Bank of Ghana Completes Crypto Regulation Bill, Parliament Review Next

0

Bank Of Ghana
Bank of Ghana (BoG)

Ghana’s central bank has completed drafting legislation to regulate cryptocurrency and digital asset providers, setting the stage for what could become one of West Africa’s most comprehensive frameworks governing the rapidly evolving sector.

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) announced today that its Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASP) Bill has finished the drafting phase and is now progressing through processes leading to parliamentary consideration. The development marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s efforts to bring structure and oversight to a digital finance sector that has operated largely without formal regulation.

The central bank developed the legislation in collaboration with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC), ensuring the framework addresses both market integrity and anti-money laundering concerns. According to BoG, the draft bill has undergone extensive review by industry groups, relevant state institutions, and international development partners before advancing to its current stage.

What makes this development particularly noteworthy is the comprehensive groundwork BoG conducted before finalizing the legislation. In July 2025, the regulator conducted a mandatory registration exercise for all virtual asset service providers operating in Ghana, including cryptocurrency exchanges, wallet operators, and custodians. That exercise provided updated baseline data on virtual asset activities in Ghana, offering valuable insights that shaped the final regulatory framework.

Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, who became BoG Governor in February 2025, had previously indicated at a Monetary Policy Committee press conference that the draft bill was at cabinet level. He mentioned plans to sensitize the Attorney-General’s department on the bill’s provisions—a crucial step before parliamentary submission.

The legislation arrives as Ghana positions itself within the global movement toward regulated digital asset markets. Countries worldwide are grappling with how to harness cryptocurrency’s potential while protecting consumers and preventing illicit financial flows. Ghana’s approach appears to balance innovation encouragement with prudent oversight.

BoG has outlined a structured roadmap for implementing the framework once parliament passes it into law. Immediate priorities include continued consultations with the executive branch, legislature, and other stakeholders on the draft bill. The bank also plans to launch a dedicated online portal serving as a central information and compliance support hub for virtual asset service providers.

Nationwide awareness and engagement activities with industry players and the public are scheduled, along with preparatory measures to ensure smooth rollout once the VASP Act takes effect. This phased approach suggests BoG recognizes that effective regulation requires not just legislation, but also education and infrastructure.

For Ghana’s cryptocurrency sector, the bill represents both opportunity and challenge. Formal regulation could attract institutional investors who’ve avoided the space due to regulatory uncertainty. It might also facilitate partnerships between traditional financial institutions and digital asset platforms, potentially expanding access to cryptocurrency services.

However, compliance requirements will likely increase operational costs for virtual asset service providers. Smaller operators may struggle to meet licensing standards, potentially consolidating the market around larger, better-capitalized players. The registration exercise BoG conducted in July probably gave regulators insight into which operators are positioned to meet forthcoming standards.

The central bank’s statement emphasized its commitment to “fostering a safe, transparent, and innovative virtual asset ecosystem that protects users, encourages responsible innovation, and safeguards the integrity of the financial system.” That language suggests regulators are attempting to avoid stifling innovation while establishing necessary guardrails.

International context matters here. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF), which sets global standards for combating money laundering and terrorist financing, requires member states to regulate virtual asset service providers. Ghana’s move aligns with international best practices and could enhance its standing in global financial markets.

The bill’s progression through parliament will be worth watching. Legislators will need to balance competing interests: consumer protection advocates wanting strong oversight, industry players seeking operational flexibility, and government officials concerned about both innovation and financial stability.

Questions remain about specific provisions in the draft legislation. Will it require virtual asset service providers to maintain minimum capital reserves? How will it handle cross-border transactions? What enforcement mechanisms will BoG employ? These details will become clearer as parliament begins its review process.

For now, virtual asset service providers operating in Ghana should prepare for a regulated future. The mandatory registration exercise was likely just the beginning. Once the VASP Act passes, operators will need to meet licensing requirements, implement compliance systems, and adapt business models to regulatory standards.

BoG’s dedicated online portal, when launched, should provide clarity on compliance expectations. Industry players would be wise to engage with that platform early and participate in awareness activities the central bank plans to conduct.

The cryptocurrency sector has matured considerably since Bitcoin’s emergence over a decade ago. What began as an experimental technology has evolved into a significant financial ecosystem. Ghana’s move toward formal regulation acknowledges that reality while attempting to shape how digital assets integrate into the country’s financial system.

Whether parliament will pass the bill in its current form remains uncertain. Legislative processes can be unpredictable, with amendments possible as different stakeholders weigh in. But BoG’s completion of the draft represents substantial progress toward bringing regulatory clarity to Ghana’s virtual asset sector.

For international observers, Ghana’s approach may offer lessons in balancing innovation with oversight in emerging markets. The country’s experience could inform regulatory strategies across Africa as the continent grapples with cryptocurrency’s rapid adoption.

How can a regional chairman claim a report exists when there is none?– Justin Kodua fires Abronye DC

0

According to a report by GhanaWeb, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has dismissed claims made by the Bono Regional Chairman of the party, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, regarding an alleged disciplinary report on Kennedy Agyapong.

In an interview on Net2 TV, Kodua Frimpong denied suggestions that he withheld a report from the party’s disciplinary committee recommending the removal of Agyapong, a flagbearer aspirant.

He explained that when Agyapong issued his controversial remarks in 2023, he was referred to the disciplinary body, which cautioned him against making such statements in the future.

According to Kodua Frimpong, there was never a recommendation for Agyapong’s expulsion.

He criticized Abronye for spreading misinformation, stressing that such statements from a regional chairman amounted to misconduct.

“How can a regional chairman sit down and say that the disciplinary committee has brought a report that says that a party leader should be sacked, while there is no such report? And you would also mention the name of the General Secretary, saying that I’m the one who is preventing the report from coming out,” he said.

Kodua Frimpong described the allegation as a personal attack, noting that his name was wrongly linked to claims that he had suppressed the report.

Abronye DC had insisted that the 2023 disciplinary committee report identified Agyapong and others as engaging in conduct detrimental to the party.

He alleged that the document recommended Agyapong’s expulsion and accused the NPP General Secretary of shielding him by failing to present the report to the national leadership.

The claims have sparked internal tension, with Kodua Frimpong calling for disciplinary action against Abronye over what he views as damaging and unfounded accusations.

Ken Agyapong Campaign raises concerns over voter registration for NPP Presidential Primary

0

The campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has formally expressed concerns over irregularities and logistical challenges in the ongoing registration of eligible voters ahead of the party’s upcoming presidential primary.

In a letter dated October 1, 2025, addressed to the NPP’s Presidential Election Committee, Charles Cromwell Nanabayin Onuawonto Bissue, Director of Operations for the Agyapong campaign, warned that several qualified party members risk being disenfranchised due to technical and administrative hurdles.

The concerns relate specifically to the registration process for former party officers and other qualified members who, per a resolution passed at the NPP’s Annual National Delegates Conference on July 19, are entitled to vote in the January 31, 2026, presidential primary.

The resolution mandated that all former regional, constituency, and national executives, former external branch executives, Members of Parliament, parliamentary candidates, ministers, deputy ministers, and MMDCEs be included in the voter register.

To facilitate this, the party provided an online registration platform and manual forms, with a deadline initially set for September 19. The deadline was later extended to September 30 to allow more time for registration, particularly for those who experienced technical issues.

However, according to the Agyapong campaign, many eligible members still struggled to register due to difficulties in securing endorsements from constituency chairmen and secretaries—an essential requirement for completing the process.

“These issues risk disenfranchising qualified members who are entitled to participate in the process,” the letter cautioned.

As a corrective measure, the Agyapong campaign is proposing that coordinators of all presidential aspirants at the constituency level meet with party constituency officers to jointly review and verify the registration data. The aim, according to the letter, is to reconcile discrepancies and ensure that a credible and inclusive voter list is compiled at the national level.

“We believe this measure will enhance the credibility of the party’s voter register and safeguard the rights of all eligible members, in line with the spirit of inclusivity resolved at the July 2025 Conference,” Bissue wrote.

The letter has been copied to the Acting National Chairman and the General Secretary of the NPP, reflecting the campaign’s call for urgent attention at the highest levels of party leadership.

The NPP presidential primary is expected to be a fiercely contested race, with Kennedy Agyapong, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and other high-profile figures vying for the party’s flagbearership ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The Ketu North District Police Command has launched investigations into the death of an eight-year-old girl, allegedly linked to assault by her father at Dzodze-Fiagbedu in the Volta Region.

Reports indicate that on September 28, 2025, at about 0730 hours, an informant alerted Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emmanuel Habada, the District Crime Officer, that Thomas Gbemu, father of the deceased, had allegedly beaten his daughter, Ivy Gbemu, a Class Two pupil of Dzodze Demonstration School, on September 26.

It said the child died the following day, September 27, at about 1500 hours.

Upon receipt of the information, ASP Habada led officers to the residence of the suspect but did not find him.

A family source told the Ghana News Agency that the deceased child had returned from school on September 25 complaining of illness, and that her father purchased medication from a chemical shop as first aid.

A search of the room, where the child reportedly died by the Police uncovered some medicines- Efpac Junior Oral Suspension Syrup, Antipa LadiqueTablets, and Wonderful No. 1 Ointment, which have been retained as evidence by Police.

The Police, together with a relative of the deceased, proceeded to the morgue at St. Anthony’s Hospital, where the body was identified.

Dr. Samuel Owusu, who examined the body, found marks of assault on both arms of the child. The body has since been preserved at the hospital morgue pending autopsy.

The Police said efforts were underway to trace and arrest the father, who is currently at large.

ASP Mr. Emmanuel Habada confirmed to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the matter was currently under active investigation.

Showcase Ghana as a beacon of democracy, innovation, and opportunity

0

President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghana’s newly sworn in Ambassadors and High Commissioners to become passionate advocates for the nation’s image abroad, urging them to promote Ghana as a beacon of democracy, innovation, and economic opportunity.

Speaking at a swearing-in ceremony in Accra on Wednesday, October 1, President Mahama outlined a clear diplomatic mandate for the envoys, emphasising that beyond negotiations, their primary responsibility is to manage global perceptions and protect Ghana’s reputation.

“Distinguished Ambassadors and High Commissioners, your foremost responsibility is to tell Ghana’s story with conviction and credibility,” he stated.

The President encouraged them to present Ghana to the international community as a stable democracy with a strong record of peaceful transitions, a prime destination for trade and investment, and a growing hub for technology and the creative economy.

“You must present Ghana as, one, a stable democracy with a proven record of peaceful transitions; two, a land of opportunity open for trade and investment; three, a hub for technology innovation and a creative economy; and four, a vibrant cultural nation and a good tourist destination,” Mahama outlined.

He added, “And finally, above all, a people determined to create jobs for our youth and restore dignity to our workforce.”

The President’s charge to the envoys comes at a time when Ghana’s international image has come under scrutiny, particularly regarding its recent arrangements with the United States to receive deported West African nationals.

Addressing the issue directly, President Mahama reassured the public that Ghana’s agreement with the U.S. on the deportees is strictly limited, carefully vetted, and fully aligned with ECOWAS protocols. He emphasised that national sovereignty and security remain paramount.

“I wish to assure my countrymen and women that our understanding with the U.S. does not undermine our sovereignty, security, or stability. Ghana will not, and I repeat, will not become a dumping ground for deportees, nor will we accept individuals with criminal backgrounds,” he asserted.

President Mahama further urged the diplomats to be proactive in providing accurate information on the matter whenever concerns arise.

“Diplomacy involves more than just negotiation. It also encompasses managing perceptions and safeguarding your nation’s reputation,” he noted.

Mahama petitioned to remove Justice Kulendi over alleged misconduct

0

A fresh petition has been submitted calling for the removal of Supreme Court Justice Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi over allegations of misconduct and conflict of interest in the high-profile ambulance procurement case involving Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

The petitioner accused Justice Kulendi of compromising judicial ethics by being involved in matters connected to the prosecution of his cousin, despite not directly adjudicating the case.

The complainant accused Justice Kulendi of improper interference in proceedings at the High Court in the ongoing ambulance scandal case, Republic v. Cassiel Ato Forson & 2 Others

“This conduct violates several provisions of the Code of Conduct for Judges and Magistrates and has erodedm public confidence in the judiciary’s intergrity, impartiality and independence, which are principles upon which the justice system is founded.”

The petitioner argued that the appearance of divided loyalty by a Supreme Court judge, particularly in a case involving his blood relative, threatens the legitimacy of the entire legal system.

The petitioner further attached several documents in support of his claims, including:

The ruling of the High Court, Accra, dated June 6, 2024, the cross-examination of Richard Jakpa by the Republic in Republic v. Cassiel Ato Forson & 2 Others, evidence of WhatsApp conversations between Richard Jakpa and the former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and the affidavit filed by the Republic in Republic v. Cassiel Ato Forson & 2 Others.

MTN Ghana Awards 500 Scholarships Worth Millions to Students and Teachers

Mtn Ghana Ceo Stephen Blewett Executives Dr Emmanuel Newman Dignitaries And Bright Scholarship Beneficiaries In Accra

Five hundred Ghanaian students and teachers received life-changing news today as MTN Ghana Foundation announced scholarship awards covering tuition, accommodation, and living expenses through its flagship Bright Scholarship Scheme.

The telecommunications giant selected 300 students and 200 teachers pursuing further studies from an impressive pool of 3,691 applicants across 45 public tertiary institutions nationwide. After rigorous evaluation, 1,200 candidates made it to the interview stage before the final 500 were chosen.

Each recipient walks away with comprehensive support that goes beyond just tuition fees. The package includes accommodation costs, semesterly stipends for living expenses, and a laptop to ensure beneficiaries can fully participate in today’s digital learning environment.

“The Bright Scholarship reflects our relentless commitment to education,” said Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Ghana, speaking at Tuesday’s awards ceremony in Accra. “You are the garden we are cultivating today, and we expect to reap a harvest of well-prepared students ready to achieve the best in the years ahead.”

Her remarks captured what many in the audience already felt—that this initiative represents far more than corporate charity. It’s about removing the financial barriers that prevent brilliant minds from reaching their potential.

MTN Ghana Chief Executive Officer Stephen Blewett reinforced this vision, pointing to the harsh realities many students face. “Financial difficulties, limited resources and uncertainty often stand in the way of their dreams,” he explained. “That is why MTN Ghana Foundation established the MTN Bright Scholarship Scheme, to remove these barriers and give brilliant students a fair chance to succeed.”

The program’s impact extends beyond individual beneficiaries. Dr. Emmanuel Newman, Director of Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education, praised the initiative as a model for corporate-government collaboration. Speaking on behalf of the Education Minister, he noted that the Foundation’s “deliberate investment in education, particularly its focus on empowering young people, is laudable.”

What makes this year’s announcement particularly significant is MTN’s expanded commitment to supporting teachers alongside students. The 200 teacher scholarships recognize that investing in educators creates multiplier effects throughout Ghana’s education system.

The Bright Scholarship didn’t start with MTN, though. It evolved from the Scancom Scholarship Scheme, which had already supported over 1,000 students before MTN relaunched it in 2018. Since that relaunch, another 720 students have benefited from the program.

But here’s where it gets really interesting: MTN Ghana Foundation isn’t slowing down. The organization has committed to scaling up dramatically, with plans to award 1,500 scholarships over the next three years. That’s triple the current year’s allocation, signaling the Foundation’s growing confidence in the program’s impact.

Tuesday’s ceremony drew an impressive roster of education stakeholders and government officials. Among the dignitaries were Hon. Frank Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Minister; Dr. Godwin Utuka, Director of Academic Affairs at Ghana Communication Technology University; and Dr. Elizer T. Ameyaw Buronyah, Director of Public Affairs at the University of Ghana.

Representatives from beneficiary institutions attended alongside MTN executives, staff members, and—perhaps most importantly—the families and friends who’ve supported these scholarship recipients throughout their academic journeys.

For the 500 new beneficiaries, today marks the beginning of educational opportunities they might have otherwise struggled to afford. With tertiary education costs continuing to rise, these scholarships provide more than financial relief; they offer peace of mind that allows students to focus entirely on their studies rather than worrying about next semester’s fees.

The Foundation’s commitment to both students and teachers reflects a sophisticated understanding of educational development. While student scholarships create immediate opportunities, teacher scholarships build long-term capacity within Ghana’s education system. Those teachers will return to classrooms across the country with enhanced qualifications, potentially impacting thousands of students throughout their careers.

MTN Ghana Foundation, established in November 2007, focuses its corporate social investment across three key areas: health, education, and economic empowerment. Since inception, the Foundation has undertaken 178 major projects nationwide, making it one of Ghana’s most active corporate citizenship programs.

As Ghana continues grappling with education affordability challenges, private sector initiatives like the Bright Scholarship become increasingly vital. They complement government efforts while demonstrating how corporate resources can drive social impact beyond profit margins.

For this year’s 500 recipients, the message is clear: their academic dreams now have the financial backing they need. What they do with that opportunity will be up to them.

The Boubou Taking Over Women’s Fashion in 2025

0

The boubou, a flowing, wide-sleeved robe, is one of West Africa’s most iconic garments. Rooted in centuries-old traditions, the boubou holds a revered place in fashion and cultural identity across countries like Senegal, Mali, Nigeria, and Guinea. Once worn primarily for ceremonial purposes, women’s boubou styles have beautifully evolved—bridging heritage with contemporary fashion.

A Garment with History and Grace

Traditionally crafted from rich fabrics like cotton, brocade, or handwoven cloth, the boubou was worn as a loose-fitting robe that symbolized dignity, modesty, and status. For women, the ensemble is often completed with a matching headwrap, such as a gele or moussor, enhancing the regal silhouette of the attire.

Today’s boubous still honor their origins, featuring elaborate embroidery along the neckline, sleeves, and hem. These intricate patterns are often hand-stitched, telling visual stories that reflect craftsmanship and cultural pride.

Modern Elegance: Contemporary Boubou Styles

As fashion evolves, so too does the boubou. Designers across Africa and the diaspora are reimagining this traditional attire with modern fabrics like lace, silk, chiffon, and oorganization without sacrificing its signature flow and grace.

Some of the most popular styles of women’s boubou today include:

1. Grand Boubou (Agbada or Kaftan Style)

The grand boubou remains a staple for weddings, religious ceremonies, and festive occasions. Known for its voluminous design and wide sleeves, it exudes elegance and authority.

2. Fitted Boubou

For a modern twist, the fitted boubou embraces the female silhouette. Tailored around the waist or hips, it may include strategic slits or ornamental cuts, offering a chic blend of tradition and sophistication.

3. Layered Boubou

Layered designs bring texture and movement to the classic robe. Mixing fabrics, colors, or overlays, this style is popular among women who want to make a bold fashion statement.

4. Embroidered Boubou

Nothing says elegance like a richly embroidered boubou. Whether adorned with gold, silver, or multicolored threads, these designs often feature geometric, floral, or symbolic motifs, perfect for formal and ceremonial wear.

More Than Fashion: A Cultural Symbol

The boubou is not just a piece of clothing, it is a cultural expression. It reflects pride, respect, and a deep connection to ancestral roots. Women wear it not only to look beautiful but to honor their identity and preserve tradition, even as they embrace global fashion trends.

From casual outings to religious gatherings and lavish celebrations, the boubou’s versatility and timeless charm ensure its place in every stylish woman’s wardrobe.

Final Thoughts

Boubou styles for women stand at the intersection of tradition and innovation. Whether in classic forms or reimagined with modern flair, the boubou continues to dazzle and inspire. With its rich cultural heritage and limitless design possibilities, the boubou remains a symbol of African beauty, strength, and grace, a garment that tells stories, celebrates history, and embraces the future.

Ghana committed to combating illegal maritime activities, says Fisheries Minister

0

Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Kobiaba Arthur has reaffirmed Ghana’s intensified efforts to tackle illegal activities plaguing its marine territories, with a renewed focus on cross-agency cooperation and regional collaboration.

Speaking to journalists at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), the Minister reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and marine resources.

“All the illegal activities going on in the oceans we as Ghana, as a sovereign nation are committed to working as best as possible to deal with the issues,” she said.

“Especially through the Fisheries Ministry, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Defence under which maritime security falls, and the Ministry of the Interior, which oversees the Marine Police.”

The Minister acknowledged the vastness of Ghana’s maritime domain and the complexity of managing transnational waters, particularly in regions like the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean.

She highlighted recent successes in maritime enforcement, referencing her experience aboard the French naval vessel Tonnerre, which intercepted illegal activities en route.

“It was an honour to be on the ship Tonnerre — amazing. And it’s worth noting that on their way, they even came across illegal activities on the ocean and dealt with it,” she said.

The Minister also lauded the current training programme at the Sirene Academy, noting the participation of Ghanaian personnel.

“I am happy to announce that there are three Ghanaians who are part of this training cohort one from the Ghana Navy, one from the Ghana Air Force, and the other from the Maritime Authority. Their capacities are being strengthened.”

She underscored the severe impact of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing on the country’s economy and national security.

“The activities of illegal fishing are affecting the country negatively it’s leading to fish stock depletion, reduced catches, and ultimately harming people’s livelihoods,” she explained.

She noted that Ghana’s artisanal fishing sector comprises some 14,000 canoes, each with a crew of at least ten.

“Each of those ten crew members has about ten dependents,” she said. “As fish stocks deplete, you are actually seeing these people affected socially and economically.”

To clamp down on illegal operations, she revealed that the Ministry has suspended the licences of four industrial fishing vessels for various infractions.

Additionally, individuals involved in unlawful practices are currently facing legal action.

“The Fisheries Enforcement Unit (FEU), led by the Navy, has been out there dealing with wrongdoings, and we are dealing with them as best as we can,” the Minister stated.

She reiterated Ghana’s dedication to maritime security and sustainable fisheries management, calling for ongoing cooperation both domestically and across regional borders.

Ghana won’t become a dumping ground for deportees

0

President John Dramani Mahama has firmly reassured Ghanaians that the country will not be used as a dumping ground for deportees, especially those with criminal records, under the government’s current understanding with the United States.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed Ambassadors and High Commissioners in Accra on Wednesday, October 1, President Mahama addressed rising public concerns over Ghana’s acceptance of deported individuals from the U.S., following recent disclosures by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the arrival of additional West African deportees.

“I wish to assure my countrymen and women that our understanding with the U.S. does not undermine our sovereignty, security, or stability,” the President said.

“Ghana will not, and I repeat, will not become a dumping ground for deportees, nor will we accept individuals with criminal backgrounds.”

His comments come after Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed on September 17 that Ghana would receive another 40 deportees from the United States in the coming days. The news followed criticism from the Minority in Parliament, who questioned the transparency and legal basis of the arrangement after the country earlier accepted 14 deportees without parliamentary approval.

The government has since clarified that the agreement is governed by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ghana and the U.S., which does not require ratification by Parliament.

The Foreign Affairs Minister described the arrangement as humanitarian, stating that Ghana was acting in solidarity with fellow West Africans who were being subjected to inhumane treatment abroad.

Reinforcing that position, President Mahama said the country’s agreement with the U.S. is “limited, carefully vetted, and aligned with our ECOWAS protocols,” and emphasised that all returnees are thoroughly screened before being accepted.

“It reflects Ghana’s Pan-African commitment to regional cooperation while safeguarding our dignity and sovereignty,” he added.

The President also urged Ghana’s diplomats to play a key role in managing both perception and national image on the international stage.

“Diplomacy involves more than just negotiation. It also encompasses managing perceptions and safeguarding your nation’s reputation,” he told the diplomats. “Distinguished Ambassadors and High Commissioners, your foremost responsibility is to tell Ghana’s story with conviction and credibility.”

Highlighting Ghana’s strengths, President Mahama called on the envoys to portray the country as “a stable democracy with a proven record of peaceful transitions,” a land of trade and innovation, and a place where “our people are determined to create jobs for our youth and restore dignity to our workforce.”

Petition filed against Supreme Court judge,

0

MR Daniel Marfo Ofori-Atta, a Ghanaian citizen, has petitioned the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to investigate and prosecute two persons, including Justice Yonny Kulendi of the Supreme Court, for alleged obstruction of justice.

The other person cited in the petition is Mr Richard Jakpa, Director of Operations at the National Security Council, who is alleged to be a cousin of Justice Kulendi.

The petition relates to the trial of the Republic vs Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and two others concerning the procurement of 200 ambulances between the Government of Ghana and Holy Sea Limited.

According to Mr Ofori-Atta, from the first day the accused were arraigned before the High Court on January 18, 2023, Mr Jakpa “deployed the highly influential Justice of the Supreme Court, Yonny Kulendi, to obstruct the course of justice” with the ultimate aim of either securing the discontinuance of his prosecution by the then Attorney-General, Mr Godfred Yeboah Dame, or obtaining an acquittal.

The petitioner contends that the alleged conduct of Justice Kulendi and Mr Jakpa amounts to interference with legal proceedings. He has, therefore, urged the CID to investigate the matter and initiate prosecutions if necessary.

“I respectfully request you to conduct an investigation into the conduct of Justice Yonny Kulendi and his cousin, Richard Jakpa, to unravel all acts of criminality disclosed by their conduct, and take such prosecutorial action as is consistent with law,” Mr Ofori-Atta stated.

He added that he was prepared to assist investigators with relevant documents, exhibits, and records of proceedings in the Republic vs Cassiel Ato Forson & 2 Others trial.

Mr Ofori-Atta further alleged that on January 18, 2023, after Mr Jakpa’s arraignment, he sought the help of his cousin, Justice Kulendi, to prevail upon the Attorney-General to facilitate his release although he had not met bail conditions.

The petitioner also alleged that Justice Kulendi personally went to the office of Mr Dame to make that request.

During the trial, Mr Jakpa is said to have admitted under cross-examination that he obtained Mr Dame’s telephone number from Justice Kulendi, after which he attempted to meet the Attorney-General and sent him numerous WhatsApp messages.

Moreover, Mr Ofori-Atta claimed that between their first contact and June 18, 2024, Mr Jakpa sent 68 WhatsApp messages to Mr Dame, who only responded twice.

When Mr Dame declined to meet Jakpa, Justice Kulendi allegedly lured him into at least four meetings at his residence, during which Jakpa would be invited secretly and efforts made to influence the case.

The petitioner maintains that these actions, as borne out by court records, amount to criminal obstruction of justice.

Mahama launches National Cyber Security Awareness Month 2025

0

By Iddi Yire, GNA

Accra, Oct. 01, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday launched the National Cyber Security Awareness Month 2025 on the theme: “Building a Safe, Informed and Accountable Digital Space”.

The month-long programme, is being spearheaded by the Cyber Security Authority in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, and the Ministry for the Interior.

It seeks to raise awareness among children, businesses, the public, and government, on the importance of protecting digital rights, combating misinformation and disinformation, and promoting the ethical and responsible use of technology.

President Mahama in his remarks at the launch in Accra said under the Reset Ghana Agenda, his administration had prioritised digital transformation as a key part of the national development policy, and cyber security was at the core of that transformation.

“When I took office in January this year, I promised the Ghanaian people that we’ll develop a modern, inclusive, and secure digital economy. That promise continues to guide my work today,” the President said.

He reiterated four flagship initiatives of the Government that were already in progress- One Million Coders Programme, Digital Jobs Initiative, FinTech Group Fund, and the 24-Hour Economy.

He said the One Million Coders Programme, which he launched in April of this year had pilot projects in Greater Accra, Ashanti, Bono, and Upper East Region equipping thousands of the nation’s youth with tools that would prepare them not just for jobs today, but jobs of the future.

The Digital Jobs Initiative the President explained was a public-private partnership aimed at creating sustainable employment opportunities through technology.

“We’re establishing regional digital centers for business process outsourcing and ICT parks to promote innovation in artificial intelligence, cyber security, and digital entrepreneurship,” he said.

With the FinTech Group Fund, the President said the Government had set aside $50 million to support indigenous startups and foster a vibrant digital finance ecosystem.

“We want Ghanaian innovators to develop solutions for Ghanaian challenges and also expand them across Africa,” he added.

The President said institutions were important, and that was why in accordance with the Cyber Security Act 2020, Act 1038, he inaugurated at the event the 18-Member the Joint Cyber Security Committee (JCC) of the Cyber Security Authority.

He said the purpose of the JCC was to ensure coherence, coordination, and proactive measures in national defense against cyber threats; saying “This is a vital step”

“Cyber security must not be fragmented. It demands unity of purpose, a clear strategy, and disciplined education. cyber crime ignores borders,” he said.

“A hacker in one country can breach systems halfway across the world within seconds. And that is why Ghana cannot act alone. We must collaborate with the rest of the world.”

President Mahama said Ghana was already signatories to the Malabo Convention and the Budapest Convention on Cyber Crime. These frameworks, he said, enhanced the nation’s ability to cooperate internationally and align their laws with global standards. “This landmark treaty equips us with new tools.”

He announced that this October, Ghana would take another historic step to ratify and sign the United Nations Convention on Cyber Crime.

President Mahama said this treaty equipped them with new tools to investigate attacks, prosecute cyber criminals, and protect critical information infrastructure.

Next NPP gov’t will complete Agenda 111

0

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged that an NPP government, if voted back into office, will ensure the completion of the Agenda 111 health infrastructure initiative launched under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The flagship programme aims to provide district hospitals in underserved areas, with each facility designed to accommodate 100 beds and include residential quarters for medical staff.

Dr. Bawumia noted that significant progress had been made on many of the hospitals by the end of 2024, but construction has since stalled under the current NDC administration.

“Many of the hospitals had reached advanced stages of construction by the close of 2024, but progress has stalled. The NPP remains committed to delivering Agenda 111 to expand access to quality healthcare across the country,” he said.

Speaking to constituency executives and former party officials in the Greater Accra Region on Wednesday, October 1, Dr. Bawumia reaffirmed that completing Agenda 111 will remain a priority for the NPP.

Former DRC president Joseph Kabila sentenced to death in absentia

0

A military court in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has sentenced former President Joseph Kabila to death in absentia.

Lieutenant General Joseph Mutombo Katalayi, who presided over the military tribunal, said on Tuesday that Kabila was convicted of various crimes, including treason, crimes against humanity, murder, sexual assault, torture and insurrection.

“In applying Article 7 of the Military Penal Code, it imposes a single sentence, namely the most severe one, which is the death penalty,” Katalayi said while delivering the verdict.

Kabila, who served as president from 2001 to 2019, had left the DRC in 2023, but recently visited Goma in the east of the country, an area controlled by the M23 rebel group.

The former president went on trial in absentia in July for his alleged support for the Rwanda-backed rebels, who seized large swaths of territory in the eastern DRC this year.

Rwanda has denied providing military support to the M23, but United Nations experts say its army played a “critical” role in the group’s offensive.

There was no immediate information about Kabila’s whereabouts after the military court’s verdict on Tuesday.

The ex-president did not attend the trial and was not represented by legal counsel. Neither he nor his representatives were immediately available for requests for comment from the Reuters news agency.

Kabila had previously slammed the case against him, calling the courts “an instrument of oppression”.

An appeal against the High Military Court’s verdict is still possible before the Court of Cassation, albeit only on grounds of a claim of procedural irregularities, not to review the merits of the case.

Observers say the court’s verdict aims to remove the possibility that Kabila could unite the opposition within the country, despite his exact whereabouts being unknown.

Still, many have questioned whether the decision could fuel further unrest.

Yinka Adegoke, Africa editor at the Semafor news outlet, told Al Jazeera that Kabila has been “a thorn in the side” of DRC President Felix Tshisekedi for some time.

The two men used to work together, Adegoke noted, but Kabila no longer served the Tshisekedi government’s interests as he “has his own power base [and] his own support”.

“The problem with this sentencing now is that it could make Kabila supporters feel that this [trial] is all politically-motivated,” Adegoke said.

The ruling came after the DRC Senate voted in May to repeal Kabila’s immunity from prosecution, a move the former president denounced at the time as dictatorial.

The country also lifted a moratorium on the death penalty last year, but no judicial executions have been carried out since.

Military prosecutor General Lucien Rene Likulia had demanded the death penalty for Kabila.

Likulia accused the ex-leader of plotting to overthrow Tshisekedi, while the other charges against him, including homicide, torture and rape, were linked to M23.

A peace agreement between the Congolese and Rwandan governments was signed in June in Washington, DC. A declaration of principle with the M23 “in favour of a permanent ceasefire” was also signed in Qatar in July.

But violence persists on the ground and NGOs have denounced abuses against civilians, including summary executions, gang rapes, and kidnappings.

A UN investigation in early September found all parties to the conflict could have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Proposed tariff increments to benefit consumers – utility providers court public support

0

By Ewoenam Kpodo, GNA

Ho, Oct. 01, GNA – Utility companies in Ghana have appealed for public support on their proposed tariff increase, saying that would allow them to generate more revenue for investment and service improvement.

The Volta River Authority (VRA), Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) respectively, justified their demands                                                                      for adjustments in the tariffs, citing rising operational costs and infrastructure maintenance needs.

At a public hearing on the Multi –Year Tariff Order for 2025-2029/2030 organised by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) Tuesday, in Ho, they presented to the participants their initiatives since the last tariff review in 2022, their challenges, planned initiatives and the benefits thereof for consumers.

The ECG, proposing a 225 per cent increase in its distribution service charge, described the current tariff as woefully inadequate, which could not represent the actual cost of electricity provision.

Mr Michael Okley, the General Manager for Financial Planning, ECG during a presentation said the power distributor in 2023, lost about 700 electricity poles (estimated at a cost of GH¢560,000.00) to bushfires in Volta Region alone, deemed to have been caused by activities of farmers, palm wine tappers, hunters and nomads.

He said ECG undertook projects including system automation, voltage improvement and commercial improvement works from 2022 and expected that the proposed new tariff would help it carry out other projects to ensure constant and reliable electricity supply to consumers.

Mr Michael Tawiah Klutse, the Chief Manager for Corporate Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation at GWCL, said the Company was seeking a 280 per cent increase in water tariff over increased operational costs, particularly for water treatment chemicals and infrastructure maintenance among others saying, not just water but “clean water is life.”

It said adjusting the current tariff of GH¢5.28 per 1,000 litres to GH¢20.00 per 1,000 litres would help them make the right investment to promote water production and distribution across the country.

The VRA, seeking approval to raise its Bulk Generation Charge from 45.0892 pesewas per kilowatt-hour to 71.8862 pesewas per kilowatt-hour (representing 59 per cent) explained that the current tariff was challenging its provision of reliable power and servicing its financial obligations.

It mentioned projects like the Sea Water Reverse Osmosis at Aboadze and the AMERI Relocation Phase 1 since the last tariff increment and noted it needed more revenue to implement other projects including construction of mini grids to cater for the power needs of island communities.

GRIDCo, seeking an increase in its transmission service from 5.6422 pesewas per kilowatt-hour to 12.9768 pesewas per kilowatt-hour (representing 130 percent), said the proposal was critical for the company’s survival and investment needs.

Participants during the forum expressed disappointment with the proposals saying, they were excessive and would worsen the economic conditions, especially for artisans and would only deepen the “struggles of the ordinary Ghanaian.”

One of them, Madam Philomena Mordey, a representative from Roman Catholic Church, Ho Diocese said the utility providers all the time used “service improvement” as a bait to increase their tariffs but ended up giving poor services.

Mr Moses Asaga, the Board Chairman, PURC refuted claims that the Commission had always been on the side of the utility companies, noting that PURC aimed to balance economic realities with social considerations to protect both consumers and service providers.

Nana Yaa Jantuah, the Chairperson of the Stakeholder Committee, PURC, said the public hearing at Ho, which was the third to be held, formed part of a nationwide process to review the proposals submitted by the utility companies, saying such increments presently remained as mere proposals.

‘It’s just a promotion’ – MultiChoice counters Sam George again over DStv packages

0

MultiChoice Ghana Limited, managers of DStv, has once again contradicted the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, regarding the prices of its packages.

Sam George had announced that DStv subscribers in Ghana would enjoy between 33% and 50% more value on their subscriptions starting Wednesday, October 1, 2025, following an agreement between the Ministry and MultiChoice Africa.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, September 29, 2025, he stated that MultiChoice Africa had committed to rolling out an unprecedented value offer in Ghana, providing subscribers with between 33% and 50% more value depending on the package they use.

“MultiChoice Africa has committed to an unprecedented increase in value offer only in Ghana, which will result in Ghanaian DStv subscribers getting more services for less. Depending on the DStv package or bouquet you use, subscribers will get between 33% to 50% more value,” he remarked.

MultiChoice shoots down Sam George’s claim of DStv price slash

Following the minister’s announcement, a statement attributed to MultiChoice, widely reported by several media outlets, contradicted Sam George’s claims about enhanced DStv packages.

According to posts circulating on social media, MultiChoice said the enhanced packages are part of a promotion scheduled to end in December 2025.

“New DStv package upgrades announced by Sam George are a promotion scheduled to end in December 2025… – MultiChoice Africa,” the company shared on Wednesday.

On September 5, 2025, MultiChoice had denied agreeing to a price reduction in DStv services after Sam George announced that a deal had been reached to that effect.

VRA to relocate Thermal Power Plant to Kumasi by December

0

The Volta River Authority (VRA) is expected to complete the relocation of the Thermal Power Plant, formerly known as the AMERI Power Plant, to Kumasi by December 2025.

Phase two of the project involves the movement of the four remaining plants from the Western Region to Awomaso, to help augment power supply in the Ashanti Region and the northern parts of the country.

Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority, Edward Ekow Obeng Kenzo, said the relocation of the remaining power plants to Kumasi will improve supply and stabilise the Volta.

This was made known during a visit to the Volta River Authority substation at Awomaso in the Ashanti Region, on Wednesday, October 1.

In a related development, Parliament’s Select Committee on Energy emphasised stepping up stakeholder engagement to safeguard powerlines belonging to the Ghana Grid Company Limited, which are continuously being threatened by illegal mining activities.

The Committee expressed concern about how illegal mining and encroachments on major gas pipelines are endangering Ghana’s power sector. It also pledged its commitment to engage relevant ministries and agencies to help address these challenges.

Deputy Ranking Member Collins Adomako Mensah called for concerted public efforts to prevent illegal miners and encroachers from getting close to powerlines and gas pipelines.

The Committee assured that it would engage the Finance Ministry on concerns raised by the VRA regarding tax exemptions on imported equipment.

Acting Chairperson of the Committee, Albert Nyakotey Tetteh, together with Deputy Ranking Member Collins Adomako Mensah, also stressed the need for more investments in the country’s energy sector despite the current stability in power supply.

FAQs an error – MultiChoice apologises to Ghanaians

0

MultiChoice Ghana, the operators of DStv, have issued a statement apologising to Ghanaians for a misleading FAQ published on their website, which was an error.

According to MultiChoice, it fully supports Sam George on the value upgrade.

In a tement issued on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, reads, “Following the recent joint press conference with the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, the National Communications Authority, MultiChoice Africa, and MultiChoice Ghana, we wish to clarify the FAQs published on our website, which created an erroneous impression of a contradiction regarding the DStv value offering, which is effective today, 1 October 2025.

60% of investment vehicles domiciled outside Africa; Ghana named viable destination

0

A new study has revealed that about 60% of African-focused investment vehicles are domiciled outside the continent.

The report, commissioned by the Mastercard Foundation in partnership with Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) and conducted by a team of experts from Momentus Global, Samawati Capital Partners and Stafford Law, found that this trend was a significant obstacle to the provision of capital to Medium and Small Scale Enterprises (MSMEs) in countries across the continent, particularly those owned by women and the youth.

The 190-page report, titled “Study on Africa as a Jurisdiction for Domiciliation of Investment Vehicles” identifies how the domiciliation of investment vehicles could boost economic growth across the continent.

The report covers 13 African investment destinations, including Ghana, Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa, Senegal and Morocco, assessing their viability for domiciliation and providing suggestions to ensure they are ready to capitalise on domiciliation opportunities for economic advancement.

Ghana, it noted, and other high-potential jurisdictions like Cape Verde, Uganda, and Rwanda had demonstrated a “proactive approach to building regulatory environments conducive to attracting foreign investment and have prioritised creating ecosystems that foster foreign and pan-African Investment Vehicles.”

The President and CEO of MEDA, Dr. Dorothy Nyambi said, “It is time to enhance Africa’s competitiveness and increase capital mobilisation through strategic investment vehicle domiciliation. Transforming the investment landscape for African-owned and women-led investment vehicles will strengthen MSMEs that generate dignified and sustainable jobs for women and youth across Africa.”

The report provided country-specific recommendations to boost domiciliation prospects and called for concerted and deliberate actions by various stakeholder groups and advocacy agents.

Among the measures recommended for implementation in Ghana were the promulgation of the Limited Partnership Law and Trust Law to expand the permissible legal structures for funds and provide alternatives for Fund managers and investors.

The report also pushed for the establishment of an Accra International Financial Centre framework to provide a dynamic and investor-friendly business environment and adaptable regulatory frameworks.

The Lead Counsel at Stafford Law, Maame Tutua Dadson, explained that domiciliation could help address youth unemployment by enabling MSMEs to procure enough capital to be able to offer sustainable jobs to young people across the continent.

“Africa’s youth face significant barriers to decent work. MSMEs are effective at producing inclusive jobs but have limited access to affordable finance. That is hindering African entrepreneurs from starting, growing and scaling high-potential enterprises,” she said.

The release of the full study is part of a three-year initiative, led by MEDA, to apply key learnings from the Mastercard Africa Growth Fund’s efforts to catalyze risk capital. Over the next year, the initiative will engage the growing African investment ecosystem in changing regulations and policies to support the expansion of domiciliation in Rwanda, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and West Africa Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) countries including Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire.

In parallel, the African Crowdfunding Association will work to change regulations around crowdfunding that further expand policy options for African IVs.

“Our collaborative team will be engaging directly with decision-makers to find ways to enhance their regulatory and policy environments to be more welcoming to African domiciles that strengthen the capacity of IVs to deploy more capital and expand access to funding for women-led enterprises,” said Diana Smallridge, CEO of Momentus Global and a contributor to the study.

The release of the study was part of a pan-African webinar co-hosted by the Collaborative for Fund Domiciliation in Africa, MEDA and the Africa Impact Investing Group, with network partners African Venture Capital Association (AVCA) and the African Venture Philanthropy Alliance (AVPA).

Ghana does not have a music industry – KiDi

0

Ghanaian Afrobeats and R&B artiste, KiDi, says the country does not have a proper music industry, citing the absence of structures to support the growth of musicians.

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz with Doreen Avio and Kwame Dadzie, the hitmaker lamented the lack of systems that should anchor the industry beyond the individual efforts of artistes.

In his view, although creatives are working hard, the absence of a structured system makes the sector unattractive to investors.

“Every musician in Ghana has to fend for themself and strive their way with individual resources due to the lack of a structure,” he said.

Explaining the kind of structures he referred to, KiDi pointed to poor royalty collection and weak industry support mechanisms.

He further argued that the struggling music space often turns around to criticise artistes unfairly, even though the ecosystem that should support them has failed to function as an industry.

DStv subscribers in Ghana will enjoy between 33% and 50% more value on their subscriptions play videoDStv subscribers in Ghana will enjoy between 33% and 50% more value on their subscriptions

The internet has been flooded with comments reacting to the recent announcement of an enhanced DStv packages to subscribers.

The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has announced that DStv subscribers in Ghana will enjoy between 33% and 50% more value on their subscriptions from Wednesday, October 1, 2025, following an agreement between the Ministry and MultiChoice Africa.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, September 29, 2025, he stated that MultiChoice Africa has committed to rolling out an unprecedented value offer in Ghana, providing subscribers between 33% and 50% more value depending on the package they use.

From Price Cuts to Value: Sam George shifts focus on DStv subscriptions

In a Vox Pop conducted by GhanaWeb TV on September 30, 2025, many customers expressed concerns about the value proposition, particularly regarding price adjustments.

“We love football and sports, so we’ll stick with DStv, but their prices are too high. DStv needs to address this issue, not just Sam George. You can’t charge less in other countries and more in Ghana. I’ve seen lower prices in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and other African nations. We are all on the same continent and watch the same content. Apart from sports, most people aren’t fond of DStv. For this new package, they need to reconsider the pricing,” a man who gave his name as Divine said.

“I’ve been using DStv for over two years, but not anymore. I switched to the Fire TV Stick. What they need to do is increase the availability of decoders, as most Ghanaians already have them at home, and decrease the subscription fees so that Ghanaians can actually afford to buy these packages. Otherwise, they stand to lose customers,” Owusu-Ansah added.

Truckload of suspected Indian Hemp arrives at Police Regional HQ with half replaced with sawdust

0

A Hyundai 5-ton truck with registration number ER 760-23, which was intercepted by a police patrol team carrying over 100 sacks of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, has been brought to the Eastern Regional Police Command in Koforidua with nearly half of its original load missing.

The truck, driven to the regional command on the instructions of the Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Twumasi Ankrah, by Service Driver Chief Inspector Daniel Addo, reportedly arrived partially full on Wednesday, October 1. Many of the sacks were found to have been replaced with sawdust.

According to sources, the Asesewa District Police Commander, Superintendent Francis Ackah, had earlier refused to release the vehicle to the regional operations commander, insisting on personally escorting it to Koforidua.

However, a critical assessment of the truck’s contents revealed a stark difference between the overloaded consignment intercepted on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, and what was eventually delivered to the Eastern Regional Command later in the evening.

Citi News sources at the regional headquarters confirmed that almost half of the suspected narcotics had been tampered with, raising serious concerns among officers.

Meanwhile, the two suspects arrested in connection with the case, identified as Sulley Abubakari and Sadat, were not present when the truck arrived in Koforidua.

Sources indicate that the pair allegedly escaped from custody after being taken to the Sekesua Police Station.

In a related development, three police officers who played a role in the interception were detained by the Asesewa District Police Commander, later handed over to the regional operations commander, and subsequently held for several hours at the KTU Police Station in Koforidua. They were released only after the intervention of the Deputy Minister of Interior. The officers have since been compelled to write official statements.

Citi News understands there is growing unease among personnel at the Eastern Regional Command, with many officers expressing dismay over what they describe as the unjust treatment of their colleagues.

Some argue that the officers involved should be commended for their bravery in intercepting the truck rather than facing disciplinary action.

Herbal remedies and dehydration putting kidneys at risk – Expert warns

0

A senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Rebecca K. Steele-Dadzie of the Department of Diabetes, has warned that unhealthy eating habits, including excessive consumption of processed and fatty foods, frequent eating out, and misuse of herbal medicines, are harming kidney function and driving a rise in chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity.

Speaking on the topic “To Eat or Not to Eat: Dietary Habits and the Courting of Kidney Diseases,” Dr Steele-Dadzie highlighted a growing trend of kidney-related illnesses, including acute kidney injury and kidney stones.

She linked these conditions to poor hydration, unsafe traditional practices, and even excessive Vitamin C intake.

Chronic kidney disease in Ghana: Treatment challenges and prevention tips

According to a report by graphic.com.gh on October 1, 2025, kidney health in Ghana is increasingly threatened by poor hydration, excessive protein intake, and high consumption of salt and sugar.

“Chronic kidney injury is a more sudden kind of loss of kidney function, and usually it’s due to an underlying cause,” she explained.

She stressed that dehydration is a key risk factor in tropical regions, where climate change exacerbates challenges in accessing clean drinking water.

Chronic kidney disease affects 10% globally, 13% in Ghana – Specialist

“In our part of the world, especially in the tropics, climate change makes things more challenging, even as basic as getting enough drinking water. But staying healthy starts with staying hydrated,” Dr Steele-Dadzie noted.

“The kidneys cannot handle concentrated blood if you are not drinking enough water. Eventually, this can lead to acute kidney injury. So, we need to take in sufficient water,” she advised.

Dr Steele-Dadzie urged Ghanaians to adopt healthier diets, reduce reliance on processed foods and herbal concoctions, and prioritise hydration to protect their kidneys and overall well-being.

GB News presenter Nana Akua slammed Sir Keir Starmer’s “ridiculous proposal” to roll out digital ID cards across the UK to tackle illegal working. Last week, the Prime Minister announced that people will not be able to work in the UK without a digital ID, sharing the plans that he hopes will make the country’s borders “more secure.” However, the new scheme has sparked a mixed response from Brits across the country, with several politicians speaking out on the decision.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has branded the scheme a “desperate gimmick,” and the Lib Dems share their fears that it will force people to turn over their private data. Now, the 54-year-old broadcaster has shared her thoughts on the controversial decision, and she certainly didn’t hold back on her evening show.

She began: “As of today, a poll estimated that if an election were called now, Reform UK would win over 300 seats. So instead of introducing ID cards, which aren’t going to work, why not try and follow what Nigel Farage is doing and find out why the electorate finds his plans so interesting and are prepared to vote for him more than you.

At this point, the presenter shared a clip of Nigel Farage slamming the scheme as he stood in front of a Reform UK poster. He fumed, “I do not see a single benefit to the government having a digital ID other than them controlling what we do.”

The cameras then panned back to Nana, who was quick to reiterate her point. She declared, “Sir Keir Starmer has really achieved the incredible.

“He has united Zarah Sultana, Ed Davey, Kemi Badenoch, and Nigel Farage against his ridiculous proposal of ID cards.” It didn’t take long before viewers flocked to X – formerly known as Twitter – to share their thoughts on the upcoming scheme online.

One user congratulated the broadcaster on her stance following her interview with Labour MP Suzy Stride. They wrote: “Watching your debate with Suzy Stride, I can’t believe how hard she’s trying to convince you and us about this digital ID [poop emoji]!

“I loved the way you challenged her and gave that cheeky laugh when she said many people are for it !! These Labour activists [two angry swearing emoji].”

Another pointed out: “What if you get your phone stolen like millions up and down the country, or like me, constantly losing them? What then if you’ve got everything stored on that app? And how would you get it back?”

A third fumed: “That’s because Starmer can’t deal with the real issues and wants the media time taken away over his own rumblings at Number 10.”

Mahama Pledges Support For Private Universities

President John Dramani Mahama has assured private universities of government’s readiness to consider measures that will improve their operations and contribution to higher education in Ghana.

This assurance was given when a delegation from the Christian Service University (CSU) in Kumasi, led by its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sam Afrane, paid a courtesy call on him at the Flagstaff House in Accra.

Prof. Afrane, speaking on behalf of the delegation, urged the government to extend the Stress-free Fee Programme for first-year students in private universities, arguing that the initiative should not only benefit students in public institutions.

He also appealed for scholarships to be made available to lecturers in private tertiary institutions to enable them pursue Doctoral programmes, thereby improving faculty capacity.

President Mahama, in his response, welcomed the delegation warmly and expressed appreciation for their support and prayers. He emphasised that private universities play a vital role in expanding access to higher education and deserve attention from the government.

To demonstrate his commitment, the President tasked the Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, who was present at the meeting, to study the issues raised and make recommendations.

The CSU delegation included the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Dr. Stephen Banahene; the Registrar, Mr. Andrews K. Doku; the Dean of the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences, Dr. Cynthia Akuoko; and the University Chaplain, Rev. Anthony Boateng Agyenim. Before their departure, they prayed for the President, his government, and the peace and prosperity of the nation.

Christian Service University, located in the Ashanti Region, is a leading private institution offering programmes in theology, business, health sciences, and applied sciences. Its call for support highlights broader challenges facing private universities across Ghana, particularly in the areas of funding, staffing, and student access.

Mahama promised to fight galamsey; he must ensure he delivers that promise – Odike

Odike

Founder and leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Akwasi Addai Odike, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to honor his campaign pledge to fight illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Odike stressed that the fight against galamsey formed part of the President’s manifesto commitments and must be treated as a binding social contract with Ghanaians.

He further urged the President to consider declaring a state of emergency in affected areas, noting that such a measure would help restrict illegal mining operations and protect the environment.

“It was in Mahama’s manifesto that he outlined his plans to address illegal mining, and he also spoke about it during his campaign. This forms the social contract between him and Ghanaians. He should follow through on his promises.

“As the leader of the nation, he sets an example for others to follow, so he needs to provide solutions for galamsey. Calling for a state of emergency could limit many of these activities because it would restrict freedom of movement. Everyone, including civil society organizations (CSOs), is calling for a state of emergency, so what is stopping the president?,” he said.

NLC orders transport ministry to agree payment plan for 12-month railway salary arrears

0

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the Ministry of Transport to immediately engage the Management and Workers’ Union of the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) to agree on a payment plan for 12 months of outstanding salaries, as well as subsequent payments.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 1, the Commission said: “The Ministry of Transport should engage Management and the Workers’ Union of Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) in order to come up with a payment plan for the 12 months outstanding salaries as well as payment of subsequent salaries.”

The directive follows a strike notice issued by the Railway Workers’ Union, effective September 30, 2025, over unpaid wages and growing concerns about job security.

The NLC noted that GRCL workers have not received salaries for a year, stressing that as the sole shareholder, the government must take responsibility for the company’s liabilities.

“If the GRCL cannot pay its workers, then it is the responsibility of the Government as the sole shareholder to assume that liability,” the Commission stated.

The Commission warned that failure to resolve the arrears could worsen the situation:

“If the outstanding salaries are not paid, the salary arrears would continue to accumulate, which would make things very difficult for the parties.”

It further highlighted that the lack of work has heightened fears of job insecurity among staff, urging all parties to also discuss the long-term sustainability of the company.

The NLC gave the Ministry and the workers’ union one week to report on the outcome of the engagements, adjourning the matter to Thursday, October 9, 2025, at 1:00 p.m.

‘Free promotion?’ – Social media drags Sam George over temporary DStv value increase

Social media is ablaze with criticism of Minister of Communications, Digital Technologies and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, after it emerged that the much-touted “value increases” for DStv subscribers may only last for a limited period.

On September 29, 2025, Sam George announced that Ghanaian DStv users would receive 33% to 50% more channel value in their existing packages following negotiations with MultiChoice. Many interpreted this as a permanent boost or instant price reduction.

But on October 1, 2025 MultiChoice Ghana Limited clarified that the upgrades are part of a three-month promotional campaign, dubbed “We’ve Got You,” which runs from October 1 to December 31, 2025.

‘Same waakye price, extra shito’ – Ghanaians react to new DStv prices

The revelation sparked backlash across X, Facebook, and other platforms, with many users accusing both the minister and DStv of misleading Ghanaians.

Some netizens said the announcement had raised expectations of lasting relief, only for it to be revealed as temporary.

Others went further, speculating that Sam George had been used as a vehicle to promote the campaign at no cost to MultiChoice Ghana.

“Some of you really think Sam George dey fight DStv for consumers. Open your eyes, this whole saga dey look like influencer promo pass real regulation.”

“Naah, I gotta give it to DSTV. I thought I’d seen top-tier finessing… but what they did to Sam George… that’s a discovery.”

Supporters of the minister’s intervention, however, pushed back, arguing that his efforts were clearly in the interest of consumers and that the trolling was unnecessary.

“What Hon. Sam George is fighting for us in regards to DSTV is to our benefit as citizens. I don’t see why some are bent on seeing him fail. DSTV is emboldened disrespectfully by our divisiveness,” one supporter posted.

Judges made to work without basic support – Justice Henry Kwofie

0

The President of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana (AMJG), His Lordship Justice Henry Kwofie, has expressed frustration over the persistent delays in the release of allowances and the inadequate provision of basic facilities needed for the smooth functioning of the judiciary.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Association’s annual conference on the theme “Leveraging Technology to Enhance Justice Delivery”, Justice Kwofie said judges and magistrates are often made to feel as though the resources allocated to them are undeserved.

“Facilities for the performance of functions of the judiciary are given to us as if we don’t deserve them. I am talking about allowances. Judges move around without cards. Medical allowances are not released. I don’t remember the last time I received mine. Even if they have been approved by Parliament, they are not released,” he lamented.

Justice Kwofie disclosed that for the past two to three quarters, he and many of his colleagues have not received their approved allowances, despite the critical nature of their work.

“Our work is such that we cannot do any other work. We need to make this public for the Attorney General to carry it to the appropriate quarters,” he added.

The AMJG President also highlighted the plight of lower bench judges, noting that many are forced to fund official duties from their own pockets due to the delays.

“A judge this morning explained that he used his own funds to travel 16km from Buipe to Dambai to hear cases,” Justice Kwofie recounted, describing the situation as unacceptable.

Tamale City, RTU renew rivalry on matchday two in Zone One – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

The Aliu Mahama Stadium will be the stage for a heated derby as Tamale City FC face sworn rivals Real Tamale United (RTU) on Matchday Two of the 2025/26 Access Bank Division One League Zone One.

Both sides, former Premier League outfits, are chasing a swift return to the top flight after near misses last season.

RTU, who lost out to Techiman Eleven Wonders in the playoffs, endured a disappointing start to the new campaign, failing to secure even a point at home against Sankara Nationals. Tamale City, by contrast, made a flying start with a hard-fought win over Bolga All Stars and will look to build on that momentum in front of their fans.

Derbies between the two Tamale giants are known for intensity, drama, and passionate support, and Sunday’s clash promises to be no different.

Elsewhere in Zone One B, William Amoako’s 70th-minute strike gave Legon Cities a debut win over Wamanafo Mighty Royals. The Royals, relegated last season, will visit Berekum Arsenal in search of redemption.

Northern City, fresh from a 4-0 thrashing of TF Exponential FC, meet Yapei United, while Mighty Royals host Techiman Liberty Youth. Debibi United will also play Victory Club Warriors.

MultiChoice Ghana, the owner of DStv Ghana, has apologised to the general public over an FAQ that appeared to contradict the announcement of a deal on the pricing and value of its services.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the company explained that the FAQ created the wrong impression that it was at odds with the upgraded DStv package value announced by the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George.

“Following the recent joint press conference with the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, the National Communications Authority, MultiChoice Africa, and MultiChoice Ghana, we wish to clarify the FAQs published on our website, which created an erroneous impression of a contradiction regarding the DStv value offering, which is effective today, 1 October 2025. We would like to clarify as follows,” parts of the statement read.

The company further clarified that the minister’s announcement reflected the actual deal reached, and not what was communicated in the FAQ.

‘It’s just a promotion’ – MultiChoice counters Sam George again over DStv packages

“We fully support the joint media statement that was issued by the Honourable Minister, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, and implementation of same has already commenced. As contained in the said joint media statement regarding the value offering, the Committee will reconvene in three (3) months to evaluate the impact of this initiative. This will be a periodic exercise.

“There is no restriction on a subscriber’s choice of bouquet. This offer is available to both existing, returning, and new customers from 1st October 2025,” the company added.

The statement concluded with an apology, “We apologise for any inconvenience the FAQs may have caused.”

Sam George had earlier announced that DStv subscribers in Ghana would enjoy between 33% and 50% more value on their subscriptions from Wednesday, October 1, 2025, following an agreement between the Ministry and MultiChoice Africa.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, September 29, 2025, he noted that MultiChoice Africa had committed to rolling out an unprecedented value offer in Ghana, giving subscribers between 33% and 50% more value depending on their package.

“MultiChoice Africa has committed to an unprecedented increase in value offer only in Ghana, which will result in Ghanaian DStv subscribers getting more services for less. Depending on the DStv package or bouquet you use, subscribers will get between 33% to 50% more value,” he remarked.

The Tema-Mpakadan passenger train came to an unexpected halt just a few meters from the railway station after its emergency brake was activated.

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Railway Development Authority, Dr. Frederick Appoh, in an interview with Adom News explained that investigations are underway to determine exactly which emergency brake was engaged, though technicians have since confirmed the train remains in working condition.

Some passengers who spoke to said they were stuck inside the coaches for close to 45 minutes in uncomfortable heat.

The incident has reignited concerns about reliability on the newly introduced rail service, which many hoped would ease transportation challenges.

Let Africa lead with solutions in digital financial inclusion – Frimpong Manso

0

By Eunice Hilda A. Mensah

Accra, Oct.01, GNA – Mr Peter Frimpong Manso, the Lead Organiser, the Digital Assets Summit Africa (DASA) 2025, has called on Africa to lead with solutions that reflects its realities and aspirations and not be a bystander in the digital financial revolution.

“Around the world, digital assets are redefining how people pay, save, invest, and trade. Global adoption has already surpassed half a billion users. Meanwhile, central banks from Asia to Europe are rolling out digital currencies. If Africa waits too long, we risk being shaped by frameworks we did not help design,” he added.

Mr Frimpong Manso made the call at a two-day DASA 2025 held in Accra to create a trusted platform where policy, innovation, and investment converged to shape Africa’s place in the global digital economy.

The conversation around digital assets, he said was not just about technology, but also about inclusion, trust, jobs, and sovereignty.

“It is about ensuring that the farmer in Tamale, the trader in Accra, and the entrepreneur in Lagos can benefit from a system that is faster, safer, and more open,” he added.

Mr Frimpong Manso, also the Chief Executive Officer of Promark Elite Ltd, underscored that the urgency of adoption was clear and whether it was lowering the cost of remittances, unlocking new trade finance opportunities under Africa Continental Free Trade Area, or expanding access to credit through tokenised assets, digital finance could help to solve long-standing challenges that had held back Africa’s economies.

“But this will only happen if we work together with regulators, banks, innovators, and citizens, with shared vision and responsibility.

Mr Frimpong Manso who officially launched DASA as an annual platform, said it was a permanent fixture for Africa’s digital finance ecosystem and would continue to be the stage where policymakers, innovators, investors, and thought leaders gathered to chart the way forward.

Mr Harold Adlai Agyeman, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Ghana to the United Nations, speaking on the, “Impact of Digital Assets in Africa’s Burgeoning Market”, said an annual growth rate of 6.37 per cent was anticipated for 2025- 2026 and the user penetration rate was projected at 5.5 per cent for 2025 and 5.9 per cent for 2026.

By some projections, he said the digital assets market in Africa would reach US$5.6 billion by the end of year with nearly 76 million users by 2026.

However, it had placed aside total market capitalization of US$2.7 trillion in 2024, and a digital assets custody of around US$708 billion by the end of this year, adding that there was much room to grow.

Mr Agyeman noted that the scope for growth for the digital assets market on the continent of Africa was one that all must work towards, especially given that, thus far the market had been concentrated in key regional hubs like Nigeria, South Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya and Ghana.

“Even as institutional interest grows, fuelled by better infrastructure and evolving regulations, we continue to see a dominance of stablecoins in the African digital assets market, particularly those pegged to the US dollar, which accounts for nearly half of all digital transactions,” he said.

Africa, he noted was indeed experiencing a digital revolution, with mobile penetration, fintech adoption, and blockchain innovation accelerating.

John Barnes has been declared bankrupt John Barnes has been declared bankrupt

Liverpool and England legend John Barnes has been officially declared bankrupt after amassing debts in excess of £1.5 million.

The bankruptcy order was issued last week, marking a new low in the financial struggles of the former winger, once celebrated as one of the most gifted players of his generation.

Barnes, 61, had already faced financial scrutiny in recent years. In 2023, he was handed a three-and-a-half-year ban from serving as a company director, following the collapse of his business, John Barnes Media Limited.

A liquidators’ progress report published in July revealed the scale of the liabilities left behind.

According to Telegraph Sport, Barnes owed HM Revenue and Customs £776,878 in unpaid VAT, National Insurance, and PAYE contributions.

In addition, there were £461,849 outstanding to unsecured creditors. The company also carried a director’s loan account debt of £226,000, alongside liquidators’ costs amounting to £56,535.

These financial woes have now culminated in the bankruptcy order, which will restrict Barnes’s financial activities until his discharge and could potentially affect his ability to work in certain business roles.

Barnes remains a revered figure in English football, having played over a decade for Liverpool during their dominant spell in the late 1980s and early 1990s, while also earning 79 caps for England.

Since retiring, he has worked as a pundit, motivational speaker, and charity ambassador, but financial challenges have overshadowed his post-playing career.

At least 30 people have died and more than 200 others have been injured after scaffolding collapsed at a church in Ethiopia.

Thousands of worshippers were gathered at the Arerti Mariam church early in the morning when the structure fell, local police inspector Ahmed Gebeyehu told BBC Amharic.

The crowd had visited the church in the central Minjar Sheknora area, about 70 km (45 miles) from the capital Addis Ababa, as part of the annual Orthodox Christian celebration of St Mary.

Mr Ahmed said the death toll might increase, adding that those confirmed deceased were aged between 25 and 80.

Local authorities say many people are still trapped under the rubble and that rescue operations are underway.

Eyewitnesses described the incident as sudden and chaotic, as attendees scattered in panic to save their lives.

“A large section of the church collapsed – the sound of the wooden structure giving way was loud and terrifying,” said one eyewitness.

Some of the severely injured victims have been transferred to Addis Ababa for further treatment.

A government statement shared by the state-run Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) expressed “deep condolences for the damage caused by the collapse of the scaffolding”.

The statement also stressed that “safety must be given priority” during all construction projects.

Health and safety regulations are poorly enforced in Ethiopia, and construction disasters are common.
