Black Queens’ friendly against Raja Athletic Women cancelled

0

Players of the Black Queens before a game Players of the Black Queens before a game

The Black Queens scheduled friendly match against Raja Casablanca Athletic Women has been called off due to “unforeseen circumstances.” The game was part of their preparations during their tour in Morocco.

Ghana’s women’s national team suffered a last-minute defeat against Morocco on Friday, February 21, 2025, extending their winless run since their 3-1 victory over Namibia in December 2023.

The match against Raja Athletic was meant to provide an opportunity for the team to regain momentum and for newly appointed head coach, Kim Björkegren, to further assess his squad.

However, just minutes before kickoff, the team’s official social media pages confirmed the cancellation, citing circumstances beyond their control.

Currently ranked 66th in the world and fifth in Africa, the Black Queens are eager to bounce back and put on a strong performance at the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Having last competed in the tournament in 2018 and missing the previous edition in Morocco, these friendly matches were intended to help them get back on track for a successful campaign.

Consistently producing hit songs doesn’t stifle creativity – DJ Slim counters Article Wan

0

Entertainment pundit, DJ Slim

Media personality, DJ Slim, has responded to Article Wan’s recent comments about the challenges of consistently producing hit songs.

One would recall that Article Wan recently stated that having constant hit songs can stifle an artist’s creativity due to the pressure it creates.

He mentioned that periods without hits allow artistes to relax, reflect, and refine their craft.

However, DJ Slim has disagreed with this assertion, citing examples of Ghanaian musicians like Shatta Wale, Sarkodie, and Stonebwoy, who have consistently delivered hit songs over the years.

Speaking on his show, DJ Slim referenced Shatta Wale’s successful years between 2015 and 2018, when the dancehall artiste released several hit songs every year.

“If not for anybody, I can reference Sarkodie, Shatta Wale, and Stonebwoy. These people have been having back-to-back hit songs for years. I want Article Wan to look at his godfather Shatta Wale during the 2015-18 era, when the man was dropping hit songs like crazy.

“He can even go into the shower and compose a hit song. It was consistent for years. There were years Wale would drop 13 bangers. How many months do we even have in a year?” he queried.

While DJ Slim agreed that an artiste’s creative ability can sometimes be ‘shaky,’ especially during troubled times, he argued that consistent hit songs are achievable through hard work and discipline.

“I’ve seen interviews of big superstars where they say that sometimes when they are on stage, their next venue is the studio. So, contrary to what Article Wan says, I believe it’s hard work,” he stated.

Kurt Okraku Reaffirms Commitment to Football Reform

Kurt Okraku

In the wake of the tragic incident that claimed the life of Francis ‘Nana Pooley’ Frimpong, a passionate Asante Kotoko supporter, GFA President Kurt Okraku has reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to the ongoing journey of change in Ghanaian football.

Okraku acknowledged the tough moments the GFA has faced in its quest for reform, which began in 2019. “The journey to change Ghanaian football will be tough, and we are going through a tough moment. But we will continue on this journey of change, the journey that we started in 2019,” Okraku said.

Okraku’s remarks come at a critical juncture for the GFA, as it navigates the aftermath of the Nana Pooley’s tragedy and works to ensure justice is served.

He emphasised that the GFA’s actions in the immediate aftermath of the incident were under his command, and he praised the swift response of the association in working closely with Kotoko and the Ghana Police.

The GFA’s commitment to reform has been a central focus since Okraku’s election in 2019. The president has vowed to address the longstanding issues plaguing Ghanaian football, including corruption, poor governance, and a lack of transparency.

Despite the challenges, Okraku remains steadfast in his vision for a brighter future for the sport.

My Wedding Ring Is Not Cheap, It Was GH₵1500 – Kasongo’s Wife Brags

0

Agnes Adoma, the wife of Isaac Obeng, popularly known as Kasongo, has responded to critics who mocked their marriage after their pre-wedding photos went viral.

While some social media users focused on their love story, others cruelly labeled Kasongo as “ugly” and ridiculed various aspects of their union, including Agnes’s wedding ring.

In a recent interview, Agnes set the record straight regarding the cost of her wedding ring, shutting down claims that it was cheap. She disclosed that her husband recently upgraded her ring, proving his commitment to her.

According to her, the new ring cost GH₵1,500, contrary to the false reports suggesting otherwise. She confidently asked critics to stop spreading misinformation about the value of her jewellery, emphasizing that price does not determine the strength of their love.

Meanwhile, Kasongo also addressed the mockery surrounding his looks, making bold claims about his appearance. He insisted that he is far more handsome than popular Ghanaian celebrities Lilwin and Patapaa, both of whom have also been subjected to public scrutiny over their looks. He stated that those who call him “ugly” should first compare him to these celebrities before making such remarks.

Despite the criticism, the couple appears unbothered, standing firm in their love and proving that happiness in marriage is beyond physical appearances.

Nana B demands retraction and apology from MFWA

National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Henry Nana Boakye National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Henry Nana Boakye

Lawyers for the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly referred to as Nana B, have issued a formal demand for a retraction and apology from the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) following a recent publication on the alleged ghost names scandal at the National Service Authority (NSA).

In a letter addressed to MFWA on Monday, February 24, 2025, Nana B’s legal representatives, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah & Partners, argued that the report falsely linked their client to management decisions at the National Service Authority (NSA), formerly the National Service Scheme (NSS), from 2017 to 2024.

They emphasised that their client only served as Deputy Executive Director of the NSS between January 2017 and September 2018, when he resigned after being elected National Youth Organiser of the NPP.

“Our client instructs us that sometime in February 2025 you aired on TV3, a purported investigative story titled ‘NSS Scandal, the Inside Story,’ which story has been republished and discussed on several other media platforms.

“While our client is resolute that no wrong was done by the officers of the NSA over the past eight (8) years, we have his instructions to bring to your notice that he was Deputy Executive Director between January 2017 and September 2018, when he resigned after being elected the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP),” it said.

Consequently, the lawyers demanded that within seven days, the MFWA retracts the allegations and issue an apology.

“We have our client’s instructions to demand from you and we hereby do, that within seven (7) days of receipt of this letter, you retract and/or cause to be retracted, the aforementioned story as published on TV3.

“We also have our client’s instructions to demand that you issue an apology for the false publication within seven (7) days of receipt of this letter to be published in the same manner as the aforementioned false allegations were published,” it added.

They warned that failure to comply with these demands would lead to further legal action.

A Legacy of Freedom and Change

0

“At long last, the battle has ended! And Ghana, your beloved country, is free forever!”—These historic words, spoken by Dr. Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah on March 6, 1957, marked the dawn of Ghana’s independence.

They serve as a powerful reminder of the nation’s journey from colonial rule to sovereignty, from oppression to self-determination.

Ghana was the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence, igniting a wave of liberation movements across the continent.

A Night of Freedom: The Road to Independence

Sixty-eight years ago, on the night of March 6, 1957, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah stood before a massive crowd at the Old Polo Grounds in Accra, a place once reserved for British colonists. With passion and conviction, he declared:

“Ghana, your beloved country, is free forever!”

“We have awakened. We shall no longer go back to sleep anymore. Today, from now on, there is a new Africa in the world!”

At the stroke of midnight, the Union Jack was lowered, and in its place, Ghana’s new national flag was hoisted—a powerful symbol of freedom. The flag’s colors carried deep meaning:

  • Red represented the blood shed for independence.
  • Yellow symbolized the nation’s wealth in gold.
  • Green signified Ghana’s rich natural resources.
  • At the center, a black star paid tribute to pan-African activist Marcus Garvey and his Black Star Line, symbolizing African unity and empowerment.

Celebrating Independence Day Through the Years

Since 1957, Ghana’s Independence Day has been marked annually on March 6 with parades, cultural displays, and speeches from national leaders.

The heart of the celebrations has traditionally been Accra’s Black Star Square, also known as Independence Square, where schoolchildren, security forces, and civil service groups participate in a grand march-past.

Cities across the country also host concerts, festivals, and community gatherings, reinforcing national pride and unity.

Decentralizing the Celebration: A New Tradition

For many years, Independence Day was exclusively celebrated in Accra. However, in 2017, President Nana Akufo-Addo introduced a rotational hosting policy, moving the national celebration to different regions annually.

The objectives of this policy included:

  1. Promoting national unity by allowing different regions to feel included in the national event.
  2. Driving local development through increased tourism and business opportunities.
  3. Showcasing the unique culture and achievements of each host region.

The Parade: A Symbol of Discipline and Patriotism

A major highlight of Independence Day is the parade, which features schoolchildren, security forces, and civil service groups marching in unison.

Dressed in colorful uniforms and carrying banners, participants symbolize discipline, unity, and patriotism—core values that reinforce national pride.

The Cost of Independence Day Celebrations

Over the years, Ghana’s Independence Day celebrations have incurred significant expenses. The 50th anniversary in 2007 (Ghana@50) cost approximately $20 million, while in recent years, annual celebrations have ranged between GHC16.5 million and GHC15 million.

Mahama’s Decision to Scale Down the 2025 Celebrations

Amid economic challenges, President John Dramani Mahama has announced a change in the 2025 Independence Day celebrations. To cut costs, he has suspended the rotational hosting policy and centralized the event at Jubilee House in Accra.

This decision aims to reduce government spending on non-essential events, ensuring that resources are directed toward pressing national needs.

Conclusion

Ghana’s Independence Day has evolved over the years—from grand national parades to a rotating regional celebration, fostering unity and economic growth. However, due to high costs, the 2025 event will be more modest, reflecting current economic realities.

Despite these adjustments, March 6 remains a powerful symbol of Ghana’s resilience, unity, and unwavering spirit of freedom—a legacy that continues to inspire generations.

NPP blames Adwoa Safo for party’s 2024 parliamentary defeat

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) executives in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency have accused former Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, of orchestrating the party’s defeat in the 2024 parliamentary elections.

They alleged that Adwoa Safo colluded with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to weaken the chances of the NPP’s candidate, Ambassador Aaron Mike Oquaye Junior.

Speaking at a press conference, Dome-Kwabenya NPP Constituency Chairman, Robert Osei Bonsu, claimed that Adwoa Safo’s failure to support the party and her alleged diversion of resources played a major role in fueling voter apathy and the NPP’s defeat.

“Adwoa Safo was absent from all campaign activities before and after losing the NPP primaries in 2024. She redirected NPP campaign resources to support the NDC candidate, neglected her parliamentary responsibilities, missed crucial votes such as the E-Levy bill, travelled to the U.S. without notice, and failed to attend assembly meetings. Efforts by the Chief of Staff and other senior figures to reconcile her with the party’s candidate were ignored,” he stated.
The NPP executives dismissed allegations from a youth group blaming them for the party’s loss, insisting they effectively managed the constituency in Adwoa Safo’s absence.

The NPP leadership in Dome-Kwabenya reaffirmed their commitment to rebuilding the party in the constituency and implementing strategies to reclaim the lost seat in future elections.

Ghanaian startups face higher costs as AWS introduces 21% tax

0

Amazon Web Services (AWS) will implement a 21% tax on cloud services for customers in Ghana starting March 1, 2025. The tax will drive up operational costs for Ghanaian startups that depend on the global cloud service provider to store sensitive data and power essential digital operations.

This tax comprises a 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) and an additional 6% in levies, including the National Health Insurance Levy, the Ghana Education Trust Fund Levy, and the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy, AWS said in a notice to customers seen by TechCabal.

The introduction of the tax could place Ghanaian startups at a competitive disadvantage compared to counterparts in regions with more favorable financial conditions for cloud adoption. In January 2023, AWS announced that it will now accept payments in Naira, alongside seven other local currencies, to help customers avoid foreign exchange costs and payment friction.

Ghana’s broader tax landscape has long posed challenges for startups, with multiple levies and compliance costs affecting business operations. In 2023, Ghana’s parliament introduced new taxes for individuals and businesses as part of measures to reset the economy months after increasing its VAT from 12.5% to 15%. For startups relying heavily on digital infrastructure, like cloud services, these financial pressures can slow product development and market entry.

AWS’s new tax could also push Ghanaian startups to explore alternative cloud providers or on-premises infrastructure solutions, potentially slowing down their growth and innovation cycles.

Despite these challenges, forecasts suggest resilience in the market. Ghana’s public cloud sector is projected to reach $306.10m in revenue in 2025, according to Statista. Ghana, home to hundreds of startups, has built a vibrant startup ecosystem that depends heavily on affordable cloud services for development and deployment. However, the new AWS tax threatens to undermine the affordability of these critical services.

TGMAs 2025: Group of the Year will be reinstated if it’s competitive

0

PRO of Charterhouse, Robert Klah PRO of Charterhouse, Robert Klah

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Charterhouse, Robert Klah, has stated that the possibility of reinstating the Group of the Year category at this year’s Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) remains uncertain.

His comments come after calls for the category’s return gained momentum following the impressive performances of groups like Dope Nation and Team Eternity Ghana (TEG) in the year under review.

However, during an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Klah stated that it is too early to confirm its inclusion, as the TGMA board has yet to assess entries and make a final decision.

“At the moment, I’m not in a position to say yes or no to the question because the board is yet to meet. The decision will be taken after an assessment of groups in the year under review,” he said.

He stated that Charterhouse has always been open to reinstating the category if the competition is strong.

“I want to set the record straight that Charterhouse has always said Group of the Year will be reinstated if it’s competitive,” he added.

The Group of the Year award has been absent from the TGMA since 2021, when gospel group, Bethel Revival Choir, won the title, beating notable groups like R2Bees, La Meme Gang, and Dope Nation.

Since then, despite consistent releases and performances from various groups, the category has not been featured, raising questions about the criteria used by the TGMA board.

This year, groups like Team Eternity Ghana and Dope Nation have dominated the airwaves with hits such as Defe Defe and Zormizor, reigniting calls for the category’s return.

Music duo Lali X Lola also addressed the issue in a letter to the TGMA board dated February 3, highlighting the resurgence of talented groups in Ghana’s music scene and urging the board to reconsider.

In response, Klah encouraged groups to explore other categories instead of limiting themselves to Group of the Year.

“Why do they want to limit themselves to just Group of the Year when they can file for other categories?” he asked.

He cited Team Eternity Ghana as an example, noting their eligibility for various gospel categories, including Most Popular, Artiste of the Year, and Collaboration of the Year.

“Same with other groups who may be doing other genres. They shouldn’t be restricted to just Group of the Year; they have many options by filing for other categories,” he added.

As the TGMA board prepares to review entries and finalise categories, stakeholders in the music industry await a decision on whether the Group of the Year award will make a comeback.

Asante Akyem North MP condemns Fatimatu Abubakar’s remarks on NDC MPs’ English proficiency

The Member of Parliament of Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, has condemned remarks made by former Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, regarding the English proficiency of some National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs.

In an interview on GHOne TV, and monitored by GhanaWeb, on Monday, February 24, 2025, he explained that the ability to speak English fluently should not be a measure of one’s competence in parliamentary proceedings.

“I don’t think that it was the best for the former minister to say that. We all go through certain processes to become members of Parliament, and we know that English is used in almost all of these processes. But if you are saying that someone cannot express themselves because they cannot speak English properly, I think that is very unfortunate,” he said.

He further explained that public speaking challenges can differ among individuals, stating that some MPs may struggle to express themselves before large audiences despite their competence in smaller settings.

“Some people really do not have the courage to speak when there is a large audience. That is the actual problem, not the fact that they cannot speak English,” he added.

During a recent interview on Movement TV, Fatimatu Abubakar mocked some NDC MPs, alleging that their struggle with the English language had limited their participation in parliamentary debates.

She claimed that this had inadvertently allowed the NPP Minority caucus to dominate discussions, making them appear as though they were in the majority.

Amid reports that Gifty Oware-Mensah, an Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association and former Deputy Director of the National Service Authority (NSA), is wanted by the National Intelligence Bureau for questioning, GhanaWeb has learned that she is in Morocco with the Black Queens.

GhanaWeb sources indicate that Gifty Oware-Mensah, who is the chairperson of the Management Committee of the senior female national team, is in Morocco with the team, discharging her duties.

It is believed that Gifty Oware-Mensah will be flying with the team to Ghana when they finish their training tour in Morocco.

The sources tell GhanaWeb that Gifty Oware-Mensah will avail herself of accountability as she believes she conducted her duties as a Deputy Director of the NSA with utmost integrity.

The Black Queens are on a training tour in Morocco and played their first game under coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren on Friday, February 21, 2025. The Black Queens were edged out 1-0 by the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco.

The Queens are expected to take on Raja Club Athletic Women in their final game of the brief training tour on Monday, February 24, 2025.

Earlier, there were reports that the Ghana Football Association was considering holding emergency elections due to the supposed absence of Gifty Oware-Mensah, but those reports were quashed by the FA, which indicated that Gifty Oware-Mensah was still part of the FA’s Executive Council and attended meetings.

It is believed that the NIB wants to speak to Gifty Oware-Mensah as part of ongoing investigations into alleged payroll fraud at the NSA.

Oware-Mensah is a member of the GFA Executive Council, co-owner of Berry Ladies Football Club, and Vice President of Berekum Chelsea.

Kenya receives 17 rare antelopes from the US

0

The mountain bongos have to go through a series of adaptation phases The mountain bongos have to go through a series of adaptation phases

Kenya has received 17 mountain bongos – a very rare type of antelope – from a conservation centre in the United States.

The antelopes are third-generation descendants of mountain bongos taken from Kenya in the 1960s.

The return of the critically endangered animals, from the Rare Species Conservation Foundation in Florida, was hailed as a “monumental step” in Kenya’s conservation efforts.

From about 500 in the 1970s, less than 100 mountain bongos are estimated to remain in the wild in Kenya, according to the Kenya Wildlife Service.

The KWS said this was due to habitat loss, poaching, illegal activities, disease, and small fragmented populations.

Tourism Minister Rebecca Miano described the arrival of the bongos at the country’s main airport on Sunday night as “emotional and so cool”, and a benefit for Kenya’s tourism and conservation sectors.

The animals were taken to wildlife sanctuaries in Meru county near Mount Kenya, where they will be nurtured before they are gradually introduced to their natural habitat.

Ms Miano said the mountain bongo, “a species originally only found in Kenya, has suffered untold grief over the decades… dwindling to alarming proportions”.

She said the plan was to grow the population to 700 by 2050.

The mountain bongo, which has a bright chestnut-red colour with narrow white stripes, is the largest African forest-dwelling antelope, according to the KWS.

It is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a Critically Endangered species – with more individuals in captivity than in the wild.

The first repatriation to Kenya was in 2004 when 18 mountain bongos were flown into the country.

KWS director-general Erastus Kanga said Kenya was expecting another batch of the mountain bongos from zoos in Europe in the next three months.

From captivity, the bongos have to go through a series of adaptation phases for them to build the immunity needed to survive in the wild.

In 2022, the head of conservancy at Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy (MKWC) told a Kenyan TV station that some of the bongos repatriated in 2004 had successfully been integrated into the wild and had started breeding.

The MKWC official, Robert Aruho, however, said that other had died from tick-borne diseases, adding that building immunity takes time.

I Told My Wife If She’s Not Happy With Me, We Should Divorce – Bishop Obinim Reacts to Cheating Allegations

0

Ghanaian man of God, Bishop Daniel Obinim has revealed that he told his wife that if she wasn’t happy with how he dealt with news of his alleged infidelity, she can go ahead and divorce him on the spot.

Obinim, speaking to his congregation in regards to allegations of him marrying another woman, said he put it bluntly to his wife that if she’s not happy, they can separate.

However, he said he also told her that if she gave him a chance, he will face the allegations, which he called a ‘fire’, squarely and put out the fire.

Obinim said his wife gave him permission to put out the fire which he did and their marriage is now on solid footing.

Recall that a few weeks ago news went viral from a certain self-acclaimed prophetess alleging that Obinim had married actress, Benedicta Gafah on the blind side of his wife.

Both Benedicta Gafah and Florence Obinim came out to debunk the news, and Bishop Obinim is now addressing it.

Mavic Crossmax Boa shoe review: stiff, light, and well made but insoles need a rethink

0

Mavic’s Crossmax Boa is marketed as an XC or cross-country mountain bike shoe, and while I’m not particularly fond of the notion that gravel riding is merely a throwback to ’90s mountain biking, many products do overlap significantly. That being said, Mavic offers another shoe, the Cosmic Boa SPD, which bears many similarities to the Crossmax I had on test, with identical uppers but a smoother sole designed for touring if your gravel riding rarely requires any time walking.

They looked great when I saw them at the Eurobike show, but given that most of my gravel riding is either wet and muddy or rocky in the Peak District, with a few hike-a-bike sections, I thought the Crossmax’s grippier outsole would be a better fit for most of my riding. So, how do they compare to the best gravel shoes?

‘Education Key To Climate Change’

0

Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse

The Executive Secretary of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse says education on climate change is required to enable people to understand the impacts of global warming on sustainable livelihood.

According to her, though government has put in place measures to help raise awareness on how people contribute to global warming, more is required by all sections of society to mitigate climate impact activities.

Speaking in an interview with journalists at the  Green Climate Fund CSO Readiness training workshop at Dodowa in Accra, she referred to how running water intended for the wetlands end up flooding people’s homes, especially in the cities, due to the impact of climate change.

HATOF Foundation, with grant from Green Climate Fund (GCF), and support from the Ministry of Finance, is implementing a two-year project, titled “Capacity Building and Knowledge Management on Climate Change for Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Ghana towards the implementation of the Nationally Determined Contributions”.

She indicated that the EPA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the HATOF to embark on series of educational programmes in communities, to educate the general public on the impact of climate change.

She said “education is key in all our activities, Ghanaians must be aware and know the actions that they have to take. We need to correct each other, we need to know the challenges that we are facing and find solutions to them.”

“People should even understand that the kind of materials that are used in building even has impact on climate. People know that they are not supposed to cut trees, it is good, but we need to do more to really sustain our environment,” she added.

Touching on plastic waste, she said efforts were being made to fully address that challenge, but it will require the input of all Ghanaians to help ban plastic waste, though it may take time and alternatives provided.

Prof. Klutse also cautioned illegal miners to immediately desist from operating in any area without permits from her outfit.

She highlighted the impacts of their activities on the lands where government would have to spend huge sums of money to restore them, while urging the miners to also register their activities with the appropriate authorities as soon as possible.

Chief Executive of HATOF Foundation, Dr. Samuel Dotse said the  training workshop, which will run from February to March at basic, intermediate and advanced levels, is expected to build the capacities of civil society organisations in Ghana to help them develop high quality proposals for climate change projects.

He said the training will also increase their chances of accessing funding from the Green Climate Fund and other climate finance mechanisms.

Dr. Dotse stated that participants will also have an enhanced understanding of global climate change, adaptation and mitigation concepts, national climate change policies and initiatives.

Officials of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti region have assured residents that power supply has significantly improved following the repair of faulty cables that previously caused disruptions.

While acknowledging some challenges, including theft and tampering with ECG installations, the Public relations officer ( PRO ) for ECG Ashanti West, Benjamin Obeng Antwi, assured the public that his team is working tirelessly to enhance and maintain a stable power supply in the Ashanti region.

He also urged the public to support ECG in safeguarding its installations and reporting individuals who interfere with the company’s infrastructure.

“One of the problems that we faced had to do with the transformer that was vandalised at the Adum central business district.

“As we speak, we have rectified the problem and repaired the necessary equipment, and now our customers within that vicinity are enjoying a stable power supply.”

“But we would like to admonish the public to help us fight against the damage of ECG power installations, which include cables, transformers, and other equipment.

“This phenomenon is gaining daily momentum in the Ashanti region, and we want to call on all our stakeholders and the public to help curb this menace.”he urged

FABAG calls for removal of ‘excise tax’ on fruit juices

0

Rev. John Awuni

The Food and Beverages Association of Ghana (FABAG) has made a strong appeal to the government to remove the ‘excise tax on fruit juices, arguing that its imposition has severely affected the local industry and hindered economic growth.

In a press release dated February 16, 2025, Rev. John Awuni, the Executive Chairman of FABAG, called on the Minister of Finance and the government to address the issue in the upcoming budget.

The association believes that removing this tax, along with other “nuisance taxes,” would help stimulate domestic production and significantly increase revenue mobilization by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

“The introduction and imposition of the obnoxious EXCISE tax on sweetened and fruit drinks under Excise Duty (Amendments) Act 2023 (Act 1093) especially on locally produced fruit juices and sweetened beverages has had a devastating negative effect on local manufacturing with a multiplier effect on employment levels, sales turnover, working capital and international market competitiveness of Ghanaian fruit juices and sweetened beverage”, the statement said

According to FABAG, the local industry already faces a heavy tax burden, including Import Duty, VAT, Ecowas Levy, and multiple other taxes, making it difficult for manufacturers to survive.

This overwhelming tax load has led to retrenchment of workers, higher production costs, and an inability to compete with imported products.

The association stressed that reversing the Excise Tax would not only relieve the struggling sector but also promote growth and sustainability.

He argued that removing the tax could lead to increased sales, more jobs, and higher tax contributions, including PAYE, corporate taxes, and VAT.

FABAG alluded remained committed to supporting the government’s goals and hopes for a favorable decision in the first budget statement.

In conclusion, FABAG called on the government to show understanding of the current challenges facing the fruit juice manufacturing industry and act swiftly to reverse the excise tax for the sake of economic recovery and job creation.

“This urgent request from FABAG underscores the association’s dedication to ensuring that the domestic food and beverage industry thrives in the face of mounting challenges”.

The Excise Tax, introduced under the Excise Duty (Amendments) Act 2023 (Act 1093), it concluded has negatively impacted the production of locally made fruit juices and sweetened beverages, resulting in a drop in sales by more than 50%.

Joe Ghartey invited by NIB for questioning

Former Minister of Railway Development, Joe Ghartey Former Minister of Railway Development, Joe Ghartey

Former Minister of Railway Development, Joe Ghartey, has been invited by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) for questioning over the Ghana Sky Train project, according to a report by 3news.com.

The project was initiated in 2018 by the previous administration as a major infrastructure initiative to tackle traffic congestion, particularly in the Greater Accra Region.

Under the leadership of Joe Ghartey, Ghana signed a concession agreement with Africa Investment (Ai) Sky Train Consortium in 2019, with an estimated cost of $3 billion.

However, the project never took off, igniting concerns about its feasibility and financing.

In 2022, the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), a state entity, disclosed that it had invested $2 million in the project but had yet to see any returns.

The Auditor-General’s report also flagged this expenditure, sparking public conversation.

On Sunday, February 23, 2025, personnel from the NIB detained Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi at his residence on Sunday, as part of ongoing investigations into alleged financial impropriety at GIIF.

Although he was later released, his arrest ignited widespread debates, with many questioning the circumstances surrounding the project and the alleged misuse of funds.

I’ll support policy direction of free SHS – Nyarko Ampem

0

The Deputy Minister-Designate for Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, emphasizing that there are no plans to cancel the programme.

Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, February 24, 2025, the Asuogyaman MP said he will do everything in his power to assist the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, to secure adequate funding to support the implementation of the policy.

Nyarko Ampem further clarified that his concerns about Free SHS are not related to its funding but rather its implementation.

“There is no subtle intention to cancel Free SHS. I will support my minister to provide adequate funding for education. As to the outcome of the education forum, if Ghanaians by consensus agree on a particular direction, and it becomes government policy, I will support it in any way. But like I said, President Mahama gave Ghanaians the indication that he will not cancel free SHS and I know President Mahama is a man of his word,” he stated.

“If I have any concern about free SHS, it is not about the funding it is rather the implementation.”

The Deputy Minister-Designate’s remarks come in the wake of the ongoing National Education Forum being held nationwide.

The initiative, aimed at gathering views and ideas for the effective implementation of Ghanaian educational policies, was launched by President John Mahama on February 18, 2025.

The high cost of MTN sim cards has pestered Ghanaians to take to social media to complain.

This comes after Gh Page in a post questioned how much MTN sim cards are bought in Ghana.

Taking to the comment section of the post, Ghanaians expressed disappointment and anger at the high cost of MTN sim cards.

According to many people, the cost of MTN sim cards is between 120 and 150 Cedis in their respective areas.

Others also claim it is untrue, as they revealed that when one goes to the office, the sim card is sold between 15 and 20 Ghana Cedis.

Meanwhile, it was also uncovered via a comment that when one goes to the office to buy a sim card, they will be told the sim card is finished, hence, they have no option but to go and buy it outside which costs more.

Then again, MTN is yet to respond to the allegation leveled against them by Ghanaians.

Dr. Ayew didn’t contest for any position – Ashanti Parliamentary Caucus

Some of the members of the Ashanti NPP Caucus Some of the members of the Ashanti NPP Caucus

The Ashanti Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) has denied claims that the Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, suffered a heavy defeat in its leadership elections.

In a statement issued by its secretary, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, who is MP for Old Tafo, the Ashanti NPP Caucus refuted reports that the leadership election was biased in favour of Dr. Ayew Afriye.

The statement clarified that the Effiduase-Asokore legislator, who served as the middle-belt campaign coordinator for the NPP in the 2024 election, neither participated in the election nor campaigned for a position.

“Contrary to reports, the claim that Hon. Nana Ayew Afriye garnered only eight (8) votes is not only misleading but also factually inaccurate. The actual vote count does not reflect this assertion, and any attempt to portray such figures is a deliberate effort to misinform the public.

“It is entirely false to suggest that Hon. Nana Ayew Afriye was present at the election, campaigned, or solicited votes based on his affiliation with Dr. Bawumia. The reality is that he was not in attendance at the said meeting or election,” parts of the statement read.

The statement further emphasized, “More importantly, he had formally communicated to the Interim Management Committee ahead of the event that he was not interested in contesting for any leadership position. Any claims to the contrary are a complete fabrication aimed at misleading the public.”

The caucus reiterated its commitment to ensuring that its internal elections are conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner.

Only 1 Agenda 111 hospital was completed by Akufo-Addo

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and John Dramani Mahama Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government completed only one of the Agenda 111 projects it started.

According to Mahama, the one hospital the Akufo-Addo government managed to complete out of the about 100 hospitals it promised was empty, without even a single piece of furniture in it.

The president made these remarks while criticising the decision of the previous government to complete hospitals at places where there were existing mission hospitals.

He pointed out that rather than starting the construction of new health facilities, the Akufo-Addo administration should have collaborated with faith-based organisations to make their existing health facilities better.

“Unfortunately, that was not followed in Agenda 111. So, there are many places where you have a mission hospital. We could have used that money to upgrade the facilities in the mission hospital. Government has gone to start a hospital, has not been able to finish it, and they are sitting there, some at foundation level, some at lintel level, and so many of them – almost 90 hospitals. We need $1.7 billion to be able to complete the hospitals.

“The one that they said they commissioned, there’s nothing in it, just one hospital. They finished the structure, but there’s not even a bed in the hospital. And so, we discussed it a bit in Cabinet, but the Minister of Health is going to come with a paper to see what we do,” he said at a meeting with the Christian Council on Monday, February 24, 2025.

The president indicated that one of the solutions to completing the project will be for faith-based organisations to take up some of them.

He said that the missions can take some of the uncompleted Agenda 111 projects, complete them, and manage them.

“I believe that if some of the missions are interested, we could get them to finish the hospital and manage the hospital and provide the service… It will be a mix. We can also raise money and finish some, but the mission hospitals can take some and complete them and run the hospital,” he said.

About Agenda 111:

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo cut the sod for the construction of the facilities on August 17, 2021, with a promise to complete the work within 18 months.

The plan to construct the hospitals was first announced in the 8th COVID-19 national address, on April 26, 2020, by the president months after the Coronavirus pandemic hit Ghana.

It was initially “Agenda 88” but the government later revised it to “Agenda 111.” The 23 additional facilities included 13 more district hospitals.

The standard 100-bed facilities which will be in districts without hospitals will also have accommodation for staff.

Beneficiary regions and respective breakdown are Ashanti, 10; Volta, nine; Eastern, eight; Greater Accra, seven; Upper East, seven; Oti, five; Upper West, five; Bono, five; Western North, five; Savanna, three; Bono East, two; and North East, two.

The remaining are six regional hospitals in the newly-created regions, two specialised hospitals in the middle and northern belts, as well as a regional hospital in the Western Region and renovation of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital.

Petroleum industry players urged to be prudent in managing financial resources in their operations

0

Players in the petroleum industry have been advised to be prudent in the management of financial resources in their operations.

They must work hard to use minimum resources in the extraction process to avoid expending more money on their business operations.

Mr. Theophilus Nyarko Ahwireng, Chairperson and Managing Director of MODEC Production Service Ghana JV Ltd, explained that in undertaking such exercises, one must be prudent in spending.

“If one is careful, along the extraction value chain, from licensing, exploration, appraisal, development, production and decommissioning, it is possible at each of these stages to optimize financial resources and get the needed value.”

He was speaking at a public lecture organized by the College of Engineering at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Kumasi.

Mr Ahwireng argued that, managing the cost of petroleum was far more important than its discovery, adding that, without proper cost management, industries might witness the use of advanced technology in extracting oil offshore, but revenues that would be generated would merely cover operational expenses.

The lecture was under the theme “Capturing the Optimum Value of Petroleum Resources: Looking Beyond the Fiscal Elements.”

He stressed the need for countries to look beyond royalties, additional oil entitlements, taxes, and government participation, and build robust frameworks to fully harness these natural resources.

Nations must, therefore, conduct comprehensive review of their economic structure which was essential for identifying pathways to sustainability.

He cited countries such as Norway, Trinidad and Tobago and the West African Gas Pipeline Project from Nigeria, which had strategically managed resources to position their economies positively.

Mr Ahwireng said when Ghana took over from the Jubilee Oil Field, it had for more than a decade generated and supplied oil products for electricity worth several millions of dollars.

Again, petroleum-exploring countries must be disciplined; adhering to policies, legislation, guidelines, best practices, systems, and processes.

He stressed the need for clear mandates for state actors, emphasizing the importance of alignment among revenue managers, resource managers and policymakers.

There should be quality development solutions employed, optimization of activities along the petroleum value chain as well as the management of petroleum cost.

Mr Ahwireng believed this created significant value, greater than all revenues from the fiscal incentives.

Union Ghana beat College of Humanities 3-0 in opening game of UG Corporate Football League

The opening weekend of the league produced four goals The opening weekend of the league produced four goals

The University of Ghana Corporate Football League kicked off last Friday, February 21, at the University of Ghana Stadium with intensity, excitement, and an early statement from the defending champions, Union Ghana. With only four goals across four games, defences held firm, but one team refused to be contained.

The biggest highlight of the opening week was Union Ghana’s commanding 3-0 victory over the College of Humanities. The gala champions wasted no time in proving they are the team to beat, dismantling their opponents with clinical finishing and structured play.

From the blast of the whistle, the Union Ghana asserted dominance, showing no rust from their previous triumph. Three unanswered goals sent a clear message, they are here to defend their crown.

While Union Ghana dominated their game, the College of Health Sciences edged past Telecel Ghana with a 1-0 win, thanks to a decisive strike that separated the two sides. It was a match of tactical battles, but a moment of brilliance proved enough to secure all three points.

The other two fixtures of the day saw teams cancel each other out in tight battles. Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and Ghana Football Association (GFA) played out a goalless draw, while the College of Basic & Applied Sciences and College of Education also ended 0-0.

With just four goals in Week 1, attackers found it difficult to shine, but Union Ghana’s explosive start stands out.

Kenyan police officer killed confronting gang members in Haiti

Kenyan police officers arrived in Haiti in June to bolster Haiti's National Police Kenyan police officers arrived in Haiti in June to bolster Haiti’s National Police

A Kenyan police officer who was on patrol with the international security force in Haiti has been killed in a confrontation with gang members.

The officer is the first casualty suffered by the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support mission (MSS).

The force was sent to Haiti in June last year to help restore order to the country, where gangs have seized control of almost the entire capital, Port-au-Prince, as well as large swathes of rural areas.

More than 5,500 people were killed in gang-related violence in Haiti in 2024 and more than a million people have fled their homes.

The commander of the multinational force, Gen Godfrey Otunge, said the Kenyan police officer had been injured in Artibonite, a region north of the capital.

Gen Otunge said the officer, who has not been named, had been immediately airlifted to hospital, where he died a short while later.

Jack Ombaka, the spokesman for the MSS, said in a statement sent to Reuters news agency that the officer was a “fallen hero” who “was killed while fighting for the people of Haiti”, while Kenya’s foreign ministry said it was “heartbroken by the loss” of the officer.

Mr Ombaka said the officer had been shot by a gang member during a security operation in the town of Pont-Sondé.

He added that the multinational force would “pursue these gangs to the last man standing”.

The MSS was boosted earlier this month by the arrival of an additional 200 Kenyan police officers, but the force is outgunned and outmanned by the gangs, which continue to arm themselves with powerful weapons illegally smuggled from the US.

The future of the multinational force – which also has officers from Bahamas, Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala and Jamaica among its ranks – was thrown into doubt some weeks ago when the Trump administration ordered a freeze on foreign aid programmes.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio later approved a waiver for US funds destined for the MSS and Haiti’s National Police, but it is not yet clear whether the US government supports turning the MSS into a UN peacekeeping operation, which would make its funding more secure.

The NDC Government Wants To Destroy The Legacy Of The NPP’S Government_ Says Akwasi Gyamfi

0

Hon. Akwasi Gyamfi Onyina-Acheampong, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed concerns that the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government is trying to erase the achievements of the previous NPP administration. He believes that the NDC is focused on destroying the legacy of the NPP government .

This statement comes amidst the NDC’s efforts to address corruption, improve education, and create jobs. According to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, the NDC is committed to breaking free from the corruption and arrogance associated with the NPP government, and instead, usher in a new era of development and progress .

The NPP and NDC have been political rivals in Ghana, with differing ideologies and approaches to governance. The NPP has traditionally been associated with a more liberal economic policy, while the NDC has emphasized social welfare and state intervention in the economy.

*Key Issues:

– *Corruption: The NDC has accused the NPP of perpetuating corruption during their administration.

– *Economic Development: The NPP has been credited with implementing policies that promoted economic growth, but the NDC argues that these policies benefited only a few individuals.

– *Social Welfare: The NDC has emphasized the importance of social welfare programs, such as free education and healthcare, which they claim the NPP neglected.

The debate between the NPP and NDC is ongoing, with each side presenting their own narrative about the state of the country and the best way forward. Ultimately, it is up to the Ghanaian people to decide which party’s vision aligns with their own aspirations for the country’s future.

The Group commended President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to upholding competence and experience in key national appointments including Dr Asiamah, as he is expected to embark on his mandate to steer the BoG towards economic stability and growth”

Mr Daniel Agboka-Dzegede, the Executive Director of VDF, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Monday, said Dr Asiamah’s appointment was a perfect fit for resetting the BoG and the economy for prosperity and socio-economic development.

He eulogised Dr Asiamah’s track record as a seasoned economist and central banking expert making him the ideal choice to lead the BoG at this crucial moment saying “His wealth of experience, particularly in monetary policy formulation and financial sector stability is an asset that will guide Ghana’s economic recovery and ensure a resilient financial system”.

Walewale Curfew Heavy-Handed – MP

0

Dr. Abdul Kabiru Tiah Mahama

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Walewale, Dr. Abdul Kabiru Tiah Mahama, has strongly criticised the imposition of a curfew in his constituency, calling it a heavy-handed response to the recent security challenges the area has faced.

In a statement made in Parliament last Friday, the MP expressed deep concern over the rising violence and brutality from security personnel, which, he argues, has caused unnecessary suffering for innocent residents.

Dr. Mahama conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have tragically lost their lives in the violence that has plagued the constituency.

He noted that the people of Walewale and surrounding communities are living in constant fear, and he called for urgent action to restore peace and stability.

The MP emphasised the importance of making the right decisions to avoid further escalation of the situation, describing the current environment in Walewale as one of pain and uncertainty.

He pointed to the increasing criminal activity on the highway between Bolgatanga and Tamale, which passes through Walewale, as a key contributor to the unrest.

According to Dr. Mahama, the lack of a decisive response to these attacks has emboldened criminals, leading to more violence and fatalities.

He again pointed to a pattern of attacks on both the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakom Road and the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale Road, urging the government to take swift action to prevent further bloodshed.

He said the recent unrest in Walewale began on January 14, 2025, when a stationary vehicle caught fire, triggering a violent response from the military.

Dr. Mahama criticised the military for their actions, which involved indiscriminately beating several civilians, including those peacefully sitting at a local National Democratic Congress (NDC) base.

While the military later issued an apology for the incident, Dr. Mahama warned that such encroachments into civilian spaces are dangerous and could escalate further if not properly addressed.

The MP also recounted the series of reprisal attacks that have taken place in the area in recent weeks.

On February 10, 2025, he indicated that a vehicle was set ablaze in Wulugu, followed by further attacks in Walewale on February 12 and 14.

In response, the military allegedly beat up anyone they encountered, including innocent residents from Kukua, Loagri, Walewale, Gbimsi, and Wulugu.

He said tragically, one person lost his life in the attacks, and two journalists were also assaulted.

Dr. Mahama condemned the military’s actions, describing them as equally reprehensible as the criminal attacks on travellers, and called for an investigation into the actions of the security forces.

The MP called for a full-scale investigation into the deaths and brutality committed by security forces in the past two weeks.

He emphasised that such an inquiry is necessary to bring justice to the victims and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.

While the police are already investigating the murders of innocent travellers along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale Road, Dr. Mahama urged Parliament to ensure that a thorough investigation is conducted into the actions of the military.

On the curfew imposed on Walewale and its surrounding areas, Dr. Mahama argued that this decision was heavy-handed and unwarranted.

He pointed out that Walewale is a relatively peaceful community, and the curfew punishes innocent residents who are already victims of the violence.

The MP noted that most of the attacks on the highway take place during the daytime, outside the curfew hours, rendering the measure ineffective.

Dr. Mahama appealed for the review and lifting of the curfew, calling for the return of normalcy to Walewale.

He emphasised that this issue transcends politics and tribal divisions, urging all stakeholders to come together to address the security challenges in a way that promotes peace and justice for all.

President John Dramani Mahama (L) and Iddrisu Musah Superior President John Dramani Mahama (L) and Iddrisu Musah Superior

A stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, Iddrisu Musah Superior, has called for the immediate removal of all the taxes President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) promised to scrap during the electioneering campaign.

In a statement on Monday, February 24, 2025, he insisted that the COVID-19 Levy, and the Betting Tax must be eliminated without delay.

“Betting Tax, COVID Levy and all the taxes Mahama and the NDC promised to scrap must go!” he stated.

Expressing his concerns, Musah Superior accused some pro-NDC groups of pretending to be financial experts while advocating for the retention of these taxes.

“We are aware that of some pro NDC, individuals and groups masquerading as finance experts, advocating that, some of the existing taxes must not be scrapped,” he noted.

He warned that any attempt to renege on the NDC’s manifesto commitments would be met with strong resistance.

“We are not some Paleolithic humans to be whipped into accepting this flapdoodle,” he declared, stressing that the public would not be deceived into accepting excuses for maintaining the taxes.

He further criticised what he described as a hesitant and indecisive approach to governance, pledging to remain vigilant.

Musah Superior also assured that he and others would closely monitor the administration’s actions, ensuring that John Dramani Mahama and the NDC fulfill their promises to Ghanaians.

“We will continue to keep watch on developments in this dithering government and hold he feet of the president to the fire,” he added.

In the run-up to the 2024 Election, John Mahama reiterated his vow to abolish both the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) and the tax on betting winnings if elected.

He criticised the E-Levy for not meeting its revenue targets and for imposing unnecessary financial strain on citizens.

NCCE Director commends ‘one million coders’ initiative

National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE)

Emmanuel Hinneh, the Dormaa East District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Bono Region, has lauded the government’s ‘one million coder’s programme’, calling for the implementation of the policy.

Describing the concept of the programme as appropriate, he said the implementation of the coding policy would build and equip youth with the relevant digital skills and enlighten them on technology.

That has the potential to create thousands of jobs for the youth. In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Wamfie, Hinneh urged the government to partner with the private sector, saying as an engine of growth effective public-private partnership would not only spur economic development but also create job opportunities for the youth.

Hinneh said there were numerous job opportunities in the private sector, urging the youth to concentrate on those areas rather than relying on the government for employment.

He also urged the youth to identify and build on their talents, asking religious bodies to help the youth in that direction, saying religious bodies could do that by offering professional and career counselling for them.

Hinneh expressed worry about the inaccessibility of financial support for the youth to engage in entrepreneurship and called on financial institutions to help those interested in engaging in small and medium enterprises.

‘I’m always ready’ – Laryea Kingston eyes senior national team role

Laryea Kingston is the former coach of the Black Starlets Laryea Kingston is the former coach of the Black Starlets

Former Ghana U17 coach Laryea Kingston has expressed his desire to return to the national team setup, revealing that he is ready to embrace a new challenge with the senior side.

Reflecting on his journey and the current state of Ghanaian football, Kingston shared his thoughts on the nation’s passion for the sport, its ongoing struggles, and his deep-seated desire to contribute to the country’s football development.

Kingston, who led the Black Starlets since October 2023, stepped down after Ghana failed to qualify for the U-17 AFCON competition for the third consecutive time in May 2024, citing external influence and a lack of fulfilment as some of the reasons for his departure.

Despite this setback, he still dreams of a return to coaching any of the national teams, a sentiment he shared with JoySports during an interview.

“For me, I’m Ghanaian, and even today, whether at the FA or in Ghana, I believe I can still contribute to Ghanaian soccer. That is something close to my heart, a goal I want to achieve. If I receive a call to come back and continue where I left off, why not?” he remarked.

Kingston also revealed his aspiration to move from coaching youth teams to leading the senior national team, noting that his accumulated experience now equips him to manage a first-team environment.

“I feel ready to reach the top with the senior national team. My strengths have evolved from development to management. I understand how to manage both individual players and the group as a whole. If given the opportunity, I’m ready. Even today, if I receive a call to support any of the national teams, I’m more than willing to return because that’s what I want to do,” he added.

During his tenure with the Black Starlets, Kingston oversaw 17 matches, winning 12, drawing 3, and suffering 2 losses. Under his leadership, the team scored 54 goals and conceded 15.

US star John Legend defends playing Rwanda concert during war

0

American singer-songwriter John Legend has told the BBC he is unfazed by a public backlash against his decision to perform in Rwanda, despite the country’s involvement in the war in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.

“I don’t believe that we should punish the people of Rwanda and punish the people of other countries when we disagree with their leaders,” he said after last week’s concert in Kigali.

In recent weeks, M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, have seized the two largest cities in the mineral-rich east of the DR Congo.

There is evidence Rwanda has sent 4,000 troops across the border to support the rebels.

Hundreds of thousands of civilians are now destitute having fled their homes, and shocking violence, including the rape of children, has skyrocketed.

Critics argue that Legend could have made a powerful statement by pulling out of the concert, especially given his highly respected “EGOT” status as someone who has won the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards.

Fellow Grammy-winner Tems did pull out of last week’s concert in Rwanda, saying she would “never, ever intend to be insensitive to real-world issues”.

But Legend defended his decision to headline the Move Afrika event in Kigali, which was run by the Global Citizen NGO and attracted thousands of fans from across the continent.

He said he was not being paid for the performance but felt it was his duty to help “grow touring capabilities” on the African continent, which is often overlooked by international stars on so-called world tours.

“I’m aware of what’s happening [in DR Congo] and I’m aware of the calls there have been for me to not do this show, but I really believe that the mission of Move Afrika is still important,” he told the BBC.

Delighted fans at the sold-out show agreed, but the social media backlash was ferocious enough to force Legend to delete an Instagram post he had made promoting the event.

Belgium-based activist Denise Zanesa had argued that “performing under the banner” of Rwanda “would be akin to collaborating with oppression itself”, in a message posted to X (formerly Twitter).

It was a sentiment echoed by others, including Simone Umba in the US, who wrote in a TikTok video caption: “So are we ready to talk about Rwanda’s use of Black American culture in their soft campaigning to normalise their terrorising of eastern Congo?”

Taking a political stance would have been nothing new for the star.

Legend is outspoken in his criticism of US President Donald Trump. He also severed ties with former mentor Kanye West when he ran for president, suspecting it was part of a wider Trump campaign to “siphon” black people’s votes away from the Democrats.

The debate over Rwanda’s relationship with popular global figures is also not new.

Most recently, Rwanda has been accused of “sportswashing” – with critics saying it uses the feel-good factor of international football to cover up alleged human rights abuses at home.

The East African nation is said to receive $1bn (£800m) a year in foreign aid and its tourism arm – Visit Rwanda – has lucrative sponsorship deals with Arsenal in England, Bayern Munich in Germany and Paris St-Germain in France.

When asked his thoughts on the topic, Legend’s aide told the BBC that he would not answer that question.

It appears that, as far as Legend and his team are concerned, his music itself should do the talking.

Did They Fail Their Courses? Peeps Quiz As Afia Schwar’s Twin Sons Fail To Appear At Their Graduation

0

Some Ghanaians have lambasted Controversial loudmouth media personality, Afia Schwarzenegger for staying quiet over the graduation of her twin sons.

Afia is known for flaunting the achievements of her twin sons, John Irving and James Ian Geiling Heerdegen, on social media, especially during their academic milestones.

A few years ago, she she celebrated their admission into the University of Ghana, Legon, expressing gratitude and sharing their achievement with her followers. She even shaded her haters that she has been able to single-handedly take care of her kids.

However, recent events have sparked curiosity among fans and followers. Despite the news of her twin sons’ colleagues graduating, there has been a noticeable absence of celebratory posts from Afia Schwarzenegger.

This silence has led to speculation, with some questioning whether the twins successfully completed their courses.

Adding to the intrigue, the twins were conspicuously absent from the graduation ceremony, further fuelling the rumours of their academic failure. Given Afia’s history of publicly celebrating her sons’ achievements, this uncharacteristic silence has left many wondering about the reasons behind it.

Recall that a few years ago, Afia Schwarzenegger gifted her twin sons a luxurious house following their graduation from high school.

As of now, neither Afia Schwarzenegger nor her sons have addressed the circulating rumours.

Asante Akyem North MP Fires Fatima Abubakar’s For Saying It’s Bad To Use Twi Language In Parliament

0

Accra – The ongoing debate over the use of English in Ghana’s Parliament has taken a new twist, with O. K. Frimpong, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, strongly reacting to comments made by former Information Minister Fatima Abubakar.

In a recent interview with TV3, Abubakar had stated that a significant number of majority MPs are struggling to communicate effectively in English during parliamentary proceedings. Her remarks have sparked both support and backlash, particularly from lawmakers and the public.

Speaking on the issue, Hon. O. K. Frimpong expressed disappointment at the former minister’s comments, calling them “unfortunate.” He emphasized that the MPs, including those in the majority, are well-versed in English and had, in fact, campaigned in the language during their political journeys.

“What the former Information Minister said about some majority MPs struggling to speak English in Parliament is very unfortunate,” Frimpong said. “Before we became parliamentarians, we had campaigned on very platforms, TV and radio stations using the English language. So, what is she talking about? We can speak the English language very well, but we should be proud of our own language. Besides, English is our colonial master’s language.”

Frimpong’s comments highlight a broader cultural and political conversation that has been brewing among some Ghanaians. While many agree that MPs should be proficient in English, there is also a growing sentiment that Ghanaian languages deserve more recognition and should be integrated into the country’s official discourse.

The debate is far from one-sided. After Frimpong’s response, many Ghanaians weighed in, some agreeing with him. “It’s about time we use our own language in Parliament,” said one social media user. Another added, “Our own languages have value too, and it’s time we stop hiding behind English.”

On the other side, critics argue that English, being the official language of Ghana, remains essential for formal and legal matters in Parliament. “Whether English is a colonial language or not, it’s the language of communication in Ghana,” said one commentator.

As the debate continues to unfold, it is clear that the role of English versus local languages in Ghana’s Parliament will remain a hot topic for the foreseeable future. Will MPs embrace a more bilingual approach, or will English continue to dominate the chamber? Only time will tell.

Odorgonor SHS students protest malfunctioning street lights

0

Students of Odorgonor Senior High School in Accra took to the streets on Monday, February 24, to protest faulty traffic lights and streetlights near their school, citing safety concerns.

The students lament that the malfunctioning signals have already led to the death of staff, and they fear more lives could be at risk if urgent action is not taken.

Their demonstration briefly disrupted traffic along the stretch.

According to the students, vehicles speed past the school’s entrance due to the non-functional traffic lights, resulting in multiple near-miss accidents.

Some of the protesting students called on authorities to act swiftly to prevent further casualties.

“Our security man has died because there’s no traffic light here. We call on the government to swiftly intervene.”
