Acute Water Crisis Affects Adidome Senior High School (ADISEC)
Acute Water Crisis Affects Adidome Senior High School (ADISEC)

The Adidome Senior High School (ADISEC) in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region is facing an acute perennial water crisis that is affecting the academic work of the students. For about one month now, the school has been without water due to its inability to settle its indebtedness of One Hundred and Four Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHS104,000.00) with the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), leading to the disconnection of the school’s water supply.

The Headmaster of ADISEC, Dr. Vincent-Dzidula Kwasi Atiku, made the revelation at the 40th anniversary speech and prize-giving day of the school at Adidome. ‘But for the occasional intervention of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of the school in arranging a water tanker from the District Assembly to supply water to the kitchen, we would have been in severe crisis, ’ the Headmaster added.

Throwing more light on the situation, Dr. Atiku explained that in recent times, students had to, as he put it, troop to town across the main Ho-Mafi Adidome-Sogakope road at the mercy of cars and motorbikes in search of water every morning and evening, with some sneaking to engage in social activities. The situation, according to the Headmaster, has put fear in them as teachers and parents who are playing the custodian role for their students.

Dr. Atiku used the occasion to passionately appeal to the President and the Minister of Education to urgently intervene through the provision of a mechanized industrial borehole to avert the high water supply cost by the CWSA, which comes up to some Eight Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHS8,000.00) every month.

The Headmaster also touched on other serious challenges facing the school. According to him, the absence of a good internal road network system in the school, coupled with a bad drainage system, is worrying. This, he said, continues to worsen the poor roads, washing away also the school buildings. Dr. Atiku appealed to the President and the Minister of Roads to urgently consider the school under the Big Push Initiative by tarring the internal roads of the school alongside constructing a proper drainage system for the entire school compound.

The other urgent infrastructural and other related needs of the school include a Boys’ and Girls’ dormitory storey building of six hundred (600) sleeping capacity each, seven hundred (700) bunk beds, one thousand, five hundred (1,500) pieces of furniture, a 12-unit classroom block, a 33-seater bus as well as an official pick-up to assist in the transportation of students to programmes and also in carrying out official duties.

The ADISEC Headmaster also appealed to the President and the GETFund Administrator to provide the school with staff bungalows to help in the management of the teeming students on campus.

The anniversary cum speech day event was under the theme, ‘Forty Years of Providing Education in Adidome Senior High School – Achievements, Challenges and Prospects: The Role of Stakeholders’. It was aimed at raising funds to construct a 250-seater capacity ultra-modern staff common room for the teachers who currently mark students’ exercises under trees.

In the 2025 regional West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) ranking, Adidome SHS came 6th out of 67 schools with a total A1-C6 performance of 77 percent. The school, Dr. Atiku noted, is also a force to reckon with when it comes to Mathematics and Science. According to him, ADISEC is a national icon in the Energy Commission Science contest, reaching the grand finale stage, likewise the National Science and Maths Quiz competition, where ADISEC is also among the finalists for this year’s ultimate contest. ‘It has taken hard work and discipline for us to improve academically, and I am very grateful to the Board, my staff and the students for these feet’, the Headmaster intimated.

The Director, Pre-Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education, Nana Baffour Awuah, represented the Minister of Education at the event. He lauded ADISEC for its high discipline accolade and urged the students to aspire to greater heights. He also pledged the commitment of the Ministry towards ensuring that ADISEC continues to be a beacon of hope to many learners from the Mafi Traditional Area and beyond.

The Dufia of Mafi Adidome, Torgbe Kwasinyi Kakaklolo Agyeman V, and the Awafiaga of the Mafi Traditional Area, Torgbe Awudza Adabla XV, were among the traditional leaders present at the function. In a speech from them, the traditional leaders paid glowing tribute to the founding fathers of the school and urged the stakeholders, particularly the old students, to continue to make greater investment in and impact on the school.

Liquidity drain dampens T-bill auction as Treasury falls short of target

The BoG's open market operations (OMO) absorbed some GH¢19 billion ahead of the sale The BoG’s open market operations (OMO) absorbed some GH¢19 billion ahead of the sale

Aggressive liquidity tightening by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has been cited as a key factor for the performance of last week’s Treasury bill auction, which saw bids fall significantly short of government’s target.

According to an analysis by Databank Research, the central bank’s open market operations (OMO) absorbed some GH¢19billion ahead of the sale – constraining the market’s capacity to meet government’s GH¢5.58billion target.

“We believe subdued bank demand – following the Bank of Ghana’s contractionary open market operations that absorbed about GH¢19bn ahead of Friday’s Treasury-bill auction – largely drove the soft demand,” Databank said in a note.

This ensured a return to the prevailing trend of undersubscription, after the Treasury broke that pattern with a 14 percent oversubscription two weeks ago.

The auction closed with total bids of GH¢3.49billion, representing a shortfall of 37.53 percent against the target. The Treasury accepted GH¢3.46billion; a coverage ratio of just 0.62x of the target and 0.64x of maturing bills worth GH¢5.44billion.

Yields edged up marginally across the curve with the 91-day bill rising 5 basis points (bps) to 10.5 percent, the 182-day gaining 3 bps to 12.39 percent and the 364-day increasing 2 bps to 12.90 percent.

Databank noted that the modest yield movements signal a market still adjusting cautiously, rather than pricing in heightened sovereign risk.

“The marginal yield uptick reflects cautious repricing rather than strong risk premia,” it said.

Investors also showed a continued preference for shorter maturities amid uncertainty. Databank observed: “Short-end preference is set to persist until deeper secondary market liquidity strengthens conviction along the curve”.

In the coming week, the Treasury plans to raise GH¢3.71billion through the issuance of 91-day, 182-day, and 364-day bills to cover GH¢3.61billion in maturing bills. Market participants will be watching closely to see whether liquidity conditions improve sufficiently to support full subscription.

Meanwhile, activity in the secondary bond market also slowed – with weekly turnover falling 18.17 percent to GH¢906.14million from GH¢1.11billion the previous week. The February 2027 bond led market flows with GH¢416.01million in volumes traded.

Trading was concentrated in the 2027–2030 maturities, which accounted for 61 percent of activity at a weighted average yield to maturity (YTM) of 16.08 percent. Bonds maturing between 2031 and 2038 made up the remaining 39 percent of trades, with an average YTM of 16.40 percent.

Databank attributed the subdued activity to restrained investor sentiment. “We attribute the low turnover to subdued investor participation amid cautious sentiment,” it said.

Looking ahead, Databank expects “modest activity as asset managers rebalance portfolios ahead of month-end”.

Joseph Kabila returned to DR Congo in May after a period of self-imposed exile Joseph Kabila returned to DR Congo in May after a period of self-imposed exile

Former Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila has been sentenced to death in absentia for war crimes and treason.

The charges concern accusations that Kabila has been supporting the M23, a rebel group who have wreaked devastation across the country’s eastern region.

Kabila was convicted on Friday of treason, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, including murder, sexual assault, torture and insurrection.

He rejected the case as “arbitrary” and said the courts were being used as an “instrument of oppression”. His current whereabouts are unknown.

The 54-year-old led DR Congo for 18 years, after succeeding his father Laurent, who was shot dead in 2001.

Kabila handed power to President Félix Tshisekedi in 2019, but they later fell out and Kabila went into self-imposed exile in 2023.

In April this year, the former president said he wanted to help find a solution to the deadly fighting in the east and arrived in the M23-held city of Goma the following month.

President Tshisekedi accused Kabila of being the brains behind the M23 and senators stripped him of his legal immunity, paving the way for his prosecution.

Decades of conflict had escalated earlier this year when the M23 seized control of large parts of the mineral-rich east, including Goma, the city of Bukavu and two airports.

Pointing to overwhelming evidence, the UN and several Western countries have accused neighbouring Rwanda of backing the M23, and sending thousands of its soldiers into DR Congo.

But Kigali denies the charges, saying it is acting to stop the conflict from spilling over onto its territory.

A ceasefire deal between the rebels and the government was agreed in July, but the bloodshed has continued.

Soul Marley Be The Name Returns With Soul-Stirring Single “Frozen”

Nigerian-born, South Africa-based artist Soul Marley Be The Name is back with a brand-new single, “Frozen,” a deeply emotional track that fuses Afro-fusion, R&B, and soul into a powerful musical statement.

At its core, Frozen is a song about love, vulnerability, and the stillness that comes when emotions weigh too heavy for words. With heartfelt lyricism and smooth yet commanding vocals, Soul Marley Be The Name captures the fragile space between passion and pain—where the heart speaks louder than reason, yet leaves one motionless, “frozen” in the intensity of the moment.

Speaking on the single, Soul Marley Be The Name reflects: “Music for me is about truth. With ‘Frozen,’ I wanted to paint the picture of how it feels when love overwhelms you when you can’t move, can’t speak, but you still feel everything. It’s my story, but it’s also everyone’s story.”

This truth-driven approach is what has made him a standout voice in South Africa’s buzzing Afrobeat and Afro-fusion scene. Seamlessly blending influences from his Nigerian roots with the rich diversity of South Africa’s soundscape, Soul Marley Be The Name has been carving out a unique lane for himself. Frozen not only showcases his evolution as a songwriter and vocalist but also cements his place as one of the exciting rising voices shaping Africa’s contemporary sound.

With every note, Frozen embodies the sincerity and emotional depth that fans have come to love about his music. It’s more than just a song—it’s a moment of stillness, honesty, and connection.

The woman being rescued from the tree

RESIDENTS OF Afasiebon near Kwadaso Agric Nzema, a suburb of Kumasi, woke up to the weird news of a suspected ‘witch’ crash-landing on top of an avocado tree in the area.

According to some community members, they heard a loud bang in the area in the early hours of yesterday when residents of the community were asleep in their rooms.

Later on, they disclosed that they also heard dogs barking under a tree, sparking suspicion. When the residents got closer, they said they spotted a woman perching on the tree.

According to them, the woman was looking very weak, an indication that perhaps she may have fallen from the sky and accidentally landed on top of the tall avocado tree.

A sea of curious people in Afasiebon and nearby communities rushed to the scene to catch a glimpse of the woman, who was said to be looking confused.

Later on, a joint operation between the police and some community members helped to bring down the woman from the top of the tree, using a tall ladder.

According to reports, some of the agitated youth in the community attempted to manhandle her, but she was shielded by the policemen.

The woman, whose face was covered with a cloth to hide her identity, was whisked in a waiting police car to the station.

‘Runs girls’ will pay tax too – Nigeria tax chief speaks on new law

Taiwo Oyedele is Nigeria's Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Taiwo Oyedele is Nigeria’s Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that under its newly reformed tax laws, all forms of income will be subject to taxation, including money earned by commercial sex workers, popularly referred to as “runs girls.”

The clarification was given by Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, during an engagement session at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, City of David in Lagos on Sunday September 28, 2025.

A video of his remarks was posted on X by Vanguard Nigeria on September 30, 2025.

According to Oyedele, the new system does not distinguish between “legitimate” and “illegitimate” sources of income. What matters, he said, is whether a person earns money by providing a service or selling a product.

The silent tax behind your birthday gifts you probably didn’t know about

“If somebody is doing ‘runs girls’ (sex work), right, they go and look for men to sleep with. You know that’s a service. They will pay tax on it,” he explained.

Breaking down his point further, Oyedele said the law is designed to ensure fairness and expand Nigeria’s tax net.

“It just asks you whether you have an income. Did you get it from rendering a service or providing a good? Then you pay tax. If you earn a certain amount of money and you have to send upkeep to your cousin, your brother, or even a stranger, it doesn’t really matter.

‘I’ll sleep with 100 men whether GWR approves or not’– MandyKiss responds after rejection

“If the amount you are sending is money you are giving them not because they have done something for you, then it is a gift. We call it a non-exchange transaction. That is not taxable,” he added.

Government increases daily feeding fees of prisoners after 15 years

0

The Director-General of Prisons in charge of Services, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (ESQ), has disclosed that the government has approved an increase in the daily feeding fee for prisoners from GH¢1.80 to GH¢5, fifteen years after the rate was last reviewed.

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, she stated that until recently, prison authorities were managing just GH¢1.80 daily to feed each inmate, an amount she described as inadequate.

‘Ghanaian prisoners are fed with 60 pesewas per meal’ – Prison officer reveals

“Once the feeding is wrong, it has ripple effects on health and every other thing; we are working assiduously to ensure the rules change. We are hopeful the GH¢5 a day will be increased in the course of 2026 to reflect the feeding regime for a disgruntled adult, an angry adult behind bars,” she noted.

‘Even cats and dogs in our house, how much do we give them?’ – Muntaka bemoans GH¢1.80 feeding fee for prisoners

Patience Baffoe-Bonnie explained that prison authorities currently rely on their own gardens, a small fish pond, and donations from churches to supplement food supplies.

She noted that inadequate feeding often sparks riots, putting prison officers at serious risk.

“We have to note on this platform that one of the things that is giving cause for inmates to riot is food. So, we do everything within our means to ensure that as much as possible, we’re containing the inmates without the riots. Because if there are any riots, the poor prison officer becomes the first point of attack before any intervention. I want to say that beyond the feeding, there are also [other] challenges,” she stressed.

The new feeding fee would be captured in the 2026 Budget, following presidential approval, with GH¢10 million expected to be released to cover the last quarter of 2025.

Police, CHRAJ, Parliament, Others Fined Over RTI Violations

Genevieve Shirley Lartey Esq, Executive Secretary, RTI Commission

A RECENT Corruption Watch investigation has revealed that several prominent institutions in Ghana, including the Ghana Police Service, Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Parliamentary Service, Judicial Service of Ghana, Attorney General’s Department, and Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), have accumulated hefty fines totaling approximately GH¢5.6 million.

The fines were imposed due to these institutions’ failure to provide information requested by citizens under the Right to Information (RTI) law.

The investigation, which was conducted over a six-month period from February to July 2025, further revealed that the Ghana Police Service has paid a fine of GH¢450, 357, while the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice still owes GH¢30,000.

Other institutions that have violated the law include the Parliamentary Service, which paid GH¢53,785; the Judicial Service of Ghana, with an outstanding fine of GH¢100,000; the Attorney General’s Department, owing GH¢50,000; and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust, which has settled a fine of GH¢200,000.

The Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) paid the largest fine, totaling GH¢1.365 million. Other significant payments were made by the Ministry of Education (GH¢260,000), the Lands Commission (GH¢150,000), and the Ghana Audit Service (GH¢60,000). The Public Procurement Authority (PPA) still owes a fine of GH¢100,000.

The investigation further discovered that state institutions have been using taxpayers’ funds to pay for fines imposed on them by the RTI Commission (RTIC). These details are contained in Corruption Watch Ghana’s latest investigative report titled “Saga over RTI: Millions paid as penalty”, released on September 29, 2025.

Investigation has uncovered that some of Ghana’s key governance institutions are failing to comply with the Right to Information (RTI) law, denying citizens access to requested information. This non-compliance has resulted in fines imposed by the RTI Commission, totaling approximately GH¢5.6 million across over 70 determinations involving at least 60 institutions.

The investigation further revealed that in terms of frequency, the Ministry of Education ranks highest with four penalties received, while the Ghana Police Service has received three penalties. Ten other institutions have suffered two penalties each. They include the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Judicial Service, the Lands Commission, the PPA, the Ministry of Energy, and the Urban Roads Department.

Sampson Ahi is the Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Agribusiness Sampson Ahi is the Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Agribusiness

The 2-Day UK-Ghana Trade & Investment Forum has officially opened in Accra with a strong focus on industrial transformation, strategic partnerships, and financing for priority growth sectors.

Organised by the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce (UKGCC) in collaboration with the UK Government, Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programmes Secretariat, and DMA Invest, Day 1 of the forum brought together UK investors, Ghanaian businesses, and senior government officials to deepen dialogue and strengthen commercial collaboration between the two countries.

Delivering the keynote address, the Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Agribusiness, Hon. Sampson Ahi, highlighted Ghana’s ongoing efforts to accelerate its industrialisation agenda and attract investment. He assured participants of the government’s readiness to create the right environment for private sector growth, noting that Ghana’s position as the home of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat gives the country a unique strategic advantage.

“Our government is committed to building a competitive investment climate and deepening UK-Ghana collaboration,” Hon. Ahi stated. “This forum creates the ideal environment for UK businesses to explore opportunities and form strategic partnerships with local firms.”

Speaking under the theme “Ghana’s Industrial Transformation Agenda: Strategic Entry Points for UK Business Partnerships”, the Deputy Minister outlined key sectors open for investment, including agro-processing, pharmaceuticals, machinery, and textiles. He referenced successful UK-backed ventures such as Blue Skies and Demeter Ghana LTD. as case studies that demonstrate the potential of UK-Ghana trade relationships under the UK-Ghana Trade Partnership Agreement.

A major highlight of the forum was a presentation on Ghana’s 24H+ Economy initiative. Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programmes, Mr. Goosie Tanoh, explained that the policy is designed to create jobs, expand production capacity, and boost economic activity on a round-the-clock basis.

“Achieving the vision of the 24-Hour Economy requires targeted investment, access to long-term financing, and strong public-private partnerships,” Mr. Tanoh said. He added that the initiative has the potential to transform agriculture, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and technology, positioning Ghana as a hub for both regional and global trade.

In line with Ghana’s development priorities, discussions also explored financing opportunities for private sector growth, and the realities of doing business in Ghana from the perspective of UK businesses already operating in Ghana.

His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Africa, John Humphrey, reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to building stronger trade relations with Ghana. “The UK-Ghana Trade Partnership Agreement offers immense opportunities for businesses on both sides to scale, innovate, and thrive,” he said. “We are here to collaborate, to support, and to help unlock the full potential of this relationship.”

Annika Craine, Director of Partnerships with DMA Invest – a trade and investment consultancy helping the UK Government and businesses facilitate capital flows into markets outside of the G20, shared that her outfit led the delegation of UK businesses to the forum because of the opportunities Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Programmes present. “Some of the businesses are experts in infrastructure, financing, and insurance – companies who are here to impact and add value to the economy. We look forward to seeing the impact that the partnerships, networking, and deal-making will bring.”

The Executive Director of the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce, Adjoba Kyiamah, emphasised the strategic importance of the forum in advancing bilateral economic cooperation. “This forum is incredibly important to us at the UKGCC because our work is centred on engaging with both the Ghana and UK governments on behalf of our member companies,” she said. “Both governments are pursuing robust growth strategies, and these align perfectly with the interests of our member businesses, which are committed to viability, sustainability, and contributing meaningfully to both economies.”

Kyiamah explained that the two-day event provides a practical platform for direct engagement between UK investors and Ghana-based businesses, with the aim of fostering partnerships and generating tangible business deals.

She further underscored the UKGCC’s role as the leading voice of UK-Ghana private sector collaboration, stating: “As part of the global network of British Chambers of Commerce, we provide a vital platform for our members to connect, collaborate, and thrive. We actively advocate for a business-friendly environment both in Ghana and the UK, and we are committed to doing everything we can to support the success and sustainability of our member businesses.”

She encouraged businesses interested in strengthening trade and investment between the two countries to engage with the UKGCC, assuring that the UKGCC remains open and ready to assist.

The forum concluded with business delegations to the ministries of Finance, Trade, Agribusiness & Industry, and Food and Agriculture.

The 2016 Champions League final at San Siro was remembered for drama, penalties, and Real Madrid’s historic “La Undécima.”

For referee Mark Clattenburg, the night took an unusual turn in the tunnel when Sergio Ramos asked him to stop Alicia Keys from performing.

UEFA had invited Alicia Keys to be the first artist to perform live at a Champions League final, treating the Milan crowd and millions of viewers worldwide to hits like Girl on Fire and Empire State of Mind. While fans enjoyed the spectacle, the players grew restless.

“In the tunnel before the game, I’ve got Koke and Ramos having a go at us. Alicia Keys was singing, and they wanted her to finish because they wanted to get on the pitch. And I’m like, are you telling me to go and tell Alicia Keys to stop singing in the stadium? I can’t do that,” Clattenburg later revealed in an interview shared by Goal.

The tension followed Clattenburg as he led the teams out.

“As I’m walking up the steps in San Siro, the balls are on the plinth and all I’m thinking to myself is: don’t drop that ball,” he admitted.

Once underway, the final lived up to its billing. Ramos himself opened the scoring, Atlético hit back through Yannick Carrasco but Real Madrid won the game 5–3 on penalties.

South Africa’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 Fifa World Cup have suffered a major blow after they were sanctioned for fielding an ineligible player.

Teboho Mokoena played in the 2-0 win over Lesotho in March despite the 28-year-old midfielder being due to serve a suspension after accumulating two yellow cards.

A Fifa disciplinary committee has ruled that South Africa breached competition rules, and has imposed a 3-0 forfeit.

The country’s football association (Safa) has been fined 10,000 Swiss Francs ($12,500, £9,340), while Mokoena has been issued with a warning.

‘It’s ending in tears’ – South Africa fans react to FIFA’s punishment

The decision has blown Group C of African World Cup qualifying wide open, with South Africa dropping from top of the table to second place, behind Benin on goal difference.

Only the group winners are assured of reaching next year’s tournament in north and central America.

It also gives renewed hope to Nigeria and Rwanda of reaching the finals, with both of those sides now three points below Benin and South Africa.

Benin travel to Rwanda and Nigeria in the final two round of qualifiers between 10 and 14 October, while South Africa face an away game against Zimbabwe before hosting Rwanda.

Safa has 10 days to appeal Fifa’s decision.

She alleged that the Philadelphia Movement leader’s teachings led her sister to ignore her conventional medicine and rely on his “magical” sobolo during her battle with diabetes, which eventually led to her demise.

In a sermon delivered to his congregation on Sunday, September 28, Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah complained about the constant criticisms he had received from the gospel music star and other NPP communicators.

He called on the main opposition party to bring their communicators and the gospel singer into order. He also threatened not to help the NPP secure victory in the 2028 general elections.

The video of Stephen Adom Kyei Duah warning the NPP about Diana Asamoah and their other communicators’ conduct is below:

Diana Asamoah blames Kyei-Duah for Bawumia’s defeat

Speaking on her morning show on Angel 102.9 FM, Diana Asamoah accused Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah of being an “Antichrist” over his alleged penchant to engage in unnecessary fights with people.

She alleged that the founder of the Believers Worship Centre had never preached the word of God to his congregation in his church.

Diana Asamoah also blamed Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s massive defeat to President John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 elections.

According to her, she immediately realised that the former Vice President would lose the elections after the controversial prophet covered his head with a prayer shawl during his visit to the church before the 2024 general elections.

The gospel musician also claimed that Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah and his members failed to wash the prayer shawl, and as such, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia developed catarrh when he got home after the visit.

She said:

“When I saw the prayer shawl being placed on Dr Bawumia’s head, I said that we (the NPP) had already lost the election. They had never washed it before putting it on Bawumia’s head. He got catarrh when he got to his house.”

Diana Asamoah also questioned why some of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s associates, like Dennis Miracles and Anthony Karbo, failed to reach out to her and secure some prayer shawls she had brought from Israel.

The gospel singer also claimed that Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah’s church would collapse by 2028 and that he had already begun losing his relevance in the media space.

Some personnel from the Ghana Police Service later arrived at the Pottersville church to calm the situation down.

Govt increases Book and Research allowance to GH¢610m – Education Minister

0

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced a significant increase in the allocation for book and research allowances for tertiary education staff, rising from GH¢408 million to GH¢610 million this year.

The announcement comes in response to threats of a nationwide strike by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) over delays in the payment of the allowance.

Speaking at the 22nd UTAG Biennial Conference on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, Mr. Iddrisu assured members that the government remains committed to supporting the academic community. He said the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, was working to ensure the funds are disbursed promptly.

“In the last few months, there was a threat and the semblance of a strike in the name of book and research allowance. I am happy to note that from GH¢408 million for the year, this year the government is committing GH¢610 million to honour your book and research allowance. And that is in process,” he stated.

The increase is expected to ease tensions between government and tertiary education unions, who have long argued that timely and adequate funding for research is essential to improving the quality of teaching and learning in Ghana’s universities, technical institutions, and colleges of education.

Asesewa Police Commander detains Patrol Officers after they intercepted ‘Indian hemp truck’

0

Drama unfolded at dawn on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at the Sekesua Police Station in the Upper Manya Krobo District of the Eastern Region after a police patrol team intercepted a truck carrying more than 100 sacks of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

The three officers from the Eastern Regional Command, acting on intelligence, swooped in on a Hyundai 5-ton truck (ER 760-23) and directed it to the Sekesua Police Station to process the suspects.

However, upon arrival at the station, the suspects reportedly placed a call to the Asesewa District Police Commander, Superintendent Francis Ackah, who later appeared and ordered the arrest and detention of the patrol officers instead.

The unusual turn of events prompted the Eastern Regional Police Operations Commander, ASP Kofi Okyere, to rush to the Asesewa Police Station to secure the release of his men.

Sources told Citi News that Superintendent Ackah refused to release the intercepted truck, insisting he would personally report to the Regional Commander, DCOP Twumasi Ankrah, on the matter.

The two suspects, identified as Sulley Abubakari and Sadat, allegedly told the patrol team they were transporting the consignment from Akateng to Agogo on the instructions of a man known only as “Alhaji” in Accra. Their current whereabouts remain unknown.

The incident has reportedly sparked unrest within the Eastern Regional Police Command, with officers calling on the police hierarchy to launch a thorough investigation into the matter.

Gwiraman Traditional Council launches Egila Yam Festival

0

By P.K. Yankey

Bamiankor (W/R), September 30, GNA- The Gwiraman Traditional Council has launched the Egila Elue Avuyia (Egila Yam Festival) 2025, with a call on the people to forget about their differences and foster peace and unity for an accelerated development.

This year’s festival, launched amidst fanfare, is on the theme “United in Purpose, Advancing in Progress: The Gwira Way Forward”.

It would be climaxed in the last week of November 2025.

As part of the celebration, the Gwira Traditional Council has placed a ban on drumming and noisemaking between October 23 and November 23.

Launching the festival at a colourful ceremony at Bamiankor in the Nzema-East Municipality, Awulae Angama-Tu Agyan, Paramount Chief of the Gwira Traditional Area and President of the Traditional Council, said Gwiraman had not celebrated the yam festival for the past 23 years after the 2001 celebration.

He said an attempt to celebrate it the ensuing year was foiled by another group.

Awulae Angama-Tu Agyan expressed wary that Gwiraman was not showcasing its rich culture, history and tradition to the outside world.

The Paramount Chief called on sons and daughters of Gwira to patronize the festival to make the area a tourist attraction to rake in more revenue to spearhead development of the area.

Awulae Angama-Tu Agyan said the area was deprived in terms of road network, school buildings and extension of electricity and would use the festival to bring national leaders together to respond to developmental needs.

Professor Francis Awuah, Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast and an indigene of Gwira, who was the Guest Speaker, said Gwira was blessed with rich human and mineral resources.

He asked the people to resolve their differences, unite and fight for the development of the area.

He said development could not thrive in an atmosphere of conflict, quarrels and urged them to safeguard the peace in the area.

Prof Awuah advised the people to use the festival as a platform to discuss challenges facing their communities and renew their commitment to building a stronger Gwira.

He mentioned the Teleku-Bokazo to Simpa Junction Road, the Teleku-Bokazo to Banso road and the Gwira-Aiyinasi to Kotukrom stretch to enhance movement within Gwira and open the area to the rest of the Ellembelle and Tarkwa area.

Obrempong Hima Denkyi XIV, Paramount Chief of Upper Dixcove, who chaired the occasion, reminded the people to unite despite their differences and push for development.

” What at all can’t the Gwiraman settle and forge ahead in unity”? he queried and advised the youth who hide behind social media to hurl insults on traditional rulers and even the President of Ghana.

He reminded the youth that, ” our culture frowns upon insults and inflammatory language” and asked them to approach the chiefs with respect to pinpoint their mistakes to them.

Mr Herbert Kuah-Dickson, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Nzema-East Municipality, urged all chiefs to involve themselves and continue to celebrate the festival without any conflict.

He said President John Dramani Mahama was committed to rural development with 80 percent of the Assembly’s Common Fund earmarked for development.

However, unity was key if any meaningful development could be executed in the area and advised the people to forget ahead in unity.

Mr Kuah-Dickson said the Assembly had reached 2.8 million Ghana cedis of the targeted GHc3.0 million Ghana cedis of its Internally Generated Funds ( IGF) for 2025 as of September.

He said last year, the Assembly realized GHc1.2 million being the highest IGF in the Nzema-East Municipality.

The MCE said the Assembly had begun grading the Gwira roads which is the main developmental challenge facing the area.

Mr Kofi Arko-Nokoe, Member of Parliament (MP) of Evaloe Ajomoro-Gwira lauded Awulae Angama-Tu Agyan for restoring the festival to showcase the rich culture, history and tradition of Gwiraman.

He also called on the people to bury their differences and forge ahead in unity and peace.

MP Arko-Nokoe said together with the MCE, he would move to the Training Colleges to assist students from Gwira and elsewhere with their education so that they come to teach in the area upon completion to stem the rampant migration of teachers to other areas.

He said together with the Assembly, the Teachers’ Awards scheme would come into force on March 6, 26, to incentivise teachers to stay in the area.

On the Gwira road network, the MP said though funds were yet to be released from central government for the Big Push initiative, he has teamed up with the MCE to use the DRIP machines to reshape major roads in the area.

Mr Arko-Nokoe assured the people that the road from Teleku-Bokazo to Simpa Junction would be asphalted in due course.

The MP mentioned the construction of a police station at Kutukrom, construction of school buildings as well as fixing the bridge leading to Kutukrom.

He said the Gwiraman Senior High School was grinding to a halt and called on the government to turn its attention to the school.

Mr Arko-Nokoe expressed grave concerns about malmsey and its debilitating effects on the people and to embrace the Responsible Cooperative Mining scheme.

Ghana has made strong progress under the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme and is well-placed for its upcoming fifth review, according to Stanbic Bank Ghana.

The Manager for Global Markets at Stanbic Bank Ghana, Oforiwa Attipoe, said the country’s improved economic performance, fiscal discipline and progress in debt restructuring had boosted investor confidence and placed the economy on a firmer footing.

“The fifth review is not just a check-in; it is a milestone that reflects how far Ghana has come,” Mrs Attipoe told CNBC Africa. “Inflation is down, fiscal controls are stronger, and the country is on track to achieve its targets under the ECF programme.”

Since the $3 billion programme was launched in May 2023, Ghana has received $2.3 billion in disbursements aimed at stabilising the economy and restoring market confidence. Two tranches worth $370 million remain outstanding, with the fifth review expected to be key in unlocking the next release of funds.

Inflation has declined consistently for eight consecutive months, dropping from 23.5 per cent in January 2023 to 11.5 per cent in August 2025. Analysts expect Ghana to meet its year-end inflation target of 10.7 per cent, with a return to single-digit inflation projected in 2026.

The Bank of Ghana has also introduced measures to stabilise the cedi and enhance liquidity in the foreign exchange market, including redirecting inflows from mining companies through commercial banks. These actions have helped strengthen the currency and support trade flows.

The IMF’s fifth review will assess fiscal performance, debt restructuring and structural reforms designed to improve governance and public financial management. Mrs Attipoe emphasised that Ghana’s efforts in these areas were central to maintaining recovery momentum and reinforcing global investor trust.

“With two reviews left before the programme concludes in May 2026, Ghana is determined to maintain fiscal discipline and build on the progress achieved. A successful fifth review will not only unlock additional funding but also signal to global markets that Ghana’s economic turnaround is firmly on course,” she said.

Ghana marked World Tourism Day 2025 with a colourful and culturally rich celebration of the Some Tutuza Festival in the Volta Region, under the global theme: “Tourism, and Sustainable Transformation.”

The national event spotlighted the transformative power of tourism and culture in promoting peace, unity, and economic development.

The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, led the national celebration at the Agbozume School Park, where the grand durbar took place, bringing together chiefs, government officials, and citizens from the Aflao, Some, and Klikor traditional areas.

“Every visitor who enters Ghana through Aflao first experiences the warmth, hospitality, and cultural richness of our people. We must showcase our community as a place of opportunity, unity, and peace,” the minister stated, emphasizing the need to invest in cultural festivals as tools for national pride and community development.

Representing President John Dramani Mahama, who is attending the UN General Assembly in New York, Dr Goosie Tannoh, Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development, delivered the President’s message.

He lauded the people of Some for preserving their cultural heritage and promoting peace through tradition.

“This festival is a living testimony to our ancestors’ generosity and our people’s courage to build a peaceful future,” Dr. Tannoh remarked, while highlighting the government’s flagship 24-Hour Economy Program.

He noted that the initiative would support youth in creative arts, agro-processing, and cooperative ventures through improved infrastructure and innovation.

The Some Tutuza Festival, held under the theme “Consolidating Peace and Unity for Social, Cultural, and Economic Development,” served as both a cultural celebration and strategic platform to advance Ghana’s tourism agenda.

The event fused traditional rites, performances, and dialogue to draw national and international attention to the Volta Region’s rich heritage.

Torgbuiga Adamah III, President of the Some Traditional Area, expresses his heartfelt gratitude to the Government of Ghana, especially to President John Dramani Mahama, for his visionary leadership and continued support for the sustainable development of the region.

He extended his sincere appreciation to the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts for choosing the Volta Region as the host of this year’s World Tourism Day celebration, thereby bringing well-deserved national attention and in recognition of their exemplary leadership and contributions, both President John Mahama and the Minister/MP were honored by the people of the Some Traditional Area.

The celebrations welcomed a lot of dignitaries, including the National Chairman of the ruling NDC party, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Directors of the Ministry, and Agency heads, and traditional rulers, alongside other distinguished personalities and government officials.

Some Tutuza Festival, commemorating the Some people’s historic migration from Keta, is a vital annual celebration that fosters cultural revival, community pride, and economic stimulation through cultural tourism.

By integrating World Tourism Day with the Some Tutuza Festival, stakeholders hope to amplify Ghana’s global cultural presence, strengthen cross-cultural exchange, and boost tourism-led development across the country.

He said that he bought the vehicles from a legitimate car dealer, who had paid all the required fees.

Wontumi under investigation for international organised crime – Deputy AG

He added, “I want to end this conversation here. One day, God will speak for me.”

The Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem Sai, disclosed that the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for multiple criminal offences.

Ntim Fordjour invokes scripture to back Bawumia’s 2028 bid

0

New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has invoked scripture to rally support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid to lead the party in 2028, stressing that God does not discriminate by religion or ethnicity in choosing leaders.

Speaking on the second day of Dr. Bawumia’s campaign tour of the Central Region on Tuesday, September 30, ahead of the NPP’s January 31, 2026, presidential primaries, Rev. Ntim Fordjour said the Bible affirms that “God is no respecter of persons” and can anoint anyone to lead His people into prosperity.

“I am a Christian and a Pastor. My Bible tells me that God is no respecter of persons. He can anoint anyone regardless of religious or ethnic background to lead his people into prosperity,” he declared to party faithful.

Rev. Fordjour stated that he has witnessed “such an anointing” upon Dr Bawumia, describing the former Vice President as the one chosen to lead the NPP into its “promised land” in 2028.

He called on members of the NPP to set aside religious and ethnic considerations and focus on competence in selecting the party’s presidential candidate.

“Let’s put aside our religious beliefs and ethnic backgrounds and look for the most suitable for the job,” he urged.

The Assin South lawmaker further encouraged NPP delegates and leaders to evaluate all prospective candidates from both the NPP and NDC ahead of the 2028 general elections.

He argued that Dr Bawumia stands out as the most formidable candidate capable of securing victory for the party.

“Let’s consider all the people seeking to lead both the NPP and NDC in 2028 and compare who in the NDC can compete with Dr Bawumia. Let’s not miss this opportunity to secure power in 2028,” he emphasised.

Franklin Cudjoe slams endless dialogues on illegal mining ahead of presidency’s CSOs engagement

0

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has urged the government to move beyond dialogue and take decisive action to tackle the illegal mining crisis (galamsey), warning that the time for endless discussions has long passed.

His remarks come in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s invitation to leading civil society organisations (CSOs) for a high-level meeting at the Jubilee House on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 12:00 noon.

Chamber of Indigenous Business slams Fourth Estate over “misleading” NLA-KGL deal

0

The Chamber of Indigenous Business and Investors (CIBI) has strongly criticised The Fourth Estate and the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) over what it describes as an unethical and misleading investigation into the National Lottery Authority’s (NLA) licencing arrangement with KGL Technology Limited.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Mr. Alistair Nelson, the Chamber accused the Fourth Estate of sensationalism and gross misrepresentation of facts regarding the NLA-KGL deal, particularly claims that a GHS3 billion lottery business was handed over to KGL for only GHS170 million annually.

CIBI argued that the so-called “contract” between NLA and KGL is not a procurement contract, but a licencing agreement, issued legally by the NLA Board under the National Lotto Act, 2006 (Act 722) and its accompanying regulations.

“It is very misleading for the Fourth Estate and MFWA to conclude that the NLA-KGL deal is a contract. That is very unprofessional,” the statement read.

Addressing the claim that KGL was given a GHS3 billion business, the Chamber said historical data from NLA shows that the Authority had never generated GHS3 billion annually since its establishment.

According to the CIBI, the total revenue generated by the NLA over eight years (2013–2020) was approximately GHS2.7 billion, with GHS1.3 billion paid out in winnings during that period.

The statement also defended the value of the KGL arrangement, pointing out that between 2019 and 2024, KGL’s annual payments of GHS170 million to the Consolidated Fund far exceeded the amounts paid by the NLA itself between 2013 and 2020. “In fact, the deal with KGL is one of the best the NLA has had,” the Chamber said.

CIBI further noted that KGL bears all operational and financial risks involved in the 5/90 USSD lottery game — including infrastructure costs, prize payments, marketing, and taxes — with no state financial input.

The statement also dismissed claims of monopoly, explaining that exclusive USSD codes are standard practice for all licensed lottery operators, with other companies also operating exclusive codes for specific games.

In conclusion, the Chamber called the Fourth Estate’s investigation “bogus” and “malicious,” urging the media to uphold higher standards of accuracy and professionalism, especially when dealing with technical and commercial matters involving state institutions and indigenous businesses.

Stakeholders in the technology and innovation ecosystem have welcomed the newly developed Ghana Artificial Intelligence (AI) Practitioners’ Guide (GAIPG) as a step in the right direction for ethical and localized innovations in artificial intelligence in the country.

Speaking at the official launch of the document in Accra, A renowned public relations and IT communications consultant, Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, asserted that the guidebook was timely for sound policy formulation and legislation to underpin the rapid adoption and integration of artificial intelligence in Ghana.

“As a practical guide that will influence policy, it is highly fulfilling and I’ll encourage tech enthusiasts, innovators and policymakers to explore the provisions and recommendation in the book as we continue to shape AI application in all aspects of our work,” he said.

‘Bahubali forced me into a fight I never wanted’ – Jacob Dickson

0

Ghanaian boxer, Jacob Dickson, has revealed that he never wanted to fight Ernest Akushey, popularly known as Bahubali, before the tragic bout that allegedly ended the latter’s life.

Bahubali passed away on September 23, 2025, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, eleven days after suffering a technical knockout defeat to Dickson at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

The incident has cast a shadow over the boxing community and placed Dickson firmly under the spotlight.

Speaking in an interview with Joel Eshun on GhanaWeb, Dickson explained that the fight was never part of his plans because Bahubali was not in his weight class.

Jacob Dickson reveals he once dreamed of playing for Man United like his idol Ronaldo

“I didn’t even have that mindset to fight with Bahubali because he’s not my weight class. Moreover, I had never thought about fighting with him,” he said.

According to Dickson, it was Bahubali who initiated the challenge after watching his June 2025 fight against Andrew.

“Bahubali watched my recent fight with Andrew in June and because I couldn’t get the chance to win, he thought I’m a weak boxer,” Dickson recounted. “Even though he was not my weight class, he thought because of the performance I had, he could beat me.”

Dickson added that Bahubali began taunting him publicly and using social media to escalate the situation.

“He was listening and following people’s advice. He started throwing shots, using his phone to do videos and post online,” he explained. “It came to a time that it became worse, so I even came out to say any promoter that will do it, I’ll fight. So he went to call the promoter, Lord Coleman, to arrange the fight.”

The fight eventually went ahead on September 12, 2025, ending in tragedy and leaving Dickson shaken.

US backs new $10 billion airport in Ethiopia

0

A ground crew member guides an Ethiopian Airlines at Bole International Airport A ground crew member guides an Ethiopian Airlines at Bole International Airport

The US says it will support the construction of a new international airport in Ethiopia, marking President Donald Trump’s first major business initiative in the country.

Trump’s special envoy said Washington will provide significant financial backing for the new airport at Bishoftu, about 40 km south of Addis Ababa. The facility is intended to ease pressure on the overused Bole International Airport and bolster Ethiopian Airlines’ position as Africa’s largest carrier.

The $10 billion airport will cover 34 square km and handle international passenger and cargo traffic, while Bole will continue to serve domestic operations.

US Senior Advisor for Africa Massad Boulos announced the plan on his X account on September 29, following a state visit to Ethiopia.

“I’m just coming from Ethiopia, and I came back straight to Unga (United Nations General Assembly) from Ethiopia, where we talked about our support for the new airport project, and it is going to be probably the biggest airport and one of the biggest in the world. It’s a $10 billion project, probably more,” Boulos said.

“The DFC and other institutions are supporting. We are also working closely with many projects relating to Boeing. Boeing has a very, very strong partnership, as we know, with Ethiopian Airlines, with Royal Air Maroc, with many other airlines across the continent including Gabon and Angola and the DRC – and many others, too numerous to list,” he added, referring to the US International Development Finance Corporation.

The greenfield Bishoftu International Airport will initially accommodate 60 million passengers, expanding to 110 million, and transport 3.73 million tonnes of cargo annually, according to a prospectus.

Groundworks are expected to begin late 2025, with Phase I scheduled for completion by November 2029.

The project will also feature an “airport city” with shopping malls, hotels, recreation areas, and direct rail and expressway links to Addis Ababa.

In August, the African Development Bank (AfDB) signed an agreement to act as lead arranger and global coordinator to mobilise nearly $8 billion of the project’s cost, with plans to finance $500 million, subject to board approval.

Ethiopian Airlines and the AfDB had signed a letter of intent to fund the airport project in Abusera in March.

The airport, designed by Dubai-based Sidara, will include four runways, capacity for 100 million passengers a year, and parking for 270 aircraft. It is seen as a key driver of regional growth and part of Ethiopian Airlines’ 2035 strategy focused on network expansion, infrastructure, and human capital development.

AfDB views regional transport as central to its integration agenda, alongside food security, energy security, and clean energy transition.

Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier, continues to expand aggressively. In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024, it reported record revenues of $7.02 billion, up 14 percent year-on-year, and carried 17.1 million passengers, with 13.4 million on international routes and 3.7 million domestically.

King Charles waves knife in air after unusual visitor to London home causes havoc

King Charles donned his sunglasses as he welcomed a prize-winning cow to a special party in the garden of Clarence House today, which stomped into one of the hedges

The King welcomed a very unusual visitor to Clarence House today for a special party.

Charles hosted a reception in the garden of his London residence to mark £50million from his Duchy Originals sales that have benefitted more than 1,000 good causes. The monarch, who donned sunglasses for the party, met pedigree Sussex cow ‘Poppy’, from a Duchy farm, who bagged an invite to the event.

Handler Leighton Snelgrove, 26, thanked the King “for all you do for young farmers”. The breeding cow, which has won multiple prizes at country shows, made the King laugh as she knocked over a small table and stomped into a low hedge. Leighton said to the King: “Sorry about your garden.”

Turning round, the King, smiling and looking relaxed at the antics, said to other guests: “Don’t push her back into my boxed hedge.” Minutes later, after the King walked away to speak to other guests Poppy the cow urinated on the pathway.

Speaking afterwards, Leighton, of Black Ven Farm, Uckfield, East Sussex said: “She [Poppy] was amazing and thoroughly enjoyed it and it was great to talk to him about farming. I said thank you for everything you do for young farmers. The King has been a huge support and encouraging to young farmers.”

Asked about Poppy’s run-in with the hedges, Leighton said: “I didn’t want footprints over his lawn. He said it’s fine, don’t worry about it. He’s an inspiration to younger generations.”

The King held the reception to mark 35 years since establishing Duchy Originals to support sustainable farming and provide a market for organic goods from small farmers.

The party also celebrated the £50million raised from sales that has been handed to the King Charles III Charitable Fund (KCCF) and shared to more than 1,000 charities since the Duchy joined forces with Waitrose in 2009.

Representatives from many of the charities attended including the Soil Association, Prince’s Trust International, Coast, BirdLife International, Plantlife, and The King’s Foundation.

The King also met Mex, 9, a cockerpoo, and Monty, a 20-month-old Australian labradoodle, from Wag & Company, which sends dogs into care homes to help elderly people combat loneliness. Charles also saw new Duchy Originals product ranges and eco-friendly packaging.

In a speech, Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London, Sir Kenneth Olisa, said: “The 50 million raised to date has had a profound and far-reaching impact towards transforming lives and building sustainable communities.”

James Bailey, Waitrose executive director, also gave a speech saying the organic initiative carries out an “enormous amount of good.” And said the Duchy brand will “continue to fulfill the organic wish”.

He hailed the charity money legacy as “your success”, adding it was an “honour to share it with you”. Charles finished the engagement by cutting a Waitrose fruit cake and waving the knife in the air. He said: “I hope you enjoy the cake!”

All aspirants are honourable, but.. – Wontumi [Listen]

0

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, has expressed confidence that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will win the party’s upcoming presidential primaries.

He explained in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, that Bawumia is effectively going unopposed in the primaries and that those who supported him in the last elections have not regretted their choice.

Wontumi said party members are united in their support for Dr. Bawumia and believe he will emerge the winner, noting that the NPP is a single party working together.

“I see that Bawumia is going for the primaries unopposed, although we are having elections. Those who voted for him in the last elections have not regretted their choice,” he said.

Wontumi stressed the importance of respectful campaigning, urging party members to avoid insulting or attacking other candidates.

He said all discussions and engagements should be encouraging and focused on the party’s unity.

“The only thing I won’t condone is insulting others. You can campaign for your candidate, but do not attack anyone. All talks should be encouraging, not insulting,” he noted.

He also praised the quality of the candidates contesting the primaries, stating that Dr. Bawumia is the most suitable choice given his experience as former Vice President and as a previous presidential candidate for the party.

Wontumi added that it is his wish for Dr. Bawumia to win both the primaries and the general elections so he can serve as president for all Ghanaians.

“I am happy the NPP has great people contesting, unlike other parties, but Bawumia is the best among them. He has served as Vice President and was our previous candidate. It is better we give him the chance. It is my wish he wins the primaries and the general elections so he can become president for all of us,” he said.

According to a recent poll by Global Info Analytics, Dr. Bawumia leads the NPP presidential primaries with 47% of delegate support.

The poll, published on September 29, 2025, shows him as the clear front-runner, although a significant number of delegates remain undecided, indicating that the race could still change in the coming weeks.

Govt promises to include new teachers’ 13-month salary arrears in 2026 Budget

0

Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem has assured the coalition of unpaid teachers that payment of their 13-month salary arrears will be included in the 2026 budget presentation.

This follows the submission of a petition by the group to the Finance Ministry as part of their protest demanding government action on salary arrears.

Receiving the petition on Tuesday, September 30, Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem reassured the group that the payment of their salary arrears would be incorporated into the next budget presentation, scheduled to be presented to Parliament next month.

“I was a teacher, and I was posted to teach, and I was not paid for 8 months. I can relate perfectly well with all of you. The Finance Minister [Dr Ato Forson] says he sympathises with you, and he has briefed President John Dramani Mahama, and he has been given the green light to make sure he fixes your problem.

He added, “The Finance Minister will present the next budget, and he will make provision for all of you to be catered for; you should be very happy that your problem will be fixed; that is the good news. You will be paid.”

Meanwhile, the protesters remain dissatisfied with the development, describing it as inhumane, as they must wait several more months to receive their unpaid salaries.

“This is inhumane; we’re not ready for the 2026 budget. I’m even disappointed that he couldn’t even come to talk to us, but sent his deputy. It means we’re not worth his attention,” he stated.

MFWA empowers young investigative journalists to lead fight against corruption

0

Newly-trained investigative journalists under the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) program have been urged to use their craft as a weapon against corruption and impunity in Ghana.

Procurement breaches, conflicts of interest, abuse of office and other corruption activities which have eaten deep into the social structure of Ghana deny citizens development.

The young investigative journalists are empowered to lead the fight against corruption, spark accountability to bring meaningful change.

Ghana’s score on the Corruption Perception Index has shown a long-time stagnation of the fight against corruption, staying below the 50% mark since 2012.

In a call for deeper tackling of the canker, the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) through its capacity-building on anti-corruption and accountability, has reiterated the craft of young investigative journalists as effective tools for reforms.

Seasoned investigative journalists, including Associate Editor of the Fourth Estate, Seth Bokpe insist that true sense of journalism is recognized by the impact of deep-cut investigative journalism.

“We do not tell stories for telling sake. Some are told as passing information to the public, but majorly, what should be pursued are ones told to make an impact in our society through investigative journalism. The stories should reflect in ways that can drive a change in society.

“That should be the hallmark of every journalist. The impact is necessary to bring changes, draw benevolent people to help the disadvantaged. Even if your story changes the life of one person, it brings a lot of satisfaction than any form of enticement that you may get from the work,” he said.

The capacity-building on anti-corruption and accountability through investigative journalism project, benefitted 30 young journalists across the Ashanti, Northern, and Greater Accra regions.

The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) project, with funding from the German Development Cooperation was titled, “Countering corruption through accountability journalism and improved freedom of expression environment in Ghana”.

Beneficiaries were taken through the corruption landscape of Ghana, and story ideation, whilst dissecting investigative reports to understand investigative journalism targeted at public accountability.

Executive Director, Africa Centre for International Law and Accountability (ACILA), William Nyarko, says an in-depth story done well can effect significant social change in Ghana.

“It’s been engaging. We have shown them where they can get their stories to investigate, ones that bother on procurement breaches, conflict of interest, private gain, as well the methods and tools to gather and execute their investigations. The journey is difficult and challenging, but just one report done right will create significant changes in Ghana,” he said.

This initiative is part of the Participation, Accountability, Integrity for a Resilient Democracy (PAIReD) programme, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), co-financed by the EU and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), and implemented by GIZ in cooperation with the Ministry of Finance.

Government to allocate 5% DACF to spatial planning at MMDAs – Ahmed Ibrahim

Correspondence from Bono Region

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced that the government will allocate five percent of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) to support spatial planning activities across Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) starting next year.

The minister made this pledge at the maiden National Dialogue on Decentralisation and Responsive Governance forum in Accra, following a strong appeal from the National President of the Local Government Service Association of Physical Planners, Planner Gifty Nyarko, who is also the African Ambassador for Inclusive Urban Governance and Climate-Resilient Development.

Planner Gifty Nyarko had emphasised the urgent need for intervention, noting that many MMDAs continue to neglect spatial planning in their development priorities. She emphasised the crucial role of spatial planning in managing urban growth, infrastructure, and environmental sustainability, urging the Ministry to provide targeted support to enhance the sector.

In response, the Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to evidence-based planning, stressing that the five percent allocation would enhance the capacity of MMDAs by providing tools, data systems, and human resources needed to implement orderly and climate-resilient development frameworks.

Whilst urging the various assemblies to use part of their Internally Generated Funds (IGF) in the interim to support spatial planning activities while awaiting the release of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), the minister also appealed to local authorities to fast-track permit acquisition processes to curb unauthorised developments that undermine effective land use and infrastructure coordination.

He reaffirmed the government’s broader “Reset” agenda to strengthen decentralisation, assuring stakeholders that the move reflects a deliberate effort to equip local governments with the tools and resources needed to manage development proactively and inclusively.

Ghana considers Russian Floating Nuclear Plant for short-to medium-term power needs

0

Dr Robert Sogbadji is the Deputy Director in charge of Alternative and Nuclear Energy Dr Robert Sogbadji is the Deputy Director in charge of Alternative and Nuclear Energy

The Deputy Director in charge of Alternative and Nuclear Energy at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Dr Robert Mawuko Sogbadji, has said that Russia is in talks with Ghana over a possible deployment of three floating power units (FPUs) of 100MW each to help strengthen the country’s power supply in the short term.

He explained that floating nuclear plants are increasingly attractive because of their flexibility, mobility, and scalability.

Speaking to GhanaWeb Business at the just-ended World Atomic Week in Moscow, Dr Sogbadji emphasised that the idea of generating power from a vessel is not new to Ghana, citing the country’s experience with the Karpowership project.

Russia, Ghana to explore floating nuclear power deal

“We are already producing power from a floating vessel in the form of Karpowership, so this concept is not new to us. With our Nuclear Regulatory Authority and the Environmental Protection Agency in place, coupled with guidance from the International Atomic Energy Agency and Russia’s Rosatom regulator, the process will be well-governed,” he stated.

Short-term solution ahead of large-scale nuclear power

According to him, FPUs could help bridge potential electricity shortfalls while Ghana advances plans for a large-scale, land-based nuclear power plant capable of generating over 1,000MW.

He emphasised that floating power units are easier to deploy in the short term, providing a stop-gap solution for the country’s growing power needs.

On financing, Dr Sogbadji stressed the importance of structuring a model that balances affordability with industrial demand.

“Because this is nuclear, it cannot be entirely private-sector driven. Government must participate, even if only by 10–15%, but in a way that keeps costs low for both domestic and industrial consumers,” he explained.

He added that Ghana is not seeking outright ownership of the floating units, as this could push costs higher. Instead, the government is considering a public-private partnership (PPP) model, focusing on independent power production under strict regulatory oversight.

Grid capacity not a constraint

Addressing concerns about whether Ghana’s grid can absorb nuclear-generated electricity, Dr Sogbadji dismissed fears of transmission challenges.

“GRIDCo’s transmission losses are within internationally accepted limits. Integrating a 100MW baseload from each floating power unit will not be a problem. Even Karpowership delivers 400MW, so handling FPUs will not present difficulties,” he assured.

He further praised nuclear power for its efficiency, reliability, and ability to provide consistent baseload electricity to support Ghana’s industrialisation agenda.

South Africa says its optimistic US trade initiative AGOA will be renewed

The priority for South Africa is to get AGOA extended The priority for South Africa is to get AGOA extended

South Africa’s trade minister Parks Tau said he was optimistic that the United States’ flagship trade initiative with Africa, which expires later on Tuesday, would be renewed.

Tau’s office said in a statement that the overall message from the minister’s recent trip to the United States was that there was “broad support for the renewal of AGOA (the African Growth and Opportunity Act) in Congress across the aisle”.

“On the period of renewal for AGOA, the consensus suggests that AGOA may be renewed for a short-period of between one-to-three years to allow Congress to introduce changes and improvements to the programme,” the statement said.

The priority for South Africa is to get AGOA extended even if it is just for a short period, Tau added.

South Africa is trying to persuade President Donald Trump’s administration to lower the 30% tariff imposed in August on its exports to the U.S.

Tau met U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer this month in Washington as part of the negotiations to reduce the tariff.

Majesty Mensah Looks All Grown, Shares Warm Hug With Nana Ama McBrown In Heartwarming Video

Actress Nana Ama McBrown melted hearts after warmly embracing Shatta Wale’s son, Majesty, during a recent visit by his mother, Michy. The celebrated actress expressed amazement at how big and grown Majesty looked, sparking affectionate reactions online.

Majesty, who turned 10 in July 2025, celebrated the milestone with a lavish science-themed birthday party at a water park in Accra. Michy, his mother, went all out for the celebration, which was attended by friends and family.

In a video shared online, McBrown is seen happily hugging Majesty as Michy, Shatta Wale’s former partner, visited her home. The actress exchanged a few words with the young boy, even playfully asking him a question that seemed to confuse him. The wholesome moment quickly made waves on social media.

McBrown later linked up with Michy, and the pair shared another warm interaction that further delighted fans.

Majesty’s 10th birthday was celebrated on July 11, 2025, at a popular water park in Accra. The party was science-themed and featured games, water slides, and a lively pool session. Michy herself joined in the fun, jumping into the pool while fully dressed in her jalabia.

While the event was widely praised, Shatta Wale was noticeably absent. The dancehall star and Michy have had a strained relationship since their breakup in 2022. Abronye accepts NPP disciplinary summons, calls for live broadcast to justify Ken Agyapong’s ‘anti-Christ’ actions

0

The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has issued a response to a disciplinary summons from the party.

He expressed his readiness to appear before the party’s National Disciplinary Committee and demanded that the proceedings be broadcast live.

This follows confirmation by the NPP that the party’s General Secretary, Kodua, has formally petitioned the Committee over what he described as a series of alleged misconduct by Mr Baffoe, which includes public insults and unsubstantiated allegations deemed damaging to the party’s unity and reputation.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, September 30, Abronye acknowledged receipt of the party’s communiqué and said he was fully prepared to honour the summons.

He, however, went further to accuse Kennedy Agyapong, a senior figure within the NPP, of actions he claimed have been detrimental to the cohesion of the party.

“I hereby write to indicate my full preparedness and willingness to appear before the Committee to comprehensively lay bare and substantiate the antichrist actions and inaction of Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, which have undermined the cohesion and integrity of our party,” Abronye stated.

Mr Abronye is calling for the entire disciplinary process to be conducted in the public eye.

“Since the referral was made public, I therefore propose that the sittings of the committee be conducted openly and broadcast live, so that the rank and file of our noble party may have the opportunity to witness, at first hand, the manifest antichrist posture and conduct of Hon. Kennedy Agyapong,” the statement continued.

Health Workers Reject Postings To Elubo Hospital

0

It has emerged that most of the health workers, particularly nurses who are posted to the Elubo Government Hospital in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region, refuse to accept the postings.

Zachariah Musah, the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, who disclosed this, expressed worry about the situation.

He said the challenge, coupled with inadequate accommodation for health personnel, is hindering the hospital’s ability to provide essential care to the people of Elubo and its environs.

The 65-bed facility with state-of-the-art equipment which was opened in 2023, is currently grappling with severe shortage of staff.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that even though the health facility has the capacity to absorb 120 health workers, only 45 are currently available.

Interacting with the Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, the Medical Superintendent stated, “We have two key obstacles – the reluctance of some nurses to accept postings to the facility and lack of accommodation for staff.”

He said, “We recently opened the theatre, and most of the functional units have machines that are state-of-the-art, but they remain closed because we do not have trained personnel to use them.”

For his part, the Regional Minister, Mr. Nelson, could not fathom why nurses posted to the facility decline the postings.

“It beats my mind why when some nurses and health workers are transferred or posted to a facility, they can simply refuse and still remain on the payroll,” he stated.

He pointed out that while some health facilities are overstaffed, others are facing shortages.

He pledged his commitment to finding solutions to the hospital’s two key challenges, but called on those responsible for managing the situation to take action.

“As the government seeks long-term solutions to the staffing crisis, it is essential to transform this multi-million-cedi investment into a fully operational healthcare hub,” he added.

He appealed to the health workers to focus more on patients’ care, and proposed for the establishment of an office dedicated to safeguarding patient interests.

A-G must withdraw Adu-Boahene case — Parties Without Representation in Parliament

0

The Parties Without Representation in Parliament (PWREP) is demanding the Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine to immediately withdraw the ongoing prosecution of former National Signals Bureau (NSB) Director-General, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, describing the case as “legally shaky, strategically reckless, and a waste of judicial resources.”

‘You kept paying a dead person for 26 months? – PAC questions TTH management

0

The Tamale Teaching Hospital The Tamale Teaching Hospital

During the sitting of the Public Accounts Committee on Monday, September 29, 2025, it was discovered that the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) had been paying a deceased staff member for the past 26 months.

This revelation follows the recent Auditor-General’s report, which uncovered the payment of unearned salaries totalling GH¢1,449,000.

Members of the Committee expressed outrage upon learning that the hospital had validated the salary of the deceased employee over that period.

Appearing before the Committee, the hospital’s Director of Administration, Dr Emmanuel Sena Kwasi Donkor, admitted that only GH¢303,558.68—representing approximately 21 percent of the total amount—had been recovered so far.

“We were able to recover some amounts. Before we got here, we had received letters from some banks stating that they had stopped transferring the funds to the government chest,” Dr Donkor told the Committee.

He appealed for parliamentary intervention to facilitate the full recovery of the funds.

“Maybe at the end of this session we will make a prayer to this House for the House to make an order directing those banks to transfer [the money],” he said.

Dr Donkor further disclosed that the hospital had submitted the names of implicated individuals to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for investigation and recovery.

“EOCO has written back requesting the files of the people involved, and we have submitted them,” he added.

Despite these assurances, PAC members expressed dissatisfaction with the hospital’s explanation.

Ranking Member on the Committee, Samuel Atta-Mills, questioned the hospital’s validation process, citing the case of a deceased employee whose salary continued to be paid long after his death.

“Habib Napare – date of separation was 2022. This guy had died. Didn’t you go to the funeral? And you validated this dead person for 26 months? And now you are coming to tell Parliament to do what?” Atta-Mills fumed.

The Committee has since demanded greater accountability from the hospital, warning that weak validation systems contribute to financial leakages that undermine the public purse.

Abena Osei-Asare is the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament Abena Osei-Asare is the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament

The Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, Abena Osei-Asare, could not hold back her disappointment over the failure of the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku; and the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine; or their deputies, to appear before the committee.

During the committee’s public hearing on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, Osei-Asare asserted that the two ministers should know that either they or their deputies must be present when Parliament calls them to answer questions about infractions in the books of their ministries that had been captured in the Auditor-General’s Report.

“Ministry of Agriculture, is this the first time you are attending upon the Public Accounts Committee?… So, then, why do you not know what is expected of you and then you do something else? Because you always come with the political head and then the principal spending officer, which is your chief director. And so if the minister or deputy is not in…

“Respectfully, we are all serving our nation in different capacities. Let’s attach seriousness to what we do. We called your minister. Your minister is not here. It’s the same with the AG and Minister for Justice… They also failed to attend upon the Public Accounts Committee,” she fumed.

PAC grills government statistician over alleged lunch, per diem irregularities

Osei-Asare, who is the Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, went on to say that the failure of the ministers to appear before the committee when they are scheduled affects its work.

She sent a caution to the ministers who failed to appear before the committee to ensure that either they themselves or their deputies are present on the rescheduled dates.

“We are all discharging our mandates in different capacities. Let’s respect each other’s mandates and do what is expected of us. We will have to reschedule you. When you do this, you throw our programme off board. And so we don’t expect this to happen again.

“So, tell the Minister of Agriculture that we expect to see him or his deputy heading the delegation. And it’s the same with the Attorney General and Minister of Justice. He should come or his deputy should come. That is how we address queries… that is what the protocol is when Parliament calls you on the Auditor-General’s Report. It is what is done every time. And I don’t expect that under this government they want to do anything different,” she reiterated.

Gun licensing in Ghana still manual, renewal system ‘daunting’ – Interior Minister

0

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has revealed that Ghana’s gun registration process remains fully manual, posing significant challenges for both applicants and law enforcement.

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, the Minister explained that acquiring a firearm license involves several cumbersome steps, including writing directly to the Interior Minister, background checks by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) or the Police CID, fingerprinting, and fee payments.

He noted that while the registration process is to control the number of guns in the country, the manual system also complicates renewals since firearm licenses are issued per calendar year.

“One of the challenges that we have is that everything is manual. For example, if you want to possess a firearm, you have to write to the Minister for the Interior, who then forwards it to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) or the police CID. They will then do a background check and advise the minister.

“After you go to the police CID, they will take your fingerprint, and then you pay the necessary fees, and then they grant you the license.

“You may take your license in November, and by December, it has expired. The law is such that the one-year mandate is within a particular year, that is, from January 1 to December 30. But because all these are manual, it becomes a daunting task,” he added.

He added that talks are underway to ensure that the process is moved onto a digital platform to make the gun registration process easier.

The Interior Minister disclosed that discussions are ongoing to transition the firearm licensing process to a digital platform to streamline operations and reduce loopholes.

Earlier, Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno explained that while licenses are valid for one year, many gun owners fail to renew them on time, leaving the police unaware until incidents occur.

His responses came after the Chairperson of the PAC, Abena Osei Asare, raised questions about the registration process during the hearing, prompting the minister’s remarks.

“To register a gun means that you must acquire the license to possess a firearm as an individual through our firearm commission, just like you have a driver’s license. When you are given the licence, you possess the gun for a year.

“After that, you have to go back and renew that license. But the problem we have is that people actually go straight to renew the licenses. It isn’t until something happens that the police get to know that such a license holder has not renewed,” he said.

In a sermon delivered to his congregation on September 28, Adom Kyei Duah complained about the constant bashing he received from gospel musician Diana Asamoah and other NPP communicators.

Diana Asamoah, who is closely affiliated with the NPP, has accused the popular man of God of being a charlatan and playing a role in her sister’s death.

She claimed that his teachings led her sister to ignore her conventional medicine when she had diabetes and relied on his ‘magical’ sobolo, which proved fatal.

“Look at this evangelist who is representing the NPP and who constantly attacks me. So if she’s representing the NPP and doing that, what Philadelphia member do you think would vote for the party?” he said.

Adom Kyei Duah added that if the attacks continue, he would not help the party to win the next general elections in 2028, leading to their loss.

“What haven’t your communicators said about me? To date, they continue to attack me. So when it’s time for the next election, you’d better go ask for permission from your evangelist before you come and ask for my prayers,” he added.
