Ghana coach Otto Addo names TOP GPL striker in Black Stars squad for Unity Cup

0

Berekum Chelsea captain Stephen Amankona has reportedly received a call-up to the Black Stars ahead of the upcoming Four-Nation Tournament in London this May.

Amankona’s inclusion comes on the back of a stellar season in the Ghana Premier League, where he has been a standout performer with his creativity, leadership, and eye for goal.

His consistent form has not gone unnoticed by Blacks Stars technical team, who are looking to blend experience with emerging local talent for the tournament.

This marks a major milestone for the forward, who has long been on the radar of national team watchers.

Meanwhile, the official squad list is expected to be announced in coming weeks.

Five celebrities who didn’t nail the TGMAs red carpet look

From L to R: Joshua, Okyeame Kwame and King Promise on the red carpet From L to R: Joshua, Okyeame Kwame and King Promise on the red carpet

The red carpet is a place where stars either shine or stumble when it comes to fashion.

At the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards, held at the Grand Arena, several celebrities brought bold statements to the red carpet, but not all were hits.

While many dazzled with glamorous looks, a few missed the mark with outfits that either felt too casual, overly theatrical, or simply out of place for such a high-profile event.

Here are five Ghanaian celebrities whose red-carpet choices raised more eyebrows than applause.

Keche (Joshua)

Joshua of Keche fame, stirred online buzz with an outfit that defied red-carpet expectations. He sported a black singlet layered under a shiny gold-toned long-sleeved shirt, which he left unbuttoned.

He completed the look with flared black pants and dark sunglasses.

In an interview, Joshua revealed that the entire outfit was thrifted from Kantamanto.

While the look had personality, critics have argued that it lacked the polish and sophistication typically associated with red carpet fashion.

Okyeame Kwame

Never one to shy away from a bold statement, Okyeame Kwame showed up in a pharaoh-inspired ensemble that looked straight out of a historical epic.

His outfit featured gold and royal blue fabrics, elaborate metallic details, and a towering regal headdress with a cobra motif.

Though visually striking, the look came off as more costume party than red carpet worthy. While his intention to pay homage to African royalty was clear, it didn’t quite align with the refined elegance usually expected at the TGMAs.

King Promise

Known for his effortless cool, King Promise took a laid-back approach to the red carpet. He wore blue denim jeans, an ash-coloured jacket, and added a splash of colour with a wine-coloured flying tie. Accessories included dark sunglasses and a round cap.

While stylish in a streetwear sense, the outfit lacked the formality and flair usually expected at such a star-studded event. It was a missed opportunity to elevate his fashion game for the occasion.

Archipalago

Archipalago arrived in an all-white ensemble that leaned more toward club night than red carpet. He wore a white vest, white jeans, and white Air Force sneakers, paired with dark sunglasses and a black cap.

His Gucci belt was prominently displayed, adding to the party-ready vibe.

While clean and coordinated, the outfit lacked the sophistication typically required for a red-carpet appearance, coming off as overly casual.

Kojo Blak

Kojo Blak opted for a coffee-brown outfit, featuring matching pants and a jacket layered over a white shirt. He added a flying tie in the same brown shade, along with dark sunglasses and a newsboy cap.

Surprisingly, he completed the look with a backpack, a rare and questionable choice for such an event.

While the colour coordination showed some thought, the overall styling, and particularly the backpack, felt out of place for a formal red carpet.

The 2016 murder of Cpl Essel and the 8-year-long chase that led to the arrest of ‘Baby Last’

0

General Corporal Frank Essel, a driver with the SWAT Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service, was brutally gunned down on May 19, 2016, during an armed robbery at the Open Space Hotel in Denchemuoso, near Kumasi.

The cold-blooded murder shocked the nation and set off an eight-year manhunt that culminated in the arrest of the prime suspect, Michael Owusu Ansah, alias “Baby Last,” on April 2, 2025.

The night of the murder

The events of May 19, 2016, unfolded around 9 PM when a gang of masked armed robbers stormed the Open Space Hotel.

According to police reports, the robbers demanded that two receptionists lead them to guest rooms to rob patrons. When the receptionists hesitated, the assailants shot one of them, prompting the other to flee.

In the chaos, Corporal Essel, who was seated in his Benz vehicle on the hotel premises, was fatally shot behind the wheel.

His police uniform, hanging in the front seat, was visible, though it remains unclear whether he was deliberately targeted or caught in the crossfire.

A police search later found his bullet-riddled body, leading to public and institutional outrage and grief across the Ashanti Region.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command, under intense pressure, vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Early breakthroughs of female mastermind arrest

In the immediate aftermath, the police launched a vigorous investigation.

On June 6, 2016, the police arrested one Abena Serwaa, a 28-year-old woman alleged to be the mastermind behind the robbery.

Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, ACP Ampofo Duku, revealed that Serwaa had hired two other suspects to execute the heist.

Items recovered from her included GH¢1,487, suspected marijuana, and medical supplies.

However, the two hired accomplices, including the suspected triggerman, Michael Owusu Ansah, alias “Baby Last,” evaded capture, plunging the investigation into a prolonged stalemate.

Ansah’s ability to remain at large for nearly a decade frustrated law enforcement and the public.

Reports indicate he continued his criminal activities, allegedly orchestrating robberies at Denchemuoso, Atwima-Techiman, Asuoyeboah, and surrounding areas.

The case remained a priority for the Ashanti Regional Police, with DSP Godwin Ahianyo, the Public Relations Officer, noting that Ansah had been on the wanted list since 2016, during the tenure of Commissioner (Rtd) Kofi Boakye.

A breakthrough after 8-long-years

The tide turned on April 2, 2025, when the Police Intelligence Directorate, acting on a tip-off, apprehended Ansah, now 32, along with four accomplices: Emmanuel Owusu (alias Cassidy, 30), Maxwell Gyimah (alias Nana Kwame, 31), Sudais Oxford Ntiamoah (alias The Man Sudais), and Rhano Okyere (alias Demon).

A sixth suspect, identified only as Abedi, remains at large. The arrests, announced by the Ashanti Regional Police Command, marked a significant victory in one of the region’s longest-running criminal investigations.

Ansah, according to the police, confessed to his involvement in the 2016 robbery and murder, as well as other crimes across Kumasi.

Police recovered GH¢66,950, suspected to be proceeds from drug sales, along with other exhibits.

On May 13, 2025, the five suspects were arraigned before the Atasomanso Circuit Court and remanded in custody, with their next court appearance scheduled for June 4, 2025.

BoG’s open market operation yields GH¢4.61 billion at 27.9% interest rate

Bank of Ghana's new headquarters Bank of Ghana’s new headquarters

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has raised GH¢4.61 billion through the issuance of 56-day bills in its latest Open Market Operation (OMO), reinforcing its commitment to mop up excess liquidity and stabilise short-term interest rates .

The auction, held on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, saw the short-term instruments priced at a yield of 27.9%, marginally below the central bank’s current benchmark policy rate of 28%.

While the BoG did not disclose the total bids received or its intended auction size, market watchers have described the outcome as broadly positive, pointing to sustained investor appetite for high-yield cedi-denominated assets in a tightening monetary landscape.

The short-dated bills are part of the BoG’s broader toolkit for guiding interbank lending rates and anchoring inflation expectations.

The move also underscores the central bank’s continued vigilance in managing systemic liquidity without derailing its inflation-targeting stance.

The GH¢4.61 billion raised through this issuance is expected to contribute towards short-term government financing needs, reinforcing the ongoing coordination between fiscal and monetary authorities in managing Ghana’s post-crisis recovery.

SML’s mandate in petroleum, minerals sectors still suspended

0

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has responded to media reports suggesting that Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd. (SML) has been granted an expanded mandate to oversee revenue assurance in Ghana’s upstream petroleum and solid minerals sectors.

The GRA categorically stated that the suspension of SML’s services in the upstream petroleum and mineral sectors, which was instituted pending further review in April 2024, remains in effect.

In a press release dated May 14, 2025, the GRA expressed concern over publications in various online news outlets and print media, including Business and Financial Times and Graphic Online, which claimed that SML had commenced new operations in these sectors.

The authority emphasised that no directive has been issued for SML to activate or resume operations under the 2023 Consolidation of Revenue Assurance Services Contract related to these sectors.

“GRA has not instructed SML to activate or resume operations under the 2023 Consolidation of Revenue Assurance Services Contract covering those sectors,” the statement noted.

Reaffirming its position, the GRA assured stakeholders and the general public of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding national revenue with integrity and transparency and dismissed the media reports as inaccurate.

Ghana falls to 20th position in Africa with lowest fuel price despite cedi gains

0

Ghana has been ranked the 20th cheapest country for petrol in Africa, according to the latest update from GlobalPetrolPrices.com. As of May 2025, the average pump price of petrol in Ghana stood at $1.211 per litre.

This represents a drop of seven places compared to April 2024, when Ghana ranked 13th on the continent and 48th globally. The country now places 77th in the world.

The fall in ranking comes despite the Ghanaian cedi’s recent appreciation against major international currencies and a decline in global crude oil prices. Brent crude is currently trading at $65.89 per barrel, driven by reduced global demand and a stable outlook for supply.

Libya remains the global leader in low petrol prices

Libya continues to offer the cheapest petrol worldwide, priced at just $0.027 per litre. Angola follows with $0.327, while Algeria ranks third with $0.344 per litre. Egypt ($0.377), Nigeria ($0.537), and Sudan ($0.700) also offer significantly lower prices than Ghana.

Other African nations ahead of Ghana in terms of petrol affordability include Tunisia, Liberia, Ethiopia, and Gabon.

Domestic fuel market still faces challenges

Although local fuel prices have declined moderately in recent weeks, Ghana’s significant drop in the affordability rankings suggests underlying structural inefficiencies or pricing rigidities in the domestic fuel market.

Further price drops expected

The Chief Executive of the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC), Dr Riverson Oppong, has indicated that fuel prices are expected to decline further from Friday, 16 May 2025. He attributed the expected reduction to “favourable exchange rate movements and falling benchmark prices.”

Police Arrest ‘Killers’ Of Aflao MoMo Vendor

The suspects

THE VOLTA Regional Police Intelligence Department (RPID), in collaboration with the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (SWAT) of the Ghana Police Service, the Operation Motherland Taskforce, and the community watch committee ‘ACTION NOW’, have arrested four suspects in connection with the murder of a mobile money (MoMo) vendor in Aflao.

The suspects—Michael Sewornu, 34; Korku Agboada, 43; Atsu Agbagla, 36; and Utsuku Onyeso, 22, a Nigerian national—were apprehended during a joint intelligence-led operation.

They are currently in police custody assisting with investigation. On April 28, 2025, at approximately 6:15pm, five unidentified assailants attacked Christopher Ahordo, a mobile money vendor, at Gbagblakope, near the Diamond Cement factory in Aflao.

Ahordo was shot during the attack and died at the scene, while the assailants made off with a bag believed to contain money.

A statement issued by DSP Felix Danku of the Police Public Affairs Unit of the Volta Region, announced that the suspects will be arraigned before the court. We’re guiding the cedi to its true level – Isaac Adongo

0

Bank of Ghana Board Member Isaac Adongo says the recent calm in the cedi’s volatility is the result of a deliberate and coordinated policy move, not a fluke.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday, May 14, he said the Nana Akufo-Addo era of reckless monetary management is over, and Ghanaians are now seeing what leadership with discipline looks like under President John Mahama and Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson.

“What is happening now is an intentional policy implementation,” the Bolga Central MP explained.

“It is a complementary effort from the Ministry of Finance and the central bank. The central bank is doing its bit, and government, under the leadership of the Finance Minister, is also doing its bit, so the two of them are collaborating.”

When host Evans Mensah asked if the cedi had now been “arrested,” a reference to then opposition leader Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2014 claim, Mr. Adongo responded sarcastically.

“No, we have not arrested the cedi. The man who arrested it is out there. What is happening to the cedi now is that we are gradually massaging it to find its true level.”

For the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Finance Committee, this isn’t about grand gestures or media gimmicks. It’s about sending the right message to the market and applying pressure where it matters.

“We are trying to let them know—‘Hey, we are in Ghana now. Akufo-Addo is gone. Bawumia is gone. It is now Ato Forson and John Mahama who are here. If you misbehave, we will deal with you.’ And they are beginning to say, ‘yes sir, yes sir.’ That’s what we are doing.”

Isaac Adongo said the priority is not to chase unrealistic exchange rate targets but to secure lasting macroeconomic balance.

“What we are looking for is stability, not a quantum jump of the cedi from ¢15 to ¢3. What we are doing now is to get the cedi to find the level that supports the economy.”

He explained that while the exchange rate calm is part of the immediate relief strategy, the broader plan is to tackle inflation at its roots.

“This is an initial remedy to give Ghanaians some relief,” he said, “whilst the fruit that we really want to bear is to tackle head-on food inflation.”

Ghana Water Limited owes ECG GH₵1bn – Energy Minister reveals

0

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has disclosed that Ghana Water Limited owes the Electricity Company of Ghana approximately GH₵1billion for unpaid electricity consumption over the past seven months.

The Minister, in his opening remarks at a meeting between the Energy Committee of Parliament and power sector agencies, directed the ECG to urgently recover the debt to enhance their operations, citing the financial challenges it poses to the ECG.

“I was listening to the news at 10 pm, where Ghana Water made a complaint that, because of some erratic power situation, they are unable to supply adequately. I empathise with them, and I think that what we have inherited, we should improve on it.

“But the other notice is that Ghana Water hasn’t paid any GH₵1 for seven months. We need that money to stabilise the power. If you don’t pay GH₵1 for seven months and it compounds to GH₵1 billion, the power sector will not be stable. The private sector or ordinary citizens alone cannot be made to shoulder the burden,” he said

The minister also announced that Karpower has served notice to shut down its plant on May 18 due to the government’s debt of over $400 million.

“Karpower has just sent us a letter that by the 18th, they will shut down the plant because we owe them more than $400 million. IPPs alone, we owe them $1.7 billion.

Ghana’s Mahama courts oil investors, pushes for aggressive crude oil extraction

0

Ghana is urging investors to help boost oil production as the global push for decarbonization threatens to leave fossil fuel assets stranded.

President John Mahama made the appeal during the Africa CEO Forum held on Tuesday in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

“Oil is in transition and so anybody who has any assets should be pumping like there’s no tomorrow,” he said, signalling Ghana’s readiness to welcome investors with open arms. “We’re rolling out the red carpet for anyone ready to drill.”

Ghana’s oil production has declined steadily over the last five years, largely due to limited investment in new exploration and field development.

Mahama attributed the decline in output to regulatory uncertainty, which he said drove some major players away.

“ENI was held in contempt and they had to move all their expatriate management to Cote d’Ivoire,” he noted, adding that now the company was “back and they are drilling again”.

Mahama’s call to action echoes a growing sentiment among oil-producing nations, including recent appeals by U.S. leaders for increased domestic output.

OPEC, too, has raised production levels, contributing to a roughly 13% drop in Brent crude prices this year, now hovering around $65.3 per barrel, per Bloomberg.

While advocating for increased oil drilling, Mahama emphasised that Ghana must stay committed to its clean energy targets. He noted that under the country’s Renewable Energy Act, at least 10% of the national energy mix is mandated to come from renewable sources.

Elected in December, Mahama has pledged to revive Ghana’s struggling economy, which is still reeling from a debt crisis and rising cost of living. Reflecting on past government priorities, he said, “The environment got a bit toxic. The government did not seem to prioritise the sector.”

However, oga Montgomery add say almost 10% of all di visas wey di UK goment bin give pipo for di past two years na to Nigerians, and dis na sign of di important links betwin di two kontris, “and we hope say e go be for mutual benefits”.

Nigeria economic reforms dey work

For di matter or trade relations betwin Nigeria and di UK, oga Montgomery say di new economic reforms wey di goment of Nigeria don put in place dey work, and dis policies don make di kontri “more investable”.

“Di UK see Nigeria as an increasingly important kontri, as an increasingly large future market for UK trade investment sake of di reforms and di population growth for di kontri,” Montgomery tok.

“I realise say some of dis reforms dey painful for di ordinary pipo, inflation still dey high for di mid 20% terriotory, e go take time to bring dat rate down, but we dey see very good prospects for di rate to come down in di coming months and years.”

Montgomery also cite di World Bank economic update for Nigeria wey tok say di naira don dey more stable, foreign exchange reserves don go up well-well, and goment revenue collection don increase by almost 90%, and di growth rate don tip up from two percent in 2015 to about 3.5% currently and rising.

“We dey also monitor di second phase of dis economic reforms, di new tax legislation wey go simplify costs and predictability for businesses,” e tok.

To boost trade betwin Nigeria and di UK, Montgomery say both kontris bin sign a roadmap – di Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership (Etip) – for November 2024, wey be di pillar of di cooperation betwin Nigeria and di UK.

Based on dis Etip, di UK goment don remove tariffs from more dan 3000 products from Nigeria to encourage Nigeria exports to di UK.

Di UK goment dey also assist Nigeria significantly to reduce insecurity for di kontri, thru collaborations wit di office of di National Security Adviser, and also thru humanitarian assistance for di northeast region wia insecurity dey highest, Montgomery tok.

Also, Mark Smithson, di country director for di UK department for business and trade, tok say di current value of di trade relationship betwin Nigeria and di UK na about 7.2 billion pounds.

E say Nigeria na di second largest trading partner for di UK and also di kontri largest export market, although ova 90% of wetin Nigeria dey export to di UK na hydrocarbons – Crude oil.

Smithson say UK dey import more dan six billion pounds or fertilizer evri year, and Nigeria na di 10th largest exporter of fertilizer for di world but na only small quantity of Nigeria fertilizer dey go to di UK.

“Big opportunity dey for Nigerian businesses to export more products di UK,” Smithson tok.

E also point out flower exportation as anoda opportunity wey Nigerian businesses fit explore as di UK dey import several billion pounds worth of flowers evri year.

Samuel Kofi Agyemang

The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) is intensifying efforts to establish a minimum wage for musicians, a move aimed at ensuring fair remuneration and improving livelihoods within the industry.

MUSIGA is currently in the process of engaging Kingsley Ofei-Nkansah, popularly known as Sax, as a consultant to support this critical initiative.

In addition, MUSIGA has held productive meetings with the owners of +233, Ghana’s leading venue for live performances, to discuss the implementation of the minimum wage.

These engagements mark important steps in MUSIGA’s strategy to collaborate with key industry stakeholders to secure sustainable and fair compensation for musicians.

The union’s efforts come amid ongoing conversations sparked by statements from prominent religious leaders.

The Founder of the Lighthouse Chapel, Rev. Dag Heward-Mills, and Rev. Elisha Amoako have both commented on the issue of compensating musicians for their skills and contributions.

It’s against this backdrop that establishing a minimum wage based on fair remuneration is the way forward for the Ghanaian music industry.

General Secretary of MUSIGA, Samuel Kofi Agyemang, stated: “Our discussions with Kingsley Ofei-Nkansah and the owners of +233 demonstrate our commitment to securing fair pay for musicians.

“The statements from respected leaders like Rev. Dag Heward-Mills and Rev. Elisha Amoako reinforce the necessity of this initiative. MUSIGA is dedicated to ensuring that musicians receive the recognition and compensation they deserve through a structured minimum wage system.”

MUSIGA continues to build on its collaborations with international experts and local stakeholders to develop a robust framework that guarantees fair wages and fosters a sustainable music industry in Ghana.

Supreme Court must be diligent to guide future cases – Baffour Awuah

0

Lawyer and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has called on the Supreme Court of Ghana to undertake more thorough and forward-looking constitutional interpretations in order to better guide the nation’s legal and democratic development.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, the MP emphasised that while no constitutional framework is perfect from the outset, it is the responsibility of the judiciary to progressively interpret and strengthen it over time.

“As a people, we must appreciate that nothing is perfect from the beginning. I was not expecting a flawless constitution, but I did expect a progressive society and a progressive Supreme Court. One that, when given the opportunity to interpret provisions, would offer a more forward-thinking and constructive perspective.”

Mr Baffour Awuah pointed to Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution as an example of an area where, in his view, the Supreme Court had fallen short.

“Let me be quoted correctly: I believe that on the issue of Article 146, it is the Supreme Court of the Republic of Ghana that has disappointed us—not the framers of the Constitution.”

He recalled former Chief Justice Madam Sophia Akuffo’s own remarks about the deficiencies in Article 146 and drew comparisons with other jurisdictions.

“In the United States, they do not have a constitution as voluminous as ours, yet theirs is interpreted in a way that gives it meaning and allows it to evolve. That’s why I like to reference the idea that a constitution is a living organism. When the opportunity comes, interpretation must be comprehensive; that is how growth happens.”

He highlighted three notable cases to illustrate his concerns: the Attorney-General v. Ghana Bar Association case, the Agyei Twum case, and the Thierry case.

In his view, the Court’s approach across these rulings lacked consistency and depth.

“In the Ghana Bar Association case, a certain perspective was taken. Then in Agyei Twum, the Court went a step further. But in the Thirry case, the Court did not even base its opinion on ratio decidendi, but on obiter dictum regarding what should be done with prima facie determinations.”

“These three cases clearly show that comprehensive work was not done by the Supreme Court in respect of Article 146. That’s why we are where we are today,” he said.

Mr Baffour Awuah stressed that the Court must ensure its rulings are grounded in thorough analysis that will stand the test of time.

“When cases come to the Supreme Court for determination, the Court must, with all due respect, do a thorough job by considering the implications for the future. Where we are today should inspire us to build stronger legal interpretations that guide our country forward.”

Beyond the judiciary, the MP urged fellow politicians to adopt a more nationalistic and holistic approach to governance.

“Let us, as politicians, begin to look at issues from a national perspective. When we are in office, it is for just four years. Tomorrow, the people of Manhyia South may decide that I should not return. That’s why we must act beyond partisan interests and think about the national good.”

He called for a more structured and transparent approach to handling matters related to Article 146.

“It is inappropriate for committees to create procedures on an ad hoc basis. There should be proper regulations, clearly established and known ahead of time, to govern such proceedings. That is the right and fair approach,” he concluded.

The High Court in Tamale has convicted six individuals for their involvement in a payroll corruption scheme that exploited the Ghana Education Service (GES) through the use of ghost names and fraudulent salary payments.

The convictions were secured under the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) plea bargaining framework, which facilitated full restitution and reparation to the State.

The convicted individuals, comprising school administrators, payroll officers, and accountants, were found to have illegally validated and reactivated the salaries of a teacher who had long vacated his post.

The convicted individuals are:

  • Tahidu Yakubu, a former teacher at Balogu M/A Junior High School (Balogu JHS) in Yendi.
  • Abdulai Abubakar Sadic, the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Database (IPPD) Coordinator for the Yendi Municipality.
  • Sammy Suuk, the Schools Improvement Support Officer (SISO) for the Yendi North Circuit.
  • Mohammed Yusif Jay, former Headmaster of Balogu JHS.
  • Stafford Korletey Azudey-Barres, an Assistant Chief Account Technician at the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department in Accra.
  • Osman Issahaku, the current Headmaster of Balogu JHS, is responsible for validating teacher salaries at the school.

Their actions, according to the OSP, led to the wrongful disbursement of over GHc86,000, all of which have now been recovered. In total, the OSP has retrieved GHc106,319.64 in connection with the case.

The OSP confirmed that this case is part of a broader, ongoing investigation into payroll-related corruption, and several additional suspects are currently being pursued.

In a statement, the Office indicated that it currently has six other criminal trials underway in Accra, Tamale, and Kumasi as part of its intensified efforts to hold public officers accountable and safeguard public funds.

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a new partnership with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) to strengthen Ghana’s capacity to manage and respond to health emergencies.

The announcement follows a recent meeting between President Mahama and Dr John Nkengasong, Director General of the Africa CDC, along with officials from the African Union.

The meeting focused on public health readiness in Ghana and the wider West African sub-region.

A key outcome of the engagement was signing a memorandum of understanding between the Government of Ghana and the Africa CDC.

The agreement covers data sharing and cross-border disease surveillance and is expected to improve the country’s epidemic intelligence and early warning systems.

In a Facebook post shared on Thursday, May 15, 2025, President Mahama described the agreement as part of Ghana’s ongoing efforts to prepare for future health threats.

“Ghana is committed to learning from past experiences and preparing for future health challenges,” the president wrote. He also acknowledged the support Ghana has received from the Africa CDC in recent years.

Also present at the meeting was Dr Jean Kaseya, who spoke about the importance of building self-sufficiency in healthcare systems across Africa.

President Mahama agreed, stating that closer cooperation with institutions such as the Africa CDC will help make Ghana and the continent more resilient in the face of emerging health threats.

GFA Fines Nations FC’s Emmanuel Annor For Religious Message In Goal Celebration

Emmanuel Annor

THE GHANA Football Association (GFA) has fined Nations FC forward Emmanuel Annor GH₵500 for misconduct after he removed his jersey to reveal a religious message during a Ghana Premier League clash against Asante Kotoko.

Annor, who scored in the high-stakes match, unveiled an undershirt bearing the words “I belong to Jesus,” prompting disciplinary action from the GFA.

In a statement released on May 13, 2025, the Disciplinary Committee stated, “The player was found guilty of displaying a religious message on his undergarment after removing his shirt in celebration.”

While acknowledging the personal nature of such messages, the GFA emphasised that league regulations prohibit the display of religious or political messages during matches to maintain neutrality and uniformity across all fixtures.

In addition to the fine, Annor received a stern warning. The committee cautioned that any future infractions could result in harsher penalties, including suspension.

The incident has reignited discussions around the balance between personal expression and professional rules in football, with fans split between supporting Annor’s public display of faith and upholding the league’s standards.

Group files suit at Supreme Court to halt removal of suspended CJ

0

A civil society organisation, the Centre for Citizenship, Constitutional and Electoral Systems, has filed a suit at the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the removal process involving suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.

Chief Justice Torkonoo was suspended by President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, after a prima facie case was established against her. The action followed petitions submitted by private citizen Daniel Ofori, senior police officer Ayamga Akolgo, and the civic advocacy group Shining Stars of Ghana.

In its writ, the group is asking the Supreme Court to declare that the President’s response to the three petitions seeking the Chief Justice’s removal was unconstitutional.

The group argues that the President’s action violated key provisions of the 1992 Constitution, particularly Articles 17(1)–(3), 23, 296, and 146(1)–(4) and (6).

According to the group, the procedure lacked due process, and failed to uphold the principles of fairness, non-discrimination, and lawful administrative conduct as enshrined in the Constitution.

This legal action introduces a new dimension to the ongoing controversy over the Chief Justice’s suspension and fuels the wider national conversation about judicial independence and constitutional accountability.

Meanwhile, a five-member committee set up by President Mahama to investigate the petitions against Chief Justice Torkonoo is expected to begin its hearings today, Thursday, May 15, 2025. The committee is chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang and was constituted under Article 146(6) of the Constitution, following consultations with the Council of State.

Earlier, on May 6, 2025, the Supreme Court, in a 3–2 majority ruling, dismissed an application that sought to halt the removal process and revoke the Chief Justice’s suspension.

The majority opinion, delivered by Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, along with Justices Yonny Kulendi and Amadu Tanko, rejected the injunction request. Justices Henrietta Mensah Bonsu and Ernest Gaewu dissented.

The court is expected to release its full judgment and reasoning on May 21, 2025.

Ghana News Agency embarks on major Head Office renovation

0

By Kodjo Adams

Accra, May 15, GNA – The Ghana News Agency (GNA) has commenced a comprehensive renovation of its Head Office in Accra as part of an ongoing operational restructuring initiative, funded by the African Development Bank.

The funding is from a grant facility of $31.34 million, which comprises $28.5 million from the AfDB and $2.8 million from the Ghana Government.

The rehabilitation works, which began on Monday, May 12, on the executive wing, are scheduled for completion in December 2025.

Similar renovation projects are also ongoing at the Agency’s offices in Tema, Tamale, and Takoradi.

Mr Joseph Baffoe, the Director of Administration at the GNA, said the current project followed the successful renovation of the Upper East Regional Office in Bolgatanga and the Volta Regional Office in Ho.

He noted that the Bolgatanga renovation was made possible with financial support from Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited, a Chinese mining firm, while the Ho office upgrade was financed through the Agency’s Internally Generated Funds (IGF).

Mr Baffoe described the exercise as a “major rehabilitation” aimed at equipping GNA’s facilities with the requisite infrastructure and digital tools to meet the evolving demands of the modern global news environment.

He said the renovation forms part of the Post COVID-19 Skills Development and Productivity Enhancement Programme – a five-year initiative supported by a grant facility of $31.34 million.

The funding comprises $28.5 million from the African Development Bank (AfDB) and $2.8 million from the Government of Ghana.

Mr Baffoe said the programme also included the procurement of modern mass communication equipment, staff training in digital media technologies, and a review of the GNA’s establishment law to align with contemporary media practices.

He expressed optimism that the project would be completed within schedule and provide a befitting working environment for staff to effectively execute the Agency’s mandate of delivering credible news to the public.

Rawlings fails coup attempt against Akuffo-led SMC

Rawlings (with a microphone) and other junior officers staged a coup in 1979 to take power Rawlings (with a microphone) and other junior officers staged a coup in 1979 to take power

On May 15, 1979, a charismatic and outspoken junior officer in the Ghana Air Force, Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, led an audacious but unsuccessful coup attempt against the Supreme Military Council (SMC) government, headed by General Frederick WK Akuffo.

The failed putsch marked a pivotal moment in Ghana’s political history and set the stage for Rawlings’ eventual rise to power.

The 1970s were a period of economic hardships and political instability in Ghana.

Successive military regimes, including the SMC, which had been in power since 1972, struggled to address rampant inflation, unemployment, and widespread corruption.

General Akuffo, who assumed leadership of the SMC in 1978 after deposing General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong, inherited a nation grappling with discontent.

His administration’s attempts at economic reforms and plans for a transition to civilian rule under a “Union Government” failed to quell public frustration.

Rawlings, then 31, had gained a reputation as a fiery critic of the military elite, accusing them of mismanagement and corruption.

On May 15, 1979, he and a group of junior officers and enlisted men attempted to seize control of the government.

The plot, however, was poorly coordinated and quickly thwarted by loyalist forces. Rawlings and his co-conspirators were arrested and detained to face a court-martial.

Far from fading into obscurity, the failed coup propelled Rawlings into the national spotlight.

His outspoken defense during the subsequent public trial resonated with a good section of the Ghanaian populace, who felt disillusioned with the status quo.

Rawlings condemned the SMC’s leadership, famously stating that the military hierarchy had betrayed the nation.

His trial, tagged by critics as intended to suppress dissent, instead amplified his popularity, particularly among the youth and lower ranks of the military.

The events of May 15, 1979, were a precursor to a more successful uprising.

On June 4, 1979, less than three weeks later, sympathetic junior officers and soldiers freed Rawlings from prison, launching a second coup that toppled the Akuffo regime.

The Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC), with Rawlings as its leader, assumed power, promising to root out corruption and pave the way for democratic elections.

The AFRC’s brief rule was marked by controversial “house-cleaning” exercises, including the execution of senior military officers, including Akuffo and Acheampong, which remain divisive in Ghana’s historical memory.

Rawlings’ actions, though initially unsuccessful, laid the groundwork for his emergence as a transformative figure in Ghanaian politics, leading to his later presidency from 1981 to 2001.

Ghanaians will soon take a train from Accra to Lagos – Peter Amewu

Former Minister of Railway Development, John Peter Amewu Former Minister of Railway Development, John Peter Amewu

The former Minister of Railway Development, John Peter Amewu, stated in May 2024 that railway networks connecting Ghana to neighboring countries were under development.

He announced that Ghanaians would soon be able to travel by train from Accra to Lagos.

The Minister of Railway Development, John Peter Amewu, has outlined the government’s commitment to connecting railway networks to neighbouring countries.

The sector minister, Peter Amewu, said the ambitious plans to modernise and expand the railway network across the ECOWAS bloc are on course.

Speaking at the 2025 Africa Prosperity Dialogues launch in Accra, he stated that they have developed feasibility studies to cater to the Trans-ECOWAS line, which runs from Lomé straight to Ivory Coast.

He indicated that one of the novel projects that could have surprised the African continent is the joint development train project initiated by President Akufo Addo and his counterpart in Burkina Faso.

This project would have operated from Tema through Mpakadan, the Volta Region, Tamale, Paga, and all the way to Burkina Faso, but the project, unfortunately, stalled due to a military takeover and change in government in Burkina Faso.

He mentioned that one of the difficulties in implementing such projects is the Public-Private Partnership (PPP).

The Hohoe MP indicated that the viability gap alone identified within that project was in excess of $1.2 billion.

He therefore assured that a train from Ghana to Nigeria is possible if the government closes the viability gap.

“Traveling by train from Ghana to Nigeria is possible; we’ve started constructing a railway from Ghana to Burkina Faso, so why not Nigeria? As and when we expand, and there is a lot of voting power there, it can be done,” he said.

Ghanaians gave their lives to John Mahama in the 2024 Election

The Founder of Perez Chapel International, Archbishop Charles Agyinasare, has asserted that the outcome of the 2024 general elections was a strong message from Ghanaians.

He indicated that Ghanaians making John Dramani Mahama president again and giving him a two-thirds majority in Parliament was an indication that they are literally placing their lives in the hands of the president.

He said that the two-thirds majority Ghanaians gave to Mahama means that nothing can stop him from implementing all of his campaign promises.

The pastor, however, cautioned President Mahama against taking the will of the people for granted.

“If you have 2/3 of Parliament, it means that you can do anything at all you want. So, what Ghanaians were telling him was, we are giving you our lives. What you want to do, we don’t want you to have obstacles.

“Any law you want to pass, we want you to be able to pass it. But there are two things. When you have that kind of power, it can either get into your head, because it is said that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely,” he said.

He added; “Or it can make you sober to see that these people have given me their lives, let me do everything to protect them and to lift them up. I’ll reiterate that to him, that he shouldn’t take what we did this last election as Ghanaians for granted.”

King Promise

Reigning Artiste of the Year at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Awards (TGMA), King Promise, has declared that his success is rooted in authenticity, not in chasing trends or viral hits.

In an interview on Hitz FM following his recent victory at the TGMAs, the ‘Perfect Combi’ hitmaker opened up about the award’s significance and the philosophy behind his music-making process.

“I like this feeling,” King Promise said, referring to his win. “It’s not even about validation. It’s also about, like I said, your people recognising you and crowning you. I feel that moment is something special, and I would have shot myself in the foot if I didn’t push further.”

When asked what distinguishes him from his peers in the music industry, the award-winning singer emphasised his commitment to staying true to himself.

“What sets me apart is just being myself. Just making music that I love. I don’t go to the studio thinking, ‘I have to make a hit today.’ I don’t follow trends,” he stated.

King Promise added that while he enjoys the creative process, his work is deeply intentional and guided by a clear artistic direction.

“I just go to the studio to make music that feels real. I try to enjoy what I do, but I’m also very intentional with it. There’s a direction to everything I do, and I think that direction is what sets me apart,” he explained.

The win at the TGMAs marks a significant moment in King Promise’s career, affirming his belief that authenticity resonates with audiences—and pays off in the long run.

No ban on over-the-counter dollar withdrawals – John Awuah

The Ghana Association of Banks has refuted claims suggesting an imminent restriction on over-the-counter (OTC) withdrawals of foreign currencies, particularly U.S. dollars, from banks and financial institutions in Ghana.

This clarification follows recent comments by Isaac Adongo, Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central and a Board Member of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), who indicated that the central bank was preparing to tighten controls on dollar withdrawals to help stabilise the Ghanaian Cedi.

However, the President of the Bankers Association, John Awuah, stated categorically that no such directive has been issued by the Bank of Ghana.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, May 15, 2025, Mr. Awuah said:

“We have not received any directive from the Bank of Ghana that bars the withdrawal of foreign currency over the counter. As we have been operating in the past, as it is today, it will be the same tomorrow until such directive is formally communicated to us, the mode of operations for foreign accounts in Ghana.”

Mr. Awuah reaffirmed that banks remain guided by the existing legal and regulatory framework, and that no official changes have been made to affect the public’s ability to access foreign currency.

“We operate under Act 721 of 2006, which may undergo some review, but that is the guiding act, as has been updated with notices and directives from the Bank of Ghana.
None of those directives stipulates the barrment or discontinuation of over-the-counter foreign exchange withdrawal, there is a process.”

He acknowledged that due diligence procedures are in place, but stressed that account holders with legitimate needs can still access foreign currency as usual.

“Obviously, you cannot just walk to a bank and say ‘I want to withdraw Dollars’. You would be asked questions.
If you have a legitimate need for which reason you need a foreign currency account, you will get it, it is yours.
If you want to purchase foreign currency from the bank to undertake a legitimate transaction in foreign currency you will be able to do so,” he added.

Christians fume at pastor’s daughter in viral video

A wave of disappointment and outrage has swept across the Christian community on social media following the circulation of an explicit video involving the daughter of a well-known Ivorian pastor.

Over-the-Counter Dollar withdrawals still permitted

0

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has clarified that there is no ban on over-the-counter (OTC) cash withdrawals in foreign currency from bank accounts, amid public speculation and political commentary about a possible clampdown on dollar access in the country.

In an official notice issued on Thursday, May 15, the Central Bank reaffirmed that withdrawals in foreign currency remain permissible under Ghana’s existing foreign exchange regulations.

“Over-the-counter (OTC) cash withdrawals in foreign currency from Foreign Exchange Accounts (FEA) and Foreign Currency Accounts (FCA) are allowed,” the Bank of Ghana stated.

The clarification comes in response to recent public debates sparked by remarks from Isaac Adongo, Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central and a Board Member of the Bank of Ghana.

Mr. Adongo had suggested that the central bank was planning to intensify restrictions on OTC dollar withdrawals to help stabilise the Ghana cedi. However, the BoG’s official position contradicts those claims.

According to the BoG, account holders with non-FEA and non-FCA accounts may also purchase foreign exchange for travel purposes—up to a maximum of US$10,000 per person per trip—provided the transaction is supported by a valid passport, visa, and confirmed travel ticket, in line with BoG Notice No. BG/GOV/SEC/2014/09.

“Cheques and cheque books may continue to be issued on FEA and FCA accounts,” the central bank added, reinforcing the continuity of banking services for foreign currency accounts.

Most notably, the Bank emphasized that there has been no review or change to these existing measures.

“The Bank has not contemplated reviewing these existing measures. All banks and the public are advised to take note and comply accordingly.”

The central bank’s latest clarification follows growing public concern over access to foreign exchange, especially in light of the recent volatility of the cedi.

While the currency has seen some appreciation in recent weeks, the demand for U.S. dollars remains strong for importers, travellers, and international businesses.

Some of the participants

The National Folklore Board and the Centre for National Culture has invited institutions, artistes and professionals to collaborate and contribute to the project dubbed “Unfolding Cultural Heritage” in Greater Accra.

The initiative aims to build capacities in the cultural and creative sectors, by supporting the exposure and reinterpretation of oral and intangible heritage through the promotion of social impact initiatives for the youth and families as well as encouraging the use of digital technologies in storytelling and sharing of knowledge.

The project seeks to promote collaboration between cultural professionals, artistes, institutions, and local communities.

The project will connect the Greater Accra Region with the Salento Region in Italy through art residencies, cultural exchanges, training programmes, and collaborative workshops to display and review bodiless heritage through arts.

It will also highlight the role of modern arts as tools for intercultural exchange, community engagement, and sustainable development, in alignment with the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

There will be an online training and co-design programme with four thematic workshops open to freelancers, public and private organisations from Europe and Africa, as well as the virtual training which will focus on the following topics: Museums and Libraries in the 2030 Agenda, Arts and New Languages for the Emergence and Enhancement of Intangible Heritage, Community Engagement, New Technologies and New Narratives.

Artistic residencies and field research will involve two Italian and two Ghanaian artists, working across disciplines to explore and reinterpret traditional practices.

Their work will result in a children’s illustrated book, a digital archive of audio-visual materials, and a collective mural inspired by Ghanaian “talking drums” and oral storytelling.

The residency in Ghana will bring the artistic collective to the village of Tutu in the Eastern Region for a six-day cultural immersion. Activities will include workshops in schools and community spaces, creative labs focusing on folklore and performance and co-creation sessions to design future collaborations.

FAGE Calls For Targeted Policy To Support Exports

0

Davis Korboe

The President of the Federation of Associations of Ghanaian Exporters (FAGE), Davis Korboe, has called for a clear and robust policy framework to support Ghana’s export sector and agribusiness industry.

He pointed out that despite efforts by financial institutions such as EXIM Bank and the Ghana Incentive-Based Risk-Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (GIRSAL), the current support system is insufficient to absorb the economic shocks confronting exporters.

Speaking to the media ahead of the Ghana Horticulture Expo 2025, Mr. Korboe emphasised the need for a special purpose vehicle to cushion exporters, particularly within the agribusiness value chain. Without such targeted support, he warned, exporters will continue to struggle amid ongoing economic pressures.

The Horticulture Expo, scheduled to take place from June 11 to 13, 2025, under the theme “Innovate, Transform, Sustain: Driving Growth in Ghana’s Horticultural Sector,” aims to highlight the potential of horticulture to drive economic growth and attract investment.

“Our exporters are crying out; this is the time for our banks to step up. There should be a special purpose vehicle for exports and agribusiness in general. Once that happens, these shocks will be absorbed,” Mr. Korboe stated.

He also addressed the challenges surrounding the performance of the Ghanaian cedi against major foreign currencies, cautioning against a rushed approach to managing its value.

“There’s too much stress on the cedi, and that hurts our exports. There should be some allowance for depreciation, but it shouldn’t be done overnight. Stability is good, but we need to understand the difference between stability and appreciation,” he noted.

Mr. Korboe further highlighted the role of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) in consistently supporting horticultural stakeholders in accessing regional and global markets through participation in key international trade exhibitions.

GEPA, which partnered with FAGE to host the maiden Horti Expo in 2024, is once again collaborating with the federation for the second edition, recognising the sector’s vast potential.

The upcoming event will bring together producers, exporters, investors, researchers, and policymakers to explore strategies for innovation, sustainability, and market access in the horticulture sector. It will also highlight critical issues such as climate resilience, regional trade integration, and inclusive participation, particularly for women and youth.

Ralph Poku-Adusei is a first-time MP, represent the Bekwai Constituency Ralph Poku-Adusei is a first-time MP, represent the Bekwai Constituency

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bekwai Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Ralph Poku-Adusei, has opened up about life in the 9th Parliament of Ghana.

Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, the first-time MP said that things have been difficult for him so far.

He indicated that being in Parliament on the ticket of an opposition political party has been his bane.

“It’s actually difficult surviving in Parliament as an opposition MP. Perhaps, until you get in there, you won’t be declared as a Minority or Majority. It’s only when you get in that you know your fate, based on the results that had come out during the election.

“So, I would say being in Parliament and being in opposition is one of the things you wouldn’t even want to wish on your enemy. It’s a difficult task. It has been a very, very difficult journey,” he confessed.

The Bekwai legislator, however, indicated that he will do all he can to serve his constituents.

He added, “But then I must say that we are trying our best to hang in there, waiting for a good time (sic).”
