Ibrahim Tanko gives insight into Micheal Osei’s death

0

Medeama head coach Ibrahim Tanko has shed light on the passing of former Asante Kotoko coach Michael Osei, revealing that he succumbed to heart complications.

Tanko made the revelation during a roundtable discussion with former Black Stars players on the Inside PFAG YouTube channel.

He confirmed that Michael Osei had a history of heart problems and had undergone surgery, though he was uncertain about the exact location of the procedure.

“I think his passing was related to his heart. Yes, he had surgery. I believe it was in London,” Tanko stated.

“I spoke with him while he was in Germany. He went to London before arriving in Germany, so I’m not sure whether he had the operation in England or Germany.”

Tanko’s statement aligns with earlier remarks from Tony Oduro, the secretary of Asante Kotoko Legends, who also cited heart issues as the cause of Osei’s death.

In an interview with GhanaWeb, Oduro disclosed that the former Bibiani Gold Stars coach had been fitted with a heart enhancer due to his condition.

“He collapsed. Michael had heart issues and had a heart enhancer, but I can’t confirm if that was the cause,” Oduro said. “I spoke with him last Thursday, and he mentioned receiving offers from Ghanaian clubs but was waiting on Klopp. They were teammates, and he said Klopp was willing to help him secure a coaching role.”

Michael Osei, who had taken a break from coaching in 2023, passed away on Friday, November 15, 2024, at the age of 53.

GIDA engineers assess challenges at Weta Irrigation Scheme

0

By Michael Foli Jackidy

Weta (V/R), Feb. 26, GNA – A team of engineers and officials from the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA) has visited the Weta Irrigation Scheme to assess the critical challenges affecting rice farmers in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region.

The inspection tour was aimed at identifying immediate and long-term solutions to restore the scheme’s efficiency and safeguard the livelihoods of over 1,200 farming families.

Speaking with GNA, after the visit, the Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Mr. Eric Edem Agbana, assured farmers that urgent measures would be taken in the coming weeks to provide short-term relief before the start of the new farming season.

“Our priority is to restore the scheme as quickly as possible so that farmers can reclaim their lands and prepare for the next planting season. This is crucial in preventing further losses and ensuring food security in the region,” Mr. Agbana said.

He added that long-term rehabilitation efforts would also be implemented in the next few months to make the irrigation scheme sustainable for farmers.

The Weta Irrigation Scheme, one of the largest in the country, has fallen into a state of disrepair, threatening over 1,000 hectares of arable land, and affecting the incomes of thousands of people.

The breakdown of infrastructure, including irrigation canals and water pumps, has reduced the scheme’s efficiency, leaving farmers struggling to cultivate their fields.

The economic impact has been severe, with over 10,000 indirect dependents across 23 surrounding communities facing difficulties due to declining agricultural productivity.

Mr Agbana reassured farmers that he remains committed to fully resolving the crisis and ensuring that they can return to productive farming.

“To the over 1,200 families affected by this crisis, I want you to know that I will not rest until this issue is fully resolved. Our farmers are the backbone of our community, and their success is our collective success,” he said.

He also promised transparency and open governance, pledging to keep the public informed of every step taken to rehabilitate the irrigation system.

“As I promised during the election campaign, I will ensure transparent and open governance, keeping you informed every step of the way. We are in this together, my dear farmers,” he assured.

The visit by GIDA engineers marks a significant step in addressing the long-standing issues affecting the Weta Irrigation Scheme.

Farmers remain hopeful that the government’s intervention will restore the scheme’s functionality and boost rice production in the region.

Meanwhile, stakeholders, including local authorities and agricultural experts, are expected to collaborate to ensure a lasting solution to the challenges facing the irrigation project.

‘Use Consultative Approach To Enforce Regulations’

0

Jerry Owusu, General Secretary of LPG

The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), has urged the Ministry of Communications and the National Communications Authority (NCA) to consider a more consultative approach to regulatory enforcement on the six radio stations that have been shut down.

According to the LPG, instead of immediate shutdowns, the two authorities should have engaged the affected media houses, provided clear and considerable timelines for compliance, and explored flexible payment arrangements to ensure struggling businesses meet their obligations without being forced to close.

The General Secretary of LPG, Jerry Owusu, in a press statement dated February 19, 2025, stated that the media serves as a vital pillar of the country’s democracy, providing a voice for the people, facilitating national discourse and creating employment opportunities.

It would be recalled that the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam George, on February 18, directed the Acting Director General of the NCA to take immediate enforcement action against several entities for operating without valid frequency authorisations in violation of Section 2(4) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775).

The entities affected include Fire Group of Companies, Sunyani-90.1 MHz; I-Zar Consult Limited, Tamale- 89.7MHz; Abochannel Media Group, Adidome-105.7MHz; Okyeamen Radio Limited, Bibiani- 99.7MHz; Mumin Bono Foundation, Techiman-99.7MHz and Osikani Community FM – Nkrankwanta-99.7MHz.

The Communications Ministry, in a statement on Tuesday, February 18, noted that the six radio stations failed to renew their authorisations, fulfil statutory payment obligations, or submit the required documentation within the stipulated timeframe.

But, while acknowledging the importance of regulatory compliance, the LPG strongly believe that a more constructive approach could have been taken to prevent job losses, especially in these difficult economic times.

“The abrupt shutdown of these stations without thorough engagement and alternative solutions has put the hardworking journalists and media workers at risk of unemployment. This decision will not only affect those directly employed by the affected stations but also their families and dependents, worsening the economic hardship many Ghanaians are already facing,” the LPG General Secretary asserted.

He extended his sympathy to the affected media houses and their employees, who now face uncertainty due to this decision, encouraging them to engage with the NCA, take the necessary steps toward compliance, and explore all possible measures to have their licenses reinstated.

The LPG, he noted, remains committed to advocating for a regulatory environment that supports businesses while ensuring adherence to the law.

Scrapping ex-gratia may be faster depending on approach – Srem-Sai

0

The Deputy Attorney General and Minister Designate for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, has indicated that the scrapping of ex-gratia, as promised by President John Dramani Mahama, could be achieved through various approaches, with some taking less time than others.

In June 2024, then-flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, reaffirmed his commitment to abolishing ex-gratia payments to public officials if elected. He also pledged to address disparities in the remuneration of Article 71 officeholders compared to the broader public service.

“Abolish the payment of ex-gratia and cut out waste and ostentation in government. Address the disparities in the remuneration of Article 71 officeholders and the broader public service,” Mahama declared while launching the NDC’s manifesto in Winneba, Central Region, on August 24, 2024.

During his vetting before the Appointments Committee on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, Justice Srem-Sai explained that while amending Article 71 of the 1992 Constitution is one way to eliminate ex-gratia, it is a lengthy and complex process.

However, an alternative approach involving regular legislation could provide a faster solution.

“There are a couple of ways by which the ex-gratia matter can be dealt with. One could be through a constitutional amendment. If you read Article 71 critically, the Constitution itself doesn’t prescribe a formula for determining the remuneration and entitlements of the specified class of persons. It only states that a committee will determine that.

“Last year, the committee sought to expand the list of beneficiaries, but the Supreme Court halted it. What I see is that it is the committee’s recommendation that is the problem. That can be resolved by passing an act of parliament to prescribe the formula,” he stated.

He further suggested that instead of abolishing ex-gratia through a constitutional amendment, which could be time-consuming, parliament could pass a law regulating the committee’s recommendations.

“If you want to go by the constitution, it will take a longer time. But you could solve that problem with regular legislation. It could determine what the committee recommends. If the committee decides there will be no payment or recommends any payment, parliament may approve it, and the president may also approve that of parliament. So, depending on the approach used, the process could be either long or short,” he added.

Ignorant, disrespectful, insulting – FOCAP slams Tolon MP over demeaning ‘movie industry’ remark

0

Habib Iddrisu and Kojo Preko Dankwa Habib Iddrisu and Kojo Preko Dankwa

President of the Foundation of Concerned Arts Professionals (FOCAP), Kojo Preko Dankwa, has strongly criticised the Member of Parliament of Tolon, Habib Iddrisu, for his recent comments during the vetting of Deputy Minister of Agriculture-designate, John Dumelo.

Iddrisu has been under fire from some industry personalities and netizens on social media after he advised Dumelo, a former actor, to focus on his role as he was “no longer in the movie industry” and that he should be “as serious as he can.”

However, speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie on February 26, 2025, Dankwa described the MP’s remarks as ignorant, disrespectful, and insulting to the creative arts industry.

“Frankly speaking, the MP has clearly shown ignorance. He has clearly shown disrespect. He shouldn’t forget that he’s sitting there talking into a microphone, which is a product of creativity. The clothes he’s wearing were made by a creative. Without creatives, he would have gone naked,” Dankwa stated.

He emphasised the vital role creatives play in society and demanded that the MP apologises for his comments.

“It was very insulting for him to say what he said. He should apologise to the industry. We are not going to sit down for anybody to use any language on us,” Dankwa added.

Dankwa also called for a shift in the perception of creatives in Ghana, arguing that such outdated views have been disadvantageous to the sector for too long.

“The narrative needs to change. We’ve held onto the old perception that becoming a lawyer or doctor is more important than being a creative. Little do we know that creatives are among the most important people in our lives,” he said.

He urged creatives to take charge of their narrative and advocate for their value in nation-building.

“If we as creatives begin to tell our own stories correctly, we can rewrite the history of creatives in this space. Unfortunately, many of us are still waiting for someone else to do it for us. It has to start now, or we’ll pass the same outdated perceptions to our children,” Dankwa emphasised.

The comments have reignited discussions about the value of creatives in Ghana, with many calling for greater recognition and support for the industry.

Supreme Court refuses NPP MP Kumi audience for disrespecting High Court

0

The Member of Parliament (MP), Ernest Yaw Kumi The Member of Parliament (MP), Ernest Yaw Kumi

The Supreme Court has reportedly thrown out embattled New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP), Ernest Yaw Kumi, according to GhOne TV.

The incident reportedly happened on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, when the NPP MP appeared before the apex court of the land.

The court refused to give Yaw Kumi audience, stating that he refused to show respect to the High Court that convicted him.

“Supreme Court refuses to grant audience to Ernest Yaw Kumi, stating he has failed to show respect to the Koforidua High Court,” a post shared by GhOne TV on Wednesday.

A Koforidua High Court issued a bench warrant for Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament (MP) of Akwatia in the Eastern Region, after convicting him of contempt of court.

According to multiple reports, the bench warrant was issued after Kumi failed to appear in court.

The MP had disobeyed an interim injunction issued on January 7, 2025, which barred him from being sworn in and admitted as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Akwatia constituency due to an ongoing legal dispute over his election.

Despite the court order, Kumi presented himself in Parliament and was sworn in on January 7, 2025.

Presiding Judge Justice Senyo Amedahe ruled that the convict had consistently failed to appear in court throughout the contempt case.

He also dismissed a letter from the Minority Caucus, which argued that the MP was occupied with parliamentary duties and, therefore, could not attend court sessions.

The judge rejected the letter, stating that accepting it would contradict his ruling.

Yaw Kumi’s party, the NPP, announced that a legal action would be made against the justice who convicted him at the Supreme Court.

Addressing the press at Parliament on Thursday, February 20, 2025, the MP of Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, reading a statement on behalf of the caucus, stated that multiple legal actions had been taken in response to the judge’s ruling, including an application before the Supreme Court.

“At this stage, let me further state that legal steps have been taken, and a notice of appeal has been filed against the High Court’s ruling at the Court of Appeal. An application for a stay of execution pending appeal has also been filed at High Court Number 3 in Koforidua.

“Moreover, all parties to the prohibition application, including the judge, His Lordship Justice Emmanuel Senyo Amedahe, who is the respondent in this application before the Supreme Court, have been duly served. Further legal steps will be taken, and the Minority Caucus in Parliament will keep the Ghanaian public informed on the way forward,” he said.

The Weija-Gbawe legislator also argued that the High Court judge erred in his ruling. He stated that it was improper for the judge to demand the filing of an appearance in a quasi-criminal matter.

“When someone previously came before you, you allowed the person to open a phone to provide details of a certain WhatsApp message or publication. But when a lawyer stands in for a client in a contempt matter, you insist the lawyer must file an appearance in a quasi-criminal case? Eii, Justice Senyo Amedahe,” he said.

Deputy finance minister’s performance at vetting was disappointing

Godfred Bokpin is a professor of finance and economics at the University of Ghana Godfred Bokpin is a professor of finance and economics at the University of Ghana

A professor of finance and economics at the University of Ghana, Professor Godfred Bokpin, has shared his thoughts on the performance of the Deputy Minister of Finance-nominee Thomas Nyarko Ampem.

Thomas Nyarko Ampem appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, February 24, 2025, for his vetting.

During his vetting, he identified the economic challenges that need to be addressed and proposed solutions to the challenges.

In a conversation on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Prof. Godfred analysed the performance of the deputy minister nominee, observing that the nominee could have demonstrated a deeper understanding of his portfolio.

He emphasised that the nominee will have the opportunity to learn under the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.

“Well, he may not have delivered consistently on our expectations, but I believe that he would learn from this and take advantage to be able to assert himself,” he stated.

Prof Bokpin noted that Thomas Nyarko Ampem did not provide detailed answers to the questions, but relied on general statements.

“There is nothing wrong, and it is not a case of you trying to outshine your minister or so, but within your own space, having listened to the minister during the vetting, you want to be able to fill in the gaps, you want to be able to tighten the loose ends.

“From that perspective, I felt that he could have done better. I was a bit disappointed” he added.

Pro Bokpin concluded that the president shouldn’t rely solely on reducing the number of ministers as a way to solve problems, but also focus on solving the systematic challenges facing the country.

“The over-concentration on cutting the number of ministers and ministries, and all of that, a time will come when that will not have economic value going forward,” he said.

World Cup is the best football tournament

0

West Ham midfielder Mohammed Kudus has described the FIFA World Cup as the pinnacle of football, ranking it above all other competitions.

He had his first taste of the tournament in 2022 when the Black Stars competed in Qatar. Despite Ghana’s early exit, Kudus made a strong impression, scoring two goals in three appearances and being named Man-of-the-Match.

Speaking to Rising Ballers, Kudus expressed his admiration for the tournament.

“I think the World Cup is the best football tournament. The Champions League is up there, but the World Cup was just different in Qatar, my first time,” he said. “My family flew all the way to support, so it was an amazing feeling.”

Though Ghana fell short of progressing further, Kudus cherished the experience.

“We didn’t go as far as I would have loved us to go, but it was nice to experience the World Cup. To be part of it was great,” he added.

The 24-year-old now has his sights set on helping Ghana qualify for the 2026 World Cup, following the disappointment of missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Fashion that Empowers and Inspires

0

Children’s fashion is about more than just comfort—it’s also an opportunity to express individuality, creativity, and confidence from a young age. As kids grow, their sense of style begins to take shape, and what they wear can inspire their confidence and creativity. Whether for a special occasion, a day at school, or playtime, here are some inspirational style ideas for kids that combine fun, functionality, and flair.

1. Bold Prints and Patterns

Kids love colors, and bold prints are an excellent way to bring energy and personality into their wardrobes. From floral prints and polka dots to stripes and geometric patterns, these vibrant designs make outfits stand out and express a child’s lively nature. Mixing and matching prints—such as pairing striped shirts with polka dot pants or floral skirts with geometric tops—can create unique looks that show off their creativity. Allowing children to experiment with prints helps them develop their fashion sense and boosts their confidence.

2. Comfortable Athleisure

The rise of athleisure in children’s fashion is not just about comfort, it’s also about style. Sweatpants, joggers, and sporty t-shirts are designed to provide ease of movement while still looking stylish. For a cool and modern look, try pairing graphic tees with color-blocked joggers or a hoodie with denim jeans. The mix of sporty and casual pieces is not only trendy but also gives kids the freedom to play and be active without feeling restricted.

3. Sustainable and Eco-friendly Fashion

Teaching kids the importance of sustainability is essential, and one way to do that is by dressing them in eco-friendly clothing. Many brands now offer clothing made from organic cotton, recycled materials, and eco-conscious dyes. Upcycled fashion, where old clothes are repurposed into new, trendy outfits, is another great way to inspire kids to value sustainability. Eco-friendly fashion is not only good for the planet but also gives children a sense of pride in their wardrobe choices.

4. Classic Denim with a Twist

Denim is a timeless fabric that never goes out of style. For kids, denim jackets, overalls, and jeans are staples that can be styled in a variety of ways. Pairing denim with other materials, like cotton, velvet, or even leather, adds a modern twist to this classic fabric. A denim jacket with patches or embroidered designs can turn a simple piece into something unique. Denim overalls can be worn with t-shirts for a laid-back look or dressed up with accessories for more formal events.

5. Layered Looks for Versatility

Layering is a fun and functional way to add dimension and style to kids’ outfits. Whether it’s a hooded jacket over a t-shirt, a denim vest over a long-sleeve shirt, or cardigans paired with dresses, layering allows kids to adapt their outfits for different weather and occasions. Adding fun scarves, hats, or jewelry as accessories can also bring extra personality to an outfit, creating a more dynamic and creative look.

6. Personalization and Customization

Kids love to wear pieces that reflect their personality. Personalized clothing such as name t-shirts, custom-designed sneakers, or jackets with patches of their favorite characters or hobbies make fashion a fun expression of who they are. These items also become cherished pieces as they carry a personal touch, giving kids a sense of ownership and pride in their outfits.

In Conclusion

Inspirational style ideas for kids go beyond just dressing them in the latest trends. It’s about encouraging self-expression, boosting confidence, and helping children feel good in their clothes. Bold prints, comfortable athleisure, sustainable fashion, classic denim, layered looks, and personalized items all play a role in shaping a child’s unique sense of style. By allowing children to explore different styles, they can develop their creativity, individuality, and confidence, setting the stage for a positive relationship with fashion as they grow.

Supreme Court deliberates on whether to hear Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi’s case

0

Lawyers for Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi were on Wednesday, February 26, prevented from moving a motion to set aside an injunction restraining him from holding himself as a legislator.

A five-member panel led by Justice Gabriel Pwamang questioned whether Kumi had purged himself of contempt before seeking relief from the Supreme Court.

“We are all superior courts, and we are aware that the High Court in Koforidua made orders in the nature of contempt. If you are in contempt, you would purge yourself. You don’t avoid answering it and then you’re given a hearing,” Justice Pwamang stated.

Kumi’s counsel, Gary Nimako Marfo, argued that the High Court had disregarded documents filed by his client and that the Supreme Court motion predated the contempt ruling.

However, Bernard Bediako, counsel for the first interested party, countered that Marfo had already filed another motion seeking to overturn the contempt judgment.

Kumi, who was absent from proceedings, was represented by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

After a brief recess, the court adjourned the matter to March 12 and ordered all parties to file written submissions within seven days.

Supreme Court blocks Koforidua High Court’s sentencing of Ernest Kumi

0

The Supreme Court, in a 4-1 majority decision, has halted the Koforidua High Court from sentencing Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi in a contempt case until a final ruling is made on a motion to overturn the decision.

Justice Gabriel Pwamang dissented, while the remaining four justices on the panel supported the stay.

The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi filed a certiorari and prohibition application at the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn a February 19 contempt of court conviction against him.

Counsel for the MP, Gary Nimako Marfo, argues in the application that Justice Emmanuel Senyo Amadehe of the Koforidua High Court committed “a jurisdictional error of law apparent on the face of the record when he assumed jurisdiction in [the] Parliamentary Election Petition at Akwatia Constituency at the time when the Electoral Commission had not published the Gazette Notification of the results to which the Election relates in the Gazette.”

Justice Senyo Amadehe had convicted Ernest Yaw Kumi for contempt of court and issued a bench warrant for his arrest, citing his defiance of an interim injunction that barred him from being sworn in as a legislator.

Suhuyini proposes use of pension funds to finance infrastructural projects

The Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways-designate, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, has initiated discussions with his proposal for pension funds to be utilised in the construction and financing of road infrastructure projects.

During his appearance before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, Suhuyini suggested that funds, specifically referring to SSNIT, could be redirected towards infrastructure projects.

According to him, pursuing such initiatives would be more beneficial to the state than investing in unprofitable endeavors that impose a burden on it.

“Personally, I think we have to also begin to look at the investment portfolios of some of our pension fund management institutions. For example, the report of SSNIT shows that they invest in luxurious hotels and other assets.

“I wonder if moving forward, some of these funds can now be used to support this very critical infrastructure roads of the country and, just like we are talking about tolling, toll those roads over the years,” he stated.

The Tamale Central lawmaker provided additional examples to strengthen his argument, emphasising that channeling such funds into projects could serve as a valuable investment for the state, with the potential for recouping the expenses.

“For example, if you have an agency supporting the construction of a three-tier dual carriageway from Accra to Kumasi, and have like four tolling stops, for a number of years, that investment can be recouped.

“We all know that pension funds are supposed to have investments for long terms because people who invest in pensions do so for longer terms. So, I think that that conversation should go on and I will be guided by my minister and look at how far the law allows for us to look to those options,” he stated.

Suhuyini was appointed by President John Dramani Mahama to a deputy ministerial role.

Abronye undergoing NIB interrogation – Nana B confirms

0

Abronye is the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP Abronye is the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP

Kwame Baffoe, alias Abronye, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is currently being questioned by officials at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) office at Kawukudi, in Accra, according to Henry Nana Boakye, the NPP’s National Organiser, who is popularly known as Nana B.

In a Facebook update on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, Nana B disclosed that he, along with several party executives, accompanied Abronye to the NIB office earlier in the day, following the invitation extended to him by the NIB.

Abronye, according to Nana B, is engaging with NIB officers and is being supported by his legal team, comprising Agyei Baffour Awuah and Enoch Afoakwa.

“This morning, together with some party executives, we accompanied Kwame Baffoe Abronye, the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) office at Kawukudi.

“Abronye is currently engaging with NIB officers, accompanied by his legal representatives, Lawyer Agyei Baffour Awuah and Lawyer Enoch Afoakwa,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

Nana B emphasised the party’s unwavering support for its members, stating, “The party remains committed to standing by its members at all times.”

The NIB invited Abronye for questioning over some comments he made in a radio interview against President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking on Accra-based Movement TV, Abronye accused President Mahama of withholding GH¢550 million intended for dismissed appointees at the Jubilee House.

“The Akufo-Addo government budgeted GH¢550 million for these individuals to be employed. This money comes from taxpayers, yet another government cancels the appointments and allegedly transfers the funds to the Jubilee House. So, what are you doing with the GH¢550 million that was put in bullion vans and sent to the Jubilee House?

“You have revoked people’s appointments, taken their GH¢550 million, and put it in a bullion van. Meanwhile, Mahama and Okudzeto Ablakwa travel every week and have not spent more than three days in the country,” he claimed.

Following his invitation, Abronye reacted, stating that he cannot be intimidated or silenced through the use of state security agencies.

Speaking on Movement TV, the outspoken politician emphasised that he remains resolute in his position on the matter and is eagerly awaiting the scheduled meeting with the NIB.

“I cannot be intimidated by any state security agency. I am not one of those who run away from accountability. Why? Don’t I have the right to question the president on where he’s keeping that money? Is this the Ghana we are building? These people know that both spiritually and physically, they always lose a fight against me. So, is this the strategy they are resorting to? I will demolish them.

“You, the same President Mahama, when you met the labour unions, stated that state resources were criminally used. Why can’t I also drag you to the NIB for questioning? We were in this country when a party chairman urged supporters of his party to burn DRIP machines, yet the Director of Investigation did not say a word on that issue. I am to appear before the NIB on Wednesday, but if they like, I can go and sleep there on Tuesday night ahead of the meeting,” he said.

He added that “Nobody can threaten me or prevent me from asking relevant questions. Even Donald Trump was questioned after his company had a deal with Elon Musk’s company. When I appear before the NIB, I will use the word ‘hoarding’ in every paragraph. We can’t allow the government to keep that money.”

Government withdraws ENI-Springfield unitisation directive

0

The Afina-1x Well is located at the West Cape Three Points (WCTP) Block 2 offshore The Afina-1x Well is located at the West Cape Three Points (WCTP) Block 2 offshore

The Government of Ghana has withdrawn an earlier directive issued by the erstwhile NPP administration, which mandated a compulsory unitisation between Springfield Exploration and Production Limited (Springfield) and Eni Ghana Exploration and Production Limited (ENI) concerning the Afina-1X Discovery and the Sankofa Cenomanian Oil Field.

The directive, issued in 2020 by the then Ministry of Energy, under the Akufo-Addo administration, has now been officially revoked.

In a letter addressed to the respective parties and signed by the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, the government stated that the decision followed a thorough review of the Arbitral Award-referenced SCC Arbitration U2021/114 (ENI & Vitol v. Ghana & GNPC) dated July 8, 2024, along with the legal opinion provided by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice.

The Tribunal, while acknowledging the potential value of unitisation in principle, identified several procedural flaws in the implementation of the directives, including:

• Absence of a statutory trigger for unitisation: The Tribunal determined that the conditions required under Section 34 of the Petroleum (Exploration and Production) Act, 2016 (Act 919), and Regulation 50 of the Petroleum (Exploration and Production) (General) Regulations, 2018 (L.I. 2359) were not satisfied.

• Arbitrary determination of initial tract participation: The allocation of participation interests was deemed arbitrary and unsupported by sufficient evidence, etc.

The Ministry of Energy on its part acknowledged the Tribunal’s findings that, while the issuance of the directives breached the Petroleum Agreement due to specific circumstances surrounding their implementation, the concept of unitisation itself was not deemed inherently unlawful.

This latest development provides Ghana with the flexibility to determine the most appropriate course of action in the national interest.

“In consequence, and in alignment with the discretionary powers vested in the Minister under Section 34 of Act 919 and Regulation 50 of L.I. 2359, the Ministry hereby withdraws the Unitisation Directives.

“The withdrawal of the directive is without prejudice to the power of the Minister to issue new directives upon subsequent evidence that such a measure is required for the equitable and efficient development of Ghana’s petroleum resources” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana reiterated its commitment to maintaining a conducive environment for investments in the upstream petroleum sector while ensuring compliance with the legal and regulatory framework governing the industry.

“I look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts to advance Ghana’s upstream development goals and strengthen trust with all our partners,” the Minister of Energy concluded.

On July 8, 2024, the International Court of Arbitration ruled that Springfield E&P should do further work to complete the unitisation process.

Following that ruling, and to comply with it, Springfield has worked to secure a rig and all other technical requirements to appraise and conduct a well test on the Afina-1x well.

Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has shown solidarity with his former manager, Jose Mourinho, who is alleged to have made a racial slur against Galatasaray during a fierce derby clash against Fenerbahce.

The top table clash on Monday, February 24, 2025, ultimately ended in a goalless draw, favoring Galatasaray, who maintained their six-point lead at the top of the table with 12 games remaining.

However, the aftermath of the game has caused intense backlash for Mourinho after his post-match comments were deemed a racist remark directed at the club and its players.

The comments prompted Galatasaray to announce their intention to initiate legal proceedings against the former Real Madrid coach. However, Essien has joined several fans and former footballers in defending the former Chelsea boss.

Essien took to social media to post a picture with Mourinho during their time at Chelsea, accompanied by two heart emojis.

Mourinho signed the midfielder for Chelsea in 2005 from French giants Lyon, and the two enjoyed a storied time together, winning multiple trophies, including the Premier League and the FA Cup.

NDC calls for national collaboration to reset Ghana

By Nana Kwame Essel

Twifo Praso (C/R), Feb. 25, GNA – Mr James Prah, the Twifo Atti Morkwa National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Constituency Organiser, has appealed to all Ghanaians to unite and support government’s efforts to reset the country.

He said the President alone could not achieve that goal without the collaboration of all citizens.

Mr Prah made the call when he presented 15 packets of roofing sheets to the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District Education Directorate on behalf of the Member of Parliament for the Area, Mr Theophilus Vondee and the NDC Constituency Chairman, Mr Hakim Addei, who also doubles as Central Region’s representative of the Council of State.

The donation is their contribution towards the rehabilitation of three basic schools affected by a recent rainstorm disaster that ripped of their roofs.

The schools, Praso Methodist A/B Basic School, Praso Sacola Park, and Praso A/D Basic School, were severely damaged, leaving students without a conducive learning environment.

Mr Prah emphasised the need for collective action, urging chiefs, politicians, and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to put aside their differences and help work together to develop the country, particularly the Twifo Atti-Morkwa Constituency.

Mr Benjamin Asare, representing the Twifo Atti District Education Director, Mrs Augustina Atakorah, received the donation and expressed gratitude to the donors.

He also appealed to the Twifo Atti Morkwa District Assembly to provide additional support to complete the roofing of the schools.

The Twifo Atti Morkwa District Coordinating Director, Mr Awah Swahili, for his part, reminded schools to fully participate in the upcoming Green Ghana Day initiative aimed at promoting tree planting in schools to help prevent rainstorm disasters.

The initiative is also to promote sustainable environmental.

Pension funds could be tapped to finance critical road projects

0

Alhassan Suhuyini, Deputy Minister-Designate for Roads and Highways, has proposed leveraging pension funds to finance critical infrastructure projects in Ghana.

Speaking during his vetting before Parliament on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, Suhuyini suggested that long-term pension investments could be redirected to support major infrastructure developments, including roads and highways.

His proposal came amid broader discussions on innovative financing mechanisms for infrastructure development. On Tuesday, February 25, Parliament engaged in a lengthy debate on exploring Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) as an alternative means of funding major government projects, such as road construction.

The Tamale Central MP highlighted the investment strategies of pension management institutions, including the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), which have historically invested in luxury hotels and other high-value assets.

While acknowledging the returns generated from such investments, Suhuyini questioned whether a portion of these funds could be redirected to address the country’s pressing infrastructure challenges.

“Personally, I think we have to also begin to look at the investment portfolios of some of our pension fund management institutions. For example, the report of SNNIT shows that they invest in luxurious hotels and other assets.

“I wonder if moving forward, some of these funds can now be used to support this very critical infrastructure roads of the country and, just like we are talking about tolling, toll those roads over the years.

“For example, if you have an agency supporting the construction of a three-tier dual carriageway from Accra to Kumasi, and have like four tolling stops, for a number of years that investment can be recouped.

“We all know that pension funds are supposed to have investments for long terms because people who invest in pensions do so for longer terms. So, I think that that conversation should go on and I will be guided by my minister and look at how far the law allows for us to look to those options,” he stated.

Many Ghanaian Youth Are Thieves, They Beg for Jobs But Steal From their Employers When Hired – Businessman and Politician Solomon Owusu

0

Ghanaian businessman and politician, Solomon Owusu, has sparked outrage online after claiming many Ghanaian youth are thieves.

According to Owusu, many young people are begging for jobs due to the unemployment crisis yet when they’re hired, they attempt to steal from their bosses and destroy the very business that is paying them.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day program, Owusu said due to these attitudes by young Ghanaians, many private employers find it difficult to expand their businesses and hire more people which also contributes to the unemployment crisis.

Owusu said while many young people are depending on the government to create jobs, it is actually the private sector who can employ most of them. He added that if young people don’t change their attitudes and work ethic, they will continue to remain unemployed because business people will prefer to put their money in the bank or buy government bonds than expand their business and get robbed by their own employees.

The Young Agripreneur Forum on University of Cape-Coast (UCC) campus has held an orientation and onboarding for its new members at the Design Thinking and Innovation Hub (D-Hub) of the university.

YAF is a student-led interactive forum where tertiary students can share and exchange ideas, interests and engage in activities pertaining to agriculture. It provides capacity building and practical skills training for students, invest in changing the mindset and perceptions of young people and position agripreneurship as an exciting career of choice.

An initiative of Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC), YAF is dedicated to empowering young agricultural entrepreneurs.

Also present at the orientation were new and existing members of YAF patrons, namely Dr. Alexander Nuer, Dr. Keren Arthur and the Program Officer (PO) Irene Naa Korkoi Armah, who provided valuable perspectives on agribusiness and youth opportunities in Ghana.

They also encouraged members to actively engage in the agribusiness sector, emphasizing its potential to drive job creation and economic growth.

The event also served as an opportunity to introduce newly elected executive council and provide insights into entrepreneurial prospects in the agricultural value chain in Ghana. The executives shared their vision and commitment to fostering agribusiness development among young people.

New members were given the platform to discuss challenges they perceive in the agricultural sector. Through these discussions, members explored innovative ways to turn these challenges into entrepreneurial ventures.

Key areas identified included post-harvest losses, inadequate market access, and value addition in agribusiness. A dedicated session was held to outline the Forum’s work plan for the semester and the entire year. Members deliberated on various anchor projects to be undertaken, ensuring that the initiatives align with the YAF objectives of promoting youth involvement in agribusiness.

The orientation concluded with a session on sustainability planning. Members discussed strategies to ensure the long-term success and impact of YAF-UCC, focusing on resource mobilization, partnerships, and capacity-building programs.

With the enthusiasm and commitment demonstrated, the forum is well-positioned to make significant contributions to the agribusiness sector and youth employment in Ghana.

YAF is one of the programmes KIC is implementing under its partnership with the Mastercard Foundation on the Initiative for Youth in Agricultural Transformation ( IYAT) Programme.

Prof Kaufmann calls for collaboration to bridge technical skills gap

By Ernest Nutsugah

Accra, Feb 26, GNA – Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, Scientist and Academic, has called for collaborative efforts to bridge Africa’s technical skills gap, advocating for enhanced Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) education.

Speaking at the opening of “The Annual Impact Roundtable Discussion and Robotics Competition” dubbed “AIRTAD 2025,” in Accra, she acknowledged the rapid advancement of technology, and emphasised “a connected response” to the changes.

Prof. Kaufmann, Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences at the University of Ghana, referenced a 2023 World Bank article estimating a need for 2.5 million engineers in Sub-Saharan Africa to tackle development challenges.

She highlighted the current challenges in meeting this demand and stressed the importance of empowering young people to become change makers through STEAM education.

AIRTAD 2025 was to celebrate and evaluate the progress of the “Yamoransa Model Labs Programme,” an initiative dedicated to advancing STEAM education across Africa.

The Model Labs, according to officials, “offerred solar-powered ICT centres equipped with educational content and multimedia, a space for robotics, AR/VR learning, and 3D Printing,” in selected communities.

The facility is funded by the Helping Africa Foundation (HAF), in partnership with the Ministry of Education in countries where the labs are situated.

The two-day conference, organised by Implementers, a non-profit project management organisation, and Helping Africa Foundation, was themed: “The Yamoransa Model Impact Year: Scaling The Successes of Bridging Educational Gaps With Technology.”

Prof. Kaufmann commended both organisations for their effort in empowering underprivileged communities in STEAM education.

“AIRTAD is not just a celebration of speeches or discussion of innovation…I employ you all to see into the great future of STEAM education in Africa…to create solutions that satisfy and sustain humanity.

“The success of the Yamoransa Model Labs is a pathway to showcase innovation and talents on the global stage in order to attract investors and accelerate progress towards Africa’s development,” she noted.

Dr. Deborah Rose, President, Helping Africa Foundation, said the event was to lay the foundation for “further expansion and strategic partnerships” for the Yamoransa Model Lab Programme in sub-Saharan Africa.

“More than a celebration, this event is a rallying call to transform education in Africa- fostering inclusive, technology-driven learning environments that ensure no child is left behind,” she said.

Mr. Kafui Prebbie, Chief Executive Officer, Implementers, said 13 Model Labs had been completed at various locations in Ghana, with two other centres yet to be established.

The technology centres, he explained, included an offline learning tool called “Asanka,” which helped teachers and students to study effectively.

He said the project had impacted over 55,000 pupils in the selected areas, with 100,000 more pupils targeted in the years ahead.

Mr. Prebbie said the organisation would continue to impact communities and support the government’s vision of providing technology education.

Key highlight of AIRTAD 2025 was the robotics competition, where students demonstrated proficiency in coding, engineering, and problem-solving. It also featured projects developed within the Yamoransa Model Labs.

‘Ghana is not a crime scene’ – Richard Ahiagbah tells President Mahama

0

Richard Ahiagbah is Director of Communications of the NPP Richard Ahiagbah is Director of Communications of the NPP

The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama, for implying that the previous government’s handling of Ghana’s economy was a “crime scene,” and accusing the administration of “criminally mismanaging” the country’s economy.

Ahiagbah condemned the [president’s “baseless allegations” and accused him of deliberately making such statements to justify his administration’s persecution of political opponents.

He reminded President Mahama of the previous government’s efforts to implement and sustain various programs, countering his negative assessment of the economy.

“The Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration did not ‘criminally mismanage’ the economy, despite President Mahama’s largely unfounded accusations. On the contrary, it worked tirelessly to build a more resilient and prosperous nation.

“If the economy was a ‘crime scene,’ how did the NPP manage to implement Free SHS, allowing millions of Ghanaian children to access education? How did we establish STEM schools and invest in educational infrastructure to equip the next generation with 21st-century skills?” Ahiagbah stated during the Good Morning Ghana program on Accra-based Metro TV.

He further stated that “Furthermore, the NPP government reinstated the teacher trainee and nursing allowances that President Mahama’s administration had scrapped, ensuring that students in these essential fields received the support they needed to complete their education.”

The NPP executive also explained that the erstwhile NPP government ensured that the economy was running, initiating a lot of new innovations.

“Under the NPP, the economy remained strong enough to sustain major national development programs and ensure the timely payment of public sector salaries, despite global economic challenges.

“These are the hallmarks of a government that prioritized development, innovation, and the well-being of its citizens, not the traits of a mismanaged economy. President Mahama’s attempt to rewrite history cannot erase the real progress Ghanaians made under the NPP,” Ahiagbah asserted.

Fair cocoa pricing can stop illegal farm sales – John Dumelo

0

Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana

Deputy Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo has emphasized the need for fair pricing of cocoa to prevent farmers from selling their lands for illegal mining.

Ghana’s cocoa industry is increasingly under threat from illegal mining, locally referred to as ‘galamsey,’ which has resulted in the destruction of large cocoa farms. It is believed that some cocoa farmers sell their land to illegal small-scale miners, who then convert it into mining sites.

Speaking during his vetting, Dumelo stressed that ensuring cocoa farmers receive competitive prices for their produce would serve as a strong incentive for them to retain and cultivate their farms.

He further highlighted the need for structural reforms in the mining industry to ensure responsible practices that do not negatively impact cocoa farms.

“Giving cocoa farmers the right price will deter them from selling their cocoa farms. The second one is also to restructure or structure the whole mining industry well so that wherever they mine, it wouldn’t be able to affect these cocoa farms. But I think that the main one is about pricing.”

Hearts of Oak are stepping up their preparations for the resumption of the Ghana Premier League with a friendly match against Ghana’s U-20 side, the Black Satellites, at the University of Ghana Stadium, Legon.

Currently fourth in the Ghana Premier League standings, Hearts of Oak are intensifying their efforts as they gear up for the restart.

The 2022 FA Cup champions were eliminated from this year’s FA Cup after a 4-3 defeat to Division One side Golden Kick on Sunday, February 23, 2025.

Suhuyini assures that gov’t will work to fix many roads

0

The Deputy Minister-Designate for Roads and Highways, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, has assured that roads in Tamale and the northern regions will be repaired and completed.

He made this statement during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on February 26, in response to questions about his ministry’s plans to improve roads in his municipality, particularly in Tamale and the North.

Mr Suhuyini disputed claims that the previous government had completed a majority of roads in Tamale, stating that while some roads had been constructed, much more remained unfinished.

“I think it is debatable to say that the previous government did a chunk of the roads in Tamale. They did some roads, and that is not in doubt, like many other governments in the past, but a lot more is left undone,” he stated.

He emphasised that poor road conditions were not unique to the Sagnarigu Municipality, of which Tamale North is a part, but rather a nationwide issue, with several regions still in urgent need of road infrastructure improvements.

“It is a fact that it is not only a problem peculiar to the Sagnarigu Municipality, of which Tamale North is part. It is a fact around the country that almost every part of Ghana still requires a lot of roads,” he added.

Citing briefings from the ministry, he revealed that Ghana currently has about 134,000 kilometres of roads, with approximately 72 per cent remaining unpaved.

“I have the assurance of my Minister, and I have no doubt in his commitment and hard work that we will leverage the needed resources to fix as many of these roads as possible,” he said.

We Can’t Use Brute Force To Stop Galamsey – Lecturer

0

Some participants of the workshop

A lecturer at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in Tarkwa has made it clear that illegal small scale mining activities or ‘galamsey’ cannot be stopped with brute force.

According to Dr. Ishmael Quaicoe, Senior Lecturer and Coordinator, Sustainable Artisanal and Small Scale Mining Hub at UMaT, when brute force is used against the galamseyers, they will fight back.

He said, “About one million Ghanaians are involved in that aspect of mining, and surprisingly they have sophisticated weapons. So when you fight them, they will also fight back.”

He, however, indicated that since those miners also contribute significantly to the country’s economy, the proper thing to do is to train them on responsible and sustainable mining.

The Senior Lecturer was speaking at a Western Regional Development Dialogue organised by the regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association.

It was on the theme “Redefining the Development Agenda: Collaborative Strategies for the Sustainable Growth of the Western Region”.

The programme was attended by representatives of traditional authorities, Members of Parliament, industry players, academia, civil society organisations (CSOs), the clergy, media, and other development actors.

Dr. Quaicoe suggested that water bodies should be protected by allowing the military to patrol on them 24 hours daily, to ward off miscreants who might want to mine in them.

Meanwhile, a communique issued at the close of the programme called for promotion of sustainable resource exploitation to balance economic growth and environmental preservation.

It also called for the prioritisation of climate-resilient infrastructure and spatial development plans to ensure long-term sustainability.

The communique demanded responsible resource exploitation by corporations in the extractive industry to ensure minimal environmental impact.

It stressed the need for investment in alternative transportation modes, such as railways, to ease pressure on roads and ensure affordability.

It also called for the exploration and utilisation of indigenous construction materials to support infrastructure projects and promote local industries.
