The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has received a positive health update about former Presidential Secretary, Nana Bediatuo Asante. He was recently seen in public looking strong and healthy after spending several months abroad for medical treatment.
Nana Bediatuo Asante, who served as the Executive Secretary to former President Nana Akufo-Addo, fell ill in October 2024 while attending the 79th United Nations General Assembly in the United States.

The Minority in Parliament has raised concerns over what they say are two suspicious flights that landed in Ghana in March.
According to them, the two flights suspected to be carrying cocaine and an undisclosed amount of cash landed in Ghana between March 20 and March 25, 2025.
Addressing a press conference on April 1, 2025, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, said the Minority caucus intercepted an intelligence indicating that an air ambulance landed in Ghana without any referral of patients.
He said: “On the matter of AirMed flights and Cavok Air private jets transporting suspected cocaine and cash, ladies and gentlemen, on another security matter related to our airspace, the Minority Caucus calls on National Security to provide the contents of a cargo suspected to be carrying contents suspected to be cocaine and cash imported into the country by two suspicious flights, namely AirMed flight NH23AM and Cavok Air private jet Antonov AN 12 B which landed at the tarmac of Kotoka International Airport on March 2025 from Gran Canaria, an island in Spain and departed to the same Gran Canaria after the arrival.”
It added that reliable intelligence intercepted by the Minority Caucus says that on March 20, 2025, AirMed flight NH23AM, which is an air ambulance designed specifically to carry patients, landed at Kotoka International Airport in Accra and remained in the country before departing at 1 am on March 25, 2025, back to Gran Canarian island.
“Our intelligence further posits that no patient was transported by the said air flight neither to or from Accra. There is no evidence of medical referral of patients or onboard the flights on either legs of the flight. We are reliably informed that contrary to the expectation that the AirMed flight would carry patients, the purpose for which it was designed and operates, it rather, on this occasion, carried suspicious cargo suspected to be cocaine and cash in various United States dollars denominations,” he added.
The Minority also said a private jet, Cavok Air Antonov ANN12B also landed at the Kotoka International Airport on March 12, 2025, from the same island of Spain, Gran Canaria, and remained in the country for 13 days and departed at 6:40 am on March 25, 2025, to Gran Canaria the very day AirMed flight also departed to Gran Canaria.
“While it is intriguing that the two suspicious flights would depart to the same location on the same day, even more intriguing is the cargo suspiciously transported by these aircrafts to and from Gran Canaria, an island known for its notoriety in drug trafficking, money laundering, among others,” the Minority noted.
They have, however, called on the National Security to make full disclosure of the content of the cargo carried by these two aircraft into the country, as well as the cargo carried out of the country by the same aircraft to Gran Canaria.

Media personality, Captain Smart, while at Multimedia, ‘stormed’ the studios of Hitz FM, dressed as a military officer to prank colleague journalist, Andy Dosty.
The event of May 1, 2020, saw the vocal media personality, who had covered his face with a face mask, enter the studio while Andy Dosty was presenting his show on air.
With what seemed to be a prank, Captain Smart ambushed Andy Dosty and halted the show from continuing.
In the video, Captain Smart jokingly accused Andy Dosty of spreading false news on air.
“Hey! When you people sit on the radio and spread false news, I am here to arrest you,” he said.
Andy Dosty, who couldn’t believe his eyes when he was heckled, then called on the security personnel in the office to come to his rescue.
“Isn’t there any security personnel in this company? How can you allow someone to come into the studio and harass me? Someone should call security for me,” he said.
After the prank, the two media personalities were seen bursting into laughter after Captain Smart removed the face mask.
“You got me scared, and I became angry as well because how can they allow a soldier to come in here and bully me like that?” Andy Dosty retorted.
Captain Smart further noted that his decision to wear the military uniform was to applaud the security personnel for their contributions to Ghana.
“We are appreciating our front-line workers today… We are giving them a standing ovation for the wonderful things they have done since we recorded our first COVID-19 patient. They have done so well, and the immigration guys are still in the bush trying to make sure that nobody enters our border,” he added.

Oliver Barker-Vormawor, Convener of the FixTheCountry Movement
Convener of the FixTheCountry Movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has slammed the Mahama administration for adopting a lackadaisical attitude towards the fight against illegal small-scale mining (galamsey).
He said that the position of the government will undo the National Democratic Congress (NDC) despite the goodwill that the government enjoyed.
“I fear that for all the goodwill Dominic Ayine and Justice Sai are bringing to the government in ORAL, the lackadaisical attitudes on galamsey will undo NDC. Why the mixed messages? The lands minister needs to be more decisive,” he posted on his Facebook page.
He further announced a plan to protest on May 1, to remind Ghanaians and the government of the pressing need to fight against galamsey.
“A silent march on May Day to remind the government that the fight against irresponsible mining is still dear to us as Ghanaians. 1st May #SaveOurForests March?” he wrote.
Also commenting on the issue of galamsey, Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, Ken Ashigbey, insisted that a state of emergency should be declared in the areas affected by illegal small-scale mining.
He believes that the state of emergency will provide more impetus to stakeholders charged with the responsibility to nip the practice in the bud.

Some traders cashing out at the event
The town of Amanokrom in the Akuapem North Constituency came alive on Saturday, March 29, 2025, as it hosted the maiden edition of the Ofie Market, a local trade fair aimed at connecting farmers directly with consumers.
The initiative, spearheaded by Sammi Awuku, drew massive patronage and widespread commendation from farmers, traders, and residents alike.
The market saw an impressive turnout, with fresh produce, grains, vegetables, and other locally made goods selling out quickly.
For many of the participating farmers and traders, it was a breakthrough moment after months of struggling with limited market access and post-harvest losses.
“I haven’t sold this much in a long time,” one trader exclaimed.
“We can only thank Hon. Sammi Awuku for this. I am pleading that he makes this a regular event—maybe every two weeks.”
A local farmer, overwhelmed by the demand, added that “This has been a great relief for us. We often experience post-harvest losses because we lack access to buyers. God bless Sammi Awuku for us. My produce was finished in the truck before we could even offload.”
Consumers also expressed satisfaction with the quality, quantity, and affordability of the goods on sale. A shopper who traveled from Accra remarked, “This is a brilliant initiative. I got everything I planned to get and even more. I believe I have enough to last my family for the next one month.”
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the event, Sammi Awuku shared the inspiration behind the initiative.
“During my campaign rounds last year, I realized that we had a significant number of farmers, especially in the southern part of the constituency near the lower hills. Many of them expressed concern over post-harvest losses and the meager income they make from the few goods they manage to sell,” he said.
“This Ofie Market is my response to that need. I am particularly pleased with what I’m seeing here today. My hope is that our hardworking farmers will be encouraged to increase their yields to meet the growing demand we’ve created. We intend to hold this market on the last Saturday of every month. So the next Ofie Market will be on the 26th of April, 2025.”
The initiative also received strong backing from traditional leadership. The Chief of Amanokrom, Nana Osim Kwatia II, lauded the MP’s vision and the positive economic ripple effects the event had on the town.
“This is a great initiative,” the Chief stated. “May God bless our son, Sammi Awuku, for this effort. Beyond the market sales, it has also brought some economic activity to our town. I see food vendors and other small businesses also benefitting. Let’s all work hard to sustain this.”
With its strong debut, the Ofie Market is poised to become a transformative platform for agribusiness and grassroots economic empowerment in Akuapem North.

Kofi Adams is the Minister of Sports and Recreation
The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has extended his condolences to the family of Nigerian boxer, Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, over his tragic demise in Ghana during a bout on March 29, 2025, against Ghanaian opponent John Mbanugu.
According to him, the ministry and the entire nation are saddened by the unfortunate incident that claimed the boxer’s life and empathise with the Nigeria Boxing Board Control (NBBC).
The sports minister urged the bereaved family and the Nigerian sporting fraternity to stay strong during these tough moments.
“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I, on behalf of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Government of Ghana, extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun, who tragically passed away following his contest at the Bukom Boxing Arena. Gabriel, a promising athlete who displayed exceptional talent, passion, and courage in the ring, passed away under unfortunate circumstances.

Former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has raised serious concerns about security lapses at the Tema Port following revelations that over 1,300 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have gone missing.
An investigative report uncovered that ECG had 2,491 uncleared containers—filled with vital electrical cables and equipment—stored at the port. However, an independent audit later found only 1,134 containers, leaving a staggering 1,357 containers unaccounted for.
The scandal took a disturbing turn when authorities, during a tour of aluminium smelting facilities in Shai-Osudoku on Friday, discovered stolen ECG cables—components of the missing containers—being melted down and processed into aluminium rods, allegedly for export.
Reacting to the revelations in Parliament, Nitiwul expressed shock at the scale of the disappearance, questioning the effectiveness of port security.
“Containers do not have legs, they do not have wings to fly. Nobody can carry a 40-foot container. How is it possible that all the security people there—it doesn’t matter what time—and then these containers will move?” Nitiwul demanded.
“First, they’re 10 containers. The next day, 20 containers. The next day, 50 containers, to over a thousand something containers. How? How is it possible?”
The former Defence Minister warned that the incident points to deeper systemic failures, raising fears about the potential smuggling of other dangerous goods.

The Ghana Muslim Students Association has welcomed the call by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu for students to freely practice their religious faith without restrictions.

“We have had a lot of complaints of denial of fasting, congregational prayers, which we understand that the school has its own principles.
“But we have to respect the religious background of every individual we have in this country. So, that we can in unity develop the country,” he stated.

The three-member delegation led by Mr Sumaila Mahama, the Branch Manager, , made the donation to the Mosque through the Chief of Wurishie, Chief Adam Lansah and the Imam of the Mosque, Adam Nayi Alhassan at a ceremony in Tamale.
Mr Mahama, presenting the cheque on behalf of the Bank said the Bank cherished the relations it had with Muslims in the country and that the donation was a token to appreciate them.
“We thank you for your warm reception. This is Prudential Bank’s little way of supporting the Muslim ummah in celebrating Eid after the holy month of Ramadan.” he said.
Chief Adam Lansah thanked the Bank for the donation saying it would be put to good use for the benefit of all.

The Imam also offered prayers for the branch, the Bank and the management for the kind gesture.

The symposium focused on how Australia’s $60 billion climate strategy aligns with Ghana’s development goals, including, expanding access to renewable energy for underserved communities.
It also looks at supporting Ghana’s sustainable mining initiatives, boosting research collaborations between Australian and Ghanaian universities.
Experts at the event noted that COP31 could be a turning point for Africa’s climate finance agenda, and Australia is committed to advocating for fairer climate funding for developing nations.
By working together, Australia and Ghana can lead the way in ensuring that the global climate agenda prioritises Africa’s needs and sustainable economic growth.

The Minority Caucus has expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of transparency surrounding National Security’s February 9 raid on a warehouse in Sapeiman, Ga South Municipality.
The operation led to the discovery of twelve 20-foot containers filled with gold bars and an unspecified amount of cash in various denominations, estimated to be worth billions of dollars.
Speaking on the matter at a presser on Tuesday April 1, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, criticised the failure of National Security to update the public on their investigations, nearly two months after the operation.
He pointed out that the culprits have yet to be identified and prosecuted, and details regarding the exact quantity of gold and cash retrieved remain undisclosed.
“The legitimate question Ghanaians are asking is: does the government through National Security intend to divert the twelve containers of gold and cash, only to turn around to deceive the public in the end?” Rev Fordjour queried.
The Minority assured the public that they would continue to push for accountability and transparency. They called on the Minister for Interior, who also oversees National Security, to provide a comprehensive briefing on the status of the investigation and disclose plans for the gold and cash currently in state custody.
Rev Fordjour emphasised the importance of prosecuting those involved in the operation to ensure justice and restore public confidence in government institutions.
He reiterated the Minority’s commitment to advocating for credible communication on the matter.

a firm believer that, the entity that we call National Security ought to know almost everything that happens in this country, and when we are talking about the scale of this ECG saga, the national security says that it didn’t know then the country is doomed”.

“That is how we want to look at it, and if you look at it as an organized criminal network, then you begin to wonder why people are still out even in their houses. James Klutse Avedzi, former chairman of the Public Accounts Committee and current Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, has emphasised the need for stricter measures against corrupt officials.
Speaking on the issue in an interview with Joy News on Thursday March 28, Avedzi highlighted that recovering stolen funds is essential but insufficient without punitive actions.
“The recovery of the money is good. It’s okay. We should do that,” he stated, acknowledging the importance of reclaiming misappropriated government resources.
However, he cautioned against focusing solely on recovery while neglecting the punishment of offenders.
Avedzi illustrated his point with a striking example: “Someone takes $10 million of government money and trades on that money, makes an additional $5 million, and is caught. They have to pay only the $10 million. How about the $5 million profit or interest that the person has made?”
He argued that such scenarios highlight the inadequacy of current measures, which fail to address the profits gained from illicit activities.
“We recover the money, but we must punish the person,” he asserted, stressing the need for accountability that deters future misconduct.
Avedzi further questioned the morality of individuals who misuse government funds, stating, “In any case, why do you want to take government’s money and then later give it back? Government needs money to do projects for everybody, but you want to take it as an individual. It’s wrong.”

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation, Onasis Kobby, has hit back at the former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Sheila Bartels over a cryptic post she made relative to the health situation of Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
Sheila Bartels, in a social media post on Monday, March 31, 2025, attempted, albeit implicitly, to call out the government over the decision to fly out Professor Opoku-Agyemang to the United Kingdom for treatment following medical advice by doctors at the University of Ghana Medical Centre.
Sharing two photos of Professor Ransford Gyampo’s response to the news of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s treatment in the UK and Okudzeto Ablakwa’s call for a policy change in the provision of healthcare for members of the government, Sheila Bartels wrote, “We need our beautiful HE Vice President strong and healthy. Whatever it takes. Speedy recovery, ma’am.”
In response, Onasis Kobby clarified that unlike the situation with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s first resort was a Ghanaian hospital and that the decision to fly her out of the country is premised on an advice by the professionals who attended to her at UGMC.
He then called out the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government for now prioritizing healthcare delivery which in his view is manifested in the stagnation of the health sector.
“Guess you read she has been seeing a Dr in Ghana and has been recommended for further examination outside. If only the NPP didn’t waste 8-years suffocating our health sector, the needed and required abroad examination and treatment could have been done in Ghana,” he responded.
Meanwhile, updates from the office of the vice president indicate that the renowned academic is recuperating.
The office also expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for their prayers and support for Professor Opoku-Agyemang.

He was honoured with Best African Dancehall Entertainer, Best Crossover Song for ‘Commando’ featuring Bounty Killer, and Best Music Video for ‘Killa Ji Mi’.
This achievement makes him as the most awarded African artiste at the IRAWMA, with nine wins so far.
Celebrating his achievement, Shatta Wale’s manager, Sammy Flex, took to his official X account to express his gratitude to the fans for the wins.

President John Dramani Mahama
Businessman and philanthropist, Seidu Agongo has praised President John Dramani Mahama for his magnanimity, emphasising that he even dines with his enemies.
According to Agongo, President Mahama is not vindictive and possesses a forgiving heart that enables him to always forgive those who oppose him.
Speaking in an interview with Metro TV, Seidu Agongo, who is also the Founder and Chairman of the Class Media Group, stated that President Mahama is deeply committed to ensuring the success of those who come into contact with him.
“His Excellency John Mahama is someone I admire so much. He even eats with his enemies. It is difficult to tell that you are his enemy when speaking with him. He is always ready to support anyone and everyone to evolve and become the best. I have never heard President John Dramani Mahama trying to crucify anybody,” he said.
Seidu Agongo recounted how President Mahama facilitated the release of funds to Ken Agyapong, despite him being one of Mahama’s fiercest critics.
“This is a secret that I want to reveal. There were times when Ken Agyapong’s money was locked up. He had engaged in some business dealings with the Electricity Company of Ghana. He went to JM, and Mahama ensured that he was paid under the previous NDC government—not because of Ken Agyapong himself, but because he understood that as a businessman, other lives depended on him. Given what Ken Agyapong did to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, one would not have expected him to support him. But I know Mahama, and I know the kindness of his heart and his focus. Late former Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama and Jake Obetsebi Lamptey
GhanaWeb has chanced on an old video of late former Vice President of Ghana, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, delivering a speech to patrons at the Pan African Historical Theatre Festival (PANAFEST).
Clad in his traditional northern smock, hat, and trousers, he was surrounded by several individuals, including Jake Obetsebi Lamptey.

Sadly, both leading politicians from the New Patriotic Party flock men have since passed away.
Alhaji Aliu Mahama served as vice president under the John Agyekum Kufuor administration from 2001 to January 7, 2009.
He passed away at the age of 66 at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, who was the Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, also passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2016, in London after a prolonged illness.
He held various significant roles in the Kufuor administration, including Minister of Tourism and Diasporan Relations from 2005 to 2007, Chief of Staff, Minister of Information (2001–2002), and Minister of Tourism and Modernization of the Capital City (2002–2005).
He also served as the National Campaign Manager for the NPP during the 2000 presidential election.

The Chief Executive Officer of Dominion Paints, Mr. Adom, has accused Ghanaian businessman Richard Nii Armah Quaye of hijacking his company.
In a video captured by GhPage, Mr. Adom alleged that Richard Nii Armah Quaye took over Dominion Paints after initially providing financial support.
He explained that he had a business idea but lacked the funds to bring it to life. As a result, he approached Richard Nii Armah Quaye for financial assistance. According to him, Quaye agreed to invest $300,000 in the business under certain conditions.
However, Mr. Adom claimed that after the investment was made, Richard Nii Armah Quaye eventually took full control of the company. He alleged that Quaye changed the ownership structure and shareholder details, effectively making the business his own.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has reiterated its call for a dedicated funding source to support pre-tertiary education in the country.
This comes amid ongoing concerns about the financing of Ghana’s education system, including the government’s approval of approximately GHC 31.7 billion to finance the Ministry of Education’s operations for the year 2025.
Speaking to Citi News on April 1, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Tanko Musah stressed that dedicated funding is crucial to addressing educational financing challenges. He urged the government to move away from a piecemeal approach to funding education and instead implement a sustainable financing model.
“We need a dedicated fund. This is not the only item that we have in the education sector. We have the issue of school feeding and all other related matters. How do we intend to fund all those things?
“It is a good thing that the GETFund has been uncapped, but we want to see the allocation that will be made to get these things done.
“We must be able to agree and decide on how we intend to finance and fund all our educational expenditures. Aside from that, we must have a dedicated and consistent source of supply of resources,” he stated.

The lesson I draw from the PRMA and the GoldBod processes is that, when politicians are proactive in creating opportunities for citizens to input into major policy decisions, there’s usually less accrimony.
In the particular case of the GoldBod, a big stakeholder consultation that brought diverse stakeholders together was held in Accra. This was followed by a CSOs consultation at the request of CSOs.
Issues were raised, including a potential regulatory conflict with the Minerals Commission. The CSOs also demanded the strengthening of the transparency and accountability provisions, and urged that lessons were drawn from PMMC’s past involvement in gold trading and it’s associated legacy debt.
The CSOs were given the opportunity to submit a paper on some of their proposals, which they took advantage of. These did not generate the usual controversy and agitation because the GoldBod Committee was open to advice and criticism. Most of the concerns raised were subsequently addressed.
Further consultations were held in major mining areas of the country. The approach signifies a new era in our democratic culture, where our leaders are beginning to recognise that when they create opportunities for citizens’ engagement, they get told all the misgivings and issues of disagreement in the room. But when they shut the door in the face of citizens then battle lines are drawn and the salvos begin to fly in.
I take note that some compatriot still have issues related to the GoldBod. Such also deserve to be heard. Please, address your concerns to the GoldBod, at the former PMMC office, Diamond House Accra or contact me through messenger, and I will facilitate access.

Vivo Energy Ghana has appointed Mr. Christian Li as its new Managing Director following the unfortunate passing of the company’s former Managing Director, Jean-Michel Arlandis.
Shirley Tony Kum, corporate communications manager at Vivo Energy Ghana, noted this in a press release on Tuesday, April 1.
According to her, Mr. Li, a Mauritian citizen, brings with him nearly 30 years of experience in general management, business development, and sales and marketing within the energy sector.
Mr Li is said to have over the course of his career worked in more than 20 African countries, contributing to the growth of businesses in various leadership roles.
Since 2022, he has been Head of International Business for Engen, where he managed the company’s non-South African operations across countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Namibia, Botswana, Mauritius, Lesotho, and Eswatini.
Before joining Vivo Energy Ghana, he served as Managing Director for Engen Namibia for four years, earning recognition as one of the top 10 executives for three consecutive years.
The press statement noted that his earlier career also included significant leadership positions in South Africa, Mauritius, and the Republic of Congo, as well as a stint with Chevron for nearly eight years before transitioning to Engen Mauritius in 2011.

A United Nations aircraft made an emergency landing at Aden Adde Airport in Mogadishu on Tuesday afternoon following a mechanical malfunction involving its front landing gear, Fevori LLC, a Turkish company that manages the airport, confirmed in a statement.
The incident, which was also confirmed by the Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA), happened after the pilot conducted an emergency landing, during which the nose of the aircraft made contact with the surface.
“Thankfully, there were no fatalities or serious injuries. All individuals were safely evacuated and provided with medical checks and support on site,” the company added.
The De Havilland Dash 8 (DH8D) aircraft operated by the UNSOS was departing from Somalia to Baidoa when the incident happened.
The company said it responded to the incident within minutes, ensuring the safe evacuation of all passengers on board.
As a result of the incident, the taxiway was temporarily closed to facilitate the emergency response and aircraft recovery but has since been reopened for normal operations.
“A full investigation is underway in coordination with aviation authorities and the United Nations,” the company said.
A statement by SCAA said the aircraft experienced a technical issue with its nose after departing the airport at 11:16 am local time, forcing the pilot to initiate a return to Mogadishu.
“The aircraft safely executed a belly landing at Aden Adde International Airport at 13:28 local time. There were no casualties, and damage to the aircraft was minimal,” the authority said.
The incident happened barely two weeks after five Kenyans lost their lives in an aircraft crash south west of Mogadishu after departing Dhobley en route to Aden Adde International Airport.
SCAA confirmed that the aircraft in this incident, a DHC-5D Buffalo, registration number 5Y-RBA, was operated by Trident Aviation Limited and government agencies alongside partners.
Bodies of the deceased persons have since been brought to Kenya, including the aircraft’s pilot, Captain Mohammed Abdul Noor, who was buried under Muslim customs two days after the fateful incident.
Violent clash at the Eid-al-Fitr festival in Kasoa leave three persons injured
A chaotic incident at the Eid-al-Fitr festival in Kasoa has left three persons injured and one other in critical condition.
According to a report by 3news.com, two rival groups from Walantu and Odupongkpehe zongos clashed during a street carnival to climax the Eid-al-Fitr celebration.
Three persons sustained injuries, with one in critical condition as the celebration of the festivities turned chaotic at Kasoa on March 31, 2025.
A relative of one of the injured stated that the chaos was a reprisal attack from an “existing feud” between the two Muslim dominated communities in the central part of Kasoa.
Though the groups had a lingering dispute, “the fasting period prevented them from engaging in a fight and the intervention of community leaders also seemed to have put the matter to rest,” Mohammed Ousman, a witness to the clash, explained.
A female victim recounted events as, “I was having fun with my friends when the violence suddenly erupted. I felt a sharp cut on my hand.”
One person has since been detained and assisting in investigations at the CBD police station in Kasoa.
The police said the members of the youth groups carried on them various weapons, including well sharpened machetes to the carnival.
The police are still on a manhunt to apprehend other suspects who are linked to the street fight.

The incident has sparked protests in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu
Outrage has spread in Somalia after an eight-year-old girl, who had been missing for six months, was found living with a man who said he was her husband.
The girl was reported missing by her family in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland last September.
Months later, it emerged the girl’s father had consented for her to be married to an adult named Sheikh Mahmoud.
Security forces surrounded the man’s house last week and forced they way in after he locked himself in a room with the girl.
The incident has sparked anger on social media and public protests in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu.
It has also prompted fresh debates about child protection laws, as currently there is no minimum legal age for marriage.
“What’s more shocking than the tragedy itself are the allegations of abduction and the fact that her family had no knowledge of her whereabouts for months,” Fadumo Ahmed, chairperson of leading rights group the Somali Women Vision Organisation, told the BBC.
“We trust the responsible institutions to take the right and necessary legal action.”
According to the eight-year-old’s uncle, she was taken from her home in the city of Bosaso last September by a female relative. This relative said she was escorting the child on a trip to see another a uncle.
But months later, a video surfaced online, showing the girl reciting the Quran.
Her family subsequently launched a search for the child – it is unclear why they did not do this sooner.
They discovered she was in the Carmo area, living with Sheikh Mahmoud.
Sheikh Mahmoud initially said he was solely teaching the girl the Quran. But after legal complaints were filed, he changed his statement, saying he had married the girl with her father’s consent.
When asked by the BBC how he justified marrying an eight-year-old, Sheikh Mahmoud said that the traditions of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad, along with that of the Shafi’i school of thought, allowed child marriage.
After the BBC questioned his reasoning – citing opposition from numerous Somali Islamic scholars – Sheikh Mahmoud maintained that he would not abandon the marriage.
Puntland’s police and human rights authorities intervened on 25 March, removing the girl from the man’s home after her family filed a complaint.
The girl is now back with her family, Puntland’s police force told the BBC.
Additionally, an investigation into the case has been launched, government officials have said.
Child marriage remains prevalent in Somalia.
According to a report published in 2020 by the United Nations Population Fund and the Somali government, 35% of women aged between 20 and 24 in the country were married before the age of 18. In 2017 this figure stood at 45%.
The rate of child marriage is driven by various factors, including poverty, insecurity and traditional customs that often disregard a girl’s age in wedding arrangements.
In an attempt to tackle this issue, Somalia’s ministry of women and human rights submitted a draft child rights bill to parliament in 2023.
However, the proposal was sent back after MPs objected to certain provisions. The bill is expected to be reintroduced, but there is no clear timeline for this.
The Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi, has dismissed claims that the Bill establishing the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) was rushed and lacked due diligence.
The bill, aimed at regulating the gold industry, seeks to enhance transparency, improve traceability, and boost foreign exchange earnings from the crucial gold sector.
GoldBod is tasked with overseeing and regulating the buying, selling, and export of gold in Ghana.
The bill was passed by Parliament on Friday, March 29, 2025, and now awaits President Mahama’s signature to become law.
Addressing concerns about the bill’s passage, Gyamfi emphasised that extensive consultations that were undertaken before it was finalised.
“It became clear from these engagements that a broad consultative approach was an imperative in creating a legal and operational framework for the GoldBod that is fit for purpose.
Consequently, a Technical Committee was constituted by the Minister responsible for Finance with representatives from all the key stakeholders such as the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners, Chamber of Bullion Traders, Ghana, Bank of Ghana, Minerals Commission, Minerals Income Investment Fund, among others,” he stated.

CLEARING THE MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT THE GOLDBOD (PART 3)
CLAIM 3: “THE GOLDBOD BILL WAS RUSHED.”
RESPONSE: FALSE
1. I was appointed by the President as Ag. Managing Director for the PMMC on the 16th January, 2025 and tasked to work on the establishment of the GoldBod under the direction of the Finance Minister.
2. I assumed office on 20th January, 2025, and soon after, held consultations with the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners and the Chamber of Bullion Traders, Ghana.
3. It became clear from these engagements that a broad consultative approach was an imperative in creating a legal and operational framework for the GoldBod that is fit for purpose. Consequently, a Technical Committee was constituted by the Minister responsible for Finance with representatives from all the key stakeholders such as the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners, Chamber of Bullion Traders, Ghana, Bank of Ghana, Minerals Commission, Minerals Income Investment Fund, among others.
4. Following its first brainstorming session, the GoldBod Technical Committee decided to and actually held a series of consultations with diverse stakeholders.
5. First, there was a meeting with a group of experts from the Finance Ministry, followed by a meeting with the leadership of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to develop the core objects and functions of the GoldBod.
6. After these meetings, the GoldBod Technical Committee tasked its Legal Consultant to draft legislative instructions for further stakeholder consultations.
7. The GoldBod Technical Committee went on to engage stakeholders in the gold trading industry at the Holiday Inn in Accra. Participants at this meeting included members of the Chamber of Bullion Traders, Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association, Ghana Jewellers Association, Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners, the Chamber of Mines representing Large Scale mining companies, Gold Dealers under the PMMC, Gold Smiths, Bullion Transporters and some Civil Society Organizations in the Extractive Sector.
8. Soon after this meeting, the GoldBod Technical Committee held a special engagement with Civil Society Organizations in the Extractive Sector in Accra.
9. At all these meetings, participants were taken through the policy concept paper and draft legislative instructions for the establishment of the GoldBod, and their inputs were sought.
10. After duly incorporating all stakeholder inputs into the policy concept paper and the legislative instructions, the GoldBod Technical Committee decided to take the stakeholder consultations to the regional level. Three (3) programs were held, one event each at Akyem Tafo, Kumasi, and Tarkwa. At these programs, participants ranging from Chiefs, Gold Dealers, Small-Scale miners, Bullion traders and exporters, were taken through the policy concept paper and draft legislative instructions for the establishment of the GoldBod, and their views were sought.
11. It was after these stakeholder engagements that the Technical Committee fine-tuned the policy concept paper and legislative instructions for the establishment of the GoldBod, incorporating all stakeholder inputs. These two important documents were then shared with some leading CSOs for their comments (some of whom are today strangely claiming that the Bill was rushed).
12. The GoldBod Technical Committee submitted its draft legislative instructions and policy paper to the Minister for Finance, who then forwarded it to the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice for drafting. It is worthy of note that drafters from the AG’s office had been involved in the stakeholder engagement process right from the outset.
13. The draft Bill was then submitted to the President, who gave Executive Approval for the Bill. Subsequently, the Minister for Finance laid the Bill before Parliament for consideration and approval. This was after he had already informed the house about the government’s intention to set up the GoldBod in the 2025 Budget statement.
14. For the records, the GoldBod Bill was subjected to thorough scrutiny in Parliament. At the first meeting of the Joint Committee of Finance and Lands and Natural Resources, the NPP Minority side requested a one-day adjournment to study the Bill in detail before proceeding to consider it. This request was granted.
15. The following day, the Joint Committee scrutinized, reviewed and debated every single clause of the Bill in line with laid down parliamentary rules and practice. In the process, several amendments were made to the Bill. The meeting that started sometime in the morning at about 10 am, closed around 4 pm.
16. This was not enough for the NPP Minority side. They requested another meeting to raise additional amendments to the Bill in conjunction with their caucus leadership. This request was also granted.
17. At the next meeting attended by the leadership of the Joint Committee of Finance and Lands and Natural Resources, several amendments were made to the GoldBod Bill after extensive constructive discussions and debate.
18. It is instructive to note that throughout this process, the NPP side led by Hon. Mohammed Amin Adam made it clear that they supported the establishment of the GoldBod in principle, but were only interested in amending the Bill to ensure that it is fit for purpose. The report of the Joint Committee on the GoldBod Bill bears this fact out.
20. While the GoldBod Bill was under consideration in Parliament, the Technical committee held another stakeholder engagement at Bolgatanga to sensitize stakeholders in the gold trading industry in the northern part of Ghana on the Bill and policy paper, as well as seek their inputs.
21. In a spirit of transparency and respect for divergence, the Finance Minister withdrew the first Bill he laid, effected all proposed amendments, and relaid the amended version.
22. To our surprise, when the day for the second reading and consideration of the Bill came, we realized that our friends from the NPP had advertised over fifty (50) new amendments to the Bill. To ensure the smooth consideration of the Bill and avoid unnecessary time-wasting arguments on the floor, the 1st Deputy Speaker of Parliament, who was presiding, suspended the house and referred the Bill to the Winnowing Committee for fine-tuning.
23. At the winnowing session, all the over fifty (50) advertised amendments from NPP MPs were thoroughly and constructively discussed and debated. Also, over twenty (20) proposed amendments that had not even been advertised were discussed. Several of the proposed amendments were accepted at winnowing, while the rest were abandoned by the proponents in the process. It is instructive to note that the NPP side at this meeting was led by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin himself. This constructive process which took over four hours, considerably improved the GoldBod Bill into what it is today.
24. All the accepted amendments were effected into the Bill, and the same was reprinted for MPs. This was done before the second reading and consideration of the Bill.
25. For the records, Clauses 1-15 of the Bill were considered and approved by the house when the NPP Minority was present, without any substantial disagreements whatsoever. Therefore, the decision by the NPP to walk out at some point because they were tired is no evidence that the GoldBod Bill was rushed. A very respected leading member of the NPP side told me before the winnowing process commenced that he had never seen a Bill go through the kind of strict parliamentary scrutiny the GoldBod Bill was subjected to.
26. As for the press conference that was addressed by Hon. Afenyo-Markin on the night of 28th March, 2025, to label the GoldBod as “Galamsey Board”, the less said about it, the better. Every objective mind ought to know that the said press conference was nothing but a misguided partisan political stunt aimed at pleasing his party foot soldiers. The GoldBod Bill passed by Parliament has several clauses that were proposed by the NPP MPs, including Afenyo-Markin himself.
27. I have taken the time to chronicle all these events for every discerning mind to know that the GoldBod Bill, despite being developed and passed in a space of 68 days, was not rushed at all. On the contrary, the GoldBod Bill, passed by Parliament and awaiting Presidential assent, is a product of diligent work, extensive, far-reaching stakeholder consultations, buy-in, and thorough parliamentary scrutiny.

The Minority in Parliament is calling for full accountability from the government regarding the gold and cash seizures made by National Security in February this year, which they claim are worth billions of dollars.
The caucus says since the operation, the public has not been updated, raising concerns about how the government is handling the matter.
The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, who addressed the minority press conference, revealed that the operation took place in a southern municipality of Accra, where 12 containers filled with gold bars and an unspecified amount of cash in US dollars and Ghanaian cedis were uncovered.
The operation, estimated to involve billions of dollars, was widely reported by various media outlets across Ghana, according to him.
“This operation has attracted significant media attention,” Rev. Fordjour said. “The public has a right to know how much was seized and the full scope of the operation.”
Despite the high-profile nature of the operation, nearly two months have passed without any updates from National Security.
“It is unacceptable that, after all this time, we still don’t know the exact quantity of gold or the specific amount of cash seized,” he added.
The identities of those responsible for the large-scale shipment of gold and cash remain unknown, and the government has not clarified what it intends to do with the assets, which are still under National Security’s custody.
“We demand accountability,” Rev. Fordjour insisted. “National Security must provide a clear explanation of the gold bars and cash seized, as well as their intentions for these assets.”
“We, the Mighty Minority, demand transparency and accountability,” Rev. Fordjour continued. “The Ghanaian people have a legitimate question: Does the government intend to divert the 12 containers filled with gold and cash, only to later claim the gold is fake and the cash counterfeit?”
The Minority has given National Security a two-month deadline to update the public on the progress of the investigation.
However, with no information forthcoming, scepticism is growing, he said.
“We assure the public that the mighty minority will not rest until a full and transparent account of the situation is provided by the Minister for the Interior,” Rev. Fordjour stated.
Emphasising the importance of transparency, he highlighted the potential impact of the discovery on the country.
“The public’s growing scepticism is entirely understandable,” he remarked. “It is crucial that the government provides a clear and honest account to maintain trust and confidence among the people of Ghana.”
“The Minority caucus’s commitment to ensuring that the government, through the Minister for Interior, provides a clear and transparent account of the investigation’s findings and plans is crucial in maintaining public trust and confidence,”he concluded.

The Minority Caucus has voiced concerns over the rising threats of piracy, drug trafficking, and money laundering in Ghana under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking at a press briefing, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, highlighted the urgent need to preserve Ghana’s reputation as one of the most peaceful countries in Africa.
Rev. Fordjour stated, “Ghana in the past eight years, had been ranked favourably by notable global organisations as the second most peaceful country in Africa in respect of crime rate and globally, ahead of Australia and Canada.
“It is therefore imperative that under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, Ghana continues to be safe and not degenerate into a safe haven for pirates, drug trafficking and money laundering.”
Concerns over National Security Operations
The Minority raised serious questions regarding the February 9 raid conducted by National Security in Sapeiman, Ga South Municipality, where 12 containers filled with gold bars and cash worth billions of dollars were uncovered.
Despite the operation being widely reported, National Security has yet to disclose the actual findings or prosecute culprits involved.
The Minority expressed fears that the assets could be misappropriated and called for transparent communication on the investigation’s progress.
Suspicious Aircraft Activity at Kotoka Airport
The Minority also revealed concerns about two suspicious flights—AirMed Flight N823AM and Cavok Air Antonov An-12B—that recently landed at Kotoka International Airport from Gran Canaria, a location known for drug trafficking and money laundering. Intelligence suggests these flights carried suspected cocaine and cash.
The Minority demanded full disclosure of the cargo contents to assure Ghanaians of airspace security.
Pirate Attack on Ghanaian Waters
On March 27, pirates allegedly attacked the Ghanaian fishing vessel MENGXIN 1, kidnapping its Captain, Chief Mate, and Chief Engineer, all Chinese nationals. The Minority urged the government to resource the Ghana Navy with Offshore Patrol Vessels to bolster security in Ghanaian waters.
Rev Fordjour noted that a previous attempt to acquire these vessels was opposed by the NDC government, leaving the country vulnerable to exploitation by pirates.
Call to Action
The Minority pledged to hold the government accountable on these critical security matters and called for immediate measures to prevent Ghana from becoming a hub for illegal activities.
They emphasised the importance of transparency and collaboration in addressing these challenges and safeguarding the nation’s integrity on the global stage.

The Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company, Sammy Gyamfi, has clarified misconceptions surrounding the institution of the Ghana Gold Board to tackle the woes of the local currency.
According to him, it took about 68 days and several consultations with stakeholders after the directive of the Minister of Finance to get the board running.
He insisted that due processes were followed, including a broad consultative approach which was imperative in creating a legal and operational framework for the GoldBod that is fit for purpose.
In a series of write-ups to clarify the role of the board and debunk assertions, he noted that a first meeting was had with a group of experts from the finance ministry, followed by a meeting with the leadership of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to develop the core objects and functions of the GoldBod.

1. I was appointed by the President as Ag. Managing Director for the PMMC on the 16th January, 2025 and tasked to work on the establishment of the GoldBod under the direction of the Finance Minister.
2. I assumed office on 20th January, 2025 and soon after, held consultations with the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners and the Chamber of Bullion Traders, Ghana.
3. It became clear from these engagements, that a broad consultative approach was an imperative in creating a legal and operational framework for the GoldBod that is fit for purpose. Consequently, a Technical Committee was constituted by the Minister responsible for Finance with representatives from all the key stakeholders such as the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners, Chamber of Bullion Traders, Ghana, Bank of Ghana, Minerals Commission, Minerals Income Investment Fund, among others.
4. Following its first brainstorming session, the GoldBod Technical Committee decided to and actually held a series of consultations with diverse stakeholders.
5. First, was a meeting with a group of experts from the Finance Ministry, followed by a meeting with the leadership of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to develop the core objects and functions of the GoldBod.
6. After these meetings, the GoldBod Technical Committee tasked its Legal Consultant, to draft legislative instructions for further stakeholder consultations.
7. The GoldBod Technical Committee went on to engage stakeholders in the gold trading industry at Holiday Inn in Accra. Participants at this meeting included members of the Chamber of Bullion Traders, Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association, Ghana Jewellers Association, Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners, the Chamber of Mines representing Large Scale mining companies, Gold Dealers under the PMMC, Gold Smiths, Bullion Transporters and some Civil Society Organizations in the Extractive Sector.

Three (3) programs were held, one event each at Akyem Tafo, Kumasi and Tarkwa. At these programs, participants ranging from Chiefs, Gold Dealers, Small-Scale miners, Bullion traders and exporters, were taken through the policy concept paper and draft legislative instructions for the establishment of the GoldBod and their views sought.

It was after these stakeholder engagements that the Technical Committee fine-tuned the policy concept paper and legislative instructions for the establishment of the GoldBod, incorporating all stakeholder inputs. These two important documents were then shared with some leading CSOs for their comments (some of whom are today strangely claiming that the Bill was rushed).

Gabriel Oluwasegun in red shorts fought against John Mbanugu in a white shorts
The Secretary-General of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control, Oluremi Aboderin, has disclosed that event organisers bribed the late boxer, Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, to lose his bout to his Ghanaian opponent, John Mbanugu.
According to him, some officials from the event organisers approached Oluwasegun to offer him a sum of money to lose to his Ghanaian opponent, which surprised him because it was not part of the earlier agreement.
However, after discussions, he said the deceased boxer and his trainer decided to accept the offer but demanded more funds before the fight, which the said officials were initially reluctant to provide.
“I was made to understand that an issue arose at the weigh-in, where Segun was told that he had been brought from Nigeria to lose to the Ghanaian boxer. Segun said, ‘No, we never had this agreement before I left Nigeria.’
“But if you want me to lose, that means you must add to my boss an extra amount that must be paid.’ They went back and forth until Friday. Segun said the additional money might be around $500, but what they were offering was too small,” he said, as reported by Joy Sports.
Aboderin further disclosed that the boxing event organisers eventually agreed to pay the money, but the timing of the fight was wrong.
“Eventually, Segun decided he would not fight, and they decided to leave. On their way back to Nigeria, they received a call informing them that the organisers were now willing to pay the extra amount he had requested.
“They were also told that there was another fight scheduled in Ghana on Saturday night, and that their fight would be added. Segun and the trainer returned, and that is where the GBA erred. They should not have allowed him to fight on Saturday because the rules state that a boxer must weigh in on Thursday and fight the following day, not two days later,” he indicated.
Gabriel Oluwasegun collapsed during a bout against Ghana’s John Mbanugu on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena and was later pronounced dead at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Hakainde Hichilema, who took office in 2021, said he has gone public with his concerns
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has warned ministers against dozing off during meetings, attributing their lack of attentiveness to “indulgence” and an absence of self-control.
“In cabinet somebody’s sleeping at 10 hours – the question is where were they… if you can start conking there? To me that is a crime, a serous crime,” Hichilema said during a swearing-in ceremony for a new minister.
He did not spell out what exactly he meant by “indulgence” but local media have interpreted this as referring to excessive alcohol drinking and late-night partying.
The president warned that such behaviour risked exposing state secrets and delayed service delivery to the public.
Hichilema won a landslide victory in 2021 with ambitious plans to turn around the economy of Africa’s second largest copper producer.
Since assuming office, he has sacked several senior officials including ministers over performance issues.
Speaking on Monday as he welcomed newly appointed Local Government Minister Gift Sialubalo, the president said he has now gone public with his concerns about cabinet members after saying it in private “over and over”.
Without naming anyone, he said that some ministers “develop a knack” of revealing confidential state information on social media “especially during happy hours”.
“I have advised cabinet that we must have a self-censure. When you’re in public office you must have… self-control, not to over-indulge,” the president added.
Citing the Bible, he warned such behaviour could lead to self-destruction.
“So how do you participate in a meeting when you are sleeping? The message is very clear: you are not interested in cabinet deliberations on behalf of Zambians. So why are you sitting there?” he asked.
The president is expected to seek a second term in next year’s general election. He could face stiff competition from his predecessor, Edgar Lungu, who has mounted a political come back but is currently barred from running.

Adaklu Waya (V/R), April 1, GNA – Mr. Bright Nyatsikor, a Volta Regional Communications team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said the nomination of Mr. Jerry Ameko by President John Mahama to serve as the District Chief Executive for Adaklu was a wise decision.
He said apart from Mr. Kwame Agbodza, Minister of Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Mr. Ameko was the most competent among the party members in the Constituency.
Mr. Nyatsikor, who is also the Volta/Oti Regional Public Relations Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority, was commenting on the nominee in an interview with the Ghana News Agency.
He noted that Mr. Ameko once served as a government appointee and also served as an elected Assemblyman in the Adaklu District Assembly.
Mr. Nyatsikor said the nominee had the expertise and experience to handle the technocrats of the Assembly.
He stated that one of Mr. Ameko’s strong weapons was his ability to relate well with members of other political parties in the district and was hopeful members of the Adaklu District Assembly would unanimously endorse him.
Mr. Nyatsikor called on citizens of the area to support the nominee if endorsed to enable him move the district to another level.
“The development of Adaklu supersedes our political and individual ambitions therefore let us come together and work in unison devoid of political affiliations,” he stated.
He urged members of the National Democratic Congress in the area, family members and friends to be moderate in their demands from the nominee, adding “let us refrain from putting too much financial and other demands on him.”
Mr. Nyatsikor took the opportunity to congratulate the nominee and was hopeful he would use his expertise to the advantage of the district.
Mr. Ameko is the incumbent Adaklu Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress.
He is one the 71 people nominated by President John Mahama in a letter signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, to serve as Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in eight regions of the country.

The Minority in Parliament has raised concerns over what it deems as the increasing cases of drug trafficking and money laundering in the country, barely three months after the New Patriotic Party NPP handed over power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to them, nearly two months after a raid on 12 containers of gold and cash at Sapeiman in Accra, the National Security has failed to brief the public on the status of investigations to ascertain the culprits and the actual quantity of gold and specific amount of money retrieved in the operation.
Additionally, the caucus has demanded accountability for cargo suspected to be cocaine and cash transported into the country by two suspicious flights that landed at the Kotoka International Airport in March 2025.
Addressing journalists, the Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, urged the government to be transparent in its fight against drug trafficking and money laundering.
“We demand accountability from the National Security for the gold bars and cash retrieved and what they intend to do with it. The Minority Caucus, as responsible opposition as we are in absolute circumspection, has been patient and originally given two clear months for National Security to communicate the status of their investigation with the public,”He demanded.
The group also attributed the pirate attack on a Ghanaian-registered fishing vessel on March 27, 2025, to the NDC MPs’ opposition to the planned procurement of two offshore patrol vessels by the Akufo-Addo government.
“You will recall the diligent attempt of the erstwhile government to procure two offshore vessels for the Ghana Navy in 2024. This plan in its final stages was fiercely opposed by the NDC in parliament, who called for the process to be terminated.
“Indeed, subsequently, the process of purchase was thus aborted. As pirates are aware of Ghana Navy’s lack of offshore patrol vessels, the vulnerabilities of the security of our waters are likely to be exploited by these pirates,” he said.

Her comments come after Professor Jane Naana was rushed to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on Saturday, March 29, 2025, after a sudden illness on Friday night after work.
Mandalay used to be known as the city of gold, dotted by glittering pagodas and Buddhist burial mounds, but the air in Myanmar’s former royal capital now reeks of dead bodies.
So many corpses have piled up since a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck last Friday close to Mandalay, that they have had to be “cremated in stacks”, one resident says.
The death toll from the quake and a series of aftershocks has climbed past 2,700, with 4,521 injured and hundreds still missing, Myanmar’s military chief said. Those figures are expected to rise.
Residents in the country’s second most populous city say they have spent sleepless nights wandering the streets in despair as food and water supplies dwindle.
The Mandalay resident who spoke of bodies being “cremated in stacks” lost her aunt in the quake.
“But her body was only pulled out of the rubble two days later, on 30 March,” said the 23-year-old student who wanted only to be known as J.
Poor infrastructure and a patchwork of civil conflicts are severely hampering the relief effort in Myanmar, where the military has a history of suppressing the scale of national disasters. The death toll is expected to keep rising as rescuers gain access to more collapsed buildings and cut-off districts.
J, who lives in Mandalay’s Mahaaungmyay district, has felt “dizzy from being deprived of sleep”, she said.
Many residents have been living out of tents – or nothing – along the streets, fearing that what’s left of their homes will not hold up against the aftershocks.
“I have seen many people, myself included, crouching over and crying out loud on the streets,” J said.
But survivors are still being found in the city. The fire service said it had rescued 403 people in Mandalay in the past four days, and recovered 259 bodies. The true number of casualties is thought to be much higher than the official version.
In a televised speech on Tuesday, military chief Min Aung Hlaing said the death toll may exceed 3,000, but the US Geological Survey said on Friday “a death toll over 10,000 is a strong possibility” based on the location and size of the quake.
Young children have been especially traumatised in the disaster.
A local pastor told the BBC his eight-year-old son had burst into tears all of a sudden several times in the last few days, after witnessing parts of his neighbourhood buried under rubble in an instant.
“He was in the bedroom upstairs when the earthquake struck, and my wife was attending to his younger sister, so some debris had fallen onto him,” says Ruate, who only gave his first name.
“Yesterday we saw bodies being brought out of collapsed buildings in our neighbourhood,” said Ruate, who lives in the Pyigyitagon area.
“It’s very sobering. Myanmar has been hit by so many disasters, some natural, some human made. Everyone’s just gotten so tired. We are feeling hopeless and helpless.”
A monk who lives near the Sky Villa condominium, one of the worst-hit buildings reduced from 12 to six storeys by the earthquake, told the BBC that while some people had been pulled out alive, “only dead bodies have been recovered” in the past 24 hours.
“I hope this will be over soon. There are many [bodies] still inside, I think more than a hundred,” he said.
Crematoriums close to Mandalay have been overwhelmed, while authorities have been running out of body bags, among other supplies, including food and drinking water.
Around the city, the remains of crushed pagodas and golden spires line the streets. While Mandalay used to be a major centre for the production of gold leaf and a popular tourist destination, poverty in the city has soared in recent years, as with elsewhere in Myanmar (formerly called Burma).

In the interview, Mahama commended Nacee’s musical talent, highlighting his expertise in sound engineering and his consistent support in the creation of political songs during the election periods, and also how he reached out to Nacee whenever an election was approaching.
“Whenever someone is good at what they do, it’s important to acknowledge and commend their work. Nacee has composed many of our campaign songs, from ‘Onaapo’ to the most recent one, ‘Kwen Kwen.’ He is incredibly talented, especially when it comes to sound engineering, and I consider him one of the best in Ghana,” Mahama said

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has dismissed reports suggesting that Hearts of Oak will make a return to the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday.
The Phobians, who have been playing their home games at the Legon Sports Stadium, were originally scheduled to face Nations FC at the Accra Sports Stadium for their Matchday 21 clash in the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League.
Hearts of Oak had moved to the University of Ghana Stadium due to ongoing maintenance at the aforementioned venue.

Ghanaian media personality, Afia Pokua, widely known as Vim Lady, has reminded the public that seeking medical treatment abroad is not a new practice among Ghanaian politicians as reported by MyNewsGH.
In a recent appearance on the Gyaso Gyaso program, she revealed that even former President Jerry John Rawlings, regarded as a symbol of nationalism, resorted to traveling overseas for healthcare under a false identity.
Vim Lady disclosed that Rawlings went to London for treatment under the alias “Paul Gyamfi” because, even in his time, Ghana’s healthcare system was unreliable.
“Rawlings himself, the man many hail as a nationalist, went to London for medical care. He used the name ‘Paul Gyamfi’ just to access treatment. Why? Because even back then, the system wasn’t reliable,” she said.
