World Pulses Day celebrated in Ghana with focus on nutrition and sustainability

0

The Communication Initiative for Change (CIC) – Meatless Monday Ghana celebrated World Pulses Day with a hybrid program that brought together experts and enthusiasts to discuss the nutritional and environmental benefits of pulses.

Moderated by Mr. Emmanuel Fiagbey, Director of CIC – Meatless Monday Ghana, the program featured insightful presentations from Mr. Peter Agbovi, the National Secretary of the Chefs Association of Ghana, and Mr. Wise Chukudi Letsa, a Nutritionist and Dietician from LETS Consult.

The speakers delivered engaging presentations that emphasized the high protein, fiber, and essential micronutrients found in beans, the main pulse or legume variety in Ghana. They also discussed the importance of regular consumption of beans in the management of lifestyle diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.

The program further explored the environmental advantages of consuming beans, including their role in promoting sustainable agriculture by improving soil fertility through atmospheric nitrogen fixation and supporting biodiversity. The speakers encouraged participants to increasingly adopt plant-based diets by making pulses/beans their primary source of protein instead of overly relying on meat sources.

The Communication Initiative for Change (CIC) – Meatless Monday Ghana is committed to promoting sustainable and healthy eating habits among Ghanaians in order to curb the growing trend of Non-Communicable Diseases among Ghanaians.

The project is being sponsored by the Johns Hopkins University Center for a Livable Future with technical support from the Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs.

Ken Agyapong’s team denounces ‘false reportage’ by Asaase Radio, threatens legal action

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, MP

The communication team for Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has issued a strong statement condemning a report by an Asaase FM reporter alleging that the MP was denied entry to the Prempeh Assembly Hall during Council of State elections.

Agyapong’s team vehemently denies the claim, stating that Kennedy Agyapong was greeted warmly, invited to enter, but chose to leave on his own accord.

They are demanding an immediate retraction and apology, threatening legal action if the request is not met.

The team accuses the reporter of “flagrant deviation from journalistic ethics and deliberately misrepresenting the facts to damage Agyapong’s reputation.

Read their full statement below;

STATEMENT ON FALSE REPORTAGE BY ASASE FM REPORTER

In what can only be described as a flagrant deviation from journalistic ethics, a reporter from Asaase FM in Kumasi published a grossly inaccurate and misleading account of events this afternoon, during the Ashanti Region Council of State election.

The publication, inconsistent with the fundamental tenets of professional journalism, sought to distort reality in a manner unbecoming of a media practitioner entrusted with the responsibility of truthfully informing the public.

For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to set the record straight: As duly authorized members of the communication team of Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong, we categorically affirm that at no point was Hon. Agyapong denied entry into the Prempeh Assembly Hall, where the Council of State elections were taking place. Upon his arrival at the venue, he courteously exchanged pleasantries with various dignitaries, including the former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Appiah Stadium, a well-known National Democratic Congress (NDC) activist.

Despite multiple invitations to enter the Assembly Hall, extended even by these distinguished figures, Hon. Agyapong, out of his own volition, chose to remain outside and subsequently departed to attend to the business for which he had traveled to Kumasi. His decision was neither a result of coercion nor denial of access but a matter of personal discretion.

It is, therefore, both legally and ethically reprehensible for the Asase FM reporter to peddle such an egregious falsehood against Hon. Agyapong. The report not only misrepresents the facts but also seeks to mislead the public and injure the reputation of a statesman whose integrity remains unblemished.

In light of these circumstances, we hereby demand the immediate retraction of this baseless publication. Furthermore, we expect an unreserved, unequivocal, and prominently placed apology to be issued forthwith, acknowledging the inaccuracy of the said report.

Failure to rectify this professional misconduct will leave us with no choice but to pursue all available legal remedies to ensure that the sanctity of truth prevails, and that responsible journalism is upheld.

Signed,

Ken Ohene Agyapong’s Communication Team

Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire may have been sparked by unattended children playing with fire.

One of the victims, Emissa Monica, shared her heartbreaking account of losing everything in the devastating blaze.

“I have lost everything. All my belongings have been reduced to ashes. I had about GH₵500 in my room, and it’s all gone in the fire,” she lamented.

PTAs to be reinstated in public schools

0

Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu has announced the return of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) to the management framework of public schools.

The move aims to strengthen cooperation between parents and teachers, ultimately enhancing student learning outcomes.

Speaking at a public forum, the minister highlighted the importance of PTAs in fostering community involvement in schools.

I am particularly happy to announce that PTAs will be introduced back into the management of education under the presidency of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, to work for parents and teachers to work together to improve learning outcomes in our educational institutions. And for PTAs to support our educational institutions to produce quality human capital for the country,” he stated.

The reintroduction of PTAs is expected to provide additional support to public schools, helping to address concerns such as infrastructure development, student discipline, and academic performance. Previously, PTAs played a key role in shaping policies at the school level, but their influence had been reduced in recent years.

With this policy shift, the government aims to create a more inclusive education system where parents, teachers, and administrators work together to ensure quality education for all students.

As the government moves forward with this decision, schools are expected to formally reintegrate PTAs into their administrative frameworks in the coming months.

Ghana defender Hafiz Gariba signs for Barcelona youth team

Hafiz Gariba is a new defender for Barcelona's youth team Hafiz Gariba is a new defender for Barcelona’s youth team

FC Barcelona have made a surprise move by securing the signing of promising young defender Hafiz Gariba.

The 18-year-old Ghanaian has signed a three-year contract, joining the Catalan giants with immediate effect.

According to Sport, Barcelona had been monitoring Gariba for some time but had to wait until he turned 18 to finalize the transfer.

The young defender, who honed his skills at the Marcet School in Barcelona, reportedly received offers from other top Spanish clubs, but his dream was always to play for Barcelona.

Gariba will initially be integrated into the club’s youth setup, joining the Juvenil B U-18 team at La Masia.

This will allow him to settle in and further develop his game before potentially progressing to the reserve team or even the senior squad in the future.

If he continues to develop as expected, Barcelona believes Gariba could earn a quick promotion to the Juvenil A team under Juliano Belletti.

From there, a place in Barcelona Atlètic, the club’s reserve team, could be within reach if he maintains strong progress.

Gariba’s physical strength is one of his standout attributes as a center-back, allowing him to dominate opposition attackers and neutralize threats effectively.

His signing is part of Barcelona’s growing strategy to identify and recruit promising young talents from Africa before they gain widespread recognition and become more expensive to acquire.

He will join fellow Ghanaian prospects David Oduro and Aziz Issah, who signed for Barcelona Atlètic in September 2024.

Imposing curfew was a necessity – North East Regional Minister

0

The North East Regional Minister, Ibrahim Tia, has justified the imposition of a curfew in Walewale, citing escalating violence and the need to protect lives and property.

On February 15, the Ministry of Interior implemented a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Walewale and its surrounding areas in the North East Region following a wave of violent attacks and killings along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway.

The directive, signed by Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, took effect on Saturday, February 15, 2025, and is enforced daily from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. The decision comes in response to a series of deadly assaults that have claimed at least nine lives, including that of a child.

Speaking on the matter in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday February 17, Minister Tia detailed the steps taken by authorities to manage the crisis before resorting to the curfew.

“We were given the opportunity to manage the crisis on the ground, and we agreed that we could manage it. That was when we started the stakeholder engagement with the chiefs and the opinion leaders, thinking that it could give us positive results and minimise the skirmishes along the highway,” he explained.

The engagement process began on Tuesday and continued until Thursday. However, it soon became apparent that the efforts were not yielding the desired results.

“It appeared as if, as we started the engagement processes, it was not yielding results. We haven’t gotten to the root cause of the matter, and the skirmishes were still going on,” Minister Tia noted.

Emphasising the priority of safeguarding lives and property, he stated, “There was nothing that we could do but to go along with the curfew.”

Tia said the decision to impose the curfew followed a series of violent incidents. He noted that last Monday, three lives were lost in Bunkurugu. Subsequently, another incident occurred in Walewale town, where a bus was set ablaze, although no lives were lost. The third incident took place on the outskirts of Walewale, resulting in the death of a gentleman in the hospital, injuries to others, and the tragic death of a baby inside the burning bus.

Minister Tia also noted reports of other isolated deaths resulting from the ongoing skirmishes on the road.

Meanwhile, Walewale’s Member of Parliament, Dr Mahama Tiah Abdul-Kabiru, has strongly criticised the curfew, calling it ill-conceived and politically motivated.

To further strengthen the country’s debt management strategy, the government has also deposited GH9.7 billion into the Debt Service Recovery Cedi Account (Sinking Fund). This move is intended to serve as a buffer for the next five DDEP coupon payments due in July and August 2025.

The late Bawa Sumaila

A 45-year-old man, Bawa Sumaila, has been killed by a stray bullet at Walewale in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region.

The youth in the area had gathered at the Mba Duraana’s palace to register their displeasure to the Regional Minister, Ibrahim Tia, who visited the palace to inform them about the curfew imposed on the Walewale township.

The announcement did not go down well with the youth, who started to agitate, compelling the security personnel to fire warning shots to disperse them from the palace.

However, the deceased, who was said to be part of a group of people who were standing near Mba Duraana’s palace, was hit by a stray bullet.

He was rushed to the Walewale Hospital, but was later pronounced dead.

The body of the deceased has been handed over to the family, and has since been buried.

The official vehicle of the North East Regional Minister, a Toyota V8 with registration number GT 9713-21, was attacked with stones and objects, and destroyed by the angry youth.

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, on the advice of the North East Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument, has imposed curfew on Walewale and its environs in the North East Region from 6pm to 6am, effective Saturday, February 15, 2025.

A statement signed by the Minister for the Interior called on the chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them, as well as use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace.

The angry youth accused the regional minister of allegedly advising the Interior Ministry to impose curfew in the municipality.

According to them, the curfew will affect about eight communities within the West Mamprusi Municipality as well as affect economic activities in the area.

Climate change issues must be localised – Climate, Sustainability Minister

0

Accra, Feb. 17, GNA – Mr Issifu Seidu, Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability has announced plans to localise climate change issues to help build resilience and sustain livelihood, especially for the vulnerable.

In that regard, he said the government would be working with relevant bodies to undertake advocacy, educate the public and stakeholders, and build capacity of relevant agencies on the climate crisis.

Mr Seidu was welcoming a four-member team from the University of Ghana, led by Professor Gordon A. Awandare, the Pro Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic and Students Affairs, and Prof. Chris Gordon, an Environmental Scientist, with special interests in the biodiversity and functioning of coastal, wetland and freshwater systems.

The Minister said climate change was impacting most sensitive aspects of the economy but was not popular, hence the need to take the necessary steps to educate people to influence behavior patterns that contributed to the change.

“Climate change is a behavioural issue. People do not know the impact of their actions on the environment, soil, and the air they breathe,” he said.

At the sub-regional level, he noted that the new ministry had plans to set up a climate change and sustainability hub to build a think tank, run advocacy, conduct high impact research to generate the evidence for intervention, and implement projects.

Referencing a world bank report, Mr Seidu stated that at least one million more people could fall into poverty due to climate shocks if urgent climate actions were not taken.

People’s income could reduce by up to 40 per cent for poor households by 2050, he said.

Prof. Gordon said the climate crisis affects everyone and that on-going studies indicated that night and day time temperatures had increased especially at the informal settlement.

Spikes in temperature, he said, presented a grave concern, especially for residents of informal settlements grappling with substandard housing and inadequate ventilation.

Prof. Gordon called for urgent action to confront the challenges of climate change impact to build resilience and ensure survival.

He noted that results from the study revealed a number of issues including buildings with insufficient spacing, inappropriate design, materials, lack of proper ventilation, rendering them ill-equipped to withstand climatic pressures.

“Due to heat stress, informal sector workers especially, labourers are unable to work for long hours and in the night, people cannot sleep well,” he said.

Prof. Gordon stated that the heat stress was contributing to mental health issues, and causing stress.

‘We’re going to remove you from Parliament’ – Dr. Tanko Computer to Annoh-Dompreh

0

NDC Director of Elections and IT Dr. Rashid Tanko Computer and Minority Leader Frank Annoh-Dompreh NDC Director of Elections and IT Dr. Rashid Tanko Computer and Minority Leader Frank Annoh-Dompreh

The Deputy Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Rashid Tanko Computer, has vowed that his party will remove the Member of Parliament for Nsawam/Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, from the House.

Speaking in an interview on ChannelOne TV on Monday, February 17, 2025, Dr. Tanko Computer alleged that Annoh-Dompreh, who is the Minority Chief Whip of the 9th Parliament, cheated his way into the House.

He claimed that fake pink sheets were used in the collation of the parliamentary election results for the constituency, leading to the declaration of the Minority Leader as the winner.

“We have filed an election petition against the declaration of Honourable Annoh-Dompreh as the winner of that contest, and the Koforidua High Court is handling the case. I have been reliably informed that his lawyers have been served. Lawyer Garry Nimako is representing him (Annoh-Dompreh).

“So, we are pursuing the case because the declaration was not proper. Fake pink sheets and scanned ones were used to declare him the winner while we were in court. We filed a stay of execution against the mandamus that was filed at the High Court, yet they went ahead and declared him. We are pursuing this matter vigorously,” he said.

The NDC Deputy Director of Elections and IT asserted that allowing Annoh-Dompreh to remain in Parliament would be an affront to the country’s democracy.

“He was not validly elected. The fact that he maneuvered his way into the House does not mean he was rightfully elected. He was not validly elected… The people voted him out, but he manipulated the process through these crooked means. We must ensure that the sanctity of our democracy and electoral processes is upheld. We are going to pursue this case to ensure that the rightfully elected person represents the people in the august House.”

About the Nsawam/Adoagyiri Parliamentary Election

Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the incumbent Nsawam/Adoagyiri MP, was declared the winner of the constituency’s 2024 parliamentary election at the Greater Accra Regional office of the Electoral Commission, where disputes over the results were being resolved.

The EC Returning Officer for Nsawam/Adoagyiri announced that Annoh-Dompreh polled 29,660 votes, defeating the NDC’s Philibert Amenorpe Fummey, who secured 29,433 votes.

The collation of the results was not completed on election day after supporters of the candidates besieged the constituency’s collation center.

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, indicated that only 143 polling station results had been collated when the process was halted.

“On election day, supporters besieged the collation center, bringing the process to a halt. The Commission attempted to resume and complete the collation on Friday, December 13. However, after results from 143 polling stations had been collated, there was an agreement to put the process on hold until the following day,” she said at a press briefing on December 19, 2024.

Jean Mensa added, “Unfortunately, the collation could not proceed the following day. We were informed by the police service that supporters of the parties were planning to storm the police depot and cause disruptions at the center. Based on police advice, we suspended the collation, leaving it incomplete, and therefore, we could not declare an outcome.”

On Friday, December 20, 2024, a High Court in Accra ordered the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) to proceed with the collation of the 2024 parliamentary election results for the Nsawam/Adoagyiri Constituency in the Eastern Region and declare the winner accordingly.

This ruling followed a mandamus application filed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the constituency, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, compelling the EC to collate and declare the results.

Meanwhile, the NDC candidate in the constituency had filed a petition seeking a re-run of the election.

Target taxation of high-net-worth individuals instead of ordinary Ghanaians – Prof. Bokpin

0

Prof. Godfred Bokpin, Economist Prof. Godfred Bokpin, Economist

An economist at the University of Ghana, Prof. Godfred Bokpin, has urged the government to shift its focus from taxing the income and salaries of low-income individuals to taxing high-net-worth individuals.

He believes that the ordinary Ghanaian is already impoverished, and thus taxing them places more pressure on their livelihoods and worsens their standard of living.

According to him, most wealthy individuals do not depend on their salaries or wages, as they have other sources of income that are not usually taxed directly.

“We are taxing income in terms of personal income tax, but high-net-worth individuals don’t actually live on salary or wages,” he was quoted as saying by myjoyonline.com.

The University of Ghana lecturer noted that the government must “develop a policy for the taxation of high-net-worth individuals, back it with a strategy, and then restructure the High Net Worth Office at the GRA.”

He further acknowledged the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) High Net Worth Office for its work in recent years, but noted that more needs to be done to ensure the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes.

Prof. Bokpin suggested that it should be “mandatory for all board members of state-owned enterprises and publicly listed companies to file their tax returns,” adding that this requirement could later be extended to other professionals like accountants, lawyers, and actors.

Prof. Bokpin also commented on the struggles of businesses in recent times, as Ghana’s economy is under intense pressure.

Additionally, he said that Ghana can recover more if it eliminates corruption and ensures efficiency, rather than heavily relying on taxation.

“Businesses are suffocating. This is a small open economy, but it is possible that one entity may be required to comply with maybe six or more different tax obligations in a fiscal year,” he said.

The 33-year-old superstar found the net in the 14th minute of the São Paulo State Championship match, providing a much-needed confidence boost after a challenging return to Brazilian football.

Since making his official comeback in October 2024, the former Barcelona star has been gradually working his way back to full fitness, having yet to complete a full 90 minutes for Santos.

After a slow start in his first three games, he showed signs of improvement on Sunday. The star forward is steadily regaining his form after a year-long absence due to a knee injury.

He showcased glimpses of his old brilliance when he picked up the ball, made a darting run into the box, and won a penalty after being brought down.

Neymar stepped up to take the spot-kick and, after a slight stutter in his run-up, coolly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, putting the 2016 Brazilian champions on the path to victory.

Thaciano doubled the lead in the 26th minute before Neymar set up Guilherme to seal a 3-1 win.

The victory lifts Santos to seventh place in the league standings, with 12 points from 10 games, and marks their first win in four matches.

NPP slams OSP over wanted notice for ex-Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has criticised the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) over its decision to declare former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, wanted.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Monday, February 17, the National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, questioned the rationale behind the OSP’s actions, describing them as unnecessary and sensational.

“I am particularly humbled as to why the OSP is still engaging in this drama, in this sensational act going nowhere. How can you declare a person who is not under arrest, or who has not been arrested in any suspicion, any grounds whatsoever, of any crime, or has he been charged with a particular offense wanted?” he questioned.

“I read the notice, and he says that anybody with information about Ofori-Atta should alert the Office of the Special Prosecutor, and I’m like, this is laughable,” he added.

His comment follows the OSP officially declaring Mr Ofori-Atta wanted to multiple financial misconduct allegations.

Mr Boakye further argued that even if Mr. Ofori-Atta appeared before the OSP, he has constitutional rights that allow him to remain silent and not answer questions to be put before him by the Special Prosecutor.

“It is enshrined in the Constitution, so even if a person should appear before you and he decides not to talk, what do you do?” he stated.

He challenged the OSP to proceed to court if it has sufficient evidence against the former minister.

Interior Ministry renews curfew in Bawku

0

The Minister for the Interior has, by Executive Instrument, renewed the curfew imposed on Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas in the Upper East Region.

The new curfew hours, effective Monday, February 17, 2025, will run from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the government also announced a total ban on carrying arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons in Bawku and its environs.

The statement warned that anyone found in possession of such items would be arrested and prosecuted.

The government urged chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and residents to remain calm and use non-violent means to resolve conflicts while working toward lasting peace in the area.

Meanwhile, on February 15, the Ministry of Interior imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Walewale and its surrounding communities in the North East Region following a series of violent attacks and killings along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway.

The directive, signed by Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, took effect on Saturday, February 15, 2025, and is enforced daily from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Background

Four children between the ages of five months to 13 years have been killed in Bawku since 25th January 2025 to 14th February 2025.

The first incident occurred on the 25th of January, 2025 when gunmen attacked a 13-year-old boy who was shepherding cattle around the Posum-Singnatinga-Possum enclave.

The boy who was only identified as Sherif was approached by the attackers who snapped his neck to death and bolted with the cattle that were under his care.

On the 8th of February 2024, gunmen in military uniform stormed the residence of a family at Tensungo and shot dead a seven-month-old, a two-year-old child, and their mother.

In a related development, a woman also lost her five-month-old daughter after gunmen pounced on her and killed the daughter.

Currently, about 58 people have been killed in the area since the re-emergence of the conflict in October 2024.

The area remains volatile as combatants still engage each other in gun a battle every day in the Bawku township with others attacking on the Bawku-Bolga-Tamale highway.

Good News For Ghanaian Students Studying Abroad As Foreign Affairs Ministry Begins The Reset Agenda

0

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister For Foreign Affairs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has established a special department in its diplomatic missions abroad to prioritize and cater for the needs of Ghanaian students schooling abroad.

The minister responsible for Foreign Affairs Hon Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the recent development on his social media page indicating that ‘Student Desks’ have immediately been created in 11 countries where data confirms a high number of Ghanaian students currently studying in those countries.

Some diplomatic missions where these Student Desks have been created are: Abidjan, Beijing, Belgrade, Cotonou, Havana, Lome, London, Moscow, Rabat, Rome and Ottawa.

This initiative will soon cover all diplomatic missions following this pilot phase.

Mr Ablakwa also intimated that the creation of this special department would not come at an extra cost to the Ghanaian taxpayer, neither would it require additional recruitment since the initiative relies on reassigning consular staff.

According to the minister the embassy officials responsible for this new role are to send monthly reports to the Consular and Humanitarian Affairs Bureau for onward transmission to the Foreign Minister.

The Mahama administration is determined to end the era where Ghanaian students studying abroad, particularly those on government scholarships are left stranded, neglected and frustrated when they need urgent assistance in areas such as fees facilitation, immigration support, medical emergencies, verification of academic records, housing and accommodation support, evacuations and legal aid.

I Was Heartbroken When I Was Accused Of K!lling My Mother, I Almost Took My Life When She Passed Away – Maame Serwaa Breaks Down As She Opens Up

0

Ghanaian actress Maame Serwaa has emotionally recounted the heart-breaking accusations she faced following the death of her mother.

Speaking in a recent interview with Emelia Brobbey on Okukuseku TV, the young actress revealed that instead of receiving comfort during her time of grief, she was accused of being responsible for her mother’s death.

According to Maame Serwaa, the most painful part was that some of the people making these accusations were those closest to her. She described the emotional toll it took on her, admitting that the pain and false allegations nearly pushed her to the brink of taking her own life.

“I was already devastated when my mother passed away, but the accusations broke me even more. What hurt the most was that some of the people pointing fingers at me were people I trusted,” she revealed tearfully.

She also reflected on how her mother’s passing significantly changed her life. Her mother had been her biggest support system, taking her to auditions and guiding her career from a young age. Losing her not only left an emotional void but also forced her to navigate the industry alone.

Maame Serwaa further disclosed that before her mother’s passing, she had reassured her that she wasn’t going to die anytime soon but would live to carry her grandchildren—a promise that tragically never came true.

The ceremony brought together representatives of various branches of the church, including Tesano Baptist Church, All Souls Baptist Church, Greater Works Baptist Church, Legon Baptist Church, Grace Baptist Church, Tema Baptist Church and other Christian groups.

Apart from the clergy, other notable individuals who also joined members of the church to witness the retirement and thanksgiving service included the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George  Akuffo Dampare; a former Commissioner of the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ),  Anna Bossman; Executive Secretary of the National Media Commission, George Sarpong; General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Wengam and Spokesperson of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu.

Also present were representatives of Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), Ghana AIDS Commission, Coalition of Election Observers (CODEO), Christian Council of Ghana, Scripture Union (SU) and scores of friends and members from the Christian fraternity.

Officiating Ministers led by Rev. Enoch Thompson, President of the Ghana Baptist Convention, who praised Rev. Deegbe for his humble leadership, administrative skills, teaching abilities, contribution to the growth and transformation of the church, also prayed for good health to enable him continue to offer guidance to the church.

Apart from citations and goodwill messages read in his honour from various branches, the church also presented a car and assorted gifts to him for his dedicated service.

Rev. Dr. Fred Deegbe until his retirement from active service in 2024 was ordained as a minister of the gospel in 1983 and served as a senior pastor for the Calvary Baptist Church for 34 years.

Among some of his achievements as the senior pastor of the church include the expansion and creation of the Calvary Baptist Church, which later culminated in the establishment of church groups as well as the planting of several Baptist churches through missions and evangelism in various parts of the country.

Rev. Deegbe, who holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Ghana and qualified as a lawyer from the Ghana School of Law, also received his theological training at Christian Service College, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas as well as the Baylor University Medical Center in the US.

Founder and Head Pastor of the Fountain Gate Chapel, Rev. Eastwood Anaba, in a sermon, said people, especially pastors, sometimes relinquish the work of God to others after retiring from active service.

He, however, asked Rev. Deegbe to appreciate retirement as a new phase of life to fulfil his calling in the ministry and perform other roles for the expansion of God’s kingdom, drawing examples from the scriptures about Caleb who was endowed with strength to do the work of God even in his old age.

Rev. Deegbe also thanked the church for all the support offered to him and his family in diverse ways as a minister of the church, while pledging to continue to teach, mentor pastors and the youth to be able to remain committed to the work of God.

Josephine Afua Kyerewaa Bonsu joins Black Queens squad ahead of Morocco friendly

0

Josephine Afua Kyerewaa Bonsu is a forward for Carl Zeiss Jena Josephine Afua Kyerewaa Bonsu is a forward for Carl Zeiss Jena

Newly appointed Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has announced his first squad as the team prepares to face Morocco in a friendly later this month.

While the squad remains largely unchanged from the one left by former coach Nora Häuptle, a few new faces have been introduced including one standout newcomer: Josephine Afua Kyerewaa Bonsu.

Bonsu’s inclusion has sparked some debate among Ghanaian football fans, many of whom are unfamiliar with her background.

This piece sheds light on the latest addition to the Black Queens.

Who is Josephine Afua Kyerewaa Bonsu?

Born on August 20, 1999, in Berlin, Bonsu is a German-born Ghanaian footballer who plays as a forward for Carl Zeiss Jena in the Frauen-Bundesliga.

She began her football journey with the B-Junior team of 1. FC Lübars, making 16 appearances in the North/Northeast division of the B-Juniorinnen-Bundesliga during the 2014-2015 season and scoring two goals. The following season, she featured in 16 out of 18 matches for the same team.

Bonsu’s career progressed as she joined the second women’s team of Berliner FC for the 2016-2017 season. Two years later, she was promoted to the first team.

Over three seasons, starting in September 2018, she made 29 appearances and scored 13 goals.

During that period, her team won the regional championship but narrowly missed promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga after losing to SG 99 Andernach.

In the 2021-2022 season, she played for Türkiyemspor Berlin, a local rival, where she impressed with seven goals in eight matches.

In the 2022-2023 season, Bonsu joined FC Carl Zeiss Jena and quickly made an impact, playing 19 games in the 2nd Bundesliga and scoring one goal.

The following season, she stepped up her game, scoring six goals in 22 appearances as her team finished second in the table, securing promotion to the top division, the Frauen-Bundesliga.

Bonsu and her team made their Bundesliga debut on August 31, 2024, in a 2-0 away loss to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Her impressive performances in the top flight caught the attention of then-Black Queens coach Nora Häuptle, who traveled to Germany to watch her play and persuade her to represent Ghana.

So far this season, Bonsu has made 14 Bundesliga appearances, registering one assist but is yet to score.

However, she hopes to make a strong impact with the Black Queens as she embarks on her international career.

Former NEIP CEO criticizes OSP for issuing wanted poster for Ken Ofori-Atta

0

Former Chief Executive Officer of NEIP, Kofi Ofosu Nkansah Former Chief Executive Officer of NEIP, Kofi Ofosu Nkansah

The former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has strongly condemned the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for issuing a wanted poster for former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

In a Facebook post on Monday, February 17, 2025, Nkansah criticized the OSP’s decision, arguing that it was inappropriate to declare Ofori-Atta wanted when he had been in communication with authorities through his lawyers.

He also pointed out that the former minister was reportedly undergoing a medical procedure at a hospital in the United States, making it unreasonable to expect him to abandon his treatment.

“You don’t use a national office for this when the person is collaborating with your office through his lawyers and you haven’t provided any evidence to the contrary that he is not at the said US hospital,” Nkansah wrote.

“Should he leave the procedure he is undergoing and come and die? This is really shameful, and all well-meaning Ghanaians must condemn this,” he added.

His remarks come after the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) released a poster announcing the declaration of former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, as a wanted fugitive on February 17, 2025.

The poster, bearing the seal of the OSP and the word “WANTED” inscribed in bold text, includes an image of the former minister alongside his full name, Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta.

Other details on the poster include Ken Ofori-Atta’s age, gender, eye color, hair color, complexion, and potential locations, namely, the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA).

“The suspect is wanted to answer charges related to several cases, including the Strategic Mobilization-GRA Contract, Termination of the ECG-GXC contract, National Cathedral Payments, Ambulance Procurement Contract, and Tax Refund Account Utilization,” a portion of the notice read.

The OSP’s notice follows a press conference held by Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng on February 12, 2025, in which he declared Ken Ofori-Atta a wanted person and a fugitive from justice.

During the briefing, Kissi Agyebeng emphasized that Ofori-Atta must return to Ghana immediately to face questioning.

He warned that failure to comply would result in measures to compel his return.

Akwaboah Jr. Uses Humor to Deflect Marriage Rumors

0

Akwaboah

Renowned songwriter, instrumentalist, and singer Akwaboah Jr. recently opened up about how he has managed to keep his marriage intact amid the swirling rumors and harsh public scrutiny.

The My Darling hitmaker, who married last year, revealed that he took proactive steps by preparing his wife for the inevitable chatter on social media. In a candid conversation with Amansan Krakye, he recalled, “When I got married, if you followed what transpired on social media and the discussions that came up, people said a lot of things about me.”

Akwaboah Jr. explained that by forewarning his wife about what to expect, they were able to face the rumors head-on. “The lucky thing that happened to me was that I had already advised my wife earlier to expect some of the things that happened,” he said. As the gossip began to circulate, the couple chose to observe the speculations and simply laugh it off, a strategy that allowed them to maintain their peace of mind and protect their relationship.

This approach not only highlights the strength of their bond but also serves as a reminder that humor can be a powerful tool against adversity. In an era where every move is amplified on social media, Akwaboah Jr.’s perspective offers a refreshing counter-narrative. He emphasized that marriage, much like any other relationship, requires conscious effort and the willingness to take time off from the noise of the public sphere. “If there’s a need for us to go chill, we go out, have fun, and later come home to sleep. We need to do whatever it takes to protect our marriage from breaking down,” he added.

In a world where public figures often find themselves battling both fame and personal challenges, Akwaboah Jr.’s pragmatic and light-hearted approach serves as both an inspiration and a testament to the enduring power of love and mutual support.

Govt officials must be ready for accountability – Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has addressed the growing anticipation around government appointments, warning that it’s not just about recognition, but also about the responsibility of delivering results for the people.

Speaking during an engagement with the Ghanaian community in Ethiopia on Monday, February 17, John Mahama pointed out that while many are eager to know who has received a “green letter,” such appointments come with significant responsibilities and high expectations.

“Those of us in leadership must lead by example, we must be prepared to be held accountable, for taking the public trust and as I have told everybody, if you accept to serve in the public sector, then you must be prepared to answer to the people because it is the people who took you there, you serve at their pleasure.

“The green letter comes with a lot of responsibility and expectation and I have said that while we hold those who came before us accountable, we should remember that we are also going to be held accountable.” he stated.

He added that, the amendment of the constitution along with the stabilization of the economy and creating opportunities for the youth as soon as possible is one of the key things that he is going to look at with urgency and that, if he is unable to complete the task before him, he is determined to lay the foundation to put Ghana on the right track.

“So amending the constitution, holding people accountable for the public trust and making sure that we stabilize the economy and create the opportunity for our young people to work as quickly as possible, is the task ahead of us. We may not be able to complete that process but at least I am determined that we lay the foundation, and put Ghana on the right track.”

WFP, KOICA to empower 15,000 youth in smart farming solutions

Accra, Feb. 17, GNA – The World Food Programme (WFP) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) have set out to empower 15,000 Ghanaian youth with digital skills and tools to build resilience in food systems and improve livelihoods.

The Youth Economic Empowerment through Digitalisation for Resilience in Food and Nutrition Security and Improved Livelihoods project is expected to empower beneficiaries to improve nutrition, develop food security monitoring system, and support the digitisation of Ghana’s School Feeding Programme.

KOICA contributed US9.3 million dollars to the Project, which will be implemented within the next five years, a project brief shared with the Ghana News Agency said on Monday.

The project will be implemented in 56 districts and six regions, including Upper West, Upper East, Northern, Savannah, and Greater Accra.

It is expected to deploy mobile technologies, precision farming systems, and digital platforms to promote the adoption of smart agricultural practices and encourage healthy lifestyles.

Ms Aurore Rusiga, the WFP Country Director to Ghana, said the empowerment of Ghana’s youth, who made up about 38 per cent of the population, was crucial for the country’s socio-economic growth.

She said the project would deliberately focus on women, to make up 60 per cent of the target beneficiaries, while five per cent would be persons with disability.

“Through this initiative, we aim to equip Ghana’s youth with the digital skills and tools they need to enhance agricultural productivity, strengthen food systems, improve livelihoods, and secure sustainable employment opportunities,” Ms Rusiga said.

Mr Park Kyongsig, the Korean Ambassador to Ghana, said Korea was committed to Ghana’s sustainable development and had, over the years, contributed to projects to help the country build resilience.

He said Ghana’s land and water resources presented an opportunity for the country to build food resilience and pledged the readiness of Korea to continuously support Ghana’s developmental agenda.

Mr Edmond Moukala, the Director of UNESCO at the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator, commended the WFP and KOICA for initiating the project and emphasised the need for collective action and partnership to build food security.

“This is an inspiring and visionary project,” he said.

Ghana’s early exit from IMF programme could destabilize economy, according to experts

0

Speaking on Joy FM on Monday, 17 February 2025, the Finance and Economics Professor at the University of Ghana stressed that Ghana’s economic struggles are more severe than when the country initially sought IMF support.

“We are an economy that is struggling. We are in a worse situation than we were when we went to the IMF,” he stated, urging the government to consider extending the programme if necessary.

He further warned that an early exit could send negative signals to investors, who prioritise long-term economic stability.

“When people are investing, they want stability for the long term, not just one or two years. Otherwise, those considering long-term commitments may hesitate,” he noted.

Prof. Bokpin highlighted Ghana’s restricted access to international capital markets until 2027, complicating the country’s economic recovery. He cited warnings from the World Bank, which has advised Ghana against rushing back to the market, pointing out that countries that undergo debt restructuring typically need three to four years to regain investor confidence.

Another critical concern raised by the economist is Ghana’s inefficient tax system. He revealed that only 41% of the economy contributes 86% of tax revenue, leaving a substantial portion of economic activities untaxed.

“A large chunk of our economy is not taxable. The bigger percentage of our economy contributes just about 40% of tax revenue,” he explained.

While acknowledging government efforts to enhance tax education and administration, he recommended properly taxing high-net-worth individuals, which he estimated could generate up to $160 million annually.

He also cautioned against overburdening compliant taxpayers with additional levies, warning, “If we are not careful, we will kill the chicken that lays the egg.”

Prof. Bokpin’s concerns come as Ghana continues implementing fiscal measures under its $3 billion IMF programme, initiated in 2023. While the government remains optimistic about meeting its fiscal targets through improved tax collection and expenditure controls, the economist insists that a more strategic approach—possibly extending the IMF programme—would be in Ghana’s best interest.

“The idea of reviewing the programme with the possibility of an extension should not be off the table,” he concluded.

George Britton questions Kuami Eugene’s visibility after Lynx exit

George Britton has expressed concerns over Kuami Eugene’s visibility since his departure from Lynx Entertainment.

The UK-based showbiz expert, recognised for his work as a media personality, talent manager, and entrepreneur, believes the singer needs a solid team to maintain his influence in the industry.

“Kuami Eugene has been in the industry for a while. He knows what to do and has built relationships,” he said in an interview cited by MyNewsGh.com.

“But if he wants to work effectively, he needs to form a strong team—one with a good network and members who have key industry connections.”

Britton noted a decline in the singer’s promotional strategies, referencing the recent release of a song on his birthday.

“Back when he was with Lynx, we would have seen more updates about his release. At Lynx, there were people ensuring the public was always informed about what Kuami Eugene was doing. Now, I don’t know who is on his team or what they’re up to,” he told Amansan Krakye.

Highlighting the importance of visibility, he added, “If I don’t see Kuami Eugene posting about his new music on Instagram, and I don’t see anything elsewhere either, it shows just how crucial a good team is.”

‘Godfred Dame as an Attorney General brought no honour to the office’ – Beatrice Annan

Presidential Staffer Beatrice Annan has asserted that former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame failed to carry himself with the grace and honor expected of someone in such a high office.

According to her, Dame’s tenure as Attorney General will be remembered as a period of embarrassment, not only for the office but for the legal profession as a whole.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on Monday, February 17, 2025, she accused him of manipulating the judicial system, alleging that the courts became a safe haven for politically motivated cases during his time in office.

“I think if there is any Attorney General who never carried himself with the grace and honor that an Attorney General should, it is Godfred Dame. He will go down in the history of this country as an Attorney General who brought no honor to the office.

“In fact, he was a total embarrassment to all lawyers. And I was shocked that Godfred Dame could actually have the temerity to speak. Well, I don’t even know how to describe this, but it shows you the level of impunity and the low standards we’ve had to deal with over the last eight years,” she remarked.

The presidential staffer further argued that the problems under Dame’s leadership were not just confined to the judicial system but also affected the business climate in the country.

“Godfred Dame is a very dishonest person who should not have been an Attorney General in the Fourth Republic. He has taken our jurisprudence backward and has practically messed up not only the judicial system but also the business climate due to numerous unethical practices.

“The courts became a safe haven where the merit of a case no longer mattered. He was so comfortable, whether by calling judges on the phone, visiting them in their offices, or engaging in practices that were new and novel to us as legal practitioners,” she stated.

Turning to the issue of politically motivated cases, Beatrice Annan clarified that her objections were not part of a campaign to exonerate NDC officials.

She cited the case of The Republic vs. Ernest Thompson, where Godfred Dame charged Thompson with over 20 counts, only for the court to strike out 17 of those charges as frivolous and unsupported by evidence.

“The court itself struck out over 17 of those charges as frivolous, baseless, and lacking evidence,” she explained.

In her opinion, Dame misused his prosecutorial powers, targeting individuals who expressed opposing political views.

“I’m sure if I were a public officer, simply calling out Godfred Dame would have subjected me to some charges,” she asserted.

Meanwhile, Godfred Dame has criticized the John Dramani Mahama-led administration for what he describes as a deliberate strategy to clear its officials of wrongdoing by discontinuing some high-profile criminal cases.

Speaking at a press conference on February 14, 2025, Dame accused the government of orchestrating a calculated effort to withdraw major criminal cases, particularly those involving former government appointees, to absolve them of any wrongdoing.

“These developments irresistibly point to only one conclusion—a calculated, preconceived ploy on the part of the NDC to wipe out all criminal cases pending against its leading members and officials in the John Mahama government,” he stated.

Africa must seek self-reliance to avert donor fatigue

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

Following President Donald Trump’s sweeping executive order shutting off the funding for foreign aid programmes, President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana will invest in increasing food production as a response to the suspension.

This suspension is expected to have far-reaching economic effects across Africa, with Ghana facing a significant revenue shortfall of US$156million.

For instance, US$78.2million of the shortfall will impact crucial health programmes including malaria prevention, maternal and child health, family planning and HIV/AIDS interventions.

Speaking at the town hall forum of the Munich Security Conference in Germany last Friday, President Mahama expressed concern over the potential impact but advocated that Africans take steps to mitigate the effects by increasing local food production and securing alternative sources of funding.

The Munich Security Conference is an international security summit held annually in Munich, Germany. The gathering provides a venue for international decision-makers and diplomats to debate ideas and address security concerns.

The conference initially provided Germany, the U.S. and other NATO member-countries a forum to discuss and debate Western policy during the Cold War. President John Dramani Mahama was in Germany to attend the Munich Security Conference.

The president also serves as Chairperson of the Tana Forum and will lead a Tana/MSC side event on ‘Deepening Global Fragmentation: Implications for Africa’s Peace and Security’.

While in Munich, President Mahama was scheduled to have bilateral discussions with a number of world leaders and organisations on a broad range of issues, mostly centring on mutual cooperation between Ghana and the respective countries.

The President has signalled his government’s resolve to invest in increasing food production, ensuring food security amid signs of less aid coming in from major donors such as the United States’ due to its new foreign policy direction.

USAID was first created by President John F. Kennedy in a 1961 executive order; Congress passed a law in 1998 to make it an “independent establishment” like others in the Cabinet.

Multiple administrations, Democratic and Republican alike, built USAID into an institution that has helped save millions of lives around the world, promoted U.S. interests in remote corners of the globe and employed thousands of Americans.

Ghanaian female weightlifter Marie Agbah-Hughes has revealed that lack of financial support and injuries have been among the biggest challenges in her weightlifting endeavors.

She explained that despite being a member of Ghana’s women’s weightlifting team, she does not receive monetary aid from the state and has had to fund everything herself.

The female weightlifter noted that her consistent lifting of equipment has resulted in injuries unrelated to the sport, which sometimes hinder her progress.

“Weightlifting is a repetitive sport. The same movements are repeated over and over to fine-tune techniques, ensuring safety while lifting and avoiding injury. I’ve had injuries unrelated to weightlifting, such as an accident that forced me to take a break and start over,” she said while speaking on Sports Check, aired on GhanaWeb TV.

Agbah-Hughes also called on state institutions and prominent personalities to provide financial support and other forms of assistance.

“So, it hasn’t been the smoothest journey. As a national team member, I haven’t received financial support. It’s been difficult paying for everything weightlifting-related.

“Representing Ghana on an international platform is an honor, but it would be nice to have support. Unfortunately, I haven’t received any support up until this day,” she added.

Police deny entry to Adutwum, Kokofu, others

0

A heavy security presence at the Council of State re-election in the Ashanti Region created dramatic scenes as prominent political figures, including former Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and former Bantama MP, Henry Kwabena Kokofu, were turned away by police for lacking accreditation.

The others included Kwadaso MP, Kingsley Nyarko, and the former MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong who were among those barred from entering the main auditorium, where the voting was taking place.

Police officers at the venue stood firm, insisting that only accredited individuals—specifically assembly members eligible to vote—were permitted inside.

They, however, complied with the directive and left without incident, Citi FM’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent, Hafiz Tijani reported.

Security at the polling station remained tight, with barriers mounted and a water cannon on standby, signaling police preparedness to maintain order.

Early on, police in the Ashanti Region arrested one person following chaos that erupted on the grounds.

Meanwhile, Saaka Abuba has emerged victorious in the North East Region’s Council of State election, securing his position as the region’s representative after a closely contested rerun.

The election, held on Monday, February 17, 2025, saw Abuba clinch 7 out of 12 votes, defeating his closest contender, Asabigi San Malunga, who polled 5 votes.

The rerun was necessitated after the initial election ended in a deadlock, with both main contenders securing an equal number of votes—6 each. This tie prompted the Electoral Commission to organise a second round of voting to determine a clear winner.

The brief but decisive voting session took place under tight security and strict adherence to electoral guidelines, ensuring a transparent and peaceful process.

In addition to the North East Region, a re-run of the election was also organized in the Ashanti Region after the initial process was disrupted, resulting in no clear winner being declared.
