Beautiful Two-Piece Fashion Inspires Women Across Africa

0

Fashion has become an important part of everyday life. Many people express their personality and confidence through what they wear. One style that is gaining attention among women is the beautiful two-piece outfit. It is simple, elegant, and stylish.

The two-piece outfit is unique because it allows women to mix and match in creative ways. A matching set gives a classy look, while separate pieces can be combined with other clothes for different occasions. This makes it one of the most versatile outfits for women of all ages.

Many fashion lovers admire the way two-piece outfits highlight natural beauty. The style gives room for comfort while still looking smart and attractive. It can be worn at weddings, parties, or even casual events. This makes it a perfect choice for women who want to look good without stress.

Designers have also added their creativity to this trend. They use bright colors, lace, silk, and African prints to give the outfit a unique identity. This combination of modern and traditional styles makes it even more appealing. Women are now able to celebrate their culture while keeping up with global fashion trends.

Social media has played a big role in promoting two-piece fashion. Many people share pictures of their outfits under popular tags such as #asoebiafrica and #fblifestyle. These tags have made the style go viral, inspiring many young women to try it out.

Fashion is not only about clothing. It is also about confidence. Wearing a beautiful two-piece makes a woman feel bold, elegant, and ready to step into any event. The trend is here to stay because it offers beauty, comfort, and class.

The beautiful two-piece inspiration is more than fashion. It is a lifestyle of elegance.

‘We will hand you over for trial abroad’

President John Dramani Mahama has warned cybercrime perpetrators residing in Ghana that they will be extradited to foreign countries for trial and punished under the law if apprehended.

He gave the warning in Accra during the launch of the National Cyber Security Awareness Month on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

Mr Mahama said cybercrime, particularly romance scams and mobile money fraud, had become more sophisticated, posing threats to national security, the economy and jobs.

He noted that some cases involved insiders within banks and financial institutions who had faced sanctions once exposed.

“Anybody involved in romance scams, whether you are a foreigner or you are a Ghanaian citizen, we will hand you over to be tried and punished accordingly,” the President stated.

His remarks followed an INTERPOL-led operation that dismantled cybercrime networks across Africa. The crackdown, codenamed Operation Contender 3.0, resulted in the arrest of 260 suspected scammers in 14 countries between July 28 and August 11, 2025.

Ghana was part of the exercise, arresting 68 people and seizing 835 devices, including SIM cards, forged documents and USB drives in an increasing crackdown on transnational cybercrime, which has already seen the extradition of some suspects to the United States this year.

Authorities identified 108 victims in Ghana with losses totalling $450,000. About $70,000 of the stolen funds has already been recovered, according to INTERPOL.

The global operation targeted romance scams and sextortion schemes that exploited social media and dating platforms. INTERPOL said suspects in Ghana created fake profiles, used stolen images and demanded payments under false courier or customs claims. In sextortion cases, scammers secretly recorded explicit video chats and used them for blackmail.

Overall, the operation disrupted cybercrime networks linked to an estimated $2.8 million in losses to 1,463 victims worldwide, with 81 digital infrastructures dismantled.

Mr Mahama also cautioned the public against disclosing personal details to fraudsters posing as telecom operators or bankers.

He cited common scams where callers claimed to represent mobile service providers and tricked people into giving away PIN codes. “Your bank will never call you, your telecom provider will never call you and ask for your personal details,” he said.

Announcing new steps, the President said Ghana would inaugurate a Joint Cyber Security Committee (JCCC) to coordinate the work of security and intelligence agencies under the Cyber Security Authority.

He also disclosed that Ghana would ratify the United Nations Convention on Cybercrime this month, building on the Malabo and Budapest Conventions.

He pointed to government initiatives under the Reset Ghana Agenda, including the One Million Coders Programme, the Digital Jobs Initiative and a $50 million FinTech Growth Fund.

According to him, these programmes would prepare young people for opportunities in the digital economy while strengthening national defences against cyber threats.

Mr Mahama stressed that ordinary citizens were the first line of defence against online crime and urged them to be cautious. “A simple click can have consequences,” he said, adding that vigilance online was as important as caution in daily life.

U.S. Visa restrictions reversal came at no financial cost

0

President John Dramani Mahama has made it clear that the recent lifting of U.S. visa restrictions on Ghanaian nationals was achieved purely through diplomatic engagement, with no financial agreement involved.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of Ghana’s new Ambassadors and High Commissioners on Wednesday, October 1, President Mahama addressed growing speculation surrounding the reversal of the visa sanctions.

He confirmed that the United States’ decision to restore full visa privileges, including five-year multiple-entry B1/B2 visitor visas, was the result of negotiations focused on resolving mutual concerns—not financial compensation.

“Many of you are aware that Ghana became the only country subject to U.S. visa restrictions to secure a complete reversal from the Trump administration,” President Mahama stated. “Let me state clearly that this outcome was negotiated in Ghana’s best interest… and let me also emphasise that there was no financial consideration as part of the understanding between Ghana and the United States.”

The President highlighted that one of the key sticking points in the discussions was the issue of visa overstays, particularly among student visa holders and members of official delegations who fail to return home.

“I mean, these are people who go and instead of coming back, they decide to stay. And so they [the U.S. authorities] have the record,” he explained. “So when they draw the threshold and you’re above it, then they cancel your five-year visas and bring you to B-5, B-3.”

President Mahama urged all Ghanaians travelling abroad to respect visa conditions, warning that the actions of a few could negatively impact visa access for the broader population.

“So those of you applying for visas, please, when you go, come back, because you affect everybody else,” he said.

The visa sanctions, originally imposed in July 2025 by the Trump Administration, reduced visa validity for Ghanaians to three months and were part of broader measures targeting countries with high visa overstay rates.

The breakthrough was officially announced on September 26, by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who revealed that the U.S. decision was communicated during a high-level bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. U.S.

Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, confirmed the change, describing it as a sign of deepening Ghana–U.S. ties.

The lifting of the restrictions has been widely hailed as a diplomatic win for Ghana and a testament to the strength of its foreign policy engagements under President Mahama’s leadership.

Ghana doesn’t have a functioning music industry

KiDi said the absence of a supportive system has prevented him from reaching his full potential KiDi said the absence of a supportive system has prevented him from reaching his full potential

Award-winning Ghanaian singer, KiDi, has shared his frustration about the state of the creative space in Ghana, stating that the country does not have a functional music industry.

The Lynx Entertainment artiste, in an interview with Hitz FM, argued that despite the global recognition of Ghanaian music, what exists is merely a label without the necessary structures to support it.

“Industry does this, industry does that, but from where I sit, we do not have an industry. It’s there in name, like the Ghana music industry, but we don’t have the structures that make us an industry. We’re just floating, doing our best with the little resources we have,” he said.

Lots of businessmen have lost interest in Ghana’s creative space – Ashis

He expressed personal frustration about his own career trajectory, lamenting that after a decade of releasing numerous hit songs, the absence of a supportive system has prevented him from reaching his full potential.

“After 10 years of all the hits I’ve had, if we had structures, I should be a mega superstar. But it’s one man for himself. You and your team have to find money for videos, for promotion, for everything,” he explained.

KiDi pointed out that this lack of infrastructure affects even the country’s top artistes, forcing everyone to operate individually.

“If you speak to Sarkodie, or Shatta Wale, or Stonebwoy, everybody is striving on their own with their own team, trying to form their plans and marketing strategies. But we don’t have anything,” he said.

Beyond the artistes, KiDi emphasized that DJs, video directors, bloggers, presenters, and dancers are all integral parts that have been overlooked.

“When problems come, we blame the artistes. If the artiste goes up, the DJ goes up, the blogger goes up, and the radio presenter goes up. Everybody in the ecosystem goes up. But we’ve left the artistes on an island and said, ‘You are the industry; do what you have to do,” he observed.

His comments join the conversation about the need for structural reforms to build a sustainable and collective entertainment industry in Ghana.

Recently, in an interview with GhanaWeb, talent manager Nana Poku Ashis pointed out the problem of a lack of structure to help sustain the creative industry. Hence, a dependence on government to aid the industry.

The Member of Parliament for Twifo Atti-Morkwa in the Central Region, Theophilus Dominic VonDee, has clarified comments he made regarding a viral video showing an assistant headmaster of KNUST Senior High School fondling a female student.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, VonDee said portions of his earlier remarks on Adom TV were taken out of context.

“Portions of the statement I made during the discussion were taken out of context and circulated, which suggested that I sided with the head tutor in the relationship he had with the student. Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to plead with all of you and with all Ghanaians who may be watching me now that if that video played by Adom TV caused any discomfort to anybody, I apologize for that comment. However, I never meant to side with the tutor,” he said.

MultiChoice Ghana has apologised over FAQ error on DStv value offer MultiChoice Ghana has apologised over FAQ error on DStv value offer

MultiChoice Ghana, the owner of DStv Ghana, has apologised to the general public over an FAQ that appeared to contradict the announcement of a deal on the pricing and value of its services.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the company explained that the FAQ created the wrong impression that it was at odds with the upgraded DStv package value announced by the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George.

“Following the recent joint press conference with the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, the National Communications Authority, MultiChoice Africa, and MultiChoice Ghana, we wish to clarify the FAQs published on our website, which created an erroneous impression of a contradiction regarding the DStv value offering, which is effective today, 1 October 2025. We would like to clarify as follows,” parts of the statement read.

The company further clarified that the minister’s announcement reflected the actual deal reached, and not what was communicated in the FAQ.

‘It’s just a promotion’ – MultiChoice counters Sam George again over DStv packages

“We fully support the joint media statement that was issued by the Honourable Minister, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, and implementation of same has already commenced. As contained in the said joint media statement regarding the value offering, the Committee will reconvene in three (3) months to evaluate the impact of this initiative. This will be a periodic exercise.

“There is no restriction on a subscriber’s choice of bouquet. This offer is available to both existing, returning, and new customers from 1st October 2025,” the company added.

The statement concluded with an apology, “We apologise for any inconvenience the FAQs may have caused.”

Sam George had earlier announced that DStv subscribers in Ghana would enjoy between 33% and 50% more value on their subscriptions from Wednesday, October 1, 2025, following an agreement between the Ministry and MultiChoice Africa.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, September 29, 2025, he noted that MultiChoice Africa had committed to rolling out an unprecedented value offer in Ghana, giving subscribers between 33% and 50% more value depending on their package.

‘My son’s whole body is full of shrapnel’

0

Ahmed Abdul Rahman can hear the thud of artillery from where he lies in a makeshift cluster of tents in the Sudanese city of el-Fasher.

The 13-year-old boy was injured in a recent shelling attack.

“I feel pain in my head and my legs,” he says weakly.

For 17 months the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have besieged el-Fasher, located in their ethnic heartland of Darfur, and now they’re closing in on key military sites in the city.

The conflict in Sudan broke out in 2023 following a power struggle between the top commanders of the RSF and the Sudanese army.

After losing control of the capital Khartoum the paramilitaries have stepped up efforts to seize el-Fasher – the army’s last stronghold in the western Darfur region.

Army-held territory has shrunk to a pocket around the airport. For the tens of thousands of civilians trapped inside the city, each day is a nightmare.

The siege and fighting make it very difficult to get reliable information, but the BBC has worked with freelance journalists inside el-Fasher to get an insight into life for those trapped there.

Ahmed’s “whole body is full of shrapnel”, says his mother Islam Abdullah. “His condition is unstable.”

But with hospitals coming under fire and running out of supplies, medical care is scarce.

She lifts Ahmed’s shirt to reveal his wounds, his bony back a reminder of the hunger stalking the city.

Nearby, Hamida Adam Ali is unable to move, her leg is badly injured. She lay on the road for five days after being hit by shell fire, before she was carried to the camp for people displaced by the conflict.

“I don’t know if my husband is dead or alive,” she says. “My children have been crying for days because there is no food. Sometimes they find something to eat and sometimes they go to bed without food. My leg is rotting – it smells foul now. I am just lying down. I have nothing.”

The RSF have made significant advances in recent weeks. They’ve released footage showing their fighters in a location which the BBC has identified as the headquarters of the military’s armoured corps.

There are other bases nearby that Sudan’s army, including its Sixth Infantry Division, is still defending.

In the past few days, it has posted a video of soldiers said to be cheering the arrival of much-needed supplies, reported to be delivered by airdrops.

But in the media warfare that frames the battles, RSF fighters celebrate what they portray as imminent victory in el-Fasher.

Seizing full control of the city would give them a strategic advantage in the civil war after setbacks earlier this year, easing their access to Libya and strengthening their control over the western border in an arc stretching from South Sudan to parts of Egypt, Sudanese analyst Kholood Khair tells the BBC.

“The RSF would be able to bring in more fuel from southern Libya, more weapons, also from southern Libya, and would be able to safeguard their transit from the border region all the way into Darfur,” she says.

“And from el-Fasher, the RSF would be able to launch attacks into both the Kordofan regions and into the capital [Khartoum] again. And so, it would really position the RSF much more strongly militarily.”

Local armed groups known as the Joint Forces fighting alongside the army also have a lot at stake.

“For the Joint Forces, this is a fight for their homelands,” says Ms Khair. “This is a fight for their ability as armed groups to claim constituencies in Darfur. If they lose Darfur, they effectively no longer have a claim to any part of Darfur… It’s a fight for their political survival.”

The RSF advance is powered by increasingly deadly and sophisticated drones said to be supplied by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), something the wealthy Gulf state denies despite evidence from investigations by war monitors, including UN experts.

Footage verified by the BBC shows drones hitting what looks to be a location near a military site, but also an informal market – civilians are not spared.

Last month more than 75 people were killed in a strike on a mosque during morning prayers, in an attack blamed on the RSF, although it didn’t publicly take responsibility. Rescuers could not find enough funeral shrouds for all the bodies.

Samah Abdullah Hussein says her young son Samir was buried in that mass grave. He had been killed the day before, his brother injured. The shells hit the school yard where they had taken refuge.

“He was hit in the head and the wound was deep, his brain came out,” she says, wiping tears from her eyes. “My other son was hit in the head by shrapnel and in his arm, and I was hit in my right leg.”

Hundreds of thousands have fled el-Fasher over the past year. Those who make it to safety say people were attacked, robbed and killed as they left.

The UN warns of more atrocities if RSF fighters overrun the city.

The paramilitaries deny targeting non-Arab ethnic groups, such as the local Zaghawa community, despite evidence of war crimes presented by the UN and human rights groups. They’re trying to send a different message – with new videos showing them greeting and helping those who flee.

The footage is a jolt for a refugee watching from outside the country, despite its softer tone. He recognizes many of the people stopped by the RSF fighters.

“That last guy we used to play soccer with,” he tells the BBC, “and the one in the middle, he’s a musician, I know him from el-Fasher.”

The refugee also sees some relatives in the group – and asked not to be named in order to protect them.

“It really devastated and shocked me,” he says. “I will be worried until I hear from them, or they send me a message that they are OK, and they’re in a safe place.”

Later that day he sent me word that his family members were safe – a tremendous relief, but a temporary one.

“It’s not just my relatives,” he says. “It’s about all the people that I know. It’s about my memories there. I see every day, people whom I know die, places that I used to go to destroyed. My memories died, not just the people that I know. It’s like a nightmare.”

Many fear what the next weeks might bring. Those still trapped in the city can only wait – and try to survive.

African Dress Styles for Women: A Blend of Heritage, Elegance, and Modernity

0

African dress styles for women are a stunning representation of the continent’s rich heritage, diversity, and vibrant culture. With their bold prints, intricate designs, and graceful silhouettes, these outfits transcend fashion to tell stories of identity, tradition, and beauty. As African designer Deola Sagoe once said, “African fashion is not just clothing; it’s an expression of history, pride, and individuality.”

Ankara Dresses: The Versatile Classic

One of the most iconic African styles is the Ankara dress, crafted from brightly colored, patterned fabric. Ankara prints range from geometric to floral motifs, often infused with cultural symbols. These dresses are incredibly versatile—ranging from body-hugging fits to A-line, wrap, or peplum styles. Whether styled long or short, sleeveless or with elaborate sleeves, Ankara is a wardrobe staple suitable for weddings, formal events, or even casual outings.

Dashiki Dresses: Comfort Meets Culture

The Dashiki dress is another favorite, known for its loose fit and vibrant patterns. This style, often worn for casual occasions, offers both comfort and cultural pride. Its free-flowing nature has historically symbolized freedom and ease, making it perfect for women who want effortless style while staying connected to tradition.

The Regal Boubou

In West Africa, the Boubou stands out as a symbol of elegance and sophistication. This flowing garment, often adorned with embroidery or beadwork, is not just clothing—it’s a statement of grace. Worn at weddings, religious gatherings, and festive celebrations, the Boubou combines modesty with luxury, making it a timeless choice for women across generations.

The Sophisticated Kaftan

For more formal occasions, the Kaftan is a go-to style. Often made with luxurious fabrics like silk or velvet, kaftans are designed with flowing lines and intricate embellishments. Their elegance makes them a favorite at galas, weddings, and evening parties. Beyond their glamour, kaftans also embody comfort, proving that style does not need to compromise ease.

African Maxi Dresses

Maxi dresses made from African fabrics are equally striking. With silhouettes ranging from off-shoulder to halter neck, these dresses combine cultural artistry with modern elegance. Whether at the beach or a night event, African maxi dresses bring both comfort and sophistication.

Final Thoughts

African dress styles for women are far more than fashion—they are a celebration of culture, heritage, and individuality. From the bold Ankara to the regal Boubou, each style reflects the richness of African identity while embracing contemporary flair.

AGOA Expires: What’s Next For Ghanaian Exporters?

0

Yesterday, September 30, 2025, marked the end of an era for Ghanaian and African exporters as the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) officially expires after 25 years of duty-free access to the U.S. market.

For two decades, AGOA was more than a trade arrangement – it was a lifeline for businesses, a source of foreign exchange, and a catalyst for industrialisation.

Ghana’s cocoa derivatives, processed fruits, apparel, and other goods found a competitive footing in the United States largely because of the preferential access AGOA guaranteed.

But as the curtain falls, exporters now confront an uncertain terrain. From today, Ghanaian products entering the U.S. market could face tariffs of up to 15%, instantly eroding competitiveness and thinning already tight margins.

For companies that have built supply chains, financing structures, and employment models around AGOA preferences, the shift is seismic.

The expiration of AGOA is not merely a technical trade development; it is a defining moment for Ghana’s economic direction. The policy conversation must now move beyond lamenting the loss of duty-free access to shaping a forward-looking growth agenda. Exporters and policymakers alike must ask: What next?

For Ghana, this means accelerating efforts to diversify exports beyond raw materials, investing in value addition, and building stronger trade resilience. Overreliance on external preferences such as AGOA has proven precarious. The future will depend on how quickly the country can harness its strengths — competitive agriculture, a budding manufacturing sector, and a youthful labor force — to reposition for global markets.

New Opportunities In A Shifting Landscape

While the end of AGOA appears like a setback, it also opens new opportunities. Firstly, Ghanaian businesses can re-orient toward niche markets within Africa and beyond, where rising demand for processed foods, textiles, and digital services is less exposed to abrupt policy changes.

Secondly, exporters can explore bilateral deals with the U.S. or other partners, pressing for terms that reflect mutual interests rather than broad continental preferences.

Equally important, the expiration should sharpen Ghana’s focus on industrial policy. Incentives for agro-processing, light manufacturing, and technology-driven exports could reduce dependency on unilateral trade schemes. This shift requires tighter collaboration between government and private sector players to ensure that exporters are not left stranded in the new tariff regime.

AfCFTA: The Unseen Advantage

Perhaps the most underappreciated cushion for Ghana and its peers is the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). While AGOA opened a window to the U.S., AfCFTA offers access to a far larger and closer market: 1.4 billion Africans with a combined GDP of $3.4 trillion.

By deepening regional integration, AfCFTA can absorb much of the shock from AGOA’s expiry. For Ghana, which hosts the AfCFTA Secretariat in Accra, this is an opportunity to lead by example. Streamlining border protocols, eliminating non-tariff barriers, and improving logistics infrastructure would allow Ghanaian exporters to pivot more effectively into African markets.

Intra-African trade currently accounts for just 15% of the continent’s commerce; if Ghana can capture even a small share of the growth potential, it could offset the losses from U.S. market access.

Moreover, AfCFTA provides a platform for industrial collaboration. Instead of competing as individual countries, African firms can develop regional value chains — for instance, Ghana processing cocoa and partnering with Nigeria’s packaging industry or Kenya’s logistics firms to deliver products at scale. Such cooperation could create a more resilient base of export-driven growth than AGOA ever allowed.

Did African leaders miss the moment?

One hard question lingers: did Africa’s leaders squander the opportunity to negotiate as a bloc? For years, African ambassadors in Washington lobbied separately for AGOA’s renewal, often focusing on country-specific advantages rather than continental strategy. The result was a fragmented approach that left the continent vulnerable when U.S. political winds shifted.

A united African front, leveraging the combined weight of AfCFTA, might have secured better and longer-lasting terms. Instead, Africa’s dependence on unilateral concessions left its exporters exposed to sudden reversals. The lesson is clear: Africa must speak with one voice in global trade negotiations. Without it, the continent risks being played off piecemeal in a world increasingly defined by blocs and mega-deals.

Charting Ghana’s Growth Agenda

So, where does Ghana go from here? Three priorities stand out.

Invest in value addition: Exporting raw cocoa beans and unprocessed fruits will not sustain long-term growth. Ghana must push aggressively into value chains that capture more revenue at home — from chocolate manufacturing to processed juices and textiles.

Strengthen regional integration: With AfCFTA on its doorstep, Ghana has no excuse not to maximize intra-African trade. Policies that reduce logistics costs, harmonize standards, and expand industrial zones will be key.

Negotiate smartly with global partners: The era of waiting for unilateral trade gifts must end. Ghana should pursue reciprocal, strategic agreements that protect its exporters and create predictable frameworks for long-term investment.

A Test Of Resilience

AGOA’s expiry yesterday is not just the end of a trade agreement. It is a wake-up call for Ghana and Africa to craft a growth path rooted in self-reliance, smart partnerships, and regional collaboration. For businesses that have thrived under AGOA, the adjustment will be painful, but it could also spark the innovation and resilience needed for the next chapter of Ghana’s trade story.

The question is no longer whether AGOA will be renewed. It is whether Ghana, and Africa at large, can seize this moment to pivot from dependence to independence in shaping their economic futures.

State of emergency in Ghana; What does it mean for Gen-Z?

0

“State of Emergency!” This might sound like the title of a Netflix thriller or a trending hashtag on TikTok to the Gen Z, but in real life, it’s a country’s way of hitting the big red panic button when things get really serious.

Think wars, floods, pandemics, or violent clashes.

For Gen Z, who live online 24/7, like to be “outside” and don’t like long grammar, outspoken, creative, and highly connected.

They thrive on social media, value freedom of expression, and are quick to mobilize online movements.

A generation that balances “soft life” vibes seeking comfort, self-expression, and opportunities with a deep concern for social justice, jobs, and their future, this matters because it could affect your movement, your social life, and even how businesses run.

It’s about knowing what happens to our freedoms, our businesses, and even our Friday night hangouts if the country suddenly switches into crisis mode.

Imagine your “outside” life coming to a halt, road trips, the Sunday fufu and trying new places seized due to some greedy folks who do not care about your peace and sanity and have decided to destroy the country’s forest and water bodies.

No concerts, no link-ups, no weekend flexing. Social media, their main playground, might face tighter monitoring, dimming their loud online voices.

Think of a state of emergency as Ghana’s “crisis mode button.” It is the government’s way of saying that normal systems aren’t enough to handle a serious threat like war, violent unrest, a pandemic, or a natural disaster.

It gives the state special powers to move faster, but the Constitution makes sure it is not a free-for-all. There are rules, checks, and time limits built in.

Now let’s bring it closer to home. Recently, there has been a loud chorus of voices calling for Ghana to declare a state of emergency over illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Civil society groups, labour unions, and even the Ghana Journalists Association are saying galamsey isn’t just an environmental issue anymore; it’s a full-blown crisis.

Rivers are poisoned, forests destroyed, communities losing livelihoods, and water scarcity is looming.

If clean water is at risk, that’s literally life at risk. And under the Constitution, that could qualify as grounds for emergency powers.

But here’s the catch: Declaring a state of emergency in galamsey zones could mean tighter control curfews in mining areas, heavy military presence, shutting down illegal operations overnight. It might fast-track environmental cleanup and protect water bodies.

For Gen Z, that could mean safer drinking water in the future and less toxic land, but also restrictions on movement in affected communities and possible job losses for those who depend on small-scale mining.

The hustle and grind you put in to afford “the soft” life you want is pushed back, days, months or even a year. How would you survive?

In Ghana, only the President can declare a state of emergency. Even then, the President cannot just wake up and do it alone. He must first act on the advice of the Council of State, then issue an official proclamation in the government Gazette.

The moment this happens, Parliament must be informed immediately, with the facts and reasons clearly laid out. Parliament has seventy-two hours to decide whether to approve or reject the proclamation. If Parliament does nothing, the declaration lapses after seven days.

If a majority of MPs vote in favour, the emergency can run for three months, and any extension after that must be renewed month by month. Parliament also has the power to revoke it at any time, which means the executive cannot hold onto emergency powers unchecked.

The Constitution goes further to make sure people’s rights are not erased completely. During a state of emergency, some freedoms like movement, assembly, or even expression can be restricted if the situation demands it. Curfews, checkpoints, and bans on large gatherings are examples of measures that may come into play.

However, core rights such as the right to life and freedom from torture cannot be suspended under any circumstances. When someone is detained during an emergency, the law insists on strict safeguards: the detainee must be told the reason for their arrest in writing within twenty-four hours, their family must be notified, and after ten days a tribunal made up of judges must review the case.

That review is repeated every three months if the detention continues, and once the emergency ends, everyone held under those powers must be released immediately. The courts remain open, and citizens can still challenge abuses through processes like habeas corpus.

For ordinary people, the effects of an emergency declaration are felt in daily routines and in the economy. Nightlife and market activities are often the first to be disrupted because curfews force businesses to close early.

Taxi drivers, food vendors, and others who depend on night-time activity lose income, as happened during the Dagbon crisis in 2002 when Tamale and Yendi were placed under dusk-to-dawn curfew.

At the same time, government resources are often redirected to relief and security efforts, which can slow down normal development projects but bring in aid and emergency assistance.

Investors and businesses also pay close attention, since a prolonged emergency can shake confidence, at least temporarily.

Ghana has been very careful with this tool. Since the 1992 Constitution came into effect, a nationwide state of emergency has never been declared. It has only been used twice in specific regions: first in 1994 during ethnic clashes in the Northern Region, and again in 2002 after the assassination of the Dagbon king.

Both times Parliament renewed the declaration until calm was restored, and both times curfews, heavy security deployments, and stricter media controls became part of daily life. Later crises, such as the 2015 floods in Accra or even the COVID-19 pandemic, were handled with other laws rather than invoking Article 31, showing how rare and serious this measure is.

For Gen Z, the big takeaway is that a state of emergency is not just a dramatic headline. It is a constitutional process that balances swift government action with democratic oversight. It changes how society functions for a period of time, limiting certain freedoms while focusing on restoring order and protecting lives.

And because Parliament and the courts remain involved every step of the way, it is also a reminder that even in crisis, the rule of law still matters.

Not everyone thinks it’s the magic fix, though. Some experts warn that the galamsey problem is so deep tied to politics, corruption, and poverty that a state of emergency might end up hurting innocent people more than stopping the real culprits. Others fear it could give government too much power, risking abuse in the name of “fighting galamsey.”

So here’s the bottom line. A state of emergency is Ghana’s way of saying, “things are out of hand, let’s act fast.” It gives the government muscle to tackle urgent threats, but the Constitution makes sure that muscle has limits.

In the galamsey debate, declaring a state of emergency could show just how seriously the country takes the fight to save our environment.

But like every power move, it’s a double-edged sword and Gen Z needs to understand both sides, because the choices made today will shape the Ghana we inherit tomorrow.

The statement concluded with an apology: “We apologise for any inconvenience the FAQs may have caused.”

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, September 29, 2025, he noted that MultiChoice Africa had committed to rolling out an unprecedented value offer in Ghana, giving subscribers between 33% and 50% more value depending on their package.

The next NPP government will fully complete Agenda 111 hospital projects – Bawumia

0

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has assured Ghanaians that the next NPP government will fully complete the Agenda 111 hospital projects, describing it as one of the most transformative healthcare initiatives in Ghana’s history.

The programme, launched under the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, was designed to provide every district without a hospital with a modern 100-bed facility, complete with accommodation for doctors, nurses, and other health workers.

It also included the construction of regional hospitals in the six newly created regions, rehabilitation of the Effia Nkwanta Hospital in the Western Region, and two new psychiatric hospitals in Kumasi and Tamale.

Although many of the facilities had reached advanced stages of completion by the end of 2024, Dr Bawumia accused the NDC government of abandoning the project.

Speaking to constituency executives and former NPP officials in the Greater Accra Region at the start of a three-day engagement, Dr Bawumia expressed concern about the stalled works.

“When we were in government, we introduced policies and programmes designed to improve the lives of every Ghanaian. Some of the major policies were the introduction of the Medical Drone delivery service, a massive expansion and retooling of the National Ambulance Service, and the provision of healthcare infrastructure under Agenda 111, to ensure that we have an enhanced healthcare system in Ghana.

“But sadly, the new government seems to have abandoned this major investment in healthcare. Nine months into their tenure, there is no indication that they are completing them to improve access to healthcare. This is very worrying.

“I promise you: If they don’t complete them, the next NPP government will fully complete the implementation of this very important investment into our lives and save many lives, even those unborn.

“Completing these hospitals will not just help to save lives but will also create many different jobs for the youth of Ghana.”

Dr Bawumia emphasised that finishing the Agenda 111 programme will remain a top priority should the NPP return to power.

Education Ministry introduces AI-powered subject Apps for SHSs

0

The Ministry of Education has announced the rollout of Subject-Specific Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications for Senior High Schools (SHS) across the country to improve the teaching and learning of the new SHS curriculum.

The initiative, which is expected to support more than 68,000 teachers in delivering lessons to over 1.4 million learners, is aimed at enhancing education delivery without compromising Ghana’s ethical and cultural values.

The apps were co-created by the Ghana Education Service (GES), the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), the National Teaching Council (NTC), the National School Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA), and the Centre for National Distance Learning and Open Schooling (CENDLOS).

The design also received input from Playlab AI, with support from Transforming Teaching, Education, and Learning (T-TEL) and the Mastercard Foundation.

In a statement issued on October 1, the Ministry stated that the apps are built on Ghana’s curriculum materials, including teacher manuals, learner resources, and frameworks that promote national values, gender equality, and social inclusion.

According to the Ministry, the Apps are designed to help teachers plan lessons and conduct assessments more efficiently while providing learners with interactive and tailored resources.

The statement said the introduction of the AI-based subject apps will play a critical role in strengthening curriculum delivery, bridging gaps in teaching, and equipping both teachers and students with innovative tools to achieve quality learning outcomes.

NPP bold ladies in Eastern Region slam 15 MPs over Bawumia’s endorsement

0

The NPP Bold Ladies of the Eastern Region have expressed strong disappointment with a group of 15 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament, accusing them of placing personal interests above the party’s welfare.

In a statement, the group referenced earlier actions of the MPs, led by Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo, MP for Achiase, who had publicly declared support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at a press conference in the region.

The group condemned the conduct of the lawmakers, describing it as divisive and a betrayal of party unity. They recalled Speaker Alban Bagbin’s caution on July 10, 2024, that the public holds Parliament in low regard because of the behavior of some MPs, which he likened to “kindergarten pupils.”

According to the Bold Ladies, the actions of the 15 MPs exemplify the very concerns raised by the Speaker.

“We wish to register our disapproval towards their actions and assure them that we shall not allow them to mortgage the future of the region and the party at large for their personal gains or gratification. They should be advised that hate and envy can’t and won’t win,” the statement said.

The group further alleged that while Dr. Bryan Acheampong had provided financial support to facilitate the party’s grassroots campaigns during the last general election, some MPs diverted the funds meant for polling stations.

“Many of our members have confirmed receiving the support, just that they were not informed about the source. Some, however, have not received and have expressed anger at some MPs. Anytime Dr. Acheampong mentions the support, it becomes evident that many of the MPs have pocketed the money,” the statement alleged.

The Bold Ladies called on the MPs to refund the monies to their constituencies and show gratitude to Dr. Bryan Acheampong, whom they praised for his contributions to the party.

“Dr. Bryan Acheampong’s campaign is anchored on truth, honesty, transparency, and party unity. He has done what many could not and did not do,” they stressed.

The group insisted that the MPs had “lost the plot and missed the road” and vowed to resist any attempts to undermine Dr. Acheampong’s efforts.

“We shall fight for Dr. Bryan, and we shall fight for our party,” the statement concluded.

The former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has promised that if the John Dramani Mahama-led government fails to complete the Agenda 111 project, the NPP will ensure its completion when they return to power.

Addressing party members during his tour of the Central Region on Wednesday, October 1,2025, he said, “If the NDC does not complete the Agenda 111 project, if we (NPP) come back, we will finish the project.”

$1.7 billion required to complete all stalled Agenda 111 projects – President Mahama

The Agenda 111 project, launched by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on August 17, 2021, covers the design, procurement, construction, equipping, and commissioning of 101 district hospitals; six regional hospitals in newly created regions; one regional hospital in the Western Region; two psychiatric hospitals in Kumasi and Tamale and a redeveloped Accra Psychiatric Hospital.

Kenya offers reward as anger grows over failure to arrest suspected serial killer

0

Collins Jumaisi Khalusha escaped from police custody in August last year Collins Jumaisi Khalusha escaped from police custody in August last year

Kenyan police have offered a reward of 1 million shillings ($7,700; £5,700) for information leading to the arrest of suspected serial killer Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, more than a year after he escaped from their custody.

Khalusha was the prime suspect in the murder of more than 40 women whose mutilated bodies were discovered in a disused quarry that became a dumpsite in the capital, Nairobi.

Shortly after his arrest, he escaped from custody, along with 12 others, after reportedly cutting through a wire mesh roof and scaling a perimeter wall.

It caused outrage, and police are facing a renewed backlash over their failure to hunt down Khalusha more than a year later.

Many Kenyans have questioned how he could have escaped on 20 August 2024 from what is regarded as one of the most secure police stations, located near the US embassy and the UN offices in the capital.

Khalid Hussein, an activist who has been following the case closely, told the BBC that the police were “not serious” about solving the murders of the women they previously identified as being aged between 18 and 30.

He alleged that some bodies were still inside the quarry pits, and “rotting”.

Mr Hussein believes the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced the reward in response to a documentary by the local Citizen TV station about the police’s inaction.

“So as usual they feel embarrassed, they think they should do something and they react and they say 1 million shillings reward. Absolutely useless,” the activist said.

Contacted by the BBC, police spokesman Michael Muchiri referred queries to the DCI, but added that it had previously addressed “the complexities of that matter”, and was “on track to resolving it.”

The DCI said in a post on X that the 1 million shillings reward would be given to “anyone who provides credible information that will assist in the re-arrest of the suspect”.

Police also offered a reward last year, but did not specify the amount.

Several policemen were arrested last year for allegedly aiding Khalusha’s escape, but they were later released on bail.

Many Kenyans questioned how officers had failed to detect that bodies were being left in a quarry around 100m (109 yards) from a police station.

Khalusha had reportedly confessed to his crimes but his lawyer later told a court that he had been tortured.

Speaking to the BBC at the time, the lawyer, John Maina Ndegwa, said the suspect had been “strangled to confess. You could tell he was in distress, terrified and in anguish.”

At the time of Khalusha’s arrest, DCI chief Mohamed Amin said: “It is crystallising that we are dealing with a serial killer, a psychopathic serial killer who has no respect for human life, who has no respect and dignity.”

He had been set to face murder charges in court, just before his disappearance.

Last month, Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen described the escape as being “regrettable” and a “sad story”.

“I’m really hoping that he can be arrested,” he said.

Minority NPP counters Prof Ahwoi’s criticism of Ghana’s decentralisation efforts

The Minority in Parliament has pushed back against recent remarks made by Professor Kwamena Ahwoi, former Minister for Local Government, describing aspects of his submission on Ghana’s decentralisation process as inaccurate and misleading.

Prof Ahwoi, a long-standing advocate for decentralisation, had argued at the National Dialogue on Decentralisation and Responsive Governance that the creation of new districts and regions in recent years amounted to an “overreach” and was counterproductive to effective local governance.

Fashion Styles That Leave a Lasting Impression

0

Special events and parties are the perfect opportunities to showcase your personal style and create unforgettable memories. Whether you are attending as a guest or hosting the occasion, your outfit speaks volumes about your personality and confidence. As fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent once said, “Fashions fade, style is eternal.” Choosing the right look ensures you stand out for all the right reasons.

1. Classic Elegance for Formal Events

When the occasion calls for sophistication, nothing surpasses timeless elegance. For women, floor-length gowns in silk, satin, or velvet exude grace and charm, while men can never go wrong with a well-fitted tuxedo or dark tailored suit. Pairing these ensembles with understated jewelry or sleek cufflinks keeps the look polished yet refined. This style is all about making a dignified entrance that leaves a lasting impression.

2. Bold and Contemporary for Trendsetters

For the fashion-forward, bold styles are the ultimate choice. Women can opt for daring asymmetrical gowns, jumpsuits, or metallic dresses in statement colors like emerald green or burgundy. Sequins and unique cuts add sparkle and flair. Men can experiment with modern suits featuring checks, florals, or vibrant accessories that break away from tradition while keeping the look stylish. Trendsetters thrive on being noticed, and these outfits guarantee just that.

3. Chic and Comfortable for Casual Gatherings

Not every celebration demands a grand outfit. Casual gatherings, such as birthdays or outdoor events, are the perfect occasions to strike a balance between comfort and style. Women may choose maxi dresses, rompers, or flowy jumpsuits, while men can rely on chinos paired with crisp button-down shirts or lightweight blazers. The key is to look relaxed yet polished, ensuring comfort without sacrificing charm.

4. The Celebration Look for Hosts

If you’re hosting, your outfit should command attention without restricting your movement. Women might select gowns or dresses tailored to the event’s theme, enhanced with standout accessories or shoes. Men can elevate their style with a sharp suit or blazer, perhaps in a color that reflects the event’s palette. As the star of the occasion, your look should combine elegance, personality, and ease.

Final Thoughts

Whether it’s a black-tie gala, a casual birthday party, or a personal celebration, your outfit plays a significant role in setting the tone and showcasing your individuality. From timeless gowns to daring modern pieces and chic casual ensembles, there’s a perfect style for every event. Ultimately, the best look is one that makes you feel both confident and comfortable while celebrating life’s special moments.

We fully support Sam George on value upgrade, FAQs an error – MultiChoice

0

MultiChoice Ghana has issued a public clarification, stating that they fully support the government’s recently announced DStv value upgrade and that a misleading FAQ published on their website was an error.

This comes after confusion among customers and media reports suggesting a contradiction between a government statement by Minister of Communication, Samuel Nartey George, and a new three-month DStv promotion running from 1 October to 31 December 2025.

In a statement released on October 1, MultiChoice clarified three key points:

1. The company fully supports the joint statement made by Samuel Nartey George regarding the value upgrade for DStv packages and has already started implementing it.

2. A review committee will meet again in three months to assess the impact of the initiative, suggesting that the rollout is being monitored and may evolve based on feedback and data.

3. The offer applies to all DStv customers—new, returning, and existing—with no restrictions on which bouquet they can choose.

MultiChoice also apologised for the earlier website FAQs, admitting they created the wrong impression of a contradiction with the Minister’s announcement.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Wednesday, Prof Bokpin criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership for not taking decisive action to curb illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, and for failing to drive initiatives that could strengthen the economy.

“We note that the slowdown in the cedi’s depreciation confirms our earlier expectations of stability, supported by stronger FX [foreign exchange] inflows and softer market sentiments. Looking ahead, we maintain a cautiously optimistic near-term outlook, with seasonal FX inflows from commodity exports expected to filter through”, Databank Research said in a report.

It acknowledged that heightened corporate demand, particularly from the services sector ahead of the festive season, may create upside risk.

However, it expects sustained forex support from the Bank of Ghana, underpinned by a strong reserve buffer and positive expectations around the International Monetary Fund’s fifth programme review to anchor its outlook.

In addition, the ongoing U.S. budget stalemate could sustain dollar softness, providing further support to the USD/GHS pair.

Meanwhile, the cedi began this week going for GH¢13.70 to the US dollar in the retail market.

Its year-to-date gain is 15.00 per cent to the American greenback.

In a another development, the government missed its treasury bills target just a week after recording an oversubscription, as some investors continue to prefer fixed deposits and the Bank of Ghana bills.

According to auction results by the Bank of Ghana, the government recorded a 37 per cent undersubscription of the short term instruments.

The Treasury received GH¢3.486 billion of the total bids, but accepted GH¢3.463 billion.

A little over 76 per cent of the bids came from the 91-day bill.

About GH¢2.66 billion of the bids were tendered. The uptake was GH¢2.65 billion.

For the 182-day bill, GH¢705.7 million of the bids were tendered. The bids accepted were estimated to be worth GH¢695.3 million.

Similarly, GH¢119.5 million of the bids were tendered for the 364-day bill. About GH¢116.5 million of the bids were accepted.

Meanwhile, the yield on the 91-day bill increased by 5.0 basis point to 10.50 per cent.

That of the 182-day bill also shot up to 12.39 per cent from 12.36 per cent the preceding week.

My ‘historic’ post was innocent, not a jab at Sarkodie

Stonebwoy explained that the comment was not meant to spite anyone Stonebwoy explained that the comment was not meant to spite anyone

Ghanaian dancehall artiste, Stonebwoy, has addressed the controversy surrounding his use of the word “Historic” in a social media post celebrating his BHIM Concert, just hours after Sarkodie’s Rapperholic concert.

In an recent interview with blogger Mr. Elmi on YouTube, he explained that the comment was not meant to spite anyone, but simply to celebrate what he regarded as a landmark moment for himself.

“When I made that post, it was with a clean heart. A fan of mine had made a post of my BHIM concert video with lyrics of my new song. I noticed it and was proud of the show, so I quoted it with Historic. Because that show itself was historic.

“So when people started attacking me, I didn’t understand. I was like, ‘What did I say?’ It wasn’t a jab or an attack at anyone. I was simply celebrating my own success,” he said.

Stonebwoy’s ‘historic’ comment draws online reactions after Sarkodie’s concert

Stonebwoy said he was taken aback by the backlash that followed his post, emphasising that he had no intention of undermining Sarkodie’s concert or any other event.

He noted that, before the now-infamous post, he had already encouraged fans to go support Sarkodie’s show, describing it also as historic.

“Even before Sarkodie’s show, I had even posted that people should go and support it. That it would be historic. So there wasn’t any ill feeling,” he said.

The narrative that he was trying to compare himself or throw shade, he argued, was a projection of others’ agendas, not his intention.

“Even prior to Sarkodie’s show, I had even posted that people should go and support it. That it would be historic. So there wasn’t any ill feeling,” he said.

Stonebwoy’s clarifications come against a backdrop of public debate around his “Historic” post, which drew both criticism and defense across social media platforms.

Some netizens read the post as a provocation toward Sarkodie’s Rapperholic show, while others defended Stonebwoy’s right to celebrate his own achievements.

Ofori-Atta, in his petition, which has been sighted by GhanaWeb, wants Justice Kulendi removed in accordance with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

He accused the judge of misbehaviour, which is one of the grounds for the removal of Superior Court judges, citing the supposed role he played in the famous Republic v. Cassiel Ato Forson case — the Ambulance case.

Over 500 youth in Ashanti endorse Bryan Acheampong

0

Accra, Oct 1, GNA-The youth of Ghana, led by a strong delegation from the Ashanti Region, have declared their support for Dr. Bryan Acheampong as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2028 general election.
The group was led by 20 constituency youth organizers in the Ashanti region.

The announcement was made at a press conference in Kumasi, described by organizers as the “political nerve centre” of Ghana and the stronghold of the NPP tradition.
The gathering brought together regional executives, constituency leaders, polling station workers, and hundreds of young party members who rallied under a call for unity and visionary leadership.

Speaking on behalf of the youth, the conveners emphasized that Mr Acheampong embodied the temperament and conciliatory spirit needed to prevent post-election divisions within the party.
“Already, emerging rivalries among aspirants portend a perilous path toward fragmentation if not carefully managed,” the statement noted.
“But in the towering figure of Dr. Bryan Acheampong, we discern the only candidate who can mend divisions, heal wounds, and forge a unified party machinery.”

The youth group cited several achievements under Dr Acheampong’s leadership, including:The launch of Planting for Food and Jobs Phase II (PFJ 2.0), which introduced a comprehensive value-chain credit system for farmers, expansion of irrigation projects to ensure all-year farming and food security, reforms at COCOBOD that improved cocoa pricing and protected farmers’ livelihoods, and his role as Chairman of the Côte d’Ivoire–Ghana Cocoa Initiative, which strengthened Ghana’s position in global cocoa negotiations.
They also mentioned interventions during the COVID-19 pandemic that supported rural livelihoods under the ESRF programme and praised Dr Acheampong’s record in education and skills development, pointing to scholarships, vocational training, and infrastructure support across schools.
In his constituency of Abetifi, initiatives have ranged from boreholes and health programmes to NHIS enrollment and entrepreneurial support for apprentices.
Dr Acheampong’s business ventures were also highlighted, particularly Rock City Hotel in Kwahu-Nkwatia, touted as one of Africa’s largest hospitality projects.

The hotel has already created hundreds of jobs while sustaining local businesses across the hospitality value chain.

The conveners framed their endorsement as a call to action for NPP delegates, executives, and polling station officers nationwide.
“We require a leader with competence to govern, charisma to inspire, discipline to instill confidence, delivery to proven credibility, and neutrality to unify the party after internal contests. That leader is Bryan Acheampong,” the youth declared.

The endorsement was wrapped in symbolism, with Kumasi serving as the launchpad for what supporters described as a national movement.
“He is the architect of unity, the custodian of youth empowerment, and the steward of agricultural transformation,” the statement concluded.
As drums rolled and chants echoed, the youth leaders left no doubt about their position: “Bryan Acheampong for Flagbearer 2028 – The Unifier, The Visionary, The Deliverer.”

Togbe Amey Zegu II Dufa of Alakple speaking at the event

The Paramount Chief of Kome-Shime Traditional Area, in the Volta Region, Togbi Amey Zegu II, has made a passionate call for a united front against rising youth drug abuse.

Togbe Amey Zegu was speaking at 2025 Klefe Yam Festival packed durbar attended by dignitaries, including the Chief of Staff at the Office of the Vice President, Alex Segbefia.

Togbi Zegu blended the festival’s cultural celebration with an urgent message of collective responsibility.

He warned that substance abuse threatens the very future of the region’s young people.

“The same spirit of togetherness that sustained our ancestors must guide us in overcoming today’s challenges invoking the Ewe people’s historic migration from Notsie to the Volta plains,” he said.

He pointed out that “Unity is our greatest inheritance and our greatest weapon.”

Togbi Zegu underscored the pivotal role of the younger generation, describing them as “today’s energy, innovation, and hope.”

He commended community projects such as the construction of dormitories at the Klefe Technical Institute, calling vocational education “the cornerstone of independence and entrepreneurship.”

Citing recent surveys, the chief revealed alarming statistics: more than half of secondary school students admit to drinking alcohol, nearly one in five report using marijuana, and more than five percent have experimented with amphetamines.

Cases of tramadol and opioid abuse, he warned, are steadily climbing.

“These are our sons and daughters. If we lose them to drugs, we lose our future,” he warmed.

To counter the crisis, Togbi Zegu outlined an ambitious response, urging a regional alliance of traditional leaders, parents, educators, and law enforcement to confront the menace through education, family mentorship, counselling and rehabilitation, tighter controls on illicit substances, and expanded opportunities for youth employment and skills training.

He called on the people of Volta to draw strength from their shared history, envisioning future festivals that celebrate not only rich harvests but also the triumphs of empowered, drug-free youth. “Let us stand united in history, purpose, and action.”

The 2025 Klefe Yam Festival was on the theme “Youth Empowerment: The Future of Our Community.”

Ghana engaging U.S. over 15% tariff on exports

0

President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that the Government of Ghana is in active negotiations with the United States to resolve a 15% tariff imposed on Ghanaian exports.

The tariff, introduced under an executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump on July 31, has been a point of concern for Ghanaian exporters and policymakers.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the second batch of new Ambassadors and High Commissioners in Accra on Wednesday, October 1, President Mahama emphasised that the discussions also include the potential renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which previously allowed Ghana and other eligible African countries to export goods to the U.S. duty-free.

“Negotiations are ongoing with regard to the trade tariffs of 15% and the renewal of AGOA, which was a zero percent tariff on African nations, and so those negotiations are still ongoing,” President Mahama stated.

AGOA, a landmark U.S. trade preference program enacted in 2000, granted eligible sub-Saharan African countries, including Ghana, duty-free access for thousands of products. The most recent extension expired today, September 30, 2025.

Ghana was a major beneficiary, exporting approximately US$340 million worth of goods under the preferential status.

Key affected sectors include cocoa derivatives, textiles, gold jewellery, cashew, and shea butter.

NPP Primary: Some party members risk being disenfranchised

Charles Bissue is Director of Operations of Kennedy Agyapong’s Campaign Team Charles Bissue is Director of Operations of Kennedy Agyapong’s Campaign Team

Director of Operations of Kennedy Agyapong’s Campaign Team, Charles Bissue, has raised concerns over the registration of former party officers and qualified members ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Primary, scheduled for January 31, 2026.

Bawumia leads Kennedy Agyapong in central and other swing regions, poll shows

In a letter to the NPP Presidential Election Committee on October 1, 2025, Bissue noted that “Several eligible past officers have reported difficulties in completing their registration, primarily due to challenges in obtaining endorsements from constituency chairmen and secretaries. These issues risk disenfranchising qualified members who are entitled to participate in the process.”

He recalled that the party had provided both an online registration link and manual forms for eligible past officers and that “Although the registration deadline was initially set for September 19, 2025, it was extended to September 30, 2025 to accommodate members facing challenges.”

Timelines for NPP’s presidential primaries announced

To resolve the issues, Bissue proposed that “Coordinators of all presidential aspirants within the constituencies meet with constituency party officers to resolve discrepancies and ensure accurate registration. This step will help verify the number of registered members in each constituency before the final voter list is compiled at the national level.”

He added that this measure would enhance the credibility of the party’s voter register and safeguard the rights of all eligible members.

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), has hosted its maiden Vendor Engagement Seminar, reaffirming it’s commitment to strengthening local content and participation in Ghana’s oil and gas industry.

The event which forms part of GNPC’s 40th anniversary celebrations, brought together Ghanaian businesses, vendors, and suppliers under the theme “Promoting Local Content and Local Participation through Vendor Engagement”.

The summit sought to strengthen supplier relationships, promote transparency, and foster deeper collaboration with stakeholders, while reaffirming GNPC’s commitment to efficient procurement, local content development, and sustainable supply chain partnerships.

Opening the session, Chief Executive Officer of GNPC, Kwame Ntow Amoah, emphasized the Corporation’s commitment to inclusive growth: “The theme of this engagement goes to the heart of GNPC’s mandate. For us, Local Content is not merely a regulatory requirement. It is central to our strategy to grow together with local enterprises in a mutually beneficial partnership, ensuring our nation’s resources create real opportunities for our people, businesses, and communities.”

During a technical presentation on tender best practices, Barbara Afriyie-Owusu of the Supply Chain and Local Content Development Department highlighted the pivotal role of compliance in contract processes, describing it as indispensable.

“Compliance is like oxygen—you don’t always notice it, but you cannot survive long without it. Keep your documents ready, make your submissions responsive, and credibility will follow. Trust me, the contract will come,” Afriyie-Owusu noted.

She cautioned against recurring pitfalls such as incomplete forms, missing pages, expired statutory certificates, late submissions, and incorrect file formats. With GNPC’s tender process now fully digital, she added that excuses like traffic delays or narrowly missed deadlines no longer hold, as the system automatically locks at closing time.

GNPC, Petroleum Commission sign joint framework to boost Voltaian Basin Project

Afriyie-Owusu also added that “It is a competition, and everyone wants to win. Paying attention to deadlines, technical specifications, and compliance requirements ensures fairness in the process. GNPC’s doors are open to all, but only those who meet the requirements will succeed.”

The summit also featured presentations from the Petroleum Commission, which outlined Ghana’s local content framework, and the Public Procurement Authority, which introduced the Ghana Electronic Procurement System (GHANEPS) to better equip vendors for efficient tender participation.

The Corporation encouraged businesses to see procurement not as a hurdle but as a pathway to building trust, expanding opportunities, and strengthening Ghanaian participation in the oil and gas sector.

Mahama petitioned to remove Justice Kulendi for misconduct

0

A formal petition has been submitted to President John Dramani Mahama demanding the removal of Supreme Court Judge, Justice Yonny Kulendi, over alleged judicial misconduct.

The petition, which can be confirmed by Citi News, was filed by one Daniel Marfo Ofori-Atta on September 30, 2025, and was addressed to the Office of the President.

In it, the complainant accuses Justice Kulendi of improper interference in proceedings at the High Court in the ongoing ambulance scandal case, Republic v. Cassiel Ato Forson & 2 Others.

According to excerpts of the letter sighted by Citi News, Mr. Ofori-Atta argues that the alleged actions of Justice Kulendi contravene provisions of the Code of Conduct for Judges and Magistrates. He contends that such conduct undermines judicial independence and erodes public trust in the judiciary.

The complainant confirmed to Citi News that the petition has been duly filed and acknowledged by the Presidency.

It remains unclear what immediate steps will be taken, but under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, the removal of a Justice of the Supreme Court must follow a strict process outlined in Article 146.

The politician is wanted in relation to five cases, including contractual arrangements between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), as well as procurement processes and financial transactions linked to the National Cathedral project.

In a video seen by YEN.com.gh on TikTok, Kevin Taylor shared a photo of Ken Ofori-Atta freely walking in the streets of the United States.

The controversial political commentator fumed that the former Data Bank co-founder remained free and laid the blame at the feet of President John Dramani Mahama.

“I blame the president, I blame this government, the OSP needs to be sacked. Mr President, I blame you for this. Because if Ken Ofori-Atta is still in America and you have somebody you have assigned to make sure Ken is brought back home to face the law, and it’s not happening, then you’re the one to be blamed,” he said.

Taylor added that the failure to apprehend Ofori-Atta should lead to the dismissal of the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyabeng.

“The OSP needs to be sacked. If the OSP stays in that office, then it means Mr President, you are not ready to help us fight corruption as you promised. It’s quite interesting that the OSP knows where Ken is [but has done nothing]. I don’t trust the OSP that much. I see him as someone using his office to protect criminals.” Taylor added.

Ghana Maritime Authority boss calls for visa waiver for seafarers

The Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Dr Kamal-Deen Ali, has raised concerns about the negative impact of visa restrictions on Ghanaian seafarers.

He explained that earlier visa restrictions imposed by the US government nearly brought Ghana’s maritime industry to a standstill.

Existing Ghanaian seafarers employed globally faced difficulties renewing contracts or extending employment, while newly trained seafarers also struggled to secure placements.

Fortunately, following diplomatic engagement, the US visa ban has since been lifted.

Dr Kamal-Deen Ali made these remarks during a courtesy call on the GMA by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Dorcas Afo Toffey.

Addressing new visa restrictions imposed by Brazil, he urged the government to engage Brazilian authorities to secure a waiver for Ghanaian seafarers.

He noted that although Ghana has not yet fully migrated to the new seafarer identification chip system, the existing seafarer book should continue to be recognised in the interim.

“We have written to the ministry regarding the Brazil issue, and we hope that Brazil will be engaged to grant us a waiver while we transition to the chip system. The aim is for our seafarers to eventually use the chip rather than the book, but this process will take some time,” he said.

He further cautioned that restrictions on seafarer cards in Brazil present serious challenges.

“In the cruise ship industry, about 60 to 70 percent of all cruise ships call at U.S. ports, while roughly 50 percent call at Brazilian ports. Without the proper entry requirements for seafarers, this becomes a significant challenge,” he explained.

Dr Kamal-Deen Ali also highlighted that nearly every ship calls at a US port at least once or several times per year, stressing the importance of smooth entry processes for Ghanaian seafarers.

The Deputy Minister of Transport, Dorcas Afo Toffey, commended the GMA for its work, particularly in training seafarers, and pledged her ministry’s support to address the Authority’s challenges, including congestion and space limitations.

Historic Yoruba Day celebration brings together leaders across Ghana and Nigeria

0

After weeks of consultations and stakeholder engagement, the maiden edition of Yoruba Day was held on Sunday, September 28, at the Accra International Conference Centre.

The cultural festival, designed to celebrate the rich Yoruba heritage in Ghana and foster unity among Nigerians living in the country, was organized under the guidance of Alhaji Babatunde Yahya Azeez, President of the Yoruba Community in Ghana and Baale Ambassador Oyeyemisola Fatuiyi, Chairman of the Yoruba Day 2025 Organizing Committee.

As promised, the event lived up to expectations, bringing together prominent Yoruba leaders from Ghana and Nigeria, including Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Moses Adeoye; His Royal Majesty Oba Alayeluwa Saheed Ademola Elegushi, Kusenla II; HRM Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi Esuwoye II, Olofa Of Ofa; Chief Musa Baba, Chief Olu Luther King, Professor Jeleel Olasunkanmi Ojuade, first Yoruba Professor of Dance in Nigeria and the Vice-Chancellor of Ojaja University; Alhaja Salawa Abeni, Alhaji Sidiku Buari, HRM Oba (Dr.) Samuel Adeoye JP, the Molokun of Atijere Kingdom in Ondo State; HRM Oba Elder Josiah Olanrewaju Aina, the Oloto of Awori Kingdom in Lagos State; Alhaja Sherifaah Mahama Dundu, sister of the sitting President of Ghana, and HRM Oba Abdul Rasheed Brimah, the President of the Yoruba Council of Obas and other Royal fathers in Ghana.

Under the theme “Celebrating the Beauty of Yoruba Culture, Excellence and Unity,” the festival showcased colourful aso-oke outfits, fila (traditional Yoruba caps), drumming, and fuji music that set the tone for a lively cultural display.

Delivering the opening address, Alhaji Babatunde Yahya Azeez, said the event was meant to celebrate Yoruba heritage while strengthening bonds among Yorubas in the country.

“Today, we are gathered not only to celebrate our heritage but also to reflect on the solid foundation laid for us by our fathers. We remember with pride the sacrifices of leaders such as Baba Musa, our former president, and other elders who, even before Ghana’s independence, worked tirelessly to establish the Yoruba community as a vibrant and integral part of this great nation. Their legacy of integrity, hard work, and loyalty remains a guiding light for us all.”

“Indeed, the history of our race is interwoven with Ghana’s own story. Yoruba descendants have made contributions in commerce, education, and leadership, and evidence of this can be seen in the proud heritage that continues to resonate in many Ghanaian families of Yoruba origin. This is a testimony that we are not just residents in Ghana, but true partners in its growth and territorial development.”

“On this occasion, I wish to publicly reaffirm the commitment of the Yoruba community to continue to live in peace with our Ghanaian brothers and sisters. We pledge to respect the culture and traditions of this land, and to promote peaceful coexistence for the progress of all.”

“To strengthen our bond and remind ourselves of our unique identity, I also wish to announce that this Yoruba Day celebration shall henceforth be held every two years, as a day of unity, reflection, and celebration of who we are as a people.”

Speaking on the sidelines, Fatuiyi explained that the gathering sought to foster excellence and unity among Yorubas across Ghana’s sixteen regions. Having lived in the country for 25 years, he said this was the first time he had seen leaders, chiefs, and members come together in one place to feast, strategize, and discuss the wellbeing of their children and future generations.

He stressed that beyond the colourful display, the highlight was the unity message. According to him, the leaders were not only preaching solidarity but also working to resolve “in-house issues” among traditional rulers. The focus, he said, was on peaceful coexistence, guiding their subjects, and ensuring Yorubas in Ghana remain law-abiding ambassadors of Nigeria.

Explaining the choice of theme, Fatuiyi pointed to history, noting that Yorubas had lived in Ghana for over 200 years yet had never held such a formal gathering. He said the time had come for the community to meet regularly, check in on one another, and remind the youth to be upright members of society.

He also stressed the need to balance identities, adding that while many Yorubas were born in Ghana, others migrated from Nigeria. “Blending into the Ghanaian system while upholding Yoruba values,” he said, was essential.

Looking ahead, Fatuiyi emphasized youth involvement to sustain the event. Traditions, he said, must be passed down or risk extinction. “Just as a bird flies with two wings,” he added, “our children must learn to balance their Nigerian roots with their Ghanaian identity.”

Nigeria’s Acting High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Moses Ifedayo Adeoye, also commended the Yoruba community for being law-abiding and responsible.

“As a Nigerian ambassador here, I have spent almost two years in Ghana, and I want to tell our fathers that came from Nigeria that the Yoruba communities we have here are highly, highly responsible people. Since my last two years here, the government of Ghana has never reported anyone from that community to my office. I think they deserve more kudos than that.

“The point I’m making is that the Yoruba communities in Ghana are good ambassadors, not only of the Yorubas, but also of Nigeria.”

The Yoruba’s have a long history in Ghana, with early migrants establishing trade networks by the late 19th century and contributing to commerce and culture. Later migrations were driven by economic and educational opportunities, establishing a significant contemporary Yoruba community in Ghana.

The Yoruba also have ancient historical ties to Ghana, as the Ga people are believed to have migrated from Yorubaland.
