Mahama seeking to redefine his image – John Kwapong

0

Dr. John Osae Kwapong, a research fellow at CDD-Ghana, has stated that President John Dramani Mahama is making a deliberate effort to reshape public perception of his leadership in his second term.

He emphasized that Mahama’s approach—calling for humility, accountability, and prudent governance—signals a conscious effort to distinguish his current administration from his first.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, February 8, 2025, Dr. Kwapong noted that President Mahama appears to have learned from his first presidency, his defeat in 2016, and his subsequent attempts to return to power before winning in 2024.

His comments follow ongoing debates and concerns surrounding Mahama’s past administration, particularly the persistent power outages (“Dumsor”) that led to job losses and widespread criticism of his presidency.

Dr. Kwapong also highlighted Mahama’s approach to appointments, emphasizing his focus on a younger generation of leaders.

According to him, President Mahama’s directives to appointees after their swearing-in demonstrate his commitment to fulfilling the promises made in his manifesto.

Mahama has already taken steps to reinforce this image by implementing measures aimed at modesty and fiscal responsibility.

He has banned non-essential travel for government appointees, stressing the prudent use of state resources. At the swearing-in of 17 ministers on Friday, February 7, he cautioned against arrogance and extravagance, underscoring the importance of accountability in governance.

Additionally, he has instructed Fisheries Minister Emelia Arthur to collaborate with the Finance Minister to secure funding for the completion of the long-abandoned Anomabu Fisheries College in the Central Region—an effort aligned with his broader commitment to development and efficient governance.

“Overall, I believe President Mahama is setting the right tone. He wants this presidency to look, feel, and be appreciated differently than his first. The statements and sentiments he is expressing—such as advising against arrogance, urging officials to listen to the public, and demonstrating commitment—are all aimed at shaping a new perception of his leadership.

“In terms of his appointments, two things stand out. One is the generation he is tapping into, which suggests he is not only thinking about this administration but also the long-term future of his party and the next generation of leaders,” he stated

Entertaining the Minority caucus doesn’t mean we are weak – Ayariga

0

Mahama Ayariga is the Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga is the Majority Leader

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has dismissed claims that the ruling party appears weak in Parliament, stating that true strength lies in successfully implementing policies rather than resorting to aggressive tactics.

Speaking in an interview with Kafui Dey on GTV monitored by MyNewsGH, Ayariga emphasised that despite the perceived drama during ministerial approvals, the majority’s objective was achieved without shutting down dissenting voices.

“The hallmark of democracy is allowing debate, not silencing the opposition. ur decision was to ensure all vetted nominees were approved. I let the minority have their say, but in the end, we got what we wanted—approvals in record time,” he said.

Responding to suggestions that he was being bullied by the Minority, Ayariga clarified that the strategy was intentional.

“You don’t misuse your numbers to suppress debate. You let the process take its course and then make the final decision. That’s exactly what we did.”

He further explained that the Speaker’s decision to suspend some whips was an effort to instil discipline among MPs.

“We have seen behaviours not befitting of Parliament, and the Speaker’s move is a step towards restoring order. Many new MPs are still learning the rules and etiquette, and with time, they will adjust.”

When asked about the dress code for Parliament, he noted that while Fridays allow for African wear, formal dressing is generally required.

“You cannot wear a T-shirt or jeans to Parliament. If you do, expect to be heckled by your colleagues,” he added.

Mahama Ayariga reaffirmed his commitment to upholding democratic values while ensuring that government business proceeds smoothly.

“We achieved our goal without being bullish. That is real political strength,” he concluded.

President Mahama working to bring Mali, others back to ECOWAS – Ablakwa

0

By Benjamin A. Commey

Accra, Feb 8, GNA – Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, has disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama is working to bring back the three countries that recently opted out of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger broke away from the West African bloc in January this year.

The split was sparked after the three countries refused ECOWAS demands to restore diplomatic rule.

All led by military juntas, the three subsequently formed what they called the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

In an interview with the media on Saturday, Mr Ablakwa said the engagement with the three countries was underway.

“Already, he (President Mahama) has moved in to ensure that Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso come back into the ECOWAS fold. He has appointed a special envoy, he is holding talks. He is scheduled to pay state visits in the next few weeks,” he said.

“He is leading the charge to make sure that right within our region, all those who are adopting a posture of exclusion and wanting to isolate, he brings them back into the fold. If he succeeds – and I have no doubt if you look at what he has achieved so far – I have no doubt that President Mahama will succeed in bringing back all those who are breaking away.”

Although the breakaway was not a new thing on the continent, having a united front remained the best option in improving the well-being of the people, Mr Ablakwa said.

“If you look at the history of our continent, this is not new. We’ve had the Ghana-Mali-Guinea union which, if you like, served as a precursor to even the then Organisation of African Unity.”

“So, every now and then you will have this blocs, this many groupings, but everyone recognises that the only way, as Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah said, is to unite, put our forces together, have a common market, have a common bank, have a common standby force.”

Outlining Ghana’s foreign policy for the next four years, the Minister said the Government would continue to pursue a neutral policy that was non-aligned, being a friend to all countries and an enemy to none.

“In all of what we do, our fundamental objective is to ensure that the decisions we take inure to the benefit of our people. We are not going to be caught up in the ways and proxy wars, conflicts and contestations of other powers,” he stressed.

In that regard, he indicated that the  country would not hesitate to join other regional and global blocs such as the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) bloc if it considered the conditions as favourable, as a way of expanding its trade frontiers.

BRICS is a partnership of five leading emerging markets and developing countries, founded on historical bonds of friendship, solidarity and shared interests.

Together, the Federative Republic of Brazil, the Russian Federation, the Republic of India, the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of South Africa represent over 42 per cent of the global population, 30 per cent of the world’s territory, 23 per cent of Gross Domestic Products (GDP) and 18 per cent of global trade.

On January 1, 2024, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia, all joined BRICS.

Mr Ablakwa said: “If you look at the international forces now, you cannot ignore BRICS. You are talking about a combined market population of more than 40 per cent of the total population of the world, combined GDP of more than 27 trillion and they have really put in place structures which are quite enticing.”

“So, any day, I will recommend that we should have more options, be building more relationships, forging more partnership moving forward so that we are not restricted and limited.”

Additionally, he said, security would play a critical role in the country’s foreign policy consideration to protect Ghanaians from external threats such as terrorism.

Bawumia secured 41.75% in Dec 7 presidential election not 38% – Nkansah calls out NPP members using lower figure

0

Former CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has criticised some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for quoting 38% as the figure obtained by the party’s flagbearer in the 2024 presidential elections.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, 8th February, he pointed out that the official results from the Electoral Commission (EC) showed that the NPP secured 41.75% (42%) of the votes, not 38% as some members have claimed.

I’ll never take policy decisions without engaging stakeholders – Sam George

0

The Minister for Communications, Digitalisation, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, revealed plans to tackle the escalating cost of data in Ghana.

According to him, he had an engagement with management from the relevant ministries yesterday to lay the groundwork for the formation of a committee that will assess and propose solutions to the issue.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, February 8, Mr Sam George added “I have given them the running order.”

“Hopefully, in the next 14 days, we will be setting up a committee an inter-ministerial committee to look at the cost of data.”

He further expressed his strong belief that tangible progress could be made by the end of the year.

“It is my fervent belief that before the end of this year, we should see some movement in the data offerings,” Mr George added.

The proposed committee will explore two key approaches to address the issue in reducing the price of data or increasing the value offerings for consumers.

“There are two modules here, you can either have a reduction in price of data or an increase in value offerings. We are going to look to look at those modules,” he said.

The inter-ministerial committee, according to Mr George, will be a collaborative effort, bringing together representatives from multiple ministries and industry stakeholders.

“The committee is going to have representatives from the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Finance, and other key groups, including the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), the Chamber of Telecommunications, and content producers,” he explained.

Onasis Kobby: Skills development is the game changer in Ghana’s energy sector

0

Aside from the audacious vision of the erstwhile NPP government that birthed the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation, PHDC is poised to play a pivotal role in Ghana’s economic transformation by fostering a skilled workforce for the oil and gas sector. Prioritising skills training is essential for ensuring competent local participation, job creation, and industrial growth. Furthermore, this initiative aligns with President John Mahama’s 24-hour economy policy, which seeks to maximise productivity and employment opportunities. A well-trained workforce will enable continuous operations in oil refineries, exploration sites, and energy infrastructure, making Ghana a competitive player in the global petroleum industry.

The oil and gas industry demands a workforce skilled in upstream, midstream, and downstream operations. Training programs tailored for technicians, engineers, plant operators, safety officers, and logistics personnel will ensure that Ghanaians can secure high-paying jobs.

A well-trained local workforce will reduce dependency on expatriates, ensuring that oil revenues circulate within the Ghanaian economy. These employment opportunities will enhance household incomes and living standards, reducing youth unemployment. Ghana’s Local Content & Participation Law (LI 2204) mandates that 70%-80% of employment in the oil and gas sector must be reserved for Ghanaians. Skills training will support this initiative by equipping local businesses, service providers, and contractors to actively participate in the petroleum supply chain. Training will empower Ghanaian-owned oilfield service companies to bid for contracts and provide engineering, transportation, maintenance, and environmental management services.

By keeping petroleum industry profits within Ghana, the sector will stimulate economic growth and create business opportunities for SMEs. A robust skills development strategy will significantly enhance Ghana’s oil refining capacity, processing efficiency, and infrastructure management. The benefits include Higher national revenue from increased crude oil production and local refining, reducing reliance on fuel imports. Diversification of Ghana’s economy by expanding petrochemical industries, gas processing, and downstream services. Empowerment of SMEs, leading to new businesses in energy logistics, safety compliance, and equipment maintenance. By focusing on industrial training, refinery operations, and pipeline management, Ghana can become a leading petroleum hub in West Africa, supplying fuel and petrochemicals to regional markets.

President Mahama’s 24-hour economy policy aims to create round-the-clock industries that enhance economic productivity, employment, and competitiveness. Skills training in oil and gas will directly support this vision in several ways: Continuous Operations in the Petroleum Sector: Oil refineries, drilling rigs, and gas processing plants must operate 24/7 to maximize production. A well-trained workforce will ensure that night shifts, maintenance work, and emergency response teams can function effectively.

Sectors such as oil logistics, security, power generation, and facility maintenance will benefit from trained workers operating on rotating shifts. This will significantly expand employment opportunities for young people and artisans. Countries with a skilled workforce attract more oil and gas investments. Ghana’s petroleum hub, supported by world-class training programs, will position the country as a preferred investment destination in Africa. Reducing Reliance on Foreign Expertise.

Training programs should prepare Ghanaian workers for the energy transition, including renewable energy, carbon capture, and hydrogen fuel technology. A skilled workforce will increase Ghana’s refining capacity, ensuring stable fuel supply and price control, and reducing import dependency.

Recommended Skills Training Programs for PHDC

A. Technical & Vocational Training (Hands-on Workforce Development)

Target Group: Technicians, artisans, and operational staff

• Oil & Gas Welding and Fabrication – API 1104, ASME certification

• Pipeline Engineering & Maintenance – API 570, API 653 training

• Instrumentation & Control Systems (SCADA, PLC, DCS) – Automation and plant operations

• Refinery & Petrochemical Plant Operations – Training for process plant operators

Strategic Partnerships for PHDC’s Training Initiative

To ensure world-class skills development, PHDC must collaborate with global training institutions, universities, and industry leaders

• Schlumberger NExT Training – Petroleum engineering & well control

• PetroSkills (USA) – Workforce training for upstream and downstream operations

• OPITO (UK) – Offshore safety and HSE certifications

• American Petroleum Institute (API) – Refinery safety & pipeline maintenance

• Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST) – Engineering training partnerships

• University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) – Vocational and technical education

• Takoradi Technical University (TTU) – Specializing in pipeline, welding, and refinery training

• Tullow Oil Ghana – Internship & technical skills transfer

• Kosmos Energy Ghana – Local capacity-building programs

• Ghana Gas Company – Gas processing & infrastructure training

• Bulk Oil Storage & Transport (BOST) – Logistics & downstream training

 Implementation Strategies for PHDC

To maximize the impact of skills training, PHDC should:

✔ Empower and resource PHDC with cutting-edge learning infrastructure.

✔ Launch a 24-hour Skills Training Model to support round-the-clock economic growth.

✔ Provide Government-Backed Scholarships & Apprenticeships for young professionals.

✔ Ensure Training is a Mandatory Part of Petroleum Hub Licenses to enforce continuous workforce development.

✔ Utilize Digital Training Platforms (e-learning, VR simulations, and remote training technologies).

Investing in skills training through strategic partnerships and structured programs will:

✔ Create thousands of sustainable jobs for Ghanaians

✔ Reduce reliance on expatriate labour and increase local participation

✔ Enhance Ghana’s competitive position as a petroleum hub

✔ Support President Mahama’s 24-hour economic vision

✔ Boost national GDP and long-term industrialisation

By making skills development a core focus, PHDC will drive economic transformation, enhance industrial productivity, and position Ghana as a global energy powerhouse. The institution has projected to train 2,000 Ghanaians in various skills within the Oil and Gas Industry which is worth pursuing given the reasons stated in my article.

I was surprised to see KFC, Starbucks, other corporations in Ghana

0

An Irish tourist, Seon, has disclosed that he was astonished to see global corporations like Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and Starbucks branches in Ghana.

According to him, he had always perceived Africa as a rural part of the world where such big corporations would not operate until he decided to tour Ghana and other countries on the continent.

“I always perceived Africa as a particularly rural part of the world. But as I walked through Accra, it was more similar to what I would expect back home. I saw big corporations that we’re used to in the Western world. Simple things like seeing KFC and Starbucks were a surprise to me,” he said during an interview with Vicemen TV on YouTube.

Seon also noted that he enjoyed his tour in Ghana, particularly enjoying local delicacies like banku and groundnut soup, which he liked very much.

He said that he was also impressed with the level of safety, hospitality, and cultural experience he had in Ghana and would encourage others to visit the continent in the future.

“I felt a little scared upon arrival at first, but last night I tried banku with my family, mixed with a kind of groundnut soup and beef, and it was delicious.

“What I would say to anyone who has thoughts about coming to Africa is that it’s a fantastic place to be. You meet lovely people, you’re really safe, and you get a fantastic cultural experience that you won’t get anywhere else in the world,” he added.

How can you appoint someone who confuses cassava with cocoa? – NDC communicator slams Mahama over Randy Abbey’s appointment

0

Dr. Randy Abbey and President John Mahama Dr. Randy Abbey and President John Mahama

A leading communicator of the National Democratic Congress, Kojo Yeboah, has criticized President John Dramani Mahama for appointing Dr. Randy Abbey as Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, questioning his suitability for the role.

In a scathing remark, Yeboah mocked the appointment, claiming Dr. Abbey can barely distinguish between a cassava stick and a cocoa tree, implying that he lacks a farming background.

On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Dr. Abbey, who also serves as Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, was appointed CEO of COCOBOD by President Mahama as part of his administration’s efforts to reset the country’s economic trajectory.

However, during an interview with TV XYZ, Yeboah, while acknowledging the quality of Mahama’s ministerial appointees, criticized the decision to make Dr. Abbey the head of COCOBOD.

“People applauded the president when he started appointing his ministers because they were very competent, but the appointment of CEOs didn’t sit well with many,” he said.

He further questioned Dr. Abbey’s credibility and political alignment.

“Did you see any NDC member as part of Randy Abbey’s entourage when he went to COCOBOD? Someone who can’t distinguish between a cassava stick and a cocoa tree has been put in charge of COCOBOD,” Yeboah remarked.

He also accused Mahama of sidelining loyal NDC members in favor of individuals who did not contribute to his electoral victory.

“Why is he appointing outsiders over the NDC members who fought for his victory? Have you seen anyone from the Zongo caucus appointed?” he quizzed.

Passport application fees too high – Ablakwa

0

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed grave concerns about the high cost of passport application fees in the country.

He argues that the current fees pose a financial burden on many Ghanaians and pledged to review the pricing structure.

“A passport is a fundamental right for every citizen, not a luxury.

We must ensure that the cost is reasonable and accessible to all,” he stated.

Ablakwa, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency was sworn into office on Friday, February 7, added that the situation is worrying and must be addressed.

He assured the public that addressing the high fees would be a priority under his leadership at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Many Ghanaians, especially students and low-income earners, struggle to afford passports.

This should not be the case, and we must find a way to ease the financial burden,” he added.

He further explained that a comprehensive review of the cost structure would be conducted to identify areas where adjustments could be made without compromising service quality.

“We will examine operational costs, explore potential subsidies, and find ways to make passport acquisition more affordable while maintaining efficiency,” he emphasised.

Ablakwa also highlighted the importance of digitisation in reducing administrative expenses and improving service delivery.

The foreign affairs minister assured Ghanaians that his ministry would prioritise affordability and accessibility in passport services.

He called for public engagement and stakeholder consultations to ensure that any reforms reflect the needs of the people.

“We must strike a balance between sustainability and fairness. My goal is to make passports more accessible to all citizens, regardless of their financial status,” he concluded.

He expressed these concerns while speaking on Accra-based TV3 on Saturday, 8th February.

Muntari tips Mohammed Kudus for Black Stars captaincy

0

Mohammed Kudus is a midfielder for the Black Stars Mohammed Kudus is a midfielder for the Black Stars

Former Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari believes Mohammed Kudus is destined to captain the Black Stars in the future but disapproves of the technical team’s recent decision to hand him the armband.

Muntari described the move as premature, even though he acknowledged Kudus’ natural leadership abilities and remarkable talent.

Kudus, who plays for West Ham United, was appointed captain by head coach Otto Addo in October 2024 after Thomas Partey’s withdrawal from the squad due to injury.

The 24-year-old midfielder led the team in back-to-back games against Sudan in Ghana’s 2026 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Unfortunately, Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the tournament were dashed after those encounters.

Muntari stressed that while Kudus will undoubtedly become captain in the future, it should be a gradual process.

“Kudus, no matter what, is going to be the captain of the national team one day,” he said.

“Let it be smooth for him, don’t just rush him. He doesn’t need the armband, but he commands on the field. He carries the whole nation on his shoulder, and he plays with us.

Ghana’s national team is set to return to action in March 2024 for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, hoping to bounce back after their AFCON disappointment.

Ghana’s cocoa export revenue drops to $1.7 billion

0

The world’s second-largest producer of cocoa, Ghana, has experienced a significant decline in its 2024 export earnings, which have dropped to $1.7 billion the lowest level in 15 years.

According to data from the Bank of Ghana, cocoa export earnings have fallen below the $2 billion mark, marking a sharp 25.4% decrease over the past year. This decline is primarily driven by a reduction in cocoa production, which has decreased by over 11% during the same period.

A key factor behind this decline is the widespread illegal mining (galamsey), which has severely harmed cocoa farms and caused significant environmental damage. This has led to a sharp decrease in cocoa yields, negatively impacting local farmers and the country’s economy as a whole.

In addition to the environmental harm caused by galamsey, Ghana’s cocoa industry is also grappling with the persistent challenge of the Cocoa Swollen Shoot and Virus Disease (CSSVD). This affects about 17% of the country’s cocoa trees. This viral disease has weakened the health of cocoa plantations, leading to further reductions in production.

Approximately 23% of the country’s cocoa trees are classified as overaged, moribund, and unproductive. These trees have reached the end of their productive lifespan, contributing to the overall decline in output. As a result, a massive rehabilitation effort is urgently needed to restore these farms to productivity.

The combined effects of these issues mean that only 60% of Ghana’s total cocoa tree stock is still productive, while a significant 40% is considered technically redundant.

Vetting chaos probe marred by ‘regular parliamentary politicking’

0

Samuel Obeng, Executive Director of Parliamentary Network Africa, has expressed his disappointment over the parliamentary politicking that has characterised the vetting chaos probe.

The Minority has called for the immediate replacement of Emmanuel Bedzrah as Chairman of the ad hoc committee investigating the violence that erupted during the vetting process.

The Minority alleges that Bedzrah has shown prejudice in his public statements and has a conflict of interest.

Speaking on the matter in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Friday February 7, Obeng emphasised the importance of the issue and the need for a unified approach to address the public perception and reputation of Parliament.

“It is quite unfortunate that for an important matter of this nature we are seeing the regular parliamentary politicking, caucus stance, and all of that playing out. I say important because this is a matter that goes to the heart of the reputation, the public perception of Parliament, and what have you, and so I thought that all MPs irrespective of their sides will be interested in the process that seeks to better the public image of Parliament,” Obeng stated.

He acknowledged that parliamentary strategies and practices are expected to be adopted by various caucuses to address specific matters.

However, Obeng stressed that the current situation requires a different approach.

“Of course, this is the house where you expect that various strategies and practices will be adopted by various caucuses in ensuring that they deal with a particular matter in order to be able to make a win,” he noted.

Reflecting on the public’s perception of the disturbances in Parliament, Obeng highlighted the need for transparency and accountability.

“I think that for a matter that the public saw. It was in the full glare of the public, the disturbances that went on in Parliament. The public had a certain perception about it. The public expects a certain outcome from this whole process.

“We had expected that Parliament and the members of the various sides would have dealt with this matter differently than the way they are doing,” he explained.

I support NDC foot soldiers chasing out any NPP appointee who is refusing to leave office – Former NEIP boss

Kofi Ofosu Nkansah is the former Chief Executive Officer of NEIP Kofi Ofosu Nkansah is the former Chief Executive Officer of NEIP

The former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has expressed solidarity with members of the ruling National Democratic Congress party for ousting appointees from the previous government.

According to him, there is no justification for an appointee of the former New Patriotic Party government to remain in office after their appointing authority has left and handed over to a new government.

In a Facebook post on February 6, 2025, Ofosu Nkansah questioned the yet-to-resign Akufo-Addo appointees, asking whether they would have been given the opportunity to serve had the NDC appointees in opposition failed or refused to leave office.

“I support NDC foot soldiers chasing out any NPP appointee who is refusing to leave office. If NDC appointees had not left, would we have gotten opportunities to also serve?” he quizzed.

Ofosu Nkansah further referenced how, even during the NPP’s time in government, some appointees were removed from office or reshuffled to manage other sectors.

He expressed concern over why some individuals are finding it difficult to resign, thereby subjecting themselves to controversy and ridicule.

“Even in the same government, the president can appoint you today and remove you tomorrow so what’s the point in resisting the president’s directive?” he added.

His comments follow the recent controversy surrounding the termination of the appointment of SIC MD Hollistar Duah-Yentumi, who, in turn, refused to hand over to her successor, James Agyenim-Boateng, appointed by President John Dramani Mahama.

Duah-Yentumi also filed a lawsuit against the state institution and James Agyenim-Boateng, accusing them of wrongful termination. However, she has since withdrawn the lawsuit.

Okudzeto Ablakwa reveals evidence that shows Airport Hills house is owned by Jordanians and not his sister

Minister of Foreign Affairs and North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa Minister of Foreign Affairs and North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has outrightly denied accusations that he owns a residence at Airport Hills which he allegedly registered under his sister’s name.

During a TV3 interview on February 8, 2025, he urged his critics to substantiate their claims with evidence.

Ablakwa, who emphasised his compliance with the Assets Declaration Act, provided proof that the property in question is actually owned by a Jordanian named Husni Altheebeh.

“…Husni Altheebeh, our landlord is a Jordanian,” he clarified, presenting a copy of his tenancy agreement from the estate managers of Airport Hills.

“I challenge them to put out that evidence that shows that the East Legon Hills residence belongs to me and that I’ve put it in my sister’s name. That’s absolutely untrue. That property doesn’t belong to me,” he retorted.

Sworn into office on February 7, Ablakwa also explained that MPs receive rent allowances as part of their service terms which puts him in a position to afford rent for the residence.

“What they failed to tell the Ghanaian people is that MPs receive rent allowance,” he pointed out.

He clarified that his residence at Airport Hills is legally covered by his rent allowance, a common practice for MPs without official government accommodations.

Ablakwa criticized the spread of misinformation aimed at tarnishing his reputation, emphasizing the need for factual discourse in politics.

“It is important that we focus on facts and not allow misinformation to mislead the public,” he stated.

Reaffirming his commitment to transparency and accountability, he encouraged the public to seek the truth and resist being misled by baseless accusations.

“I have always upheld transparency, and I will continue to serve with honesty and dedication,” he concluded.

It said additionally, Eni had also brought to the President’s attention some new short and medium-term exploration and development opportunities.

NDC communicator slams Mahama over Randy Abbey’s appointment as COCOBOD boss

Ghana’s inflation, debt, and cedi depreciation worsened under NPP

0

The Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr. John Kwakye, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration for its handling of Ghana’s economy, stating that the government has failed to make significant improvements over its eight-year tenure.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, February 8, Dr. Kwakye discussed various economic indicators with host Selorm Adonoo, arguing that the NPP administration had not steered the economy toward stability and sustainable growth.

“Where they took the economy from, it was not in a good place even though we were told by the previous administration that we had turned the corner. IMF projected growth for 2024 was just 4 percent and it was 3.6 percent in 2016, and that is just marginal growth,” he stated.

One of his major concerns was Ghana’s inflation rate, which, according to the Ghana Statistical Service, stood at 23.5% in January 2024, a sharp rise from the 15.2% recorded in 2016.

He attributed inflationary pressures to the depreciation of the cedi, increased government borrowing, and supply chain disruptions.

Dr. Kwakye also pointed to the rising public debt relative to GDP and the worsening exchange rate, both of which have affected businesses and the cost of living.

“Inflation for January is said to be 23.5 percent, and it was 15.2 percent. Public debt to GDP is now 72 percent as of November 2024. It was 58 percent in 2016, and the exchange rate is now hovering around GH¢15.

“They took it from GH¢4.2, so you will see that over the eight-year period, the economy has not improved,” he remarked.

His comments add to growing concerns over the country’s economic outlook as Ghana faces persistent inflation, debt challenges, and currency depreciation

Gov’t to revamp GIHOC distilleries to boost job creation, export

0

The government has unveiled plans to revamp GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited to enhance its operational capacity and generate employment in support of the 24-hour economy initiative.

Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Madam Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, announced this during a working visit to the company on Friday. She reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting GIHOC’s growth and sustainability.

The visit aimed to assess the current state of the company and identify ways to increase productivity, create jobs for Ghanaians, and expand exports to generate foreign exchange and curb inflation.

Established in 1958 as a state-owned entity, GIHOC Distilleries specializes in alcoholic beverages. However, the company currently struggles with a GHS 300-million debt burden and outdated machinery, despite having a skilled workforce capable of driving its operations.

“The good thing about GIHOC is that they produce quality products that are well respected both locally and internationally. Once we understand the challenges, we will provide the necessary support—whether in financing, machinery, or labour because we believe GIHOC can be a significant employer,” Madam Ofosu-Adjare stated.

She emphasized the need to retool the company to take full advantage of the 24-hour economy, operate in three shifts, and capitalize on international trade agreements such as AfCFTA, as well as the UK and EU markets.

The minister also pledged the Ministry’s support in promoting GIHOC’s products on international platforms while ensuring the availability of raw materials.

Mr. Jones Borteye Applerh, Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GIHOC Distilleries, expressed confidence that revamping the company would play a crucial role in economic transformation.

He highlighted key challenges hindering the company’s full potential, including reliance on machinery installed in 1964, an inability to service debts, and inadequate marketing efforts.

Mr Applerh reaffirmed Management’s commitment to collaborating with the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry to make GIHOC more attractive to investors.

“With the right resources, GIHOC can significantly increase its exports, earning higher foreign exchange to help reduce inflationary pressures,” he added.

Shocking accusations have been made by controversial media personality Afia Schwarzenegger against the family of deceased Ghanaian politician Akua Donkor, alleging that they had abandoned her body at the Ridge Hospital mortuary and wasted GH₵300,000 intended for her funeral.

Instead of making sure the former presidential candidate was buried with dignity, Afia Schwar accused Akua Donkor’s family members of squandering the money they were given in a recent TikTok video.

She said the family says they used some of the funds to renovate the home where Akua Donkor’s burial was scheduled to take place, and the remainder was utilized for her one-week memorial service.

Without holding back, Afia Schwar expressed her dissatisfaction, calling the family opportunistic and greedy.

Ghana Premier League ‘in a sorry’ state – Sports Minister Kofi Adams

0

Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, is disappointed with the happenings in the Ghana Premier League, labeling it as “in its sorry state.”

The country’s top-flight competition is facing several challenges, including poor officiating, lack of a headline sponsor, and absence of broadcast rights holders.

It hit a new low in hooliganism when Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Frimpong “Pooley” was stabbed to death during a Week 19 clash against Nsoatreman in Nsoatre.

Adams admits there is work to be done to restore the league to its former glory.

“Our Premier League is in its sorry state,” Kofi told Luv Sports.

“Underfunded, poor discipline, [poor] corporate governance system, fan indiscipline, lack of security, we are not even coaching our fans.

“We need to look at all these areas to try and up our game.”

The 49-year-old was sworn in by the President John Mahama on Friday with his Excellency describing Ghana Sports as “in shambles” and charged Kofi to “restore” Ghana’s sporting pride.

Kofi replaced Mustafa Ussif, who served as Minister of Sports from 2021 under the New Patriotic Party, led by Nana Akufo-Addo.

Meet the only ministerial nominee who was rejected by the Appointments Committee of Parliament

0

Reverend Dr. Kwesi Owusu Bi was rejected for the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry position Reverend Dr. Kwesi Owusu Bi was rejected for the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry position

In Ghana’s Fourth Republican history, it is rare for ministerial nominees to be rejected by the Appointments Committee and denied a potential ministerial position.

For such an occurrence to take place, the reasons behind it must be of significant concern—possibly unpardonable or too serious to be overlooked by the committee, which holds the mandate to assess and determine the expertise and capabilities of nominees in handling and executing their roles, should they be appointed.

However, Reverend Dr. Kwesi Owusu Bi made history as the only nominee to be outrightly rejected by the committee.

In 2007, Dr. Owusu Bi was nominated by then-President John Agyekum Kufuor as the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry-designate.

However, his nomination faced rejection by the Appointments Committee by a majority vote, chaired by Freddie Blay and including members such as Alban Bagbin.

The committee cited inconsistencies in his statements and falsehoods in his submissions, particularly concerning a specific housing project, as the reasons for his rejection.

The charge stemmed from controversy surrounding GH¢30 million allocated to him by the Upper Denkyira District Assembly as part of payment for the construction of a teachers’ bungalow in one of the towns within the district, as reported at the time by The Chronicle.

In its investigation, the committee found that the nominee was not truthful in his claims that he had refunded the money after being unable to undertake the project.

Read the original article published on GhanaWeb in 2007 on Dr. Owusu Bi’s account of what transpired

Reverend Dr. Kwesi Owusu Bi, whose nomination as Deputy Minister was blocked by the Appointments Committee of Parliament has observed that the Committee did not treat him fairly because he told the truth and nothing but the truth, when he appeared before it.

The Freddie Blay Chaired Appointments Committee disqualified the nominee on the grounds that he was not consistent and truthful in his submissions before the Committee during his vetting and therefore could not be cleared to handle a deputy Ministerial position.

The Minority leader, Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin was blunt in his submission on the disqualification of the nominee when he said, “we need to know the kind of pastor we are dealing with.”

In an interview with The Chronicle yesterday the Reverend Minister of God who was on the verge of assuming additional position as Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and PSI could not resist pouring out his frustration and disappointment following his disqualification by the Committee.

“If I say I was able to sleep on the day my disqualification was announced, I will be telling lies. I could not sleep because I could not understand why I was disqualified after I have told the Committee the truth on all matters,” the Reverend Minister ranted and consistently mentioned the minority leader in his submission giving clues to his conviction that Hon. Bagbin could have been a major cause of his disqualification.

It is believed that what caused the disqualification of the nominee was a controversy over some ¢30million that was given to him by the Upper Denkyira District Assembly as part of payment for the construction of a teacher’s bungalow in one of the towns in the District.

The nominee was questioned whether he actually received that said amount and whether he returned the money to the Assembly after the project could not be executed. He told the Committee that he returned the money of his own volition, but the Committee later submitted that the nominee had not been truthful to it on the issue.

Another matter was whether the nominee had ever been an Assembly and Presiding Member of the Assembly and the Committee thought that his responses to these issues were inconsistent.

Rev. Owusu Bi, however, declared he could not understand what the Committee expected from him, especially on the GH¢30million issue. He said he after taking the money for research into how the building project could be executed, the research later failed and he refunded the money.

“When you take money for research and the research fails you are not even required to refund the money. A lot of people have received monies for research into a cure for HIV/AIDS but so far no cure has been obtained, do those researchers have to refund the monies they received for the research? But even in my case, I did not keep the money but refunded it so I don’t know what the Committee required from me on this matter,” the disqualified nominee fumed.

“I was asked whether I have been a Presiding Member before and I said no, but when you read a publication in the Graphic it says that the Committee claims that its investigations later revealed that I had been a Presiding Member before, but that is not true,” Reverend Owusu Bi further charged.

Asked whether he would appeal against the decision of the Appointments Committee, the disqualified nominee said he was not conversant with the procedures and noted that if he got himself well informed about what options were opened to him, he would then take a decision.

“You see I have to consult with a few people then I will know what decision to take. Sometimes if you rush in taking certain decisions, you may be perceived as challenging authority,” he stated.

He told The Chronicle that he would be holding a Press conference tomorrow at the Ayeduase School park near the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi to let the public know that he did not lie to the Committee and also establish his innocence as a man of God.

Though he did not want to reveal the details of what he would be telling the press tomorrow, he told the paper that he would prove that what he told the Committee was just the truth and nothing else.

“The Committee refused to take what I said as the truth and rather relied on information from other sources to say that I was not truthful in my submissions, but now that I can prove that I told the truth I must let the world not the I did not lie so that at least I clear myself.”

How Spalletti’s advice turned Sulley Muntari into a midfield monster

0

Sulley Muntari is a former midfielder of the Black Stars Sulley Muntari is a former midfielder of the Black Stars

Sulley Muntari was always known for his aggressive style of play, a trait that made him one of the most feared midfielders of his generation.

However, his journey to becoming a tough tackler didn’t happen overnight. It was a skill he developed early in his career, thanks to a pivotal lesson from his coach at Udinese, Luciano Spalletti.

In a recent interview with 3Sports, Muntari shared how Spalletti’s words transformed his approach to the game.

According to the 2010 Champions League winner, his initial lack of physicality limited his playing time until Spalletti urged him to toughen up.

“When I went to Udinese, they wanted to play me, but I was too soft,” he recalled. “One day, Spalletti called me and said, ‘I want you to play, but I’m not comfortable because you’re not aggressive enough. Have you seen how Pinzi plays? Just add a little bit of that,’ he said.”

Taking his coach’s advice to heart, Muntari made an immediate and dramatic change. Within a week, his tackles became so intense that two of his teammates had to be sent to the doctor after training.

“After he told me that, in the span of one week, two players ended up at the doctor’s office because of my tackles,” he said. “By the third day, the doctors didn’t even ask questions anymore. They just asked, ‘Sulley?’ And then treated them,” he added.

However, his transformation was so extreme that even Spalletti had to step in again—this time, to rein him in.

“After the fifth day, the coach said, ‘I asked you to play tougher, but this is too much,’” Muntari recalled with a laugh.

Muntari went on to play over 400 games across the globe, winning multiple trophies, including a historic treble with Inter Milan in 2010.

His relentless style of play cemented his legacy as one of the finest midfielders of his generation.

Public Concern Grows as Rapper Okomfour Kwadee Involved in Police Incident

0

Ghanaian rapper Okomfour Kwadee has recently become a subject of public concern following a tense encounter with a police officer, captured in a video that quickly went viral on social media.

The footage, which shows the celebrated musician visibly distressed and shirtless, portrays a heated exchange between him and an officer. Although the chaotic background makes it challenging to piece together the full story, Kwadee is heard admitting to setting fire to someone else’s belongings.

The video sparked an outpouring of reactions from fans and observers, many of whom expressed alarm over the rapper’s apparent emotional state. The scene, which many interpreted as a reflection of his ongoing personal struggles, prompted widespread calls for assistance and support.

Adding a symbolic layer to the distressing visuals, Kwadee’s hit track “Ofie Nipa” could be heard playing faintly in the background. For many, the song evoked themes of pain and resilience, mirroring Kwadee’s journey through years of hardship.

Fans took to social media to express their sorrow and rally support for the hiplife pioneer. While some questioned the fate of his earnings and royalties, others called on the music industry to step in and help the rapper regain stability.

Why Should Allan Kyerematen Receive Appointment In Mahama Administration

0

According to GhanaWeb. As Ghanaians eagerly anticipate the formation of President John Mahama’s new government, speculation is rife regarding the potential appointment of Alan Kyerematen, a prominent political figure and former Minister of Trade and Industry. Kyerematen, known for his leadership within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and founder of the Movement for Change, could be poised for a significant role, though the exact nature of his involvement remains uncertain.

During his inauguration, President Mahama emphasized a commitment to inclusivity and collaboration, which has fueled expectations surrounding Kyerematen’s potential role in the cabinet. “Today marks the beginning of an era full of fresh possibilities and change as we honour a new government,” Mahama stated, underscoring his vision for a united Ghana. He further noted that, alongside his running mate Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, they are prepared to drive development forward through a shared commitment to an inclusive governance model.

Despite the challenges of reconciling past political affiliations, many are hopeful that Kyerematen may play a pivotal role in Mahama’s administration. Although it seems unlikely he would be one of the 60 ministers in Mahama’s cabinet, there is considerable speculation that he could still wield significant influence within the government.

Kyerematen was among the first to extend his congratulations to Mahama following the president’s electoral victory in December, a gesture that hinted at a possible collaborative future. Shortly after the election, he presented the “Great Transformational Plan” (GTP) to the president-elect, a detailed document containing strategic recommendations aimed at advancing the government’s agenda.

Before resigning to run for the presidency, Kyerematen served as Ghana’s Minister of Trade and Industry under President Akufo-Addo. His experience also extends to the international stage, where he held the position of trade counsellor at the African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) in Addis Ababa, working under the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

As the new government takes shape, all eyes will be on Mahama’s cabinet selections and the potential roles that may be offered to influential figures like Kyerematen. His political acumen and extensive experience could play a crucial role in shaping policies that align with Mahama’s vision for a prosperous and inclusive Ghana.

With the announcement of nominations expected soon, Ghanaians are left to wonder: will Alan Kyerematen emerge as a key player in this new political landscape, or will the opportunity slip away? Only time will tell as the nation watches the unfolding developments with keen interest.

Gov’t will complete major roads in Central Region

0

The government is committed to completing the dualization of the Kasoa-Winneba Road and other key road projects in the Central Region, President John Dramani Mahama has announced.

Speaking during his Thank-you tour in the Central region, he revealed that the work on the first phase of the Kasoa-Winneba Road dualization began late last year, and once completed, the project would improve transportation, facilitate trade, and boost economic activities.

According to him, the second phase will extend from the Winneba Roundabout to the Mankessim Roundabout, while the third phase will connect Mankessim to Cape Coast.

“As phase one progresses, we will secure funding under our Big Push programme to implement phases two and three,” President Mahama said during a durbar of Chiefs and people of the Central Region in Cape Coast as part of his Thank You Tour.

The nationwide tour, which started on January 24 in Ho, Volta Region, allowed the President to express gratitude to Ghanaians for their support in the 2024 elections. A similar durbar was held in Sekondi for the Western Region on February 5.

Addressing the public at the Jubilee Park in Cape Coast, President Mahama highlighted other major road projects, including the Yamoransa-Praso Road and the Cape Coast-Twifo Praso Road.

Additionally, he revealed that the Mankessim Market is among several markets earmarked for modernization under the government’s Market Enhancement Programme.

Reflecting on the election victory, President Mahama attributed the success to the collective efforts of Ghanaians and called for unity.

“We all share responsibility as we embark on this new journey. I am a President for all Ghanaians and remain committed to unity, inclusivity, and ensuring that no region or community is left behind,” he stated.

He urged Ghanaians to move beyond past divisions, emphasizing that “our strength lies in our diversity, and together we will overcome challenges to achieve progress.”

Outlining his vision, the President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to job creation, particularly for the youth.

He stressed that the government would invest in initiatives that provide opportunities for farmers, entrepreneurs, and workers.

“Our 24-hour economy plan is designed to enhance production, productivity, and employment by creating an environment where businesses in agro-processing, manufacturing, and construction can expand through a three-shift system,” he explained.

President Mahama also underscored the government’s focus on infrastructure, pledging to prioritize roads, schools, healthcare facilities, electrification, and access to clean drinking water across all regions.

0

A young Ghanaian woman named Tina is currently seeking refuge under the protection of a pastor after her family experienced a series of mysterious deaths.

According to Tina, nearly all her family members have passed away under unexplained circumstances, leaving her terrified for her own life.

Recounting her ordeal, Tina explained that her late cousin had promised to marry a wealthy married man as his second wife but later reneged on the agreement.

Ofosu Nkansah calls put NPP members using inaccurate 38% figure

0

Former CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has criticised some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for quoting an inaccurate 38% figure as the party’s performance in the 2024 elections.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, 8th February, he pointed out that the official results from the Electoral Commission (EC) showed that the NPP secured 41.75% (42%) of the votes, not 38% as some members have claimed.

Nkansah expressed concern that certain NPP members were deliberately using the lower figure to push their own agenda.

“If you will reduce your own Party’s percentage or use NDC propaganda figure because you want another person as flagbearer, then you are obviously not a ‘correct’ Party person,” he stated.

He criticised those within the party who, in his view, were undermining the NPP’s performance for personal or political gain.

He also called out the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for inflating their own election results.

According to him, while the NDC has been claiming they won 57% of the votes, the actual EC-certified figure was 56.42%, which mathematically cannot be rounded up to 57%.

“NDC has been using 57% meanwhile you can’t round up 56.42 to 57,” he noted, suggesting that the opposition was engaged in misleading propaganda.

As the debate over the election results continues, Nkansah urged NPP members to stick to the official figures and avoid playing into the hands of the opposition.

He emphasised that accuracy in political discourse is essential for party unity and credibility.

“We must be truthful with our own numbers and not fall for misinformation,” he concluded.

Rawlings Foundation petitions Bagbin over unsavoury comment on Zanetor

0

The John Jerry Rawlings Foundation has petitioned Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin to investigate alleged unsavoury remarks made against former President Jerry John Rawlings’ daughter, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament (MP) for Klottey Korle.

In a petition signed by Madam Yaa Asantewaa Agyeman-Rawlings, Executive Director of the Foundation, the organization expressed shock and dismay over unprintable words allegedly uttered by a New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

“Mr Speaker, these toxic and untruthful comments not only tarnish the dignity of Parliament but also damage the reputation of the entire nation,” the petition stated.

The Foundation accused some MPs of using the platform of Parliament to create a toxic political atmosphere, rather than fostering constructive debate.

It emphasized that former President Rawlings, as the first President of the Fourth Republic, played a pivotal role in shaping Ghana’s longest and most successful democratic era. His dedication to rebuilding the nation’s political and socio-economic structures was evident from his emergence in 1979, through his leadership of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), and into the Fourth Republic.

The statement highlighted Rawlings’ tough but necessary decisions in guiding Ghana out of political and economic challenges. It described him as “Ghana’s Strong Man,” who took firm stances on issues of morality and governance at a time when the nation was in dire need of direction.

Internationally, Rawlings was recognized for his commitment to participatory leadership and his strong anti-corruption stance. “It is dishonest for anyone to attempt to diminish his legacy in a moment of reckless speech,” the petition added.

The Foundation also defended Dr Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as an effective and reliable MP since 2017. It noted that her ability to secure her parliamentary seat three times as an opposition candidate was a significant achievement.

The petition condemned the actions of the MP who allegedly interrupted her during parliamentary proceedings, calling it misogynistic and a gross act of disrespect.

“Mr Speaker, it is disheartening and disturbing that the very House expected to safeguard the legacy of past leaders is now the stage for such abuse and offensive behaviour,” the statement lamented.

As an institution dedicated to preserving the legacy of former President Rawlings, the Foundation, on behalf of millions of Ghanaians, formally requested an investigation into the matter.

It urged Parliament to compel the offending MP to take responsibility and retract the defamatory remarks, which were described as inflammatory, despicable, and disgraceful.

The petition concluded by calling for urgent action on the issue.

If Afenyo-Markin is being cheered by NPP to sacrifice himself, NDC will sacrifice him

0

The newly appointed Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, Mustapha Gbande, has urged the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to reflect on his posture and leadership style, warning that he risks being sacrificed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Member of Parliament for Effutu has come under heavy criticism from a section of the public, who accuse him of adopting a hawkish style and unnecessarily obstructing government business in Parliament.

His alleged incitement of chaos during the vetting of ministerial nominees, which led to the destruction of some properties in the ensuing melee, has been widely condemned.

Speaking on UTV, Mustapha Gbande, who is also the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), warned that if the NPP fails to check Afenyo-Markin’s conduct, he risks falling on his own sword, and the NDC will not prevent that from happening.

“I think that the Minority Leader, Afenyo-Markin, should reflect on his posture, his style, and how he intends to lead the Minority. I am just giving him free advice. Yes, the party executives will show solidarity, but if you are misbehaving—for want of a better word—and you are being cheered, you will be singled out. And when you are singled out, everybody else will take cover. Afenyo-Markin has a lot of scandals; there are things we will expose, and he will find himself in trouble. So if he is being encouraged by party leadership to sacrifice himself, we will sacrifice him. I don’t threaten people; I am just stating the facts.”

Gbande alleged that Afenyo-Markin has played a role in depleting the public purse and warned that the government may soon take action against him.

“He should know that if we begin to pursue him, he will be in trouble. Afenyo-Markin must understand that if he misbehaves and we are pushed to act, he will not be the only one affected—it will have broader consequences. The Minority group should not assume that the NDC is passive or naïve. Wisdom is always applied in governing a country.”

Okudzeto Ablakwa pledges leadership of integrity and patriotism as Ghana’s foreign minister

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

The newly-appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has committed to leading with integrity and a profound sense of patriotism.

During an interview on TV3 on Saturday, February 8, 2025, he outlined that his administration would be characterized by transparency, accountability, and a strong patriotic spirit.

Ablakwa, who also represents the North Tongu Constituency in Parliament, was officially sworn in on Friday, February 7.

He promised Ghanaians that his time at the helm of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would focus on advancing national interests, enhancing diplomatic relations, and elevating Ghana’s international profile.

He expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the appointment, acknowledging it as both an honor and a responsibility.

“I want to assure the president and the good people of this country that the task which is such an honourable task, which is to serve your country in any capacity, is one that requires enormous industry, a lot of skill, and discretion. But above all, you must be guided by the principles of integrity, love for country, discipline, and a passion to be innovative and achieve results that impact the lives of the vast majority of Ghanaians,” Ablakwa remarked.

He underscored the significance of ethical leadership in international diplomacy, committing to diligent and honorable service. Ablakwa emphasized the need for robust partnerships with other countries while safeguarding Ghana’s sovereignty and strategic interests.

He views effective diplomacy as crucial for national development and plans to collaborate closely with both local and international stakeholders to further Ghana’s foreign policy goals.

As he begins his tenure, Ablakwa has called for unity and support from all sectors, including government officials, diplomats, and the public at large. He is optimistic that with integrity and patriotism as his guiding lights, Ghana’s foreign relations will see substantial growth and yield enduring benefits for the nation.

Ghanaians will still be happy even If Mahama and his ministers sleep and do nothing

0

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande

The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has stated that Ghanaians would still be happy even if President John Dramani Mahama and his ministers fail to deliver on their promises.

According to him, the main priority was to remove former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration, which he claims brought hardship upon Ghanaians.

Speaking in an interview on UTV on February 7, 2025, Gbande asserted that the mere exit of the previous government has brought joy to Ghanaians.

“If today, Mustapha does not get an appointment, I am still happy because we have been able to remove the thieves. If President Mahama and his ministers sleep on the job without doing anything, Ghanaians would still be happy because we have sacked those who brought hardship,” he stated.

He continued,” If President Akufo-Addo was in power, by now there would have been hardship… but we will work for Ghana.”

Gbande also addressed concerns about political appointments under Mahama’s administration. He emphasized that the president cannot satisfy everyone when it comes to appointments.

“His Excellency John Dramani Mahama cannot even satisfy his family members when it comes to appointments, let alone the entire party. Now, what they have offered me may not be what I expected, but this is what the President said he could give me.

“If you like it, accept it; if not, that’s your choice. In politics, when you win power and positions are shared, some people will get opportunities while others may not,” he explained.

He further acknowledged the difficulty of accommodating all party members, highlighting that Mahama has over 7,000 appointments to distribute, yet the party has over 100,000 competent people.

“Everybody will get something, but President Mahama has only about 7,000 positions to share, while we are talking about over 100,000 competent people. It is inevitable that some will feel left out,” he added.

Inside El Salvador’s ‘hell on Earth’ prison where Donald Trump is to banish US criminals

0

These chilling photos capture the harrowing realities inside the “hell on Earth” jails in El Salvador – where Donald Trump is set to send the US’ violent criminals.

Dozens of inmates are crammed into cells in the prisons in the Central American country. Sentences range from 60 to more than 1,000 years for those incarcerated at Terrorism Confinement Centre (CECOT), the newest of the jails there.

One of the world’s biggest prisons, with a 40,000 capacity (equivalent to almost half the UK’s current prison population), CECOT was built two years ago. It now houses many thousands of the worst of the worst gangsters. In that timeframe, more than 200 prisoners have died in the slammer, it is thought.

For 23-and-a-half hours of the day, the men in CECOT are obliged to squat on mattress-less metal bunks, stacked four-storeys high, like shelves in a B&Q store. They are allowed to speak only in whispers.

Hundreds of members of rival gangs are locked up in the prison

The three meals a day are always rice and beans, pasta and a boiled egg. Their water is rationed by the guards who hand it to them and they use a communal lavatory. They are only permitted to scuttle out of their cages, shackled hand and foot with heads bowed low, for a small number of reasons.

David Jones became the first British journalist to visit CECOT and, in a chilling first-person piece for Mail Online, the reporter recounts his experience. He wrote: “Having visited the US detention facility at Guantanamo Bay and the Robben Island prison where Nelson Mandela was held, the system at CECOT certainly seems harsher. Terrorists held in ‘Gitmo’ are at least afforded some privileges and can undergo rehabilitation programs.

“They have access to books and writing materials, can interact with one another, exercise in the fresh air, communicate with family members, and look forward to occasional visits. In CECOT none of those things are permitted. The sole aim is subjugation.

A tattooed prisoner
A tattooed inmate in the CECOT, considered the largest prison in Latin America

“They are evacuated when the guards charge into the module brandishing machine guns to stage a ‘forced intervention’ and search their bunks. While this clean sweep takes place they must crouch on the floor in perfect rows, with their legs wrapped tightly around the man in front of them and their head pressed against his bare back, forming a human jigsaw puzzle. Anyone who spoils the pattern by fidgeting receives a sharp baton jab to the ribs.

“Shut away in this void, in a subtropical volcanic valley two hours from the capital, San Salvador, with no wifi or mobile signals, these men have effectively ceased to exist. They are the living dead.”

The arrival of inmates at the jail
The arrival of inmates at the jail

By 2015, El Salvador was the world’s murder capital, with 106 killings for every 100,000 of its six million population: a rate more than 100 times higher than Britain’s. However, El Salvador now has one of the lowest murder rates, projecting a ratio of less than one per 100,000 this year.

Prisons like CECOT are, it is said, serving their purpose then. Mr Trump’s intention to send criminals of all nationalities to the jails, though, has divided opinion. El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele “has agreed to the most unprecedented, extraordinary, extraordinary migratory agreement anywhere in the world.”

The US leader believes the move will help make both countries “stronger, safer, and more prosperous” but little El Salvador, on the Pacific coast, has a population of just six million – a tiny fraction of the approximate 334 million living in the US.

‘Portable, an unrepentant rascal,’ Ogun slams singer for attacking officials

0

The Ogun State Government has condemned a Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, over his behaviour towards officials of the State Planning and Development Permit Authority.

PUNCH Online reports that the government officials were attacked at his bar located around Iyana Ilogbo, in the Sango Ota area of the state.

A statement signed by the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, on Friday described Portable “as serial dissident and unrepentant rascal who have been in the habit of assaulting government officials without provocation”.

Akinmade said the latest attack orchestrated by portable and his cohorts against government officials who were on their lawful assignment in the area “was unacceptable and barbaric”, saying such indecent act would be addressed in line with the extant law of the land.

He averred that the behaviour of the Hip-hop artiste is becoming disgraceful and unbearable to the people of the area and the government, considering the degree of pandemonium and panic he causes any time he carried out such unpleasant acts in the area.

Akinmade therefore, reiterated the stance of the Abiodun-led administration to sanitise the state against every unlawful act and entrench decency in all strata, saying the government is serious about the distinct values of Omoluabi ethos at all times.

He said, “We are profoundly taken aback by the unpleasant and uncivil act of the Hip-hop artiste, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable on Wednesday, in Iyana- Ilogbo area of the state where is bar is located.

“The way in which Portable and some set of miscreants he employed in the dastardly act attacked the officials of the OGPDPA is not only bizarre but a confirmation of erosion of Omoluabi ethos in those individuals and indeed a great disgrace to the state.

“Governor Dapo Abiodun totally condemned this primitive and indecent act and reiterated his avowed commitment to just and egalitarian society as he is ready to make any individual flouting the extant law of the land to face the full wrath of the law irrespective of social status and influence.”

Recall that the state police command had on Thursday arraigned nine proteges of Portable before a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, for allegedly assaulting officers of the Ota Zonal Planning office of the Ministry of physical Planning and Urban Development.

Those arraigned were Nurudeen Warris, 21; Adetola Alashe, 25; Samuel Adeleke, 28; Oluwaseun Ayenuwa, 19; Oluwapelumi Adeosun, 20; Gospel Kanu, 20; Precious Ohiegebo, 19; Ifeoluwa Babatunde, 27; and Fatimo Muhammed,26.

The defendants were arraigned on a five-count charge bordering on felony, assault and restriction, armed with cutlasses and guns, conduct likely to cause breach of peace and intending to kill.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

Accra’s heat crisis: How climate change threatens women’s lives

0

i-Button installation at a woman-owned business in Accra

Across Africa’s vibrant landscapes, from the teeming marketplaces to the serene rural farmlands, women stand as the unwavering pillars of their communities. They dedicate their lives to nurturing the land, crafting essential goods, and building sustainable businesses under the relentless African sun. However, with each passing day, the intensifying heat poses a significant threat to their health, their livelihoods, and the well-being of their families. For these resilient women, climate change transcends the realm of environmental concern and becomes a deeply personal struggle.

A beacon of hope

Amid these challenges, the PALM-TREEs Project, an innovative initiative spearheaded by Sustainable Solutions for Africa (SSA), emerges as a beacon of hope. Recognizing the urgent need to understand the human impact of extreme weather events, the project collaborates closely with women and marginalized communities. This collaborative approach ensures the development of climate-resilient solutions that prioritize the unique needs of these populations and amplify their often-unheard voices. A pivotal moment for the project occurred in January 2025, with a comprehensive training programme held at Accra’s Airport View Hotel.

Laying the groundwork for change

During the intensive training program, enumerators underwent rigorous preparation, mastering the installation of i-buttons and the administration of household questionnaires. These meticulous steps were crucial in laying a solid foundation for the upcoming data collection phase, underscoring the project’s commitment to accuracy and comprehensive understanding.

Addressing the assembled researchers, Namo Lawson, a representative of Sustainable Solutions for Africa (SSA), emphasized the critical importance of precise terminology in their investigative work. She articulated that the core aim of the research is to reveal the nuanced ways in which climate impacts vary across individuals, influenced by a complex interplay of factors such as socioeconomic status, geographical location, personal identity, and the strength of community connections. “This focus on intersectionality ensures a more accurate and relevant understanding of the challenges faced,” Ms. Lawson said.

Unveiling the impact of heat stress on women

Building upon the project’s overarching goal, Rachel Yeboah Nketiah, a doctoral candidate at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), presented a compelling study focusing on the impact of heat stress on women in Accra and their adaptive coping mechanisms.

Her research, informed by a detailed heat risk map of Accra, gathered critical data from nine vulnerable communities identified as the most affected by extreme heat: James Town, Mallam Atta, Darkuman, Nima, Kanda, Chorkor, Mamobi, Accra New Town, and Kotobabi. “These communities are anticipated to provide invaluable insights into the specific impact of heat stress on women and highlight the diverse adaptation strategies they employ,” she said.

Methodology and deployment strategies

Further elaborating on the project’s rigorous approach, Mr. Francis Balo, representing Sustainable Solutions for Africa (SSA), provided detailed information regarding the sample size allocation for each community. He then presented a comprehensive overview of the questionnaire’s framework, outlining the specific tools and techniques employed for field data collection.

Prior to the actual deployment, the team conducted thorough simulation exercises, testing the installation of i-button sensors across 27 small business centers and households to ensure accuracy and efficiency in the data collection process.

Striving for an equitable and sustainable future

The PALM-TREEs Project, through its meticulous research and community-centered approach, is dedicated to investigating the multifaceted impact of climate change on women in Accra, Ghana. By highlighting the disproportionate effects of heat stress on women’s health, livelihoods, and overall well-being, the project aligns its goals with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 3, 5, and 13).

Ultimately, the project aspires to inform the development of effective climate-resilient solutions and amplify the voices of women, fostering a more equitable and sustainable future for all. In recognizing that climate change magnifies existing gender inequalities, particularly impacting women in roles such as water collection and smallholder farming, the project aims to address the core issues at hand. By empowering women to adapt to the changing climate, the PALM-TREEs Project contributes to a future where women can thrive despite the increasing environmental challenges.
