Walewale MP condemns alleged security brutalities during curfew hours

0

The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Abdul Kabiru Tiah Mahama, has accused security personnel in the area of extortion, human rights abuses, and unlawful home invasions during curfew hours.

He questioned the rationale behind the curfew and condemned the alleged misconduct of security forces, including unauthorized searches, looting, and brutality against residents.

Speaking to Citi News, Tiah Mahama criticized the excessive use of force, stressing that security operations must be conducted professionally and within the confines of the law.

He, therefore, called on the government to ensure accountability while urging residents to cooperate with security personnel to maintain peace in Walewale.

“The conduct of the security personnel on the ground gives us rooms to be concerned about the whole exercise being carried out by the personnel because the people are not so happy. Of course, you will not be happy where you have the military evading civilian space, that kind of uncertainty, anxiety, and if you like, fear and scare that that will cause.

“The personnel actions on the ground and the reports I am hearing are not encouraging. First and foremost, there are reported cases of the military persons going into the houses of people unannounced and then looting items from them. That is not the work of the security in that community. Their essence is to pick up miscreants, to pick up criminals. You don’t go looting property, you don’t go extorting money from residents. You don’t go vandalising power and properties of residents.”

Hearts brush aside Young Apostles  … charged for security breaches

Accra Hearts of Oak kept their Ghana Premier League title hopes alive when they recorded a 2-0 victory over visiting Young Apostles at the University of Ghana Stadium on Saturday.

Having been dumped out of the MTN FA Cup by lower division side, Golden Kick, via penalties, the Phobians showed their seriousness from the start, registering goals from a header from defender Michael Awuah Mensah and an own goal by Rahman Rulf Abdul.

Hearts, unbeaten in their last seven league games, were on the offensive for virtually the entire game, forcing their guest to do more defensive duties.

After squandering some fine opportunities in front of goal, the fans had something to cheer about when Awuah headed home a corner from Mohammed Hussein on 43 minutes.

They had other opportunities but Issah and Yussif Ramzy failed to find a target.

Three minutes into the second half, a cross from the right side was flicked on by Issah, coming off the foot of Abdul to beat goalkeeper Zulka Masawudu in post for Apostles for the second goal.

Emmanuel Fosu Kyei, Daniel Lomotey, and Mathias Van Amegbe came close to reducing the deficit for the visitors but their efforts were dealt with by goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.

The win and celebration aftermath, however, landed the Phobians in trouble for breaching match day safety protocols.

Hearts was charged with breaches of Article (8) of the GFA Enhanced Matchday Safety and Security Protocols, 2025 and Article 34 (6) (d) of the GFA Ghana Premier League Regulations, 2019, following the clash.

Hearts was cited to have allowed unaccredited persons, specifically its supporters to the Safe Zone to celebrate the win.

The action, according to the FA constitutes misconduct and brings the game into disrepute.

The Phobians have until tomorrow to respond to the charges.

John Mahama notes that Ghana may be able to end the quarrel in West Africa

0

During John Mahama’s visit to Mali, the Ghanaian president met with the president of Mali, Assimi Goita, to discuss the insecurities in West Africa.

He essentially stated that trust between the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) must be restored.

“We will do everything possible to restore this trust,” he said, as he spoke about the tensions that caused Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali to exit their original regional bloc, ECOWAS, to form a bloc of their own.

“I’m an old face because I have been president before, I’ve been chairman of ECOWAS before, but again, I’m a new face… and so Ghana is prepared to play the role of a bridge between our two group the ECOWAS and the AES,” Mahama stated to the press after a closed-door meeting with his Malian counterpart.

“Everybody knows the historic relations that have existed between Ghana and Mali since the period of our ex-presidents, Keita and Dr. Kwame Nkrumah… and so I came on a friendly visit, and also to thank President Goita for allowing Prime Minister Maiga to visit Ghana when I was being inaugurated as president,” he stated, as per a press release from Ghana’s presidency.

In light of the cooperation between both countries, the two leaders discussed restoring the Mali-Ghana cooperation committee, which was last met in 2011.

Additionally, the two presidents spoke about increasing bilateral trade, particularly by developing the southern corridor, which makes it easier for commodities to move between Ghana and Mali.

To make these exchanges more effective, the president of Ghana emphasized the need to streamline customs procedures and upgrade infrastructure.

The three military-led West African states of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso officially withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on January 29, 2025.

They revealed their intention to leave their long-standing regional organization a year ago, citing the bloc’s subservience to former colonial powers and inability to back their counterterrorism activities.

Furthermore, for a little more than a year, the AES has been attempting to eliminate any traces of Western influence from their country. This involves renaming monuments after colonial names and cutting military connections with France.

Fidelity Bank Ghana wins Best Financial inclusion Bank in West Africa

0

Fidelity Bank Ghana, the nation’s largest privately owned indigenous bank, has been crowned “Best Bank in Financial Inclusion in West Africa” at the prestigious 15th Africa Bank 4.0 Summit and Awards – West Africa, held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra.

This significant accolade recognizes the bank’s pioneering efforts in expanding financial access to millions of previously unbanked and underbanked Ghanaians over the past decade.

“This award is a testament to the tireless efforts of our team and partners, particularly our agents, and the unflinching commitment we have shown to bridging the financial gap in Ghana over the years,” said Julian Opuni, Managing Director of Fidelity Bank Ghana. “We have always believed that banking should be inclusive.

“Our innovative products and strategic partnerships have not only expanded our customer base but have also driven economic growth by empowering individuals and communities. This award reinforces our commitment to support every Ghanaian’s financial journey—truly, we are here for your journey.”

The award follows a decade of groundbreaking initiatives, beginning with a stark realization: in 2011, a staggering 70% of the Ghanaian population was unbanked. Fidelity Bank, recognizing this critical gap, embarked on a transformative journey to bring banking services to the underserved.

“We understood that traditional banking models were failing to reach a significant portion of the population,” explained Dr. David Okyere, Head of Agency Banking at Fidelity Bank. “We needed to break down barriers and bring banking services to the people, rather than expecting people to come to the bank.”

In his remarks during the award ceremony, Dr. Okyere expressed gratitude to the CEO, the Board, and Management of Fidelity Bank for their unwavering support in achieving this milestone. He dedicated the award to the hardworking Inclusive and Agency Banking teams, whose dedication, commitment, and resilience have been instrumental in overcoming the challenges associated with driving financial inclusion.

This vision led to the development of the Smart Account, a revolutionary product requiring minimal documentation, and the establishment of a robust Agency Banking network, making banking services accessible in every corner of the country. Through partnerships with organizations like Ghana Post and Melcom, Fidelity Bank established a vast network of agent points of about 8,000 bringing banking closer to the people.

Overcoming initial skepticism and dispelling myths about banking accessibility, Fidelity Bank successfully onboarded over 1.5 million previously unbanked and underbanked individuals. The bank’s innovative approach, including the development of the Smart Account and the expansion of its Agency Banking network, has set a new standard for financial inclusion in Ghana.

Fidelity Bank remains committed to further expanding its financial inclusion initiatives. “Our journey is far from over,” Samuel Abbey Dodoo, Head of Inclusive Banking remarked. “We are determined to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible in inclusive banking. By leveraging technology, forging strategic partnerships, and investing in our Agents, we will ensure that every Ghanaian has the opportunity to access quality financial services, empowering them to build a brighter future.”

Looking ahead, Fidelity Bank remains committed to further enhancing its financial inclusion initiatives. The bank is exploring new avenues such as the introduction of the Smart Loan, a digital micro-loan requiring no collateral or documentation. Additionally, there are plans to explore micro-insurance options, further ensuring that every Ghanaian, regardless of their economic status, has access to comprehensive financial services.

Fidelity Bank is also expanding digital financial literacy programs, developing innovative products for underserved segments, and strengthening its partnerships to drive sustainable financial growth for all Ghanaians.

You had no business driving President Mahama

Ibrahim Mahama [L] and Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah Ibrahim Mahama [L] and Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah

Outspoken media personality, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, has lambasted businessman Ibrahim Mahama, the brother of President John Mahama, for driving the president during his official duties.

According to Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, such an act is entirely inappropriate and unacceptable, adding that it should not be encouraged.

His comments follow the circulation of videos on social media showing Ibrahim Mahama driving the president during his visit to flood-stricken areas in the Volta Region.

Following the video’s circulation, some Ghanaians took to social media to express their disapproval of the act.

Commenting on his show, For The Records, monitored by GhanaWeb, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah stated that Ibrahim Mahama had no business driving the president.

“If you are a wealthy individual, stay in your space and enjoy your wealth. We know that, by all means, you will benefit from the government and exert some control, but let it not be so blatant. We don’t care—just let us have our peace. Take a step back. Does it align with any proper governance structure that the President of the Republic is visiting a place and his brother is the one driving him? Are you people okay? We have reduced our governance to the lowest level, and nobody sees anything wrong with it because it involves Ibrahim.

“The president has not fewer than three drivers. The practice has been that, ordinarily, the president’s driver is not even supposed to be driving him. But from Atta Mills through Mahama to Akufo-Addo, they have enrolled their private drivers into the service. If you think Ibrahim Mahama is the one who should be driving you, let us know and officially enroll him as your chauffeur. Then we can have official records stating that Ibrahim Mahama is the new chauffeur of the president. What is all this?” he queried.
