Ghana marked World Tourism Day 2025 with a colourful and culturally rich celebration of the Some Tutuza Festival in the Volta Region, under the global theme: “Tourism, and Sustainable Transformation.”

The national event spotlighted the transformative power of tourism and culture in promoting peace, unity, and economic development.

The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, led the national celebration at the Agbozume School Park, where the grand durbar took place, bringing together chiefs, government officials, and citizens from the Aflao, Some, and Klikor traditional areas.

“Every visitor who enters Ghana through Aflao first experiences the warmth, hospitality, and cultural richness of our people. We must showcase our community as a place of opportunity, unity, and peace,” the minister stated, emphasizing the need to invest in cultural festivals as tools for national pride and community development.

Representing President John Dramani Mahama, who is attending the UN General Assembly in New York, Dr Goosie Tannoh, Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development, delivered the President’s message.

He lauded the people of Some for preserving their cultural heritage and promoting peace through tradition.

“This festival is a living testimony to our ancestors’ generosity and our people’s courage to build a peaceful future,” Dr. Tannoh remarked, while highlighting the government’s flagship 24-Hour Economy Program.

He noted that the initiative would support youth in creative arts, agro-processing, and cooperative ventures through improved infrastructure and innovation.

The Some Tutuza Festival, held under the theme “Consolidating Peace and Unity for Social, Cultural, and Economic Development,” served as both a cultural celebration and strategic platform to advance Ghana’s tourism agenda.

The event fused traditional rites, performances, and dialogue to draw national and international attention to the Volta Region’s rich heritage.

Torgbuiga Adamah III, President of the Some Traditional Area, expresses his heartfelt gratitude to the Government of Ghana, especially to President John Dramani Mahama, for his visionary leadership and continued support for the sustainable development of the region.

He extended his sincere appreciation to the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts for choosing the Volta Region as the host of this year’s World Tourism Day celebration, thereby bringing well-deserved national attention and in recognition of their exemplary leadership and contributions, both President John Mahama and the Minister/MP were honored by the people of the Some Traditional Area.

The celebrations welcomed a lot of dignitaries, including the National Chairman of the ruling NDC party, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Directors of the Ministry, and Agency heads, and traditional rulers, alongside other distinguished personalities and government officials.

Some Tutuza Festival, commemorating the Some people’s historic migration from Keta, is a vital annual celebration that fosters cultural revival, community pride, and economic stimulation through cultural tourism.

By integrating World Tourism Day with the Some Tutuza Festival, stakeholders hope to amplify Ghana’s global cultural presence, strengthen cross-cultural exchange, and boost tourism-led development across the country.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has claimed that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has seized 15 of his luxury vehicles.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, the NPP regional chairman asserted that his vehicles had been seized by the security agency for no reason.

He said that he bought the vehicles from a legitimate car dealer, who had paid all the required fees.

“I have been quiet. As we are talking now, 15 of my cars have been confiscated by EOCO. I bought all the cars from Bright (sic). Bright (sic) is close to the NPP office at Asylum Down.

“He has the right registration. He paid the port fees and everything. My Bentley, Rolls-Royce, my Land Cruiser (have been taken), but I have been quiet because I don’t want to be talking about my own issues,” he said.

Wontumi under investigation for international organised crime – Deputy AG

He added, “I want to end this conversation here. One day, God will speak for me.”

It is not clear whether the seizure of the vehicles has to do with Wontumi’s recent detention by EOCO.

The Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem Sai, disclosed that the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for multiple criminal offences.

These include fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

Chairman Wontumi released by EOCO

In a statement posted on social media on Thursday, May 29, 2025, Justice Srem Sai disclosed that Wontumi, who had been in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) since Tuesday, was also implicated in a second strand of investigation linked to a broader international organised crime scheme.

The Deputy Attorney General emphasised that EOCO is collaborating closely with international law enforcement partners to probe this complex network of alleged criminal activities.

Ntim Fordjour invokes scripture to back Bawumia’s 2028 bid

0

New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has invoked scripture to rally support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid to lead the party in 2028, stressing that God does not discriminate by religion or ethnicity in choosing leaders.

Speaking on the second day of Dr. Bawumia’s campaign tour of the Central Region on Tuesday, September 30, ahead of the NPP’s January 31, 2026, presidential primaries, Rev. Ntim Fordjour said the Bible affirms that “God is no respecter of persons” and can anoint anyone to lead His people into prosperity.

“I am a Christian and a Pastor. My Bible tells me that God is no respecter of persons. He can anoint anyone regardless of religious or ethnic background to lead his people into prosperity,” he declared to party faithful.

Rev. Fordjour stated that he has witnessed “such an anointing” upon Dr Bawumia, describing the former Vice President as the one chosen to lead the NPP into its “promised land” in 2028.

He called on members of the NPP to set aside religious and ethnic considerations and focus on competence in selecting the party’s presidential candidate.

“Let’s put aside our religious beliefs and ethnic backgrounds and look for the most suitable for the job,” he urged.

The Assin South lawmaker further encouraged NPP delegates and leaders to evaluate all prospective candidates from both the NPP and NDC ahead of the 2028 general elections.

He argued that Dr Bawumia stands out as the most formidable candidate capable of securing victory for the party.

“Let’s consider all the people seeking to lead both the NPP and NDC in 2028 and compare who in the NDC can compete with Dr Bawumia. Let’s not miss this opportunity to secure power in 2028,” he emphasised.

Franklin Cudjoe slams endless dialogues on illegal mining ahead of presidency’s CSOs engagement

0

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has urged the government to move beyond dialogue and take decisive action to tackle the illegal mining crisis (galamsey), warning that the time for endless discussions has long passed.

His remarks come in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s invitation to leading civil society organisations (CSOs) for a high-level meeting at the Jubilee House on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 12:00 noon.

Chamber of Indigenous Business slams Fourth Estate over “misleading” NLA-KGL deal

0

The Chamber of Indigenous Business and Investors (CIBI) has strongly criticised The Fourth Estate and the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) over what it describes as an unethical and misleading investigation into the National Lottery Authority’s (NLA) licencing arrangement with KGL Technology Limited.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Mr. Alistair Nelson, the Chamber accused the Fourth Estate of sensationalism and gross misrepresentation of facts regarding the NLA-KGL deal, particularly claims that a GHS3 billion lottery business was handed over to KGL for only GHS170 million annually.

CIBI argued that the so-called “contract” between NLA and KGL is not a procurement contract, but a licencing agreement, issued legally by the NLA Board under the National Lotto Act, 2006 (Act 722) and its accompanying regulations.

“It is very misleading for the Fourth Estate and MFWA to conclude that the NLA-KGL deal is a contract. That is very unprofessional,” the statement read.

Addressing the claim that KGL was given a GHS3 billion business, the Chamber said historical data from NLA shows that the Authority had never generated GHS3 billion annually since its establishment.

According to the CIBI, the total revenue generated by the NLA over eight years (2013–2020) was approximately GHS2.7 billion, with GHS1.3 billion paid out in winnings during that period.

The statement also defended the value of the KGL arrangement, pointing out that between 2019 and 2024, KGL’s annual payments of GHS170 million to the Consolidated Fund far exceeded the amounts paid by the NLA itself between 2013 and 2020. “In fact, the deal with KGL is one of the best the NLA has had,” the Chamber said.

CIBI further noted that KGL bears all operational and financial risks involved in the 5/90 USSD lottery game — including infrastructure costs, prize payments, marketing, and taxes — with no state financial input.

The statement also dismissed claims of monopoly, explaining that exclusive USSD codes are standard practice for all licensed lottery operators, with other companies also operating exclusive codes for specific games.

In conclusion, the Chamber called the Fourth Estate’s investigation “bogus” and “malicious,” urging the media to uphold higher standards of accuracy and professionalism, especially when dealing with technical and commercial matters involving state institutions and indigenous businesses.

Stakeholders in the technology and innovation ecosystem have welcomed the newly developed Ghana Artificial Intelligence (AI) Practitioners’ Guide (GAIPG) as a step in the right direction for ethical and localized innovations in artificial intelligence in the country.

Speaking at the official launch of the document in Accra, A renowned public relations and IT communications consultant, Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, asserted that the guidebook was timely for sound policy formulation and legislation to underpin the rapid adoption and integration of artificial intelligence in Ghana.

“As a practical guide that will influence policy, it is highly fulfilling and I’ll encourage tech enthusiasts, innovators and policymakers to explore the provisions and recommendation in the book as we continue to shape AI application in all aspects of our work,” he said.

‘Bahubali forced me into a fight I never wanted’ – Jacob Dickson

0

Ghanaian boxer, Jacob Dickson, has revealed that he never wanted to fight Ernest Akushey, popularly known as Bahubali, before the tragic bout that allegedly ended the latter’s life.

Bahubali passed away on September 23, 2025, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, eleven days after suffering a technical knockout defeat to Dickson at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

The incident has cast a shadow over the boxing community and placed Dickson firmly under the spotlight.

Speaking in an interview with Joel Eshun on GhanaWeb, Dickson explained that the fight was never part of his plans because Bahubali was not in his weight class.

Jacob Dickson reveals he once dreamed of playing for Man United like his idol Ronaldo

“I didn’t even have that mindset to fight with Bahubali because he’s not my weight class. Moreover, I had never thought about fighting with him,” he said.

According to Dickson, it was Bahubali who initiated the challenge after watching his June 2025 fight against Andrew.

“Bahubali watched my recent fight with Andrew in June and because I couldn’t get the chance to win, he thought I’m a weak boxer,” Dickson recounted. “Even though he was not my weight class, he thought because of the performance I had, he could beat me.”

Dickson added that Bahubali began taunting him publicly and using social media to escalate the situation.

“He was listening and following people’s advice. He started throwing shots, using his phone to do videos and post online,” he explained. “It came to a time that it became worse, so I even came out to say any promoter that will do it, I’ll fight. So he went to call the promoter, Lord Coleman, to arrange the fight.”

The fight eventually went ahead on September 12, 2025, ending in tragedy and leaving Dickson shaken.

US backs new $10 billion airport in Ethiopia

0

A ground crew member guides an Ethiopian Airlines at Bole International Airport A ground crew member guides an Ethiopian Airlines at Bole International Airport

The US says it will support the construction of a new international airport in Ethiopia, marking President Donald Trump’s first major business initiative in the country.

Trump’s special envoy said Washington will provide significant financial backing for the new airport at Bishoftu, about 40 km south of Addis Ababa. The facility is intended to ease pressure on the overused Bole International Airport and bolster Ethiopian Airlines’ position as Africa’s largest carrier.

The $10 billion airport will cover 34 square km and handle international passenger and cargo traffic, while Bole will continue to serve domestic operations.

US Senior Advisor for Africa Massad Boulos announced the plan on his X account on September 29, following a state visit to Ethiopia.

“I’m just coming from Ethiopia, and I came back straight to Unga (United Nations General Assembly) from Ethiopia, where we talked about our support for the new airport project, and it is going to be probably the biggest airport and one of the biggest in the world. It’s a $10 billion project, probably more,” Boulos said.

“The DFC and other institutions are supporting. We are also working closely with many projects relating to Boeing. Boeing has a very, very strong partnership, as we know, with Ethiopian Airlines, with Royal Air Maroc, with many other airlines across the continent including Gabon and Angola and the DRC – and many others, too numerous to list,” he added, referring to the US International Development Finance Corporation.

The greenfield Bishoftu International Airport will initially accommodate 60 million passengers, expanding to 110 million, and transport 3.73 million tonnes of cargo annually, according to a prospectus.

Groundworks are expected to begin late 2025, with Phase I scheduled for completion by November 2029.

The project will also feature an “airport city” with shopping malls, hotels, recreation areas, and direct rail and expressway links to Addis Ababa.

In August, the African Development Bank (AfDB) signed an agreement to act as lead arranger and global coordinator to mobilise nearly $8 billion of the project’s cost, with plans to finance $500 million, subject to board approval.

Ethiopian Airlines and the AfDB had signed a letter of intent to fund the airport project in Abusera in March.

The airport, designed by Dubai-based Sidara, will include four runways, capacity for 100 million passengers a year, and parking for 270 aircraft. It is seen as a key driver of regional growth and part of Ethiopian Airlines’ 2035 strategy focused on network expansion, infrastructure, and human capital development.

AfDB views regional transport as central to its integration agenda, alongside food security, energy security, and clean energy transition.

Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier, continues to expand aggressively. In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024, it reported record revenues of $7.02 billion, up 14 percent year-on-year, and carried 17.1 million passengers, with 13.4 million on international routes and 3.7 million domestically.

King Charles waves knife in air after unusual visitor to London home causes havoc

King Charles donned his sunglasses as he welcomed a prize-winning cow to a special party in the garden of Clarence House today, which stomped into one of the hedges

The King welcomed a very unusual visitor to Clarence House today for a special party.

Charles hosted a reception in the garden of his London residence to mark £50million from his Duchy Originals sales that have benefitted more than 1,000 good causes. The monarch, who donned sunglasses for the party, met pedigree Sussex cow ‘Poppy’, from a Duchy farm, who bagged an invite to the event.

Handler Leighton Snelgrove, 26, thanked the King “for all you do for young farmers”. The breeding cow, which has won multiple prizes at country shows, made the King laugh as she knocked over a small table and stomped into a low hedge. Leighton said to the King: “Sorry about your garden.”

Turning round, the King, smiling and looking relaxed at the antics, said to other guests: “Don’t push her back into my boxed hedge.” Minutes later, after the King walked away to speak to other guests Poppy the cow urinated on the pathway.

Speaking afterwards, Leighton, of Black Ven Farm, Uckfield, East Sussex said: “She [Poppy] was amazing and thoroughly enjoyed it and it was great to talk to him about farming. I said thank you for everything you do for young farmers. The King has been a huge support and encouraging to young farmers.”

Asked about Poppy’s run-in with the hedges, Leighton said: “I didn’t want footprints over his lawn. He said it’s fine, don’t worry about it. He’s an inspiration to younger generations.”

The King held the reception to mark 35 years since establishing Duchy Originals to support sustainable farming and provide a market for organic goods from small farmers.

The party also celebrated the £50million raised from sales that has been handed to the King Charles III Charitable Fund (KCCF) and shared to more than 1,000 charities since the Duchy joined forces with Waitrose in 2009.

Representatives from many of the charities attended including the Soil Association, Prince’s Trust International, Coast, BirdLife International, Plantlife, and The King’s Foundation.

The King also met Mex, 9, a cockerpoo, and Monty, a 20-month-old Australian labradoodle, from Wag & Company, which sends dogs into care homes to help elderly people combat loneliness. Charles also saw new Duchy Originals product ranges and eco-friendly packaging.

In a speech, Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London, Sir Kenneth Olisa, said: “The 50 million raised to date has had a profound and far-reaching impact towards transforming lives and building sustainable communities.”

James Bailey, Waitrose executive director, also gave a speech saying the organic initiative carries out an “enormous amount of good.” And said the Duchy brand will “continue to fulfill the organic wish”.

He hailed the charity money legacy as “your success”, adding it was an “honour to share it with you”. Charles finished the engagement by cutting a Waitrose fruit cake and waving the knife in the air. He said: “I hope you enjoy the cake!”

All aspirants are honourable, but.. – Wontumi [Listen]

0

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, has expressed confidence that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will win the party’s upcoming presidential primaries.

He explained in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, that Bawumia is effectively going unopposed in the primaries and that those who supported him in the last elections have not regretted their choice.

Wontumi said party members are united in their support for Dr. Bawumia and believe he will emerge the winner, noting that the NPP is a single party working together.

“I see that Bawumia is going for the primaries unopposed, although we are having elections. Those who voted for him in the last elections have not regretted their choice,” he said.

Wontumi stressed the importance of respectful campaigning, urging party members to avoid insulting or attacking other candidates.

He said all discussions and engagements should be encouraging and focused on the party’s unity.

“The only thing I won’t condone is insulting others. You can campaign for your candidate, but do not attack anyone. All talks should be encouraging, not insulting,” he noted.

He also praised the quality of the candidates contesting the primaries, stating that Dr. Bawumia is the most suitable choice given his experience as former Vice President and as a previous presidential candidate for the party.

Wontumi added that it is his wish for Dr. Bawumia to win both the primaries and the general elections so he can serve as president for all Ghanaians.

“I am happy the NPP has great people contesting, unlike other parties, but Bawumia is the best among them. He has served as Vice President and was our previous candidate. It is better we give him the chance. It is my wish he wins the primaries and the general elections so he can become president for all of us,” he said.

According to a recent poll by Global Info Analytics, Dr. Bawumia leads the NPP presidential primaries with 47% of delegate support.

The poll, published on September 29, 2025, shows him as the clear front-runner, although a significant number of delegates remain undecided, indicating that the race could still change in the coming weeks.

Govt promises to include new teachers’ 13-month salary arrears in 2026 Budget

0

Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem has assured the coalition of unpaid teachers that payment of their 13-month salary arrears will be included in the 2026 budget presentation.

This follows the submission of a petition by the group to the Finance Ministry as part of their protest demanding government action on salary arrears.

Receiving the petition on Tuesday, September 30, Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem reassured the group that the payment of their salary arrears would be incorporated into the next budget presentation, scheduled to be presented to Parliament next month.

“I was a teacher, and I was posted to teach, and I was not paid for 8 months. I can relate perfectly well with all of you. The Finance Minister [Dr Ato Forson] says he sympathises with you, and he has briefed President John Dramani Mahama, and he has been given the green light to make sure he fixes your problem.

He added, “The Finance Minister will present the next budget, and he will make provision for all of you to be catered for; you should be very happy that your problem will be fixed; that is the good news. You will be paid.”

Meanwhile, the protesters remain dissatisfied with the development, describing it as inhumane, as they must wait several more months to receive their unpaid salaries.

“This is inhumane; we’re not ready for the 2026 budget. I’m even disappointed that he couldn’t even come to talk to us, but sent his deputy. It means we’re not worth his attention,” he stated.

MFWA empowers young investigative journalists to lead fight against corruption

0

Newly-trained investigative journalists under the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) program have been urged to use their craft as a weapon against corruption and impunity in Ghana.

Procurement breaches, conflicts of interest, abuse of office and other corruption activities which have eaten deep into the social structure of Ghana deny citizens development.

The young investigative journalists are empowered to lead the fight against corruption, spark accountability to bring meaningful change.

Ghana’s score on the Corruption Perception Index has shown a long-time stagnation of the fight against corruption, staying below the 50% mark since 2012.

In a call for deeper tackling of the canker, the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) through its capacity-building on anti-corruption and accountability, has reiterated the craft of young investigative journalists as effective tools for reforms.

Seasoned investigative journalists, including Associate Editor of the Fourth Estate, Seth Bokpe insist that true sense of journalism is recognized by the impact of deep-cut investigative journalism.

“We do not tell stories for telling sake. Some are told as passing information to the public, but majorly, what should be pursued are ones told to make an impact in our society through investigative journalism. The stories should reflect in ways that can drive a change in society.

“That should be the hallmark of every journalist. The impact is necessary to bring changes, draw benevolent people to help the disadvantaged. Even if your story changes the life of one person, it brings a lot of satisfaction than any form of enticement that you may get from the work,” he said.

The capacity-building on anti-corruption and accountability through investigative journalism project, benefitted 30 young journalists across the Ashanti, Northern, and Greater Accra regions.

The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) project, with funding from the German Development Cooperation was titled, “Countering corruption through accountability journalism and improved freedom of expression environment in Ghana”.

Beneficiaries were taken through the corruption landscape of Ghana, and story ideation, whilst dissecting investigative reports to understand investigative journalism targeted at public accountability.

Executive Director, Africa Centre for International Law and Accountability (ACILA), William Nyarko, says an in-depth story done well can effect significant social change in Ghana.

“It’s been engaging. We have shown them where they can get their stories to investigate, ones that bother on procurement breaches, conflict of interest, private gain, as well the methods and tools to gather and execute their investigations. The journey is difficult and challenging, but just one report done right will create significant changes in Ghana,” he said.

This initiative is part of the Participation, Accountability, Integrity for a Resilient Democracy (PAIReD) programme, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), co-financed by the EU and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), and implemented by GIZ in cooperation with the Ministry of Finance.

Government to allocate 5% DACF to spatial planning at MMDAs – Ahmed Ibrahim

Correspondence from Bono Region

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced that the government will allocate five percent of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) to support spatial planning activities across Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) starting next year.

The minister made this pledge at the maiden National Dialogue on Decentralisation and Responsive Governance forum in Accra, following a strong appeal from the National President of the Local Government Service Association of Physical Planners, Planner Gifty Nyarko, who is also the African Ambassador for Inclusive Urban Governance and Climate-Resilient Development.

Planner Gifty Nyarko had emphasised the urgent need for intervention, noting that many MMDAs continue to neglect spatial planning in their development priorities. She emphasised the crucial role of spatial planning in managing urban growth, infrastructure, and environmental sustainability, urging the Ministry to provide targeted support to enhance the sector.

In response, the Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to evidence-based planning, stressing that the five percent allocation would enhance the capacity of MMDAs by providing tools, data systems, and human resources needed to implement orderly and climate-resilient development frameworks.

Whilst urging the various assemblies to use part of their Internally Generated Funds (IGF) in the interim to support spatial planning activities while awaiting the release of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), the minister also appealed to local authorities to fast-track permit acquisition processes to curb unauthorised developments that undermine effective land use and infrastructure coordination.

He reaffirmed the government’s broader “Reset” agenda to strengthen decentralisation, assuring stakeholders that the move reflects a deliberate effort to equip local governments with the tools and resources needed to manage development proactively and inclusively.

Ghana considers Russian Floating Nuclear Plant for short-to medium-term power needs

0

Dr Robert Sogbadji is the Deputy Director in charge of Alternative and Nuclear Energy Dr Robert Sogbadji is the Deputy Director in charge of Alternative and Nuclear Energy

The Deputy Director in charge of Alternative and Nuclear Energy at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Dr Robert Mawuko Sogbadji, has said that Russia is in talks with Ghana over a possible deployment of three floating power units (FPUs) of 100MW each to help strengthen the country’s power supply in the short term.

He explained that floating nuclear plants are increasingly attractive because of their flexibility, mobility, and scalability.

Speaking to GhanaWeb Business at the just-ended World Atomic Week in Moscow, Dr Sogbadji emphasised that the idea of generating power from a vessel is not new to Ghana, citing the country’s experience with the Karpowership project.

Russia, Ghana to explore floating nuclear power deal

“We are already producing power from a floating vessel in the form of Karpowership, so this concept is not new to us. With our Nuclear Regulatory Authority and the Environmental Protection Agency in place, coupled with guidance from the International Atomic Energy Agency and Russia’s Rosatom regulator, the process will be well-governed,” he stated.

Short-term solution ahead of large-scale nuclear power

According to him, FPUs could help bridge potential electricity shortfalls while Ghana advances plans for a large-scale, land-based nuclear power plant capable of generating over 1,000MW.

He emphasised that floating power units are easier to deploy in the short term, providing a stop-gap solution for the country’s growing power needs.

On financing, Dr Sogbadji stressed the importance of structuring a model that balances affordability with industrial demand.

“Because this is nuclear, it cannot be entirely private-sector driven. Government must participate, even if only by 10–15%, but in a way that keeps costs low for both domestic and industrial consumers,” he explained.

He added that Ghana is not seeking outright ownership of the floating units, as this could push costs higher. Instead, the government is considering a public-private partnership (PPP) model, focusing on independent power production under strict regulatory oversight.

Grid capacity not a constraint

Addressing concerns about whether Ghana’s grid can absorb nuclear-generated electricity, Dr Sogbadji dismissed fears of transmission challenges.

“GRIDCo’s transmission losses are within internationally accepted limits. Integrating a 100MW baseload from each floating power unit will not be a problem. Even Karpowership delivers 400MW, so handling FPUs will not present difficulties,” he assured.

He further praised nuclear power for its efficiency, reliability, and ability to provide consistent baseload electricity to support Ghana’s industrialisation agenda.

South Africa says its optimistic US trade initiative AGOA will be renewed

The priority for South Africa is to get AGOA extended The priority for South Africa is to get AGOA extended

South Africa’s trade minister Parks Tau said he was optimistic that the United States’ flagship trade initiative with Africa, which expires later on Tuesday, would be renewed.

Tau’s office said in a statement that the overall message from the minister’s recent trip to the United States was that there was “broad support for the renewal of AGOA (the African Growth and Opportunity Act) in Congress across the aisle”.

“On the period of renewal for AGOA, the consensus suggests that AGOA may be renewed for a short-period of between one-to-three years to allow Congress to introduce changes and improvements to the programme,” the statement said.

The priority for South Africa is to get AGOA extended even if it is just for a short period, Tau added.

South Africa is trying to persuade President Donald Trump’s administration to lower the 30% tariff imposed in August on its exports to the U.S.

Tau met U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer this month in Washington as part of the negotiations to reduce the tariff.

Majesty Mensah Looks All Grown, Shares Warm Hug With Nana Ama McBrown In Heartwarming Video

Actress Nana Ama McBrown melted hearts after warmly embracing Shatta Wale’s son, Majesty, during a recent visit by his mother, Michy. The celebrated actress expressed amazement at how big and grown Majesty looked, sparking affectionate reactions online.

Majesty, who turned 10 in July 2025, celebrated the milestone with a lavish science-themed birthday party at a water park in Accra. Michy, his mother, went all out for the celebration, which was attended by friends and family.

In a video shared online, McBrown is seen happily hugging Majesty as Michy, Shatta Wale’s former partner, visited her home. The actress exchanged a few words with the young boy, even playfully asking him a question that seemed to confuse him. The wholesome moment quickly made waves on social media.

McBrown later linked up with Michy, and the pair shared another warm interaction that further delighted fans.

Majesty’s 10th birthday was celebrated on July 11, 2025, at a popular water park in Accra. The party was science-themed and featured games, water slides, and a lively pool session. Michy herself joined in the fun, jumping into the pool while fully dressed in her jalabia.

While the event was widely praised, Shatta Wale was noticeably absent. The dancehall star and Michy have had a strained relationship since their breakup in 2022. Over the years, Michy has publicly accused him of shirking his parental responsibilities, though she insists she has never stopped him from seeing his son.

Beyond his birthday, Majesty has been seen enjoying outdoor activities with Michy. In an earlier video, he confidently rode a quad bike, impressing his mother, who proudly shared the moment online.

The growing bond between Majesty and his mother, along with moments like his sweet hug with McBrown, continue to win admiration from fans.

Abronye accepts NPP disciplinary summons, calls for live broadcast to justify Ken Agyapong’s ‘anti-Christ’ actions

0

The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has issued a response to a disciplinary summons from the party.

He expressed his readiness to appear before the party’s National Disciplinary Committee and demanded that the proceedings be broadcast live.

This follows confirmation by the NPP that the party’s General Secretary, Kodua, has formally petitioned the Committee over what he described as a series of alleged misconduct by Mr Baffoe, which includes public insults and unsubstantiated allegations deemed damaging to the party’s unity and reputation.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, September 30, Abronye acknowledged receipt of the party’s communiqué and said he was fully prepared to honour the summons.

He, however, went further to accuse Kennedy Agyapong, a senior figure within the NPP, of actions he claimed have been detrimental to the cohesion of the party.

“I hereby write to indicate my full preparedness and willingness to appear before the Committee to comprehensively lay bare and substantiate the antichrist actions and inaction of Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, which have undermined the cohesion and integrity of our party,” Abronye stated.

Mr Abronye is calling for the entire disciplinary process to be conducted in the public eye.

“Since the referral was made public, I therefore propose that the sittings of the committee be conducted openly and broadcast live, so that the rank and file of our noble party may have the opportunity to witness, at first hand, the manifest antichrist posture and conduct of Hon. Kennedy Agyapong,” the statement continued.

Health Workers Reject Postings To Elubo Hospital

0

It has emerged that most of the health workers, particularly nurses who are posted to the Elubo Government Hospital in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region, refuse to accept the postings.

Zachariah Musah, the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, who disclosed this, expressed worry about the situation.

He said the challenge, coupled with inadequate accommodation for health personnel, is hindering the hospital’s ability to provide essential care to the people of Elubo and its environs.

The 65-bed facility with state-of-the-art equipment which was opened in 2023, is currently grappling with severe shortage of staff.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that even though the health facility has the capacity to absorb 120 health workers, only 45 are currently available.

Interacting with the Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, the Medical Superintendent stated, “We have two key obstacles – the reluctance of some nurses to accept postings to the facility and lack of accommodation for staff.”

He said, “We recently opened the theatre, and most of the functional units have machines that are state-of-the-art, but they remain closed because we do not have trained personnel to use them.”

For his part, the Regional Minister, Mr. Nelson, could not fathom why nurses posted to the facility decline the postings.

“It beats my mind why when some nurses and health workers are transferred or posted to a facility, they can simply refuse and still remain on the payroll,” he stated.

He pointed out that while some health facilities are overstaffed, others are facing shortages.

He pledged his commitment to finding solutions to the hospital’s two key challenges, but called on those responsible for managing the situation to take action.

“As the government seeks long-term solutions to the staffing crisis, it is essential to transform this multi-million-cedi investment into a fully operational healthcare hub,” he added.

He appealed to the health workers to focus more on patients’ care, and proposed for the establishment of an office dedicated to safeguarding patient interests.

The Parties Without Representation in Parliament (PWREP) is demanding the Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine to immediately withdraw the ongoing prosecution of former National Signals Bureau (NSB) Director-General, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, describing the case as “legally shaky, strategically reckless, and a waste of judicial resources.”

‘You kept paying a dead person for 26 months? – PAC questions TTH management

The Tamale Teaching Hospital The Tamale Teaching Hospital

During the sitting of the Public Accounts Committee on Monday, September 29, 2025, it was discovered that the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) had been paying a deceased staff member for the past 26 months.

This revelation follows the recent Auditor-General’s report, which uncovered the payment of unearned salaries totalling GH¢1,449,000.

Members of the Committee expressed outrage upon learning that the hospital had validated the salary of the deceased employee over that period.

Appearing before the Committee, the hospital’s Director of Administration, Dr Emmanuel Sena Kwasi Donkor, admitted that only GH¢303,558.68—representing approximately 21 percent of the total amount—had been recovered so far.

“We were able to recover some amounts. Before we got here, we had received letters from some banks stating that they had stopped transferring the funds to the government chest,” Dr Donkor told the Committee.

He appealed for parliamentary intervention to facilitate the full recovery of the funds.

“Maybe at the end of this session we will make a prayer to this House for the House to make an order directing those banks to transfer [the money],” he said.

Dr Donkor further disclosed that the hospital had submitted the names of implicated individuals to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for investigation and recovery.

“EOCO has written back requesting the files of the people involved, and we have submitted them,” he added.

Despite these assurances, PAC members expressed dissatisfaction with the hospital’s explanation.

Ranking Member on the Committee, Samuel Atta-Mills, questioned the hospital’s validation process, citing the case of a deceased employee whose salary continued to be paid long after his death.

“Habib Napare – date of separation was 2022. This guy had died. Didn’t you go to the funeral? And you validated this dead person for 26 months? And now you are coming to tell Parliament to do what?” Atta-Mills fumed.

The Committee has since demanded greater accountability from the hospital, warning that weak validation systems contribute to financial leakages that undermine the public purse.

Abena Osei-Asare is the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament Abena Osei-Asare is the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament

The Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, Abena Osei-Asare, could not hold back her disappointment over the failure of the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku; and the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine; or their deputies, to appear before the committee.

During the committee’s public hearing on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, Osei-Asare asserted that the two ministers should know that either they or their deputies must be present when Parliament calls them to answer questions about infractions in the books of their ministries that had been captured in the Auditor-General’s Report.

“Ministry of Agriculture, is this the first time you are attending upon the Public Accounts Committee?… So, then, why do you not know what is expected of you and then you do something else? Because you always come with the political head and then the principal spending officer, which is your chief director. And so if the minister or deputy is not in…

“Respectfully, we are all serving our nation in different capacities. Let’s attach seriousness to what we do. We called your minister. Your minister is not here. It’s the same with the AG and Minister for Justice… They also failed to attend upon the Public Accounts Committee,” she fumed.

PAC grills government statistician over alleged lunch, per diem irregularities

Osei-Asare, who is the Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, went on to say that the failure of the ministers to appear before the committee when they are scheduled affects its work.

She sent a caution to the ministers who failed to appear before the committee to ensure that either they themselves or their deputies are present on the rescheduled dates.

“We are all discharging our mandates in different capacities. Let’s respect each other’s mandates and do what is expected of us. We will have to reschedule you. When you do this, you throw our programme off board. And so we don’t expect this to happen again.

“So, tell the Minister of Agriculture that we expect to see him or his deputy heading the delegation. And it’s the same with the Attorney General and Minister of Justice. He should come or his deputy should come. That is how we address queries… that is what the protocol is when Parliament calls you on the Auditor-General’s Report. It is what is done every time. And I don’t expect that under this government they want to do anything different,” she reiterated.

Gun licensing in Ghana still manual, renewal system ‘daunting’ – Interior Minister

0

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has revealed that Ghana’s gun registration process remains fully manual, posing significant challenges for both applicants and law enforcement.

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, the Minister explained that acquiring a firearm license involves several cumbersome steps, including writing directly to the Interior Minister, background checks by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) or the Police CID, fingerprinting, and fee payments.

He noted that while the registration process is to control the number of guns in the country, the manual system also complicates renewals since firearm licenses are issued per calendar year.

“One of the challenges that we have is that everything is manual. For example, if you want to possess a firearm, you have to write to the Minister for the Interior, who then forwards it to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) or the police CID. They will then do a background check and advise the minister.

“After you go to the police CID, they will take your fingerprint, and then you pay the necessary fees, and then they grant you the license.

“You may take your license in November, and by December, it has expired. The law is such that the one-year mandate is within a particular year, that is, from January 1 to December 30. But because all these are manual, it becomes a daunting task,” he added.

He added that talks are underway to ensure that the process is moved onto a digital platform to make the gun registration process easier.

The Interior Minister disclosed that discussions are ongoing to transition the firearm licensing process to a digital platform to streamline operations and reduce loopholes.

Earlier, Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno explained that while licenses are valid for one year, many gun owners fail to renew them on time, leaving the police unaware until incidents occur.

His responses came after the Chairperson of the PAC, Abena Osei Asare, raised questions about the registration process during the hearing, prompting the minister’s remarks.

“To register a gun means that you must acquire the license to possess a firearm as an individual through our firearm commission, just like you have a driver’s license. When you are given the licence, you possess the gun for a year.

“After that, you have to go back and renew that license. But the problem we have is that people actually go straight to renew the licenses. It isn’t until something happens that the police get to know that such a license holder has not renewed,” he said.

In a sermon delivered to his congregation on September 28, Adom Kyei Duah complained about the constant bashing he received from gospel musician Diana Asamoah and other NPP communicators.

Diana Asamoah, who is closely affiliated with the NPP, has accused the popular man of God of being a charlatan and playing a role in her sister’s death.

She claimed that his teachings led her sister to ignore her conventional medicine when she had diabetes and relied on his ‘magical’ sobolo, which proved fatal.

Below is a Twitter video of Diana Asamoah discussing her feud with Adom Kyei Duah.

In a video seen by YEN.com.gh, the founder and leader of the Believer’s Worship Centre, also known as the Philadelphia Movement, called on the NPP to bring their communicators and the gospel singer to order.

“Look at this evangelist who is representing the NPP and who constantly attacks me. So if she’s representing the NPP and doing that, what Philadelphia member do you think would vote for the party?” he said.

Adom Kyei Duah added that if the attacks continue, he would not help the party to win the next general elections in 2028, leading to their loss.

“What haven’t your communicators said about me? To date, they continue to attack me. So when it’s time for the next election, you’d better go ask for permission from your evangelist before you come and ask for my prayers,” he added.

Madagascar police fire tear gas as president fails to placate protesters

0

Police in Madagascar have fired tear gas as hundreds of young protesters returned to the streets of the capital, despite the president agreeing to dissolve his government.

The so-called Gen-Z protests have seen thousands demonstrate in cities across Madagascar since Thursday, demanding an end to repeated water and power cuts.

President Andry Rajoelina sacked his government on Monday, but protesters responded to calls on social media for a fresh rally on Tuesday.

A message on the protest movement’s Facebook page expressed disappointment with the president’s speech, calling for him to apologise and take responsibility after protesters were killed by the security forces.

The UN’s human rights chief previously said security forces had used “unnecessary force” to quell the unrest, adding that at least 22 people were killed and 100 others injured.

Madagascar’s foreign ministry has rejected the UN’s figures, alleging the data is “based on rumours or misinformation”.

Police were deployed in and around Antananarivo on Tuesday. At one roadblock, they fired teargas to scatter a small crowd that had begun to gather, the AFP news agency reported.

Protests first started in Antananarivo, but have since spread to eight cities across the country.

A dusk-to-dawn curfew was imposed in Antananarivo after reports of violence and looting, with police firing rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowds.

UNCHR head Volker Türk said he was “shocked” by the security forces’ violent crackdown that he said also saw arrests, beatings and live bullets used against demonstrators.

“I urge the security forces to desist from the use of unnecessary and disproportionate force and to immediately release all arbitrarily detained protesters,” Türk said in a statement on Monday.

According to the UN, the dead “include protesters and bystanders killed by members of the security forces, but also others killed in subsequent widespread violence and looting by individuals and gangs not associated with the protesters”.

Last week, Madagascar’s president announced that he had sacked the energy minister for failing to do his job properly, but protesters demanded that the president and the rest of his government step down too.

Thousands took to the streets once again on Monday.

“I understand the anger, the sadness, and the difficulties caused by power cuts and water supply problems,” Rajoelina said during his address on state broadcaster Televiziona Malagasy.

He said he had “terminated the functions of the prime minister and the government” and applications for a new premier would be received over the next three days before a new government is formed.

However, those currently in office would act as interim ministers pending the formation of a new government, he noted.

Rajoelina added that he wanted to hold talks with young people.

A banner at one of last week’s demonstrations in Antananarivo read: “We don’t want trouble, we just want our rights”.

But some reports last week suggested protesters had damaged – possibly by setting fire to – the homes of at least two legislators. The “Gen Z” movement alleges, however, that paid goons had looted various buildings in order to undermine their cause.

Madagascar has been rocked by multiple uprisings since it gained independence in 1960, including mass protests in 2009 that forced former president Marc Ravalomanana to step down and saw Rajoelina come to power.

The protests mark the most significant challenge the president has faced since his third re-election in 2023.

Women push boundaries in Ghana’s heavy machinery sector

Business News

Ghana’s male-dominated heavy machinery industry is witnessing a shift as six women have successfully completed a 10-week Mobile Crane and Forklift Training Programme, signalling new opportunities for gender inclusion in technical and vocational education and training (TVET).

The women, trained under the joint initiative of the National Association for Heavy-Duty Equipment Operators Ghana (NAHEOG) and the Regional Maritime University (RMU), were part of a 50-member class drawn from West and Central Africa.

Their graduation has been hailed by industry leaders as evidence that more women are breaking barriers in non-traditional career paths.

The NAHEOG President, Mr Dominic Kofi Eyiah, described their achievement as transformative. “They are not only trained professionals now, but also role models who will inspire other young women to consider careers in technical and industrial fields,” he said.

He stressed that operators of heavy-duty machinery play a critical role in shaping Ghana’s economy, adding: “You are the silent builders of progress—driving the machines that shape our cities, connect our communities, and power our economy.”

The development comes at a time when Ghana and other African countries are placing greater emphasis on TVET as a driver of economic growth. At the ceremony, Dr Issahaque Munawaru, representing Deputy Minister of Education, Clement Apaak, urged stakeholders to expand technical training opportunities for women, describing TVET as “crucial to Africa’s economic transformation.”

The Acting Vice Chancellor of RMU also appealed for increased government investment in modern equipment to make such training more accessible and affordable. He argued that equipping more young women with technical skills would not only help address labour shortages but also contribute to equity in the workplace.

Beyond training, NAHEOG is pushing reforms to strengthen regulation and efficiency in the industry. Mr Eyiah announced plans for an Operator Biometric Authorisation System (OBAS), which would link heavy equipment operation to the biometric ID of certified professionals.

He also highlighted the association’s recent advocacy successes, including stopping a proposed 50 per cent rise in charges at ports and securing temporary exemptions for crane operators under L.I. 2404.

It costs up to $300,000 to launch a new artiste

Don Jazzy is a Nigerian music mogul Don Jazzy is a Nigerian music mogul

Nigerian music mogul, Don Jazzy, has said that making a new artiste famous isn’t just about talent; it takes a huge amount of money, sometimes running into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Speaking on the Echo podcast, the founder of Mavin Records said it currently takes anywhere between $100,000 and $300,000 to “activate” a new act under his label.

According to him, this figure only covers the first step of an artiste’s career.

‘I spend more than 100 million a year if I sign a new artiste’ – Don Jazzy reveals

“To activate and launch a new Mavin talent? At the moment, about a minimum $100,000 or then to $100 to $300,000 in that bracket,” he explained.

Don Jazzy broke down why such a huge budget is necessary, noting that success in the industry is a mix of creativity, marketing, and connection with fans.

“It’s never just one thing. You can have a great song, but if it’s not marketed properly, it won’t work. At the same time, you can spend a lot of money, but if people don’t connect with it, they don’t connect,” he said.

He further stated that Mavin Records has built structures over the years to increase the chances of success for its signees.

‘Leaving Mavin Records was premature’ – Reekado Banks

He added that these include marketing and PR departments, research units, production teams, and other support systems that help an artiste compete locally and internationally.

Don Jazzy stressed that no amount of money or structure can replace an artiste’s hunger for success.

“If you want it more than the artiste, it doesn’t really work,” he said, adding that true greatness requires not just passion but also study and preparation.

“Some people have the vision, but the great ones also do the research. If you say you want to be like Michael Jackson, you have to study why Michael Jackson became Michael Jackson,” he stated.

Mavin Records is home to musicians like Rema and Ayra Starr.

5 major items targeted by Trump’s new tariffs starting October 1

0

US President, Donald Trump US President, Donald Trump

The Trump administration is set to implement a new wave of tariffs targeting five key foreign imports, effective October 1, 2025.

President Donald Trump, upon assuming office in January 2025, had already imposed initial tariffs on select imports.

These new levies are part of his continued “America First” policy, aimed at reshoring manufacturing and protecting U.S. industries.

While most of the targeted goods are not directly exported by Ghana, the ripple effects could impact Ghanaian exporters, investors, and trade policy more significantly than expected.

Here’s a breakdown of five major tariffed items and what they could mean for Ghana:

1. Branded Pharmaceuticals – 100% tariff

All non-US-produced branded medicines will now face a 100% import tax. Ghana imports many essential medicines from US and global pharmaceutical suppliers. Rising US drug prices may affect global pricing and supply chains, including regional re-exports.

This directive could limit Ghana’s access to affordable US-produced generics and increase reliance on European and Asian suppliers.

2. Heavy-Duty Trucks – 25% tariff

Foreign-made heavy trucks will now be subject to a 25% tariff. This could raise domestic truck prices in the US and affect the resale market, including second-hand vehicle exports to Africa. Ghana’s construction and logistics sectors, which often depend on imported US trucks, may face higher costs in the medium term.

Donald Trump places 25% tariff on furniture and cabinets

3. Kitchen Cabinets & Bathroom Vanities – up to 50% tariff

Imported wooden cabinetry and vanities will face tariffs of up to 50%. Ghana’s wood furniture and cabinetry export sector, particularly small-scale manufacturers targeting the US market, may struggle to compete or gain entry. This could erode any future cost advantage for Ghanaian furniture exports if tariffs are extended to African suppliers.

4. Upholstered Furniture – 25% to 50% tariffs

High tariffs will be imposed on sofas, chairs, and other upholstered items starting October 1, 2025. Ghana’s emerging home décor and handicraft industry may suffer if future expansions into US markets are met with similar duties. These measures could also disrupt raw material flows, such as foam, textiles, and leather, which are commonly sourced globally for upholstery.

5. Lumber & Wood Products – 10% tariff

A new 10% tariff on lumber imports will affect wood and wood-based items. Ghana’s timber exports to the U.S. could face competitive disadvantages.

Although Ghana is not directly targeted by these tariffs, the broader impact is likely to be felt. Ghanaian exporters may bear the brunt, especially amid ongoing uncertainties surrounding the future of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

Kwesi Botchwey Jr. alleges personal feud driving Adu-Boahene’s prosecution

0

Private legal practitioner and aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kwesi Botchwey Junior, has asserted that the prosecution of former National Signals Bureau Director General, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, lacks supporting evidence.

He contends that the state’s allegations against Adu-Boahene are unsubstantiated and essentially a “chase after a ghost.” Mr. Botchwey Junior claims the trial is fundamentally motivated by personal grievances held by certain individuals against Adu-Boahene.

2028 election will depend on gov’t performance, not candidate—NDC’s Berekum West MP

0

Berekum West MP, Dickson Kyere Duah, says the 2028 elections will be decided by the government’s performance rather than individual candidates.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on September 30, Mr. Duah said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) believes that governance results will be the biggest determinant of victory in 2028.

“For us in the NDC, 2028 election is not going to depend on individual candidates. It is going to depend mostly on the performance of the government,” he stated.

His remarks come on the back of a new poll by Global Info Analytics, which placed Tamale South MP, Haruna Iddrisu, as the leading contender to head the NDC in the next general elections.

The Berekum West MP maintained that if the current government could deliver on key issues, the NDC’s candidate would stand a strong chance of winning.

“If this government performs too well, we are able to deal with the galamsey menace, we are able to turn the economy round, we create jobs for the youth, whoever we elect in 2028 will be able to win. If we are not able to deal with these challenges, no matter who we elect, we will have challenges,” he cautioned.

Mr. Duah added that the NDC is not short of credible individuals capable of succeeding President John Mahama.

“We have a huge number of people, in fact more than 200. We can line them up, and each and every one is capable of succeeding President Mahama. The names that are coming up are people who have served this country with humility, integrity, and commitment over the years, and I am not surprised they are coming up.”

He explained that the party’s immediate priority is to deliver on governance before considering who will lead the NDC into the next elections.

“So for us our focus now is get the job done. In 2027, whoever we elect, if the economy is in shape, galamsey has been dealt with, and our youth employment has come down drastically, our candidate will win hands down.”

According to him, government performance will outweigh the appeal of any single personality.

“Even if we elect an angel and the government has not performed, it will be very difficult. For me, government performance will weigh more than 60 percent against personality. The two go hand in hand, but if we don’t perform, whoever we elect will struggle. If we perform, it becomes easier.”

No MP has apologised for backing Bawumia – Eastern Region NPP MPs fire Bryan Acheampong

0

The 15 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Eastern Region who have declared their support for the former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia have challenged Dr. Bryan Acheampong to provide evidence for his claim that some of them have privately apologised for endorsing Dr. Bawumia.

According to the MPs, the assertion is not only false but a deliberate attempt to tarnish their image and cast doubt on their public endorsement of the Vice President.

In an interview with Citi News on Tuesday, September 30, MP for Achiasi, Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo, stated that the group deserves a public apology from Dr. Acheampong, a presidential hopeful and MP for Abetifi, if he is unable to substantiate his claims.

“None of the 15 NPP MPs has called to plead with him. We’re asking him to provide evidence to show the whole world those who went to him to plead for forgiveness,” he demanded.

The MPs also dismissed separate claims by Dr. Acheampong that he had warned Dr. Bawumia to be cautious about such endorsements, suggesting they may not be genuine.

“We’re also asking him to give us some evidence. From the investigations we did, there were no such text messages to the former Vice President,” he said.

The U.S. Embassy in Ghana’s EducationUSA network connected nearly 4,000 Ghanaian students to U.S. higher education institutions at the annual College Fair held on September 27, 2025, in Accra.

The fair, held at the Labadi Beach Hotel, featured over 30 universities and colleges from across the United States who provided Ghanaian students, parents, and educators with insights into undergraduate and graduate degree programs, scholarship opportunities, and the application process

Speaking at the event, Rolf Olson, Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, emphasised the importance of educational ties between the United States and Ghana: “I am deeply proud of this connection and look forward to seeing these numbers grow, further strengthening the bonds between Ghana and the United States.”

In addition to connecting students with U.S. institutions, the EducationUSA College Fair provided a platform for U.S. higher education institution representatives to explore potential academic partnerships with Ghanaian institutions. These collaborations aim to strengthen educational ties, foster innovation, and create new opportunities for both countries.

In his remarks, the Deputy Director in charge of Tertiary Education at Ghana’s Ministry of Education, Fred Asa Kisiedu, underscored the value of the EducationUSA College Fair, urging students to “return with skills and knowledge that will contribute to the development of Ghana and Africa as a whole.”

EducationUSA provides free guidance to individuals applying to U.S. colleges and universities and is the only U.S. government source of information on Study in the United States.

The U.S. Embassy currently has two EducationUSA Advising Centres in Ghana, located in Accra-Osu and at ACE Consult in Asokwa-Kumasi. EducationUSA Advisors work with students individually and in groups, in-person and virtually, to enhance their understanding of the college or university application process to be successful applicants.

Retro gaming comebacks: Why old titles still sell

0

New releases often dominate gaming headlines. Budgets soar, graphics improve, and marketing campaigns run worldwide. Yet players still buy games from 20 or even 30 years ago. Sales are strong enough to make retro gaming one of the most profitable corners of the entertainment business. The question is simple: why do these old titles continue to sell? The answer is not one reason but many, from technology to psychology.

Nostalgia that turns into business

Memories drive spending. For people who grew up in the 80s, 90s, or early 2000s, old titles feel like a return home. Booting up a game once played after school creates an instant connection. Publishers see the value in this and bring classics back through compilations, digital stores, or mini-consoles.

Mobile access plays its role as well. Platforms like 1xBet highlight how convenience encourages users to stay engaged. The same principle applies to retro titles: easy access equals steady demand.

Digital stores and subscriptions

Owning bulky consoles or rare cartridges is no longer necessary. With modern stores, one click is enough. Subscription services add another layer, bundling hundreds of old games in a single monthly fee.

Handheld devices expand the reach further. A player can enjoy a platformer from the 90s while traveling to work. Accessibility has transformed retro gaming from a collector’s hobby into a mainstream form of entertainment.

Modernized remakes with familiar roots

Remakes and remasters are not side projects anymore. They are centerpieces in publisher strategies. A single remake of a horror classic in 2023 sold over 5 million copies within six months. That is more than most new titles manage.

Influence of streaming and social platforms

Old titles get fresh life on Twitch and YouTube. A streamer playing a 90s action game can attract thousands of viewers, many of whom never tried the original. Curiosity drives sales.

Retro clips often spread across TikTok or Instagram. Nostalgic sounds and pixel graphics pull attention, proving that retro is not only about playing but also about watching.

Mobile expansion

Smartphones bring classic titles to millions of hands. Emulators, ports, and licensed re-releases make the process seamless. Players can relive favorites without additional devices.

The same logic applies to quick-entry platforms. Services like 1xbet show how mobile-first access ensures continuous engagement. Retro titles use identical strategies, blending old charm with modern convenience.

Why players stick to old titles

There are clear reasons why players choose retro over modern games:

  1. Simpler mechanics make gameplay straightforward.
  2. Focus is on fun, not overwhelming storylines.
  3. Pixel art and early 3D still hold a unique charm.
  4. Emotional connection builds loyalty across decades.

This mix makes retro more than nostalgia. It provides features often missing in new releases.

Regional preferences

Preferences differ. Some regions love role-playing classics, others prefer arcade shooters or sports simulations. Subscription services adapt to these differences, tailoring game libraries for maximum appeal. This localization keeps the market flexible and profitable worldwide.

Psychologists often highlight how humans return to what feels familiar. Games from youth provide stability, especially during uncertain times. Playing something known reduces stress. That sense of safety adds to the willingness to spend.

Lower costs, higher returns

Making a new blockbuster can cost hundreds of millions. Re-releasing a retro game often costs a fraction of that. For investors, the balance of low risk and high return is too attractive to ignore. This financial reality ensures publishers will continue funding retro projects.

Collectors and limited editions

Collectors also fuel demand. Limited-edition cartridges, discs, and boxed sets sell quickly. Many double in price within months, creating a mix of entertainment and investment. Collectors treat retro gaming not only as play but also as a way to own a piece of history.

Structured view of growth

Year Revenue (USD billions) Growth
2021 0.9 12%
2022 1.2 15%
2023 1.4 18%
2024 1.6 14%

The pattern shows stable growth across four years, building confidence among investors and publishers.

Cultural visibility

The connection between culture and commerce ensures retro gaming stays relevant. Retro gaming in 2025 is a business built on memory, convenience, and smart economics. From digital stores to remakes, from mobile platforms to collector’s editions, old titles remain profitable. The combination of nostalgia and practicality keeps demand alive.

Old games are not fading into history. They are thriving products with secure positions in the global gaming market.

Govt approves GHC5 daily feeding for inmates – Prisons DG

0

The Director-General of Prisons Service, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (ESQ), has disclosed that the Mahama government has approved an upward adjustment of GHC5 per inmate daily, though the funds are yet to be released.

She revealed that until recently, prison authorities were managing just GHC1.80 per day to feed each inmate, an amount she described as grossly inadequate.

Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie cautioned that poor feeding remains a major cause of unrest in Ghana’s prisons.

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee on Tuesday, September 30, she said, “Once the feeding is wrong, it has ripple effects on health and every other thing; we are working assiduously to ensure the rules change. We are hopeful the GHC5 a day will be increased in the course of 2026 to reflect the feeding regime for a disgruntled adult, an angry adult behind bars,” she said.

She explained that prison authorities currently rely on their own gardens, a small fish pond, and donations from churches to supplement food supplies.

According to her, inadequate feeding often sparks riots, putting prison officers at serious risk.

“We have to note on this platform that one of the things that is giving cause for inmates to riot is food. And so, we do everything within our means to ensure that as much as possible, we’re containing the inmates without the riots.

“Because if there are any riots, the poor prison officer becomes the first point of attack before any intervention. I want to say that beyond the feeding, there are also challenges,” she stressed.

Beyond the issue of feeding, Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie called for broader reforms to improve prison conditions and emphasised that inmate welfare is essential to national security.

“If we want to have serious public safety in this country, we have to prioritise the needs of prisoners. Because they’re part of us, they will be with us, and we don’t know who will be our next guest,” she stated.

Kwadwo Poku slams IMANI report as ‘frivolous’ and ‘false’

0

The integrity of the previous administration’s Gold-for-Oil (G4O) programme has thrust back into the national spotlight as Energy Analyst Kwadwo Poku condemns a recent report by policy think tank IMANI Africa, dismissing its underlying analysis as “frivolous” and lacking credibility.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show today, September 30, Mr Poku, a former NPP flagbearer aspirant, passionately challenged the public discourse surrounding the controversial G4O programme, accusing the nation of becoming susceptible to sensational but unfounded claims.

“We should move away from a country of mediocrity to a country of seriousness,” Mr Poku asserted, lamenting what he sees as a decline in rigorous public analysis.

“Ghana is becoming a country where somebody wakes up in the morning and writes an article that pigs can fly, and journalists will start calling all the experts to ask them whether it’s true that pigs can fly. That is where we’re heading to”.

IMANI’s ‘International Audit’ Lacks Credibility

The core of Mr Poku’s criticism targeted IMANI’s recent statement, which was reportedly based on a confidential forensic risk assessment of the G4O programme by an unnamed multinational organisation.

Mr Poku, a veteran of the energy sector with decades of experience, claimed to have reviewed the very document IMANI referenced and found it severely lacking in authenticity and factual basis.

“IMANI, I know Franklin; I know Kofi. But if you read the press statement they put out, they said that they have reviewed an international audit. I have seen that audit they are referring to — there is no name to it, there is no organisation to it, and if you read it, it’s frivolous,” he added.

Mr Poku then issued a direct challenge to the think tank to name its source, arguing that the anonymity renders the document impossible to verify.

“I want to say on national television today, IMANI should come and tell us who authored the assessment. It will help us interrogate it better because, if you read it, it impugns companies’ integrity; it impugns the integrity of technical technocrats and civil servants.”

‘Potential Losses’ and Integrity of Top Officials

The energy analyst focused particularly on the integrity of the individuals involved in managing the multi-billion-dollar scheme, pointing out a key figure whose reputation is allegedly jeopardized by the undocumented report.

“Do you know who was the head of Gold for Oil? Today, the person who is the First Deputy Governor of the BoG was head of Gold for Oil at the Bank of Ghana,” Mr Poku stated, cautioning against the casual defamation of senior public servants based on anonymous data.

He also flatly rejected the financial loss figures cited in the anonymous document, arguing they misunderstand basic industry terminology.

The report, according to IMANI, suggested potential losses amounting to GH¢7.2 billion ($576 million, based on current approximate exchange rates).

Mr Poku argued: “You can’t put this frivolous document in the public domain and talk about potential losses. This 7.2 billion that they talk about—it’s not a loss. They talk about potential—what is potential loss? How does one sit and put something in the public domain and every journalist is feeding on it?”

Tax Exemptions: Industry Standard, Not G4O Malpractice

Mr Poku devoted significant detail to debunking the report’s claims regarding tax exemptions, which it reportedly cited as a major source of loss or malpractice within the G4O framework.

He explained that these exemptions are a standard, well-documented practice within the Ghanaian petroleum industry, independent of the Gold-for-Oil policy.

“When somebody issues a document and says that there are 7.5 legal exemptions—which is what happens in the industry — what they talk about, which is the exemptions in the importation of fuel, it was happening before Gold for Oil, was happening during Gold for Oil, and is happening today,” Mr Poku elaborated.

He stressed that the taxes are not waived entirely but are handled through a recovery mechanism involving the government and the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and Bulk Distribution Companies (BDCs).

“Petroleum products are exempted and the taxes are recovered from you and me at the pump. If you go to GRA today, GRA is in court with a lot of BDCs and OMCs to recover taxes. The NPA boss is with OMC to recover margins. It’s the practice in the industry.”

Concluding his strong denial, Mr Poku, who identifies as a member of a civil society, reiterated his extensive experience in the field to lend weight to his technical refutation:

“I have worked in this industry for 24 years of practical experience working. If there are things that are wrong, I am a member of a civil society; we will point it out. What I am saying is that the document IMANI is referring to—the reason why I am discrediting it is that there is no author, there is no institution to it. All the premises upon which it makes the conclusion is false, 100 percent false.”

The analyst’s comments intensify the debate over the effectiveness and transparency of the G4O scheme, demanding a higher standard of evidence in policy analysis and public discourse.

Ghana Tourism Federation President calls for sustainable transformation in tourism

0

President of the Ghana Tourism Federation (GHATOF), Mr Charles Adu-Gyamfi, has called for a bold and united commitment to transform Ghana’s tourism sector sustainably, stressing that the industry must deliver not just beauty and leisure, but jobs, inclusivity, resilience, and preservation of heritage.

He delivered the solidarity message during the 2025 World Tourism Day celebration, which coincided with the vibrant Somètutuza Festival at Agbozume in the Ketu South Municipality. The global day was marked under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.”

Tourism as a Force for Good

Mr Adu-Gyamfi emphasised that tourism is far more than “the movement of people or images of beautiful places.” When managed responsibly, he said, it becomes a powerful driver of social good—transforming communities, strengthening economies, conserving the environment, and promoting cross-cultural understanding.

“Tourism preserves our heritage, boosts local livelihoods, strengthens national identity, and fosters international understanding. But transformation is not automatic—it requires intentional action, wise governance, community participation, and sustainable practices,” he stressed.

Ghana’s Strengths and Challenges

He highlighted Ghana’s many tourism assets, including its UNESCO World Heritage forts and castles, traditional festivals, beaches, forests, wildlife parks, and creative industries. Landmark initiatives such as the Black Star Experience, Beyond the Return, and regional tourism promotions, he said, have already opened new opportunities for local communities.

However, he acknowledged persistent challenges, including environmental degradation, climate change, poor infrastructure, limited air connectivity, skills shortages, particularly among youth, and the difficulty of ensuring that tourism benefits reach rural communities as much as major urban centres.

Six Pillars of Sustainable Transformation

Mr Adu-Gyamfi outlined six core areas that must anchor Ghana’s tourism transformation:

  1. Environmental Stewardship – Safeguarding forests, coasts, wetlands, and heritage sites through strict conservation laws, renewable resource use, waste management, and eco-friendly transport.
  2. Inclusive Economic Opportunities – Expanding decent jobs and entrepreneurship, especially for women, youth, rural communities, artisans, SMEs, and tour guides.
  3. Preserving Culture and Identity – Ensuring Ghana’s diverse cultures, arts, and traditions are protected from over-commercialisation and respected in their authenticity.
  4. Infrastructure and Connectivity – Investing in roads, energy, clean accommodations, digital access, and strong air links to unlock lesser-known tourism regions.
  5. Responsible Investment and Partnerships – Attracting domestic and foreign investment that respects communities and ecosystems, while fostering public-private and traditional authority partnerships.
  6. Resilience and Climate Action – Building risk management plans, disaster preparedness, eco-friendly designs, and climate adaptation into tourism development.

A Call to Action

The GHATOF President urged all stakeholders—government agencies, private sector players, traditional leaders, local communities, civil society, and international partners—to join hands in reshaping Ghana’s tourism story.

“Let us strengthen policies that promote sustainability. Let us invest in training and skills, especially for youth and community-based tourism enterprises. Let us ensure that every tourism project considers environmental impact, cultural sensitivity, and equitable benefits,” he said.

He further called for innovation and digital technology to improve visitor experiences and operational efficiency, while positioning Ghana as a model of sustainable tourism in Africa.

Vision for the Future

Mr Adu-Gyamfi expressed confidence that Ghana can emerge as a global example of how tourism can be both profitable and responsible.

“I believe Ghana can become a model of sustainable tourism in Africa: where visitors come not only for what we have but leave with respect for what we stand for; where our natural and cultural resources are safeguarded; and where all citizens, even in remote villages, feel the benefits of tourism,” he declared.

The solidarity message drew applause from participants at the Somètutuza Festival, who hailed the President’s vision of a tourism industry that is inclusive, environmentally responsible, and resilient against future shocks.

As Ghana joined the world in marking World Tourism Day, his words reinforced the urgency of transforming tourism, not only sustainably, but justly and inclusively, so that present and future generations can share in its promise.

How Dr Sledge purchased Shatta Wale’s ‘Reign’ album for GH¢150,0000

Ghanaian business mogul and music investor Nana Yaw Duodu, popularly known as Dr Sledge, has become the focus of social media discussions following reports of his arrest by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OPS) in connection with ongoing corruption-related investigations.

Following his alleged arrest, a video of the music investor, who also serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Goldridge Refinery Limited, has resurfaced online.

The clip is from Shatta Wale’s “Reign” album concert.

It may be recalled that in 2019, Shatta Wale held one of his highly anticipated concerts in Ghana, where he officially launched the “Reign” album.

In a video captured by GhanaWeb during the event, Dr Sledge, who was present, purchased the first copy of Shatta Wale’s album for GH¢150,000.

During his performance, Shatta Wale announced that he wanted a fan to buy the first copy of the album for GH¢100,000.

“Have you seen these CDs I am holding? How do I make Ghanaians aware that the reason why Shatta Wale can buy houses and cars in Ghana… If you people love me, I want someone to buy one of these CDs for GH¢100,000. I am waiting for the people,” Shatta Wale said.

Minutes after the announcement, Dr Sledge and his wife, Amadia, pledged to purchase the first CD for GH¢150,000 instead of the initial GH¢100,000.

“Yes, I am buying the first CD. I know the CD is going for GH¢100,000, but Shatta Wale deserves more than GH¢100,000, so my wife and I want to give him GH¢150,000,” Dr Sledge stated.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that Dr Sledge was arrested over suspected corruption and related offences linked to the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), particularly in the management of its gold trade program.

According to the reports, the state lost over US$94 million due to Goldridge’s failure to honour its obligations in trade transactions under the Gold-for-Forex and Gold-for-Oil initiatives.

Dr Sledge was reportedly detained after failing to meet bail conditions.

Founder and leader of International God's Way Church, Bishop Daniel Obinim and wife Florence Obinim Founder and leader of International God’s Way Church, Bishop Daniel Obinim and wife Florence Obinim

Founder and leader of the International God’s Way Church, Bishop Daniel Obinim, has finally addressed the growing social media speculation surrounding his marriage to gospel singer Florence Obinim.

In a video shared by GH Page via YouTube on September 30, 2025, Bishop Obinim responded to circulating claims that his wife is unhappy in their 21-year marriage.

He firmly refuted the rumours, stating that Florence is content in their relationship.

“I am not afraid to divorce Florence, and she is equally not afraid to end our marriage, but we respect, love, and cherish each other. Who told you she is not happy in this marriage?” he said.

I was on the verge of going through divorce last year – Bishop Obinim recounts

Bishop Obinim emphasised that his wife has never expressed dissatisfaction in their union and urged the public to stop spreading falsehoods.

He further appealed to critics to allow them space to live peacefully as a couple.

“I swear on my kids and our 21 years of marriage, if you judge me or speak evil about our relationship, your own marriage will end, or your business will collapse. If you’ve been speaking ill of me from 2017 until now, don’t expect anything good to happen in your life.

“You people should leave us alone so we can continue our marriage in peace. If Florence is in the news, talk about her, but don’t drag our marriage into it,” he added.

The powers of the GBA that the Supreme Court might strip

0

The Member of Parliament for South Dayi and the Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has filed a suit at the Supreme Court challenging the exclusive constitutional rights being enjoyed by the Ghana Bar Association (GBA).

Dafeamekpor, in the suit, asked the apex court of the land for seven key declarations, including a request for it to interpret references to the “Ghana Bar Association” in the constitution and the Legal Profession Act as generic or umbrella terms, rather than exclusive to the existing GBA.

The suit, which has divided opinions of legal brains in the country, would have serious ramifications on the powers and privileges of the GBA as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

It basically seeks that the court rule that the mention of the “Ghana Bar Association” in the constitution does not only refer to the GBA but all other law associations in the country.

This article of the provision in the constitution, by interpretation by the Supreme Court, would strip the GBA of virtually all of the privileges as the main umbrella body of lawyers in Ghana.

FULL TEXT: Read details of SC suit by Dafeamekpor, two others challenging GBA’s exclusivity

Articles 153

Article 153 of the 1992 Constitution names the “Ghana Bar Association” as one of the entities in Ghana to have representation on the Judicial Council.

It states that:

“There shall be a Judicial Council which shall comprise the following persons: (a) the Chief Justice who shall be Chairman, (b) the Attorney-General; (c) a Justice of the Supreme Court nominated by the Justices of the Supreme Court; (d) a Justice of the Court of Appeal nominated by the Justices of the Court of Appeal; (e) a Justice of the High Court nominated by the Justices of the High Court; (f) two representatives of the Ghana Bar Association, one of whom shall be a person of not less than twelve years’ standing as a lawyer…”

This means that if the suit succeeds, the GBA would not have the exclusive rights to nominate people to the Judicial Council.

Articles 157

Article 157(1)(c) of the 1992 Constitution also mandates that two members of the Ghana Bar Association be on the Rules of Court Committee.

“1. There shall be a Rules of Court Committee which shall consist of: (a) the Chief Justice, who shall be Chairman; (b) six members of the Judicial Council other than the Chief Justice nominated by the Judicial Council; (c) two lawyers, one of not less than ten and the other of not more than five years’ standing, both of whom shall be nominated by the Ghana Bar Association.

“(2) The Rules of Court Committee shall, by constitutional instrument, make rules and regulations for regulating the practice and procedure of all courts in Ghana,” part of Article 157 reads.

This means that the GBA is also in danger of losing the right to nominate people to the Rules of Court Committee.

Articles 201

The Ghana Bar Association is also required to have representation on the Police Council of Ghana, according to the 1992 Constitution, which the GBA is likely to lose.

Article 201 states that:

“There shall be established a Police Council which shall consist of – (a) a chairman who shall be appointed by the President acting in consultation with the Council of State; (b) the Minister responsible for internal affairs; (c) the Inspector-General of Police; (d) the Attorney-General or his representative; (e) a lawyer nominated by the Ghana Bar Association; (f) a representative of the Retired Senior Police Officers Association; (g) two members of the Police Service, appointed by the President, acting in consultation with the Council of State, one of whom shall be of a junior rank; and (h) two other members appointed by the President.”

The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has disclosed that approximately one million decoders have been deactivated by DStv as part of ongoing efforts to combat cross-border piracy between Ghana and Nigeria.

Since 2017, MultiChoice has been raising alarms about decoder smuggling, which has persisted for nearly a decade, denying the government tax revenues and leaving customers without proper service support.

This issue has, for some time now, led to a series of engagements between the governments and MultiChoice.

Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV, Sam George emphasised the need for the government to address the persistent challenge of unauthorised decoders flooding the Ghanaian market.

“So far, DStv has deactivated close to a million ghost boxes over a period of time,” he said.

He further revealed that this activity has deprived the state of tax revenue and denied unsuspecting customers access to quality customer service, which is gradually impacting Ghana’s local content creation space.

George also commended DStv’s decision to offer Ghana 33% and 50% more value on its packages, firmly dismissing suggestions that the company had introduced similar incentives in the past.

“I have heard people say that DStv has done this before; that is not correct. That is why in the press release I issued, I stated that this is unprecedented in DStv’s own marketing modules,” he added.
