Ghanaian movie producers have taken audiences for granted

0

James Gardiner is the Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority James Gardiner is the Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority

Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority, James Gardiner, has stated that the Ghanaian movie industry is struggling because producers have grown too comfortable and taken audiences for granted.

In an interview on Peace FM, James Gardiner explained that many producers assume that once a movie is made and released in cinemas, people would automatically show up to watch.

‘I don’t mind dating older women, if there’s genuine connection’ – James Gardiner

He noted that this assumption ignores the fact that audiences spend their hard-earned money on tickets, and therefore expect value for what they pay for.

According to Gardiner, a lot of the movies screened in cinemas tend to look similar, while others lack proper storytelling and direction. This, he explained, has led to dwindling interest in Ghanaian movies among the Ghanaian audiences.

“There’s a big problem in the industry. We must acknowledge that we have taken the audience for granted. We assumed that any movie produced and released in cinemas would attract viewers. We did not pay enough attention to the fact that people spend their hard-earned money to watch these Ghanaian films, especially since most of the stories are repetitive and you cannot see the direction the movie is taking. Because of that, the audience’s interest would decrease and that is where we have gotten to,” he said.

‘We don’t have support; it’s a big issue’ – James Gardiner on Ghana’s struggling film industry

Beyond storytelling, James Gardiner also mentioned that another challenge facing filmmakers is the lack of proper distribution channels after movies are produced.

He explained that getting movies onto platforms like Netflix is not straightforward, as negotiations often depend on how strong a movie’s streaming power is in its home country.

“Currently, a major problem is the lack of distribution platforms for these films. Regarding online platforms like Netflix, the ability to negotiate with them largely depends on one’s streaming power within their home country. In Ghana, with a population of about 35 million, only a small fraction is digitally savvy,” he explained.

Obama comments on dismissal of Ghanaian-American journalist by Washington Post

Former President Obama has condemned the dismissal of Karen Attiah Former President Obama has condemned the dismissal of Karen Attiah

Former United States President Barack Obama has weighed in on the controversial dismissal of Ghanaian-American journalist Karen Attiah from The Washington Post.

In a post on X on Friday, September 19, 2025, Obama called the dismissal a troubling example of free speech suppression under the Trump administration.

“After years of complaining about cancel culture, the current administration has taken it to a new and dangerous level by routinely threatening regulatory action against media companies unless they muzzle or fire reporters and commentators it doesn’t like.

“This is precisely the kind of government coercion that the First Amendment was designed to prevent — and media companies need to start standing up rather than capitulating to it,” he wrote.

Ghanaian-American journalist fired over Charlie Kirk social media post

Karen Attiah, a prominent columnist and the last remaining full-time Black opinion writer at the Post, was sacked on September 15, 2025, following social media posts addressing political violence, race, and gun control in the wake of conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination on September 10, 2025.

Attiah claimed her dismissal was a result of her quoting Kirk’s 2023 remark questioning the “brain processing power” of prominent Black women, including Michelle Obama, which the Washington Post deemed “unacceptable” and a safety risk to staff.

The Ghanaian-American, born to Ghanaian parents, had a distinguished career at the Post since 2014, notably as the founding editor of its Global Opinions section after the 2018 murder of colleague Jamal Khashoggi.

Attiah, who labeled the Post’s accusations as baseless, has received support from the Washington Post Guild, which called her dismissal “unjust” and a violation of free speech.

Conservative voices, however, have accused her of misrepresenting Kirk’s statements, a charge she denies, insisting her posts condemned violence across the board.

Botswana made history by winning the 4x400m relay final at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, on September 21, 2025.

They edged out strong competition from the United States and South Africa to become the first African country to claim gold in the event.

In challenging conditions, with heavy rain pouring down at the Japan National Stadium, the U.S., who had secured their place in the final after a run-off victory over Kenya, led the race at the final baton exchange.

However, Collen Kebinatshipi, the 21-year-old winner of the individual title, ran a phenomenal anchor leg to snatch gold in a time of 2:57.76.

Botswana finished with 2:57.76 to claim gold, the US followed with 2:57.83 to take silver, while South Africa also clocked 2:57.83 to secure the bronze medal.

South Africa police uncover $20m crystal meth lab

The police had been acting on a tip-off after an informant reported of a strange chemical smell The police had been acting on a tip-off after an informant reported of a strange chemical smell

South African police say they have dismantled a crystal methamphetamine laboratory, with drugs worth $20m (£15m), discovered on a farm in the east of the country.

Five people “from a North American country” have been arrested, while two others “believed to be from West African countries” fled the scene, a statement said.

Police photographs show industrial manufacturing equipment along with weighing scales and lunch boxes filled with the illegal drug.

In a 2022 Global State of Harm Reduction report, South Africa was described as one of the largest crystal meth consumer markets in the world. Its geography and “porous borders” make it an ideal transit point for illicit drugs, the UN says.

In Friday’s raid on the farm in Volksrust, 225km (140 miles) south-west of Johannesburg, the police also seized a pellet gun loaded with blanks.

The farm caretaker, who has also been arrested, was found with three live rounds.

The police had been acting on a tip-off with the informant reporting “a strange chemical smell emanating from the premises [of the farm], which raised suspicions of illicit drug manufacturing”.

“We applaud the community members who continue to work with police and provide valuable tip-offs. Intelligence-driven operations are ongoing, and we, as police, will stop at nothing in our quest to collapse the illicit drug trade,” Mpumalanga acting commissioner Maj-Gen Zeph Mkhwanazi said.

Last year, a similar discovery on a remote farm in another part of the country led to the arrest of two Mexicans and two South Africans.

Singer d4vd cancels US, Europe tours amid investigation into teen’s death

0

The United States singer David Anthony Burke, known by his stage name d4vd, appears to have cancelled the remaining stops on his US and European tours amid the growing fallout from an investigation into a decomposing body of a missing teenager found in the boot of a car.

Ticketmaster, which issues tickets for artists worldwide, said: “There are no upcoming concerts in United States” for the artist, and his October tour in Europe was cancelled on Sunday.

D4vd, whose popularity initially grew on TikTok, has built a large following in recent years and is known for his melancholic and genre-blending music, drawing influences from indie, R&B and rock music.

Celeste Rivas Hernandez, 15, went missing last year, and her body was found in a Tesla that US media outlets said was registered to the singer. However, police have not said the car belonged to him.

His representatives did not respond to requests by The Associated Press news agency for comment.

The remains were found in the front boot of the car impounded at a tow yard in Hollywood, California, on September 8 after police were alerted to a strong odour coming from it.

On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Police Department said the remains were Rivas’s. She was from Lake Elsinore, California, outside Los Angeles and was believed to have been last seen in April 2024, according to a missing person flyer seen by US broadcaster CBS.

“She appears to have been deceased inside the vehicle for an extended period of time before being found,” the Los Angeles medical examiner’s office said.

Police searched a house in Hollywood Hills where Burke had been staying on Thursday, broadcaster ABC reported.

Police have not made a statement on the cause of her death or the singer’s connection, if any, with Rivas. The Los Angeles Times, quoting unnamed sources, reported that police were trying to piece together Rivas’s movements before her body was found and establish if there was a connection between them. Police have said Burke has been cooperating with their investigation.

Burke, 20, performed at Chicago’s Salt Shed just two days before Rivas’s body was found as part of his Withered tour to promote his debut album.

His upcoming scheduled performances in Los Angeles and San Francisco will not go ahead, however. His concerts in Europe, which would have seen him make about a dozen appearances beginning in Norway, also appeared as cancelled on Ticketmaster.

Later shows in Australia in November still appeared available for purchase.

The story, which has been in the headlines over the past few weeks across the US, has led to a surge in interest in his music. His 2022 song Romantic Homicide climbed to 29th on Spotify’s global list of the 50 most streamed songs.

The moment Moliy felt uncomfortable after DJ said she speaks ‘too proper’ to be Ghanaian

0

Moliy is a Ghanaian musician Moliy is a Ghanaian musician

Ghanaian singer Moliy told American-based media personality DJ Norie during an interview that his comments about her accent and the way she speaks English made her feel uncomfortable.

The conversation started off light, with DJ Norie complimenting Moliy’s voice, saying she sounded good and that he couldn’t detect a Ghanaian accent in her speech.

I have always been hesitant to be on a record label – Moliy

At first, Moliy thought he was simply complimenting how clear her voice was. However, the conversation took a turn that appeared to make the singer uneasy.

Moliy jokingly explained that the accent she was using during the interview wasn’t her natural one and said DJ Norie would have to meet her in Ghana to hear her “real” accent.

She added that English had always been her favorite subject in school, which might explain why she speaks it so comfortably.

However, DJ Noriee went further, telling her that she speaks more “proper” than even he did. What unsettled Moliy most was when he told her she did not sound like someone from a third-world country.

Moliy makes Ghana proud with show-stopping performance at BET Awards pre-show

That comment changed the mood of the Ghanaian singer.

She mentioned she did not like how the conversation was sounding and questioned whether he was suggesting that people from Ghana do not speak English well.

Moliy later explained that, while DJ Noriee may have intended his words as praise, the way he phrased them felt backhanded.

According to her, it came across as if he did not expect someone from Ghana to sound polished or articulate.

The conversation unfolded as follows:

DJ Noriee: “You know you speak English very well.”

DJ Noriee: “I don’t hear no Ghanaian in you.

Moliy: “And are you trying to say Ghanaians don’t speak good English?

DJ Noriee: “I got best friends of Ghanaians. You know, what I’m saying? Like, you have no Ghanaian like accent. Why?”

Moliy: “It’s fake. You should meet me in Ghana. Meet me in Ghana. You can hear the real Moliy actually. So I’ll see you there.”

DJ Noriee: “It’s just like clearly you speak more proper than me. I don’t know.”

Moliy: “English was actually my favourite subject.”

DJ Noriee: “Let me Google you. I’m not getting Nigerian. It might say something like you’re from Texas or something. Let me see. Let me see exactly where you’re from. You definitely sound clear. Ain’t nothing about you sounds anything from any any third world country or anything. So just stick a pin in that one.”

Moliy: “I don’t like how this is sounding.”

DJ Noriee: “I just like you sound proper. That’s all I’m saying. I’m just saying you sound very proper.”

Moliy: “I get that it’s a compliment, but it feels backhanded.

DJ Noriee: “Why does it feel backhanded?

Moliy: “Because it’s like, it’s almost like you’re saying, I don’t expect you to sound like this because you’re from Ghana.”

DJ Noriee: “Like I said to you a while ago, my love, all of my Ghanaian friends have a little, a little bit we can hear it. Forget it.”

CMB market protest escalates over land dispute CMB market protest escalates over land dispute

One of the leaseholders of the CMB Abuja Market lands, Original Embossment has rejected claims that private developers are unlawfully attempting to seize the property, insisting that its 50-year lease is legitimate and backed by state authorities.

This comes on the back of protests by the traders and transport unions accusing developers of encroaching on the market.

These traders further petitioned the presidency over what they describe as a clear case of the rich displacing the poor.

In a statement issued by the company and sighted by GhanaWeb Business, Original Embossment stressed that the land belongs to the state through the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA), under the Ministry of Transport, and has been lawfully leased to multiple entities.

The company cited parliamentary records from July 1, 2021, which listed 10 active leaseholders, including the Ghana Cocoa Board, National Investment Bank, and others, dismissing claims that the land had been leased to only one firm for residential development.

Management further revealed that traders who initially reported the matter to police failed to produce ownership documents during investigations, while the company presented verifiable state-issued leases.

Who owns CMB Abuja market land? – Zanetor questions

“If they truly had a legitimate claim to the land, why would they walk away from due process rather than prove their case before the police and courts?” it asked.

Original Embossment in the statement said it has extended goodwill to affected traders by offering ultramodern shops upon completion of development but warned against attempts to twist this gesture into a false narrative.

The moment Moliy felt uncomfortable after DJ said she speaks ‘too proper’ to be Ghanaian

Forget it.”

Murdered Kenyan’s friends want UK soldier to face justice

0

More than a decade after Agnes Wanjiru, a 21-year-old mother, was killed in Kenya, allegedly by a British soldier, a Kenyan court has issued an arrest warrant for a UK national. If there is an extradition, it would be the first time a serving or former British soldier is sent abroad to face trial for the murder of a civilian – a move her friends would welcome.

On the night she went missing on 31 March 2012, Agnes begged her childhood friends Friend A and Friend B to come out with her.

Agnes and Friend A were both new mothers, both 21 years old, both wanting to let off some steam.

Friend B was eager to go out too, and agreed to meet them at the bar at Lions Court Hotel – located in the business district of Nanyuki, a market town in central Kenya, around 124 miles (200km) north of Nairobi.

That evening, Friend B’s mother agreed to watch over Agnes’s five-month-old daughter for a small babysitting fee. With childcare settled, Agnes and Friend A set off, making their first stop at a bar called Sherlock’s.

“There were a lot of muzungu (white) men there,” says Friend A. “I remember some were in plain clothes and some were in army clothes.”

The British Army has a permanent training support base in Nanyuki, and white men, many of them soldiers, were a familiar presence. Locals referred to them as Johnnies, a nickname that carries unsavoury connotations.

“They made me uncomfortable because I’d heard bad things about muzungu men,” Friend A recalls.

“Muzungus don’t treat us Kenyan women well,” adds Friend B. “Johnnies, especially, mistreat us. They disrespect us.”

For young women like Agnes, the risks of engaging with these men were often weighed against the struggle to make ends meet.

“When women are financially desperate, they will do almost anything to survive,” Friend A says. “I don’t believe Agnes was a sex worker, though. I never saw her do that. She was very poor.”

Her friends say that on a good day, Agnes would earn around 300 Kenyan shillings – less than £1 ($1.35). On a bad day, there was nothing at all, and she relied on the goodwill of her loving elder sister.

Agnes did not have any financial support from the father of her child, and her friends say she was constantly trying to earn money, mostly working in salons and braiding people’s hair, at times turning to more unconventional means.

One method, Friend A recalls, was simple: Agnes would befriend someone who offered to buy her a drink, then quietly ask the bartender to skip the drink and hand her the cash instead.

At Sherlock’s bar that night, Friend A was scrolling through Facebook when she noticed Agnes in what appeared to be a tense exchange with a white man.

“When I approached her to ask her if she was OK, she told me to go to Lions Court as planned and that she would join me shortly.”

Friend A continued to the hotel, where Friend B and several others were already dancing. A crowd of white men was also present.

Agnes joined them a little while afterwards.

She told her friends she had “cheekily” tried to take a muzungu’s wallet, but a bouncer had intervened. The matter seemed resolved, her friends say. And to her friends, Agnes seemed relaxed.

“She was in high spirits,” says Friend A. “She was joking around.”

At around midnight, Friend A left for home, leaving Friend B and Agnes and their friends dancing.

“The muzungus were buying us drinks, and Agnes was returning them to the bar in exchange for money,” Friend B adds. The two started mingling with other friends. A little while later, Friend B says she saw Agnes leave the bar with one of the white men and assumed that they had come to a consensual arrangement. Other reports say that Agnes was seen leaving with two men.

The next morning, Friend B went to Agnes’s house and saw her worried sister, who told her that Agnes had not returned. She rushed to her own mother’s house, where she found Agnes’s baby still in her care.

By early evening, when Agnes had still not returned, Friend B and another friend went to Nanyuki police station to report her missing, and return the baby to Agnes’s sister.

For days, Agnes’s friends searched for her. At Lions Court, a watchman told them there had been “a big fight” in one of the hotel rooms that weekend and a window had been broken.

Nearly three months later, Agnes’s body was discovered in a septic tank near the hotel. She had been stabbed. Friend B and another friend went to the mortuary to see Agnes’s body.

“I felt terrible,” Friend B says. “I couldn’t imagine something like this could happen.”

It would take years before Agnes Wanjiru’s murder drew wider attention.

Kenyan judge Njeri Thuku concluded after an inquest in 2019 that Agnes had been murdered by one or two British soldiers. The Sunday Times exclusively revealed that Agnes’s killing, allegedly by a British soldier, was well-known amongst the troops in Nanyuki. The publication reported that the soldier was struck off by the army but continues to live freely in the UK.

“I believe that there are many men responsible for Agnes’s death,” Friend A says. “Many men know what happened, and many have covered it up.”

Momentum built again in 2024 when Open Democracy reported that the British Army had failed to discipline soldiers for paying for sex despite such conduct being explicitly banned in 2022, following the allegations involving UK troops in Kenya.

This prompted an internal investigation in August 2025, which revealed that some soldiers at the base were still engaging in transactional sex with women, many of whom were vulnerable, coerced, or trafficked into sex work.

In April this year, UK Defence Secretary John Healey met Agnes’s family in Kenya to offer his condolences and issue a statement saying the British government “will continue to do everything we can to help the family secure the justice they deserve”.

On 16 September, a Kenyan High Court issued an arrest warrant for a British national suspected of murdering Agnes Wanjiru.

If extradited, it would be the first time a serving or former British soldier is sent abroad to stand trial for the killing of a civilian.

“It is highly welcome and a positive step towards the arch of justice,” says Kelvin Kubai, a lawyer at the African Centre for Corrective and Preventive Action. “However, the battle isn’t yet won, given the legal hurdles of extradition proceedings, and we hope the relevant government institutions of both states shall continue cooperating to meet the ends of justice.”

Agnes’s niece, Esther Njoki, has created a GoFundMe page in order to raise money to support the family, travel to the UK and create more awareness about the murder of her aunt.

“We need to push for financial security for Agnes’s daughter,” Esther says, adding that she is now a teenager.

And Agnes’s friends agree that justice has been delayed too long.

“The British Army cannot keep ignoring the murder of our friend,” Friend A says. “We want justice for Agnes and her daughter.”

A spokesman told the BBC that the UK remained “absolutely committed to helping them secure justice”.

“This is subject to ongoing legal proceedings and we will not comment further at this stage,” the spokesman said.

Upper West TEWU Joins Nationwide Strike

0

Tewu

The Upper West Regional branch of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) has declared an indefinite strike, joining a nationwide action over poor conditions of service for non-teaching staff in Ghana’s education sector.

Samuel K. Berko, Regional Senior Industrial Relations Officer for TEWU in the Upper West, announced at a press conference in Wa that members are fully participating in the industrial action that began on September 19, 2025.

Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) in Ghana has declared an indefinite nationwide strike from September 19, 2025, over stalled conditions of service, delayed promotions, and pay disparities, affecting the academic calendar across affected institutions.

The strike encompasses all non-teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES), public and technical universities, the Ghana Library Authority, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board. Berko confirmed that members in the region are fully participating in the industrial action, which began on Friday, September 19, 2025.

Berko apologized for the short notice given to the media, explaining that similar press conferences were being held across all regions to announce the same decision. He was accompanied by key regional officers including the regional chairman, finance committee chair, youth secretary, and other council members.

Reading a statement from the TEWU General Secretary, Berko said non-teaching staff have faced years of neglect despite their critical role in the education system. The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) says it has endured for too long the unfair treatment and disregard for its members by the government in signing their Conditions of Service.

The union is demanding the immediate signing of Conditions of Service for all non-teaching staff across affected institutions, and the inclusion of non-teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service in the Continuous Professional Development Allowance scheduled to be paid in September.

TEWU also wants all non-teaching staff of GES included in the payment of the Continuous Professional Development Allowance (CPDA) starting from September 2025. The union is demanding the immediate signing of conditions of service for its members and all junior staff in universities, as well as the inclusion of non-teaching staff of the GES in the payment of the Continuous Professional Development Allowance (CPDA) starting September 2025.

Additional demands include payment of outstanding weekend and overtime allowances owed to security and catering personnel, and resolution of long-standing promotion grievances affecting non-teaching staff in GES. Many staff members have reportedly stagnated in their ranks despite meeting requirements for promotion, affecting morale and productivity.

Berko emphasized that the strike targets what he described as an unfair system undermining the dignity and rights of TEWU members, not students or parents. He called on the government, particularly the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, to urgently resolve the outstanding issues.

The industrial action has spread nationwide, with The Volta and Oti Regions Chapter of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of TUC (Ghana) has joined in the nationwide strike action in demand for improved working conditions for non-teaching staff.

Members of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) in Kadjebi have also joined the nationwide indefinite strike, demonstrating the widespread nature of the industrial action.

The strike affects multiple educational institutions across Ghana, including public universities, technical universities, and basic education schools under GES. Non-teaching staff include administrative personnel, security guards, cleaners, librarians, laboratory technicians, and other support staff essential to educational operations.

Berko urged all TEWU members in the Upper West Region to stay home in solidarity until further notice, warning that their patience should not be mistaken for weakness. The union maintains that its members have been sidelined in welfare benefits and conditions of service guaranteed under Ghana’s Labour Act.

The nationwide strike represents one of the largest industrial actions by educational workers in recent years, potentially disrupting academic activities across Ghana’s educational institutions. TEWU’s demands focus on equitable treatment for non-teaching staff who provide essential support services in the education sector.

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and relevant government agencies face pressure to address the union’s concerns to restore normalcy to affected educational institutions nationwide.

Otumfuo is the most powerful king in Africa – Nana Aba Anamoah declares

Nana Aba Anamoah has hailed Otumfuo's authority Nana Aba Anamoah has hailed Otumfuo’s authority

Outspoken media personality Nana Aba Anamoah has established that the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is the most powerful king on the African continent.

According to her, the Ashanti Kingdom holds greater prestige and authority than any other in Africa, particularly because its celebrations bring together people from diverse backgrounds.

The television personality dismissed criticisms from some individuals on social media who sought to undermine the authority of the Asantehene, stressing that he has no equal, neither in Ghana nor across the continent.

Meaning behind Otumfuo’s sacred porcupine crown worn at Asantehemaa’s funeral

“It’s the way every celebration from the kingdom unites Ghana. People come from all walks of life, it speaks to the unity of this country and the immense power the Ashanti king wields. I see people saying all sorts of things about the Asantehene, masa, sit down!

“He is the Ashanti king. There is none like him in Africa. He is the most powerful king in Africa, and we have to respect and revere the Ashantis and this celebration,” she said in Twi while speaking on United Showbiz, aired on UTV on September 20, 2025.

Nana Aba went on to commend the organisers of the ‘Do Te Yie’ funeral for the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, for the orderliness of the event.

She also praised the global display of Ashanti culture, describing it as exceptional.

“This funeral, you don’t have to be an Ashanti to admire what is happening there. I’m a Fante, but you cannot take away the culture, history, tradition, and authority of the Ashanti Kingdom. It compares to none,” she added.

In a Facebook post reacting to the former President’s comments that the NPP will come back to power on the back of his legacy and that of John Agyekum Kufour, he said there’s nothing to write home about Akufo-Addo’s administration.

The national chairman does not move alone; the party stands behind him — Sammy Gyamfi

0

According to a report by GhanaWeb, the National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has addressed the discussions surrounding the nationwide tour currently being undertaken by the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia.

In an interview on JoyNews, shared on X on September 20, 2025, Gyamfi dismissed suggestions that the exercise is linked to personal political ambitions.

He explained that the initiative is a party program designed to show appreciation to Ghanaians for the massive support given to the NDC in the 2024 elections.

According to him, there is nothing extraordinary about the visitations, as Asiedu Nketia is undertaking them in his official role as chairman, with the full backing of the party.

“What is unusual… It is the party; I wouldn’t say the chairman is going on a thank-you tour. Because he’s not going in his personal capacity, he’s going as chairman of the party, and the party is behind him,” he said.

He stressed that the effort should not be mistaken as an individual project but rather a collective responsibility of the party’s leadership.

Gyamfi further noted that while former President John Mahama remains the leader of the NDC, his duties as head of state prevent him from personally visiting every community.

In this regard, the chairman’s outreach is a complementary measure to ensure citizens across the country feel acknowledged for their support.

Touching on the financing of the tour, Gyamfi indicated that it is unlikely the expenses are being covered by the party.

He explained that, by practice, national executives often mobilize resources independently to carry out their assignments.

He added that although he has not confirmed the exact funding arrangements, it would not be surprising if Asiedu Nketia is personally bearing much of the cost.

He emphasized that party resources are usually reserved for a few central programs, while other activities are largely self-financed by executives.

This, he said, aligns with the long-standing operational structure of the NDC.

Afenyo-Markin to Ghanaian Youth: Reject corruption, resist division & demand accountability

0

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has called on Ghanaian youth to reject corruption and resist division, urging them to embrace a new order of governance built on integrity, unity and accountability.

“I urge you to reject corruption and resist division whenever you encounter them. When you choose unity over division, you strengthen the social fabric that holds our nation together. When you speak out against nepotism and injustice, you send a clear message that your generation will not tolerate practices that hold Ghana back,” Mr Afenyo-Markin told students of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), last Friday during the second leg of the launch of the Young Commons Forum (YCF).

The forum, which began at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, is expected to be rolled out across tertiary institutions nationwide. Its main objective is to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice, while nurturing the next generation of leaders and preparing them for the job market. The Winneba edition was held under the theme: “Our leader, our mentor, our protector.” A six-member interim executive committee of the YCF, led by its president Emmanuel Osei, was also inaugurated.

The Effutu MP, who is also the Minority Leader, urged students to live out the values of transparency and honesty in all aspects of their lives. “If you’re a student leader, be transparent with your colleagues. If you’re a volunteer in your community project, honour your commitment. If you take up national service, give it your best. If you run a small business, deal honestly with your customers,” he said, adding that accountability must become a shared value in practice.

He stressed that education alone was not enough to unlock the full potential of the youth, insisting that it must be supported by policies that empower them and create opportunities. “Youth empowerment cannot stop at the lecture hall; it must be backed by deliberate action that opens doors and removes barriers,” he added.

Mr Afenyo-Markin proposed a reimagined curriculum that embraces project-based learning to address real community challenges, as well as opportunities for communication, collaboration, global exposure, and practical civic engagement. “Leadership emerges from character, vision, and the capacity to inspire others into meaningful action,” he noted.

Highlighting the future of work, he said Ghana must invest in innovation, technology, digital creativity, manufacturing, and value addition. He called for deeper collaboration between government and the private sector to build an environment where ideas can thrive. “This means investing in research and development, ensuring access to capital for young entrepreneurs, and celebrating innovation rather than stifling it,” he emphasised.

Turning to politics, Mr Afenyo-Markin urged an end to the “You do me, I do you” cycle of political persecution, which he said undermines national development. “Sometimes we think by bringing down our opponents it will make us popular. It rather pushes the country back,” he warned.

He also challenged the youth to hold leaders accountable, while being accountable themselves. “Don’t abuse support for your entrepreneurial goals, because by doing so you deny the next generation an opportunity,” he said.

Chairing the event, a lecturer at UEW, Mr Eric Nketia, underscored the role of mentorship in leadership, urging current leaders to identify and nurture young people within their communities to take up leadership roles in the future.

The Timeless Elegance of Beautiful White Lace for Women

0

White lace has long been associated with femininity, grace, and timeless beauty. Whether used in bridal gowns, casual dresses, blouses, or even accessories, white lace continues to hold a cherished place in women’s fashion. Its delicate patterns and soft textures offer a sense of romance and sophistication that few other fabrics can match.

One of the most appealing aspects of white lace is its versatility. It can be styled in countless ways to suit various occasions. For formal events such as weddings, baptisms, or garden parties, white lace is a natural choice. It exudes a pure and elegant charm, often seen in intricately designed gowns and dresses. Bridal fashion, in particular, embraces white lace for its classic appeal and ability to add depth and detail without overwhelming the overall look.

In everyday fashion, white lace brings a touch of softness and femininity. A lace blouse paired with denim can create a beautiful balance between casual and chic, while a white lace skirt or dress is perfect for spring and summer outings. The breathable nature of lace fabric also makes it a comfortable choice in warmer weather.

Designers frequently experiment with lace in both modern and vintage-inspired pieces. From bohemian styles with flowing, layered lace to more structured and contemporary designs, white lace proves to be adaptable and fashionable in any form. It can be subtly incorporated as trim or be the main focus of a garment.

Moreover, white lace symbolizes purity and sophistication, which makes it a favored choice not only in Western cultures but also in traditional and ceremonial attire around the world.

Beautiful white lace for women is more than just a fabric—it’s a statement of elegance, delicacy, and timeless style. Whether used in everyday wear or special occasions, it continues to captivate with its intricate beauty and endless charm.

The Gift — Adekunle Gold

0

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Adekunle Kosoko, popularly known as Adekunle Gold, has revealed how his contribution to Beyoncé’s 2019 album, The Lion King: The Gift, was rejected, describing the experience as one of the darkest moments of his career.

The 38-year-old singer recalled that the opportunity came at a time when he was grieving the death of his father. According to him, he had been consumed by sorrow when Beyoncé’s team reached out, inviting him to submit a song for the star-studded project that would later feature Wizkid, Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, Tekno, and Mr Eazi.

“At the time, I was too consumed by grief to even think about music. But one day I forced myself back into the studio. Out of that pain, I wrote Simile,” Adekunle recounted.

Despite pouring his emotions into the track, Adekunle confessed he secretly wished the song would not be chosen, fearing that it reflected too much of his personal turmoil. Eventually, the song did not make the cut. For him, it was both a relief and a blow, a chance missed, yet an outcome he had anticipated.

The rejection meant that The Lion King: The Gift, released alongside Disney’s blockbuster remake, would spotlight several of Nigeria’s biggest stars, but not Adekunle Gold. It was a painful reminder of both personal loss and professional setback.

For years, Simile remained unreleased, a song born of grief but tucked away as a private memory. That changed in 2024 when his longtime collaborator, Michael, stumbled on the track during a studio session and urged him to revisit it.

Encouraged by the rediscovery, Adekunle included Simile on his 2025 album, Fuji. This time, the song carried a different weight — not rejection, but healing. Adekunle said his hope was that it would comfort listeners dealing with grief, heartbreak, or loss in any form.

“It reminded me that even in my most profound loss, I was not alone. I had God to lean on,” he said. “Grief isn’t just about losing a parent. It can be the loss of a person, a friendship, a dream, or even a version of yourself; whatever it is, you don’t have to carry it alone.”

GES Warns Against Fake Recruitment Letter

GES

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has dismissed as fraudulent a letter circulating on social media claiming clearance has been granted for the employment of 50,000 teaching and non-teaching staff.

Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at GES, confirmed the letter did not originate from the education authority and warned the public against falling victim to the deceptive communication. The Service emphasized that no such recruitment process is currently underway.

While the Minister of Education announced in Parliament plans to recruit 50,000 teachers and 10,000 non-teaching staff, the official recruitment process has not started, according to previous GES statements. The fake letter appears designed to exploit public anticipation of this legitimate future recruitment exercise.

In a statement dated June 28, 2025, and signed by Fenyi, the Service warned that all such offers are fraudulent. The notice was reshared on GES’s official Facebook page on August 4, 2025, indicating ongoing concerns about fraudulent recruitment schemes.

“All GES recruitments are completely FREE. No individuals or groups are permitted to charge applicants any fee whatsoever for recruitment, processing, or issuance of appointment letters,” Fenyi stated. The warning comes amid repeated attempts by fraudsters to exploit job seekers in Ghana’s education sector.

“These are attempts to take advantage of the vulnerable and unsuspecting public,” Fenyi noted, encouraging citizens to report anyone involved in fraudulent activities to the nearest police station for swift action.

The education service assured the public that legitimate recruitment exercises will be communicated through official channels, including the GES website and verified social media platforms. GES confirmed that although the Minister for Education has announced plans to recruit 50,000 teachers and 10,000 non-teaching staff, the process is yet to begin.

Recent incidents have shown fake notices misusing Fenyi’s name and containing misleading instructions intended to lure unsuspecting candidates and parents into engaging through unofficial channels. This pattern suggests organized efforts to deceive prospective applicants.

Fenyi, described as an educationist and communications professional, was appointed Head of Public Relations in June 2025, bringing expertise expected to strengthen GES communication and stakeholder engagement strategies.

The warning reflects broader challenges facing Ghana’s public sector recruitment processes, where legitimate announcements often trigger fraudulent schemes targeting desperate job seekers. Educational authorities continue emphasizing vigilance against recruitment scams that exploit public trust in government institutions.

GES urged prospective applicants to verify all recruitment information through official channels and remain cautious of unsolicited communications claiming to offer employment opportunities within the education sector.

The Service maintains that when legitimate recruitment commences, comprehensive details will be published through established communication channels, ensuring transparency and preventing exploitation of job seekers.

Ghana Tennis Club in Adabraka provides an established venue for the competition. The club, which describes itself as “the premier tennis club to be established in the then Gold Coast,” focuses on tennis development and socialization.

Eggley articulated ambitious long-term goals for the tournament’s growth and significance within Ghana’s sporting calendar. “Eventually, our vision transforms this into a main calendar event. The tournament represents a unique convergence of professional networking and athletic competition, offering corporate Ghana an alternative platform for relationship building and brand visibility. With registration closing imminently, corporate teams face final opportunities to participate in what organizers position as a landmark sporting and business event.

The Ghana Tennis Club’s clay courts will host nine days of competitive action, combining serious tennis with corporate relationship building in Ghana’s business community.

Manchester United outcast Andre Onana provided an assist in Trabzonspor’s 1-1 draw against Gaziantep in the Turkish Super Liga match on September 20, 2025.

The United loanee ventured far outside his penalty area, taking matters into his own hands and delivering a pinpoint pass to Paul Onuachu behind the opponent’s defence.

The striker held off several defenders before slotting the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper, helping Trabzonspor come from behind to snatch a point.

This performance marks another boost for Onana, who had a fantastic debut against Fenerbahce, making eight crucial saves despite a narrow 1-0 defeat.

Onana joined the Turkish side on a season-long loan from Manchester United in 2025 after enduring a difficult campaign.

Before the move, he had featured in just one game for United during the 2025/26 season, their Carabao Cup second-round exit against fourth-tier side Grimsby Town, where he conceded 11 times in the penalty shootout.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper is now on a mission to rediscover his best form following a poor run in the 2024/2025 season, during which United’s abysmal performance affected his reputation.

Economist Criticizes Slow Bank Response to Policy Rate Cuts

0

Interest Rates
Interest Rates

Leading economist Dr. Theo Acheampong has criticized Ghana’s commercial banks for their sluggish response to aggressive monetary policy easing, arguing that lending rates remain uncompetitively high despite the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) dramatic 550 basis point reduction in the policy rate this year.

Speaking to The High Street Journal, the economist and political risk analyst highlighted a concerning disconnect between central bank policy adjustments and commercial lending practices that could undermine Ghana’s economic recovery efforts.

The Bank of Ghana slashed its policy rate by 350 basis points to 21.5 percent from 25 percent on September 17, 2025, marking the second major rate cut this year as part of what represents the lowest policy rate level since 2019.

According to Dr. Acheampong’s analysis, the central bank has delivered a cumulative 550 basis point reduction from 27 percent in January 2025 to the current 21.5 percent, creating substantial room for commercial banks to reduce borrowing costs for businesses and consumers.

Money market rates have responded dramatically to the policy easing cycle, with interbank lending rates falling to approximately 23 percent in August from peaks above 30 percent in 2024, demonstrating that wholesale funding costs have declined significantly.

Treasury bill yields have experienced even more dramatic corrections, with the 91-day bill collapsing from 30 percent in December 2024 to 10.3 percent in August 2025, representing a massive 19.7 percentage point decline that reflects improved government fiscal conditions and reduced inflation expectations.

Historical data shows that Ghana’s 91-day Treasury Bill rate stood at 27.73 percent in December 2024, confirming the magnitude of the decline that has occurred across government securities markets throughout 2025.

Dr. Acheampong noted that longer-term government bond yields have similarly collapsed, trading around 15-16 percent compared with 26 percent at the beginning of 2025, indicating broad-based improvement in Ghana’s debt market conditions.

However, commercial bank lending rates have proven more resistant to adjustment, declining to approximately 24 percent in August 2025 from 30 percent a year earlier, a pace that the economist considers insufficient given the scale of policy rate reductions.

The persistence of elevated lending rates despite dramatically lower funding costs suggests that banks may be prioritizing profit margins over supporting broader economic growth through increased credit availability.

Dr. Acheampong emphasized that accelerated lending rate adjustments could unlock investment opportunities, stimulate job creation, and reduce cost-of-living pressures for consumers and businesses still recovering from recent economic shocks.

The analysis indicates that the central bank has fulfilled its monetary policy mandate by creating appropriate conditions for lower borrowing costs, placing responsibility on commercial banks to transmit these benefits to the real economy.

Ghana’s banking sector has historically maintained relatively wide spreads between deposit and lending rates, a practice that generates substantial profits but may limit credit access during periods when economic stimulus is most needed.

The economist’s criticism comes amid growing pressure on banks to support economic recovery efforts, particularly as the government seeks to rebuild investor confidence and stimulate private sector investment following recent macroeconomic stabilization efforts.

Lower lending rates would provide crucial support for small and medium enterprises that form the backbone of Ghana’s economy but often struggle to access affordable credit for expansion and operational needs.

The sluggish adjustment in commercial lending rates could also undermine the effectiveness of the central bank’s expansionary monetary policy stance, potentially limiting the intended economic stimulus effects.

Dr. Acheampong’s analysis suggests that Ghana’s lending rates remain uncompetitive within the West African subregion, potentially hampering the country’s ability to attract investment and support sustainable economic growth.

The disconnect between policy rates and commercial lending practices highlights broader challenges in monetary policy transmission mechanisms that many emerging economies experience when attempting to stimulate economic activity through interest rate adjustments.

Continued monitoring of banking sector responses to policy easing will be crucial for assessing whether additional measures may be necessary to ensure that monetary policy benefits reach businesses and consumers effectively.
