Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore

Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore, has called on the embattled former Managing Director of SIC Insurance, Hollistar Duah-Yentumi, to cease her legal pursuit to stay in office.

According to the legislator, she might end up losing the battle due to the political change of office. Hence, she should discuss her exit and bow out from the office.

In a Facebook post on February 6, 2025, he stated, “Somebody get to this MD & ask her to relax. What was she thinking? That NDC would win elections & keep her at post??… I honestly don’t know where to place a CEO appointed by the NPP who is holding on to his or her post after your appointing authority has handed over power.

“The NDC must & they will pay you off! So, my fellow Ghanaian, pack, negotiate for all payments due to you & leave space for the NDC to have their field day.

“Next time, if any Ghanaian becomes a CEO, respect the political space that made you, your men at work & the cause of the Ghanaian. The balancing act is on you!”

On February 4, 2025, Duah-Yentumi filed a lawsuit against SIC Insurance and its newly appointed Managing Director, James Agyenim-Boateng, after President John Dramani Mahama’s announcement of Agyenim-Boateng as her successor.

In her suit, Duah-Yentumi claims that her employment contract guarantees her position until January 2028, unless terminated by the board or shareholders under certain conditions.

Women’s economic empowerment key to Ghana’s growth – Stakeholders advocate

0

Kathleen Flynn-Dapaah, Director of the Ghana Programme at the High Commission of Canada Kathleen Flynn-Dapaah, Director of the Ghana Programme at the High Commission of Canada

Seth Twum-Akwaboah, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), has commended the Women’s Innovation for Sustainable Enterprises (WISE) project initiative for its transformative impact on women entrepreneurs in Ghana.

He emphasized the importance of women’s economic empowerment during the grand close-out ceremony of the project in Accra on February 5, 2025.

“When rights are realized, growth is imminent,” he said.

He highlighted the significance of WISE in equipping women with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to break barriers, expand their businesses, and contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s economy.

He also called on the government to institutionalize policies that promote women-specific entrepreneurship and address challenges such as limited access to finance and market entry barriers.

“Women’s economic empowerment hinges on equal access to resources, finance, and leadership opportunities. Strong mentorship networks and industry linkages foster sustainable enterprises, while skills development in technical, digital, and financial areas drives business resilience and innovation.

“However, lasting growth requires policies that protect and promote women’s rights, ensuring a fair and inclusive economic landscape. While today marks the official close-out of this project, it is by no means the end of the journey.

“If we are to sustain the momentum and ensure continued growth, there must be deliberate policy actions to institutionalize women’s economic empowerment. I take this opportunity to call on the government to design and implement women-specific entrepreneurial policies that enhance productivity and competitiveness.

“These policies should address challenges such as limited access to finance, market entry barriers, and structural inequalities that hinder women-owned businesses from thriving,” he added.

Other key speakers at the event echoed similar sentiments. Constant Tchona, Country Director of Plan International Ghana, described WISE as a gender-transformative initiative that tackled the root causes of inequality and economic exclusion for women.

He noted that over 14,000 women and 1,600 men were impacted through financial inclusion programmes, training in climate-smart agriculture, and community-based business hubs.

Kathleen Flynn-Dapaah, Director of the Ghana Programme at the High Commission of Canada, underscored Canada’s commitment to gender equality through its Feminist International Assistance Policy (FIAP).

She applauded the resilience of the women entrepreneurs, particularly those who persevered through the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event celebrated the legacy of WISE, emphasizing that while the project may have come to an end, its impact will resonate for generations.

The speakers urged all stakeholders, government, private sector, and civil society, to sustain and expand initiatives that foster women’s empowerment and inclusive development.

The WISE Project, launched in 2020, was implemented by Plan International Ghana and Plan International Canada, with support from Global Affairs Canada’s Innovation for Women’s Economic Empowerment in Ghana (IWEEG) initiative.

It focused on providing women with the tools and opportunities needed to succeed in business, ultimately reinforcing the belief that investing in women is an investment in the nation’s future.

Women’s AFCON 2025: GFA schedules TOUGH friendly match for Black Queens in Casablanca

0

The Ghana Football Association has scheduled a tough international friendly match for Ghana Black Queens in February.

The FA has arranged an international friendly match between Black Queens and Morocco on Friday, February 21 2025 at the Pere Jego Stadium in Casablanca.

This encounter is part of the February FIFA window and serves as a crucial preparation for the upcoming Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament in July.

The team, under the guidance of new head coach Kim Lars Björkegren, is focused on enhancing their performance and securing a positive result to boost their chances of advancing in the WAFCON.

The friendly also provides Coach Björkegren with an opportunity to assess the current squad and newly invited players. The Black Queens have been drawn into Group C of the WAFCON, alongside defending champions South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania.

With the tournament just around the corner, this friendly match against Morocco will be an essential gauge of the team’s readiness.

Bawumia has already done it!

Yayra Koku, Director General of the National Identification Authority (NIA) Yayra Koku, Director General of the National Identification Authority (NIA)

New Director General of the National Identification Authority (NIA) Yayra Koku, has been heavily mocked by Ghanaians for exposing his ignorance on the value and functions of the Ghana Card.

In a Facebook post Thursday, Yayra Koku boldly announced his plans to link the Ghana Card to mobile money and bank accounts. He also added his plans to turn the Ghana Card into driver’s license, as well as a proposal for easy passport application with the Ghana Card.

However, shortly after making the post, Yayra Koku’s post attracted comments from a number of Ghanaians, who exposed what they called his ignorance of what the Ghana Card already does.

The chip-embedded Ghana Card, which captures the biometric details of holders, has already been linked with bank and momo accounts, as well as the databases of the GRA, making the Ghana Card numbers also their tax identification (TIN) numbers.

The Ghana Card has also been linked with the DVLA, the National Health Insurance Scheme, Controller and Accountant General Department (CAGD) to control public payroll, as well as SSNIT.

Respondents spared no time in reminding Yayra Koko the volume of work former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia did, in spearheading the integration of the Ghana Card into Ghana’s financial and other national identity systems.

“Dr. Bawumia have done it already. It seems like you are a foreigner in Ghana. Every Ghanaian with Ghana card has long been linked to their momo and account. Anyone who go to the bank to withdraw or deposit money can’t do that without Ghana Card,” wrote Eunice Debrah, in a direct response the new NIA CEO.

Many other comments reiterated Eunice Debrah’s post, and expressed shock that the new CEO of the NIA was unaware of the status of the present status and functions of the Ghana Card.

A number of contributors sarcastically told the new CEO that he and his party, the NDC, were so busy attacking Dr. Bawumia and basterdising the Ghana Card that they were not aware of what was happening.

State to recall fifth prosecution witness in Gyakye Quayson’s trial

0

An Accra High Court has granted a motion for the prosecution in the trial of James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North, to recall a witness pursuant to section 79 of the Evidence Act.

Madam Esi Dentaa Yankah, the Principal State Attorney (PSA), said the basis for the motion was that Latif Oshenu, the fifth prosecution witness in the ongoing trial, during his cross-examination, notified the court of a page that was omitted in an exhibit, which he had tendered into evidence.

The MP for Assin North is facing five charges; Deceit of Public officer, forgery of passport or travel certificates, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury, and false declaration for office.

He has since pleaded not guilty and has been granted bail.

Madam Yankah said the witness sought to refer to that omitted page but was unable to do so.

The prosecution sought for the witness to be recalled for the complete document to be placed before the court to enable him to refer to it as he sought to do during his testimony.

She prayed that the court should exercise its discretion in their favour because without that the said exhibit in its current form would be incomplete.

“We submit that the complete exhibit P is what will enable the trial court to do justice in the case rather than the court referring to a clearly incomplete document, the construction of which might affect the trial judge’s ability to access the absent page or otherwise,” she added.

The prosecution said a copy of the said exhibit had been attached to the affidavit in support of the motion bearing in mind that exhibit P before the court was a copy of the document that the witness tendered.

“We submit that these are exceptional circumstances, which warrant the recall of a witness,” she said.

Tsatsu Tsikata, Counsel for Mr Quayson, said: “We indicated in our notice in response what we intend to do. We have not seen the original documents, so we are not opposed.”

He said he just observed that when the State Attorney referred to a clearly incomplete document, that was what they put in evidence.

It was not as if somebody had changed the document that they put out before this court.

The court, presided over by Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh, said the omitted document was the Parliamentary nomination form.

She said the prosecution had to have the original document tendered attached to the application as mandated by the rules of the court.

The Judge said it should be noted that the prosecution had not followed the orders of the court to provide the accused with certain documents.

“The order is made again so that the prosecution provides the accused with those documents before the next adjourned date on February 12,” she added.

Gospel artiste, Diana Asamoah Gospel artiste, Diana Asamoah

Popular gospel musician and staunch New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporter, Evangelist Diana Asamoah, has expressed her interest in securing a political appointment under President John Dramani Mahama’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

Speaking on her popular *Akoko Abon* show on Angel FM, the celebrated gospel artiste, known for her unwavering support for the NPP, stated that President Mahama’s leadership is for all Ghanaians, irrespective of political affiliation.

“Mahama is here for all of us. I always say there is no money with NDC or NPP’s name on it. So, if the NPP comes to power, I will spend Ghanaians money because it belongs to all of us. If the NDC comes to power, I will do the same. If you look at the Ghanaian cedi, neither NDC nor NPP is written on it. President Akufo-Addo’s or John Mahama’s names are not written on any money,” she said.

Evangelist Diana Asamoah, famous for her hit song ‘Anopa Wim,” added that she has no issue with individuals supporting either the NDC or NPP when they are in power.

She revealed that she is waiting for the NDC government to settle into office before approaching President Mahama to discuss a potential political role.

Specifically, she expressed her desire for the president to establish a Ministry of Paternity Leave and appoint her as its minister.

“Since they (NDC) have returned to power, I am waiting for them to finish getting their affairs in order so I can go to President John Mahama and ask him to appoint me as the Minister for Paternity Leave, since he has not appointed anyone for that sector yet.,” he said.

Despite her interest in collaborating with the NDC government, Evangelist Diana Asamoah reaffirmed her loyalty to the NPP, describing it as her favorite political party.

“The NPP is my favourite party; I will never leave it. I am choosing the NPP. But I will support any government leading Ghana,” she said.

Addressing critics who suggested she insulted former President Nana Akufo-Addo following his exit from office, she dismissed such calls, stating, “It is not sensible to insult the elderly; such actions have serious consequences. If you want to live a good life, do not insult your elders.”

Evangelist Diana Asamoah played a significant role as a campaigner for the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and continues to be one of the party’s most vocal supporters.

NPP backbenchers educated but behaving like uneducated

0

Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip, Richard Acheampong Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip, Richard Acheampong

The Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip, Richard Acheampong, has strongly criticized some minority backbenchers in Parliament, accusing them of exhibiting unruly behaviour during proceedings.

According to Mr. Acheampong, while the NPP MPs seated at the back of the Chamber are highly educated—comprising lawyers, engineers, and former Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), their conduct in Parliament often contradicts their professional backgrounds.

“Only God knows the kind of leadership they provided when they were heading these institutions,” he remarked, expressing concern over what he described as their unparliamentary behaviour.

His comments were in reaction to a viral video circulating on social media in which one of the NPP backbenchers was heard making derogatory remarks towards NDC MP for Klottey Korle Constituency, Zenator Agyemang-Rawlings.

In the video, the MP told Dr. Agyemang-Rawlings to “sit down” while referencing her father, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, as a “murderer.”

Describing the incident as unfortunate and unacceptable, Acheampong condemned the use of vulgar language in Parliament, stressing that such remarks should not come from an “honourable member.”

“Why should the sins of a father be visited upon the son or daughter?” the Bia East MP questioned.

He made these remarks during an interview with Mac-Jerry Osei Agyemang on Accra-based Neat FM on Thursday, February 6, 2025.

Akufo-Addo’s gov’t didn’t deliberately inflict hardship on the Ghanaian people

0

Former finance minister, Dr. Amin Adam Former finance minister, Dr. Amin Adam

Former finance minister Dr Amin Adam has explained that the previous government did not intentionally inflict pain on the people of Ghana.

He was answering questions on the ballooning debts of the country that forced the government to do a restructuring when he made this known.

Dr Amin Adam said, “There is no government that will deliberately inflict pain on its people, especially in a democracy where the same government will want to retain power and continue to implement its programs.”.

He argued that some of the challenges Ghana is faced with were not caused internally but rather owed to some external factors.

To him, Ghana has done well with its recovery from the external shocks comparatively.

“Some of these challenges we are faced with some of them are attributed to external factors, and you have travelled around the world, you have participated in IMF programs and world Bank programs, you have read their documents, and even in the United States of America and even in Britain, their economies haven’t recovered as much as we have recovered because they are still affected by the same external factors that we were conflicted with,” he explained.

Adding that, “You’ll notice that at the time we had COVID, our president was very clear that we needed to do everything to protect human lives because you cannot bring lives back but you can bring the economy back. So we had to take very difficult decisions, including borrowing, and don’t forget that every government borrows,” he said on Accra-based Joy News.

ORAL will submit its report to me next week

0

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the Operation Recover All Loot Committee (ORAL) will submit a report on their activities since its establishment next week.

The president said after receiving the report, he will forward the same for the various institutions responsible for investigating corruption and corruption-related offences for further action.

He noted that he remains committed not only to constructing roads and schools, but also to establishing a brighter future for our children, the next generation, and all posterity.

He was, however, quick to add that he cannot do that without being accountable to the people who voted the National Democratic Congress (NDC) into office.

In achieving this, President Mahama announced plans to implement a very strict system of accountability and come out with a code of conduct for persons who occupy positions of trust.

He served notice that he will not only go after corrupt officials of the previous government but also those of his administration would be held accountable.

“We are not going to pursue only members of the past regime to account to the people of Ghana. We are going to pursue our own people and make sure they are held accountable to the people of Ghana. So even as we investigate those who have just left office and we carry out Operation Retrieve All the Loot, those who are current should also know that they will be held to the same standard as we are holding the past regime.

Next week, the ORAL Committee that I set up is going to present its report to me, and I will forward it to the investigative organisations to start their investigations against people who have misappropriated resources of this nation.”

The president made the remarks in Cape Coast on Thursday, February 6, 2025, as part of his ‘Thank You’ tour in the Central Region.”

ghana news Deliver your best to Ghanaians – GPCC to govt appointees

0

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has charged appointees of the new government to deliver their best in order to live up to the trust reposed in them.

It said as stewards, they should serve with humility and diligence.

“I want to let them know that leadership is when you are put in a position of trust. So you are given authority and you are a steward.

“So they should bear in mind that they are stewards for the people of Ghana. The people of Ghana have given them responsibility to lead our nation so they should do the best they can,” the First Vice President of the GPCC, Bishop Gordon Kisseih, said.

Conference

Bishop Kisseih was speaking at the opening of the 2025 GPCC Heads of Churches and Organisations Conference at the Pentecost Convention Centre (PCC) at Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region last Wednesday.

The event was on the theme: “Shining Our Stars in a Perverse World”.

The annual event brought together members of the Christian association from across the length and breadth of the country.

The conference is, among others, used to discuss the things of God, encourage and strengthen the rank and file, and pray for leaders and the nation.

Bishop Kisseih, who is the Founder of the Light International Church, said once the appointees had done well, Ghanaians would assess them over the four years and reward them by returning them to office.

Moreover, he said God would reward them if they were faithful in the work that had been assigned to them.

Disturbance

Commenting on post-election disturbances, he said peace was not just for a period as it was during the election but was a continuous process.

“We called on all Ghanaians for peace before the elections and all Ghanaians heeded that call.

“We want to remind Ghanaians again that peace is not just for a period.

Peace must be continual. It should be continuous.

So I want to encourage every person to ensure that even if you have grievances, let’s use peaceful means of addressing those grievances,” he emphasised.
Bishop Kisseih, therefore, reminded Ghanaians to continue to uphold the peace the country was enjoying for the smooth growth and development of the country.

Peace, he said, was an essential commodity that needed to be guarded.

He charged the clergy to be the light of the nation and the world at large to enable others to benefit.

Shine

“When we shine as light, we don’t benefit but others benefit from the light and that light must be consistent in order to be beneficial.

“For us to shine, our light must always be on,” Bishop Kisseih said.

The Holy Spirit of God, he said, was the source of the light of men of God, and that for their light to remain shining they must go to the source.

“We need to acknowledge God as the one who works in us,” he said.

He also called on the membership of the association to defend the Christian faith, saying, “Faith is what drives and inspires you.

So as Christians, our faith is to honour God, live a life that honours God and have a nation where godliness, uprightness, prosperity and increase continue.”

Ejura NDC supporters appeal to Mahama for MP’s appointment

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters in Ejura Sekyeredumasi Constituency are calling on President John Mahama to appoint their MP to one of the remaining deputy ministerial positions.

This move, according to the NDC supporters is a way to console the party’s grassroots, who are reportedly disappointed.

According to Sadiku Katadatu, the constituency research officer, appointing their MP, Muhammad Bawah Braimah, would make it easier for the party to campaign in the area for the next elections.

The constituency is deemed the second largest stronghold of the NDC in the Ashanti region, after Asawase, and has been loyal to the party since 1992.

“It is important to indicate that we take so much pride in the fact that the NDC has won all the nine organised presidential elections with huge margins from 1992 to 2024,” said Sadiku.

He noted that although the party lost a parliamentary election to the NPP in 2012, the constituency has consistently shown strong support for the NDC.

In the recent election, the constituency gave President Mahama and the NDC over 30,000 votes, making it the second-highest vote count in the region – a trend that has held steady over time.

“We are very frustrated, desperate and melancholic as a people, especially when all our neighbouring constituencies have been rewarded with ministerial appointments either under the NDC or the NPP regime.

“We are discriminatory the only constituency that has never been rewarded in that regard by the party we hold very dear to our hearts. Where have we gone wrong as a people? Where lies our loyalty to the NDC?” he quizzed.

Sadiku expressed his disappointment and humiliation on behalf of the MP and the people of the constituency.

According to him, the MP has made immense efforts to support the party in the constituency, and it’s disheartening to see those efforts go unrecognised.

“We the youth are saying here and now that, we cannot tolerate this kind of treatment anymore. The presidency and the national party should realise that Mr Bawa and his supporters suffered severely in the hands of the NPP in the last eight years and the time for the reward is now,” he stated.

Ghana’s economic recovery was faster than expected, let’s not reverse it – Dr Amin Adam

0

The immediate past Finance Minister says Ghana’s economic recovery was quicker than anticipated, urging the new administration to sustain the gains rather than undo progress for political reasons.

Dr Mohammed Amin Adam Anta speaking on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition on Thursday, highlighted the resilience of the economy despite global economic challenges, stating that Ghana had outperformed expectations in its recovery.

“I do not disagree that the economy was the major issue on the ballot because we all knew that the economy was difficult,” he acknowledged.

“And as I explained, it wasn’t only the Ghanaian economy. Most incumbents across the world who went through elections around the same time lost, so it wasn’t peculiar to Ghana. The economy really dominated the political debate.”

However, he was quick to point out that the economic challenges were largely influenced by external factors rather than purely domestic mismanagement.

“Our view is that these factors that led to our economic difficulties were not generally domestic-induced. Many other countries were facing the same problem, but we had done well within 12 months,” he noted.

Dr Amin Adam cited data from 2022 through 2024, which he said showed that the turnaround was not only real but swifter than anticipated by global financial institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as well as economic analysts within Ghana.

“If you look at the data from 2022 to 2023 and then 2024, you will see that the turnaround was quick. The recovery was faster than even anticipated by the World Bank, IMF, and many economic analysts, even in Ghana,” he stressed.

He underscored that macroeconomic stability was essential for sustained economic growth and noted that Ghana had achieved this despite undergoing debt restructuring—an exercise that usually causes economies to shrink.

“We were getting stability, macro stability, which is a condition for economic growth. And even after doing a debt restructuring, where countries that have done restructuring will record negative growth, we were recording an average of about 6.4% last year,” he revealed.

“It just shows that the economy was turning to positive levels, which, when sustained, could really reduce the suffering and economic hardship faced by the people.”

Dr Amin Adam, however, expressed concern that political shifts could undermine the hard-fought progress.

“The Ghanaian people decided that they wanted a change, and this is why I expected the new government to sustain the gains that we have made so that it translates into tangible benefits for the people,” he said.

Warning against political interference that could derail the recovery, he cautioned, “If you come in to do politics as usual, you lose the point and you are not really able to sustain those gains. And this is what I’ve seen President Mahama doing.”

ISDS congratulates Bagbin on his re-election as speaker

0

The Institute of Statisticians and Data Scientists (ISDS) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin on his re-election as Speaker of the ninth parliament of the Republic of Ghana.

His election reflects the confidence and trust placed in his leadership by Members of Parliament from across the political spectrum.

Mr. Bagbin’s re-election marks another milestone in his distinguished political career.

Having previously served as speaker of the 8th Parliament, he played a crucial role in maintaining parliamentary oversight, fostering national unity, and upholding democratic values.

His tenure saw significant legislative reforms, improved transparency, and enhanced cooperation between the executive and legislative branches of government.

Mr. Bagbin, a seasoned lawmaker, has been a dominant figure in Ghana’s political landscape for decades.

Before assuming the Speakership, he was the longest-serving Member of Parliament, representing the Nadowli-Kaleo constituency for multiple terms.

His vast experience in legislative affairs, governance, and public policy makes him a fitting choice to lead the nation’s legislative arm once again.

In a formal letter signed by Executive Secretary James Amewudah and President/Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Nicholas N.N. Nsowah-Nuamah, ISDS praised Speaker Bagbin for his unwavering commitment to democratic principles and legislative excellence.

“Your election is a testament to the confidence and trust placed in your leadership by the Honourable Members of Parliament across the political spectrum,” ISDS stated.

“Your stewardship of the Eighth Parliament demonstrated a steadfast commitment to upholding democratic principles and fostering national unity.”

The institute emphasized the importance of data-driven decision-making in governance, expressing its eagerness to collaborate with Parliament to enhance legislative oversight, improve policy formulation, and support national development initiatives.

As Speaker of Parliament, Bagbin is expected to play a pivotal role in ensuring that the legislative arm of government executes its functions effectively.

His leadership will be instrumental in addressing pressing national issues, enacting critical laws, and providing checks and balances to Ghana’s democratic governance.

With an increasingly dynamic political environment, his ability to mediate and build consensus among different political factions will be essential for legislative efficiency and national progress.

As Ghana embarks on another parliamentary session under his leadership, stakeholders, governance institutions, and civil society organizations will be keenly watching how Speaker Bagbin steers the affairs of Parliament.

His track record of dedication and leadership suggests that the Ninth Parliament will continue to play a crucial role in shaping Ghana’s democratic governance.

ISDS has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Parliament in leveraging statistical research and data science to inform policy decisions, improve governance, and contribute to sustainable national development.

Irate NDC youth in Ashaiman vandalise Chairman’s office over appointment discontent

0

As President John Mahama’s government begins to take shape, discontent is brewing in the Ashaiman constituency of the Greater Accra Region.

Frustrated youth in the area feel marginalised despite their consistent and overwhelming support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) since 1992, accusing the party of toying with their emotions.

On Thursday, a group of irate youth stormed the office of constituency chairman, Shaddad Umar Jallo, burning tires and shattering glass doors to express their displeasure.

Reports indicate that they initially planned to demonstrate against President Mahama and block traffic on the Accra-Tema motorway, but party leadership in the constituency managed to calm tempers before the situation escalated.

The youth, however, remain adamant that they will no longer be pacified with mere promises.

Presiding Member of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, Godwin Twumasi, urged the national leadership to take swift action, warning of further unrest.

“We have become a laughing stock. Our friends and neighbours in the NPP keep questioning our motivation for supporting the NDC when we are constantly left out during appointments,” he lamented.

Mr Twumasi highlighted that the only notable appointment Ashaiman has received is Alfred Kwame Agbeshie’s role as the 2nd Majority Leader in Parliament.

He pointed to President Mahama’s campaign promises as the root of the growing frustration.

“President Mahama promised to appoint someone from Ashaiman and to fix our deplorable road network. Until these promises are fulfilled, we don’t know how to convince the masses for 2028,” he stressed.

Mr Twumasi stated that appointing someone from Ashaiman does not necessarily have to be their MP. “Anyone competent enough in any role will help settle this,” he added.

With tensions rising, the 2nd Deputy Constituency Youth Organizer, Regina Agbagba, called on President Mahama to intervene before the situation spirals out of control.

“The youth have made it clear that our MP, Ernest Norgbey, has worked tirelessly, helping the NDC secure over 69,000 votes in the 2024 elections.

“Apart from President Mahama, Sammy Gyamfi, Ato Forson, Kwame Agbodza, Asiedu Nketia, and others made the same promise,” she recounted.

Expressing her frustration, she questioned Ashaiman’s role in the party. “Are we only good for demonstrations? Is that all we can do?

“The success the party attained here was by sweat and blood, with sleepless nights and lives put on the line. Ashaiman deserves better,” she cried.

Deputy Women’s Organizer, Beatrice Esinam Agbeko Teye, credited party executives for preventing what could have been a more troubling situation.

“We can only ask our constituents to remain calm. They want Ashaiman’s contribution to be recognised, and we trust in the president’s decision,” she said.

Meanwhile, Constituency Organiser Mark Apetor noted that beyond seeking appointments, the teeming youth are also demanding employment opportunities, particularly in local factories.

Despite efforts by party executives to ease tensions, there are fears that the youth may soon run out of patience.

The police have since stepped in to contain the situation and maintain peace in Ashaiman.

One of the Most Popular Skin Care Products, Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 Is Being Discontinued

0

It’s a sad day for the thousands of devoted fans of the cult-classic Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970. The beloved toner is being discontinued due to new FDA regulations banning one of its ingredients, phenol. The product has been around for decades, used by influencers and celebrities like Nicole Kidman, as well as everyday consumers alike, and its loyal customers are surely grieving the loss of their go-to staple. Here, we get into the details of why Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 is being discontinued, what you can use instead and more.

What is Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970?

Biologique Recherche

So, what exactly is Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 and why is it so popular? The lotion is essentially an exfoliating solution, a “multifunctional lotion that exfoliates, cleanses and purifies the epidermis, helping it maintain its acid pH balance. With daily gentle purification, the skin becomes mattified and revitalized,” the brand’s website says.

Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 came out in 1970 and has been a vital product in many people’s skincare routines for decades. It’s said to help smooth wrinkles, regenerate skin cells for brighter skin, treat acne and more. Some even may refer to it as “Botox in a bottle.”

Why is Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 being discontinued?

Some of the main ingredients found in Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 are niacinamide, glycerin, salicylic acid, sulfur and even vinegar (which helps explain its unpleasant smell). But it’s another one of its ingredients, phenol, that is causing it to be discontinued.

Phenol is an antiseptic, disinfectant and chemical compound used in both household products and some cosmetics like Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970. While it’s a beloved ingredient in the lotion, it, unfortunately, does pose safety risks to our skin, according to the CDC: “All forms of phenol cause irritation, and acute toxic effects of phenol most often occur by skin contact. Even dilute solutions (1% to 2%) may cause severe burns if contact is prolonged.”

Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 has less than 1% of phenol in its formula, but the FDA is banning the ingredient from being used in cosmetics and skincare.

When will Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 be discontinued?

The last shipments of Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 to the U.S. were sent in January. This has led to many users of the product to purchase however many they can get their hands on to stock up. Essentially, once each store that sells the lotion runs out, there will be no way to get it again.

Alternatives to Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970

If you’re a user of Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 and are now panicking to find an alternative, don’t worry. The brand will still be selling its other lotions, like Lotion P50 (not the 1970 version), Lotion P50W made for those with sensitive skin, Lotion P50V and Lotion P50 PIGM 400, all of which don’t contain phenol.

Other exfoliation lotions we like outside of Biologique Recherche are Prequel Mutli-Acid Milk Peel AHA Exfoliating Solution and Versed Daily Brightening Solution. Both of these drugstore options contain key ingredients of lactic acid and glycerin like Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970, without the phenol.

I will not forget about the creative arts sector – Dumelo

0

Ghanaian actor and politician, John Dumelo, has pledged his support for the creative arts industry despite his new positions as a Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister designate for Food and Agriculture.

Speaking at the launch of Celestine Donkor’s 11th Celestial Praiz concert on February 6, 2025, John appreciated the works of the gospel musician and promised to always lend her the needed support:

He noted that regardless of his involvement in agriculture and politics, he will still avail himself for activities in the creative arts.

“Despite the fact that I am an MP now and I am in the Agric Ministry, I still will not forget where I came from which is the arts sector and I will always be an arts person. I will always be a creative person and if we don’t develop our own who else will develop it for us,” he said at the programme which was held at Tang Palace in Accra.

He added that even though some people disregard the creative industry, it contributes greatly to the economy of the country.

Yesterday, the celebrated actor was announced as the Deputy Minister Designate for Food and Agriculture. Prior to his nomination he had been tipped by a number of people to occupy a ministerial position in the tourism, culture and creative arts ministry.

John Dumelo, for the past years has also been hugely involved in agriculture and has advised the youth to take the venture seriously.

He is currently the Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.

Komenda Sugar Factory to be made operational – President Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has assured that the Komenda Sugar Factory in the Central Region will be made operational under his government.

He stated that his administration was committed to ensuring that the project proceeds as planned to make the Central Region the country’s largest sugar producer.

Addressing hundreds of people at a “Thank You” rally in Cape Coast today, President Mahama said the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry had been directed to provide an update on the status of the factory to facilitate the necessary action.

The President, who was accompanied by Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, was met at Victoria Park by hundreds of enthusiastic residents from across the region. Among them were chiefs, academics, clergy, and other identifiable groups.

The factory’s background

The then-NDC government secured a $35 million loan from the Indian Export-Import Bank, followed by an additional $24 million investment to revamp the factory’s operations.

The facility was inaugurated by former President Mahama in May 2016 but ceased operations shortly after.

The factory, which was expected to employ 7,300 people along the value chain, has remained largely non-operational since then.

The NPP government made several efforts to revive the factory, conducting multiple test runs, but full operations were hampered, with inadequate raw material supply cited as a critical challenge.

Last August, the then Minister of Trade and Industry, K.T. Hammond, announced plans to lease the Komenda Sugar Factory to West African Agro Limited, an India-based firm, for a renewable term of 15 to 20 years.

This announcement followed his disclosure to Parliament that the factory’s retooling was 98 per cent complete.

Concerns from outgrowers

Outgrower farmers have, however, often expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of transparency in the factory management’s engagement with them, arguing that the true state of the factory was not being disclosed.

President Mahama reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting farmers in the region, improving irrigation schemes and systems, and introducing policies to modernise agriculture in the Central Region and beyond.

Completion of Anomabo Fisheries College

The President also expressed concern over the prolonged delay in completing the Anomabo Fisheries College, which, according to him, was at an advanced stage when the NDC left office in 2016.

He assured that budgetary allocations would be made in March this year to ensure the project’s completion and inauguration before the end of the year.

Commitment to development

President Mahama highlighted the Central Region’s historical significance and immense contribution to national development.

He stressed that, beyond its prominence in tourism and education, the region held vast potential for agriculture and agribusiness, serving as a major food production hub for the country.

His government, he pledged, would invest in agricultural development and agribusiness to improve the livelihoods of the people in the region.

He also expressed gratitude to the region for voting for him and his vice-presidential candidate, saying their support affirmed their belief in a united, progressive, and forward-moving Ghana.

President Mahama further pledged to fulfil all his campaign promises to the nation, particularly to the people of the Central Region.

“As President, I also identify as a son of this region and commit to recognising and honouring its importance, whether in the area of educational infrastructure, healthcare, or economic empowerment. We will work together to elevate the lives of all who call this region home,” he stated.

He emphasised that the region would receive its fair share of national development.

Two SHS students in court for sexually abusing 14-year old girl

The incident occurred during the school’s inter-sports competition The incident occurred during the school’s inter-sports competition

Two students of Saviour Senior High School at Akyem Osiem have been arraigned before the Koforidua Circuit Court B for allegedly defiling and indecently assaulting a 14-year-old female student.

The accused, Michael, 18, and Emmanuel, a 17-year-old juvenile offender, are both Form Two boarders at the school, while the victim is a Form One student and also a boarder.

The incident occurred during the school’s inter-sports competition, which took place from Wednesday, January 22, to Friday, January 24, 2025.

During this period, students were given more freedom, and the victim reportedly mingled with the accused persons.

According to the prosecution, on January 23, 2025, at around 5:00 PM, Michael lured the victim to the school’s Science Block, where they met Emmanuel and three other students.

Michael later took the victim to a classroom in the Business Block, where he kissed her and left her alone.

Shortly after, Emmanuel entered the classroom and informed the victim that Michael had “blue balls,” a term the victim did not understand. Emmanuel explained that it meant Michael needed help to release sperm.

The victim reportedly agreed to assist, and Michael returned to the classroom, where he allegedly made the victim undress, inserted his finger into her vagina, and later had sexual intercourse with her. After Michael left, Emmanuel also entered the room and attempted to insert his finger into the victim’s vagina.

‘NDC won’t have peace in Parliament if they prevent re-collation of Ablekuma North results’

Nsawam/Adoagyiri Member of Parliament, Frank Annoh-Dompreh Nsawam/Adoagyiri Member of Parliament, Frank Annoh-Dompreh

The Member of Parliament of Nsawam/Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has issued a one-week ultimatum to the Electoral Commission (EC) to declare the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Akua Afriyieh, as the winner of the December 7 parliamentary elections.

In a video shared by Citi FM on their Facebook page on Thursday, February 6, 2025, the Minority Chief Whip asserted that Akua Afriyieh was the winner of the election.

The Minority Chief Whip insisted that the EC must declare Akua Afriyieh the winner, while dismissing calls for a re-run of the election.

“If they (NDC) are not reasonable enough to know that, based on the collated results, we have won the Ablekuma North parliamentary election, the NDC MPs will not know peace in Parliament. We will continue to demonstrate. So, if they do not allow the EC to re-collate, they will not know peace. We are giving the EC one week to declare the results. Why did the NDC burn the pink sheets? Ablekuma North is for the NPP. We are winning,” he noted.

Meanwhile, tensions remain high in the constituency, as both NPP’s Akua Afriyieh and NDC’s Ewurabena Aubyn have erected billboards declaring victory, despite the EC not yet announcing the final results.

The re-collation process has been delayed due to frequent disputes and chaos, leading to rising tensions and uncertainty.

Ablekuma North remains the only constituency from the December 7 election without a declared winner.

Ablekuma North: We won’t go for a rerun

0

Nana Akua Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Ablekuma North, has firmly ruled out the possibility of a rerun of the parliamentary election in the constituency.

She asserted that all necessary documentation is intact, dismissing calls for a rerun due to disputes over the collation of results.

A High Court order on January 4, 2025, directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to finalize the collation process and declare winners for four outstanding parliamentary elections. While three constituencies have had their results declared, Ablekuma North remains unresolved.

Collation resumed on January 8, 2025, but was suspended due to incomplete results from three polling stations. The EC scheduled the process to continue on January 17, 2025, at 8:00 AM. However, based on security intelligence, the Ghana Police Service advised postponement.

Despite this, the EC, in a statement on January 17, indicated that the police had not provided enhanced security at the collation center, leading to an invasion by party supporters and a subsequent suspension of the process.

Fans Call for Shatta Wale’s Addition to Netflix’s ‘Young, Famous and African

0

Several Ghanaians have called for the inclusion of Ghanaian Dancehall King Shatta Wale, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah, to the Young, Famous, and African cast in the next season.

Young, Famous & African is a reality series that follows a group of affluent young media stars in Johannesburg, South Africa which captures how they navigate their careers, relationships, and personal lives.

The series showcases the glamorous lifestyles and challenges faced by these celebrities, making it a captivating watch for fans of reality television.

The inclusion of Shatta Wale according to many is a result of the underrepresentation of Ghanaians in the cast. Currently, only Fantana is in a cast of 14 of which four are Nigerians; Swanky, Ini Edo, Annie Macaulay-Idibia, Zari Hassan (Zari the Boss lady), Shakib Cham Lutaaya, Uganda, Diamond Platnumz, Tanzania, Naked DJ, Kayleigh Schwark, Nadia Nakai, Khanyi Mbau from South Africa and Luis Munana Namibian.

In a Facebook post made by Peace Hyde Executive Producer for the reality show captioned, “The inexplicable power to create identity, narrative and capture the cultural zeitgeist through styling, authentic unscripted storytelling, unfiltered conversation, and emotions is undoubtedly one of the key drivers in #YoungFamousAndAfrican success. So it is beyond exciting to have the award-winning Season 3 of #YFA capture the moment and drive conversations but don’t take my word for it! No matter where you are in the world watch #YFA Season 3 Now Streaming ONLY on Netflix!…”

Dickson Adjei-Kusi under the comment session wrote, “Add Charles Nii Armah Mensah, Shatta Wale . We need more drama”. Ms. Aba Haizel also urged Peace Hyde to consider Ghanaian stars to spice up the show.”

Well done Peace Hyde, can you add more Ghanaians, Efya Norkturnal, Efia Odo, Kidi, and Kennedy Agyapong’s daughters, they also made a reality show on YouTube”.

Shatta Wale who has over a decade of experience in the African music industry has contributed immensely to the projection of Ghana music on the continent. On record, he is the first Ghanaian artist to shut down O2 Indigo on two occasions, the Accra sports stadium, and also the first Ghanaian musician to get featured in Beyonce’s Black is King album.

Mahama highlights Government’s commitment to operationalisation of Komenda Sugar Factory

By Iddi Yire

Cape Coast, Feb. 06, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday highlighted his government’s commitment to the operationalisation of the Komenda Sugar Factory in the Central Region.

He noted that he asked the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry to update him with the Komenda Sugar Factory.

“We are determined to proceed and continue with that project so that the Central Region will become the biggest producer of sugar in Ghana,” President Mahama said at a durbar of the Chiefs and People of the Central Region in Cape Coast during his Thank You Tour of the Region.

The nationwide tour, which began on Friday, January 24, in Ho, the Volta Regional Capital is to enable the President to express his sincere appreciation to the people of Ghana for the overwhelming support and trust reposed in him at the 2024 elections.

The President with Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who earlier inspected the abandoned Anomabo Fisheries College project, said the project was a dream of the late President John Evans Atta Mills.

He said the project was packaged and work was started, and it was at an advanced stage of completion for the first phase when they left office.

“It is unacceptable that for eight years that project has been abandoned and has not been continued,” the President said.

He noted that the 2025 budget was going to be ready in March, and that they were going to make provision in the budget to continue the project so that by the end of this year, they would open that College for students.

President Mahama said upon completion, the project would be handed over to the University of Cape Coast and would be put under the Faculty of Agriculture to provide degrees in fishing and training in aquaculture.

He said the Government would also work closely to upgrade the facilities at the Cape Coast Hospital so that it could indeed be a real Teaching Hospital for the University of Cape Coast Medical School.

Cocoa Earnings See Lowest Drop In 15 Years

0

Ghana’s cocoa export earnings have plummeted to $1.7 billion in 2024, the lowest in 15 years, marking a 25.4% decline from the previous year.

Data from the Bank of Ghana reveals that cocoa production has shrunk by 11% within the same period, largely due to illegal mining, smuggling, and crop diseases.

Ghana’s cocoa output has drastically fallen from over 1 million metric tonnes in 2021 to just 500,000 tonnes in 2024.

This decline has weakened the country’s negotiating power in the syndicated loan market.

Despite Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire producing over 60% of the world’s cocoa, they have failed to capitalize on the recent 157% surge in global cocoa prices due to forward sales agreements.

Ghana’s cocoa earnings have been declining since 2022, and the country’s fragile economy is facing increased pressure.

The decline in cocoa revenue is expected to strain the Ghanaian cedi further, exacerbating the nation’s fiscal challenges.

Abdullah bin Zayed attends Zayed Award for Human Fraternity ceremony, recognising 2025 honorees

0

Under the patronage of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, attended the ceremony of the sixth edition of the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity.

Held on Tuesday at the Founder’s Memorial in Abu Dhabi, the ceremony gathered world leaders, dignitaries, and humanitarian advocates, including President of East Timor José Ramos-Horta; His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence; First Lady of Colombia Verónica del Socorro Alcocer García; and former president of the European Council Charles Michel.

The event – with the theme ‘Tapestry of Humanity’ – opened with a moving performance by 18-year-old sight-impaired Indonesian singer Putri Ariani and Emirati pianist Rashed Al Marzooqi.

The ceremony coincided with the UN-recognised International Day of Human Fraternity, which commemorates the signing of the Abu Dhabi Document on Human Fraternity by Pope Francis, head of the Catholic Church, and Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, on February 4, 2019.

The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity recognised three honorees namely: Prime Minister of Barbados the Honorable Mia Amor Mottley, SC, MP, for her visionary leadership and climate advocacy; World Central Kitchen (WCK) – founded by Chef José Andrés – for the organisation’s relentless commitment to providing food relief in conflict zones and following natural disasters; and 15-year-old health innovator Heman Bekele for his efforts in developing a cancer-fighting soap to treat early-stage skin cancer.

The Honorable Mia Amor Mottley, SC, MP, received the award for her bold leadership on climate action. Through the Bridgetown Initiative, launched in 2022, she advocates for systemic changes to combat climate inequality and urges global financial systems to prioritize climate resilience in vulnerable nations.

Mottley has committed to making Barbados 100 percent renewable by 2030, setting a powerful example for climate action. Her innovative debt-for-climate swaps have enabled countries to redirect resources toward building climate resilience, influencing policy shifts worldwide and creating lasting impacts on a global climate justice.

Since its founding by Chef José Andres in 2010, World Central Kitchen has delivered over 300 million meals across more than 30 countries. Its rapid response model and ability to operate in some of the most challenging and dangerous circumstances have established WCK as a global leader in disaster relief, offering immediate aid and long-term support to communities in need.

Heman Bekele received the award for his ambition to save the lives of the most vulnerable and his vision of accessible and affordable healthcare. Inspired by the high cost of skin cancer treatment in developing countries, he developed a cost-effective soap that aims to treat early-stage skin cancer.

He is now collaborating with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health to refine and assess his concept, with skin cancer researchers recognizing his potential to revolutionise healthcare in underserved communities and improve global access to affordable treatments.

Pope Francis and His Eminence Grand Imam Al-Tayeb addressed the ceremony in video messages.

Pope Francis remarked: “I trust that the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity honorees will set an example to encourage others in undertaking initiatives to promote peaceful coexistence and that they will be models of fruitful collaboration between people of different religions at the service of all humanity.”

Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed Al-Tayeb shared: “On this occasion I am pleased to extend my heartfelt congratulations to this year’s Zayed Award for Human Fraternity honorees.

The Honorable Mia Mottley, I commend your tireless efforts in addressing the global challenges of climate change. The young hero – today’s child and tomorrow’s scientist – Heman Bekele, it was truly a joy to witness your well-deserved recognition. World Central Kitchen, honoring you today is indeed an acknowledgement of all humanitarian relief workers who have left their homes, families and children to extend a helping hand to the vulnerable and oppressed.”

Prime Minister of Barbados the Honorable Mia Amor Mottley, SC, MP, expressed: “It is our responsibility to recognize that we must make history trend in the right direction, not for us who have lived life, but for the young ones.

The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity bringing together the best of what is represented both by His Holiness Pope Francis and His Eminence the Grand Imam allows us to reflect on what really matters. Without life, we have nothing and without a planet, we definitely have nothing. I thank you for this high honor bestowed upon me, and I take it not in my name but in the name of all those who want a voice for a better planet and for opportunities and peace for the people of the world.”

Founder of World Central Kitchen, Chef José Andrés, shared his insights during the ceremony, emphasizing, “This award is an expression of the values Sheikh Zayed has taught his nation and the world; tolerance, coexistence, understanding and respect, they are the values of the UAE, and I think in our own way, World Central Kitchen seeks to live by these simple principles.”

In his remarks, Heman Bekele said, “I have always been driven by one goal: to equalize access to healthcare—to ensure that life-saving treatments and technologies aren’t limited by geography, wealth, or privilege. Science and innovation should serve humanity, not just those who can afford it. This award will help so much in fueling my dreams. This is just the beginning, and I invite you all to join me in making healthcare a universal right, not just a privilege.”

The ceremony also marked the opening of nominations for the 2026 edition of the award. Eligible nominators can submit their nominations via the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity’s official website.

“The NDC must & they will pay you off! So, my fellow Ghanaian, pack, negotiate for all payments due to you & leave space for the NDC to have their field day.

Prof. Kobby Mensah’s leadership and the future of sustainable tourism in Ghana

0

Renowned academic and Political Marketing expert Prof. Kobby Mensah has been appointed by the President of the Republic of Ghana as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC).

His leadership comes at an important moment when the tourism sector seeks innovative strategies to boost growth while preserving the country’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

One of the key philosophies that will shape his tenure is sustainable tourism – a vision that aligns with global best practices and Ghana’s long-term tourism objectives.

What is Sustainable Tourism?

Sustainable tourism refers to a responsible approach to travel and tourism that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

It balances economic growth, environmental protection, and social well-being by minimising negative environmental impacts, such as pollution, deforestation, and over-tourism.

It also helps preserve cultural heritage by ensuring that local traditions, customs, and historical sites are safeguarded. This will lead to economic inclusivity so that local communities benefit from tourism investments and employment opportunities.

What Prof. Kobby Mensah Brings to the Table

With his deep expertise in strategic tourism marketing, branding, and media relations, Prof. Mensah is expected to bring a fresh perspective to Ghana’s tourism sector.

His leadership at GTDC will likely focus on branding Ghana as a Sustainable Tourism Destination and repositioning it as a leading eco-tourism and cultural tourism hub in Africa.

He is also expected to develop strategic marketing campaigns that promote responsible tourism.

Another critical area he will likely focus on is community-centred tourism development, which ensures that local communities are actively involved in tourism projects by encouraging local entrepreneurship in the tourism value chain, like hotels, restaurants, tour guides, and artisanal businesses.

The venerable Professor is also expected to encourage eco-friendly infrastructure and investment by advocating for environmentally sustainable hotel and resort developments and supporting green initiatives such as waste management, clean energy, and conservation projects within tourism sites.

In the coming months, I look forward to several collaborations with government agencies, tourism operators, and international bodies to implement sustainable tourism policies to drive partnerships with investors who align with sustainability principles.

A New Era for Ghana’s Tourism Sector?

I am hopeful that under Prof. Kobby Mensah’s leadership, the GTDC is poised to advance Ghana’s tourism industry through responsible, community-driven, and eco-conscious strategies.

His vision for sustainable tourism will not only attract visitors but also ensure that Ghana’s natural beauty, historical landmarks, and cultural legacy are preserved for future generations.

His appointment signals a progressive shift towards a tourism sector that prioritises both economic growth and environmental responsibility.

As Ghana continues to expand its tourism footprint, Prof. Mensah’s leadership could be a game-changer in positioning the country as a sustainable tourism model for Africa and beyond.

Ghanaian Soldier Gets 70 Months In Prison For Smuggling Firearms

0

A Ghanaian soldier serving in the United States (U.S.) Army, Major Kojo Owusu Dartey, has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for smuggling firearms from the United States to Ghana.

Additionally, he will serve three years of supervised release.

Major Dartey, a member of the U.S. Special Forces, was convicted of multiple offenses, including making false statements, conspiracy, dealing in firearms without a license, and illegally exporting firearms without a license.

He was also found guilty of lying about having sexual relations with one of his witnesses in the case.

According to court records, Major Dartey orchestrated a smuggling operation where he personally acquired firearms and instructed another soldier to purchase additional weapons on his behalf. He then concealed the firearms inside blue barrels containing rice and household goods and shipped them to Ghana.

However, officials of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) intercepted the container carrying the smuggled firearms.

Major Dartey’s sentencing comes after he was found guilty in April 2024 of smuggling firearms to Ghana.

He initially faced a maximum sentence of 240 months in prison.

Former SIC MD Hollistar Duah-Yentumi drops lawsuit against SIC PLC and acting MD

The former Managing Director of SIC Insurance Company Limited, Hollistar Duah-Yentumi, has withdrawn her lawsuit against SIC PLC and Acting Managing Director, James Agyenim-Boateng.

This was reported by TV3GH on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

Duah-Yentumi filed the lawsuit on February 4, 2025, challenging the termination of her employment and the subsequent appointment of Agyenim-Boateng, which was announced by President John Dramani Mahama on January 27, 2025.

A lawyer by profession, Duah-Yentumi argued that her tenure as Managing Director was contractually secured for a period of four years, set to expire on January 1, 2028, unless otherwise determined by the Board of Directors.

She contended that her employment was governed by a contract dated March 21, 2024, with an addendum dated May 2, 2024, stipulating that her position could only be terminated by the Board of Directors or through a resolution passed by all shareholders at an Annual General Meeting.

According to the lawsuit, her termination was unlawful as it was executed through a letter from the Office of the President, signed by Executive Secretary Callistus Mahama, Ph.D., on January 24, 2025.

The letter, referenced as OPS 127/25/149, was received by Duah-Yentumi on January 27, 2025. It purported to terminate her role while appointing Agyenim-Boateng as her successor.

Duah-Yentumi claimed this action violated the terms of her employment agreement. She sought a High Court declaration that her termination was unlawful and breached her contract.

“Regarding the termination of the Plaintiff’s employment, the Plaintiff states that under and by virtue of clause 7 of the agreement, the Plaintiff’s employment may only be terminated by the Board of Directors of the 1st Defendant or by all the shareholders of the company acting at an Annual General Meeting for the said purpose,” the suit read.

Additionally, she challenged the legality of Agyenim-Boateng’s appointment, arguing that it was not conducted in accordance with the company’s governance procedures.

The lawsuit also highlighted the financial implications of her termination. Under her contract, Duah-Yentumi was entitled to a lump sum payment covering her gross salary, allowances, and benefits for the remainder of her tenure.

“The Plaintiff further states that upon the termination of her employment, she is entitled, in accordance with clause 7 of the agreement, to a lump sum payment of her gross salary, allowances, and benefits for the unexpired period of the agreement, which payment must be made at the ‘official handing over to the next successor,’” the suit added.

Her employment agreement included significant benefits, such as a 30-day paid annual vacation, an annual familiarization tour with a $3,000 airfare allowance, a per diem of $810 for international travel, and personal accident and life insurance coverage equivalent to five times her annual basic salary. These benefits were subject to an annual 15% increment review.

Duah-Yentumi’s legal team sought an order for the defendants to pay her entire salary and benefits for the unexpired term of her contract, along with any other relief the court deemed appropriate.

“The Managing Director shall be entitled to an annual familiarization tour to any destination. SIC shall pay an amount not exceeding US$3,000 for an air ticket for the trip upon proof of undertaking the trip. The annual familiarization benefit is a ‘use it or lose it’ benefit.

“The Managing Director’s annual familiarization tour shall be considered part of her entitled paid vacation days each year and should therefore be deducted from the total entitled days when taken.

“The Managing Director shall be paid a per diem of US$810 for all international travels for seven (7) days towards the familiarization tour referred to in section 5.3(d). The payment shall commence before her departure,” the suit further stated.

The case has drawn significant attention, raising questions about corporate governance, contractual obligations, and the role of external authorities in the management of publicly listed companies.

The defendants in the case were SIC Insurance PLC, a limited liability company listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange, and James Agyenim-Boateng, a lawyer and politician residing within the jurisdiction of the court.

Dutch footballer of Ghanaian descent, Memphis Depay, has apologised to the public after being handed a four-month prison term in France for drunk driving.

He noted that by using his car instead of boarding a taxi, he made a mistake that flouted the laws of France.

Depay stated that he has learned a lesson from the incident and will not repeat such behaviour.

“I would like to apologise here. Last summer, during my vacation in Monaco, I made a mistake and decided to drive home after having a drink in a restaurant. I should have gotten into a taxi instead, but I didn’t.

“That’s why I want to apologise and take full responsibility for my actions. 2024 was a year of lessons, and I will definitely learn from this. In 2025, we will do better,” he said as quoted by The Sun.

According to French media outlet RMC, the Monaco Criminal Court imposed a two-year driving ban on Depay for breaching driving protocols.

It was reported that due to Depay’s absence at the hearing in court, he was fined 9,000 euros for his actions, which seemingly disrespected the court.
