He exited the room through the flames – Mawuli Semevo’s brother recounts

0

Philip Okyere, the younger brother of the late veteran actor Mawuli Semevo, who tragically lost his life in a fire incident, has recounted the severity of the fire on that fateful day.

Philip Okyere explained that the fire initially engulfed the hall, while Mawuli Semevo was in the bedroom, unaware of the impending danger.

Continuing with his account, he mentioned that since they were on the top floor, the only escape route was through the door to the hall.

He recalled in an effort to save himself, Mawuli Semevo was forced to rush through the flames.

He said the combination of fear and adrenaline drove the late actor to rush through the fire, leading to severe burns that eventually caused his death.

Philip Okyere shared the full story, saying, “Around 10:30 to 11:00 PM, I was home. I had just returned after filling gas cylinders when the lights went off briefly, then came back on. At one point, I went from the bedroom to check what was happening in the hall. When I went in, the hall was already engulfed in flames.

“I went to turn off the power from the meter, suspecting that the fault might have come from the freezer. Everything was burning. I immediately called for help and contacted the fire service because there was no way we could handle the situation ourselves.

“I tried to open the door to the hall so we could both escape, but I couldn’t get the door open. So, we decided to stay in the bedroom. Uncle Mawuli then left the bedroom to open the door to the hall. He eventually managed to open the door and passed through the flames. It was a mixture of adrenaline and fear that pushed him to go through the fire,” he told GHPage.

Philip also mentioned that at one point, he considered using a rope to escape the building.

“If the fire had reached the bedroom, we wouldn’t have stood a chance. We live on the top floor. For a moment, I thought about using a rope to descend the building rather than go through the flames,” he added.

Burns International, the NGO responsible for caring for the veteran actor prior to his demise, reported that he suffered burns up to 44% of his body, which affected his respiratory organs, making it difficult for him to breathe.

Mawuli Semevo passed away at Ridge Hospital on Thursday, February 20, 2025, while receiving treatment for the injuries sustained in the fire.

The late actor was renowned for his exceptional work in both film and theater.

He starred in notable movies such as A Stab in the Dark, Harvest at 17, Escape of Love, The Good Old Days: The Love of AA, and Like Cotton Twines.

Accra to have first sky train station in August 2020

0

On November 12, 2019, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo signed a concession agreement for the construction of the Accra Sky Train Project.

The signing took place on the sidelines of the African Investment Forum in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Read the full story originally published on November 12, 2019.

The concession agreement for the construction of the Accra Sky Train Project has been signed on the sidelines of the ongoing African Investment Forum in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The signing of the agreement means feasibility studies, spanning a period of nine months to determine the bankability of the project will commence, with the investors assuring that the first station for the Accra Sky Train project will be opened in 9 months.

At the signing ceremony on Monday, November 11, President Akufo-Addo described it as “a happy day for Ghana and her good people”, adding that it is a “critical step towards the consummation of this project”, and a vivid testimony of the value of the African Investment Forum.

The President thanked the SkyTrain Consortium for putting together the wherewithal that is allowing this project to go forward.

The Accra Sky Train, according to him, “is meeting an important infrastructural need, and hopefully the step that is being taken today, that is signing the concession agreement, is bringing the project to much nearer conclusion. That is what we are hoping for so that the people of Ghana benefit from the progress and the relief that a modern system of transport in our capital city is going to bring.”

SkyTrain systems are pre-fabricated using precision moulded, pre-stressed reinforced concrete components that are capable of being installed at a very rapid rate, meaning that there is minimal disruption and congestion in the urban area that is undergoing installation and commissioning.

The proposed SkyTrain initiative in Accra provides for the development of five routes, four of which are comprised of radial routes that originate at the proposed SkyTrain Terminal, at the heart of Accra, at a newly developed Kwame Nkrumah circle, and one (1) route that provides and intra-city commuter loop distribution service, also emanating from Circle.

The project envisages a total track length across all routes of 194 kilometres.

How Ghanaian clubs use ‘Juju’ against referees – Chairman of FA Cup Commitee shares experience

0

Wilson Arthur is the Chairman of the FA Cup Committee Wilson Arthur is the Chairman of the FA Cup Committee

The Chairman of the FA Cup Committee, Wilson Arthur, has disclosed that some Ghanaian clubs resort to using black magic, locally known as ‘juju’, to spiritually influence referees and win games.

The President of Skyy FC narrated an experience where he was told his team had been put under a spell to lose the game and would be thwarted if he left his seat.

Astonishingly, when he left his seat, his team, who were struggling to score, netted a goal a few minutes later, which seemed strange to him.

“For instance, I was asked to leave my seat while watching a match involving my team because I was told they had been put under a spell.

“The moment I left my seat, we scored a goal. Personally, I don’t believe in these things, but there are weird things in football,” he recounted during an interview with Asempa FM.

Arthur noted that his experience has influenced him to believe that some clubs put referees under a spell to win matches.

“The league has many matches, and there is a lot at stake. People must understand that it’s a competition. Ways and means are part of the process to win a match. Referees are always put under a spell. The referees, players, and coaches are worked on spiritually,” he added.

He made these remarks while sharing his thoughts on the shocking results in the 2024/2025 FA Cup, where Ghana Premier League giants Accra Hearts of Oak, Medeama, and Gold Stars were eliminated from the competition.

I was on the verge of going through divorce last year – Bishop Obinim recounts

0

In a candid revelation, Bishop Daniel Obinim, the founder and leader of the International God’s Way Church, has opened up about a tumultuous period in his marriage that nearly led to divorce last year. Speaking to his congregation, Bishop Obinim recounted the challenges he and his wife, Florence Obinim, faced, emphasizing the importance of resilience and commitment in overcoming marital strife.

Bishop Obinim disclosed that he and his wife encountered significant issues that brought their marriage to the verge of dissolution. He admitted that the situation was so dire that he contemplated ending the union. However, through mutual effort and determination, the couple managed to navigate the stormy period and preserve their relationship.

In a show of solidarity, Florence Obinim has consistently expressed her dedication to their marriage. Addressing her own congregation, she highlighted the trials they have endured together, stating, “I’ve endured a lot in my relationship with my husband, Bishop Obinim. We started from scratch, and even when we had very little, I remained faithful. Now that we’ve achieved success, I won’t abandon him.” Her steadfast commitment underscores the depth of their bond and the shared history that fortifies their union.

The Obinims’ marital challenges have not escaped public scrutiny. Various media outlets and social media platforms have buzzed with discussions about the state of their relationship. Despite the external pressures and widespread speculation, the couple has chosen to confront their issues privately, focusing on healing and strengthening their bond away from the public eye.

By sharing their personal struggles, Bishop Obinim aims to impart a message of hope to other couples facing similar challenges. He emphasizes that no marriage is immune to difficulties, but with mutual effort, understanding, and a commitment to growth, partners can overcome even the most daunting obstacles. Their journey serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of addressing issues head-on rather than resorting to separation.

The Obinims’ experience sheds light on the realities of marital life, illustrating that challenges are an inherent part of any relationship. Their decision to work through their differences and emerge stronger offers a valuable lesson in dedication and resilience. As public figures, their openness about personal struggles provides a relatable narrative for many, reinforcing the notion that with love and commitment, couples can navigate the complexities of marriage together.

NEIP ‘Sacks’ Staff –

0

Eric Adjei, NEIP CEO

The Management of National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), has ordered all employees not to report to work starting from today until further notice.

An internal memo to the employees mentions unresolved issues related to their employment, salary payments and some legal matters as reasons for the surprising decision.

The National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme is a flagship policy initiative of the Government of Ghana set up in July 2017.

This initiative offers business development support to entrepreneurs, including training, funding, and mentorship to help businesses scale and become competitive both locally and internationally.

Official figures from the initiative’s website indicates that it has trained over 45,000 entrepreneurs, funded over 9,350 businesses whiles creating over 92,000 jobs since its establishment.

Suspension

But a memo by the management of the entity states that following extensive follow-ups to resolve the issues related to the employment of existing staff, it has been determined that the complexity and legal implications of these issues prevent the entity from using operational funds to pay monthly staff allowances.

It pointed out that management has been instructed to adhere strictly to due process in regularising staff employment matters to prevent further legal complications.

“As a result, effective after the close of work today, all staff are instructed not to report to work starting Monday, 24th February 2025, until these issues are fully resolved,” the memo indicated.

It further stated that once the matters are adequately addressed, management may call upon specific staff whose services will be required to resume work.

The memo, therefore, directed all staff who are in possession of any property belonging to NEIP to hand them over to the Human Resource Officer on or before close of work on Tuesday, February 25, 2025.

“Failure to do so will be considered as deliberate stealing of such items. Your cooperation and understanding in this matter are highly appreciated,” the memo added.

The NEIP’s primary objective is to provide an integrated national support for start-ups and small businesses. NEIP primarily focuses on providing business development services; startup incubators and funding for young businesses to enable them grow and become successful.

The National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme is therefore set within the context of Ghana’s long-term strategic vision of consolidating its middle-income status, building an industry-driven economy capable of providing decent jobs that are suitable and sustainable for development.

NIB Targets NPP Bigwigs: Arrests Ameyaw- Akumfi, Invites Abronye

0

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi and Kwame Baffoe Abronye

It appears the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has intensified its focus on key figures within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), detaining former Education Minister, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, and summoning Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi was taken into custody at the NIB office in Kawukudi, near Nima in the Greater Accra Region.

While the specific reasons for his detention remain undisclosed, NIB officials were said to be actively engaging with him.

At the time of filing this report, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s legal team was at the NIB office to clarify the situation and secure his release, prioritising efforts to obtain bail.

In a related development, the NIB has invited Abronye DC to appear before them on February 26, 2025, regarding allegations he made against President John Dramani Mahama.

He is required to provide evidence supporting his claims that President Mahama is withholding GH¢550 million meant for dismissed appointees at the Jubilee House.

Abronye reportedly made these claims during his appearance on Accra-based Movement Television, where he also accused the government of corruption in recruitment and revocation processes.

These recent actions by the NIB have sparked discussions about the agency’s approach toward prominent NPP members.

Already, Mr. Baffoe has accused the NIB of bias in the discharge of its duties, questioning the basis of the investigation and alleging selective application of the law.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One, Abronye DC stated, “There was money intended for those employees whose appointment letters have been terminated, and no government will recruit for that budgeting. So I’ll go and face them. I haven’t seen the criminal element of that. So they said I should come and assist them in the investigation. So let’s go and then take it from there.”

He further expressed concerns about the motive behind the invitation, suggesting it could be an attempt to stifle free speech.

“Then after that, we can read meaning to their invitation, whether they are trying to reintroduce the culture of silence that everybody spoke against some time ago. I don’t see the criminal element of this issue for NIB to take or invite me to assist them when the current government appointees have made wild allegations, and the Director of NIB hasn’t invited any of them,” he pointed out.

Abronye DC also accused the security agency of selective investigations, pointing to unaddressed allegations involving government officials.

“Wild allegations, serious—that Akyem mafia, we are hoarding gold outside, the MIIF. There are monies that they have stolen. A lot of things. So the director of national investigation did not invite any of them. So we will go and prove to them that they are doing selectivity in their work,” he said.

Clergyman Arrested With GHS 345k Stolen Tithes Found in His Car

0

Residents of the Madina Constituency were shocked when police arrested Rev. Daniel Kwame Boateng, a prominent clergyman, for allegedly stealing GHS 345,000 in church tithes. The arrest took place on Sunday evening during a routine traffic check after Boateng, who leads Holy Fire Ministries International, left a church service in haste.

A concerned church member, who noticed suspicious behavior from Boateng, alerted the authorities. “I’ve seen him acting strangely after services, so today I decided to notify the police,” the member, who wished to remain anonymous, said.

When officers searched his Toyota Land Cruiser, they discovered large amounts of money hidden in envelopes and bags under the seats and in the trunk. Boateng claimed the money was for church projects, but church leaders denied any knowledge of it.

The church’s senior pastors and elders were devastated by the news. Elder Esther Addo expressed her heartbreak, saying, “We trusted him. We never imagined he could steal from the Lord’s house.”

One church official revealed that the stolen funds were intended for charity work, including aiding the poor and funding a new church building. “We feel betrayed. Our members give their tithes with faith, and now this,” he added.

DSP Kofi Mensah, the police officer in charge, confirmed that Rev. Boateng is in custody and under investigation. “We found GHS 345,000 in his car, and he couldn’t explain its origin. This is being treated as a theft case, and he will be brought to court soon,” Mensah said.

The arrest quickly went viral on social media, with many expressing disappointment. Resident Kwame Asiedu remarked, “Pastors should set an example. This is shameful!” Others have called for an audit of church finances to prevent such incidents in the future.

Mahama has failed to meet 30% women representation in his government – PNP

0

The People’s National Party (PNP) has criticised President John Mahama for failing to uphold his promise of ensuring 30% representation of women in his government.

Janet Asana Nabla, the founder and 2024 flagbearer of the party, has petitioned religious leaders across the country to urge the president to comply with the law and increase female representation in his administration.

In the petition issued on Monday, 24th February, Asana Nabla highlighted that Article 17(4) of Ghana’s Constitution mandates Parliament to enact laws addressing imbalances in representation.

In response to the persistent under-representation of women in politics and governance, Parliament passed the Affirmative Action Act on 30 July 2024. This law requires all governments to ensure at least 30% representation of women in key appointments, including ministerial, deputy ministerial, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) positions, cabinet ministers, Managing Directors and CEOs, Board Chairpersons, ambassadors, and other vital roles.

Asana Nabla pointed out that, under President Mahama’s administration, only 16% of ministers, 14% of deputy ministers, and 10% of cabinet ministers are women.

She condemned this as a “blatant disregard for gender equality and the law,” and called for it to be rectified.

The PNP has urged religious bodies to take a stand in defending the rights of women, stating that religious bodies have historically been strong advocates for justice and the protection of the vulnerable.

The party further called on President Mahama to honour the Constitution and his campaign promise by immediately reconstituting his cabinet and ensuring all future appointments meet the legally mandated 30% representation for women.

The PNP stressed that this issue goes beyond politics, as it is also a moral, legal, and religious responsibility to address gender inequality.

‘Stop the complaints, prove you’re an international artiste’ – Blakk Rasta to Stonebwoy

0

Blakk Rasta and Stonebwoy Blakk Rasta and Stonebwoy

Ghanaian reggae musician and media personality, Blakk Rasta, has urged Stonebwoy to put an end to what he described as the unhealthy controversy with some popular event organizers ahead of his album tour in the UK.

In a discussion on United Showbiz on February 22, 2025, Blakk Rasta urged Stonebwoy to prove that he is an international artiste who doesn’t need the support of successful event organizers like Akwaaba UK to have a successful concert.

He emphasized that Stonebwoy should simply focus on his craft and stop seeking sympathy or making unnecessary claims that he is being sabotaged.

“How is Akwaaba UK sabotaging Stonebwoy? In business, there is nothing like sympathy because I am doing what is going to give me the power. So, if I were Stonebwoy right now, I would tell him to stop these unnecessary talks that someone is sabotaging him.

“He should show them he is an international artiste. How has he branded himself to the point that he doesn’t need the Ghanaian market for people to come?” he said.

Blakk Rasta further tasked Stonebwoy to improve his craft, adding that he has reached a point in his career where he cannot afford to relax.

“I think he has reached a certain point in his career whereby he needs to up his game and not feel relaxed. If he is to base the numbers, he gets in Ghana to determine how the event in the UK would be, he is making a mistake because Ghanaians are parochial when it comes to events…

He should go out there and prove his worth. He should come up and spend money on his brand. Lose but get the brand solid… If you look at his backing vocalists, it is like they are playing. Ghanaian arts must raise the bar. We have to brand ourselves to the point where we would be considered as international artistes,” he added.

Blakk Rasta’s comments are in response to a recent back-and-forth between Stonebwoy’s manager, Chief Stylz, and the CEO of Akwaaba UK, Dennis Tawiah, over the clash of dates for their upcoming events in the UK.

Did Mahama’s government ‘copy’ Dr. Bawumia’s School Sports Secretariat plan?

0

Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia annouced the plan back in February 2024 Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia annouced the plan back in February 2024

In February 2024, during a major policy address in Accra, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, then the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, unveiled a comprehensive sports development agenda.

Central to this agenda was the proposal to establish the Ghana School Sports Secretariat, a statutory authority under the Ministry of Sports.

This initiative aimed to drive grassroots sports development through schools, in collaboration with stakeholders such as the Ghana Education Service (GES) and various sports federations.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized this commitment by incorporating it into the NPP’s 2024 Manifesto, launched in Takoradi in August 2024.

He stated, “We will establish the Ghana School Sports Secretariat, which will operate as an agency under the Ministry of Sports, in partnership with other stakeholders such as the Ghana Education Service (GES) and sports federations.”

However, in a recent development, the current administration, led by President John Dramani Mahama, has announced a similar initiative.

At the launch of the maiden Amateur Boxing League on Friday, February 21, 2025, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, revealed plans to establish a government agency dedicated to school sports development.

This announcement has raised eyebrows, especially since the establishment of such an agency was not part of the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) 2024 Manifesto.

The overlap between Dr. Bawumia’s earlier proposal and the current administration’s plans has sparked discussions about the originality and ownership of the idea.

Critics argue that the Mahama administration has adopted a key component of the NPP’s sports development strategy without acknowledgment.

Supporters, on the other hand, contend that the initiative’s implementation, regardless of its origin, will benefit the nation’s sports landscape.

This situation highlights the dynamic nature of policy development in Ghanaian politics, where ideas can transcend party lines, leading to debates about intellectual property and the best interests of national progress.

Ronaldo picks Messi over himself

Brazilian football legend Luis Nazário Ronaldo has named Argentine icon Lionel Messi a better player than himself.

Ronaldo took part in a “this or that” challenge, where he ranked himself above many other great players—except Messi.

In the video, the highly-rated former striker confidently named himself as a better player than Real Madrid and Portugal legend Cristiano Ronaldo. However, when asked to choose between himself and Messi, he took a brief pause before picking the Argentine.

Throughout previous interviews, Ronaldo has consistently referred to Messi as the greatest player of all time.

In an interview with GOAL, he notably omitted Cristiano Ronaldo from his list of top attackers, which featured himself, Messi, Ronaldinho, Diego Maradona, and Pelé.

However, he did acknowledge Cristiano’s legendary status, naming him among the greatest players of all time alongside Maradona, Messi, and Pelé.

Progress Made, But Challenges Remain

The wife of popular broadcast journalist Kofi Adomah has shared an update on his health, revealing that while some successful medical procedures have been performed on his eyes in Dubai, the journey to full recovery is far from over.

Kofi Adomah, the operator of Kofi TV, was shot in the face while covering a festival in Dormaa last December, prompting his family to seek advanced medical treatment abroad.

In a heartfelt social media post, Mrs. Adomah expressed gratitude for the progress made so far but emphasized that more work is needed to save her husband’s eyesight. “Regarding my husband’s surgery, I would like to confirm that some successful procedures have been performed in Dubai. However, we are not out of the woods yet, so we ask for your continued prayers,” she wrote.

She also addressed rumors suggesting that Dr. Kwaku Oteng, CEO of the Angel Group, had not been supportive during this difficult time. Mrs. Adomah firmly debunked these claims, stating that Dr. Oteng has been a pillar of strength and assistance since the incident occurred. “Dr. Kwaku Oteng has been of immense support to us, and we are deeply grateful for his kindness,” she added.

The family’s decision to fly Kofi Adomah to Dubai was driven by the need to access the best possible medical care. However, the mounting costs of treatment have necessitated additional support. A GoFundMe account was recently set up to help cover the escalating medical expenses, as the family continues to navigate this challenging period.

Kofi Adomah’s ordeal has drawn widespread sympathy and support from Ghanaians and well-wishers worldwide. Many have rallied behind the journalist, offering prayers and financial contributions to aid his recovery. As the family remains hopeful for a positive outcome, they continue to lean on the generosity and solidarity of the public to help them through this trying time.

The road to recovery may still be long, but with ongoing medical efforts and the unwavering support of loved ones and the community, there is hope that Kofi Adomah will overcome this challenge and regain his health.

NDC has worse problems, but they will not go on Radio to attack their party leaders

0

According to GhanaWeb, the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has sharply criticized Oman FM, a radio station known for its support of the party.

His remarks came after a discussion on the station about the troubled Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, who is facing a bench warrant for his arrest issued by the Koforidua High Court due to a contempt of court conviction.

This conviction arose when Kumi proceeded with his swearing-in as an MP despite a court order against it.

The morning show on the station scrutinized the party’s national leadership and its parliamentary caucus regarding their handling of this situation.

However, Afenyo-Markin was displeased with the public nature of the discussion and called into the station to voice his concerns.

He pointed out that while the party may have internal challenges, public forums are not suitable for addressing such significant matters.

He remarked on his surprise at the nature of the conversation, indicating that although parties encounter issues, they typically resolve them internally.

”…The party may have problems, I understand. Every party has its own issues that it resolves from time to time. The NDC has worse situations, but they will not go on Radio Gold, Montie FM, and others to attack their party leaders and party decisions or insinuate. They won’t do it. We can talk about our problems in-house,” he told the host, Yaw Amofa Boakye.

He contrasted this with the approach of the NDC, which, according to him, does not publicly criticize its leaders on similar platforms.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized the need for unity and managing disappointment within the party, expressing his distress over the negative portrayal of their own party in relation to Kumi’s case.

Mahama’s 1st cabinet meeting prioritised persecution of political opponents – Minority alleges

0

The minority caucus in Parliament has accused the Mahama government of deliberately plotting to use state institutions to persecute opponents of the NPP and the previous government.

In a strongly worded statement, the minority caucus accused the government of prioritising and discussing how to persecute political opponents at its first cabinet meeting last week, adding that the swiftness with which activists of the NPP are being persecuted, is a result of the cabinet meeting.

“We are reliably informed that at President Mahama’s first Cabinet meeting, discussions were heavily centered on officials of the previous administration.”

“It is no coincidence that shortly after this meeting, the security agencies sprang into action, conducting aggressive and unlawful interrogations, forcefully inviting former appointees to the NIB, and instilling fear in political opponents,” the statement said.

“These actions are not about accountability—they are about political vengeance, designed to divert attention from the government’s failure to immediately roll out the very policies it promised Ghanaians and rather incite national anger against past government appointees.”

While acknowledging the ”importance of accountability” in governance,, the statement added that ”the pursuit of justice must adhere to due process and the rule of law.”

‘The recent trend of forcibly detaining individuals without proper legal procedures is reminiscent of authoritarian regimes and has no place in our democratic society.”

“We remind the government that it has a four-year mandate to fulfill its promises to the Ghanaian people. This period should be dedicated to fostering development, ensuring peace, and upholding stability, rather than engaging in political witch hunts.”

The minority caucus added that it will stand resolute and defend the democratic rights of all Ghanaians.

“If the Mahama administration is confident in its governance abilities, it must focus on delivering on its mandate, not on waging a politically-motivated witch-hunt. Ghana’s democracy must not be reduced to a regime of political vendettas and abuse of power. Our nation’s progress depends on unity, respect for the rule of law, and a collective commitment to the welfare of our citizens.”

Prampram, Shai Resolve Boundary Dispute

0

Nene Ayiku Obleh Adebontenya IV

After one year of negotiations to resolve a dispute over the rightful ownership of thousands of acres of land on a boundary between Prampram and Shai Traditional Areas, an amicable resolution has been found.

The resolution followed a demarcation exercise conducted by the Lands Commission with support from the various family heads and clans from both traditional areas.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, February 22, 2025, in Prampram, to officially communicate the outcome of the resolution to the public, Evans T. N. Nartey, Administrator of the Prampram Customary Lands Secretariat, said individuals or groups who bought lands prior to the demarcation should not worry about losing their lands.

“Anyone who may have bought lands on and around the boundary stretch from the Shai Traditional Area and have unfortunately been affected by the demarcation exercise, do not panic. Be assured that the land-owning divisions, clans’ families and individuals have put in the necessary measures to address the situation through the Prampram Customary Land Secretariat,” he said.

In the past, dispute over the rightful ownership of the land has led to violent clashes, leading to arrest of persons from both sides. Officials relied on a land document developed in the 1900s, the Jackson Report, to help bring clarity to the exact areas the two traditional areas occupy, and which of the families or clans owns what within their own boundaries.

Mr. Nartey also said the establishment of the Prampram Customary Land Secretariat was equally key to the resolution of the dispute, because it helped the four divisions within Prampram to negotiate a resolution from a single source.

“All land-owning divisions, clans, families and individuals, the outfit derives its operational mandate from the Lands Act 2020 (Act1036) under the supervision of the Office of the Administrator of Stool Lands,” he added.

Nene Ayiku Obleh Adebontenya IV, Divisional Chief of Kley and President of the Prampram Customary Land Secretariat, who also provided insights into the resolution, expressed satisfaction about the outcome. He said the issues that fuelled the dispute and the violent clashes are now behind the two traditional areas.

Nene Adebontenya IV said the customary land secretariat will continue to execute the effective management of lands in the traditional area, provide transparency and clarity, as well as assured the public of the safety of their purchased lands.

Present at the press conference were family heads from Olowe, Kley, Annor We and Lakpleh.

Mahama’s comeback, an economic reset and what lies ahead – Nii Larte Lartey writes

0

John Dramani Mahama made a historic return to the presidency, but his promise to reset the Ghanaian economy to fix the shortcomings of the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government carries high stakes. The journey ahead demands tough choices.

Tough choices that must balance social relief with fiscal discipline in the midst of mounting pressure to deliver on the numerous promises made to the electorate. But the country’s economy has been battered both on the domestic and international fronts, the worst of it being a total shut-out from the international capital market.

Fixing this will require urgent recalibration , but can Mahama 2.0 lead Ghana out of its current economic quagmire?

John Mahama’s victory, just like that of his predecessor President Nana Akufo-Addo, was won on the back of ambitious policies targeted at stimulating job creation, economic growth, and industrialisation. While Akufo-Addo promised one-district-one-factory, Mahama has promised the 24-hour economy. For policies like the Year of Roads, One-District-One-Dam, and Agenda 111, which promised massive infrastructural investment in the erstwhile government, Mahama has proposed the Big Push, and so on.

In spite of all the grand promises, the past administration was marked by prolonged currency volatility, rising inflation, high cost of living, stifled private sector growth, and unsustainable debt levels. Worse still, external shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic and global commodity price fluctuations exposed structural weaknesses in the economy, forcing a $3 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout.

Even as Mahama assembles his team to deliver on his promises, many of the issues that got the erstwhile NPP government booted out still linger and could threaten the success of his reset agenda.

Aware of this reality, President Mahama’s first major move is a national economic dialogue for stakeholder engagement to unpick the challenges and align public needs with government policies.

At a period when public debt sits at more than 70% to GDP, nothing could be timelier. A dialogue is a good start. After the talk comes the inevitable heavy lifting. Debt servicing, including the double whammy of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) and External Debt Restructuring alone, currently accounts for nearly half of government’s annual revenue. Consequently, the country’s debt stock remains profoundly unsustainable.

Mahama’s first budget to be presented in March is not only a critical test of his policy intentions but also an economic balancing act of improving domestic revenue while yet, removing unpopular taxes such as the E-Levy, Betting tax and COVID-19 Levy. With an apparent potential loss in revenue, it waits to be seen whether the government’s ‘priority of priorities’ – easing the burden on consumers and businesses – will deliver the needed growth to justify the act itself.

This is especially because there isn’t until now, any clear direction of alternatives to fill the multi-billion-cedi hole expected to be created by the scrapping of these tax handles.

Without sustained revenue, the huge energy sector debt, for example, can not be cleared, and the cycle of poor program implementation and infrastructure implementation will continue. As finance minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson eyes raising tax revenue-to-GDP ratio from 13.8% to 16%,he faces a big question of how and the maiden budget should answer this.

Mahama’s handling of the local currency will be important. Investors, businesses, and ordinary citizens alike are keen to see clear plans and actions that will stabilise the cedi’s performance against other major trading currencies. Whether through foreign direct investment, strategic commodity exports, and regulation through its Gold Board initiative, for example, or even building strong buffers with the reserves at the Bank of Ghana, nothing should be off the table.

In the midst of all these, there is growing uncertainty about the future of the current IMF programme as President Mahama and his finance minister Dr. Ato Forson contradict each other on whether the programme may be extended or not. With or without an extension, there is a strong appetite to review the programme. This may mean flexibility in fiscal targets to allow for more growth-oriented spending. Care is to be taken so as to not vitiate the resurging investor confidence brought by the change of government, however small that confidence is.

For many Ghanaians, Mahama and the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) return is a good sign for the economy. The oversubscription in treasury bills and the massive rejections in some of the bids may well be a foretelling of what the reset agenda may bring. But such is the goodwill that comes with new governments and Mr Mahama must learn from errors of the one-time shining economic star of Africa called Ghana – which was the world’s fastest growing economy in 2019 – and be prudent.

Yes, Ghana’s economy needs a reset to deliver an improved standard of living and prosperity for all. But Mr Mahama’s true test lies ahead – Can he turn the promise of a reset into a sustainable economic rebound for Ghana? Only time will tell. In the meantime, I wish the government well.

Government Surpasses T-Bill Target as Investor Confidence Soars

0

T BillsT Bills
Treasury bills

The government has once again exceeded its Treasury bill (T-bill) borrowing target, underscoring strong investor confidence in Ghana’s money market.

According to the latest auction results from the Bank of Ghana, the government secured GHS 9.6 billion in bids last week, far surpassing its initial target of GHS 7.73 billion by 165%. Despite receiving bids exceeding GHS 10 billion, authorities capped the accepted amount at GHS 9.6 billion, reflecting a cautious approach to managing debt levels.

Breaking down the figures, the 91-day T-bill attracted bids worth GHS 7.38 billion, with GHS 4.23 billion accepted. Similarly, the 182-day bill saw bids totaling GHS 5 billion, of which GHS 1.43 billion was accepted. The 364-day bill also recorded significant interest, with bids reaching GHS 8.11 billion and GHS 3.96 billion accepted.

Despite the oversubscription, yields on short-term government securities declined, signaling a shift in market dynamics. The 91-day T-bill rate dropped to 24.47%, down from 26.85%, while the 182-day bill rate fell to 25.38% from 27.80%. The 364-day bill rate also decreased to 27.29% from 29.07%. These declines reflect a combination of improved investor confidence and adjustments to evolving market conditions.

Looking ahead, the government plans to raise an additional GHS 6.49 billion in debt on Friday, February 28, 2025. Market analysts expect investor interest to remain robust, even as yields continue to adjust. The strong demand for T-bills highlights the attractiveness of government securities as a safe investment option, particularly in an uncertain economic climate.

This trend also suggests that investors remain optimistic about Ghana’s economic prospects, despite recent challenges. The government’s ability to consistently exceed its borrowing targets demonstrates its access to liquidity and its capacity to meet financing needs. However, the decline in yields raises questions about the long-term sustainability of such high demand, especially as market conditions evolve.

As the government prepares for its next auction, all eyes will be on whether investor confidence remains steady and how yields respond to ongoing economic developments. For now, the strong performance of T-bills underscores the resilience of Ghana’s financial markets and the continued trust investors place in government securities.

Ashanti Region’s ‘silent protest’ against neglect highlighted

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has long relied on the Ashanti Region as its electoral stronghold, but the 2024 elections told a different story.

A special committee report investigating the party’s historic defeat which MyNewsGh has sighted revealed that voter discontent in Ashanti was a major factor, with party supporters feeling ignored and sidelined.

Despite the government’s massive infrastructural projects, such as the Prempeh I International Airport, multiple hospital projects under Agenda 111, and major road developments, these efforts did not translate into votes.

The report found that 88% of respondents acknowledged these achievements, but 84% admitted they were either rushed or poorly communicated, making them seem like last-minute attempts to win votes.

“Some of these projects were commissioned just a week before the elections. It felt like an afterthought,” one respondent noted.

Beyond the timing of projects, the Ashanti Region felt neglected compared to other areas.

87% of respondents pointed to an imbalance in development, arguing that Greater Accra and the Eastern Region received more attention.

“Five interchanges were built in Accra and Tamale, yet the Suame Interchange, promised years ago, is barely 5% complete,” a frustrated party loyalist stated.

Additionally, key projects in Kumasi, such as the Kumasi Central Market Phase 2, Krofrom Market, Boankra Inland Port, and the Komfo Anokye Maternity Block, remained unfinished.

‘It’s racially motivated; no white person has faced a similar prosecution’

0

Sean Combs, popularly known as P. Diddy or Puff Daddy Sean Combs, popularly known as P. Diddy or Puff Daddy

Sean “Diddy” Combs‘ legal team has filed a motion seeking the dismissal of one of the federal charges against him, arguing that the case is racially biased.

They contend that “no white person has ever been the target of a remotely similar prosecution” under the Mann Act.

In a memorandum filed Tuesday evening, Combs’ attorneys asserted that there has “never been a similar RICO prosecution” and that he is being “singled out because he is a powerful Black man, prosecuted for conduct that regularly goes unpunished.”

The motion specifically challenges Count Three of his S1 Indictment, which alleges that from 2009 to 2024, Combs engaged in transporting individuals for prostitution.

His legal team argues that the charge is based on consensual encounters involving his girlfriends and male escorts hired through a legal service.

“Many couples, including wealthy, high-profile individuals, involve third parties in their sexual relationships, sometimes with implicit or explicit remuneration,” the filing states. It highlights that white public figures, such as former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, have engaged in similar behavior without facing Mann Act charges. “Such conduct has never previously triggered Mann Act liability.”

Combs’ attorneys argue that the charge exemplifies selective prosecution, citing the Mann Act’s history of being used disproportionately against Black men. Also known as the White Slave Traffic Act, the law has been criticized for its racialized enforcement.

“This prosecution is yet another instance where [the Mann Act] has been invidiously deployed against a prominent Black man,” the memorandum states.

Combs remains in custody in Brooklyn ahead of his May trial. He faces charges of racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion, and transportation for the purpose of prostitution.

Meanwhile, a woman who had previously accused Combs and Jay-Z of raping her when she was 13 recently dropped her lawsuit. However, multiple lawsuits against the Bad Boy Records founder are still ongoing.

GETFund Administrator advocates private sector-led school infrastructure development

Paul Adjei, Administrator of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) Paul Adjei, Administrator of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund)

The Administrator of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), Paul Adjei, has called for innovative and diversified funding sources to address Ghana’s school infrastructure needs across all educational levels.

Speaking at the National Education Forum in Ho, Volta Region, Adjei emphasized that the nation’s heavy reliance on GETFund as the primary funding source is unsustainable.

He urged stakeholders to explore alternative financing models, including private sector investments, community-driven initiatives, diaspora contributions, endowment funds, philanthropic foundations, and development partnerships to support the construction, maintenance, and management of educational facilities.

Delivering a paper on “Government and Stakeholder Partnerships in School Infrastructure Development in Ghana” during one of the forum’s five breakout sessions, Adjei highlighted the need for cost-effective and time-efficient solutions, such as high-quality prefabricated materials, in school construction projects.

He noted that “these materials could significantly reduce costs and expedite project delivery.”

The discussion also underscored the importance of fostering community ownership and involvement in school facility management and maintenance.

Additionally, participants advocated for a phased approach to large-scale infrastructure projects especially at the tertiary level to enable partial use of facilities before full completion.

The forum, themed “Transforming Education for a Sustainable Future,” was officially launched earlier that day by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama at the Volta Serene Hotel.

The President encouraged all Ghanaians to actively participate in shaping a comprehensive blueprint for education development.

The infrastructure breakout session was chaired by Prof. Samuel Attintono, Principal of Accra College of Education, with distinguished educationists Prof. Mohammed Salifu and Mr. Kwame Azu moderating the discussions.

Former GIIF Board Chair was detained over $2 million Accra Sky Train scandal

0

Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, Former Board Chairman of GIIF Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, Former Board Chairman of GIIF

The Former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, was detained by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) on Sunday, February 23, 2025, over his alleged involvement in the failed $3 billion Accra Sky Train project.

According to a 3News report citing sources with knowledge of the matter, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi was taken into custody on the morning of Sunday, February 23, 2025, for allegedly authorizing the release of $2 million to Africa Investor Holdings, the company behind the project.

The report mentioned that the payment was made before feasibility studies were conducted and remains unaccounted for, with no refunds made to the state.

The Accra Sky Train project was first announced by then-President Nana Akufo-Addo as a game-changer in Ghana’s urban transportation landscape.

However, the $3 billion initiative soon faced serious scrutiny due to financial mismanagement and a lack of due diligence.

In July 2023, the Minority in Parliament demanded explanations regarding the $2 million payment to Africa Investor Holdings.

Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Governs Kwame Agbodza, speaking to the media, questioned the legitimacy of the transaction, stating, “The Government of Ghana facilitated an investor from South Africa to establish a Special Purpose Vehicle in Mauritius. Before even conducting feasibility studies, $2 million was transferred to this entity. Who approved this payment?”

Meanwhile, a 2021 Auditor-General’s report later classified the investment as a net liability, indicating that the funds were effectively lost.

Furthermore, the Ai Sky Train Consortium Holdings, the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) created for the project, lacked the necessary operational licenses to execute the initiative.

Akuffo and her fellow members were officially sworn in by President John Dramani Mahama on February 19.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based TV3 on Sunday, February 23, she reflected on her extensive career and leadership roles, expressing confidence in her ability to contribute meaningfully to national governance.

“I think I am bringing on a lot of wisdom and a lot of experience. Sometimes, when people see my very detailed CV, they are kind of surprised that it looks like I have done everything. I have been in management, I have been in corporate life, I have been in private corporate life, I have been a private legal practitioner,” she stated.

Her legal career spans decades, during which she played a pivotal role in shaping Ghana’s judiciary.

She served as Chief Justice from 2017 to 2019, overseeing significant judicial reforms aimed at enhancing efficiency and integrity within the legal system.

Beyond her judicial work, Akuffo has also contributed to legal education and corporate governance.

“Even as a judge, I was very much involved in judicial education and so many different things, varied things, all of which one can bring to bear in whatever area of life one finds oneself involved in,” she noted.

Her tenure as Chief Justice was marked by efforts to modernise court processes, advocate for improvements in legal education, and champion judicial independence.

Before assuming the role of Chief Justice, she served on Ghana’s Supreme Court for over two decades, adjudicating landmark cases that shaped the country’s legal landscape.
