Accra, Feb. 02, GNA – Dr Lawrence Tetteh, President/Founder Worldwide Outreach Ministry and an International Evangelist, has urged Members of Parliament (MPs) and politicians to live above reproach and have their lives reflect their title “honourable”.
He said the disruption of the vetting of Ministerial Nominees and the subsequent destruction of some equipment used for the vetting on Thursday, January 30, was very unfortunate.
“It is very sad that we allow Parliament to go through what is it going through now. But as much as we want to respect them, they must also create an atmosphere that will give room for people to honour them, because they are our leaders, and we want them to set good examples for us.” He said.
Dr Tetteh said this when he preached to climax of the Prayerfest2025 of the Maranatha Assembly of the Great Commission Church International (GCCI) in Tema.
The week-long prayer and fasting programme of the Church on the theme: “The God of Heaven, He will Prosper Us”, was to seek the blessings and favour of God for the new year.
Dr Tetteh called on the nation to pray for the Legislative body, for them to live above reproach.
“I want Ghanaians to pray for our Parliament, because this thing has happened before. In 2021 it happened, and it has happened again. It is not good. It doesn’t send a good signal at all about our Legislature,” he stated.
He encouraged MPs to rise above their emotions; saying “because emotions have no intellect”.
“And when they get emotionally inclined, it is not good. It doesn’t send a good right signal that even a Parliamentarian should go through some of the things that they are going through.”
He urged the MPs to remember that they were representing Ghanaians and not themselves.
Rev Iddi Yire, the Resident Pastor of Maranatha Assembly of the Great Commission Church International (GCCI), expressed gratitude to Dr Tetteh for his blessings and impartations to the Church.

Scene from the site of Akufo-Addo’s vandalised statue
Reconstruction work has commenced on the statue of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi, which was vandalised by unknown individuals on January 13, 2025.
A video from the site of the statue, reportedly shared by the sculptor and ceramist behind the controversial statue, showed the ongoing work at the site.
Two men could be seen digging a round trench at the base of the damaged statue.
The sculptor captioned the video, “Something new is cooking.”
About the vandalised statue
The statue of Akufo-Addo was completely destroyed after initially suffering some damage, which had been repaired earlier.
President Akufo-Addo faced significant criticism after unveiling the statue on November 6, 2024.
A section of the public, including President John Dramani Mahama, accused Akufo-Addo of self-glorification through the statue.
President Mahama stated that it should not be the president’s decision to erect a statue of himself; instead, the public should do so after his tenure in recognition of his achievements.
Some residents of Sekondi also expressed displeasure over the placement of the statue in their community, with some pointing out the poor condition of the very road where the statue was erected.

Eric Opoku is the Minister of Food and Agriculture
The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has announced that the government intends to revoke the contract for the construction of the Pwalugu Dam.
According to him, the government will seek new contractors and funding to ensure the project’s execution, rather than abandoning it entirely.
Speaking to journalists after a three-day tour of agencies under the ministry, Opoku stated that terminating the contract is in the nation’s best interest.
“We will terminate the contract immediately, seek a new contractor and funding, and ensure the project’s execution,” he said.
Opoku noted that the Attorney-General’s office will review the contract before termination to avoid judgment debt.
“Before we terminate, we will seek the Attorney General’s advice. We’re committed to executing the Pwalugu project, which will be President John Mahama’s signature project in the North,” he added.
The Pwalugu multipurpose dam project was initiated by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government in 2019 under a $993 million contract.
The project features a hydro-solar hybrid system with 60 MW of hydropower and 50 MW of solar power.
Despite $12 million spent on mobilization, the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA) revealed that actual construction has yet to commence.

Former Deputy Minister for Communications, Victoria Hamah
Former Deputy Minister for Communications, Victoria Hamah, believes that politics and religion are the two most unreliable domains for building trust.
Ms. Hamah shared her thoughts in a Facebook post on Saturday, January 1, 2025.
According to her, trust is difficult to establish in both political and religious spheres because they are often filled with manipulators.
“The two worst places to build trust are: 1. Politics and 2. Religion – these are places where you find the most skilful manipulators,” she wrote.
In an earlier post, she cautioned against blindly trusting people who present themselves as holy.
“Beware of those who come to you as holy people. Once they are clothed in the body, study their human nature,” she advised.
Ms. Hamah’s statement appeared to resonate with her followers, many of whom agreed with her in the comments section.
One commenter, Amelia Amemate, wrote, “Politics especially. Your reputation is often ruined before you even have a chance. Sometimes you hear things others have said about you people who don’t even know you and you just blink repeatedly.”
Another person added, “The two are not different. Religion is worse because the name of God is used to perpetrate evil.”
Ms. Hamah currently serves as the Executive Director of the Progressive Organisation for Women’s Advancement (POWA).

The Ghana Radio Astronomy Observatory at Nkutunse in the Greater Accra Region, a critical facility enabling global space research, is under threat from encroachers.
The illegal occupation of land surrounding the site is restricting the range at which the telescopes can capture and transmit images, limiting Ghana’s contribution to global space technology.
Originally covering 163 acres, the state-acquired land has now been reduced to only 30 acres, with indigenous groups threatening to invade the main facility. This has forced the government to deploy military personnel to protect workers constructing a GH¢1 million perimeter wall around the remaining land.
Despite documentary evidence from the Lands Commission confirming that compensation was paid to rightful landowners, some local youth remain defiant, insisting on reclaiming what they claim as their ancestral land.
The new security measures will see 20 acres of land enclosed with the newly built fence, complementing an earlier 10-acre defence wall funded by the American satellite communications company, Viasat, which operates a satellite facility within the compound.
Space Science Hub under threat
The Ghana Radio Astronomy Observatory, launched in 2017 by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is the only facility of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa outside of South Africa. It houses a 32-metre radio telescope, alongside 16-metre and 9-metre telescopes, and covers a 4-8 GHz frequency range.
The observatory plays a vital role in advancing Ghanaian expertise in electronics, ICT, and space science, while positioning the country as a major player in global astronomical research. Ghana was chosen for this project over Australia, thanks to its central location and proximity to the equator, making it an ideal site for space exploration research.
Experts raise alarm over disruptions
Speaking after a tour of the encroached area, Obrimpong Toku Dum VIII, Manager of the Real-Time Earth Station under the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), expressed grave concerns about the impact of the encroachment on scientific work.
“Due to the encroachment, the telescopes cannot see beyond 10 minutes,” he lamented.
He explained that buildings and household appliances such as blenders and microwaves were interfering with the observatory’s ability to “see” and transmit clear data to the rest of the world.
“The encroachment has been rampant over the last seven years because of the good roads leading to the site,” he noted.
“In the early days, there was little encroachment because the road was so bad. I remember one could spend an hour from the junction to the site. But now, it takes less than 15 minutes. I think the good road has been a curse rather than a blessing to the project,” he added.
His concerns were echoed by Dr. Joseph Tandoh, Director of the Ghana Space Science and Technology Institute, who warned that failing to act swiftly could cost Ghana millions in foreign investment.
“Ghana benefits financially for allowing itself to be used as a centre for world information and contributing to space technology,” Dr. Tandoh stated.
“But we risk losing out if we don’t protect the remaining land and invest in expanding knowledge in the field,” he cautioned.
He commended the government and GAEC for their efforts in preserving the facility through enhanced security measures but stressed the need for long-term solutions to safeguard Ghana’s space science ambitions.
According to GhanaWeb, Prof. Charles Marfo, the Provost for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reassess their choice of Alexander Afenyo-Markin as the Minority Leader in Parliament.
Prof. Marfo expressed that Afenyo-Markin contributes to the challenges faced by the NPP.
He criticized Afenyo-Markin for diminishing the reputation of Parliament, particularly referencing his remarks regarding protocol enlistments during the vetting of Defence Minister-designate Edward Omane Boamah.
In an interview with Oyerepa TV on January 30, 2025, Prof. Marfo stated that Afenyo-Markin’s comments suggest a casual attitude towards serious parliamentary processes, further asserting that such behavior undermines the integrity of the legislative body.
He emphasized that the NPP needs to reconsider its leadership choices, pointing out that there are more capable individuals within the party.
“Seriously, I think he is the problem. NPP, seriously, as a party, needs to reconsider its leadership at some point because there are other great people in the house. The Bible said that when you talk too much, you end up speaking trash,” he stated.
Afenyo-Markin, who serves as the Ranking Member of the Appointments Committee, lightheartedly suggested to Dr. Edward Omane Boamah during the vetting on January 28, 2025, that he should not be denied protocol enlistment if approved by Parliament, despite the rigorous questioning he was subjecting him to.
He recounted past instances of protocol benefits, indicating that members of the Defence Committee, including those from the opposition, had received such allocations.
His comments included a reminder that his scrutiny during the vetting process should not influence the distribution of protocol benefits, reinforcing the idea that these allocations should be fairly administered regardless of the questioning dynamics in Parliament.
Feb 2 (CP/GNA) – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada will hit back with steep, immediate retaliatory tariffs on American goods after U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed he is moving ahead with devastating duties on Canada starting Tuesday.
Trump signed an executive order on Saturday to slap Canada with 25 per cent tariffs — with a lower 10 per cent duty for energy — laying the foundation for an unprecedented trade war with America’s closest neighbours.
Trudeau held a news conference Saturday evening to announce that Canada will respond with an immediate $30-billion retaliation package, which will be followed by $125 billion in duties on American products in 21 days to give companies and supply chains time to find alternatives.
Canada’s retaliation plan will include everyday items such as American beer, wine, bourbon, fruits and fruit juices, including orange juice, along with vegetables, perfume, clothing and shoes, Trudeau said.
Trudeau connected with Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum and held meetings with cabinet and premiers earlier Saturday.
Trump signed the executive order Saturday at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida after spending much of the day at a golf course. It included a retaliation clause that says if Canada responds with duties on American products, the levies could be increased.
In a social media post, Trump said he implemented tariffs against Canada, Mexico and China to stop what he calls the illegal flow of fentanyl and people across America’s border.
“We need to protect Americans, and it is my duty as president to ensure the safety of all,” he said.
The volume of drugs and people crossing from Canada into the United States is miniscule compared to Mexico. U.S Customs and Border Protection statistics show less than one per cent of all fentanyl seized comes from the northern border.
In his news conference, Trudeau said he has not been able to personally contact the president about the tariffs.
Addressing the American public at the news conference, Trudeau said the tariffs against Canada will “put your jobs at risk” by potentially shutting down the American auto and manufacturing sectors.
“They will raise costs for you, including at the grocery stores and at the gas pump,” Trudeau said.
Ghanaian media personality, Nathan Kwabena Adisi, Bola Ray
In the debut episode of Spotlight Spin with host Etornam Kumashie, renowned Ghanaian broadcaster and entrepreneur Nathan Kwabena Adisi, popularly known as Bola Ray, shared the fascinating story behind his name and reflected on his early years.
Bola Ray, a household name in Ghana’s media landscape, revealed that the nickname originated during his time at Accra Academy when he was just 11 years old. Initially, he was known by different variations, including “Nathie Ray” and “Nathie Bongo,” influenced by his senior schoolmates. However, his quest for a unique identity led him to adopt “Bola Ray” after a chance encounter with a pencil.
“I came across a pencil one day when I was going for prep in the evening, and I stumbled upon it on the floor. It had the word ‘Bola’ written on it,” he recalled. Inspired by the name, he combined it with “Ray,” which had already been part of his previous nicknames, and the now-iconic moniker was born.
Beyond just a nickname, Bola Ray infused meaning into each letter of the name, explaining that “B” stands for bold, “O” for outstanding, “L” for loving, and “A” for affable. “Ray,” he added, represents being religious, ambitious, and youthful—qualities he has carried throughout his career.
During the interview, he also reminisced about his childhood in Obuasi, where he was raised in a disciplined yet vibrant household. His father, a computer programmer at Ashanti Goldfields Corporation, and his mother, a fashion designer, provided a solid foundation for his future. He vividly recalled a defining moment in 1986 when his family relocated to Accra, marking his first journey outside Obuasi.
Bola Ray’s revelations offered a rare glimpse into the experiences that shaped his personality and career. From a young boy with a pencil-inspired nickname to a celebrated media personality, his story is one of self-definition and continuous evolution.
Attorney-General (AG) and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine
The Attorney-General (AG) and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has revealed the role women involved in extramarital affairs commonly referred to as “side chicks” played in preventing Ghana from enacting laws on spouses’ rights to their deceased partners’ properties.
Dr. Ayine, while highlighting some flaws in Ghana’s Constitution, expressed deep concern over the country’s failure to pass legislation on spousal property rights, describing it as one of his biggest regrets.
He explained that the only attempt to pass such a law occurred during the first term of former President John Dramani Mahama.
However, the bill was rejected at the consideration stage in Parliament.
“The Constitution guarantees the property rights of spouses in Article 22, Clause 1, which states: ‘Parliament shall, as soon as practicable after the coming into force of this Constitution, enact legislation regulating the property rights of spouses.’ It has been 32 years since the Constitution came into force, yet we are yet to pass such legislation.”
“The closest we came to fulfilling this obligation was during Mr. President’s first term when my boss, the Hon. Marietta Brew, tabled a motion in Parliament in 2016 to regulate spousal property rights. However, the bill was rejected due to a single provision relating to cohabitation,” he said.
Dr. Ayine disclosed that at the time, the 20 female parliamentarians in the House strongly opposed the bill and did everything in their power to prevent its passage.
He stated that the female MPs feared the law would allow “side chicks” to inherit the properties of married men.
The bill proposed that individuals who had cohabited for five years would be entitled to inherit their partner’s properties. However, this provision was met with fierce resistance from the female MPs.
“The women’s caucus in Parliament at the time strongly opposed that provision, and their opposition was louder than all the men combined. There were only 20 women, yet during consultations, when I even suggested removing the cohabitation clause which provided that if a man and a woman, regardless of marital status, lived together for five years and presented themselves as husband and wife, they would be entitled to inherit shared property; the women still shut it down.”
“They viewed this as an advantage for ‘side chicks,’ and despite their small numbers, they ensured the bill did not pass,” he said.

Individuals must take these factors seriously to avoid facing severe consequences
The Bank of Ghana’s advisory on financial literacy has outlined six essential factors to consider before guaranteeing a loan for someone else.
These factors range from understanding the terms involved to realizing the legal ramifications, seeking expert advice, and other crucial considerations.
Individuals must take these factors seriously to avoid facing severe consequences if the loan conditions are breached.
Here are the six factors to consider before acting as a guarantor in a loan deal:
1. Understand the role of a guarantor
A guarantor is responsible for repaying the loan if the borrower defaults on payment. This means the guarantor will settle the debt, including interest, when necessary.
2. Recognize your legal and financial responsibility
Acting as a guarantor means the loan agreement will be documented and recognized by the legal system. Failure to fulfill the obligation will have serious consequences. Therefore, one should be cautious about their financial worth, as it could be jeopardized by serving as a guarantor.
3. Evaluate the borrower’s ability to pay
It is crucial to ensure the borrower is capable of repaying the loan, considering their financial state. The guarantor should verify that the borrower has a stable income and a contingency plan for loan repayment to avoid future controversies.
4. Review the loan agreement carefully
Before signing a loan agreement, one must have an in-depth understanding of the terms and conditions.
Signing documents without full knowledge of the conditions and implications could endanger one’s finances or reputation if things go wrong.
5. Do not rely solely on trust or relationships
Personal relationships should not be the reason for guaranteeing a loan. Instead, consider the person’s financial ability to make repayment.
Conduct due diligence on the borrower’s repayment track record to make an informed decision, as defaulting on the loan will place a financial burden on the guarantor.
6. Seek independent advice if in doubt
If unsure about financial terms and conditions, consult an expert for advice before signing loan documents as a guarantor. Private financial advisors can help clarify doubts and prevent complications in the future.
Ghanaian barber Kelvin Akomeah Boafo, popularly known as “Legacy The Barber,” has revealed that he once gave a haircut to Portuguese football icon Cristiano Ronaldo but was unable to capture the moment on video.
Unlike his haircut sessions with Ronaldo’s son, where he is allowed to record, Legacy explained that the Al Nassr superstar declined to make a video due to privacy concerns.
In response, Legacy shared his biggest wish with Ronaldo to become the football legend’s personal barber.
“I have shaved Ronaldo before, but because of privacy, I couldn’t make a video. So I told him, ‘Okay, the only thing I need is to be part of the family as your personal barber,'” he told Zion Felix TV on YouTube.
“If I have been accepted by the kid and I’m getting closer to the father, I’m okay.”
The Ghanaian barber has since become the preferred hairstylist for Cristiano Jr., often giving him trims that make him stand out among his peers.
Being the barber of the son of a global football icon has brought Legacy The Barber numerous benefits, including access to Ronaldo’s Dubai mansion and a massive social media following.
In several videos shared on his social media accounts, Cristiano Jr. is seen endorsing Legacy The Barber.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has reiterated the importance of following parliamentary procedures in addressing disciplinary matters within the House.
His comments come in response to Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to suspend some MPs from parliamentary sittings for two weeks.
The suspended MPs include the two chief Whips for both the Minority and Majority caucuses, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor and Frank Annoh-Dompreh, as well as Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib on January 31.
Meanwhile, the Speaker has also set up a Committee to probe the incident.
The suspension comes after an incident that the Speaker described as an embarrassment to the institution of Parliament.
Speaker Bagbin has directed the Parliamentary Marshal to prevent the suspended MPs from entering the chamber for the period.
The decision was made in light of the disorder that occurred during the vetting of ministerial nominees, which disrupted the smooth conduct of the committee’s work. Tables and microphones were broken in the process, with some MPs nearly engaging blows.
While acknowledging the Speaker’s justified frustration over the incidents, Oppong Nkrumah emphasized that due process must be observed. “While Mr Speaker is justified in his righteous anger, the processes in accordance with the standing orders should be followed,” he stated.
“We will be taking steps to bring it to the Speaker’s attention and we will be drawing his attention to the various orders that provide for how these matters should be handled,: he said in an interview on Accra-based Channel One TV.
“He further indicated that steps would be taken to engage the Speaker on the matter, ensuring adherence to established parliamentary procedures.”
“We are hopeful that the Speaker when his attention is drawn to these orders, will ensure that the right thing is done,” he added.
Meanwhile, Parliament’s Appointments Committee is set to recommend the approval of Foreign Affairs Minister-designate Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Health Minister-designate Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and ten other nominees who were vetted on Friday, January 31.

According to Vanguard, Princess Ntuk, a Nigerian female DJ known professionally as DJ Pretty Play, is stunning, with captivating curves, including a prominent behind that many would pay millions for.
However, in a recent Instagram video, she expressed her frustration, tearfully explaining that her physical appearance is hindering her career.
She lamented that while many view her curves as a blessing, it overshadows her actual talent, with people focusing more on her appearance than her work as a DJ.
In the emotional video, she pleaded for attention to be directed toward her skills rather than her body, saying, “Please, I’m a professional DJ and great at what I do, but what everyone seems to care about is my ass. Every day, the focus is on my body, not my music. Even when I’m just being myself and not showcasing my curves, all anyone talks about is my behind. Why? I’m exhausted. Am I not a good DJ? I’m a professional, and the attention should be on my craft.”
“Even the wedding I performed yesterday the topic on social media was about my ass and not my performance. Why? Because when the focus is on my body, it trends massively, and people share it over and over, but when it’s about my mixes and my work, it doesn’t get the same attention.
“What you all need to understand is that I’m married. I’m someone’s wife. It’s not right to be talking about a married woman’s body like that. Why are you sharing and trending another man’s wife’s behind?” she said, sobbing and kneeling down to plead.

The private residence of the former Director of Operations at the Presidency, Lord Commey has been stormed by armed military according to reports.
The information gathered suggests the armed military men were dressed in mufti in a vehicle with registration number GW 4876-24.
Reports suggest the military men stormed his residence to tow away six cars alleged to belong to the Ghana government.
On January 31, 2025, at around 10 pm, the military men stormed the leading member of the opposition NPP private residence.
The armed military men insisted on towing away the cars despite the intervention of the Ghana Police Service.
According to the information gathered Lord Commy was not around when the military men stormed his residence, upon arriving home he gave out the keys to the cars they were after.
FROM the battle cries of freedom fighters to the beats that stir the soul, art and politics have always had a close, sometimes combustible, relationship.
Whether it’s through songs, paintings, poetry, or performances, the artist has long been the voice of resistance, a beacon of hope, and an amplifier of the people’s will.
In Ghana, as in much of the world, art has both fought and fueled political causes, and its influence continues to reverberate through the corridors of power. But as with any powerful tool, there’s a fine line between art serving the people and art serving political agendas.
Art as a Weapon for Change
Historically, artists have been at the forefront of political movements, using their work to question the status quo, provoke thought, and mobilize masses. Who can forget the revolutionary music of the 1980s, when Ghana’s musicians used their lyrics to challenge political oppression and demand change? In those turbulent times, songs weren’t just melodies; they were anthems for protest, a soundtrack to a generation’s fight for democracy.
In Ghana and across the globe, music has been a significant voice for the marginalised, the oppressed, and the disillusioned. Whether it’s Bob Marley’s Reggae rhythms pushing for social justice, or Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat challenging Nigeria’s military dictatorship, art has always had the power to push against authority. It’s not merely entertainment; it’s a call to action.
In Ghana, musicians like Sarkodie, A-Plus, Stonebwoy and Blakk Rasta have used their platforms to express the people’s frustrations. Music became a tool for political mobilisation and societal change, connecting generations through shared struggles. These artistes knew that with every note, every lyric, they could spark a movement.
Politicians Using Art to Mobilise
But it’s not just the artistes who have seen the power in art. Politicians, too, have long understood its potential as a strategic tool. Whether it’s through campaign jingles, concert rallies, or endorsements from celebrities, political campaigns have harnessed art to amplify their messages and win hearts and votes.
From the days of President Kwame Nkrumah’s Pan-African rhetoric to the NDC’s recent efforts in enlisting popular musicians for their campaigns, the union of politics and art is as old as the republic itself.
Think about the energy of those campaign concerts—sometimes more like a cross between a rally and a nightclub—where the air is thick with political slogans and the beat drops just as the party’s manifesto is being drummed into the minds of the youth.
It’s no accident that music, which already holds sway over public sentiment, is used to consolidate political power. In the 2024 elections, we saw top-tier artistes such as Samini and Nacee getting involved, not just for the love of music, but to ensure their political allegiance was as loud and clear as their hits. It’s a formula that’s worked well for parties in the past, using the reach of popular music to transcend the barriers of traditional political discourse.
The Influence of Art on Politics (and Vice Versa)
Art’s relationship with politics is symbiotic. Art influences politics by shaping public opinion, reflecting societal mood, and offering new ways to view the world. Politicians, in turn, use art to control and communicate. The more vibrant and impactful the art, the more it shapes the political environment.
In Ghana, the election season saw street murals, billboards with catchy slogans, and musical performances that were as much about political messaging as they were about entertainment. Politicians increasingly understand that they must tap into the creative economy to connect with voters—particularly the younger, more digitally-savvy generations who consume music and content at an unprecedented rate.
However, this fusion of art and politics comes with a heavy dose of responsibility. While it is powerful for musicians and artists to use their craft for the betterment of society, it is equally important that they do not allow themselves to be manipulated into pushing narrow political agendas that benefit a select few, rather than the collective good.
Walking the Fine Line
This brings us to the critical point: the need for a fine line between art and politics. Art, by its nature, should remain a tool for self-expression, for challenging norms, and for creating awareness. When it becomes too closely tied to the fortunes of a political party or an individual, it risks losing its integrity.
Consider Ghana’s history—remember the ban on nightlife and large concerts during the 1981 coup? The military government, concerned about the potential for mass mobilisation, cracked down on entertainment, seeing it as a threat to their control. It’s a reminder of the dangers of blending entertainment and politics too intimately. Politicians may use art to energize their base, but once it crosses into coercion or censorship, it loses its power to serve the people.
Artists must remain vigilant, ensuring that their creativity serves society, not narrow political interests. They should continue to be vocal, using their craft as tools for social commentary and change—but always for the benefit of the people, and not to push selfish or divisive agendas.
The Power to Empower, Not Exploit
In the end, music, art, and entertainment are not just political weapons—they are instruments of empowerment. They can rally the masses, shift cultural narratives, and inspire change. But they also carry immense responsibility. Artistes must be aware of the line between using their platform for societal good and being co-opted into a political machine.
As the Ghanaian political landscape continues to evolve, we must remember that art’s true power lies in its ability to unite us, not divide us. The fine line between art and politics should not be a line of compromise, but a line of clarity—one that ensures creativity remains free, honest, and, most importantly, beneficial to all.
So, let the artists be the voices of the people, but let them also be the guardians of their own art, staying true to their craft and to the wider good.
The shipping and logistics industry is the lifeblood of global trade—an intricate network that ensures the seamless flow of goods across continents, connecting businesses, nations, and economies.
In Ghana, this sector is not merely a cog in the wheel; it is a driving force, an engine that powers the nation’s economy and secures its position on the global stage.
As vital as it is, however, the industry requires more than just functionality; it demands transformative leadership—leaders who possess the vision, energy, passion and strategic acumen to navigate the complex tides of commerce and policy.
When Kwesi Baffour Sarpong was appointed by His Excellency, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in November 2023 to lead the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA), few could have predicted the scale of impact he would make. From the very first day of his tenure, Sarpong injected the GSA with an electrifying energy—driven by a bold vision for Ghana’s shipping industry, and manifested through a clear strategy for reform, and an unyielding belief in excellence.
His approach was not just about doing things differently; it was about doing things better—creating a legacy that would withstand operational challenges and the test of time; and elevate the standing of Ghana on the scene of global trade.
Sarpong’s drive quickly became apparent as he set in motion a series of high-impact reforms and infrastructural developments. The Ghana Shippers’ Authority Act 2024 (Act 1122), a cornerstone achievement, stands as a testament to his visionary thinking.
This groundbreaking legislation, which amended the 50-year-old Establishment Law (NRCD 254) of the GSA, redefines the regulatory landscape of Ghana’s shipping sector. Its passage was propelled by tremendous support from both Parliament and the Ministry of Transport, whose collaboration ensured the Act’s swift enactment.
The new law establishes clear frameworks to govern commercial shipping activities, eliminate unfair practices at ports and borders, and create a competitive environment that benefits all stakeholders.
By enhancing the regulatory mandate over transit shipping, the amended law ensures greater efficiency across the logistics chain, providing a more transparent, efficient, and competitive platform for trade.
Sarpong’s vision, however, extended far beyond legal reforms. Under his leadership, infrastructure was revolutionized. The Boankra Integrated Logistics Terminal (BILT), one of the most ambitious projects in the country’s logistics history, was brought to life with Phase 1 nearing completion ‘, and estimated to be completed by the end of the first quarter of the year.
This vital terminal promises to reshape the logistics landscape of the northern half of the country, improving road networks, storage facilities, and security zones to bolster the country’s trade capacity, especially with its landlocked neighbors, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. With full operations projected by 2026, BILT will be a game-changer for the region and for Ghana’s overall trade efficiency.
Simultaneously, Sarpong championed the perfection of land documentation to pave the way for the commencement of works for the Akatakyiwa Freight Park Project, strategically located at Yamoransa junction in the Central region, along the Accra-Takoradi highway.
This ambitious project is designed to cater to both transit cargo destined for landlocked countries and cargo flowing between Ghana’s southern and western regions. With truck parks, driver accommodations, restaurants, and workshops, it will serve as a vital hub for logistics services, enhancing Ghana’s standing as a trade facilitator in the region.
Sarpong’s leadership was not just about bold infrastructural projects or legislative triumphs—it was also about institutional growth and adapting to global industry trends. By the time the GSA marked its 50th anniversary, he spearheaded a major revisioning and repositioning initiative that realigned its mandate, vision, and mission with global standards of modern commercial shipping.
By streamlining the internal operations of GSA, and fostering greater collaboration with stakeholders of the sector, Sarpong laid a solid foundation for the GSA to adapt to the evolving dynamics of global trade.
His commitment to building a culture of effective modern corporate governance, efficiency and service excellence has transformed the GSA into a model institution—one that serves as a beacon of professionalism in the industry.
Deservingly, His leadership has not gone unnoticed. Under his stewardship, the GSA earned the prestigious titles of Public Sector Company of the Year 2024 and Trade Facilitation Company of the Year 2024 at the Ghana Business Awards.
These accolades are a reflection of the Authority’s extraordinary contributions to the shipping and logistics sector, and they stand as a testament to Sarpong’s relentless pursuit of excellence.
As Kwesi Baffour Sarpong moves on to pursue other interests, he leaves behind an institution that has been fundamentally reshaped and elevated to global standards of excellence.
His successor, Prof. Ransford Gyampo, inherits not just an organization, but a legacy of transformation—one driven by vision, exposure, efficiency, and unwavering transparency. Under Sarpong’s leadership, the Ghana Shippers’ Authority has evolved into a resilient, future-focused institution, primed to navigate the ever-changing dynamics of global trade and logistics.
His tenure is a testament to his deep belief in service, embodied in his favorite maxim: Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori—”It is a very admirable thing to die for one’s country.”
Award-winning gospel artiste Diana Hamilton has reaffirmed her commitment to delivering an unchanging message of faith while allowing her sound to evolve with time.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Starr Chart with host Bola Ray, the celebrated musician shared insights into how she balances creativity with staying true to her spiritual mission.
“Every time I work with a new producer, my sound evolves, but my message stays the same,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of keeping her music fresh while ensuring its core message remains unadulterated.
When asked how she ensures her music resonates with listeners without compromising her faith, Diana Hamilton explained that her process is deeply rooted in prayer and collaboration.
“One of the things I ask God is, ‘Father, grant me utterance to be able to put it out there in a way that you want me to do it, but also in a way that people can relate to.’ That way, my songs meet people at different stages in life and help them through.”
She credited the success of her music not only to divine inspiration but also to the team she surrounds herself with, highlighting the role of producers, managers, and media platforms in amplifying her message.
“When I work with a new producer, I tell him, ‘You have a responsibility.’ Because while my message doesn’t change, my sound does. So, when I move producers, we’re changing gears,” she explained.
The student captured beating his juniors with a cutlass
The management of Accra Academy School says it has launched a joint investigation with the police into a disturbing incident that has sparked widespread outrage.
A viral video circulating on social media appears to show a senior student flogging a junior with a cutlass.
The footage generated intense backlash, with many users calling for the perpetrator’s arrest.
Following the incident, the school’s management issued a statement assuring parents and guardians that the matter is being thoroughly investigated.
The management has urged them to remain calm, stating that appropriate action will be taken once the investigation is complete.
“It is understandable that this incident has caused alarm and worry among our parents and guardians, and we want to assure you that we take this matter very seriously,” the statement read.
The school further clarified that the incident occurred on January 17, 2025, but only came to light recently when the video surfaced on social media, prompting the victim to report it to the authorities.
The school also stated that it has identified all students involved and contacted their parents, with some parents already providing statements.
The student responsible for the incident has been handed over to the police for further questioning, according to the statement from the school.
“The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. We understand the concern this video has caused, and we are committed to investigating this matter thoroughly,” the school said in its statement.
“The students involved in the incident are day students and have been asked to stay away from the school while the investigation is ongoing. The weapon used was reportedly the flat side of a machete that was brought from the perpetrators’ homes and not from the school’s premises.”

Franklin Cudjoe, Founding President of IMANI Africa, has come to the defense of Ghana’s recent ministerial vetting process, asserting that nearly all relevant questions were asked during the sessions.
Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points on Saturday, February 1, Cudjoe praised the depth and relevance of the inquiries, particularly commending Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for his insightful and well-structured questioning.
“I enjoyed Afenyo’s questions,” Cudjoe remarked, highlighting how the MP focused on critical governance and policy issues. He dismissed claims that the vetting process lacked substance, emphasizing that the core concerns of Ghanaians were adequately addressed. “I disagree with those who say the ministerial vetting did not capture essential areas of interest. Almost all the relevant questions were asked,” he stated.
However, Cudjoe did not shy away from criticizing the conduct of some Members of Parliament during the vetting sessions. He expressed concern that certain MPs used the platform for personal grandstanding rather than addressing national priorities. “You, members of Parliament, are representing us. All of us cannot go asking the nominees questions. So, you are supposed to get into our heads, get a sense of what is urgent, of importance to the people of Ghana, not just to yourself and to your ego per se, and to your little personal fights and grandstanding,” he said.
Cudjoe also lamented the misuse of national airtime, arguing that some of the personal and politically charged questions should have been handled privately rather than in a public forum. “Sometimes you look at them and you listen to their questioning, and I’m like, why don’t you do this in your private room? Why don’t you do this off the camera? Because we really don’t need the kind of diatribe,” he added.
The IMANI Africa president further pointed to lapses in the management of the vetting process, particularly by the committee chairman. He argued that the chairman should have intervened to maintain order when the sessions devolved into chaos. “If you are chairing a very important and sensitive program or activity of this nature and it ends up in such chaos, I think it’s a very big problem,” he remarked.
Cudjoe suggested that the chairman could have taken proactive steps to restore order, such as calling for a break when discussions became unproductive. “The committee chairman could have said, ‘Listen, the way things are going, I think we need a break. Can we take a break? Suspend certain discussions,’” he proposed.
The ministerial vetting process is a cornerstone of Ghana’s governance framework, ensuring that nominees for key government positions are thoroughly scrutinized for competence and suitability. While Cudjoe’s defense of the process underscores its importance, his criticisms highlight areas for improvement, particularly in maintaining focus and decorum during these high-stakes sessions.
Cudjoe’s remarks serve as a call to action for MPs to prioritize national interests over personal agendas and for committee leaders to exercise greater control over proceedings. As Ghana continues to strengthen its democratic institutions, the vetting process remains a critical tool for ensuring accountability and transparency in government.

Agortime (V/R), Feb. 2, GNA – The people of Agortime-Ziope in the Volta Region have expressed excitement over the shortlisting of Ms. Sename Vicentia Leyo by the MMDCEs vetting committee for the position of District Chief Executive (DCE).
According to residents, Ms. Leyo is the ideal candidate to lead the district, as they believe she possesses the vision and leadership skills needed to drive development and align with the President’s agenda for progress.
In an interaction with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), community members, including chiefs, youth, and women, voiced their eagerness to see Ms. Leyo assume the role and steer the district’s affairs.
Mr. Castro Atsu Narh, a resident of Akpokorfe, described Ms. Leyo as a highly respected and experienced leader who has the capacity to elevate the district’s development.
“She is someone who cares for everyone, from the youth to the elderly. She is results-oriented and will do everything within her power to develop the district,” he stated.
Similarly, Mr. Emmanuel Kofitse, a native of Ziope, highlighted the importance of collaboration between the Member of Parliament (MP) and the DCE.
“With the MP being a man, he can work effectively with a woman DCE to achieve greater development for the district. Even though we did not see much improvement under the previous female DCE, that was due to differences in political vision. With Ms. Leyo, both leaders will be on the same page, and she will also have the President’s support, ensuring more benefits for the district,” he explained.
He further suggested that under Ms. Leyo’s leadership, Agortime-Ziope could benefit from initiatives such as the establishment of a branch of the Women’s Development Bank to support market women.
A chief from Kpetoe, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also expressed confidence that Ms. Leyo’s appointment could help resolve the district’s long-standing water crisis.
Many women in the community echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that Ms. Leyo, as a woman, would be more responsive to their needs.
They believe she would prioritize infrastructure improvements at the Kpetoe and Ziope markets and address challenges faced by women traders.
They, therefore, appealed to the President to consider appointing Ms. Leyo as the DCE to accelerate the district’s development.
Meanwhile, Ms. Sename Vicentia Leyo has outlined her top priorities should she be appointed.
These include improving water and sanitation, enhancing infrastructure—especially in the district’s two major markets—empowering women and youth, and boosting economic activities to increase local revenue generation.
Ms. Leyo has been shortlisted among the final three candidates, who will appear before a seven-member committee in Accra for the final selection and appointment by the President.

Regarding stalled projects, particularly markets, Dr. Amoakohene committed to reviewing the causes of the delays.
“I will conduct a comprehensive review of all stalled projects to determine whether the issue is a lack of funding or political will. From there, I will make informed decisions on how to proceed,” he assured.
When asked about the Kumasi Kejetia Market Phase 2 project, he confirmed that work would resume, though he did not provide specific timelines.
Dr. Amoakohene also addressed the implementation of a 24-hour economy in the region, which he sees as essential for sustaining economic growth.

Mining, another critical sector for the region, will also be a focus.

Accra, Feb. 2, GNA – More than 150 international businesses with a diverse array of innovations and projects are expected to converge in Accra in July for the Ghana Investment Trade Week, providing opportunities for networking and forging potential collaborations with local companies.
This event, being organised by MIE GROUP and the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry, will bring together businesses from key markets from Asia, the Middle East and Europe to explore Foreign Direct Investment opportunities in Ghana.
It is being held on the theme: “Fostering Partnerships for Sustainable Growth: Bridging Trade and Real Estate Investments Across Continents.”
Speaking at the launch Ghana Investment Trade Week and America Property Exhibition 2025, Mr Emmanuel Tetteh Martey, Chairman Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry, said trade and real estate investments were vital ingredients for economic growth and by bridging opportunities within Ghana, Africa, and the Americas, would create a dynamic platform for mutual prosperity.
“Today marks the beginning of an ambitious journey to drive innovation, collaboration and boundless opportunities united by a shared vision to advance sustainable infrastructure development across Ghana and the broader African continent,” he said.
Mr Martey said Ghana with its stable economic climate, fledgling democracy, anchored on rule of law, strategic location and its commitment to business friendly policies continued to be the gateway as well as the preferred destination for investments in Africa.
He said the real estate and infrastructure sectors of the economy in particular presented immense opportunities for real growth, innovation and sustainable development.
“To this end, by forging strategic partnerships between local and international investors, developers and policy makers, we can unlock and unleash new avenues for wealth creation, job opportunities, urban transformation aligned with Ghana’s national development agenda and a global push for climate resilient and technological infrastructure,” Mr Martey said.
He said the Ghana Trade Week initiative was not just an exhibition but a movement towards deepening relations, trade relations, facilitating knowledge exchange and strengthening the investment ecosystem.
“It is a call to action for governments, businesses and stakeholders to work together in creating resilient forward thinking solutions that will define the future of our economies,” he said.
“As we embark on this exciting journey, let us seize the opportunity before us and open our minds and unwavering commitment. Let us build bridges, cultivate lasting relationships and pave the way for a future of sustainable growth and shared success,” he added.
Mr Frank Lartey, Group Chairman Core Construction Group of Companies, who officially launched the week, said investment was critical for the growth of the real estate sector.
He said the real estate sector needed a lot of investments to meet the demands of the different segments of society, adding that the payback for such investments are good.
Mr Emmanuel Cherry, Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry, said the Trade Week would provide an interface for industry players to market their activities under a common platform.
“We need to interface to make sure that what we do here is being done elsewhere or what we can also take outside. We always depend on imports but we also need to export,” he added.
Meanwhile, America Property Exhibition, which will take place in Miami, has been launched. It will bring together real estate professionals, investors and developers from around the world.
Morocco’s unwavering commitment to peace and reconciliation in Africa was reaffirmed Friday before the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC), as the Kingdom emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach linking security, development, and stability.
Speaking at an AU PSC meeting marking African Day of Peace and Reconciliation, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the AU and UNECA, Mohamed Arrouchi, underscored the Kingdom’s consistent engagement in fostering stability across the continent, in line with the High Directives of HM King Mohammed VI.
Africa’s security challenges—rising political violence, terrorism, and extremism, compounded by economic and social crises—continue to hinder development efforts, Arrouchi warned.
These instabilities have severe repercussions, affecting millions and impeding progress toward peace, security, and good governance.
Given the limitations of a purely military approach, Morocco advocates a multidimensional strategy, recognizing the critical link between peace, security, and economic development as the foundation for lasting stability.
Morocco actively supports African-led peace initiatives, mediation efforts, capacity building, and regional cooperation, Arrouchi noted, underlining that the Kingdom prioritizes mediation and dialogue as conflict-resolution tools, strategic partnerships to enhance African peace efforts and socio-economic development as a means to reinforce stability.
By fostering reconciliation, economic empowerment, and regional cooperation, Morocco remains committed to building a peaceful, prosperous, and resilient Africa, he concluded.
The Minister of Energy and Green Transition John Jinapor says inadequate power supply remains a major hurdle to Africa’s Energy for All agenda.
He noted that while the continent needs $43–$55 billion in annual energy investments until 2040, only about $9 billion is currently mobilised, leaving a significant funding gap for universal electricity access and sustainability.
Speaking on Day 2 of the 2025 Africa Prosperity Dialogues, Energy Minister John Jinapor called on African leaders to embrace innovative energy solutions and strengthen collaborations with the private sector to guarantee a stable and sustainable power supply.
“If Africa were to collaborate and develop the Inga dam, it could potentially provide the cheapest source of power which is needed for industrialisation. And 100 megawatts of energy is quite the age when it comes to Africa. Our dialogues here must focus on actionable solutions rather than the traditionally well‑documented approach of talking about the already‑grown challenges,” he said.
John Jinapor also assured that the Ghana government will ensure a stable and continuous power supply to drive its proposed 24-hour economy policy.
According to the Minister, the initiative is a key priority in the government’s broader economic reset agenda, aimed at stimulating growth and enhancing productivity across sectors.
“We are also committed to investing in energy to make a life stay on as a foundation pillar to power our policy of a 24‑hour economy, which we are committed to achieving,”he assured.
He further disclosed that the government is committed to positioning Ghana as a leader in Africa’s energy transition while ensuring sustainability and long-term energy security.
“Ghana is committed to leading Africa’s energy transition while advancing sustainable development,” he indicated.
He added that:’Under the leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, we are committed to embarking on the progressive path towards ensuring that we achieve renewable and sustainable energy, not just for Ghana, but for Ghana to serve as a reliable hub for the entire West African subregion.’
Ghanaians who purchased the Ghana Gold Coin (GGC) at its launch on November 25, 2024, have seen a slight increase in the value of their investment as gold prices continue to fluctuate.
A price comparison between November 25, 2024, and January 31, 2025, shows a marginal appreciation in the cedi value of the coin, influenced by shifts in global gold prices and exchange rates.

Price changes over two months
On November 25, 2024, the Ghana Gold Coin was priced as follows:
– 1-ounce coin: GH₵44,403.68
– Half-ounce coin: GH₵22,607.09
– Quarter-ounce coin: GH₵11,740.88
By January 31, 2025, the prices had changed to:
– 1-ounce coin: GH₵44,507.86
– Half-ounce coin: GH₵22,665.10
– Quarter-ounce coin: GH₵11,774.80
Gains and losses over the period
Investors who bought the GGC at launch would have seen the following changes in value:
– 1-ounce coin: A gain of GH₵104.18 (0.23% increase).
– Half-ounce coin: A gain of GH₵58.01 (0.26% increase).
– Quarter-ounce coin: A gain of GH₵33.92 (0.29% increase).
Factors behind price movement
The price fluctuation is mainly attributed to movements in the international gold market. On November 24, 2024, the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) PM gold price was $2,694.95, while the cedi-dollar exchange rate stood at 15.8, By January 30, 2025, gold prices had surged to $2,787.25, but the exchange rate had dropped to 15.3.
This increase in gold price helped offset the slight depreciation in the exchange rate, resulting in a minor overall gain for GGC holders.
While the Ghana Gold Coin has not seen drastic price swings, the marginal appreciation demonstrates its stability as a store of value. With gold recently hitting an all-time high of $2,798, further price increases could benefit those holding the GGC as a long-term investment.
For potential investors, the pricing mechanism—linked to international gold rates and exchange rates—ensures that the value of the coin remains dynamic, reflecting broader market conditions.
A number of appointments by President John Dramani Mahama to various positions in his government have raised eyebrows.
These appointees, who are set to head various state institutions and even fill positions at the seat of government, the Jubilee House, consist of individuals who are known members of other political parties or deemed “neutrals” in the eyes of many.
These neutrals are individuals who have never openly stated their political affiliations or have not been seen canvassing for votes for political parties.
A faction of the public has applauded President Mahama for these appointments, seeing them as an attempt to form an inclusive government, with the president relying on competency rather than political affiliation in making his decisions.
Others, however, see the appointments as a reward for those who hide behind the neutral tag to criticize the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government led by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Some even suggest that these appointees criticized the Akufo-Addo government because they were positioning themselves for appointments under a John Dramani Mahama administration.
But are these men and women deserving of their appointments, or did they simply criticize the Akufo-Addo government to win Mahama’s favor?
Below are brief profiles of the ‘neutrals’ and ‘non-NDC members’ who received appointments in Mahama’s government:

The COCOBOD acting CEO holds a PhD in Business Administration (DBA) from SBS Swiss Business School, an MBA in General Management, and certifications in dispute resolution.
His extensive career includes leadership roles such as Managing Director of Ignite Media Group, as well as serving on the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association and as President of Heart of Lions FC.
