Telecel celebrates International Women’s week with a series of empowering events

0

Telecel Ghana is celebrating International Women’s Week with a vibrant line up of activities under the derivative theme ‘Accelerate HER.’

The week-long celebration, which runs from March 3 to 8, is aimed at empowering women, challenging gender biases, and advancing inclusivity.

In line with International Women’s Day 2025 celebration under the global theme – Accelerate Action, the telecommunications giant has outlined a number of internal and external activities to amplify women’s voices, invest in their future, and challenge gender stereotypes.

In a message to launch International Women’s Week, chief executive of Telecel Ghana, Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai highlighted the importance of taking bold steps to elevate and empower women, noting that progress toward gender equality remains slow globally.

“At Telecel Ghana, we don’t just talk about change, we drive it. This International Women’s Week, we are taking concrete steps to ensure that women receive increased support and the push they need to succeed. Accelerating HER is everyone’s responsibility.”

The celebration kicks off with Wear Purple Day, where employees will wear purple attire to symbolise solidarity with women’s empowerment.

The #SheElevatesMe campaign will be rolled out to encourage staff to share posts appreciating the inspiring women in their lives.

A wealth building and financial planning webinar will be organised for Ladies in Telecel to provide valuable insights on achieving financial independence and equipping women with economic strategies to secure their futures.

Telecel Ghana will organise the “Accelerate HER Future” Mentorship initiative at the Kanda Cluster of Schools, where female employees will inspire young girls to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM).

Additionally, the ‘Buy A Math Set for HER’ campaign is crowdfunding donations to provide essential math tools for girls, ensuring they have the resources for academic
studies.

The telco will also host a night of engaging conversation over drinks focused on strategies for women to accelerate their personal and professional growth.

This will be preceded by a ‘Boss Lady Headshot Shoot’, offering female employees the chance to enhance their professional profiles with high-quality headshots.

The climax of the International Women’s Week will be the second edition of the Women 100 Power Connect, a gathering of accomplished and influential women from all sectors of our country to share experiences, inspire one another, exchange ideas and discover areas for collaboration.

“This month is about more than celebration; it’s about concrete action. We are committed to creating opportunities for women to thrive, both within Telecel Ghana and in the communities we serve.

The ‘Accelerate HER’ theme reflects our belief that empowering women is essential for building a stronger, more inclusive and equitable world,” said Daniel Adanu, acting Human Resources Director of Telecel Ghana.

Telecel Ghana hopes the Accelerate HER campaign for International Women’s Week will empower more women, challenge biases, and create opportunities for growth to drive gender equity

We must review ‘Guggisberg’ agreements governing our extractive industry

0

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated the need for a comprehensive review of Ghana’s extractive sector agreements, aligning with recent concerns raised by former Chief Justice and Council of State member, Sophia Akuffo.

Speaking at the National Economic Dialogue in Accra, Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s mineral agreements remain outdated and must be restructured to ensure that the country benefits more from its natural resources.

$5.4 million in appearance fees and worse. The GFA’s preposterous 2022 World Cup budget proposal revealed

0

Time is a great source of irony. It reveals the truth in every matter, yet, often after the fact and when very little can be salvaged.

Only a week ago, the Ghana Football Association was pontificating piety, trumpeting its innocence in the thorny issue of Black Stars budgets and national team expenditure.
The football governing body said its role in national teams’ expenditure was limited to simply drafting budgets.

To say that in response to President Mahama’s call for accountability is to suggest that they would remain oblivious to the contents of the budget.

As fate would have it, it has taken all of two working days to expose the extent of information and detail, the GFA has in such matters.

JoySports has intercepted a memo written by the GFA’s General Secretary, with details of their proposed budget for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Appearance fees

On November 14, 2022, Black Stars coach Otto announced a squad list of twenty-six players to represent Ghana at the World Cup.
Beyond the other-worldly experience of playing on the grandest stage of all, each player was going to earn a whopping $100,000 as an appearance fee.

What Ghanaians did not know, was that the GFA had budgeted for an additional twenty-eight people to receive appearance fees, taking the total number of appearance fee beneficiaries to fifty-four.

Yes, FIFTY-FOUR!

That sums up to $5.4 million.

Otto Addo’s ”Personal Assistant”

The GFA penciled down Otto Addo’s ”Personal Assistant” to receive an honorarium of $20,000.
He or she earned the same amount as Ghana’s scouts and as much as the head of delegation for the tournament.

Plane tickets.

Another curious item on the GFA’s budget was the cost of air tickets to enplane the Black Stars players to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The GFA budgeted to pay $7,000 for each player.

How did the plane tickets cost the same for each player when they flew to the UAE from different parts of the world? For example, Andre Ayew was playing in Qatar at the time. How could his plane ticket cost the same as Daniel Afriyie Barnieh who joined from Ghana?

Purse holder

If ever there was any doubt about the high-level collusion between the Finance Ministry, Sports and Recreation Ministry, and the GFA, it is the honorarium for the purse holder.
The chief spending officer was still penciled down to earn $10,000 for doing what would essentially have been the same job the Finance Ministry pays him or her for.

The full budget is contained in the document below.

Top Reasons to Invest in Ghana’s Mining IndustryTop Reasons to Invest in Ghana’s Mining Industry

Ghana’s mining industry stands as a key driver of economic growth – with gross domestic product (GDP) projections reaching 1.5% by 2025 fuelled by expanding opportunities within the sector.

A stable political and business environment, coupled with the discovery of new mineral reserves and a well-established mining ecosystem, Ghana is an attractive investment destination for global mining institutions.

The upcoming Mining in Motion Summit, taking place in Accra on June 2 – 4 will further highlight lucrative investment opportunities, connecting Ghanaian stakeholders with international financiers and technology providers to enhance collaboration across the mining value chain.

Rich Mineral Resources

Ghana leads Africa in gold production and ranks 6th globally. In 2024 alone, artisanal miners contributed over $5 billion in foreign exchange earnings, underscoring the vast potential of Ghana’s gold sector.

Ongoing industrial-scale projects like Goldstone’s Homase Mine Expansion, Cardinal Namdini Mine and Newmont’s Ahafo North Project continue to expand investment opportunities in the gold industry.

In addition to gold, Ghana is the world’s 4th-largest manganese producer, presenting attractive prospects for investors seeking exposure to high-value minerals.

The country’s untapped reserves of lithium, iron ore and bauxite also offer substantial growth potential as the demand for these minerals expand owing to the energy transition.

Strong, Investor-Friendly Regulatory Framework

Ghana introduced incentives including as tax breaks, customs duty exemptions and foreign ownership rights, attracting significant foreign direct investment.

For example, Atlantic Lithium secured $6.7 million to accelerate the Ewoyaa Lithium Project, while Asante Gold committed $525 million to expand its Bibiani and Chirano Mines. Policies such as the Green Minerals Policy (2023) streamline entry for critical mineral investors, while the Equipment Tracking Regulations (2020) simplify equipment procurement and transportation processes for mining projects.

Skilled Workforce

Ghana’s mining history has fostered a highly skilled workforce, making it easier for international investors to recruit trained personnel for their operations.

Partnerships with global institutions, including the World Bank, have led to initiatives like the Ghana Landscape Restoration and Small-Scale Mining Project, which equips miners with modern, sustainable practices. Additionally, programs focused on apprenticeship, mentorship and capacity-building continue to enhance the local workforce. AngloGold Ashanti graduated 1,010 apprentices in October 2023 and added 140 more in February 2024, supporting Ghana’s local content development.

Infrastructure Readiness

Ghana’s infrastructure readiness further strengthens its appeal as a mining investment hub. Recent developments include the inauguration of the Royal Ghana Gold Refinery in Accra in August 2024, which allows for local gold processing, streamlining operations and boosting export revenues through the sale of refined gold.

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in collaboration with testing laboratories company Intertek launched a new testing laboratory in Tarkwa, in 2023.

The laboratory offers faster mineral sample analysis for over 500 exploration projects and 23 large-scale operations. Furthermore, the continuous modernization of the Tema and Takoradi ports has improved export logistics, ensuring that Ghana’s minerals reach international markets efficiently.

Amid these investor-friendly conditions established by Ghana, Mining in Motion will further unveil burgeoning and lucrative opportunities within the West African nation’s mining sector. The summit will serve as a platform to connect stakeholders, foster partnerships, and facilitate deal signings that drive growth and investment. #Top Reasons to Invest in Ghana’s Mining Industry#

Let’s Address Economic Difficulties Together – Mahama

0

President John Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has called on stakeholders from various sectors to support the government’s agenda of resetting the country, as it work towards achieving sustainable economic growth.

President Mahama, who made the call during his opening remarks at the National Economic Dialogue 2025 yesterday in Accra, said the dialogue is aimed at soliciting the views of all stakeholders for inclusive economic growth.

“For me, this is not just another policy discussion. It is an urgent call to action. A crucial moment for us as stakeholders to unite with purpose and resolve the challenges that face us. It is an invitation to all stakeholders to contribute their expertise, ideas, and dedication to this national effort. Ghana is at a critical crossroads in this economic development,” he added.

He also stated that Ghana’s collective resilience, integrity, and determination have always been the driving force of the nation’s progress, as such the two- day event was not meant to recount the nation’s struggles or resign itself to economic stagnation, but a platform to seek solutions, adopt strategies that will put the country on a sustainable growth trajectory as well as build an economy that works for every Ghanaian.

The President also mentioned that the insights, diverse perspectives, and actionable recommendations that emerge from the discussions will transcend theoretical frameworks and drive real, impactful decisions.

He emphasised that the decisions will guide the nation forward as it focuses on practical strategies to restore macroeconomic stability and also pave way for long-term economic transformation.

The long-term economic transformation the President mentioned include developing policies that stimulate growth and create sustainable job opportunities for the  rapidly growing nation as well as examining the structural reforms that are necessary to unleash the private sector’s potential and make it truly the engine of growth to drive job creation and innovation.

“It is vital that we ask to move towards a more prosperous future and that the economic gains we achieve are distributed equitably, leaving no one behind and fostering an inclusive growth that benefits every sector of society, from the most marginalised communities to the industrial leaders of tomorrow,” he added.

President Mahama further urged stakeholders not to relent in their quest to support him to rebuild the country despite the challenges ahead.

The two-day event, held under the theme: “Resetting Ghana: Building the Economy we want Together,” also brought together government officials, industrialists, civil society organisations, members from the academia among other dignitaries.

Ghana could become an upper middle-income country by 2038 – Deputy Finance Minister

Featured

Mohammed Ali

1 minute read

Ghana could attain upper middle-income status by 2038 if the country adopts an ambitious and innovative economic approach, Deputy Minister of Finance Thomas Nyarko Ampem has said.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, 3rd March, Mr Ampem cited economic projections from the Finance Ministry, which suggest that Ghana’s current growth path would place it in the upper middle-income category by 2050.

He, however, stated that with a more aggressive strategy, the country could reach this goal by 2038.

“The choice is ours. If we take a cautious approach, we will get there by 2050. But if we push harder with innovative policies, we can reach upper middle-income status by 2038,” he said.

He called for national dialogue and consensus-building on economic policies, expressing concern over the absence of opposition parties from recent economic forums.

“These discussions help us agree on the way forward as a nation. It is worrying that some stakeholders have refused to take part in these engagements,” he noted.

Ghana was classified as a lower middle-income country in 2010 following a rebasing of its GDP. Economic challenges in recent years, including high inflation, rising debt, and currency depreciation, have, however, slowed progress.

The government has indicated that its upcoming budget will outline measures to accelerate economic growth, including improved revenue collection, rationalised spending, and investment in productive sectors.

The ripple effect on Ghana’s fragile economy

0

GhanaWeb Feature by Mawuli Ahorlumegah

United States President Donald Trump under an executive order on Tuesday March 4, 2025 imposed a sweeping 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada, alongside a sharp increase in tariffs on Chinese imports.

The decision which has been described by many as an extraordinary measure aimed at addressing security concerns and trade imbalances, has already set the stage for economic retaliation from key US trading partners.

As the trade war escalates, the impact is expected to extend beyond North America and China, reverberating across global markets, including Ghana’s economy.

GhanaWeb Business examines the ripple effect of these tariffs on Ghana’s economy, which is on the cusp of recovery.

US tariffs and the global economy

The tariffs imposed by the US apply to a wide range of goods, including fresh produce, automobiles and parts, and electronics such as mobile phones and computers. With the US importing over $1.4 trillion worth of goods from Mexico, Canada, and China combined, accounting for more than 40% of its total imports, this move is expected to disrupt global supply chains and cause price surges worldwide.

In response, both Canada and China have announced retaliatory tariffs on US goods, targeting essential commodities such as wheat, corn, soybeans, dairy, and meats. This development is likely to send shockwaves through commodity markets, affecting economies dependent on these trade flows, including Ghana.

Impact on Ghana’s trade and economy

While Ghana is not a direct player in the tariff war, its economy remains vulnerable to its ripple effects in multiple ways including:

Higher import costs for Ghanaian businesses and consumers

Ghana imports a significant share of electronics, machinery, and automobile parts from the US, Canada, China, and Mexico, either directly or through third-party nations.

The new tariffs will likely increase the cost of these goods, pushing up prices in Ghana’s local market. Businesses dependent on these imports, including automotive dealers and electronics retailers, may have to pass on the increased costs to consumers.

Commodity price volatility

With China imposing tariffs on US agricultural products like wheat, corn, and soybeans, global commodity prices could see sharp fluctuations.

Ghana, which imports wheat and other agricultural products, may experience price hikes, affecting industries such as bread and beverage production. Furthermore, changes in global demand for cocoa beans which one of Ghana’s major exports could impact its revenue streams if the trade war alters investment and consumer spending patterns in key markets.

Disruptions in Ghana-China trade relations

Ghana maintains a robust trade partnership with China, relying on the Asian giant for infrastructure financing, imports, and business investments. If the US intensifies its trade war, Chinese economic slowdown or shifts in global supply chains could affect Chinese investment in Africa, including in Ghana.

Additionally, a weakened Chinese economy could also reduce demand for Ghanaian exports like oil and minerals, further impacting government revenue.

US-Ghana trade and investment uncertainty

If trade tensions escalate, Ghana may find itself in a complex position regarding future trade negotiations with the US.

American businesses facing higher costs due to tariffs may reduce investment in African markets, affecting sectors such as manufacturing, technology, and construction. Moreover, if the US takes a broader protectionist stance, future Ghana-US trade agreements could be impacted.

The way forward for Ghana

As global markets adjust to the new trade landscape, Ghana must adopt strategic measures to mitigate potential economic disruptions which include the following;

Diversifying trade partners: Ghana should strengthen trade agreements with the European Union, Asia, and within Africa, leveraging initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to reduce dependence on US and Chinese markets.

Boosting local production: Investing in local manufacturing and agriculture will help lessen reliance on imports, insulating the local economy from external trade shocks.

Monitoring global market trends: Government agencies and businesses in Ghana must stay informed about international trade developments to make data-driven decisions that protect Ghana’s economic interests.

While the full extent of the impact remains uncertain, Ghana’s proactive response will determine how well it weathers the storm of the escalating US tariff war.

The coming months will be critical in shaping the country’s trade resilience and economic stability in an increasingly volatile global economy.

Prophet Ogyaba (L) and Evangelist Diana Asamoah (R) Prophet Ogyaba (L) and Evangelist Diana Asamoah (R)

Evangelist Diana Asamoah and Prophet Ogyaba have reignited their feud, which started after the latter became embroiled in an extramarital affair scandal.

The two have been at each other’s throat ever since Diana Asamoah openly criticised and judged Prophet Ogyaba for his ‘immoral’ actions, labeling him a fake man of God, among others.

Their feud took a more personal turn when Ogyaba also responded with verbal attacks.

While one might have thought their feud ended, it appears that it hasnt.

In a latest development, a video making waves online has captured Diana Asamoah issuing a stern warning to Prophet Ogyaba to step down from his position if he cannot live a righteous life as stated in the Bible.

According to her, Prophet Ogyaba is a nobody and not a true man of God.

She emphasised that, as a woman, such a man would never catch her fancy and that God would never bring someone like like him her way.

“You haven’t delivered yourself, yet you are delivering others. God would not give me such a person to marry as a husband and I am not perturbed by his curses. I am not even worried about what others are saying. Why would God give me a pastor who can’t close his zip as a husband?

“He is a nobody moreover he doesn’t possess the anointing of God. Among all the pastors in the country, he is the least powerful one. If you think you can’t continue with the work of God, better resign,” she said.

Diana Asamoah further cautioned Christians to be vigilant about who they label their spiritual father.

She added that pastors who don’t live a godly life end up transferring bad influences to their church members.

“I have always been saying if you ask a man of God who is a womaniser to pray for you, he ends up transferring that spirit into you. Meanwhile, before you started to worship in his church you were not a womaniser. You don’t have to follow any pastor,” she added.

Armed illegal miners have reportedly taken over forest reserves Armed illegal miners have reportedly taken over forest reserves

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has criticised the government for what they perceive as a lack of proactiveness and preparedness in addressing the illegal mining issues that are negatively impacting the country.

In a press briefing on what they called the ‘True State of the Nation Address’ on March 3, 2025, the Minority highlighted the takeover of forest reserves by armed illegal miners, expressing concerns over the government’s inability to effectively address the situation.

The NPP MPs questioned why security agencies, who are well-trained and equipped to confront armed illegal miners, have not been deployed to address the situation.

This came after claims by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, that security forces and the Forestry Commission no longer have access to 44 forest reserves due to their complete takeover by armed illegal miners.

“The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, speaking to Parliament on February 19, 2025, raised a very disturbing issue of insecurity leading to an alarming rate of illegal mining activities within the nation’s forest reserves. Nine (9) out of the forty-four (44) forest reserves have been completely taken by illegal mining thugs with impunity.

“Our security agents and the Forestry Commission no longer have access to these Forest Reserves. We wish to ask, since when did thugs involved in illegal mining become more powerful than our well-trained security agents? This is the true state of the fight against galamsey for which reason the president’s address was scanty on any real steps to tackle the canker,” the Minority addressed.

They maintained the view that despite the NDC’s strong campaign against illegal mining and numerous promises to address the issue, the party lacks effective strategies on how they intend to tackle the problem.

Additionally, they accused the NDC of engaging in propaganda regarding the issue of illegal mining, particularly when they made claims that certain personalities within the NPP were complicit in illegal mining, despite lacking any evidence to substantiate these allegations.

“After having made so much propaganda about it while in opposition, key NDC figures appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee could not substantiate any of the propaganda allegations of the NPP being complicit in the galamsey phenomenon,” the MPs added.

Long church services are boring, make them short

Ex-Black Stars striker, Asamoah Gyan Ex-Black Stars striker, Asamoah Gyan

Legendary Ghanaian footballer Asamoah Gyan has admonished pastors to ensure that church services are conducted within a short period.

According to him, it would be appropriate for various church leaders to consider holding services for one hour and thirty minutes as that would encourage people to attend services.

The all-time Black Stars top scorer asserted that the longer church services are, the more reluctant people feel to attend.

Speaking in an Instagram live session, Gyan implored pastors to prioritize making church services shorter as that would allow people to attend to other duties.

“Church services should be short with quality, not long, to encourage people to attend. If it can be done within one hour and thirty minutes, it will be fine.

“When it’s too long, it becomes boring. So, I’m pleading with all pastors to consider this concern. Even as I seem to be speaking for a long time, it’s becoming boring,” he said.

Aban Papa Aba Ampa – Netizens React as Roads Minister Orders Closure of ‘Death Trap’ Atwima Mponua Bridge

0

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has ordered for the closure of a ‘death trap’ bridge in the Ashanti Region that recently went viral on social media.

A viral video from last week showed the Atwima Mponua Bridge which traverses the Offin River. Residents of the area complained about the sorry state of the bridge, which was in a bad shape and almost impassable at one choke point due to massive holes.

Cars using the bridge had to use one very narrow undamaged side of the bridge and even that involved passing over some very loose wood covering the holes.

In the viral video, residents called on the government to come and fix the bridge before tragedy strikes.

The information appears to have reached the government, who made moves to see to the bridge being shut down.

Netizens praised the government for being responsive to challenges, unlike a certain previous government.

“Humans are leading now. Kasongo is watching Ghana Tv with fake account . God Bless JDM,” one user said.

Meet The NPP Bigwig With 15 Mining Companies And How He Was Sacked by Nana Addo

0

Amid the ongoing controversy surrounding illegal mining (galamsey) and water pollution, a name has surfaced in a recent report by The Fourth Estate. This individual is described as having a significant presence in the illegal mining industry.

He is linked to 15 mining companies, and his connections to the sector have drawn considerable attention. His involvement in mining has been a defining aspect of his career, but his activities have often conflicted with the government’s efforts to reform small-scale mining and combat illegal mining practices.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Small-Scale Mining, established by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, was created to address the challenges posed by illegal mining. The committee was tasked with reviewing small-scale mining operations, curbing illegal activities, and promoting sustainable and environmentally responsible mining practices. Illegal mining has severely impacted Ghana’s forests, water bodies, and farmlands, with many government initiatives struggling to achieve lasting solutions.

This individual was a key member of the committee, providing him with a platform to influence mining policies and reforms. However, his tenure was cut short due to allegations that he sought to use his position for personal gain. Reports suggested that he was involved in discussions proposing that committee members could leverage their roles to engage in small-scale mining themselves.

These allegations raised concerns about a conflict of interest, particularly given his connections to 15 mining companies. The controversy damaged his reputation and led to his dismissal from the committee by President Akufo-Addo. The president’s decision was seen as part of his broader commitment to cleaning up the mining sector and eliminating obstacles in the fight against illegal mining.

Here are the 15 companies connected to this individual:

1. HAPIC Mining Limited

2. North Rock Limited

3. High Street Limited

4. Elite Minerals Ghana Limited

5. Sam and Gyan Limited

6. Akonta Mining Company Limited

7. Akosdwomo Company Limited

8. Clean-Jobs Resources

9. Unipower Mining Company Limited

10. FJ Minerals Ltd.

11. Ofori-Poku Company Ltd.

12. Kaboa Plux

13. RYGO Excel Globe Mining Ltd.

14. DML

15. Oleum Ghana Limited

His ties to these 15 mining companies have sparked significant concern, especially as the government intensifies efforts to regulate the mining industry. His substantial influence in the sector has led to questions about how his business interests might intersect with his public responsibilities and whether his removal from the committee was sufficient to address potential conflicts of interest.

Critics argue that his involvement in the mining industry highlights a broader issue of political figures having vested interests in sectors they are meant to regulate. This undermines the credibility of the government’s efforts to tackle illegal mining, particularly when those responsible for enforcing regulations are allegedly involved in the very activities they are supposed to prevent.

NPP Left Over GH¢5bn In Buffers – Amin Adam

0

Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam flanked by members of the Minority

The Minority in Parliament has strongly refuted claims that the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government left no financial buffers for the new administration.

According to them, as at the end of 2024, the NPP government left over GH¢5 billion in buffers from revenue collected by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in the Treasury Main 2 Account.

At a news conference addressed by former Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam in Parliament yesterday, the Minority argued that these funds have since been utilised by the new government.

They insisted that, contrary to the President’s assertion, various designated accounts were set aside to support expenditure and maturing debt obligations.

The Minority criticised the President for focusing solely on the Sinking Fund as if it were the only available buffer.

Dr. Adam explained that over the past eight years, the previous government maintained several financial reserves, including the Sinking Fund (both Dollar and Cedi accounts), the Eurobond Proceeds Account, the IMF Proceeds Account, and the Treasury Main 2 Account.

“To suggest that there were no buffers is misleading,” the former minister stated, noting, “For example, the IMF’s third review disbursement of $360 million was received on December 2, 2024, and was kept as a buffer.”

“A portion of these funds was used to pay $346 million in Eurobond coupons on January 3, 2025, yet this payment did not come from the Sinking Fund,” Dr. Adam noted.

Similarly, the Minority indicated that in October 2024, the government paid $520 million to Eurobond holders for first coupon payments and other associated fees, yet again, these payments did not come from the Sinking Fund.

“How could we have made these payments if we didn’t have buffers?” they questioned, emphasising that the previous government left sufficient reserves to meet the country’s financial obligations.

With the ongoing debate over Ghana’s economic management, the Minority’s revelations challenge the President’s narrative and raise concerns about how the country’s financial resources are being accounted for. The coming months are expected to see increased scrutiny over the handling of public funds as both political sides seek to shape public perception ahead of the next election cycle.

Financial Sector

The Minority also berated President Mahama on his remarks on the country’s financial sector, accusing him of making sweeping statements without any factual basis.

In his address, President Mahama stated, “The financial sector continues to struggle despite the previous government reportedly spending GH¢29.9 billion on the financial sector clean-up exercise to date.”

However, the Minority insists that this claim misrepresents the reality of Ghana’s financial industry.

According to the Minority, while they sympathise with those affected by the financial sector cleanup, the exercise was a necessary intervention to prevent the banking industry from collapsing, protect depositors’ funds, and revive the economy.

The former Finance Minister argued that the financial sector has emerged stronger, with banks posting impressive financial ratios and returning to profitability, despite the effects of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) on local banks.

“The evidence today shows that notwithstanding the DDEP effects on local banks, the financial sector has become stronger, with banks posting impressive financial ratios and returning to profitability. This is the true state of the financial sector in Ghana,” Dr. Adam stated.

Citing data from the Bank of Ghana’s January 2025 publication, Summary of Economic and Financial Data, he underscored significant growth in the sector, noting that Total Assets of the financial sector grew by 33.8% by the end of 2024.

According to him, Total Deposits saw an annual increase of 28.8%, while core liquid assets to short-term liabilities rose by 46.3%.

The Minority also pointed to strong performance in the capital markets, noting that the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) All-Share Index grew by 56.2% in 2024. Furthermore, profitability indicators in the banking sector showed robust growth.

The former minister said Return on Assets (before tax) recorded 5.4% growth in December 2023 and 5% in December 2024, whilst Return on Equity (after tax) grew at 34.2% in December 2023 and 30.8% in December 2024.

“It is no secret that the strength of an economy is also determined by the strength of its financial sector. Given the record of performance of our financial sector under the NPP administration, is it correct for such an economy to be described as badly managed?” the Minority questioned.

They further argued that all key components of the economy are in good shape, including the real sector, which has demonstrated strong GDP growth, and the external sector, which has posted impressive trade and current account surpluses.

“Therefore, we need to ask President Mahama—how did he come by the conclusion that the economy was mismanaged?” the former minister stated.

Gyakye Quayson To Know Fate March 27

Gyakye Quayson

A High Court in Accra has set March 27, 2025, to decide whether or not Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson ought to mount a defence in his trial for deceit of public officer in obtaining a Ghanaian passport, and other charges.

The Office of the Attorney General has been given up to close of today to file its written argument in support of whether they have made sufficient case for the MP to open his defence.

The prosecution failed to meet the deadline set by the court for them and the defence to file their addresses simultaneously, although lawyers for the accused have filed their written submission.

Tsatsu Tsikata, counsel for Mr. Quayson, told the court yesterday that, since the prosecution now has more time to file the address, they should address the issues raised by the defence.

Justice Mary Yanzuh adjourned the trial to March 27, 2025, to give a ruling on the submissions.

The prosecution closed its case on February 12, 2025, after which the court ordered both sides to file written submissions on whether a case has been made by the prosecution.

Mr. Quayson has been charged with five counts of deceit of public officer, forgery of passport or travel certificate, knowingly making a false statutory statement, perjury and false declaration of office.

The offences relate to the MP’s activities in the run up to the 2020 parliamentary election, where he allegedly acquired a Ghanaian passport without renouncing his Canadian citizenship, as well as making a statutory declaration on his nomination form that he owed allegiance to no country other than Ghana.

The prosecution had recalled its fifth witness on February 12 to tender in the original and the full compliments of certain documents, but was unable to do so because the documents were yet to be made available by the Passport Office and the Electoral Commission.

He, however, tendered in evidence the Parliamentary Nomination Form of the MP and was briefly cross-examined by Tsatsu Tsikata, counsel for the accused.

The witness insisted that the MP, at the time of filing his nomination, had both Ghanaian and Canadian citizenship.

“I say so because a copy his Canadian passport which came to my custody during investigation was authenticated by the Canadian High Commission in Ghana,” he added.

Esi Dentaa Yankah, a Principal State Attorney, after the witness was discharged, told the court the prosecution was closing its case.

Justice Mary Yanzuh, the trial judge therefore, directed both the accused and the prosecution to file the submission of no case and a response to same simultaneously within two weeks.

Franklin Cudjoe Proposes Better RESET Model To Mahama

0

IMANI Africa’s founding president, Franklin Cudjoe, has unveiled a bold governance reform model aimed at resetting Ghana’s approach to leadership and public accountability. Known as the RESET Challenge, which stands for Revitalizing the Economy through Stewardship & Ethical Transformation; the proposal was presented at the National Economic Dialogue in Accra, sparking fresh conversations about the urgent need for a more transparent and citizen-centered governance system. He urged H.E Mahama to adopt this RESET model and use it in his governance.

Cudjoe did not mince words, describing Ghana’s governance system as “a broken machine running on outdated controls.” He argued that public officials have been trapped in a cycle of self-preservation, manipulating state institutions for personal gain instead of serving the national interest. RESET, he explained, aims to flip this culture on its head by instilling ethical leadership at all levels of governance.

The RESET model is anchored on five key pillars:

1. Signed Commitment to Transparency

Ministers and Chief Directors will voluntarily sign onto a clear governance framework that publicly outlines their sectoral vision and goals. This will serve as a performance contract, making their plans and promises visible to all Ghanaians.

2. Radical Transparency and Open Data

Public officials will commit to real-time open data policies, allowing citizens to track procurement processes, policy decisions, and performance metrics. This ensures government business is fully visible to the people.

3. Bi-Weekly Public Town Halls

Every two weeks, public officials will hold town halls (both online and in-person) where they explain key decisions, respond to public concerns, and discuss policy implementation openly.

4. Citizen Feedback Group

Ghanaians who actively participate in these town halls will be enrolled in a stakeholder group that offers continuous feedback to the government, ensuring citizen voices directly shape governance.

5. Performance and Accountability Reviews

Every six months, public officials will undergo evaluations based on both measurable performance and their responsiveness to public engagement. This continuous feedback loop will keep officials on their toes.

Franklin Cudjoe stressed that RESET does not aim to replace existing audit processes or financial controls but rather to complement them by injecting human-centered, ethical leadership into governance.

He called on policymakers and citizens to embrace the RESET model or propose even better alternatives. “Ghana cannot afford to keep doing business as usual,” Cudjoe declared. “It’s time to RESET governance and secure our collective future.”

Afenyo-Markin Leads Minority Caucus in Eulogising Dr. J. B. Danquah at 60th Anniversary Commemoration

0

As Ghana prepares to honour the towering legacy of Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah on the 60th anniversary of his passing, a significant section of the country’s parliamentary leadership has lent its voice to the tributes immortalised in the commemorative compendium set to be launched at the upcoming remembrance service on 9th March 2025 at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, Kyebi.

The event, organised under the auspices of Okatakyie Boakye Danquah Ababio, the current Twafohene of Akyem Abuakwa, seeks to reaffirm Dr. Danquah’s immense contributions to Ghana’s democratic governance, intellectual tradition, and constitutional evolution. Leading these tributes is Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, alongside a formidable group of Members of Parliament, spanning constituencies and political traditions, who have paid glowing homage to the statesman, philosopher, and legal luminary.

In his tribute, Hon. Afenyo-Markin reflected on Dr. Danquah’s dual role as a traditional leader and a modern constitutional thinker, remarking, “As Twafohene of Akyem Abuakwa, Danquah personified his belief that traditional institutions could coexist with modern governance. He demonstrated how chiefs might serve as custodians of local accountability, tempering the centralising tendencies of the state—a vision strikingly relevant today as Ghana implements, debates, and refines decentralisation.”

His Deputy, Hon. Patricia Appiagyei, echoed these sentiments, emphasising Danquah’s unwavering commitment to economic self-reliance and industrialisation, “His legacy serves as a reminder of the importance of self-reliance, industrialisation, and preserving Ghana’s rich cultural heritage. Dr. Danquah strongly advocated the need for Ghana to rely on its people for development after achieving independence.”

Hon. Kingsley Agyemang, MP for Abuakwa South, highlighted Danquah’s vision of democracy as an inclusive and mature political process: “Dr. Danquah’s legacy transcends the political ideologies of his time. His vision was deeply rooted in the belief that the true greatness of a nation lies not in its triumphs over others, but in its ability to bring people together, embrace diverse perspectives, and build a system founded on justice and accountability. His political philosophy called for a higher standard of political maturity, in which the opposition is seen not as the enemy, but as a vital contributor to the national discourse.”

For Hon. Korkor Asante Esq., MP for Atiwa West, the lesson from Danquah’s sacrifice is one that must never be forgotten: “Danquah died in prison as a political prisoner. He died for his ideas and beliefs. His tragic death in the dungeon of Nsawam prison remains a stain on our political history. Never again, never again, should any person be imprisoned on political grounds. Never again should Ghana be made to experience such a tragic death as Danquah’s death.”

Adding his voice, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, MP for Ofoase Ayirebi, underscored Danquah’s foundational role in Ghana’s independence, lamenting attempts to obscure his contributions: “JB Danquah was a major contributor to Ghana’s independence and post-independence struggle. Despite attempts by the Political Left to water down his contribution, the facts of history outline Danquah’s part in procuring an independent Ghana and in helping build the structures of an early Ghana.”

Similarly, Prof. Kingsley Nyarko, MP for Kwadaso, spoke to Danquah’s indomitable patriotism, quoting from one of his final writings in 1964: “His contribution will never be lost on us; it was indeed enormous. His commitment and dedication to the cause and direction of the country were never in doubt. From his early years until his unfortunate death, one could realise his deep sense of patriotism and passion in ensuring the emancipation and prosperity of the country. A year before his death, he wrote, ‘…Even at the age of 68 I have not given up the struggle, even though…I have been crippled by it professionally and financially…But there is more to life than merely being alive or merely free, and I am determined to bring that ‘more’ into the life of our people…’”

In a fitting tribute to Dr. Danquah’s legacy of scholarship and intellectual rigour, Hon. Davis Ansah Opoku acknowledged the ongoing efforts to honour him tangibly: “To honour his legacy, I am pleased to acknowledge the efforts of Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the immediate past First Lady of the Republic of Ghana and wife of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, nephew of J.B. Danquah, in facilitating the construction of a modern library in Bepong. This initiative serves as a fitting tribute to a man with immense intellectual contributions. The facility has yet to be commissioned, and I have formally requested that it be named after Dr. J.B. Danquah. This would immortalise his name in his birthplace and inspire future generations who walk through its doors to pursue knowledge.”

A Momentous Event to Celebrate a Timeless Legacy

The commemorative compendium, which captures sixty statements marking sixty years since Dr. Danquah’s passing, is set to be launched during the remembrance service on 9th March 2025 at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Kyebi. Under the leadership of Okatakyie Boakye Danquah Ababio, the current Twafohene of Akyem Abuakwa, this event will stand as a solemn reaffirmation of the enduring values and principles for which Dr. Danquah lived and died.

The gathering is expected to draw an illustrious assembly of academics, legal luminaries, political leaders, traditional rulers, and members of the media, all united in a singular purpose—to honour and celebrate the life of a man whose intellectual depth, legal acumen, and unrelenting commitment to democracy shaped Ghana’s destiny.

Take leading role in resource exploitation

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has advocated increased indigenous participation in exploitating the country’s natural resources, as part of a broader strategy to revive the economy and reduce reliance on foreign entities.

Multinational companies dominate Ghana’s gold and oil industries, accounting for nearly 70 percent of total merchandise exports. This means that the revenue generated from these sectors does not fully benefit the Ghanaian economy, he said.

Speaking at the 2025 National Economic Dialogue, Mr. Mahama noted the need for Ghanaians to take a leading role in the extraction and exploitation of resources such as gold which have long been key to the nation’s economy.

“There must be increased indigenous participation in the exploitation of our natural resources,” Mr. Mahama declared. “Ghana must earn more from its natural resource endowment in order to play a role in prosperity for all,” the president declared.

Ghana’s extractive sector, particularly mining, significantly contributes to the nation’s economy; however, local participation in this remains low.

In 2023, the country produced approximately 4.2 million ounces of gold, accounting for about 4 percent of the world’s total output.

This production led to mineral revenues of US$5.9billion, with mining companies repatriating over US$4.2billion into the country through commercial banks and the Bank of Ghana, representing 71.3% of total mineral revenue for the year.

Additionally, Ghana’s mineral export receipts improved from US$6.8billion in 2022 to US$7.8billion in 2023, marking a 15 percent revenue increase attributed to the growth in export earnings from all minerals except manganese.

Gold exports alone accounted for US$9.58billion as of October 2024, representing more than half the total export earnings of US$16.5billion.

The president’s remarks come as the nation grapples with a severe economic crisis marked by elevated inflation, high unemployment and declining foreign investment.

Mr. Mahama’s call for greater domestic involvement in the extractive industries aligns with his broader vision of transitioning the country from a raw material exporter to a value-added industrialised economy.

He stressed that the country’s over-reliance on exporting unprocessed resources has left it vulnerable to global price fluctuations and external shocks.

“It’s time to transition into a value-added industrialised economy that creates jobs, boosts exports and reduces our reliance on imports,” he said.

The president’s speech also touched on a need for structural reforms to unlock the private sector’s potential and drive job creation.

Similarly, the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) last week also called for a fundamental shift in Ghana’s approach to managing its external sector, urging government to reconsider the ownership structure of Ghana’s two largest exports – gold and oil – to ensure that more foreign exchange earnings remain within the economy.

In it’s recommendations ahead of the 2025 budget presentation in parliament this month, the policy think-tank stated that despite the country’s consistent trade surpluses in recent years, the cedi has continued to depreciate sharply -highlighting a structural weakness in the country’s balance of payments.

IFS recommended a restructuring of the extractive sector ownership model. The think-tank proposes two key strategies: increasing state participation in gold and oil production through joint ventures or adopting production-sharing agreements, which would allow government to retain a larger share of export revenues.

“Taking commanding interests in gold and oil through joint ventures or production-sharing agreements is not just an economic necessity; it is a strategic move to secure Ghana’s financial stability,” Dr. Boakye stated.

“This approach will generate more fiscal revenue for government while also ensuring that a substantial portion of foreign exchange earnings remains within the country to support the cedi.”

IFS warns that without such reforms, the nation will remain vulnerable to currency volatility and economic crises. The country’s dependence on external borrowing to manage exchange rate fluctuations has repeatedly led to unsustainable debt accumulation, triggering fiscal distress.

The policy think-tank argued that the current crisis, which began in 2022, is a direct result of this pattern.

Data from the Bank of Ghana shows that between 2017 and 2023 the country recorded positive trade balances each year, with total merchandise exports rising from an average of US$14.8billion between 2017 and 2019 to US$17.1billion between 2022 and 2023.

However, this increase did not translate into exchange rate stability. Instead, the cedi’s depreciation rate surged from an annual average of 8.7 percent between 2017 and 2019 to 28.9 percent in the 2022-2023 period.

The reason, according to IFS, lies in the extractive sector’s ownership structure .

Baba Yara, Legon Sports Stadium, and other venues declared Unfit for league matches

0

Five Ghana Premier League clubs have been affected after their home venues were deemed unsuitable for matches following an inspection by the safety and security committee.

Among the major venues affected are the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, home of Asante Kotoko, and the Legon Sports Stadium, used by Accra Hearts of Oak.

Other venues declared unfit for matches include Golden City Park (Berekum Chelsea), AAK Ampain Stadium (Basake Holy Stars), and Wenchi Sports Stadium (Young Apostles).

The Club Lincensing committee’s decision is based on safety and security concerns, as the Ghana Football Association (GFA) continues its effort to enhance the matchday experience and ensure the protection of players, officials, and fans.

With these stadiums unavailable, the affected clubs may have to look for alternative venues to host their home games until the necessary improvements are made.

The Ghana Premier League, which went on an abrupt break, will resume with Matchday 23 on the weekend of Friday, March 7 to Monday, March 10, 2025, according to the GFA.

The resumption is subject to the safety and security assurance inspection of all venues currently being undertaken by the GFA and the Ministry for Sports and Recreation.

We Are Back To Dumsor – Minority

0

The Minority in Parliament has accused the government of plunging the country back into the dreaded power crisis, commonly known as “dumsor,” which has left businesses and households struggling.

They argued that the current erratic power supply is reminiscent of the severe energy crisis Ghanaians endured between 2011 and 2016 under the same administration.

Addressing the media in Parliament yesterday, the Minority expressed disappointment in President Mahama’s recent promise to fix the power challenges, stating that similar assurances in the past yielded no results.

Former Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, said even the creation of a separate Ministry of Power under Mahama’s leadership did not alleviate the situation, ultimately leading to the dismissal of the then-Minister for Power in 2015.

He also recalled that in 2016, despite ongoing power outages, the government avoided issuing a load-shedding timetable, instead blaming interruptions on maintenance issues and “localised faults.”

The Minority contended that history is repeating itself, as businesses and individuals are once again being forced to rely on costly alternatives like generators to keep operations running.

“Mr. President, you did not fix dumsor as you claimed in your address. Your record on dumsor is abysmal, unlike your predecessor, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who kept the lights on,” the Minority asserted.

They warned that the worsening power situation could have dire consequences for small businesses such as hair salons, welders, dressmakers, and other tradespeople who depend on electricity for their daily earnings.

According to Dr. Adam, many have already reported significant financial losses due to the ongoing outages.

In light of the crisis, the Minority called on the government to be transparent and release a load-shedding timetable to enable businesses and individuals to plan accordingly and mitigate the economic impact.

Declining Oil Production

Shifting focus to the petroleum sector, the Minority blamed the decline in crude oil production on poor contractual decisions made during President Mahama’s previous tenure.

They stated that contracts were awarded to 13 companies, most of which lacked the financial and technical capacity to develop Ghana’s oil resources effectively.

However, they praised the Akufo-Addo administration’s efforts between 2018 and 2022, which they said resulted in seven new oil and gas discoveries due to aggressive reserve replacement measures.

These include Pecan South-East (2018) – Estimated at 10 million barrels of oil; Nyankom-1X (2019) – Estimated at 168 million barrels of oil; Afina-1X (2019) – Estimated between 150-300 million barrels of oil; Akoma-1X (2022) – Estimated between 500-700 million barrels of oil; Aprokuma-1X (2022) – Volume yet to be determined; and Eni’s Aprokuma-1X – A double discovery in the Albian and Cenomanian formations.

The Minority noted that the COVID-19 pandemic had slowed down the appraisal of these discoveries.

To mitigate the impact, the NPP government introduced policy incentives and framework amendments to support industry players.

This, they argued, contradicts claims by President Mahama that the NPP government created a “hostile business climate and excessive political interference” in the petroleum sector.

Additionally, the Minority highlighted the Jubilee South-East project, which came on stream in September 2023, adding 30,000 barrels of oil per day and boosting total production from the Jubilee Field to 100,000 barrels per day.

Economic Growth and Power Crisis

The Minority also expressed concern that the ongoing power crisis, or dumsor, could undermine the economic turnaround achieved in 2024.

They warned that several factors could hinder economic growth in the first quarter of 2025, including unreliable power supply, and stalled government projects, with contractors left unpaid despite Parliament approving GH¢68 billion for the government to spend in the first quarter of 2025.

The Minority argued that despite significant revenue at the government’s disposal—including a GH¢5 billion buffer, GH¢8.7 billion collected by the Ghana Revenue Authority in January 2025, and approximately GH¢67 billion borrowed in less than two months—many government projects remain halted, leading to job losses among young Ghanaians.

They called on the government to adopt a new economic management strategy to prevent further setbacks and ensure sustained economic growth.

Minority vows to block new or increased taxes

0

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has strongly opposed any attempt by the government to introduce new taxes or increase existing ones, warning that such measures will further burden Ghanaians and stifle economic growth.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, March 3, former finance minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam criticized the government’s ambitious tax revenue target of GH¢200 billion for the year, calling it unrealistic given the current state of the economy.

A Fusion of Elegance and Comfort

I Will petition the diplomatic community in Ghana over threat on my life from NDC- Okatakyie Afrifa

0

Okatakyire Afrifa Mensah, the host of For the Records, says he will petition the diplomatic community in Ghana over what he described as threats on his life by leading members of the President John Dramani Mahama-led administration.

The media broadcaster and personality made serious allegations against the National Security, accusing them of employing intimidating tactics. In a post on his Facebook wall, Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah claimed that he received intelligence informing him that National Security operatives had stormed the country’s airport looking for him.

According to him, he had no knowledge of the intentions behind the search for him, by the National Security operatives, particularly at the Airport.

Speaking on his For the Records show, Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah stated that his lawyers would inform the diplomatic community in Ghana about the threat on his life.

He mentioned that such intimidating tactics will not cowed him into silence, expressing his readiness to face any challenge that comes his way as he embarks on a desperate mission to demand good governance from the John Dramani Mahama-led administration.

He stressed that in this day and age, such archaic tactics should not be deployed by a government to silence critics.

“I will petition the diplomatic community in Ghana over the threat on my life from the NDC and John Mahama’s government led by Jakpa,” he said.

Meanwhile, National Security has not officially commented on the allegations by Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah. The loud silence of the National Security is worrying to sections of the public who want the respected institution to set the records straight.

A chemist-engineer’s perspective on innovation in the energy sector

0

Engineering is more than a profession—it is the backbone of modern civilization. As we commemorate the International Day of Engineering, it is an opportunity to reflect on the critical role engineers play in shaping the world’s infrastructure, particularly in the energy sector. From ensuring the reliability of power generation to pioneering sustainable solutions, engineering remains a driving force for progress.

As a chemist on the Powership and an engineer, my role is both dynamic and essential. Chemistry and engineering are deeply intertwined in power generation, from fuel quality optimization to environmental compliance and efficiency enhancement. At Karpowership Ghana, we leverage cutting-edge technology to ensure that our floating power plants operate at peak performance while maintaining environmental sustainability.

The Intersection of Chemistry and Engineering in Power Generation

The power sector is evolving rapidly, requiring engineers to blend scientific principles with practical application. As a chemist-engineer, I oversee fuel quality analysis, water treatment processes, and emissions control, ensuring compliance with international environmental standards. These aspects are critical in maintaining operational efficiency and reducing our environmental footprint.

Beyond technical expertise, engineering in the energy sector demands resilience, adaptability, and continuous innovation. Floating power plants, like those operated by Karpowership, are a testament to engineering ingenuity—bringing reliable, affordable, and cleaner energy solutions to communities worldwide. My role allows me to bridge the gap between chemical sciences and engineering principles, ensuring that the fuel we use is optimized for efficiency and sustainability.

Women in Engineering: Breaking Barriers and Leading Change

While engineering has traditionally been a male-dominated field, women are increasingly making strides, contributing their expertise, and driving impactful change. As a female engineer on the Powership, I take pride in representing both my profession and my company. Karpowership Ghana promotes an inclusive work environment that values diversity and empowers women to take on leadership roles in technical fields.

Through mentorship and continuous professional development, we can inspire the next generation of female engineers. Young girls aspiring to enter STEM careers should be encouraged and given the right resources to pursue their dreams. My journey in engineering is proof that with determination, passion, and the right support, women can thrive in technical roles and contribute meaningfully to industry advancements.

Engineering a Sustainable Future

The global energy landscape is shifting towards sustainability, and engineers play a pivotal role in this transition. At Karpowership, we are committed to exploring cleaner energy alternatives and enhancing operational efficiencies. Innovation in energy storage, fuel technology, and emissions management will define the future of power generation, and engineers must lead the way.

On this International Day of Engineering, I celebrate not only my journey but the collective efforts of engineers worldwide who dedicate their expertise to building a more sustainable future. As we look ahead, let us continue to innovate, inspire, and push the boundaries of what is possible in engineering.

Conclusion

Engineering is a catalyst for progress, and the energy sector remains one of its most critical frontiers. At Karpowership Ghana, we are proud to be at the forefront of energy innovation, ensuring that our floating power solutions deliver reliable electricity to millions. As a chemist-engineer, I am honoured to contribute to this mission and to be a part of an organization that values excellence, sustainability, and inclusivity.

To all aspiring engineers, especially young women looking to break into the field—keep pushing forward, keep innovating, and keep believing in your ability to change the world.

Happy International Day of Engineering!

Social Media taunts NPP with NAPO’s ‘fix your own timetable’ comment

0

Dr. Amin Adam led the Minority Caucus to demand a load-shedding timetable Dr. Amin Adam led the Minority Caucus to demand a load-shedding timetable

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has faced significant backlash from some Ghanaian social media users following their request for the incumbent government to publish a load-shedding timetable.

During a press briefing on what they referred to as the ‘True State of the Nation Address’ on March 3, 2025, the Minority, led by former Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adams, accused the government of mismanaging the country’s power situation.

The Minority argued that the frequent power outages have heightened uncertainties regarding the country’s economic growth prospects.

“The government’s handling of the power situation has increased uncertainty about the economic growth prospects this year. The promises by the president in his address to the nation to fix the current ‘dumsor’ cannot be different from those he made during the four years of ‘dumsor’ endured by Ghanaians between the end of 2011 and 2016,” the Minority said.

They continued to state; “Mr. President, you did not fix ‘dumsor’ as you claimed in your address. Your record on ‘dumsor’ is abysmal, unlike your predecessor, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who kept the lights on.

“… To ameliorate the impact of these erratic power supplies, we the Mighty Minority call on the government to publish a load-shedding timetable to help people and businesses plan effectively to offset some of the losses the economy is currently suffering from.”

However, the Minority’s demand, which aimed to prompt the government to take immediate action in resolving the power issues, seems to have backfired, at least, largely online.

Critics have pointed out that when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was the Majority caucus, they dismissed similar calls from Ghanaians for a load-shedding timetable.

These critics specifically referenced an interview with the former Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, in March 2024, in which he responded to calls for a load-shedding timetable by telling those requesting it to provide the timetable themselves.

Critics have questioned the moral authority of the Minority to make such demands of the government, pointing out that they failed to address the power crisis when they had the opportunity.

They have highlighted what they perceive as the hypocritical nature of politicians, who, despite not responding to the public’s concerns in the past, are now calling for immediate action.

What NAPO said in 2024

The former Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, suggested that those asking for a timetable for the erratic power outages ongoing in the country, at the time, should provide it themselves.

In what could be termed as a cheeky answer to a question posed by a journalist, in a video shared by JoyNews on X, the minister stated that he did not see the need for any timetable when the power distributor said what was happening in the country did not need one.

“Ask those who want it to bring it, if there is. I haven’t seen any timetable,” he stated.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh had earlier denied that the country had returned to the days of ‘dumsor,’ as what the erratic power supply in the country under John Dramani Mahama was referred to.

“If we are comparing four years, four years, NPP administration energy sector is 300 times better than John Mahama… it’s far much better than John Mahama ever did…

“I’ve promised you that we are going to work on it and it’s not a work that is a single event; it’s a process, and we’ll continue to work on it for the energy sector to become better,” he stated.

In what capacity is Kwesi Pratt travelling with Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang? P.K Sarpong Quizzes

0

Popular writer for the opposition New Patriotic Party, P.K Sarpong, has questioned why Mr Kwesi Pratt Junior has been travelling with the Vice President, Madam Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.

Mr Kwesi Pratt Junior, the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, is captured in a picture with Madam Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and his daughter, Ama Pratt, allegedly on an official trip.

Ama Pratt is an Aide to the Second Lady of the country, but his father’s presence around the Office of the Vice President is what has been a cause of worry for P.K Sarpong.

Mr Kwesi Pratt Junior is a renowned journalist who has been active in the political landscape of the country for a very long time. He has been very critical of governments over the years, demanding good governance for the people of the country.

Despite his exploits in the political arena of the country, he has not been officially announced as a member of the Vice President’s team, giving the likes of P.K Sarpong a cause to question his capacity to join Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s delegation during official trips.

“In what capacity is Kwesi Pratt travelling with Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, the Vice President of the Republic? Maybe he is a special assistant to his daughter, Ama Pratt,” he posted.

This is not the first time P.K Sarpong expressed worry about the closeness of Mr Kwesi Pratt to the Office of the Vice President. He once shared a photo of Mr Kwesi Pratt as part of the Vice President’s delegation that met with a Chinese team that visited the country, alleging that he had been appointed as the Communications director of the Second Lady.

Vice President commends 2025 diaspora property expo organisers

0

Efforts by organisers of Diaspora Property Expo 2025 (DPE2025) to attract investment to Ghana, particularly in the real estate sector, have been commended by Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

The DPE2025 is scheduled to take place from 21st to 23rd March in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to connect Ghanaian real estate developers with diaspora investors from the USA and Canada.

A meeting was held at the Vice President’s office in Cantonments, Accra, with a team representing the DPE2025 organisers, during which the importance of promoting the expo to encourage direct investments that could spur economic growth and infrastructure development in Ghana was emphasised.

The DPE2025 delegation included Mr. Thomas Young, President of the World Trade Center in Philadelphia, who was visiting Ghana ahead of the expo.

Other representatives present on behalf of DPE2025 included Nana Kwesi Atomu II of Atomu Africa Development, Sidney Justin Tehoda, Verus Nartey, Nana Obokese, CEO of Nkunim Diaspora City, and other representatives from Diaspora Property Investment Limited.

Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Political Advisor, Professor Theresa Ennin, Special Aide, and Maame Ama Pratt, Press Secretary, accompanied the Vice President during the meeting.

The DPE2025 is being organised by Diaspora Property Investment Ltd, Made in Ghana Consulting Ltd, the Ghana Real Estate Developers Association (GREDA), World Trade Centre Philadelphia, Nkunim Diaspora City in Mankesim, and Atomu Africa Development Services.

The event is being held in partnership with institutions such as the Ministry of Works, Housing, and Water Resources, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ghana Embassy in Washington DC, the office of Representative Amen Brown of Pennsylvania, and the office of the Mayor of Philadelphia.

Around 25 exhibitors from various sectors of the real estate and property market in Ghana have been registered to participate in the inaugural edition of the DPE, which will be held at 1735 Market Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The importance of increasing Ghana’s exports to the United States, particularly to the city of Philadelphia, was highlighted by the Vice President.

This statement was in line with comments previously made by Mr. Thomas Young, who indicated that Pennsylvania is exploring broader economic opportunities beyond the expo to foster long-term partnerships for the mutual benefit of both Ghana and the United States.

Overall, the meeting was deemed productive, with both sides stressing the importance of strengthening trade and investment ties between the two countries through DPE2025 and other joint ventures.

3 times Minority MPs have staged boycotts of public events post-election

0

Some members of the Minority Caucus of the New Patriotic Party Some members of the Minority Caucus of the New Patriotic Party

The Minority Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament appears to be gradually making a mark in the minds of ordinary Ghanaians through some of their decisions.

Despite having a fraction of parliamentary presence than initially anticipated, which many believed would render them ineffective or silent, they have defied all odds and expectations.

While some argue that the reduced number of NPP seats in Parliament would hinder their influence on state affairs and decision-making, the caucus, true to their self-description as the ‘Mighty Minority,’ continues to be a formidable opponent in certain instances.

Notable among such instances have been their boycotts of key events. In, as much as, many will argue that their boycotts may not necessarily affect business in the grand scheme of affairs, their every move, one way or the other, does not represent the interests of the people they represent in Parliament.

As a reflection on this, here are three occasions the NPP has boycotted state events since the commencement of the 9th Parliament of Ghana.

Parliamentary Orientation

The Minority Caucus opted to boycott a three-day orientation program organised for members of the 9th Parliament.

They cited concerns over the program’s cost and the lack of engagement with them regarding the venue selection process as their reason.

Additionally, they expressed the view that the choice of venue, the Volta Serene Hotel, was politically motivated.

This decision has sparked criticism from the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, who has described their reasons as ‘totally unacceptable.’

According to him, politicians must prioritise the national interest and to rise above their political differences.

Probe into Chaos During Vetting

The Minority Caucus once again became a subject of public discussions when they refused to appear before the ad-hoc committee investigating the chaotic events that occurred in Parliament during the vetting of certain ministerial nominees.

They stated they would only participate once the Speaker of Parliament addressed concerns of bias raised against the ad-hoc committee chairman, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah.

They further accused the Speaker of Parliament of acting illegally in establishing the ad-hoc committee, arguing that under the Standing Orders of Parliament, the Speaker does not have the authority to unilaterally set up such a committee.

The Minority argued that the proper procedure for constituting such a committee requires a motion to be raised by a leader from either side of the House, seconded by the members, and subsequently approved by the Speaker.

Despite these claims, the Minority did not participate in any of the proceedings.

National Economic Forum

The Minority staged a no-show at the National Economic Forum despite an invitation from President John Dramani Mahama requesting for their participation.

The two-day dialogue, led by President John Dramani Mahama, aims to tackle Ghana’s economic challenges and chart a course for sustainable growth under the theme “Resetting Ghana: Building the Economy We Want Together.”

The dialogue further seeks to adopt the approach of engaging all stakeholders in an inclusive discussion on economic policies and reforms.

During the SONA on February 27, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama made a passionate appeal to members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to take part in the upcoming National Economic Forum.

Ghana’s economic future: A call to action

0

Today, Ghana stands at a critical juncture in its economic journey. As we gather for the National Economic Dialogue, we are reminded that our collective unity of purpose is the key to unlocking a brighter future for all citizens.

The first National Economic Dialogue in over a decade marks a pivotal moment in our nation’s history. It is an opportunity to reflect on our economic reality, address pressing challenges and chart a course towards a more prosperous future.

We face significant economic puzzles, including severe currency depreciation, hyperinflation and rising fuel and electricity prices.

However, with the collective expertise and experience gathered at the two day dialogue, we can drive structural reforms and a transformation agenda to reset our economy.

We have had the benefit of such gatherings. There was the Senchi Accord in 2015 which brought together same actors if not similar.

A decade afterwards, we are back to the same issues, government over-boated expenditure, high interest rates, high unemployment rates, an economy that only serves a few rather than the majority.

As the Graphic Business had often time quoted former President Rawlings “our problem is not knowing what to do but in doing what we know we should do”.

While we seem to have all the solutions for economic emancipation (especially when we are out of office), political actors seem to have a different orientation when they have the power to influence the change we want and to change the cause of history.

Listening to the President and Finance Minister, one is convinced they know what our challenges are and understand the implications of not doing anything radical that will have dire implications for the economy.

In other words, in resetting the economy, we cannot have the conventional way of “all talk and no action”.

It will require not just a shift from the old political mindset of throwing the bare bones to the citizenry to chew on while feeding fat on the very people who trust their hopes in the political class to turn their fortunes around.

Bold and decisive actions will require critical thinking and innovative ideas that create opportunities for everyone not just a few.

If the recent demonstrations in and around party offices and some state agencies where the youthful population are crying out for jobs just two months into the office of a new government is anything to go by, it goes without saying that the patience of the voting public, especially the youth is growing thinner.

Therefore, we must act with dispatch and with sincerity. The Graphic Business believes that the government has taken key steps towards recovery which includes fiscal discipline and good governance.

The streamlining of the size of government: Reducing the number of ministers from 123 to 60, significant reductions for the Office of the President and prohibition of first-class travel for all government officials.

These actions demonstrate the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability and good governance. These are all good optics and we wait to see how these match with actionable steps to redeem the economy.

As we embark on the development of our medium-term plans, commencing with the forthcoming budget on March 11, we must acknowledge the significant toll borne by every Ghanaian.

We must work together to stem the bleeding and place our economy back on the right trajectory.

This will require significant sacrifice from all of us. However, with our collective unity of purpose and commitment to transparency, accountability and good governance, we can overcome the challenges ahead and secure a prosperous future for all Ghanaians.

As we move forward, let us draw inspiration from the Finance Minister’s statement, “adwen nyi baako fo tiri mu” – knowledge does not reside in the head of one person. Together, this country can achieve greatness.

I suspect my ‘gay’ boss drugged and slept with me

0

File photo of a worried man File photo of a worried man

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’m a 26-year-old gentleman who works in a prestigious company. I worked as the Personal Assistant to the Managing Director, and my job required me to accompany him everywhere, even to regional conferences.

On one occasion, he mentioned a huge contract he needed to sign in Kumasi.

He booked two rooms, one for himself and one for me. Every night, he would call me to his room to go over the report I had prepared, plan the next day’s activities, and sometimes, I would even have to iron his clothes for the following day.

I usually left his room around 2 or 3 a.m. During these late-night meetings, we often drank alcohol, since we had both taken long naps earlier, and he claimed it helped keep us alert.

One particular night, after drinking a wine he had given me, I began feeling extremely dizzy and weak. He suggested I rest on his bed for a while.

I told him I felt uncomfortable, like I couldn’t breathe, and I was sweating heavily.

He helped me remove my top, and at that point, I was too weak to even open my eyes.

I woke up the next morning completely naked on his bed and I noticed a strange feeling in my thighs, like that of semen. By the time I woke up, he was already in the shower.

I quietly got dressed and left his room. We barely spoke that day, only exchanging a few words about work. After we were done with the contract signing, we had to return to Accra.

He eventually dropped me off at home and nothing more was said. Mind you, my boss is 40 years old, he is married with three kids. I felt it was disrespectful to ask him outright if he had touched me or if I had been drugged.

A lot of thoughts were racing through my mind, and moreover, I was expecting him to say something to me.

I couldn’t make sense of it. I was literally naked in his bed and as a guy, I was in shock and disbelief. This man doesn’t look like someone who can be intimate with his fellow gender because he looks so responsible.

I questioned myself for days, trying to figure out what happened that night. Eventually, I decided to quit the job and maybe he will talk to me about it.

He asked why I quit and I told him I’m no more comfortable in the working environment. He sighed and I left.

I don’t know if I should confront him about it or I should let it go. I remember waking up that day with so much pain in my anus but I wouldn’t have thought he would do something like that to me until I saw the sperm on my thigh.

I’m scared to talk to someone about this and I can’t just forget about it too. What should I do?

Legon Cities, Hearts of Oak in trouble after GFA banned University of Ghana Sports Stadium

0

The Communications Director of Accra Hearts of Oak, Kwame Opare Addo, has disclosed that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) have banned the team and Legon Cities from using the University of Ghana Sports Stadium for official football matches.

He explained that the GFA alluded to the fact that the stadium’s standards do not meet the newly instituted safety and security measures.

The communications director further highlighted the poor nature of the pitch and the safety zones where buses park, which are not up to the required standard.

Speaking in an interview with Happy FM, Opare Addo noted that due to the safety concerns with the stadium, they are compelled to look for alternative venues for GPL matches.

“Thursday evening, we received information that, per the enhanced safety and security measures, Legon Stadium does not meet the required standards, and as such, we cannot play there.

“The communication states that the pitch is undulating, and the safety and security zones, from where the buses park to the dressing rooms, are deemed not secure enough. Because of that, they have ruled the venue unavailable,” he said.

It will be recalled that, following the demise of staunch Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, well-known as Pooley, strict protocols are being implemented by the GFA to safeguard lives.

President of the GFA, Kurt Okraku, vowed to ensure that all match venues were in line with the enhanced safety protocols to prevent such misfortunes in the future.

For everyday wear, casual outfits are the go-to choice. A classic combination of a well-fitted t-shirt or polo shirt paired with denim jeans or shorts is both comfortable and stylish. T-shirts with cool graphic prints, stripes, or bold colors are popular among young boys, adding a playful touch to their look. Meanwhile, comfortable sneakers or slip-on shoes complete the casual outfit, offering both style and ease of movement for active boys.

For more formal occasions, boys’ outfits tend to include dress shirts, trousers, and blazers. A button-up shirt paired with a pair of dress trousers or chinos exudes a polished look, perfect for family events, school functions, or parties. A well-fitted blazer or vest can add an extra layer of sophistication, making the outfit suitable for weddings, formal dinners, or other special occasions. To complete the look, boys can wear leather shoes or loafers, which add a refined touch.

For outdoor or active wear, sportswear plays a crucial role. Boys often choose tracksuits, hoodies, or athletic shorts for sports or outdoor activities. These outfits are designed for flexibility and comfort, making them ideal for playing sports, running, or other energetic activities. Athletic shoes with good support are an essential part of sportswear to ensure comfort during physical activities.

In conclusion, the variety of outfits available for boys today ensures that they can express their style while also prioritizing comfort and functionality. Whether it’s a casual look for school, a formal ensemble for a special event, or active wear for play, boys’ outfits are versatile and designed to suit every occasion. The key is finding the right balance of style, comfort, and practicality to keep boys feeling confident and comfortable throughout the day.
