Akwaaba UK CEO ‘clashes’ with Stonebwoy’s manager

0

CEO of Akwaaba UK Dennis Tawiah (L) and Stonebwoy's manager, Chief Stylz (R) CEO of Akwaaba UK Dennis Tawiah (L) and Stonebwoy’s manager, Chief Stylz (R)

Dennis Tawiah, the CEO of Akwaaba UK, has refuted claims by Stonebwoy’s manager, Chief Stylz, that they intend to sabotage the dancehall musician’s upcoming album tour in the UK.

During a phone-in session on Hitz FM while making his points clear, Tawiah engaged in a heated argument and eventual outburst with Chief Stylz, who was also ‘phoned in’ at the same time.

One would recall that Stonebwoy’s manager, while making the sabotage allegations, stated that his team had booked the UK album tour for March 8th way back in October, only to find out in January that Akwaaba UK had also scheduled an Independence concert for the same day.

However, addressing these claims, the Akwaaba UK CEO argued that his team had booked their concert for March 8, long before Stonebwoy announced the date for his album tour.

“Do you know when I booked the O2 Indigo? It was four months before the Ghana Independence. So if you say you came with an announcement in October, that is nothing. The booking and payment were made on August 24, 2024, but the initial contract was made with O2 on May 4, 2024, after Medikal’s show. If Chief is sitting there talking about things he has no facts about, I would send him the reason why it got to the word ‘sabotage’… They should be very careful,” he said.

Chief Stylz still insisted that his team was the first to book the said date,”As for the inquiry as to who booked the venue for the concert, everybody has it. I can also bring an email as to when the inquiry and booking went to Live Nation, which was way earlier than the date he mentioned. When it’s time for us to put all these out, we will.”

Then, the Akwaaba UK CEO flared up, threatening to publicly disclose the conversation that took place between their camp and Stonebwoy’s team.

“He and Stonebwoy should go to a studio anywhere, and I would show you guys what all these are about. The truth must be told. Ask Stonebwoy about who supported him in all his shows in the UK, including the ones that were cancelled,” he stated.

Stonebwoy’s manager, not rubbishing the fact that they have been recieving help from Akwaaba UK regarding concerts in the UK, said, “I am well aware of the role you have been playing, not just in the life of Stonebwoy but in all Ghanaian acts. This issue popped up because anytime we want to do an event in the UK, we reach out to our Ghanaian people, and that was how we got to know what was happening.”

Dennis Tawiah, unwilling to let go of the sabotage allegations made against his team, further argued that Stonebwoy and his team only reached out to him January 2025 about the album tour and their ‘8th March’ date.

“Chief, you and Stonebwoy contacted me on January 4, 2025… I have got the evidence. That was when Stonebwoy came to see me. I had already booked my venue a long time ago. I have been organising Ghana Independence since 1998,” he established.

Airing of state events on Woezor TV sparks fury among Ghanaians on social media

0

Woezor TV has come under discussions following its broadcast of state events Woezor TV has come under discussions following its broadcast of state events

Some Ghanaians have raised concerns about the seeming preference being given to privately-owned media station, Woezor TV over state broadcaster, Ghana Television relative to the broadcast of national events.

The concerns focus on the observation that since the arrival of the John Dramani Mahama government, the role of GTV as the primary broadcaster of key national events, particularly from the Jubilee House is being usurped by Woezor TV.

GTV, known for producing state events and securing broadcasting rights for other media stations in the country, now seems to be sidelined. This development has sparked discussions among Ghanaian netizens.

Critics have asserted that the emerging dominance of Woezor TV, which has led to the social media handles of the presidency broadcasting live events with the Woezor logo, does not bode well for the image of the country. They argue that Woezor TV, being a private entity, should not be given exclusive rights to broadcast government events, as it is not a state broadcaster.

In response to these concerns, Stan Xoese Dogbe, the Director of Operations at the Presidency, posted a lengthy write-up on Facebook on February 19, 2025.

He explained that the privately owned media station has been the official broadcaster of the NDC since their time in opposition, a role it continues to fulfill.

He questioned the motives behind the public outcry regarding the station taking over the position traditionally held by GTV, emphasizing that no authority has prevented GTV from taking a live feed from the presidency.

According to him, he sees no wrongdoing if GTV picks a live feed from Woezor TV to broadcast. He instead suggested that a collaborative relationship should exist among all media platforms in the country, as they all share the same goal of informing the public, rather than engaging in unhealthy competition.

Wading into the controversy, investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni pointed out that other media stations, including GTV, having unfettered access to broadcast or take feeds from the presidency should not be an issue. However, he stressed that the president’s social media accounts broadcasting with Woezor TV’s logo create a significant conflict of interest.

He explained this by stating that Stan Dogbe, the Director of Operations at the presidency, being the owner of the media channel, holds a position that gives him the potential to influence which station provides official live feeds for presidential and national events. This, he argued, could lead to controversies, even if Dogbe does not actively exercise that influence.

Manasseh therefore advised Dogbe to avoid such controversies, as they could undermine his work at the presidency and overshadow his role.

The inside story of how Nyantakyi’s late-night call swayed massive votes for Kurt Okraku in GFA elections

0

Former President of the GFA, Kwesi Nyantakyi(L) and President of the GFA Kurt Okraku (R) Former President of the GFA, Kwesi Nyantakyi(L) and President of the GFA Kurt Okraku (R)

The 2019 Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidential election was a fiercely contested race, with George Afriyie and Kurt Okraku emerging as the top contenders.

However, a shocking twist has been revealed, with allegations that a single phone call from former GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi swayed the election in Okraku’s favour.

Okraku won the GFA presidential election in 2019 after three rounds of voting. In the first round, Okraku secured 44 votes, narrowly edging out George Afriyie, who received 40 votes.

In the second round, Okraku led with 59 votes but fell just short of the required majority of 50% +1, forcing a third round. After Afriyie withdrew, Okraku won the final round unchallenged with 93 votes.

Despite conceding defeat, Afriyie has since disclosed what he believes was the decisive factor in his loss, blaming Nyantakyi for influencing the outcome.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, Afriyie claimed he was in a strong position to win until Nyantakyi’s last-minute intervention changed the course of the election.

“Did you hear what Mr. Kwesi Nyantakyi said recently? He revealed that on the night before the elections, someone called him and told him he must help Kurt. He said that, at the time, Kurt had not spoken to him, but immediately after that call ended, Kurt reached out to him,” Afriyie stated.

“Nyantakyi then rushed to his house and summoned 60 delegates, instructing them to vote for Kurt. Some of them even admitted that before receiving his call, they had planned to vote for another candidate. He influenced 60 out of 123 delegates. This is a man who had been banned from football,” he recalled.

Afriyie further suggested that, despite the official results, he still feels he won the election, citing Nyantakyi’s influence in Ghanaian football as a crucial factor in the outcome.

“I won the elections, at least that’s how I see it. If a night before such a crucial election, Mr. Nyantakyi, who we all know played a major role in Ghanaian football, intervened despite being banned, then his influence cannot be ignored. That last-minute lobbying happened, and I still managed to get 40 votes while Kurt got 44. You cannot discount Nyantakyi’s 13 years in football,” he added.

Okraku’s tenure, however, has been marred by setbacks, including Ghana’s back-to-back group-stage exits at AFCON 2021 and 2023, as well as the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for AFCON 2025.

‘Grave robbers took my daughter’s cross and my mother’s twice’

0

Grave after grave after grave in this cemetery in the eastern Tanzanian city of Morogoro has been vandalised.

In some, there is a gap where a metal crucifix once stood, in others the religious symbol is bent as thieves, who were hoping sell it to scrap merchants, tried and failed to remove it.

More than 250 have been targeted in one small section of the Kola Municipal Cemetery alone.

The crimes mostly happen at night when there is no security and there are no cemetery workers around.

They have left families devastated and the sites desecrated, sparking anger.

For more than two decades, Pudensiana Chumbi has been going to the cemetery about once a month to visit the graves of her daughter and mother – and to her distress both have been desecrated over the last few years, multiple times.

The first to be targeted was the grave of her mother who died in 2000.

A few months after the family had managed to save up to replace the stolen cross in late 2021, her daughter’s grave was damaged. It was nearby and a little older – her daughter had died in 1997 aged 15.

Before Ms Chumbi could decide to fix her daughter’s cross, to her horror, the new cross on her mother’s grave was stolen.

In a quandary about what to do next, she felt metal was not an option when it came to replacing her daughter’s cross.

“This is my child’s grave – my fourth child,” she said pointing towards the concrete cross.

The theft of crosses and markers from graves has become a disturbing trend in this part of Tanzania, driven by the rising demand for scrap metal.

“The people doing this are cursed because everyone is sad about what is going on,” Ms Chumbi tells the BBC.

“There are some young men who now demand payment to guard graves overnight, especially those with tiles.”

Tiles can also be sold on for people to use as decorations in their home.

Augustine Remmy, Ms Chumbi’s brother, says it is upsetting for the whole community.

“This is too bad… when these areas that deserve respect are subjected to such bad acts, it truly hurts a lot,” he tells the BBC.

The rash of thefts reflects a desperation among some to make some money that overrides ethical concerns about damaging sacred sites.

The criminals can earn between 700 and 870 Tanzanian shillings ($0.27-$0.34; £0.22-£0.28) per kilogramme.

It is not a huge amount of money but it can be enough to pay for a plate of food from a vendor or some locally brewed alcohol.

“Metal dealers often buy without asking questions,” says one man who admitted to the BBC that he had stolen crosses from a cemetery to sell on the scrap metal market.

Agreeing to speak on condition of anonymity, he describes how the thieves would first go to welders who cut the crosses into pieces before taking them to the scrap merchants.

The merchants are faced with the choice of buying cheaper stolen goods or abiding by the law.

Izire Ramadhani, a dealer in Morogoro city centre, recalls how in 2023 he, along with some other scrap merchants, caught someone trying to sell a stolen cross and reported him to the authorities.

“In the past, they used to bring us crosses. But then we took one of them to the police, and later he was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison,” Mr Ramadhani tells the BBC.

He says this led to a reduction in the theft of crosses, although there has been a recent increase.

Mr Ramadhani insists that he does not buy stolen goods.

“If a cross is brought here, the person coming to sell to us will be in trouble because we will take him to the police.”

Thieves have also begun targeting other grave markers like tiles and marble decorations, which can easily be sold on to other buyers.

Dr Ndimile Kilatu, Morogoro’s health officer, said the city’s authorities planned to improve cemetery security by introducing fences and guards but warned that “this requires resources and time.

“It is not something that we can do today or tomorrow.”

He also mentioned initiatives to educate scrap metal dealers about the materials that should not be bought, such as grave markers and railway components.

Tanzania’s government has also pledged to regulate the scrap metal industry.

Deputy Prime Minister Dotto Biteko has emphasised the need for licensed businesses to adhere to the laws and regulations.

“What is required is just to enforce that and keep the population educated on the same subject. We will keep so educating our people so that we put our infrastructure safe,” he told the BBC.

Religious leaders are also appealing to their communities to do more to prevent those involved in these crimes from carrying them out.

Pastor Steven Msigara from the Jesus Assembles of God in Morogoro has called for a united effort to educate young people on the need to respect sacred places.

“Together, we must restore their dignity, we know some youth are exposed to bad acts but we can return them to the right track,” he says.

For relatives of those whose graves have been desecrated, there is a feeling of frustration.

Ms Chumbi wants more money to be spent on security at the cemeteries as well as a commitment to look after the sites with care befitting a place where loved ones are laid to rest.

She is in the process of replacing her mother’s cross for a second time – and, as in her daughter’s case – is opting for concrete.

Diana Asamoah Denounces Lesbian Claims

Diana Asamoah

Evangelist Diana Asamoah has issued a firm warning against the circulating claims on social media that suggest she is a lesbian.

The video in question, which features an unidentified woman making the baseless accusation, has sparked a wave of controversy online.

In Entertainment response, Diana Asamoah’s legal team has released a statement vehemently denying the allegations.

The Evangelist’s lawyers described the video as “slanderous” and misleading. “We have the instructions of our Client to assert in no uncertain terms that she is not a lesbian and does not practice lesbianism in any form or kind,” the statement read.

It further challenged the unidentified woman in the video to provide proof and stand by her claims in a court of law.

“We are throwing a challenge to the lady in the video to own up and justify her vile allegations so we contest her baseless claim in a court of competent jurisdiction,” the statement continued.

The Evangelist’s legal representatives have urged the public to disregard the video, stressing that it is nothing more than an unfounded attack on her character.

“When this lady does not boldly come out of her rut to justify her rantings, the general public should treat the circulating video with the contempt it deserves.”

Diana Asamoah’s legal response is obvious she remains steadfast in her position, focusing on her spiritual work and advocating for integrity in all aspects of her life.

Institute launches project to officialise Bono language

By Christopher Tetteh

Sunyani, (Bono), Feb. 20, GNA – The Bonoman Institute, a civil society organisation has launched the ‘Bono Twi Project’ to facilitate official documentation, recognition and use of the ‘Bono Twi’ language.

The institute works to promote the holistic development of the Bono, and Bono Regions by helping to preserve and promote the diverse cultural heritage of the people.

At the launching of the project in Sunyani, Mr Kofi Okofo Dartey, the Dean, Bono Institute said the Institute was pushing the adoption and use of the Bono language, as an official local dialect in schools.

It was on the theme: “Language; Our identity, culture and way of life” and aimed at helping to sustain the Bono Twi which is an integral part of the Bono cultural heritage and identity of the Bonos.

Mr Dartey explained that the project sought to promote cultural values of the Bono people and their heritage, lineage, history, natural resources and tourism and harness the potential for economic growth and development.

The Bible Society of Ghana collaborated with the Institute and inaugurated basic reading materials printed in the “Bono Twi language”.

Mr Dartey explained that the Institute was established to bring together Bono people resident home and abroad, to share values and promote development.

“The focus of the Bono Twi Project is to promote the study, spoken and written of the language for academic pursuit,” he stated.

Other perspectives included preservation, sustainable and economic exploitation of natural resources, and inclusiveness of national resource distribution, economic empowerment, social infrastructural improvement, unity, peace and stability.

Mr Dartey noted that despite the rich endowments and potential, development of the regions had been ‘back and forth,’ expressing worry about limited social and economic infrastructure, high illiteracy and youth unemployment, low economic activities and incomes.

He said communal conflict, disunity and weak influences continued to bedevil the region, hence the need for the people to come together to fund lasting solutions to challenges inimical to the growth and development of the area.

Nana Okokyeredom Sakyi Arko II, the Vice-President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs gave the assurance that the House, would continue to support the Institute to achieve its vision for the regions and advised parents and students to embrace the project.

Mr William Kwasi Sabi, the Board Chairman of the Institute asked the chiefs and people of the region to be proud of their culture, saying the Institute was also working to become a centre for research.

‘Politics is the problem in this country, not the constitution’

0

Dr. Kwasi Amakye Boateng Dr. Amakye Boateng

A senior political science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Kwasi Amakye Boateng, has asserted that Ghana’s real challenge is political culture, rather than the constitution.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews, monitored by GhanaWeb on Thursday, February 20, 2025, he argued that constitutional reforms alone will not resolve the country’s governance issues, as the core problem lies in how political power is acquired and exercised.

Dr. Boateng emphasised that political appointments should be the only positions affected by a change in government, while public servants must remain untouched to ensure administrative continuity.

He maintained that the distinction between politics and administration has always existed in democratic systems and must be upheld to protect the integrity of governance.

“Constitutional amendment that people are talking about will not address the things of the country. It is our politics. It comes out of our own behaviour relative to power, the way we get power. There are so many people who do things based on their own understanding and not necessarily based on understanding that they are serving the public interest. You know, people use power to resolve several issues.

“It is a politics that is a problem. It’s not a constitution which is problematic,” he indicated.

His comments follow President John Dramani Mahama’s recent inauguration of an eight-member Constitutional Review Committee tasked with assessing and proposing amendments to the 1992 constitution.

The committee, composed of legal and governance experts, will focus on identifying key areas of the constitution that need updating to align with the country’s evolving democratic and socio-economic realities.

Their mandate includes reviewing past recommendations, engaging relevant stakeholders, and suggesting reforms to strengthen Ghana’s governance system.

About 88 acres of Takoradi Air Force Base land encroached

0

About 88 out of 618 acres of land allocated by the central government to the Takoradi Air Force Base in the Western Region have been taken over by some encroachers.

Air Commodore Kwabena Kissiedu Manukure Atiemo, Takoradi Air Force Base Commander, said the encroachment had severe repercussions on their operations, and called for urgent action to protect their lands to ensure continued operational effectiveness of the Ghana Air Force.

He was briefing Mr Joseph Nelson, the Western Regional Minister, when he toured the Base as part of familiarisation visits to security agencies in the Region.

Air Commodore Atiemo said: “Encroachment is one of our big problems, and it is basically down to land administration issues and our failure over the years to secure cadastral for the entire space.”

He continued: “I am currently pushing very hard to continue the  efforts of the previous Base Commander to avert the issue.”

The Takoradi Air Force Base Commander, thus, appealed to the Western Regional Minister to collaborate with other relevant stakeholders to help the Base to regain control over the land encroached on military territory.

Mr Nelson assured the Command of his support in vigorously protecting the lands, particularly those within their primary operational enclave.

He called for effective collaboration and communication among key stakeholders, including the government, to combat the increasing  land encroachments in the country.

As part of his tour, the Regional Minister engaged Officers, men and women and other key stakeholders of the Air Force Base to foster collaboration and strong partnership.

Mr Nelson also toured the facilities, gaining insight into the Base’s operations and infrastructure, and inspected ongoing projects, demonstrating his interest in the Base’s development and progress.

If she decides to go ahead with the procedure, Maame Serwaa said she would document the process to educate others.

“Even if I decide to do it, I would make sure to document it so others who might want to undergo the same surgery will understand it’s not just about fashion,” she added.

Former NSA Officials Deny ‘Ghost Names’ Allegation

0

Osei Assibey Antwi

Former officers of the National Service Authority (NSA) have denied report of wrongdoing during their time at the authority, resulting in ‘ghost names’ on the payroll withdrawing monies for no work done.

Former Director-General of the NSA, Osei Assibey Antwi, as well as former Executive Director, Mustapha Ussif, in a statement argued that the claim by The Fourth Estate, “is laden with a misapprehension of the enrolment, verification and payment processes of the National Service Authority.

They also accused The Fourth Estate of selective omission of information, calculated to achieve contrived conclusions of imputing wrongdoing to former officers.

A statement issued by the former officers pointed out that the NSA operates multiple enrolment cycles, especially for nursing and teacher trainees, figures which were allegedly omitted in The Fourth Estate’s analysis, leading to an erroneous conclusion that there were ‘ghost names’ on the payroll.

The statement indicated that “The Fourth Estate relies on the above disparity to claim that the NSA payroll has been padded with “Ghosts” because monies allocated by Parliament exceed verified postings. Instructively, submissions of personnel list to Parliament for budgetary purposes are based on the total personnel posted by the Authority. However, in practice, not all persons posted end up on the payroll owing to varying reasons, including failing verification and failure to show up for the service.”

The statement emphasised that payment is only done following stringent verification processes and only personnel who pass the verification process are paid through the GhiPPS System, a Bank of Ghana subsidiary system.

“Even then, the payment is only made after monthly validations that confirm that personnel are at their respective postings. Any surplus sums after payments by GhiPPS are left in the Authority’s account for subsequent use. The publication by Fourth Estate is therefore false in suggesting simply because monies allocated by Parliament exceed verified postings, some “ghosts” are drawing pay,” the statement said.

On the allegation of the NSA system being full of people who are overaged, bear foreign pictures and wrong IDs, the statement clarified that all entries are cross-referenced and applicants are made to undergo in-person verification and “any personnel failing verification remains in the system under the banned, on hold or pending category, but becomes ineligible to be paid, hence does not draw from the payroll.”

The statement said it is therefore, shocking that The Fourth Estate would rely on these entry data without ascertaining from GhiPPS (the paying entity), the actual number of personnel paid per year and whether any of these persons with such inconsistent information actually received allowances from the NSA.

“This betrays the malicious intent of the purported investigation by the Fourth Estate, as merely calculated to hurriedly publish a sensational story to smear former officers, rather than diligently establish the facts as expected of a decent media house.”

The statement added that the former officers welcome President John Dramani Mahama’s directive for an investigation, as they are certain the investigation will reveal that the true state of affairs on the matters published are contrary to the contrived allegations by The Fourth Estate.

Court grants Portable N2m bail, adjourns to March 5

0

Controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has been granted bail by the Isabo Magistrate Court in Abeokuta following his arraignment on charges of assault and obstruction of government officials.

Portable, who had earlier surrendered himself to the police at the Lagos State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) on Wednesday after being declared wanted by the Ogun State Command, was transferred to the Ogun State Police Headquarters, Eleweran, before being presented in court on Thursday.

The singer faced a five-count charge, including conspiracy, assault, restriction, being armed with cutlasses and guns, and conduct likely to cause harm.

He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

His counsel, Oluwatoyin Ayodele, pleaded for bail, assuring the court that Portable “is now remorseful and has learnt his lessons.”

Magistrate O. L. Oke granted the singer bail in the sum of N2 million with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until March 5 for trial.

Alongside Portable, nine of his aides were also arraigned on similar charges before the magistrate.

The accused individuals, including Nurudeen Warris (21), Adetola Alashe (25), Samuel Adeleke (28), Oluwaseun Ayenuwa (19), Oluwapelumi Adeosun (20), Gospel Kanu (20), Precious Ohiegebo (19), Ifeoluwa Babatunde (27), and Fatimo Muhammed (26), were charged with felony, assault, obstruction, and conduct likely to breach public peace.

The Ogun State Government had earlier condemned Portable’s alleged actions, describing him as a “serial dissident and unrepentant rascal.”

The charges stemmed from a February 5, 2025, incident where he and his associates allegedly attacked three town planners—Abidemi Onabanjo, Ramon Lateef, and Akinpelumi Oyero—while they were performing their official duties at Odogwu Bar, owned by Portable, in the Sango area of Ogun State.

Ghana’s passport office to run 24-hour operati

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, Feb. 20, GNA-To boost efficiency and reduce waiting times, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced plans to transform the passport office into a 24-hour operation.

Speaking at the passport headquarters in Accra, Mr Ablakwa emphasised that applicants should receive their passports within a week of application, a key goal of the reform.

“We want the passport administration in our country to become a 24-hour operation. This year, you need to stand and get ready, prepare yourselves. We are going to run three shifts. We want to cut down on the waiting time for passports,” Ablakwa said after a tour of the place.

“We believe that within a week, it should be possible to get a Ghanaian passport when you apply for it. The 24-hour economy intervention we are making will address that,” he noted.

The move is part of the government’s 24-hour economy initiative, which aims to create jobs and improve public service efficiency.

To support this initiative, the government plans to expand storage facilities, data centers, and public amenities at the passport headquarters.

Mr Ablakwa also revealed plans to introduce chip-embedded passports and integrate passport data with the National Identification Authority system to streamline applicant verification. Additionally, he told the media that efforts were underway to revise passport fees, reducing costs for ordinary applicants while increasing fees for premium services.

“The announcement is a significant step towards modernising Ghana’s administrative services and reinforcing the country’s commitment to a more efficient, tech-driven, and accessible public sector,” he said.

Unpaid debts: Ghana at risk of power shortages as gas company suspends supply

0

In a letter addressed to the Managing Director of VRA on Tuesday, 18 February 2025, the company stated that effective 6 March 2025, it would cease further gas deliveries in accordance with Clause 13.6(a) of the Takoradi Gas Sales Agreement.

This clause permits the suspension of supply if the buyer fails to meet its payment obligations. The notification underscores the urgency for the VRA to address its financial commitments to avoid disruptions in energy supply.

The letter also indicated that N-Gas is committed to upholding the integrity of contracts across the value chain. As a result, the company may require VRA to make a one-month prepayment as a condition for the continued supply of gas.

“To ensure the sanctity of contracts across the value chain, N-Gas may demand one month of prepayment from VRA for continued gas supply,” the letter stated, reinforcing the company’s firm stance on financial commitments.

The impending suspension of gas supply raises concerns over Ghana’s energy security, as it could significantly impact power generation.

The VRA, which heavily relies on N-Gas to fuel its thermal power plants, may need to explore alternative sources of gas to prevent disruptions in electricity supply.

N-Gas Limited, a key supplier of natural gas to Ghana, transports gas to the VRA through the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo).

The ongoing financial challenges between N-Gas and VRA highlight the broader issue of energy sector funding in Ghana, which could affect both businesses and households if left unresolved.

With the suspension deadline approaching, stakeholders in Ghana’s energy sector must act swiftly to address the arrears and ensure continued gas supply. Failure to meet N-Gas’s demands could lead to power shortages, affecting industries, businesses, and households nationwide.

Akwaaba UK planned to ‘sabotage’ Stonebwoy’s UK show

Dancehall musician, Stonebwoy Dancehall musician, Stonebwoy

Stonebwoy’s manager, Chief Stylz, has alleged that some event organisers have planned to ‘sabotage’ the musician’s album tour in the UK .

In an interview on Hitz FM on February 19, 2025, Chief Stylz revealed that their camp was the first to announce March 8, 2025, as the official date for Stonebwoy’s tour.

Chief Stylz pointed out that after their public announcement of the tour date, events management group Akwaaba UK, which is currently organising R2Bees’ concert in the UK, set the same date for their 68th Independence Anniversary concert.

“I remember we announced the date of the show in October, and a few days into January, we received a call from our business manager in London. He told us that there were some concerns raised by Akwaaba UK, and they were not happy with a few things. They were planning to put up a show on the same date as Stonebwoy.

“This year’s Independence weekend is a long one, and every Independence Day is also Stonebwoy’s birthday. Usually, we would be in America, but this time he decided we take it to the UK because, at that time, there was no announcement from anybody to that effect. I am told by people from the meeting that they also planned to organise their event on the same date as Stonebwoy’s,” he said.

Chief Stylz stated that the ongoing development is casting Stonebwoy in a negative light.

“I think it is just some sort of orchestration for people to put Stonebwoy in a bad light, to make him look like he is the one trying to go against them,” he added.

He also mentioned that these occurencies are putting the two artistes, whose concerts are being planned, in a position where they are being pitted against each other.

“I was thinking that by doing this, they’re essentially trying to pit the two artistes against each other. Stone is very good friends with R2Bees, and Stone and Mugeez are very close. I respect them; they are legends. But when this happens, it makes the fans believe that something is going on between them,” he stated.

The artiste manager also refuted claims that Stonebwoy declined to perform at the 68th Independence Anniversary celebration in the UK, organised by Alordia Promotions and West Coast Entertainment.

“Alordia himself knows very well about the audios circulating… You might have a personal relationship with Stonebwoy and send a request personally to him; he might not see it on time… They didn’t send a request to the management, so why would they say they sent a request? There wasn’t anything like that,” he stated.

Uganda discharges Ebola patients

There is no approved vaccine for the Sudan strain of the Ebola virus There is no approved vaccine for the Sudan strain of the Ebola virus

Uganda has discharged eight patients who have recovered from the Sudan strain of Ebola after they tested negative twice, health officials have said.

The disease has killed one person and infected eight others since an outbreak was reported last month, but 265 people, who were listed for monitoring, remain in quarantine.

This is the eighth Ebola outbreak in Uganda since the first infection was recorded in 2000.

The Sudan Ebola Virus Disease (SUDV) is a highly infectious haemorrhagic fever which is transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids and tissues. It is one of several strains of the Ebola virus known to cause outbreaks.

Unlike the more common Zaire Ebola virus, there is no approved vaccine for the Sudan strain.

However, the government launched a trial vaccine earlier this month.

Only a 32-year-old male nurse is known to have died in the latest outbreak.

Uganda’s Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero confirmed the discharge of the eight patients and said they should not be stigmatised.

“I urge their families and communities to receive and interact with them normally,” the minister added.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said their recovery was “an important milestone” in efforts to contain the outbreak.

The Sudan strain is severe, normally killing at least 40% of those infected, but the fatality rate this time is low, WHO said.

Is Ghana Facing a Military Takeover?

0

According to GhanaWeb, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has criticized President John Dramani Mahama’s government regarding recent developments in the nation.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate for the upcoming 2024 elections mentioned that he accepted an early defeat in the previous election to uphold peace, yet the current situation appears to contradict that aim.

He pointed out a prevailing sense of insecurity in the country, highlighting attacks on journalists and the military’s involvement in raiding the homes of former officials and communities.

In a Facebook post on February 19, 2025, he expressed concerns about the atmosphere of insecurity, noting incidents involving mobs targeting innocent citizens and state facilities.

He remarked that the current situation resembles a military takeover rather than a peaceful democratic shift, emphasizing the urgent need for measures to safeguard democratic practices and institutions in Ghana.

Bawumia stated that Ghanaians had hoped for significant change, which included moving away from the negative aspects of governance seen since 1992.

He urged President Mahama to act as a leader for all Ghanaians by halting these troubling trends, reinstating unfairly dismissed workers, and ensuring the safety of all citizens.

He also condemned the president for dismissing public employees appointed by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, stressing the importance of advancing democracy, protecting state institutions, and adhering to the Constitution.

He insisted that Ghana has the potential to improve.

His remarks followed reports of alleged party members attacking state institutions in the wake of the government change.

Additionally, a recent incident involved individuals in military attire storming the residence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta on February 11, 2025, while he was reportedly abroad, with the reasons for the raid remaining uncertain.

Mahama administration repeating dangerous radio shutdowns

0

The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has weighed in on government’s recent shutdown of seven private radio stations, warning that the move sets a dangerous precedent for press freedom and media pluralism.

While acknowledging the need for regulatory enforcement, the MFWA expressed concerns about the fairness and transparency of the process, particularly regarding political interference in media regulation.

The closure, directed by Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, affected Bawku-based Gumah FM, which was shut down on national security grounds, and six other stations cited for operating without valid frequency authorisations.

The government maintains that the shutdowns were legal and necessary to enforce broadcasting standards.

However, the MFWA argues that the move could undermine democratic principles if left unchecked.

“Radio plays a crucial role in promoting inclusion and reflecting divergent opinions in the political terrain,” the MFWA noted in its statement on Wednesday, warning that “Any intervention in the broadcasting regulation domain by politicians raises suspicions of possible political targeting and favouritism.”

A key concern for the MFWA is the handling of Gumah FM’s closure, stating that the issues at hand fall under the jurisdiction of the independent National Media Commission (NMC), not government officials.

“While the accusations may be tenable, we cannot allow a “tribunal” of partisan political players such as the sector minister, the Regional Minister, the Director General of the NCA, the National Security Coordinator, among partisan persons, to prosecute, while being themselves the complainants.

“Even if the decision was based on intelligence advice, the facts and evidence must be put before the NMC for it to recommend the shutdown if convinced,” the MFWA emphasized.

To safeguard press freedom, the MFWA is urging urgent reforms that will transfer broadcast licensing and regulatory authority from the National Communications Authority (NCA) to the independent NMC. It warns that continued government interference in media regulation could have dire consequences.

“The MFWA fears that if this trend is entrenched, critical broadcast stations can be shut down… for political reasons,” the statement warned.

The MFWA’s latest warning amplifies concerns about the increasing restrictions on independent journalism in Ghana, having witnessed multiple media shutdowns under the Nana Akufo-Addo administration since 2017.

Murtala Ibrahim goes tough on galamsey, warning politicians involved

Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed

The Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, has issued a stern warning that no politician involved in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, will be exempt from punishment.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV, monitored by GhanaWeb, he emphasised that President John Dramani Mahama has taken a firm stance on the issue and will not tolerate any form of illegal mining, regardless of the individuals involved.

“Whether you are a minister or a Member of Parliament, if you engage in galamsey, you will not be spared. President Mahama has made this very clear,” he declared.

The Member of Parliament for Tamale Central further assured the public that his ministry, in collaboration with other relevant agencies, remains resolute in addressing the problem.

“As the minister leading this fight, I will not relent in my efforts, nor will my colleagues. We cannot afford to fail President Mahama. The people of Ghana gave him an overwhelming mandate, partly because of his promise to combat illegal mining. We must fulfil that promise,” he stated.

“This is a warning to anyone involved in illegal mining – you will face the consequences,” he further cautioned.

It would be recalled that on Wednesday, 19 February 2025, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, highlighted the devastating impact of illegal mining on the nation’s forest reserves and water bodies.

Delivering a statement in Parliament on the state of the country’s forest reserves and water resources, he stressed the severity of the situation.

“Ghana is currently facing an unprecedented threat to its forest resources and water bodies, largely due to illegal small-scale mining. This situation has reached crisis proportions.

“More than nine of our 44 forest reserves have been completely taken over by these illegal mining syndicates, operating with impunity. The Forestry Commission no longer has access to these reserves,” the minister noted.

A$AP Rocky Found Not Guilty In Firearm Assault Case

0

A$AP Rocky

Rapper A$AP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, has been found not guilty of firing a gun at his former friend, Terell Ephron, during an argument in Los Angeles in 2021.

A jury acquitted the Grammy-nominated musician on two felony assault charges that could have led to up to 24 years in prison.

The incident occurred on November 6, 2021, when Ephron, who goes by the name A$AP Relli, claimed that A$AP Rocky shot at him during a confrontation on a Hollywood street, grazing his knuckles with one of the shots.

Mayers denied the charges, asserting that the weapon was a prop gun and that his former friend was only seeking money. As the not-guilty verdict was read in court on Tuesday, cheers and clapping filled the room. A$AP Rocky quickly rushed to embrace his family, including his partner, pop star Rihanna, who was seated behind him.

“I thank God for saving my life,” Mayers said emotionally, expressing gratitude toward the 12-person jury.

The dispute between the two men dates back to their high school days in New York, where they were part of the A$AP Mob hip-hop collective. However, their friendship soured as A$AP Rocky’s career began to rise.

The incident occurred a day after the pair argued at a hotel near the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Despite the legal challenges, Mayers has been cleared of the charges, marking a victory for the rapper.

Government dismisses claims NPP left funds for bondholders payments

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, Feb 20, GNA – The Government has dismissed claims that it was able to pay the GH¢6 billion to domestic bondholders because the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration has left funds for it.

Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Presidential Spokesman and Minister of State in-charge of Government Communications, speaking to the Presidential Press Corps at the seat of Government on Wednesday, said on the basis of available facts and evidence, the claim by members of the previous NPP administration, that the Mahama Administration was able to honor the debt obligations because of buffers they built was completely untrue.

He said President Mahama had in a directive to the Ministry of Finance ordered that step be taken to settle maturing coupons of Ghanaian bondholders who suffered drastic haircuts and under the domestic debts exchange programme.

He said following a directive from President Mahama, the finance minister on Monday, 17th February, released an amount of GH¢ 6 billion to these bondholders.

He said subsequent to the announcement that the second batch had been reactivated, the Government had had some rebuttals from the NPP, whose officials had claimed that the Government had been able to do that only because the previous NPP administration left some buffers and that it was not because of any specific intervention from President Mahama.

“I wish to place on record that this narrative is untrue. For officials of the former government to be able to say that these payments and honouring of these obligations have been the outcome of the work that they did, they need to point specifically where those buffers were located,” Mr Ofosu said.

“Because, in order to be able to pay them, you need to find it and lodge a summary.

That is what we call a buffer, Pending Payment Act.”

He noted that what they called the sinking fund, for short, was known as the Debt Service Reserve Account; saying “that is where money is kept pending the payment of bondholders and other creditors”.

He said the Debt Service Reserve Account had a cedi component and a dollar component; “in other words, there are two accounts; one denominated in cedis and the other denominated in dollars”.

“So, because it is an account, it is possible to obtain a statement of account which shows you transactions over a certain period.”

Mr Ofosu said if the NPP officials were saying that the Government was able to pay these monies because they left money in the Central Bank, it should reflect when one takes a cursory look at the statement of account.

“I have the statement of account. It is a continuous document, which shows all transactions, which had occurred in the account over a certain period,” he said.

“Now, if you look at the dollar denominated Debt Service Reserve Account, the records will show that the last time under the NPP, when there was a movement in the account, was 22nd October, 2024.”

Adding that that was the last time that any money came in or left that account before the NPP left office.

He said if one checks the balance in the account as of 24th October 22nd October 2024, it was $64,387.

“We are talking about payments within the range of GH¢ 6 billion. And you and I know that $64,387 cannot amount to GH¢6 billion,” he said.

“I mean, if you did a rough conversion using an exchange rate of GH¢ 15.00, I am sure you will get something in the range of about GH¢ 800,000 or a little over a million Ghana cedis, if my mathematics is right.”

Mr Ofosu said: “On 31st January 2055, and everybody knows that on 31st January, it was the NDC Government that was in power, not so? An amount of $96,915,182.00 was lodged in the account by the Finance Minister.”

“And it is clear where that money came from. It did not come from anything that the NPP had left in that account.”

Mr Ofosu reiterated that the last time that there was any movement in the Debt Service Reserve Account, which was an account right under the NPP, was 22nd October 2024; and that the balance on that day in the account was $64,387.00

He said the next time there was a movement was 31st January 2025, and a transfer of $96,915,182.00 was made to the account to make sure that we can meet the obligation that arose on 18th February 2055; stating that that was the payment of maturity coupons to bondholders.

He said if one looks at the cedi denominated Debt Service Reserve Account, one would found also that when the NDC took over on 7th January, 2025, the last time that anything happened in that account, before the NPP left office, was 2nd January, 2025.

Mr Ofosu said the amount of money in the account on that date, 2nd January 2025, was GH¢ 155,463,435.00

“Bear in mind that we are talking about payments in excess of GH¢ 6 billion.

In addition to that, another GH¢ 9 billion is currently sitting in the fund as we speak to pay for maturing coupons in July and August,” he said.

“If you put this together, that is GH¢ 15 billion. Yet the balance when the NPP was leaving was GH¢155 million. So how could they say that they were the ones who built the buffer? What kind of buffer is this? If you have obligations amounting to GH¢15 billion? Is the buffer you need for that GH¢155 million?”

He said if one checks the statement of account, one will see movements of monies into the account starting from somewhere around 23rd January 2025, by this Government.

“And that is the reason why we were able to honour the obligation that arose from the domestic debt exchange group,” he said.

“As I speak to you, as of yesterday, 17th February 2025, their balance in the account was $9,217,537,727.67, and this balance is there as a buffer against their service obligations in July and August.”

He said it was clear because of available facts and evidence, that a claim by members of the NPP administration, which just went out of power, that the Government was able to honor these obligations because of buffers they built was false.

The Member of Parliament for Afadjato South, Frank Afriyie, has called for urgent action to address Ghana’s growing water supply challenges.

In a statement on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, February 19, the MP expressed concern over the deteriorating state of water resources in his area stemming from the malfunctioning Kpeve Water Treatment Plant since December last year.

Frank Afriyie called on the government to ensure that all citizens across the country have access to safe drinking water

“Let us prioritise urgent repairs and upgrade of existing water treatment plants across the nation, ensuring that they can meet the demands of a growing population. Additionally, we should expand our distribution networks to guarantee the communities to have access to clean and safe drinking water.

“Until last weekend, residents from Kpeve and neighbouring communities faced continual challenges in assessing clean water due to the malfunctioning Kpeve Water Treatment Plant since mid-December last year.

“This is merely a microcosm of a much larger national issue that threatens the health, safety, and livelihood of countless Ghanaians.”

Overlord of Mamprugu land Nayiri Mahami Abdulai Sheriga
Overlord of Mamprugu land Nayiri Mahami Abdulai Sheriga

In a dramatic appeal for calm, the overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sherigah II—known as the Nayiri—has urged the Interior Minister to lift the curfew imposed on Walewale and its surrounding areas.

The plea, delivered by a delegation led by Mba Taraana, comes in the wake of mounting community distress and troubling reports of military excesses.

The imposition of the curfew, intended as a measure to restore order, has instead deepened local suffering. Residents, already reeling from recent episodes of military brutality, now face a host of challenges ranging from disrupted daily life to the risk of being left vulnerable in the dead of night. Schoolchildren in nearby communities, for example, have been forced to abandon their studies while armed soldiers patrol the streets, and there are disturbing allegations that security personnel have even resorted to extortion—forcing stranded commuters to pay for their safe return home under threat of violence.

The Nayiri’s call was not merely about immediate relief; it was a pointed reminder that such draconian measures may only serve to fan the flames of unrest rather than quell them. At the Walewale Government Hospital, injured citizens continue to receive treatment for wounds inflicted during what many describe as unchecked military aggression—a grim tableau that underscores the human cost of the current security strategy.

In what many see as a plea for both justice and sanity, the delegation also conveyed condolences to families who have lost loved ones in recent violent incidents. Their message was clear: lifting the curfew is essential not only for the restoration of routine and economic activity but also for the preservation of peace and community trust. The Nayiri’s appeal resonates with those who believe that the current security approach, marked by heavy-handed tactics, risks alienating the very citizens it is meant to protect.

The situation in Walewale is a stark reminder that measures intended to secure public order can, if misapplied, become a source of further strife. As the government contemplates its next move, many are left to wonder whether a more inclusive dialogue between security forces and community leaders might pave the way for a resolution that prioritizes lasting peace over temporary fixes.

Ghana lost GHȼ4.6 billion to Tax Exemptions in 2023

0

Ghana’s Finance Ministry has revealed that the country lost GHȼ4.6 billion to tax expenditures in 2023—a 4.2% drop from the GHȼ4.8 billion recorded in 2022.

While the decline suggests a modest improvement, the scale of these exemptions—particularly import waivers—continues to raise concerns about Ghana’s fiscal health and revenue mobilization efforts.

Where Did the Money Go?

Tax expenditures refer to revenues forgone due to preferential tax treatments. In Ghana, these typically include exemptions on domestic taxes and import duties.

In 2023, import exemptions dominated, accounting for GHȼ3.545 billion—or 76.76% of the total. Domestic indirect tax exemptions amounted to GHȼ809 million, while domestic direct tax exemptions were GHȼ264.02 million.

Import exemptions have steadily increased, rising from GHȼ2.46 billion in 2021 to GHȼ3.545 billion in 2023.

The largest share came from parliamentary exemptions, which totalled GHȼ1.7 billion—representing 37% of all tax expenditures and nearly half of the import exemptions.

The Controversy Over Parliamentary Exemptions

Parliamentary exemptions—granted under parliamentary resolutions—cover a broad range of public and publicly guaranteed projects financed through loans, aid, or grants.

They also extend to benefits for Members of Parliament (MPs) and Council of State members, such as vehicle tax waivers.

In 2023, these exemptions included:

  • GHȼ1.3 billion for mining companies
  • GHȼ460 million for grant-funded projects
  • GHȼ40.9 million for the One District One Factory (1D1F) program
  • GHȼ3.9 million for MPs and Council of State members’ vehicle tax waivers

The World Bank has repeatedly called for Ghana to rationalise its import duty waivers, warning that excessive exemptions erode the country’s revenue base.

The NDC minority in the 8th Parliament also resisted certain waivers in the wee hours of the outgoing NPP government, particularly those under the 1D1F initiative, arguing that such exemptions disproportionately benefit a select few while undermining public finances.

A Sign of Progress?

Despite the rising value of import exemptions, their share of total tax revenue has declined—from 5.74% in 2018 to 3.14% in 2023.

The Finance Ministry attributes this to a more streamlined exemption regime, fewer project-related disbursements, and improved revenue collection.

Still, tax expenditures remain a significant drain on public funds. As Ghana faces ongoing economic challenges, the government faces a difficult balancing act—offering incentives to attract investment while preserving vital revenue streams.

With a tighter borrowing environment, every cedi saved from unnecessary exemptions is critical for sustaining public finances.

Remove the name ‘Kotoka’ from the airport, it’s a disgrace to our history

KSM is a veteran Ghanaian comedian KSM is a veteran Ghanaian comedian

Media personality and comedian, Kwaku Sintim-Misa, popularly known as KSM, has urged former President John Dramani Mahama to rename Kotoka International Airport.

He has labelled the ariport’s current name a “disgrace” to Ghana’s history.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, KSM argued that the airport should instead be named after Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, to honour his Pan-African legacy and contributions to the nation’s independence.

He criticized the decision to name the airport after Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, who led the 1966 coup that ousted Nkrumah.

According to KSM, Kotoka’s role in disrupting Nkrumah’s Pan-African vision and his alleged ties to foreign powers, make him unworthy for such a prominent national landmark.

“I hear people are blundering around that they should rename the airport Kwame Nkrumah International Airport. I stand by that. When a person like this leads a country and an airport is built, or they want to name the airport, do you name the airport after the clown who took money from the CIA to overthrow Kwame Kruan? Isn’t it a disgrace?

“What value does Kotoka have in the scheme of national events? He was one of the commanders of some battalion and something like that. But what was his impact before then? I do not think that the national airport should be named after somebody who basically disrupted the Pan African movement and left Kwame Nkruma in exile,” he quizzed.

KSM also dismissed the argument that the airport was named after Kotoka because it was the site of his death during a failed coup attempt in 1967.

“Somebody came to explain that the airport is where Kotoka lost his life. So that was a landmark where he died. But naming the airport was not because he had done anything magnificent for this country.

“We name a person and after something substantial. And I don’t think that anybody deserves the name,” he said.

He said national landmarks should be named after individuals who have made substantial contributions to the country, not merely because of their association with a location.

Parliament must revise its rules on vetting

Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana play videoMember of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana

The Member of Parliament for Ketu North Eric Adam Agbana, has expressed regret over the recent chaos that erupted during a sitting of the Appointments Committee of Parliament, calling it an unfortunate incident that damaged the image of the legislative house as well as the Speaker, Alban Bagbin.

In an exclusive interview with GhanWeb TV’s George Ayisi, Edem Agbana emphasized the need for introspection and reform within parliamentary processes to prevent such events from recurring.

Reflecting on the incident, Agbana stated, “It has caused a lot of damage to his image, and we sincerely apologize to Mr. Speaker for that.”

While refraining from immediate judgment on the role of the decision by the Minority Caucus (New Patriotic Party MPs) to boycott the ad-hoc committee investigating the incident, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP indicated his intent to await guidance from parliamentary leadership, saying, “I’ll wait for leadership to see what steps they will take concerning that.”

The Ketu North MP expressed hope that the incident would serve as a catalyst for positive change, particularly in how parliamentary proceedings are governed.

“I am also looking forward to the house revising its own rules on how proceedings are conducted,” he said, highlighting the need to draw “valuable lessons” from the experience.

Edem Agbana posed critical questions about the current rules, asking, “Should we have limited time allocated for vetting? Are there some areas we should bar members from asking questions about?”

He suggested that the disruption provides an opportunity to review the Standing Orders, stating, “I think this incident has provided us an opportunity to take a look at our Standing Orders and how the Appointments Committee conducts its business.”

Beyond the immediate fallout, Agbana framed the chaos as a learning moment for Ghana’s democracy.

“For me, we can also learn a lot from what happened and see how we can build this democracy and make it better,” he remarked while describing democracy as a dynamic process.

“I always say that democracy is the only subject that keeps changing rapidly without losing its core essence. It’s the only subject where every day we learn from experience.” He further emphasized its evolving nature, saying, “Democracy gives us that opportunity to keep learning and relearning, and to unlearn certain practices—all for the betterment of our country.”

Edem Agbana urged the ad-hoc committee to continue its investigations into the incident, asserting that the resultant report should guide future deliberations.

“I believe the committee should proceed with their investigations, and whatever report comes out should shape deliberations moving forward so that this unfortunate event from that evening does not repeat itself,” he said.

On January 30, 2025, chaos erupted during a late-night sitting of the Appointments Committee of Parliament during a vetting of ministerial nominees by President John Dramani Mahama.

Tensions flared when the Majority (NDC) pushed to continue vetting additional nominees after 10:00 p.m., despite Minority (NPP) demands for adjournment due to exhaustion.

The disagreement escalated into physical confrontations, damaging property and prompting police intervention. Speaker Alban Bagbin condemned the incident, suspended four MPs, and ordered a special committee to investigate within 10 days.

The Speaker has however withdrawn the suspension of the four MPs.

Poultry farmers need comprehensive policy to sustain industry

0

The Central Regional Poultry Farmers Association has called for a clear policy that would inspire and sustain the poultry industry.

The Association said there was no government policy direction for the poultry industry, unlike crop farmers who received incentives to enhance production.

The call was made at a seminar organised by the Central Regional Poultry Farmers Association in conjunction with the ECO Feeding Ghana Limited at Agona Swedru to educate farmers on challenges and solutions to maximize more returns.

Some of the topics treated were heat stress in poultry production, the importance of assessing veterinary services and technical information to the poultry farmer, effective broiler production all year round to meet local markets and many others.

The participants were drawn from Gomoa East, Gomoa Central, Awutu Senya- West, Awutu Senya- East, Agona West and East, Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa, Cape Coast and Ajumako- Enyan-Esiam Districts.

Nana Dr Darko Asamoah, Central Regional Chairman of the Poultry Farmers Association, said the planting for food and jobs policy did not capture poultry farmers.

He said the lack of access to capital to expand farms to meet market demand had become a major problem facing the farmers.

The chairman appealed to the government to support the poultry industry in Ghana with capital and acquisition of land to encourage the youth to go into the poultry business.

Nana Dr Asamoah called on the government to encourage and support all Senior High Schools to have poultry farms to reduce expenditure on chicken and eggs.

He urged the government to as a matter of urgency, recruit more veterinary staff to support poultry farmers, adding that it was important also to set up veterinary clinics and laboratories to ensure proper care of animals.

The Chairman asked the Ministry of Agriculture and other relevant development partners to organise regular training and education for farmers to update them on the importance of poultry farms.

Nana Dr Asamoah said Ghana needed 350 metric tonnes of poultry but at the moment, farmers could only produce 15 metric tonnes, which was woefully inadequate due to many obstacles.

The Chairman said Central region formerly had more than 3,800 poultry farmers, but many had folded up leaving only 1, 260 who were facing challenges which needed government urgent intervention to salvage the industry from collapse.

He said the poultry industry in the region employed more than 10,000 direct workforce, reducing the unemployment pressure.

Dr Peter Omega, the Central Regional Director of Agriculture, urged the poultry farmers to form strong cooperatives to have a united front to enable them receive the incentive packages intended to be rolled out by the new Minister of Agriculture.

The Regional Director said it was easier for cooperatives to receive financial and logistical support from both government and external partners to cultivate maize farms in large quantities to feed their birds.

He expressed concern about inadequate staffing of veterinary and extension officers in the region, making it extremely difficult for the few officers to offer the required and needful services to poultry and crop farmers.

Dr Omega added his voice to the government by recruiting more staff for both extension and veterinary officers to improve efficiency in the agriculture department.

The Regional Director expressed optimism that the experts’ advice to the farmers would be used to maximize the needed returns to produce more meat and eggs to feed the country.

Mr Tiago Ferreira, a visiting Portuguese poultry Farmer, and a poultry expert, urged farmers to heed the advice on heat stress which was a major challenge in poultry farming, to ensure the safety of their animals.

Mr Tiago also called on farmers to apply modern methods of feeding and other relevant ways that could make the animals more robust to withstand all forms of challenges that may occur in poultry production.

Negative reactions follow Ayariga’s revelation of potential broadcasting of GPL on Supersport

Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga

Some members of the public have expressed outrage over claims by Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, that Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, is in negotiations with SuperSport, to secure a deal that would make them broadcasters of the Ghana Premier League.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, the former sports minister disclosed that efforts are underway to reform the league, with a potential broadcast deal involving one of Africa’s biggest sports networks, SuperSport.

“The Minister of Sports has a major agenda to revive football at the district, regional, and national levels. He is already engaging with the media to explore ways to promote sports.

“He has informed me that he is negotiating with SuperSport and other broadcasters to start covering our local leagues,” he said.

However, the idea was met with a backlash on social media, with some individuals claiming it is a misplaced priority considering the state of the league.

They argued that, given the poor state of the various pitches at the league venues, broadcasting matches would be an embarrassment, and therefore, funds should be invested in fixing the pitches instead.

Others also cited concerns about poor officiating and low salaries paid to players as key issues that ought to be tackled instead of investing funds in television broadcasting.

Pioneering African film-maker Souleymane Cissé dies aged 84

0

He was hailed as a founding father of African film He was hailed as a founding father of African film

Malian film director Souleymane Cissé, one of the pioneers of African cinema, has died aged 84.

His daughter, Mariam Cissé, confirmed his death at clinic in the capital Bamako, expressing shock and mourning “the loss of a man who dedicated his life to film and art”.

The cause of his death has not been announced.

Cissé first gained international recognition in 1987 when his film Yeelen (The Light) won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, becoming the first black African film-maker to win the prize.

His trailblazing career spanned more than 50 years, winning many accolades along the way.

In 2023, Cissé was honoured by Cannes with a Carrosse d’Or award, usually given to directors who have “marked the history of cinema with their boldness, their exacting standards and their intransigence in staging”.

Cissé was also a double winner of the grand prize at Burkina Faso’s Pan-African Film Festival, Fespaco.

At the time of his death he had been due to travel to the Burkinabè capital to preside over the jury at the festival which opens this weekend.

Tributes have been pouring in for the man, praising his dedication to African storytelling.

Mali’s Culture Minister Mamou Daffé lamented the loss “of this monument of African cinema”, while fellow Malian director Boubacar Sidibé said the country’s film industry was in “mourning”.

Film lovers have praised Cissé’s works for their complexity, political engagement and deep humanity.

His first feature film, Den Muso (The Young Girl) shot in 1975, was in the local Bambara language, and is considered an African classic.

The film is about a young girl who is raped, becomes pregnant and is rejected by her family.

The film was banned by the Malian authorities, and Cissé was jailed for having accepted French funding. He wrote the screenplay for his second film, Baara (Work), while in prison.

He made other films including Finyè (The Wind) in 1981, and Yeelen (The Light), which won the Jury Prize in Cannes in 1987. His last film in 1995 was Waati (Time).

Cissé was born in the Malian capital Bamako, and spent part of his childhood in neighbouring Senegal.

Later, he studied film in Russia’s capital Moscow, becoming one of the first generation of African film-makers.

Cissé went on to champion government support for and investment in the film industry.

He was the union’s founding president representing West Africa’s entrepreneurs in cinema and audiovisual arts.

Cissé was often outspoken about other barriers to the spread of African cinema – criticising “censorship” and “contempt”, and urging young filmmakers not to act like “beggars who must plead every time for financing from Europe” but instead seek greater independence.

Hours before his death, he reportedly urged Mali’s military government to help the country’s industry catch up with its continental rivals.

“It is not enough to make cinema, the works must also be visible,” the AFP news agency quoted Cissé as saying.

“May the authorities help us with the construction of cinemas.”

Don’t rush to restore licences of collapsed banks – Peter Quartey warns

0

Professor Peter Quartey, Director of the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER), has urged the government and the leadership of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to proceed cautiously in considering the reinstatement of licenses for local banks affected by the banking sector cleanup.

He warns that rushing the process could destabilize the sector and erode confidence in the broader economy.

The push to restore licenses for some collapsed banks has gained momentum following the appointment of Dr. Johnson Asiama as the new Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

GN Bank’s founder, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, has repeatedly maintained that his bank’s closure was unjust, while Seidu Agongo, the majority shareholder of the defunct Heritage Bank, has also expressed similar concerns.

However, former BoG Governor Dr. Ernest Addison, before his early retirement, firmly opposed reinstating the revoked licenses.

With foreign entities now controlling two-thirds of Ghana’s 23 commercial banks, concerns over local ownership in the sector are growing.

Despite these concerns, Financial Analyst, Professor Peter Quartey, has cautioned against making hasty decisions. He emphasized the need for a thorough, independent review before any action is taken.

“I think we should tread cautiously. You don’t want to set such a precedent where the Central Bank takes a decision and then it is reversed. If anybody has issues with that decision, that person can challenge it in court,” he said in an interview with Citi Business News.

He further added that: ” We have listened to one side which calls for further investigation. Let us not be in a haste to reinstate people who perhaps have caused financial loss to the state.”

Nana B Sues Govt Over Post -Election Jobs Termination

0

Henry Nana Boakye

National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B), has sued government over the decision to terminate all appointments and recruitments made into the public sector by the previous government after the December 7, 2024 election.

The suit, filed at the Supreme Court, seeks among others, a declaration that the directive from the Office of the President dated February 10, 2025, and signed by the Chief of Staff to Heads of Government Institutions to annul all appointments and recruitments made in the Public Services of Ghana after December 7, 2024, is unconstitutional as the Chief of Staff lacks the power to give such a directive.

The suit which names the Attorney General as the defendant in the matters, also avers that any annulment by the Heads of Government Institutions pursuant to the February 10, 2025 directive from the Office of the President is unconstitutional as same is in contravention of Article 191(b) of the Constitution, 1992.

Annulment

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, on February 10, 2025, issued a directive revoking all appointments and recruitments made into the Public Service after December 7, 2024.

A letter issued by him indicated that “Consistent with Government pronouncement in relation to near end of tenure appointments and recruitments, I wish to bring to your attention that all appointments and recruitments made in the Public Services of Ghana after 7th December, 2024 are not in compliance with established good governance practices and principles.”

It added that “Accordingly, all Heads of Government Institutions are hereby requested to take the necessary steps to annul any such appointments or recruitments and submit a comprehensive report on the actions taken to this Office by 17th February, 2025.”

The Minority NPP has raised several concerns about the revocation of the appointments and recruitments, urging government to reconsider the decision.

But government maintains its decision, with the Majority Leader, Hassan Ayariga, calling it “reckless” and detrimental to the country’s fiscal stability.

Suit

Nana B has now followed through with his threat to sue the government if the decision is not rescinded, arguing that the revocation is unconstitutional.

He avers that should the court find that the Chief of Staff has the power to give the subject directive, it should declare that the directive from the Office of the President dated and signed by the Chief of Staff to Heads of Government Institutions to annul all appointments and recruitments made in the Public Services of Ghana after December 7, 2024 is in contravention of Article 191 (b) of the 1992 Constitution as same is without just cause and thus unconstitutional.

“A declaration that on a true and proper interpretation of Article 58(2) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, the President of the Republic of Ghana is under an obligation to execute and maintain Article 191 (b) of the 1992 Constitution and the Public Services Commission Act, 1994 (Act 4),” the suit added.

He further wants a declaration that President John Dramani Mahama has breached Articles 58 (2) and 191(b) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana in view of the aforementioned directive.

Again, he wants “An Order in the nature of prohibitory injunction directed at the Heads of Government Institutions to refrain from annulling the appointments and recruitment made in the Public Services of Ghana after 7th December, 2024.”

Murtala Mohammed emphasized that his motivation for studying law was not to practice but to prepare for a role in academia.

Mohammed, who graduated with an LLB from Mountcrest University in 2016, mentioned his aspiration to eventually teach, reflecting on his belief that politics is a temporary phase in his career.

According to a Graphic Sports publication, Agyemang Duah Owusu, a 42-year-old police inspector, was granted bail during a court sitting on February 17, 2025.

As part of the bail conditions, Owusu must submit his passport to the court registry within three days.

The report furthered that the court reviewed the bail conditions of the other suspects, which include Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Joseph Kyeremeh, Elizabeth Akosua Ntiwaa, and Yaa Asantewaa.

The new terms of their bail allow them to either travel or leave Sunyani of their own accord without any judicial restrictions.

NDC will not take morality lessons from a brothel – Edem Agbana slams NPP

0

The Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana has launched a scathing attack on the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing them of hypocrisy and lacking the moral credibility to criticize the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government under President John Mahama. 4

In an exclusive with GhanaWeb TV’s George Ayisi, Edem Agbana dismissed the NPP’s recent outcry over alleged acts of persecution by the Mahama administration, arguing that their eight-year tenure under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was marred by a blatant disregard for the rule of law.

Alluding to figurative speech, the MP declared that the NDC “would certainly not take lessons on morality from a brothel,” while reaffirming his party’s commitment to good governance and urging collective vigilance by Ghanaians against illegality.

The MP who described himself as a staunch advocate for good governance, asserted his commitment to accountability.

“I am a Member of Parliament. I am an advocate for good governance, and on any day, I would want to see many more Ghanaians speak to issues of accountability and call for the right things to be done,” he said.

“I will be one of the first—maybe among MPs or people within the NDC—to call out any act of illegality in my government if I feel strongly that, indeed, the government is not acting right,” he said.

However, he reserved his sharpest rebuke for the NPP, questioning their newfound moral stance just weeks after relinquishing power on January 7, 2025, following their defeat in the December 2024 elections.

The MP pointed to what he described as a hypocritical shift by the NPP, asking, “If all of a sudden, just a few days or weeks after handing over, the NPP now wants to teach us what constitutionalism and rule of law are, I ask: where were they in the eight years when we saw these unprecedented levels?”

“For eight years, we saw a blatant disregard for the rule of law in this country under President Akufo-Addo and the erstwhile NPP administration. We saw people being held in police custody even when a court had given an order for them to be freed. We saw an unprecedented number of raids by national security on people’s properties and homes,” he recounted specific instances under the Akufo-Addo administration that he believes undermine their credibility.

The MP’s remarks come amid heightened political tensions following the NDC’s return to power, with the NPP accusing the Mahama government of targeting its members through arrests and investigations related to alleged corruption during their tenure.

Edem Agbana however dismissed these criticisms as disingenuous, asserting, “The pretence—as though these people who are now raising issues about the legality of ORAL and what have you just woke up all of a sudden from their eight years of slumber and never saw the things that I’m talking about—is unacceptable.”

Bench Warrant For Akwatia MP Over Contempt

Ernest Yaw Kumi

A High Court in Koforidua in the Eastern Region, has convicted the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi for contempt of court.

The MP, according to court documents, defied the interim injunction placed on him by the court, by presenting himself to be sworn in as a member of the 9th Parliament on January 7, 2025.

The court had temporarily barred Mr. Kumi from presenting himself to be sworn following a legal challenge against his election.

Justice Senyo Amedahe, the presiding judge, after convicting the MP in absentia, also issued a warrant for his arrest for failing to appear before the court for sentencing.

In spite of attempts by the Minority Caucus in Parliament to justify the absence of their colleague in court, the presiding judge was of the view that Mr. Kumi willfully disregarded the court’s authority.

The court did not accept the excuse that the MP was occupied with parliamentary duties hence his inability to attend court.

The court cited evidence of willful defiance by the MP and, therefore, held that Mr. Kumi acted in contempt of court.

Mr. Kumi was restrained by the court from presenting himself to be sworn in due to the suit challenging his election.

Despite the pendency of the interim injunction, Mr. Kumi went ahead to take the oath of office in Parliament on January 7, 2025.

Certiorari Application

His lawyers later filed a suit at the Supreme Court seeking to set aside the interim injunction and also prohibit the judge from hearing any case relating to the MP.

They argue that the interim injunction was wrongly issued against their client, as the interim application was attached to a wrongful court process.

It is the case of the MP and his legal representatives that at the time the election petition was filed against his election, the results of the December 7, 2024 parliamentary election had not yet been gazetted, hence the suit was null and void.

However, the Supreme Court could not hear the matter as it turned out that the defendants and interested parties in the case were not served with the process.

A panel of five presided over by Justice Gabriel Pwamang subsequently adjourned the matter indefinitely.
