Walewale Curfew Heavy-Handed – MP

0

Dr. Abdul Kabiru Tiah Mahama

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Walewale, Dr. Abdul Kabiru Tiah Mahama, has strongly criticised the imposition of a curfew in his constituency, calling it a heavy-handed response to the recent security challenges the area has faced.

In a statement made in Parliament last Friday, the MP expressed deep concern over the rising violence and brutality from security personnel, which, he argues, has caused unnecessary suffering for innocent residents.

Dr. Mahama conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have tragically lost their lives in the violence that has plagued the constituency.

He noted that the people of Walewale and surrounding communities are living in constant fear, and he called for urgent action to restore peace and stability.

The MP emphasised the importance of making the right decisions to avoid further escalation of the situation, describing the current environment in Walewale as one of pain and uncertainty.

He pointed to the increasing criminal activity on the highway between Bolgatanga and Tamale, which passes through Walewale, as a key contributor to the unrest.

According to Dr. Mahama, the lack of a decisive response to these attacks has emboldened criminals, leading to more violence and fatalities.

He again pointed to a pattern of attacks on both the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakom Road and the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale Road, urging the government to take swift action to prevent further bloodshed.

He said the recent unrest in Walewale began on January 14, 2025, when a stationary vehicle caught fire, triggering a violent response from the military.

Dr. Mahama criticised the military for their actions, which involved indiscriminately beating several civilians, including those peacefully sitting at a local National Democratic Congress (NDC) base.

While the military later issued an apology for the incident, Dr. Mahama warned that such encroachments into civilian spaces are dangerous and could escalate further if not properly addressed.

The MP also recounted the series of reprisal attacks that have taken place in the area in recent weeks.

On February 10, 2025, he indicated that a vehicle was set ablaze in Wulugu, followed by further attacks in Walewale on February 12 and 14.

In response, the military allegedly beat up anyone they encountered, including innocent residents from Kukua, Loagri, Walewale, Gbimsi, and Wulugu.

He said tragically, one person lost his life in the attacks, and two journalists were also assaulted.

Dr. Mahama condemned the military’s actions, describing them as equally reprehensible as the criminal attacks on travellers, and called for an investigation into the actions of the security forces.

The MP called for a full-scale investigation into the deaths and brutality committed by security forces in the past two weeks.

He emphasised that such an inquiry is necessary to bring justice to the victims and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.

While the police are already investigating the murders of innocent travellers along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale Road, Dr. Mahama urged Parliament to ensure that a thorough investigation is conducted into the actions of the military.

On the curfew imposed on Walewale and its surrounding areas, Dr. Mahama argued that this decision was heavy-handed and unwarranted.

He pointed out that Walewale is a relatively peaceful community, and the curfew punishes innocent residents who are already victims of the violence.

The MP noted that most of the attacks on the highway take place during the daytime, outside the curfew hours, rendering the measure ineffective.

Dr. Mahama appealed for the review and lifting of the curfew, calling for the return of normalcy to Walewale.

He emphasised that this issue transcends politics and tribal divisions, urging all stakeholders to come together to address the security challenges in a way that promotes peace and justice for all.

A stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, Iddrisu Musah Superior, has called for the immediate removal of all the taxes President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) promised to scrap during the electioneering campaign.

In a statement on Monday, February 24, 2025, he insisted that the COVID-19 Levy, and the Betting Tax must be eliminated without delay.

“Betting Tax, COVID Levy and all the taxes Mahama and the NDC promised to scrap must go!” he stated.

Expressing his concerns, Musah Superior accused some pro-NDC groups of pretending to be financial experts while advocating for the retention of these taxes.

“We are aware that of some pro NDC, individuals and groups masquerading as finance experts, advocating that, some of the existing taxes must not be scrapped,” he noted.

He warned that any attempt to renege on the NDC’s manifesto commitments would be met with strong resistance.

“We are not some Paleolithic humans to be whipped into accepting this flapdoodle,” he declared, stressing that the public would not be deceived into accepting excuses for maintaining the taxes.

He further criticised what he described as a hesitant and indecisive approach to governance, pledging to remain vigilant.

Musah Superior also assured that he and others would closely monitor the administration’s actions, ensuring that John Dramani Mahama and the NDC fulfill their promises to Ghanaians.

“We will continue to keep watch on developments in this dithering government and hold he feet of the president to the fire,” he added.

In the run-up to the 2024 Election, John Mahama reiterated his vow to abolish both the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) and the tax on betting winnings if elected.

He criticised the E-Levy for not meeting its revenue targets and for imposing unnecessary financial strain on citizens.

NCCE Director commends ‘one million coders’ initiative

National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE)

Emmanuel Hinneh, the Dormaa East District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Bono Region, has lauded the government’s ‘one million coder’s programme’, calling for the implementation of the policy.

Describing the concept of the programme as appropriate, he said the implementation of the coding policy would build and equip youth with the relevant digital skills and enlighten them on technology.

That has the potential to create thousands of jobs for the youth. In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Wamfie, Hinneh urged the government to partner with the private sector, saying as an engine of growth effective public-private partnership would not only spur economic development but also create job opportunities for the youth.

Hinneh said there were numerous job opportunities in the private sector, urging the youth to concentrate on those areas rather than relying on the government for employment.

He also urged the youth to identify and build on their talents, asking religious bodies to help the youth in that direction, saying religious bodies could do that by offering professional and career counselling for them.

Hinneh expressed worry about the inaccessibility of financial support for the youth to engage in entrepreneurship and called on financial institutions to help those interested in engaging in small and medium enterprises.

‘I’m always ready’ – Laryea Kingston eyes senior national team role

Laryea Kingston is the former coach of the Black Starlets Laryea Kingston is the former coach of the Black Starlets

Former Ghana U17 coach Laryea Kingston has expressed his desire to return to the national team setup, revealing that he is ready to embrace a new challenge with the senior side.

Reflecting on his journey and the current state of Ghanaian football, Kingston shared his thoughts on the nation’s passion for the sport, its ongoing struggles, and his deep-seated desire to contribute to the country’s football development.

Kingston, who led the Black Starlets since October 2023, stepped down after Ghana failed to qualify for the U-17 AFCON competition for the third consecutive time in May 2024, citing external influence and a lack of fulfilment as some of the reasons for his departure.

Despite this setback, he still dreams of a return to coaching any of the national teams, a sentiment he shared with JoySports during an interview.

“For me, I’m Ghanaian, and even today, whether at the FA or in Ghana, I believe I can still contribute to Ghanaian soccer. That is something close to my heart, a goal I want to achieve. If I receive a call to come back and continue where I left off, why not?” he remarked.

Kingston also revealed his aspiration to move from coaching youth teams to leading the senior national team, noting that his accumulated experience now equips him to manage a first-team environment.

“I feel ready to reach the top with the senior national team. My strengths have evolved from development to management. I understand how to manage both individual players and the group as a whole. If given the opportunity, I’m ready. Even today, if I receive a call to support any of the national teams, I’m more than willing to return because that’s what I want to do,” he added.

During his tenure with the Black Starlets, Kingston oversaw 17 matches, winning 12, drawing 3, and suffering 2 losses. Under his leadership, the team scored 54 goals and conceded 15.

US star John Legend defends playing Rwanda concert during war

0

American singer-songwriter John Legend has told the BBC he is unfazed by a public backlash against his decision to perform in Rwanda, despite the country’s involvement in the war in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.

“I don’t believe that we should punish the people of Rwanda and punish the people of other countries when we disagree with their leaders,” he said after last week’s concert in Kigali.

In recent weeks, M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, have seized the two largest cities in the mineral-rich east of the DR Congo.

There is evidence Rwanda has sent 4,000 troops across the border to support the rebels.

Hundreds of thousands of civilians are now destitute having fled their homes, and shocking violence, including the rape of children, has skyrocketed.

Critics argue that Legend could have made a powerful statement by pulling out of the concert, especially given his highly respected “EGOT” status as someone who has won the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards.

Fellow Grammy-winner Tems did pull out of last week’s concert in Rwanda, saying she would “never, ever intend to be insensitive to real-world issues”.

But Legend defended his decision to headline the Move Afrika event in Kigali, which was run by the Global Citizen NGO and attracted thousands of fans from across the continent.

He said he was not being paid for the performance but felt it was his duty to help “grow touring capabilities” on the African continent, which is often overlooked by international stars on so-called world tours.

“I’m aware of what’s happening [in DR Congo] and I’m aware of the calls there have been for me to not do this show, but I really believe that the mission of Move Afrika is still important,” he told the BBC.

Delighted fans at the sold-out show agreed, but the social media backlash was ferocious enough to force Legend to delete an Instagram post he had made promoting the event.

Belgium-based activist Denise Zanesa had argued that “performing under the banner” of Rwanda “would be akin to collaborating with oppression itself”, in a message posted to X (formerly Twitter).

It was a sentiment echoed by others, including Simone Umba in the US, who wrote in a TikTok video caption: “So are we ready to talk about Rwanda’s use of Black American culture in their soft campaigning to normalise their terrorising of eastern Congo?”

Taking a political stance would have been nothing new for the star.

Legend is outspoken in his criticism of US President Donald Trump. He also severed ties with former mentor Kanye West when he ran for president, suspecting it was part of a wider Trump campaign to “siphon” black people’s votes away from the Democrats.

The debate over Rwanda’s relationship with popular global figures is also not new.

Most recently, Rwanda has been accused of “sportswashing” – with critics saying it uses the feel-good factor of international football to cover up alleged human rights abuses at home.

The East African nation is said to receive $1bn (£800m) a year in foreign aid and its tourism arm – Visit Rwanda – has lucrative sponsorship deals with Arsenal in England, Bayern Munich in Germany and Paris St-Germain in France.

When asked his thoughts on the topic, Legend’s aide told the BBC that he would not answer that question.

It appears that, as far as Legend and his team are concerned, his music itself should do the talking.

Did They Fail Their Courses? Peeps Quiz As Afia Schwar’s Twin Sons Fail To Appear At Their Graduation

0

Some Ghanaians have lambasted Controversial loudmouth media personality, Afia Schwarzenegger for staying quiet over the graduation of her twin sons.

Afia is known for flaunting the achievements of her twin sons, John Irving and James Ian Geiling Heerdegen, on social media, especially during their academic milestones.

A few years ago, she she celebrated their admission into the University of Ghana, Legon, expressing gratitude and sharing their achievement with her followers. She even shaded her haters that she has been able to single-handedly take care of her kids.

However, recent events have sparked curiosity among fans and followers. Despite the news of her twin sons’ colleagues graduating, there has been a noticeable absence of celebratory posts from Afia Schwarzenegger.

This silence has led to speculation, with some questioning whether the twins successfully completed their courses.

Adding to the intrigue, the twins were conspicuously absent from the graduation ceremony, further fuelling the rumours of their academic failure. Given Afia’s history of publicly celebrating her sons’ achievements, this uncharacteristic silence has left many wondering about the reasons behind it.

Recall that a few years ago, Afia Schwarzenegger gifted her twin sons a luxurious house following their graduation from high school.

As of now, neither Afia Schwarzenegger nor her sons have addressed the circulating rumours.

Asante Akyem North MP Fires Fatima Abubakar’s For Saying It’s Bad To Use Twi Language In Parliament

0

Accra – The ongoing debate over the use of English in Ghana’s Parliament has taken a new twist, with O. K. Frimpong, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, strongly reacting to comments made by former Information Minister Fatima Abubakar.

In a recent interview with TV3, Abubakar had stated that a significant number of majority MPs are struggling to communicate effectively in English during parliamentary proceedings. Her remarks have sparked both support and backlash, particularly from lawmakers and the public.

Speaking on the issue, Hon. O. K. Frimpong expressed disappointment at the former minister’s comments, calling them “unfortunate.” He emphasized that the MPs, including those in the majority, are well-versed in English and had, in fact, campaigned in the language during their political journeys.

“What the former Information Minister said about some majority MPs struggling to speak English in Parliament is very unfortunate,” Frimpong said. “Before we became parliamentarians, we had campaigned on very platforms, TV and radio stations using the English language. So, what is she talking about? We can speak the English language very well, but we should be proud of our own language. Besides, English is our colonial master’s language.”

Frimpong’s comments highlight a broader cultural and political conversation that has been brewing among some Ghanaians. While many agree that MPs should be proficient in English, there is also a growing sentiment that Ghanaian languages deserve more recognition and should be integrated into the country’s official discourse.

The debate is far from one-sided. After Frimpong’s response, many Ghanaians weighed in, some agreeing with him. “It’s about time we use our own language in Parliament,” said one social media user. Another added, “Our own languages have value too, and it’s time we stop hiding behind English.”

On the other side, critics argue that English, being the official language of Ghana, remains essential for formal and legal matters in Parliament. “Whether English is a colonial language or not, it’s the language of communication in Ghana,” said one commentator.

As the debate continues to unfold, it is clear that the role of English versus local languages in Ghana’s Parliament will remain a hot topic for the foreseeable future. Will MPs embrace a more bilingual approach, or will English continue to dominate the chamber? Only time will tell.

Odorgonor SHS students protest malfunctioning street lights

0

Students of Odorgonor Senior High School in Accra took to the streets on Monday, February 24, to protest faulty traffic lights and streetlights near their school, citing safety concerns.

The students lament that the malfunctioning signals have already led to the death of staff, and they fear more lives could be at risk if urgent action is not taken.

Their demonstration briefly disrupted traffic along the stretch.

According to the students, vehicles speed past the school’s entrance due to the non-functional traffic lights, resulting in multiple near-miss accidents.

Some of the protesting students called on authorities to act swiftly to prevent further casualties.

“Our security man has died because there’s no traffic light here. We call on the government to swiftly intervene.”

As to the outcome of the education forum, if Ghanaians by consensus agree on a particular direction, and it becomes government policy, I will support it in any way. I declined leadership offer – Dr. Ayew Afriye reacts to reports of losing NPP Ashanti Caucus election

0

Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye Member of Parliament (MP) for Effiduase-Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Effiduase-Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, has refuted reports that he suffered defeat in the election of leaders for the Ashanti Regional caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament.

In a post shared on Facebook, on February 24, 2025, Dr. Ayew Afriye said that even though members of the caucus wanted him to take a leadership role, he declined it.

He explained that he only helped in the reorganisation of the Ashanti NPP caucus and opted to stay out of the election of its leaders.

The Effiduase-Asokore legislator added that he would have certainly won if he contested for any position in the leadership of the caucus.

“Do you want to know what I texted on the platform when I saw people wanted me to lead because I had actively pushed for the formation of a new caucus as that of the 8th parliament had expired?

“Yes! I played an instrumental role in getting this new caucus formed but afterwards, I told them I was leaving for the US and was out of any leadership role. If you heard I was leading the interim management committee of the Ashanti caucus; Yes, but it was to organise it and stay away.

He added, “I am happy my works indeed have brought in a new leadership. However, I extended my apologies on the day the new leadership was formed and deliberately absented myself though I was in Parliament. Later, I apologised to the caucus. I couldn’t have lost an election!!”

The Ashanti NPP caucus has corroborated Dr. Ayew Afriye’s claim that he did not take part in the election.

In a statement issued by its secretary, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, who is MP for Old Tafo, the Ashanti NPP caucus refuted reports that the leadership election was biased against Dr. Ayew Afriye.

The statement clarified that the Effiduase-Asokore legislator, who served as the middle-belt campaign coordinator for the NPP in the 2024 election, neither participated in the election nor campaigned for a position.

“Contrary to reports, the claim that Hon. Nana Ayew Afriye garnered only eight (8) votes is not only misleading but also factually inaccurate. The actual vote count does not reflect this assertion, and any attempt to portray such figures is a deliberate effort to misinform the public.

“It is entirely false to suggest that Hon. Nana Ayew Afriye was present at the election, campaigned, or solicited votes based on his affiliation with Dr. Bawumia. The reality is that he was not in attendance at the said meeting or election,” parts of the statement read.

Shatana jubilates as pastor declares ‘Moneycetamol’ a life necessity

0

Ghanaian musician Shatana is in high spirits following recent remarks by Pastor Jakes Tetteh, founder of Redeemed Kingdom Gospel Church at Botwe Third Gate, which seemingly validate her hit song Moneycetamol.

Pastor Tetteh, while addressing his congregation, described money as “Moneycetamol”—a play on words likening financial stability to a pain-relieving drug.

He emphasized that financial struggles could lead to frustration, prostitution, insomnia, and even death, stressing the need for both spiritual and financial empowerment.

Shatana, whose song ‘Moneycetamol’ has been a subject of widespread debate, has taken the pastor’s statement as an endorsement of her message. The song, which highlights the importance of financial independence and security, has sparked conversations even within religious circles.

Reacting to the pastor’s remarks, Shatana shared her excitement on social media, suggesting that her song is more than just entertainment but a reflection of real-life struggles.

“Even the church acknowledges it now. Moneycetamol is a movement, not just a song!” she wrote.

With the rising cost of living, the conversation around money’s role in daily survival continues to gain traction, and Shatana appears to be enjoying every moment of the attention her song is receiving.

Lawyers for NPP’s Collins Amoah deny reports on tax fraud case

0

Collins Amoah is the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant for Ablekuma Central Collins Amoah is the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant for Ablekuma Central

The legal team of Collins Amoah, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant for Ablekuma Central, has denied their client’s involvement in tax fraud allegations leveled against him.

In a statement aimed at bringing clarity to the matter, the legal firm, Porta Legis Consultancy, stated that Collins Amoah neither received an amount of GH¢800,000 nor made any promise to reduce the complainant’s tax liability.

The statement dismissed the allegations as “framed” and asserted that Amoah was never invited by the court or summoned before the Circuit Court during the criminal proceedings following the complaint.

“At the outset, it must be emphatically stated that at no material time did our client receive the sum of GH¢800,000.00 from the complainant with the promise or representation of reducing his tax liability.

“The allegations, as framed, are premised on a fundamental misapprehension on the part of the complainant, exacerbated by our client’s mere association with the actual recipient of the funds. Any attempt to impute culpability to our client on the basis of proximity to the alleged transaction is factually unfounded and legally untenable,” parts of the statement issued on Monday, February 24, 2025, read.

The law firm attributed Amoah’s absence during court proceedings to the failure of the police or the court to invite him for questioning or inform him of the scheduled court date requiring his attendance.

However, the firm explained that their client became aware of the bench warrant for his arrest through various media reports and subsequently voluntarily submitted himself to the authorities to assist with the case.

“Further, it must be placed on record that at no point was our client notified, contacted, or summoned in respect of the commencement of the criminal proceedings before the Circuit Court. While he was aware that a complaint had been lodged with the police, he was neither invited for questioning nor apprised of the existence of any court dates requiring his attendance. As such, his absence from the proceedings was neither willful nor contemptuous but was, instead, a direct consequence of the failure to accord him due notice,” the statement added.

The statement continued, “It was only upon widespread media reportage concerning a bench warrant for his arrest purportedly issued against him that our client became apprised of the situation. Acting with utmost diligence and in deference to due process, he immediately curtailed his trip abroad and returned to Ghana, engaging legal representation to assert and safeguard his rights.

“His first formal appearance in court on the 19th of February, 2025, was thus a demonstration of his commitment to addressing the matter in accordance with the law.”

The statement strongly refuted claims that the allegations against Collins Amoah had been settled, describing them as false and deliberate attempts to misinform the public.

It clarified that the case was struck out by the Circuit Court due to a lack of evidence to substantiate the allegations.

Porta Legis further warned that legal action would be taken against individuals who continue to spread such falsehoods and misleading narratives.

“Most crucially, the Circuit Court, in the exercise of its judicial discretion, struck out the case after the prosecution, upon sober reflection on the facts, realized that their complaint lacked the requisite evidentiary foundation to sustain the charge or to secure a conviction. The court had no option than to strike out the case on the application by the prosecution. Any suggestion that the matter was settled is, therefore, a gross misrepresentation of the legal process and must be dismissed as pure misinformation.

“Accordingly, we urge all media houses, stakeholders, and the general public to desist from further dissemination of inaccurate and unverified information. Porta Legis Consultancy remains committed to defending the integrity, legal rights, and reputation of Mr. Collins Amoah, and we shall not hesitate to pursue all available legal remedies should these false narratives persist,” it concluded.

Collins Amoah was standing trial over his alleged involvement in a GH¢800,000 fraud case at Tse Addo, Accra.

According to court documents, Collins Amoah and a 51-year-old trader, Solomon Okuley, allegedly defrauded a businessman of GH¢800,000 under the pretext of using their political connections to clear his Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) tax debt.

The prosecution further accused the two of misappropriating the entire sum for their personal and political interests.

As part of their efforts to strengthen their attacking options, the Magpies have identified Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo as a key target for the upcoming summer transfer window.

Semenyo recently signed a new contract with Bournemouth, meaning Newcastle will need to present a lucrative offer to secure his signature.

7,000 killed since January in fighting in DRC, prime minister says

Residents cast their shadows as they observe members of the Congolese Red Cross conduct mass burial Residents cast their shadows as they observe members of the Congolese Red Cross conduct mass burial

Some 7,000 people have died since January in fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), its prime minister told a high-level meeting of the Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday.

Some 450,0000 people are without shelter after 90 displacement camps were destroyed, Judith Suminwa Tuluka added.

The M23’s advance is the gravest escalation in more than a decade of the long-running conflict in eastern Congo. The rebel group’s capture of swathes of the east and valuable mineral deposits has fanned fears of a wider war.

Rwanda rejects allegations from Congo, the United Nations and Western powers that it supports M23 with arms and troops.

The prime minister urged the world to act and to impose “dissuasive sanctions” amid mass displacements and summary executions.

“It is impossible to describe the screams and cries of millions of victims of this conflict,” she added.

In the opening remarks at the 58th UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, UN chief Antonio Guterres said that human rights around the world are being “suffocated” and referred to horrifying human rights abuses in the DRC.

Since the start of the year, the DRC has faced back-to-back losses in North and South Kivu provinces, fueling criticism of the authorities’ military strategy.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang urges council of state to be proactive

0

Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called on the Council of State to be an effective and accountable advisory body to contribute to the “Resetting of Ghana” Agenda.

Speaking at the first official engagement with the Council of State during an orientation for its members, on Monday February 24 at Peduase Lodge, she urged the members to be active in their role, rather than a passive one.

According to the Vice President, a proactive advisory body will aid in dispelling unfounded claims questioning the existence of the Council of State.

“Respectfully, you must therefore endeavour to contribute to the shaping of governance policy and ensure that major policy choices are meticulously guided by the principles of accountability, equity and long-term interest. Your tenure must redefine the council’s role, transforming it from a passively advisory body to an active institution that can anticipate challenges, offers bold recommendations and demand accountability.

“This requires engaging proactively, addressing policy gaps, commissioning research and ensuring government discussions prioritise the public’s interest,” she advised.

She further highlighted the urgent need to review the 1992 Constitution to address the imbalance of power in the arms of government and challenges in local governance and  called on the members of the Council to draw from their experience and contribute effectively in reviewing the 1992 Constitution.

Chieftaincy clash leaves 6 injured at Gomoa Obuasi

A violent chieftaincy clash at Gomoa Obuasi in the Central Region has left six people injured.

The injured include the head of the Asona Royal Family, Agya Amoh.

According to reports, the conflict erupted when supporters of one faction attacked their rivals during a community meeting, leading to injuries and significant property damage.

Accra-based Channel One News indicates that the violence stems from tensions following the installation of Kwabena Atta as the caretaker chief by Obrempong Nyanful Krampah, Omanhene of the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Council, who has authority over Gomoa Obuasi.

The appointment followed the passing of the substantive chief.

However, the town’s Regent has refused to hand over leadership to the newly appointed caretaker chief, leading to repeated confrontations between rival factions.

Eyewitnesses described the chaos during the attack, with stones hurled into the palace around 9 to 10 a.m., damaging several roofs and two vehicles.

“We were waiting to have a meeting when stones started flying into the palace,” recounted Nana Mbir Asomako.

“They destroyed parts of the palace and vehicles. They even claimed they don’t fear the police and will continue to terrorize us. We heard they planned to burn the entire place, so we had to evacuate. The police have been informed.”

A tragic accident involving an armoured military vehicle of the Ghana Armed Forces has resulted in the death of one soldier and injuries to six others near Saka, a suburb in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region.

The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2025, as the soldiers were traveling from Bawku to Bolgatanga.

A tire burst reportedly caused the driver to lose control, leading the vehicle to overturn.

Local residents assisted personnel from the Zebilla District Police Command in transporting the deceased and injured to the Zebilla District Hospital for medical attention.

This incident has raised concerns among residents about the frequent speeding of military vehicles in the area, which has led to multiple accidents and casualties in recent months.

‘Free ticket culture’ is killing Ghana’s event industry

0

UK-based Ghanaian event organiser, Bizzle UK-based Ghanaian event organiser, Bizzle

UK-based Ghanaian event organiser, Benny Sarfo, popularly known as Bizzle, has pointed out the pervasive “free ticket culture” in Ghana.

According to him, it is negatively impacting the event industry.

In an interview with content creator Kwadwo Sheldon, Bizzle expressed frustration over the constant demand for free tickets, which he says often leads to financial losses for event organizers.

“I know you. I’m putting on the show. Because you know me, you expect me to give you a free ticket. Everybody’s asking for a free ticket, and at the end of the day, I’m running at a loss,” he said.

He recounted an incident at Kweku Flick and Article Wan’s show where an individual claimed to be the personal videographer for one of the artistes.

Upon verification, the claim turned out to be false.

“Someone just pulled up, saying he was the personal videographer to one of them. I made a phone call to find out, and the artiste was like, ‘I have no clue.’

“So you see what I’m saying? Somebody will dress up, put their clothes on, and just pull up thinking, ‘I know someone, so I should get a free ticket,’” he explained.

The promoter emphasized that the free ticket culture is prevalent and damaging to the industry.

“Imagine if I’m giving out 200 free tickets or even 5 tickets; it’s a lot of money. At the end of the event, I’ve lost money,” he said.

Bizzle also revealed that he personally funds all his events from his pocket, making the financial strain even more significant.

“All my events I’ve done are funded from my pockets. I have funded every single show myself. So, giving out tickets can really destroy the business,” he added.

Overflowing sewer lines in Tema repaired, businesses resume operations

0

By Elizabeth Larkwor Baah

Tema, Feb. 24, GNA – Some business owners in Tema Community One have resumed full operations following the successful repair of blocked and overflowing sewer lines that had disrupted commercial activities in the central business area, especially the Community One market.

The sanitation issue, which affected parts of Tema Community One, including Casino, Centre, near the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), and the market, among others, posing health and environmental risks, has now been resolved, restoring cleanliness to the area.

For so many days, traders and business owners in the affected areas said they experienced a decline in customer traffic due to the unpleasant conditions caused by overflowing sewage.

They said the situation did not only discourage patronage but also raised concerns about outbreaks of communicable diseases, however, after an intervention by the Metro Waste Management Department, the problem has been addressed, bringing relief to residents and businesses.

A visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to the area revealed that areas that had hitherto had faeces gushing out from sewer chambers had been repaired, and the streets, walkways, and market areas were cleaned, with no traces of the spillage.

Local traders, shop owners, and residents have expressed their satisfaction with the repair works and have called on the authorities to provide a lasting solution to the community’s ageing sewer system.

They said the system had undergone many temporary repairs, which did not address the long-term challenges of the sewer issue, adding that the sewer system, constructed during the era of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was no longer suitable for the city’s growing population.

They said the outdated sewer lines frequently caused flooding, blockages, and sanitation problems in Tema and therefore needed to be changed as soon as possible, expressing the fear that, without a comprehensive upgrade, the system would continue to fail, leading to health risks and environmental pollution.

“This system was built when Tema had fewer people; now, with more people living and working here, the pipes and drains cannot handle the waste; we need a complete overhaul, not just temporary fixes,” Kwame Yeboah, a teacher, said.

“Every time there is a blockage, we suffer from bad smells and dirty water flowing through the market; sometimes we stop coming to sell for more than a week. This one that has been repaired will not last for more than three months,” he added.

He added that “there are times about 15 shops get closed when this particular one spoils; people will not buy anything, and because nobody will give you money to cure yourself when you get sick, you endure and stay home.”

Nana Ama Koranteng, a student nurse, said that “this aging sewer system could be a major health risk; if waste is not effectively managed, it can contaminate water sources and cause outbreaks of disease. The authorities must take this issue seriously.”

Mr. Joseph Boateng, a lace materials seller, stated “The government should prioritise this issue because it affects our daily lives; as Tema continues to expand, there’s the need for improved infrastructure to suit the current demand.”

‘The first rule to prosperity is to fear women’

0

Ghanaian gospel musician and preacher, Sonnie Badu Ghanaian gospel musician and preacher, Sonnie Badu

Ghanaian gospel musician and preacher, Sonnie Badu, has advised men to be cautious in how they associate with women.

In a video shared online February 23, 2025, Sonnie Badu indicated that before a man would prosper, he has to consider fearing women.

He emphasised that most women have the courage to slowly kill their partners without being remorseful.

“The first rule to prosperity in life is to fear women. A woman would poison you and still be smiling with you. Women are far smarter than men. After you have cheated on her, she would notice it because they are like detectives…

“You look at what she said to you that no woman has ever said to you, and it is to walk away from the house and never return,” he said.

Sonnie Badu added that both genders can be evil sometimes, however, women are more dangerous than men.

“It goes both ways, and not only women but men are physical, but women too react with words. Sometimes a woman’s words can cut a man’s throat.

“A woman can look at her husband and say you are good for nothing, and it’s been 20 years and still he hasn’t forgiven her for saying that,” he added.

The eviction notice and the building the public servants are being evicted from The eviction notice and the building the public servants are being evicted from

A number of public servants residing in apartments assigned to them by the Ministry of Works and Housing at Ridge are being evicted.

These public servants, who are between 80 to 88 in number, according to information obtained by GhanaWeb, include directors, deputy directors, and senior technocrats from the various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

The affected area has about 11 blocks, with each block containing 8 flats or apartments.

A notice of eviction posted on the buildings indicated that the occupants in the apartments are to move out by March 3, 2025.

The notice, which has a title “Office of the President,” reads as follows:

“Notice is hereby served to the occupants of this accommodation to pack out of this facility. Occupants have ten days to vacate the premises.

“Due Date is Monday, 3 March 2025 by 1:00 PM. Occupants are to note that no extensions will be granted.”

The Executive Secretary of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), Dr Isaac Bampoe Addo, speaking with GhanaWeb, corroborated the report of the eviction.

Speaking to GhanaWeb on Saturday, February 22, 2025, Dr Bampoe Addo indicated that the leadership of CLOGSAG is discussing the matter with the chief director of the ministry to understand the situation.

“We have just been told, so we are liaising with the chief director to actually appreciate what is happening. So, in due course, we would come out.

“That is what we are being told, and that is what they are telling us. We are getting in touch with the chief director to give us her part of the issue,” he said.

The eviction, should it happen, will not only affect the senior public servants, but also the hundreds of relations living with them.

The residents have also indicated that the brouhaha over the apartments started after the John Dramani Mahama government took office.

Although there has been no confirmation, the residents claim that members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) are behind the attempts to evict the public servants.

Wanda Nara, the ex-wife of former Argentina striker Mauro Icardi, is reportedly demanding a staggering €500,000 per month in financial compensation as she prepares for her divorce hearing from the Galatasaray forward.

The couple’s decade-long marriage, marked by multiple breakups and reconciliations, is now heading to court, with the first hearing set for March 11 in Milan.

The high-profile legal battle is expected to attract significant media attention, with cameras set to swarm the Milan courthouse as Nara and Icardi clash over financial settlements, child custody, and property division, according to reports from Corriere della Sera and RMC Sport.

According to Corriere della Sera, the 38-year-old TV presenter and former agent of Icardi is demanding substantial maintenance payments to sustain the luxurious lifestyle she became accustomed to during their marriage.

Icardi, represented by his lawyer Valeria De Vellis, is set to contest Nara’s financial demands in court.

Adding further intrigue to the case is the involvement of Argentine actress and model China Suárez, who was allegedly linked to Icardi in an affair that led to his initial split from Nara during his time at Paris Saint-Germain.

Suárez, now in a relationship with Icardi, is reportedly planning to move to Istanbul once he recovers from his knee injury.

Meanwhile, Icardi has launched a legal battle of his own, seeking custody of the couple’s daughters, Francesca and Isabella.

The former Inter Milan captain wants his daughters to join him in Istanbul, where he currently resides and plays for Galatasaray.

The President would have been a professor – Minister-designate hits back at Martin Kpebu

0

Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba has responded to Martin Kpebu’s criticism of her experience

Minister of State-designate for Public Sector Reforms, Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, has hit back at private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu for calling her experience into question following her nomination by President John Dramani Mahama.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, February 24, 2025, the minister-designate affirmed her readiness to deliver on the mandate, adding that experience is not the sole determinant of suitability to occupy public office.

“My responsibility at the ministry is to collaborate and provide leadership so that the structures at the ministry will work. The president has interacted with me; he knows my capabilities, and I don’t think he has made a mistake by appointing me as the public sector reforms minister. I want to assure Ghanaians and lawyer Martin Kpebu that if it were about experience, they would have asked professors to be the president of this country because they have a lot of experience—they have learned a lot—or the minister for health should have been a professor and not any other person,” she said.

Speaking in a recent Joy FM interview, Martin Kpebu criticized Madam Akanvariba for lacking the necessary experience to lead the ministry.

“Straight answer: by her credentials, she is not, and I can’t say otherwise. By her credentials, she is not,” he stated.

According to the lawyer, the minister-designate, who has a health background, lacks the educational background and experience in public sector reform.

“It is too glaring that, by paper qualifications, she is not the right candidate, and when it comes to practice, she doesn’t carry it either,” he said.

He thus called on President Mahama to justify his nomination of Lydia Lamisi.

“I believe we should ask for an interview, and the president should respectfully and specifically give us insights into what went into that decision,” Mr. Kpebu said.

A/R NPP MPs reject claims of bias in regional caucus elections

0

The Ashanti Caucus of Members of Parliament has refuted reports alleging that the recent Ashanti Regional Caucus election was influenced by political affiliations, specifically with the former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In a press statement signed by Old Tafo legislator Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Caucus labelled such claims as entirely false and an attempt to mislead the public.

The statement outlined that the election process adhered strictly to democratic principles, ensuring fairness and transparency.

The Caucus stressed that there was no external interference or favouritism, and the results were based solely on the independent choices of its members.

Additionally, the caucus rejected reports that Nana Ayew Afriyie received only eight votes in the election, describing the claim as factually incorrect.

They maintained that any attempt to present such figures was a deliberate effort to spread misinformation.

The statement further clarified that Nana Ayew Afriyie was not present at the election, did not campaign, and had formally communicated his decision not to contest any leadership position.

The Caucus asserted that any suggestion to the contrary was completely false.

Reaffirming their commitment to democracy, fairness, and transparency, the Ashanti Caucus called on the public and party supporters to disregard the misleading reports.

They assured members of their dedication to unity and progress within both the Caucus and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Akwaaba UK CEO Denies ‘Sabotage’ Allegation

0

Dennis Tawiah

Dennis Tawiah, CEO of Akwaaba UK, has refuted allegations made by Chief Stylz, Stonebwoy’s manager, that they want to ruin the dancehall artiste’s impending album tour in the UK.

Tawiah was stating his views during a phone-in session on Hitz FM when he got into a heated disagreement and eventually lost it with Chief Stylz, who was also “phoned in” at the same time.

When Stonebwoy’s manager made the accusations of sabotage, he mentioned that his team had booked the UK album tour for March 8 back in October, only to discover in January that Akwaaba UK had also planned an Independence performance for the same day.

The CEO of Akwaaba UK contended that his group had scheduled their performance for March 8, well in advance of Stonebwoy’s album tour announcement.

The manager of Stonebwoy, however, maintained that his team was the first to reserve the specified date. The CEO of Akwaaba UK became enraged over this, and threatened to make public the discussion that occurred between Stonebwoy’s staff and his camp.

The management of Stonebwoy stated, “I am well aware of the role you have been playing, not just in the life of Stonebwoy but in all Ghanaian artistes,” without discrediting the fact that they have been receiving assistance from Akwaaba UK regarding performances in the UK.

Dennis Tawiah, unwilling to let go of the sabotage allegations made against his team, further argued that Stonebwoy and his team only reached out to him on January 2025 about the album tour and their ‘8th March’ date.

Kennedy Agyapong supports expansion of NPP electoral college

0

Former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has expressed support for the call to expand the New Patriotic Party (NPP) electoral college.

Speaking at the Freshers’ Orientation and General Meeting of the TESCON branch at the College of Health and Well-Being in Kintampo, Bono East Region, Agyapong emphasized that the expansion would allow for more inclusivity while maintaining the integrity of the party’s structure.

He highlighted the importance of including more members to foster a sense of ownership, reduce apathy, and strengthen democracy within the party.

Agyapong also voiced strong support for the role of TESCON members, recognizing their critical contribution to youth mobilization and the projection of NPP on various platforms.

He urged senior members of the party and former appointees to support TESCON and enhance its influence across tertiary education campuses.

Regarding the suggestion to increase TESCON’s voting rights from two to five per institution, Agyapong endorsed the idea of granting all TESCON executives from accredited institutions voting rights during internal elections, which he believes would boost youth participation.

In recognition of their dedication, Agyapong expressed gratitude to TESCON members for their loyalty to the party.

He encouraged them to continue their efforts as the NPP works toward regaining power in 2028.

As part of his support, he made an undisclosed financial donation to assist the group’s activities and committed to funding TESCON branches across the country.

He reaffirmed this commitment when he visited TESCON members at the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Sunyani, Bono Region, later that day.

Democracy Hub, CPP sue to drop Kotoka’s name from Ghana’s International Airport

0

Democracy Hub, and the Convention People’s Party (CPP), have jointly filed a lawsuit at the Supreme Court seeking the removal of “Kotoka” from the country’s International airport.

They contend that honouring Lieutenant-General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a key figure in the 1966 coup d’état, contradicts Ghana’s democratic values.

In a statement issued on Monday, February 24, the group asserted that retaining Kotoka’s name on a national monument signifies state endorsement of unconstitutional actions.

They advocate for renaming the airport to reaffirm Ghana’s commitment to democratic governance.

“For 59 years, Ghana has lived with the contradiction of denouncing coups while honouring one of the architects of the first military overthrow of an elected government.

“It is time for Ghana to make a clear statement that it stands against unconstitutional rule, not just in rhetoric but in practice.”

Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka (26 September 1926 – 17 April 1967) was a Ghanaian military officer instrumental in the 24 February 1966 coup d’état that overthrew President Kwame Nkrumah’s government.

Born in Alakple, Volta Region, Kotoka enlisted in the Gold Coast Regiment in 1947 and rose through the ranks.

Following the coup, he served on the National Liberation Council until his assassination during a failed counter-coup on 17 April 1967

National Petroleum Authority Announces New Price Floor for Petroleum Products

0

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has introduced a new price floor for petroleum products, effective from February 16 to 28, 2025. The regulation sets a minimum price of GH₵12.56 per liter for petrol, GH₵13.45 per liter for diesel, and GH₵14.26 per kilogram for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) ¹.

This move aims to prevent price distortions, ensure market stability, and promote transparency within the downstream petroleum sector. The NPA has urged Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and LPG Marketing Companies (LPGMCs) to comply with the minimum price, warning that non-compliance may result in regulatory sanctions.

The price floor is aligned with the Petroleum Pricing Guidelines, which seeks to promote sustainability in the fuel market. However, it’s worth noting that the announced prices exclude premiums charged by International Oil Trading Companies (IOTCs) and the operating margins of Bulk Import, Distribution, and Export Companies (BIDECs).

Despite these exclusions, the introduction of a price floor is expected to curb unhealthy competition and undercutting practices among industry players. By enforcing a minimum price, the NPA seeks to create a more predictable and balanced pricing structure, ultimately benefiting consumers and ensuring fair business practices.

With deregulation still in place, companies retain the flexibility to set their prices above the stipulated floor, ensuring profitability while safeguarding the interests of consumers and stakeholders alike.

Dr. Ayew didn’t contest for any position – Ashanti Parliamentary Caucus

0

Some of the members of the Ashanti NPP Caucus Some of the members of the Ashanti NPP Caucus

The Ashanti Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) has denied claims that the Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, suffered a heavy defeat in its leadership elections.

In a statement issued by its secretary, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, who is MP for Old Tafo, the Ashanti NPP Caucus refuted reports that the leadership election was biased in favour of Dr.

The statement further emphasized, “More importantly, he had formally communicated to the Interim Management Committee ahead of the event that he was not interested in contesting for any leadership position. Any claims to the contrary are a complete fabrication aimed at misleading the public.”

The caucus reiterated its commitment to ensuring that its internal elections are conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner.
