Ghanaians must learn to support local artists – Stonebwoy states

0

Ghanaian dancehall star Stonebwoy has expressed frustration over the constant negativity he faces from some Ghanaians, particularly on social media.

Speaking candidly on the Afrobeats Podcast, the award-winning musician emotionally addressed how a lighthearted moment on TikTok Live with Nigerian influencer Peller spiraled into unnecessary controversy back home.

Stonebwoy described the situation as “heartbreaking,” emphasizing that such a mentality should no longer exist among Ghanaians in 2025.

He recounted how the interaction with Peller was entirely unplanned. While on a live session thanking fans for their support, the young influencer joined the stream.

“I didn’t even recognize the name at first. I declined twice before finally accepting. Then we started vibing. I saw an opportunity to turn it into a promotional moment, so I joked about flying him to London,” Stonebwoy explained.

What was intended to be a fun and engaging moment quickly turned sour as some Ghanaians took to social media to criticize the interaction.

Stonebwoy lamented that instead of capitalizing on the positive energy, he and his team had to spend time defending the moment, ultimately losing its momentum.

“Instead of pushing the moment forward, we now have to defend it. And by the time we finish defending, the momentum is lost,” he said.

This incident is not the first time Stonebwoy has faced unwarranted criticism from his compatriots.

He recalled a similar situation at the Grammys, where he introduced himself to a global star, only to be ridiculed by some Ghanaians instead of being celebrated for seizing a networking opportunity.

“It’s interesting how the negative narrative always becomes more popular. That’s the sad part. We should be elevating our own people, not dragging them down,” he emphasized.

Stonebwoy’s comments highlight a broader issue within Ghana’s entertainment industry, where artists often face harsh criticism and negativity from their own people, even as they strive to put the country on the global map.

He urged Ghanaians to change their mindset and rally behind their artists, noting that every positive step taken by a Ghanaian artist benefits the entire music industry and the nation as a whole.

“We should be supportive of our own. When we win, Ghana wins,” he stated.

Aflao Traditional Council thanks President Mahama, others for supporting tidal wave victims

The Aflao Traditional Council has expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for his swift and compassionate response to the plight of some Ketu South residents affected by recent devastating tidal waves.

The President, immediately after delivering his Independence Day Anniversary speech in Accra on Thursday, traveled to Agavedzi, one of the coastal communities in Ketu South hardest hit by the recurring menace, to inspect the damage and present some items to alleviate the suffering of the victims.

Accompanying the President were his younger brother and Managing Director of Engineers and Planners, Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, and Mr. Kwame Governs Agbodza, Minister of Roads and Highways, among others, who also made donations to support the tidal wave victims.

In a release on Saturday, March 8, signed by its President and Paramount Chief of Aflao, Torgbui Adzonugaga Amenya Fiti V, the Council stated that Mr. Mahama’s decision to leave the March 6 parade to personally visit and console the victims was a true demonstration of leadership, empathy, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of Ghanaians.

“His presence reassured the affected communities that they are not alone in this tough time and that their voices are heard.

We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Ibrahim Mahama for his exceptional generosity in donating GH¢100,000 to support the victims. This is yet another testament to his remarkable humanitarian spirit, which extends far beyond the shores of Ghana. His kindness and dedication to helping those in distress continue to inspire hope and bring relief to countless lives.”

“Furthermore, we acknowledge with deep appreciation the contribution of Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza, who has provided 250 bags of rice to support affected families. We are equally grateful to all individuals, organizations, and well-meaning Ghanaians who have come forward in many ways to provide relief. These acts of kindness embody the spirit of unity, compassion, and shared responsibility that define us as a people,” the release added.

The statement also reminded the public that “while these immediate relief efforts bring comfort, we must not lose sight of the urgent need for a lasting solution to the recurring coastal erosion crisis,” which has recently displaced hundreds of people and destroyed livelihoods.

“We therefore use this opportunity to appeal for more support from the government, corporate bodies, development partners, and philanthropists to provide both emergency assistance and long-term measures to protect our vulnerable coastal communities.”

“In this moment of adversity, let us stand together in solidarity, extending a helping hand to those in need. The Aflao Traditional Council remains committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure that our people receive the support they deserve,” the release concluded.

‘Ghanaians are football mad’ – Former Black Stars coach Chris Hughton

Chris Hughton has admitted that managing Ghana came with intense scrutiny, acknowledging the passionate nature of the country’s football fans.

The former Nottingham Forest manager was appointed after the 2022 World Cup, replacing Otto Addo. Having previously served as a technical advisor, Hughton was well aware of the expectations surrounding the role.

However, his tenure failed to deliver the desired impact, with the Black Stars struggling to find rhythm and an attacking edge under his leadership.

Following a disappointing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, where Ghana failed to progress beyond the group stage, Hughton was dismissed in early 2024.

“Working in Africa is very different. I worked for a nation that is football-mad. One thing Ghanaians love, apart from the Premier League, is the Black Stars,” Hughton said.

He acknowledged that the pressure was evident from the start and that results were the ultimate measure of success.

“I knew the pressure of taking the job when I took it, and if you’re not getting the right results, then you will know about it.”

Despite his short spell in charge, Hughton insists the experience reaffirmed his desire to stay involved in football.

Whether his next step takes him back to club management or another international role remains to be seen, but the 65-year-old is determined to continue contributing to the game.

Scrap dealer jailed for stealing Ghana Water Limited’s fittings

0

The Ashaiman Circuit Court, presided over by His Worship Mr. Derrick Parden Eshun, has sentenced a 20-year-old scrap dealer, Tahiru Issah, to 12 months in prison with hard labour.

The conviction follows his guilty plea to the charge of stealing when he appeared before the court on March 5, 2025.

Chief Inspector Henry Tetteh Nartey, prosecuting, said Tahiru is a Nigerien who resides at Fitter Line, a suburb of Ashaiman. He added that on February 26, 2025, the Gbetsile District Police were on their usual night patrol duty when they spotted him holding a black polythene bag containing some heavy items.

The prosecutor stated that the police became suspicious, apprehended him, and searched the polythene bag, where they discovered six stopcocks, six safety valves, and one return valve, amounting to GHS 3,250.00, belonging to Ghana Water Limited.

The facts indicated that the police subsequently arrested him and sent him to the Afienya Police Station. Upon interrogation, the suspect admitted to stealing the items from some residents in the area.

He was therefore charged with stealing and placed in custody before being processed for court.

Meanwhile, Dr. Samuel Eson, the Regional Chief Manager for the Tema Region of Ghana Water Limited, has expressed gratitude to the court for the judgment. He added that the company has recently experienced numerous meter-stealing cases, which have negatively impacted their operations.

He appealed to residents to remain vigilant and report such suspected persons to the police. He also cautioned scrap dealers and individuals involved in stealing GWL installations to desist from such acts, warning that those apprehended would face the full rigours of the law.

“We urgently need Kwesi Appiah”- Sudan FA President Dr. Moatasem explains the delay of Appiah’s salary

0

President of the Sudanese Football Association, Dr. Moatasem Jaafar, has addressed concerns regarding the delayed payment of coach James Kwesi Appiah’s salary, attributing the issue to complications with bank transfers to Ghana.

Appiah, who is yet to report to camp as Sudan prepare for crucial matches against Senegal and South Sudan in Saudi Arabia, was previously rumored to have boycotted training over unpaid entitlements, sparking speculation about his future.

Speaking in an interview, Dr. Jaafar dismissed claims of a standoff, emphasizing the Ghanaian coach’s commitment to the national team while assuring that efforts are underway to resolve the financial issue.

“These reports are not true. Kwesi is committed to his contract with the Sudanese Federation and will join the team as scheduled.

The delay in his financial entitlements is due to challenges in transferring funds to Ghana, but we are actively working to resolve the issue within the next few hours.

” He further reassured that the delay would not impact Appiah’s role with the Falcons of Jediane, praising the coach’s contributions to the team’s success. “This will not prevent him from leading the team.

The Federation is fully committed to ensuring the stability of the technical staff and fulfilling all obligations, especially after his remarkable achievements qualifying Sudan for the AFCON finals and leading the World Cup qualifying group.

“Dr. Jaafar also stressed the importance of Appiah’s presence with the squad as they prepare for key fixtures. “We urgently need Kwesi with us to guide the national team.

We recognize the sacrifices he has made and will do everything possible to address the situation and meet his needs.

“Sudan currently lead Group B with 10 points after an impressive start to their World Cup qualifying campaign. Meanwhile, Appiah is expected to join the team in Saudi Arabia in the coming days.

Police set to arrest persons abusing drugs Police set to arrest persons abusing drugs

The Ho Municipal Police Command has expressed deep concern over the rising abuse of drugs among the youth in the municipality.

Speaking to a group of students after a health walk organized by the Municipal Education Directorate as part of Ghana’s Independence Day celebrations, Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Jeremiah Alale, described the situation as alarming and a threat to society.

His comments come just weeks after a violent clash between students of Sokode Senior High Technical School and local youth, which resulted in the destruction of properties.

Reports suggest that some individuals involved in the incident were allegedly under the influence of drugs.

In response, Superintendent Alale announced plans for a police crackdown on drug abuse, warning the youth to desist from using substances such as cocaine, marijuana, and excessive alcohol or face the full force of the law.

Meanwhile, Ho Municipal Education Director, Dr. Esther Yeboah-Adzimah, has also raised concerns about the dangers of drug abuse, warning that if left unchecked, it could jeopardize the future of young people.

She stressed that schools must remain centres of learning, growth, and positive development, adding that rising hooliganism is a growing challenge in the education sector.

Dr. Yeboah-Adzimah further urged students to be ambassadors of peace and create a conducive learning environment that promotes academic excellence.

Disgraced Singer R. Kelly Gives Interview From Behind Bars

0

The R&B singer, convicted of multiple sex abuse crimes, said that “singing was a beautiful disease that’s incurable.”

R. Kelly, who is serving a decadeslong prison term on charges related to sexual abuse, has given a rare public interview.

In a monitored phone call on Sunday with the podcast “Inmate Tea with A&P,” the disgraced R&B singer claimed that he “has written over 25 albums” since his incarceration began.

Kelly began the interview, in which he expressed no contrition for his crimes, with an a capella rendition of his 1998 song “When a Woman’s Fed Up.”

He was sentenced to 30 years behind bars in 2022 for racketeering and transporting minors across state lines for sexual activity.

Later that year, he was convicted of multiple child pornography and sex abuse charges. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison on those charges, but was told he could serve all but one year concurrently with his prior 30-year sentence.

In a documentary that aired last year, Kelly’s daughter, Buku Abi, accused the artist of sexually abusing her during her childhood.

“I just remember waking up to him touching me,” Abi, born Joann Kelly, said in the two-part series, “R. Kelly’s Karma: A Daughter’s Journey.” “And I didn’t know what to do, so I just kind of laid there, and I pretended to be asleep.”

The singer’s lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, dismissed the allegations made by his daughter.

In this Sept. 17, 2019, file photo, R. Kelly appears during a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse in Chicago.

During his interview with the podcast, the convicted sex criminal said that “singing is a beautiful disease that’s incurable.”

Kelly, 58, continued by saying he is “working on getting out and getting back to getting back to what it is God” gave him his talents for. He added that he is “using patience as a tactic.”

Before Kelly’s first sentencing in 2022, victim witnesses Angela, Addie, Lizzette Martinez, Stephanie, Kitti Jones, Faith Rodgers and Sonja stepped up to the court podium to share their statements.

Angela, who witnessed Kelly assault R&B singer Aaliyah and was also a victim of sexual assault herself in the early ’90s, addressed her statement to Kelly directly.

“We are no longer the preyed upon individuals that we once were,” she read aloud. “I am a representation of every woman, boy, child, man that you have ever afflicted with your deplorable, despicable acts. And with that I leave you with yourself, Robert Sylvester Kelly.”

This photo shows R. Kelly arriving for the first day of jury selection in a 2008 child pornography trial at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse in Chicago. He was acquitted in the trial, though he would later be found guilty of child pornography charges in 2022.

Last month, the 2nd Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Manhattan denied Kelly’s attempt to appeal his sex trafficking and racketeering charges, the Associated Press reported. Given his age, this ruling could result in him remaining incarcerated until his 80s if he serves the entirety of his sentence.

I have NDC membership card but I’ve not been ardent

0

Political Marketing Lecturer and Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Development Company, Prof. Kobby Mensah, has disclosed that he previously held a National Democratic Congress (NDC) party card.

“I’ve had an NDC card in the past, but I haven’t been ardent, if I should put it that way,” he said while speaking on Accra-based Joy FM.

Prof. Kobby Mensah, who has been a major critic of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government as a political marketing expert, revealed that he has always leaned toward leftist ideology, despite his extensive research on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its campaign strategies over the years.

“I am absolutely to the left. I am left-leaning in terms of my ideology. The conversation about party affiliation depends on how you define it.

If you define it by ideological leanings, then you would associate me with the NDC because of my ideological beliefs. If you define it by membership, some might say political membership means holding a party card; in that case, that is another conversation. But I can tell you that I’m absolutely left-leaning,” he said in an interview with Joy FM.

Mahama painted the true picture of the economy – Edem Agbana

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Edem Agbana, has strongly defended President John Dramani Mahama’s assessment of the economy, describing it as an accurate reflection of the challenges inherited from the previous administration.

During his submission in Parliament, Agbana dismissed claims from the opposition that Mahama’s address was merely filled with lamentations, asserting that the president provided a truthful account of the state of the economy.

“The economy that President Mahama inherited, the economy that the NPP left behind, is actually the picture that President Mahama painted. And for some of us, we even believe that President Mahama was too modest in telling the people of Ghana the actual state of the economy that he inherited,” he stated.

He went on to highlight contradictions within the opposition, reminding them that even the former president admitted to leaving behind a struggling economy.

“The president himself, former President Akufo-Addo, indeed admitted that he was leaving behind a difficult economy. He said that in August 2023 when he stated that he knew he was leaving behind a difficult economy but expected a new leader to take us out of the challenges. If there was no challenge, why did the president then make such a statement?” he asked.

Agbana also pointed to a petition by 98 NPP MPs, who at the time demanded the dismissal of the then-Finance Minister due to the deteriorating state of the economy. He found it surprising that the same people who once called for the minister’s removal were now defending the NPP’s economic record.

Further backing Mahama’s claims, he referenced data from the World Bank and the Ghana Statistical Service, showing an increase in poverty and unemployment under the NPP government.

“The World Bank stated that over 850,000 Ghanaians were pushed below the poverty line due to high inflation. Unemployment also rose significantly, with nearly 2 million Ghanaian youth left without education, employment, or training,” he stressed.

Agbana ended his submission by urging Ghanaians to acknowledge the economic realities and trust Mahama’s leadership to steer the country toward recovery.

“I will be in Accra next week ahead of the budget reading and will take the opportunity to meet Hon. Eric Opoku to discuss the project. I need to study the strategy he used so that we can get the job done for the media,” he stated.

Group of European nations back Arab-led Gaza reconstruction plan

0

In the statement published on Saturday, the ministers said the proposal sets out “a realistic path to the reconstruction of Gaza and promises – if implemented – swift and sustainable improvement of the catastrophic living conditions for the Palestinians living in Gaza.”

“Recovery and reconstruction efforts must be based upon a solid political and security framework acceptable to both Israelis and Palestinians, which provides long term peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians alike,” it continued.

Egypt, which borders Gaza, is seeking international support for the approximately 90-page proposal, positioning it as an alternative to controversial ideas previously suggested by US President Donald Trump.

Trump has floated a vision of turning Gaza into a “Riviera of the Middle East” by “resettling” the roughly 2 million Palestinians who live there in Arab countries. Trump’s remarks sparked outrage in the Arab world and beyond.

“We are clear that Hamas must neither govern Gaza nor be a threat to Israel any more,” the statement read. At the same time, the ministers support a “central role” for the Palestinian Authority, which currently only governs the West Bank.

In conclusion, the ministers stated: “We urge all parties to build on the plan’s merits as a starting point.”

I’m a mother of many nations; I have about seven non-biological children- Ronke Oshodi-Oke

0

As reported by The Nation, renowned Nigerian actress and filmmaker Ronke Oshodi-Oke has disclosed that she considers herself a mother beyond her biological children, as she has taken several others under her care. She described herself as “a mother of many nations” due to her role in nurturing and supporting numerous individuals.

Born Ibironke Ojo, the Nollywood star shared this aspect of her life in a recent interview, offering a glimpse into her personal experiences, career journey, and guiding principles. Best known for her performance in the 2000 film Oshodi Oke, she stressed the significance of love and responsibility in shaping the lives of young individuals.

“I am a mother of many nations; I have about seven children who are not biologically mine,” she revealed, emphasizing her dedication to those she has chosen to embrace as family. While she has two biological children, she has also taken on the responsibility of caring for and nurturing others who have become part of her life.

A respected veteran in the Nigerian film industry, Oshodi-Oke attributed her passion for helping others to her upbringing and personal experiences. She noted that many young people lack proper guidance, and she feels it is her duty to step in when necessary.

“I don’t believe you must give birth to a child before assuming responsibility for them. What truly matters is making an impact, and if I can help shape someone’s future for the better, then I have fulfilled my purpose,” she stated.

Throughout her career, Oshodi-Oke has been a vocal advocate for the well-being of women and children. She has consistently used her platform to address issues affecting young people, particularly those in the entertainment sector. Acknowledging the difficulties that come with Nollywood, she advised aspiring actors to remain steadfast and disciplined.

“The industry, the audience, and even the media can be frustrating at times. But I take life as it comes—whatever happens will eventually pass,” she reflected, shedding light on the pressures of fame.

Apart from acting, Oshodi-Oke is also a filmmaker and musician. She acknowledged the progress made in Nigeria’s movie industry but pointed out persistent challenges such as piracy, urging the government to enforce stricter laws to combat it.
