Ghana’s Finance Minister between 2017 and 2024, Ofori-Atta, was declared wanted by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on June 2, 2025, and a Red Notice was issued for his arrest.

The politician is wanted in relation to five cases, including contractual arrangements between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), as well as procurement processes and financial transactions linked to the National Cathedral project.

Ken Ofori-Atta, who is currently residing in the United States, has challenged the arrest warrant issued against him.

Below is a Facebook post with details of Ofori-Atta’s legal battle against the OSP.

Kevin Taylor blasts OSP and Mahama

In a video seen by YEN.com.gh on TikTok, Kevin Taylor shared a photo of Ken Ofori-Atta freely walking in the streets of the United States.

The controversial political commentator fumed that the former Data Bank co-founder remained free and laid the blame at the feet of President John Dramani Mahama.

“I blame the president, I blame this government, the OSP needs to be sacked. Mr President, I blame you for this. Because if Ken Ofori-Atta is still in America and you have somebody you have assigned to make sure Ken is brought back home to face the law, and it’s not happening, then you’re the one to be blamed,” he said.

Taylor added that the failure to apprehend Ofori-Atta should lead to the dismissal of the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyabeng.

“The OSP needs to be sacked. If the OSP stays in that office, then it means Mr President, you are not ready to help us fight corruption as you promised. It’s quite interesting that the OSP knows where Ken is [but has done nothing]. I don’t trust the OSP that much. I see him as someone using his office to protect criminals.” Taylor added.

The TikTok video of Kevin Taylor is below.

Ghana Maritime Authority boss calls for visa waiver for seafarers

The Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Dr Kamal-Deen Ali, has raised concerns about the negative impact of visa restrictions on Ghanaian seafarers.

He explained that earlier visa restrictions imposed by the US government nearly brought Ghana’s maritime industry to a standstill.

Existing Ghanaian seafarers employed globally faced difficulties renewing contracts or extending employment, while newly trained seafarers also struggled to secure placements.

Fortunately, following diplomatic engagement, the US visa ban has since been lifted.

Dr Kamal-Deen Ali made these remarks during a courtesy call on the GMA by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Dorcas Afo Toffey.

Addressing new visa restrictions imposed by Brazil, he urged the government to engage Brazilian authorities to secure a waiver for Ghanaian seafarers.

He noted that although Ghana has not yet fully migrated to the new seafarer identification chip system, the existing seafarer book should continue to be recognised in the interim.

“We have written to the ministry regarding the Brazil issue, and we hope that Brazil will be engaged to grant us a waiver while we transition to the chip system. The aim is for our seafarers to eventually use the chip rather than the book, but this process will take some time,” he said.

He further cautioned that restrictions on seafarer cards in Brazil present serious challenges.

“In the cruise ship industry, about 60 to 70 percent of all cruise ships call at U.S. ports, while roughly 50 percent call at Brazilian ports. Without the proper entry requirements for seafarers, this becomes a significant challenge,” he explained.

Dr Kamal-Deen Ali also highlighted that nearly every ship calls at a US port at least once or several times per year, stressing the importance of smooth entry processes for Ghanaian seafarers.

The Deputy Minister of Transport, Dorcas Afo Toffey, commended the GMA for its work, particularly in training seafarers, and pledged her ministry’s support to address the Authority’s challenges, including congestion and space limitations.

Historic Yoruba Day celebration brings together leaders across Ghana and Nigeria

0

After weeks of consultations and stakeholder engagement, the maiden edition of Yoruba Day was held on Sunday, September 28, at the Accra International Conference Centre.

The cultural festival, designed to celebrate the rich Yoruba heritage in Ghana and foster unity among Nigerians living in the country, was organized under the guidance of Alhaji Babatunde Yahya Azeez, President of the Yoruba Community in Ghana and Baale Ambassador Oyeyemisola Fatuiyi, Chairman of the Yoruba Day 2025 Organizing Committee.

As promised, the event lived up to expectations, bringing together prominent Yoruba leaders from Ghana and Nigeria, including Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Moses Adeoye; His Royal Majesty Oba Alayeluwa Saheed Ademola Elegushi, Kusenla II; HRM Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi Esuwoye II, Olofa Of Ofa; Chief Musa Baba, Chief Olu Luther King, Professor Jeleel Olasunkanmi Ojuade, first Yoruba Professor of Dance in Nigeria and the Vice-Chancellor of Ojaja University; Alhaja Salawa Abeni, Alhaji Sidiku Buari, HRM Oba (Dr.) Samuel Adeoye JP, the Molokun of Atijere Kingdom in Ondo State; HRM Oba Elder Josiah Olanrewaju Aina, the Oloto of Awori Kingdom in Lagos State; Alhaja Sherifaah Mahama Dundu, sister of the sitting President of Ghana, and HRM Oba Abdul Rasheed Brimah, the President of the Yoruba Council of Obas and other Royal fathers in Ghana.

Under the theme “Celebrating the Beauty of Yoruba Culture, Excellence and Unity,” the festival showcased colourful aso-oke outfits, fila (traditional Yoruba caps), drumming, and fuji music that set the tone for a lively cultural display.

Delivering the opening address, Alhaji Babatunde Yahya Azeez, said the event was meant to celebrate Yoruba heritage while strengthening bonds among Yorubas in the country.

“Today, we are gathered not only to celebrate our heritage but also to reflect on the solid foundation laid for us by our fathers. We remember with pride the sacrifices of leaders such as Baba Musa, our former president, and other elders who, even before Ghana’s independence, worked tirelessly to establish the Yoruba community as a vibrant and integral part of this great nation. Their legacy of integrity, hard work, and loyalty remains a guiding light for us all.”

“Indeed, the history of our race is interwoven with Ghana’s own story. Yoruba descendants have made contributions in commerce, education, and leadership, and evidence of this can be seen in the proud heritage that continues to resonate in many Ghanaian families of Yoruba origin. This is a testimony that we are not just residents in Ghana, but true partners in its growth and territorial development.”

“On this occasion, I wish to publicly reaffirm the commitment of the Yoruba community to continue to live in peace with our Ghanaian brothers and sisters. We pledge to respect the culture and traditions of this land, and to promote peaceful coexistence for the progress of all.”

“To strengthen our bond and remind ourselves of our unique identity, I also wish to announce that this Yoruba Day celebration shall henceforth be held every two years, as a day of unity, reflection, and celebration of who we are as a people.”

Speaking on the sidelines, Fatuiyi explained that the gathering sought to foster excellence and unity among Yorubas across Ghana’s sixteen regions. Having lived in the country for 25 years, he said this was the first time he had seen leaders, chiefs, and members come together in one place to feast, strategize, and discuss the wellbeing of their children and future generations.

He stressed that beyond the colourful display, the highlight was the unity message. According to him, the leaders were not only preaching solidarity but also working to resolve “in-house issues” among traditional rulers. The focus, he said, was on peaceful coexistence, guiding their subjects, and ensuring Yorubas in Ghana remain law-abiding ambassadors of Nigeria.

Explaining the choice of theme, Fatuiyi pointed to history, noting that Yorubas had lived in Ghana for over 200 years yet had never held such a formal gathering. He said the time had come for the community to meet regularly, check in on one another, and remind the youth to be upright members of society.

He also stressed the need to balance identities, adding that while many Yorubas were born in Ghana, others migrated from Nigeria. “Blending into the Ghanaian system while upholding Yoruba values,” he said, was essential.

Looking ahead, Fatuiyi emphasized youth involvement to sustain the event. Traditions, he said, must be passed down or risk extinction. “Just as a bird flies with two wings,” he added, “our children must learn to balance their Nigerian roots with their Ghanaian identity.”

Nigeria’s Acting High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Moses Ifedayo Adeoye, also commended the Yoruba community for being law-abiding and responsible.

“As a Nigerian ambassador here, I have spent almost two years in Ghana, and I want to tell our fathers that came from Nigeria that the Yoruba communities we have here are highly, highly responsible people. Since my last two years here, the government of Ghana has never reported anyone from that community to my office. I think they deserve more kudos than that.

“The point I’m making is that the Yoruba communities in Ghana are good ambassadors, not only of the Yorubas, but also of Nigeria.”

The Yoruba’s have a long history in Ghana, with early migrants establishing trade networks by the late 19th century and contributing to commerce and culture. Later migrations were driven by economic and educational opportunities, establishing a significant contemporary Yoruba community in Ghana.

The Yoruba also have ancient historical ties to Ghana, as the Ga people are believed to have migrated from Yorubaland.

I Love Shatta Wale Than My Family – Adu Safowah

Adu Safowah. INSET: Shatta Wale

Ghanaian socialite, media personality, and actress Adu Safowah, known for her outspoken nature and involvement in controversies, has declared that her love for Dancehall artist, Shatta Wale, outweighs that of her own family.

Her public display of affection, which has sparked mixed reactions on social media, comes days after Shatta Wale’s star-studded performance at the Rapperholic Homecoming concert at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

Adu Safowah shared a photo of Shatta Wale on Instagram with the caption: “All I do is to pray for you, you will live long Shatta in good health. I love you than my own family members and they know #Iloveyou.”

Responding to a fan who questioned her declaration, she replied, “Listen to nobody bigger than God and you will understand my post better. His music keeps some of us going. Street crown oooo mine, I love Shatta.”

Her connection with Shatta Wale appears to stem from admiration rather than romance. She has previously described him as “the best” following his performance at the 2025 President’s Cup, praising his originality and impact on Ghana’s music industry.

NPP Presidential Primary: Some party members risk being disenfranchised

Charles Bissue is Director of Operations of Kennedy Agyapong’s Campaign Team Charles Bissue is Director of Operations of Kennedy Agyapong’s Campaign Team

Director of Operations of Kennedy Agyapong’s Campaign Team, Charles Bissue, has raised concerns over the registration of former party officers and qualified members ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Primary, scheduled for January 31, 2026.

Bawumia leads Kennedy Agyapong in central and other swing regions, poll shows

In a letter to the NPP Presidential Election Committee on October 1, 2025, Bissue noted that “Several eligible past officers have reported difficulties in completing their registration, primarily due to challenges in obtaining endorsements from constituency chairmen and secretaries. These issues risk disenfranchising qualified members who are entitled to participate in the process.”

He recalled that the party had provided both an online registration link and manual forms for eligible past officers and that “Although the registration deadline was initially set for September 19, 2025, it was extended to September 30, 2025 to accommodate members facing challenges.”

Timelines for NPP’s presidential primaries announced

To resolve the issues, Bissue proposed that “Coordinators of all presidential aspirants within the constituencies meet with constituency party officers to resolve discrepancies and ensure accurate registration. This step will help verify the number of registered members in each constituency before the final voter list is compiled at the national level.”

He added that this measure would enhance the credibility of the party’s voter register and safeguard the rights of all eligible members.

How can a Regional Chairman talk like this? – NPP General Secretary fires Abronye

0

Kodua Frimpong (L) has reacted to a claim by Abronye (R) that he blocked a report on Ken Agyapong. Kodua Frimpong (L) has reacted to a claim by Abronye (R) that he blocked a report on Ken Agyapong.

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has taken a swipe at the Bono Regional Chairman of the party, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, over allegations the latter made against him.

Speaking in an interview on Net2 TV on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, Kodua Frimpong refuted Abronye’s claim that he seized a report by the disciplinary committee of the party that recommended the sacking of Kennedy Agyapong, a flagbearer hopeful of the party.

“In 2023, when Ken Agyapong made his ‘showdown’ threat, I went to sit with him and told him what he did was wrong and took him to the disciplinary committee. When he went to the disciplinary committee, they spoke to him, and the recommendation they made was that they had cautioned him not to make such statements because he (Ken) was a leader of the party.

“Then Abronye goes to sit on TV and say, the recommendation given by the party was that he (Ken) should be removed from the party… and that the report was given to me and I have sat on it,” he said in the Twi dialect.

Justin Kodua refers Abronye DC to NPP disciplinary committee

The NPP General Secretary pointed out that Abronye, as a party leader, should not be making such comments.

He indicated that the actions of the Bono Regional Chairman constitute misconduct that he must be dealt with.

“How can a regional chairman sit down and say that the disciplinary committee has brought a report that says that a party leader should be sacked, while there is no such report? And you would also mention the name of the General Secretary, saying that I’m the one who is preventing the report from coming out.

“This is not mere disinformation; you are attacking a person. It is a direct attack because you mentioned the names of some people, and it is a breach of duty as a member of the party,” he said.

What Abronye said:

Abronye DC alleged that Frimpong was holding on to the 2023 Disciplinary Committee report concerning NPP flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong.

According to Abronye DC, the party’s disciplinary committee had prepared a report highlighting certain members whose actions, he claims, are harming the party.

“The 2023 disciplinary report recommends that Kennedy Agyapong should be sacked from the NPP because he is damaging the party and engaging in anti-party behaviour,” Abronye DC said.

Justin Kodua holding back on Kennedy Agyapong’s expulsion report – Abronye DC

He further alleged that Justin Kodua is protecting Agyapong, preventing the report from being acted upon.

“Justin Kodua is the one saving him. Assin Dompo, the destroyer who sold the NPP’s seat to A Plus… The report is with Justin Kodua, and he is sitting on it. He is the only person who knows why he is keeping it, and there will be a time when we will ask him about it.

“The party has structures, so why would he keep the report to himself instead of laying it before the national executives or council? The report detailed all of Agyapong’s anti-party conduct,” Abronye DC added.

GNPC deepens supplier partnerships, warns against tender pitfalls to strengthen local participation

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), has hosted its maiden Vendor Engagement Seminar, reaffirming it’s commitment to strengthening local content and participation in Ghana’s oil and gas industry.

The event which forms part of GNPC’s 40th anniversary celebrations, brought together Ghanaian businesses, vendors, and suppliers under the theme “Promoting Local Content and Local Participation through Vendor Engagement”.

The summit sought to strengthen supplier relationships, promote transparency, and foster deeper collaboration with stakeholders, while reaffirming GNPC’s commitment to efficient procurement, local content development, and sustainable supply chain partnerships.

Opening the session, Chief Executive Officer of GNPC, Kwame Ntow Amoah, emphasized the Corporation’s commitment to inclusive growth: “The theme of this engagement goes to the heart of GNPC’s mandate. For us, Local Content is not merely a regulatory requirement. It is central to our strategy to grow together with local enterprises in a mutually beneficial partnership, ensuring our nation’s resources create real opportunities for our people, businesses, and communities.”

During a technical presentation on tender best practices, Barbara Afriyie-Owusu of the Supply Chain and Local Content Development Department highlighted the pivotal role of compliance in contract processes, describing it as indispensable.

“Compliance is like oxygen—you don’t always notice it, but you cannot survive long without it. Keep your documents ready, make your submissions responsive, and credibility will follow. Trust me, the contract will come,” Afriyie-Owusu noted.

She cautioned against recurring pitfalls such as incomplete forms, missing pages, expired statutory certificates, late submissions, and incorrect file formats. With GNPC’s tender process now fully digital, she added that excuses like traffic delays or narrowly missed deadlines no longer hold, as the system automatically locks at closing time.

GNPC, Petroleum Commission sign joint framework to boost Voltaian Basin Project

Afriyie-Owusu also added that “It is a competition, and everyone wants to win. Paying attention to deadlines, technical specifications, and compliance requirements ensures fairness in the process. GNPC’s doors are open to all, but only those who meet the requirements will succeed.”

The summit also featured presentations from the Petroleum Commission, which outlined Ghana’s local content framework, and the Public Procurement Authority, which introduced the Ghana Electronic Procurement System (GHANEPS) to better equip vendors for efficient tender participation.

The Corporation encouraged businesses to see procurement not as a hurdle but as a pathway to building trust, expanding opportunities, and strengthening Ghanaian participation in the oil and gas sector.

Tidal Rave Festival Returns Nov. 14–15

0

The much-anticipated “Tidal Rave Festival” is set to take over the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel on November 14 and 15, promising an electrifying celebration of music, culture, and community.

Now in its 13th edition, the festival has grown into one of the country’s premier youth-driven experiences, built on strategic partnerships that continue to elevate both the event and the country’s creative industry.

Speaking at the official launch, the Event Director, Awo Ampadu Somuah, said this year marks a bold reimagining of the festival’s identity.

“Over the years, Tidal Rave has been known for delivering the ultimate rave experience. But this year, for the first time ever, the spotlight shifts to the Culture Currents, a carefully selected team of top industry specialists.”

The Culture Currents – comprising some of the nation’s most exciting creative voices, including Lisa Quama, Ato Sekyi, Rev Erskine, Samuella Graham, Ellen Osabutey, Makafui Awuku, Kojo Junior, and Joewackle – have been tasked with shaping the festival from within.

Their role is to bring diverse perspectives that reimagine what raving looks and feels like in 2025, weaving together fashion, food, culture, dance, storytelling, and sustainability into the two-day celebration.

“With fresh energy and fearless perspectives, the Culture Currents are ready to spark a wave that will ripple far beyond the coastline,” Mr. Ampadu noted.

This year’s festival also features a landmark two-year partnership with the Black Star Experience (BSE), an initiative under the Office of the President that seeks to promote Ghanaian tourism and the creative arts.

Explaining the collaboration, Rex Owusu Marfo, Presidential Staffer and Coordinator of the BSE, said the partnership was an investment in the country’s cultural future.

“We are not forcing young people to come to our museum; we are bringing the museum to their festival. We are creating living, breathing, pulsing cultural moments. This collaboration is a direct investment in our future, ensuring our culture not only survives but thrives for generations to come,” he said.

The CEO of EchoHouse Africa, Beryl Agyekum Ayaaba, curators of Tidal Rave, described the partnership as a powerful step forward.

“Tidal Rave has always been more than just an event; it is a platform to empower and showcase incredible Ghanaian talent. Partnering with the Black Star Experience is a strong affirmation of that mission and will help us project Ghana’s creative energy to the international stage, driving both cultural and economic value for the nation,” she said.

According to her, with music at its heart but culture at its core, this year’s Tidal Rave Festival promises not just a weekend of entertainment but a once-in-a-lifetime experience designed to leave lasting ripples across the country’s creative scene.

Ahanta West MCE, security agencies crack down on galamsey

0

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ahanta West, Ebenezer Aidoo, has called for stronger collective action against illegal mining, stressing its devastating impact on the environment and public health.

“Ghana’s water bodies and lands, which should serve as sources of drinking water, recreation, food security, and even energy generation, are gradually dying from the ravages of illegal mining activities through harmful chemical disposals,” Mr Aidoo warned.

He cited disturbing evidence of health hazards linked to galamsey, including reports of birth defects and findings that cocoyam leaves (Kontomire) from affected areas have become toxic.

“The ripple effect of galamsey is enormous. We must all come together to fight this devastating calamity,” the MCE stressed.

Mr Aidoo, together with officers from the National Security and the Ghana Police Service’s Formed Police Unit (FPU), led an operation in the Cape Three Points Forest that resulted in the arrest of seven individuals. The joint task force also destroyed more than ten “Chanfang” machines, commonly known as “one leg.”

Reaffirming his commitment to environmental protection and law enforcement, Mr Aidoo pledged that the Assembly would continue to pursue long-term strategies for sustainability and community safety.

Fuel Prices Up At Pumps

A  fuel station

More Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have increased fuel prices at the pumps this morning, September 30, 2025.

This comes almost two weeks after prices were expected to go up from mid-September in line with industry data.

Market leader Star Oil, in a social media post, announced that a litre of petrol will now sell at GH¢13.17, up from the previous GH¢12.77 on September 1.

The company explained that the adjustment was influenced by developments on the international market and the exchange rate, adding that, “As soon as market conditions improve, we will pass on any benefits to you as usual.”

Star Oil, however, maintained the price of diesel at GH¢13.45 per litre.

Shell, another major player, also adjusted its prices over the weekend. Diesel is now selling at GHC14.18 per litre, while petrol, which went up to GH¢13.59 on September 2, has been reduced slightly to GH¢13.44.

Meanwhile, some OMCs say they may not increase prices until October 2, citing competition as the reason for keeping prices unchanged during the second pricing window for September.

On September 23, 2025, GOIL, the second-largest player in the industry, raised the price of petrol to GH¢13.38 from GH¢12.99 on September 2.

Diesel also increased to GH¢14.20 per litre from GH¢13.90.

GOIL was the first to adjust prices after most OMCs kept theirs stable for about a week, despite projections of a 6% rise per litre from September 16.

Reasons

According to the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC), the increases are largely due to the depreciation of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar.

The cedi fell from GH¢11.20 to GH¢12.07 during the review period — a 7.76% drop — bringing its year-to-date loss to 14.02%, one of the steepest globally, according to Bloomberg.

“The decline is primarily due to strong demand for the dollar for imports ahead of the festive season,” COMAC explained.

On the global market, prices of crude oil and refined products actually dropped — petrol by 2.52%, diesel by 4.12%, and LPG by 2.69%.

However, COMAC stressed that the cedi’s depreciation has offset these declines, making domestic price increases unavoidable.

Sam George appears to have been contradicted by DStv again Sam George appears to have been contradicted by DStv again

MultiChoice Ghana Limited, managers of DStv, has once again contradicted the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, regarding the prices of its packages.

Sam George had announced that DStv subscribers in Ghana would enjoy between 33% and 50% more value on their subscriptions starting Wednesday, October 1, 2025, following an agreement between the Ministry and MultiChoice Africa.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, September 29, 2025, he stated that MultiChoice Africa had committed to rolling out an unprecedented value offer in Ghana, providing subscribers with between 33% and 50% more value depending on the package they use.

“MultiChoice Africa has committed to an unprecedented increase in value offer only in Ghana, which will result in Ghanaian DStv subscribers getting more services for less. Depending on the DStv package or bouquet you use, subscribers will get between 33% to 50% more value,” he remarked.

MultiChoice shoots down Sam George’s claim of DStv price slash

Following the minister’s announcement, a statement attributed to MultiChoice, widely reported by several media outlets, contradicted Sam George’s claims about enhanced DStv packages.

According to posts circulating on social media, MultiChoice said the enhanced packages are part of a promotion scheduled to end in December 2025.

“New DStv package upgrades announced by Sam George are a promotion scheduled to end in December 2025… – MultiChoice Africa,” the company shared on Wednesday.

On September 5, 2025, MultiChoice had denied agreeing to a price reduction in DStv services after Sam George announced that a deal had been reached to that effect.

Why TEWU has suspended its strike action

0

The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has suspended its indefinite strike which started on September 19, 2025, following constructive engagements with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and employer institutions.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, TEWU said the move is to allow for further discussions and the implementation of agreed terms.

Why TEWU has directed non-teaching staff to ‘stay home’ from September 18

“On Monday September 29, 2025, TEWU Leadership held a meeting with FWSC and employer institutions. After a very constructive dialogue, the parties resolved to work towards an amicable solution to the concerns of Union. We are expected to meet FWSC on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, to proceed with negotiations, conclude and sign the various Conditions of Service of the affected institutions and TEWU of TUC membership. This forms part of the agreed issues with the FWSC during the engagement,” it said.

TEWU urged its members to return to work on Thursday, October 2, 2025.

“All TEWU members in the aforementioned institutions are expected to resume work by Thursday, October 2, 2025. All those who might have travelled outside their jurisdiction should report not later than Monday, October 6, 2025.

TEWU declares indefinite strike effective September 19

The strike, involving members across the Ghana Education Service, Public and Technical Universities, the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, and the Ghana Library Authority, was aimed at accelerating the conclusion of negotiations and the signing of various Conditions of Service for its members.

Read the full statement below:

SUSPENSION OF TEWU of TUC STRIKE ACTIONS

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Media,

Thank you for joining us today. The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of TUC (Ghana) embarked on an indefinite strike on 19th September 2025. Our members, including workers within the Ghana Education Service, Public and Technical Universities, staff of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, and the Ghana Library Authority, took this action to demand the conclusion of

negotiation and signing of various Conditions of Service.

Our legal strike, which has gone on for almost two weeks and very impactful, drew significant attention and engagement from the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Jobs, National Labour Commission and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) with positive outcomes.

On Monday September 29, 2025, TEWU Leadership held a meeting with FWSC and employer institutions. This forms part of the agreed issues with the FWSC during the engagement.

Our friends from the media, and our cherished members, as a result of this positive development, TEWU has decided to SUSPEND the indefinite strike action, with effect from today Wednesday October 1, 2025, to allow for further discussions and implementation of the agreed terms.

All TEWU members in the aforementioned institutions are expected to resume work by Thursday, October 2, 2025. All those who might have travelled outside their jurisdiction should report not later than Monday October 6, 2025.

We emphasize that this is a SUSPENSION and not a called-off of the strike. We hope the FWSC and employer institutions will honour their side of the agreement, so that TEWU is not be forced to do otherwise.

We also reiterate that no TEWU member or non-teaching staff should be victimized for exercising their right to strike. The union leadership will defend any member facing victimization and unfair labour practices from their employer on this matter now or in the future. We, however, appreciate all Managements and School Heads, who have been cooperative and supportive by allowing us press home our demands without frustration and intimidation so far.

We recognize their consciousness for delivering quality education service in Ghana and for accepting our collective struggle during this period.

TEWU shall remain a law-abiding union and will continue to pursue better conditions for our members. We acknowledge all our members; the National Executive Council, Management Committee, Regional Officers and their Councils, Local and District Executives, the Women and Youth Structures, all Association Executives within the Ghana Education Service, as well as our gallant Local Executives in the Public and Technical Universities, Ghana Library Authority, Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, our monitoring and the Task Force Team for their resolute support throughout the nine days of the strike.

We thank the media for the support and the needed attention in getting our message across. We know our efforts have not been in vain. There is power in our collective action.

Long live TEWU of the Trades Union Congress!

Long live Ghana!

Thank you for your attention.

Guide Radio’s ‘Beer & Grillz’ Ignites East Legon Nightlife

0

A scene from the Beer & Grillz

East Legon’s A&C Corner turned into a hub of music, laughter, and sizzling grills on Sunday as Guide Radio’s much-anticipated Beer & Grillz event delivered a night to remember.

What was billed as a casual weekend hangout quickly transformed into a full-blown festival of sound, flavour, and celebration.

From the moment the grills fired up, the air buzzed with excitement. Guests were treated to an irresistible blend of free-flowing beer and mouthwatering cuts of meat, which many enthusiastically grilled themselves as part of the interactive theme.

The do-it-yourself barbecue vibe, paired with endless drinks, set the stage for an atmosphere that felt like the ultimate backyard party, intimate yet electrifying.

The music, however, was the true showstopper. Rising twin sensations Lali and Lola lit up the stage with a high-energy set that had the crowd singing along and dancing without pause.

Just when the energy seemed at its peak, highlife star Molly raised it another notch with her powerhouse performance. Her hit Shake It to the Max brought the entire venue to its feet, creating a euphoric wave of movement and joy.

Adding to the spectacle was the strong presence of Guide Radio’s own community, including its popular salsa teams, who dazzled the audience with their polished moves and infectious energy.

By the end of the night, it was clear that Beer & Grillz had surpassed expectations. More than just a party, it became a celebration of music, food, and community that set a new benchmark for Sunday nightlife in Accra.

As the last song faded and the grills cooled, one question lingered in the minds of attendees: where will Guide Radio take the next Beer & Grillz?

Over 500 Ashanti NPP youth endorse Bryan Acheampong as NPP’s 2028 flagbearer

0

More than 500 young members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region have declared their support for Dr Bryan Acheampong as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

The endorsement was announced at a press conference in Kumasi, described by organisers as the “political nerve centre” of Ghana and the stronghold of the NPP tradition. The event brought together 20 constituency youth organisers, regional executives, constituency leaders, polling station workers, and hundreds of party faithful.

Speaking on behalf of the youth, the conveners said Dr Acheampong represents the temperament and conciliatory spirit needed to prevent post-election divisions within the party.

“Already, emerging rivalries among aspirants portend a perilous path toward fragmentation if not carefully managed,” they noted. “But in the towering figure of Dr Bryan Acheampong, we discern the only candidate who can mend divisions, heal wounds, and forge a unified party machinery.”

The group highlighted several of Dr Acheampong’s achievements, including:

Launch of Planting for Food and Jobs Phase II (PFJ 2.0) with a comprehensive value-chain credit system for farmers.

Expansion of irrigation projects to promote all-year farming and food security.

Reforms at COCOBOD that improved cocoa pricing and protected farmers’ livelihoods.

Chairmanship of the Côte d’Ivoire–Ghana Cocoa Initiative, strengthening Ghana’s role in global cocoa negotiations.

Support for rural livelihoods under the ESRF programme during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The youth also cited his contributions to education and skills development, pointing to scholarships, vocational training, and school infrastructure. In his Abetifi constituency, they noted interventions such as boreholes, health programmes, NHIS enrolment, and entrepreneurial support.

They further referenced his business ventures, particularly the Rock City Hotel in Kwahu-Nkwatia, described as one of Africa’s largest hospitality projects, which has created jobs and boosted local businesses across the hospitality value chain.

Framing their endorsement as a call to action for NPP delegates nationwide, the youth stated: “We require a leader with competence to govern, charisma to inspire, discipline to instil confidence, delivery to proven credibility, and neutrality to unify the party after internal contests. That leader is Bryan Acheampong.”

The endorsement concluded with strong symbolism, positioning Dr Acheampong as “the architect of unity, the custodian of youth empowerment, and the steward of agricultural transformation.”

As chants echoed through Kumasi, the group declared their rallying cry: “Bryan Acheampong for Flagbearer 2028 – The Unifier, The Visionary, The Deliverer.”

Cedi Hits GH¢13.50 To Dollar

0

The depreciation of the Ghana cedi eased over the past two weeks, with the interbank and retail markets recording modest dips.

In the interbank market, the US Dollar cedi pair closed the fortnight at GH¢12.40 from GH¢12.15, marking a 2.02% dip compared to 6.17% recorded two weeks earlier.

In the retail market, the cedi remained range-bound between GH¢13.40 and GH¢13.50 against the US dollar, posting a 0.74% decline from 6.72%. In parallel, the pound and euro closed at midrates of GH¢18.05 (-2.49%) and GH¢15.70 (-1.59%) from GH¢17.60 and GH¢15.70, respectively.

“We note that the slowdown in the cedi’s depreciation confirms our earlier expectations of stability, supported by stronger FX [foreign exchange] inflows and softer market sentiments. Looking ahead, we maintain a cautiously optimistic near-term outlook, with seasonal FX inflows from commodity exports expected to filter through”, Databank Researchers said.

It acknowledged that heightened corporate demand, particularly from the services sector ahead of the festive season, may create upside risk.

However, it said sustained forex support from the Bank of Ghana, underpinned by a strong reserve buffer and positive expectations around the International Monetary Fund’s fifth programme review to anchor its outlook is expected.

It further noted that, the ongoing U.S. budget stalemate could sustain dollar softness, providing further support to the USD/GHS pair.

This is not the leadership we voted for – Prof. Bokpin slams gov’t

0

Economist and professor at the University of Ghana, Godfred Bokpin, has expressed deep frustration over what he describes as the failure of the current leadership to meet the expectations of Ghanaians in the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Prof Bokpin criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership for not taking decisive action to curb galamsey, and for failing to drive initiatives that could strengthen the economy.

“I take a different view of the fact that if we continue on this path simply because some four million people are engaged in that sector (mining), and we are gaining foreign exchange is cheap. For me, this is not the kind of leadership we voted for,” he said.

He argued that mining is underperforming compared to other sectors of the economy and failing to deliver its full potential to national revenue.

“If you put all the sectors of the economy together and look at sectoral analysis and their contributions to revenue generation, you will come to oil and gas, which is contributing around 22.3% to the total revenue. Then you come to mining, which is delivering close to 12%, which is very low,” Prof. Bokpin explained.

He stressed that this was far from what Ghanaians expected before giving the NDC leadership the mandate, warning that the environmental destruction caused by galamsey demands urgent and bold interventions.

MTN Ghana set to introduce specialised gaming packages to boost Ghana’s eSports industry

0

Manager for Video and Gaming at MTN Ghana, Yaw Antwi Boadu, has revealed that the company is considering specialised gaming data packages to reduce costs for players and encourage wider participation.

Speaking at the MTN DigiFest 2025 Gaming Focus Group and Closing Session held at the company’s head office, he underscored the crucial role of reliable internet in the gaming ecosystem.

“We are the backbone and without the internet, our customers will not be able to take advantage of eSports. So the next level will be having specialised packages for the gaming society to be able to take advantage of that. It’s something that we will consider internally and meet them in the area that they expect us to be,” he said.

Mr Boadu also stated MTN’s long-term vision for the industry, noting that while others may not yet see its potential, MTN is committed to investing.

“I think maybe the market is not seeing into the future where eSports is going as MTN does. We see the value that we will be able to generate and also the value that we will generate for the community. We are willing to step out to work with the eSports community to ensure that is achieved,” he explained.

He added that some businesses remain hesitant because they focus solely on short-term profit.

“Maybe they are also not seeing the value that eSports brings or presents. For businesses, we look at the bottom line… But for us at MTN, even before they speak to us, we’ve seen ahead, we’ve seen where eSports is going, and we want to be part of it. We don’t need to be convinced to even support the community,” he stated.

On his part, the CEO of the eSports Academy and Vice President of the eSports Association, Maximus Ametorgoh, called for a national eSports policy to guide the industry.

He said the National Sports Authority was now working on one, but more detail was needed.

“In Ghana, we don’t have an eSports plan or policy. The NSA is now working on it. We are also trying to support them in developing an eSports policy for the country. eSports is unique because of its interdisciplinary nature, education, entertainment, and the sport itself. So we need a very detailed policy,” he said.

He pointed to global examples such as Saudi Arabia, which is using gaming to boost tourism and attract investment.

“You have a case study to look out for. You can go there and copy what they have or partner with them and then see how we can also develop our local market,” he advised.

He also corrected the misconceptions about gaming, clarifying that gaming is different from betting.

“For eSports, you don’t pay to win. You have to play the game yourself to be able to win. If you don’t have the skills, you will not win it. This is the electronic version of the traditional games we play. You can be the Chelsea player on the field using your controller,” he explained.

Figures shared at the event showed the scale of Ghana’s gaming industry. Out of a population of 34.7 million, more than 24 million are internet users and 8.8 million engage with gaming platforms. The country already has over one million console owners.

Gaming has now overtaken video-on-demand, e-publishing, and music as Ghana’s leading digital media expenditure. Globally, video games are projected to surpass $500 billion in revenue by 2030, outpacing both movies and music combined.

“The gaming industry is multidisciplinary, and everyone can find a role, from developers, coders, and animators to sound designers, commentators, journalists, content creators, and even cosplayers. This is not just about entertainment. It is about positioning Ghana in a multi-billion-dollar global industry that can generate jobs, nurture talent, and drive innovation,” Mr Ametorgoh said.

President of the eSports Association of Ghana, Kwesi Hayford, emphasised the high cost of data, gaming equipment, and software updates.

“Imagine buying a game for $100 and still having to spend extra on massive updates, sometimes as large as 60GB. We need support from partners like MTN to negotiate with PlayStation and Xbox, and even offer off-peak data packages,” he said.

He also called on gamers to professionalise by forming registered teams, noting that “this is what allows access to sponsorships, scholarships and international tournaments.”

The General Secretary of the Association and Team Manager of PlayProvince, Dabi Diamond, shared her journey from semi-professional gamer to administrator.

She said more women were now entering the industry, not just as players but as managers, organisers, and media professionals.

“Beyond players and tournaments, there’s an entire ecosystem of organisers, shoutcasters, and production teams. Thankfully, many individuals who began as gamers are now stepping into crucial roles behind the scenes,” she said.

She added that this trend is helping diversify the industry while creating new opportunities for women within Ghana’s digital economy.

Deported from the US to Ghana then ‘dumped’ at the Border: Nigerian man speaks out

0

Togo's capital city, Lomé, is near the Ghanaian border Togo’s capital city, Lomé, is near the Ghanaian border

A Nigerian man deported from the US to Ghana has told the BBC that he is now stuck in a hotel in Togo, after he and five others were secretly transferred to the neighbouring country by Ghanaian officers.

The man said they were informed they would be moved from a military camp to better accommodation, but were then “dumped” in Togo. The BBC has approached Ghana’s government for comment.

The US government deported the Nigerian man – along with other West African nationals – as part of its crackdown on immigration.

Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa previously said the government had accepted the deportees in the spirit of “pan-African empathy”.

The Nigerian, who has requested anonymity for safety reasons, alleged that Ghanaian officers took him and the five other deportees into Togo through a back route. He further claimed that this was done after bribing local police, and without informing Togolese authorities of their entry.

“They did not take us through the main border, they took us through the back door. They paid the police there and dropped us in Togo,” he said.

The Togolese authorities have not commented on the alleged presence of the deportees on their territory.

Four of the group – three Nigerians and a Liberian – then checked into a hotel in Lomé, the Togolese capital, which lies just across the border from where they were abandoned.

With no documents of their own, he said they relied on the hotel staff to receive money from relatives abroad to cover their bills.

“We’re struggling to survive in Togo without any documentation,” he said.

“None of us has family in Togo. We’re just stuck in a hotel,” he added. “Right now, we’re just trying to survive until our lawyers can help us with this situation.”

He said that while in Ghana they had been asking for better living conditions since the environment at the military camp where they were placed was “deplorable”.

“Life there was really hard, so we asked for a better place, better medication, better healthcare and better water,” the Nigerian told the BBC.

He said that days later, immigration officials arrived at the camp, saying they were taking six of them to a hotel for more comfort, but they ended up across the border in Togo.

“When we arrived, we asked what we were doing at the border, and they told us they wanted us to sign some paperwork so they could take us to a hotel, but we didn’t sign anything,” he added.

The Nigerian told the BBC that the language barrier in Togo made it difficult to communicate. Togo’s official language is French, while he spoke English.

He also said that his deportation had affected his family in the US.

“I have a house in the US where my kids live. How am I supposed to pay the mortgage? I don’t know how they’ll manage while I’m gone. My kids can’t see me, and it’s just so stressful,” he lamented.

He said he was a member of the Yoruba Self-Determination Movement, an activist organisation advocating for a breakaway state in south-west Nigeria for the Yoruba ethnic group.

Although the movement is not banned, it has been in the crosshairs of the Nigerian government, with 27 people arrested last year for being involved in its campaign.

Because of his affiliation with the group, the man told the BBC he fears that returning to Nigeria could lead to his arrest and torture. The Nigerian deportee said he was under a US court-ordered protection that should have shielded him from deportation from the US.

The US has not given the reason for his deportation.

The Nigerian was part of a group of West Africans deported to Ghana last month, which also included nationals of Togo, Liberia and The Gambia.

They had previously been held in a US detention facility before being flown out on a US military plane in shackles, their lawyers said.

The US government’s “third-country deportation” policy has faced criticism, with several countries pushing back against the strategy, including Nigeria.

The deal for Ghana to take in nationals from various West African countries was announced by President John Mahama three weeks ago. He said he had been approached by the US to accept the deportees, and had agreed because there was free movement of people in West Africa.

Foreign Minister Ablakwa has since said Ghana received no financial reward for accepting the deportees.

Opposition MPs have demanded an immediate suspension of the deportation agreement until it is ratified by parliament, but the government has said it plans to accept another 40 deportees.

Lawyers for the deportees have started legal action against both the US and the Ghanaian governments, saying their rights were violated.

Here’s what is affected by the government shutdown

0

The federal government has shut down as congressional lawmakers remain at odds over funding the government beyond September 30.

Although Republicans control Capitol Hill and the White House, they need at least seven Democrats in the Senate to join them to pass a spending package under the chamber’s rules.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, however, is demanding any funding bill contain an extension of the enhanced Affordable Care Act premium subsidies, along with several other items, to get his party’s support. GOP leaders want an extension of funding for seven weeks, with additional money for security for the legislative, executive and judicial branches.

With the impasse unresolved, the government shutdown could be unlike any other in recent memory. While no two shutdowns are exactly the same, President Donald Trump and the White House Office of Management and Budget have already signaled that they are willing to use a totally different playbook — urging agencies to downsize workers in programs whose funding has lapsed and which don’t align with Trump’s priorities.

OMB Director Russell Vought on Tuesday said the government can cut jobs and programs, rather than just furlough workers during a shutdown.

“We have the authority to make permanent change to the bureaucracy here in government,” Vought said on Fox Business.

Trump is no stranger to government shutdowns. The most recent one occurred during his first term, starting in late December 2018 and lasting 35 days, the longest on record.

Here’s what we know about the government shutdown:

What is a government shutdown?

Congress must provide funding for many federal departments and functions every fiscal year, which begins on October 1. If lawmakers fail to pass a spending package for the full year or extend funding for a shorter period, known as a continuing resolution, then many agencies and activities must shutter until Congress appropriates more money.

Since lawmakers have yet to pass through both chambers any of the 12 appropriations bills that make up the federal discretionary spending budget, this government shutdown will be considered a full shutdown.

During prior impasses, Congress approved annual funding for certain agencies, which allowed them to continue operating while other federal departments went dark. That situation is known as a partial shutdown.

Since 1980, there have been 14 government shutdowns, not counting the current impasse, according to the Bipartisan Policy Center.

What is the shutdown deadline?

The shutdown began on October 1, first thing Wednesday morning, since Congress did not act before that.

What programs and payments will stop?

Every government shutdown differs somewhat, but typically functions that are critical to the protection of lives and property are deemed essential and remain open. Agencies file what are known as contingency plans that detail what operations will continue and how many employees will remain on the job, many of them without pay.

However, in an unusual move, OMB this time is not posting agencies’ shutdown contingency plans on its website. Instead, the plans are hosted only on each agency’s site — making it harder to assess how the Trump administration will handle the shutdown and which activities it will deem essential.

The US Food and Drug Administration’s ability to provide public health oversight will be harmed in a shutdown, according to an updated Department of Health and Human Services’ contingency plan. The agency will be limited in the inspections it can conduct, though it will still respond to emergencies.

“In the event of a lapse in appropriations, FDA’s ability to protect and promote public health and safety would be significantly impacted, with many activities delayed or paused,” the plan said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Education said it will furlough most of its staffers in a shutdown, though it will continue to dole out Pell Grants and federal student loans and keep making Title I and IDEA grant funding available. States, schools and others can still access the billions of dollars in awards the department made over the summer.

On the other hand, most Department of Homeland Security personnel will continue working. Most employees in Customs and Border Patrol will be retained, as well as those who work for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Transportation Security Administration, the Secret Service, Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Previous shutdowns canceled immigration hearings; and delayed some federal lending to homebuyers and small businesses, among other impacts.

In the most recent prior shutdown, students had trouble getting needed tax documents from the Internal Revenue Service to get financial aid for the spring semester, and the US Department of Agriculture warned that it could only guarantee to provide food stamp benefits through February.

Some government functions can continue – at least for a certain period of time – if they are funded through fees or other types of appropriations. For instance, the Internal Revenue Service said it can use some of the funding it received from the Inflation Reduction Act to keep all of its roughly 74,300 staffers on the job — as it said it would do previously when shutdowns loomed. The IRS is currently in the midst of putting into place dozens of tax law changes contained in the Republicans’ One Big Beautiful Bill Act, including some that take effect this year.

It’s likely that immigration, border patrol and defense activities funded through the GOP’s tax and spending package, which Trump signed into law in July, will continue.

“Thankfully, H.R. 1 provided ample resources to ensure that many core Trump Administration priorities will continue uninterrupted,” OMB wrote in its memo to agencies about preparing mass layoff plans, referring to the president’s domestic agenda package.

The Defense Department said in its contingency plan that it considers its highest priorities to be securing the southern border, Middle East operations, the Golden Dome missile defense system, among others.

Agencies and administrations have some amount of choice in which services they deem essential, said Molly Reynolds, interim director of the governance studies program at the Brookings Institution.

In Trump’s first term, Reynolds noted that the administration took some measures to make the shutdown less painful, such as allowing the IRS to process tax refunds — a departure from prior shutdowns.

But that may not be the case this year.

“The OMB memo threatening wide-scale federal layoffs if there is a shutdown suggests that this time around, they might be looking to make the shutdown more painful,” she said.

Will Social Security be affected?

Social Security payments to senior citizens, people with disabilities and other Americans will not be interrupted, according to the Social Security Administration’s updated contingency plan.

“In the event of a lapse in appropriation, SSA will follow the contingency plan for continued activities, and Social Security beneficiaries would continue receiving their Social Security, Social Security Disability Insurance and SSI (Supplemental Security Income) payments,” the agency told CNN.

Also, the unemployed will continue to receive their jobless benefits, as long as state agencies have administrative funding to process them, according to the Department of Labor.

Medicare and Medicaid payments will also continue to be distributed, the Department of Health and Human Services said in its contingency plan.

Will national parks stay open?

The impact of shutdowns on the 400-plus national park sites has differed greatly in recent shutdowns.

In 2013, an estimated 8 million recreation visits and $414 million were lost during the 16-day shutdown, according to the National Parks Conservation Association, citing National Park Service data. During the most recent shutdown in 2019, many parks remained open though no visitor services were provided. The Park Service lost $400,000 a day from missed entrance fee revenue, according to the association’s estimates. What’s more, park visitors would have typically spent $20 million on an average January day in nearby communities.

States have also stepped in to keep some national parks open using their own funds. When a shutdown loomed in the fall of 2023, Utah said it would keep the Mighty 5 parks – Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef and Zion – open, while Arizona planned to keep the Grand Canyon operational. Colorado also said it would also keep its four national parks and other federal lands open.

What’s the impact on airline travel?

Air traffic controllers and Transportation Security Administration officers are typically deemed essential and must remain on the job, though they are not paid. But staffing shortages during past shutdowns have snarled flights.

Critical support staff would be furloughed and vital support programs would be suspended in a shutdown, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association said in a statement. That would make it more difficult for air traffic controllers and other aviation safety workers to operate at full capability.

“In a time when aviation safety is under heightened public concern, a government shutdown would significantly add to the distractions our members must manage on the job every day,” Nick Daniels, the union’s president, said.

The decision by 10 air traffic controllers to stay home in January 2019 helped end that shutdown. Their absence temporarily shut down travel at New York’s LaGuardia airport and caused delays at other major hubs, including in New Jersey, Philadelphia and Atlanta, driving Trump to agree to a temporary government funding measure.

How about the impact on federal workers?

Federal workers bear the brunt of government shutdowns. Some are furloughed, while others are considered essential and have to continue working. But many don’t get paid until the impasse ends — though they may not feel an immediate impact since many won’t receive their pay for October until later in the month.

In March, the last time a federal government shutdown loomed before being averted, more than 1.4 million employees were deemed essential, according to Rachel Snyderman, managing director of economic policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center. About 750,000 of them would have continued to be paid since their salaries were funded through other sources.

Another nearly 900,000 workers would have been furloughed without pay. (Snyderman noted that the estimates did not include the layoffs and departures that occurred in the early weeks of the Trump administration.)

The Defense Department informed active duty and reserve military members, as well as civilian employees, in late September that they will not be paid after September 30 until Congress approves funding for the agency, according to a memo viewed by CNN. Active duty members will have to continue to report for work.

Also, judiciary officials warned in late September that federal courts could be affected by a shutdown within days, much sooner than in previous occurrences, because of tight budgets. While judges and Supreme Court justices would continue to be paid, many other judicial employees would not.

Federal workers are guaranteed to receive their back pay after the impasse is resolved. However, the same is not true for federal contractors who may be furloughed or temporarily laid off by their employers during a shutdown.

Will services for veterans be affected?

Medical care and critical services for veterans will not be interrupted during a government shutdown, the Department of Veterans Affairs said in its contingency plan. This includes suicide prevention programs, homelessness programs, the Veterans Crisis Line and caregiver support.

The agency will also keep processing and paying claims for education benefits, disability compensation and pensions, as well as loan guarantee programs. And its National Cemetery Administration will continue to inter veterans and eligible family members.

However, certain functions will cease until the impasse ends. The GI Bill Hotline will be suspended, as will assistance programs to help service members shift to civilian life. Also, the permanent installation of headstone and cemetery grounds maintenance will not occur until the shutdown is over.

What does a shutdown do to the economy?

Shutdowns can have real consequences for the economy since federal spending is delayed, and many federal workers pull back on their purchases while they aren’t receiving paychecks.

The five-week shutdown in 2018-2019 resulted in a $3 billion loss in economic growth that would not be recovered, according to a Congressional Budget Office estimate. It noted that some private sector businesses would never make up their lost income.

Also, because the IRS reduced its compliance activities during the shutdown, CBO estimated that tax revenues would be roughly $2 billion lower — much of which would not be recouped.

What’s more, it would become difficult to determine the health of the economy — which is currently in flux — during a shutdown. The Bureau of Labor Statistics will not issue any economic reports, including the closely watched monthly jobs report on October 3, during the shutdown, the Department of Labor said in its updated shutdown plan.

The impact stretches beyond the federal government.

The US Travel Association wrote a letter to congressional leaders in late September urging them to avoid a shutdown, which it said would result in flight delays, longer airport security lines and canceled trips.

“A shutdown is a wholly preventable blow to America’s travel economy — costing $1 billion every week — and affecting millions of travelers and businesses while placing unnecessary strain on an already overextended federal travel workforce,” wrote Geoff Freeman, the association’s CEO. “The consequences of inaction and immediate and severe.”

Romance scam: ‘We’ll hand you over to be tried and punished’

President John Dramani Mahama has issued a stern warning that anyone involved in romance scams, whether targeting Ghanaians or foreign nationals, will be extradited and prosecuted.

Speaking at the launch of Cyber Security Awareness Month in Accra on Wednesday, October 1, the President said Ghana is working closely with international partners to clamp down on online fraud. He noted that evidence gathered on perpetrators will be acted upon decisively.

“We’ve been collaborating with our international partners. When evidence is gathered and it is proven that people are involved in romance scams, using our extradition treaties, we ship the culprits back,” President Mahama stated.

He explained that Ghana will rely on existing extradition treaties to ensure that suspects are returned to jurisdictions where they will stand trial.

“So we will continue to collaborate with all our global partners, anybody involved in romance scams, whether you are a foreigner or a Ghanaian citizen we will hand yo over to be tried and punished accordingly,” he stressed.

President Mahama maintained that this is important to protect both Ghanaian citizens and the country’s international reputation.

‘It will be a different Ghana’ – Prosper Ogum on rematch against Cote d’Ivoire in WAFU B final

0

Black Starlets head coach Prosper Ogum Narteh believes fans will see a different Ghana team when they play Cote d’Ivoire in the final of the ongoing WAFU B U-17 Cup of Nations.

The game will be a repeat of the second round of group stage fixtures when the Black Starlets lost 3-0 to the host country at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium.

Ghana beat Nigeria to book a place in the final two on Tuesday evening, while Cote d’Ivoire also eased past Burkina Faso in the other semifinal clash earlier in the day.

Asked what he would do differently in the game against Cote d’Ivoire, Ogum said his side will need to approach the game differently from their style in the first meeting.

“It will be a different Ghana; our structure will be different, our mentality and our character will also be different. They defeated us in the group stage,” he said after the win over Nigeria.

“Fortunately, we have been able to play them so we know what to do, go back and prepare ourselves in terms of our mentality and character and how we need to stay focused on the field.

“Tactically, we also have to re-strategise to make sure that we meet them boot for boot.”

A place in the final also means Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire both seal the available tickets to represent WAFU B at next year’s U-17 Africa Cup of Nations tournament to be staged in Morocco.

FGBMFI Ghana to host first-ever international convention in October

0

The Ghana branch of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International (FGBMFI) will in October 2025 host a landmark convention that blends spiritual renewal with business networking.

The 2025 National Convention, scheduled for October 9 to 11 at the Palms Convention Centre of La Palm Beach Resort in Accra, will for the first time bring together delegates from across West Africa, Christian business executives, public servants, and professionals from Nigeria, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and other countries are expected to attend.

Since its incorporation in Ghana in 1984, the convention has been an annual national spiritual gathering. This year, however, organizers are taking it a step further by opening it up to international participation.

At a press conference in Accra, the National President of FGBMFI Ghana, Emmanuel Baba Mahama, said the 2025 convention would combine worship, teaching, and entrepreneurship.

“Attendees will engage in a unique fusion of worship sessions, keynote sermons, and business workshops designed to foster both spiritual growth and economic development,” he noted.

In addition to the spiritual programmes, the Fellowship’s Corporate Business Development Directorate will hold a networking session, offering Christian entrepreneurs a platform to connect and explore solutions to common challenges such as access to capital, market expansion, and maintaining integrity in competitive markets.

Founded globally in 1951, the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International describes itself as the world’s largest Christian business network, with more than 7,000 chapters in over 100 nations. Its Ghana branch, first launched in 1977 and incorporated in 1984, has become a platform for professionals across denominations to promote Christian values in business, communities, and homes.

Once restricted to men, the Fellowship now includes women, who participate under the banner of Ladies of the Fellowship.

Organizers say the 2025 convention will not only celebrate the Fellowship’s growth but also highlight how faith and commerce can work together to impact society.

Ken Ofori-Atta spotted in the US?

0

The picture of Ken Ofori-Atta and his wife which has gone viral The picture of Ken Ofori-Atta and his wife which has gone viral

It has been months since former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, was declared a fugitive wanted for a number of crimes by the Office of the Special Prosecutor and placed on the INTERPOL Red Alert Notice database.

Despite the search for Ofori-Atta by the 196 nations that are part of INTERPOL, including the United States and the United Kingdom, where he is believed to have been sighted since leaving Ghana, the former finance minister is still at large.

Several reports have indicated that Ofori-Atta is now in the United States (US), where he is receiving some medical treatment.

The reports also suggest that the US government has concluded that the investigation against him by Ghana’s security agencies does not amount to witch-hunting and has agreed to return him to Ghana.

The latest news about the former minister is a viral picture of him supposedly taking a stroll on a street in the US with his wife.

But, is this picture authentic?

Ken Ofori-Atta declared wanted on INTERPOL’s Red Notice list

Analysis of the image

An analysis of the said image, using fact-check tools, showed that it was not doctored or AI-generated.

The image showed the former finance minister with his wife, Professor Angela Ofori-Atta, walking on a street.

A forensic analysis of the image gave details that matched the description of Ofori-Atta in the wanted notice by the OSP — a man who is about 1.7 metres tall with short dark hair and a dark complexion.

The analysis also gave details that matched the description of Professor Angela Ofori-Atta.

Ken Ofori-Atta, who was on the left, could be seen wearing a black suit jacket, white shirt, black trousers, and carrying a light-coloured backpack.

His wife was wearing a dark outfit (possibly a blazer and trousers).

When and where the image was taken:

The said image had no metadata — the date the image was taken, the camera it was taken with, the time it was taken, and other details.

Also, a reverse-image–style search could not find an exact match for this photo online, which implies that it was either taken recently or uploaded recently.

However, the search confirmed that the image was taken on a street in the United States.

The background of the image, including the storefront, the large glass windows of the building, the crosswalk in front, and the heavy pedestrian infrastructure, matches CityCenterDC or Capitol Crossing, better than more residential locations.

The image most likely shows the Tatte Bakery & Café at CityCenterDC, 1090 I Street NW, Washington, DC.

US State Department, FBI ‘clear’ Ken Ofori-Atta’s extradition request – Report

The crimes Ofori-Atta has been accused of:

The OSP is investigating the former minister for corruption-related offences in the following cases:

– Contractual arrangements between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority, aimed at enhancing revenue assurance in the downstream petroleum sector, upstream petroleum production, and the minerals and metals resources value chain.

– Termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited and Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC) for the Distribution, Loss Reduction, and Associated Network Improvement Project.

– Procurement of contractors, materials, and payments related to the National Cathedral project.

– Activities and payments associated with a contract awarded by the Ministry of Health (initially commenced by the Ministry for Special Development Initiatives) to Service Ghana Auto Group Limited for the purchase and after-sales service and maintenance of 307 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 305 CDI ambulances for the National Ambulance Service.

– Payments and utilisation of funds from the Tax Refund Account of the Ghana Revenue Authority.

The Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem Sai, has also indicated that Ken Ofori-Atta is being investigated by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) for similar allegations.

PAC directs Deputy HR Head at Environment Ministry to refund GHC31,847

0

The Public Accounts Committee has directed the Deputy Head of Human Resources at the Ministry of Environment, Science, and Technology, Ibrahim Muniru, to refund an amount of GHC31,847.00

This follows revelations in the Auditor-General’s Report that Ibrahim Muniru continued to validate the salary of one Abdul Hakeem Iddrisu, an employee who had vacated his post.

According to the report, Abdul-Hakeem Iddrisu was absent from work for a total of 109 working days between March and August 2024, despite receiving two absenteeism queries from his immediate supervisor.

Despite these red flags, the HR Deputy head continued to authorise payments, a move the Committee described as a clear breach of financial regulations and administrative procedures.

He had been given 90days to refund the money.

Speaking during its sitting on Wednesday, October 1, the Chairman of the Committee, Abena Osei-Asare, stated, “You knew he wasn’t at work, his supervisor had written a query that had been raised, and yet you kept paying him. All these things were brought to your attention, yet the validator kept validating,” she complained.

The Ranking member of the committee, Samuel Atta-Mills, said, “Madam, we will make it simple; whoever did the validation will pay GHC31,847.00 as ruled. Auditors make sure that the person pays. He’s in the office, he’s probably watching us; he has to pay GHC31,847.00, and we’re giving him 90 days to pay this amount,” he said.

Gender Ministry, Police move to arrest dismissed KNUST SHS Assistant Headmaster

0

The Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has assured that her ministry is working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure justice in the case involving the dismissed Assistant Headmaster of KNUST Senior High School and a female student.

She made this known during a working visit by Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to the ministry on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

Updating the Vice President on recent interventions, Dr. Lartey said: “The Recent one is the report of the female student at KNUST with the assistant headmaster. Even though GES through the school dismissed him, we are collaborating with the police to effect the arrest of the perpetrator.”

Charles Akwasi Aidoo, the Assistant Headmaster (Academic) of KNUST Senior High School, was removed from office by the Ghana Education Service (GES) on September 29, 2025, after a viral video allegedly showed him in a compromising situation with a minor.

The Gender Minister stressed that the ministry remains committed to protecting children and vulnerable groups, while ensuring that perpetrators of abuse face the full rigour of the law.

CADeP urges Parliament to stop passing new laws, enforce existing ones

0

Accra, Oct. 1, GNA — The Centre for Africa Development and Progress (CADeP) has urged Parliament to halt the passage of new laws and rather focus national energy on enforcing existing ones to curb corruption and waste.

Mr Johanes Koku Nyagblordzro, Executive Chairman of CADeP, said Ghana was “drowning in statutes, yet accountability remains elusive,” stressing that passing laws without enforcement was like “patching a leaking roof by adding another floor to the house.”

He made the call in a statement issued in Accra, saying Ghanaians were frustrated by annual revelations of irregularities in Auditor-General’s reports, repeated lapses highlighted by the Public Accounts Committee, and stalled prosecutions by anti-graft bodies such as the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the Economic and Organised Crime Office.

The statement cited the 2022 Auditor-General’s report, which flagged nearly GH₵17 billion in procurement breaches, unaccounted-for expenditures, and unlawful payments, with little recovery and no meaningful sanctions.

It said similar trends ran through state-owned enterprises, which accounted for GH₵5 billion in irregularities in 2021.

CADeP maintained that Ghana’s priority should be political will and institutional courage.

It called for a Parliamentary pause to strengthen oversight, institutional accountability by enforcement agencies, and civil society vigilance to demand action over endless lawmaking.

“If Ghana continues to pass new laws without enforcing old ones, the cycle of waste and corruption will only deepen. Development funds will keep disappearing, institutions will lose credibility, and citizens will grow more disillusioned with democracy itself,” the statement cautioned.

CADeP is a non-partisan, research and educational institute dedicated to promoting a strong, just and free Africa that ensures opportunity for all.

Telecel Ghana hosts business runway to empower SMEs

0

As part of activities to mark September SME Month, Telecel Ghana has held its flagship initiative, the Telecel Business Runway. This aims to equip small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with the right tools and guidance to thrive in Ghana’s business environment.

The event brought together government officials, entrepreneurs, and Telecel’s management team to discuss strategies for business growth and sustainability. This year’s month-long celebration is under the theme “Connecting the Next Generation of Entrepreneurs.”

Director of Enterprise Business at Telecel Ghana, Tawa Bolarin, acknowledged that while SMEs continue to rise across the country, they face both opportunities and challenges. She explained that the Business Runway was designed to educate and guide entrepreneurs along the often difficult path of entrepreneurship.

US economy lost 32,000 private-sector jobs in September

Private payrolls plunged in September, complicating the picture for the US economy Private payrolls plunged in September, complicating the picture for the US economy

Private payrolls plunged in September, complicating the picture for the US economy as policymakers and investors struggle to assess the state of the labor market amid a government shutdown.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics is unlikely to release the monthly jobs report this Friday due to the closure. That means many flying blind without critical economic data are having to key into any information they can get, including Wednesday’s private sector jobs data from payroll company ADP.

US private-sector businesses lost 32,000 jobs in September, according to the report. August’s previously estimated 54,000 payroll gains were downwardly revised to negative 3,000.

Small private-sector businesses drove last month’s decline, and losses were widespread across industries (with some of the largest losses being in professional and business services and leisure and hospitality), ADP reported. The bulk of the hiring occurred at health care businesses.

However, ADP’s latest numbers come with some qualifications: A preliminary “rebenchmarking” of the data was a significant factor behind the negative August revision and September’s estimated job losses, ADP’s chief economist Nela Richardson said Wednesday.

“We found that once we benchmarked that data, it actually shows a September slowdown that has been consistent with what we’ve been reporting all year,” Richardson told reporters Wednesday. “In fact, though the numbers changed, the story and the narrative and the trend remain the same: Hiring momentum has slowed from the beginning of the year through September.”

Similar to the BLS’s two-step annual process, ADP recalibrates its estimates annually to the full-year 2024 Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, which provides a comprehensive read on the number of businesses, employees and wages at the state, regional and county level because it derives that data from quarterly tax reports submitted by businesses to their states. However, it is heavily lagged.

A low-turnover environment

While ADP’s estimates don’t often correlate with the official monthly jobs numbers when they’re released days later — and have been frequently criticized by economists for having a poor track record in making short-term predictions — the report is still considered an indicator of the labor market’s trajectory.

And that outlook has been looking increasingly bleak. In addition to the private-sector job losses, the latest (and last-for-now) release from the BLS showed that the US labor market activity has grown increasingly stagnant.

Excluding the onset of the pandemic in early 2020, the hiring rate (hires as a percentage of total employment) fell in August to 3.2%, matching the lowest rate since 2013, according to the BLS’ Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey report released Tuesday.

September’s estimated job gains, which ADP tabulated using anonymized and aggregated payroll data from its clients, came in well below economists’ expectations for 50,000 jobs added.

US stocks were broadly lower Wednesday in response to uncertainty around the government shutdown and remained at similar levels after the report was released: The Dow was down around 75 points, or 0.15%, at the opening bell. The S&P 500 fell 0.3% and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.4%. The 10-year Treasury yield moved lower as investors snapped up bonds.

After Galatasaray’s 1–0 victory over Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, cameras captured a moment of mutual respect between two of the game’s biggest names, Virgil van Dijk and Victor Osimhen.

The pair were seen in the tunnel after the final whistle, exchanging shirts in the age-old football tradition.

Van Dijk, Liverpool’s captain and defensive leader, had spent much of the evening trying to keep Osimhen quiet, but the Nigerian striker ultimately made the difference by calmly slotting home a 16th-minute penalty to seal Galatasaray’s famous win in Istanbul.

Despite the disappointment of defeat, Van Dijk showed his class, greeting Osimhen warmly as they swapped jerseys.

For Osimhen, the moment capped off a memorable night in which he showed his quality against the Premier League champions.

Police hunt man after father, grandmother hacked to death in Kyenjojo

Police are investigating the incident Police are investigating the incident

Police in western Uganda have launched a manhunt for a 25-year-old man accused of killing his father and grandmother inside their home on Monday night.

The incident occurred in Bulenge Zone, Kakuba Ward, Katooke Town Council, Kyenjojo District, according to Rwenzori West Police spokesperson SP Vincent Twesige.

Police identified the suspect as Allan Bainomugisha, who fled after the alleged killings. The victims were his grandmother, Molly Teo Tumusiime, 71, and his father, Dragon Bruce, 50.

A police report released Tuesday said Bainomugisha entered his grandmother’s house, where she lived with Bruce, and hid in the ceiling earlier in the evening while the two were at a nearby trading centre.

A granddaughter, only identified as Praise, told police she saw him but did not report it. She later heard Bruce praying at about 10:30 p.m., the last time she heard his voice.

“After some hours, Praise heard Bruce crying out for help. Shortly after, Teo asked what had happened to him, but she received no reply. She then called her grandson, Muhumuza, to bring her a torch. As she moved to open the sitting room door, the suspect grabbed her,” the report said.

It added: “The suspect then attacked her with a machete, cutting her several times. Muhumuza, who is 12, ran outside to alert his uncle, Ruhamire Joel, who lives nearby.”

Ruhamire told police that when he responded, he found the suspect still in the house. The man threatened to kill him, too, before fleeing. Ruhamire then reported the incident to Katooke Police Station.

Police officers who visited the scene recovered witness statements, collected blood samples, and conducted postmortems.

“Tumusiime’s body was found in the doorway between her bedroom and the sitting room, lying in a pool of blood with deep cuts on her neck, right arm, ribs, and back. Dragon Bruce’s body was found lying on his back in his bedroom next to the sitting room. He had multiple injuries, including cuts on his chest, left ear, ribs, and a severe wound on his right thumb,” police indicated.

Speaking to Monitor, Ruhamire said the killings may have been linked to a land dispute.

“Shortly after Tumusiime gave land to her son, Bainomugisha came to his father, saying he wanted to build a house there. When his father refused, Bainomugisha went ahead and brought construction materials despite the rejection. We suspect this disagreement could have been the cause of the murders,” Ruhamire said.

He added that the children had earlier seen the suspect hide in the ceiling, but did not question him since he often ate and stayed with them.

Police said investigations were ongoing and the hunt for Bainomugisha was underway.

Murders and road crashes claim about 25 lives in Uganda everyday, according to a 2024 annual police crime report.

‘Bushfires Destroying ECG Infrastructure’

Christiana Jarto-Kaleo

The Volta Regional Manager of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Christiana Jarto-Kaleo, has revealed that bushfires are causing massive damage to electricity infrastructure, draining resources that could otherwise be used to expand services and connect new communities.

Speaking at the public hearing of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) in the Volta Region as part of the 2025–2030 major tariff review process, Madam Jarto-Kaleo, lamented the heavy toll bushfires are taking on the company’s operations.

According to her, fires set by farmers clearing land, hunters, and herdsmen often destroy electricity poles, cables, and transformers.

She stated that replacing a single pole costs about GH₵8,000, excluding transportation, installation, and contractor fees.

“With hundreds of poles destroyed in 2023 and 2024 alone, ECG has spent millions of cedis on replacements.

“The real loss is not just the poles. Communities remain without power for days, businesses suffer, and power produced but unused is wasted. Instead of extending supply to new areas, we are forced to go backwards and replace what we already had,” she said.

She appealed to traditional leaders, farmers, and community members to support efforts to prevent bushfires, stressing that resources should be channeled into improving services rather than repairing repeated damages.
