Former Deputy National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Biney, has apologised to business mogul Dr Osei Kwame Despite on behalf of Dancehall artiste Shatta Wale.

During a live discussion on Peace FM, Chief Biney paused the conversation, went on his knees, and pleaded with the Despite Media founder to forgive Shatta for derogatory comments he made against him in the past.

He also advised fans of Shatta Wale to be cautious with their words when speaking about Dr Osei Kwame Despite, noting that the business mogul deserves respect.

Shatta Wale’s insults on Fadda Dickson and Dr. Osei Kwame Despite pained me a lot – Mr. Logic

“I want to humbly plead with Boss Osei Kwame Despite, wherever he may be, to kindly take what I am about to say into consideration. On behalf of my brother, Nii Armah (Shatta Wale), I ask for forgiveness for any derogatory comments he may have made against him. I plead that he forgives him from his heart, because at the end of the day, he is like a son to him,” Chief Biney said.

The apology comes against the backdrop of an incident in October 2023, when Shatta Wale launched an attack on Despite Media and its owners, including Dr Osei Kwame Despite, as well as broadcaster Akwasi Aboagye.

Shatta Wale’s outburst was triggered after Aboagye, a broadcaster who works under one of the Despite Media brands questioned Shatta Wale’s claim that he had been paid £80,000 for his performance at the Ghana Music Awards UK 2023, stating that the figure was exaggerated.

Shatta Wale responded furiously, insulting both Aboagye and the Despite Media management.

His comments led to him blacklisted from all platforms under the Despite Media Group.

IGP Yohuno weighs in on gun possession legalities amid arms proliferation concerns

Christian Yohuno is the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Yohuno is the Inspector General of Police (IGP)

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Yohuno, has addressed the national discussion surrounding legal gun possession, stating that the registration and renewal process is one of the easiest in the country.

His explanation falls on the back of widespread debates on the proliferation of arms in the country with recent findings that suggest that there are a lot of unregistered arms in the country.

Speaking at the Public Accounts Committee session on September 30, 2025, the IGP offered clarity on how citizens can legally acquire and renew their license for a firearm.

NACSA sensitises students in Kumasi on firearms and security awareness

He indicated that legal possession is primarily achieved by registering the weapon to acquire a license through the firearms registry.

“To register a gun means that you have to be given the license or the permit to possess a gun through this firearms registry,” IGP explained.

He noted that the permit is issued for a period of one year, after which it must be renewed, similar to a driver’s license.

The IGP, however, indicated that the main problem the police face is that the public fails to renew licenses promptly.

“People don’t actually go straight to renew their licenses until something happens with the gun before the police get to know that such a license holder has not renewed it,” he noted.

Swift passage of Firearms Regulation Bill needed – Small Arms Commission

IGP Yohuno stressed that the process is remarkably easy and efficient.

“One of the easiest license or renewals to possess is the possession and the renewal of your gun license. It doesn’t take you more than 30 minutes to go to this office, firearms office, and immediately they check all the records and then the license is renewed,” he assured the committee.

Police using open-source, advanced intelligence to tackle cybercrime – Interior Minister

0

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has disclosed that the Ghana Police Service is making significant strides in tackling cybercrime through the deployment of modern technology and advanced investigative techniques.

Speaking at the launch of Cybersecurity Awareness Month in Accra on Wednesday, October 1, the minister said the police, through their Digital and Cybersecurity Unit, are handling a wide range of cases, including mobile money fraud, online impersonation, sexual extortion, and financial cybercrime.

“The modern digital forensic lab has been equipped to examine seized digital devices such as mobile phones, computers and storage media to ensure that credible evidence is produced in court to secure justice for victims,” he explained.

Mr. Mubarak further revealed that the Police Service is leveraging open-source intelligence techniques and an international data-sharing platform to track and neutralise cyber threats before they escalate. This approach, he said, has enabled security agencies to expose cross-border criminal networks and better safeguard Ghana’s digital infrastructure.

He also underscored the need for sustained investment in the fight against cybercrime, stressing the importance of both technological and human capacity.

“The fight against cybercrime demands continued investment in equipment and knowledge. The Ghana Police Service is actively training investigators, forensic experts, and prosecutors in modern digital techniques, working with academia, professional institutions and international organisations such as Interpol. The service is building a new generation of cyber experts, equipped to handle the most sophisticated tricks,” he noted.

NPP bold ladies in Eastern Region slam 15 MPs over Bawumia’s endorsement

0

The NPP Bold Ladies of the Eastern Region have expressed strong disappointment with a group of 15 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament, accusing them of placing personal interests above the party’s welfare.

In a statement, the group referenced earlier actions of the MPs, led by Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo, MP for Achiase, who had publicly declared support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at a press conference in the region.

The group condemned the conduct of the lawmakers, describing it as divisive and a betrayal of party unity. They recalled Speaker Alban Bagbin’s caution on July 10, 2024, that the public holds Parliament in low regard because of the behavior of some MPs, which he likened to “kindergarten pupils.”

According to the Bold Ladies, the actions of the 15 MPs exemplify the very concerns raised by the Speaker.

“We wish to register our disapproval towards their actions and assure them that we shall not allow them to mortgage the future of the region and the party at large for their personal gains or gratification. They should be advised that hate and envy can’t and won’t win,” the statement said.

The group further alleged that while Dr. Bryan Acheampong had provided financial support to facilitate the party’s grassroots campaigns during the last general election, some MPs diverted the funds meant for polling stations.

“Many of our members have confirmed receiving the support, just that they were not informed about the source. Some, however, have not received and have expressed anger at some MPs. Anytime Dr. Acheampong mentions the support, it becomes evident that many of the MPs have pocketed the money,” the statement alleged.

The Bold Ladies called on the MPs to refund the monies to their constituencies and show gratitude to Dr. Bryan Acheampong, whom they praised for his contributions to the party.

“Dr. Bryan Acheampong’s campaign is anchored on truth, honesty, transparency, and party unity. He has done what many could not and did not do,” they stressed.

The group insisted that the MPs had “lost the plot and missed the road” and vowed to resist any attempts to undermine Dr. Acheampong’s efforts.

“We shall fight for Dr. Bryan, and we shall fight for our party,” the statement concluded.

Ghana sees sharp rise in cocoa supply, easing global price pressure

0

File photo of cocoa beans File photo of cocoa beans

Ghana’s cocoa deliveries to warehouses in August more than quadrupled compared to the same period last year, as an accelerated start to the season provided early cash to farmers, contributing to a supply increase that is helping cool global prices.

This is according to a report by Bloomberg, as sighted by GhanaWeb Business.

This year, the country decided to start its cocoa season in August, two months ahead of the usual schedule, to support farmers who sell their crop at a government-set price.

Bloomberg reported that arrivals of the chocolate-making ingredient in the four weeks ending September 4, 2025, reached 50,440 metric tons, compared to about 11,000 tons delivered during the same period in 2024, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Ghana, which is the world’s second-largest producer raised the amount it pays farmers for cocoa beans by 4.2%, to GH¢3,228.75 ($261) per 64-kilogram bag in the 2025–2026 season. This is expected to reduce incentives for smuggling beans to neighboring countries where prices are higher.

Additionally, the market is closely watching supplies from West African growers after a series of back-to-back poor harvests fueled a global shortage that sent New York futures to record highs last year.

While a small surplus is expected in the current 2024–2025 season, the market remains tight, and prices are well above historical levels.

Most of the beans delivered to warehouses are destined for export, though some are sold to local processors.

Meanwhile, Ghana has forecast a cocoa crop of 650,000 tons for the 2025–2026 season, up from 600,000 tons in the previous harvest.

The world’s top grower, Ivory Coast, where farmers’ pay is also set by the government, is expected to announce an increase in farmgate prices for the new season, which begins on October 1, 2025.

Ghana’s efforts to curb smuggling have shown some progress. A new funding model, in which top exporters help finance purchases, has also improved the tracking of beans from farms, according to sources who requested anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly.

Bending AI to Africa’s needs: the key to transforming classrooms

0

Niall Mcnulty Ai Product Innovation Leader Cambridge University Press Assessment
Niall Mcnulty Ai Product Innovation Leader Cambridge University Press Assessment

By Niall McNulty, AI Product & Innovation Leader, Cambridge University Press & Assessment

The opportunities that artificial intelligence (AI) offer African teachers and students are immense; the AI education market in the Middle East and Africa is projected to hit $1.7 billion by 2030. Yet in Sub-Saharan Africa, where student–teacher ratios can reach 50:1 and many children still lack access to quality learning resources, the need for innovative solutions is urgent. What excites me most about AI in African education is the potential to address persistent inequalities in ways that haven’t been possible before.

For too long, students in under-resourced schools have had fewer opportunities simply because their teachers lacked access to support, materials, or professional development. AI can change this dynamic fundamentally, making world-class support accessible even in the most remote classrooms.

Across Africa, AI has the potential to drive change in schools, but only if it is shaped to fit the realities of African classrooms, rather than forcing classrooms to adapt to the technology. The real promise lies in AI’s power to personalise learning at scale, helping teachers meet the needs of every student in classes that are often large and diverse. When AI is guided by local priorities, cultural context and teacher expertise, it stops being a futuristic add-on and becomes a practical ally.

The challenges

Three obstacles stand out most clearly from our work across the continent.

Connectivity remains a major challenge across much of Sub-Saharan Africa. Teachers want to use AI tools but can’t always access them when they need them most. That means that classroom tools need to have offline capabilities, such as pre-generated material, and tools need to work effectively with intermittent internet connections.

Language barriers present another complexity. While many teachers are comfortable teaching in English, this is not their students mother tongue and they often need to explain concepts in local languages. We’re working on multilingual capabilities through researching the African language capabilities of leading AI chatbots, but this remains an ongoing challenge that requires careful cultural and linguistic adaptation.

Perhaps most importantly, we’re hearing that teachers want more time to explore and experiment with AI tools. The demanding nature of teaching, particularly in resource-constrained environments, means that many educators struggle to find space for learning new technologies. If adoption is to succeed, professional development and time allowances must be built into the process from the start.

Making AI familiar

The beauty of AI integration in education lies not in expensive hardware or complex software, but in leveraging the tools teachers already have access to. Through our work across Sub-Saharan Africa, we’ve discovered that the most practical entry point is often the smartphone in a teacher’s pocket.

Our WhatsApp teacher support AI chatbot project in South Africa demonstrates this perfectly. Teachers are already comfortable with WhatsApp; they understand how to send messages, and they can access support instantly without needing new apps or training on unfamiliar platforms. When a teacher in a rural classroom needs help differentiating a lesson for mixed-ability learners or wants quick feedback on a lesson plan, they can simply message our AI assistant and receive immediate, contextualised support.

This approach works because it builds on existing digital behaviours rather than requiring teachers to learn entirely new systems. We’ve found that teachers who start with familiar interfaces, such as WhatsApp, develop confidence that naturally extends to other AI tools over time.

Empowering educators as architects of learning

At Cambridge, we believe the power of AI in education lies in a human-centred approach that starts “where teachers are,” respecting their agency and empowering them as architects of learning, not just consumers of technology.

It is this human-centred approach that is key to helping students navigate change and use technology effectively. A recent Cambridge report, ‘Preparing learners to thrive in a changing world’, which captures the views of nearly 7,000 teachers and students across 150 countries, shows that while technology is widely embraced to support teaching and learning, over a third of teachers surveyed (34%) selected over-reliance on technology as the greatest challenge that technology might pose in preparing students for the future. In this age of AI, we believe that it is essential for students to develop a solid foundation of subject knowledge to help them interpret information critically and effectively.

This insight is one reason we are especially focused on helping African education systems avoid the challenges other regions have faced with technology adoption. Our approach emphasises teacher training, infrastructure readiness, and gradual implementation, rather than rapid, large-scale deployments that too often fail to deliver their intended outcomes.

We’ve structured our Getting Started with AI in the Classroom guide around practical scenarios that teachers encounter daily and our professional development programme for STEM teachers exemplifies this philosophy too.

Rather than starting with “here’s how to use this AI tool”, we begin with “here’s how AI can solve real problems you face in your classroom”. Teachers learn to evaluate AI outputs critically, asking questions like: Does this explanation match my students’ cultural context? Are there biases in the examples provided? How can I adapt this suggestion to fit my teaching style?

A future built for teachers

Teachers in Africa are incredibly creative and adaptable, and we’re starting to see them use AI in ways that we never anticipated. They’re adapting tools to local languages, incorporating traditional knowledge systems, and developing approaches that reflect their deep understanding of their communities. This innovation from the ground up suggests that AI integration in African classrooms will look quite different from implementations in other parts of the world, and that’s exactly as it should be.

Our vision is AI that helps preserve what’s best about African education while addressing its most persistent challenges. This means supporting the strong relationships between teachers and students, the collaborative learning approaches, and the community connections that characterise many African classrooms, while using AI to reduce administrative burden, enhance personalisation and provide teachers with better support.

To make this vision real, three things are essential: deeper investment in teacher training, stronger collaboration with ministries and local tech innovators, and sustained infrastructure development to bridge connectivity gaps.

Ultimately, I’m excited about a future where every African student has access to excellent education, supported by teachers who feel confident, well-resourced and professionally fulfilled. AI won’t create this future by itself, but it can be a powerful tool in the hands of dedicated educators working toward that goal.

Gold hits record high as US government shutdown begins

0

Gold prices hit a record high on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, as the US government began shutting down after Congress failed to approve fresh federal funding.

Spot gold surged to a record $2,875.53 per ounce, while December gold futures peaked at $3,903.45/oz. Spot prices later eased slightly, trading at $3,862.

The shutdown took effect at midnight after a last-minute spending bill backed by the Republican Party failed to pass a Senate vote amid persistent opposition from Democrats.

Gold has posted a series of record highs this week amid mounting signs of US political deadlock, which weighed on the dollar and pushed traders toward safe-haven assets.

From $1,660 to $3,811: How gold prices doubled in three years

Other precious metals also recorded strong gains this week as safe-haven demand spilled over from gold, with platinum and silver reaching 12-year and 14-year highs, respectively.

Spot silver rose 0.9% to $47.05/oz on October 1, 2025, while spot platinum slipped 0.3% to $1,572.18/oz.

The US government shutdown is expected to delay a highly anticipated labor market report due this week, and a prolonged shutdown could disrupt the release of future US economic data.

Liverpool’s 1–0 loss to Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, was marked by a moving tribute to Diogo Jota before the match began.

The Turkish side honoured the late Portuguese forward with a giant display of his image on the stadium screen, accompanied by the message: “Rest in peace 1996–2025.”

The simple yet powerful gesture drew applause from both the home and away fans.

The moment highlighted the widespread grief Jota’s passing has brought to the sport, touching not only his native Portugal and England, where he shone for Liverpool, but also fans and clubs worldwide.

Galatasaray mock Liverpool on social media after Champions League defeat

For a brief pause in Istanbul, the competition paved the way for unity, as Galatasaray paid homage to a footballer and brother whose life ended far too soon.

On the pitch, however, it was Galatasaray who emerged victorious. Victor Osimhen’s 16th-minute penalty, awarded after Baris Alper Yilmaz was fouled in the box decided the game.

Liverpool pushed hard for an equaliser, with chances falling to Cody Gakpo and Hugo Ekitike, but they could not break through a resilient home defence.

Their night was made worse by injuries to Alisson and Ekitike, while a late penalty decision in their favour was overturned by VAR.

The defeat leaves Liverpool facing questions about form and fitness as their Champions League campaign continues.

Trade Minister Engages Stakeholders On ICUMS

0

Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare

The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has convened a high-level stakeholder meeting to address operational concerns with the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS), with the aim of facilitating trade.

Speaking at the Stakeholder engagement which brought together representatives from ministries, departments, agencies, the Customs Division, freight forwarders, and private sector actors in Accra, the Minister highlighted the dual nature of ICUMS’s performance, noting that while the system has contributed significantly to efficiency, cost reduction, and the fight against illegal activities at ports and borders, several operational challenges remain.

Introduced in 2020, ICUMS was designed to consolidate customs procedures by integrating valuation, classification, risk management, and payments into a single digital system.

The platform has been instrumental in improving transparency and boosting government revenue collection.

However, intermittent downtimes and implementation hiccups have sparked criticism among freight forwarders, importers, and exporters who argue that the inefficiencies undermine the benefits.

Ghana Link was tasked to demonstrate the functionality of ICUMS, share steps taken to address challenges, and provide clarity on outstanding concerns.

Madam Ofosu-Adjare commended stakeholders for their cooperation and urged Ghana Link to meet the agreed November deadline for the reforms.

She further pledged to collaborate with the Minister of Finance to explore measures that would address concerns over the imposition of penalties and unauthorised charges on traders.

Director of Operations at ICUMS, Raymond Amaglo, assured stakeholders that the company is working on a comprehensive upgrade of the system.

He revealed that by the end of October 2025, the improvements would increase ICUMS’s stability, capacity, and reliability, thereby reducing system downtimes that have frequently disrupted port operations.

“Our priority is to deliver a seamless trade facilitation process while ensuring effective revenue mobilisation for the government,” he added.

Ghana Link representative reaffirmed the company’s long-term commitment to ensuring that ICUMS operates as a world-class system that supports both government’s development agenda and the competitiveness of the private sector.

As Ghana’s trade volumes continue to expand under regional agreements such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the efficiency of customs management systems like ICUMS will remain critical to strengthening the country’s position as a competitive hub for trade and investment.

The forum also served as a platform for open dialogue between stakeholders and the service provider

Share Foundation celebrates 20 years of youth-aged support

0

By Laudia Sawer

Tema, Oct. 01, GNA- Share Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, has commemorated its 20th anniversary, celebrating decades of empowering the youth and caring for senior citizens.

The Foundation, founded by Madam Lily Akua Mintah in 2005 with 20 brilliant but needy children, aimed at supporting the vulnerable within Tema and its environs and reducing the high rate of school dropout within the Tema township.

Madam Mintah recounted that she conceived the idea of a foundation after being involved in a serious motor crash, which awakened in her the need to touch lives before she passes on, thereby using Tema Newtown as a starting point.

According to her, the decision to commence her philanthropic work from Tema Newtown was due to its dense population and high rate of school dropouts and teenage pregnancies, adding that she decided to help these vulnerable children in the area financially and get them access to quality education to become responsible future leaders.

“There is a huge gap in the capacity of our local organisation in the delivery of quality educational facilities and academic support for the young people of our community,” she said, disclosing that over 400 young people have climbed the academic ladder and obtained vocational training, among others, over the years with the support of sponsors and donors.

She indicated that most of the beneficiaries were now teachers, nurses, medical doctors, officers, public servants, entrepreneurs and many more, noting that through the Share Foundation, they were also contributing their quota to national development.

Touching on some of its projects, she said the foundation had implemented several projects across the 16 regions of Ghana through their scholarship schemes, support to orphanages, building of libraries, and establishment of reading clubs, among others.

Madam Mintah said their work had brought many recognitions, adding, however, that financial support from individuals and corporate organisations kept dwindling, especially during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr Henry Tetteh, a beneficiary, speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), expressed his deepest appreciation to the Share Foundation for supporting him throughout his basic education, adding that he joined the foundation in 2009 at junior high school, and the support received helped him through to the tertiary level of education.

He urged other beneficiaries to exhibit good character, be humble and respect the leadership of the Foundation and learn to be able to achieve their dreams through the support being provided them.

Sarkodie is the greatest rapper I have ever seen – Obrafour

Obrafour is a legendary Hiplife artiste Obrafour is a legendary Hiplife artiste

When it comes to the rap industry in Ghana, many have given Sarkodie his flowers. Legendary Hiplife artiste Obrafour is the latest to do so, labelling Sarkodie the greatest rapper he has ever seen.

In an interview with content creator Code Micky on September 30, 2025, Obrafour reflected on Sarkodie’s early days in the music industry.

He recalled witnessing the rapper’s humble beginnings and the unwavering determination that set him apart from his peers at the time.

Watch as Sarkodie ’emotionally’ kneels before Obrafour during Rapperholic concert

According to the veteran musician, Sarkodie entered the rap scene with a rare drive and discipline that made it clear he was destined for greatness.

“I witnessed Sarkodie’s humble beginnings and I could see the hunger in him to fight and achieve his dreams. From the moment he entered the rap scene, I knew he was the chosen one. Sarkodie stood out from the rest even though others were also trying their best. I didn’t need anyone to tell me; I felt it in my spirit. He is the greatest rapper I have ever seen,” Obrafour stated.

Just recently, rapper Kojo Cue also described Sarkodie as the greatest, pointing to his consistency, accolades, and impact as proof.

I got angry when Obrafour released ‘Kasiebo’ song – Okyeame Kwame recounts

He explained that Sarkodie’s achievements place him far ahead of his peers, both past and present.

“Sarkodie is the greatest rapper of all time. It is metrics, it’s undeniable. You can check everywhere. Based on consistent hits, based on how huge his fanbase is. The only person I can think of who comes close to Sark in terms of fanbase is Lord Kenya, but because Lord Kenya stopped at a point, I don’t think he can go a hundred songs back-to-back with Sark.

“The most nominated, has won the most awards. Whether you like it or not, you cannot argue it,” Kojo Cue said.

Mussa Dankwah’s presidential ambitions polls breaking up NDC and Mahama government

0

There is growing concern within the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the activities of Mussa Dankwah and his outfit, Global InfoAnalytics, following the release of controversial polls on the presidential ambitions of key government appointees just eight to nine months into the Mahama administration.

Many within the party believe these surveys are being fuelled by appointees eager to see the back of President John Dramani Mahama, while others oppose him outright as flagbearer.

Critics argue that the fixation on succession is distracting appointees from their mandate, undermining government cohesion and focus.

Reports suggest that some ministers have stopped working harmoniously, with others already building campaign “war chests” and even selecting potential running mates for the 2028 presidential race, long before the NDC has opened its processes.

What has further unsettled the party is the conduct of its National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who, rather than calming tensions, has declared his own interest in succeeding Mahama. In videos circulated ahead of a planned ‘Thank You Tour’, he has described himself as “courageous”, “trustworthy” and “experienced”, raising suspicion among party faithful.

Party insiders believe Mussa Dankwah, through his polling activities, is sowing discord within the government, with some warning that the growing divisions could pose a threat to national security.

They have been urging the president to take decisive action, either by calling ministers to order or dismissing those who refuse to comply with directives to focus on their official mandates, in order to avoid the risk of becoming a lame-duck administration.

Another faction within the NDC believes the Presidency must also rein in Mussa Dankwah and his Global InfoAnalytics, directing him to concentrate on tracking government policies rather than the presidential ambitions of appointees, as such distractions risk undermining both the government and the NDC’s plans for Ghanaians, which have already been marketed to and endorsed by the electorate.

The latest Global InfoAnalytics survey places Tamale South MP Haruna Iddrisu as the frontrunner to lead the NDC into the 2028 elections with 30% support.

He is followed by Asiedu Nketiah with 24%, finance minister Cassiel Ato Forson with 18%, and former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah with 10%. North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa polled 8%, while Eric Opoku, Joshua Alabi, Armah-Kofi Buah and Kwame Awuah-Darko each secured 2%. Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah managed 1%, while Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije registered no significant support.

Alternative scenarios show Haruna’s dominance more clearly. In a three-way race excluding Ato Forson, he widens his lead to 45%, compared to Asiedu Nketiah’s 37% and Julius Debrah’s 18%. Among NDC supporters alone, his backing rises to 47%, with particularly strong support in swing regions.

However, if Haruna does not contest, Asiedu Nketiah emerges slightly ahead with 40%, followed closely by Ato Forson on 38% and Julius Debrah on 22%. In this scenario, Forson performs strongest in swing regions, outpacing Asiedu 47% to 38%.

The findings suggest that while Haruna remains the clear favourite, his absence would create a fiercely competitive two-horse race between Asiedu Nketiah and Ato Forson.

Mussa Dankwah’s polls also extend to potential inter-party matchups. A recent Global InfoAnalytics survey shows Asiedu Nketiah narrowly leading former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in a hypothetical 2028 presidential race, with 50% against 45%. The remaining 5% expressed preference for another candidate.

Another poll by the firm suggests Dr Bawumia remains the clear favourite to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2028, commanding 57% support among voters compared to 29% for Kennedy Ohene Agyapong. Other figures, including Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Dr Bryan Acheampong, trail with single-digit support.

Among NPP delegates, Dr Bawumia also enjoys a commanding lead with 47%, while Kennedy Agyapong follows at 17%. However, a significant 27% of delegates remain undecided.

About a week ago, Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, cautioned senior NDC figures against prematurely positioning themselves as Mahama’s successors. His warning followed an earlier Global InfoAnalytics poll suggesting that Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Asiedu Nketiah and other influential members had already begun subtle campaigns ahead of the next primaries.

Speaking on Channel One TV on 23 September, Ambassador Smith described such moves as premature and distracting.

“It’s normal for them, maybe they are trying to prepare the ground for themselves, I don’t know. I personally think that talks about preparing to replace John Mahama is too early because we haven’t even done one year since coming to office,” he said.

Smith warned that premature succession campaigns risk derailing government focus on development.

“They have taken off too soon. If too many people are entering the race now, then instead of focusing on building this nation and pursuing President Mahama’s agenda, we will be distracted by internal campaigns,” he stressed.

He urged party members to allow President Mahama to complete his term before engaging in discussions about NDC leadership.

Similarly, Dr Tony Aidoo, a former Ghanaian ambassador to the Netherlands and a leading figure in the NDC, has said he would prefer not to live to witness the party’s presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 elections.

He argued that the future of the NDC and any potential presidential aspirant will depend mainly on the performance of Mahama’s administration.

Speaking on Radio Gold, he remarked: “Whoever plans to succeed Mahama will find that much depends on the outcome of his administration. If it does well, people will be attracted to the party, and that will create the momentum on which a potential successor can build.”

Stonebwoy’s ‘Historic’ Comment Causes Stir

0

Stonebwoy

Social media has been buzzing following Sarkodie’s Rapperholic concert in Kumasi, but the celebrations unexpectedly pulled fellow musician Stonebwoy into the spotlight.

The stir began when a fan shared a clip from Stonebwoy’s 2023 BHIM Concert with lyrics from one of his songs. Many online users interpreted the post as a subtle dig at Sarkodie. Things escalated when Stonebwoy quoted the fan’s post with the single word, “Historic.”

This sparked backlash, with critics accusing the dancehall star of jealousy and trying to overshadow Sarkodie’s big night. Others, however, came to Stonebwoy’s defence, pointing out that he had used the same “Historic” caption days earlier in support of Sarkodie ahead of the concert, proving it was consistent praise rather than rivalry.

The debate comes as Sarkodie recently expressed interest in featuring Stonebwoy at a future Rapperholic event, a move many fans say highlights the mutual respect between the two.

Asante Bediatuo performs for Despite and friends

It is not yet known what the occasion was. However, it took a solemn turn when the former presidential secretary took the microphone to perform a song for the crowd.

Dressed in an all-black political suit, Bediatuo delivered a masterful performance of Nana Tuffour’s hit track Nyankonton. Off Tuffour’s 1993 album, Genesis, Nyankonton talks about life’s struggles in relation to poverty, ill health, and childlessness; the song’s theme seemed to mimic the current status of someone with poor health.

In the video, widely circulated on Facebook on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, Despite and his friends looked captivated by Bediatuo’s performance, and they spurred him on.

Sammy Kuffour, who helped Bediatuo to stand on his feet by holding him, also had a microphone to back him.

Asante Bediatuo’s 2nd public appearance after stroke

The video of Bediatuo’s performance of Nana Tuffour’s song happens to be the second time he has made a viral public appearance since he was reported sick, while on a duty tour of the US with Akufo-Addo in 2024.

In a statement released by the presidency on October 3, 2024, the government indicated that he was receiving medical treatment and further requested continued prayers and support for him and his family.

“He is currently in stable condition and responding well to treatment. According to the medical team, Nana Bediatuo Asante’s recovery is on track, and we remain hopeful for his swift return to full strength.”

The government statement came at a time when rumours were going viral that the presidential secretary had passed away.

While the statement did not disclose the ailment he was suffering from, a Ghana News Agency (GNA) report indicated that Bediatuo had suffered a stroke and undergone a lengthy surgery

Following the statement about his condition, Asante Bediatuo remained in the US for treatment and even stayed away from the last two months of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) campaign for the 2024 general elections, which they eventually lost heavily to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He surfaced in the media almost six months after his stroke, joining Akufo-Addo to celebrate his 81st birthday on March 29, 2025.

As reported at the time of his first public appearance, he showed signs of half-paralysis and was using a walking stick to aid in his walking.

Akufo-Addo rates Mahama’s government as abysmal

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that Bediatuo’s former boss, Nana Akufo-Addo, had shared his thoughts on the John Mahama-led government, which took over from him.

Addressing party supporters at a ceremony in Kumasi, the former president said the NDC government’s abysmal performance will let the electorate give power to the NPP in 2028.

TEWU-TUC suspends strike

0

The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has suspended its strike.

The union had been on strike over the government’s prolonged delays in finalising and signing their conditions of service agreement.

According to TEWU, recent engagements with the government have been productive, and steps are being taken to address their concerns.

They are expected to meet FWSC on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, to proceed with negotiations, conclude, and sign the various Conditions of Service of the affected institutions and TEWU of TUC membership.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, October 1, the General Secretary of TEWU-TUC, King James Azortibah, warned that the union will resume its industrial action if Tuesday’s scheduled meeting with the government does not produce positive outcomes.

“TEWU has decided to suspend the indefinite strike action, with effect from today, Wednesday, 1st October 2025, to allow for further discussions and implementation of the agreed terms.

All TEWU members in the aforementioned institutions are expected to resume work by Thursday, 2nd October 2025. All those who might have travelled outside their jurisdiction should report not later than Monday, 6th October 2025.

He added, “We emphasise that this is a suspension and not a call-off of the strike. We hope the FWSC and employer institutions will honour their side of the agreement, so that TEWU is not forced to do otherwise.”

SUSPENSION OF TEWU of TUC STRIKE ACTIONS
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Media,
Thank you for joining us today. The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of TUC (Ghana) embarked on an indefinite strike on 19th September 2025. Our members, including workers within the Ghana Education Service, Public and Technical Universities, staff of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, and the Ghana Library Authority, took this action to demand the conclusion of negotiation and signing of various Conditions of Service.

Our legal strike, which has gone on for almost two weeks and very impactful, drew significant attention and engagement from the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Jobs, National Labour Commission and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) with positive outcomes.
On Monday 29th September, 2025 TEWU Leadership held a meeting with FWSC and employer institutions. After a very constructive dialogue, the parties resolved to work towards an amicable solution to the concerns of Union. We are expected to meet FWSC on Tuesday, 7th October, 2025 to proceed with negotiations, conclude and sign the various Conditions of Service of the affected institutions and TEWU of TUC membership. This forms part of the agreed issues with the FWSC during the engagement.
Our friends from the media, and our cherished members, as a result of this positive development, TEWU has decided to SUSPEND the indefinite strike action, with effect from today Wednesday 1st October 2025, to allow for further discussions and implementation of the agreed terms.
All TEWU members in the aforementioned institutions are expected to resume work by Thursday, 2nd October 2025. All those who might have travelled outside their jurisdiction should report not later than Monday 6th October, 2025.
We emphasize that this is a SUSPENSION and not a called-off of the strike. We hope the FWSC and employer institutions will honour their side of the agreement, so that TEWU is not be forced to do otherwise.

We also reiterate that no TEWU member or non-teaching staff should be victimized for exercising their right to strike. The union leadership will defend any member facing victimization and unfair labour practices from their employer on this matter now or in the future. We, however, appreciate all Managements and School Heads, who have been cooperative and supportive by allowing us press home our demands without frustration and intimidation so far. We recognize their consciousness for delivering quality education service in Ghana and for accepting our collective struggle during this period.

TEWU shall remain a law-abiding union and will continue to pursue better conditions for our members. We acknowledge all our members; the National Executive Council, Management Committee, Regional Officers and their Councils, Local and District Executives, the Women and Youth Structures, all Association Executives within the Ghana Education Service, as well as our gallant Local Executives in the Public and Technical Universities, Ghana Library Authority, Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, our monitoring and the Task Force Team for their resolute support throughout the nine days of the strike.

We thank the media for the support and the needed attention in getting our message across.
We know our efforts have not been in vain. There is power in our collective action.
Long live TEWU of the Trades Union Congress!
Long live Ghana!
Thank you for your attention.

For the first pricing window of October 2025, some Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have begun adjusting the prices of petroleum products at the pumps.

As of 8:00 AM on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, checks by GhanaWeb Business show that market leader Star Oil is selling a litre of petrol at GH¢13.17, up from GH¢12.77 on September 1, 2025.

Diesel remains unchanged at GH¢13.45 per litre, while RON 95 is selling at GH¢14.68.

The company explained that the adjustment was influenced by developments in the international market and the exchange rate, adding: “As soon as market conditions improve, we will pass on any benefits to you as usual.”

Fuel costs climb again as cedi weakens

Shell, another major player, also adjusted its prices over the weekend. Diesel is now selling at GH¢14.18 per litre, while petrol, which rose to GH¢13.59 on September 2, 2025, has been slightly reduced to GH¢13.44.

At GOIL, petrol is selling at GH¢13.38, diesel at GH¢14.20, and RON 95 at GH¢15.25.

Meanwhile, some OMCs say they may hold off on price increases until October 2, 2025, citing competition as the reason for keeping prices unchanged during the second pricing window of September.

Doctor, clinic owner among four charged over woman’s death during C-section

The suspects appear in the dock in court on charges of manslaughter, conspiracy to commit a felony The suspects appear in the dock in court on charges of manslaughter, conspiracy to commit a felony

Four people have been charged before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court in connection with the death of 35-year-old Ritah Nansubuga, who died after undergoing a caesarean section at Sunset Consultant Clinic in Kampala earlier this month.

The group appeared on Tuesday before Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi and denied charges of manslaughter contrary to sections 170 and 173 of the Penal Code Act, and conspiracy to commit a felony contrary to section 363 of the Penal Code Act.

The accused are Dr. Henry Francis Kadaga, 47, an obstetrician and gynaecologist; Joel Kyowanika, 35, a medical imaging technologist and proprietor of Sunset Consultant Clinic; Hassan Budhugo, 43, an orthopaedic technologist; and businessman Ahamed Lutaaya Kalebu, 59.

According to the charge sheet, the four and others still at large, on September 4, 2025, at Sunset Clinic in Kampala, unlawfully caused the death of Nansubuga through negligence. They are accused of subjecting her to a major surgical procedure in unsuitable premises, with inadequate equipment, unqualified personnel, and poor care, which led to her death.

On the second count, prosecution alleges that the group willfully and unlawfully conspired to commit a felony by negligently conducting a caesarean section in an unfit environment, which resulted in Nansubuga’s death.

Prosecution, led by Ms Grace Amy, told court that investigations are still ongoing and asked for an adjournment regarding Lutaaya.

“Your worship, investigations in this case are still ongoing and because of this, we seek an adjournment. We also seek criminal summons against Lutaaya, who is not in court, to appear and take plea,” Ms Amy submitted.

Court records show the case arose from a complaint filed on September 9, 2025, by Ms Naomi Campbell Nambooze, a 36-year-old nursing officer based in Dubai and resident of Kakiri, Wakiso District.

Nambooze reported that her friend Ritah died on September 4 at Sunset Consultant Clinic, located in Mulago II Zone opposite the KCCA mortuary.

According to the case details, Ritah had been attending antenatal reviews in Dubai. She was introduced to Lutaaya by a friend, Hanifah Nakacwa. Lutaaya allegedly posed as a doctor at Mulago Specialized Women and Neonatal Hospital.

When Ritah returned to Uganda on August 2, 2025, Lutaaya, acting as Public Relations Officer of Sunset Consultant Clinic, reportedly persuaded her to seek delivery services there.

“On September 2, 2025, Ritah was admitted to Sunset Consultant Clinic. Kyowanika, the clinic’s proprietor, engaged Dr. Kadaga from Mulago Mobile Hospital to attend to her,” the court documents state.

They add: “On September 4, Dr Kadaga performed a caesarean section at the clinic. While a baby boy was successfully delivered, the mother died during the procedure.”

During the session, Magistrate Kayizzi issued criminal summons against Lutaaya to appear. Dr. Kadaga, Kyowanika, and Budhugo were remanded to Luzira Prison until October 8, 2025, when their bail application will be heard.

Mahama could have done more in galamsey fight – Sam George

0

Communications Minister says President John Mahama could have done more to tackle illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, but insists his commitment to the fight is far stronger than what Ghanaians witnessed under the Akufo-Addo administration.

Speaking on , Sam Nartey George defended his long-held position that galamsey can be crushed if there is real political will.

“Absolutely,” he said when asked if he still stood by his statement that former President Akufo-Addo, as Commander-in-Chief, could have ended galamsey in a week.

“That was seven years, nine months into the Nana Akufo-Addo administration. After multiple anti-galamsey task forces and millions of cedis spent, it was fair to demand action. We didn’t see it.”

The Ningo Prampram MP argued that the same standard applies to President Mahama, who has been in office for nine months.

“Do I wish I had seen more? Absolutely. I wish it ended today,” he admitted. “But in the nine months, I can confidently say that I see a desire and a will to deal with galamsey that didn’t exist in the previous eight years.”

According to him, President Mahama has already demonstrated political courage by allowing investigations into two of his own party executives accused of illegal mining.

“Under the previous president, a regional chairman openly told a minister that they must engage in galamsey because the party needed money. The president went on to campaign for that individual. That was tacit endorsement,” he said.

Sam George highlighted recent successes under President Mahama, including military operations that recovered seven out of nine forest reserves where mining had been ongoing.

He also pointed to a major stakeholder meeting slated for October 3, where more than 30 civil society organisations will meet the president to develop a national roadmap.

Still, he believes President Mahama must go further.

“A lot more could be done in terms of enforcement. We could move faster,” he stressed.

“The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has started fantastically well, but we must not rest on our laurels. We should go all out and win this war, if not for anything, in memory of the eight gallant sons who died in the helicopter crash.”

Responding to claims that he once called for a state of emergency in galamsey-hit areas, Sam George was emphatic: “I have never, ever called for a state of emergency.”

Instead, he advocated targeted and sustained military operations.

“Galamsey remains the biggest existential threat to our nation. It is Ghana’s version of Colombia’s drug cartels. Our armed forces are capable of launching surgical operations to win this war,” he maintained.

For Sam George, the difference between Mahama and his predecessor lies in sincerity.

“Have we fixed it? Not yet. But I am confident that before the expiration of President Mahama’s term, we will be in a better place,” he said.

Regina Daniels Faces Backlash Over Husband’s Post

Regina Daniels and Ned Nwoko

Nollywood actress Regina Daniels has been heavily criticised on social media after posting a video of her husband, Senator Ned Nwoko that many described as “disrespectful.”

The video, shared on Instagram, showed Regina and Nwoko in the restroom early in the morning. What shocked viewers, however, was the background soundtrack, which carried lyrics such as: “Husband is useless… yeye man must die… if you kill your husband, your life go better.” Regina captioned the video lightheartedly, saying she only wanted to “annoy” her husband.

quickly went viral, sparking outrage. Critics accused the actress of mocking her husband and questioned the impact on his public image. Others, however, dismissed it as a harmless joke blown out of proportion.

In response, Regina defended her actions, stressing that she is a content creator and does not care about public opinion.

She warned critics to stop leaving negative comments, insisting that their views do not affect her.

The controversy has since divided fans, with some demanding more respect for Ned Nwoko, while others applaud Regina’s playful side.

Goldridge Refinery CEO released on bail in MIIF corruption probe

0

The Chief Executive Officer of Goldridge Refinery Ltd, Nana Yaw Duodu, popularly known as Dr. Sledge, has been released from the custody of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) after meeting his bail conditions on Monday, September 29.

Duodu is under investigation for suspected corruption and corruption-related offences linked to the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), particularly in the management of its gold trade programme.

In February this year, the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, announced a probe into alleged corruption and related offences within MIIF’s operations, focusing on payments and transactions tied to several high-profile projects.

It is alleged that over $94 million in state funds were lost through Goldridge Refinery’s failure to honour trade settlements under the Gold for Forex and Gold for Oil initiatives.

The Minerals Income Investment Fund had earlier addressed reports of a $90 million loss, clarifying that its internal investigations showed the fund disbursed the cedi equivalent of $30 million in three tranches of $10 million each to Goldridge, its first aggregator, in 2023. This revolving monthly outlay, the fund noted, yielded an average of about $60 million per month over eleven months.

MIIF also explained that its participation in the now-terminated Gold for Oil programme did not involve any direct capital outlay from the fund. Instead, oil bulk distribution companies provided cedis to MIIF’s Trade Desk through the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors.

This arrangement reportedly generated about $650 million in foreign exchange between February and September 2024, which was used to support the payment of fuel imports.

Sources at the OSP told Citi News that Duodu is expected to report to investigators every Tuesday as the probe continues.

TEWU suspends strike to allow further engagement with gov’t

0

The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Ghana, has suspended its indefinite strike action, which began on 19th September 2025, following what it described as constructive engagements with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and other key stakeholders.

The union announced the suspension on Wednesday, 1st October, after nearly two weeks of industrial action involving staff of the Ghana Education Service, Public and Technical Universities, the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, and the Ghana Library Authority.

The strike, which was declared to press for the conclusion and signing of various Conditions of Service, attracted the attention of the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Jobs, the National Labour Commission, and the FWSC.

This led to a crucial meeting between TEWU leadership, FWSC, and employer institutions on 29 September 2025.

In a statement signed by TEWU’s General Secretary, King James Azortibah, the union described the meeting as “very constructive,” noting that all parties agreed to work towards an amicable resolution of the outstanding concerns. A follow-up meeting has been scheduled with the FWSC for Tuesday, 7th October 2025, to conclude negotiations and sign the relevant agreements.

“In view of these positive developments, TEWU has decided to suspend the indefinite strike with effect from Wednesday, 1st October 2025, to allow for further discussions and the implementation of the agreed terms,” the statement said.

All members have been directed to resume work by Thursday, 2nd October 2025, while those who travelled outside their duty stations are expected to return by Monday, 6th October 2025.

However, the union stressed that the decision amounts to a suspension, not a cancellation of the strike. It expressed the hope that the FWSC and employer institutions would honour their commitments to prevent a possible resumption of industrial action.

TEWU also cautioned against any form of victimisation of its members for participating in the strike. It assured members of its readiness to defend anyone subjected to unfair labour practices now or in the future.

The union expressed appreciation to heads of institutions and management teams who supported their efforts during the strike, acknowledging their shared commitment to delivering quality education.

It also commended its members, executives, monitoring teams, and the media for their unwavering support throughout the nine-day action.

TEWU reaffirmed its commitment to lawful and constructive engagement with government, while continuing to advocate for improved conditions of service for its members.

Former Minister of Energy, Boakye Agyarko, has expressed concern over what he described as excessive public exchanges within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), warning that such conduct is not in the interest of Ghanaians.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, Agyarko said ordinary citizens are more concerned about practical solutions to their daily challenges than constant political debates on radio and television.

“It’s not about the noisemaking. The noisemaking doesn’t impress Ghanaians; it rather irritates them. The ordinary Ghanaian just woke up looking for what to eat that morning, and politicians are on radio engaging in political cacophony. It doesn’t solve their problem. Our duty as politicians is to bring solutions to the people,” he said.

The former minister stated that he was ready to offer views on substantive issues such as youth unemployment, insisting that such conversations are more relevant than what he called “verbal political exchanges.”

Commenting on recent disagreements among party officials, Agyarko said certain matters should be dealt with privately rather than in the public domain.

He cited the exchanges between Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, and the General Secretary of the NPP, noting that Abronye could have responded privately instead of making a public statement.

Agyarko acknowledged that the NPP was facing difficult times but maintained that the situation should not become the norm.

Videos of businessman Nana Yaw Duodu, popularly known as Dr Sledge, making a lavish entrance at a past Rapperholic concert have resurfaced on social media following his recent arrest on corruption charges.

The now-trending video shows the Chief Executive Officer of Goldridge Refinery Ltd. arriving at the musical concert in a motorcade of luxury vehicles, reportedly including a Ferrari 458 Italia, a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, a Bentley Flying Spur, and a Mercedes-Maybach S-Class.

Dr Sledge was seen stepping out of one of the cars dressed in all black, accessorised with a bedazzled jacket, a gold chain, a gold wristwatch, and a gold walking stick, accompanied by a lady and a full entourage.

This display of opulence is now under public scrutiny following the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) arrest of Dr Sledge on September 30, 2025.

The arrest relates to suspected corruption and corruption-related offences linked to the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), particularly regarding the management of its gold trade programme.

Authorities suspect that the state lost over US$94 million due to Goldridge’s alleged failure to honour its obligations in trade transactions under the Gold for Forex and Gold for Oil initiatives.

This isn’t the first time Dr Sledge has been in the public eye for his extravagant spending. A previous video from 2019 also resurfaced, showing him purchasing the first copy of Shatta Wale’s Reign album for GH¢150,000 at a concert.

‘President Mahama’s UNGA speech holds no global relevance’

0

Dr Bernie Asher is a lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra Dr Bernie Asher is a lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra

A lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, Dr Bernie Asher, has downplayed the impact of President John Dramani Mahama’s address at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, stressing that such speeches carry little to no policy weight.

Speaking in an interview on Joy News and monitored by GhanaWeb on October 1, 2025, Dr Asher acknowledged Mahama’s strong delivery, describing him as an orator who effectively conveyed his sentiments.

However, he said Ghanaians should not be overly excited about the address.

“This forum is a free-for-all where every leader can say everything they want. These things don’t mean much. This is not policy. This is just a forum for people to rant, for presidents to say what they want on their mind. It carries no policy impact, there are no consequences of it, and nobody has to listen or act on it,” he said.

Dr Asher recalled how leaders like Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi and Cuba’s Fidel Castro once delivered marathon speeches at the Assembly that made no tangible impact on global policy.

He added that even in recent times, speeches by world leaders such as US President Donald Trump and the Israeli Prime Minister have been met with walkouts or dismissal.

Mahama’s UNGA 80 Address: Three bold statements that have won widespread plaudits

He emphasised that while Mahama’s delivery was commendable, the address should not be mistaken for an achievement.

“Let’s not trick ourselves that something very powerful has been achieved. Nothing has been achieved. This is just a speech,” Dr Asher reiterated.

President Mahama in his address at the UNGA pressed for permanent African representation on the Security Council with veto power, arguing that the current arrangement is outdated and unjust.

He also demanded reforms to the global financial system, which he said is “Rigged against Africa.”

The president also called for reparations for slavery and colonization, the return of stolen African artefacts, and a fairer share of natural resource benefits for African nations.

“We are tired of people extracting the most they can from us and offering the least in return,” he added.

Middlemen profiteering keeps urban food prices high – Eric Opoku

0

Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has accused middlemen of exploiting both farmers and consumers by profiteering from food distribution, despite significant drops in prices at the farm gates.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, Mr Opoku explained that farmers are currently selling food crops at far lower prices than at the start of the harvest season.

“When you go to the production point, the farmers are complaining that they were selling a truck of yams at GH¢7,000. When they started harvesting, it came down to GH¢4,000, and it is now hovering around GH¢3,000 and GH¢2,000 at the farm gate,” he revealed.

He noted that while prices in some urban areas have begun to fall, consumers are not fully benefiting from the reductions because middlemen are inflating prices during distribution.

“We have some people also posing as middlemen between the farmers and urban areas, and they are engaging in profiteering, trying to enjoy abnormal profit. They buy cheaply from the farmers and sell at ‘throat-cutting’ prices to the consumers. The prices are better than before,” he stated.

Mr Opoku further explained that shopping preferences also play a role in sustaining the price gap, with some urban dwellers opting for imported food items in malls rather than cheaper local produce in traditional markets.

“When you get to the mall, some of the food items are imported, and the prices cannot be compared to those in the local market now because the local ones are now cheaper than the imported ones,” he stressed.

The minister urged Ghanaians to support local production by choosing Ghana-made foods, saying it was the surest way to protect farmers, strengthen the economy, and reduce dependency on imports.

“We, as a government, have decided to produce to feed Ghanaians; they must reciprocate our gesture by eating Ghana for us,” he said.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu outlines why President Mahama’s UNGA speech made history

0

Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu

Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has hailed President John Dramani Mahama’s participation in the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as a “historic and highly successful” milestone that has strengthened Ghana’s place on the global stage.

Addressing the media in Accra, Ofosu (MP) said President Mahama’s speech at the General Assembly was widely regarded as one of the most outstanding of the session.

The President strongly reiterated Africa’s call for permanent representation on the UN Security Council and pressed for reparations for historical injustices arising from slavery and colonialism.

He also addressed pressing global challenges, including the Israel-Gaza conflict, urging an immediate end to hostilities and the protection of innocent lives.

Other key themes in his address included migration, climate change, and sustainable development.

Beyond his UNGA speech, President Mahama engaged in a series of high-level bilateral meetings, including discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron and UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

He also launched the Accra Reset, a bold initiative aimed at reclaiming Africa’s sovereignty in financing healthcare and development. The project has already gained international backing from figures such as former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

President Mahama further participated in the signing of a compact on Africa’s energy security, while attending other side events on climate change and related issues.

Promoting Ghana as an investment destination was another highlight of the trip.

At the NASDAQ headquarters in New York, he held a roundtable with international investors, assuring them of Ghana’s stability, safety, and profitability for business.

He also met members of the Ghanaian community in the U.S., listening to their concerns and pledging government support.

“This visit has placed Ghana at the centre of key international discussions and cemented our role as a credible and respected global player,” Ofosu concluded.

The most memorable match was theBlaugranas’ crazy comeback (6-1) in 2017 after losing0-4. The teams last met in the 2023-24 season: in thequarter-finals, Barcelona won 3-2 in the first leg, butParis Saint-Germain crushed their opponents away (4-1).

Hansi Flick’s second attempt

In his first season at Bayern Munich, the Germancoach won all the trophies and came close to repeatinghis success with Barcelona. However, in theChampions League semi-finals against Inter Milan, theCatalans were just a little unlucky.

Flick’s team is aiming to win the title at its secondattempt and is in excellent form. Barça have won 7 oftheir 8 games at the start of the season, including a victory over Newcastle United in the Champions League round 1 (2-1).

On Sunday, in the match against Real Sociedad, theBlaugranas’ leader, Lamine Yamal, returned frominjury and took just one minute to assist Robert Lewandowski’s winning goal.

We should also noteMarcus Rashford’s great form – the Englishman scored2 goals against Newcastle and has no intention ofslowing down. However, Raphinha, Fermín López andJoan García won’t be able to help Barcelona due toinjuries.

Difficult period for Paris Saint-Germain

The intense 2024-25 season has had a significant effecton Luis Enrique’s team. Today, the French giants can’tperform at their best due to the absence of their biggeststars.

The Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé andthe leader of the Parisians’ defense Marquinhos willdefinitely miss the match against the Catalans, whilethe participation of Vitinha, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Désiré Doué and João Neves is in doubt.

High education costs, cultural norms still block girls from school, experts warn

The Executive Director of Uwezo Uganda, Dr Gorreti Nakabugo, has said the high cost of education and harmful cultural practices remain huge barriers to girl-child education in Uganda and need urgent attention to reverse the situation.

“Though progress has been made over the past decade, girls in Uganda and across Sub-Saharan Africa are still faced with enormous challenges to enroll in and complete quality education. Poverty, harmful cultural norms, teenage pregnancies, child marriage, gender discrimination, and lack of safe learning environments are some of the barriers to girl-child education,” Dr Gorreti Nakabugo told journalists during a press conference in Kampala on September 30, ahead of the national conference What Works in Girls’ Education.

The conference, scheduled for October 1 to 3, 2025, under the theme Breaking Barriers, Building Benefits: Evidence and Action for Girls’ Education, will bring together experts from 20 countries.

According to Dr Nakabugo, the cost of education is a key determinant of whether children enroll, stay in school, and complete their education cycle.

“Girls are forced to drop out especially at the lower levels of education, which translates into a vicious cycle of poverty. We have eight to eleven themes under which different researchers and practitioners are going to present papers during the conference. One of them is the issue of policy and financing,” she said.

Despite Uganda’s free education policy, extra charges, such as contributions to teachers’ salaries even when they are on government payroll, remain a challenge. In addition, many parents cannot afford the fees charged by private schools.

Available records indicate that at least 30 percent of parents in Uganda borrow money to pay school fees for their children.

Associate Professor George Wilson Kasule, Dean of the School of Education at Kyambogo University, said parents and guardians also have a responsibility to ensure children stay in school.

Mr Emmy Zoomlamai Okello, Country Lead for the Regional Education Learning Initiative (RELI) -Africa Uganda Chapter, said misinterpretation of the Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Secondary Education (USE) policies by leaders has misled parents.

“The leaders are preaching to the parents that we have free education, but this is universal education, which is for everyone. What needs to be done is to engage parents more closely so that they understand what the policy means when it comes to universal education. That alone is costing the country much in terms of children not learning and lagging behind in some of the competencies in literacy and numeracy at the foundation level,” he said.

Prof Richardo Sabates from the University of Cambridge said intentional collaborative efforts must be promoted to address barriers in the education system to ensure both boys and girls access quality education needed to drive human capital development.
