suffered serious economic mess, emphasising the need for an urgent strategic plan to revive Ghana’s economy.

He believes President Mahama has the wherewithal to reset Ghana’s economy as he says he’s been blessed with wisdom to put Ghana on the right path and reset the country’s destiny.

“Your Excellency, someone must reset the destiny of Ghana and it can only be you.

“Everywhere in the world that economic transformation has taken place, only one individual has led the charge and the Lord has blessed you with the wisdom to take on that task, the task to liberate Ghana from economic mismanagement and corruption to reset Ghana and put it on a path of sustainable and resilient growth including development and prosperity for all citizens of the country,” he noted.

Dr. Ishmael Yamson further painted a dark picture of Ghana’s political arena which he said has been captured by “a political mindset motivated by power to loot state coffers for personal gains, selfishness, arrogance and impunity by our political leaders and public officers.”

“A party capture political system where the party in opposition chooses to sit on the fence and does everything even including mislead the people to undermine judging effort to develop the country,” he added.

“There’s no longer love for the country, economic mismanagement, macro instability and macro-economic impediment to economic transformation,” he asserted.

The Economist noted that the harsh economic conditions and the failure of Ghanaian leaders to address the ‘sinking economy’ has caused Ghanaian youths to lose hope in the country and would want to migrate with the slightest chance.

“Additionally, Your Excellency we have succeeded in creating a new generation called generation hustlers who have lost hope and just want to leave their country and leave Ghana behind them and relocate to foreign land. A very sad spectacle of our once highly revered country.

“Your Excellency this is definitely not the Ghana that our forefathers once fought for and definitely not the Ghana that succeeding generations have toiled and hoped for,” he lamented.

Entertainment pundit, Vida Adumtwumwaa, has raised some questions about media personality Hammer Nti in response to his claims of taking care of Okomfour Kwadee more than his own family.

In a discussion on United Showbiz on March 1, 2025, Vida Adumtwumwaa criticised Hammer Nti, labelling him disrespectful and accusing him of speaking as though the musician is a ‘commodity’.

She then questioned why Hammer Nti treats Kwadee as though he is an object of worship or a fetish.

Vida made these statements while expressing her confusion over why the popular radio presenter is so determined to “adopt” Kwadee and create the impression that he cares for him more than anyone else.

“Hammer Nti is a disrespectful person who doesn’t know how to talk. If you listened to him, he sounded like Okumfour Kwadee is a commodity he has control over every time. If you go to Kumasi, you will hear people talking about how he sometimes gives Kwadee a car and money so he can feel like a superstar again.

“Among all the businesses in the world, is Kwadee the only person he can invest in? Is adult adoption by force? If Kwadee is his fetish, he should let us know. Maybe if Kwadee is in his house, he worships him because I can’t fathom what he is doing,” she said.

Vida Adumtwumwaa further criticised Okomfour Kwadee’s family for allowing Hammer Nti to take responsibility for the musician.

She urged them to press charges against Hammer Nti if he attempts to “adopt” Kwadee again without their knowledge.

“I will blame the family of Okumfour Kwadee. They should have arrested him a long time ago when they didn’t find Kwadee… He should allow Kwadee to return to his family; this is not something we even have to waste time on. So, I would urge his mother that the next time he comes for Kwadee, they should press charges so he is arrested because Kwadee is not a commodity,” she added.

In his third and final volume of recollections of his life and primarily everything that had to do with his now defunct bank, UT Bank, Capt Prince Kofi Amoabeng (rtd), shares details of the day his bank was ‘rudely’ locked out of business, very early on the first working day of a week in 2017.

Titled, ‘The UT Bank Story Vol. 3: Fateful Decisions,’ authored alongside George Bentum Essiaw, the celebrated banker described how, as early as 6AM on Monday, August 14, 2017, he received the most uncomfortable news about his bank, although initially, as he wrote, he didn’t imagine it was about his business.

This was because when he returned to his room upstairs in his residence at Kukurantumi, where he had a habit for leaving behind his phone while on his religious morning habits, he was met by 63 missed phone calls.

“While observing this early morning ritual, I always left my cell phone behind in the upstairs bedroom. It was only after I returned to the bedroom that I attended to my cell phone. And because I’m a creature of habit, I observed this routine with religious dedication.

“… It was only in the morning, after I had had my hot cocoa and caught up with the news downstairs, returned to the bedroom, and was comfortably ensconced in the water closet, that I checked for the first time whatever messages or phone calls I may have missed during the night while I slept, or early in the morning while I was observing my rituals,” he wrote.

He continued to narrate how he saw the missed calls: “When I checked my messages and missed calls that morning, I realised I had missed 63 calls and several messages! Goodness me! What on earth could’ve happened to warrant 63 missed calls? I don’t quite remember, but my heart might’ve skipped a beat!

“I didn’t know what to make of the numerous missed calls. What the heck was going on? In my desperation to find an answer, I imagined the worst: surely something awful must’ve happened to one of my children! That was the worst thing I could think of. Oh my God, don’t let it be any pf my children, please, I prayed silently.”

Capt Kofi Amoabeng said he had another thought in mind regarding his bank but that “didn’t jump to the forefront of my mind.”

What then, had happened?

In his own words, which are captured in the opening lines of the prologue of the book, he wrote:

“14th August, 2017, 5:46 am, Manet Towers, Airport City…

“A group of officials from the Bank of Ghana (BoG), flanked by well-armed police personnel, under the eager lenses and microphones of media personnel from several media houses, have gathered expectantly at the head offices of UT Bank. No matter how one looks at it, this gathering is unusual.

“The questions were aplenty.

“Why would BoG officials, under heavy police protection, gather at a bank’s premises? Why so early in the morning? What urgent business were they there to conduct which could not wait a couple of hours until the bank opened its doors for business? Why the heavy police presence? Who invited the media? What were they doing at the premises of a bank, an indigenous-owned, publicly listed bank, for that matter?

“The answer would soon unfold…

“At about 6 am, the unusual gathering of the three distinct groups of people mentioned above thronged the front doors of the plush UT Bank head office. With sheer alacrity, the BoG officials, under the protection of the armed police personnel, locked out the bank staff with the padlocks they had brought along with them. After firmly securing the doors, they pulled down the UT Bank signage with wanton abandon as though it was an occultic item and replaced it with GCB Bank signage.

“To the casual observer, the whole scene could easily have passed for an ill-thought-out, amateur action film sequence executed by an enthusiastic, inexperienced film director. And to think all these were done right under the lenses and microphones of the media on that early morning when the bank was not expected to commence business until much later suggested that, indeed, it was all well-orchestrated by the powers that be without so much as a clue, whatsoever, by the owners of the bank.”

Capt Prince Kofi Amoabeng later described what led to this rather unexpected turn of events for his business, referring it to “an issue with the bank, which was encountering some liquidity challenges that we had been diligently trying to resolve.”

Six Black Stars players have been ruled out of Ghana’s upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The sextet will miss the forthcoming games in March 2025 due to their respective injuries.

The Black Stars will return to action for the first time since November 2024 when they lost 2-1 to Niger in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Head coach Otto Addo will look to right the wrongs from the awful showing in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers as they face Chad and Madagascar in the World Cup qualifiers.

Ghana will host Chard in Accra on March 17 before travelling to Morocco to play Madagascar on March 24.

Below are the six players and why they will be missing the World Cup qualifiers

Abdul Mumin

Mumin picked up an injury during Rayo Vallecano’s 1-1 draw with Sevilla on March 1.

The defender played 39 minutes before he was forced off in the game. The extent of the injury is currently unknown.

Abdul Fatawu

Fatawu Issahaku is currently in the recovery stage after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)

Alidu Seidu

Alidu Seidu is nursing an ACL injury he suffered in 2024. He has been ruled out of the season and is expected to be back in action during the summer.

Daniel Kofi Kyereh

Daniel Kofi Kyereh has not made any competitive appearance since 2024, when he suffered a knee injury in July.

Joseph Aidoo

Joseph Aiddo sustained a fresh injury in Valladolid’s loss against Athletic Club and is expected to be out for a month.

Joseph Paintsil

Paintsil is currently nursing a quad injury he sustained in February. He has been ruled out for 6-8 weeks.

Mother of musician Okomfour Kwadee, Madam Cecilia Atootaga, has strongly refuted claims suggesting that she is responsible for her son’s mental health struggles.

Speaking on UTV’s United on Saturday night, she indicated that the rumours were fueled by one Hammer Nti, who had been taking care of Kwadee.

According to her, she had always preferred her son to be under the care of fellow musician, Lord Kenya, who had endured a similar mental health crisis but was able to recover successfully.

The mother explained that Lord Kenya assured her that her son would be okay with the right help. However, when she proposed Lord Kenya as a potential caregiver, Hammer Nti reportedly reacted negatively, prompting her to step back and allow him to continue managing her son’s care.

“I told Hammer that I wanted Lord Kenya to handle my son, but he got angry, so I rescinded my decision and allowed him to take charge,” she explained.

Madam Atootaga emphasized that she had never been opposed to people helping her son. Her priority, she said, was always Kwadee’s well-being and recovery.

“I could never do that, and this false narrative should not be allowed to persist. If we had entrusted him to Lord Kenya and my son had regained his sanity and become like him, it would have been a great thing. But because of his interests, Hammer did not want that. They always say that his mother is behind his problems, but that is not true. I would never do that to my son,” she said emphatically.
