The John Wesley Methodist Basic School on Wednesday held its second edition of the Pre-6th March Parade to commemorate Ghana’s 68th Independence Anniversary under the theme: “Reflect, Review, and Reset.”

The event emphasized the importance of resetting priorities and embracing technology, creativity, and moral uprightness as pillars for national development.

Mrs. Christiana Amoba Adjei, Greater Accra Regional Manager of the Methodist Education Unit, underscored the significant role young minds play in shaping the future of Ghana.

She said young learners must embrace technology, creativity, and moral integrity as essential components for the country’s progress. She emphasized that parents, teachers, and other stakeholders must instill values such as honesty, diligence, and service in children to guide them in contributing positively to the nation.

Mrs. Adjei noted that the theme of the celebration called for a reflective look at the past, a review of current progress, and a renewed commitment to building a stronger and more prosperous Ghana.

She stressed that the vision of Ghana’s founding fathers was built on unity, self-determination, and progress, and these principles must continue to guide the country.

The Regional Manager urged the nation to reflect on whether the current trajectory, especially in the education sector, aligns with the principles that ensure a thriving and sustainable future.

She called on parents and educators to reset their approach and focus on creating an environment that supports and fosters creativity and innovation, enabling learners to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to succeed in life.

Addressing the learners, Mrs. Adjei encouraged them to actively participate in their studies, engage with teachers and peers, and embrace innovation and creativity.

She reminded them that they are both today’s and tomorrow’s leaders, and their dedication to learning and growth is key to building a successful future for themselves and the nation.

The Regional Director also urged teachers to renew their commitment to excellence, ensuring that the core values of the Methodist School—excellence and service—are upheld as they continue to shape the minds of the next generation.

“This event serves not only as a celebration of Ghana’s independence but also as a call to action for all to reflect, review, and reset their roles in fostering a brighter future for the nation,” she said.

Mrs. Dora N. D. Dodoo, Headmistress of John Wesley Methodist Basic School, expressed gratitude to God for ushering the school into the new year and highlighted the importance of the event.

She said the celebration was not just about learning but also about fostering a sense of patriotism among learners through activities such as marching, parades, cultural performances, and various events.

Mrs. Dodoo advised learners to take full advantage of the opportunities presented to them during such events and encouraged them to consider pursuing future careers in various fields while maintaining a patriotic spirit.

“You have a responsibility to honor the sacrifices made by those who fought for Ghana’s freedom, and you must contribute to the nation’s progress and raise the flag of Ghana high,” she said.

The Headmistress also expressed appreciation to parents for their support and urged them to continue instilling a spirit of patriotism and engagement in their children, just as Ghana’s forefathers fought for the country’s independence.

Ghana international, Ibrahim Osman will miss Feyenoord’s second leg clash against Inter Milan in the Uefa Champions League next week.

This is due to yellow card accumulation after receiving a booking in the first leg meeting on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

Inter Milan took control of the first-leg tie with a dominant performance on Wednesday evening but had to wait for the breakthrough, which came in the 38th minute.

France forward Marcus Thuram opened the scoring after expertly converting a precise cross from Nicolo Barella.

Later in the second half, Lautaro Martinez doubled the lead for the visitors, finishing off a well-timed pass from Piotr Zielinski in the 50th minute.

Ibrahim Osman was booked in the 76th minute, leading to an accumulation of yellow cards in the competition, which seals his suspension for the return leg. Feyenoord will now have to prepare for the second leg knowing that the talented Ghana winger will be unavailable.

It will be a big blow for the Dutch side in a game where the team trails 2-0 from the first leg.

We did our best, but challenges persist – Baafi Okyere on 1D1F

Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi

Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Hon. Michael Okyere Baafi, has admitted that while the One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative was a major step towards economic transformation, it has yet to achieve its full objectives.

Speaking on GHOne TV, as monitored by MyNewsGh, he acknowledged that the government has made great strides in reducing import dependence and boosting local production, but certain challenges have hindered complete success.

“No government in Ghana’s history has ever introduced such an ambitious policy to create factories and businesses as we did. Our goal was to reduce importation and focus on developing our industries locally,” he explained.

However, he noted that the financial muscle needed to set up and sustain these businesses was a challenge.

“The government alone does not have the capacity to establish and run businesses. That is why 1D1F was structured as a private-sector-led initiative. Businesspeople were encouraged to invest, but we faced issues that made full implementation difficult,” he said.

On food production, he pointed out that despite efforts to curb smuggling and ensure food security, some products, like cashew and cereals, continued to leave the country illegally.

“We introduced policies to ban the export of some products so they could be sold locally, but people still smuggled them out. Even with border security reinforcement, we couldn’t fully control the situation,” he admitted.

Despite these setbacks, he remains optimistic that the next phase of implementation will yield better results.

“We have laid a strong foundation. This government will continue the work to achieve our full objectives,” he concluded.

Ghanaian forward Noah Baffoe was on target for Eastern AA on Wednesday March 5, 2025, when the team defeated Southern District 2-1 in the Hong Kong Premier League.

The experienced attacker started for his side in the Round 9 encounter played at Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground.

Despite the dominance of his team in the first half, they could not find the breakthrough.

However, five minutes into the second half, Noah Baffoe equalised to shoot Eastern AA into a deserved lead with an amazing strike.

His goal inspired the hosts to take control of the match, leading to a second goal in the 74th minute.

This time around, it was veteran Serbian attacker Alexandar Mitrovic who found the back of the net.

The only consolation for the Southern District was scored by Gregory.

After his goal on Wednesday, Noah Baffoe now has scored 11 goals after making 15 appearances in the 2024/25 Hong Kong Premier League.

Nigeria’s senate president denies sexually harassing colleague

0

One of Nigeria’s most senior politicians, Godswill Akpabio, has denied allegations of sexual harassment brought against him by a fellow senator.

Senate President Akpabio told Wednesday’s session that he had been raised very well by his late mother and had never harassed any woman.

In an interview with Arise Television on Friday, senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that Akpabio had made inappropriate advances towards her during a visit to his residence in southern Akwa Ibom state, on 8 December 2023.

She said that Akpabio had taken her by the hand, led her around his house, and made sexual advances towards her while her husband walked behind them, talking on his phone.

She further alleged that Akpabio had, on a separate occasion, insinuated that she should “take care of him” if she wanted her motions to receive favourable consideration in the senate.

The senator alleged that he was behaving like a university lecturer who consistently failed his student who had refused to sleep with him.

But this was denied by Akpabio.

“At no time did I ever harass any woman. I was raised very well by my late single mother, and I have always upheld respect for women. I was even awarded the most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria,” he noted.

The issue has generated huge debate in Nigeria with many calling for an independent investigation.

In a social media post, one of Akpabio’s predecessors as senate president Bukola Saraki said the issues raised were too serious to be simply brushed aside.

Earlier on Wednesday, two groups of protesters gathered at the assembly ground in the capital, Abuja – one backing Akpabio and the other in support of his colleague, chanting ”Akpabio must go.”

Senator Uduaghan used Wednesday’s plenary session to submit a formal petition calling for an investigation into Akpabio’s behaviour.

As the president, Akpabio permitted Uduaghan to proceed, directing that her petition be referred to the senate committee on the code of conduct, ethics, and public petitions.

Before becoming senate president less than two years ago, Akpabio was governor of the oil-rich Akwa Ibom state for eight years and also minister of Niger Delta affairs under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

‘She’s clamouring for sympathy’ – FOCAP criticises Juliet Asante over post-tenure allegations

0

Juliet Asante, the former Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority Juliet Asante, the former Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority

The Foundation of Concerned Arts Professionals (FOCAP) has criticized Juliet Asante, the former Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority (NFA), for her recent post highlighting the challenges she faced during her tenure.

In a Facebook post on March 2, 2025, Asante disclosed the struggles she encountered, including financial difficulties, lack of support, and sexual harassment while in office.

However, FOCAP has dismissed her statements as “unfortunate,” questioning why she did not address such issues during her tenure if she considered herself a strong and capable leader.

The president of FOCAP, Kojo Preko Dankwa, claimed that Asante’s decision to speak out after leaving her position was merely an attempt to seek public sympathy.

FOCAP also accused Asante of presenting a one-sided narrative, alleging that she often disrespected the NFA board, disregarded its directives, and made decisions without proper consultation.

“To come out and pretend to seek public sympathy and make it seem like you were trying to do something for the industry but were not given support from the board—the question is, did you consult the board in all your dealings?” Dankwa questioned.

“So, for me, it is neither here nor there for Juliet to come out and speak the way she did, clamoring for sympathy, which is not needed,” he added.

Dankwa’s comments align with those of filmmaker and fellow board member Ola Michael, who has also criticized Asante for her revelations.

Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has disclosed that he will be spending the night sleeping among persons displaced by the tidal waves in Ketu South.

Tidal waves in the Ketu South Constituency have displaced several people, especially in Amutinu, Agavedzi, Salakope, and their environs.

The waves are said to have destroyed burial grounds, residences, and other properties.

This has forced some families to exhume the bodies of their loved ones who had been buried.

Reports indicate that about 600 people have been displaced as a result.

He says his decision to sleep at the temporary facility provided to house the displaced persons is to experience their plight firsthand.

In a social media post, he explained, “I’ll be spending the night with the good people of Agavedzi-Salakɔƒe-Amutinu. It is important for us to feel what they feel even as we formulate and implement the permanent solution.”

‘Were we elected to come sit here and listen to cost of BoG building?’ – NPP MP fumes

Habib Iddrisu is the First Deputy Minority Whip Habib Iddrisu is the First Deputy Minority Whip

The appearance of the Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Johnson Asiama, in Parliament to brief the House on the cost of the newly-constructed Bank of Ghana Headquarters led to a brief moment of confusion between the Minority and Majority caucuses on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

The First Deputy Minority Whip, Habib Iddrisu, questioned the basis on which the governor was on the floor, expressing concern over the lack of proper procedure.

According to him, their constituents did not elect them to Parliament simply to sit and listen to briefings on the cost of the building, which he deemed trivial.

Instead, he said their duty is to engage in meaningful discussions and make decisions on matters of national importance.

Habib Iddrisu further criticised the governor for his failure to stabilise the Ghana cedi against the United States dollar.

“The invitation of the governor was not by any motion or question, neither was it captured, and so, on what basis are we bringing him? Just for him to come and brief us on the cost of a building? Is that what we were elected to do when he cannot even control the dollar to the cedi when it is about 15 dollars to the cedi, and then you are bringing him here to do that?” he fumed.

Habib Iddrisu added that his caucus was not prepared to give the governor an audience or listen to what he had to say regarding the cost of the building.

“He’s in charge of the quality [of the building], so he should do that but he should not come here to brief us on the building. We are not interested in knowing the cost of a building and he’s not properly before the House,” he continued.

He added, “On what basis is he here? Is it a motion? Is it a question? We need to know the basis on which the governor is here. We are not ready to listen to him on the cost of a building. Mr. Speaker, I think you should guide us on what basis he is here to brief us rather than that, we will not listen to him.”

The Minority, in their view, stated that the invitation of Dr. Asiama to the House was not based on a motion raised, nor were they informed about it.

UNESCO Country Representative pays courtesy call on Foreign Minister

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Edmond Moukala Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Edmond Moukala

Edmond Moukala, Country Representative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to Ghana, has paid a courtesy call on Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, in Accra.

A statement issued by the Foreign Affairs Ministry, copied to the Ghana News Agency, said the main goal of the meeting was to brief the Minister on the projects and programmes UNESCO was implementing in Ghana.

Moukala informed the Minister that the institution was assisting Ghana in developing a virtual reality experience for the Forts and Castles to enhance visitors’ experiences.

He stated that the projects were being undertaken with young Ghanaian computer programmers and performers.

He noted that the aims of The Black Star Experience were in line with the objectives of the institution; thus, they were going to collaborate with the relevant ministries on it.

He also highlighted the Mansa Musa World Show, an African musical theatre production in which a group of young heroes and heroines embarks on a fascinating adventure back in time to discover the lost gold of Mansa Musa, an ancient West African ruler of the Mali Empire, said to be possibly the richest man to have ever lived.

The statement added that the show was sponsored by UNESCO.

In response, Ablakwa expressed appreciation to UNESCO for its support of Ghana through its Cultural and Educational Diplomacy initiatives.

He stated that he would collaborate with his colleagues, the Minister of Education and the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, to ensure that Ghana reaps the full benefits of UNESCO’s support in preserving both the tangible and intangible heritage of Ghana.

He also assured the Government’s readiness to align its agenda with UNESCO’s programmes so the country could benefit fully.

At the end of the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening relations.

Ghana marks 68th Independence Day, ‘modest’ celebrations expected nationwide

0

Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain her independence Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain her independence

Ghanaians will, today, March 6, 2025, hold celebratory activities to mark the country’s liberation from colonial rule nearly seven decades ago.

Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence in 1957. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who led the successful negotiations with the British colonial government and declared independence on March 6, 1957, became the first Prime Minister and later the first President of Ghana in 1960.

Unlike previous years, when grand ceremonies ignited the country’s historic Black Star Square and regional capitals, this year’s commemoration will be “modest” to cut costs, the government has said.

A parade will be held at the seat of government, where the President will address the nation to herald the celebrations.

This year’s celebration at the Presidency, on the theme: “Reflect, Review, Reseat,” will feature key activities such as a Military Guard of Honour to be reviewed by the President and a cultural performance by two groups of basic school pupils.

There will also be a poetry recital by a senior high school student.

Similar “modest” celebrations are expected to be held by Municipal, Metropolitan, and District Assemblies across the country.

Recent celebrations had been held on a rotational basis, mostly outside the capital, to engender inclusiveness and decentralization – but the rotational policy has been reversed by the government as part of measures to cut expenditure.

Although the day is observed on March 6, it will be a month-long celebration with a raft of institutional activities aimed at invoking the spirit of nationalism, patriotism, unity, resilience, and pride in being Ghanaian.

Sixty-eight years ago, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the leader of Ghana’s independence movement, declared the country “free forever” before a joyous crowd gathered at the old polo grounds in Accra.

He declared: “Ghana, your beloved country, is free forever. We have awakened. We shall no more go back to sleep anymore. Today, from now on, there is a new African in the world. This new African is capable of managing his own affairs.”

He also announced Ghana’s frontline role in the African liberation movement with the profound statement: “Our independence is meaningless unless it is linked to the total liberation of the African continent.”

A new flag for the sovereign nation was hoisted at midnight in 1957. The colours of the flag are red, representing the blood shed in the struggle for independence; yellow, symbolizing gold and prosperity; green, signifying the country’s lush vegetation and natural wealth; and a black star in the middle, representing the African identity and hope for African unity and liberation.

Skills training key to tackling unemployment, says Sar Consult director

0

The Director of Sar Consult has stated that skills training is a key solution to the rising unemployment rate in Ghana.

Siddik Abdul-Razak voiced concerns about the growing number of university graduates who are struggling to find employment.

He stated, “We believe that focusing on technical and vocational education is one of the surest ways for the country to progress,” following the graduation of 11 students from the school in Kumasi.

The Ghana Statistical Service reports that by the first three quarters of 2023, the country’s unemployment rate climbed to 14.7%.

The number of unemployed youth aged 15 to 35 grew from around 1.2 million to over 1.3 million, with the unemployment rate for females consistently surpassing that of males.

For the past 11 years, Sar Consult has provided training to hundreds of students in various skills such as bakery, decoration, event management, soap making, and cookery, among others.

In this context, Mr. Rahman emphasized the importance of prioritizing technical and vocational education training.

The Director also mentioned that they have consistently partnered with other institutions, including the National Service Authority, to help young people acquire employable skills.

He called on the government to support institutions like his and invest in technical and vocational education to strengthen the local economy and create lasting job opportunities for the youth.

The trainees expressed their appreciation to the school for its guidance and encouraged other young people to follow their path.

One of the learners, Suallah Sahadatu, urged unemployed graduates to consider skills training institutions to gain employable skills.

She stated that the informal sector often offers better pay than many formal sector jobs, encouraging the youth to embrace skills training.

Ghanaians are not patronizing local cars – Baafi Okyere

Michael Okyere Baafi Deputy Trade Minister Michael Okyere Baafi Deputy Trade Minister Michael Okyere MP for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi

Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi has called on Ghanaians to support the country’s vehicle assembly industry, expressing frustration over the lack of patronage for locally assembled cars.

He explained that the government introduced policies to encourage local vehicle manufacturing, but Ghanaians still preferred imported second-hand vehicles.

“We brought about seven different vehicle assembly plants to Ghana. We wanted to reduce the number of old cars being imported, as they cause emission problems,” he stated in an interview on GHOne TV, monitored by MyNewsGh.

However, he lamented the resistance faced when the government attempted to regulate the importation of overused vehicles, especially those older than ten years.

“When we tried to introduce strict policies to curb the import of overused vehicles, some interest groups in the industry deliberately frustrated our efforts. As a result, we have not been able to fully achieve our goal,” he revealed.

The MP emphasized that Ghana must gradually reduce its reliance on imported vehicles and focus on developing its automotive industry.

“If we truly want to grow, we must start valuing and buying what we produce. That is the only way to make progress,” he concluded.

GES sets up committee to validate and reinstate sacked teachers

0

The Ghana Education Service has announced that the government is to reinstate all teachers whose appointments were revoked.

As a result, a committee has been set up to assist with the validation process.

Teachers affected by this layoff must provide their appointment letter, academic certificate, licensure certificate, and national service certificate.

The affected teachers are expected to complete the process by March 14, 2025.

Member of Parliament for Tafo in the Ashanti Region, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, who has previously condemned the government for its insensitive decision to terminate the appointments of young Ghanaians, thanked the president for the decision to recall teachers back to the classroom.

He urged that the same measure be applied across other sectors affected by the decision made on February 12, 2025.

His post on social media read: “The chickens are coming home to roost. Thank you, Mr. President. Respectfully, may you consider the other agencies, especially PMMC workers, who had their appointments terminated even though they were recruited and appointed in 2022—yes, 2022, Mr. President. Kindly look upon your children with favor, Sir.”

Ivory Coast, Ghana Call on Sahel Juntas to Rejoin ECOWAS

0

Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara and Ghanaian leader John Dramani Mahama urged Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to reconsider their decision to leave the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), emphasising the need for regional unity.

The three military-led governments, which seized power through coups between 2020 and 2023, officially exited ECOWAS in January 2024, forming the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). They accused the regional bloc of failing to assist them in their fight against terrorism and violence and of being overly aligned with France.

Ivory Coast, Ghana Call on Sahel Juntas to Rejoin ECOWAS

Mahama, who visited Abidjan on Wednesday, offered to mediate between ECOWAS and AES, stressing that West Africa’s future depends on collaboration.

Ouattara echoed the sentiment, expressing hope that the appeal would bring the three nations back into ECOWAS.

Despite previous mediation efforts by Togo and Senegal, the juntas maintain that their exit is irreversible.

However, Mahama announced plans to visit the three countries soon, emphasising that “there’s more that unites us than divides us.”

They said they were acting on orders from above – Amewu on attack at his residence

The residence of former Hohoe Member of Parliament, John Peter Amewu, was reportedly stormed by unidentified gunmen on Wednesday, March 5, in what has been described as a politically motivated incident.

According to Amewu, one of the intruders claimed to be a bailiff and insisted that they were there to serve him with a legal notice.

“They said they were there to serve me a notice because I was not duly elected in 2020, hence their decision to serve me. And that the C.I. was not constitutional,” he stated when Citi News contacted him for confirmation.

Further reports indicate that the assailants claimed they were acting on “orders from above,” although no official confirmation has been given regarding the nature of these instructions.

At the time of the incident, Amewu was reportedly not at home. However, tensions escalated as the armed men fired warning shots, prompting a confrontation with some of Amewu’s supporters.

Authorities have yet to provide details on the attackers’ identities or their motivations. Investigations are expected to be launched to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Arne Slot press conference: PSG 0-1 Liverpool, Harvey Elliott, Anfield second leg and more

0

On whether he made any tactical changes during the game…

We changed a bit the way we pressed in the second half compared to the first half. In the first half they had three or four open chances, so one-on-ones and a cut-back cross that just went over the bar. [There was the] moment they went one-on-one and the ball came back and then two or three chances in a row. In the first half it was almost a miracle that it was 0-0.

The second half, it was more due to their quality that they could create chances because all of their shots were outside of the box, but these players – I’ve said it already and our players have the same – if they get shots from 18 or 20 yards it is still half a chance because they can hit it so hard. That’s why I think you saw two teams that have dominated their leagues – them in France, us in England – playing against each other with so much quality in the game. But they were by far the better team in ball possession than us.

On Trent Alexander-Arnold’s defensive performance…

I see the same thing during the season many more times. There have been games – I think City away was one of them – where he was outplayed a few times but we didn’t concede that many big chances against City, so sometimes stats are not telling you the truth. If he goes past someone in the width of the pitch, it doesn’t tell you that he’s outplayed. The stats that do matter, I just already said a few times, are clear that Paris Saint-Germain are this season incredible in Europe and in their league. Trent, in the first half, one or two times had some difficulties but in general he defended really well, especially also in the second half.

On which team will go into the second leg with more confidence…

If you look at the result, we come away here really positive but if you look at the performance then they are two different things. I think Paris Saint-Germain take a lot of positives towards the game we are going to play in a week. But I can tell you, they’re not only going to play against us, they are also going to play against our fans – and we really need them. Not only next Tuesday, but we need our fans on Saturday against Southampton as well. Like you might know, we don’t have a winter break in England so we just keep on playing for months already and these players are definitely going to need the help of our fans to show up two times as they did in the last few months.

Canada and Ghana sign historic air transport agreement

0

In a landmark move to strengthen bilateral ties, Canada and Ghana have reached their first-ever air transport agreement, paving the way for enhanced connectivity, tourism, and trade between the two nations.

Announced by Canada’s Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, the Honourable Anita Anand in a statement issued by the government of Canada, the new agreement grants airlines from both countries the right to operate scheduled passenger and cargo flights. The deal allows for 14 weekly passenger flights and 10 weekly all-cargo flights for airlines from each country.

The agreement also offers flexibility in airline designation, enabling multiple carriers to serve any points in both Canada and Ghana, a move expected to enhance competition and improve travel options for passengers.

Expressing enthusiasm about the deal, Minister Anand highlighted Ghana’s increasing importance in Canada’s global economic strategy.

“Ghana is a growing market for Canada, and I am pleased to see this first agreement open the door to new opportunities for travellers and businesses in both countries. This agreement will connect more passengers and strengthen our cultural and commercial ties,” she said.

The move aligns with Canada’s Blue Sky policy, which aims to foster long-term, sustainable competition in the air transport sector. With air transport agreements now covering over 125 countries, Canada is strategically positioning itself as a global aviation leader.

The new agreement is expected to bolster trade between Canada and Ghana, which saw two-way merchandise trade surpass $380 million in 2023. Canadian exports to Ghana accounted for $281 million, while imports from Ghana stood at $99.8 million.

Canada’s Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, the Honourable Mary Ng, emphasised the agreement’s economic benefits.

“The newly finalised Air Transport Agreement between Canada and Ghana represents a significant step forward for both nations. This agreement will enhance connectivity, promote tourism, and drive economic growth. For Canada, it provides critical support for our exporters, opening doors to the dynamic West African market and enabling Canadian businesses to meet global demand for their products. This partnership reinforces our commitment to expanding trade and fostering mutually beneficial relationships across the globe,” she stated.

The agreement is effective immediately, meaning airlines can start operating flights under the new terms without delay. This development is expected to benefit business travellers, tourists, and cargo operators, making Canada and Ghana more accessible to each other.

With the deal in place, stakeholders in both the aviation and trade sectors anticipate increased investments, more job opportunities, and improved cultural exchange between the two nations.

This milestone further cements Ghana’s position as a key gateway to West Africa and strengthens its international partnerships, setting the stage for deeper economic collaboration in the years ahead.

Kane strikes twice as Bayern cruise to win over Leverkusen

0

Bayern Munich have one foot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League after a comfortable win against 10-man Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

Harry Kane gave the hosts an early breakthrough in the all-German meeting before Jamal Musiala doubled their lead by capitalising on a mistake from Leverkusen goalkeeper Matej Kovar.

The visitors went down to 10 men after a second yellow for Nordi Mukiele just past the hour mark, then Kane scored his 31st goal of the season from the penalty spot to seal the victory.

It only took Bayern nine minutes to draw first blood as Kane popped up in front of Mukiele to head home a perfectly-weighted cross from Michael Olise.

The visitors almost found a way back when Dayot Upamecano’s dreadful backpass was intercepted by Jeremie Frimpong inside the box, but Bayern captain Manuel Neuer came to his team-mate’s rescue with a brilliant save to deny Leverkusen a swift equaliser.

Vincent Kompany’s side were denied a second as headed Joshua Kimmich’s corner against the crossbar.

After being outplayed in the first half, Leverkusen’s hopes of a comeback in the second were dashed when Kovar let a Kimmich cross slip through his gloves for Musiala to poke into an open goal.

Mukiele was then dismissed for a reckless challenge on Kingsley Coman before Kane was dragged down to the floor by substitute Edmond Tapsoba during a corner.

Referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot after a video assistant referee (VAR) review and the England captain made no mistake from 12 yards to pull the Bundesliga leaders further ahead.

The second leg at BayArena will take place on Tuesday, 11 March (20:00 GMT).

‘What is going on?’- Afenyo-Markin cries out amid chaos in Parliament

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin

Chaos erupted on the floor of Parliament during a debate on digitisation, which saw heated exchanges on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.

Tensions flared as the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, delivered a statement criticising Ghana’s digitisation agenda.

He stated, “What type of digitisation is this? You take my biodata on a card, and when I appear in person, I am not important, but the card lying at home is? Go to your bank today without carrying your Ghana Card, there should be proper digitisation so that when you appear at the bank, your digital data can be accessed and processed.”

He continued, “And that is the kind of digitisation that should be guided by a blueprint to inform our actions, not an uncoordinated approach.”

After his statement, First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor proceeded to call on another Member of Parliament to contribute to the debate.

Suddenly, tensions escalated as Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin questioned the proceedings.

“What is going on? What is happening here? We will not allow this! What is going on in this chamber? No, this has never happened in the history of Ghana’s politics. Why?” he protested.

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has expressed gratitude to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Asiama, for his transparency regarding the construction of the new Central Bank headquarters.

He noted that in Dr Asiama’s report to Parliament, he acknowledged that the entire project was completed at a lower cost than initially projected, resulting in significant savings for the country.

“Dr Addison is no more there, his other deputies are not there. Dr Asiama and his new team are here to give us an honest account of what the records have. And they’ve been very sincere. Should anybody on the streets of Accra today claim that the Central Bank building did not meet value for money or was too expensive, what the Bank of Ghana is saying is that it is actually cheaper compared to market standards,” he stated.

The Central Bank further clarified that of the total construction cost of $222 million, $202 million has been paid, with $20 million still outstanding.

Addressing Parliament on Wednesday, March 5, after Dr Asiama’s report on the project’s cost, Mr Afenyo-Markin emphasised that the construction represented significant savings for the state.

He highlighted that instead of the contractor being paid $2,658 per square metre, the BoG successfully negotiated a lower rate of $2,068 per square metre.

“The Bank of Ghana is saying that, apart from following due process, it has also saved taxpayers money. We have a 107,000-square-metre project, and on each square metre, there is a savings of $600 plus,” he added.

Ghana must position itself as Africa’s premier gold trading hub – Dr Anarfi Sarpong

0

Ghana must take deliberate steps to establish itself as Africa’s premier gold trading hub to fully harness the economic benefits of its gold resources, according to Dr William Anarfi Sarpong, a key proponent of the Gold Souq project.

Dr Sarpong, who is leading the initiative, believes Ghana’s current gold trade structure favours raw exports over value addition, limiting the country’s potential earnings. He argues that creating a structured gold marketplace, much like Dubai’s Deira Gold Souq, could boost revenue, create jobs, and elevate Ghana’s status in the global gold industry.

“For centuries, Ghana has been known as the Gold Coast, yet we have not maximised the full potential of this resource. We must transition from just mining and exporting gold to refining, designing, and trading it at a global scale. That is what the Gold Souq seeks to achieve,” he stated.

The Gold Souq project, expected to generate between $2 billion and $10 billion annually, will provide a structured marketplace for gold trade, bringing together artisans, jewellers, investors, and tourists. The initiative will integrate gold refining, jewellery design, and trading facilities, creating a competitive industry that attracts both local and international buyers.

According to Dr Sarpong, Ghana’s gold sector has long been dominated by raw exports, illegal mining activities, and middlemen, leaving little value within the country. He believes the Gold Souq will change the narrative by ensuring that Ghana benefits from the entire gold value chain.

“If we can refine and process more of our gold locally, we can increase our revenue exponentially. Right now, a lot of our gold ends up in the international market through intermediaries, and we lose billions of dollars in the process,” he noted.

Beyond the economic benefits, Dr Sarpong emphasised the potential impact on tourism and culture. He envisions the Gold Souq as a global attraction, drawing visitors who want to experience Ghana’s rich gold heritage, learn about traditional goldsmithing techniques, and purchase authentic Ghanaian jewellery.

“Imagine a world-class gold marketplace where tourists can see gold being refined, buy handcrafted jewellery, and learn about our centuries-old gold craftsmanship. This will not only generate foreign exchange but also revive our cultural industries,” he explained.

He further stressed the importance of positioning Ghana as the go-to destination for luxury gold shopping, much like Dubai and India.

“People travel to Dubai to buy gold. Why can’t they come to Ghana, the original Gold Coast? We have the resources, the history, and the talent to make this happen,” he added.

Dr Sarpong called on the government and private sector to support the initiative, emphasising that Ghana cannot afford to lose out on a multi-billion-dollar opportunity. He urged stakeholders in the gold industry, tourism, and creative arts sector to unite behind the vision and push for its realisation.

Job creation, export diversification crucial for Africa’s dev’t – ACET

0

Dr. Edward K. Brown, an economist and Senior Director of Research, Policy and Programmes at the Africa Center for Economic Transformation (ACET), has emphasized the critical role of economic transformation in driving Africa’s development.

Speaking on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV, Dr. Brown highlighted the need for African economies to move beyond structural adjustments and focus on adding value to their products and exports.

“Absolutely, I think, in the 1980s and 1990s, we were talking about structural adjustments and so on. But if you are not transforming the structure of the economy into high value-added products and exports. Then you are not able to create jobs, you are not able to get the revenue that you need to finance social programmes.

“So, transformation is very critical; it will help to alleviate poverty, so rather than focusing on poverty, you focus on real outcomes.

He added, “If your economy is transforming, you are adding value to the products, and you are creating the jobs necessary, then you can reduce poverty, you can have an inclusive growth, and all those things come together around that framework.”

Dr. Brown stressed that economic transformation is essential for reducing poverty and achieving sustainable development.

He noted that by focusing on value addition, job creation, and inclusive growth, African economies can become more resilient and self-sufficient.

He also underscored the importance of export diversification to protect economies from external shocks, urging policymakers to prioritize strategies that drive long-term transformation.

Take a look at the approved and unapproved venues for the Ghana Premier League

0

Baba Yara Sports Stadium is the home grounds of Asante Kotoko Baba Yara Sports Stadium is the home grounds of Asante Kotoko

The Club Licensing Department of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) have declined the use of about five Ghana Premier League venues following their recent inspections.

After a brief halt following the death of a fan of Asante Kotoko, the GFA announced on Friday, February 28, 2025, that the league was due to resume on Friday, March 7, 2025.

As such, measures were put in place to ensure fan safety at the various match venues as they gear up for the resumption.

This meant that the Club Licensing Department conducted a reinspection of the stadiums and has since brought out their verdict.

Out of the fifteen venues, these five were approved:

Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex, home grounds of Nations FC

Dun’s Park, Bibiani, which serves as the home grounds for Bibiani Gold Stars

Nsenkyire Sports Arena, home of defending champions FC Samartex

TNA Park, Tarkwa, home grounds of Medeama SC

Kpando Sports Stadium, the home grounds of Kpando Heart of Lions

Five other venues have been approved but with certain requirements that need to be met.

Therefore, these venues will be inspected again on March 9, 2025, to ensure that the required changes have been made. The venues are:

Nii Adjei Kraku II Park

Tuba Astro Turf

Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium

Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park

Nana Agyemang Badu Park

Interestingly, five venues also fell short of the requirements and have therefore been rejected by the Club Licensing Department.

Notable venues among these are the home grounds of Asante Kotoko, (Baba Yara Sports Stadium) and Hearts of Oak (University of Ghana Stadium).

The others are:

Wenchi Town Park

Berekum Golden City Park

AAK II Sports Arena

The Club Licensing Department gave various reasons, including safety and security concerns, and gave them until March 9, 2025, to fix these issues for another inspection.

Hohoe is peaceful, don’t give it a bad name

0

Member of Parliament (MP) for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo has cautioned former Hohoe MP John Peter Amewu to desist from tarnishing the reputation of the constituency, stressing that Hohoe is a peaceful place.

His statement follows reports indicating that some unknown assailants, on Wednesday, March 5, stormed the former MP’s residence and fired gunshots with one purporting to be a court bailiff.

In an exclusive interview on Channel One Newsroom on Wednesday, March 5, Tsekpo refuted claims that gunmen reportedly stormed the residence of Amewu in Hohoe.

He maintains that it was only a delegation which included a court bailiff and a security personnel, that had gone to post a court notice on the wall of Amewu’s residence, adding that no guns had been fired.

Tsepko posits that Amewu had miscommunicated the incident to the media in an attempt to perhaps score some political point.

Tsekpo insisted that the Hohoe is a peaceful constituency devoid of disorderliness.

“The former MP knows that the people of Hohoe, we have five traditional areas in Hohoe, we are a very peaceful people. That is why I said he should exercise patience when such things happen. You will think you are selling your party but you are giving Hohoe a bad name. I don’t think his life is in danger.

“We were in the constituency last two weeks together. He himself said in an interview that when he was the MP and a minister, he was driving alone, so he is safe,” he stated.

Irregularity in Bank of Ghana Headquarters Cost Unfounded – Afenyo Markin

UK competition watchdog drops Microsoft-OpenAI probe

0

The UK competition watchdog has ended its investigation into the partnership between Microsoft and the maker of ChatGPT, OpenAI.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) was looking into whether Microsoft’s relationship with what is the world’s best known artificial intelligence (AI) firm changed after the turmoil which saw its boss Sam Altman fired and then rehired.

The CMA has concluded that, despite Microsoft investing billions of dollars into OpenAI and having exclusive uses of some of its AI products, the partnership remains the same, so is not subject to review under the UK’s merger rules.

Digital rights campaigners, Foxglove, said it showed the CMA had been “defanged.”

The CMA opened the probe in December 2023, after Microsoft had put pressure on OpenAI to re-employ Mr Altman, days after he had been sacked.

“In view of Microsoft’s potentially important role in securing Sam Altman’s re-appointment, the CMA believed there was a reasonable chance that an investigation would reveal that Microsoft had increased its control over OpenAI’s commercial policy,” the watchdog said.

But on Wednesday, it concluded Microsoft “exerts a high level of material influence” over OpenAI’s commercial policy without fully controlling it.

“Because this change of control has not happened, the partnership in its current form does not qualify for review under the UK’s merger control regime,” CMA Executive Director for Mergers Joel Bamford posted in an article on LinkedIn.

But he added: “The CMA’s findings on jurisdiction should not be read as the partnership being given a clean bill of health on potential competition concerns; but the UK merger control regime must of course operate within the remit set down by Parliament.”

Critics, though, say the decision is linked to the changed political environment the CMA is now operating in.

The government has instructed the country’s regulators to suggest ways of stimulating economic growth.

In January, the government removed the then chair of the CMA, Marcus Bokkerink, because it was unhappy with his response to that call.

He was replaced on an interim basis by Doug Gurr, former boss of Amazon UK.

“The CMA has sat on this decision for over a year, yet within just a few weeks of a former Amazon boss being installed as chair, it has decided everything was absolutely fine all along, nothing to see here,” said Foxglove co-executive director Rosa Curling.

“This is a bad sign that Big Tech has successfully convinced the prime minister to defang our competition regulator and let Big Tech gobble up the current generation of cutting-edge tech – just like they did the last one,” she told the BBC.

When BBC News contacted the CMA for a response to these comments, they pointed us to Mr Bamford’s LinkedIn post, where he said: “We are not blind to the length of time that this investigation has taken… We know pace matters to business confidence and investment.”

He added the reason this investigation took so long was because the relationship between Microsoft and OpenAI had been changing over that time.

In 2024, while Mr Bokkerink was chair, the CMA also issued similar “found not to qualify” decisions on other AI partnerships it reviewed involving firms including Microsoft, Amazon and Google.

In April of same year, the CMA’s chief executive Sarah Cardell said the body had “real concerns” about an “interconnected web” of AI partnerships between big tech firms.

But in a set of instructions to the CMA issued in February, the government said it should prioritise “pro-growth and pro-investment interventions”.

The same month the UK sided with the US in not signing an agreement on AI at a summit in Paris.

US Vice President JD Vance had told delegates that too much regulation of AI could “kill a transformative industry just as it’s taking off”.

“The CMA will be taking a less interventionist approach to protecting competition and to merger control reviews, [but] this does not mean the CMA will approve every deal presented to it without question,” said Chloe Birkett, competition lawyer at law firm Freeths.

“The CMA’s purpose is to help preserve competition in markets to ensure that consumers get a fair deal,” she said.

In a statement Microsoft said: “Our OpenAI partnership and its continued evolution promote competition, innovation, and responsible AI development, and we welcome the CMA’s conclusion, after careful and prudent consideration of the commercial realities, to close its investigation.”

7 countries with iconic monuments of Dr Kwame Nkrumah

0

As Ghana gears up to celebrate 68 years of independence on 6th March 2025, the legacy of Dr Kwame Nkrumah remains as powerful as ever.

More than just Ghana’s first President, Nkrumah was a visionary leader, a Pan-African icon, and a revolutionary force who helped shape the destiny of an entire continent.

His dream of a united, independent Africa inspired liberation movements far beyond Ghana’s borders, earning him global recognition.

In honour of his contributions, several countries across Africa and beyond have erected monuments, named roads, and even built universities to keep his memory alive.

Here are seven countries that pay tribute to one of Africa’s greatest leaders through iconic landmarks.

1. Bamako, Mali

The Kwame Nkrumah Roundabout is located in the vibrant city of Bamako, Mali. Visitors to the site are greeted by an impressive statue of Nkrumah, which stands tall against the backdrop of the city’s skyline, making it a perfect photo opportunity.

The monument’s design is not only aesthetically striking but also deeply symbolic, representing the struggles and aspirations of the African continent.

2. Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

A huge statue of Kwame Nkrumah stands outside the African Union (AU) headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Nkrumah was a founding member of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the predecessor of the AU.

The monument, a gift from the Chinese government, was completed in 2012 and unveiled by the late President John Evans Atta Mills at the 18th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.

3. Nkrumah University, Zambia

The Nkrumah University in Zambia was originally opened in 1967 as Kabwe Teachers’ Training College, initially training junior secondary school teachers.

In 1971, Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda renamed the institution Nkrumah Teachers’ College in honour of Kwame Nkrumah.

Today, it has grown into a full-fledged university, offering Bachelor’s degrees in Agricultural Sciences, Engineering, and Education, as well as postgraduate studies in related fields.

The university operates across three campuses, with its main campus, Munkoyo Street Campus, located 3 km from the Kabwe city centre. It also facilitates international student exchange programmes, primarily within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

4. Azikiwe-Nkrumah Hall – Lincoln University, USA

Azikiwe-Nkrumah Hall, built in 1865, is the oldest building on the Lincoln University campus in the United States.

Originally constructed during the American Civil War, the building initially served as a residence for professors. Over time, it became the African Centre and currently houses campus security offices. The hall is named in honour of two distinguished alumni:

  • Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe (Class of 1930) – First President of Nigeria.

  • Dr Kwame Nkrumah (Class of 1939) – First President of Ghana.

Today, Azikiwe-Nkrumah Hall houses Lincoln University’s Division of Institutional Advancement offices.

5. Nkrumah Avenue, Harare, Zimbabwe

Kwame Nkrumah Avenue is a major street located in Harare, Zimbabwe. Also referred to as Union Avenue, it spans approximately 0.41 kilometres and serves as a key part of the city’s road network.

The naming of this avenue highlights Zimbabwe’s recognition of Nkrumah’s contributions to African liberation and unity.

6. Avenida Kwame Nkrumah, Mozambique

Avenida Kwame Nkrumah is a prominent avenue in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, named in honour of Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

The road stands as a tribute to Nkrumah’s influence on anti-colonial struggles and Mozambique’s appreciation of his efforts in advancing African unity. It is one of several roads in the country that bear the names of iconic African leaders.

7. Nkrumah Road, Kenya

Nkrumah Road is located in the heart of Mombasa, one of Kenya’s largest cities and a key coastal hub. The road is lined with historic buildings, businesses, banks, and cultural landmarks.

It plays a crucial role in Mombasa’s commercial and administrative activities, making it a well-known and frequently visited area. The road’s name signifies Kenya’s appreciation of Nkrumah’s legacy and his contribution to African independence movements.

Conclusion

Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s influence extends far beyond Ghana’s borders. His role in African liberation and unity is commemorated through monuments, roads, universities, and buildings across various countries.

These landmarks serve as enduring symbols of his vision and remind future generations of the Pan-African dream he tirelessly championed.

Afigya Kwabre South assembly calls for District Coordinating Director’s removal

0

Assembly Members in the Afigya Kwabre South Municipality have demanded the immediate removal of the District Coordinating Director, Yvonne Naboo, accusing her of unilaterally suspending the operationalization of a quarry fund meant to generate revenue for development projects.

According to the assembly, the fund was suspended following an illegal takeover of the revenue collection point by thugs after the 2024 elections.

The members argue that the decision to halt the fund was made without their consultation, affecting the municipality’s revenue mobilization efforts.
Speaking to Citi News on March 5, the Assembly Member for the Buoho Electoral Area, Evans Kusi Worae, expressed frustration over the move.

“Our district coordinating director unilaterally suspended the quarry fund without consulting the assembly members, whilst revenue mobilization is one of our main streams for district development.

“In that regard, we are demanding the removal of the district coordinating director since she took that decision alone. Once she’s ready to do a review and give us a detailed explanation informing her decision, we will insist on her removal.” he stated.
Additionally, Worae called on the government to pay the outstanding ex-gratia owed to assembly members, emphasizing their dedication and service to the people.

“It is the rightful entitlement of the assembly members. We have sacrificed our time and effort to serve the people. If they refuse to pay the remaining outstanding then it is a clear disregard for the work we have done.

“Even though they’ve started releasing the funds after our press conference, we hope they finish the payments”, he added.

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Asiama, on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, appeared before Parliament’s Committee of the Whole to address concerns about the $11.1 million furnishing cost for the central bank’s new headquarters in Accra.

The facility inaugurated on November 20, 2024, by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been at the centre of public scrutiny, with critics questioning the timing and expenditure amidst Ghana’s economic challenges.

Addressing the House, Dr Asiama said the old BoG building had structural defects and was no longer fit for purpose.

“Mr Speaker, furniture and furnishings were awarded at $11.1 million,” he stated, reaffirming that the project was necessary to enhance the bank’s efficiency and strengthen Ghana’s financial system.

The BoG Governor reassured Parliament of the central bank’s commitment to prudent financial management, noting that the new facility would align with the government’s broader agenda for economic stability and financial sector growth.

Despite the BoG’s justification, the project has faced public backlash, with some questioning the prioritisation of the new headquarters at a time when the country is dealing with economic constraints.

The central bank, however, insists that the facility will provide a secure, modern workspace for its staff, improving regulatory oversight and ensuring greater efficiency in managing Ghana’s financial sector.

While Dr Asiama remained confident in the project’s long-term benefits, the matter is expected to generate further debate as Parliament continues to scrutinise the central bank’s financial decisions.

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has debunked claims that President John Dramani Mahama has appointed more than 60 presidential staffers at the Presidency.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, he reaffirmed the president’s commitment of managing resources prudently.

He clarified that only 30 presidential staffers are working at the Presidency as against the 337 political appointees of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“Mr. Speaker if you come to the Presidential staff, if you take out the civil servants who worked under the Akufo-Addo administration, there were 337 political appointees by President Akufo-Addo.

“As I speak to you, there are 26 presidential staffers and four Directors. If you put together the total number of people who work at the Presidency where I operate from, they will not amount to 60 yet they had 337 political appointees,” he noted.

Antoine Semenyo hit the Spinaroonie after scoring Antoine Semenyo hit the Spinaroonie after scoring

Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo has revealed the inspiration behind his iconic Spinaroonie celebration, a move widely recognised as the signature gesture of WWE legend Booker T.

During Bournemouth’s 5-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in January 2025, Semenyo executed the Spinaroonie after scoring his team’s fifth goal of the afternoon.

The celebration quickly went viral, trending for days and capturing the attention of football and wrestling fans alike.

In an interview with Bleacher Report, the Ghanaian forward shared the childhood influence that shaped his celebrations, revealing his deep love for wrestling.

“When I was a kid, I used to watch wrestling all the time. We played SmackDown vs. Raw, and my brother and I would turn the living room into a ring. We’d be fighting each other the whole day when our parents were out. I just fell in love with wrestling,” he said.

Semenyo’s admiration for Booker T fueled his appreciation for the WWE legend’s fights, making the Spinaroonie second nature to him. Surprisingly, he disclosed that he never practiced the move but can pull it off effortlessly.

“Booker T was my favorite, and honestly, I don’t even know how I learned the celebration. I’ve never practiced it, but it’s just there in my muscle memory—it’s just in me,” he added.

The 25-year-old has been in blistering form this season, scoring seven goals in 26 Premier League appearances while also providing four assists.
