Gov’t Raises Salary By 10% Amidst 23.5% Inflation, Yet CLOGSAG Chose to Protest Against Registrar

0

Political activist and convenor of FixTheCountry Movement Oliver Barker-Vormawor has criticised the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) over what he describes as misplaced priorities regarding worker’s welfare.

In a post on X(formerly Twitter), Oliver Barker-Vormawor expressed concern over the significant loss in real income value for public sector workers following salary negotiations led by the Organised Labour. He pointed out that while Ghana’s inflation rate stood at 23.50% in December 2024 and expected to rise, the agreed salary increments for public workers was only 10%, leading to a real salary value loss of 13.50%.

He questioned CLOGSAG’s silence on the economic hardship facing its members, stating, “Inflation as at December 2024: 23.50% (bound to rise further). Salary Increase negotiated by Organized Labour as at today is 10%. Salary loss in real value: 13.50% (bound to rise)

CLOGSAG, what are you going to do about this. You know that the average worker is worse off by this agreement right? But those who gave you that Agreement are themselves Article 71 office holders. You know that right?”

Oliver Barker-Vormawor further expressed disappointment in the association’s decision to rather embark on a strike over the appointment of a new registrar of Births and Deaths by President John Dramani Mahama, instead of addressing the declining financial conditions of workers.

Mocking their move, he wrote, “We are going to Strike. The NDC president has appointed an NDC man as Registrar of Births and Deaths”

His comments have sparked debate on social media, with many questioning CLOGSAG’s priorities and whether it is truly advocating for the interests of workers of being swayed by political considerations.

Ghanaians neglect their own, allowing Nigerians to claim Highlife

0

Ghanaian musician Ben Brainy has sparked an important conversation about Ghana’s music industry following his recent appearance on Bryt TV with El Baby during his music video premiere.

Addressing a growing concern, Ben Brainy pointed out that Ghanaians do not hold onto their cultural and musical heritage long enough, which has allowed Nigerians to dominate and claim ownership of Highlife music.

Highlife, one of Ghana’s most treasured musical genres, has played a crucial role in shaping African music. With pioneers like E.T. Mensah, Nana Ampadu, Amakye Dede, and Daddy Lumba, the genre has long been a symbol of Ghanaian identity. However, Ben Brainy believes Ghana has not done enough to preserve and promote it.

According to the HomeTown Records signee, Ghanaian musicians often abandon their traditional sounds in pursuit of newer trends, leaving a gap that Nigerian artists have strategically filled. By fusing Highlife with Afrobeat, Nigerians have successfully rebranded and commercialized the genre, gaining international recognition while Ghana struggles to maintain its influence.

“We don’t hold onto our own for long. We started Highlife, but now it’s the Nigerians who are making it big with it. We leave what we have and chase other things,” Ben Brainy lamented during the interview.

He urged Ghanaian musicians and industry players to be more intentional about preserving and promoting Ghana’s musical identity rather than allowing foreign influences to overshadow it. He emphasized that if Ghanaians want to retain ownership of Highlife, they must invest in the genre, push it globally, and take pride in their cultural heritage.

During his appearance on Bryt TV, Ben Brainy also premiered the official music video for his latest song, Location. The song, which blends Afrobeat and Highlife influences, showcases his signature sound and storytelling ability. The visuals complement the song’s theme, adding a vibrant and engaging experience for fans.

Spain’s ex-football boss Luis Rubiales fined for World Cup kiss

0

Spain's former football federation boss Luis Rubiales Spain’s former football federation boss Luis Rubiales

Spain’s former football federation boss Luis Rubiales has been found guilty of sexual assault for kissing player Jenni Hermoso without her consent and ordered to pay a fine of €10,800 (£8,942), Spain’s High Court has ruled.

He was acquitted of coercion, for allegedly trying to pressure Hermoso into saying publicly that the kiss was consensual.

As Spain’s players received their medals after defeating England in Sydney to win the 2023 World Cup, Rubiales grabbed Hermoso by the head and kissed her on the lips.

The incident triggered protests and calls for the resignation of Rubiales, who has said he will appeal against the verdict.

The ruling also banned Rubiales from going within a 200m radius of Hermoso and from communicating with her for one year, the court said in a statement.

Three of Rubiales’s former colleagues who were also on trial, accused of colluding in the alleged coercion – Jorge Vilda, coach of the World Cup-winning side, Rubén Rivera, the Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF)’s former head of marketing, and Albert Luque, former sporting director – were cleared of those charges.

Prosecutors had demanded a prison sentence for Rubiales, who last week told a court he was “absolutely sure” Hermoso had given her consent before he kissed her.

He described the kiss as an “act of affection”, adding that in the moment it was “something completely spontaneous”.

In her testimony earlier this month, Hermoso insisted that she had not given Rubiales permission and that the incident had “stained one of the happiest days of my life”.

She told the court in Madrid: “My boss was kissing me, and this shouldn’t happen in any social or work setting.”

“A kiss on the lips is only given when I decide so,” she said at the time.

Rubiales was accused of sexual assault and of trying to coerce Hermoso into saying the kiss had been consensual.

The incident was witnessed by millions of television viewers and an entire stadium after the Spanish women’s team won the 2023 World Cup.

The ensuing uproar gave momentum to a “Me Too”-style movement in the Spanish women’s game, in which players sought to combat sexism and achieve parity with their male peers.

Rubiales resigned in September 2023 following weeks of resisting pressure to stand down, and after Fifa suspended him and Spanish prosecutors opened an investigation.

You Think Running A Country is A Comedy Show or What? Netizens Drag DKB After Expressing Hope for A Political Appointment Under Mahama

0

Popular Ghanaian comedian, Derrick Kobina Bonney aka DKB, has been dragged by netizens online after calling for the new NDC government under President, John Dramani Mahama, to consider him for a political apppointment.

DKB, who heavily campaigned for the NDC prior to their win in the 2024 elections, said he hopes that the President will remember him and bless him with any sort of appointment. He indicated his readiness to serve his motherland if given the opportunity.

DKB made his wishes known during an interview with Kojo Daasebre on the AM Club on Max TV Gh.

“I am waiting for an appointment and hoping to be remembered by the President,” he said in the interview.

DKB went on to reveal how his admiration for Mahama grew to the highest level, recounting how Mahama once told one of his jokes on a political platform and named him as his favourite Ghanaian comedian.

Bonney described the moment as one of the highlights of his life so far. He dedicated himself even more to the NDC in the wake of that and campaigned for the party ahead of the 2024 elections. In one infamous moment, DKB shot, edited and published his own skit on the NDC’s largest campaign promise, the 24-hour economy, which was so heavily criticized that he was forced to take it down. DKB did this on his own without being contracted by the NDC hence he feels it’s his time to be rewarded by the party for his loyalty.

Watch the video below..

Despite DKB’s earnest words, social media users dragged him for trying to become a political appointee.

“You think running a country is a comedy show or what? Jokes on you!” one fan wrote.

‘Once the economy improves, we’ll pay you better’ – Mahama assures workers

0

President John Dramani Mahama has called on labour unions to be moderate in their wage demands for 2025, assuring them that once the economy stabilises, he will ensure higher remuneration for workers.

Mahama made the appeal during a National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, which he attended.

Following negotiations, the committee agreed on a 10% increase in the base pay for 2025—the second wage adjustment in less than a year after a 23% hike in 2024.

Addressing union leaders, Mahama stressed the need for patience and collective effort in rebuilding the economy.

“I’ll just appeal to you that let’s tamper our demands for this year, and once we get out of the woods, we’ll set good targets to bring inflation down so that the cost of everything will come down,” he stated.

He further emphasized his administration’s commitment to fair wages, proposing an independent emoluments committee to determine salaries for all workers, including the President.

“We’re prepared to walk this journey with you, but let’s reach an agreement on this one so that we’ll use this year as the year of correction. Once the economy moves in the direction we are hoping for, maybe if you suggest 35%, I’ll support you because it will affect my pay too,” Mahama assured.

Sports development, a cornerstone under Mahama’s 24-hour economy-Mahama Ayariga

0

By Godwill Arthur Mensah

Accra, Feb. 20, GNA – Mr Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader of Parliament, has said the Mahama-led government would make sports development a cornerstone under its 24-hour economy policy.

He said to ensure this, plans were underway to negotiate a deal with SuperSports, a renowned South Africa-based sport channel, to provide coverage for the Ghana Premier League.

The move, he said, would enable Ghanaian football talents to be marketed across Africa and the globe to secure contracts in major leagues worldwide.

The Majority Leader, also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, made this known when contributing to a statement made by Mr Dickson Kyere-Duah, the MP for Berekum West, on the floor of Parliament.

Mr Kyere-Duah’s statement on the floor of the House, raised concerns about the creeping hooliganism in Ghana football and called for stringent security protocols at the various stadia across the country.

He referred to the disturbances that occurred at a football match at Nsoatre between Nsoatreman United and Kotoko Football Club, leading to the untimely death of Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly called “Pooley”.

He called for sensitisation of soccer fans to understand that football “was not a life and death” affair but an avenue for friendship.

While contributing to the statement, Madam Millicent Yeboah Amankwah, the MP for Sunyani West, whose constituency the disturbances occurred added her voice to the call to ensure strict security protocols at the country’s stadia.

She expressed her condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased and urged the security agencies to bring the perpetrators to book.

Mr Sammi Awuku, the MP for Akuapim North, while contributing to the statement, suggested a ban on siting drinking bars within the precincts of any football stadium in Ghana.

He said that would prevent soccer fans from patronising alcohol being sold near football stadiums.

Comms ministry meets ecosystem partners to chart definitive path for Ghana’s startup and innovation sector

0

Ghana stands on the brink of an innovation breakthrough. With a wealth of research talent and a thriving entrepreneurial spirit, the country has all the ingredients for technological and economic transformation.

Yet, a critical gap remains—the disconnect between research, innovation and commercialisation. Far too many groundbreaking ideas never make it beyond the lab, failing to reach the markets where they can drive real impact.

To change this, a major push is underway to establish a solid legal and policy regulatory framework that will unlock Ghana’s innovation potential. Leading this charge is Heritors Labs in collaboration with The RISA Fund, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), and key industry and government stakeholders.

The collective goal is to facilitate the finalization of the long-awaited Ghana Innovation and Startups Bill—a landmark policy designed to empower innovators, attract investment, and drive research and innovation commercialisation.

In furtherance of this, leadership of Heritors Labs, along with officials from the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST), the Ghana Innovation and Research Commercialisation Centre (GIRC Centre), and the consultants from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) working on the draft Ghana Innovation and Startups Bill, paid a courtesy call on the minister of communication, digital technology and innovations, Mr. Sam Nartey George.

Discussions were centered on outlining a strategic roadmap for advancing the draft bill, emphasising its critical role in shaping Ghana’s innovation landscape.

“The bill must be finalised and presented to Parliament by July 2025 before the legislative recess,” the minister said.

He added: “We must activate the bill process by May 2025 to ensure timely progress.” The Honourable Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and inclusivity, stressing that “a wider public engagement process will be initiated before Cabinet submission to garner comprehensive stakeholder buy-in.”

Currently, the bill exists as a “zero draft”—a foundational version that needs refinement and stakeholder input before submission.

According to Mr. Christopher Lartey, Head of the Ghana Innovation and Research Commercialisation (GIRC), the draft will be shared in phases, undergoing a rigorous three-step validation process at the committee, zonal, and national levels.

This meticulous approach ensures that the bill aligns with the needs and aspirations of researchers, innovators, startups, industry leaders, and government policymakers. It’s not just about passing a law—it’s about creating a lasting framework that will fuel innovation, attract investment, and drive sustainable economic growth.

Mr. Nashiru Salifu, Deputy Director of Science and Technology at the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST), reaffirmed the ministry’s unwavering support, stating, “MEST recognises the strategic importance of this bill in positioning Ghana as a leading hub for innovation and entrepreneurship in Africa.”

The recognition of Heritors Labs’ role as a key enabler in this process was also evident as a senior government official noted: “Heritors Labs, in partnership with The RISA Fund and FCDO, has been instrumental in aligning international best practices with Ghana’s unique innovation ecosystem.”

Mr. Kofi Ocloo, Vice President of Heritors Labs, stated, “The comprehensive report presented sheds light on the current innovation landscape in Ghana. By highlighting these challenges and opportunities faced by startups and innovators within the Ghanaian innovation economy, Heritors Labs has gathered critical data that provides a solid foundation for the draft bill that genuinely addresses the needs of Ghana’s innovation ecosystem.”

“Through collaborative efforts with policymakers, industry leaders, and technical experts, Heritors Labs continues to shape a policy landscape that fosters a conducive environment for startups, researchers, and investors alike,” he added.

Heritors Labs, with the support of FCDO and the RISA Fund, has pledged to continue providing funding until the Innovation and Startups Bill is passed in Parliament, helping to drive the successful implementation of the bill. Other key government officials and technical experts at the meeting included

Present at the meeting were: Mr. Alexander Arphul, Chief Director of the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology & Innovations (MOCDTI); Barbara Barnes, Director of Research, Statistics, and Information Management (RSIM) at MOCDTI.

The team from Heritors Labs were represented by Kofi Ocloo—Vice President, Emmanuel Amartey—General Manager, and Barbara Aidoo–Programme Engagement Lead. Others were consultants Roland Asare, Mavis Akuffobea-Essilfie, Gordon Akon-Yamga, and Wilhemina Quaye, who are leading the drafting process of the bill.

The Reset I Voted for – Social Media Users Cheer on As Ashanti Regional Minister Gives Galamseyers Two Weeks Ultimatum

0

The newly appointed Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has sparked social media joy after giving illegal miners (galamsey) workers in his region two weeks to vacate their sites or face arrest.

Dr. Amoakohene, during a press conference, announced that anyone involved in galamsey in the Ashanti Region has two weeks to leave the site and find a different profession to engage in because at the expiry of the ultimatum, all hell will break loose.

He said that unlike the previous President, Nana Akufo-Addo, who condoned the menace, President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to eradicate it and he will do his best to ensure that vision becomes a reality.

He said: “Anyone in the forest reserve mining should vacate those places. We are giving them up to two weeks. If you are mining within the forest reserves and you don’t want to be on the bad side of the law, you have two weeks to leave the place,”

Illegal mining locally known as galamsey has become a menace in Ghana within the past few years, particularly in the second term of the former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Things became so bad at a point that most water bodies in Ghana became polluted, to the point the Ghana Water Company announced they could no longer safely purify water in certain areas.

Social media users, reacting to the news, were ecstatic that a government was finally taking action.

“Action not words 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Kudos honorable minister 👏🏾” one user said.

Teenagers remanded over GH¢41,000 gold theft, Police suspect larger syndicate

0

The prosecutor in the teenage lovers’ gold theft case has told the court that the police suspect a larger criminal syndicate with several possible accomplices involved in the crime.

Chief Inspector Gilbert Abagna Anyongo, the prosecutor, therefore, appealed for more time to conduct further investigations into the case.

He also stated that the police needed additional time to verify the true ages of the suspects.

The Assin Fosu District Court, where the two appeared today, remanded them in juvenile cells to reappear on March 5, 2025.

The two teenage lovers were arrested for allegedly stealing gold and GH¢41,000 from a gold shop at Twifo Praso in the Twifo Ati Morkwa District of the Central Region.

The suspects, who both claim to be 17 years old, were remanded into juvenile cells by the court, presided over by His Worship Abdul Majid Iliasu.

Chief Inspector Anyongo informed the court that the police were also investigating the true ages of the suspects, as there are concerns that they may be older than they claim.

The girl had initially told police she was 15 years old but later revised her age to 17 years, while police suspect her boyfriend may be older.

He further revealed that preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects had been planning the theft for some time, monitoring the gold shop’s activities before executing the crime.

The two were arrested on Sunday, February 16, 2024, by the Twifo Praso District Police Command, led by District Commander Superintendent Charles Addae Boateng.

The girl was arrested at her hideout in Egyaa near Anomabo, in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region, while her boyfriend was apprehended at a separate location following a tip-off.

Reports indicate that CCTV footage captured the girl stealing from the gold shop before allegedly distributing the stolen money among her accomplices, including her boyfriend.

The police have urged anyone with information about the theft or the suspects to come forward and assist with investigations as efforts continue to track down the remaining accomplices.

We are afraid Kotoko fans will revenge – Nsoatreman player breaks silence on Pooley’s death

0

Nsoatreman FC midfielder Michael Ackah Ballack has expressed concern over potential retaliation from Asante Kotoko fans following the tragic stabbing of Kotoko supporter Nana Pooley.

Speaking with GhanaSportsPage, Ackah Ballack admitted that the incident has created an unsettling atmosphere among players, emphasizing their hopes for justice to be served swiftly.

“We are human beings, so obviously, we are afraid. That is why we hope that justice will be served so that it will take pressure off us,” he said.

Ackah also revealed that players were unaware of the incident immediately after the game and only learned about it in the dressing room.

“For us as players, even after we fought on the pitch, we all spoke normally in the dressing room before we got to hear the news.”

Ackah Ballack also highlighted the unpredictable nature of football careers, noting that some Nsoatreman players could end up playing for Kotoko in the future.

“For some of us, Kotoko might sign us one day because that’s the nature of our job,” he added.

Pooley, a devoted Kotoko fan, tragically lost his life earlier this month, during a league game between Nsoatreman and Asante Kotoko on February 2, 2025.

Asante Kotoko, who put all first-team activities on hold, following the incident have resumed training following a meeting with GFA.

Promote your show, don’t try to compete with Dennis and Alordia!

Artiste manager, Nana Poku Ashis Artiste manager, Nana Poku Ashis

Artiste manager, Nana Poku Ashis, has cautioned Stonebwoy and his management against rivaling established UK-based event promoters, Dennis of Akwaaba UK and Alordia.

Speaking on Hitz FM on February 20, 2025, Ashis emphasised that Stonebwoy’s team should focus on promoting their show instead of worrying about the ‘clashing dates’ with other events.

He questioned the logic behind Stonebwoy’s manager Chief Stylz accusing others of sabotage.

“Why should somebody fight about this one? Do your show and allow the other person do his show. We have various brands that’s going to be performing on the night. Whoever touches whoever’s heart, that’s where they will go.

“Why are you saying they are sabotaging? Do your homework, do your research, do what you have to do. So he should drop his show for you to go on?” he stated.

He further emphasised that Stonebwoy, as a strong brand, should remain focused and avoid distractions, adding that, this is the perfect opportunity to prove that Ghana can also shut down the UK with two events on the same day.

“You’re a mighty Stonebwoy. Stand on your toes, stop the talking, and promote your show. Unless this is a strategic plan to generate noise, it’s unnecessary,” Ashis added.

Ashis also pointed out that it is risky to rival individuals like Dennis and Alordia, who have been at the forefront of Ghanaian events in the UK for decades and have massive connections.

“Dennis has been doing this since 1998, and Alordia UK has a solid database. These are not just anybodies; they are event promoters who know the trade better than you. You cannot rival them; you will fail,” he cautioned.

He advised Stonebwoy’s team to leverage their own database and ensure they have a clear understanding of their target audience.

“If they don’t have a database of the kind of people they can attract to the auditorium, they are wrestling in vain. Dennis and Alordia have held Ghanaian music in the UK for years when there was nothing for us to celebrate. Don’t try to compete with them,” Ashis concluded.

Speaking exclusively to GhanaWeb TV’s George Ayisi, he lamented the difficulty in finding landlords willing to accept rent advances for six months or less.

“Today, how many people are ready to rent their properties for you to pay six months or less? Everybody is looking for one year, two years and in some instances even five years. To get a one-year rent advance, which is even a clear violation of the law, [is difficult]… and we must have the system doing something about it. We have to do something about it,” he remarked.

He expressed frustration over the financial strain the rental regime imposes on tenants.

“If you’re looking for a single room as a young National Service Personnel or as a student or a young graduate, you are likely to pay between GH₵100 and GH₵1500, when your National Service allowance is just GH₵715, which will be for a month. And so, it means that you need double or more than double your allowance to even pay for rent,” he added.

He further quizzed, “What happens to feeding, what happens to transportation? And so, the rent regime here is very problematic because of the exorbitant charges within the sector.”

Beyond the financial burden, he pointed out how weak enforcement of rent laws leave tenants vulnerable to exploitation.

“How many people are ready to rent their properties for you to pay six months or less? Everybody is looking for one year, two years and in some instances even five years, which is even a clear violation of the law that is virtually not in existence. And we must have the system doing something about it. We have to do something about it, because this rent advance of one year, two years, how are you able to pay GH¢5,000 a month for 36 months, which is three years, 24 months which is two years?

“Where would the average Ghanaian like me, like young graduates, where would they get the money to pay for that? It is really difficult to afford that. So, that also must be worked on. There are virtually no regulations for the sector even when there are disputes,” he added.

Edem Agbana urged all stakeholders to take immediate actions to reform the rent system and bridge the housing deficit, insisting that without concrete measures, housing will remain inaccessible for the average Ghanaian.

‘Tread carefully’ – ISSER Director warns BoG on reinstating closed banks

0

Director of ISSER, Professor Peter Quartey Director of ISSER, Professor Peter Quartey

The Director of the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER), Professor Peter Quartey, has cautioned the government and the Bank of Ghana (BoG) against hastily reinstating licenses for local banks affected by the financial sector cleanup.

According to him, a rushed process could destabilize the banking sector and undermine confidence in the economy.

Speaking in an interview with Citi Business News, Prof. Quartey called for caution, stating, “We should tread carefully. Reversing the Central Bank’s decisions too quickly could set a dangerous precedent. If anyone disagrees with the decision, they should challenge it in court.”

His comments come amid growing debate over the reinstatement of revoked bank licenses, particularly following the appointment of Dr. Johnson Asiama as the new Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

Prominent figures such as Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, founder of GN Bank, and Seidu Agongo, majority shareholder of Heritage Bank, have consistently argued that their banks’ closures were unjust.

However, former BoG Governor Dr. Ernest Addison, before his early retirement, firmly opposed reinstating the revoked licenses.

With foreign entities now controlling two-thirds of Ghana’s 23 commercial banks, concerns over the decline in local ownership within the financial sector have intensified.

Prof. Quartey stressed the importance of due diligence, stating, “We’ve heard calls for further investigation. Let’s not rush to reinstate individuals who may have caused financial losses to the state.”

The Bank of Ghana has repeatedly urged market participants to comply fully with regulatory requirements, emphasizing that adherence to guidelines is crucial for enhancing transparency and mitigating risks in the financial sector.

‘I was attending to a medical emergency’ – Kurt Okraku addresses absence during Pooley’s tragic incident

Kurt Okraku is the President of the GFA Kurt Okraku is the President of the GFA

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has addressed concerns regarding his absence during recent events in Ghanaian football, including the tragic stabbing of Francis Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley, during Asante Kotoko’s match against Nsoatreman on February 2, 2025.

On Thursday, February 20, 2025, during his visit to Asante Kotoko, Okraku set the record straight about his recent absence, explaining that his trip abroad was not related to seeking a spot on the CAF Executive Committee, as rumored, but instead was driven by a combination of official business and a personal health matter.

“When the incident [Pooley’s death] happened, I was out of the jurisdiction, not to campaign for a slot on the CAF Executive Committee, but to work for the FA and to address a medical issue,” Okraku stated.

His remarks come in response to criticism from some football stakeholders and fans who accused him of prioritizing personal ambitions over urgent matters affecting Ghanaian football.

Okraku’s meeting with Kotoko signals an effort to strengthen ties with the club and reassure stakeholders of the FA’s commitment to addressing the challenges facing Ghanaian football.

No Integrity, Very Shameful – Ghanaians Slam Maurice Ampaw After Making U-Turn on Pledge to Leave Ghana if John mahama Wins

0

Social media users have slammed Ghanaian legal practicioner and media personality, Maurice Ampaw, after announcing that he is no longer going to relocate to Togo as he had promised to if ex-President, John Dramani Mahama, won the 2024 elections.

According to netizens, Ampaw has displayed a lack of integrity and shame by refusing to honor his promise.

In the lead up to the 2024 elections, Ampaw, who was a presenter on Wontumi TV – owned by the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako aka Chairman Wontumi – loudly proclaimed that if Mahama won the election, he would relocate from Ghana to Togo.

According to him, there is no universe in which ex-President Mahama would win the elections ahead of Bawumia. He added that in the unlikely event that Mahama is able to pull off a victory, he would not stay in Ghana.

Unfortunately for Ampaw, Mahama won the elections in a comfortable fashion, dispatching Vice President and NPP’s Presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Following the elections, Ampaw has now spoken out about his promise. According to him, he was simply playing a political game and there’s no way he would leave Ghana to stay in a less developed country like Togo.

“I won’t go to Togo. Ghana is far better than Togo. I don’t even have a passport, I’ve never traveled before,” Ampaw said in an interview.

Akufo-Addo’s policies were a disaster for Ghana’s financial stability – Mahama

0

President John Mahama has launched a sharp rebuke against the former Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, accusing it of recklessly mismanaging the economy.

Addressing a National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment—where the government announced a 10% increase in base pay for public sector workers, effective March 2025—Mahama expressed outrage at the economic state he inherited.

Domelevo Criticises Public Officials For Failing To Declare Assets

0

Daniel Yaw Domelevo

The former Auditor General, Daniel Yaw Domelevo, has spoken out against many public officials, especially judges, for not following the laws that require them to declare their assets, which is a requirement stated in the constitution.

He bemoaned Ghana’s corruption culture and the failure of major organisations to set a good example during an interview with the media.

“We are not suspicious of them (public officials), but they have proven time and again that they have been stealing the public funds. That’s the part where the evidence abounds,” Mr.  Domelevo said.

“Look at the Auditor General’s report. You see that people holding public funds have been always misappropriating or using the money for their benefit. Put the Auditor General’s report aside. Many of them have been in office for just four years, a maximum of eight years, but see how filthy rich they are.

“They are terribly rich. And if you look at their salaries, I used to tell some of the MPs that as Auditor General, my salary is bigger than yours, but you seem to be 100 times richer than me. How did you make it?” He stressed that the issue goes beyond mere suspicion.

“The truth, on the ground, is that they have been stealing public funds. That is why we want to know how much you had before coming and how much you had on your exit. I’m not saying all of them, but there are some of them who clearly have been abusing their office,” he explained.

He went on to express discontent with the failure of regulatory bodies to keep the judiciary in check.

“When people complained or petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), I was completely disappointed when it just said that, well, there are no punishments prescribed in any law for them or that Act (1998) 550 does not prescribe any punishment. So go and sin no more,” he stated.

Mr. Domelevo argued that, “I thought that if the Constitution says you should do something before you can enter office or assume office, and you didn’t do that before coming to office, you are occupying the office unconstitutionally.”

He drew a comparison using the example of presidential inaugurations, “For instance, could President Mahama just wake up on January 7, 2025, and say, ‘I’ve been voted for as president, so I’m going to start as president. I don’t want swearing-in?’ No, it cannot happen.

“But how come that we judiciously comply with those requirements, even including the swearing-in of ministers, but then asset declaration, which is supposed to be done by the same Constitution, is neglected?” he queried.

Ghana’s economy was ‘criminally mishandled’ under Akufo-Addo – Mahama

0

President John Mahama has strongly criticized the previous Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, accusing it of “criminally mishandling” the economy.

Speaking at the National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment—where the government announced a 10% increase in base pay for public sector workers, effective March 2025—Mahama expressed shock at the economic mismanagement he has uncovered.

“We all knew the economy was in crisis, but some of the things I am uncovering myself have been a criminal mishandling of our economy. Ghana is now a crime scene,” he stated.

“How can a government be so reckless? I cannot understand,” he added.

This pay rise marks the second adjustment in less than a year, with the last one occurring in 2024 when the government approved a 23% increase aimed at addressing rising cost of living.

Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Rashid Pelpuo in his announcement said the increment takes effect on March 1, 2025

On February 4, 2025, the National Tripartite Committee (NTC), comprising representatives from the government, employers, and organised labour/associations, began negotiations to determine the minimum wage for the year 2025.

These negotiations are critical, as the minimum wage serves as the baseline for wages across various sectors, particularly impacting low-income workers in both the formal and informal sectors of the economy.

The agreed minimum wage will also influence future deliberations on base pay for public sector employees, a process scheduled to follow the completion of the current minimum wage discussions.

‘Why should Mahama sack Dampare?’ – Agradaa claps back at Owusu-Bempah

Nana Agradaa is the General Overseer of the Heaven Way Chapel Nana Agradaa is the General Overseer of the Heaven Way Chapel

Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, has questioned Rev. Isaac Owusu-Bempah after the latter called for President John Dramani Mahama to remove IGP Dr George Akuffo Dampare from office.

In a video sighted by GhanaWeb on February 20, 2025, Nana Agradaa noted that Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare had done nothing wrong to be forcibly removed from office.

She emphasised that Owusu-Bempah is speaking out of bitterness because Dampare arrested him for threatening her life.

“What is your interest if the NDC government decides to maintain Dampare for the next four years? You are calling for his removal because you brandished guns and knives to threaten me, which the law doesn’t permit, and nobody is above the law… He arrested you because of what you did,” she said.

Agradaa reiterated that despite Dampare issuing her arrest, she still respects him because the IGP was only doing his job.

“IGP Dampare made me spend 40 days in cells, but that doesn’t mean I am going to hate him. I will never hate the IGP because whatever happened to me was influenced by powerful people above him. I know he wouldn’t have treated me the way he did if he wasn’t asked to do so,” she noted.

Agradaa further called Owusu-Bempah a false prophet after he publicly disclosed that the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, influenced him to dislike the then-opposition leader, John Dramani Mahama.

“You are claiming that the same Chairman Wontumi made you dislike John Mahama, and you stood on your altar to falsely prophesy about Mahama, meanwhile, you are a liar,” she added.

NPP MPs drag High Court judge to the Supreme Court

0

NPP MP for Akwatia Ernest Yaw Kumi was convicted by a High Court in Koforidua NPP MP for Akwatia Ernest Yaw Kumi was convicted by a High Court in Koforidua

The Minority Caucus of Parliament has taken legal action against the High Court justice who convicted one of its members, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, by filing a case before the Supreme Court.

Addressing the press at Parliament on Thursday, February 20, 2025, the MP for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, reading a statement on behalf of the caucus, stated that multiple legal actions had been taken in response to the judge’s ruling, including an application before the Supreme Court.

He added that an appeal and a stay of execution had also been filed against the ruling.

“At this stage, let me further state that legal steps have been taken, and a notice of appeal has been filed against the High Court’s ruling at the Court of Appeal. An application for a stay of execution pending appeal has also been filed at High Court Number 3 in Koforidua.

“Moreover, all parties to the prohibition application, including the judge, His Lordship Justice Emmanuel Senyo Amedahe, who is the respondent in this application before the Supreme Court, have been duly served. Further legal steps will be taken, and the Minority Caucus in Parliament will keep the Ghanaian public informed on the way forward,” he said.

The Weija-Gbawe legislator also argued that the High Court judge erred in his ruling.

He stated that it was improper for the judge to demand the filing of an appearance in a quasi-criminal matter.

“When someone previously came before you, you allowed the person to open a phone to provide details of a certain WhatsApp message or publication. But when a lawyer stands in for a client in a contempt matter, you insist the lawyer must file an appearance in a quasi-criminal case? Eii, Justice Senyo Amedahe,” he said.

Background:

A Koforidua High Court issued a bench warrant for Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia in the Eastern Region, after convicting him of contempt of court.

According to multiple reports, the bench warrant was issued after Kumi failed to appear in court.

The MP had disobeyed an interim injunction issued on January 7, 2025, which barred him from being sworn in and admitted as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Akwatia constituency due to an ongoing legal dispute over his election.

Despite the court order, Kumi presented himself in Parliament and was sworn in on January 7, 2025.

Presiding Judge Justice Senyo Amedahe ruled that the convict had consistently failed to appear in court throughout the contempt case.

He also dismissed a letter from the Minority Caucus, which argued that the MP was occupied with parliamentary duties and, therefore, could not attend court sessions.

The judge rejected the letter, stating that accepting it would contradict his ruling.

I Stepped Away So The Show Could Go On – Nedu Sets Record Straight On Podcast Exit

Nigerian media personality, Chinedu Ani Emmanuel, popularly known as Nedu, has clarified the reason for stepping down from The Honest Bunch podcast.

This occurred following the controversy surrounding a recent episode featuring reality TV star Deeone, who alleged that social media critic VeryDarkMan was attracted to men.

Stan Dogbe, Woezor TV and the Presidential TV

0

Manasseh Azure Writes

Some people have raised concerns over what they describe as the taking over of the state broadcaster’s role by Woezor TV, a television channel owned by the Deputy Chief of Staff in Charge of Operations at the Office of the President, Stan Xoese Dogbe.

Stan Dogbe has, in a Facebook post, explained that no station house reporting from the presidency, including the state-owned GTV, has been stopped from taking live feed from the Office of the President. If that is the case, I see no problem if Woezor TV, like GTV, TV3 or JoyNews, has access to live feed and decides to stream live instead of making news out of events at the presidency. Here’s the comment I wrote under that post:

“If GTV, JoyNews and others have unfettered access just like Woezor TV, then there’s nothing to worry about. If they choose to record and play national events or events at the presidency, and Woezor decides to stream live, there’s no problem. It would be worrisome if others are denied access to live broadcasts of presidential events and Woezor is given access because of its owner’s influence. From what I know, programming, advertising and other commercial interests would not allow many TV stations to carry events live even if they have access. If Woezor has the space to do that, I see nothing wrong with it. A problem would only arise if access is rigged in favour of Woezor TV.”

In another post on the subject, however, Julius Ofori Boadu PHd drew attention to the president’s social media handles, which also broadcast with Woezor TV’s logo. For me, that’s where we should ask questions.

In the past, I don’t remember the social media handles streaming with TV stations’ logos on the videos. Video’s from the presidency used to have the logo of the Jubilee House on them. I don’t know the policy governing live broadcasts on the official social media pages or YouTube channels of the presidency, but this is what I think should happen.

The Office of the President has a communication bureau with staffers. They should stream their own events and meetings from the presidency. If it is a national event, such as Independence Day or an inauguration, and they don’t have the resources or capacity to undertake the complex production, the presidency’s social media handles should stream from the official live feed for the state function. In this case, the state-owned GTV has been providing those services.

Woezor TV, like any other media house, should be free to stream the occasions live on its station.

We cannot pretend that a TV station with its logo on the president’s official channels doesn’t enjoy undue advantage over the rest. The Office of the President should also not be seen to be endorsing a particular platform and giving it undue advantage over others.

And the Deputy Chief of Staff could put himself in a conflict of interest situation if his private TV station is the one being “advertised” on the president’s social media and YouTube handles. His position means he can influence who provides official live feeds for presidential and national events.

For Stan Dogbe, it is in his interest to avoid such controversies. In Mahama’s first term, some staff of the Information Service Department held a press conference and accused him of taking their job, following the 2016 Independence Day brochure saga. He has a mandate to fulfill and should not allow such controversies to overshadow his role.

Even Stan Dogbe’s “enemies” would confess that he’s one of the most hard working person’s around President Mahama. He should not allow his hard work to be marred by avoidable controversies.

Let’s reduce expenditure to have enough resources for everyone – Mahama

0

President John Mahama has urged public sector institutions to cut their budgets to enable the government to gather enough resources for the benefit of all.

He stated that upon assuming office, he discovered that the Nana Akufo-Addo administration had poorly managed the economy over the years.

He said he is committed to doing his best to transform the system, with one of the approaches being the reduction of public expenditure.

“Cut expenditure as much as you can; we, as the government, will cut as much as we can because we must all make those sacrifices,” he said.

He added, “It is said, ‘let’s create and share,’ so let us begin preparing the meal now so we can share it once it’s ready.”

The President also emphasised that although he could choose to pretend that everything was fine with the economy, doing so would not benefit the people. “What effect will it have on Ghanaians if we behave like ostriches, bury our heads in the sand, and allow the economy to crash?” he questioned.

Mr Mahama made these remarks at the National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, where the government announced a 10% increase in the base pay for public sector workers, effective from January.

Ghana’s ex-finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta no longer considered a fugitive

0

This decision follows a formal communication from Mr Ofori-Atta’s legal representatives, confirming the ex-finance minister’s status and providing a definitive date for his return to the country.

On 12 February 2025, the OSP declared Mr Ofori-Atta a wanted individual and a fugitive from justice.

The declaration was made after he failed to provide a reasonable timeline for his return, despite being officially notified by the OSP that he was a suspect in various corruption and corruption-related investigations.

He had also been directed to appear in person at the OSP’s headquarters in Accra on a specified date for questioning.

According to the OSP, on 18 February 2025—six days after being declared wanted—Mr Ofori-Atta, through his lawyers, formally communicated a specific date for his voluntary return to Ghana.

“This marks a major shift from Mr Ofori-Atta’s previous intention of remaining outside the jurisdiction indefinitely,” the OSP stated.

Following this development, the OSP deemed Mr Ofori-Atta’s stated return date as reasonable and, accordingly, adjusted his scheduled appearance at its office.

Mr Ofori-Atta had previously informed the OSP, through his legal representatives, that he was receiving medical treatment abroad and would be staying overseas indefinitely. However, with the new development, the OSP has accepted his commitment to return and cooperate with investigations.

“Consequently, Mr Ofori-Atta has been removed from the OSP’s list of wanted persons, and the OSP ceases to consider him a fugitive from justice pending his voluntary return to the jurisdiction,” the statement added.

The OSP, however, cautioned that should Mr Ofori-Atta fail to return as per his stated date or refuse to appear before the OSP on the rescheduled date, he would be reinstated on the list of wanted persons.

The statement further warned that in such a scenario, the OSP would take all necessary legal measures to ensure his return and compliance with the ongoing investigations.

“If he fails to voluntarily return to the jurisdiction as stated, and if he fails to attend the OSP on the rescheduled date, he shall be re-entered on the OSP’s list of wanted persons.”

“The OSP shall then consider him a fugitive from justice and take all necessary legal steps to secure his return and attendance at the OSP at our own choosing,” the statement concluded.

While Mr Ofori-Atta’s removal from the wanted list marks a significant development, the corruption-related investigations against him remain active.

His cooperation with the OSP upon his return is expected to provide further clarity on the allegations levelled against him.

We are not stepping down for Stonebwoy to organise his concert – DJ Mensah

Ghanaian disc jockey and member of the Akwaaba UK group, DJ Mensah Ghanaian disc jockey and member of the Akwaaba UK group, DJ Mensah

Ghanaian disc jockey and member of the Akwaaba UK group, DJ Mensah, has stated that the group will not step aside for dancehall musician Stonebwoy to organise his upcoming album tour in the UK on the 8th March.

In an interview on Hitz FM on February 20, 2025, DJ Mensah emphasised that the Akwaaba group has no intention of sabotaging Stonebwoy’s concert.

However, they are not willing to change the date of their own event.

He reiterated that Akwaaba UK has been organising a concert every Independence Day and, as such, will not alter the scheduled date for their event.

“I am speaking for Akwaaba, and even as DJ Mensah, who works with Akwaaba, I just want to make things clear that we are not here to sabotage anybody. The event is going to happen, and we are not stepping down for anybody,” he said.

He also mentioned that the group is open to collaborating with Stonebwoy on future shows.

“Our doors are now open to talk about next year and Party in the Park. If you flashback, you will notice that we have been pushing Ghanaian music for the past 20 years,” he added.

His comments come in response to a recent allegation by Stonebwoy’s manager, Chief Stylz, that the Akwaaba UK team and Alordia are planning to “sabotage” the musician’s album tour in the UK.

Ghana is a crime scene

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concerns about the state of the economy and how it was managed by the previous government.

Addressing officials of Organised Labor in an engagement on Thursday, February 20, 2025, President Mahama lamented how poorly the economy was managed by his predecessor, describing the country as a “crime scene” due to the state of affairs.

According to him, he knew the economy was not in good condition and that the country had been plunged into crisis. However, he has been astounded by the extent of the rot since assuming office.

He accused the former government of being reckless in its handling of the economy, which has plunged the state into an even worse situation.

“We all knew the economy was in crisis, but some of the things I’m discovering myself, I mean, it’s been a criminal handling of our economy and Ghana is a crime scene. How a government can be so reckless, I cannot understand,” he said.

President Mahama additionally mentioned how the citizenry has developed a mistrust of the political class in the country, stemming from their self-centered behavior of not making sacrifices while other institutions are doing so to help cushion the economy.

He highlighted instances where various institutions are required to cut costs and make sacrifices, while the political class, in contrast, continues to engage in wasteful spending, to the detriment of the citizens.

The president assured, however, that under his administration, the days of wasteful spending and excessive expenditure will be over, as he is committed to implementing measures that will help the economy revive and bounce back.

“A certain distrust of the political class has arisen because it’s like when everybody else is tightening their belts, the political class is loosening its belts. But I want to assure you that we’re all going to tighten our belts and there will be no wasteful expenditure,” he added.

‘Working for eight hours for less than $1 is a shame’ – Former TUC boss

0

Dr. Yaw Baah, Former Secretary-General, TUC Dr. Yaw Baah, Former Secretary-General, TUC

A former Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr. Yaw Baah, has expressed deep concern over the wages of public sector workers, describing them as inadequate and unacceptable.

According to him, Ghana’s current minimum wage, which is just slightly above one dollar, is a disgrace.

He emphasized that the National Tripartite Committee must negotiate a better deal for public sector workers regarding the minimum wage.

Currently, Ghana’s minimum wage stands at GH¢18.15, a rate that has been strongly opposed by workers.

Dr. Baah further stated that this wage is woefully insufficient and an insult to workers who dedicate an entire day’s labor for such low compensation.

“This is not the Ghana we wanted to build. This is not the Ghana Kwame Nkrumah envisioned. After 68 years of independence, the people of Ghana are working eight hours for just one dollar. This is a big shame. I hold both the government and employers accountable for keeping the minimum wage so low,” Dr. Baah stated.

He urged employers to acknowledge the seriousness of the issue and take action during the ongoing wage negotiations.

“It is simply wrong, and I hope that in these negotiations, employers will realize the gravity of this issue,” he was quoted as saying by Citi Newsroom.

The National Tripartite Committee, which consists of representatives from the government, employers, and organised labor/associations, has commenced discussions to determine the 2025 minimum wage.

The committee began negotiations on February 3, 2025, marking an important step in setting wage standards for the upcoming financial year.

Hooliganism in GPL: Drinking spots should not be sited close to match venues

Akuapem North MP, Sammi Awuku Akuapem North MP, Sammi Awuku

The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku has urged sports minister, Kofi Adams to ensure that security protocols in Ghana football are reviewed to gurantee the safety of players, fans and officials.

Awuku raised concerns about the siting of drinking spots close to match venues, detailing how alcohol consumption before matches often leads to violence at stadiums.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Sammi Awuku entreated Kofi Adams to prioritize safety, especially the location of drinking spots around stadiums.

“One of the issues that concerns me is the location of drinking spots near our stadiums. Fans are not allowed to bring alcohol into the stadium, but many consume it heavily before entering. When tensions rise during a game, their judgment is impaired, leading to potential misconduct.

“We must be intentional about what businesses operate around our venues. I urge the sports minister to focus on security, officiating, and the regulation of drinking spots near stadiums,” he said.

Awuku made the comment during discussions about the tragic demise of Asante Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley.

Pooley was stabbed during Kotoko’s game against Nsoatreman on February 2, 2025.

The Ghana Police Service have arrested some individuals believed to be involved in the chaotic incident that led to the demise of the Asante Kotoko supporter.

Some of These Celebs Are Not Wise At All – Fans Drag Big Akwes After Claiming Men Should Sell Their Phones to Buy Valentine’s Gift for their Boo

0

Social media has descended on actor Big Akwes after he claimed that any man who fails to purchase a gift for their girlfriend on Valentine’s Day is a failure.

Big Akwes, while speaking on Max TV during a panel discussion, said that a man should be able to afford a beautiful gift to his boo on the beautiful red day of love.

0

Controversial Ghanaian social media commentator based in the United States of America (U.S.A), Twene Jonas, has revealed that he will be fine if he’s deported by the current Trump administration because he has made plans to continue to profit off his U.S. assets even if he’s not in the country.

According to Jonas, he has had a good life so far, especially since he moved to the U.S. hence even if he gets deported, it will not be the end of the world.

Social media has been abuzz with news over the potential immigration status of the ‘Glass Nkoaa’ content creator ever since President Donald Trump was inaugurated and a mass deportation exercise was kicked off.

Many Ghanaians whom Jonas had offended expressed hope that he would be deported and Jonas himself has revealed that he is scared of that outcome.

However, in a recent video, he said that he has made plans to continue to make money from the U.S.A. even if deported to Ghana. He claimed he would leave his properties in the hands of U.S. citizens who would rent them out and send him the proceeds. He also claimed that he would ship his many luxury cars including a Rolls Royce, Lamborghini, and others, to Ghana in case he’s deported.

Ghana is a crime scene due to reckless handling of the economy by NPP

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has described Ghana as a “crime scene” due to the reckless handling of the economy by the previous administration.

In a video shared by Citi FM, President Mahama, while speaking during a meeting with the Labour Union on February 20, 2025, expressed shock at the extent of economic mismanagement and called for collective sacrifice to stabilize the nation’s finances.

President Mahama acknowledged the challenges faced by workers but urged them to temper their demands for the sake of national recovery.

“We all knew the economy was in crisis, but some of the things I’m discovering myself… it’s been a criminal handling of our economy. Ghana is a crime scene because I cannot understand how a government could have been so reckless,” President Mahama stated.

He highlighted several austerity measures, including cuts to government expenditure, to address the economic crisis.

“Even we in the Office of Government Machinery are cutting our budget. We must all make sacrifices. When everyone else is tightening their belts, the political class cannot be loosening theirs,” he added.

President Mahama also proposed the establishment of an independent emoluments committee to set fair wages for all public sector workers, from the president to the ordinary laborer.

He assured the unions that once the economy stabilizes, workers would benefit from a larger “cake” through improved wages and conditions.

The government has already approved a 10% salary increase for public sector workers, effective March 1, 2025, as part of efforts to address economic challenges and rising living costs.

However, President Mahama stressed that this year must be one of correction and stabilization.

“Right now, the meal is not only insufficient, the cooking pot is even leaking. And so, I just appeal to you; let’s temper our demands for this year. Once we get out of the woods, let’s use this year as the year of correction. When the economy moves in the right direction, we can share bigger benefits. But for now, we must focus on fixing the leaking cooking pot,” he said.

The President’s remarks come amid ongoing efforts to revive Ghana’s economy, including measures to reduce inflation, stabilize the cedi, and implement structural reforms.

His administration has also pledged to tackle corruption and wasteful expenditure, aiming to restore public trust in governance.

Effutu Municipal Assembly to commence cholera vaccination on Feb 25

0

The Effutu Municipal Assembly in the Central Region has announced its readiness to begin administering cholera vaccines in the Effutu enclave starting February 25, 2025.

According to the Municipal Health Directorate, the vaccination campaign will commence in Effutu East and West areas that have been among the hardest hit by the outbreak.

The vaccine is aimed at strengthening individuals’ immunity against the disease and preventing further spread.

Speaking on February 20, Municipal Health Director Paulette Brown emphasized the importance of the initiative.

Her remarks followed the donation of 100 mattresses to healthcare facilities in Effutu by Member of Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

“The vaccines are already in the central region and it will start from February 25. For Effutu, most of the cases are in the Effutu West and East and we will start administering the vaccines from that side. I want to caution people against the myth surrounding the vaccines. They must know that it is only meant to build immunity and protect you for some time.

“We will also continue with health talks around the community to sensitize residents. There are no new cases and we are praying that when we start the vaccines, the spread will quickly halt,” Paulette Brown the Municipal Health Director said.

She expressed gratitude to Alexander Afenyo-Markin for his donation of mattresses to various health facilities in Effutu.

“The MP has donated over one hundred mattresses for onward distribution to the various health facilities in Effutu aimed at supporting us in the fight and we appreciate it,” she stated.

She acknowledged that staff mobility for contact tracing remains a significant challenge.

“We still have difficulty with mobility issues and health professionals struggle with movement around the community doing contact tracing. The MP and the Directorate have done their best and we want other stakeholders to support us by providing vehicles so that we will be able to cover as much as we can. At this moment contact tracing we have only one car and we are struggling,” the Municipal Director said.

Former Effutu Municipal Chief Executive, Kassim Zubeiru, who presented the mattresses on behalf of Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin, stated that the donation is timely and essential for saving lives.

“We understand that the facilities in Effutu are overwhelmed by the numbers and so the mattresses will help some of these challenges,” Kassim Zubeiru said.

‘Politics is the problem in this country, not the constitution’

0

A senior political science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Kwasi Amakye Boateng, has asserted that Ghana’s real challenge is political culture, rather than the constitution.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews, monitored by GhanaWeb on Thursday, February 20, 2025, he argued that constitutional reforms alone will not resolve the country’s governance issues, as the core problem lies in how political power is acquired and exercised.

Dr. Boateng emphasised that political appointments should be the only positions affected by a change in government, while public servants must remain untouched to ensure administrative continuity.

He maintained that the distinction between politics and administration has always existed in democratic systems and must be upheld to protect the integrity of governance.

“Constitutional amendment that people are talking about will not address the things of the country. It is our politics. It comes out of our own behaviour relative to power, the way we get power. There are so many people who do things based on their own understanding and not necessarily based on understanding that they are serving the public interest. You know, people use power to resolve several issues.

“It is a politics that is a problem. It’s not a constitution which is problematic,” he indicated.

His comments follow President John Dramani Mahama’s recent inauguration of an eight-member Constitutional Review Committee tasked with assessing and proposing amendments to the 1992 constitution.

The committee, composed of legal and governance experts, will focus on identifying key areas of the constitution that need updating to align with the country’s evolving democratic and socio-economic realities.

Their mandate includes reviewing past recommendations, engaging relevant stakeholders, and suggesting reforms to strengthen Ghana’s governance system.

Soliciting funds for veterans in pulic is embarrassing, reduces their relevance

0

Media personality and entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Ziega Media personality and entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Ziega

Media personality and entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Ziega, has shared his concerns about the growing public calls for financial help for veteran creatives facing hardships in Ghana.

Speaking on Neat FM, Ziega argued that the approach to seeking help for these veterans should be handled more discreetly to protect their reputation.

His comments come in the wake of an appeal for financial support for renowned actor Mawuli Semevor, who was involved in a fire accident and suffered serious burns.

A video shared by an NGO, ‘Beyond Burns International’, captured an appeal for financial support to help treat the actor’s injuries.

But speaking on that, Ziega said instead of announcing the actor’s plight on social media, organizers should have reached out privately to influential figures in the entertainment industry and beyond.

“When Mawuli Semevor’s accident happened, they should have appealed to his colleagues or even the president quietly, rather than making it public.

Men like Dr Kwame Despite, Ibrahim Mahama and others are able to help. Go to them in private and raise the money instead of going out with such news. I find it embarrassing,” Ziega stated.

Over the years, the media has been filled with appeals for help for various creatives in the movie and music industry, including KK Kabobo, Psalm Adjeteyfio, and Maame Gyanwaa, who suffered serious health problems.

Ziega pointed out that such public appeals can damage the legendary status of these creatives and tarnish their reputations.

“Announcing it on social media is embarrassing. People will start asking why is that this person has so many songs, has been in so many movies and has made money, yet he/she doesn’t have the means to handle his own problems.

“This approach lowers their legendary status. There has to be a better way to raise the needed funds without damaging their names,” he added.

Government to introduce National Standardized Test for BECE students

0

Haruna Iddrisu is the Minister of Education in Ghana Haruna Iddrisu is the Minister of Education in Ghana

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced the intentions of the government to introduce a National Standardized Test (NST) in basic schools.

The NST is a standardized assessment designed to measure students’ proficiency in core subjects such as Mathematics and English language.

It aims to serve as a platform for students in basic schools across the country to gauge their understanding of the curriculum and test their readiness for the BECE.

Speaking at a public forum on Monday, February 17, 2025, the education minister emphasized that the NST is intended to help students prepare for the BECE and other national tests.

The minister stressed that the tests will be administered to students in primaries 2, 4 and 6, as well as Junior High School (JHS) 2.

He believes that this assessment will foster a supportive atmosphere and provide valuable experience for students, helping to reduce stress when they take their BECE exams.

“I am also happy to announce that a National Standardized Test will be introduced in Ghana for students in P2, P4, P6, and JSS2. The intention is simple; we don’t want to tell a child that the only time they are asked to write exams is to prepare for the BECE and get ready for BECE when the child has never gone through even the psychological environment of an examination room. Therefore, we intend to introduce the NST, a national standardised which will help children prepare for the world of examinations,” he stated.
