Ghana will need billions of dollars to treat, reclaim and restore vast degraded lands and waterbodies caused by activities of illegal miners over the years.
Professor Nana Browne Klutse, the Acting Chief Executive Officer, Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), described the situation as an emergency and appealed to development partners to support the country.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday, she gave a hint that a world bank funded project had helped reclaim some lands, but it was at a pilot stage and the EPA would need funding to upscale.
“We have been approached by companies to help the country reclaim and restore but the condition is for Ghana to pay for the technology after the pilot stage,” Prof. Klutse said.
The ideal situation was to ensure all mining companies, after securing permits, to pay bonds to be used to reclaim the lands, Prof Brown Klutse said.
“In our current dispensation mining has occurred on vast lands by unidentified faces who have absconded. At the moment we have vast lands that have been degraded. We need to reclaim them, but we do not have the money to do that,” she said.
In line with the new Act giving the Agency an authority status, Environmental Protection Act 2025, (Act 1124) Prof. Klutse said the Authority had begun taking steps to increase its presence in the
local areas to ensure effective monitoring and enforcement of laws prohibiting all forms of activities that pollute the environment.
“We realised that currently the Authority’s eyes are not everywhere but soon we will establish offices at the district level to educate the public, guide people on their undertaking and punish where necessary to ensure compliance,” she said.
Prof. Klutse assured that the public would see the water bodies being restored soon.
Illegal gold mining has been wreaking havoc in southern Ghana for years, particularly in resource-rich regions, such as the Upper Offin sub-basin.
According to International Water Management Institute’s study, these areas once celebrated for their dense forests and flourishing cocoa plantations, now face a grim reality of land degradation, plummeting agricultural yields, and polluted water bodies.
In 2024, the Centre for Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Services, through the SERVIR West Africa programme, revealed that more than 670 square kilometres of land – an area comparable to the size of Singapore -had been destroyed by illegal mining.
High water turbidity, which is a measure of the amount of suspended solids/particles in water from galamsey, can harm water quality, ecosystems, and human health.
In March, last year, the Ghana Water Limited complained about challenges with high turbidity levels in treating water to make it potable for the people of Sekondi-Takoradi.
The Daboase Water Treatment Plant, it said, was recording alarmingly high levels of turbidity.
The company, which initially had to deal with only 100 Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU) at the time of construction of the plant, was now grappling with 7000 NTU.
This has resulted in the frequent breakdown of machinery and cost of chemicals for treatment.
Turbidity levels from galamsey have been recorded as high as 14,000 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU), which is far above the 2,000 NTU limit.
Toxic chemicals from galamsey also contaminate water bodies leading people to seek alternative water sources, which are too expensive or unsafe.
High turbidity also causes algae blooms that can harm food chains and food webs.
Research also links water pollution from galamsey to chronic diseases such as kidney failure, birth defects, and cancer.
The Pra, Ankobra, Birim, Offin, Densu and Oti rivers have all been polluted by illegal mining.

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is confident that Ghanaians will fully appreciate the party’s efforts and achievements when the political dust settles.
Richard Ahiagbah speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, February 18, stated that the NPP is committed to transparency and accountability, rejecting claims of evading scrutiny.
“We [the NPP] have no record of running away. We’ll be here. We’ll deal with the issues here,” MrAhiagbah stated.
“It was the NDC members who ran away. My own sister Sedinam Tamakloe disappeared. She was tried in absentia, but she ought to be here. Our party doesn’t have any history of our officials running away.”
Addressing concerns over the party’s accountability as it prepares to win power in the 2028 elections, Mr Ahiagbah said there is a strong commitment within the NPP to answer for its stewardship.
“Our preoccupation is how we get our party situated and contest the 2028 election. Matters to do with accountability—our people will be here to answer the questions,” he asserted.
Richard Ahiagbah revealed that the former president of the NPP has personally directed party officials to be available and account for their actions in office.
“In fact, I don’t know if I can tell you this, but there’s an effective commitment right from the former president himself. He has given a directive to ensure that our people are available to do that.
“I just don’t want to go into the details of what he said, but there is that disposition from the former president—an indication to stay and make sure you account for your stewardship.”
Defending the NPP’s record over the past eight years, Ahiagbah remained optimistic that the party’s work will be recognized in due time.
“We came to do the best we can. And I believe that when the dust settles, Ghana will see what we have done for the eight years,” he concluded.

Haruna Mohammed, Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has criticised the handling of Ernest Kumi’s court case, alleging that the judge had a predetermined judgment.
The High Court in Koforidua, Eastern Region, on Wednesday February 19 convicted the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, for contempt of court.
The ruling followed his defiance of an interim injunction barring him from being sworn in as a legislator.
Presiding Judge, Justice Senyo Amedahe, also issued a bench warrant for Kumi’s arrest after he failed to appear before the court for sentencing.
The court had earlier restrained the MP from presenting himself for swearing-in, pending the resolution of a legal dispute. However, despite this directive, Kumi proceeded to take the oath of office in Parliament.
Citing overwhelming evidence of willful defiance, the court ruled that the lawmaker had acted in contempt.
In an interview on the Channel One Newsroom, Mohammed described the judge’s refusal to listen to or admit NPP lawyer Gary Nimako in court as disrespectful and indicative of bias.
He said “The judge insisted not to listen to and even admit the lawyer Gary Nimako in court. It was so disrespectful.”
He added that this behaviour is regrettable and unfair, as it denies the accused a fair hearing.
“People say that there are always issues of unlawful behaviors, but sometimes some of these cases are found in the law court. He was not heard, he was not listened to, he was not admitted.”
Mohammed expressed surprise at the judge’s outright refusal to recognise Nimako, even after he attempted to present relevant documents and filings.
“I was very surprised sitting in court where a case is called. That was the third case that was called in court. Then when the case was called you know the lawyers will rise and then mention the representation for the plaintiff and then the defendant. So he rose and then the judge says that he is not going to recognize him,” Mohammed explained.
According to Mohammed, the judge admitted in open court that he was referring to the case in question but still refused to hear Nimako.
“He himself admitted in open court that yes that is actually the case he was referring to but he says he will not hear him,” Mohammed added.
He emphasised that the NPP would not insult the justice system but would follow legal processes to seek redress.
“We are law-abiding citizens of this country. We will never lampoon, we will never insult the justice system in this country. We have legal processes that we have to follow, and at the appropriate time our lawyer through the NPP will speak on this particular matter,” Mohammed affirmed.
Mohammed stated that he believes the judge had already prepared his judgment before the court proceedings.
“I think that the judge had already predetermined, he had already prepared his mind to read his own judgment,” he said.
Meanwhile, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, the lawyer for Henry Boakye Yiadom, the 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for Akwatia on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that Kumi, will face immediate punishment upon his arrest for contempt of court.
According to Baidoo, the court is prepared to act swiftly to ensure justice is served, regardless of the day or time of the MP’s arrest.

MP for Tamale Central, Murtala Mohammed [L] and MP for Okaikoi Central, Patrick Boamah
The Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology (MEST) and Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Murtala Mohammed, has eulogized the Member of Parliament for Okaikoi Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, for playing a critical role in his legal journey.
Speaking in an interview on Channel 1 TV, Murtala Mohammed revealed that his colleague legislator, beyond offering words of encouragement, went as far as purchasing his admission forms to study law.
According to the outspoken lawmaker, he is eternally grateful to his colleague from the other political divide for this push, which has enabled him to acquire legal knowledge for his future career in academia after quitting politics.
“I didn’t study law to practice. Frankly, it was Honourable Patrick Boamah who insisted that I should do law. He even bought the admission forms. Yes, he insisted that I should study law. He is a very good friend of mine. So, I did, and my intention was to pursue it for academic purposes. I may do an LLM, as I want to end up in academia. Everything I do is based on the belief that politics is something I do for now, but with time, I would like to end up in academia. Nothing pleases me more than teaching,” Murtala Mohammed said.
This underscores the fact that, beyond often public disagreements, many politicians are good friends and seek each other’s interests.
Murtala Mohammed graduated from Mountcrest University with an LLB in 2016.
Once a student leader, he served as the Secretary-General of the All-African Students Union.
‘I never planned to study law, but Patrick Boamah insisted—and even went as far as buying me the forms to enroll. Today, I’m grateful for his push.’– Environment Minister, Ibrahim Murtala, on the role the MP for Okaikwei Central played in his legal journey.
Berny Sarfo, a well-known Ghanaian UK-based promoter (L)
Berny Sarfo, a well-known Ghanaian UK-based promoter also known as Bizzle, says selling events with experienced musicians is easier and faster than with ‘younger’ ones in the UK.
There have been discussions in the entertainment industry about why some Ghanaian artists struggle to fill arenas in the UK.
This has sparked a debate about whether a Ghanaian artist can fill the over 30,000-person O2 Arena in London, which has received mixed reactions.
Speaking in an interview with 3Music TV in Accra, Mr. Sarfo, who is the CEO of Bizzle Entertainment, said that veteran musicians like Daddy Lumba, Amakye Dede, and KK Fosu, among others, sell shows more easily than current top stars currently.
“People do often come out for veteran artists in the United Kingdom if you compare them with the current chart toppers. You would have to put in massive work to sell young Ghanaian artists. So, the older artists tend to have more successful shows than the younger ones,” he said.
When asked if a current Ghanaian top artist could fill the main O2 Arena, Bizzle said it would be difficult for any artist to achieve that at the moment but could be in the near future.
He stressed the need for unity among UK Ghanaian promoters so that they can help grow Ghanaian artists and also develop their fan bases in the diaspora.
Bizzle also highlighted the gap between artists, fans, and promoters, stating the need for some kind of strong connections to ensure events are successful.
Bizzle has been one of the top-notch Ghanaian promoters in the UK, organising some successful shows, including Afroflex, Amakye Dede live in London, Asakaa UK concert, KK Fosu live in London, among others.
He has also worked with some of Ghana’s finest artists, including Kwabena Kwabena, Samini, Medikal, Beeztrap, Shatta Wale, Fameye, and Asakaa Boys, just to mention a few.
President John Mahama and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has criticized President John Dramani Mahama for dismissing public service workers employed under the Akufo-Addo government just days before leaving office.
According to Dr. Bawumia, Mahama’s decision to dismiss public workers employed by the previous government is a threat to democracy.
“Unfortunately, I need to speak up on recent developments that pose significant threats to our democracy.
“To look away whilst these ills persist is to abandon my responsibility to remind President Mahama and his government of the overriding duty to live by the democratic tenets envisioned in the 1992 Constitution and do justice and ‘right to all manner of persons.’
“When Ghanaians voted for change in the 2024 general elections, it manifested the desire to continue with national development, albeit with different people at the helm of affairs.
“It was within this spirit that I gave an early concession speech, urging all Ghanaians to support our new president as he attempts to make his contribution to the cumulative progress successive governments have chalked over the years,” he said.
In a Facebook post on February 19, 2025, the former Vice President, who doubles as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 general elections, argued that there is no basis for the president to have sacked the government employees just because the previous administration employed them.
“Since assuming office, however, the government of President Mahama has pursued a series of actions targeting Ghanaians who were legitimately employed during the previous administration. It is ironic that a party which campaigned on the wings of jobs for all Ghanaians is arbitrarily dismissing the same Ghanaians, rendering them jobless, just because a different government employed them to put their talents to bear on the nation’s development and earn income to cater for themselves and their families.
“The least a party that campaigned on jobs could do under conditions of unemployment is to also innovate and create jobs rather than dismiss people,” he added.
Dr. Bawumia continued, “Regrettably, these dismissals have been extended to directors who are public servants and not politicians. In some of the cases, the only reason for dismissal was that the persons whose livelihoods have been destroyed are known to or related to politicians as if to suggest that they cannot live independent professional lives.
“However qualified they are, there are also reports of government’s intention to terminate the appointments of persons performing critical jobs such as security personnel, nurses, and teachers simply because they were appointed during the tenure of the previous administration. That will be most unfortunate.”
According to him, there is a general atmosphere of insecurity and attacks in the country, including against journalists.

Dressing fashionably for church on Sundays requires a balance between modesty and style to create a polished and respectful appearance. Choosing well-tailored outfits enhances confidence and ensures a presentable look suitable for a place of worship. Fabrics like cotton, lace, and chiffon offer both comfort and elegance, making them ideal for church outfits. Soft and breathable materials allow for ease of movement, ensuring that worshippers remain comfortable throughout the service.

Coordinating colors and patterns thoughtfully ensures a balanced and elegant style, preventing outfits from appearing too loud or distracting. Pastel shades, floral prints, and neutral tones contribute to a calm and graceful presence, while minimal yet stylish embellishments add a unique touch.
Accessories such as pearl earrings, delicate necklaces, and simple bracelets complement the outfit without drawing excessive attention. Matching handbags and comfortable footwear, such as block heels or stylish flats, complete the look while ensuring ease of movement. Well-groomed hair and light, natural makeup further enhance the overall presentation, reflecting a sense of self-care and confidence. Men can achieve a fashionable Sunday look by pairing dress shirts with well-fitted trousers, polished shoes, and subtle accessories like a wristwatch or pocket square. The Ghana national team has managed to restart their game after a series of unsuccessful matches and return to the winning path. The “Black Stars” are showing quality football again and give fans hope for a successful future. How did the team manage to rehabilitate themselves? Who was the key figure in this process? And how successful will Otto Addo’s second arrival be? You can bet on the national team at 22bet Ghana. You will be pleased with high odds and a choice of events, as well as profitable promotions and many bonuses.
Ghana’s excellent game after a series of failures
After an unsuccessful performance at the Africa Cup of Nations and a disappointing start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the Ghana national team has finally started to demonstrate football that matches its status. The team is playing in an organized manner again, acts boldly in attack and reliably in defense, and the results are gradually improving.
Fans and experts are happy to note the progress that the team has made. Ghana has been experiencing difficulties for a long time: the loss of form of key players, poor organization of the game, unsuccessful tactical decisions – all this led to a protracted crisis. However, the situation has changed significantly now, and the Ghanaians are again laying claim to the leading positions in African football.
One of the key factors of success was the return of head coach Otto Addo to the team. He is the one who is building a new strategy, focusing on the development of young players and bringing in fresh tactical ideas. At first, things did not go well for him, but people still trust the specialist. As the latest results have shown, most likely for good reason. It will be interesting to see if Ghana can maintain this momentum and once again become a serious force on the international stage? The fans would really like to, because they did not qualify for the African Nations Championship and failed to qualify for the CAN, without achieving a single victory. 8 matches without a win in a row were terrible, but now things should get better.
Who helped the Ghanaians become better?
One of the main changes in Ghana’s game was the improvement of interaction between the lines. If earlier the team made too many mistakes in the center of the field and defense, now the players act in a coordinated manner and clearly follow the coach’s instructions.
In addition, the key players of the national team have returned to optimal condition. Jordan Ayew has become a real leader of the team’s attack. His creativity, speed and goal-scoring instinct bring Ghana important victories. It is also worth mentioning Tariq Lamptey, who added mobility on the flank, and Thomas Partey, who stabilized the game in the center of the field.
Also worth mentioning:
Issahaku Fatawa.
Ernest Nuamah.
Mohammed Kudus.
Gideon Mensah.
We should not forget about the young generation of Ghanaian footballers. The team has received promising players who are ready to prove themselves at the highest level. Their hunger for victory and desire to prove their worth allow Ghana to look fresh and motivated. Inaki Williams also accepted his native citizenship, so he should help the team become better.
Otto Addo’s second coming: now it’s getting better!
Otto Addo’s return to the post of head coach has become one of the main factors in the rehabilitation of the Ghanaian national team. After his first departure, the team had serious problems finding the best coaching staff, but now the coach is back, and the results speak for themselves.
However, the results did not immediately become excellent, and the disastrous series caught Ghana under the leadership of Addo. Everyone criticized the specialist, the fans demanded his resignation, because for the first time in 20 years the team did not qualify for the CAN. Otto Addo revised the tactical schemes, focused on aggressive, attacking football and restored the players’ confidence. He found a balance between young talents and experienced players, which allowed the team to demonstrate more stable results.
However, there is still a lot of work ahead. Ghana has key matches in the 2026 World Cup qualification ahead, where they will have to prove that the team is really ready to fight for high goals. Now everything is working out and the Ghana team has managed to overcome the crisis and return to the winning path. The good form of the leaders, the competent work of the coaching staff and improved tactics – all this allowed the team to regain confidence. The question now is whether the “Black Stars” will be able to maintain this pace and get to the World Cup? In any case, Ghana has proven that when they really want to, they can!
Member of Parliament for Sene East, Dominic Napare
The Member of Parliament for Sene East, Dominic Napare, has urged for a significant enhancement in local governance through increased stakeholder participation.
Delivering a statement on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, February 18, 2025, the MP grounded his call in the principles laid out in Ghana’s Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), emphasizing the need for practical implementation of participatory governance at the district level.
According to him, the constitutional mandate for decentralization, as contained in the 1992 Constitution, makes decentralization mandatory and provides that this country (Ghana) put in place “a system of local government and administration which shall, as far as practicable, be decentralized.”
He stressed that despite the legal framework provided by the Local Governance Act, there remains a significant gap in real-world application, particularly in engaging local stakeholders.
The MP pointed out that Act 936 gives “elaborate and extensive opportunity and guidelines to Local Level Stakeholders to effectively participate and provide oversight to ensure efficient service delivery,” yet this is not the case to a large extent.
He specifically mentioned the lack of stakeholder involvement in crucial processes like the preparation of by-laws and fee-fixing resolutions, which are vital for local revenue generation and community engagement.
“The extensive involvement of Stakeholders in the determination of how much rate, fees, and fines they would be paying during the fee-fixing formulation stage will reduce the assemblies’ cost of sensitization and education on citizens’ tax obligations,” he argued, adding that such involvement could lead to smoother tax collection processes and increase local development funds.
He also brought attention to the inclusivity provisions within the Act, advocating for the protection of marginalized groups and the promotion of their participation in governance.
“If District Assemblies were to implement these principles to the letter, by instituting programs of pro-women and pro-marginalized affirmative actions, the issue of abysmally low participation of women in governance, particularly local governance, would have improved,” he noted.
To address these issues, the MP for Sene East proposed several actionable steps. He suggested a need for “serious sensitization of the public and also local government practitioners on participatory Governance at the Local Level under Act 936.”
He recommended that the Ministry of Local Government and District Assemblies engage in extensive educational campaigns about the Act’s provisions, particularly sections 40 to 48, which deal with participatory governance.
He further advocated for the inclusion of participatory governance metrics in the District Performance Assessment Tool (DPAT), stating, “I suggest that the Local Government Ministry include participatory Governance at the Local Level as a qualifying criterion to the District Performance Assessment Tool (DPAT).”
Napare concluded his statement by calling for a renewed relationship between local governments and citizens to foster trust and effective governance. “The citizens need to be more active and engaged, while the Assemblies be more responsive and effective.
These provisions must be operationalized and practicalized for popular participation to become a reality,” he said.
His statement attracted supporting comments from other MPs who called for the need to adopt the recommendations proposed by the Sene East MP in pursuit of a more robust local governance structure.

Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to reverse what he describes as unfair dismissals of Ghanaians employed under the previous administration and ensure the protection of all citizens.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, February 19, Dr. Bawumia expressed deep concern over recent developments that he believes threaten Ghana’s democracy and undermine the principles of fairness and justice enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.
Dr. Bawumia stated that while he had personally vowed to allow the new government the necessary space to settle and implement its policies, the alarming trend of dismissals targeting individuals hired during the previous administration has compelled him to speak out.
“Since assuming office, however, the government of President Mahama has pursued a series of actions targeting Ghanaians who were legitimately employed during the previous administration. It is ironic that a party which campaigned on the wings of jobs for all Ghanaians is arbitrarily dismissing the same Ghanaians, rendering them jobless, just because a different government employed them to put their talents to bear on the nation’s development and earn income to cater for themselves and their families,” he said.
He further criticized the government’s decision to dismiss public service directors who are non-political appointees, stating that their only offense appeared to be their association or relation to politicians. He also raised concerns over reports of planned terminations of security personnel, nurses, and teachers appointed under the previous government, describing such actions as detrimental to national progress.
Dr. Bawumia also lamented what he termed a growing atmosphere of insecurity, pointing to attacks on journalists, military raids on the homes of former government officials, and mob violence targeting individuals and state institutions. He warned that such actions resembled a military takeover rather than a peaceful democratic transition.
“These are certainly worrying times for our democracy, and the earlier action is taken to protect institutions and democratic practice, the better it would be for Ghana’s forward match,” he cautioned.
Calling on President Mahama to be a leader for all Ghanaians, he urged him to put a stop to the dismissals and ensure that all citizens are treated fairly and protected under the law.
“There is no reset by repeating or escalating what may have happened in the past. Therefore, I call on His Excellency President Mahama to be a president for all Ghanaians by putting a stop to these developments, reversing the unfair dismissals, and protecting all our citizens.”
Dr. Bawumia concluded his statement with a call for the advancement of democracy, protection of state institutions, and upholding of the Constitution, asserting that Ghana must do better in ensuring fairness and justice for all.
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has lambasted President John Dramani Mahama’s administration over recent events in the country.
According to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 general elections, he conceded early defeat in the election to maintain peace in the country, but the opposite seems to be materializing.
According to him, there is a general atmosphere of insecurity and attacks in the country, including against journalists.
In a Facebook post on February 19, 2025, he stated, “There is a general atmosphere of insecurity with attacks on journalists, the use of our military to raid the homes of former government officials and communities, as well as mobs attacking innocent individuals and state institutions.”
He continued, “This is rather reminiscent of a military takeover and not a peaceful democratic transition. These are certainly worrying times for our democracy, and the earlier action is taken to protect institutions and democratic practice, the better it would be for Ghana’s forward march.
“Ghanaians understood the promise of change to mean discarding the ills associated with the governance of our nation since 1992 and also an opportunity to show the way for future governments.
“There is no reset by repeating or escalating what may have happened in the past. Therefore, I call on His Excellency President Mahama to be a president for all Ghanaians by putting a stop to these developments, reversing the unfair dismissals, and protecting all our citizens.”
Bawumia also criticized the president for dismissing public workers employed by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
“We must advance our democracy. We must protect our state institutions. We must uphold our Constitution. Ghana can do better. Ghana must do better!”
Bawumia’s condemnation comes after some alleged party members have been attacking certain state institutions to take over following the change of government.
In addition, there is a recent news report where a group of individuals dressed in military uniform stormed the residence of former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, on Tuesday February 11, 2025.
The raid took place at his home in Cantonments while Ofori-Atta was reportedly out of the country. The motive for the raid on the former minister remains unclear.

Media personality and lawyer, Sampson Lardy Anyenini
Ghanaian media personality and lawyer, Samson Lardy Anyenini, has taken a swipe at the New Patriotic Party (NPP), over their recent complaints about governance.
In a post on his Facebook page, Anyenini highlighted what he sees as the irony of the NPP’s criticisms of President John Mahama’s administration, given their own track record in government.
“NPP, as they complain about wrongs, especially to Akufo-Addo regime appointees/recruitments, they are so terribly guilty of these and not fit to cast the first stone,” he wrote.
He further expressed frustration at how the NPP now claims to be victims of the same governance issues they were previously criticized for, adding, “So, your first reaction when you read and hear them each day cry foul over things they may have done worse, may be to shout, ‘shut up, hypocrites!’”
His post also pointed out the irony of the party’s attempt to rally media support on issues they once dismissed, stating, “It may sound funny as they court media attention and even worse, attempt, I don’t know, a stampede or ‘blackmail’ trying to accuse media houses or journalists of not doing enough about some matter or complaint.”
While acknowledging that some of the NPP’s concerns may be valid, Anyenini stressed that they should be judged by principles of justice and good governance rather than the party’s past behavior.
“Some of their complaints are genuine, but only if measured in the scales of justice, good conscience, and good governance – and not by their own standards while in government,” he noted.
Touching on the need to break Ghana’s cycle of political retaliation, he expressed hope that President Mahama’s measured approach to leadership could mark the beginning of meaningful change.
“Ghana’s progress should not be hindered by the flaws of the NPP or NDC, and the cycle of retaliation must end. President John Mahama appears naturally measured, and this could be the starting point for change, even if there’s no guarantee of reciprocity in the future, for God and Country,” he remarked.
Ending his post on an aspirational note, Anyenini envisioned a Ghana that rises above partisan politics and embraces justice and progress.
“I have a dream – I have a dream of a Ghana where the Black Star of Africa shines brightly, guided by the principles of justice, equality, progress, and all that is envisaged in the preamble of the Constitution and the directive principles of state policy,” he wrote.

Delivering a statement on the floor of Parliament on February 13, 2025, the MP highlighted the resilience of Ghana’s industry amidst global challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and praised initiatives such as the One District, One Factory (1D1F) and the Ghana Automotive Development Policy undertaken by the previous government for showing promising prospects of fostering industrial growth and diversification in the country.
“Indeed, for the first time in the history of Ghana, we have seven vehicle assembly plants manufacturing about 14 brands of vehicles. While the 1D1F program, notwithstanding its challenges, has led to the establishment of new factories and expanded existing ones, creating opportunities for companies that were once denied operation,” he underscored some of the results yielded through the policies implemented by the erstwhile Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government.
The MP underscored the economic impact of these programs with statistics from the World Bank, “According to the World Bank, the industrial sector’s contribution to Ghana’s GDP increased significantly from approximately 24.3% in 2016 to 33.0% in 2023.”
He further elaborated on the growth in manufacturing value addition, “It is also worthy of note that manufacturing value addition increased from $6 billion to $8.5 billion between 2016 and 2023.”
However, he acknowledged the challenges facing the sector, listing high electricity tariffs, inadequate infrastructure, access to capital, technological innovation, and the need for export diversification as significant hurdles. He said,
To address these issues, Mr. Okyere Baafi, who served as a Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry in the previous government, proposed a series of recommendations aimed at strengthening key policies.
He called for a comprehensive evaluation of existing policies like 1D1F to identify successful strategies and areas needing improvement.
Additionally, he emphasized the need to improve infrastructure by investing in robust transportation networks, reliable power supply, and high-speed internet access to reduce operational costs and enhance competitiveness.
Okyere Baafi also highlighted the necessity of enhancing access to finance, suggesting that the government should expand credit opportunities for SMEs through government-backed loans, microfinance institutions, and innovative financial instruments.
He advocated for promoting technological innovation by investing in education and training to develop a skilled workforce and incentivize the adoption of technology across various industries.
He further urged Ghana’s active participation in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a means of increasing the nation’s export earnings and market access.
“I urge this House to take a serious interest in trade and industrial activities to help boost Ghana’s intra-African and international trade, systems, and infrastructure, to earn more in the area of exports, and to help build a better Ghana,” he concluded.

Participants at a regional training center for local teachers in West African countries
The Central Regional Director of Education, Emmanuel Essuman, has announced the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) preparations to pilot the introduction of the Chinese language into the school curriculum across the country.
He noted that Chinese language education has become an important addition to the educational landscape in the Central Region. He further highlighted the role of the Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Coast (CIUCC) in enhancing the region’s academic offerings.
Mr. Essuman made these remarks at the inauguration of a regional training center for local teachers in West African countries, an event attended by students from primary, basic, senior high, and tertiary institutions.
He expressed confidence that the training center would play a crucial role in equipping local teachers with the skills and knowledge needed to teach the Chinese language effectively, thereby fostering cultural understanding and collaboration between Ghana and China.
According to him, “The Central Regional Directorate of Education affirms its commitment to working with CIUCC in selecting pilot schools, rolling out, and fully implementing the program.”
Mr. Essuman disclosed that, in the near future, every child in the Central Region would have access to Chinese language education, enabling them to connect globally.
“It is worthy to note that Chinese language education has provided an opportunity for students in the Central Region not only to learn a second language but also to pursue degrees in Chinese, access scholarships in China, participate in global competitions such as the Chinese Bridge, and secure employment in Chinese enterprises,” he stated.
He added that the new secondary education curriculum allows students to select international languages as part of their electives, emphasizing that “Chinese is one of the languages available for study.”
Expressing his deep gratitude to the Confucius Institute for its unwavering support, Mr. Essuman commended the institute’s efforts in establishing Chinese language clubs in senior high schools across Ghana.

Milan prosecutors plan to drop a case brought against the European division of Google after the company agreed to pay 326 million euros ($340 million) to settle a tax claim, they said on Wednesday.
The agreement covers the period between 2015 and 2019 and covers sanctions, penalties and interest, prosecutors said in a statement.
Last year Reuters reported that Italy asked Google to pay 1 billion euros in unpaid taxes and penalties, seven years after the U.S. company settled a previous landmark tax dispute with Rome authorities.
The Milan prosecutors alleged that Google did not file and pay taxes on revenue generated in Italy, basing its claim on the digital infrastructure Google has in the country.
In 2017 Google paid 306 million euros to settle a previous case that found it had a permanent presence in Italy.

Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician Esther Smith has addressed allegations from OFM Computer World and its CEO, Dr. Debrich Jeremiah Acheampong, regarding digital fraud and control over her music rights and platforms.
In a public statement, Esther Smith explained that she believes OFM Computer World and its affiliate, Debrich Consultancy, took actions that led to unauthorised control over her digital platforms, including her official website and YouTube channel.
Esther Smith expressed concerns that her music distribution accounts and online presence were mismanaged and that she did not receive the full benefits from her music’s digital distribution.
Smith also shared that she uncovered discrepancies related to her song ownership and royalties, which led her to question the company’s practices in managing her digital assets.
“I was not informed or consulted about changes made to my official platforms. Upon further investigation, I discovered issues that caused confusion about the rightful ownership and royalties from my music,” Smith said.
She further explained that she felt payments for certain services were not properly justified and that she was misled about the promotional efforts made on her behalf.
Meanwhile, Esther Smith’s concerns have caught the attention of other artists in the industry, who have come forward with similar experiences related to their digital content management. Many have echoed Smith’s call for greater transparency in digital partnerships within the music industry.
Background on Debrich’s Statement
In response to Smith’s remarks, Dr. Debrich Jeremiah Acheampong of OFM Computer World has stated that the company entered into a contractual agreement with Smith in 2020, in which they managed her YouTube channel and other online platforms as part of a digital partnership.
Dr. Acheampong clarified that the company believes the agreement was not properly upheld when changes were made to the channel’s login credentials, disrupting their account management. He has emphasised the importance of following contractual agreements and ensuring that digital platforms are managed according to the terms set out by both parties.

Former Economic Advisor of Ghana’s former Vice President, Dr Gideon Boako, has cautioned the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu to desist from peddling falsehoods about the previous government.
According to him, it will do a lot of good to the people of Ghana if the government publishes the balances in the sinking fund and stop the peddling of falsehoods.
Dr Gideon Boako who made this known in a post shared via social media said what the government did with the recent payment to bondholders which was announced was to ” simply sweep funds from various accounts into the sinking fund. If there were no funds left as buffers, where would they sweep from?”
He further explained that “We had auction excess on 3rd Jan – over GHc700 million, which was not spent. We left GHc3 billion of end of year revenue also as buffer plus many more unspent funds in various accounts. Off-course they also added as they got auction excesses, too, but to say that there were no significant buffers cannot be true”.
Background
Felix Kwakye Ofosu has dismissed claims by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that they left buffers for servicing the debts of bondholders.
His remarks come in response to statements from former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam and other NPP officials, who argued that their government had strategically positioned reserves to ensure that such payments could be smoothly executed.
During a press briefing on Wednesday, February 19, Kwakye Ofosu did not hold back in his critique of the NPP’s assertion.
“For officials of the former government to claim that these payments resulted from their work, they need to point specifically to where those buffers were located.
“Because in order to pay the money, you need to find it and lodge it somewhere. That is what you call a buffer—pending payment at a given date.”
The debate centers on whether the previous government had indeed left behind a financial cushion or if the current administration sourced the funds independently.
Kwakye Ofosu challenged the NPP to provide concrete proof, stating, “If the NPP officials are saying that we were able to pay these monies because they left money in the central fund, it should reflect in the statement of account.”
The numbers, according to him, simply don’t add up. “We are talking about payments within the range of GH¢6 billion. And you and I know that $64,000 cannot amount to GH¢6 billion.”
Former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo has opted not to comment on the petition seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, citing her recent swearing-in as a member of the Council of State and her unfamiliarity with the petition and its response.
Speaking to the media, she clarified that the matter had not reached the Council of State, making it inappropriate for her to express an opinion at this stage.
“That has nothing to do with the Council of State at this stage. It has not reached the Council of State, and I’m not going to prejudge anything. What I’ve seen of the petition is what I saw in the newspaper. I have not seen the Chief Justice’s response,” she stated.
Dismissing the idea of weighing in on the issue, she emphasized that she does not hold any supervisory role over the Chief Justice.
“I will not do that. I’m not her boss. As far as I’m concerned, she’s a judge performing her judicial function and a Chief Justice performing her administrative function,” she added.
While refraining from commenting on the petition, Sophia Akuffo reiterated her long-standing stance on judicial reforms, particularly regarding the appointment process for Superior Court judges.
“There might be some reforms needed in the methodology for the selection and appointment of judges to the Superior Courts. I have already spoken about it many times, and I still stand by that. In the 21st century, we need a more transparent method of selecting people to assure that it is always by merit,”
she asserted.

Takoradi MP and former Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere-Darko Mensah, has called on the government to install solar-powered CCTV cameras along water bodies to intensify the fight against illegal mining (galamsey).
His suggestion comes against the backdrop of alarming revelations by the Lands Minister, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, who recently painted a disturbing picture of the nation’s ongoing struggle against galamsey.
According to the Minister, illegal miners have taken over nine forest reserves, completely blocking access to the Forestry Commission and exacerbating the destruction of natural resources.

In response to these concerns, Mr Okyere-Darko Mensah stressed the need for modern technology to aid law enforcement in monitoring and preventing illegal mining activities.
“Now that we have digitalization, it is important to implement and invest in solar-powered CCTV cameras along the rivers,” he said on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, February 19.
The MP argued that solar-powered surveillance would provide 24/7 monitoring, especially in remote areas lacking electricity, and could capture illegal mining activities that often occur under the cover of darkness.
Reflecting on past challenges, he criticised the current approach of deploying security forces from Accra, noting that such interventions often fall short.
“By the time soldiers even move into the districts, the miners have already been informed and fled. During my time, when we conducted morning operations, the illegal miners would be gone, only to return at night to continue their activities. It has been very difficult for our agencies to stop them permanently,” he explained.
He also stressed the importance of community involvement in the fight against galamsey, calling for local committees to have a stronger role in issuing mining licenses.
“If we don’t involve the communities directly, there won’t be any sense of ownership. The fight against galamsey has always been driven from Accra, but the districts and communities must take charge. Without this, it will continue to be a losing battle,” the Takoradi MP added.
Addressing the issue of river guards previously deployed to protect water bodies, the MP acknowledged that corruption within their ranks had undermined the initiative.
“We trained a lot of river guards, but over time, issues of morality and corruption surfaced. Some of those meant to protect the rivers ended up colluding with illegal miners. That’s why we now need to rely on digital tools like CCTV cameras that can’t be bribed,” he noted.

Executives of the National Union of Ghana Students
The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has officially informed the Greater Accra Regional Police Command of its planned demonstration against the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The protest, scheduled for Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at 9:00 AM, will take place at Obra Spot, Circle, Accra.
The demonstration follows concerns over the recent withholding and cancellation of results for some students who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
NUGS President Daniel Korley Botchway condemned WAEC’s actions, stating, “We see this as an injustice and an abuse of discretionary power by WAEC. The delay has rendered affected students ineligible for admission into tertiary institutions, as all major applications have been concluded.”
He further called on all affected students, parents, and stakeholders to join the demonstration, emphasizing, “This is a fight for justice, and we urge everyone to stand with us.”
The student body is demanding urgent redress and a transparent process to resolve the issue, ensuring that affected students are given a fair opportunity to continue their education.

The Netherlands says it will return more than 100 Benin Bronzes that British troops looted from Nigeria in the late 19th Century and which ended up in a Dutch museum.
Thousands of these culturally significant sculptures and carvings were stolen during the violent destruction of Benin City, in modern-day Nigeria’s Edo state, in 1897.
The treasures were sold, some to private collectors and others to museums like the Wereldmuseum in The Netherlands, which has displayed these artefacts for decades.
The return of the 119 artefacts is the “largest repatriation of Benin antiquities”, said Olugbile Holloway, director-general of Nigeria’s National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM).
Despite the name, not all the statues are made of bronze. They include figurines, tusks, sculptures of Benin’s rulers, and an ivory mask. They were made between the 15th and 19th Centuries.
A transfer of agreement is due to be signed on Wednesday. Mr Holloway added that he hoped this would set a good example for other countries.
In 2022, Germany was the first to return over 20 Benin bronzes in a bid to deal with its “dark colonial history”.
“With this return, we are contributing to the redress of a historical injustice that is still felt today,” said Dutch Minister of Culture, Education, and Science Eppo Bruins, reports the AFP news agency.
The king and important dignitaries wore armbands such as this one
The sculptures, prized for their beauty and technical artistry, are of spiritual and historical significance for the people from that part of Nigeria.
Their theft still remains a point of pain for the descendants of those from the ancient Benin kingdom.
This move may increase pressure on other institutions to return the Benin Bronzes, especially the British Museum, which has over 900 artefacts.
Protests and demonstrations have taken place outside the British Museum as part of a campaign for their return.
This statue depicts a Benin king, known as an Oba
However, an act of parliament prevents the British Museum from sending them back.
For many in Nigeria, the Benin Bronzes are a potent reminder of the violence of colonialism.
The NCMM has issued formal repatriation requests to museums across the world.
Nigeria said it plans to open the Edo Museum of West African Art in Benin City in 2026, designed by the British-Ghanaian architect Sir David Adjaye, to house the largest collection of Benin Bronzes ever assembled.

The NPP Director of Communications has revealed that ex-President Nana Akufo-Addo has directed his former appointees to remain available for any accountability processes following the conclusion of his administration.
Richard Ahiagbah speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, February 18, stressed the NPP’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
“We [the NPP] have no record of running away; we’ll be here,” he stated firmly.
Mr Ahiagbah’s comments come amid calls for accountability from various quarters of the public as the country transitions into a new political administration.
Until recently, the Office of the Special Prosecutor had declared former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta a fugitive on the country’s wanted list.
The sick cousin of the former President, according to his lawyers, had told the Chief of Staff about his medical condition, his decision to seek treatment abroad and availability when needed.
“We’ll deal with the issues here. It was the NDC members who ran away. My own sister, Sedinam Tamakloe, disappeared. She was tried in absentia, but she ought to be here. Our party has no history of our officials fleeing from accountability.”
According to Mr Ahiagbah, the NPP’s priority remains focused on preparing for the 2028 elections while ensuring that its members answer any questions regarding their stewardship.
“Our preoccupation is how we get our party situated and contest the 2028 election. Matters to do with accountability—our people will be here to answer the questions,” he assured.
Revealing the directive from the former President, he noted, “There’s an effective commitment right from the former President himself. He has given a directive to ensure that our people are available to do that.
“I just don’t want to go into the details of what he said, but there is that disposition from the former President—an indication to stay and make sure that you account for [your stewardship].”
Defending the Akufo-Addo administration’s record, Mr Ahiagbah expressed confidence that history will judge the government favourably.
“We came to do the best we can. And I believe that when the dust settles, Ghana will see what we have done for the eight years,” he said.

George Ayisi, member of the New Patriotic Party communications team
Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, George Ayisi, has raised concerns over the decision by President John Dramani Mahama’s administration to revoke all recruitments made after the December 7, 2024, elections.
Speaking on GHOne TV with Lily Mohammed, he questioned the move, warning that such actions could affect the goodwill Mahama’s government currently enjoys.
“Employment or recruitment is not an effect, it is a process. Before you recruit there is a technical clearance or financial clearance before the recruitment process kicks in. And all these have gone through from 2024 till the time the recruitments were done,” Ayisi explained.
His remarks come after the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, issued a directive revoking all appointments and recruitments made in the Public Services of Ghana after the elections, stating that such appointments did not align with good governance principles.
“Consistent with government pronouncement in relation to the near end of tenure appointments and recruitments, I wish to bring to your attention that all appointments and recruitments made in the Public Services of Ghana after 7th December 2024 are not in compliance with established good governance practices and principles,” Debrah said.
Addressing the controversy, Ayisi acknowledged frustrations among those affected, particularly individuals who had been following up on recruitment processes since early 2024. He also referenced claims that some recruits before 2016 were stopped and urged the Mahama administration to be cautious.
“There are other angles, I know there have been security services recruitment since January, and some of us were chasing and could not even get one. It’s unfortunate, you know as politicians people will come to you. So we followed, when is it starting, have they started?”
He further cautioned, “Mahama administration right now has a massive goodwill. It shouldn’t eat it away. Some of these things begin to take it out.”

Kofi Akpaloo, Leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG)
The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) has criticized the National Communications Authority (NCA) for shutting down unauthorized broadcasting stations without adequate engagement.
In a press statement dated February 19, 2025, LPG acknowledged the importance of regulatory compliance but argued that a more consultative approach could have been taken to prevent job losses.
“The abrupt shutdown of these stations without thorough engagement and alternative solutions has put hardworking journalists and media workers at risk of unemployment,” the party stated.
LPG urged the Ministry of Communications and the NCA to adopt a more flexible approach, stating that “instead of immediate shutdowns, the government should engage media houses, provide clear guidelines, and offer reasonable timelines to ensure sustainable broadcasting operations.”

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, ordered the closure of seven radio stations across the country.
He stated that the decision was taken to enforce compliance with broadcasting regulations and national security requirements.
Announcing the directive in a Facebook post on Tuesday, 18th February, the Minister said, “Today, in two separate cases, I have directed the National Communications Authority Ghana to suspend and enforce a prohibition of broadcast on seven (7) radio stations in total.”
Manchester City’s shocking decline and fall was confirmed by their own travelling supporters suffering on the top tier of the Bernabeu as they were being ruthlessly put to the sword by Real Madrid.
The giant clock inside this magnificent arena was on 80 minutes when Mateo Kovacic lined up a tame shot that flew straight at Real keeper Thibaut Courtois, who was probably grateful for the exercise.
City were trailing 3-0, a scoreline that flattered them, so the hardy band of followers decided irony was the best medicine for the torture of watching their once all-conquering side, breaking out into rapturous cheering and applause.
Moments later, with City achieving the rare feat of stringing several passes together, chants of “Ole” came from the travelling support.
This summed up a pitiful, desperate night for manager Pep Guardiola, as they subsided in the most timid fashion, a sense of inevitability draped over the Bernabeu from the moment Kylian Mbappe scored the first goal of a brilliant hat-trick after only four minutes.
Losing to Real Madrid is an occupational hazard of the Champions League. Losing to Real Madrid by barely laying a glove on them is a sign of Manchester City’s steep downward curve this season.
The credits were rolling, and not just on their Champions League campaign, as they failed to reach the last 16 for the first time since they failed to get past the group stage in 2012-13.
They are surely rolling, too, on a great team in need of major renovation.
In the most palatial surroundings of this rebuilt stadium, this had the look and feel of the end of an era.
Guardiola almost seemed to accept this was the case as he stated in the aftermath: “Nothing is eternal.”
He said: “The best team won. They deserved it. This is the benchmark. We have to accept it and move forward.
“In previous seasons when we were better, it hurt more. We have to accept it and the reality of our team.”
Asked whether a rebuild is needed, he said: “We have time. We have 13 games left in the Premier League to get into this competition next season.”
City’s need for a changing of the guard was made to look even more stark by the ease in which they were dismissed by Real Madrid, yes the holders and the superpower of the Champions League, but also a side they have consistently pushed in matches almost too close to call over several years.
Not here. This was a rout with a casual air.
Real Madrid were able to play within themselves after four minutes, Mbappe’s hat-trick completed with a superb speed of thought and foot for his second after 33 minutes then a low drive just after the hour.
The Bernabeu, surrounded by thousands of fans forming a welcoming committee for Carlo Ancelotti’s side two hours before kick-off, with flares lighting up the Spanish sky and the smell of cordite in the air, witnessed a procession, a very painful procession for those who travelled from Manchester.
Guardiola, justifiably, will claim mitigating circumstances as Erling Haaland was only fit enough for the bench, not even taking part in the pre-match warm-up after sustaining a knee injury late in the 4-0 win against Newcastle United.
And moments after Mbappe opened the scoring, John Stones suffered another injury and limped off.
It was not that City lost, most observers expected this outcome after the 3-2 defeat in the first leg at Etihad Stadium, it was the manner of the defeat.
City never looked like they believed they could pull off the “perfect” performance Guardiola stated was required to overturn that deficit. This was about as far from perfection as it gets.
And the clues were everywhere that if it is not exactly back to the drawing board for Guardiola after six Premier Leagues, a Champions League, two FA Cups, four League Cups, a Super Cup and a Club World Cup in a magnificent run of successes, then it is certainly time for a new set of plans.
Kevin de Bruyne, who has decorated this fixture over many years, was only on the bench after an ineffectual performance in the first leg.
John Stones, 31 in May, is still a pivotal figure but suffers so many injuries, while 34-year-old surprise starter Ilkay Gundogan delivered more evidence that he left his best at Manchester City in his glorious first spell.
Goalkeeper Ederson, 31, is not the guarantee of reliability he once was while gifted midfield metronome Bernardo Silva is not the influence of old as he reaches 30. Jack Grealish, 30 in September, was also only on the bench.
The renewal has started with new faces such as striker Omar Marmoush, who had no service worthy of the name here, and midfielder Nico Gonzalez, as well as 20-year-old defender Abdukodir Khusanov, who suffered as he was pressed into service in an unaccustomed right-back role.
It was a tough night for the young defender, clearly seen as a weakness in City’s make-up and relentlessly targeted down the flank.
Guardiola’s takeaway from this harrowing night must be that he needs a ruthless cull of those older names, players who have delivered so magnificently for him.
Rarely has such an elite team’s form and quality fallen off the cliff so fast and so hard.
This is a team that has been allowed to grow too old together, and is now unable to find the old hunger that enabled it to return to the well of success so brilliantly year after year.
Guardiola has signed a new two-year contract and his task must be to fashion a new team before it is time to discuss another deal.
The Bernabeu is the most unforgiving arena in the Champions League, its stunning refurbishment complete with five tiers of stands looking down on City’s demise.
It was a particularly galling night for Guardiola, not simply because the task in front of him was laid out in graphic, gruesome detail before his very eyes, but also because Real Madrid’s fans revelled in his discomfort as a result of his Barcelona allegiances.
Guardiola’s name was met with deafening jeers and whistles when it was read out before kick-off, and when one of the many giant screens captured his despair in close-up after Mbappe’s early strike, a huge roar of delight swept around the stadium.
As City players trooped disconsolately away at the final whistle, some of them perhaps on their way out of this tournament forever with this club, there was no consolation to be had, certainly not from Gonzalez’s late goal.
Manchester City have had a magnificent run. They have lit up domestic and European competition with the quality of their football but this was a night when it looked like their race was run. It is time for change.
The dismissive way they were treated by a Real Madrid side they have regarded as rivals in recent years showed they need new blood to return to that former golden status.
It happens to the best of them and Manchester City were the best of them. Not any more.

Anti-Muslim hate in the UK surged to record levels last year, an organisation tracking Islamophobia has found.
Almost 6,000 reports to Tell Mama were confirmed by it as anti-Muslim incidents, more than double the number two years ago, with men targeted more than women for the first time since the body was founded in 2012.
In its report the organisation said there had been a “surge in rhetoric that falsely portrays Muslims as terrorists or terrorist sympathisers” following the Israel-Gaza conflict and Southport murders.
A government spokesperson called the findings “extremely concerning” and said it would “seek to stamp out anti-Muslim hatred and racism wherever it occurs”.
A total of 6,313 cases of anti-Muslim hate were recorded by Tell Mama in 2024, a 43% increase on the previous year – with 5,837 of the reports verified by the group.
The organisation, which describes itself as the leading agency on monitoring anti-Muslim hate crime, said it had documented a steep rise in offline incidents, with 3,680 cases reported – a 72% increase on the number two years ago.
The majority of the in-person cases were abusive behaviour, with Tell Mama also recording incidents of physical assault, discrimination and vandalism. Most of the attacks took place in public areas such as streets and parks, with a minority occurring in the workplace.
For the first time since Tell Mama’s inception in 2012, more men than women were targeted by anti-Muslim hate and Islamophobia, the organisation said.
Tell Mama said that shift reflected “the deepening impact of harmful stereotypes that fuel societal divisions and reinforces false notions about Muslim identities”.
Anti-Muslim attacks surged in the UK following both the Southport murders last July and the start of the Israel-Gaza conflict in October 2023.
According to the report, more than half of the online incidents of Islamophobia last year took place after three girls were murdered at a dance class in Southport. The majority of these occurred on the social media platform X – formerly known as Twitter.
Following the murders, misinformation about the assailant’s identity proliferated online, fuelling civil unrest that spread across the UK.
Axel Rudakubana, an 18-year-old born in Cardiff to Rwandan parents who had settled in Britain, is serving a minimum 52-year sentence for the murders.
Tell Mama said that there had been a “surge in rhetoric that falsely portrays Muslims as terrorists or terrorist sympathisers” since both the 7 October 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel and the 2024 riots sparked by the Southport murders.
Iman Atta, the group’s director, called for coordinated action by the government and said: “As anti-Muslim hate continues to be felt by a greater number of British Muslims, both at a street and online level, our work and support for victims of anti-Muslim hate is needed now more than ever.”
The public must “stand together against hatred and extremism”, she said, and urged those in positions of influence to “consider how their language risks stereotyping communities and how it unduly influences discussions online and offline”.
In response to the findings, the government said that “attacks on and hatred against Muslim communities are completely unacceptable and have no place in our society”.
A spokesperson added: “We are absolutely determined to bridge divisions between communities and are working closely with community groups, charities, and public sector partners to tackle hatred in all its forms.”

The embattled Member of Parliament of Akwatia North, Ernest Yaw Kumi exited the chamber of Parliament following the issuance of a bench warrant by the Koforidua High Court on Wednesday, February 19,2025.
According to multiple reports, the bench warrant was issued after he failed to appear in court.
The MP had disobeyed an interim injunction issued against him on January 7, 2025, which barred him from being sworn in and admitted as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Akwatia constituency due to an ongoing legal battle over his election.
Presiding Judge, Justice Senyo Amedahe ruled that the convict had consistently failed to appear in court throughout the hearing of the contempt case.
He also dismissed a letter from the Minority caucus in Parliament, which claimed that the MP was occupied with parliamentary duties and, therefore, could not attend court sessions.
The judge rejected the letter, stating that accepting it would contradict his own ruling.

Two persons have died after drowning in the Samre river at Amoaku in the Wassa Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region.
Also, two pregnant women who could not cross the river are on record to have delivered their babies at the brink of the river.
These occurrences are as a result of the collapse of the steel bridge on the river in December 2024.
Assemblyman for ‘Woman No Good’ Electoral Area, Alhaji Azure Suleman, who disclosed this information to 3News.com said that “tragically, we have lost two persons who were trying to cross the river via a makeshift wooden bridge which was constructed by members of the community following the collapse of the main one”.
He mentioned also that, “two pregnant women delivered their babies just at the banks of the river because they could not cross the river to access the Samartex Hospital”.
Accessing the makeshift bridge is a dangerous venture for residents, particularly school children.
Residents of the area who are mainly farmers are also worried that they are not able to cart their food crops to market centers.
Kwasi Anim, a farmer, told this reporter that “it has become impossible to send crops to the market because vehicles can no longer cross the bridge and tricycles that can access the makeshift bridge also can’t carry heavy loads”.
The Samreboi district has consistently maintained its first position on the Ghana Cocoa Board’s highest producer district’s leaderboard for seven consecutive times.
The situation of the bridge will make it difficult for communities such as Woman No Good, Mumuni, Wura Mu Nwansena, Tie Nyame Asem, Torompang, Prestea Nkwanta among others to cart their cocoa in the upcoming crop season.
The assemblyman said, “it will be virtually impossible to cart our cocoa especially when the rains set in because the river will definitely overtop the wooden bridge”.
As a matter of urgency, he wants government to take steps in reconstructing the bridge.
Real Madrid were able to play within themselves after four minutes, Mbappe’s hat-trick completed with superb speed of thought and foot for his second after 33 minutes then low drive just after the hour.
The Bernabeu, surrounded by thousands of fans forming a welcoming committee for Carlo Ancelotti’s side two hours before kick-off, with flares lighting up the Spanish sky and the the smell of cordite in the air, witnessed a procession, a very painful procession for those who travelled from Manchester.
The renewal has started with new faces such as striker Omar Marmoush, who had no service worthy of the name here, and midfielder Nico Gonzalez, as well as 20-year-old defender Abdukodir Khusanov, who suffered as he was pressed into service in an unaccustomed right-back role.
play videoEdem Agbana is the Member of Parliament of Ketu North
The Member of Parliament of Ketu North, Edem Agbana, has called for a non-partisan approach by parliamentarians in addressing the issues facing their constituents and the country as a whole.
Speaking exclusively with GhanaWeb’s George Ayisi, the first-time lawmaker expressed his belief that the interests of citizens should be prioritised above partisan interests, emphasising that this is the primary reason for their election into the house.
He stated that upon taking his oath of office, he committed to representing every individual in his constituency, prioritising their needs over any partisan actions that would not be in their best interest.
He added that lawmakers are elected to represent their constituents, regardless of their party affiliations, and urged them to advocate for reforms that address the issues facing citizens and meet their needs.
“We must always place Ghana first. I am here representing Ketu North on the ticket of the NDC but the very moment I took the oath of office as a member of parliament; I am representing every single person in Ketu North. Whether NDC, NPP, CPP, or APC regardless of their political parties and religious beliefs, I represent the aspirations of the people.
“My hope moving forward is that we will be less partisan in our deliberations and focus more on project Ghana. Issues that affect the people and issues we can voice out which truly represent the needs of the people,” he said.

Realistically, hiking shoes are whatever footwear you’re wearing while hiking. Many people take to the trails in whatever sneakers or hand-me-down boots are around the house. While this can take plenty of beginners pretty far (depending on the terrain), there’s no replacement for a good pair of women’s hiking shoes.
The best women’s hiking shoes are made made for the specific kind of hiking you plan to do. They will also fit your feet so you can fully enjoy your time outside. Hiking shoes are also sometimes a category all their own. They are lighter than hiking boots and don’t feature an ankle collar. They’re also heavier and more durable than trail runners or minimalist hiking shoes. However, we’ve compiled a list of a variety of hiking footwear that is best for women. This way you can find shoes that fit your foot, typical terrain, and hiking style.
How We Tested the Best Women’s Hiking Shoes
OL staff writers, Laura Lancaster, Alice Jones Webb, and I have worn all of the shoes on this list on day hikes, multi-day backpacking trips, and thru-hiking. From minimalist shoes like the Vivobarefoot Primus Trail II FG to the best winter hiking boots like the Danner Arctic 600, we tested a variety of women’s hiking shoes to give you options tailored to your hiking style.
Best Overall: Merrell Moab 3
Pros
Comfortable
Durable
Good for wider feet
Key Features
Weight: 1 pound 10 ounces
Drop: 11.5mm
Lug: 5mm
Merrell Air Cushion heel
Vibram TC5+ outsole
100 percent recycled laces and webbing
Available in a waterproof version
The Moab 3 provides excellent shock absorption and traction while keeping out debris. The Vibram outsole is stable but flexible enough for technical maneuvers. Deep lugs keep traction on anything from slick rock to sand, though fine sediment tends to cling on to the shoe. However, the thick walls, high backs, and bellowed tongue keep the inside of the shoe free from pesky rocks, dirt, and brush. The upper mesh and laces also keep out unwanted debris, even in deep sand.
The Moab’s had great traction on slick rock and sand. Ashley Thess
Last year, I put the Moab 3s through three days of intense durability testing in their namesake location. Dreams of peeling outsoles, ripped mesh, and tearing seams danced in my head as I crawled through tight rocks, stemmed across keeper holes, and stomped through muck, but alas, I failed to destroy this budget beast of a shoe. Instead, I found myself grateful for the intense grip, protective toe, and stellar shock absorption. If the Moab’s held up in Moab, you can count on these in almost any terrain.

Best Zero Drop: Altra Lone Peak 7
Pros
Comparatively low stack height can help prevent ankle rolls
Zero drop can help to strengthen feet (over time) and reduce knee issues
Wide toe box and roomy sizing can help prevent blisters
Cons
Can lead to injury if your feet, ankles, and calves are not sufficiently trained up
Popularity on trail can give the impression that this is a good shoe for everyone
Shorter life span than other picks on this list
Key Features
Neutral support
Less cushioned
Heel Drop: 0mm
Stack Height: 25mm at the heel
Thru-hikers have been singing the praises of Altra Lone Peaks for years, and for good reasons. The Lone Peak is one of the most comfortable trail runners out there. Its wide base (especially the toe box) allows for foot growth and minimizes blisters. It also supports a midfoot or forefoot strike, with all the accompanying ergonomic benefits.
The Altra Lone Peaks started out as the perfect shoe for rocky trails, but eventually proved to be too tall for this barefoot-style hiker. Laura Lancaster
But the Altra Lone Peak is not the hiking shoe for everyone. Its growing dominance on trail is leading to problems. Morgan Brosnihan, a doctor of physical therapy who primarily treats thru-hikers says, in large part due to its popularity, she sees people having more trouble with this shoe than any other. If you are a natural heel striker with limited ankle and toe flexibility, you should avoid this shoe. Start your hike with another trail runner on this list. Even if you do have the strike pattern and foot flexibility to take on this shoe, be sure to exercise your foot and lower legs in it heavily (with a loaded pack) before starting out on trail. Calf strength is essential to avoiding injuries with a shoe like the Altra Lone Peak.
Brosnihan also noted that the Altra Lone Peaks have a shorter life span than other trail runners out there. While several options on this list can make it out to 500 miles, this shoe is really only good for up to 300. Best Transition: Topo Ultraventure 3
Pros
Wide toebox
Moderate cushion
Great heel lock
Cons
Durability in harsh terrain
No wide option
Key Features
Weight: Men’s: 20.8 ounces, Women’s: 16.6 ounces
Stack Height: 25mm
Heel-to-Toe Drop: 5mm
Lug Height: 6mm
Vibram XS Trek EVO rubber outsole
Available in regular only
This trail runner is the perfect bridge from a hiking boot to a lightweight women’s hiking shoe. The wide toebox allows for excellent toe splay, favoring stability and balance on rocky terrain. It breathes easy and the thick lugs and cushioning outsoles make for an extremely comfortable trail runner out of the box. If you’re interested in a minimalist shoe, but concerned about making the jump, this shoe can also be a transition between a hybrid show like the Danner, and a zero drop shoe like the Altra or Vivobarefoot. Its lower stack height and heel drop is just minimalist enough to ease your feet and gait into new footwear, while the heel lock keeps you feeling secure. There is no wide option, but the toe box has a good amount of room.
The replacement Ultraventure 2 sits behind the damaged one. The mesh sustained a large rip after a run in with a branch and there is more ripping on the ankle and outsole. Ashley Thess
If you’re frequenting talus fields or scree-filled slopes, you might run into durability issues. I did 100 miles above alpine in these shoes and came home to rip one on a dirt trail day hike. While I certainly put this shoe through the wringer, it was only 5 months old and in the vicinity of 200 miles. It shouldn’t have damage to the extent noticeable in the photo. However, the Topo team did replace my pair after the rip, and the replacement is still my go-to shoe.
Best Hybrid: Danner Trail 2650 Campo GTX
Pros
Great fit
Protects the foot like a traditional hiking shoe
Fast break-in period
Cons
Heavier than a typical trail runner
Substantial heel-to-drop promotes heel striking
Key Features
Weight: Men’s: 24 ounces, Women’s: 19 ounces
Stack Height: 32mm
Heel-to-Toe Drop: 8mm
Lug Height: 4mm
Vibram 460 outsole
Gore-Tex option
Available in regular and wide
It can be tough to transition from the durability and secure fit of a heavier hiking boot to lightweight trail runners, which aren’t always built for the heavy loads some backpackers carry. In preparation for an upcoming thru-hike, one tester took the Danner Trail Campo 2650 GTX on a series of day hikes that totaled fifty miles around Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky. She found that the integrated tongue of the shoe improved the overall fit, locking her heel into place and giving her the stability she was accustomed to from hiking shoes. Strategically placed leather panels on the upper also helped protect her toes and Achilles area, while the ventilation in the Gore-Tex kept her feet from overheating.
But they were more akin to trail runners when it came to comfort, “I did not have to break them in at all — they felt great on the first hike,” she reported. —Laura Lancaster
A minimal shoe that can take on a variety of conditions.
Pros
Short stack height and zero heel drop make this a true barefoot shoe
Durable lugs and reinforced upper
Cons
The upper requires some break-in
Does not provide as much ground feedback as others
Key Features
Weight: Men’s: 18.4 ounces, Women’s: 15.7 ounces
Stack Height: 6.5mm
Heel-to-Toe Drop: None
Lug Height: 4mm
Firm ground outsole
Available in regular only (although they run wide)
Most minimalist trail runners are breezy, barely-there affairs, with only the thinnest membrane between your feet and the ground. While that works well for low-key trail runs, the Vivobarefoot Primus FG can tackle more challenging backcountry conditions like slickrock, volcanic pumice, or the scorching desert floor at midday.
The Vivobarefoot Primus FGs ended up being the perfect shoe for my thru-hike of the 450-mile Colorado Trail. Laura Lancaster
I wore these women’s hiking shoes on a thru-hike of the Colorado Trail and was impressed by their durability. At the end of the trip, there were no holes in the upper and the seam at the feather edge was intact. While the lugs were worn to a nub at the forefoot, there were no significant signs of wear on the outsole itself. Despite being on the heavy side (although still substantially lighter than a standard trail runner), the Primus FG still performed like a minimalist shoe and promoted a mid-foot to forefoot strike that kept my foot low enough to the ground to negate any concerns of ankle roll. They also dried fast after stream crossings.
One word of caution is that this shoe should only be worn on the trail by people already accustomed to minimalist footwear, as an undeveloped arch is at risk of developing plantar fasciitis without the support of a standard trail runner or hiking shoe. —Laura Lancaster
Sturdy, reliable, and comfortable, with major improvements from previous models.
Pros
Comfortable
Improved stability from previous models
Excellent traction in wet, slippery conditions
Cons
Can feel heavy
Narrow toe box doesn’t allow the foot to splay naturally
Key Features
Weight: Men’s: 20.6 ounces, Women’s: 17 ounces
Stack Height: 32mm
Heel-to-Toe Drop: 4mm
Lug Height: 5mm
Vibram Megagrip outsole
Gore-Tex option
Available in regular and wide
The substantial cushion on the Hoka Speedgoat 5 will catch your eye immediately. This feature makes these women’s hiking shoes the go-to for a wide range of people, from day hikers to trail runners to thru-hikers. But the stack height belies the mild heel-to-drop on this shoe, which promotes a mid-foot strike (as opposed to a heel strike), which lessens the impact on the rest of your body — especially if you’re carrying a heavy load down a steep trail.
Compared to previous versions of the Speedgoat, the 5s have slightly less cushion but are substantially more stable. An OL staff member noted that, in combination with the Vibram outsole and 5mm lugs, these shoes were excellent on their state’s varying terrain. Whether backpacking or trail running, “from solid trail to steep skree fields … my foot felt secure and supported,” they said. —Laura Lancaster
Vibram Ground Control LiteBase with Megagrip Compound outsole
Mesh upper is made of suede and 70 percent post-consumer recycled materials
With a narrow, snug fit, this low-drop women’s hiking shoe is great for hikers unwilling to sacrifice stability for less weight. The stiff style and uncompromising sole give the hiker control and confidence while still offering a light and breathable feel thanks to the mesh and thin suede upper. The waterproof technology is called Nature-Tex and utilizes 50 percent recycled materials. It is one of the most waterproof shoes I’ve ever worn with no leakage, even around the laces while submerged. I stood in a creek as deep as I could go without allowing water to flow over the ankle for a few minutes and my feet stayed completely dry.
While my feet got chilly standing in this stream, they did stay completely dry. Ashley Thess
While hiking I felt protected and secure in the Breeze LT NTX. The shoes only weigh 1 pound and 5 ounces, but they are designed to be durable and withstand the elements. These will certainly last a long time with proper care. If you prefer a hiking shoe that hugs every part of your foot, the Breeze is just right. While the Breeze is slender throughout, the tight space for your heel to fit caused a real problem by stiffly and aggressively rubbing the back of my foot

Best Budget: Fila Firetrail EVO
Pros
Affordable
Wide toe box
Durable
Breathable upper
Cons
Heavy
Not available for wide feet
Not water-resistant
Key Features
Weight: 20 ounces
Aggressive lugs
EVA midsole
Rubber outsole
Synthetic and mesh upper
In the world of hiking shoes, it is generally true that you get what you pay for. In most cases, you should be prepared to invest if you want high-quality, comfortable, and durable hiking shoes. However, Fila’s Firetrail EVO hiking shoes are proof that you don’t have to drop a ton of cash in exchange for decent hikers. While this budget-friendly footwear isn’t built for thru-hiking, it has served me well on hundreds of trail miles in a dozen different states. The shoes have traversed everything from beach sand to boulders, and the outsole and the uppers have both held up remarkably well.
The breathable upper of the Fila Firetrail EVO was a welcome feature in the Arizona summer heat.
The breathable mesh upper prevents soggy, sweaty feet on hot hikes. Unfortunately, that breathability comes at a cost. The Firetrail isn’t water-resistant, which leaves your feet exposed to exterior moisture. Even a march through dew-soaked grass will leave your socks feeling like a swamp. The shoes also don’t dry out quickly, so once saturated, they will stay that way until you can get them propped by a campfire. These women’s hiking shoes are definitely made for fair weather. — Alice Jones Webb
Best Winter Hiking Boot: Danner Arctic 600
Pros
Best traction on ice in my test
Very warm
Side zip allows for easy on and off
Cons
Side zip represents a point of failure
Key Features
Sizes: Men’s 7-14 (wide available); women’s 5-11
Outsole: Vibram Nisqually Arctic Grip
Insulation: 200g Primaloft Gold
Danner Dry liner
The Danner Arctic 600 performed exceptionally well on every test I threw at it. The Vibram Arctic Grip outsole (in combination with this shoe’s lug design) was extremely impressive. The stickiness of the traction meant I could barely tell I was walking on ice — it was almost impossible to slip with these shoes. Similarly this shoe stayed warmer than every other boot in my test while standing in the early spring runoff of the Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie River, and no moisture made its way into the boot. I did note, however, that this boot was the coldest at the side zipper.
The flexible upper of the Danner Arctic 600 provided plenty of protection when postholing.
The Danner Arctic 600’s side zipper was an unusual feature among the boots that I tried. While putting on and taking off boots seemingly every fifteen minutes, I appreciated that I could put on and remove these shoes without having to untie and retie the laces.
The side zip of the Danner Arctic 600 allows for easy on and off, but it also represents a point of failure on the boot.
But as everyone who spends time outdoors knows, zippers represent a significant failure point on just about any piece of gear — and that goes double for waterproof zippers like those on the Arctic 600. If you are concerned about the long-term durability of the zipper (and I would be), consider not using this feature on a day-to-day basis.
How to Choose the Best Women’s Hiking Shoes
Ankle Support
It turns out that the upper of a hiking boot does not help prevent ankle rolling — it’s actually the firmness of the base that does this. If you’re thinking about switching to a hiking shoe from a hiking boot, you can test this by trying to twist the base of the shoe. If it moves, it won’t provide as much ankle support.
Arch Support
On long hikes or backpacking trips, it’s common for the arch of the foot to become fatigued, which can lead to plantar fasciitis. A common cause of this, especially among day hikers and backpackers, is overpronation, where the foot leans or collapses inward. Anyone experiencing this, or suffering from pain while they walk might benefit from an insole for their hiking shoes like Superfeet (individuals with exceptionally strong arches may prefer a Currex insole).
Shoe Size
With hiking shoes, it’s important that there’s some space between your toes and the end of the shoe—aim for about a finger’s width of space between the end of your toes and the tip of the shoe. For most people, that will work to about a half size larger than they typically wear. However, Kelley cautions that many people, especially women, rely on shoe sizings that they received when they were younger, and don’t take into account the natural growth of the foot over time. Getting your foot sized by a professional—something you can do through REI’s Virtual Outfitting without visiting a store—is an important part of choosing a hiking shoe.
Traction
Traditionally, one of the most important differences between trail runners and hiking shoes was the size of the lugs. But today, there are a number of trail runners on the market with substantial lugs that mirror the functionality of traditional hiking shoes or boots.
Durability
One important difference between hiking shoes and trail runners is durability. Hiking shoes typically last for 500 to 700 miles, while trail runners only last 300 to 500 miles. Factors that can affect this include the durability of the rubber, the sole, the midsole, and the uppers (leather vs. mesh), as well as the weight of the person wearing the shoes and the conditions they frequent. —Laura Lancaster
FAQs
Q: How do I keep my feet from hurting while hiking?
Buying a pair of the best women’s hiking shoes is a good way to avoid foot pain while hiking. Try on multiple pairs and walk around in them, test them on inclines and other uneven surfaces. If you’re still having foot pain, one of the best insoles for hiking could help. Sometimes it is also wise to buy a half to a whole size up from your normal shoe size as intense activity like hiking can make your feet swell.
Q: Is it OK to wear hiking shoes for walking?
Yes. Hiking shoes are great for walking if you’re looking for extra support and durability. However, keep in mind that this will wear out your hiking shoes faster.
Q: Are running shoes good enough for hiking?
Sometimes, yes, but not all running shoes are the same. Trail runners are frequently used for hiking and backpacking. They’re made for trails and can typically handle the terrain. Plenty of hikers and backpackers opt for trail runners as their go-to hiking shoe. Running shoes designed for a track or pavement are just fine for plenty of hikes, but it may not provide the traction and durability necessary for slick or very uneven terrain. These shoes won’t protect your foot as well from rocks or rain, and it will wear out much faster than one of the shoes on this list.
Final Thoughts on the Best Women’s Hiking Shoes
The best women’s hiking shoes can help you hike farther, more comfortably. From winter boots to minimalist shoes, there’s a variety of quality hiking shoes to choose from. You should always try on shoes if possible before committing to wearing them on a long hike. Some of the women’s hiking shoes on this list are comfortable out of the box like the Merrel Moab 3 and others will need to be broken in like the Vasque Breeze. But there’s a hiking shoe for you on this list:

The High Court in Accra has imposed a GH¢3,000 cost on Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for omitting a crucial witness in a defamation case.
Former Auditor-General Professor Edward Dua Agyeman sued Asiedu Nketiah, also known as General Mosquito, for defamation in 2018, seeking GH¢20 million in damages.
The court, presided over by Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, granted Asiedu Nketiah’s request to amend his pre-trial checklist to include the omitted “necessary witness.” However, the court imposed the GH¢3,000 cost due to the oversight.
Court proceedings
On February 19, 2025, Tonny Nyarko, counsel for Asiedu Nketiah, moved a motion to amend their earlier processes.
“My Lady, we have an application for leave to amend the pre-trial checklist, which was filed on February 13, 2025, and is fixed for hearing today (February 19, 2025),” he said.
“We move in terms of the motion paper and the supporting affidavit, together with the attached exhibits,” Counsel submitted.
Relying on all depositions contained in their affidavit, he stated that on October 29, 2024, they had filed a notice of subpoena for Brian Anku Sapati.
“At the last court sitting, our attention was drawn to the fact that we inadvertently excluded Brian Anku Sapati from our pre-trial checklist, even though he is a necessary witness in this matter,” Counsel submitted.
In light of this, he explained, “We filed the present application for leave to amend the pre-trial checklist pursuant to Order 16, Rule 7 of C.I. 47, which pertains to the amendment of other documents.”
“We submit that the amendment is made in good faith and is necessary to enable the applicant (Asiedu Nketiah) to present the entirety of his case before this court, aligning with the requirements of the court’s case management procedures,” Nyarko stated.
He further argued that the application would not take the plaintiff, Prof. Dua Agyeman, by surprise since a notice of subpoena was already on record.
“In these circumstances, we pray this court to grant us leave to amend the pre-trial checklist in terms of Exhibit ‘J1,’” Counsel for the NDC Chairman pleaded.
Nana Bayin Ackon, holding brief for Gary Nimako Marfo, stated, “We have nothing to say,” adding, “We leave it to the determination of the court.”
Court ruling
After listening to both parties, Her Ladyship Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay granted the request for leave but awarded a cost of GH¢3,000 against Asiedu Nketia.
“The application is granted as prayed,” the court ruled.
“The applicant is given seven (7) days to file,” the court stated, adding, “A cost of GH¢3,000 is awarded against the defendant/applicant (Asiedu Nketiah) in favor of the plaintiff/respondent (Prof. Edward Dua Agyeman).”
The case has been adjourned to April 3, 2025, for continuation.
Neither Prof. Edward Dua Agyeman (plaintiff) nor Johnson Asiedu Nketiah (defendant) was present in court.
Reliefs sought
Prof. Dua Agyeman is asking the court to declare that the defendant’s publication on Neat FM, claiming he was banned by the Institute of Chartered Accountants (Ghana) for producing fake audited accounts for a non-existent company, is slanderous and defamatory.
He asserts that the statement was made without any reasonable, just, or probable cause.
Additionally, he seeks a declaration that the defendant’s claim on Neat FM that “Dua Agyeman concocted fake audit reports concerning some senior officers, which led to their dismissal from public service” is defamatory.
Prof. Dua Agyeman is also requesting a declaration that the defendant’s assertion on Neat FM that he was dismissed from the Audit Service due to dishonesty is slanderous and defamatory.
He is further seeking:
• An order of injunction restraining the defendant, his agents, assigns, and privies from making further defamatory statements about him.
• A court order directing the defendant to retract the defamatory publication and render an unqualified apology with the same prominence on Neat FM and in four editions of the Daily Graphic.
• General and compensatory damages amounting to GH¢20 million for loss of reputation.

Na so im add say im give im appointees up to 31 March to declare dia own asset or dem go face punishment wia fit include sacking from office.
Public officials gatz publish dia assets afta dem declare am to di auditor
Sabi pipo don chook mouth for di mata about asset declaration.
Currently, di law don tok say pesin gat to complete and submit written declaration of all dia property or assets wia dem get directly or indirectly on top on form, to di auditor general.

Enoch Godongwana has suffered a major blow after the coalition deadlocked over his budget
South Africa’s Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has been forced to postpone the unveiling of the national budget following sharp disagreements within the coalition government.
Coalition partners derailed his budget after opposing his plan to raise value-added-tax (VAT), which would have seen the prices of goods go up at a time when South Africans are hard-hit by the cost-of-living crisis.
Godongwana is a member of the African National Congress (ANC), which was forced to enter into a coalition after losing its parliamentary majority in elections last year.
His failure to table the budget sent shockwaves in South Africa, as it has never happened since the end of white-minority rule in 1994.
The currency plummeted against the US dollar, as markets reacted negatively to the news.
The Democratic Alliance (DA), which is the second-biggest party in the coalition, was one of the most vocal critics of the proposed budget.
Its leader John Stenhuisen said the party could not in “good conscience” agree to a VAT increase from 15% to 17% as it would have “broken back the back of our economy”.
VAT was last increased in 2018 from 14% to 15%.
The ANC’s other coalition partners, like the Freedom Front Plus, said they were only told of the proposed hike before Godongwana was due to table the budget.
Godongwana told journalists that the planned increase was mentioned in the cabinet last week.
The budget will now be tabled on 12 March, following further discussions to iron out differences, he said.
The opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) expressed dismay over the postponement, saying it was a “symptom of weak, indecisive, and opportunistic governance”.
But the DA hailed the postponement as a “victory”, and said it would push for a budget that is “better for growth and employment”.

Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi [L] and legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu
After being found guilty of contempt of court, Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, has been urged by private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu to step down in order to prevent future humiliation of the court.
Kpebu claims that Mr. Kumi’s willful disobedience of a court order and his subsequent activities have damaged the judiciary’s reputation, which could lead to a harsh punishment.
This comes after the Koforidua High Court issued an arrest order for the MP on charges of contempt of court. After Mr. Kumi intentionally disregarded an interim injunction that forbade him from appearing to be sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, the court, presided over by Justice Senyo Amedahe, declared him guilty.
In spite of the court’s directive, Kumi proceeded to be sworn in and has continued to hold himself out as an MP.
Following Mr. Kumi’s absence at sentence, the court issued a bench warrant for his arrest after determining that he had disregarded its orders.
On Wednesday, February 19, 2025, Martin Kpebu stressed on Eyewitness News that Mr. Kumi’s conduct were a flagrant disregard for the court and might result in a severe verdict.
In order to prevent more legal repercussions and public humiliation, he suggested that the MP step down right away.
“He can only continue to hold himself if the sentence is mild. I say so because I am trying to imagine, how will the judge give him a life sentence when he clearly brought the authority of the court into such great disrepute. Because there was a court order, he ignored it and he kept going to parliament and holding himself as a member of parliament, this is really tough.
“Because if we are using the normal measures, the judge may say that he is going to four years or the rest of the term of parliament, though it is harsh to give. Otherwise, how will the judge go to restore the authority of the court? The judge will likely not give a sentence of less than one month for him to serve that term and come back to continue in parliament.
“It will make a mockery of the proceedings. So, unless something else happens behind the scenes. He really has to resign if he wants to avoid the situation of continuing to embarrass the court,” he stated.
Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, said the caucus will take action to make sure Ernest Yaw Kumi, the MP for Akwatia, abides by the law.
Speaking to the media, Afenyo-Markin called the court’s order unjust and inadequate, adding that before an official position is formed on the issue, leadership has not yet received a copy of the court’s decision and related orders.

After a customer who got into a pricing dispute with her hairstylist, the beautician hopped on the woman’s car as she drove off. A woman who goes by “Rebailious Roze” visited Lasting Impressions Salon Suites with her daughter last Saturday.
Videos by Wide Open Country
Little did they know that getting their hair done at this Alabama salon would turn nasty. Roze confronted the hairstylist after her daughter left the appointment in tears. The young girl was upset that her hair didn’t look like the reference photo she showed Kamiya A. Yates, the hairstylist.
Roze claimed that Yates gave her “attitude” when she asked about the terrible hairdo. The mother shared this experience on Facebook saying that Yates “did what she wanted to do.”
Hairstylist Clings Onto Roof Of Customer’s Car After Pay Dispute
“I told her that I’m not going to argue with her and I walked out,” Roze wrote in the post. By the time she left the building, Yates ran after her saying she owed her money for “coming in early.” Earlier in the post, Roze claimed that the stylist came 30 minutes late without offering any apology.

When the mother refused to pay the $30 deposit, Yates threatened to call the cops on her. As soon as Roze got in the car and reversed, Yates hopped on the back and held tight.
Roze continued to explain how Yates was “totally disrespectful” on top of jumping on her car and causing a dent in it. When speaking to WKRG, the mother confirmed that she wasn’t “driving crazy because, you know, I don’t want her to actually fall off of the car.”
The outlet reported that the wild car ride only lasted around two minutes before she pulled up to a gas station. Luckily, the ordeal didn’t leave anyone injured.
Things got messier when Roze pulled over and noticed another lady pulling up and getting angry with her. “she doesn’t even know the situation but she’s calling me a stupid b***h,” she continued. Roze claimed that the stranger threatened her life by saying “if she had her purse that she would’ve shot me.”
In response to the bizarre incident, the owner of the Salon, Talisha Washington, sent WKRG a statement. “Lasting Impressions Salon Suites operates with integrity and professionalism. We do not partake in any negative activity, and our brand is dedicated to helping business owners grow in a professional manner. The situation regarding the tenant has been addressed and resolved appropriately. We remain committed to providing a positive and professional environment for all business owners.”

Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, has revealed that some politicians are actively involved in illegal mining (galamsey), making efforts to combat the menace even more challenging.
Speaking on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV, the minister expressed deep concerns over the role of political figures in the galamsey industry, stating that their involvement has significantly hindered the government’s efforts to address the issue.
He also pointed out the withdrawal of security forces from galamsey-prone areas in 2022, a decision he believes worsened the situation.
“There’s no denying the fact that politicians are engaged in galamsey… It’s shocking to note that as of 2022, the state had taken a decision to withdraw security forces who were preventing people from engaging in galamsey in all galamsey areas.”
Murtala Muhammed expressed the government’s commitment to win the illegal mining fight, adding that their talks are not rhetoric.
He mentioned that they have put in place measures to stop galamsey with the introduction of planting trees.
“No [rethoric], we want to do less talking and much work. I can tell you what we’re doing is profound. Some of the things I can’t put out there. I had some engagement today, [Wednesday, February 19] with some organisations and institutions to see how we can stop galamsey and at the same time restore the water bodies.”
He assured that Ghanaians will see changes in the galamsey fight in a few months.
“By the will of God, within some few months, the people of Ghana will see some drastic changes as far as our water bodies and galmsey are concerned.”
