How Ghanaians reacted to Michael Blackson blaming NPP government for Eurobond woes

Ghanaian-born American comedian Michael Blackson’s revelation about losing part of his $1.2 million Eurobond investment due to Ghana’s debt restructuring program has sparked widespread outrage on social media.

In a recent interview on Vlad TV, Michael Blackson explained that his investment, intended to fund a free school he established in Agona Nsabaa, was affected by the government’s 2024 Eurobond debt exchange program.

He apologised for initially blaming Ghana and rather directed the blames at the NPP administration for his loss.

Following this heart-wrenching revelation, scores of Ghanaians have expressed anger and disappointment on social media, directing their frustrations at the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) government led by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

They have expressed sympathy for the actor and accused the NPP of corruption and mismanagement.

One user lamented, “DDEP was and remains the biggest evil a country has ever done to its citizens. My money remains at Databank!” Another added, “The crazy thing is how not one single debt was actually paid, so the money was really lost.”

“Any follower and avid supporter of the NPP has the potential to do worse than this in the future. Know them now and protect this country from such scavengers,” another comment read.

“Investing in education and giving back to the community is admirable, and it’s heartbreaking to see such efforts hindered by corruption. Hope he finds a way to recover from this setback,” a user wrote.

Some called for accountability, with one person asking, “Can he sue the former administration? If somebody was going to get him his money back, it means it’s possible for the government to do it, but they chose not to, turning it into an opportunity for corrupt officials to benefit. Evil regime.”

Leaders must be prepared for accountability

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to accountability and responsible leadership, urging public officials to recognize the weight of the trust placed in them by the people.

Speaking during an engagement with the Ghanaian community in Ethiopia on Monday, February 17, 2025, he emphasized that those in leadership must lead by example and be willing to answer to the citizens they serve.

“Those of us in leadership must lead by example. We must be prepared to be held accountable for the public trust,” President Mahama stated.

“If you accept a role in the public sector, then you must be prepared to answer to the people because it is the people who put you there. You serve at their pleasure.”

He acknowledged the excitement surrounding new appointments but cautioned that every public office comes with significant responsibility.

“Everybody is excited and running—‘Have you got a green letter from the president?’ The green letter comes. But the green letter comes with a lot of responsibility and expectation,” he added.

President John Dramani Mahama also stressed that while his administration will hold past leaders accountable, it is equally important for current officials to recognize that they, too, will be judged by their actions.

“And I have said that while we hold those who came before us accountable, we should remember that we, too, will be held to account in the same way,” he noted.

Outlining his administration’s priorities, he emphasised constitutional amendments, strengthening public trust, stabilizing the economy, and creating job opportunities for young people.

He acknowledged that while the process of reform may not be completed during his tenure, laying a solid foundation for future leaders remains his goal.

“And so, amending the constitution, holding people accountable for the public trust, and ensuring we stabilize the economy and create opportunities for our young people to work as quickly as possible—that is the task ahead of us,” he said.

“We may not be able to complete the process, but at the very least, I am determined to lay the foundation and put Ghana on the right track so that whoever takes over can continue and consolidate it,” President Mahama affirmed.

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

Ministers of Finance and the Central Bank Governors of African Union (AU) Member States have endorsed the draft statute for establishing the African Monetary Institute (AMI), as part of an effort to boost the continent’s financial and economic integration.

This is through the Specialised Technical Committee on Finance, Monetary Affairs, Economic Planning, and Integration.

President John Dramani Mahama, who is the Champion of African Union (AU) Financial Institutions, disclosed his keynote address at the Heads of State and Government breakfast dialogue held at the AU Commission headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The event on the theme, “Africa at the forefront: Mobilizing African Investment and Financing for Implementing Agenda 2063”, was held on the sidelines of the AU Summit, under the auspices of the Alliance of African Multilateral Financing Institutions, also called the African Club.

The President said the AMI would serve as a precursor to the African Central Bank and will carry out essential preparatory work, including technical and legal assessments, as well as ensuring the implementation of macroeconomic convergence criteria.

He noted that the AMI awaits further consideration and adoption by the heads of state and government through the AU policy organs.

“Similarly, the African Monetary Fund, the AMF, supports macroeconomic stability, which is crucial for investor confidence,” he said.

He said the African Investment Bank was also a pivoter in funding infrastructure projects such as energy, transport, digital transformation, while the Pan-African Stock Exchange was envisaged to integrate capital markets, making it easier for businesses to raise capital and thereby enhancing liquidity, promoting intra-African investments, and providing alternative financing mechanisms for governments and the private sector.

He said progress was being made towards the establishment of this exchange, with the Commission and the African Security Exchanges Association working on the exchange’s linkages project.

He noted that this initiative also aims to enhance liquidity and facilitate capital mobilization across African nations.

President Mahama said accelerating the implementation of the African Union Financial Institutions, namely the African Central Bank, the African Investment Bank, and the African.

The Monetary Fund and the Pan-African Stock Exchange were instrumental in fostering investments and financing to achieve their objectives.

He said that mobilising resources, facilitating trade, and financing infrastructure projects, could reduce dependence on external aid and create a self-sustaining economic ecosystem for Africa.

He said the African Central Bank was aimed at establishing a single African currency, which would help to reduce exchange rate risks and enhance investment flows across the continent.

“We encourage more African stock exchanges to join this important project. Undeniably, strong political will and effective policy coordination are going to be crucial for the successful implementation and overall impact of the African Union financial institutions,” he said.

President Mahama said Ghana continues to champion and advocate for member states to embark on due processes at the national levels to expedite the establishment of these institutions, recognizing their significance in promoting investments and financing the AU Agenda 2063.

“While we have made significant strides, the journey ahead requires unwavering commitment,” he said.

“I call upon all our governments, our private sector, our civil society organisations, and development partners to renew their commitment to mobilizing resources for our continental blueprint on development. “Let us leverage our collective strengths, foster strategic partnerships, and champion innovative solutions to bridge the financing and investment gaps in Africa.”

Adding that, “the Africa we envision, a continent that is integrated, prosperous and peaceful, is within our reach”.

Adding that by mobilizing their resources, reforming their financial systems, and investing in their people, they could realize the laudable aspirations of creating the Africa they want, their Agenda 2063.

Elmina Sharks’ Jay Asamoah Kola faces potential 2-5 year ban for punching a referee

Elmina Sharks midfielder Jay Asamoah Kola Elmina Sharks midfielder Jay Asamoah Kola

Elmina Sharks’ midfielder Jay Asamoah Kola is facing between two to five-year ban for his violent conduct against a referee during a league match in Ghana.

Asamoah Kola, restricted to the substitute bench, threw caution to the wind to brazenly attack the centre referee after his side’s 1-0 defeat at home to in-form Zone Three leaders Swedru All Blacks, in the country’s second-tier league.

Video footage show an irate footballer throwing missiles targeted at the referee with violence against match officials becoming an increasing problem in Ghanaian football, as attacks on those trying to implement the laws of the game grow.

The midfielder could face a prolonged period away from the pitch with the Football Association set to hand down severe punishment to the player to serve as a deterrent, according to GHANAsoccernet.com.

The incident has sparked a wave of concerns as calls for stiffer punishment for the player grows incessant.

But for Eso Doh Morrison’s firm gravity, the match official would have fallen to the ground after the hefty blow from the footballer.

The club has also been charged for failing to control their players and fans and have up until Tuesday, February 18, 2025, to respond to the charge.

While the home fans were left angered by the decision of the referee, video footage has revealed the match official made a well-judged penalty decision.

The incident comes at a time when Ghanaian football is under scrutiny following the tragic stabbing of Asante Kotoko fan Nana Yaw Frimpong, better known as ‘Pooley’ in Nsoatre, which led to the suspension of the Ghana Premier League and the introduction of new matchday security reforms.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is expected to take a firm stance on the matter as part of efforts to restore discipline and safety in the domestic league.

Council Of State Polls: Nana Boadu’s Team Demands Venue Change

Nana Obuor Sika (2nd left) with some members of the campaign team

The campaign team of Nana Nkansah Boadu Ayeboafo wants the Electoral Commission (EC) to change the venue for today’s re-run of the Council of State election from the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to a neutral venue to ensure free, fair and transparent elections devoid of violence.

The group is also calling for the deployment of the military to boost security at the election premises, to ward off any thugs or machomen who may be harbouring plans of disrupting the election process today, Monday, February 17, 2025.

It will be recalled that the election of the region’s representative to the Council of State turned chaotic on Tuesday, February 11, when some machomen stormed the election grounds and disrupted the process, destroying ballot papers and boxes.

Five journalists who were filming the incident for their reports were beaten pitilessly. The victims include Gideon Nana Peprah, GhanaWeb; Akwasi Oppong, Angel FM; Kofi Adade, Oyerepa Radio/TV, Henry Kotei Henry, Oseikrom Dawuro newspaper, and Charles Awuah Mensah alias Papa That, Lawson FM/TV.

They were beaten in the presence of the police while the ballot papers were being sorted and counted by the electoral officers.

The campaign team manager, Nana Obuor Sika, in a press conference on Friday, February 14, claimed that the police deployed to the initial election failed to control the confusion that erupted at the RCC, hence the need for the deployment of military personnel to ensure violence-free process today.

“It is just so shameful having over 100 policemen and women who could not superintend over just 86 votes to be counted and results declared. What then is the assurance that come Monday (today), if this same people (police) are going to superintend the elections, we can have a smooth running of the elections? So I think this time, the military and all other forces must join hands, so that we can have a very clean, fair and violent-free elections,” he explained.

Nana Obuor Sika continued, “Our message is very clear: We are for the re-run on Monday (today), but we are not going to allow the elections to be held at RCC, and we are calling on the military and other security agencies to join forces with the police on Monday, so that we can have a very violent-free elections.”

He explained that the RCC is not neutral enough to serve as venue for the election, considering it being the official seat of the Regional Minister, Dr.  Frank Amoakohene, stressing that the election can easily be manipulated in favour of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s candidate, Yaw Owusu Obimpeh.

Nana Obour Sika also indicated that, they will resist any attempt by the Electoral Commission to change the voter register for the elections to favour one candidate.

“We are hearing from the various MMDAs in the Ashanti Region that, as we speak, there are swearing-in of new members who are going to form the government appointees, so that they can use those swearing-in members to tamper with the register.

“What we want to ask is that, what does the law say if there is going to be a re-run of elections? Does the law say the very register or the very album which was used for the elections could be tampered with the new register?  We are now calling on the Electoral Commission to do the needful.  There is no law that states that the album can be tampered.  The elections was held on Tuesday, and per what happened, there is the need for re-run as they have advised accordingly.  We have the total list of the 86 Assembly members who voted on that day, and that is what we all have to go by,” he indicated.

Accra, Feb 17, GNA-Care for Society Network International (CfSNI) a not-for-profit organisation has organised a training for senior high school girls at Kibi Secondary Technical School on self-confidence to shun peer pressure.

The workshop was under a project called “Obaa Nhweso Initiative” which sought to mentor and nurture young students on the need to progress in their academic pursuits and avoid teenage pregnancies and dropping out of school.

Mrs Anita Ampofoa Amoako-Gyimah, Founder of CfSNI indicated that building a strong foundation and an ethical society was in the values instilled in young girls who would become future adults.

By helping young girls identify their potentials and understand the importance of self-confidence through such trainings “we’re not just shaping individuals, but influencing the future of our communities”.

She said due to gender stereotypes which had influenced some long-held perceptions about girls’ education, mentoring and nurturing them was critical to achieving gender-equality.

She also observed that the rise of social media had amplified the pressures young girls faced, often leading to insecurity and self-doubt, which reinforced the need for such education.

The participants were taken through practical strategies to help them to build resilience, withstand peer pressure, set meaningful goals, and maintain focus to go through the academic ladder.

The interactive sessions encouraged the girls to identify their strengths, overcome their fears, and develop healthy relations to foster personal growth.

One of the participants Ama a 16-year-old girl said the experience was transformative. “I used to doubt myself a lot, especially when I faced challenges. But now, I tell myself, ‘I am determined’ every day, and it gives me the courage to keep pushing,” she said.
