US court awards Anas $18m in defamation suit against Ken Agyapong

0

Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has secured a significant legal victory in the United States, winning an $18 million defamation lawsuit against former Ghanaian Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong.

The verdict was delivered by a jury in Essex County, New Jersey.

The lawsuit, filed on May 17, 2022, in the Essex County Superior Court, accused Kennedy Agyapong and media personality Frederick Asamoah of making defamatory statements against Anas during an episode of The Daddy Fred Show, an online program popular among Ghanaian audiences in the United States.

During the program, Agyapong allegedly made a series of damaging and false claims, including accusing Anas of being a criminal, a thief, and responsible for the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

Suale, a key member of Anas’ investigative team, was assassinated in 2019 following the release of Number 12, a documentary that exposed corruption in Ghanaian football.

The court documents highlighted several specific allegations made by Agyapong, including:

  • Falsely claiming that Anas had been convicted of crimes in Ghana.
  • Accusing Anas of orchestrating Ahmed Suale’s murder.
  • Asserting that Anas was responsible for the deaths of multiple Chinese nationals in Ghana.
  • Labeling Anas as a thief.

This U.S. legal triumph comes after a setback for Anas in Ghana, where he had earlier pursued a defamation case against Kennedy Agyapong in 2018.

Anas had sought GH¢25 million in damages, citing defamatory materials published by Agyapong. However, the Accra High Court ruled against Anas on March 15, 2023, stating that his investigative methods resembled “investigative terrorism” rather than legitimate journalism.

Justice Eric Baah, who presided over the Ghanaian case, upheld Agyapong’s claims that Anas was an extortionist and a blackmailer. The Supreme Court of Ghana later reinforced this ruling in 2024 with a narrow 3-2 decision.

Undeterred by the unfavorable rulings in Ghana, Anas sought justice at the international level. His persistence paid off when the Essex County jury ruled in his favor, awarding him $18 million in damages, marking a decisive victory for the journalist in his long-running battle for reputation and justice.

Minister for Labour, YEA launch work abroad programme

The Ghana Work Abroad Programme is designed to open doors in industries The Ghana Work Abroad Programme is designed to open doors in industries

The Minister of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, in partnership with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), has officially launched the Ghana Work Abroad Programme, an initiative designed to connect Ghanaian talent with global employment opportunities in a safe and structured way.

Speaking at the launch event at La Palm Beach Hotel in Accra, Dr. Pelpuo emphasized that this programme is more than just about finding jobs,it’s about changing lives.

“Every young person deserves a chance to build a better future, whether here in Ghana or abroad. This initiative provides a legal and safe pathway for our youth to gain skills, earn an income, and contribute to Ghana’s economy through remittances,” Dr. Pelpuo said, his voice filled with optimism.

The Ghana Work Abroad Programme is designed to open doors in industries such as artisanship, hospitality, transportation (drivers and logistics), agriculture, and construction.

Applicants will go through a transparent selection process, receive certified training in Romania, and be placed in ethical, well-monitored jobs overseas.

Dr. Pelpuo assured the public that there will be full government oversight to ensure that Ghanaian workers are treated fairly and provided with proper working conditions.

He also announced that bilateral agreements with host countries will be established to guarantee fair wages, legal protections, and worker benefits.

For young professionals like Kwame Asare, a trained welder from Kumasi, this program offers a lifeline. “I’ve struggled to find consistent work despite my skills. This gives me a real chance to earn, save, and support my family,” he shared, his eyes filled with hope.

The Youth Employment Agency (YEA), a key implementing partner, will oversee the registration and training of selected applicants. CEO of YEA, Malik Basintale, noted that the program is part of a larger vision to combat unemployment through innovative and sustainable means.

“We are not just sending people abroad to work; we are investing in their future and in Ghana’s economic growth. By ensuring they are well-trained and legally employed, we are setting them up for long-term success,” he said.

Beyond job creation, the initiative addresses the dangers of irregular migration by providing a safer alternative.

Many young Ghanaians risk their lives seeking better opportunities abroad, often falling into the hands of traffickers or exploitative employers.

With backing from international partners including the European Union, GIZ, IOM, ICMPD, and the ILO, the program has strong support to ensure its success. Inter-Ministerial Steering and Technical Committees have also been put in place to oversee policy implementation and ensure smooth coordination.

For many, this initiative represents not just a job, but a chance to redefine their future. The Ghana Work Abroad Program is a beacon of hope—one that promises new beginnings for Ghana’s youth.

2024/25 Ghana Premier League: Week 20 Match Preview

0

Heart of Lions will host Dreams FC at the Kpando Sports Stadium on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, for the rescheduled Ghana Premier League Round 20 game. The home team, placed second in the league, will aim to solidify their spot in the top half of the table.

Dreams FC, ranked 13th, will be looking to secure a positive result to keep themselves away from the relegation zone. The ‘Still Believe’ squad is boosted by their narrow victory over Hearts of Oak at the weekend.

The two sides have met three times in 2024, with the Lions having the upper hand. They won two of the encounters (2-1 and 1-0), while the other match ended in a 2-2 draw.

This record suggests that the Lions have been the better side in recent meetings, but Dreams FC has shown they can hold their own.

Lions enter this encounter with inconsistent form, winning two and losing two of their previous five matches.

Dreams FC have also been inconsistent but have recorded two victories and two draws in their last five games.

Lions have been strong at home, and their superior head-to-head record makes them the favorites. They have lost just once in their last 22 home games.

However, Dreams FC’s resilience could make this a hard-fought battle. A close match is expected, with the Lions likely to edge it by a narrow margin.

Nigeria declares state of emergency in Rivers State over pipeline vandalism

0

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency on Tuesday in oil-producing Rivers State and suspended the state governor, his deputy and all lawmakers.

Tinubu, in a television broadcast, said he had received security reports in the last two days of “disturbing incidents of vandalization of pipelines by some militants without the governor taking any action to curtail them.”

“With all these and many more, no good and responsible president will standby and allow the grave situation to continue without taking remedial steps prescribed by the constitution to address the situation in the state,” added Tinubu.

Police said earlier they were investigating the cause of a blast in Rivers state that resulted in a fire on Nigeria’s Trans Niger Pipeline, a major oil artery transporting crude from onshore oilfields to the Bonny export terminal.

Rivers, in the Niger Delta, is a major source of crude oil and militants have in the past blown up pipelines, hampering production and exports.

The state has been embroiled in a political crisis pitting factions of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) against each other. The state lawmakers had also threatened to impeach the governor and his deputy.

Tinubu’s state of emergency enables the federal government to make regulations to run the state and also allow authorities to easily deploy security forces to bring order if needed.

Tinubu nominated a retired vice admiral as caretaker to run the affairs of Rivers State for an initial six months.

The president said he had sent a copy of his proclamation to the National Assembly, which can endorse or reject his decision.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this declaration does not affect the judicial arm of Rivers State, which shall continue to function in accordance with their constitutional mandate,” said Tinubu.

During his visit to India, he emphasised the importance of Africa having a stronger voice in global economic and governance discussions.

At the bilateral engagements with his Indian counterpart, His Excellency Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Mr Ablakwa expressed appreciation for India’s role in advocating for Africa’s place in international decision-making bodies.

“India’s commitment to promoting the African Union’s membership in the G20 is a testament to its dedication to a more inclusive and equitable global order,” he stated.

He added that Africa’s representation in the G20 would enhance economic cooperation and give the continent a platform to influence key global policies.

He noted that India’s support aligns with Ghana’s broader vision of strengthening South-South cooperation.

“With Africa’s rising economic significance, it is only right that we have a seat at the table where critical global economic policies are shaped,” he remarked.

Mr Ablakwa’s visit to India, following an invitation from his Indian counterpart, reflects Ghana’s commitment to deepening diplomatic and economic relations.

He reaffirmed Ghana’s support for Africa’s full integration into global institutions and expressed optimism that India’s backing would help accelerate the AU’s active participation in the G20.

Afenyo-Markin questions IGP’s 40-year service record

0

IGP, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno IGP, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno

Minority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has raised eyebrows in Parliament over the newly appointed Inspector General of Police’s (IGP) length of service, questioning whether his tenure aligns with the mandatory retirement regulations of the Ghana Police Service.

Speaking during a parliamentary session, Afenyo-Markin referenced a statement made by the Minister of Interior, which indicated that the new IGP has served in the police force for 40 years.

The Minority Leader, however, expressed curiosity about the timeline of the IGP’s career and hinted at the need to verify whether he is due for retirement soon.

“Mr Speaker, the minister responsible for government communications told the country that the new IGP has spent 40 years in the service—40 years as a police officer. So, at the right time, we would calculate whether he entered at 2019 or 2018, his age, and all,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

His remarks subtly raised concerns about whether the IGP’s appointment complies with the service’s age and tenure policies, given that senior officers in the Ghana Police Service are expected to retire at a certain age.

While he did not explicitly accuse the government of any wrongdoing, his comments suggest a growing interest in the transparency of high-profile appointments in the security sector.

Beyond his remarks on the IGP’s tenure, Afenyo-Markin also pressed for a timeline on an ongoing investigation into allegations of tax overreach by the police.

However, his scrutiny of the IGP’s service record remains a key talking point, as questions continue to swirl around how long the new police chief will serve before mandatory retirement.

America’s Ohio University now teaches Akan, Asante Twi at undergraduate, postgraduate levels

Asantehene, Otumfo Osei Tutu II Asantehene, Otumfo Osei Tutu II

Ohio University (OU), USA, is now offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Asante Twi, a dialect of the Akan language spoken in Ghana.

On the university’s website, it states, “Over 40% of the Ghanaian population speak various dialects of Akan, a language featured in literature and often chosen by students interested in conducting research in Ghana or applying for a Fulbright grant to study in Ghana.”

The Asante Twi program is available to students through the African Studies and Linguistics departments at OU.

“The choice of this variety of the Akan language is primarily due to the literary attention given to it in Ghana and the fact that the dialects of the Twi variety (Asante and Akuapem) are mutually intelligible,” OU explained.

“Twi and Fante (a variety of the Akan language spoken in the western and coastal areas) are also mutually intelligible. It is, in essence, the most widely spoken language in the country, understood by a majority of the population. Visitors to Ghana should have no problem communicating with the people if they know English (the official language) and Twi.”

The university outlined how it plans to teach the West African language, which “belongs to the Kwa subdivision of the Niger–Congo group of African languages.”

It stated, “OHIO language courses focus on all aspects of the language: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Our language model also emphasizes the importance of culture. Language students not only learn Akan but also gain an understanding of its deep connections to the culture, history, traditions, and societal norms of the people who speak it.”

“OHIO Akan language courses focus on the language’s structure and how to communicate effectively while also exploring customs, beliefs, values, arts, literature, cuisine, social norms, and historical events that have shaped the language and its speakers. This approach helps students communicate more effectively and appropriately in various social and cultural contexts.”

Asante Twi is mostly spoken by the Asantes of central Ghana, whose leader is the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Mahama’s decision to appoint female security heads is a bold step – FOSDA

President Mahama has been commended for appointing women as heads of key security agencies President Mahama has been commended for appointing women as heads of key security agencies

The Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA) has praised President John Dramani Mahama for his decision to appoint women as heads of key security institutions in Ghana.

The organization described the move as a bold and progressive step toward gender equality and the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Agenda.

FOSDA highlighted the appointment of DDGP 3 Patience Baffoe-Bonnie as Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service and DCFO Daniella Mawusi Ntow-Sapong as Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to inclusive security governance.

“These appointments reflect the government’s dedication to creating opportunities for women in security leadership and contribute significantly to the UN Security Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security,” the organization stated.

Congratulating the newly appointed security heads, FOSDA emphasized their wealth of expertise, noting that “Baffoe-Bonnie, a corrections and human rights advocate, previously spearheaded reforms in prison health systems, while Ntow-Sapong has distinguished herself in fire safety and operational efficiency.”

FOSDA urged the government to sustain this progress by ensuring gender-responsive budgeting and maintaining accountability mechanisms to promote gender parity in security services.

“We encourage the President John Mahama-led government to sustain these gains and appoint more women into leadership positions in the Security Services,” said Theodora W. Anti, Executive Director of FOSDA.

Health must always be a priority – Ahiagbah supports Afenyo-Markin’s hospital proposal

0

Richard Ahiagbah has urged Ghanaians to avoid politicizing the Minority Leader’s call for a dedicated hospital for MPs, insisting that the discussion should center on the urgent need to improve the country’s healthcare infrastructure.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, the NPP Communications Director explained that the essence of Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s proposal is not exclusivity but rather the need for better medical facilities for everyone, including MPs.

“People are twisting his words to mean he wants a special hospital only for MPs. That is not what he is saying. He is drawing our attention to the fact that we need more health infrastructure,” Ahiagbah clarified.

He further criticized the government’s failure to continue the Agenda 111 project, expressing disappointment that hospitals planned to serve ordinary Ghanaians have been left incomplete.

“If you go to villages and districts, people are suffering because they lack hospitals. Agenda 111 was supposed to close that gap, yet we are not continuing it. Why? We cannot keep saying UGMC or Ridge Hospital was built when rural areas have nothing,” he lamented.

According to Ahiagbah, the country must prioritize health investments to prevent needless deaths.

“A lot of people die from things they shouldn’t die from. Sometimes, it’s inefficiencies in the system, lack of medical equipment, or just poor access to healthcare. We are losing people for no reason,” he stated.

He also called on President Mahama’s administration to focus on completing existing health projects, rather than engaging in political debates that do not serve the interest of Ghanaians.

“The Minority Leader’s suggestion should push us to have a bigger discussion. We should be asking why Agenda 111 has stalled, not attacking him for bringing up the need for better healthcare. Health is wealth, and if we don’t have it, nothing else matters,” Ahiagbah emphasized.

He concluded by urging the government and citizens alike to push for more investments in healthcare, saying, “Let’s take the politics out and focus on saving lives.”

I never voted against Mike Oquaye – Adwoa Safo breaks silence on Speaker election allegations

Former MP for Dome/Kwabenya, Adwoa Safo Former MP for Dome/Kwabenya, Adwoa Safo

After a long period of silence on political matters, Adwoa Safo has finally addressed allegations surrounding her role in the controversial Speaker of Parliament election.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM monitored by MyNewsGh, she firmly denied claims that she voted against Professor Mike Oquaye, the NPP’s preferred candidate, in favour of the NDC’s Alban Bagbin.

“I want to make it clear that I did not vote against Mike Oquaye,” Safo stated. She explained that before the vote, she had already informed then-Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu of her decision.

However, she accused him of betraying her by suggesting that she had supported Bagbin instead.

Recounting events from that day, Safo revealed that she was stuck in traffic and had to be escorted by dispatch riders sent by Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu to ensure she arrived in Parliament on time to support the party’s candidate.

“If my intention was to vote for Bagbin, why would I go through all that stress just to arrive in time?” she questioned.

Beyond the allegations, Safo claimed that there were deliberate efforts within the party to sabotage her, suggesting that spiritual forces were at play.

She expressed disappointment that despite more than five NPP MPs voting for Bagbin, the blame was unfairly shifted onto her.

When will the investigation be completed? – Afenyo-Markin to interior Minister

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has raised concerns in Parliament regarding the timeline for an ongoing investigation into a critical national security issue.

Speaking during proceedings monitored by MyNewsGh, Afenyo-Markin pressed for clarity on when the process would be concluded and when the findings would be made public.

“Mr. Speaker, when should we expect this investigation to be completed? And when will the report be submitted for us to know? Because this is a serious matter of national importance,” he questioned.

He acknowledged the importance of the investigation into allegations of tax overreach by the police but insisted on a concrete timeline.

“It’s a good effort that you are investigating, but the question is, when are we expecting the investigation to be completed, and when will the report be submitted?” he reiterated.

Afenyo-Markin also took the opportunity to congratulate the newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP), whose introduction was made by the Interior Minister.

“Mr. Speaker, the minister, in his answer, took the opportunity to introduce the new IGP. I want to congratulate him on his appointment,” he stated.

However, the Deputy Majority Leader pointed out an interesting detail regarding the IGP’s tenure in the police service.

“Suffice it to state that in the statement from the minister responsible for government communications, he told the country that the new IGP has spent 40 years in the service—40 years as a police officer. So, at the right time, we would calculate whether he entered in 2019 or 2018, his age, and all,” he remarked.

Minority’s performance superior despite smaller numbers

0

Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South, has expressed confidence in the effectiveness of the Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament, despite their smaller numbers.

He noted that various organizations and public assessments have ranked the Minority’s performance higher than that of the Majority in the early months of the 9th Parliament.

Rev. Fordjour emphasized that the “88 Mighty Minority” is operating at peak effectiveness, making a significant impact in parliamentary proceedings.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Channel One TV on Tuesday, March 18, Rev. Ntim Fordjour stated, “Absolutely, you can tell right from the onset, the first two months of the 9th Parliament, we have had many organisations and institutions ranking the performance of the Minority and Majority and how the public perceives us.

“Clearly, a majority of them have ranked our performance as more effective and higher than the Majority. With all their numbers, and so, without being disrespectful, but, with the greatest of respect, the 88 Mighty Minority are at our effective best.”

‘Truth prevails’ – Anas hails $18M US court victory against Kennedy Agyapong for defamation

0

Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has declared his $18 million defamation victory against former MP Kennedy Agyapong in New Jersey as a significant triumph for justice and press freedom.

Speaking after the Essex County Superior Court verdict, Anas described the ruling as a “resounding affirmation that falsehood and character assassination have no place in our society” and a crucial step in Ghana’s democratic journey.

“Yesterday, an eight-member jury delivered a unanimous verdict finding Kennedy Agyapong liable for defamation and awarding damages of 18 million U.S. dollars,” Anas announced.

“These damages arise from statements he made following the airing of the BBC documentary on corruption, Betraying the Game, on October 28, 2018.”

For Anas, the ruling goes beyond a personal victory—it is a beacon of hope for journalists and citizens committed to accountability and transparency.

“This decision is not merely a legal triumph—it reinforces our commitment to building a robust democracy that serves all ordinary Ghanaians,” he stated.

He underscored the significance of winning a defamation case in the United States, noting the high legal threshold required.

“Proving defamation in the United States is an exceptionally high hurdle, requiring clear and convincing evidence of malice,” Anas explained.

“That the jury ruled unanimously in my favour underscores that Mr Agyapong acted both maliciously and recklessly in his attacks against me.”

Drawing a sharp contrast with his experience in Ghana, Anas lamented the failure of the Ghanaian judiciary to deliver justice when he pursued a similar case against Agyapong in 2018.

“Regrettably, the situation in Ghana was starkly different,” he said.

“Despite Mr. Agyapong’s own admission of lacking evidence to support his calumnious claims, Justice Eric Baah of the Accra High Court not only denied me justice but also unjustly portrayed me—the civil plaintiff—as a criminal.”

He highlighted how the Ghanaian ruling was later condemned by Supreme Court Justice Kulendi, who described it as a “violent abuse of judicial authority.”

According to Anas, this underscores the systemic flaws in Ghana’s judiciary that demand urgent reform. “Such outcomes are a stark reminder of the systemic flaws within our Ghanaian judicial system—flaws that demand urgent reform,” he stressed.

In contrast, he lauded the fairness of the proceedings in the U.S. court, where both Kennedy Agyapong and his brother, Ralph Agyapong, took the stand.

“Presided over by Judge Jeffrey B. Beacham, the case saw Mr Agyapong take the stand alongside his brother. As he had in Ghana, he introduced audiovisual evidence under the title Who Watches the Watchman and even cited the Ghanaian judgment in his defence,” Anas recounted.

“Despite these efforts, our case—thoroughly prepared and presented by my legal team led by Andrew Deheer, Esq.—prevailed with an 8-0 verdict on every count.”

Anas declared that this ruling sends a clear warning to politicians who believe they can attack journalists without consequences.

“Today’s outcome sends a powerful message, particularly to Ghanaian politicians: you cannot take the media for granted,” he stated firmly.

“The press plays an indispensable role in scrutinizing power and holding leaders accountable, and any attempt to undermine this essential function will be met with resolute resistance.”

He expressed deep appreciation for his legal team – Andrew Deheer, Arthur Wemegah, Evans Selasi Adika, and Odei Krow, – as well as his supporters who stood by him throughout this battle.

“I extend my deepest gratitude to my legal team, my supporters, and to everyone who has stood by my side in this relentless pursuit of truth,” he said.

While awaiting the final determination on punitive damages, Anas remains resolute in his commitment to fighting corruption.

“The fight against corruption continues unabated. We will persist in rooting out graft and holding accountable the bad actors in our society,” he declared.

Bawumia’s digitalisation agenda proven right – Franklin Cudjoe

0

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has recognised the success of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s digitalisation agenda, stating that recent developments have confirmed the effectiveness of his vision.

According to Cudjoe, the government’s investment in digital infrastructure has significantly enhanced efficiency across various sectors, disproving earlier scepticism.

He referenced data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), which attributed higher economic growth in 2024 to digitalisation.

This, he noted, aligns with remarks made by former finance minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam during a press conference earlier this month.

Cudjoe asserted that, based on the GSS data, Dr. Amin was correct in stating that Bawumia’s digitalisation initiatives contributed to the country’s improved economic performance.

Highlighting the impact of digital reforms, he pointed to advancements in service delivery, financial inclusion, and governance.

“Bawumia’s digitalisation drive has yielded tangible results, making processes easier for businesses and citizens alike,” he stated.

He emphasised that while initial doubts surrounded the feasibility of such large-scale reforms, Ghana’s current progress in digital transformation proves that the country is on the right path.

Despite acknowledging these achievements, Cudjoe also identified areas that require further attention, including cybersecurity and improved internet accessibility in rural areas.

He urged the current government to address these challenges to fully harness the benefits of digitalisation and ensure inclusive technological progress for all Ghanaians.

Minority will calculate IGP Yohuno’s real age soon – Afenyo-Markin

0

The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has raised concerns over the age and tenure of newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

Speaking in Parliament on March 18, 2025, Afenyo-Markin cited an official statement indicating that IGP Yohuno has served in the Ghana Police Service for 40 years.

Given his reported age of 60, he questioned at what age Yohuno joined the service, suggesting the need for further scrutiny.

Christian Tetteh Yohuno was appointed IGP on March 13, 2025, replacing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. His appointment has sparked discussions about his length of service and its implications for his tenure.

Afenyo-Markin stated that the Minority intends to investigate the matter further to ensure transparency and adherence to public service regulations.

“The Minister in his answer took the opportunity to introduce the new IGP. I want to congratulate him on his appointment. Suffice it to say that in the statement from the Minister responsible for Government Communications, he told the country that the new IGP has spent forty years in the service.

“Forty years as a police officer, so at the right time we will calculate whether he entered at age 20, 19, or 18—his age and all.

“That is just by the way, I wish him. I am only doing the mathematics as to whether the IGP is going to retire very soon. But Mr Speaker, that’s beside the point,” he stated.

Leader of Alliance for Restoration of Civil Rights arrested for allegedly threatening IGP

William Yirenkyi, the founder and leader of the Alliance for Restoration of Civil Rights William Yirenkyi, the founder and leader of the Alliance for Restoration of Civil Rights

The Ghana Police Service has reportedly arrested William Yirenkyi, the founder and leader of the Alliance for the Restoration of Civil Rights.

According to reports, Yirenkyi was arrested on March 18, 2025, after receiving an invitation from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters to appear before them in relation to a complaint allegedly lodged against him.

In an exclusive interview during his arrest, Yirenkyi disclosed that he was taken into custody on charges of allegedly threatening the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and is set to be processed for court on March 19, 2025.

“They invited me to the police headquarters with my lawyer, Martin Kpebu, and after our arrival, they arrested me for allegedly threatening the IGP. They have brought a complainant here, telling all kinds of lies,” he said in a phone interview with Homebase TV journalist Beauty Etornam Amedzotsi.

The activist has recently been engaged in a series of legal battles with the police over multiple issues.

It may be recalled that the Ghana Police Service failed to attend a mediation hearing convened by the Right to Information Commission (RTI) on March 10, 2025, to address multiple complaints filed against the Service by William Kofi Yirenkyi.

The hearing, scheduled in accordance with Section 44(c) of the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989), was intended to facilitate negotiations over three pending requests for information submitted by Yirenkyi.

However, neither the then Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, nor any representative from the Ghana Police Service honored the invitation.

Speaking after the session, Yirenkyi expressed disappointment with the police’s absence, particularly criticizing the IGP for what he described as a blatant disregard for the law.

“We came here today for the hearing that the Right to Information Commission requested us to have with the Inspector General of Police, but when we arrived, neither he nor his representatives showed up.

“This continues to demonstrate that the IGP refuses to abide by the directives of the RTI Commission,” he stated.

He further clarified that his requests were not an attack on the police but rather an effort to exercise his right to access information. He urged the police to be more responsive to information requests.

According to Yirenkyi, his pending requests include:

Three police investigation reports related to armed robbery cases yet to be addressed.

An arrest report regarding his own detention and subsequent release, for which he seeks clarification on why the charges were dropped.

The RTI Commission, after deliberations, instructed Yirenkyi to submit a written petition detailing the exact nature of the information being requested.

The Commission also assured him that it would write to the Inspector General of Police to demand an explanation for the police’s absence at the hearing and to facilitate the release of the requested information.

Galamsey: Minority not against revocation of LI 2462

0

Manhyia North MP Akwasi Konadu has clarified the Minority’s stance on Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, which seeks to revoke permissions for mining in forest reserves.

This comes after the NPP Minority insisted that the LI undergo a pre-laying process before being formally introduced in Parliament.

LI 2462, officially known as the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulations 2022, currently permits mining in forest reserves if deemed in the national interest.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Tuesday, March 18, Konadu emphasized that the Minority is not against revoking the regulation but wants parliamentary procedures to be followed properly.

“The Minority is not against the LI, the revocation of portions of the LI which gives right to individuals to mine in forest reserves. What the Minority sought to do today was that the processes of passing an LI ought to be followed,” he stated.

The proposed LI has sparked debate in Parliament, with the Majority pushing for its swift passage, while the Minority insists on procedural adherence to ensure transparency and accountability.

Adjaye Associates reports £720,000 pre-tax loss amid falling revenue

0

Adjaye Associates has reported a pre-tax loss of £720,000, a significant decline from the £2.5 million profit recorded in its previous trading period.

Published on Monday, March 17 at Companies House, the accounts for the year ending December 31, 2023, reveal that David Adjaye’s firm saw a turnover drop of more than £3 million, falling from £20.4 million in 2022 to £17.1 million in 2023.

The company attributed part of its loss to a one-off exceptional item of £1.46 million, described as a “provision against withholding tax debtors.”

The firm’s workload in Asia dropped sharply from £4.8 million to £891,500, while income from the Middle East declined slightly from £14.1 million to £13 million. However, revenue increased in Africa (£261,000 to £1.4 million), the UK (£684,000 to £984,000), and the Americas (£398,000 to £641,000).

The financial period covered by the accounts coincides with the publication of sexual misconduct allegations against David Adjaye by the Financial Times—claims he has consistently denied.

During the same year, the firm implemented redundancies, reducing its London workforce, which stood at 110 employees at the time. By 2023, the total staff count had dropped to 85, with turnover per employee declining from £213,000 in 2022 to £202,000 in 2023.

Despite the reported loss, the company paid out a dividend of £1.89 million.

In the strategic report accompanying the figures, company director David Adjaye wrote:

“2023 was a commercially challenging year for the construction industry at large and this is reflected in our financial reporting for the period.

“Our position as one of the most diverse practices in the world, recognised for the representation we bring to architecture and for the quality and social impact of our work, together with our ability to be agile with resourcing, is a resilient basis from which to recover from a temporary downturn.”

The report, which describes the studio as having “built a robust reputation for both its built portfolio and intellectual and cross-cultural endeavors,” noted that Adjaye Associates continues to secure projects across the UK, the Americas, the Middle East, and Africa.

The firm has also won new commissions, including a major art project in Saudi Arabia and a large-scale residential development in France.

FIFA supports massive transformation of Nigeria Technical Centre

0

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Tuesday launched a groundbreaking transformation of the facilities of the Technical Centre situated in the national capital, Abuja, to meet global standards.

Funded by the world football governing body, FIFA, through its development program, FIFA Forward, to the tune of USD 4,800,000, the expansion will include reconstruction of existing synthetic pitches, the addition of new natural and synthetic grass pitches, and the construction of a modern football hostel to house the various national teams.

The initiative aims to equip Nigeria’s national teams with a world-class facility that supports their development. The upgraded technical centre will serve as a dedicated home for all national teams, reducing accommodation and travel expenses while ensuring better team management and coordination.

Also, the project is designed to enhance football infrastructure, provide top-tier training facilities, and cut operational costs while boosting revenue through sponsorships and marketing.

NFF president Ibrahim Musa Gusau said: “The NFF is excited about the Players’ Hostel and new training pitches. It is a transformational project around our infrastructure for the national teams, and we are grateful to FIFA for providing the funds for these amazing facilities.

“Building a players’ hostel and having new training pitches will not only enhance team management, but it will also substantially reduce expenditure in these areas and enable us to commit more funds to grassroots development programs.”

The direct beneficiaries of this project include Nigeria’s national teams, youth and women’s squads, league clubs, and academies, while compete on organizers and visiting teams will also gain access to the improved facilities.

On his part, FIFA Deputy Chief Member Associations officer, Gelson Fernandes, observed, “The main objective of the Forward Program is to ensure top-quality infrastructures that drive football development worldwide. The NFF’s transformation of its Technical Centre is a perfect example—upgrading pitches, building modern accommodations, and creating a true home for national teams. This project is a brilliant one for Nigerian football.

“We’re proud to support and to work alongside the NFF, not only with funding but also by sharing expertise to make this project a reality. Nigeria lives and breathes football, and FIFA is committed to helping the game grow as much as we can,” added Fernandes, who doubles as FIFA Regional Director for Africa.

The FIFA Forward is the largest and biggest sports development programme in the world. It was created in 2016 to redistribute FIFA’s revenues equally among the 211 MAs.

The five main areas where funds are used include Infrastructure, Capacity building, Competitions, National teams and subventions as well as specific projects depending on the needs of the respective MA.

In line with its strategy to make football truly global, by the end of 2026, FIFA will have invested a record-breaking figure of USD 5 billion in football.

Government needs to intentionally support indigenous businesses — Professor Bokpin

0

By Morkporkpor Anku

Accra, March 18, GNA – Professor Godfred A. Bokpin, an Economist and Professor of Finance, says no economy can grow sustainably in a transformative manner without being intentional about indigenous businesses.

He called on the President to be intentional in supporting the various sectors and in the next four years, the government could point to these assisted businesses.

Prof Bokpin was speaking at the 2025 National Budget Review as part of the Ghana National Chamber Of Commerce And Industry (GNCCI) National Dialogue Series in Accra on Tuesday.

The GNCCI, in partnership with Absa Bank Ghana Limited, organised the Budget Review on the theme: “2025 National Budget Discourse: Implications for the Private Sector.”

The event served as a pivotal platform for dialogue, advocacy, and the exchange of ideas that will help chart a course for the future of businesses in Ghana.

He said these businesses could be picked from micro to medium, medium to large and be deliberate about the type of support to enable them to contribute to the development of the economy.

“From banking, from telecom, from mining, we must be intentional about increasing local content,” he added.

He said every country was looking at how they could create opportunities for indigenous businesses and that was the only way out.

Prof Bokpin said what the country had been doing over the years was to use politics and power to victimise indigenous businesses because of their political affiliations.

He said the government needed to come out with a structured instrument that allowed private capital to help them deliver on critical infrastructure.

He said when it comes to critical economic infrastructure, it should be able to pay for itself and “we should be looking at public-private partnership.”

The Economist said the country had a huge infrastructure deficit and needed a legislative framework, and an enabling environment that allowed private capital to feel comfortable to partner the public sector to deliver critical infrastructure.

He said the International Monetary Fund Programme needed to be renegotiated, because its design, structure,  benchmark, indicative targets, and the growth trajectory,  would be insufficient to lift millions of Ghanaians out of poverty.

He said looking at the new mandate, the government’s manifesto, and all of that, it was going to be challenging

situating that within the IMF-supported programme without disruptions.

“The most important thing is that because over the years we have not been able to maintain macroeconomic stability for long, so the programme will deliver some relative macroeconomic stability,” he added.

Mr Mark Badu Aboagye, CEO of GNCCI, said the Chamber had the responsibility to break down and simplify the budget for their members to enable them to take advantage of the opportunities available.

“I see another opportunity within the agriculture sector where the government is expected to pump in about 1.5 billion,” he said.

He said as a Chamber they would be holding the hands of their members to strategically align and leverage these opportunities.

The CEO said there were several sectors within the Chamber and once they were able to do that, “we will bring them on board and let them know that for this particular sector, these are these opportunities available.”

He said the Chamber would monitor keenly the implementation of the budget and engage government on any deviations from the target to bring them back on track.

Ghana Atomic Energy Commission warns public against encroachment on nuclear facility land

0

GEAC warned that these encroachments pose serious safety and security risks GEAC warned that these encroachments pose serious safety and security risks

The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) has warned the public against purchasing or encroaching on its land near the Kwabenya nuclear facility.

In a press statement issued on March 18, 2025, and signed by its Director of Commercialisation and Communication, Anthony Nana Boateng, GAEC revealed that unknown individuals have illegally broken barricades and begun grading vast portions of its land, which has been earmarked for critical nuclear science projects.

“The land in question, located along the ‘Bohye’ stretch of GAEC property, is government-owned and has been earmarked to construct an Electron Beam Irradiation Facility.

“This facility will support sustainable agriculture and enhance national food security by preserving food, reducing post-harvest losses, and controlling contamination in consumer products. Additionally, it will be used for the sterilization of single-use medical devices, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and other essential products,” the statement read.

GAEC expressed deep concern over the encroachments, which are now dangerously close to the National Nuclear Waste Management Centre.

“This centre houses hazardous radioactive waste, which is managed in strict compliance with the laws of Ghana and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regulations,” the statement added.

The Commission warned that these illegal activities pose serious safety and security risks to both the facility and surrounding communities.

“The safety of residents in the immediate catchment area is under serious threat if this security installation remains unprotected,” the statement read.

GAEC also highlighted Ghana’s international obligations to protect its nuclear assets, noting that the country currently chairs the IAEA Board of Governors.

“Ghana currently holds the prestigious position of Chair of the Board of Governors of the IAEA, the United Nations agency responsible for promoting the peaceful use of nuclear technology worldwide.

“If the land encroachment issue is not addressed swiftly, it could negatively impact Ghana’s international reputation and future opportunities. Ghana’s positive reputation and good safety record in operating a research reactor for over 30 years could be eroded,” the statement read.

The Commission urged the public to refrain from acquiring land from unauthorised sellers and called on relevant authorities to take immediate action to halt further encroachments.

GAEC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe research environment and ensuring the peaceful use of nuclear technology for Ghana’s progress.

Lionel Messi dropped from Argentina’s squad for World Cup qualifiers

0

Lionel Messi is the captain of Argentina Lionel Messi is the captain of Argentina

Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, has been left out of the national squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Messi, who lifted the trophy in 2022, has not been included by coach Lionel Scaloni for the matches against Uruguay and Brazil.

This decision comes after Inter Miami announced that their talisman has a “low-grade” adductor injury.

According to a statement by the club, the 37-year-old experienced discomfort during his team’s 2-1 Major League Soccer win over Atlanta on Sunday, March 16, 2025.

Messi, who scored the equaliser in that game, had previously been rested for three Miami matches before coming off the bench to score in last week’s CONCACAF Champions Cup victory against Jamaican side Cavalier.

“Messi underwent an MRI scan this morning to assess the extent of the discomfort in his adductor region, which he experienced during last night’s match against Atlanta United. The examination’s findings confirmed the presence of a low-grade injury in the adductor muscle. His clinical progress and response to treatment will determine his availability for competition,” read a club statement.

Messi, Argentina’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player with 112 goals in 191 appearances, expressed his disappointment at missing the games.

“I’m sad to miss these important games against Uruguay and Brazil. I really wanted to play, but a small injury means I need to rest for a bit, so I can’t be there. I’ll be supporting and cheering from here like any other fan. Let’s go, Argentina,” he said.

Scaloni’s side, who lead the South American standings by five points, will travel to second-placed Uruguay on Friday, March 21, 2025, before hosting fifth-placed Brazil on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.

Messi is not the only prominent absentee for the two matches. Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Montiel, and Giovani Lo Celso have also been ruled out due to injuries.

AG Drops Barker Vormawor Treason Felony Charges

0

Oliver Barker-Vormawor

The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has dropped treason felony charges against activist and Democracy Hub convener, Oliver Barker-Vormawor.

The charges stemmed from statements he made in 2022, which authorities deemed as inciting a coup against the government.

Mr. Barker-Vormawor was arrested and charged after he allegedly stated on social media that he would lead a Coup if the government approved the controversial E-Levy.

The comments led to his detention and prosecution on treason felony charges, a case that sparked widespread public debate, condemnation from civil society groups, and concerns over free speech in Ghana.

In January 2025, Dr. Dominic Ayine announced plans to review the treason felony charge against activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor, suggesting the charge could be dropped.

The decision by the Attorney General to discontinue Mr Barker-Vormawor’s trial, adds to a growing list of high-profile cases in which the new Attorney General has filed nolle prosequi since assuming office.

Ken Agyapong [L] has been ordered to pay $18 million to Anas Aremeyaw Anas Ken Agyapong [L] has been ordered to pay $18 million to Anas Aremeyaw Anas

An Essex County jury has awarded investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas $18 million in his defamation suit against former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong.

This update was shared on the Facebook page of renowned legal scholar and political analyst, Professor Kwaku Azar.

He wrote, “An Essex County jury awards $18M in his defamation suit against Kennedy Agyapong, who has requested a remittitur.”

It will be recalled that in January 2023, an Accra High Court presided over by Justice Eric Baah dismissed Anas’ defamation suit against Kennedy Agyapong.

The court ruled that although the words spoken against Anas were factual and capable of being defamatory, he could not prove his case.

Anas had prayed the High Court to award aggravated damages to the tune of GH¢25 million, arising from defamatory materials published by the MP.

The MP had published materials in an attempt to discredit the investigative journalist, who had released a report on corruption.

Unhappy with the MP’s actions, Anas, through his lawyer, sued Kennedy Agyapong for general damages for defamation based on the defendant’s publications.

On May 29, 2018, during a live program in Twi on Adom TV, Kennedy Agyapong categorically stated that Anas was a blackmailer, corrupt, an extortionist, and evil.

We will provide textbooks, not past questions

Member of Parliament for Bolgantanga Central, Isaac Adongo Member of Parliament for Bolgantanga Central, Isaac Adongo

The Member of Parliament for Bolgantanga Central, Isaac Adongo, has defended the government’s decision to uncap the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) in the 2025 Budget and Economic Policy.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, March 16, 2025, he argued that the move would enhance the administration of the education sector by facilitating infrastructure expansion.

He lambasted the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government for failing to provide adequate textbooks to students in senior high schools.

“We were in this country when the NPP, instead of providing textbooks, will go and buy past questions for our children. The minister was giving our children past questions.

“We will provide enough textbooks and not past questions, and you (NPP) should be praising us for that, you capped the GETFUND, today you’re asking the minister how much he will make from the uncapping. You’re not even ashamed, you were rather centralising GETFUND money and sending it to the government to construct a hole called National Cathedral,” he noted.

During the presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy in Parliament on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, the finance minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson announced that the government is uncapping the GETFund to ensure sustainable funding for free secondary education.

“Mr. Speaker, the overarching concern about free secondary education has been its quality and the absence of a dedicated source of funding. President John Mahama has resolved the funding challenge by uncapping the GETFund. This makes available dedicated funds for the full financing of free secondary education and free tertiary education for Persons with Disability (PWDs),” he stated.

The Communications Director for the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has acknowledged that players arriving late at national team camps is not unusual, emphasising that such situations are common in football.

This follows an outcry from some Ghanaians who witnessed the Black Stars’ first training session at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, March 17, 2025, as the team prepared for two crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, scheduled for March 21 and 24, respectively.

Out of the 23 players called up by head coach, Otto Addo, only nine players were present, causing concern among fans who had expected full attendance given the importance of the games.

Among the players in attendance were goalkeepers Benjamin Asare (Accra Hearts of Oak), Lawrence Ati-Zigi (St Gallen), and Joseph Wollacott (Crawley Town). The training session also featured defenders Kamaradini Mamoud (Medeama SC), Mohammed Salisu (AS Monaco), Gideon Mensah (Auxerre), and Razak Simpson (Nations FC).

Premier League players Kamaldeen Sulemana (Southampton FC) and Antoine Semenyo (AFC Bournemouth) also participated.

Nonetheless, during an interview with Sporty FM, Twum dismissed the fans’ criticisms, explaining that late arrivals are a common occurrence due to the leagues in which the majority of the players compete.

“It’s very common, especially when 90% of your players play abroad,” he said.

Meanwhile, most of the players are expected to join the team on March 18, 2025, as preparations for the games continue.

“Dampare sacked, and in just 3 days, a suspect has been arrested in the Ahmed Suale..”

0

According to a report from GhanaWeb, Henry Osei Akoto, a prominent figure in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has voiced his astonishment over the recent arrest of a suspect linked to the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

He noted the timing of the arrest, which occurred shortly after the dismissal of former Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

Osei Akoto questioned Dampare’s effectiveness during his time in office, raising concerns about the lack of progress in the investigation into Suale’s murder, which took place seven years ago.

The politician expressed curiosity about whether the recent developments were merely coincidental, emphasizing the swift action taken by the police following the leadership change.

“Dampare sacked, and in just 3 days, a suspect has been arrested in the Ahmed Suale murder case. What was Dampare doing for 3 and a half years?” he questioned.

He remarked on social media that the timing of the arrest seemed significant, highlighting the contrast with the previous years of inaction.

In addition to his comments, it was reported that the suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Akwasi Amakye, allegedly shared Suale’s photographs with a Ghanaian politician before the murder.

A source from the Criminal Investigation Department indicated that a senior officer may be attempting to interfere with the investigation, advocating for the suspect to be released on bail instead of being arraigned in court.

This situation has reportedly caused tension within the police force, as investigators are determined to withstand any external pressure.

Amakye, a former associate of Suale at Tiger Eye Private Investigations, was arrested on March 17, 2025, after returning to Ghana from the UK, where he had fled following the murder. He was apprehended at a salon in Amasaman-Adease.

Ken Agyapong will contest NPP flagbearer race for 2028 elections – Brother confirms

0

Kennedy Agyapong, a key figure in Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former presidential aspirant, is set to contest the party’s flagbearer race ahead of the 2028 general elections.

His decision was confirmed by his brother, Ralph Agyapong, during an interview with Kings Jersey TV in the United States on March 15, 2025.

Ralph noted that shifting internal dynamics within the NPP now favor Kennedy Agyapong’s candidacy, positioning him strategically for the upcoming primaries.

“I can tell you on authority that he will contest the presidency or the NPP primaries, hopefully, next year, because we might have an early congress. He will be on the ballot paper,” Ralph Agyapong stated.

Kennedy Agyapong previously contested in the NPP’s 2024 presidential primaries, finishing second in the Super Delegates Conference with 14.30% of the vote, behind former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who secured 61.47%. Despite falling short, his strong performance demonstrated significant support within the party.

According to Ralph Agyapong, the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections has prompted many party members to reconsider their support for Dr. Bawumia, further strengthening his brother’s chances in the 2028 primaries.

“As I speak, a lot of people have made a U-turn,” he remarked, indicating growing backing for Kennedy Agyapong ahead of the next internal contest.

Reflecting on the 2024 primaries, Ralph described his brother’s campaign as an uphill battle against both internal and external party forces. He also hinted at the possibility of an early congress to select the NPP’s flagbearer, potentially accelerating Kennedy Agyapong’s return to the presidential race.

Criticizing the NPP’s 2024 election strategy, Ralph Agyapong attributed the party’s loss to ineffective campaign tactics and stressed the need for fresh leadership to reposition the party for 2028.

“The strategy that was used did not help the party to win,” he stated, suggesting that Kennedy Agyapong represents the strong, relatable candidate needed to lead the NPP forward.

With the party gearing up for a competitive primary, Kennedy Agyapong’s early declaration is likely to shape the contest as NPP members and supporters closely watch the unfolding dynamics.

Encroachers threaten security of nuclear installation and public safety, GAEC Warns

0

Accra, March 18, GNA – The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) has raised the alarm over increasing encroachment on its lands, warning that the activity poses a serious threat to the security of its installations and public safety.

In a statement signed by Mr. Anthony Nana Boateng, Director of the Commercialisation and Communication Directorate, and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), GAEC cautioned that the safety of residents in the immediate vicinity was at risk.

“The Commission is increasingly confronted with a surge in encroachments, with activities now dangerously close to the National Nuclear Waste Management Centre.

“This centre houses hazardous radioactive waste, managed in strict compliance with Ghanaian laws and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regulations,” the statement warned.

The GAEC reported that unknown individuals had illegally breached barricades, securing portions of the land behind the Bohye Police Base Workshop and Ga-East Hospital.

These individuals had begun grading large areas designated for nuclear facility expansion.

According to GAEC, the planned facility would support sustainable agriculture and enhance national food security by preserving food, reducing post-harvest losses, and controlling contamination in consumer products.

Additionally, it would be used for sterilising single-use medical devices, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and other essential products.

The GAEC noted, preventing encroachment was critical to maintaining a safe research environment and ensuring the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology for national development.

It also highlighted Ghana’s obligations to protect its nuclear assets, as required under international legal frameworks to which the country is a signatory.

The Commission added, Ghana currently holds the prestigious position of Chair of the Board of Governors of the IAEA, the United Nations agency responsible for promoting the peaceful use of nuclear technology worldwide.

“If the issue of land encroachment is not addressed swiftly, it could harm Ghana’s international reputation and future opportunities.

“Ghana’s positive track record in safely operating a research reactor for over 30 years could be undermined,” GAEC warned.

The GAEC also advised the public against purchasing any portion of its land from anyone.

Highlighting past economic failures necessary for accountability – Issah Atta

0

The Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu, Issah Atta, has defended the government’s decision to highlight the economic challenges inherited from the previous administration, arguing that it is necessary for accountability and to prevent future fiscal mismanagement.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, he addressed criticisms from the Minority, who have urged the government to focus on solutions rather than dwelling on past economic difficulties in the 2025 budget.

He stressed that assessing Ghana’s current economic situation requires an understanding of the 2024 macroeconomic indicators, making it essential to discuss the previous administration’s economic performance.

Atta further warned that failing to acknowledge past mismanagement could set a dangerous precedent, allowing future governments to act irresponsibly without consequences.

“It is important to lament on some of these issues because if we don’t, you give impudence to a future government to recklessly mismanage the country and expect the succeeding government to shoulder it, irrespective of the bad governance they impose on us,” he stated.

Federal judge halts USAID shutdown

0

A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration from taking any further steps to shut down the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

In a ruling Tuesday, Judge Theodore Chuang said the efforts, led by Trump ally Elon Musk’s Department for Government Efficiency (Doge), likely violated the US Constitution “in multiple ways”.

Chuang ordered Doge to restore access to USAID’s computer and payment systems for employees, including those who were placed on leave.

The judge also ruled that the termination of USAID employees should stop, but did not order the reinstating of employees previously placed on leave.

The ruling came in a case brought on behalf of 26 unnamed USAID employees who allege in court filings that Musk is following “a predictable and reckless slash-and-burn pattern” in dismantling US government departments.

In a complaint filed on 13 February, lawyers for the employees argued that Musk’s power is illegitimate and asked for Doge’s activities to be halted and reversed.

The ruling is the latest legal setback for the Trump administration. On Monday, another federal judge ordered a halt to the deportation of alleged Venezuelan gang members.

The judge in that case questioned Department of Justice lawyers about why his order, issued when several deportation flights were in the air, was not immediately implemented and followed.

President Trump called for the impeachment of the judge in that case, which prompted a rare rebuke from the chief justice of the US Supreme Court.

Anas Aremeyaw awarded $18 million in defamation suit against Kennedy Agyapong

E-Levy: “I was torn between my church and my political party”

0

According to a report from GhanaWeb, former Dome Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has expressed that she stands by her choice to abstain from voting on the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) in Parliament in 2022.

In a recent interview on Asempa FM, she explained that her decision was driven by the potential financial strain the levy would place on everyday Ghanaians who are already facing difficulties.

Safo mentioned that she found herself in a dilemma between her loyalty to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the needs of her constituents.

Several members of the NPP opposed the E-Levy due to the burden it would create for those struggling to make a living.

This situation deeply affected her, prompting discussions with her father and reflecting on her commitments to both her church and political party.

In her constituency, many church members were against the levy, leading her to make a definitive choice to abstain from the vote.

“Some NPP members kicked against the E-Levy because of the hardship it would impose on the ordinary Ghanaians who are struggling to make ends meet. It did not sit well with me, I had discussions with my father, and I was torn between my church and my political party,” she stated.

She expressed hope for a future in which MPs will demonstrate the courage to oppose government policies when necessary.

The E-Levy was ultimately approved in Parliament, following a walkout by the Minority on March 29, 2022.

Additionally, the current government under John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to abolish the levy, with the removal set to take place at the end of March 2025.

Report drivers charging unapproved fares to Police – GPRTU

0

The Industrial Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Abass Imoro, has urged commuters to report any driver demanding unauthorized transport fare increases to the nearest police station.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Tuesday, March 18, he emphasized that only the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have the authority to negotiate and announce transport fare adjustments.

“Do not pay any new fare to the drivers when they demand for it and report to the immediate police station. We have laws in the country. There is no law which says any transport operator can come up with it own transport fares. If we allow that, then it means we will be cheating the public.”

His remarks come in response to the Alliance of Drivers Ghana’s announcement of a 20% increase in transport fares, citing rising fuel prices, escalating engine oil costs, and the increasing prices of vehicle spare parts.

However, in a statement released earlier today, March 18, the Road Transport Operators urged the public to disregard any transport fare adjustments not issued by the GPRTU or GRTCC.

According to the operators, these two bodies are the only mandated institutions responsible for determining and publicizing official transport fares in the country.
