2,712 Ghanaian Students ‘Missing’ In Canada – Report

0

A report from January 2025 by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has revealed that 2,712 Ghanaian international students in Canada did not enrol in their designated educational institutions.

The findings of the 2025 report by Immigration, Refugees, Citizenship Canada, indicate that over 50,000 students who arrived in Canada on study permits are unaccounted for, with the majority coming from India, which alone accounted for 19,582 students.

Other countries with significant numbers of missing students included China with 4,279 and Nigeria with 3,902, while Ghana ranked fourth among the top 20 countries.

Conducted between March and April 2023, the report highlights the requirement for Canadian universities and colleges to submit biannual updates to the immigration department regarding the status of international students.

These reports are essential for confirming whether students are adhering to their study permit conditions, including enrolment and class attendance.

Among Ghanaian international students, those who remain compliant and actively participating in their studies number 5,881, which represents approximately 67.4% of the enrolled population.

The report also noted that other African nations experiencing similar issues include the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Algeria, and Cameroon.

This situation has sparked significant concern regarding potential abuses of the education system by foreign nationals, as well as issues surrounding visa fraud.

In response, Canadian immigration experts have suggested that prospective international students should be required to pay their tuition fees in full before arriving in Canada.

They believe this measure could close existing loopholes that allow individuals to exploit the system and prevent misuse of the student visa programme.

Several viral videos have emerged of Senior High School students praising the John Dramani Mahama-led government for the drastic improvement in the quality of meals they have been receiving.

The latest video features students from Twifo Praso Senior High School in the Central Region.

One student, while showing off her meal, is heard excitedly announcing that they had been served eggs at the dining hall.

“Wow! For the first time in the history of Twifo Praso Senior High School’s dining hall, there has never been waakye and eggs.

“But now that ‘ɛyɛ Zu’ is in power, we are eating waakye. Just look at how attractive it looks, with two eggs each,” the student exclaimed.

BoG Governor prioritizes reforms and stability in key agenda

0

Dr. Johnson Asiama, Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama, Bank of Ghana Governor

Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, the newly sworn-in Bank of Ghana Governor, outlined an ambitious agenda focused on monetary policy reforms, exchange rate stability and financial sector resilience.

During his inauguration ceremony on February 25, 2025, Dr. Asiama noted the need for decisive leadership to address the country’s macroeconomic challenges, including high inflation, fiscal deficits and debt levels, as the country embarks on an economic reset.

“The challenges before us require prudent macroeconomic policies to reset the economy,” Dr. Asiama stated.

“The Bank of Ghana must remain steadfast in its mission to maintain price stability, ensure a sound financial system and support economic growth.”

Dr. Asiama outlined six priority areas to guide his tenure. At the top of his agenda is recalibration of monetary policy to enhance transparency and efficiency.

He pledged to adopt a proactive approach to inflation management, leveraging advanced data analytics and artificial intelligence.

Inflation remained elevated in 2024, driven by a dry spell-induced higher food costs. Ghana’s inflationary profile in 2024 posted a mixed performance as price pressures in second half of the year erased disinflationary gains from first half of the year.

Food inflation ended the year at 27.80% vs. 27.10% in Dec-2023, while non-food inflation settled at 20.30% vs. 20.50% in Dec-2023. Consequently, the annual inflation rate end-2024 printed at 23.80%, exceeding the 22.0% target outer upper band under the IMF programme by 180bps.

Inflation print for January 2025 still remains elevated at 23.5 percent.

Additionally, the central bank will discontinue the use of differentiated cash reserve requirements, opting instead for open market operations to manage liquidity.

“We shall be consistent in our policy actions to avoid sending conflicting signals, as happened in the recent past. Our policies will be clear, predictable and responsive to emerging threats,” he said.

Taming forex volatility

Exchange rate stability emerged as a key focus, with Dr. Asiama vowing to curb currency speculation and excessive volatility.

The Bank of Ghana plans to implement strategic interventions, including a new foreign exchange law to replace the 2006 Foreign Exchange Act. The central bank will also deepen its participation in the Pan African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), enabling Ghanaian businesses to trade across Africa using local currencies instead of the US dollar.

“The days of currency speculation and exchange rate instability must come to an end. We will engineer a well-functioning and stable foreign exchange market to support economic activity,” Dr. Asiama declared.

To bolster Ghana’s foreign reserves, the central bank will reform its Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and leverage strategic foreign assets more effectively.

Dr. Asiama also highlighted plans to collaborate with fintech and remittance agencies to harness remittances as a major source of foreign exchange.

Banking sector revamp and digital finance push

On the regulatory front, the new Governor emphasised a need to address legacy challenges in the banking sector, including high non-performing loans and weak risk management practices.

He pledged to update the Banks and Specialized Deposit-Taking Institutions Act, 2016 to enhance the resolution framework for distressed institutions while maintaining financial stability.

Dr. Asiama also underscored the importance of financial inclusion and innovation, noting Ghana’s potential to become a regional hub for financial technology and digital assets.

“We will work toward a clear regulatory framework for digital assets, ensuring that new financial innovations are introduced in a safe and structured manner,” he said.

Fiscal alignment and institutional recovery

The Governor further called for greater fiscal and monetary policy coordination while maintaining the central bank’s operational independence.

He vowed to strengthen the Bank of Ghana’s institutional autonomy through amendments to the Bank of Ghana Act, 2002.

Finally, Dr. Asiama committed to reversing the central bank’s negative equity position, which has raised concerns about its financial stability and credibility. He announced plans to implement austere measures to reduce operational costs and achieve cost efficiency.

“The reset path we have embarked on is more than mere sloganeering,” Dr. Asiama concluded. “It is about restoring public trust, rebuilding confidence and ensuring that Ghana’s economy is stable, innovative and ready for the future.”

Ahi’s claim on Bodi roads false – Asenso-Boakye

0

Former Minister for Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has dismissed claims by the Member of Parliament for Bodi and Deputy Minister-designate for Trade and Industry, Sampson Ahi, that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government failed to construct any roads in the Bodi constituency.

Expressing shock and disappointment, Asenso-Boakye described Ahi’s comments as misleading and untrue.

During his vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, February 24, Ahi alleged that the NPP administration, under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, had not initiated or completed any road projects in the Bodi constituency.

He suggested that the government had neglected the area’s infrastructural needs, despite previous promises.

However, Asenso-Boakye, who oversaw the Roads and Highways Ministry during Akufo-Addo’s tenure, strongly refuted these claims. He maintained that several road projects had been completed or were ongoing in the constituency.

“This is absolutely false, and I find it quite unfortunate for the Deputy Minister-designate to make such false claims. Atta Bokai Junction to Bodi was completed by the Akufo-Addo administration. The road leading from Bodi to Akontombra is currently under construction. In fact, it is partly tarred, and the rest of the works are ongoing.”

His response highlights the ongoing debate over infrastructure development and the fulfillment of government promises in various constituencies.

FDA suspends Aveo Pharmaceuticals’ certification over opioid smuggling

0

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has suspended the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certification of Aveo Pharmaceuticals, an Indian drug manufacturer, following revelations of its involvement in the illegal distribution of opioid-based medications to West Africa.

The decision follows a BBC Africa Eye investigation, which exposed how Aveo Pharmaceuticals, through Westfin International, allegedly exported unapproved drugs containing tapentadol and carisoprodol to countries including Ghana, Nigeria, and Côte d’Ivoire.

These substances, classified as highly addictive opioids, pose serious health risks, including respiratory failure and death when abused.

In response to the exposé, the FDA has instructed Samos Pharma, a Ghana-based importer, to cease all dealings with Aveo Pharmaceuticals and Westfin International.

Furthermore, the registration process for six products from Masters Pharmaceutical Limited, which planned to use Aveo Pharmaceuticals as a contract manufacturer, has been put on hold.

The FDA reaffirmed its commitment to combating opioid abuse, highlighting ongoing enforcement efforts, including seizures, fines, and prosecutions of unauthorized drug distributors. It assured the public that it will continue to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to prevent the influx of dangerous pharmaceuticals into the country.

This latest action reinforces Ghana’s regulatory stance on illicit drug trafficking and strengthens ongoing measures to safeguard public health.

GFA demanded 50% kickback from World Cup bonuses – Alhaji Karim Grusah alleges

0

Veteran football administrator Alhaji Karim Grusah has made a shocking revelation, claiming that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) demanded a 50% kickback from the $100,000 World Cup bonuses paid to the Black Stars management committee members.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, the King Faisal owner disclosed that he was the one who first revealed the $100,000 payments, despite alleged attempts to keep it secret.

“I was the one who made it public that we received $100,000 because some people didn’t want it to be known. After the money was given to us, the GFA asked for a 50% kickback. They said it was to be shared with people who didn’t go to the World Cup, but that was not the original arrangement,” Grusah revealed.

The Black Stars participated in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, but their early exit from the tournament raised concerns over the use of funds allocated for Ghana’s campaign.

Grusah’s latest allegations further fuel suspicions about financial mismanagement within Ghanaian football. Meanwhile, the GFA is yet to respond to Grusah’s claims.

My biological mother hates me to the extreme and I don’t know what led to that

0

File photo of a worried man File photo of a worried man

Dear GhanaWeb,

My mother keeps saying she wishes she had aborted me when she got pregnant. I used to think she was joking, but every time I do something, she becomes extremely bitter and tells me she regrets having me, that her life has been miserable ever since she kept my pregnancy.

The same things my siblings do, if I do them, she reacts with extreme bitterness. I am the second child, with an older sister and two younger brothers.

There was a time when my sister, one of my younger brothers, and I went out and returned home late. Although she was angry at all of us, she let them in while insisting that I sleep outside. I had to spend the night on a carpenter’s table outside the house until morning.

She gets hurt by the smallest things I do but tolerates far worse from my siblings. All of them attended the boarding schools of their choice, but when it was my turn, my mother said she didn’t have money, so I had to attend a day school.

I am now sponsoring myself through university, working alongside my studies. Meanwhile, my older sister has completed university, and my younger siblings are currently there, fully supported by my mother.

Our father is late, but he left enough to take care of all of us, yet my mother doesn’t give me anything. Even if I eat her leftover food without asking, she complains, while my siblings freely eat anything in the house without permission.

I don’t understand why my biological mother treats me this way and hates me so much. I can’t even talk to her about the same things my siblings discuss with her.

When we are home alone, she stays in her room all day and avoids me. But when my siblings are around, she is always with them.

She never sends me on important errands, only house chores. If she needs help with something academic or even something as simple as fixing something on her phone, she never asks me.

She will wait indefinitely until one of my siblings does it. It feels like she is hiding everything from me. Important family matters, I only hear about them from our last born because he is close to me.

Meanwhile, I am academically smarter than all my siblings.

Why doesn’t she like me? I wish I had answers to all the questions I ask myself. I have been going through a lot, and I’ve never been a happy person since childhood.

Has anyone else experienced this trauma? How did you handle it?

How Dr. Apaak backtracked on his statements against Akufo-Addo, Bawumia

0

Dr. Clement Apaak is the Deputy Minister of Education-designate Dr. Clement Apaak is the Deputy Minister of Education-designate

The Deputy Minister of Education-designate, Dr. Clement Abass Apaak demonstrated a high level of maturity and accountability during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament.

The lawmaker displayed humility when, in response to a request from the Ranking Member of the Committee, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, offered an apology and retracted certain statements he had made in the past regarding the former New Patriotic Party government.

Afenyo-Markin confronted Dr. Apaak, referencing a statement made by him on his X account dated September 2024.

The statement in question, which characterised the former Akufo-Addo/Bawumia-led government as “corrupt, useless, and reckless,” accused the previous administration of failing to take decisive action against illegal mining.

Dr. Apaak further alleged that members of the New Patriotic Party were benefiting from the destruction of forest reserves and water bodies caused by illegal mining activities.

However, Afenyo-Markin took the opportunity to voice his concerns and dissatisfaction with the tone and language used by the deputy minister-designate when addressing the former leaders, demanding both an apology and a retraction of the statement.

“Do you stand by this statement or you believe that with the benefit of hindsight, you could have used a more measured language as a politician? I understand you made this in the heat of the campaign but would you say that you could have been more measured in the language you used?” Afenyo-Markin said.

Dr. Apaak backtracked on his earlier statement admitting that the language used against Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia were inappropriate.

“I must admit that the language was rather harsh, I’m grateful,” he conceded.

He went ahead to apologise for claiming that the former government was profiting from the destructions caused by illegal miners, explaining that his statement was influenced by the findings from a report by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, a former Chairman of the Inter Ministerial Committee on Illegal Minning.

The committee was tasked to conduct findings on the effects of small-scale mining activities in the country.

“Whiles it is fair to admit that the content of this post could have been better presented, I must admit that it was influenced by the Prof. Frimpong Boateng statement as contained in the report that was in the public domain for discussion.

“Given the context provided, it is only fair and appropriate that I concede. I was rather too excessive in blaming an entire government for the infractions of a few, I’m grateful,” he added.

His vetting however proceeded smoothly after his apologies.

Alef Aeronautics are not the only ones trying to make flying cars take off with buyers play videoAlef Aeronautics are not the only ones trying to make flying cars take off with buyers

An aeronautical company in the US has released footage showing a concept version of its flying car performing a vertical take-off before flying over an SUV.

Jim Dukhovny, the CEO of Alef Aeronautics, told the BBC’s senior technology reporter Chris Vallance, that he had thousands of pre-orders and hoped to start production within 12 months.

For around $300,000 (£237,000) the company says buyers will get an electric flying car with a predicted airborne range of 110km (68 miles). But taking a friend for a spin may prove tricky – the cockpit only has enough room for one and a half people.

As Vallance points out, Alef Aeronautics are not the only ones trying to make flying cars take off with buyers. There are also huge technological and regulatory hurdles to overcome, so there’s still a long way to go before science fiction becomes reality.

Ghanaian coach Isaac Opeele Boateng has opened up about an ordeal he went through while managing a local club.

According to him, there was a moment when the authorities in charge of the unnamed club warned him not to allow Christian prayers, regardless of a player’s religious affiliation.

The former Kotoko coach noted that he was compelled to allow only Muslim prayers in camp to stay aligned with their wishes, even though he was not comfortable with the decision.

Coach Opeele emphasized that there were other interferences in his job, including player selections, and expressed worry about how coaches are handled in Ghana.

“Then Laryea can’t be a coach in Ghana. Does he know what we’ve been through at local clubs? A club I was coaching banned Christian prayers; I was only allowed to permit Muslim prayers.

“We’ve seen a lot, including player selection interference. We go through worse in Ghana,” he wrote on X.

He commented after former Ghana U-17 coach Laryea Kingston shared his experience of how some Ghana Football Association (GFA) officials were interfering in his job during his stint with the team.

“Imagine, before a game, someone from the FA comes to give a speech to the team and says to the players, ‘If you don’t win the game against Côte d’Ivoire, your coach is going to lose his job.’ When I saw these things, I realized the environment just wasn’t good for me,” Kingston disclosed during an interview with Joy Sports.

Despite the breakup, the latest clips show him appearing relaxed and happy. This has sparked debates, with some applauding him for moving on, while others expressed surprise at his swift social resurgence.

Social media users shared their thoughts on the viral video:

– @Favour wrote: “More love, Auntie.”

– @Major Prophet Kofi Nyame commented: “Hi, you’re too close to her.”

– @Ernestina added: “Awwnn… This is beautiful.”

– @Fraternal Twins reacted: “Eiiiii.”

While some believe the apostle is simply enjoying his newfound freedom, others have raised eyebrows at his lively demeanor so soon after his publicized separation.

Angel Carbonu Appears To Have Gone Into Hibernation When Teachers Need Him More Than Ever

0

P.K. Sarpong, a writer for the opposition NPP, has asserted that Eric Angel Carbonu, the President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), appears to have gone into hibernation when teachers need him more than ever.

P.K. Sarpong made this comment in a post shared on his Facebook page on 26th December, 2025.

P.K Sarpong lamented that, a number of teachers recruited by the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration between September and November, 2024, have become pawns in John Dramani Mahama’s chess game.

He continued that President Mahama, through his Chief of Staff, has terminated the appointments of these teachers who would have augmented the numbers in the classrooms as far as teaching is concerned.

“These beleaguered teachers have been ranting, desperately crying and screaming at the top of their voices, in their attempts to get the leadership of teacher unions to stand by their side in their fight for survival.

Angel Carbonu, the President of NAGRAT, has kept quiet in the face of this injustice these sacked teachers are suffering from the Mahama Presidency. He is nowhere to be found when he is needed the most by the dismissed teachers.” P.K. Sarpong wrote.

He stated that, under the Akufo-Addo administration, the least issue would attract lengthy interviews by Angel Carbonu. He would complain, blame the government with the sole objective of painting the then administration black.

However, when the NDC came in power and has been insensitively dismissing these innocent teachers, but for reasons best known to Mr. Carbonu, he doesn’t seem to care.

P.K. Sarpong complained that, all of a sudden, Angel Carbonu has stopped talking about the welfare of teachers in general and these teachers in particular. The one who, under the previous administration, cared so much about teachers appears to have suddenly gone on a hiatus.

“The voice of the voiceless teacher, Eric Angel Carbonu, seems to have gone with the wind. What could really be the reason? Why was he so vocal under Akufo-Addo, but has gone deafeningly silent today? Angel Carbonu, where exactly are you?”

Australia’s ASIC to probe WiseTech after mass exodus of management, founder’s return

0

Australia’s corporate regulator has initiated “preliminary inquiries” into WiseTech Global (WTC.AX), it said on Wednesday, amid a tumultuous week that also saw a mass exodus of executives and the surprise return of founder Richard White as chairman.

Earlier this week, four of WiseTech’s non-executive directors stepped down owing to differing views around White’s former role as CEO. The company then appointed White as its executive chairman in a surprise announcement early on Wednesday.

“We are conducting preliminary inquiries and will be making decisions imminently about any next steps for ASIC,” Joe Longo, chairman of the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC), said in an emailed response to Reuters.

WiseTech Global did not immediately respond to a Reuters’ request for comment.

The logistics software maker, founded by billionaire White, has been navigating a period marked by media allegations of misconduct, corporate governance concerns and a sagging share price.

Its stock has declined around 14% since last October, when WiseTech said it had been reviewing matters related to White.

Shares rose 2.1% to A$96.5 on Wednesday following the founder’s return.

President Mahama vows to keep BoG free from political influence

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated the Government’s commitment to ensuring that the Bank of Ghana (BoG) operates free from political interference, guided solely by its mandate.

“This is the path to building a resilient economy—one where policies are driven by discipline, foresight, and the best interests of the Ghanaian people,” President stated on Tuesday when he officially sworn into office Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama as the Governor and Zakari Mumuni as the First Deputy Governor of the Central Bank at the seat of Government in Accra.

The President reiterated that the Government would not ask the Central Bank to print money for it.

“I encourage you to work closely with key institutions, including the Ministry of Finance, Parliament and the financial industry while maintaining the independence your mandate requires.”

The swearing-in follows the approval of the Council of State.

The President extended his congratulations to Dr Asiama and Dr Mumuni and expressed confidence in their expertise, vision and integrity to discharge their mandate with excellence.

President Mahama urged them to go beyond mere technical considerations and act in full recognition that every statistic, every movement on a chart, and every shift in an index was more than just data—it was the pulse of an economy, a measure of resilience or distress.

He said a dip in confidence indices might signal businesses on a brink, evolving market conditions, or changing household prospects.

He said behind these numbers were real human stories—dreams either nurtured or shattered—that demanded not just highly extolled analytical expertise, but empathy and foresight that acknowledged the profound human consequences of every decision.

President Mahama noted that recent banking history had shown Ghanaians the cost of neglecting this truth.

He said during the supposed banking sector cleanup exercise thousands of jobs were lost and lives disrupted because decisions were made with a narrow focus rather than considerations of the human impact.

“The Bank of Ghana had the opportunity to salvage some institutions, to protect livelihoods while ensuring stability, but instead, an approach that ignored human consequences prevailed,” the President said

“The test of your patriotism in this solemn duty of economic governance lies in learning from these missteps—recognizing that policies must not only enforce regulations but also safeguard the future that depend on them.”

He said the lessons of the past reminded Ghanaians of the dangers of fiscal recklessness and the lasting harm it could inflict on an economy.

He said when governments resorted to unsustainable consumption expenditure, financed by excessive and unregulated printing of money, the consequences were severe— from spiraling inflation, erosion of incomes to driving millions into poverty.

The President said such actions, not only weakened public confidence in financial institutions but also threatened long-term stability.

“To safeguard our economy from these risks, we must uphold responsible fiscal management, strict adherence to legal and regulatory frameworks and protect the independence of the Bank of Ghana.”

On his part, Dr Asiama expressed gratitude to the President and the Council of State for the confidence reposed in them.

He said the challenges facing Ghanaians require decisive leadership and prudent macroeconomic policies to reset the economy.

“Indeed, the Bank of Ghana is a key institution in this agenda to reset the economy and must remain steadfast in its mission to maintain price stability, ensure a sound financial system, and support economic growth,” he said.

Dr Asiama said as Governor, his focus would be on six priority areas; such as the need to recalibrate Ghana’s Monetary Policy Strategy and enhance the policy framework to achieve the mandate more efficiently.

He said his second priority was the need to preserve exchange rate stability and limit excessive volatility in the rates.

He also mentioned the need to boost financial inclusion and innovation to promote inclusive economic growth, reduce poverty, empower individuals, and ensure the stability and competitiveness of the financial system.

“The reset path we have embarked on is more than mere sloganeering. It is about restoring public trust, rebuilding confidence, and ensuring that Ghana’s economy is stable, innovative and ready for the future,” Dr Asiama said.

Ghana faces supply disruptions as Burkina Faso halts cereal exports

0

Ghanaian traders and businesses have been cautioned to strictly adhere to Burkina Faso’s ongoing export ban on cereals and white beans, warning of potential sanctions for non-compliance.

In a statement issued on Tuesday (25 February), Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs referenced official communications from Burkina Faso—joint communiqués No. 023-0017 dated 19 December 2023, and No. 024-0017 dated 13 November 2024—affirming the restriction on the export of essential food staples such as rice, millet, maize, sorghum, and cowpeas.

Burkina Faso imposed the ban to safeguard domestic food security amid escalating concerns over grain shortages and soaring prices across the region.

“Ghanaian traders and businesses involved in importing these commodities from Burkina Faso are advised to take note of this directive and comply accordingly to avoid any sanctions or confiscation of goods,” the statement emphasized.

Initially announced in December 2023, the restrictions were introduced to address food sufficiency concerns triggered by adverse climatic conditions affecting agricultural production. The extension of the ban, as reaffirmed in the November 2024 communique, underscores Burkina Faso’s firm stance on stabilizing its local food supplies.

Ghana, a key importer of cereals from its northern neighbor, is expected to experience supply disruptions and possible price surges in local markets due to the restriction.

Economic analysts warn of a massive impact on Ghana’s food security, particularly for industries that rely heavily on imported grains and legumes.

In light of the ban, local traders—especially those operating along border regions—are urged to explore alternative sourcing strategies and adjust their supply chains to cushion the economic effect.

“We understand the implications for Ghanaian businesses, but compliance is crucial to maintaining smooth bilateral trade relations,” the Ministry stated.

The Foreign Ministry further urged affected stakeholders to stay informed through official government channels and collaborate with relevant authorities for guidance on alternative trade solutions.

Ghana’s diplomatic missions in Ouagadougou and border agencies will closely monitor developments and assist traders in navigating the evolving trade landscape.

With climate-related agricultural challenges increasingly affecting food production across West Africa, experts stress the importance of regional cooperation and proactive contingency planning.

The Ministry assured the public that it will continue engaging Burkinabe authorities to find mutually beneficial solutions that limit economic disruptions while respecting Burkina Faso’s domestic food security policies.

For now, Ghanaian businesses are advised to exercise vigilance, comply with trade regulations, and diversify sourcing options to maintain market stability amid the unfolding situation.

Members of the entertainment fraternity have expressed disappointment in First Deputy Minority Whip Habib Iddrisu over a remark he made about the creative arts industry during the vetting of Deputy Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo.

During Dumelo’s vetting on February 25, 2025, Habib Iddrisu cautioned the nominee against taking his political career lightly, emphasizing that his role was not within the movie industry.

Iddrisu urged Dumelo to approach his ministerial duties with utmost seriousness.

“If you go to the ministry, try to assist your minister. The ministry is vast, and you should not try to jump the gun. Also, note that when you go to the ministry, you are no longer in the movie industry. Try to be as serious as you can so that you can support your minister in succeeding,” Iddrisu stated.

His comment has sparked reactions on social media, with some netizens calling on the Deputy Minority Whip to issue an unqualified apology to the movie industry.

While some demand an apology to the creative arts sector, others are questioning Habib Iddrisu’s intelligence.

SML Suit: I stand by everything I wrote

0

Samson Lardy Anyenini (L) would be defending Manasseh Azure Awuni (R) in the SML suit Samson Lardy Anyenini (L) would be defending Manasseh Azure Awuni (R) in the SML suit

Renowned investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has waived personal service in the GH¢21 million defamation suit filed against him by Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) over claims he made about the company in his book, ‘The President Ghana Never Got’.

Manasseh, in a post shared on X on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, indicated that his lawyer has written to the court where the suit was filed to receive a copy of it.

He said that his lawyers would appear before the court to start his defence, stating that he stands by everything he said about the company in the book.

“My lawyers have written to the court and have been served the writ of SML’s GHS21 million defamation suit against me. They will enter appearance today, and the rest of the processes will continue.

“I stand by everything I have published on the SML scandal and am ready to defend it in court,” he wrote on X.

The post had a copy of the ‘Waiver of Personal Service’ filed by the lawyer of the journalist, renowned legal practitioner and broadcaster, Samson Lardy Anyenini.

The lawyer stated that he had been instructed by Manasseh to receive the suit.

“We are solicitors for Manasseh Azure Awuni, who is named as Defendant in the above-named publicised suit (ie. a Writ and Statement of Claim). Our firm is on record as his lawyers, including in the suit filed on February 15, 2024, by this same Plaintiff with same legal representation (i.e. STRATEGIC MOBILIZATION GHANA LTD. VS. MEDIA FOUNDATION FOR WEST AFRICA & MANASSEH AZURE AWUNI with SUIT NO. GJ/0431/2024) on the same subject of the famed SML deal.

“Our client instructs us, pursuant to Order 7 Rule 12 of C1. 47, to receive a copy of a suit numbered GJ/0117/2025 widely circulated in both traditional and social media, and said to have been filed on November 7, 2024. Our address for service remains as first above, and as in previous processes before this court, I shall be counsel with direct conduct of this matter for the Defendant,” the document reads.

Background:

Manasseh Azure Awuni was sued by Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited over claims made in his book, ‘The President Ghana Never Got’, regarding the company.

SML accuses Manasseh of publishing defamatory content, particularly in Chapter 28, titled “The Mother of All Scandals”.

In a writ of summons filed at the High Court of General Jurisdiction, which has been sighted by GhanaWeb, SML asserts that the journalist misrepresented facts with the deliberate intent to tarnish its reputation.

“The Plaintiff avers that, notwithstanding the pending defamation suit, the Defendant, in Chapter 28 of his book ‘The President Ghana Never Got’, discusses the Plaintiff’s contract with the Government of Ghana (GoG) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in a chapter titled ‘The Mother of All Scandals’. The Plaintiff says that in Chapter 28, the Defendant makes several non-factual statements that tarnish the Plaintiff’s reputation and have caused right-thinking members of society to shun the Plaintiff.”

SML further states that Manasseh characterized its contract with the GoG and GRA as “the biggest scam,” a “shady deal,” and referred to it as “the SML scandal.”

Additionally, the journalist allegedly described statements and projections made by SML regarding its contracts as “falsehoods” and “a lie” and labeled the agreement “needless” and “redundant.”

The company contends that these allegations severely damaged its reputation, leading to public backlash and the loss of potential contracts in Tanzania, Kenya, and Ivory Coast.

Claims SML is seeking from the Court:

• GH¢1,000,000 in general damages for defamation.

• GH¢20,000,000 in exemplary damages for what it describes as malicious reporting.

• A perpetual injunction restraining Manasseh from publishing further defamatory statements about the company.

• A public retraction and apology for Chapter 28 of his book.

• Any other reliefs the court deems fit.

Akufo-Addo discloses how government can attract the youth to agriculture

0

Former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo stated in February 2024 that it was time to make agriculture more attractive to the youth.

He emphasized that making agricultural machinery and equipment easily accessible to farmers was a step in the right direction.

While giving the State of the Nation Address in Parliament, he said, “Mr Speaker, the surest way of making agriculture attractive to young people is to take the drudgery out of farming, and government is continuing to make agricultural machinery and equipment easily available.

Read the full story originally published on February 27, 2024 by www.ghanaweb.com.

Agriculture, they say is the backbone of every economy, yet, it has not been given the needed attention by government over the years.

While farmers are selling their farmlands in exchange for promises including money, others, including the youth find the sector unattractive.

To help address this problem, President Akufo-Addo said the only way of making agriculture attractive to the youth was to take out drudgery from the sector.

He, however, said government was making agricultural machinery and equipment easily available to farmers.

“Mr Speaker, the surest way of making agriculture attractive to young people is to take the drudgery out of farming, and government is continuing to make agricultural machinery and equipment easily available,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

He added that, “Under the third and final tranche of the Brazilian More Food Programme, tractors with accompanying implements, power tillers with accessories, maize shellers, units of combine harvesters, and rice millers have been distributed to farmers, processors and mechanisation service providers on hire purchase arrangement”.

“This year, under the Indian Exim Facility, tractors with matching implements, planters, boom sprayers, combine harvesters and corn pickers will also be made available,” he added.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo disclosed this while delivering the State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Tuesday, February 27, 2024.
