NPP must bring Bawumia to win power in 2028 – Polling station agent tells Wontumi

A video of a polling station organizer at Konongo Odumase in the Ashanti Region, urging the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to do everything possible for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the party in the 2028 polls, has gone viral.

In the video, the grassroots member of the NPP stopped the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, while he was driving, to deliver a message.

The organizer stressed the importance of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 elections, citing his potential to revive the party.

“I strongly believe Dr Bawumia’s leadership would be instrumental in driving the party’s success,” he told Chairman Wontumi.

He further added, “Bring Dr Bawumia and I can assure you he will lead the party to power in 2028. The majority of the grassroots are rooting for him and so it will be apt to bring him back.”

On his part, Chairman Wontumi drew parallels between the current situation and the party’s past experiences, noting that delegates’ loyalty remains strong for the former Vice President.

He said he believes the same delegates who voted in 2023 will vote again in 2026 and their support for Dr Bawumia will be crucial in determining the party’s success.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman expressed confidence that Dr Bawumia’s leadership can drive the NPP’s resurgence.

He appealed to party delegates to rally behind the former Vice President, insisting that circumstances this time are in his favor.

IMANI’s Cudjoe Alleges US$2bn Covid Fund Misuse by Former Government

0

Akufo Addo
Akufo Addo

Think tank leader Franklin Cudjoe has launched scathing accusations against the former Akufo-Addo administration, alleging widespread mismanagement of nearly $2 billion in Covid-19 relief funds meant to combat the pandemic and its economic fallout.

The founding president of IMANI Centre for Policy and Education, one of Africa’s most influential policy research organizations, didn’t mince words in his recent social media critique. “Nana and his gang received almost $2bn free money to fight off Covid-19 and its impact on our economy,” Cudjoe wrote, claiming the funds were “raided” and distributed primarily among party loyalists.

His allegations come as the World Bank’s 2025 Policy Notes definitively reject the narrative that external shocks caused Ghana’s 2022 economic crisis, stating that global conditions “merely exposed an economy already beset with deep structural vulnerabilities.”

The timing of Cudjoe’s statements appears strategic, coinciding with renewed scrutiny of the previous government’s pandemic response. According to the IMANI chief, a special audit revealed that only 40 percent of Covid-19 funds received proper application toward their intended purposes – a figure that, if accurate, would represent one of the most significant misallocation scandals in Ghana’s recent history.

“We lived it, saw it, complained and Nana Akufo-Addo ignored us,” Cudjoe stated, suggesting that concerns about fund management were raised during the administration but went unaddressed.

The World Bank’s assessment adds weight to criticism of the former government’s economic management. The international financial institution explicitly stated that “the deterioration of global conditions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine was not the cause of the 2022 macroeconomic crisis.”

This rejection of external blame contradicts years of government officials attributing Ghana’s economic difficulties to worldwide disruptions beyond their control. Instead, the Bank’s analysis points to pre-existing structural problems that external events simply revealed rather than created.

Franklin Cudjoe’s track record lends credibility to his current allegations. Throughout 2024, he consistently challenged various aspects of the previous administration’s policies, from calling for the scrapping of Covid-19 levies to questioning economic management strategies.

The Covid-19 fund controversy isn’t isolated. Ghana’s handling of pandemic resources has drawn scrutiny from multiple quarters, with questions about transparency and accountability in fund allocation persisting long after the health emergency subsided.

What makes Cudjoe’s latest intervention particularly significant is its timing. As Ghana works to rebuild economic confidence under new leadership, revelations about potential mismanagement of crisis funds could complicate efforts to restore international donor trust and investor confidence.

The allegations also raise broader questions about oversight mechanisms during emergency periods. When governments receive substantial international assistance for crisis response, the usual checks and balances often face pressure to expedite disbursement – potentially creating opportunities for misallocation.

For ordinary Ghanaians who endured economic hardship during and after the pandemic, these revelations may explain why promised relief didn’t materialize at the grassroots level. If significant portions of emergency funding were indeed diverted, it would represent a betrayal of public trust during a critical period.

The World Bank’s broader assessment suggests these issues weren’t merely administrative failures but symptoms of deeper economic governance problems. Their 2025 Policy Notes paint a picture of an economy where structural weaknesses made crisis inevitable, regardless of external circumstances.

Moving forward, these allegations will likely influence how international partners approach future assistance to Ghana. Donor confidence depends heavily on demonstrated ability to manage emergency funds effectively and transparently.

The controversy also highlights the important role think tanks like IMANI Africa play in holding governments accountable. Cudjoe’s willingness to speak bluntly about alleged mismanagement demonstrates how civil society organizations can provide critical oversight even when formal opposition may be limited.

As Ghana continues its economic recovery journey, understanding what went wrong with Covid-19 fund management becomes crucial for preventing similar issues in future crises. Whether these allegations lead to formal investigations remains to be seen, but they’ve certainly reignited debate about accountability in emergency governance.

Five things to know about Taye Currency

0

The name ‘Taye Currency’ has continued to trend on social media following the Fuji music artiste’s performance at the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, on Friday.

Taye Currency, during his performance at the coronation event which took place at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, rendered a line in Yoruba, “Were la fi n wo were,” which translates to “we cure madness with madness.”

The line, which seems not to have sat well with many Nigerians, particularly those of Yoruba heritage, has continued to generate a lot of criticism, with many opining that such lyrics were not befitting for the occasion, which had in attendance dignitaries including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, governors, ministers, traditional rulers, and other crème de la crème of society.

Reacting to the development, the Olu of Kemta Orile in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State, Oba Adetokunbo Tejuosho, criticised Taye Currency for what he described as “classless and unbefitting lyrics.”

According to him, the musician failed to accord the coronation its due respect, describing his lyrics as unbefitting of the sacred ceremony.

He said, “The throne of our ancestors is not a stage for mockery, nor the coronation of a great monarch a subject for careless entertainment.

“Kingship is sacred, adorned with honor and guarded by tradition. It demands reverence, dignity, honor, class and the utmost respect from all who stand in its presence.

“Listening to the musician (Taye Currency), who was invited to render music before the Crown, as a matter of fact before the entire world, to serenade the audience and sing in a way to express admiration, singing songs like (were lafi n wo were) We use madness to cure madness.

“Such lyrics were classless and unbefitting of such occasions, it is insulting to the sacredness of the gathering.”

While Taye Currency is well known among Fuji music lovers, especially those from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, his performance at the Olubadan coronation has made people want to know more about him.

In this article, Tribune Online takes a look at five things to know about the trending Fuji musician.

1. Full Name and Age

His full name is Taye Akande Adebisi. Apart from his popular stage name, Taye Currency, he is also known as ‘Apesin.’ He celebrated his 50th birthday on December 17, 2024.

    2. Appointment as Special Adviser on Culture and Tourism

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, appointed him as Special Adviser on Culture and Tourism in 2019 during the governor’s first tenure.

      3. Father of a Lawmaker

In 2019, Taye Currency’s son, Yusuf Oladeni Adebisi, was elected into the Oyo State House of Assembly to represent Ibadan South-West Constituency 1, which earned Taye Currency another nickname, ’Baba Honorable’ (Honourable’s father). He was re-elected in 2023 as a lawmaker on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

        4. Financial Setback

In April 2025, Taye Currency publicly lamented that he lost N10 million to CBEX, a crypto/investment scheme many now regard as a collapsed Ponzi platform. He explained that he was convinced to invest by close associates, only to see the scheme crumble shortly after.

          5. Affiliation with Pasuma

Taye Currency has often maintained that although he never learnt Fuji music from his senior colleague, Wasiu Alabi Odetona, popularly known as Pasuma, whom he first met in 1993, he still considers him a boss.

Africa must look inward to earn global respect – Dr. Liborous Oshoma

0

Legal Practitioner and Foreign Policy Analyst, Dr. Liborous Oshoma, has stressed that Africa can only command respect on the global stage if it builds strength from within rather than relying on external handouts.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Probe on Sunday, September 28, he noted that the continent must move beyond rhetoric and position itself as a serious player in global affairs.

“For Africa to truly show that we have arrived and deserve to be taken seriously, the first thing is to look inward and demonstrate our own strength. The world is moving towards a knowledge-based economy.

“What are we doing about our curriculum, about tapping into Africa’s inner strengths? If we wait for the world to give us handouts and then turn around to beg for a place at the table, nobody will take us seriously,” he cautioned.

Dr. Oshoma drew parallels with U.S. foreign policy, citing former President Donald Trump’s unapologetic approach to global politics as an example of how nations that have consistently positioned themselves strategically can dictate terms. According to him, Africa must do the same by strengthening regional integration and adopting a common policy framework under the African Union (AU). “At this stage, I think Africa has outgrown the phase of seeking applause for fine speeches. What we need is tangible results and a united front. With a common goal at the AU level, it will be almost impossible for the world to ignore Africa’s narrative,” he added

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Ing Kwabena Agyei Agyepong Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Ing Kwabena Agyei Agyepong

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and aspiring presidential candidate, Ing Kwabena Agyei Agyepong has revealed that he was ostracized by the party and sidelined for a decade, despite having committed no wrongdoing.

Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Frontline, he said he felt isolated during that period, especially after dedicating his youth, resources and energy to the party’s success.

He emphasised that despite being sidelined for years, he remained loyal and committed to the NPP.

Agyepong, who is seeking the party’s presidential nomination, stated that his distinguished service and deep understanding of the party’s grassroots make him the ideal candidate to lead the NPP to victory in 2028.

“As party members, you know my struggles, sacrifices, and selflessness for the NPP. I understand your struggles too. For ten years, I was ostracized. From 2015 to 2025, it has been ten years. I was ostracized and banished to the side,” he explained.

“I did not explain myself because God took good care of me. He took good care of me because I cried out to Him and prayed for Him to come through for me, especially when I had done no wrong.

“I told God to come through for me because I had dedicated my youth to the party. I had been with the party in the dark days when people were in fear and could not speak for the party.”

He also used the platform to urge the NPP to win back the confidence of Ghanaians, particularly aggrieved party members.

Additionally, he called on the party to respect the electorate, avoid taking them for granted, and engage them with messages that resonate, thereby securing victory in the 2028 general elections.

Agyepong appealed to delegates to vote massively for him, stressing that he is a unifier, not a divisive or vile candidate.

“As delegates, with the people to decide who is elected, I am appealing to them to vote for me because I am a unifier. I am not a candidate who is divisive and vile. They know those who are like that.

“Vote for me because I have demonstrated loyalty and served the party well. I was a General Secretary who did his best in securing 169 parliamentary seats for the NPP in the 2016 elections.”

Legacy Girls’ College celebrates 10 years of impact

0

Essie Anno Sackey, co-Founder of Legacy Girls’ College, speaking to the media during the walk, while Dr. Mrs. Ellen Hagan, Mrs. Millicent Clark and Ms. Grace Edziyie look on

Legacy Girls’ College (LGC), Ghana’s leading all-girls private boarding senior high school, is celebrating a decade of empowering young women through a values-driven and future-forward education.

Launched earlier this year under the theme, “A Decade of Intentional Leadership: Empowering the Next Generation of Women,” the 10th anniversary recognises the school’s bold vision to raise caring, confident, and competent female leaders who lead with purpose and make a positive impact in the world.

“The future of work is no longer ahead of us — it’s here,” said Dr. Mrs. Ellen Hagan, co-founder. “At Legacy, we equip our girls to thrive in a world increasingly shaped by robotics and artificial intelligence. But beyond technology, it’s the human traits — empathy, integrity, emotional intelligence, collaboration — that will keep them relevant and impactful.”

Founded in 2015 by Dr. Hagan and Essie Anno Sackey, Legacy Girls’ College began with just 23 students and has grown into a thriving, full-capacity institution serving nearly 700 students across Ghana and beyond. The school’s philosophy is anchored in five core values: Integrity, Responsibility, Excellence, Ambition, and Determination — captured in the acronym I READ.

“We instil not just academic excellence, but also a strong sense of responsibility to others,” noted Mrs. Anno Sackey. “We want our girls to care — not only about their success, but about the world they’re stepping into and how they can make it better.”

The anniversary float which took place on Saturday the 27th of September, is one of many activities to celebrate God’s goodness to the school in its 10 years of existence.

“This 10-year milestone is not just about the past,” said Board Chair Mr. Israel Titi Ofei. “It’s a recommitment to our mission — to nurture girls who will lead at every level of society, grounded in character and in competence.”

Dr. Ellen Hagan, Millicent Clark and Grace Edziyie led the walk in Accra

Instrumental to the school’s development is Mrs. Millicent Clarke, the third shareholder and director.  She commented as follows:

“Legacy continues to stand out because of its clarity of purpose and commitment to excellence,” she said. “We’re building an institution that lasts — and that starts with the girls we serve.”

Head of School Ms. Grace Edziyie emphasized that Legacy is more than academics:

“We challenge our girls to grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially. Our vision is to raise well-rounded young women who can lead with courage and character.”

I fought people in trotro for insulting Rawlings

0

Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund, Dr. Hanna Louisa Bisiw-Kotei, has recounted how she often clashed with passengers in Kumasi trotros for speaking against the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.

Sharing her experience on the Upside Down Show on Channel One TV on Sunday, September 28, 2025, Dr. Bisiw-Kotei said she would not sit quietly when people insulted Rawlings or the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Our family house is at Kumasi Tanoso, and in those days, you would take a trotro. I think I changed about three times before I got to Adum because I would fight in the car. They would be insulting President Rawlings, they would be insulting the NDC, and I would be fighting back,” she recalled.

She explained that her anger came from the fact that she could not comprehend why people would criticise Rawlings, whom she considered a transformational leader.

“I didn’t understand why such a great man would be castigated by the very people he came to help. He carried cocoa, he cleaned the gutters, he did so much for us,” she said.

The late President Jerry John Rawlings, who led Ghana first as a military ruler and later as a democratically elected leader, remains one of the country’s most charismatic figures. Admired by many for his bold reforms, including campaigns to clean up corruption, restore discipline, and revive grassroots development, he nonetheless faced fierce criticism from opponents who accused him of authoritarian excesses.

Rawlings is credited with stabilising Ghana’s economy during difficult periods, introducing key structural reforms, and championing the rights of ordinary citizens. His hands-on leadership style, symbolised by acts such as joining citizens in cleaning gutters and engaging farmers in cocoa-producing communities, earned him widespread admiration among the masses.

Ghana’s Black Princesses have advanced to the third round of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers after defeating Tunisia 4-0 on aggregate.

In the return leg, played on Saturday September 27, 2025, Mercy Attobrah opened the scoring in the 37th minute after Ghana had missed several early opportunities to take the lead.

Ivy Osei Owusu nearly doubled the advantage before halftime with a brilliant solo run, but her effort narrowly missed the target as the Princesses went into the break 1-0 up.

Head coach Charles Sampson’s tactical changes proved decisive in the second half.

Substitute Agnes Yeboah made an immediate impact, scoring with her first touch in the 46th minute to give Ghana a comfortable cushion.

Despite creating numerous chances afterwards, Ghana were denied further goals by a determined Tunisian defence.

However, the 2-0 win on the day, added to their first-leg victory, sealed a commanding 4-0 aggregate triumph for the Princesses.

The result sets up a third-round showdown against South Africa in February as Ghana continue their quest for a place at the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.

Chairman Wontumi hits back at Justin Kodua, urges fairness and truth

0

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has responded to recent remarks made by the Party’s General Secretary, Mr Justin Kodua Frimpong.

He accused him of misrepresentation and called for greater respect and accuracy in intra‑party dialogue.

The National Leadership of the NPP called on the public and stakeholders to disregard recent pronouncements by two of its Regional Chairmen.

In a statement signed by the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party said:

“The National Leadership of the New Patriotic Party urges the public and its stakeholders to disregard recent public pronouncements by the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, and the Bono Regional Chairman, Mr Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, as their statements do not represent the ideals and practices of the party.”

In response, Mr Antwi Boasiako contends that Mr Frimpong’s statement unfairly portrays him as antagonistic to the party, when in fact his comments were rooted in historical reflection and aimed at contributing ideas to help the NPP recapture power in 2028 under Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s leadership.

Mr Antwi Boasiako revisited key moments in the NPP’s history, notably the internal primaries of 1995‑1998 that paved the way for former President John A. Kufuor’s emergence as flagbearer.

He highlighted how Kufuor, after securing 39% in the 1996 primaries, was again selected by regional delegates in 1998 to lead the party.

He drew parallels between those years of strategic preparation and the current period, arguing that Bawumia requires about 9% (in relative terms) of advantage now to position the NPP for victory in the 2028 election.

“My position as Ashanti regional Chairman … places me closer to the people who tell me about the direction the party should be considering in recapturing power,” Mr Antwi Boasiako said.

He further maintained that his comments have always been truthful, transparent, and not motivated by a personal agenda.

Central to Mr Antwi Boasiako’s rebuttal is the assertion that he “never dragged in the name of our National Council”.

He insists that none of his public engagements involved misusing party institutions and that any suggestion otherwise is misleading.

He criticised Mr Kodua Frimpong for interpreting his words in a manner that misrepresents both his intentions and the facts.

“It is unfortunate Mr Justin Kodua Frimpong has fallen for propaganda seeking to misconstrue my statement,” he stated.

Mr Antwi Boasiako warned about the dangers of misinformation in the age of social media and artificial intelligence, suggesting that statements can be taken out of context or manipulated.

He urged Mr Kodua Frimpong, as General Secretary, to reach out and clarify before issuing public rebukes.

“In this era where saboteurs can easily use tools such as AI to destroy good people, Mr Kodua Frimpong could have simply reached out to me and gotten a full understanding … before issuing a statement that is far from the truth,” the statement concluded.

Tyla Declares “I’m Not Sorry” After Tiwa Savage’s Apology to Black Americans

0

South African Grammy-winning singer, Tyla, has broken her silence after Nigerian superstar Tiwa Savage apologized to African-Americans on her behalf over her use of the term “coloured.”

Tyla had earlier described herself as “coloured,” a label widely used in South Africa to describe people of mixed heritage. However, in the United States, the word carries a painful racial history and is seen as offensive.

Following the backlash from Black Americans, Tiwa Savage, during her appearance on The Breakfast Club show, apologized on behalf of Tyla, referring to herself as the younger singer’s “elder.”

Her remarks sparked criticism from South Africans, who felt Tiwa had no right to speak on behalf of Tyla or redefine their racial identity.

Over the weekend, Tyla appeared to distance herself from Tiwa’s apology. While performing at the Global Citizen Festival in New York, she boldly told the crowd:

“Sorry, I am not sorry,” before performing her track Mr Media.

The moment was widely shared across social media, with many South Africans praising Tyla for standing her ground and refusing to let others define her racial identity.

Meanwhile, reactions online remain divided as debates about race, identity, and cultural context continue to trend.

Assemblywoman lauds Berekum East pay-to-dump’ waste disposal programme

By Benjamin Asomah, GNA

Berekum (Bono), Sept. 28, GNA – Madam Veronica Benewaa, the Assembly Member for the Nyamebekyere Electoral Area in the Berekum East Municipality, has lauded the assembly’s ‘pay-to-dump’ waste disposal programme implementation in the area.

She explained that under the programme, the Assembly had put waste containers at strategic places that enabled residents to dump their household waste and paid some fees.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Berekum, Madam Benewaa said the programme implementation had improved environmental cleanliness as well as sanitation and waste management in the Municipality, saying the Assembly’s Internally Generated Funds (IGF) had also improved accordingly.

She said: “Previously the residents just dispose of their household waste anywhere, contributing to poor sanitation and hygiene,” and commended Hajia Fatimatu Abubakar, the Berekum East Municipal Chief Executive for her innovations.

She said with the programme execution, the Assembly had now taken charge of waste collection and disposal and advised the residents to change their attitudes towards waste disposal by dumping their refuse in the containers provided.

I’m grateful to Nana Konadu for influencing me to stay in Ghana

0

Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund, Dr. Hanna Louisa Bisiw-Kotei, has revealed that her decision to remain in Ghana after returning from her studies in Cuba was strongly influenced by former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings.

Speaking on the Upside Down Show on Channel One TV on Sunday, September 28, 2025, Dr. Bisiw-Kotei recounted that she arrived in Ghana in 2001 after graduating in 1999. At the time, she was deeply unsettled by what she described as a hostile political environment, and seriously considered leaving the country again.

She explained that her frustrations stemmed from the constant criticisms directed at the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, whom she admired for transforming the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.

“I graduated in 1999, I came home in 2001. I think I didn’t want to come home but I came home and I want to say this here to mummy, Mrs. Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, I am grateful. I remember when I came home I really wanted to go back… at that time I was considering leaving the country because I loved President Rawlings so much and I knew, as I know right now, where we were as a country before he came in. I experienced it, I felt it, I saw the hunger, drought. I saw how soldiers would come to our end and my mum would get fufu for them to take to the Castle. I was a little child,” she narrated.

Dr. Bisiw-Kotei recalled how a family visit to the Rawlingses eventually changed her perspective.

“My mummy and I visited and she [Mrs. Rawlings] prepared fufu and after we finished eating… we had to go and say hello to her to know I was back. As mommy [Nana Konadu] said, it actually went strong in me because you see, they had come out of office and they were being castigated. But this is the same woman who was telling me that if I left the country I was going to pay for the food. And when we left, my mother would not let me be, so that kept me,” she said.

Dr. Bisiw-Kotei added that her encounters with Nana Konadu strengthened her resolve to stay in Ghana and contribute, despite her initial frustrations.

Freedom of speech or abuse of speech? The growing trend of cyber bullying in Ghana -Sophia Arthur writes

0

Ghana has long been hailed as one of Africa’s most stable democracies, a nation where freedom of speech is not only guaranteed under Article 21 of the 1992 constitution but celebrated as a pivot of good governance.

However, in recent years, the very right that empowers citizens to speak their minds has been stretched to dangerous limits, especially on social media.

What started as harmless commentary has now escalated into a culture of insults, threats, and the spread of misinformation. Shockingly, even children and people expected to do better have all joined the bandwagon, boldly insulting elderly people on Facebook, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter). This worrying trend is fast eroding the respect, dignity, and responsibility that the Ghanaian society has always cherished.

A Culture of Insults Gone Wild
With internet penetration in Ghana reaching 24.3 million users by the start of 2025, social media has become the main platform for news, entertainment, and public discourse. But alongside the positives, the negatives are glaring. People now hide behind screens to launch personal attacks, threaten others, defame, malign, slander and circulate fake stories.

What was once seen as “just social media banter” is now creating real damage, broken reputations, rising tension, and even fear in some communities.

Why It Matters
Democratic Freedom Misused: Freedom of speech was never meant to be freedom to abuse. It is meant to give citizens this important tool to hold people in power accountable and contribute meaningfully to the growth pattern of the country. Channelling this freedom into insult will equally result in a weakened democracy which lacks the strong voice of citizens demanding accountability and making the much-needed inputs.

Impact on Children: Young people, instead of using the media for education and creativity, are learning disrespect and hostility. They are consuming toxic and unwholesome contents which carry words, terms and expressions that they must not get in contact with.

National Image: Ghana’s respected democratic reputation could be tarnished if these online behaviours are left unchecked. The insults moving from peers to leaders could easily cross borders and global levels. This will lead to the attraction of global shame and a downgrade in the respect for the country.

The Call for Action
Many Ghanaians believe it is time for the government, communication regulators such as the National Communications Authority (NCA), and other institutions like the National Media Commission (NMC) to step in with laws and policies needed to tame this menace. Clear policies, digital literacy programs, and stricter monitoring of online platforms could help reduce the level of disrespect, threats, and misinformation.

Social media companies also have a role to play by introducing stricter verification systems, stronger reporting tools, and promoting positive content.

Conclusion
Ghana must not allow its enviable democratic freedom to be drowned in a sea of online disrespect and misinformation. Freedom of speech is a right, but with it comes responsibility. It is time for parents, schools, government, regulators, and the platforms themselves to rise up and restore order in our digital space.

The media is powerful; it can build or destroy. Ghana must choose wisely.

I never criticised NPP council, my focus was on Bawumia

0

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, has dismissed claims that he criticised the party’s National Council, insisting his comments were taken out of context.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Mr Antwi-Boasiako said recent remarks made during his engagement with party members had been misconstrued by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong.

Chic Low Haircut for Black Women

0

In recent years, the chic low haircut has emerged as a powerful style statement for Black women, celebrating natural beauty, confidence, and individuality. This minimalist yet bold look offers a refreshing alternative to high-maintenance hairstyles, allowing women to fully embrace their features and texture with elegance and flair.

The term “low haircut” generally refers to hairstyles that are closely cropped to the scalp, such as fades, buzz cuts, or tapered cuts. For Black women, these styles beautifully highlight facial structure, jawlines, and bone structure, creating a sleek and polished appearance. From the clean classic Caesar cut to the artistic designs found in tapered fades, the low haircut offers versatility while remaining effortlessly stylish.

One of the key appeals of a low haircut is the low maintenance. Without the need for extensive detangling or protective styling, it saves time and effort while keeping hair healthy and free from damage. Additionally, low cuts are the perfect canvas for creative self-expression—women can experiment with bold colors like platinum blonde, copper, or even vivid purples and blues to make the look truly unique.

Culturally, the chic low haircut also represents a shift toward self-acceptance and empowerment. It’s not just a style—it’s a statement. For many Black women, cutting their hair low is a liberating experience that challenges traditional beauty standards and embraces the natural beauty of tightly coiled textures.

Whether worn natural, colored, or patterned, the chic low haircut is a timeless expression of bold femininity, independence, and style.

I never involved NPP National Council in my comments

0

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, has rejected suggestions that he maligned the party’s National Council in his recent engagements with the grassroots.

This comes after NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong issued a statement urging party stakeholders to disregard pronouncements made by Wontumi and Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe (Abronye DC), stressing that no individual has unilateral control over the party’s processes, including the compilation of polling station albums or the timing of the presidential primaries.

But in a statement issued on Sunday, September 28, 2025, Wontumi said the General Secretary’s comments painted him unfairly as an antagonist of the party.

“Throughout my engagement with people, I have never dragged in the name of our National Council and that is easily verifiable from videos shared online. For the avoidance of doubt, I touched on the history of our party and how it can position us to win back power in 2028 with Dr. Bawumia,” he explained.

Wontumi cited historical precedents, recalling how former President John Agyekum Kufuor overcame setbacks after the 1996 primaries to eventually win power in 2000. He argued that, like Kufuor, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia needed only a modest margin to secure victory in 2028.

“To link this to our current situation, Dr. Bawumia is looking for 9% to win the NPP the 2028 election,” he stated.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman stressed that his position places him closer to the grassroots and that his comments merely reflected feedback from party supporters on how the NPP could strategise for a comeback.

“The National Council of the NPP never featured in any of the statements I made to the people,” he insisted, adding that it was “unfortunate” that the General Secretary had, in his view, fallen for propaganda designed to twist his remarks.

Wontumi further urged party leadership to properly verify his statements before issuing official responses, warning that in an era where “saboteurs can easily use tools such as AI to destroy good people,” misrepresentation could harm unity in the party.

Hulk Rumor Finally Gives Marvel Fans What We’ve Wanted Since The MCU’s Phase 1 (With A Dark Twist)

0

Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus is back for another Q&A, and in his typically brief way, he’s talking this time about what we could possibly expect from a long-time fan favorite Avenger (hint: it’s something we’ve all been thinking about since Phase 1).

So what is it that we might be getting? A legitimately dangerous Hulk again! And he might actually kill somebody this time. While that’s a shame, audiences being able to watch a real Hulk on the big screen again has been a long time coming.

As the Q&A kicked off, user BraveFire asked Perez, “Can you tease us with anything new about Savage Hulk/Bruce Banner in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Doomsday?” Perez responded with, “Hulk is scarier than ever before. He might even kill someone.” Well, we do love hearing about a potentially terrifying Hulk!

Hulk’s Newest Role in the Marvel Universe Will Surprise You

What Does This Mean For The Future Of The Hulk?

When asked, Perez said that things were “still in development” when it came to anything for the Hulk post Secret Wars, and when prompted about potential stand-alone films for the Hulk and Black Panther villain Namor (Tenoch Huerta), he simply said, “not yet.”

Recently, the mini-series Marvel Zombies did give Hulk a massive power boost in their take on how the world is saved from a zombie Thanos—thanks to T’Challa sacrificing himself, only to unwittingly endanger the world again by destroying the Infinity Stones in the process and unleashing all their power once more. In this version of the story, Bruce Banner harnesses the power of the Infinity Stones, thereby using the Hulk as a battery or conduit for this insane level of power. The finale of the mini-series shows us that the Hulk now anchors the same power that threatens the world, requiring an incredible amount of strength to do so.

Will we ever see the Hulk with this level of power in live action? Probably not, considering everything that the MCU would have to change and retcon to get us to a point even similar to the one we see in Marvel Zombies. Though if they wanted to introduce a version of The Scarlett Witch that was turning everyone into zombies, we wouldn’t complain. But after years of Hulk being used as comic relief, it is cool to imagine the sort of power that we could see from him—especially from a version of the Hulk that is willing to embody the inherent violence, power, and dangerous nature within him.

EOCO’s ‘deception’ in Adu-Boahene’s trial cancerous to nation-building

0

A barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Ghana, Lawyer Lawrence Kwesi Botchway Jnr, has described as a complete fabrication the Cybersecurity charges leveled by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) against former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu-Boahene.

In a statement released under the headline “President Mahama Exposes EOCO’s Deception,” on September 28, 2025, the legal practitioner argued that EOCO’s posture in the matter exposes a troubling disregard for fairness and justice.

The lawyer narrated the events surrounding his client’s ordeal, beginning with what he described as a “shabby treatment” meted to them on April 30, 2025.

He said Adu-Boahene, his wife Angela Adjei Boateng and an associate, Mildred Donkor, together with their lawyers, were subjected to unusual treatment at the hands of armed officers.

“On the 30th day of April 2025, at 4:30pm, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, Mildred Donkor and their lawyers in ordinary clothes, were ordered by armed men into a car to leave the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to an unknown place,” the statement recounted.

According to Botchway, a scuffle broke out when the lawyers sought an explanation for the detention but they were eventually taken to the High Court “at that late hour when the Attorney-General and his Deputy were comfortably seated.”

He further alleged that the Attorney-General had already filed 11 counts of criminal offences by 12:32 p.m. that day, catching the defence team off guard.

ORAL: AG’s Office reveals documents it intends to ‘nail’ Adu-Boahene, others with

The charges against Adu-Boahene included stealing, defrauding by false pretences, wilfully causing financial loss to the state, using public office for profit and obtaining public property by false statements.

Citing from the charge sheet, Botchway highlighted the central accusation, “That you on or about February 5, 2020, in Accra and within the jurisdiction of this Court, did under the guise of procuring a cyber defence system for the Republic of Ghana from ISC Holdings Limited, dishonestly appropriate the sum of about Twenty-seven Million and One Hundred Thousand Ghana cedis (GH¢ 27,100,000.00) belonging to the Republic of Ghana with the intention of depriving the Government of Ghana of the said amount.”

The lawyer, however, rejected the narrative advanced by EOCO and the Attorney-General’s department, pointing out that the charges repeatedly hinged on the claim that no cybersecurity defence system was ever delivered.

“The Attorney-General’s Hallelujah chorus is that the alleged crimes were under the guise of procuring a cyber defence system for the Republic of Ghana from ISC Holdings Limited,” he wrote.

Botchway accused EOCO, led by Raymond Archer, of deceiving the Attorney-General with false reports.

He stressed that EOCO claimed to have investigated and discovered that “no cybersecurity system of the description in the January 30, 2020 contract was ever received” by the Bureau of National Communications or its successor agency, the National Signals Bureau.

He quoted directly from the prosecution’s fact sheet, “Further investigations have revealed that no cybersecurity system of the description in the January 30, 2020, contract was ever received by the Bureau of National Communications or by its successor agency the National Signals Bureau or by the Government of Ghana.

“An inventory confirmation from the National Security Secretariat shows that the equipment was never received into stores as is the practice in the public services.”

Botchway asserted that the system was indeed delivered and is currently in use by the state.

He noted that President John Dramani Mahama, during his September 10, 2025 Presidential Media Encounter at the Jubilee House, inadvertently confirmed its existence.

Adu Boahene’s driver disputes AG’s account in Gh¢49m fraud case

“The Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, President John Dramani Mahama, blew the cover of Raymond Archer to the effect that those who foul the media space with inflammatory language can be tracked through their IP Address and prosecuted. That is a direct reference to the functionality of the cybersecurity defence system,” Botchway argued.

He further disclosed that ISC Holdings Limited, the company contracted to supply the system, had confirmed in writing that the equipment was delivered, a claim he said completely undermines EOCO’s position.

Describing the charges as a clear case of “official deception,” the lawyer warned that such conduct was “cancerous to nation-building.”

He went as far as invoking scripture, stating, “EOCO is violating the Ninth Commandment, You shall not lay a false charge against your neighbour (Exodus 20:16).”

Botchway also criticised the silence of the current National Security leadership, which he said continues to benefit from the system Adu-Boahene procured but has failed to defend the truth.

“Fellow Ghanaians, the irony is that the succeeding National Security is silent and giving oxygen to EOCO’s official deception,” he stated.

He ended his statement with gratitude to the President for shedding light on the matter, declaring, “Thank you, President. The sun does not set in EOCO.”

Wontumi sets record straight on NPP national council claims

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has set the record straight by dismissing claims that he involved the party’s National Council in his recent engagements with the grassroots.

In a statement issued on Sunday September 28, 2025, Antwi-Boasiako addressed comments made by the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, stressing that at no point did he invoke the name of the National Council while speaking to party supporters.

“My attention has been drawn to a statement issued by the General Secretary. As a senior member of the party, I would like to set the record straight before his statement wrongly paints me as an antagonist of our beloved party,” part of the statement said.

According to the Ashanti Regional Chairman, his recent remarks centered on the history of the NPP and the lessons that could guide the party’s bid to reclaim power in 2028 with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its presidential candidate.

He drew parallels with the party’s experiences in the 1990s, noting that former President John Agyekum Kufuor had a second chance after his first bid in 1996, which helped him secure victory in 2000.

Antwi-Boasiako argued that just as Kufuor needed “11% plus one” to cross the line in 2000, Bawumia now requires “only 9%” to secure power for the NPP in 2028.

NPP distances itself from statements by Wontumi, Abronye

“My position as Ashanti Regional Chairman places me closer to the people and they consistently tell me about the direction the party should take in recapturing power. The National Council never featured in any of the statements I made,” he stressed.

Antwi-Boasiako also expressed disappointment with the General Secretary for what he described as a rush to judgment influenced by propaganda.

“In this era, where saboteurs can easily use tools such as AI to destroy good people, Kodua Frimpong could have simply reached out to me and gotten a full understanding of my statements before issuing a statement that is far from the truth,” he added.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman called for unity within the party as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.

Ghana’s newly appointed Ambassador to Brazil, Nii Amassa Namoale, has charged staff and career diplomats at the Ghanaian Embassy in Brasília to actively promote President John Dramani Mahama’s ’reset agenda’ in order to attract investors to Ghana.

Addressing embassy staff during his first day in office last week, Ambassador Namoale stressed the need for Ghana’s diplomatic mission to market the President’s vision on the global stage.

Peter Obi Gave Me A Ghana Must Go,I Fell On The Ground And Laughed When I Saw The Content-Charly Boy

0

Popular Nigerian singer, songwriter, television presenter, actor and producer, Charles Chukwuemeka best known as Charly Boy, has disclosed what his reaction was, after Peter Obi surprised him with a “Ghana must go”, early in the morning.

In his post, Charly Boy narrated how Peter Obi had called him around 1am and told him about his plans to visit him by 5am or 6am that morning, while demanding to know if the time will favour him.

According to Charly Boy, he had queried better Obi because his visit meant no early morning exercise and scooter ride, but he still agreed without thinking over it, because he would do anything for Peter Obi.

Speaking further, he said Peter Obi arrived at exactly 5:45am and they talked about Nigerian politics, family matters and others.

He disclosed that while he was coming downstairs, he saw a big Ghana must go by the entrance of his sitting room and kept wondering what the content was. And that after 2 hours of discussion, Peter Obi told him that he had brought something small for him and without opening the bag, he thanked Peter Obi.

According to Charly Boy, after Peter Obi had left the house, he opened the bag to see the content of the bag, inside it were 3 bottles of roasted groundnuts, many alligator pepper, kola nuts, pawpaw, oranges, agara, mangoes, bananas and many others, packed by Peter Obi himself.

Charly Boy revealed that he didn’t know when he fell on the ground and started laughing. He called Obi to thank him and Peter Obi’s response was that he can’t give him money, but can give him those things in the bag because he picked it by himself.

Federation of African University Sports hails UDS on historic football championship victory

0

The Federation of African University Sports (FASU) has extended its warmest congratulations to the University for Development Studies (UDS) following their 2-1 victory over Brazil’s Paulista University at the 2025 FISU World University Football Cup — a first in the competition’s history for any African university.

Ezedeen Alhassan scored in extra time to complete a comback for UDS.

The Ghanaian side had to dig deep after Gabriel Viera stunned them with a goal in the opening 30 seconds of the match.

But UDS refused to bow out, with captain Asigre Sulemana striking late in injury time to level the score.

In a statement released on September 28, FASU praised UDS and the wider Ghanaian university sports community, hailing the triumph as a moment of immense pride for the entire continent.

“On behalf of the entire African university sports family, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to you, the University for Development Studies, and the wider Ghanaian university sports community on your historic victory,” the statement read. “This achievement is a source of immense pride not only for UDS and Ghana, but for Africa as a whole.”

The victory, which saw UDS crowned champions after an intense final match, has been widely lauded as a transformative moment for African university sport.

FASU highlighted that the team’s performance not only demonstrated athletic excellence but also reflected the strength of leadership at UDS, the unwavering dedication of coaches and players, and the solid backing of the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA).

More significantly, the win has earned African universities additional slots in the 2026 edition of the tournament — a development FASU called a “true milestone.”

“Beyond winning the trophy, your success has secured additional slots for African teams in next year’s edition, opening greater opportunities for our continent to shine even brighter on the global stage,” the statement added.

FASU also paid tribute to key individuals behind the victory, including UDS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Seidu, and Head Coach Tanko Ibrahim.

Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel Accra Launches Green Stay Initiative, Paving the Way for Sustainable Hospitality in Ghana

0

Published on
September 28, 2025

The Green Stay Initiative was started by the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel Accra in an effort to improve sustainability in the hospitality sector. This action has raised the bar for environmentally friendly behavior in Ghana and throughout West Africa. Unveiled on the hotel’s grounds, the Green Stay Initiative emphasizes the growing significance of sustainability in the travel industry and how important such actions are in the battle against climate change.

Key stakeholders from a range of industries, including government representatives, corporate executives, and sustainability specialists, came together at the event. It was evident that they were all committed to a sustainable future for the area’s tourism industry. The program is regarded as a trailblazing step toward a more environmentally conscious hospitality industry that adopts green practices while providing guests with opulent experiences and first-rate service.

Commitment to Sustainability: A Shift in Mindset

The Green Stay Initiative was introduced to foster an eco-conscious hospitality model in Ghana. The General Manager of Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel Accra, Isaac Okpoti Adjei, emphasized that sustainability is not merely a trend or a buzzword. Instead, it has become an operational necessity and a moral obligation within the industry. The focus, according to the General Manager, is on redefining the guest experience by merging “conscious luxury” with environmental responsibility.

The hotel has already begun embedding sustainability in its day-to-day operations. This includes the implementation of energy-efficient lighting, the use of smart water systems, and a reduction in food waste. Additionally, local sourcing of ingredients is a key element in Mövenpick Accra’s efforts to minimize its carbon footprint and support local businesses. While these practices represent a solid foundation for the Green Stay Initiative, the hotel management is clear that the full potential of sustainability will only be realized if the entire hospitality ecosystem adopts similar measures.

A Holistic Approach: Beyond the Hotel Walls

The Green Stay Initiative aims to revolutionize the hospitality sector by demonstrating how sustainability should permeate every part of hotel operations and even extend beyond hotel walls. Isaac Okpoti Adjei emphasized that hotels cannot tackle sustainability in isolation. He called for cooperation with suppliers, partners, and local communities to create a more sustainable hospitality industry.

The hotel’s sustainability efforts include aligning with international standards for sustainable sourcing and supporting circular economies. The aim is to shift away from the use of single-use plastic products and encourage the industry to adopt more sustainable practices. In fact, Mövenpick’s parent company, Accor Group, has already eliminated over 50 single-use plastic products in 88% of its properties globally, marking a significant step towards reducing waste in the hospitality sector.

By incorporating sustainable practices into every aspect of their operation, Mövenpick Accra is leading the way in a growing trend of hotels and hospitality businesses incorporating green practices into their business models. The initiative is not just about reducing the hotel’s environmental impact but also about influencing the broader hospitality industry to take similar action.

Government Support for Sustainable Tourism

Mövenpick’s Green Stay Initiative aligns with Ghana’s national development goals, and the event was graced by prominent figures from the Ghanaian government. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, the Minister for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, highlighted the importance of private sector leadership in fostering sustainability within the tourism industry. He commended Mövenpick for setting an example of responsible business practices that support the government’s long-term sustainability agenda.

The government of Ghana has already made strides in promoting green initiatives. Measures such as tax incentives for businesses that adopt green technologies, as well as technical support for eco-friendly projects in the hospitality sector, are already in place. Furthermore, the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre is offering facilitation for sustainable tourism projects to attract both local and foreign investments in eco-tourism.

These measures are part of a broader effort under the government’s RESET agenda, which focuses on creating a regulatory environment that supports green growth. Among the initiatives outlined are plans to integrate green building standards into all new public infrastructure, promote renewable energy solutions, and deepen alignment with climate adaptation strategies. The government’s commitment to sustainability aligns with Mövenpick’s Green Stay Initiative, creating a platform for collaboration that will help both the private and public sectors meet their shared goals.

The Role of Tourism in Ghana’s Economic Future

Tourism is one of Ghana’s most significant economic sectors, contributing $4.8 billion to the country’s GDP in 2024. As a sector, it is vital that tourism’s growth is not achieved at the expense of the environment. Minister Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, representing the Tourism Minister at the event, emphasized that tourism cannot flourish without clean air, safe water, thriving ecosystems, and well-preserved natural and cultural heritage.

She pointed out that climate change and biodiversity challenges were already having a tangible impact on the country’s tourism sector, citing coastal erosion in Cape Coast and threats to forest reserves like Kakum and Mole. The Green Stay Initiative addresses these concerns by encouraging sustainable tourism practices that safeguard Ghana’s natural beauty and heritage for future generations.

The initiative not only calls for the reduction of the tourism industry’s environmental footprint but also highlights the importance of education and collaboration across all sectors. Mövenpick has committed to holding quarterly workshops and collaborating with policymakers, academic institutions, and other industry partners to build capacity within the hospitality and tourism sectors.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Sustainable Hospitality in Ghana

As the Green Stay Initiative moves into its next phase, Mövenpick is focused on creating long-term, meaningful impacts in Ghana’s hospitality and tourism industries. With sustainability as a core value, the hotel aims to create lasting change by influencing guest behaviour and industry practices. This will not be achieved through one-off actions but rather through an ongoing commitment to sustainable operations, collaborative efforts with various stakeholders, and continuous education and engagement.

Every small sustainable decision—from reusing towels to sourcing local food—can create lasting positive impacts. The Green Stay Initiative exemplifies how sustainability, when integrated into a hotel’s operational DNA, can drive industry-wide change while providing guests with memorable, responsible luxury experiences.

Conclusion

A major shift in the way sustainable tourism is viewed in West Africa has been brought about by the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel Accra’s Green Stay Initiative. The hotel sets a great example for other hospitality companies to follow with its emphasis on environmentally friendly procedures, operational sustainability, and local collaborations. Ghana’s sustainable hospitality industry appears to have a bright future thanks to government policies, cross-sector collaboration, and a dedication to educating both industry participants and visitors.

Reducing a single hotel’s environmental impact is only one aspect of the Green Stay Initiative. It’s a rallying cry for the hospitality industry as a whole to reevaluate its environmental impact and cooperate for a more sustainable, greener future.

Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco have tied the knot.

The famed couple, who have reportedly been seeing each other since 2023 – shared vows at a private event over the weekend, according to a post shared by Gomez on social media.

Grammy and Emmy-nominated singer-actor Gomez and Blanco, a decorated record producer with clients including his new bride, went public with their relationship last year.

In December, Gomez announced they were engaged via Instagram, writing: “forever begins now.”

The pair first met in 2015, when Blanco co-produced Gomez’s single “Same Old Love,” and they have since collaborated on her 2019 hit “I Can’t Get Enough” and “Single Soon” in 2023.

Earlier this year, they released their first joint album, “I Said I Love You First.”

In a March appearance on Jay Shetty’s podcast, Gomez explained how she went from being protective of her heart to completely falling for Blanco.

“When Benny looks at me I don’t think he sees anything but who I am and that’s very rare to find,” she said of Blanco, who she called her “best friend.”

As for Blanco, his TikTok has often featured him cooking for Gomez (he makes her cheesesteak hot pockets from scratch), and he never misses an opportunity to praise her.

“It’s so cool to watch you be completely on your on path and not worried about what else is happening,” he told Gomez in a video shared on Facebook by Billboard.

“I feel like just your energy, your thought process and the way you’ve moved through the world as a woman I feel like has given other women so much…has given so much confidence.”

A longtime friend of Gomez’s, Taylor Swift commented on her engagement announcement on social media in December, writing at the time, “yes I will be the flower girl.”

Gomez was equally supportive when Swift got engaged this year, resharing the superstar’s engagement photos on Instagram and writing, “When bestie gets engaged.”

The Management Development and Productivity Institute (MDPI) has certified 106 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) across Ghana after their successful completion of the International Labour Organisation (ILO)’s Sustaining Competitive and Responsible Enterprises (SCORE) programme, with support from the German Development Cooperation.

Speaking at the certification ceremony on September 26, 2025, the Director General of MDPI, Prof Elijah Yendaw, described the impact of the initiative as “monumental,” noting that it has transformed workplace practices and improved compliance among participating businesses.

“Since the launch of Phase Four of the SCORE programme, 106 SMEs and over 400 individuals have benefited from training in workplace improvement methodologies,” he told journalists.

Prof Yendaw explained that the programme has helped businesses enhance communication between employees and managers, adopt cleaner and more organised workspaces, and implement fair wage practices.

“Many SMEs that previously did not comply with minimum wage protocols are now adhering to them. Some have even registered their staff with pension schemes and health insurance to ensure long-term security and access to healthcare,” Prof Yendaw said.

He added that MDPI has established a dedicated office for the SCORE programme and intends to sustain it with alternative funding sources, even if current donor support winds down.

Looking ahead, Prof Yendaw said SCORE aligns directly with the government’s flagship 24-Hour Economy initiative, which seeks to create jobs and drive growth through round-the-clock business activity.

“The basic tenets of SCORE—competitiveness, responsibility, and sustainability- fit perfectly into the 24-Hour Economy policy. We are committed to working with government and other partners to scale this programme nationwide,” he stated.

Prof Yendaw expressed optimism that future phases will include all regions, including his home region of Upper West.

The SCORE programme is a global ILO initiative aimed at improving productivity and working conditions in SMEs through practical training and capacity building.

Congratulations are in order for Rihanna and A$AP Rocky! The couple have become parents for a third time, welcoming their first baby girl earlier this month. The singer took to her social media page to share news of their daughter’s arrival, revealing she was born on September 13, and named Rocki Irish Mayers, a name that seemingly pays tribute to her father’s stage name. She joins the couple’s two sons, RZA and Riot Rose Mayers.

“Rocki Irish Mayers, Sept 13 2025,” Rihanna simply captioned a pair of photos of herself cradling her newborn in pink blankets, plus another of the baby’s adorable pink shoes with ballet straps. The post was quickly inundated with congratulatory comments, and racked up nearly 120,000 likes on Instagram within its first 10 minutes going live (as of writing).

When asked if it is “the girl you’ve been waiting for?” he responded: “It is, man, it is,” before holding up a Smurfette toy and going: “Right here, right here.” He later told the publication: “Let’s see if it’s a Smurfette! I don’t know! Could be a Papa Smurf! Who knows!”

“What’s really fly is raising a family, bro, and loving them. Being there,” A$AP recently told Elle, and once again teased the baby’s sex. “I hope it’s a girl. I really do. We’re praying for a girl. Our first time, we wanted to know the sex of the baby. The second time, we didn’t want to know. Third time, we don’t want to know until, you know.”

AFRICA/GHANA – Proliferation of illegally held firearms raises concern

smallarmscommission.gov.gh

Accra (Agenzia Fides) – Ghana has seen a sharp increase in incidents involving illegally held firearms this year. According to the Firearms Incident Report prepared by the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA), a body established by Parliament in 2007 to advise on the illegal arms trade, there were 54 cases of illegal use of firearms in the second quarter of this year, compared to 15 in the same period in 2024.

Three regions saw the highest number of incidents between April and June. The Ashanti Region recorded the highest number with 21 incidents, followed by the Eastern Region with eight cases and the Upper East Region with seven cases.

The NACSA report shows that armed violence is widespread in 11 of Ghana’s 16 regions, making it a national problem.

Men represent 100% of the perpetrators and 78% of the victims of armed violence. Of the 43 deaths recorded this quarter, 39 victims were men.

In addition to common firearms such as pistols and shotguns, three AK-47 assault rifles, the famous Kalashnikovs, were recovered at the scene. They had been smuggled into West Africa by criminal networks.

The increase in armed violence is part of a context of growing insecurity in Ghana and the entire West African region, where the proliferation of weapons is linked to political instability, transnational criminal networks, and the economic difficulties of the population in this region.

According to NACSA, of the 2.3 million weapons in Ghana, 1.1 million are illegally held. The main source of illegal weapons is neighboring Burkina Faso, a hotbed of terrorist activity. The flow of weapons from this country has contributed to an increase in ethnic violence in Bawku, in northern Ghana (see Fides, 13/4/2022) and caused numerous civilian casualties.

As for the future, there are fears that the difficult economic situation and high youth unemployment in Ghana could lead to increasing numbers of young people turning to criminal activity to survive. With the increasing availability of weapons, the risk of an increase in violent crimes such as armed robberies and assaults across the country increases. General insecurity and a lack of trust in law enforcement could prompt ordinary citizens to arm themselves. Party members frequently arm themselves, and violent clashes between different political factions have already occurred. (L.M) (Agenzia Fides, 28/9/2025)

Mövenpick launches Green Stay Initiative, emphasising sustainable hospitality in Ghana

0

The Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel Accra has launched its Green Stay Initiative, setting a new benchmark for sustainable hospitality in Ghana and the wider West African region.

The event, held at the hotel’s premises, brought together leading voices from government, business, and the sustainability community, all united in a shared vision for an eco-conscious future in tourism and hospitality.

General Manager of Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel Accra, Isaac Okpoti Adjei, Esq., urged the industry to embrace sustainability not as a buzzword, but as an operational imperative and moral responsibility.

Mr Adjei outlined a bold vision to redefine the guest experience through “conscious luxury” where comfort meets conscience and every stay contributes positively to people and planet.

“Our guests no longer ask only for leisure and luxury,” he explained. “They ask for experiences that are meaningful and sustainable.”

He noted that across the Accor Group, which operates over 5,700 hotels in more than 110 countries, sustainability is now woven into core business operations.

A striking 88% of properties have already eliminated over 50 single-use plastic products, reflecting a global shift away from wasteful practices.

He noted that The Green Stay Initiative is more than a hotel programme, it is a call to transform the entire hospitality ecosystem.

At Mövenpick Accra, sustainability is already embedded in energy-efficient lighting, smart water systems, food waste reduction, and local sourcing. But Mr Adjei was unequivocal: hotels cannot go it alone.

“Sustainability must not be limited to hotel walls,” he said. “It must shape how we design, build, procure, train, and engage — across our entire value chain.”

He explained how Mövenpick is aligning its supply partners with international sustainability standards and rethinking procurement to support circular economies and carbon-conscious practices.

With over 200 million meals served annually by Accor worldwide, Mr Adjei noted the power and responsibility held by the sector to influence food systems and guest choices.

Mr Adjei emphasised the urgent need for local action in the face of climate change and urbanisation.

“We at Mövenpick consider ourselves custodians of Ghana’s natural beauty and heritage. To protect this legacy, eco-friendly practices must shape not only hospitality but how we build in this country.”

He praised government efforts to create a regulatory and investment climate that supports green growth, but stressed that collaboration across sectors is essential.

“Sustainability is not achieved by hotels alone. It requires cooperation with government, business partners, suppliers, guests, and communities.”

Speaking as Guest of Honour, Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, lauded Mövenpick’s initiative as a model of private sector leadership aligned with Ghana’s national development goals.

“This is not only about environmental compliance,” he said. “It is about innovation, competitiveness, and long-term value creation in an increasingly sustainability-conscious global tourism market.”

The Minister detailed a number of government measures under the RESET agenda, including:

  • Tax incentives and duty waivers for green technologies;
  • Technical support for hospitality businesses from agencies such as the EPA and Energy Commission;
  • Investment facilitation through the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre for eco-friendly tourism projects.

Looking ahead, he noted that the government has plans to integrate green building standards into all new public infrastructure, promote renewable energy, waste-to-energy solutions, and water recycling, and deepen alignment with climate adaptation strategies.

“The future of sustainable hospitality is not a distant ambition,” he concluded. “It is a present reality that calls for deliberate action today.”

Adding her voice to the occasion, Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, Minister of State for Public Sector Reforms, who gave a speech on behalf of the Tourism Minister

“Tourism is one of Ghana’s most powerful economic engines,” she said, referencing the sector’s $4.8 billion contribution to GDP in 2024. “But it cannot grow at the expense of clean air, safe water, thriving ecosystems and well-preserved heritage.”

She cited coastal erosion in Cape Coast and Keta, the fragile ecosystem at Lake Bosomtwe, and the threats to forest reserves like Kakum and Mole as proof that climate and biodiversity challenges are already altering Ghana’s tourism landscape.

“The Green Stay Initiative is timely and essential,” she said. “It calls on all of us to move beyond business-as-usual, and to place sustainability at the heart of tourism policy, planning and practice.”

As the Green Stay Initiative moves from concept to implementation, Mövenpick has pledged to hold quarterly workshops and collaborate with policy, academic, and industry partners to build capacity across the sector.

Mr Adjei reminded attendees that every small, sustainable decision from reusing towels to sourcing local food can create lasting impact.

“Let us make today the beginning of a new chapter,” he said. “One where sustainability is not a department or a label, but a way of thinking, building, and living.”

Ghana Tourism Faces Decline As ATRN Calls For Stronger Leadership And Marketing

0

Published on
September 28, 2025

Hotels, attractions, and restaurants in ghana face declining visitor numbers as the africa tourism research network warns of leadership and marketing gaps.

Ghana tourism industry, once celebrated as a vital pillar of economic development and cultural diplomacy, is currently experiencing a concerning decline. The Africa Tourism Research Network (ATRN) has raised alarm over this downward trajectory, pointing to inadequate commitment, absence of clear direction, and the lack of consistent domestic marketing by tourism authorities. Ghana, which has long been recognized for its rich cultural heritage, diverse attractions, and potential as a leading destination in Africa, now risks losing its competitive edge on the global tourism stage.

The realities were highlighted in a recent press release shared with the Ghana News Agency. The release, signed by Emmanuel Frimpong, President of ATRN, outlined that engagements with stakeholders in six different regions painted a troubling picture. Hotels, restaurants, and attraction sites were reported to be struggling to attract adequate numbers of visitors. The network emphasized that a robust tourism sector requires vision, promotion, and leadership. Unfortunately, the lack of sustained leadership direction and a unified marketing strategy has left the sector underutilized while competing African destinations accelerate their efforts.

Stakeholder Insights Across Regions

The ATRN’s research, which involved conversations with operators across six regions, revealed daily struggles within the industry. Hotel owners expressed difficulty in sustaining operations, citing low occupancy rates and inconsistent visitor inflows. Restaurants that once thrived on both local traffic and international guests reported reduced patronage, while many cultural and natural attraction sites noted declining footfall that threatened their survival. These findings indicate not isolated issues but a widespread slowdown affecting the fabric of Ghana’s tourism ecosystem.

Operators stressed that the absence of structured campaigns and bold promotional drives has left them vulnerable in a rapidly evolving global market. While Ghana remains home to world-acclaimed heritage such as Cape Coast Castle, Elmina Castle, Kakum National Park, and thriving cultural festivals, the visibility of these assets has weakened, failing to generate the attention they deserve on both domestic and international platforms.

Tourism as a Pillar of Growth

For years, tourism in Ghana has been hailed as a significant player in economic diversification, job creation, and cultural diplomacy. The sector has the ability to employ thousands, boost hospitality businesses, and spotlight Ghana as a premier African destination. The network highlighted that tourism is not just about leisure but also about shaping a national identity, attracting conversations around history, and opening doors for global citizens to connect with Ghana’s story.

Despite this potential, recent evidence suggests that Ghana is falling behind. Countries such as Rwanda, Kenya, and South Africa continue to launch bold policies and well-funded campaigns that position their unique offerings at the forefront of global tourism platforms. Their efforts highlight strong leadership and a strategic vision that Ghana’s approach currently lacks.

The Role of Vision and Leadership

Tourism thrives on more than just attractions; it requires collaboration, brand cohesion, and continuous storytelling. According to the ATRN, the absence of a strong vision has created a vacuum in Ghana’s sector. Without sustained leadership direction, operators have been left to their own limited means of promotion, which remains fragmented and inconsistent.

Leadership, in this context, goes beyond policy creation to include building narratives around Ghana’s identity. Countries making strides in tourism have invested not only in infrastructure but also in branding their destinations with precision and creativity. Ghana’s leadership, the ATRN noted, must urgently step in to unify stakeholders, provide long-term policy roadmaps, and actively drive both domestic and international marketing campaigns.

Lack of Domestic Marketing Strategy

One of the most concerning revelations from ATRN’s statement was the lack of effective domestic marketing. The Ghanaian population itself represents an immense market of potential travelers. Promotion of internal tourism can stabilize the industry, bringing foot traffic to lesser-known attractions and sustaining businesses that might otherwise close due to reliance on international arrivals.

However, marketing efforts within Ghana have been minimal and sporadic. The campaign spirit that once carried initiatives such as Year of Return, which attracted thousands of African diaspora visitors in 2019, appears to have faded, leaving no ongoing domestic equivalent to maintain momentum. With a strong focus on external travelers, internal tourism opportunities have remained underdeveloped.

Comparative Gap With Other African Nations

The ATRN emphasized that while Ghana slows, its counterparts on the continent surge ahead with clear, coordinated campaigns. Rwanda, with its gorilla trekking experiences, has positioned itself as a model of eco-tourism. Kenya continues to draw global attention with its safari branding, while South Africa’s diversity in culture, nature, and adventure has kept it at the forefront of African tourism promotion.

These examples underline how aggressive marketing, coupled with structured leadership, can place nations on the global tourism map. The gap between these efforts and Ghana’s relatively slow response underscores the urgency needed in reversing the decline before the sector loses more of its ground.

Economic and Social Implications

The downturn in Ghana’s tourism directly impacts the economy. Reduced visitor inflow translates to fewer jobs in hotels, airlines, logistics, and cultural enterprises. Restaurants and hospitality hubs see fewer customers, and artisans producing crafts or cultural merchandise face shrinking markets. The chain effect reduces income, tax revenues, and foreign exchange potential.

Beyond economics, the social implications are equally serious. Tourism represents an opportunity to project Ghana’s story globally. Each visitor encounter is a chance to tell narratives of heritage, resilience, creativity, and unity. A weaker tourism industry reduces Ghana’s opportunity for cultural diplomacy and minimizes its role in shaping African identity on the world stage.

The Call for Action

The ATRN’s statement serves as a wake-up call for urgent transformation. If Ghana intends to reclaim its place as a leader in African tourism, deliberate steps are required. Sustained investment in marketing campaigns, tourism infrastructure, and human resource training must be pursued. Additionally, regional collaboration across West Africa could promote cross-border tourism packages that attract larger visitor groups.

More critically, the role of leadership cannot be understated. Policy leadership must emerge with bold vision and direction, ensuring Ghana’s tourism potential is no longer underutilized but fully harnessed for development, cultural pride, and economic sustainability.

Conclusion

The decline in Ghana’s tourism industry, as highlighted by the Africa Tourism Research Network, serves not as a discouragement but as a reminder of the vast untapped potential still within reach. The road to revival is clear: structured leadership, visionary strategies, and sustained promotion are the foundations on which a thriving tourism sector must be built. Ghana’s cultural richness, combined with its natural charm, still holds the power to attract the world. The challenge now lies in building the coordinated leadership and promotion required to transform potential into prosperity.

The Seychelles presidential election will go to a runoff between opposition leader Patrick Herminie and incumbent President Wavel Ramkalawan after no clear winner emerged in the first round of voting, the electoral commission said on Sunday.

Ramkalawan had been looking to block a comeback by the party that previously dominated politics for four decades in Africa’s wealthiest country per capita.

The western Indian Ocean archipelago is a magnet for investment and security cooperation with China, Gulf nations and India.

Herminie, head of the United Seychelles (US) party, secured 48.8% of the vote, while Ramkalawan, of the Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS), followed closely with 46.4%, the electoral commission said.

Neither candidate surpassed the 50% threshold required for an outright victory in the first round.

The US party also made significant gains in the National Assembly, winning 15 constituency seats and an additional four seats through proportional representation, giving it a clear parliamentary majority.

LDS won 11 constituency seats and four proportional seats, leaving the ruling party behind its main rival in the legislative chamber.

In the presidential race, the two front-runners will now face off in a decisive second round scheduled to be held from October 9 to 11.

Nearly 82% of registered voters participated in the first round, which was held from Thursday to Saturday, the electoral commission said.

Elubo government hospital struggles as health workers reject postings

0

Authorities at the Elubo Government Hospital say the persistent refusal of health personnel to accept postings to the facility has left key units and modern equipment underutilised.

Medical Superintendent of the 65-bed hospital, Dr Zachariah Musah, raised the concern during a visit by Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, on Sunday, September 28.

He explained that although the facility is new, well-equipped, and even attracts patients from neighbouring Ivory Coast, operations are being hampered by a shortage of staff.

Elubo, the capital of the Jomoro Municipality and the largest town on Ghana’s western border with the Ivory Coast, has a large population made up of residents, travellers, as well as customs and immigration personnel. To meet their health needs, the Elubo Government Hospital was commissioned in 2023 with modern infrastructure.

The hospital has a capacity for 120 staff, but both the Medical Superintendent and the Hospital Administrator noted that the continued refusal of postings is crippling its operations, partly due to the lack of adequate accommodation for personnel.

Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson, visibly disappointed, questioned why the Ghana Health Service continues to keep and pay health workers who refuse transfers to places where their services are urgently needed.

In a related development, Immigration officials at Elubo also raised concerns about the absence of a designated parking area for trucks carrying chemicals used in mining explosives. They explained that, due to the lack of appropriate facilities, such trucks are often forced to park dangerously within the town during processing.

The Immigration Service also appealed for permanent accommodation for its personnel. In response, the Regional Minister directed the Jomoro Municipal Chief Executive to ensure proper parking facilities for trucks transporting explosives and to prioritise accommodation needs for security officers.
