The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has criticised the government for failing to meet the 30 percent female representation in political appointments as required by the Affirmative Action Act 2024.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, he questioned measures, that the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has taken to ensure its effective implementation.

According to him, despite claims of compliance, the government had fallen short of its obligation to ensure gender equity in his Cabinet.

“What measures has the ministry put in place to ensure the effective and efficient implementation of the Affirmative Action Act 2024. Mr. Speaker, the minister is in office, government is being formed.

“So, you should tell us that your government has failed in putting in place measures to meet this 30 percent threshold. You should let us know. The government has failed, Mr. Speaker, the government has thus failed in meeting this threshold,” he noted.

President John Dramani Mahama, delivering his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) in his second term on Thursday, February 27, 2025, stated that he was working to reach the target of 30 percent target quota for political appointments for women as stipulated in the Act.

“I am pleased to report that women currently make up 23.21 percent of all appointments, and we are diligently working toward reaching the target set forth in Act 1121,” he added.

He said he would collaborate with all relevant stakeholders, including development partners and Civil Society Organisations,to prioritise gender equality, equity, and social justice.
