According to GhanaWeb, the Minority Caucus in Parliament has accused the government of evading accountability after previously committing to uncap the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Fund.
According to the Minority, recent statements made by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, which cite financial deficits and resource mismanagement as significant issues facing the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), indicate a retreat from their earlier pledge.
The Minority contends that the current administration, which criticized the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for capping the NHIA Fund, is now failing to deliver on its promise to uncap it.
During a press conference on March 4, 2025, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, the Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, noted that if the NHIA is experiencing a shortfall, clarity is needed regarding the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) revenue, which is expected to reach about 11 billion.
He pointed out that during the NDC’s campaign, they vowed to uncap the NHIL, as outlined in their manifesto.
Dr. Afriye explained that the previous government had generated 8 billion but allocated only 6.4 billion to the NHIA, using a portion of the Health Fund for its budget.
He argued that the NDC campaigned against this practice, claiming it was detrimental, while promising to ensure all revenues would be available to the NHIA.
He expressed concern that the government, now in power, is realizing the difficulty of implementing their promise to uncap the NHIA Fund and is looking for excuses to backtrack.
He urged the government and the Finance Minister to acknowledge their failure to meet their commitments and to apologize to the public.
“I want the Finance Minister to accept and admit, and to apologize to the people of this country that the promise they made to uncap cannot be fulfilled. In this budget, we expect nothing less than a full allocation of what was received in the Health Fund to the NHIA,” Dr. Ayew said.
Additionally, he dismissed allegations of mismanagement from the previous administration, emphasizing that NHIA budget approvals have always involved bipartisan cooperation in Parliament, including Dr. Forson’s participation as a former Minority Leader.
Dr. Afriye pointed out that NHIA budget allocations are statutory and approved in Parliament, unlike other agencies controlled by the Ministry of Finance.
He questioned why concerns over misuse are being raised only now, after Dr. Forson has taken office, suggesting that this reflects a realization of the difficulties in fulfilling campaign promises.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the former Suame Member of Parliament shared that ahead of a crucial meeting, some MPs and ministers had hinted that his removal was imminent.
He recounted how about 80 MPs and several ministers urged him to resist the move, pledging their unwavering support.
Despite this, he decided to step down for the sake of unity within the party and the parliamentary front.
“We had all gathered in a room waiting for the president to begin the meeting. About 80 out of the 137 MPs signed a petition asking me not to step down because they would support me. Likewise, some ministers encouraged me to hold on as Majority Leader,” he explained.
However, during the meeting, former President Akufo-Addo informed him that the decision was not solely his but had been made in consultation with party leadership.
The General Secretary also spoke, and when asked if he had anything to say, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu announced his resignation.
“The MPs who supported me were disappointed, but I didn’t want to be the cause of any implosion within the party,” he added. “I didn’t want to be the eye of any storm, so I just resigned.”
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu officially resigned on February 21, 2024, following discussions with NPP leadership at the Jubilee House.
He was succeeded by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Member of Parliament for Effutu.

The Chief Executive of the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA), Alexander Kofi-Mensah Mould has reassured that the outcomes of the National Economic Dialogue (NED), will not be shelved as speculated by a section of concerned Ghanaians.
“MiDA is committed to ensuring that resolutions from the dialogue translate into tangible, game-changing projects including other transformational projects in the NDC‘s manifesto” Alex Mould emphasized.
The MiDA Boss, who was speaking to the media on the sidelines of the dialogue, affirmed that the Authority, which has been tasked as government’s Project Implementation Unit (PIU), is fully prepared to drive cross-ministry, cross-sectoral projects.
Hence, he reiterated that the dialogue would not become yet another talk shop but a springboard for real economic transformation.
The National Economic Dialogue has six thematic areas of critical importance to Ghana‘s economic transformation. Each thematic area has assigned subject matter experts from diverse fields, who will lead break-out sessions to brainstorm and discuss practical and actionable solutions
in their respective areas.
The MiDA boss shared that his organization is poised to put into action the focus groups’ recommendations, if subsumed by government, as part of its development agenda.
Alex Mould further indicated that this commitment to actuate government’s manifesto policies into game-changing and transformational projects will be done in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance.
“MiDA is the project implementation unit of the country. It is going to handle the key transformational, game-changing projects that are in our manifesto and those that shall come out of these implementation thematics. We will be working closely with the Minister for Finance on funding to implement all of these.
“We are eager to work with the various ministries, development institutions, and development banks to implement these transformational game-changing projects, he told the media.
This assurance from MiDA signifies a strong commitment from the government to move beyond policy discussions towards execution.

Article 115 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana guarantees freedom of speech, debate, and proceedings in Parliament, ensuring that such discussions cannot be impeached or questioned in any court outside of Parliament,” he stated.
The Speaker also announced that formal investigations would be launched to identify the MP responsible.
“Article 116 of the 1992 Constitution provides that while Members of Parliament enjoy immunity from civil or criminal proceedings for statements made in Parliament, they remain accountable within Parliament through the Parliamentary Committee on Privileges when those statements are found to be prima facie defamatory, in contempt of Parliament, or in breach of parliamentary privilege.
“Such a member, if found guilty, could face reprimand or, by resolution, suspension from the service of Parliament for a period not exceeding nine months or even expulsion from Parliament altogether. Let me be clear, Parliament is a place for constructive debate guided by the principles of mutual respect and integrity,” he added.

A former presidential aspirant of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Prof Agyeman Badu Akosa, has called on Nkrumaists and CPP members to consider joining the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to him, it is currently the only major political party closest to the Nkrumaist tradition.
Speaking in an interview with Talking Africa, Prof. Akosa lamented the lack of impact by Nkrumaists in Ghanaian politics.
“This is where we are in national politics. I know that a lot of my contemporaries believe that we can come together. How long? I contested in 2007. 2007 to 2025 is 18 years. We’ve not made any jot on the political scene. So for how long? We continue till 25 years, 50 years?”
To justify his stance, he went on: “I am saying, look, fortunately or unfortunately, Rawlings who, I believe, created the divide, having overthrown Limann’s government and being the maker of the National Democratic Congress(NDC) is no more. Hilla Limann is no more. All the icons of the Nkrumaist [tradition] are no more.
The NDC today is the closest to an Nkrumaist tradition. Why don’t we support it to succeed?”
To further buttress his point, Prof Akosa talked about the last eight years of the previous NPP government.

The next day, he returned to the drinking spot, intending to buy another cigarette and settle his outstanding debt. He handed GH₵5 to Affumwaa, assuming the debt would be deducted.
However, when he later attempted to make another purchase, Affumwaa confronted him, demanding the 20 pesewas, which led to a heated argument.
Osman narrated that the argument quickly escalated into a physical altercation. He alleged that Affumwaa struck him on the head with a stick, causing him to fall to the ground.
“She, with the help of her children, pounced on me, beating me mercilessly before biting my testicles,” Osman recounted.
He said he began bleeding profusely and screamed for help until bystanders rushed him to the hospital.
The Assin Fosu District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jacob Kumedzro, confirmed the incident, stating that investigations were ongoing.
Meanwhile, Osman has since been discharged from the hospital.

Parliament has suspended proceedings for 40 minutes after the Majority and Minority sides failed to reach an agreement on the allocation of time and the ratio for debating the President’s State of the Nation Address (SONA).
Following President John Dramani Mahama’s presentation of the State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Thursday, February 27, 2024, the House commenced debate on the address on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.
However, shortly after the debate began, the Minority side raised objections over the Speaker’s selection of members to contribute.
According to Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin, the selection by First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor, which appeared to be based on the numerical strength of the caucuses, was unfair and inconsistent with parliamentary practices.
On the other hand, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga argued that equal representation in the debate would be discriminatory and inequitable, given the difference in numbers between the two sides.
After several minutes of disagreement, the Second Deputy Speaker announced a 40-minute suspension to allow the leaders of both sides to engage in discussions and resolve the matter.

The National Concerned Association of Small-Scale Miners, Ghana (NCSSMAG), has thrown its weight behind the establishment of a government-backed Gold Board to regulate the purchase of gold from small-scale miners.
According to the association, this initiative will ensure fair pricing, eliminate exploitation by foreign buyers, and enhance the economic viability of the small-scale mining sector.
In a press statement signed by NCSSMAG President Michael Kwadwo Peprah, the association reaffirmed its commitment to policies that promote transparency and sustainability in the sector.
The statement follows last year’s engagement with then-National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, former President John Dramani Mahama, during which discussions centered on incorporating small-scale mining reforms into the NDC manifesto.
During the meeting, the former president assured the miners that, if given the opportunity, his administration would implement policies to support small-scale miners, including the establishment of a Gold Board to provide fair and stable gold pricing.
NCSSMAG welcomed the newly proposed Gold Board, introduced by Sammy Gyamfi, the Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), describing it as a significant step towards eliminating unfair trading practices that have long disadvantaged local miners.
The association emphasized that the idea of a structured gold purchasing framework was first discussed during a stakeholder meeting on June 11, 2024.
The meeting, attended by representatives from the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), examined the challenges faced by small-scale miners in selling gold at fair prices.
According to NCSSMAG, foreign buyers, particularly Indian traders, have been purchasing gold at rates 10 to 15 percent below market value, leaving miners with little choice but to accept unfavorable deals due to the lack of a regulated buying system.
While the law permits PMMC to buy gold from small-scale miners, the association noted that inadequate government funding has prevented the company from competing effectively in the market.
As a result, miners have been forced to rely on foreign buyers, leading to revenue losses for both miners and the state.
NCSSMAG, therefore, called on the government to allocate adequate resources to the proposed Gold Board to ensure a well-structured, transparent, and competitive gold market.
Beyond fair pricing, the association also urged the government to invest in modern mining equipment to enhance productivity. It emphasised that inadequate machinery remains a significant challenge for small-scale miners, reducing efficiency and limiting growth in the sector.
NCSSMAG reiterated its commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure that small-scale miners operate in a fair and sustainable environment.
The association expressed optimism that the establishment of the Gold Board would not only protect the interests of local miners but also contribute to national economic growth.

The remark came during heated discussions on the 60th anniversary of the death of Joseph Boakye Danquah. Tensions escalated when Tamale Central MP, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, challenged what he described as exaggerated praises from the Minority regarding JB Danquah’s legacy.
The exchange grew intense, prompting the presiding Speaker, Andrew Asiamah, to limit contributions to only parliamentary leadership, effectively silencing other MPs.

News coming in indicates that former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), Gifty Oware Mensah, has arrived at Kotoka International Airport in Accra. She is expected to report to the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) for questioning about the recent NSS ghost names scandal. This has generated a lot of reactions on social media.
The investigation started after officials discovered 81,885 ghost names on the NSS payroll. These were fake names added to the system so that some people could illegally receive allowances meant for real national service personnel. A recent check showed that out of 180,030 names sent for payment in 2024, only 98,145 were real people. This raised serious concerns about corruption in the NSS.
Reports say this fraud started in 2018. Some officials allegedly found a way to add fake names to the payroll without following the right process. Investigators also found that fake student index numbers were created to make the fraud look real. Because of this, a lot of money was stolen from the government.
Gifty Oware Mensah, who was one of the top officials at NSS during this period, has been accused of being involved in the fraud. Reports suggest that during her time in office, a large number of ghost names were added to the payroll. Because of this, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) declared her wanted for questioning. After weeks of rumors about her whereabouts, she has now returned to Ghana and is expected to meet with the National Investigation Bureau (NIB).
President John Dramani Mahama has ordered a full investigation into the NSS under the previous administration. He has also called for urgent changes to stop such fraud from happening again. Many Ghanaians are closely following the case, waiting to see what will happen next and whether those responsible will face punishment.

Kukuom (Ash), March 04, GNA – Mr Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minister of Roads and Highways has ordered the immediate closure of a bridge over the River Offin at Kukuom in the Atwima Mponua District, for rehabilitation.
He gave the directive when he inspected the life-threatening bridge following a widely circulated video on social media about the deplorable state of the bridge.
The Minister, who was accompanied by the Ashanti Regional Minister and some members of the Regional Security Council, tasked engineers under the Ministry to work closely with a contractor to fix the bridge within three months.
The contractor is expected to create a detour in the interim to ensure traffic flow during the period of reconstruction.
“This issue was reported since 2018 and we never had a solution but President Mahama says he was not elected to complain but to deal with things and so he sent me here to assess the situation.
What we are seeing here now is that we need to completely shut down the bridge to allow the engineers to work with the contractor to quickly remedy the situation,” the Minister stated.
The movement of heavy trucks on the bridge due to mining activities in the area instead of using low beds to transport such trucks, according to him, was contributing to the deterioration of the bridge.
He said such practices would have to cease upon the completion of the rehabilitation works.
Mr Agbodza stated that the President was committed to the provision of good roads across the country and thanked the chiefs and people in the area for their cooperation despite the inconveniences the work may cause them.
The Minister and his entourage also inspected the access road to the Agenda 111 Hospital Project at Trede, where he tasked the contractor to upgrade the road to make the facility accessible.
He later proceeded to the site of the Suame Roundabout Interchange Project where he interacted with the contractors on the way forward for the continuation of the project.
He said though source of funding was a bit problematic, but since it was a national asset, the President remained committed to its completion to serve the good people of Kumasi and beyond.
Dr Frank Amoakohene, the Regional Minister also commended the local authorities for their support and cooperation and allowing the projects to go on smoothly.
He said he would collaborate with Ghana Water Company Limited to restore water to residents whose supply may have been affected by the project.

Academic activities have resumed at the Bokankye D/A School in the Atwima Nwabiagya North Municipality of the Ashanti Region under strict security protection, following its closure due to gunfire by land guards over a disputed piece of land near the school.
On Thursday, February 27, 2025, teachers and school authorities at Bokankye Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High School temporarily shut down the school after land guards fired gunshots near the premises.
Reports indicate that a disputed piece of land near the school is at the centre of a conflict between two chiefs, prompting one of them to deploy land guards to assert control.
After a series of engagements between school authorities, traditional leaders, and security personnel in the area, a consensus was reached to resume academic activities on Tuesday, March 4 and ensure students’ right to education is upheld.
Speaking to Citi News, the assistant headteacher of the school, Francis Kakari, and the vice chairman of the Unit Committee, Richard Kwabena Boateng, confirmed the presence of security personnel at the school’s boundaries to ensure students’ safety.
However, they noted that there were no visible security officers within the school compound as personnel opted to remain stationed at vantage points around the school rather than appearing in full regalia and armed, to prevent fear and panic among students.
The assistant headteacher, Francis Kakari, also confirmed low attendance and urged parents to allow their children to return to school, assuring them of their safety.
“From the assurance we had from the district commander, we had no option but to resume school. On resuming today, attendance is very low. So, we had to inform the entire school, to inform the others who are not here, so they all return.
“We have also given information to the information centre so they can inform the others. We are doing all we can to ensure that school is in full session,” he stated.
Gunfire over land dispute shuts down Bokankye D/A school temporarily
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has introduced a special initiative to ease passport processing for Ghanaian Hajj pilgrims, with a fixed fee of GH¢500 for expedited applications.
Announcing the measure at the Hajj Village on Tuesday, March 4, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa stated that a dedicated passport centre has been established to streamline applications for pilgrims. The facility will operate from March 4 to March 13, 2025.

The private sector has urged the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to actively engage businesses in monetary policy deliberations, arguing that a more inclusive approach will foster sustainable economic growth and better align fiscal strategies with business realities.
This recommendation was presented at the National Economic Dialogue during the Private Sector-Led Growth breakout session by Abena Amoah, Managing Director of the Ghana Stock Exchange.
She emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between the central bank and industry players to ensure that monetary policy decisions reflect the economic challenges and opportunities faced by businesses.
According to her, direct engagement with the private sector will help bridge the gap between macroeconomic policies and the realities on the ground, ultimately boosting investment, job creation, and overall economic expansion.
“We believe that the macroeconomy is often diverged from the private sector, so Governor, we want the private sector to meet with the Governor and the MPC frequently—at least twice a year—so you can hear us and see how the tools you have will support growth and employment for Ghana,” she stated.
Her call highlights growing concerns among business leaders that monetary policy decisions, including interest rate adjustments and inflation control measures, often lack input from those directly impacted—private enterprises and investors.

Lawrence Asiamah Hanson, popularly known as Bullgod
Popular artiste manager and entertainment pundit, Bullgod, has explained that his harsh criticisms of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo are personal.
Bullgod pointed out that the former president’s behaviour, both during and after the 2016 and 2020 elections, made it difficult for him to earn his respect.
Speaking in a discussion on Hitz FM, Bullgod, while buttressing his points, recounted how he was picked up by the National Investigations Bureau (formerly BNI) in 2021 over comments he made about the former president.
“I don’t understand why people say I’ve been insulting the former president. Those are not insults; those are opinions.
“For me and him, my issue is personal. His campaign was mostly begging, and he had no real message. For someone like that, it is hard for me to respect him because he does not respect anyone. He doesn’t deserve it, and anyone who says otherwise must see things differently,” he said.
Bullgod also highlighted instances of disrespect from Akufo-Addo towards citizens, particularly towards traditional leaders, which annoyed him.
“In front of everyone, you tell a sitting chief of a community to get up before they can give you the respect you think you deserve is unacceptable. For chiefs to gather and come meet you at your office, the office they put you in.
“For you to go to Akosombo when the flood happened and say, ‘I don’t know why I’m here; you didn’t vote for me,’ I can’t understand how we are supposed to respect such a person,” he stated.
The outspoken entertainment pundit added, “If you treat someone a certain way, the same will happen to you,” he added.
He then expressed disappointment that the former president, who is a learned person would exhibit such behaviour.

The Speaker expressed his displeasure over the conduct of some first-time Members of Parliament.
“Honourable members, some of you are just a few days old in Parliament,” he said.
However, before Speaker Bagbin could finish his statement, someone exclaimed, “It doesn’t matter.”
This remark further infuriated the Speaker, who then challenged the individual to repeat it.
“‘It doesn’t matter.’ I’m looking at you. Repeat what you said,” the Speaker fumed.
He went on to reject claims that he was unfair in his rulings, asserting that he would not have become Speaker of Parliament if he were indeed biased.
“Please. If I were such a biased person, I couldn’t have won to be Speaker while in opposition. Please, I was Bagbin before you came into this House.”

Isaac Adongo, Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) $3 billion bailout program designed to support Ghana’s economic recovery is facing significant challenges, according to Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo.
Speaking on GHOne TV’s State of Affairs with Joshua Kodjo Mensah, Isaac Adongo disclosed that Ghana in 2024 recorded a primary balance deficit of over 4%, a stark contrast to the projected 0.5% surplus under the IMF agreement.
He explained that this shortfall is a major setback in achieving fiscal discipline, which was a key target for the government’s debt sustainability efforts.
“As we speak today, the IMF program is being derailed. We were budgeted to do 0.5% of primary balance, which is an anchor of our fiscal framework, and yet we ended up with 4 point something percent. The reason the finance minister is not comfortable talking about it is because it is not good out there to say that we said we were going to do 0.5%, less than 1%, but we ended up doing a negative of 4%,” Adongo revealed.
“Calculate 4% of GDP. Today, our GDP is calculated in trillions. So, calculate 4% of one trillion—we are talking about 4 billion that we borrowed just to pay interest on debts. That is the picture!” he stressed.
Isaac Adongo’s concerns align with President John Dramani Mahama’s remarks during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27, 2025.
President Mahama confirmed that Ghana has failed to meet several IMF benchmarks, particularly inflation control and currency stability.
“Not even the restraints of an IMF programme were enough for the previous economic managers to exercise prudence in managing our finances. After setting an inflation target of 18% by the end of 2024, the actual rate was 23.8%, significantly exceeding the IMF threshold. The Ghana cedi continued its downward slide, losing 19% of its value against the dollar in 2024. It had already lost 27.8% in value in 2023.”, the President told the nation last Thursday.
President Mahama however, assured Ghanaians that his administration was working to correct these failures and stabilize the economy.
“We are doubling our efforts to complete all outstanding structural reforms. Through the budget, we will implement corrective measures to restore fiscal discipline and debt sustainability. We are also working towards completing the upcoming fourth review of the IMF-supported program.”, he added.
Outlining the key strategies government intends to use to restore Ghana’s economy and regain control of the IMF program, Isaac Adongo emphasized the role of fiscal discipline in achieving an economic turnaround
“One major part of our reset agenda is to fix the fiscal framework. We must put Ghana on a fiscal path that leads to sustainability, while also ensuring that it is inclusive and generates jobs,” Adongo stated.
“We want to have a handle on inflation. It is critical that we develop policies that ensure stability in the cost of living and the value of the cedi,” he added.
Isaac Adongo had also challenged those questioning the President decision to paint a gloomy picture of the country.
“His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has said ‘I will fix it.’ ‘I will fix it’ doesn’t mean that the people should not know from what depth he is going to raise the country out of. He needs to let people know the magnitude of the problem he is resolving,” he argued.
Isaac Adongo finally expressed confidence Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson will do a stllar job that his predecessors.
“Let me tell you, I and Cassiel Ato Forson have been beneficiaries of the backstopping role of many technical experts in our party. I can tell you that for every problem in the NDC, we have a lot of experts that support us. So, Ato is going to have the support of Seth Terkper, he’s going to have the support of Nii Moi, Gatsi, and the Adongos of this world. So, he’s not alone.”
“That is what gives me the confidence that we can’t allow him to fail because if he fails, we all fail. And we believe that His Excellency wants to demonstrate that it’s not about how long you stay in office, but the impact you make within that relatively short period. And Ato Forson will deliver within four years much better than others have done in eight years.”, he concluded
Since securing a $3 billion IMF Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program, Ghana has received $1.92 billion as of December 2024. The most recent disbursement of $360 million came after the successful completion of the third program review on December 2, 2024, with a next review, scheduled for April 2025.
Despite these inflows, Ghana’s economy continues to struggle under high inflation, a depreciating currency, and missed fiscal targets, putting the IMF programme at risk of derailment.
The 2025 Budget Statement, expected to be presented on March 11, 2025 is expected to provide a comprehensive overview of Ghana’s economic performance in 2024 which government officials have been tight lipped on.
It is also expected to outline plans for fiscal discipline, revenue generation and proposed reforms aimed at saving the country’s ailing economy.

Dancehall superstar Stonebwoy has sparked social media discussions after mocking Shatta Wale for living a ‘fake life’ and buying an out-of-style, old-school Rolls Royce.
Stonebwoy, while showing off his diamond and gold jewelry set, bragged about how he has just as much if not more riches than other so-called rich artists.
He trolled those other artists for living fake lives and lying to the public about their level of riches. He also trolled the so-called artist for buying an old, out of style vehicle. Stonebwoy said he will also buy old cars but newer models than Wale’s old Rolls Royce.
Stonebwoy’s bragging and trolling comes after Shatta Wale recently flaunted a new mansion just weeks after bringing a Rolls Royce into Ghana to much fanfare.

A tragic accident occurred on Monday evening at Bediako, Kpone-Katamanso, along the Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line, resulting in the death of a 32-year-old woman, Yahaya Jamila.
Eyewitnesses reported that the victim was attempting to cross the railway tracks with a young boy, believed to be about two years old, when the unfortunate incident occurred.
Some witnesses suggest that the child may have wandered toward the tracks, and in an attempt to rescue him, the woman got trapped.
Others believe that the woman, who was reportedly wearing earphones, may not have heard the approaching train’s horn in time.
The train, which was moving at high speed, struck the woman, crushing her head. The train came to a halt a few meters away before resuming its journey, leaving behind the woman’s mutilated body.
The Community 25 Police have launched an investigation into the incident, as confirmed by Mr. Isaac Newton Tetteh, Assembly Member for the Nmlitsakpo Electoral Area.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the matter, but concerns are being raised about safety measures along the railway line to prevent similar accidents in the future.
The Chief Executive of the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA), Alexander Kofi-Mensah Mould has reassured that the outcomes of the National Economic Dialogue(NED), will not be shelved as speculated by a section of concerned Ghanaians.
“MiDA is committed to ensuring that resolutions from the dialogue translate into tangible, game-changing projects including other transformational projects in the NDC‘s manifesto” Alex Mould emphasized.
The MiDA Boss, who was speaking to the media on the sidelines of the dialogue, affirmed that the Authority, which has been tasked as government’s Project Implementation Unit (PIU), is fully prepared to drive cross-ministry, cross-sectoral projects.
Hence, he reiterated that the dialogue would not become yet another talk shop but a springboard for real economic transformation.
The National Economic Dialogue has six thematic areas of critical importance to Ghana‘s economic transformation. Each thematic area has assigned subject matter experts from diverse fields, who will lead break-out sessions to brainstorm and discuss practical and actionable solutions
in their respective areas.
The MiDA boss shared that his organization is poised to put into action the focus groups’ recommendations, if subsumed by government, as part of its development agenda.
Alex Mould further indicated that this commitment to actuate government’s manifesto policies into game-changing and transformational projects will be done in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance.
“MiDA is the project implementation unit of the country. It is going to handle the key transformational, game-changing projects that are in our manifesto and those that shall come out of these implementation thematics. We will be working closely with the Minister for Finance on funding to implement all of these. We are eager to work with the various ministries, development institutions, and development banks to implement these transformational game-changing projects, he told the media.
This assurance from MiDA signifies a strong commitment from the government to move beyond policy discussions towards execution.
Critics argue that Ghana has seen numerous economic forums that have yielded well-intentioned recommendations that failed to materialize due to bureaucracy, political interference, and financial constraints.
Nonetheless, MiDA’s readiness to spearhead implementation indicates a shift towards action-oriented governance. The Authority’s commitment to execute key projects aligns with government’s broader vision of resetting the economy through strategic investments in infrastructure, energy, and industrial transformation.

An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced an unemployed man, Ebenezer Tetteh to two years in prison for stealing electrical cables at La, Accra.
Charged with theft, Tetteh pleaded guilty with an explanation. However, the court presided over by Mrs. Sedinam Awo Kwadam, ruled that his explanation confirmed his plea and subsequently convicted him.
The court ordered that the stolen cables remain in police custody until a rightful owner comes forward with proof of ownership.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Daniel Ofori Appiah, stated that the complainant and witnesses in the case were police personnel from the Cantonments Division. The accused resided at Apapa, a suburb of La, Accra.
On February 20, 2025, at approximately 01:00 am, the complainant and witnesses, who were on night patrol duty, stopped a taxicab near the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel.
During a routine search, the patrol team discovered a quantity of electrical cables in the vehicle. The accused, who was on board, claimed ownership of the cables.
However, following interrogations, the police suspected foul play as Tetteh failed to convincingly prove ownership. He was subsequently taken to the La Police Station along with the cables.
During investigations, Tetteh admitted to stealing the electrical cables but had yet to disclose the location of the theft. The police are still working to identify the rightful owner of the stolen items.
Former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Authority (NSA), Gifty Oware-Mensah, is set to present herself to the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) upon her return to the country Tuesday afternoon.
However, sources at the NIB suggest that she will be arrested upon arrival at Kotoka International Airport, where she will be taken into custody for questioning.
Reports indicate that key figures in the New Patriotic Party, under which she was appointed, are mobilizing to accompany her to the NIB offices.
The NIB is investigating her tenure at the NSA over allegations that ghost names were used to defraud the state of millions of cedis in allowances.
As the Deputy Executive Director responsible for administration and finance, Oware-Mensah is expected to play a pivotal role in the ongoing investigation. The alleged payroll fraud is believed to have cost the state GH₵50 million per month.
It is unclear how long the fraudulent scheme ran.
Over the weekend, the government announced an extradition process to bring back key suspects who allegedly fled the country to avoid justice.
The NIB recently arrested and interrogated Kwaku Ohene Djan, another former Deputy Executive Director of the NSA, as part of the ongoing probe into the allegations.

Former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Scheme, Gifty Oware-Mensah
Former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Scheme, Gifty Oware-Mensah, a member of the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has returned to Ghana after a brief time away from the country.
Oware-Mensah, who previously served under the Akufo-Addo government, has remained out of the public eye since the 2024 general elections.
Amid allegations linking her to the NSS payroll scandal, reports suggested she had fled to evade accountability.
However, in a statement on Friday, February 28, 2025, her legal team, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah and Partners, clarified that she had simply taken a post-election break.
A video circulating on social media shows Oware-Mensah at Kotoka International Airport, where she was welcomed by friends and family, confirming her return to the country.
According to reports, she is set to present herself to the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) for questioning.
On October 5, 2023, Oware-Mensah received overwhelming support from the 20 Women’s Premier League clubs during the Elective Congress in Tamale, securing a four-year term as the representative for women’s football on the GFA Executive Council.
A dynamic football administrator, she is also the owner of the Women’s Premier League club Berry Ladies and serves as the Chairperson of the Black Queens’ Management Committee.

The Accra East region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has initiated a series of customer clinics aimed at fostering direct engagement and educating customers on various operational issues.
The first clinic, held on February 28, 2025, at Adenta New Site, a community within the Adentan district attracted about 300 customers who participated in discussions on key topics affecting their electricity service.
The event, spearheaded by the Accra East regional communications team and the district team under the leadership of District Manager Benedicta Carr, addressed a range of customer concerns.
Notable discussions included billing discrepancies, illegal meter installations, challenges posed by unauthorized connections, power outages, and the effective use of the ECG Mobile App.
“We are committed to enhancing our service delivery and ensuring that our customers remain informed about their electricity usage and our policies,” Mrs. Carr stated during the clinic.
She added, “This initiative not only allows us to educate our customers but also provides an opportunity to listen to their concerns and feedback.”
According to the District Manager, one of the primary objectives of the clinic is to provide a platform for direct interaction between customers and ECG representatives, enabling participants to ask questions and seek clarification on complex billing issues and meter readings.
She indicated that the district will also host clinics in other communities, including Frafraha, Adenta Commandos, New Legon, Akatamanso, Borteyman, Agbogba, Nanakrom, Pantang, and Teiman, to further strengthen customer relationships and improve overall satisfaction with ECG services.
The Customer Clinic is designed not only to facilitate complaint resolution but also to serve as an educational session where customers learn about energy conservation practices and recent updates to billing and payment systems.
Participants were encouraged to voice their grievances, with ECG staff on hand to provide immediate assistance and potential solutions. According to the communication team, this reflects ECG’s commitment to addressing customer concerns in real time and fostering a more responsive service environment.
The event concluded with a feedback session that emphasized the importance of customer input in shaping the company’s operations and enhancing service quality. Participants expressed appreciation for the initiative and reiterated the need for similar engagements in the future.

Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Frederick Acheampong, has said that he is open to André Dede Ayew being called to join the Black Stars squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Alhaji Saani, a former Second Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has taken a strong swipe at Martin Amidu, the former Special Prosecutor, over his recent criticism of President John Dramani Mahama.
According to Ghana Web, Saani accused Amidu of being driven by bitterness and envy, suggesting that his harsh words against Mahama stem from his own failures while serving in the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration.
Speaking on Okay FM on March 2, 2025, Saani questioned Amidu’s performance as Special Prosecutor, arguing that despite being given the opportunity to tackle corruption, he failed to produce any significant results.
“Martin Amidu is speaking out of bitterness. They appointed him as Attorney General, and he lost most of his cases. Akufo-Addo later made him a Special Prosecutor, yet he failed to achieve anything,” Saani said.
He further criticized Amidu’s attacks on Mahama’s assessment of Ghana’s economic challenges, labeling them as unwarranted and driven by personal grievances.
Amidu had earlier dismissed Mahama’s statement that “Ghana is a crime scene” under the Akufo-Addo government, describing it as a “worn-out excuse.”

Former Deputy Director of the National Service Authority (NSA), Gifty Oware Mensah, has returned to Ghana amid an ongoing investigation into a ghost names scandal at the NSA.
Reports indicate that Oware Mensah, who had been in the United States after the elections, arrived in the country on Tuesday afternoon and was met at the airport by some family members.
Her arrival follows reports that officials of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) had been seeking her arrest in connection with the scandal.
Her return comes shortly after Former Deputy Director of Operations at the NSA, Kwaku Ohene Gyan, popularly known as Osonoba, was detained by the NIB.

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has condemned a supposed attempt by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) to arrest Gifty Oware-Mensah, a former deputy executive director of the National Service Scheme (NSS).
Speaking to journalists after Oware-Mensah arrived in the country on Tuesday, 4th March, the Member of Parliament argued that she should have been invited in a more civil manner to respond to the allegations against her, rather than being ambushed at the airport.
“Sometimes this ‘Rambo-style’ approach doesn’t help. If you want to invite someone, you can do so. The person is a public official, so there should be no problem,” he said.
“If the person arrives with a lawyer or states that they do not need one, and is willing to answer questions, and if bail is necessary, arrangements can be made. I think that is what is required by the law,” he added.
Before Oware-Mensah arrived, JoyNews had picked up reports that the NIB had laid an ambush to arrest her once she touched down. However, that did not happen following reports of some backdoor conversations between the NIB and the Minority leader.
She’s now expected to report the NIB voluntarily.
Background
President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the NIB to conduct an immediate investigation into the operations of the National Service Authority (NSA), following the discovery of 81,885 suspected ghost names on its payroll.
This issue was revealed in a report by the Fourth Estate, an independent anti-corruption media organisation.
A press statement issued by the presidency on 12th February noted that the discrepancies were further identified after a headcount of active National Service personnel, which was initiated by the Minister for Finance as a prerequisite for clearing allowance arrears dating back to August 2024.
As the Deputy Executive Director, Gifty Oware-Mensah had responsibility for administration and finance of the NSS and is expected to be a key witness in the ongoing investigations.
The alleged payroll fraud is reported to have cost the state a staggering GHȼ50 million each month.
It is unclear how long the alleged scheme went on.
Over the weekend, the government announced an extradition process to bring key suspects in alleged malfeasance back to Ghana, following reports that some individuals wanted to assist in investigations had fled the country to evade justice.
The NIB recently detained and questioned Kwaku Ohene Djan, also a former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Authority, over the raging allegations.

To contain the prevailing High-Tech Galamsey (HTG) immediately, as an illegality, or contain it gradually has become an obvious dilemma for Ghana. Containing the HTG operations immediately is the right way to go!
Understandably, those who may benefit directly from the ‘loot’ of the ongoing galamsey business are putting up resistance and should be exposed if need be.
Considering the rate at which our forest cover is removed, water bodies are polluted, and biodiversity is rapidly lost via indiscriminate HTG operations, we are sitting on a time bomb to blow up on us as a nation and future generations if pragmatic steps are not taken to address it timeously.
As an advocate for immediate containment of the prevailing HTG menace, I feel distressed to consume Media reports of HTG operations near our major rivers and forest reserves going on as we speak, according to Mr. Erastus Donkor of Joy News.
It appears to me that Ghanaians are losing sight of the heightened HTG phenomenon going on for the past 8 years and think that we are fighting the normal, traditional galamsey that has been with us for several decades.
The prevailing HTG is far more destructive than the traditional galamsey, as evidenced by heavily polluted rivers and destroyed forest reserves now.
The previous Akufo-Addo-led regime miserably failed the fight against this HTG menace because of self-inflicted, unchecked mining activities coupled with an insincere and half-hearted approach adopted by his government to fight this dangerous land use practice.
Although the previous Akufo-Addo-led regime made frantic efforts, including military campaigns and putting his ‘Presidency on the line in this matter’ to address this HTG phenomenon, they turned out to be ineffective due to a lack of a dedicated and systematic approach from his government.
Considering the renewed energy and good signals given by the Mahama-led government to tackle this ongoing galamsey matter, I am still concerned about the measures taken and to be taken to find lasting solutions to this dangerous HTG issue.
Indeed, we cannot expect to generate new and sustainable results in the HTG fight by relying on old approaches that did not work well in the past. We should rather review those old approaches and see what to change and make them work better in this fight. It is, thus, imperative for the Mahama-led government to modify the old approach(es) used by former President Akufo-Addo, which did not work.
For instance, the Mahama-led government should use a systematic approach with a high sense of urgency by imposing a state of emergency on galamsey, assess the extent of damage, identify and arrest saboteurs pretending to be doing legal small-scale mining, as well as providing education to people to help the government to contain this HTG debacle.
With the 18-member committee put in place by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, I hope a systematic approach will be considered to contain this raging HTG problem while looking for alternative livelihood opportunities for affected Galamseyers and other unemployed youth in the system and strengthening the regulatory regime on mining.
We cannot afford to allow the destruction to be going on in the name of providing jobs first to affected Galamseyers who are engaging in illegality and destroying our natural environment.
Another effective way to start is the active involvement of all local community leaders and chiefs in affected areas to immediately help the government to sensitize people in their communities regarding the adverse effects of HTG operations on them.
As part of the solution, a regular update on the HTG fight, including government measures taken, should be put in place. This will help Ghanaians to collectively discuss and find lasting solutions to this HTG menace.
While at this, a National Dialogue on Galamsey should be held as soon as possible to enable key stakeholders to make presentations and brainstorm on HTG to create nationwide awareness of this environmental emergency (see details on previous publication: https://www.modernghana.com/news/1372253/a-clarion-call-to-president-mahama-to-hold-a-nati.html, 16 Jan 2025).
Although we should commend President Mahama on his demonstrated commitment to dealing with the galamsey menace in less than two months in office, there should be more urgency and sustained attention paid to the HTG fight.
This HTG fight is winnable, but we should systematically address it by modifying the measures used previously and finding sustainable solutions instead of using a ‘firefighting’ approach. Let us not expect new or demonstrable results in the HTG fight with old ways of tackling it.
Professor John Gatsi, a member of the planning committee for the National Economic Dialogue, has emphasised that the recommendations from the forum will play a pivotal role in shaping Ghana’s economic trajectory.
Speaking to Channel One News, Prof. Gatsi highlighted the importance of the dialogue in fostering inclusive discussions and generating actionable solutions to address the country’s economic challenges.
The two-day forum, which brought together experts, policymakers, academia, traditional leaders, and private sector representatives, focused on key areas such as sustainable macroeconomic stability, economic transformation, infrastructure development, structural reforms, private sector-led growth, governance improvements, and anti-corruption efforts.
According to Prof. Gatsi, the recommendations from the dialogue will be integrated into the framework of the National Development Commission, ensuring their alignment with Ghana’s long-term development goals.
“Looking at this from a broader perspective, an economy should be managed where there is inclusivity. That is why during a period of crisis, you allow the best of your people to come together and think to see how you can get out of the crisis.
“For me, this is also a feature for many economists, some economists have a standing committee that, from time to time, they come up with solutions for them. So, it is very clear that the prospects outweigh the fears of the people,” he stated.
He noted that the National Economic Dialogue should be institutionalised such that it will be held after every two years to assess the progress of the policies they have put in place.
Addressing concerns about the absence of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the dialogue, Prof. Gatsi maintained that their non-participation does not invalidate the consensus being built.
He emphasised that the forum achieved sufficient inclusivity by engaging a wide range of stakeholders, including political parties, parliamentarians, traditional leaders, academia, and private sector representatives.
“You cannot force everybody to be part of a consensus. What we want to achieve is inclusive engagement and we have invited all political parties, parliamentarians, chiefs, experts, academia, and others. I believe that we have achieved sufficient inclusive engagement.
“So, that is what we are using to access that work we are doing here. So, if one political party says they will not come, they are assessing the reason why they will not come against the prospects of them participating and perhaps they realise that if they don’t participate it doesn’t make any difference,” he stated.
