The 7 Best Denim Shirts Are Rugged Yet Refined

0

Whether you’re going for cowboy-core or for corporate-core, a denim shirt is the ultimate in-betweener in your wardrobe. You can wear denim shirts with jeans and boots for a Western-inspired, Canadian tuxedo look, or with pleated plants and a blazer for an elevated take on a comfortable classic. You can wear denim shirts unbuttoned, with a classic white tee underneath, or buttoned all the way up, bolo tie fastened around your neck. It’s no wonder the shirts have been a staple in classic Americana attire for so long; they’re pretty damn infallible.

Our favorite denim shirts are all about adding some seamless style and comfort into your wardrobe. Some are Western-inspired, with pointed yokes, snap plackets, and tough fabrics; some are ready for a pair of chinos or khakis, with slim silhouettes that pair well with your go-to blazers. Whatever your preference is, you’ve come to the right place. We tried and tested a bunch of denim shirts, and narrowed it down to our 7 favorites (and photographed them on Esquire’s editor-in-chief, Michael Sebastian), ranging from Wrangler’s iconic Westernwear style to J.Crew’s versatile button-down. Our editors have put these shirts to work and worn them to work, and as every good denim shirt should be, they’re up to the task.

Ken Kinney addressing journalists

President of West African Action Network on Small Arms (WAANSA)-Ghana, Ken Kinney, has expressed concern over Ghana’s approach to addressing the proliferation of illicit small arms, light weapons, and ammunition within the ECOWAS sub-region.

During a recent workshop, Ken Kinney highlighted that ongoing violent conflicts in various parts of Ghana and the broader West African region are exacerbated by easy access to small arms and inadequate arms governance.

He emphasised that this escalating tension prompted the initiation of the Saving-Lives Entity (SALIENT) Project in 2023, a collaborative effort among UN agencies focused on disarmament and development, including the United Nations Office of Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), aimed at supporting Ghana in improving arms governance.

Mr. Kinney noted that a series of online consultations involving relevant UN agencies had taken place, during which WAANSA-Ghana was invited to participate and subsequently selected to lead the project’s implementation.

He mentioned a scoping mission led by Mr. Anselme Yabouri, Director of the United Nations Regional Center for Peace and Disarmament in Africa, who met with civil society organisations (CSOs) on November 30, 2023.

“Since then, the UNDP Ghana office and the National Small Arms Commission have worked diligently to commence the project’s implementation. For CSOs, capacity building activities kicked off in August 2024,” he stated.

In Ghana, the project is being executed under the leadership of the UN Resident Coordinator, with collaboration from UN agencies (UNDP and UNODC), the National Commission for Small Arms, the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), and WAANSA-Ghana to integrate small arms control into development frameworks.

“WAANSA-Ghana has been entrusted with a pivotal role under the SALIENT Fund Project to advocate for urgent legal reforms regarding small arms legislation in Ghana. This initiative aims to ensure a thorough understanding of proposed national legislation, policies, and regulatory reviews that align with existing international, regional, and sub-regional instruments among various stakeholders in Ghana,” he added.

Speaking on the significance of media engagement, Mr. Kinney emphasised that educating media practitioners is crucial for advocating the swift passage of the Arms Commission Bill into law.

“This engagement will enhance your understanding of international arms governance frameworks, including the ECOWAS Convention and the Arms Trade Treaty, as well as the Arms Commission Bill itself,” he added.

Bagbin probes MP over galamsey allegations

0

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has announced the launch of an investigation into a petition against a Member of Parliament (MP) over alleged involvement in illegal mining, known as “galamsey.”

Speaking at a conference on Wednesday, February 26, where MPs and stakeholders finalized a strategy for responsible small-scale mining, Bagbin warned that Parliament would not shield any lawmaker found complicit in destructive mining activities.

“Let me be unequivocal in stating that Parliament will not tolerate any MP, regardless of position, who is found to be complicit in destructive mining activities,” he stated.

Revealing the ongoing probe, he added, “There’s a petition before me concerning an MP, and I have initiated an investigation. The member himself has appeared before me on that. We are not going to countenance it at all.”

Bagbin also underscored the need for lawmakers to uphold accountability and integrity, stating, “As lawmakers, we must lead by example. Any MP caught engaging in or facilitating this type of existential threat to our lives will face the full rigours of the law—and I mean what I say.

“We cannot preach accountability and integrity to the nation while turning a blind eye to misconduct within our ranks.”

We’ll flush out illegal miners from our water bodies

0

Deputy Minister-designate for Lands and Natural Resources, Sulemana Yusif, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to curbing illegal mining, which continues to threaten the nation’s water bodies.

Addressing the impact of ‘galamsey’ on Ghana’s rivers and lakes, Yusif stressed that tackling the issue requires a collective national effort.

His remarks highlight the alarming levels of turbidity in major water bodies, with readings between 5,000 and 12,000 Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU)—far exceeding the acceptable limit of 500 NTU.

During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on February 26, Yusif stated, “Nobody should sit in, let’s say, Pusiga or Kpandai and say that is not my business. You never know when a fish that is harvested from, let’s say, the Central Region will be sold to you in Paga or any part of the country.

“And so, it’s a national issue, and I think that I will help my minister [Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah], like he has started doing, to flush out all those who are on our water bodies.”

The Mahama administration has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining, ordering the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved.

Brunel University of London and University of Ghana collaborate to enhance older adults’ well-being

0

Brunel University of London, in partnership with the University of Ghana, successfully hosted a three-day workshop in Accra aimed at improving the well-being of older adults.

The workshop focused on establishing an Older Adults Reference Group in Ghana through a Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) initiative.

This initiative seeks to amplify the voices of older adults, ensuring that their perspectives shape healthcare policies, research, and well-being programmes.

The reference group is expected to play a crucial role in guiding research from conceptualisation to implementation, ensuring that interventions are tailored to the needs of Ghana’s ageing population.

Academics from Brunel University of London shared insights on the structure and impact of the Brunel Older Adults Reference Group (BORG), a model that has significantly influenced health and well-being research in the UK. Sessions covered topics such as health literacy on sarcopenia, diet and exercise considerations, and pain research, with the aim of adapting these approaches to the Ghanaian context.

BORG has been instrumental in shaping Brunel University’s health and well-being research by incorporating the real-life experiences and needs of older adults. Inspired by its success, the workshop aimed to replicate this model in Ghana, ensuring that older adults’ voices inform research, educational programmes, and healthcare initiatives.

The delegation from Brunel University was led by Dr Paapa Kwesi Ampiah, a lecturer at the institution, while Professor Jonathan Quartey, an Associate Professor of Physiotherapy and Chair of the Health Education Unit at the College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana, spearheaded the initiative in Ghana.

Speaking at the event, Dr Ampiah highlighted the significance of the initiative:

Our goal is to establish an Older Adults Reference Group to ensure that older adults play a key role in shaping research, healthcare, and well-being initiatives designed for them in Ghana.”

Professor Christina Victor, a leading figure behind BORG, explained the motivation behind the collaboration:

The University of Ghana was the ideal partner for this initiative. The response has been fantastic, and we are hopeful that the workshop will yield meaningful results.”

Dr Salamatu Attah Nantogma, a representative of the Ghana Health Service, praised the collaboration, expressing optimism about its impact:

As a health practitioner, I am excited to see this partnership between Brunel University and the University of Ghana. I strongly believe this initiative will have lasting benefits for current and future generations of older adults.”

Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences and founding head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Ghana, emphasised the role of technology in enhancing older adults’ lives:

“I believe this workshop will empower older adults by introducing them to assistive technologies that will significantly improve their daily lives.”

Rev. Joseph Amoako, a representative of the Older Adults Group in Ghana, commended Brunel University for its commitment to supporting older adults through research and policy development.

Dr Peter Ndaa, from the Centre for Disability Studies and Advocacy at the University of Ghana, expressed enthusiasm about the workshop’s potential impact, particularly for older adults living with disabilities.

Professor Quartey also highlighted the broader significance of the initiative:

The outcomes of this workshop will not only benefit older adults but also serve as a vital resource for academicians and researchers.”

Held from Monday, 24th February to Wednesday, 26th February, the workshop engaged stakeholders in focused group discussions to ensure its effectiveness and long-term impact. Participants expressed hope that the initiative would bridge existing gaps in healthcare research and policy development for older adults in Ghana.

As the initiative takes shape, stakeholders remain optimistic that this collaboration will lead to a more inclusive healthcare system, where older adults are not just recipients of policies but active contributors to their own well-being.

2024 Election was the best in the history of the Fourth Republic

0

Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has described the 2024 Election as the most successful in the history of Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, she indicated that the commission’s objective at the moment is not to conduct a full review but to acknowledge the various assessments being undertaken.

“Observers both local and international have indicated that the elections of 2024 have been the best in the history of the Fourth Republic. As I noted earlier, our purpose here is not to undertake an in-depth examination or review of the elections. We are well aware that the political parties are doing their own undertaking their own reviews, and so are we,” she stated.

She explained that the EC has already commenced an internal evaluation of the electoral process, beginning from the district and regional levels.

“As we speak, we started a bottom-up approach where we’ve started from our field offices, our district offices, all the way to the regional level. And we intend to also meet with our regional leaders and heads in the coming days to undertake a thorough and in-depth examination, an assessment of the 2024 Election. We are also mindful that a lot of you are doing the same,” she noted.

Jean Mensa added that in the coming weeks, the commission will organise a broader discussion on the electoral process to review all aspects and determine areas for improvement.

“At the right time, in the coming weeks, the commission will hold a meeting with a view to having a discussion on the elections right from A to Z, from registration to declaration, to look at the lessons learnt, what worked well, what didn’t work so well and what we can do to improve upon elections and to chart the way forward,” she added.

Help Afia Schwarzenegger with Some of Your Billions Because She’s Suffering in America – Frafrahemaa Begs Tracey Boakye

0

U.S. based Ghanaian Tiktoker, Gloria Enyonam aka Frafrahemaa, is pleading with Ghana’s latest billionaire, Tracey Boakye, to have mercy on Afia Schwarzenegger and help her.

Frafrahemaa, in a recent viral video, said Tracey should use some of her newfound billions to help her former bestie, Afia Schwar, because the loudmouthed comedienne is ‘suffering’ in America just like herself.

Her video comes after the recent unveiling of a new property by Tracey Boakye.

The property, an Air BnB style rental, is named Casa Grande. Tracey’s grand unveiling was graced by numerous top celebs and social media users were stunned that she had so much wealth. Twene Jonas already expressed scepticism over Tracey’s source of wealth, claiming she definitely made her money in other ways apart from acting.

Frafrahemaa made similar comments but she added that Tracey should help out her fellow mafia gang member, Afia, who is now a Lyft driver in the United States struggling to make ends meet.

Afenyo-Markin used unparliamentary words on Ahiafor – Majority

0

The Majority in Parliament has accused Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin of using derogatory language toward the Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor.

This accusation stems from a disagreement during the vetting of Deputy Attorney General and Justice Minister-designate, Justice Srem-Sai.

The contention arose when Afenyo-Markin requested Srem-Sai to demonstrate a traditional dance, a move Ahiafor opposed.

Offended by the Chairman’s stance, Afenyo-Markin described it as ‘whimsical’ and claimed he was ‘rudely interrupted,’ suggesting unfair treatment toward the Minority.

Following a ten-minute suspension of the vetting process, the Minority returned and declared their rejection of Srem-Sai’s nomination.

Addressing a press conference, Member of Parliament for Daboya/Mankarigu, Shaibu Mahama, accused the Minority Leader of using ‘unparliamentary comments’ against the Chairman.

Mahama emphasized that such language undermines the decorum and respect expected in parliamentary proceedings.

“Directly, we have no position, indirectly though, the action the chairman took was our position. The minority leader wanted a nominee to dance to a tune. I think that we shouldn’t reduce the vetting committee to a dancing floor.

“We spoke about languages on February 25, and a day before [February 24]. Those are quite different. This is a vetting committee, the entire world is watching. A presidential nominee you say he should dance that didn’t sit well.

“And so, the chairman overruled it. Then he decided to use very unparliamentary words on the chairman. He vehemently refused to withdraw.”

However, the majority has recommended the approval of the nominees.

Minority Rejects Deputy AG Nominee

0

Alexander Afenyo-Markin

The Minority in Parliament has rejected the nomination of Justice Srem Sai as Deputy Attorney General, following what they described as unfair treatment during the vetting process.

The Minority Leader and Ranking Member of the Appointments Committee, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, expressed his dissatisfaction with the proceedings, particularly with the conduct of the Committee Chairperson, Bernard Ahiafor.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin protested yesterday the abrupt ending of the nominee’s vetting session, accusing the Chairperson of acting in a “whimsical and capricious” manner.

He emphasised that his dissatisfaction with the ruling was not addressed fairly, and said that Mr. Ahiafor’s actions were “rude and disruptive.”

“We are protesting your conduct in abruptly ending the nominee’s vetting on the grounds that I refused to withdraw my dissatisfaction with your ruling,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin said.

“I described your actions as whimsical and capricious, and I also noted that you rudely made those expressions. We do not think that, in the spirit of cooperation, you should put up such a posture,” he stated.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin also pointed out what he saw as a pattern of unfair treatment throughout the proceedings.

He noted that earlier in the day, the Weija-Gbawe MP, Ahmed Jerry Shaib, had faced a similar unjust interruption.

The Minority Leader highlighted how, during his own questioning, he was repeatedly disrupted, including by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, and the Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor.

“The Attorney General himself interrupted, yet you curiously claimed you never heard him. Then the Majority Chief Whip also disrupted the session, though not into the microphone. This was clearly aimed at obstructing the smooth vetting process.

Eventually, you allowed him to ask a so-called follow-up question,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin added.

In response to what they perceived as a violation of procedural fairness, the Minority Caucus officially announced their rejection of Justice Srem Sai’s nomination as Deputy Attorney General.

They stated that any approval of the nominee would be a decision solely for the Majority.

The Minority Leader, who represents the Effutu Constituency, further criticised the handling of the vetting process, mentioning the interference of the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

He expressed frustration with the interruption during the vetting of Justice Srem Sai, asserting that it had been unfairly cut short.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin indicated that if the Chairperson’s conduct did not change by Friday, the Minority would decide on their next course of action.

He concluded, “On Friday, God willing, we will be available, and if the posture remains the same, we will advise ourselves on the next line of action.”

Minority rejects Srem-Sai, Suhuyini nominations, boycotts vetting

0

The Minority in Parliament has rejected the nomination of Deputy Attorney General and Justice Minister-designate, Justice Srem-Sai, following a disagreement with the Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor.

The dispute arose when Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin requested Srem-Sai to demonstrate the traditional dance a move the Chairman vehemently opposed.

Taking offense, Afenyo-Markin described the Chairman’s stance as ‘whimsical’ and claimed he was ‘rudely interrupted,’ indicating unfair treatment toward the Minority.

After a ten-minute suspension of the vetting process, the Minority returned and declared their rejection of Srem-Sai’s nomination.

Afenyo-Markin noted that, despite smooth vetting sessions since Monday, February 24, 2025, they have also rejected the nominations of Alhassan Suhuyini, Deputy Minister-designate for Roads and Highways who had been vetted already, Sulemana Yussif, Deputy Minister-designate for Lands and Natural Resources, and Yussif Issaka Jajah, Deputy Minister-designate for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts.

The Effutu MP stated, “When it got to me the leader of the caucus, there were all manner of interruptions. Including an interruption by the Attorney General [Dr Dominic Ayine] himself, of which you curiously said you never heard.

“Again, the Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, came in interrupting, though not into the mic. It was aimed at obstructing the smooth process of my vetting of the nominee [Srem-Sai]. Eventually, you allowed him to ask a so-called follow-up question.

“The minority caucus rejects the nomination of the Deputy Attorney General and that the decision of it will be solely yours as majority caucus. For today [February 26], all other nominees in furtherance of our protest, we’re also rejecting them and your decision will remain yours as majority caucus.”

Upper Manya Krobo NDC distance itself from calls to force Mahama to nominate Minister, DCE

0

The constituency executive committee of the National Democratic Congress in the Upper Manya Krobo District led by Chairman Alhaji Moro Yakubu has distanced itself from a press conference seeking to force President Mahama to nominate the MP for the area as a Minister.

The executives also condemned the party activists who are falsely parading themselves as branch youth executives of the party for a organising press conference at the constituency office in support of Emmanuel Kwesi Lawer as their preferred choice for the position of District Chief Executive without prior approval from the party hierarchy.

Speaking to the media, the constituency executives opined that even though they would welcome and endorse the president’s appointment of Bismark Tetteh Nyarko as a minister, they are against attempts to cajole the president into taking such a decision.

The constituency organiser, James Djornorbua stated that the constituency executive committee with the endorsement of the constituency chairman Moro Yakubu trusts in the ability of the appointing authority to resort to due process in making all appointments. This, he said will make every member of the party accept whoever is appointed for any role.

” In fact, we’ll be more than happy to see President Mahama appoint our MP as a minister, he’s worked tirelessly over the years as an MP and a staunch member of the party and ought to be recognised but to make such requests and align it with the appointment of Emmanuel Kwesi Lawer as DCE is out of place,” he stated.

The constituency Deputy Secretary, Enoch Komesuor wondered why the group aligned to the DCE aspirant would go against laid down procedures in pursuit of their ambitions. He further called on Mr. Emmanuel Kwesi Lawer to call on his supporters to refrain from actions that will disturb the unity of the party in the constituency.

“The appointment of someone to the position of a DCE is the sole prerogative of the president. The party had put into motion processes to assess the capabilities of the persons seeking to hold or man these offices so let’s not be seen to be doing what will eventually cause division in the party after the announcement of any of the aspirants,” he said.

An executive member, Seidu Abubakari Salifu, told the media “It is normal for people to struggle for political positions but we shouldn’t conduct ourselves in a manner that will be detrimental to the party”.

The youth group aligned to Emmanuel Kwesi Lawer, an aspirant for the DCE position in the Upper Manya Krobo District in the Eastern Region issued a passionate appeal to President John Mahama and the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to fulfill electoral promises made during the 2024 campaign by considering the nomination of the Member of Parliament Bismark Tetteh Nyarko as a Deputy Minister.

At a press conference held at Asesewa on Saturday 22nd February, 2025, the group alleged that during the 2024 election campaigns, the NDC’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, and President John Dramani Mahama assured the people of Upper Manya Krobo that their Member of Parliament would be considered for a ministerial position.

On the appointment of the District Chief Executive (DCE), the group at the same press conference threw their weight behind Emmanuel Kwesi Lawer as their preferred candidate for the DCE position. They went further to point out that, they will accept no other person appointed to the DCE position other than their preferred candidate.

Three persons including Evans Srenyame, a Human Resource Officer with the Ghana Education Service and a former constituency youth organizer and current, member of the party’s eastern regional youth working committee, Ibrahim Mohammed, the party’s Zongo caucus coordinator and Emmanuel Kwesi Lawer, the communications officer of the party in the constituency are being considered for appointment of the DCE for the area.

Mahama withdraws ENI-Springfield unitisation directive

0

The Government of Ghana has officially withdrawn the unitisation directives issued in 2020 that mandated the joint operation of oil fields by Eni Ghana Exploration and Production Limited (Eni) and Springfield Exploration and Production Limited (Springfield).

This decision, announced on February 25, 2025, by the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, follows a directive from President John Dramani Mahama.

The original directives, implemented by the previous administration in April, October, and November 2020, required the compulsory unitisation of Eni’s Sankofa field and Springfield’s Afina discovery.

This move aimed to optimise resource extraction but faced significant opposition and led to protracted legal disputes.

In July 2024, the International Arbitration Tribunal dismissed a $915 million claim by Eni and Vitol against Ghana, which challenged the unitisation directive. The Tribunal found that while the concept of unitisation is legally valid, the specific circumstances and implementation of the directives violated the Petroleum Agreement.

Jinapor’s recent announcement reflects the government’s commitment to restoring investor confidence and revitalising Ghana’s petroleum sector. The Ministry of Energy has indicated that this withdrawal does not preclude the possibility of issuing new directives in the future, should they be necessary for the equitable and efficient development of the country’s petroleum resources.

We must act urgently to check galamsey

0

Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has urged Members of Parliament, particularly those from mining regions, to take decisive action in supporting the government’s renewed efforts to combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Speaking at the Parliamentarians Conference on Restoring the Culture of Small-Scale Mining in Ghana, Professor Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that MPs have a crucial role in addressing the ongoing environmental destruction caused by unlawful mining activities.

Ebenezer De-Gaulle: Resetting Ghana through Digital Cheetah Generation

0

The concept of the “Cheetah Generation,” introduced by renowned economist, Prof. George Ayittey, refers to young, dynamic, resilient, and innovative Africans [willing and] driving change and progress on the continent. This concept has significant implications for developing countries seeking economic growth. This group is powerful without guns. They are not necessarily Gen Zs, but a close picture of the influence of this generation is the Gen Z protests experienced across Africa in 2024.

In Ghana, the Cheetah Generation recently played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s political landscape. The hung parliament of 2020 and the 2024 election outcome were definite signs of a youth willing to take risks and change existing political narratives.

The youth vote was instrumental in President John Mahama’s comeback, with many young Ghanaians rallying behind his message of ‘resetting” the country.

But their influence extends beyond politics.

They are also driving innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth in various sectors and as Prof. Ayittey’s concept suggests, this cohort is willing to challenge the status quo and create positive change. Given the Cheetah Generation’s potential, it is important for leaders like President Mahama to take their ideas and aspirations more seriously than others in the sub region.

The biggest conversation after January 7th 2025 has been the weight of the “quick fix” expectations of Mahama’s second coming.

His promise of creating a 24-hour economy in Ghana, where businesses and activities operate around the clock, has been met with both enthusiasm and criticism from young people. This vision aims to create jobs in both the public and private sectors, particularly at night.

But what role does the “Cheetah Generation” play in making this vision a reality?

The Cheetah Generation are digital natives, entrepreneurial, educated, and connected with a strong desire to create positive change. Although they appreciate the role of colonialism in their history, they have moved on from it.  These unique attributes make them ideal candidates to drive and thrive in a 24-hour economy if conditions and policies are deliberately targeted at their growth. As digital natives, they are technologically skilled to innovate and disrupt traditional industries, and entrepreneurial, willing to take risks to create new opportunities.

Their education and global connectivity enables them to access knowledge, networks, and global markets. To effectively utilize this group in implementing a 24-hour economy, President Mahama’s administration must adopt a comprehensive strategy that addresses the needs of young Ghanaian entrepreneurs: digital infrastructure, skills development, policy, and international partnership.

Skills development and education are essential for supporting the growth of a 24-hour economy. Government can enhance vocational and technical training programs that equip young people with skills in areas such as logistics, crypto trading, bookkeeping, supply chain management, and customer service, supporting the operation and growth of businesses that operate at night.

Through deliberate inter agency partnerships between universities, CSOs and industries, digital skills training programs can also be offered to enable young people to develop skills in areas such as e-commerce, programming, digital marketing, and data analysis and students enrolled immediately into tasks or jobs. The partnership between the Accra Technical University, AFOS Foundation and the Institute of ICT Professionals Ghana (IIPGH) that organized a Tech Entrepreneurs Forum in 2023 to minimize the digitalization deficit and advance small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana is a notable attempt.

A favorable policy and regulatory framework is also critical for supporting the growth of a 24-hour economy. The government under John Mahama would have to reexamine the current business regulatory framework to cut down the complex institutional duplications in registering and operating businesses to make it more seamless and friendly for young people.

Research by the Institute of Liberty and Policy Innovation-ILAPI, reveals that businesses under the SME category would need at least nine (9) business regulatory certificates or permits to run an operation in Accra, Ghana. If entrepreneur-cheetahs will participate and thrive under the 24-hour economy, government regulations should be minimal, streamlined to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and facilitate the growth of businesses, especially those operating at night.

To drive Ghana’s digitalization, President Mahama proposed a comprehensive plan that will focus on expanding digital infrastructure to foster innovation, improve public services through digital technologies, to promote a digital economy, train 1 million youth in digital skills, and establish a Fintech Fund.

However, to ensure the success of these initiatives, quality and reliable high-speed internet is crucial. Ghana’s urban areas, such as Accra/Tema, Kumasi, and Takoradi, are ideal for implementing a digital economy, but they often experience inconsistent internet connectivity. Data is life and the lifeblood of the digital economy, and without access to high-speed internet, businesses and individuals cannot participate fully in the digital economy.

Investing in digital infrastructure becomes vital for supporting the growth of businesses that operate around the clock. This includes developing robust and reliable digital infrastructure, such as high-speed internet, data centers, affordable cost of internet data, and cybersecurity systems. Ultimately, the plan to drive Ghana’s digitalization is ambitious and comprehensive and by investing in a good digital infrastructure and promoting a digital economy, Ghana can position itself for economic growth and prosperity.

In addition to digital infrastructure, upgrading transportation infrastructure is essential for facilitating the movement of goods, services, and people at night. This includes investing in roads, highways, and public transportation systems that support the growth of businesses operating around the clock. For example, drivers, mostly young people of the ride hailing apps, Uber and Bolt, avoid some locations in the capital because of poor [sometimes life-threatening] road networks and visibility at night. This situation has not encouraged users of the app, especially businesses, to maximize its features. I believe this is the easiest and most practical task any government aspiring a 24-hour economy should accomplish.

A sustainable 24-hour economy in Ghana also hinges on addressing pressing security concerns. To achieve this, technology can be utilized to enhance security through surveillance cameras, alarm systems, and mobile apps, deterring crime and providing real-time monitoring. This technology can also facilitate collaboration between stakeholders to share information and respond to security threats.

However, technological solutions alone are insufficient. The Interior Ministry must also prioritize increasing the police-to-population ratio, currently at 1:1000, to ensure adequate security coverage. Additionally, emergency services such as ambulances and fire services must be equipped and prepared to operate effectively in a 24-hour economy. By implementing a multi-faceted security strategy addresses the unique needs of entrepreneurs, or “cheetahs,” who operate at night, as well as those in the security services.

The tourism industry is a significant contributor to Ghana’s economy, accounting for approximately 4.8% of the country’s GDP (World Bank, 2020). However, the sector faces several challenges, including limited infrastructure, inadequate marketing, and a lack of innovative products and services (Ghana Tourism Authority, 2020). Recent global trends in tourism indicate a shift towards experiential travel, with travelers seeking immersive and authentic experiences (Mastercard Economics Institute, 2024). This resurgence in tourism is not limited to just a revival of pre-pandemic numbers; travelers are also prioritizing leisure for longer periods. COVID-19 pandemic has ironically encouraged people to travel more with people are placing greater value on experiences over material things. Travel has become a top priority for many, with post-pandemic trends showing a desire to explore new destinations and immerse oneself in different cultures.

This trend presents an opportunity for Ghana to develop innovative tourism products and services that showcase its unique cultural and natural heritage. One approach is the creation of Tourism Innovation hubs or a digital center for the sector. These hubs would utilize data to understand tourists’ behavior and preferences, creating new and better experiences for travelers. Moreover, these innovations would generate new challenges and job opportunities for the cheetah generation, contributing to the country’s economic growth and development.

Mentorship is a critical component of a 24-hour economy, and while the Cheetah Generation is well-positioned to drive this growth, the government provide easy access to mentors and establish business incubators and accelerators in major cities, provide resources, funding, and networking opportunities for young entrepreneurs to develop innovative businesses that operate around the clock.

Innovation hubs can also be created to bring together entrepreneurs, investors, and researchers to develop new ideas and solutions that support a 24-hour economy. For example, importing the Idea of Silicon Valley to drive a 24-Hour Economy with the Cheetah Generation in tech. The model of Silicon Valley, a hub of technological innovation and entrepreneurship in California, has inspired governments and policymakers around the world to replicate its success.

Creating a conducive ecosystem will be extremely crucial for this to happen. It involves establishing a tech hub, providing infrastructure, funding, and resources for startups and entrepreneurs. The government can designate a specific area as a tech hub, offering tax incentives, funding, and grants to attract businesses and talent. This idea will also foster a culture of innovation which is essential for young people, encourage experimentation risk-taking under mentorship, and collaboration among entrepreneurs, researchers, and investors.

Engaging the Cheetah Generation is critical to driving mentorship under a 24-hour economy. The government through agencies like National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan-NEIP can work with the private sector to establish mentorship programs that pair young entrepreneurs with experienced professionals and investors.

Importing the idea of Silicon Valley can help drive a 24-hour economy in Ghana by riding on the energy and creativity of the Cheetah Generation in the tech space. The silicon model has also been successful in Dubai with its media city.

While Ghana has a significant youth population, it’s essential to recognize the unique potential of the Cheetah Generation, as prophesied by Prof. George Ayittey. As John Mahama implements his programs for the youth, focusing on this dynamic group is crucial for achieving sustainability under a 24-hour economy.

Media personality and social media influencer Ama Pokuaa Memeneda Ba has revealed that despite having approximately 2.5 million followers, she is not earning money from her TikTok content.

In an interview on The Delay Show with Deloris Frimpong Manso, Ama Pokuaa discussed her failed attempts at joining the military, her venture into the media, and her eventual transition into content creation, primarily on TikTok.

When asked if she earns from her TikTok posts, Ama Pokuaa responded, “The videos I post on the platform don’t make me any money. It’s only when a follower gifts me that I can convert those gifts into cash.”

She clarified that while some creators go live on TikTok to request gifts, she does not engage in such practices.

Ama Pokuaa also disclosed that she has not secured any major brand deals and relies instead on occasional promotions for small businesses.

“I don’t have any contracts from brands either. Only one or two business owners contact me to promote their products,” she said.

In a lighthearted moment, she expressed her desire for a brand deal with Delay, saying, “I would be very happy if I got a brand deal from Delay,” which elicited laughter from the host.

Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, Kwame Asuah Takyi Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, Kwame Asuah Takyi

The Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, Kwame Asuah Takyi, has asked the Minister of the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, to investigate the service’s purchase of some 20 buses.

Speaking at an engagement on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, Comptroller-General Takyi said that some individuals, including some officers of the service, are making damaging allegations against him on the purchase of the buses.

He, therefore, made a passionate appeal to the interior minister to investigate the matter in the short period he has before he leaves office.

“Honorable Minister, without permission, I would like to crave your indulgence and lie prostrate before you and before our officers to plead with you to constitute an investigative body to investigate the purchases of 20 30-seater buses for the welfare of the Ghana Immigration Service officers.

“Hon. Minister, this is due to the fact that some few officers think that the Comptroller-General has malicious intentions, that is bad faith, and also malfeasance in the purchase of these buses.

“To the extent that some electronic media have posed questions and have asked questions, trying to tarnish the integrity and character of the Comptroller-General, trying to defame, malign, and denigrate the office of the Comptroller-General and personally the Comptroller-General,” he said.

He added, “So in this respect, Hon. Minister, I’ll be very, very grateful that as I’m about to exit office, this committee will be constituted while I’m in office.”

Accra Sports Stadium fit to host 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers – Acting NSA Boss

0

Mr. Seth Panwum-Bayoyo, the Acting Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), has disclosed that the current state of the Accra Sports Stadium meets the requirements to host Ghana’s game against Chad on March 19, 2025, in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Concerns were raised about the Accra Sports Stadium’s eligibility for the game after videos of the stadium emerged.

However, Panwum-Bayoyo debunked these claims, revealing that the stadium is in good shape following recent renovations.

“You know, since the last incident that led to the closure of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, we have put in every effort to refurbish it. It has still been maintained to its standard to this date,” he said.

Panwum-Bayoyo further emphasized that the Ghana Football Association’s submission of the Accra Sports Stadium to CAF means Ghana’s game against Chad will be played in Accra.

“As far as we know, the GFA has submitted the stadium, and from our communication with them, the game against Chad will be played here,” he added.

Ghana currently sit second in Group I, level on points with leaders Comoros, with nine points from four matches.

Minority boycotts vetting, rejects nomination of Srem-Sai, others

The tension began when Afenyo-Markin asked Srem-Sai to perform ‘Agbadza,’ a traditional Ewe dance. The nominee, however, clarified that

The shocking reason shoes don’t fit if you have larger feet

0

Do you have these in a 42?’ Is it my imagination or is the assistant rolling her eyes. ‘I can look in the back,’ she says, ‘But we don’t have capacity to carry every size in store. Have you tried online?’

‘I was really hoping to try the boots on in the shop,’ I say. ‘To get a feel for the fit. Could you have a look?’ I’m trying to be polite. I’ve worked in retail, and I know it’s tough. The shop assistant might be near the end of a long shift, and she might have had a tough day.

And yet she doesn’t know what it’s like to plod through the world with size 9 feet. She’s wearing the shoes in the window, beautiful green velvet flats with a sparkling buckle.

I suspect she might have got a job in this shop because she loves shoes. It’s easy to love shoes if you know that you can walk into any shop, anywhere, and find a pair that will fit well.

The assistant comes back, empty handed. She shrugs. ‘No, we don’t have them. Try online. Or maybe a specialist shop?’

‘Thanks,’ I say, avoiding her eyes.

This is ridiculous. I’m almost 40, and I want to cry. A specialist shop? I feel like a freak. A freak with size 9 feet.

Even though I don’t want to give the shop any more custom, I love the boots. I have a look online later. They’re available in a European 42 and 43, UK women’s size 9 and 10, but both sizes have sold out.

Clearly, I’m not a freak. There must be quite a lot of women like me. Women with money to spend who are poorly served by the major brands when it comes to shoes.

Women who end up wearing plain boots, or men’s trainers, or footwear that always feels like a compromise in terms of aesthetics and comfort.

Women who have felt excluded from the ultra-feminine shoe fantasy, who grew up wishing that, just once, they could be Cinderella or Carrie Bradshaw.

While shopping for a pair of boots, Daisy Buchanan was told by the store assistant that she might need a specialist shop, making her feel like a freak. A freak with size 9 feet

Or women who wish, most of all, that buying shoes that fit didn’t come with drama, uncertainty and waiting for refunds. Women who wish that they didn’t really have to think about shoes so much at all.

Over the course of my life, my relationship with my body has changed. My weight has fluctuated. I’ve been a dress size 8, and an 18. Now a size 12, I can walk into any clothes shop and find an outfit that fits, but I don’t take it for granted because it hasn’t always been the case.

I’ve also noticed a shift. Shops and brands are rightly responding to consumer pressure and requests for a wider range of clothing sizes. Theoretically, most of us should now be able to walk into any high street shop and find a pair of jeans or a dress that fits.

But this size-inclusive revolution seems to have stopped at the ankle. Put me in any shoe shop, and I’m 14 again, weeping over a pair of jeans in the Topshop changing room.

No matter what size or shape the rest of my body is, my feet remain the same, a wide size 9, and I am still made to feel shame because of it.

Our feet are definitely getting bigger. In 2014, the College of Podiatry found in Britain the average foot had increased by two sizes over the past four decades.

I’ve heard people talk about how their feet went up a size after spending a summer in unstructured shoes, such as Crocs or Birkenstocks, and it’s a well-known fact that feet can get wider post-menopause when a loss of collagen causes a sagging of the arches. So there’s that to look forward to as well.

Why aren’t retailers responding to demand? Former luxury shoe buyer Naomi Braithwaite told the BBC 65 per cent of shoes are manufactured in China, where the average shoe size is 3.5.

She added: ‘Chinese feet are smaller boned and narrower… [and] many of the designers at the luxury end simply didn’t like to see their shoes in bigger sizes as they didn’t think they looked as beautiful as more petite sizes.’

I talked to Laura Schofield, the founder of Otto and Ivy, a brand that sells footwear exclusively in a size 42 and above.

She explained that some of the problem is partly down to the fact that shoes are manufactured all over the world, and sizing isn’t standardised.

‘There isn’t a globalised measurement system,’ she told me. ‘And the issue for manufacturers and retailers when trying to convert EU sizes to UK or US, is that it’s a bit like comparing centimetres and inches.

Laura Schofield is the founder of Otto and Ivy, a brand that sells footwear exclusively in a size 42 and above
Laura Schofield is the founder of Otto and Ivy, a brand that sells footwear exclusively in a size 42 and above

‘The scales are misaligned. There are 6.66mm between each European size, and 8.46mm between each UK or US size. That conversion becomes even more inaccurate the bigger your shoe size.’

There’s confusion between Chinese sizing, British sizing and European sizing, too, which means an inconsistency between brands. According to shoe brand Sargasso & Grey, a UK 7 is a European 40, but in China, a shoe with the same measurements is labelled as a 41. This might be why I can occasionally find a size 8 – or 41 – that fits, if it’s been manufactured in Europe.

However, even high-end manufacturers are overwhelmingly choosing to use factories in China, to keep costs down.

This often means women like me are out of luck – we wonder how on Earth our feet can be getting bigger, when the truth is that the shoes themselves are getting smaller. But even if I can find a pair of shoes in my size, I can rarely find a pair I really like because the choice is so limited.

As an experiment, I just looked at Dune London’s website and found 616 styles available in a size 6 – and only 19 available in a size 9. And one of the results is just a pair of insoles.

For a long time, my shoe shopping strategy was to embrace the two Ds. Discomfort and denial. If I wanted a party shoe, it had to be a strappy sandal, which allowed room for my foot to hang over the edges.

As long as I could prop myself in a corner for the duration, and didn’t try to do anything too wild, like walking or dancing, all was well. There are too many pictures of me as a student, ‘excessively refreshed’ and holding a pair of heels that had become unwearably painful.

Daisy would rather spend an hour at the dentist, having her gums blasted with a water jet, than spend an afternoon searching for a pair of shoes, as it's hard to find anything that both looks and feels good
Daisy would rather spend an hour at the dentist, having her gums blasted with a water jet, than spend an afternoon searching for a pair of shoes, as it’s hard to find anything that both looks and feels good

In my 20s, when I was on a budget, I had very low standards for my wardrobe. I didn’t think about comfort or quality – I was a fast fashion addict.

But as I’ve got older, my attitude has shifted. I want sustainable pieces that have been well made and, crucially, fit me. And when it comes to shoes, it’s almost impossible to find places that cater for me.

Online, I love Otto and Ivy, Laura Schofield’s fantastic e-store for those of us with feet that are size 42 and up.

Laura, a size 43, created the brand because she was so frustrated about the lack of options available to her.

Other brands I love include Air & Grace, and Esska, and they both carry most styles up to a size 43. But buying shoes online isn’t a seamless or straightforward process. I’m never completely confident about what will fit, and it’s not possible to try before you buy.

I don’t look forward to shoe shopping. I’d rather spend an hour at the dentist, having my gums blasted with a water jet and my flossing technique criticised, than spend an afternoon searching for a pair of shoes that I might be excited to buy. It’s hard to find anything that looks good, and it’s almost impossible to find anything that feels good too.

For my sister’s wedding last year, I dreamt of finding a beautiful, well-fitting pair of heels that I could walk and maybe even dance in. The reality was rather different: I wore my trusty gold strappy sandals for the photos and popped on my trainers before the speeches started.

We all know Cinderella’s story, but I often think of the ugly sisters, trying to force their feet into the famous beautiful glass slipper that was far too small.

As young girls, we grow up being told that tiny feet are feminine. If we’ve got bigger feet, like the ugly sisters, we don’t deserve beautiful shoes. I’d like to change that storyline. I don’t even want to meet Prince Charming – but I’d marry the DPD man if he knocked at my door and delivered a perfect pair of party heels in a size 9.

Drivers Hail Motorway Interchange Completion

0

Aerial view of the Tema Motorway

THE COMPLETION of the Tema Motorway Interchange project funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has been met with appreciation from drivers, who say it has reduced traffic congestion and made their journeys faster.

According to a truck driver, Mr. Kaderi Bayirisi, the construction of the interchange has saved them hours of waiting time, reducing financial losses and fuel waste.

“Before the construction of the interchange, we drivers used to spend hours in traffic congestion trying to cross the intersection to our various routes. The unnecessary delay in traffic was causing us money, as we could not make more rounds and also wasted a lot of fuel, causing financial constraints,” he said.

Mr. Bayirisi added, “We want to thank JICA and the Japanese government for funding this project throughout. This has made it easier for us to cross the intersection to our various destinations and has made our work easy.”

The “Project for the Improvement of the Tema Motorway Roundabout” is a $91 million project funded by the Japanese government through JICA to rehabilitate and expand the 19.5-kilometre stretch and transform the motorway into a modern 10-lane divided highway.

Phase I dubbed “Project for Improvement of International Corridors in the Republic of Ghana (Project for Grade Separation of Tema Intersection in Tema)” started in February 2018 with a grant of $57 million, constructed a total of 4 kilometres and 5 service roads for right-turning traffic and was commissioned in June 2020.

The Phase I project constructed the first and longest underground tunnel in the country and a mid-level interchange with ancillary facilities such as pedestrian bridges.

Phase II of the project, funded by a Japanese grant of $27 million, was initiated to address traffic congestion at the five-legged Tema intersection where traffic from Accra and Tema Port converges during peak hours.

Commenced in July 2022 and completed in 2024, Phase II of the project involves constructing a third-tier flyover and features a 142-metre continuous composite steel bridge, a 2,820 square metre steel concrete composite slab, and two steel box section frame piers.

The project’s Assistant Resident Supervisor, Mr. Yaw Tenkorang Osei, highlighted the flyover’s features, including a 142-metre continuous composite steel bridge and a painting system designed to last over 70 years.

Project Manager, Satoshi Yamamoto, disclosed that the Tema Motorway Roundabout Phase II project was officially handed over to the Ghana Highways Authority (GHA) on February 20, 2025, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s infrastructural development.

The project has employed over 200,000 staff and workers and will benefit over 500,000 residences and 90 million road users.

Systematic failures led to NPP’s 2024 election defeat – Appiah-Kubi

0

Former Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections to deep-rooted systemic challenges within the party.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Wednesday, February 26, Mr Appiah-Kubi stressed that the problem was not solely about the candidates but was a widespread concern, even among delegates who were expected to be loyal to certain aspirants.

He explained that while money influenced the selection of candidates, it did not necessarily translate into actual support and voter mobilisation for the party.

His remarks come in the wake of a fact-finding report led by former Majority Leader Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, which outlined the key factors behind the NPP’s electoral loss, particularly in its stronghold, the Ashanti Region.

The report identified multiple factors that contributed to the party’s poor performance, notably the leadership style of former President Nana Akufo-Addo, which was widely perceived as rigid, overly centralised, and dominated by close family members.

Concerns were also raised about the mode of selecting the party’s presidential, parliamentary, national, and regional executives.

The research, which surveyed respondents across all 47 constituencies in the Ashanti Region—including traders, taxi and ‘trotro’ drivers, artisans, teachers, and professionals—revealed that 87% of respondents believed Akufo-Addo was unresponsive to public concerns.

Many noted that while his first term was seen as progressive and inclusive, his second term was marked by resistance to feedback, vindictiveness, and a refusal to reshuffle key ministers—particularly his cousin, former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was largely seen as an extension of Akufo-Addo, making it difficult for him to assert his own vision and leadership.

To restore the party’s credibility and electoral strength, the report proposed key reforms, including internal structural adjustments to eliminate apathy and monetisation of delegate voting, merit-based appointments to reassure the party grassroots, swift conflict resolution to foster unity, and reconnecting with the party’s traditional support base.

If I Have $5m, Why Will I Go to U.S.A? Ghanaians React to Donald Trump’s Announcement of Selling Green Card for $5m

0

Ghanaian social media users have reacted to a new policy from U.S. President, Donald Trump, announcing a new program to sell green cards for $5m.

According to Ghanaian netizens, if they had $5m in the first place, they wouldn’t be in a rush to go to the United States!

President Trump since coming into office has been working hard to reduce immigration into the country.

He has unleashed the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency on illegal immigrants, arresting many and deporting them back to their countries.

These operations stoked fear in many illegal immigrants in the U.S. including some prominent Ghanaian social media personalities.

Despite his attempts to reduce immigraiton, Trump has now announced that he is introducing a new way to immigrate to the country so long as you have money to buy.

He announced the introduction of a new gold card that foreigners can buy for $5m and receive the benefits of a green card.

Ghanaians reacted by revealing they won’t step foot in the U.S.A if they have that money.

“If I have $5m I won’t go close to USA 😂,” one user said.

Ghana: Don’t Mistreat Visa Applicants – Foreign Ministry

0

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Ghana has expressed concern about the inappropriate treatment meted out to visa applicants at the various embassies, high commissions and consulates.

“It has come to the attention of the Ministry that some Ghanaian visa applicants are not treated appropriately when they visit embassies, high commissions as well as consulates for their appointments,” said a statement issued in Accra yesterday and copied to The Ghanaian Times.

It said in some instances, applicants were not provided with conducive waiting areas as they were compelled to be at the mercy of the vagaries of the weather.

“There are also credible reports suggesting that applicants have to wait for about six months to secure appointments,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs queried.

It said there “appears to be no avenue created to provide services to applicants who may require emergency services or may have further inquiries on their applications or when they encounter challenges in using websites for visa applications.”

“These issues are of deep concern to the Ministry, and it will be appreciated if necessary action could be taken to ameliorate the challenges with a view to providing applicants with improved services,” the Ministry stated.

Former National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Michael Omari Wadie, has acknowledged the significant contributions of former President Nana Akufo-Addo to Ghana’s development while admitting that economic challenges and voter apathy contributed to the party’s struggles in the last election.

Speaking in an interview with Lily Mohammed on GHOne TV, Omari Wadie praised Akufo-Addo’s leadership, stating: “Akufo-Addo did a lot for Ghana; nobody can compare, compete, or deny that.”

However, he also pointed out that difficulties are inevitable no matter how well a leader performs.

Omari Wadie further explained that political fatigue often sets in after a government has been in power for a while, making it difficult to maintain public support.

Deputy Minister of Education-designate and Member of Parliament of Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak Deputy Minister of Education-designate and Member of Parliament of Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak

Deputy Minister of Education-designate and Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, has emphasized the critical role of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in Ghana’s industrial growth.

Speaking during his vetting before Parliament on Tuesday, February 25, he highlighted the need for sustained investment in STEM to prepare Ghanaian students for the fourth industrial revolution.

“STEM is the future. If we are to make progress as a nation and prepare our children to fully participate in the future, we must continue to invest in STEM and expand facilities to ensure every Ghanaian child benefits,” Dr. Apaak stated.

He acknowledged the efforts of the previous government in advancing STEM education and noted that Ghana currently has ten STEM schools at various stages of completion, with one fully operational.

However, he pointed out that STEM education is a capital-intensive initiative and cannot rely solely on government funding. He proposed mobilizing local resources and forming partnerships with donor organizations to support STEM development.

“I know, for example, that the MasterCard Foundation has played a significant role in supporting the government and the Ministry of Education. We must seek similar partnerships to promote and mainstream STEM education,” he added.

Dr. Apaak reaffirmed his commitment to building on existing STEM initiatives, stating that while the concept of STEM is not new, the introduction of dedicated STEM schools represents a significant step in enhancing Ghana’s education system.

His remarks underscored the government’s focus on STEM as a key driver of national development and industrial advancement.

Appoint an Nzemas to Ghana Gas CEO position

0

The Concerned Youth of Nzema Manle in the Western region has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to, as a matter of tradition, appoint a qualified Nzema as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) at Atuabo.

According to the group, recent happenings at the Ghana Gas Company, have left most well-meaning Ghanaians particularly, persons familiar with the company’s modus operandi and people within the Gas sites, surprised and agitated.

This was contained in a press statement issued and signed by Secretary to the Concerned Youth of Nzema Manle, Mr Albert Kweku Blay on behalf of the group and copied to the media.

The statement said “last week, as our compatriots were organizing with the divisional police command for a peaceful demonstration, we were happy to read on social media that Dr Ben Asante had resigned as CEO of Ghana Gas.

“However, after a further investigation from reliable sources, we learnt that Dr Asante had actually been reassigned.”

The statement said this unexpected turn of events briefly sparked a sense of relief with the anticipation that the government’s action would address the concerns regarding the leadership at Ghana Gas.

However, the situation was frustrating when the government failed to appoint a permanent CEO leaving the Company under the leadership of a Caretaker CEO.

According to the statement, the individual now serving in this temporal capacity, currently, the Director of Operations, seems to be trying desperately to secure the CEO position permanently.

The statement said “this is concerning, notably, since the key assets like the four generator sets at Atuabo site deteriorated alarmingly under his watch.

“Despite these issues, he appears to be positioning himself as a viable candidate for the CEO role, which directly contradicts the government’s commitment to appointing someone from the Western Region especially the Nzema land.

While we respect the right of the Caretaker CEO to lobby for the position, we are deeply disturbed by the Machiavellian tactics employed to achieve this goal which include efforts to sow discord within the Western Region and manipulate public opinion.”

The statement observed that “this individual has become a media personality with news outlets promoting him and spreading misleading narratives.

“Some media outlets have even published internal photographs and false claims regarding his supposed acceptance by Ghana Gas staff.”

The statement said what is more troubling is that “the Caretaker CEO and his supporters have begun circulating false claims that the country’s energy security is at risk if an internal engineer is not appointed to head the company”.

It added that “this preposterous rhetoric is not only unfounded but also dangerous as it creates unnecessary fear and instability, undermining the government’s efforts to appoint a qualified CEO.

“We believe that such tactics, which seeks to manipulate national sentiments for selfish gain, should be treated as a threat to national security and the relevant authorities should act to prevent any actions that may jeopardize the integrity of our national assets.”

The statement also noted as essential to highlight the need for a CEO who can help the government’s developmental agenda, particularly regarding resource management.

The statement said appointing an indigenous expert from the Western Region, would significantly contribute to fulfilling the President’s promises of ensuring equitable development for all Regions of the country.

“We wish to emphasize that our call for an indigenous person from the Western Region to be appointed CEO, is rooted in the spirit of the 1992 Constitution with reference to the Directive Principle of State Policy which mandates that regional balance be considered in public appointments.”

It observed that the current state of affairs, shows that the Western Region has not been adequately represented at the highest levels of state companies.

“This Regional imbalance is unfair and contrary to our constitution’s principles of equitable opportunity and representation.”

The statement believes that significant socio-economic reasons sexist for appointing a native to lead Ghana Gas.

It said “right years ago, the Region had a visible and substantial representation among the staff of Ghana Gas”.

“However, this is not the case today as the rate of employment opportunities for indigenous people has declined dramatically”.

This, the statement noted, had led to a situation where even minor jobs are given to individuals outside the Region while the local community’s participation in the company’s operations, has diminished.

It pointed out that “in commitment to the national goal, their people provided lands without prior compensation with the view that at least, the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility would spur growth.

“On the contrary, under the guise of redefinition of the operational area, the company decided to renege on its natural commitment relatively with other Regions having received far more developmental projects than the Western Region, a gross injustice to the people who have contributed so much to Ghana’s energy sector.

The statement observed that the Western Region has made immense contributions to the national economy and it is time for the Region to benefit from its share of national resources.

It therefore implored government to honour her commitment to the people of the Western Region by appointing a qualified and deserving CEO of Ghana Gas.

The moment the fan presented the bracelet to Ruben Amorim The moment the fan presented the bracelet to Ruben Amorim

A passionate Manchester United fan has presented a heartfelt gift to head coach, Ruben Amorim. The gift — a “good luck” bracelet, is in hopes of turning around the fortunes of the struggling Premier League giants.

Following much excitement over his appointment, Amorim officially joined Manchester United in November 2024, ending his successful tenure at Sporting CP. Given his impressive record in Portugal, United fans had high expectations for him to transform the club’s struggles. However, his tenure so far has been anything but smooth.

With just four wins in 15 Premier League games, Amorim’s side currently sits 15th on the table, sparking frustrations among supporters who are demanding swift improvements.

Amid the growing concerns, one caring fan decided to offer a token of support, handing the Portuguese manager a “good luck” bracelet and expressing hope that he turns things around.

Amorim graciously accepted the gesture, thanking the fan and assuring her that he would wear it. He will be hoping the bracelet brings some much-needed luck when United face relegation-threatened Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.

Supreme Court stops Koforifua High Court from sentencing Akwatia MP

0

The Supreme Court has by a 4-1 majority decision stayed the High Court in Koforidua from sentencing the Member of Parliament for the Akwatia Constituency, Ernest Yaw Kumi in a contempt case pending the final determination of a motion seeking to quash the ruling.

Justice Gabriel Pwamang, dissented while the four other members of the panel approved the stay.

Background

In a motion on notice for an order for certiorari and prohibition, the MP through his counsel contended that the High Court judge committed a jurisdictional error of law on the face of the record when he assumed jurisdiction in Parliamentary Election Petition at Akwatia Constituency at the time when the Electoral Commission had not published the Gazette Notification.

The MP argued that the High Court Judge breached the rules of natural justice when he proceeded to hear and determine the contempt application despite the pendency of his (the MP) motion to set aside the said contempt application for want of jurisdiction

According to him, the High Court Judge was also biased and highly prejudiced against him when he, among others, refused to grant his counsel audience on the basis that counsel had not filed “Appearance” in the contempt application.

The MP sought a declaration that the Petition filed by Henry Boakye-Yiadom, the first Interested Party (IP) on December 31, 2024 in the absence of the Gazette Notification of the Parliamentary Election Result to which the election relates was incompetent  as same did not properly invoke the jurisdiction of the High Court and that “any order founded on the same is void  and of no effect.”

Mr Kumi also sought a “declaration that the Contempt Proceedings and Ruling dated 19th February 2025, found on premature election petition filed on 31st December 2024 is void and of no effect”.

The MP prayed for an order of certiorari from the Supreme Court quashing the Koforidua High Court ruling dated February 19, 2025, the petition  filed on December 31, 2024 and Interim Injunction order on January 2, 2025, and ruling on January 6, 2025, made pursuant  to the said premature Election Petition, filed December 31, 2024.

Ghanaian laws don’t support double jeopardy – Srem-Sai

0

Justice Srem-Sai, Deputy Attorney General and Justice Minister-designate has addressed concerns regarding the potential for multiple prosecutions of an individual for the same offense.

He emphasized that once a person has been acquitted and discharged by a court of competent jurisdiction, they cannot be prosecuted again for the same offense by another legal body.

This principle, known as double jeopardy, is a fundamental aspect of Ghanaian criminal jurisprudence. It ensures that an individual cannot be tried twice for the same offense after a valid conviction or acquittal.

His comments arose in the context of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) naming former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as a suspect in multiple high-profile corruption investigations, including those related to the National Cathedral project and Strategic Mobilization Limited.

Srem-Sai clarified that if a person were to be acquitted in these cases, the Attorney General would not have the legal grounds to initiate another prosecution on the same matters.

This stance aligns with Ghana’s legal protections against double jeopardy, which are enshrined in both constitutional and statutory law.

During his appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on February 26, 2025, Justice Srem-Sai, said, “I do not think that the law supports prosecuting one person on the same transaction twice.

“So, once the person is prosecuted and acquitted on that particular transaction, that should be the end. I don’t think it will be lawful for anyone to start another prosecution in respect of the same transaction.”

Justice Srem-Sai’s remarks reinforce the commitment to upholding the double jeopardy principle within Ghana’s legal system, ensuring that once an individual is acquitted of a specific offense, they are not subjected to subsequent prosecutions for the same act.

Vice-Chancellor’s Community Initiative Programme launch at UEW

0

By J.K Nabary

Winneba (C/R), Feb. 26, GNA-The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has for more than three decades, stood as a pillar of excellence in teacher education and capacity building in Ghana, training thousands of professionals, shaping the future of education, governance, and industry.

However, the true measure of a university’s impact is not only in the degrees it awards but also in how it uplifts and empowers the communities surrounding it.

Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, Vice-Chancellor of UEW said this in an address he delivered at the launch of Vice-Chancellor’s Community Initiative Programme (VCCIP), under the theme: “UEW Future Forge: Harnessing the Potentials of the Youth for Total Development,” at Winneba.

The objectives for the establishment of Community Initiative Programme by the University are to improve the standards of education in Effutu and Ajumako  the University’s catchments Area.

It is also to provide financial support for needy students in the two traditional Areas, especially those pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at UEW and to equip the youth with marketable skills to enhance their employability.

The VC said UEW’s embarked on that bold initiative to give back to the communities that host them.

“It is our resolve to extend the transformative power of education beyond the corners of our lecture halls and into the lives of those who need it most.”

“However, the true measure of a university’s impact is not only in the degrees it awards but also in how it uplifts and empowers the communities surrounding it, the VC noted.

He said, UEW was not just- an institution of higher learning but a partner in progress, a beacon of hope, and a catalyst for change.

“We, through the Vice-Chancellor’s Community Initiative Programme (VCCIP), are reaffirming our role as a socially responsible institution, one that recognises the challenges facing the youth, families, and communities of Effutu, Ajumako, and beyond and take decisive action to address them”.

According to him the initiative was rooted in the belief that education should be inclusive, equitable, and life-changing, driven by their vision to ensure that no child was left behind, no potential wasted, and no dream was out of reach.

He disclosed that the Initiative’s focus was on three thrust areas; Neighbourhood Academic Programme at providing academic support to improve standard of education in Effutu and Ajumako, Financial Support Programme for needy students especially in STEM, and Community Apprenticeship Programme which covers training and certification in areas such as food and nutrition, hospitality and family life management.

“The long-term goal is to ensure that beneficiaries of the initiative are well-positioned for enrolment into the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) to pursue tertiary education.”

“As we launch this initiative today, let us remember that the success of VCCIP will depend on the collective efforts of government agencies, traditional leaders, parents, teachers, students, and development partners which require dedication, commitment, and a shared vision for lasting change.”

He further stated that the Programme was not just about providing opportunities, but transforming lives, fostering resilience, and building a brighter future for generations to come.

Prof Mitchual stated that the foundation for a legacy that would shape the destiny of the University’s communities and redefine the role of higher education in national development had been laid.

“Let us move forward together with a renewed sense of purpose, knowing that through this initiative, we are not just educating minds; we are building futures, we are changing lives, and we are shaping a better Ghana.”

He said they were implementing these strategic measures to ensure that young individuals, parents, and families in their host communities were provided with the necessary education, skills, and opportunities to achieve success.

“Let me reiterate that the Vice-Chancellor’s Community Initiative Programme is open to all natives of Effutu, Ajumako and surrounding townships, hence the need for all of us to invest in the future together, knowing that every cedi, every resource, and every effort contribute to building a stronger and more prosperous society.”

Nana Owusu Ofori, Progressive Peoples Party’s (PPP) National Chairman and indigene of Effutu praised the university for its wavering commitment to Effutu and Ajumako and its surrounding communities adding that the initiative needed funds to support it.

He observed that in modern times, Universities have an obligation to render service to their host communities.

“The new agenda UEW has initiated which is critical and social and I fully support it and also expressed the need for all hands to be on deck at contributing their quota to towards it to have future credible manpower as a country,” he stated.

Neenyi Ghartey VII, Effutu Oma Odefe and the Chancellor of UEW, who chaired the event applauded the initiative and stressed that the prudent decision by management of the university to support the education of needy children would go a long way to shape the future of the citizens in Ajumako and Effutu.

“Let us all commit not just in words, but in action to ensure that this initiative fulfilled its promise of empowerment, transformation and lasting impact on the two Traditional Areas,” Neenyi Ghartey added.
